Abstract
We demonstrate experimentally that optical phase conjugation can be used to focus light through strongly scattering media even when far less than a photon per optical degree of freedom is detected. We found that the best achievable intensity contrast is equal to the total number of detected photons, as long as the resolution of the system is high enough. Our results demonstrate that phase conjugation can be used even when the photon budget is extremely low, such as in high-speed focusing through dynamic media or imaging deep inside tissue.

Abstract
Data collected from 690 purebred Duroc pigs from 2009 to 2012 were used to estimate the heritability, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between production and meat quality traits. Variance components were obtained through the restricted maximum likelihood procedure using Wombat and SAS version 9.0. Animals were raised under the same management in five different breeding farms. The average daily gain, loin muscle area (LMA), backfat thickness (BF), and lean percent (LP) were measured as production traits. Meat quality traits included pH, cooking loss, lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), marbling score (MS), moisture content (MC), water holding capacity (WHC), and shear force. The results showed that the heritability estimates for meat quality traits varied largely from 0.19 to 0.79. Production traits were moderate to highly heritable from 0.41 to 0.73. Genotypically, the BF was positively correlated (p<0.05) with MC (0.786), WHC (0.904), and pH (0.328) but negatively correlated with shear force (−0.533). The results of genetic correlations indicated that selection for less BF could decrease pH, moisture content, and WHC and increase the shear force of meat. Additionally, a significant positive correlation was recorded between average daily gain and WHC, which indicates pork from faster-growing animals has higher WHC. Furthermore, selection for larger LMA and LP could increase MS and lightness color of meat. The meat quality and production traits could be improved simultaneously if desired. Hence, to avoid further deterioration of pork characteristics, appropriate selection of traits should be considered.

Abstract
Nodular fasciitis is a benign fibroblastic proliferation in soft tissue that is most commonly found in the upper extremities, trunk, head, and neck region. Its occurrence in the breast has been rarely reported. The most characteristic features are the sudden appearance and rapid growth of a palpable lesion. Nodular fasciitis can clinically, radiologically, and histopathologically mimic a breast carcinoma. We present a case of nodular fasciitis of the breast and a review of the relevant literature.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the clinical value of second-look ultrasound (US) examination for the evaluation of additional enhancing lesions detected on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between May 2008 and February 2011, 794 consecutive patients with histologically confirmed breast cancer underwent breast MR imaging. We included 101 patients with 132 additional enhancing breast lesions detected on MR imaging who underwent second-look US. The imaging features and lesion category according to the Breast Imaging and Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) were assessed with MR and US imaging, respectively. RESULTS According to the BI-RADS system, 67 lesions (50.8 %) were classified as category 0, 33 lesions (25.0 %) as category 3, and 32 lesions (24.2 %) as category 4. Of the 67 indeterminate lesions on MR imaging, 34 (50.7 %) were demonstrated on second-look US. 11 of these 34 lesions showed suspicious sonographic features, including 1 lesion that showed malignancy (9.1 %, 1/11). Most of the suspicious lesions on MR imaging (26 of 32 BI-RADS category 4 lesions, 81.3 %) were demonstrated on second-look US, and 17 were malignant (65.4 %, 17/26). Of the 6 BI-RADS category 4 lesions without sonographic correlation, 1 was malignant (16.7 %, 1/6). CONCLUSION Second-look US examination was useful for evaluating MR-detected lesions in patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
Fentanyl is used in small animals for perioperative analgesia during anaesthesia. Severe bradycardia and asystole were observed on bolus administration of a 3 µg/kg loading dose of fentanyl in two dogs under isoflurane anaesthesia. Premedication with 10 µg/kg glycopyrrolate did not prevent asystole in the first case; and although bradycardia was treated with 5 µg/kg glycopyrrolate administered intravenously in the second case, the heart rate continuously decreased and asystole subsequently developed. Asystole in both cases was quickly corrected by intravenous administration of 0 · 04 mg/kg atropine and closed chest compressions. This case report describes asystole induced by fentanyl administration in isoflurane anaesthetised dogs. Atropine was more effective than glycopyrrolate in the treatment of fentanyl-induced asystole.

Abstract
133 Background: We performed multicenter retrospective study to evaluate the activity and the safety of a docetaxel as the third-line chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) patients who had undergone oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) and irinotecan (FOLFIRI)-based chemotherapy regimens. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with AGC previously treated were eligible for this study. Patients received docetaxel 30 mg/m2 +/- cisplatin 30 mg/m2 IV on day 1, 8 or docetaxel 60 mg/m2 +/- cisplatin 60 mg/m2 IV on day 1 every 3 weeks until disease progression, and responses were assessed after every two cycles according to RECIST criteria and toxicity was evaluated by NCI-CTC. Results: Thirty-two out of 38 patients were evaluable for response. A total of 95.1 cycles of chemotherapy (median 2, range 0.5–7) were administered. Relative dose intensities of docetaxel and cisplatin were 93.4% and 87.8%, respectively. The overall response rate was 15.6% and the disease control rate was 50%. With a median follow-up duration of 3.1 months (range 0.3-14.3 months), 36 patients had disease progression, and 34 patients had died at the time of analysis. The median progression-free survival was 1.8 months (95% CI, 1.3–2.3 months). The median overall survival was 3.1 months (95% CI, 2.3–3.9 months). Grade 3 or 4 hematologic toxicities included neutropenia in thirteen patients (38.3%), febrile neutropenia in four patients (11.7%). and thrombocytopenia in one patient (2.9%). Other grade 3 or 4 toxicities included neuropathy in three patients (8.8%) and mucositis in two patients (5.9%). There were three treatment-related deaths (8.8%) caused by infection associated with neutropenia. Conclusions: Salvage docetaxel chemotherapy in AGC patients failed in oxaliplatin and irinotecan-based treatment is not recommend routinely. However, selected patients with good performance status and sufficient albumin levels may have derived some survival benefits from salvage chemotherapy. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Background: Sentinel lymph node(SLN) biopsy in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS) was controversial. We may skip SLN biopsy when we performed conserving operation with small sized DCIS. But sometimes we can find DCIS with micro-invasive breast cancer (MIC) after operation. Should another operation be performed? We determined the incidence of positive axillary lymph node (ALNs) in patients with MIC, and the predictive factors of ALNs metastasis in these patients. Methods: Between July 1989 and January 2008, 9046 patients had operations performed on invasive breast cancers at Asan Medical Center. From July1989 to February 2003, ALND was performed to surgically stage the axilla. Since May 2003, SNB has been routinely performed for all cases. Patients who were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and those who had no identifiable ALNs at surgery were excluded from the study. We retrospectively checked clinical and pathologic variables including diagnosis, patient demographics, size of DCIS, grade, multi-focal lesion, hormone receptor status, lymphatic invasion status etc. Results: 265 patients were identified with microinvasive (pathologic stage T1mic) breast cancer. Among these patients, 12 patients didn't have ALN study. 2 patients had bilateral MIC. The research was conducted on the remaining 255 cases. There were 13 cases of ALN metastases identified in this group of patients(5%). Young age (p=0.006), multifocal lesion (p=0.040) and lymphatic invasion (p<0.0001) were predictive factors for ALN metastases. There was no incidence of metastatic ALNs among the old age (≥50) patients of this group. Conclusion: As the incidence of ALN metastases in MIC patients is very small, particularly in those who had no lymphatic invasion, single lesion and among old age patients. So we think conservative treatment is one of the available options for these patients. However, due to the size of the subject group in this study, it needs to be validated through extensive prospective research.

Abstract
ATP acts as a neurotransmitter or co-neurotransmitter in many areas of the CNS and peripheral nervous systems; however, little is known about the expression and functional role of purinoceptors (P2) in midbrain dopaminergic neurons. Therefore, we investigated P2X receptor expression and regulation of spontaneous firing activity in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) in rats using patch-clamp and Ca(2+)-imaging techniques. In most neurons, application of ATP (1 microM-1 mM) increased firing rate dose-dependently (EC(50)=1.26+/-0.26 microM, n=45). When the P2-receptor agonists such as 2-methylthio-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (2-MeSATP) or ATPgammaS were applied or pressure-applied to the neuron, the firing activity increased together with a rise in cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]c), but application of beta,gamma-methylene ATP (P2X(1, 3) agonist) or methylthio-adenosine 5'-diphosphate (P2Y(1) agonist) had no effect. In many neurons, the effect of ATP was abolished by the application of the P2-receptor antagonists, suramin or pyridoxal-phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulfonic acid (PPADS). When ATP was applied in a Ca(2+)-free solution, there was no detectable change in [Ca(2+)]c, suggesting that ATP does not release Ca(2+) from intracellular stores. In the single-cell reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), we found that 65% of dopaminergic neurons expressed mRNAs for P2X receptors; positive amplifications of P2X(6) (57.1%), P2X(2/6) (25.0%), and P2X(4) mRNA (17.9%), respectively. From the above results, we could conclude that ATP modulates firing activities in the rat SNc dopaminergic neurons, possibly via P2X(2), P2X(2/6), and/or P2X(4) receptors.

Abstract
In a breach-of-containment nuclear reactor accident, the near-field exposure is primarily through inhalation of radioiodine. Thyroid blockade by oral potassium iodide (KI) is a practical and effective protective measure for the general public in such an emergency. The retention functions incorporating the thyroid blocking effects by KI have been derived using a standard three-compartment model of iodine metabolism. This allows more accurate estimation of the thyroid dose by calculating the blocking factor.

Abstract
The initial near-field exposure is primarily through inhalation in a nuclear emergency and the dominant contribution to the effective inhalation dose comes from radioiodine. Thyroid blockade by oral potassium iodide (KI) is efficient and practical for public in the nuclear emergency. Age-dependent radioprotective effect of KI on the thyroid irradiation by (131)I and (133)I has been derived using the simplified compartment model of iodine metabolism and WinSAAM program. Administration of KI within 2 h after (131)I and (133)I intake can block thyroid uptake significantly, yielding protective effect of 78.9% and 74.3%, respectively, for (131)I and (133)I for adults. The mean absorbed doses decrease with age, while protective effects of KI are similar for all age groups.

Abstract
11088 Background: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) and immediate reconstruction has recently been accepted as a new surgical procedure that provides good cosmetic results, although it is necessary to establish oncological safety. We reported our experience to evaluate indications, technique, results, and complications of NSM. Methods: Between 1999 and 2005, medical records of 113 patients with breast cancer undertaken NSM at the Asan Medical Center were analyzed retrospectively. Median age of the patients was 40 years and complications were assessed 3 months later postoperatively. Results: For preoperative indications of NSM, mulifocal or multicentric cancers were 60 cases (53.1%), diffuse microcalcifications on MMG were 27 cases (23.9%), failure of breast conserving surgery due to tumor involvement of resection margin were 12 cases (10.6%), central located small cancers were 11 cases (9.7%). Immediate reconstruction methods were 85 cases (75.2%) in TRAM and 28 cases (24.8%) in direct implant. Intraoperative frozen section biopsy for evaluation of tumor involvement at the NAC showed accuracy of 100%. Pathologic tumor size were 24 cases (21.2%) in Tis, 56 cases (49.6%) in T1, 33 cases (29.2%) in T2, respectively. Lymph node status showed 81 cases (71.7%) in N0, 24 cases (21.2%) in N1, 7 cases (6.2%), and one case (0.9%) in N3, respectively. During 20 months of the median follow-up, four patients developed recurrences; one local recurrence (subcutaneous), two (lung, brain) distant failures, and one local and distant failure. The rate of major NA necrotic complication was 14.6%, but all cases were improved with conservative management. 91.7% of patients were satisfied with their cosmetic results. Conclusions: Although the presented study does not establish conclusion with regard to oncological safety due to short follow-up period, the procedure of NSM with intraoperative pathologic assessment of the subareola tissue, and immediate reconstruction is a reasonable option for a selected patients. Good candidates for NSM are patients unsuitable for breast conservation either for multicentric or multofocal cancers, or because of extensive microcalcification, or involvement of resection margin during breast conserving surgery. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
An electron microbeam cell-irradiation (EMCI) system is now ready for routine operation in Korea. The system components include an electron gun operating at 1-100 keV, a beam transport chamber delivering a micron-sized beam, a cell image acquisition and positioning part and an automatic system control section. The present choice of source beam energy is 30 keV so that the radiation impact is conveyed to the targeted cells with a minimum spatial dispersion. The beam is available at 5 microm in diameter now, but can be changed in the range of 1-200 microm. The cellular dose is delivered with a standard deviation of 30% at 0.1 Gy, 10% at 1 Gy and 3% at 10 Gy. The cells are recognised by over 98% in a 1 mm x 1 mm area and the system is capable of irradiating up to 30,000 cells h(-1).

Abstract
An electron microbeam system has been installed at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) for use in radiation biology studies. The electron beam is produced from a commercial electron gun, and the beam size is defined by a 5 microm diameter pinhole. Beam energy can be varied in the range of 1-100 keV, covering a range of linear energy transfer from 0.4 to 12.1 keV microm-1. The micrometer-sized electron beam selectively irradiates cells cultured in a Mylar-bottomed dish. The positioning of target cells one by one onto the beam exit is automated, as is beam shooting. The electron beam entering the target cells has been calibrated using a Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon (PIPS) detector. This paper describes the KIRAMS microbeam cell irradiation system and its beam characteristics.

Abstract
This study is intended to develop the emission factors of particulate matter such as TPM (total particulate matter), PM-10 (particulate matter less than 10 micrometers in aerodynamic diameter), PM-2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in aerodynamic diameters) and several types of inorganic matter from small-size incinerators (less than 250 kg hr(-1) capacity) and boilers (less than 5 ton hr(-1) capacity a s steam generation) for various compositions of wastes and fuels, respectively.The emission factors for particulate matter from boilers were similar to the US EPA data. However, the emission factors from small incinerators were higher than the emission factors developed in other countries because the emission characteristics were different, especially with respect to the combustor's capacity. Emission factors for heavy metals such as cadmium, manganese, chromium, magnesium, lead, zinc, and copper were also investigated. The emission factors in this study were higher than those in other studies. Particle size distribution of PM-10 and the ratio of submicron PM to TPM were observed and a mode (peak) of submicron size particles together with a higher concentration of them was found, which could be explained by the formation of fines from vaporized metals wastes.

Abstract
Particle growth by the heterogeneous reaction of aldehydes was evaluated in 0.5 m3 Teflon film bags under darkness in the presence of background seed aerosols. The aldehydes used were as follows: glyoxal, butanal, hexanal, octanal, and decanal. To study acid catalyst effects on aldehyde heterogeneous reactions, one of the Teflon bags was initially filled with seed aerosols composed of ammonium sulfate-aerosol acidified with sulfuric acid. These results were compared to particle growth reactions that contained only ammonium sulfate as a background seed aerosol. The gas-phase aldehydes were then added to the Teflon bags. In selected experiments, 1-decanol was also added to the Teflon bags with aldehydes to clarify particle growth via a heterogeneous hemiacetal/acetal formation in the presence/absence of an acid catalyst. The particle size distribution and growth were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (TSI-SMPS), and the results were applied to predicting aerosol growth and size distribution changes by condensation and heterogeneous reactions. Aerosols created from the heterogeneous reactions of aldehydes were collected directly on an ungreased zinc selenide (ZnSe) FTIR disk (25 mm in diameter) by impaction. The ZnSe disks were directly analyzed for product functional groups inthe aerosol phase using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with a deuterated triglycine sulfate (DTGS) detector. Aerosol growth by heterogeneous aldehyde reactions proceeds via a hydration, polymerization process, and hemiacetal/acetal formation from the reaction of aldehydes with alcohols. These aldehyde heterogeneous reactions were accelerated in the presence of an acid catalyst, H2SO4, and led to higher aerosol yields than when H2SO4 was not present in the seed aerosol. The FTIR spectra obtained from the growing aerosol, also illustrated aldehyde group transformation in the particle phase as a function of the heterogeneous reaction. It was concluded that aldehydes, which can be produced by atmospheric photochemical reactions, can significantly contribute on secondary aerosol formation through heterogeneous reactions in the presence of an acid catalyst.

Abstract
We have shown that chronic treatment with carteolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, improved left ventricular (LV) function and survival in an avian model of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The aim of the present study was to compare ex vivo heart function with and without beta-agonist and antagonist challenge. We investigated whether intracoronary infusion of a beta-blocker, carteolol or beta-agonist, isoproterenol decreased contractility. In the DCM group, isoproterenol resulted in a significantly greater increase in heart rate (71% vs. 28% compared to control hearts). To investigate the mechanism for the increase in heart rate, we exposed spontaneously beating neonatal cardiomyocytes to serum immunoglobulin (IgG) isolated from DCM animals. Serum IgG resulted in a significant increase in spontaneous beating rate in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes that was blocked by pre-treatment with a beta-blocker. Carteolol challenge did not significantly change heart rate but did significantly increase LV peak pressure in DCM hearts (62%) while coronary artery flow remained unchanged (2.7+/-0.1 vs 2.7+/-0.5 ml/min/g). These results show that 1) beta-receptor stimulation results in a greater tachycardic response in DCM animals, and 2) carteolol challenge improves myocardial contractility in hearts from DCM animals independent of heart rate or changes in coronary artery flow.

Abstract
Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from the photooxidation of toluene in a hydrocarbon-NOx mixture was generated in a 190 m3 outdoor Teflon chamber. The photooxidation reaction of toluene in the gas phase leads to substituted aromatics (TOL-AR), nonaromatic ring retaining (TOL-R), and ring opening products (TOL-RO). In this work, the following ring opening oxycarboxylic acids were newly identified: glyoxylic acid, methylglyoxylic acid, 4-oxo-2-butenoic acid, oxo-C5-alkenoic acids, dioxopentenoic acids, oxo-C7-alkadienoic acids, dioxo-C6-alkenoic acids, hydroxydioxo-C7-alkenoic acids, and hydroxytrioxo-C6-alkanoic acids. The newly characterized TOL-R and TOL-RO products included methylcyclohexenetriones, hydroxymethylcyclohexentriones, 2-hydroxy-3-penten-1,5-dial, hydroxyoxo-C6-alkenals, hydroxy-C5-triones, hydroxydioxo-C7-alkenals, and hydroxy-C6-tetranones. Products in both the gas and aerosol phases were derivatized with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA) for carbonyls and pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) for carboxylic acid and phenol groups and analyzed using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in an electron impact mode (EI) and a gas chromatograph/ion trap mass spectrometry (GC/ITMS) in both chemical impact and EI modes. To confirm different isomers, the PFBHA-derivatives of products were rederivatized by silylation using N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR) was used to obtain additional functional group information for SOA products impacted on a zinc selenide FTIR disk. The major SOA products under the high NOx conditions of the above experiment included methylnitrophenols, methyldinitrophenols, methylbenzoquinones, methylcyclohexenetriones, 4-oxo-2-butenoic acid, oxo-C5-alkenoic acids, hydroxy-C3-diones, hydroxyoxo-C5-alkenals, hydroxyoxo-C6-alkenals, and hydroxydioxo-C7-alkenals. Of the major SOA products, the experimental partitioning coefficients (iKp) of aldehyde products were much higher and deviated more from predicted iKp values. This is an extremely important result, because it shows that aldehyde products can further react through heterogeneous processes, which may be a very significant SOA generation mechanism from the oxidation of aromatics in the atmosphere.

Abstract
Leptin may rapidly inhibit food intake by altering the secretion of hypothalamic neuropeptides such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), a stimulator of food intake, and/or corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), an inhibitor of food intake. We measured concentrations of NPY and CRH in specific hypothalamic regions [i.e., arcuate nucleus (ARC), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), ventromedial nucleus and dorsomedial nucleus] of 7- to 8-wk-old lean and ob/ob mice at 1 or 3 h after intracerebroventricular leptin administration. No rapid-onset effects of leptin on hypothalamic NPY or CRH concentrations were observed in intact mice. The addition of leptin to hypothalamic preparations from intact mice also did not alter NPY or CRH secretion. Glucocorticoids may oppose leptin actions. Consistent with this, leptin administration to adrenalectomized mice markedly reduced CRH concentrations in the ARC within 3 h after injection. This rapid reduction in CRH concentration in the ARC after leptin administration is more likely due to stimulated CRH release from this region than to decreased synthesis/transport from the PVN because leptin stimulates CRH synthesis in the PVN. Within 20 min after exposure to leptin, NPY secretion from hypothalamic preparations obtained from adrenalectomized mice was lowered by 27% and CRH secretion was elevated by 51%. The current study demonstrates that leptin rapidly influences the secretion of hypothalamic NPY and CRH and that these actions of leptin within the hypothalamus are restrained by the presence of endogenous corticosterone.

Abstract
Recent advances in our understanding of highly conserved mechanisms that control cell fate determination are paving the way towards rationally designed biologics that modulate specific cell fate decisions. Cell fate decisions leading to proliferation, differentiation or apoptosis are crucial elements in the pathogenesis of countless human diseases. Biopharmaceuticals designed to regulate such processes in specific cell types in vivo or ex vivo have vast potential applications in oncology, stem cell technology, immunomodulation and neuropathology. One of the most conserved mechanisms controlling cell fate determination is based upon Notch-ligand interactions and subsequent signaling events. Recent studies have shown that this mechanism regulates cell differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis in a wide variety of cell maturation processes and in neoplastic cells. These observations identify the Notch signaling network as a promising drug target for numerous indications. In this review, we describe: 1) potential drug targets in the Notch signaling network; 2) the Notch agonists and antagonists developed so far, including recombinant proteins, antibody-based agents, synthetic peptides, antisense oligonucleotides and gene therapy approaches, as well as possible strategies to design novel Notch-targeting biopharmaceuticals; 3) the possible clinical applications of such biopharmaceuticals and 4) a model strategy for the selection and developement of a Notch-targeting biopharmaceutical.

Abstract
Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a naturally occurring compound shown to inhibit carcinogen-induced preneoplastic lesion formation in mouse mammary organ culture and tumorigenesis in the two-stage mouse skin model. Cancer chemopreventive potential was also suggested in various assays reflective of the three major stages of carcinogenesis. Anti-initiation activity was indicated by its antioxidant and antimutagenic effects, inhibition of the hydroperoxidase function of cyclooxygenase (COX), and induction of phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes. Antipromotion activity was indicated by antiinflammatory effects, inhibition of production of arachidonic acid metabolites catalyzed by either COX-1 or COX-2, and chemical carcinogen-induced neoplastic transformation of mouse embryo fibroblasts. Antiprogression activity was demonstrated by its ability to induce human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60) cell differentiation. Moreover, pretreatment of mouse skin with resveratrol significantly counteracted 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by numerous biochemical responses. Resveratrol reduced the generation of hydrogen peroxide, and normalized levels of myeloperoxidase and oxidized-glutathione reductase activities. It also restored glutathione levels and superoxide dismutase activity. As judged by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, resveratrol selectively inhibited TPA-induced expression of c-fos and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), but did not affect other TPA-induced gene products including COX-1, COX-2, c-myc, c-jun, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. These data indicate that resveratrol may interfere with reactive oxidant pathways and/or modulate the expression of c-fos and TGF-beta 1 to inhibit tumorigenesis in mouse skin. As reported herein, in addition to the activities described above, resveratrol inhibited the de novo formation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in mouse macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. This finding suggests an additional mechanism by which resveratrol may function as a cancer chemopreventive agent.

Application of TPA to mouse skin induces oxidative stress, as evidenced by numerous biochemical responses, including significant generation of H2O2 and enhanced levels of myeloperoxidase and oxidized glutathione reductase activities and decreases in glutathione levels and superoxide dismutase activity. TPA treatment also elevates the expression of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), c-myc, c-fos, c-jun, transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). As currently reported, pre-treatment of mouse skin with resveratrol negated several of these TPA-induced effects in a dose-dependent manner. H2O2 and glutathione levels were restored to control levels, as were myeloperoxidase, oxidized glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase activities. As judged by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), TPA-induced increases in the expression of c-fos and TGF-beta1 were selectively inhibited. These data suggest that resveratrol inhibits tumorigenesis in mouse skin through interference with pathways of reactive oxidants and possibly by modulating the expression of c-fos and TGF-beta1.

Abstract
Leptin is proposed to control food intake at least in part by regulating hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY), a stimulator of food intake, and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), an inhibitor of food intake. Ob/ob mice are leptin-deficient and would thus be expected to exhibit alterations in hypothalamic NPY and CRH. We therefore measured concentrations of NPY and CRH in discrete regions of the hypothalamus (i.e., ARC, arcuate nucleus; PVN, paraventricular nucleus; VMH, ventromedial nucleus; DMH, dorsomedial nucleus; and SCN, suprachiasmatic nucleus) of 6.5-7-wk-old ob/ob and lean mice with free access to stock diet, 24 h after food deprivation, and 1 h after refeeding. Fed ob/ob mice had 55-75% higher concentrations of NPY in the ARC, VMH and SCN than lean mice. Food deprivation increased NPY concentrations approximately 70% in the ARC, PVN and VMH of lean mice, and refeeding lowered NPY concentrations approximately 70% in the PVN of these mice. NPY in these hypothalamic regions of ob/ob mice was unresponsive to food deprivation or refeeding. The most pronounced change in CRH concentrations within the regions examined (i.e., ARC, PVN and VMH) occurred in the ARC of lean mice where refeeding lowered CRH concentrations by 75% without influencing ARC CRH concentrations in ob/ob mice. The hypothalamic concentrations of two neuropeptides involved in body weight regulation (i.e., NPY and CRH) in leptin-deficient ob/ob mice respond abnormally to abrupt changes in nutritional status.

Abstract
We determined whether resveratrol, a phenolic antioxidant found in grapes and other food products, inhibited phorbol ester (PMA)-mediated induction of COX-2 in human mammary and oral epithelial cells. Treatment of cells with PMA induces COX-2 and causes a marked increase in the production of prostaglandin E2. These effects were inhibited by resveratrol. Resveratrol suppressed PMA-mediated increases in COX-2 mRNA and protein. Nuclear run-offs revealed increased rates of COX-2 transcription after treatment with PMA, an effect that was inhibited by resveratrol. PMA caused about a 6-fold increase in COX-2 promoter activity, which was suppressed by resveratrol. Transient transfections utilizing COX-2 promoter deletion constructs and COX-2 promoter constructs, in which specific enhancer elements were mutagenized, indicated that the effects of PMA and resveratrol were mediated via a cyclic AMP response element. Resveratrol inhibited PMA-mediated activation of protein kinase C. Overexpressing protein kinase C-alpha, ERK1, and c-Jun led to 4.7-, 5.1-, and 4-fold increases in COX-2 promoter activity, respectively. These effects also were inhibited by resveratrol. Resveratrol blocked PMA-dependent activation of AP-1-mediated gene expression. In addition to the above effects on gene expression, we found that resveratrol also directly inhibited the activity of COX-2. These data are likely to be important for understanding the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties of resveratrol.

Abstract
Relatively little is known about Asian American tobacco and alcohol use patterns. This is particularly true of Chinese living in the United States--either U.S.-born or non-U.S.-born Chinese. This article presents data from a research project studying tobacco and alcohol use patterns in San Francisco's Chinese community. Data were secured both from focus groups and a self-report telephone survey of a random sample of 1,808 Chinese residents in San Francisco. This results indicate that the prevalence of both tobacco and alcohol use is lower for San Francisco's Chinese population than for the general population. Moreover, those persons who report smoking tend to be different from those who report consuming alcohol. The study concludes that specific, culturally relevant tobacco and alcohol prevention programs should be designed to better reach this target population.

Resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in grapes and other food products, was purified and shown to have cancer chemopreventive activity in assays representing three major stages of carcinogenesis. Resveratrol was found to act as an antioxidant and antimutagen and to induce phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes (anti-initiation activity); it mediated anti-inflammatory effects and inhibited cyclooxygenase and hydroperoxidase functions (antipromotion activity); and it induced human promyelocytic leukemia cell differentiation (antiprogression activity). In addition, it inhibited the development of preneoplastic lesions in carcinogen-treated mouse mammary glands in culture and inhibited tumorigenesis in a mouse skin cancer model. These data suggest that resveratrol, a common constituent of the human diet, merits investigation as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent in humans.
