Abstract
We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (κ), skewness (S), and variance (σ2) of net-proton multiplicity (Np-Np) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (μB) between 200 and 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products κσ2 and Sσ, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long-range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the square root of s(NN) dependence of κσ2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μB below 200 MeV.

Abstract
We report the first three-particle coincidence measurement in pseudorapidity (Δη) between a high transverse momentum (p⊥) trigger particle and two lower p⊥ associated particles within azimuth |Δϕ|<0.7 in square root of s(NN)=200 GeV d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Charge ordering properties are exploited to separate the jetlike component and the ridge (long range Δη correlation). The results indicate that the correlation of ridge particles are uniform not only with respect to the trigger particle but also between themselves event by event in our measured Δη. In addition, the production of the ridge appears to be uncorrelated to the presence of the narrow jetlike component.

Abstract
Parity-odd domains, corresponding to nontrivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the system's orbital momentum axis. We investigate a three-particle azimuthal correlator which is a P even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We report measurements of charged hadrons near center-of-mass rapidity with this observable in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at square root of s(NN) = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. A signal consistent with several expectations from the theory is detected. We discuss possible contributions from other effects that are not related to parity violation.

Abstract
Forward-backward multiplicity correlation strengths have been measured with the STAR detector for Au + Au and p + p collisions at square root of s(NN) = 200 GeV. Strong short- and long-range correlations (LRC) are seen in central Au + Au collisions. The magnitude of these correlations decrease with decreasing centrality until only short-range correlations are observed in peripheral Au + Au collisions. Both the dual parton model (DPM) and the color glass condensate (CGC) predict the existence of the long-range correlations. In the DPM, the fluctuation in the number of elementary (parton) inelastic collisions produces the LRC. In the CGC, longitudinal color flux tubes generate the LRC. The data are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of the DPM and indicate the presence of multiple parton interactions.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) and abdominal hysterectomy (AH) on the immune system. Between May 2007 and July 2008, 84 women with uterine myoma were randomized in a double-blind manner to undergo LAVH (n = 42) or AH (n = 42). Plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), C-reactive protein (CRP), T-lymphocyte CD3(+), CD4(+) and CD8(+) subpopulations, and natural killer (NK) cells were measured 24 h before and 24 h and 72 h after surgery. The IL-6, TNF-alpha and CRP levels in both groups increased significantly after surgery compared with pre-operative levels, and were significantly lower in the LAVH versus the AH group. Post-operative CD3(+) and CD8(+) T-cell counts in the AH group decreased significantly compared with pre-operative levels, whereas in the LAVH group they decreased but not to a statistically significant degree. Post-operative CD4(+) T-cell counts in the AH group also decreased significantly at 24 h after surgery, but were significantly increased at 72 h. In conclusion, LAVH does not significantly affect immune function compared with AH, suggesting the preservation of post-operative immunity, however further clinical studies are necessary.

Abstract
Abstract
Based on physical modelling, this paper discusses the feasibility of injecting additives to control the conformance of the cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) and steam drive processes in the Biquan 10 Block of the Henan Oil Field. The lab test results show that waterflooding with the addition of a carbamide surfactant can decrease residual oil saturation by 4.7% and that steam drive with the addition of this same surfactant can improve the sweep volume and increase the oil recovery factor by 17.5%. Also, field application results confirmed that injecting this surfactant in the CSS and steam drive processes can increase oil production, lower steam-oil ratio (SOR) and improve the economic benefitssignificantly.
Introduction
The CSS process has been applied in developing the heavy oil reservoirs in the Henan Oil Field since the late 1980s. It has been clearly demonstrated that with increasing the cycles of steam stimulation, the oil production rate decreases and SOR can rapidly reach the economic limit. For improving the oil production rate and recovery factor, the steam drive process needs to be applied as a subsequent technology. However, the reservoir in the Henan Oil Field is thin and interbedded so it is a challenge to operate the conventional steam drive process. To reduce the steam channeling effect, a number of high temperature resistant plugging surfactants have been tested, but they could not achieve ideal and persistent results(1). This paper discusses the development of a new kind of conformance control agent ? carbamide surfactant. The lab testing results and field applications of the steam drive process with the addition of a carbamide surfactant in Well Group 577, Biqian 10 Block, Henan Oil Field, are described in detail below.
Mechanism and Physical Modelling
When the carbamide surfactant is injected into the reservoir with steam, carbamide decomposes into CO2 and NH3 under high temperatures. The decomposition can be expressed as follows:
Equation (available in full paper)
The physical modelling shows that, with increasing temperature and pressure, the carbamide decomposes even faster but its concentration does not affect the decomposition speed. The produced CO2 dissolves in heavy oil and NH3 can react with some acid in the oil. As a result, the heavy oil volume expands and viscosity decreases. At 50 °C, when the oil-carbamide solution (30 wt% carbamide) ratio is 4 to 1, the oil viscosity can be reduced by 73% to 80%. The single tube displacement efficiency test shows that adding carbamide solution (30 wt% carbamide) into hot water will increase the displacing efficiency by 6.5%.
Field Application and Discussion
Reservoir Geology and Production History
Well pattern 577 in the east of Biqian 10 block was selected for the field test. The well pattern is an inverted 9-spot with injector-producer spacing of 70 m and 100 m. The pay zone is the IV-9 layer of the H-3 interval in the Hetaoyuan Formation. The basic reservoir parameters are as follows:

Abstract
We report K/pi fluctuations from Au + Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]= 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. K/pi fluctuations in central collisions show little dependence on incident energy and are on the same order as those from NA49 at the Super Proton Synchrotron in central Pb + Pb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=12.3 and 17.3 GeV. We report results for the collision centrality dependence of K/pi fluctuations and results for charge-separated fluctuations. We observe that the K/pi fluctuations scale with the charged particle multiplicity density.

Abstract
In ultraperipheral relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a photon from the electromagnetic field of one nucleus can fluctuate to a quark-antiquark pair and scatter from the other nucleus, emerging as a rho{0}. The rho{0} production occurs in two well-separated (median impact parameters of 20 and 40 F for the cases considered here) nuclei, so the system forms a two-source interferometer. At low transverse momenta, the two amplitudes interfere destructively, suppressing rho{0} production. Since the rho{0} decays before the production amplitudes from the two sources can overlap, the two-pion system can only be described with an entangled nonlocal wave function, and is thus an example of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. We observe this suppression in 200 GeV per nucleon-pair gold-gold collisions. The interference is 87%+/-5%(stat.)+/-8%(syst.) of the expected level. This translates into a limit on decoherence due to wave function collapse or other factors of 23% at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on peri-operative blood loss during elective total hip replacement. Patients were randomized to receive enteric-coated diclofenac 50 mg ( n = 18), rofecoxib 12.5 mg ( n = 17) or placebo ( n = 16) administered orally three times daily for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Severe adverse effects resulting in discontinuation of trial participation occurred in six patients in the diclofenac group, five patients in the rofecoxib group and two patients in the placebo group; all drop-outs occurred at various times after surgery. Compared with placebo, peri-operative blood loss increased by 32% in the diclofenac group and by 7% in the rofecoxib group. Total mean ± SD blood loss was 1040 ± 136 ml in the diclofenac group, 844 ± 83 ml in the rofecoxib group and 789 ± 82 ml in the placebo group. Thus, administering a non-selective NSAID 2 weeks prior to elective total hip replacement significantly increases peri-operative blood loss.

Abstract
Three-particle azimuthal correlation measurements with a high transverse momentum trigger particle are reported for pp, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Dijet structures are observed in pp, d+Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions. An additional structure is observed in central Au+Au data, signaling conical emission of correlated charged hadrons. The conical emission angle is found to be theta=1.37+/-0.02(stat)-0.07+0.06(syst), independent of p_{ perpendicular}.

Abstract
We measure directed flow (v_{1}) for charged particles in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 and 62.4 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity (eta), transverse momentum (p_{t}), and collision centrality, based on data from the STAR experiment. We find that the directed flow depends on the incident energy but, contrary to all available model implementations, not on the size of the colliding system at a given centrality. We extend the validity of the limiting fragmentation concept to v_{1} in different collision systems, and investigate possible explanations for the observed sign change in v_{1}(p_{t}).

Abstract
We report precision measurements of the Feynman x (xF) dependence, and first measurements of the transverse momentum (pT) dependence, of transverse single-spin asymmetries for the production of pi0 mesons from polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 200 GeV. The xF dependence of the results is in fair agreement with perturbative QCD model calculations that identify orbital motion of quarks and gluons within the proton as the origin of the spin effects. Results for the pT dependence at fixed xF are not consistent with these same perturbative QCD-based calculations.

Abstract
We report a new STAR measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A(LL) for inclusive jet production at midrapidity in polarized p + p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The data, which cover jet transverse momenta 5<p(T)<30 GeV/c, are substantially more precise than previous measurements. They provide significant new constraints on the gluon spin contribution to the nucleon spin through the comparison to predictions derived from one global fit to polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the opening angle distribution between pairs of jets produced in high-energy collisions of transversely polarized protons. The measurement probes (Sivers) correlations between the transverse spin orientation of a proton and the transverse momentum directions of its partons. With both beams polarized, the wide pseudorapidity (-1< or = eta < or = +2) coverage for jets permits separation of Sivers functions for the valence and sea regions. The resulting asymmetries are all consistent with zero and considerably smaller than Sivers effects observed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We discuss theoretical attempts to reconcile the new results with the sizable transverse spin effects seen in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and forward hadron production in pp collisions.

Abstract
We present first measurements of the phi-meson elliptic flow (v2(pT)) and high-statistics pT distributions for different centralities from radical sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In minimum bias collisions the v2 of the phi meson is consistent with the trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the Omega to those of the phi as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model based on the recombination of thermal s quarks up to pT approximately 4 GeV/c, but disagrees at higher momenta. The nuclear modification factor (R CP) of phi follows the trend observed in the K S 0 mesons rather than in Lambda baryons, supporting baryon-meson scaling. These data are consistent with phi mesons in central Au+Au collisions being created via coalescence of thermalized s quarks and the formation of a hot and dense matter with partonic collectivity at RHIC.

Abstract
The Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment presents new limits on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon cross section using data from an exposure of 3409 kg.d taken with low-background CsI(Tl) crystals at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The most stringent limit on the spin-dependent interaction for a pure proton case is obtained. The DAMA signal region for both spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions for the WIMP masses greater than 20 GeV/c2 is excluded by the single experiment with crystal scintillators.

Abstract
The STAR collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) reports measurements of the inclusive yield of nonphotonic electrons, which arise dominantly from semileptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, over a broad range of transverse momenta (1.2<p(T)<10 GeV/c) in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The nonphotonic electron yield exhibits an unexpectedly large suppression in central Au+Au collisions at high p(T), suggesting substantial heavy-quark energy loss at RHIC. The centrality and p(T) dependences of the suppression provide constraints on theoretical models of suppression.

Abstract
The decay J/psi-->NNpi provides an effective isospin 1/2 filter for the piN system due to isospin conservation. Using 58x10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Electromagnetic Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/psi-->ppi-n+c.c. events are obtained. Besides the two well-known N* peaks at around 1500 MeV/c2 and 1670 MeV/c2, there are two new, clear N* peaks in the ppi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV/c2 and 2030 MeV/c2 with statistical significance of 11sigma and 13sigma, respectively. We identify these as the first direct observation of the N*(1440) peak and a long-sought missing N* peak above 2 GeV/c2 in the piN invariant mass spectrum.

Abstract
Amiloride-sensitive epithelial Na+channels (ENaC) play a crucial role in Na+transport and fluid reabsorption in the kidney, lung, and colon. The magnitude of ENaC-mediated Na+transport in epithelial cells depends on the average open probability of the channels and the number of channels on the apical surface of epithelial cells. The number of channels in the apical membrane, in turn, depends on a balance between the rate of ENaC insertion and the rate of removal from the apical membrane. ENaC is made up of three homologous subunits: α, β, and γ. The COOH-terminal domain of all three subunits is intracellular and contains a proline-rich motif (PPxY). Mutations or deletion of this PPxY motif in the β- and γ-subunits prevent the binding of one isoform of a specific ubiquitin ligase, neural precursor cell-expressed, developmentally downregulated protein (Nedd4–2), to the channel in vitro and in transfected cell systems, thereby impeding ubiquitin conjugation of the channel subunits. Ubiquitin conjugation would seem to imply that ENaC turnover is determined by the ubiquitin-proteasome system, but when Madin-Darby canine kidney cells are transfected with ENaC, ubiquitin conjugation apparently leads to lysosomal degradation. However, in untransfected renal cells (A6) expressing endogenous ENaC, ENaC is indeed degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Nonetheless, in both transfected and untransfected cells, the rate of ENaC degradation is apparently controlled by Nedd4–2 activity. In this review, we discuss the role of the ubiquitin conjugation and the alternative degradative pathways (lysosomal or proteasomal) in regulating the rate of ENaC turnover in untransfected renal cells and compare this regulation to that of transfected cell systems.

Abstract
The growth hormone (GH) axis is sensitive to alteration in body weight and there is evidence that central noradrenergic systems regulate neurones that produce growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin (SRIF). This study reports semiquantitative estimates of the noradrenergic input to neuroendocrine GHRH and SRIF neurones in the sheep of different body weights. We also studied the effects of altered body weight on expression of dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH), the enzyme that produces noradrenalin from dopamine. Ovariectomised ewes were made Lean (39.6 +/- 2.6 kg; Mean +/- SEM) by dietary restriction, whereas Normally Fed animals (61.2 +/- 0.8 kg) were maintained on a regular diet. Brains were perfused for immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation. The Mean +/- SEM number of GHRH-immunoreactive (-IR) cells was lower in Normally Fed (65 +/- 7) than in Lean (115 +/- 14) animals, whereas the number of SRIF-IR cells was similar in the two groups (Normally Fed, 196 +/- 17; Lean 230 +/- 21). Confocal microscopic analysis revealed that the percentage of GHRH-IR cells (Normally Fed 36 +/- 1.5% versus Lean 32 +/- 4.6%) and percentage of SRIF-IR cells (Normally Fed 30 +/- 40.4% versus Lean 32 +/- 2.3%) contacted by noradrenergic fibres did not change with body weight. FluoroGold retrograde tracer injections confirmed that noradrenergic projections to the arcuate nucleus are from ventrolateral medulla and noradrenergic projections to periventricular nucleus arise from the ventrolateral medulla, nucleus of solitary tract, locus coeruleus (LC) and the parabrachial nucleus (PBN). DBH expressing cells were identified using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation and the level of expression (silver grains/cell) quantified by image analysis. The number of DBH cells was similar in Normally Fed and Lean animals, but the level of expression/cell was lower (P < 0.02) in the PBN and LC of Lean animals. These results provide an anatomical basis for the noradrenergic regulation of GHRH and SRIF cells and GH secretion. Altered activity or noradrenergic neurones in the PBN and LC that occur with reduced body weight may be relevant to the control of GH axis.

Abstract
Amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) are responsible for transepithelial Na(+) transport in the kidney, lung, and colon. The channel consists of three subunits (alpha, beta, and gamma). In Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and Xenopus laevis oocytes transfected with all three ENaC subunits, neural precursor cell-expressed developmentally downregulated protein (Nedd4-2) promotes ubiquitin conjugation of ENaC. For native proteins in some cells, ubiquitin conjugation is a signal for their degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, whereas in other cell types ubiquitin conjugation is a signal for endocytosis and lysosomal protein degradation. When ENaC are transfected into MDCK cells, ubiquitin conjugation leads to lysosomal degradation. In this paper, we characterize the involvement of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway in the regulation of functional ENaC in untransfected renal A6 cells expressing native ENaC subunits. In contrast to transfected cells, we show that total cellular alpha-, beta-, and gamma-ENaC subunits are polyubiquitinated and that ubiquitin conjugation of subunits increases when the cells are treated with a proteasome inhibitor. We show that Nedd4-2 is associated with alpha- and beta-subunits and is associated with the apical membrane. We also show the Nedd4-2 can regulate the number of functional ENaC subunits in the apical membrane. The results reported here suggest that the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway is an important determinant of ENaC function in untransfected renal cells expressing endogenous ENaC.

Abstract
An enhancement near the m(p)+M(Lambda) mass threshold is observed in the combined pLambda and pLambda invariant-mass spectrum from J/psi-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. It can be fit with an S-wave Breit-Wigner resonance with a mass m=2075+/-12(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV and a width of Gamma=90+/-35(stat)+/-9(syst) MeV; it can also be fit with a P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance. Evidence for a similar enhancement is also observed in psi(')-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. The analysis is based on samples of 5.8x10(7)J/psi and 1.4x10(7)psi(') decays accumulated in the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Abstract
The decay psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L) is observed using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L))=(5.24+/-0.47+/-0.48)x10(-5). Compared with J/psi-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L), the psi(2S) branching fraction is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD "12%" rule. The result, together with the branching fractions of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (pi(+)pi(-) and K+K-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.

Abstract
We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma<30 MeV/c(2) at the 90% confidence level. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known particle.

Abstract
A search of neutrino magnetic moment was carried out at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station at a distance of 28 m from the 2.9 GW reactor core. With a high purity germanium detector of mass 1.06 kg surrounded by scintillating NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) crystals as anti-Compton detectors, a detection threshold of 5 keV and a background level of 1 kg(-1) keV(-1) day(-1) at 12-60 keV were achieved. Based on 4712 and 1250 h of reactor ON and OFF data, respectively, the limit on the neutrino magnetic moment of mu(nu;(e))<1.3x10(-10)mu(B) at 90% confidence level was derived. An indirect bound of the nu;(e) radiative lifetime of m(3)(nu)tau(nu)>2.8x10(18) eV(3) s can be inferred.

Abstract
Coal gangue is a kind of waste from coal mine processing. Polyaluminium ferric chloride (PAFC), a new type of inorganic composite coagulant, was prepared by using the waste from the Mineral Bureau of Yanzhou, China, hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate as raw materials. The relationship between the stability of ferric ion and the ionic strength of solution was investigated. The zeta potential of PAFC hydrolysis products of PAFC and the coagulation performances under different pH value were discussed. The turbidity removal properties of PAFC, polyaluminium (PAC) and polyferric sulfate (PFS) were compared, and the color removal effect of PAFC for the wastewater containing suspended dyes was also tested. In addition, the coagulation performance of PAFC for actual wastewaters from petrochemical plant, iron and steel plant, and coal mining processing was evaluated. The experimental results suggest that PAFC took a maximum value of zeta potential at about pH 5.8 on the positive side. Compared with PAC, PAFC gives better turbidity removal performance in the range of pH from 7.0 to 8.4. PAFC gives good color removal performance on suspension dyes. PAFC also gives good wastewater purifying results for the actual wastewater. Therefore, PAFC is a high-effect and stable water treatment agent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the functional consequences of episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2)-causing nonsense and missense mutations in vitro and to characterize the basis of fluctuating weakness in patients with E2A. BACKGROUND Mutations in CACNA1A encoding the Ca(v)2.1 calcium channel subunit cause EA2 through incompletely understood mechanisms. Although the Ca(v)2.1 subunit is important for neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction, weakness has not been considered a feature of EA2. METHODS The disease-causing mutations in three unrelated patients with EA2 and fluctuating weakness were identified by mutation screening and sequencing. Mutant constructs harboring mutations R1281X, F1406C, R1549X were transfected into COS7 cells and expressed for patch clamp studies. Single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) was performed in patients to examine synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction. RESULTS Functional studies in COS7 cells of nonsense and missense EA2 mutants demonstrated markedly decreased current densities compared with wild type. SFEMG demonstrated jitter and blocking in these patients with EA2, compared with normal subjects and three patients with SCA-6. CONCLUSION EA2-causing missense and nonsense mutations in CACNA1A produced mutant channels with diminished whole cell calcium channel activity in vitro due to loss of function. Altered biophysical properties or reduced efficiency of plasma membrane targeting of mutant channels may contribute to abnormal neuromuscular transmission, manifesting as myasthenic syndrome.

Abstract
Volatile compounds produced by intact plants and ground leaf tissue from endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were collected by a purge-and-trap procedure and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry The volatile compound profile from ground leaf tissue was similar between E+ and E- clonal plants; however, the sheaths of E+ clonal plants produced higher levels of 1-octen-3-ol, a characteristic volatile compound derived from lipid peroxidation in fungi, which was absent in E- clonal plants. Intact plants produced fewer volatiles than macerated leaves. At 25 degrees C, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol acetate was the most abundant compound, accounting for 77 and 89% of the total volatile emission from E+ and E- plants, respectively. Higher temperature (32 degrees C) significantly reduced the production of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol acetate. Nonanal was the most abundant compound at 32 degrees C accounting for 52 and 45% of the total volatile emission from E+ and E- plants. Treatment of E+ and E- plants with jasmonic acid (JA) dramatically altered the volatile compound profile. The levels of (E)-beta-ocimene increased more than 200-fold and accounted for at least 43% of the total volatile emission. Although the presence of endophyte resulted in some qualitative and quantitative differences in the production of volatile compounds, they are unlikely to account for the differences in insect resistance between E+ and E- plants. Nevertheless, the production of a unique spectrum of volatiles after JA treatment may represent a significant plant-based defense response in tall fescue that is independent of endophyte.

Abstract
A series of studies was conducted to test the antifungal activity of clavicipitaceous endophytes and to identify potential fungal inhibitors in this symbiotic infection. A diverse group of endophytes was screened for antifungal activity using organic extracts from liquid fermentation cultures. Fungal inhibitors were purified from fermentation cultures of Epichloë festucae using a bioassay-directed extraction with Cryphonectria parasitica as the test organism. Compounds shown to have antifungal activity were subsequently identified using NMR and GC-MS. Extracts from a wide range of fungal isolates had various degrees of antifungal activity, but the greatest antifungal activity was observed in E. festucae and Neotyphodium tembladerae. Three types of inhibitors were isolated from a batch culture of E. festucae, including several indole derivatives, a sesquiterpene, and a diacetamide. Among the indole derivatives, indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-ethanol were identified as the major indoles. These compounds were previously reported in endophytic fungi, and this study suggests a role in host disease resistance against other pathogens. The diversity in fungal inhibitors produced by this endophyte also suggests that fungal inhibitors may act additively or synergistically to reduce colonization of endophyte-infected hosts by potential fungal competitors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the disease-causing mutation and to characterize penetrance and phenotypic variability in a large pedigree with episodic ataxia type 2 (EA-2) previously linked to chromosome 19. BACKGROUND Mutations in the CACNA1A gene on chromosome 19 encoding a calcium channel subunit cause EA-2, which is characterized by recurrent attacks of imbalance with interictal eye movement abnormalities. METHODS The authors used single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis to screen for point mutations, and direct sequencing to identify mutations in CACNA1A. Allele-specific oligonucleotides were designed to detect the presence of the diseased allele in members of their pedigree as well as in normal control subjects. RESULTS Reassessment of members of the pedigree revealed two notable clinical features. Diffuse weakness during attacks of ataxia was a prominent complaint. Two affected individuals had had episodic hemiplegia, one with typical migraine headaches. SSCP analysis revealed aberrant bands in exon 29 in affected members but not in normal control subjects. Direct sequencing of exon 29 identified a C-to-T change at position 4914 of the coding sequence of CACNA1A, predicting an early stop code at codon 1547. Two asymptomatic mutation carriers demonstrated the incomplete penetrance of this mutation. CONCLUSIONS A nonsense mutation in CACNA1A causes episodic ataxia and complaint of weakness, and may be associated with hemiplegia.

Abstract
The SCA6 mutation, a small expansion of a CAG repeat in a calcium channel gene CACNA1A, was identified in three pedigrees. Point mutations in other parts of the gene CACNA1A were excluded and new clinical features of SCA6 reported--namely, central positional nystagmus and episodic ataxia responsive to acetazolamide. The three allelic disorders, episodic ataxia type 2, familial hemiplegic migraine, and SCA6, have overlapping clinical features.

Abstract
We searched for mutations in the voltage-gated calcium channel gene, CACNA1A, in nine propositi of families with migraine headaches and episodic vertigo inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. All 47 exons and flanking introns in CACNA1A were subjected to single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified genomic DNA. Exons with aberrantly migrating fragments were sequenced using standard techniques. We also determined the CAG repeat length at the 3' end of CACNA1A. Several polymorphisms were found but no mutations identified in any of the 47 exons of the 9 patients. No index-case had a CAG repeat length greater than 13 (normal <17). Mutations in CACNA1A are not common in families with migraine headaches and episodic vertigo. Other ion channel genes expressed in the brain and inner ear remain candidate genes.

Abstract
With the recent report of mutations in the calcium channel gene CACNA1A in two families with episodic ataxia type 2, we investigated a patient with nonfamilial episodic vertigo and ataxia responsive to acetazolamide for similar mutations. Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of exon 23 identified an extra band in the patient that was not present in other relatives or in normal controls. Exon 23 of the patient showed a spontaneous C to T substitution at position 4410 resulting in an early stop codon. Patients with nonfamilial episodic ataxia may respond to acetazolamide and may have mutations in CACNA1A.

Abstract
We describe a family with severe progressive cerebellar ataxia involving the trunk, the extremities, and speech. The proband, who has prominent atrophy of the cerebellum, shown by magnetic resonance imaging, was confined to a wheelchair at the age of 44 years. Two sons have episodes of vertigo and ataxia that are not responsive to acetazolamide. Quantitative eye-movement testing showed a consistent pattern of abnormalities localizing to the cerebellum. Genotyping suggested linkage to chromosome 19p, and SSCP showed an aberrant migrating fragment in exon 6 of the calcium-channel gene CACNA1A, which cosegregated with the disease. Sequencing of exon 6 identified a G-->A transposition in one allele, at nucleotide 1152, resulting in a predicted glycine-to-arginine substitution at codon 293. The CAG-repeat expansion associated with spinocerebellar ataxia 6 was not present in any family members. This family is unique in having a non-CAG-repeat mutation that leads to severe progressive ataxia. Since a great deal is known about the function of calcium channels, we speculate on how this missense mutation leads to the combination of clinical symptoms and signs.
