Abstract
Calcium ion in the spray water diminishes the efficacy of glyphosate. Ammonium sulphate (AS) is long shown to be the most efficacious remedy to this antagonism. However, it is sometimes claimed that acidified lecithins or terpenic alcohols can also be used to this aim, and even ethoxylated amines (EA) provided that calcium concentrations are not higher than 5 mM. We investigated these claims by examining dose-response curves of barley plants treated with glyphosate at various calcium concentrations in the presence of these adjuvants. Calcium ion increased the slope of the curves and ED50 values, indicating a decrease in efficacy. Acidified lecithins and terpenic alcohols did not modify the response of barley to glyphosate observed in the presence of calcium ion. AS restored the ED50 and slope values observed in the absence of calcium ion. It was concluded that the inhibition of glyphosate efficacy by calcium ion was not relieved by terpenic alcohols and acidified lecithins but was completely reverted by AS. EA decreased ED50 and ED90 values of the response curves established in the presence of calcium ion without influencing the slopes (which remained high). As a consequence, at calcium concentrations up to 5 mM the response curves obtained with AS and EA intersected. It followed that in the presence of EA, ED50 values were higher than AS, whereas ED90 values were lower. By contrast, at 10 mM calcium the response curves did not intersect and consequently, in the presence of EA, ED50 and ED90 values were both higher than AS. Since ED90 relates to efficacies sought in the field, our experiments explain why at low calcium concentrations EA may appear as a better remedy than AS. Glyphosate formulations containing ammonium sulphate or a higher concentration in surfactants than usual glyphosate formulations were also studied. In the presence of calcium ion they behaved in a way which was in agreement with the above observations.

Abstract
The binding of two mono-acylated lipid monomers by plant lipid transfer proteins (LTP1s) presents an attractive field of research that could help our understanding of the functional role of this protein family. This task has been investigated in the case of barley LTP1 because it is known to exhibit a small cavity in its free state. The titration with lipids could not be followed by fluorescence with the native protein. Indeed, this LTP1 possesses a tyrosine residue on its C-terminus, Tyr91, which is not sensitive to lipid binding but mainly contributes to the fluorescence signal intensity. However, the binding of 1-myristoylglycerophosphatidylcholine (MyrGro-PCho) could be monitored by fluorescence after removal of Tyr91 by a carboxypeptidase. These experiments returned a dissociation constant of about 1 microM and showed that the protein can indeed bind two monomers. This result was corroborated by molecular modelling where the structure of the complex between barley LTP1 and MyrGro-PCho was derived from that determined in the case of wheat [Charvolin, D., Douliez, J.P., Marion, D., Cohen-addad, C. & Pebay-Peyroula, E. (1999) Eur. J. Biochem. 264, 562-568.]. Results from isothermal titration calorimetry experiments indicated non-classic titration behaviour but also suggested that two lipids could be bound by the protein. Finally, barley LTP1 binds two omega-hydroxypalmitic acid, a compound found in the family of cutin monomers. The fact that the binding of two lipids could be related to the physiological role of this protein family is discussed.

Abstract
Researchers from 5 Japanese universities have developed a plant growth facility (Space Plant Box) for seed to seed experiments under microgravity. The breadboard model of the Space Plant Box was fabricated by assembling subsystems developed for microgravity. The subsystems include air conditioning and water recycle system, air circulation system, water and nutrient delivery system, lighting system and plant monitoring system. The air conditioning and water recycle system is simply composed of a single heat exchanger, two fans and hydrophilic fibrous strings. The strings allow water movement from the cooler fin in the Cooling Box to root supporting materials in the Plant Growth Chamber driven by water potential deficit. Relative humidity in the Plant Growth Chamber can be changed over a wide range by controlling the ratio of latent heat exchange to sensible heat exchange on the cooling fin of the heat exchanger. The transpiration rate was successfully measured by circulating air inside the Plant Growth Chamber only. Most water was recycled and a small amount of water needed to be added from the outside. The simple, air conditioning and water recycle system for the Space Plant Box showed good performance through a barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growth experiment.

Abstract
New evidence, obtained using a robust method for measuring the delta(15)N of NO(3)(-)-N in soil, is consistent with denitrification being the major determinant in the vertical distribution of NO(3)(-)-delta(15)N in soil profiles. These data also suggest that varying moisture regimes result in different effects of soil NO(3)(-)-N leaching on residual whole soil delta(15)N.

Abstract
Historically, manure has been recognized as an excellent soil amendment that can improve soil quality and provide nutrients for crop production. In areas of high animal density, however, the potential for water pollution resulting from improper storage or disposal of manure may be significant. The objective of this study was to determine the P balance of cultivated soils under barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) production that have received long-term annual manure amendments. Nonirrigated soils at the study site in Lethbridge, AB, Canada, have received 0, 30, 60, or 90 Mg manure ha(-1) (wet wt. basis) while irrigated plots received 0, 60, 120, and 180 Mg ha(-1) annually for 16 yr. The amount of P removed in barley grain and straw during the 16-yr period was between 5 and 18% of the cumulative manure P applied. There was a balance between P applied in manure and P recovered in crops and soils (to the 150-cm depth) of nonirrigated plots during the 16-yr study. In irrigated plots, as much as 1.4 Mg P ha(-1) added (180 Mg ha(-1) yr(-1) treatment) was not recovered over 16 yr, and was probably lost through leaching. The risk of ground water contamination with P from manure was greater in irrigated than nonirrigated plots that have received long-term annual manure amendments. Manure application rates should be reduced in nonirrigated and irrigated plots to more closely match manure P inputs to crop P requirements.

Abstract
The herbicide 4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butyric acid (2,4-DB) is principally used in the USA on peanuts, soybeans and alfalfa. In Europe, it is used on undersown spring barley and grassland (with clover). The genetic toxicity in vitro of the dimethylamine salt of 2,4-DB was examined by employing a range of end points including gene mutation in bacteria (Ames test) and mammalian cell cultures (CHO/HGPRT assay), cytogenetic abnormalities in mammalian cells (CHO/chromosomal aberration assay), and induction of DNA damage and repair in rat hepatocytes. There were no indications of genotoxic potential for 2,4-DB in the first three of these assays. One of the two criteria for a positive response in the UDS assay was exceeded but the increases did not exceed the second criteria for a positive response. The test material was therefore evaluated as weakly active in this assay. The weight of the evidence clearly indicates that 2, 4-DB is not genotoxic to mammals and are consistent with the reported lack of carcinogenic potential for 2,4-DB in both mice and rats.

Abstract
Six Holstein cows in early lactation were used in a double 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine the effects of feeding diets with pea silage, relative to barley silage, or alfalfa silage. Cows were fed rations formulated to contain 50:50 forage:concentrate ratio. Two ruminally fistulated cows were used in a randomized complete block design to determine ruminal nutrient degradability for pea silage relative to barley and alfalfa silages. Pea silage contained lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber, and starch concentrations but higher crude protein than barley silage. Compared with alfalfa silage, pea silage had higher starch and NDF but lower crude protein content. Pea and alfalfa silage had similar effective ruminal degradability of dry matter, which was higher than that of barley silage. The rate of degradation and effective ruminal degradability of NDF was highest for alfalfa silage, intermediate for pea silage and lowest for barley silage. Results of the lactation trial showed that dry matter intake and milk yield were not affected by forage source. Milk composition was similar for cows fed pea or barley silage; however, cows fed pea silage produced milk with a higher fat and a lower protein percentage than those fed the alfalfa silage. Pea silage can replace barley or alfalfa silage as a forage source for dairy cows in early lactation.

Abstract
Three groups of six yearling steers (three rumen fistulated plus three nonfistulated) fed one of three different grain diets (85% cracked corn, 15% whole cottonseed and 70% barley, or 85% barley) were inoculated with 10(10) CFU of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strain 3081, and the presence of the inoculated strain was followed in the rumen fluid and feces for a 10-week period. E. coli O157:H7 was rapidly eliminated from the rumen of the animals on all three diets but persisted in the feces of some animals up to 67 days after inoculation, suggesting that the bovine hindgut is the site of E. coli O157:H7 persistence. A significant difference existed in the levels of E. coli O157:H7 shed by the animals among diets on days 5, 7, 49, and 63 after inoculation (P < 0.05). No significant difference was found between the levels shed among diets on days 9 through 42 and on day 67 (P > 0.05). The number of animals that were culture positive for E. coli O157:H7 strain 3081 during the 10-week period was significantly higher for the barley fed group (72 of 114 samplings) as opposed to the corn fed group (44 of 114 samplings) (P < 0.005) and the cottonseed and barley fed group (57 of 114 samplings) (P < 0.05). The fecal pH of the animals fed the corn diet was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than the fecal pH of the animals fed the cottonseed and barley and barley diets, likely resulting in a less suitable environment for E. coli O157:H7 in the hindgut of the corn fed animals. E. coli O157:H7 strain 3081 was present in 3 of 30 (corn, 1 of 10; cottonseed, 1 of 10; barley, 1 of 10) animal drinking water samples, 3 of 30 (corn, 1 of 10; cottonseed, 0 of 10; barley, 2 of 10) water trough biofilm swabs, 5 of 30 (corn, 0 of 10; cottonseed, 2 of 10; barley, 3 of 10) feed samples, and 30 of 30 manure samples taken from the pens during the entire experimental period. Mouth swabs of the steers were also culture positive for E. coli O157:H7 strain 3081 in 30 of 180 samples (corn, 7 of 60; cottonseed, 4 of 60; barley, 19 of 60) taken during the 10-week period. Minimizing environmental dissemination of E. coli O157:H7 in conjunction with diet modification may reduce numbers of E. coli O157:H7-positive cattle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have suggested that dietary fiber exerts a therapeutic effect on IBD patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a dietary combination of germinated barley foodstuff (GBF), derived from the aleurone and scutellum fraction of germinated barley, plus Clostridium butyricum against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis in rats. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a 3% DSS diet containing GBF only, GBF plus C. butyricum, cellulose only (control) or cellulose plus C. butyricum for 8 days. The mucosal damage (macroscopic and microscopic inflammation) and fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels were then determined. RESULTS The combination of GBF plus C. butyricum most effectively prevented bloody diarrhea and mucosal damage. The GBF-only diet also showed some preventive effects. With respect to fecal SCFAs, the combination of GBF plus C. butyricum most effectively increased the fecal SCFA level. CONCLUSION The dietary combination of GBF plus C. butyricum most effectively suppressed DSS-induced experimental colitis in rats. These effects may be closely associated with its high activity to increase SCFA levels in the gut lumen. The potential clinical efficacy of GBF in IBD patients is also discussed.

Abstract
The net absorption of amino acids (AA) in young pigs fed a barley-based control diet (C) and diets where barley was replaced by 200 g/kg fresh weight of dried lucerne (Medicago sativa; L20), white clover (Trifolium repens; W20) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne; PR20) meal was studied. Castrated male pigs were fitted with permanent catheters in the hepatic portal vein and mesenteric artery, and the hepatic portal net absorption of AA was estimated from the porto-arterial plasma concentration differences and the hepatic portal-vein blood flow. In general, the essential AA (EAA) concentrations in the hepatic portal vein reached peak levels 90 min after feeding and thereafter exhibited a transient decline. Maximum porto-arterial differences were reached between 1 and 3 h postprandially for most of the AA. The cumulative net absorption of non-essential AA (NEAA) and EAA did not differ significantly between the barley-based diet and diets W20 and PR20. Due to a lower intake of AA on diet L20, the cumulative net absorption of NEAA and EAA was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than diet C. With the exceptions of the EAA arginine, cystine and valine, and the NEAA glutamic acid + glutamine and glycine, there were no significant differences in the absorption coefficients for the EAA and NEAA between the diets. In addition, the pattern of the total EAA in the mixture absorbed postprandially did not differ significantly between the diets. The present study gives support to the contention that the replacement of barley AA with forage meal AA in a barley-based diet for growing pigs should be expected to result in minor differences in the net portal flux of AA.

Abstract
We used eight multiparous Holstein cows in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to evaluate the effects and possible interactions between silage particle size and concentrate level on chewing activities and productivity of cows fed barley-based total mixed rations (TMR). Diets were designed with two forage-to-concentrate ratios (low forage, 45:55, high forage 55:45), combined with two theoretical chop lengths of barley silage (short = 4.68 mm and long = 18.75 mm). Diets were formulated to provide similar and above-minimum neutral detergent fiber recommended for cows in early lactation. Increasing silage particle size of the forage did not affect dry matter intake. The 3.5% fat-correct milk and fat yields trended higher for increased particle size. Percent milk protein was higher for short particle size. Increasing the concentrate levels in the diets increased proportions of milk protein and lactose, but not milk fat. Cows fed short silage spent 90 min less per day chewing and ruminating than did those on long silage. Total chewing activity per kilogram of forage intake was higher for cows on long silage compared with those on short silage diets. Although a reduction in silage particle size did not depress milk fat, rumination and chewing activity were significantly reduced. These results suggest that particle size of the silage may have dominant control over chewing activity despite adequate neutral detergent fiber intakes.

Abstract
Differences in glycemic responses to various starchy foods are related to differences in the rate of starch digestion and absorption. In this study, the importance of the degree of gelatinization and the product thickness for postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses to rolled oats and barley were studied in healthy subjects (5 men and 5 women). Thick (1.0 mm) rolled oats were made from raw or preheated (roasted or steamed) kernels. In addition, thin (0.5 mm) rolled oats were made from roasted or roasted and steamed (processed under conditions simulating commercial production) oat kernels. Finally, steamed rolled barley kernels (0.5 or 1.0 mm) were prepared. All thin flakes elicited high glucose and insulin responses [glycemic index (GI), 88-118; insulinemic index (II), 84-102], not significantly different from white wheat bread (P: > 0.05). In contrast, all varieties of thick oat flakes gave significantly lower metabolic responses (GI, 70-78; II, 58-77) than the reference bread (P: < 0.05). Thick barley flakes, however, gave high glucose and insulin responses (GI, 94; II, 84), probably because the botanical structure underwent more destruction than the corresponding oat flakes. We conclude that minimal processing of oat and barley flakes had a relatively minor effect on GI features compared with the more extensive commercial processing. One exception was thick oat flakes, which in contrast to the corresponding barley flakes, had a low GI.

Abstract
The short-term actions of Lavandula officinalis and Equisetum arvense dry extracts, and of isoquercitrin, flavonoid present in Equisetum arvense, on in vitro fermentation by rumen microbes were studied in batch culture. The orchard grass hay:barley ratios in the three experimental diets were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50 on a DM basis. The production rates of all volatile fatty acids except isobutyrate were strongly influenced by the composition of the diet and to a lesser extent, by plant extracts, with significant interactions between both factors. When hay was the only substrate, the addition of L. officinalis and E. arvense enhanced the fermentation rate by 50%, through an increased release of acetate and propionate. On the contrary, with the two other diets, the fermentation rate was strongly lowered by isoquercitrin. Gas outputs were not significantly influenced by plant extracts.

Abstract
Protein composition and functional activity of various polysome subpopulations isolated from Vicia faba L. leaves and Triticum aestivum L. and Hordeum vulgare L. seedlings were studied. Membrane- and cytoskeleton-bound polysomes were more active in the wheat germ cell-free translational system than free polysomes. Several non-ribosomal proteins were detected in the polysome preparations by gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis: (1) a canonical actin of mol wt 42 kDa; (2) a 40 kDa protein, demonstrating affinity for ribosomes, sharing some determinants with actin, and present predominantly in the subpopulations of bound polysomes; and (3) an acidic ribosome-associated p40 evenly distributed between free and bound polysomes. The possibility of involvement of these proteins in interactions between polysomes and the actin cytoskeleton is discussed.

Abstract
Seasonal availability of lamb in the Western United States contributes to a large fluctuation in lamb supply and value. However, alternatives to fall marketing may not be practical unless palatability traits are acceptable. A 3-yr study was conducted to investigate 1) the effects of slaughter age (7 to 8; 10 to 11; or 14 to 15 mo) on carcass and palatability characteristics of wethers fed an 80% barley diet (Exp. 1); and 2) the effects of finishing on range or on an 80% barley diet on carcass and palatability traits of 14- to 15-mo-old wethers (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, no differences (P = .27) were detected in flavor intensity or longissimus muscle area among slaughter age groups, but fat depth was greater (P < .05) for 7- to 8-mo-old wethers than for 10- to 11- or 14- to 15-mo-old wethers. Year x slaughter age interactions were detected (P < .10) for hot carcass weight, Warner-Bratzler shear value, body wall thickness, and percentage kidney fat. Hot carcass weight was greater (P < .05) for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers than for both groups of younger wethers in yr 1, did not differ (P = .53) among slaughter ages in yr 2, and was greater (P < .05) for 10- to 11- than for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers in yr 3. Warner-Bratzler shear values did not differ (P > .10) among slaughter ages in yr 1 and 3, but shear values for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers were greater (P < .05) than for both younger slaughter age groups in yr 2. Percentage kidney fat was lower (P < .05) for 14- to 15- than for 7- to 8-mo-old wethers in all years. In Exp. 2, flavor intensity of the meat did not differ (P = .35) between finishing systems, but longissimus muscle area was greater (P = .02) for range-finished wethers than for wethers fed an 80% barley diet. Year x finishing treatment interactions were detected (P < .10) for shear values, body wall thickness, percentage kidney fat, and fat depth. Shear values were greater (P = .10) for range-finished wethers than for wethers fed an 80% barley diet in yr 1, but did not differ (P > .55) in yr 2 and 3. Body wall and fat measurements were greater (P < .10) for wethers fed an 80% barley diet than for range-finished wethers in all years except yr 3, when fat depth did not differ (P = .47). Overall, slaughtering wethers fed an 80% barley diet or range-finished wethers at older ages produced acceptable carcasses with desirable meat palatability traits.

Abstract
Resting barley seeds stored under oxygen at a pressure of 100 lb/in.(2) for 4 and 6 weeks exhibit a significant number of chromosome aberrations and mutations. The amount of cytogenetic damage increases with length of storage. The frequencies and types of changes are similar to those induced by 500 r to 1000 r of x-rays.

Abstract
To measure effects of diet on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and beef appearance, 144 crossbred beef steers (333+/-.44 kg) were allotted within weight block (3) to a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of dietary treatments. Main effects were grain (barley or corn) and level of potato by-product (PB) (0, 10, or 20% of diet DM). Steers were fed diets containing 83% concentrate (grain plus PB), 10% supplement, and 7% alfalfa on a DM basis for an average of 130 d. Level of PB quadratically affected (P < .10) DM intake and gain such that steers fed 10% PB ate more and gained faster. Corn-fed steers were more (P < .05) efficient (5.8 vs 6.3 kg DM/kg gain) and had more (P < .05) kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (2.2 vs 2.0%) than barley-fed steers. A grain x PB interaction was detected (P < .10) for marbling score, which was minimized in steers fed barley diets (small 0) but maximized in those fed corn diets (small 30) at 10% PB. Diet did not affect beef firmness or beef color score. Barley-fed beef had whiter fat (P < .05) than corn-fed beef (2.6 vs 2.9 on a 1 to 7 scale); however, fat luster score was not affected by diet. Small differences were noted in fatty acid profile, purge, drip loss, and muscle pH. No differences were noted in color measurements due to dietary treatment over 7 d of retail shelf life. Overall, differences were small and probably not biologically important. These results indicate that these diets had minimal effects on beef appearance and carcass characteristics, meat composition, and water retention properties.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of barley- or corn-based diets containing 0, 10, or 20% potato by-product (DM basis) on Warner-Bratzler shear force and palatability of beef. One hundred forty-four crossbred beef steers (333+/-.44 kg) were allotted within weight block (3) to a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of dietary treatments. Main effects were grain (barley or corn) and level of potato by-product (0, 10, or 20% of diet DM). There were a total of 18 pens with eight steers per pen and three pens per treatment. Steers were fed diets containing 83% concentrate (grain plus potato by-product), 10% supplement, and 7% alfalfa (DM basis) for an average of 130 d. Longissimus muscle cuts were used for Warner-Bratzler shear force determination (four steers per pen) and evaluation (two steers per pen) by a 10-member trained laboratory panel, a professional flavor/texture profile panel, and by consumer panels. Diet did not affect (P > .10) Warner-Bratzler shear force or trained laboratory panel tenderness, juiciness, and flavor intensity scores. Flavor/texture profile panel scores indicated feeding a corn-based diet as opposed to barley-based diet produced a more appropriate well-balanced and well-blended beef flavor and texture. However, the magnitudes of the differences were relatively small, and flavor and texture amplitude ratings for both barley- and corn-fed beef were well above average. Beef from steers fed 10 or 20% potato by-product had lower (P < .05) incidences of inappropriate aromatics and aftertastes, which may have a slightly beneficial effect on beef flavor, but flavor amplitude was not affected (P > .05) by level of potato. Moreover, consumer panel overall acceptability scores were not affected by diet. Thus, feedlot diets containing corn or barley with or without potato by-product should result in palatable beef products.

Abstract
To improve the malt rootlet value, the antioxidant potentialities of this byproduct of the malting industry have been analyzed. Three extracts have been considered from the points of view of dry matter yield, level of antioxidant compounds, and efficiency and cost of the extraction protocols. They respectively contain rootlet oil, free phenolic compounds, and bound phenolic compounds. The rootlet oil contains only a low quantity of tocopherols (respectively, 20.6 and 4.2 microgram of alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol per gram of dry rootlets), and a weak antioxidant activity, evaluated in a stripped corn oil by following spectrophotometrically the conjugated dienes, has been pointed out. The bound compound extract presents a good antioxidant power mainly due to the presence of trans-ferulic and trans-p-coumaric acids, but the dry matter yield is low (2%). The free compound extract has a good antioxidant power, and the valuable dry matter, mainly composed of proteins (52%), sugars (33%), and reducing compounds (5.5%), has a yield of 12%. The mixing of bound and free compound extracts presents an antagonistic effect on the antioxidant power, but a synergistic effect has been pointed out for the mixing of alpha-tocopherol and free compound extract.

Abstract
UV-B radiation of 280 nm wavelength (UV280) and low intensity (2.0 W/m2) gives rise to an important oxygen evolution (OE) loss in photosystem II (PSII) particles isolated from the thylakoid membrane of plant chloroplasts on the one hand, and to structural changes, or transitions, in the proteins of the PSII complex on the other hand. The latter UV280 effect was studied in this work by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. First, irradiation of the PSII particles with UV280 for about 40 min causes an almost complete loss of OE activity. The remaining OE after 15, 20, 30 and 40 min is respectively 52, 44, 27 and 12% of the OE activity in control PSH particles kept in darkness. Secondly, difference FT-IR spectra of PSII particles irradiated for 30 min, i.e., [PSII irradiated with UV280]-minus-[PSII non-irradiated], show that the UV280 light is at the origin of significant IR absorbance changes in several spectral regions: (i) amide I (1696-1620 cm(-1)) and amide II (1580-1520 cm(-1)), (ii) tyrosine side chain (1620-1580 cm(-1) and 1520-1500 cm(-1), i.e., the v8a, v8b and v19a vibrational modes, respectively), and (iii) chlorophylls (1750-1696 cm(-1)). Thirdly, comparison of the UV-B effect reported here with structural changes induced by heat-stress in PSII proteins [M. Joshi, M. Fragata, Z. Naturforsch. 54c (1999) 35-43] clearly indicates that the stability of the functional centers in the PSII complex is dependent on a dynamic equilibrium between a-helix conformers and extended chain (beta-strand) structures. In this framework, transient 'alpha-helix-to-beta-strand transitions' are susceptible of giving rise in vivo to recurrent changes in the activity of the PSII complex, and as such act as a control mechanism of the photosynthetic function in the thylakoid membrane.

Abstract
We investigate and propose a method for assessment of the illumination condition covering two light sources. The method may be of some support for color vision and multispectral analysis methods that rely on a specific illumination condition. It is constrained to classifying the illumination condition for dielectric objects illuminated by two light sources. The reflected light is modeled by the dichromatic reflection model, which describes the light as the sum of its body reflections and surface reflections. Further, reflected light from an object illuminated by two light sources may give from one to four primary reflections depending on the condition, and it may be expressed as an additive mixture of these reflections. An additive mixture of two reflections expressed in chromaticities is limited to falling within the area enclosed by the chromaticities of the primary reflections of the light sources. So after finding the set of primary chromaticities enclosing the pixel points' chromaticities, it is possible for one to assess the current illumination condition. Since the method operates on pixel points globally, it is independent of illumination geometry and hence may be used on irregular objects. Two experiments are performed. One uses regular objects in a well-controlled laboratory environment and demonstrates that the pixel-point distribution is as expected. The second experiment demonstrates the method's potential use in support of spectroscopic analysis of vegetation through assessing the illumination condition of barley plants in an outdoor illumination condition.
