Abstract
Photoperiod sensitivity is an important consideration in maize cultivation. Flowering time is affected by photoperiod and sensitivity to it limits the potential for successful exchange of germplasm across different latitudes. For resolving the genetic basis of photoperiod sensitivity in maize, a set of 207 recombinant inbred lines derived from a temperate and tropical inbred line cross was evaluated for 2 years in a long-day and short-day environment. Genetic linkage maps were constructed using 237 SSR markers with a total length 1,974.3 cM, and an average space between two makers of 8.33 cM. Twenty-nine QTL were detected for the five measured photoperiod sensitivity traits using composite interval mapping and multiple interval mapping. QTL for flowering time, plant height and leaf number, under long-day conditions, were found clustered on chromosome 10, while QTL for short-day conditions resided on chromosome 3. The QTL in the bin 10.04 region of chromosome 10 were detected associated with photoperiod sensitivity and related traits during long days. These results indicated that this region might contain an important photoperiod sensitivity element.

Abstract
We report on the design and experimental characterization of aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APLN) crystals for use in monolithically integrated dual nonlinear-optical devices. A cascade and a single aperiodic-domain-structure designs based on simulated annealing method were constructed in LiNbO(3) to simultaneously perform as 4-channel electro-optically active (EOA) filters and 4-channel frequency doublers in the telecom band. We found that we could obtain a 2.44-fold enhancement in second-harmonic-generation conversion efficiency and a 2.4-time reduction in filter transmission bandwidth with the single APLN device over the cascade one when the same device length of 2 cm and the EOA field of 1027 V/mm were used.

Abstract
Under normal incidence of circularly polarized light at room temperature, a charge current with swirly distribution has been observed in the two-dimensional electron gas in Al{0.25}Ga{0.75}N/GaN heterostructures. We believe that this anomalous charge current is produced by a radial spin current via the reciprocal spin Hall effect. It suggests a new way to research the reciprocal spin Hall effect and spin current on the macroscopic scale and at room temperature.

Abstract
Lupus nephritis constitutes the major cause of morbidity and mortality in SLE. The long-term outcome of renal transplantation in lupus patients remains controversial, and the recurrence of lupus activity is a major concern. This study aims to determine the long-term outcome of renal transplantation in Chinese lupus patients and the evolution of lupus activity. A total of 23 lupus patients undergoing renal transplantation were enrolled and compared with 94 matched controls. The overall patient and graft survival rates at 10 years post-transplant in lupus group were not different from the control group (95.2% and 57.7% vs. 90.7% and 66.3%). Recurrence of lupus nephritis in renal allograft and flare-ups of lupus activity were not observed in this study. The SLE group had less acute rejection than the control group (20.4% vs. 29.8%, P<0.05). The infection rate between the two groups was similar (39.1% vs. 51.1%, P=0.427), although SLE group had a significantly higher rate of developing avascular necrosis (17.4% vs. 2.1%, P=0.04). In conclusion, patient and graft survival rates and other major complications in Chinese lupus patients are comparable to non-lupus transplant recipients caused by other diseases. Chinese patients with SLE are suitable candidates for renal transplantation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Maternal mortality in Singapore, as in other developed countries, has remained low in the past decade. In the United Kingdom and Australia, maternal deaths from suicide and psychiatric causes have been the leading cause of maternal mortality, and there have therefore been comprehensive healthcare programmes to address the mental health needs of mothers. METHODS In this study, we looked at maternal deaths from 2000 to 2004, by linking coronial cases of female suicide in the reproductive age group 15-45 years, with the birth registration database, to identify both early and late maternal deaths. RESULTS There was only one identified maternal death among 589 female suicides aged 15-45 years, occurring in a teenager within the first month postpartum. There was likely also another case that was unconfirmed and unreported. CONCLUSION From this preliminary study, suicide and psychiatric causes are not significant causes of maternal mortality in Singapore. However, given that the epidemiology of postnatal depression statistics mirror that of the other countries, it is possible that maternal suicides have been underreported, and the load may well be higher. There is a need for a similar confidential enquiry into maternal deaths to be set up here, as is already in place in various countries, notably the United Kingdom and Australia, for the past decade.

Abstract
The sequence TAVSPTTLR is a conserved and linear neutralizing epitope on the glycoprotein E2 of classical swine fever virus. In this study, TAVSPTTLR-directed antibodies, induced either by virions or by an epitope-focused immunogen, were characterized. The results revealed that despite the same epitope specificity, the antibodies induced by different immunogens varied significantly both in the neutralizing test and in binding inhibition assays. This suggests that the protective immunity induced by this epitope is due to more than simply the epitope specificity and that this epitope might need essential contributions from its flanking context to induce functional epitope-specific antibodies.

Abstract
The investigation on the direct epitaxial quantum wires (QWR) using MBE or MOCVD has been persuited for more than two decades, more lengthy in history as compared with its quantum dot counterpart. Up to now, QWRs with various structural configurations have been produced with different growth methods. This is a reviewing article consisting mainly of two parts. The first part discusses QWRs of various configurations, together with laser devices based on them, in terms of the two growth mechanisms, self-ordering and self-assembling. The second part gives a brief review of the electrical and optical properties of QWRs.

Abstract
Ziz m 1 is a major Indian jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana) allergen involved in latex-fruit syndrome, and cDNA of the allergen has been cloned, sequenced and expressed in yeast by our laboratory previously. In this study, we performed an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-binding epitope analysis of Ziz m 1 using overlapping recombinant fragments. Eight overlapping recombinant fragments were generated from the recombinant Ziz m 1 allergen. The fragments were expressed in Escherichia coli and IgE-binding activities were evaluated by sera of latex-Indian jujube-allergic subjects and normal subjects using immunoblotting. Human allergic sera are not able to recognize fragments consisting of amino acid sequences 26-71, 119-280 and 119-291. However, residues at positions 26-199, 26-105, 26-86, 119-320 and 238-330 were found relevant in the IgE-binding. Our results indicate that (72)NISGHCSDCTFLGEE(86) and (292)VWNRYYDLKTNYSSSIILEYVNSGTKYLP(320) of Ziz m 1 are the sequences required for human IgE binding. Four corresponding peptides, (72)NISGHCSDCTE(86), (292)VWNRYYDLKT(301), (300)KTNYSSSIILEY(311) and (309)LEYVNSGTKYLP(320), were synthesized, and these peptides reacted with 70%, 100%, 70% and 70% of 10 allergic sera tested, as revealed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Sensitization to (292)VWNRYYDLKT(301) correlated significantly with the presence of allergic symptoms (P < 0.001). These findings will be useful in designing diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, thereby contributing to the development of specific immunotherapy for subjects with latex-fruit syndrome.

Abstract
Siderosis bulbi is vision threatening. An investigation into its mechanisms and management is crucial. Experimental siderosis was established by intravitreous administration of an iron particle (chronic) or FeSO4 (acute). After siderosis, there was a significant dose-responsive reduction in eletroretinogram (a/b-wave) amplitude, and an increase in •OH level, greater when caused by 24 mM FeSO4 than that by 8 mM FeSO4. Furthermore, the FeSO4-induced oxidative stress was significantly blunted by 100 μM ferulic acid (FA). Siderosis also resulted in an excessive glutamate release, increased [Ca++]i, and enhanced superoxide dismutase immunoreactivity. The latter finding was consistent with the Western blot result. Obvious disorganization including loss of photoreceptor outer segments and cholinergic amacrines together with a wide-spreading ferric distribution across the retina was present, which were related to the eletro-retinographic and pathologic dysfunctions. Furthermore, b-wave reduction and amacrine damage were respectively, significantly, dose-dependently, and clearly ameliorated by FA. Thus, siderosis stimulates oxidative stress, and possibly, subsequent excitotoxicity, and calcium influx, which explains why the retina is impaired electro-physiologically and pathologically. Importantly, FA protects iron toxicity perhaps by acting as a free radical scavenger. This provides an approach to the study and treatment of the iron-related disorders such as retained intraocular iron and Alzheimer disease.

Abstract
Modern wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most ozone (O(3))-sensitive crops. However, little is known about its genetic background of O(3) sensitivity, which is fundamental for breeding O(3)-resistant cultivars. Wild and cultivated species of winter wheat including donors of the A, B and D genomes of T. aestivum were exposed to 100 ppb O(3) or charcoal-filtered air in open top chambers for 21 d. Responses to O(3) were assessed by visible O(3) injury, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, relative growth rate, and biomass accumulation. Ozone significantly decreased light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (-37%) and instantaneous transpiration efficiency (-42%), but increased stomatal conductance (+11%) and intercellular CO(2) concentration (+11%). Elevated O(3) depressed ground fluorescence (-8%), maximum fluorescence (-26%), variable fluorescence (-31%), and maximum photochemical efficiency (-7%). Ozone also decreased relative growth rate and the allometric coefficient, which finally reduced total biomass accumulation (-54%), but to a greater extent in roots (-77%) than in the shoot (-44%). Winter wheat exhibited significant interspecies variation in the impacts of elevated O(3) on photosynthesis and growth. Primitive cultivated wheat demonstrated the highest relative O(3) tolerance followed by modern wheat and wild wheat showed the lowest. Among the genome donors of modern wheat, Aegilops tauschii (DD) behaved as the most O(3)-sensitive followed by T. monococcum (AA) and Triticum turgidum ssp. durum (AABB) appeared to be the most O(3)-tolerant. It was concluded that the higher O(3) sensitivity of modern wheat was attributed to the increased O(3) sensitivity of Aegilops tauschii (DD), but not to Triticum turgidum ssp. durum (AABB) during speciation.

Abstract
We demonstrated a laser-diode-pumped, electro-optically internal-Q-switched laser system radiating at 1.085 mum fabricated using a periodically poled Nd:MgO:LiNbO3 (Nd:MgO:PPLN) crystal. The Nd:MgO:PPLN is 17-mm long and has a 12-mm long, 13.6-mum period polarization-mode quasi-phase-matching (PM QPM) grating section functioning as the Q-switch of the laser system. When the Nd:MgO:PPLN Q-switch was driven by a 260-V voltage pulse train at 5 kHz, we obtained laser pulses of pulse energy >2.45 muJ and a pulse width of ~28 ns, corresponding to a laser peak power of ~88 W, from this internal-Q-switched laser system with 2% output coupling at an absorbed diode pump power of 0.61 W.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although homocysteine (HCY) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, recent clinical trials failed to show the benefits by reducing plasma HCY. Alternative strategy with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, statins, might be feasible. This study investigated HCY-induced endothelial adhesiveness with mononuclear cells (MNCs) from patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The direct endothelial protective effects of statins were also examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS Circulating MNCs were isolated from 14 stable CAD patients and 7 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. Superoxide production of MNCs was determined by Ultra-weak and luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence. Human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) were used for endothelial adhesiveness to MNCs or U937 human monocytic cells. Endothelial expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) were examined by Western blot. RESULTS Superoxide production of MNCs and plasma HCY and high-sensitive CRP levels were significantly increased in CAD patients than in healthy subjects. Stimulation with HCY enhanced the endothelial adhesiveness to MNCs from CAD patients or to U937 cells in a dose-dependent manner, whereas it was obscure with MNCs from healthy subjects. HCY stimulated endothelial VCAM-1 but not ICAM-1 expression in a dose-dependent manner. Monoclonal antibodies to VCAM-1 attenuated HCY-induced endothelial adhesiveness. Simvastatin or pravastatin significantly reduced HCY-induced VCAM-1 expression and endothelial adhesiveness to MNCs from CAD patients. CONCLUSION Circulating MNCs were activated in CAD patients, which was critical to HCY-induced endothelial adhesiveness. Statins could directly reduce HCY-induced endothelial-MNC adhesion via VCAM-1 inhibition, suggesting its potential implication in HCY-related atherosclerosis disease.

Abstract
Effect of heat treatment of Ag-Cu-Pd dispersant particles on the structure, mechanical properties and mercury vapor release rate of an Ag-Cu-Sn/Ag-Cu-Pd-based dental amalgam has been investigated. Experimental results indicate that crystallinity of dispersant Ag-Cu-Pd alloy increases with increasing HTT, with most notable increase occurring between 100 and 200 degrees C. Increasing HTT of Ag-Cu-Pd alloy does not change much of the mercury/alloy ratio for amalgamation, but largely reduces working/setting time of the amalgam. The Ag-Cu-Pd particles in 7 d-aged amalgam are comprised primarily of an outer Sn/Cu/Pd-rich zone and an inner Ag/Cu/Pd-rich zone with eutectic-type morphology and chemical distribution. The annealing-enhanced Pd segregation effect is most significantly observed in the amalgam derived from 300 degrees C-annealed Ag-Cu-Pd dispersant. This amalgam also has the highest compressive strength, highest DTS, and lowest creep rate. Higher annealing temperature causes mechanical property of the amalgam to deteriorate. The initial mercury vapor release rates of amalgams derived from 100, 200 and 300 degrees C-annealed Ag-Cu-Pd dispersant are significantly lower than that derived from 400 degrees C-annealed dispersant.

Abstract
The deleterious effects of ethanol in senescence-accelerated prone 8 mice (SAMP8) and the protective role of nicotinamide (NAM) against ethanol-induced liver injury were examined. The mice were orally administered 2 g ethanol/kg BW and 200 mg or 500 mg NAM/kg BW three times/week for 10 weeks. Results showed that ethanol elevated activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) significantly. Ethanol also enhanced the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyls in the liver, whereas ethanol treatment resulted in significantly lower activity of hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Hematoxylin and eosin staining indicated moderate to severe fatty infiltration but not fibrosis. Administration of high NAM (500 mg/kg BW) led to markedly decreased levels of hepatic MDA, protein carbonyls, fatty infiltration and the activity of ALT, and increased activity of GPx, catalase and SOD in the ethanol-fed group. Thus, using SAMP8 as animal model for ethanol-induced liver injury in the aged mice, this study demonstrates that NAM is effective in protecting such damage.

Abstract
We report a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal for both temperature-insensitive laser Q-switching and temperature-tuned wavelength conversion. The PPLN crystal consists of two sections, a 20.3-mum period section functioning as an electro-optic Bragg grating for Qswitching a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser at 1064 nm and a 31-mum-period section functioning as an optical parametric generator for down converting the generated 1064-nm laser. When driving the PPLN Bragg grating with 170-V voltage pulses, we measured 181 muJ pulse energy at 1064 nm from the Nd:YVO4 laser pumped by 20.4 W diode power. The 181-muJ pulsed laser was further converted into mid-infrared radiation in the monolithic PPLN crystal with 35% parametric efficiency. The wavelengths were broadly tunable in the range of 1.75-1.88 mum (signal) and 2.7-2.44 mum (idler) via temperature without affecting the performance of the PPLN Bragg Qswitch.

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*5516 allele differs from the B*5502 by a single 97 T --> C substitution (His to Tyr at position 33) in exon 2. The B*1313 allele results from 419 T --> A and 420 A --> C substitutions, encoding a Leu to Tyr substitution at 140 in exon 2 of the B*1301 allele. The B*9512 allele differs from B*1502 by a single 360 G --> C substitution (Gln to His at 120) in exon 3. The DRB1*1457 allele appears to be a hybrid molecule generated by recombination between the DRB1*13 and DRB1*14 alleles. The serological equivalents of these new alleles are HLA-B22, -B13, -B15, and DR13, respectively. Family studies detected two rare haplotypes: A*11, B*9512, DRB1*14 and A*24, B*52, Cw*07, DRB1*1457, DRB3*020201, DQB1*050301. The gene frequencies of these alleles in the Chinese population are less than 0.0001.

Abstract
We report the observation of light-enhanced electro-optic spectral tuning in annealed proton-exchanged, asymmetric domain-duty-cycle periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) channel waveguides for second-harmonic generation. The spectral tuning rate was increased rapidly from 0.07 nm/(kV/mm) to a saturated value of 0.32 nm/(kV/mm) in a 30%/70% domain-duty-cycle PPLN waveguide when the fundamental pump power near 1534 nm was increased from 0.6 to 46 mW. The second-harmonic laser power at 767 nm was identified to be the source enhancing the spectral tuning.

Abstract
Osteoporosis, which usually peaks during 6 to 12 months after transplantation, remains an important concern after heart transplantation. Immunosuppressants contribute to this phenomenon. Glucocorticoids are well documented to cause bone loss, but the role of cyclosporine (CsA) remains controversial, especially among long-term recipients on low doses of steroid. We herein report a cross-sectional study of bone mineral density (BMD) among long-term Chinese heart transplant recipients. We enrolled 41 patients of mean age 50.15 +/- 13.58 years with a mean follow-up of 57.02 months. Lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Trough CsA levels (C(0)) and markers of mineral metabolism, including bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and urinary N-telopeptide, were determined by immunoassay. Sixty six percent of subjects showed bone loss at the femoral neck, significantly more than those in the lumbar spine. Those receiving a higher CsA dosage (<2.5 mg/kg/d) showed greater femoral neck BMD, but lower serum creatinine values. Our results demonstrated that bone loss remains long after transplantation, though bone markers are within normal limits.

Abstract
For InAs/GaAs quantum dot system, the evolution of the wetting layer (WL) with the InAs deposition thickness has been studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS). Two transitions related to the heavy- and light-hole in the WL have been distinguished in RD spectra. Taking into account the strain and segregation effects, a model has been presented to deduce the InAs amount in the WL and the segregation coefficient of the indium atoms from the transition energies of heavy- and light-holes. The variation of the InAs amount in the WL and the segregation coefficient are found to rely closely on the growth modes. In addition, the huge dots also exhibits a strong effect on the evolution of the WL. The observed linear dependence of In segregation coefficient upon the InAs amount in the WL demonstrates that the segregation is enhanced by the strain in the WL.

Abstract
We report a single-longitudinal-mode CW diode-pumped Nd:YVO(4) laser emitting at both 1064 and 1342 nm with 10% optical efficiency at 20-W pump power. The measured spectral widths at 1064 and 1342 nm were less than 450 MHz and 400 MHz, respectively. The two emission wavelengths can be independently tuned over the lasing bandwidths of the dual-wavelength laser.

Abstract
Effects of endurance training on the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), a rate-limiting enzyme of gluconeogenesis, were studied in the obese Zucker rats. We used a moderate exercise program consisting of treadmill running at 20 m/min and 0-degree gradient for 1 h/day, 7 days/week, for 8 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, insulin action on glucose disposal rate was measured using the glucose-insulin index, the product of the areas under the curve of glucose and insulin during the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test. Furthermore, changes of hepatic PEPCK gene expression were detected using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction to assay the mRNA level and Western blot analysis to detect the protein level. Different to sedentary obese rats, an elevation in the value of glucose-insulin index from the exercised obese rats declined, indicating the marked effect of regular moderate exercise on the improvement of insulin sensitivity in this insulin resistant animal model. Moreover, the diabetes-related elevation in mRNA level and protein content of hepatic PEPCK were observed in non-exercise obese groups but they were markedly reduced by exercise training. In addition, chronic exercise training enhanced the insulin sensitivity of lean Zucker rats, since the value of glucose-insulin index was lower than that of untrained lean groups. Also, the hepatic PEPCK gene expressions both the mRNA and protein levels were reduced in exercised lean Zucker rats as compared with their sedentary littermates. These results suggest that modulation of hepatic PEPCK gene expression by chronic exercise training might be related to the enhancement of insulin sensitivity. Thus, endurance exercise training could aid in the prevention and/or treatment of individuals with insulin resistance.

Abstract
Aerobic exercise, including treadmill running has been widely used to treat insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. We studied the effects of endurance training on gene expression of adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) in skeletal muscle of obese Zucker rats: the 8-week moderate exercise program consisted of treadmill running at 20 m/min and 0 degrees gradient for 1 h/day, 7 days/week. After 8 weeks, insulin action on glucose disposal rate was measured by glucose-insulin index, the product of the areas under the curve of glucose and insulin during intraperitoneal glucose tolerance testing. In contrast to results for sedentary obese rats, exercise training decreased plasma levels of insulin and glucose as well as the glucose-insulin index in obese rats, indicating the merit of regular moderate exercise for improvement of insulin sensitivity in this insulin-resistant animal model. Also, diabetes-related reductions in mRNA and protein content of AdipoR1 in soleus muscle were observed in obese rats at baseline; they were markedly reversed after the 8-week exercise program. However, such exercise training did not alter plasma levels of insulin and glucose in lean Zucker rats. Also, AdipoR1 gene expression in soleus muscle was not changed by exercise in lean Zucker rats compared with the sedentary, lean littermates. These results suggest that long-term exercise training may reverse reduced AdipoR1 gene expression in soleus muscle and improve insulin sensitivity in the obese Zucker rats. Thus, an endurance exercise training is probably helpful clinically for obese individuals with insulin resistance.
