Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus [coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)] pandemic has introduced extraordinary life changes and stress, particularly in adolescents and young adults. Initial reports suggest that depression and anxiety are elevated during COVID-19, but no prior study has explored changes at the within-person level. The current study explored changes in depression and anxiety symptoms from before the pandemic to soon after it first peaked in Spring 2020 in a sample of adolescents and young adults (N = 451) living in Long Island, New York, an early epicenter of COVID-19 in the U.S. METHODS Depression (Children's Depression Inventory) and anxiety symptoms (Screen for Child Anxiety Related Symptoms) were assessed between December 2014 and July 2019, and, along with COVID-19 experiences, symptoms were re-assessed between March 27th and May 15th, 2020. RESULTS Across participants and independent of age, there were increased generalized anxiety and social anxiety symptoms. In females, there were also increased depression and panic/somatic symptoms. Multivariable linear regression indicated that greater COVID-19 school concerns were uniquely associated with increased depression symptoms. Greater COVID-19 home confinement concerns were uniquely associated with increased generalized anxiety symptoms, and decreased social anxiety symptoms, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents and young adults at an early epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. experienced increased depression and anxiety symptoms, particularly amongst females. School and home confinement concerns related to the pandemic were independently associated with changes in symptoms. Overall, this report suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic is having multifarious adverse effects on the mental health of youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, epidemiological and clinical studies have revealed that depressive disorders can present in early childhood. To clarify the validity and prognostic significance of early childhood-onset depression, we investigated diagnostic and functional outcomes in later childhood and adolescence. METHODS A community sample (N = 516) was assessed for psychopathology at ages 3 and 6 using the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment. When participants were 9, 12, and 15 years old, children and parents completed the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia and measures of symptoms and functioning. RESULTS In models adjusting for covariates, depressed 3/6-year-old children were more likely to experience subsequent episodes of depressive disorders and exhibited significantly higher rates of later anxiety disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and suicidality compared to children without depressive disorders at age 3/6. Early childhood depression was also associated with higher levels of mother, but not child, reported depressive symptoms at age 15 compared to children without depressive disorders at age 3/6. Finally, depression at age 3/6 predicted lower levels of global and interpersonal functioning and higher rates of treatment at age 15 compared to children without depressive disorders at age 3/6. CONCLUSIONS Results support the clinical significance of depression in 3/6-year-old children, although further studies with larger samples are needed.

Abstract
Temperament involves stable behavioral and emotional tendencies that differ between individuals, which can be first observed in infancy or early childhood and relate to behavior in many contexts and over many years.1 One of the most rigorously characterized temperament classifications relates to the tendency of individuals to avoid the unfamiliar and to withdraw from unfamiliar people, objects, and unexpected events. This temperament is referred to as behavioral inhibition or inhibited temperament (IT).2 IT is a moderately heritable trait1 that can be measured in multiple species.3 In humans, levels of IT can be quantified from the first year of life through direct behavioral observations or reports by caregivers or teachers. Similar approaches as well as self-report questionnaires on current and/or retrospective levels of IT1 can be used later in life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Life events (LEs) are a risk factor for first onset and relapse of psychotic disorders. However, the impact of LEs on specific symptoms - namely reality distortion, disorganization, negative symptoms, depression, and mania - remains unclear. Moreover, the differential effects of negative v. positive LEs are poorly understood. METHODS The present study utilizes an epidemiologic cohort of patients (N = 428) ascertained at first-admission for psychosis and followed for a decade thereafter. Symptoms were assessed at 6-, 24-, 48-, and 120-month follow-ups. RESULTS We examined symptom change within-person and found that negative events in the previous 6 months predicted an increase in reality distortion (β = 0.07), disorganized (β = 0.07), manic (β = 0.08), and depressive symptoms (β = 0.06), and a decrease in negative symptoms (β = -0.08). Conversely, positive LEs predicted fewer reality distortion (β = -0.04), disorganized (β = -0.04), and negative (β = -0.13) symptoms, and were unrelated to mood symptoms. A between-person approach to the same hypotheses confirmed that negative LEs predicted change in all symptoms, while positive LEs predicted change only in negative symptoms. In contrast, symptoms rarely predicted future LEs. CONCLUSIONS These findings confirm that LEs have an effect on symptoms, and thus contribute to the burden of psychotic disorders. That LEs increase positive symptoms and decrease negative symptoms suggest at least two different mechanisms underlying the relationship between LEs and symptoms. Our findings underscore the need for increased symptom monitoring following negative LEs, as symptoms may worsen during that time.

Abstract
Youth personality is hypothesized to mediate the intergenerational transmission of internalizing disorders. However, this has rarely been examined. We tested whether the intergenerational transmission of depressive and anxiety disorders is mediated by youth neuroticism and extraversion, and how parent personality influenced these relationships. Participants included 550 adolescent girls, aged 13-15 years at baseline (T1), and a coparticipating biological parent. Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed by interview at T1, and adolescents were reinterviewed every 9 months for 3 years (T2-T5). Parent and youth personality was assessed at T1. Four path models examined direct and indirect effects of parent psychopathology and personality (neuroticism and extraversion) on youth outcomes, with youth neuroticism and extraversion as mediators in separate models. In the model examining the effects of parent psychopathology via T1 youth neuroticism, there were direct effects of parent depression on T2-T5 youth depressive disorders and indirect effects of parent anxiety disorders on T2-T5 youth depressive and anxiety disorders. When parent neuroticism was added, indirect effects of T1 parent anxiety disorders and neuroticism on T2-T5 youth depressive and anxiety disorders via T1 youth neuroticism were significant. In the model examining T1 youth extraversion as a mediator, there were significant direct effects of parent depressive and anxiety disorders on T2-T5 youth depressive and anxiety disorders, respectively. Finally, when adding parent extraversion, indirect effects of parent extraversion on T2-T5 youth depressive and anxiety disorders via youth extraversion were significant. Abstract
BACKGROUND The etiology of child and adolescent anxiety remains poorly understood. Although several previous studies have examined associations between prenatal maternal psychological functioning and infant and child health outcomes, less is known about the impact of maternal anxiety specific to pregnancy and cortisol during pregnancy on childhood anxiety outcomes. METHODS Participants included 496 mother-child pairs from the PROGRESS longitudinal birth cohort in Mexico City. Anxiety symptoms were assessed at age 8-11 years during 2018-2019 using the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. Pregnancy-specific anxiety was assessed using an expanded version of the Pregnancy Anxiety Scale. Maternal biological stress response during pregnancy was assessed using salivary cortisol measures (area under the curve, cortisol awakening response, and diurnal slope). Linear regression models were used to estimate associations between maternal anxiety and cortisol in relation to continuous child anxiety symptom T-scores. Models were adjusted for maternal age, socioeconomic status, child sex and age, and gestational age at saliva collection. RESULTS We found that higher levels of pregnancy-specific anxiety in the mother were associated with higher anxiety symptoms in the child (β: 1.30, 95% CI: 0.19, 2.41). We additionally observed an association between higher maternal total cortisol output during pregnancy and higher anxiety symptoms in the child (β: 1.13, 95% CI: 0.25, 2.01). DISCUSSION These findings highlight the importance of screening for maternal pregnancy-specific anxiety and the need to identify interventions and support for mothers during pregnancy in order to promote healthy outcomes for mothers and their children.

Abstract
Few investigations have directly compared personality and internalizing symptoms stability within the same sample and have not included personality facets. This study examined rank-order stability and mean-level change of Big Five domains, facets of neuroticism and extraversion, and internalizing symptoms in a sample of 550 adolescent females. Personality and symptoms were assessed every nine months for three years. Three year rank-order stability was higher for personality domains and facets compared to symptoms. Notable exceptions included lower stability of depressivity and positive emotionality facets. Facets and symptoms showed similar mean level change. Overall, we observed modest and variable temporal differences between symptoms and traits; symptoms exhibited high rank-order stability and low mean-level change, but domains and facets were generally more stable.

Abstract
Objective: Existing measures of irritability rarely distinguish phasic and tonic forms, despite their different clinical implications. We developed the Emotional Outburst Inventory (EMO-I) as a brief screening tool for phasic irritability in youth in clinical settings. The EMO-I assesses outburst severity, frequency, and duration. This article reports on its psychometric properties. Methods: The sample included 2,552 youth (mean [SD] age = 12.1 [3.5] years) evaluated at a university outpatient clinic between February 2005 and June 2014. Parents of 1,772 youth (69.4%) endorsed some anger problem. We assessed convergent, construct, and incremental validity of the EMO-I using a variety of measures, including the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) dysregulation profile (DP) and the CBCL irritability subscale. We also examined associations with hospitalization, emergency department visits, atypical antipsychotic use, help-seeking for outbursts, and impairment. Results: The EMO-I severity had good internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.83) and was significantly associated with other irritability constructs (median correlation, r = 0.66, all P < .01). Outburst severity was associated with impairment (β = .87, P < .01) and with hospitalization, emergency department referral, antipsychotic use, and help-seeking for outbursts (median odds ratio = 1.27, all P < .01). The EMO-I showed incremental validity over and above the CBCL-DP and CBCL irritability subscale (explaining an additional 2%-12% of variance) when examining associations with impairment, hospitalization, emergency department referral, antipsychotic use, and help-seeking for outbursts. Conclusions: The EMO-I showed good internal consistency and convergent, construct, and incremental validity. Outburst behavior severity had stronger associations with important clinical variables than did outburst frequency and duration.

Abstract
Growing research substantiates the role of neighborhood disadvantage in contributing to early pubertal maturation and higher body mass index; however, previous studies in this area have design limitations. Specifically, many studies have been cross-sectional, have used singular indicators of neighborhood disadvantage (e.g., poverty), and have provided mixed findings about the role of biological sex. The present study addresses these gaps by examining how neighborhood resources (spanning educational, health/environmental, and social/economic domains) predict trajectories of pubertal maturation and body mass index using longitudinal multi-wave data. Furthermore, multigroup analyses assessed how these associations may differ by child biological sex. Participants in this study (n = 505; 54% male) were assessed every 3 years at age 9 (M = 9.17, SD = 0.39), age 12 (M = 12.63, SD = 0.43), and age 15 (M = 15.23, SD = 0.37). Approximately 12% of the sample identified as Hispanic, and 11% as non-White. Using multigroup latent growth analyses, the study examined how neighborhood resources predicted trajectories of pubertal maturation and body mass index using multi-wave data across middle childhood through mid-adolescence. The findings suggested that greater neighborhood resources were cross-sectionally associated with lower pubertal development and predicted slower trajectories across time. Although all girls in the study eventually progressed through pubertal development, girls in lower resourced neighborhoods experienced a much earlier onset of puberty. Additionally, greater neighborhood resources predicted lower BMI both cross sectionally and longitudinally. Specifically, higher resourced neighborhoods were protective against obesity risk for both boys and girls across mid-childhood through mid-adolescence. In sum, the study highlights the role of broader neighborhood factors on early maturity risk for female children, and obesity risk for children regardless of biological sex.

Abstract
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with anxiety disorders in children. Both ADHD and anxiety in childhood has been linked to overprotective parenting styles. In the current study we examine a model wherein early ADHD symptoms predict overprotective parenting, which in turn predicts anxiety symptoms later in childhood. In Study 1 we utilize cross-sectional data in 102 child/parent dyads between the ages of 5 and 7 years old and Study 2 extends these findings by examining this same mediation model longitudinally in 376 child/parent dyads who were assessed when children were 3, 6, and 9 years old. Results from both studies supported a mediation model wherein the relationship between child ADHD symptoms and child anxiety symptoms was mediated by parental overprotection. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to examine overprotective parenting as a mechanism underlying the heterotypic continuity or sequential comorbidity of ADHD to anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
Knowing the age at which the sexual orientation disparity in depression and anxiety symptoms first emerges and the early determinants of this disparity can suggest optimal timing and targets of supportive interventions. This prospective cohort study of children ages 3 to 15 (n = 417; 10.6% same-sex-attracted; 47.2% assigned female at birth) and their parents sought to determine the age at which the sexual orientation disparity in depression and anxiety symptoms first emerges and whether peer victimization and poor parental relationships mediate this disparity. Same-sex-attracted youth first demonstrated significantly higher depression symptoms at age 12 and anxiety symptoms at age 15 than exclusively other-sex-attracted youth. Age 12 peer victimization mediated the sexual orientation disparity in age 15 depression symptoms. Age 12 poor mother-child relationship mediated the sexual orientation disparity in age 15 anxiety symptoms. The findings are discussed in terms of implications for developmentally appropriate interventions against social stress during early development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Irritable mood is a transdiagnostic clinical feature that is present in multiple psychiatric disorders. Although irritability is frequently examined as a unitary construct, two dimensions of irritability, tonic (i.e., irritable mood) and phasic (i.e., temper outbursts), have been hypothesized. However, few studies have examined whether tonic and phasic irritability are empirically separable and predict different forms of psychopathology. METHODS We utilized data from a longitudinal study of a community sample of 550 girls (age 13.5-15.5 years) followed at 9-month intervals for 3 years. We conducted exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using items from three self-report inventories: the International Personality Item Pool Anger scale, Temperament and Affectivity Inventory Anger scale, and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire Anger scale. RESULTS The EFA identified dimensions that were consistent with tonic and phasic irritability. Tonic irritability at baseline independently predicted the development of depressive disorders and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in subsequent waves. Phasic irritability independently predicted a decreased probability of GAD, but an increased probability of oppositional defiant, conduct, and substance use disorder, and greater risky sexual behavior and relational aggression during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Tonic and phasic irritability appear to be separable constructs with unique implications for later psychopathology and related behavior among adolescent girls. It is important to consider this distinction in research on the etiology and pathophysiology of irritability and developing effective treatments.

BACKGROUND Mood-state biases in maternal reports of emotional and behavioral problems in their children have been a major concern for the field. However, few studies have addressed this issue from a measurement invariance perspective. METHODS Using data from baseline assessment of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (n = 8,507 mother-child dyads; youth aged 9-11 years), we examined how dimensions of maternal psychopathology, including internalizing problems, were associated with indices of bias in reports of their children's dimensions of internalizing, externalizing, neurodevelopmental, detachment, somatoform psychopathology using moderated non-linear factor analysis. Moderated non-linear factor analyses examined multiple potential biases in maternal reports of youth psychopathology. RESULTS Across analyses, we found very small magnitudes of associations between dimensions of maternal psychopathology and biases in reports of child emotional and behavioral problems. CONCLUSIONS Based on these results, we find little psychometric evidence for maternal psychopathology biasing reports of child behavior problems.

Abstract
Few studies have examined the longitudinal trajectory of suicidal ideation (SI) in community samples, particularly during emerging adulthood. Additionally, there is scant data on predictors of longer-term course of SI across this period. We examined multiple domains of adolescent psychosocial and clinical functioning as predictors of SI trajectory and explored whether biological sex moderates those associations. The data came from the Oregon Adolescent Depression Project. Participants completed self-reports of psychosocial and clinical functioning and interviews assessing psychopathology in mid-late adolescence. SI was assessed using up to seven annual mailer assessments spanning ages 19-31. Multilevel growth models found that SI declined across emerging adulthood. Multiple indices of adolescent functioning were associated with higher levels of SI three years later. Few adolescent functioning constructs predicted faster reductions in SI, and no constructs predicted slower longitudinal reductions (or increases) in SI. Similar associations were found when controlling for adolescent SI. Lastly, we found little evidence for sex differences in these associations. This work shows that adolescent functioning is largely associated with initial and enduring levels of SI. Moreover, associations were similar between sexes. Given the modest associations found across long periods of time, future research should focus on proximal risk factors for SI.

Abstract
Irritability is increasingly recognized as a significant clinical problem in youth. It is a criterion for multiple diagnoses and predicts the development of a wide range of disorders. Research on etiopathogenesis suggests that genetic and family environmental factors play a role, as do abnormalities in reward and cognitive control circuitry. However, many of these effects are age dependent. Threat-responsive self-regulatory systems and the degree to which irritability manifests as tonic or phasic influence whether irritable youth exhibit more internalizing versus externalizing outcomes.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, interest in the relationship between personality and psychopathology has resurged. However, the clinical problem of adult separation anxiety (ASA) has been largely excluded from this endeavor due to the age-of-onset criterion in older editions of the DSM that prohibited first-onset diagnoses in adulthood. This study tests relationships between ASA symptoms and higher- and lower-order personality traits in a community sample of 565 women. It accounts for systematic error by utilizing informant report, two personality inventories, and data from two time points over three years, and by adjusting for mood state. It also tests longitudinal ASA-personality models. Results indicate that ASA is robustly associated with negative emotionality and its facet of stress reaction, as well as with aggression, alienation, and absorption to somewhat lesser degrees. These relationships are not due to overlap with other traits (except in the case of alienation), or mood-state biases, and they are verified by informants. Moreover, negative temperament predicts greater levels of ASA three years later, adjusting for baseline ASA. Neither positive emotionality or temperament, nor positive emotionality's lower-order scales, were uniquely related to ASA in multitrait models, whereas relationships between ASA and disinhibition and constraint were inconsistent. These findings lay the groundwork for future research testing the mechanisms and causal links between these personality traits and ASA and may help clinicians anticipate traits that are associated with ASA in order to tailor treatments to patients' personalities. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the Preschool Feeling Checklist (PFC) utility for predicting later mental disorders and functioning for children and assess whether the PFC's predictive utility differs as a function of childhood poverty. STUDY DESIGN We analyzed data from a prospective longitudinal study of preschoolers in St Louis. Preschoolers (N = 287) were recruited from primary care sites and were assessed annually for 10-15 years. The PFC screened for depressive symptoms. Later age-appropriate psychiatric diagnostic interviews were used to derive Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, diagnoses. Regression and moderation analyses, and multilevel modeling were used to test the association between the PFC and later outcomes, and whether this relationship was moderated by income-to-needs. RESULTS The PFC predicted major depressive disorder (OR 1.13, P < .001), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (OR 1.16, P < .001), and mania (OR 1.18, P < .05) in adolescence and early adulthood. Income-to-needs was a moderator in the predictive pathway between the PFC and later major depressive disorder (OR 1.10, P < .05) and mania (OR 1.19, P < .001) with the measure less predictive for children living in poverty. The PFC predicted worse functioning by the final assessment (b = 1.71, SE = 0.51, P = .001). CONCLUSIONS The PFC served as an indicator of risk for later attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and impairment in all children. It has predictive utility for later mood disorders only in children living above the poverty line. Predicting depression in children living below the poverty line may require consideration of risk factors not covered by the PFC.

Abstract
Person-centered analyses, such as latent profile analysis, provide an approach to assessing individual differences in child temperament that aligns with typological theory and is well positioned for translation to applied settings. In a community sample, latent profile analysis was conducted using seven temperament traits assessed through laboratory observation when children were three- and six-years-old. At age 3, a four-class model fit best and subgroups were labeled “typical,” “sluggish,” “surgent,” and “dysregulated,” based on the pattern of class-specific means. A five-class model fit best at age 6 and subgroups were labeled “typical,” “sluggish,” “outgoing,” “active-impulsive” and “negative affect.” Associations between class membership and mother-reported temperament traits, concurrently assessed, were mostly consistent with the class identities. Comparison of subgroup membership across waves generally demonstrated patterns of continuity across groups characterized by similar trait patterns. This paper provides an illustrative guide for temperament researchers in the implementation of latent profile analysis, addressing important methodical considerations. Increased utilization of person-centered approaches like latent profile analysis could lead to important advances in the study of child temperament, such as improved understanding of the continuity of temperamental styles and more targeted risk assessment.

Abstract
Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the trait propensity to react negatively to uncertainty. To date, very few studies have explored early childhood predictors of IU. The current study identifies relations between child temperament assessed at age 3 (N = 559) and IU assessed at ages 12 (N = 432) and 15 (N = 415). Temperament was assessed through both laboratory observation (Laboratory Temperament Assessment Battery) and maternal report (Children's Behavior Questionnaire). IU was assessed through both maternal rating and child self-report using the 12-item Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale for Children. Higher levels of temperamental negative emotionality/neuroticism and lower levels of temperamental positive emotionality/extraversion assessed at age 3 predicted higher levels of IU in early-mid adolescence. Unique relationships were found at the trait facet level, and differences were observed between informants. These findings suggest that certain early child temperament traits can serve as markers of risk for difficulty dealing with uncertainty later in life. Future research should explore whether this relationship translates to increased risk for psychopathology.

Abstract
Initial reports suggest that mental health problems were elevated early in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, few studies have followed-up participants as the pandemic evolved and examined both between and within person predictors of symptom trajectories. In the current study, adolescents and young adults (N=532) in New York were surveyed monthly between March 27th and July 14th, 2020, a period spanning the first peak and subsequent decline in COVID-19 infection rates in the region. Surveys assessed symptoms of depression and anxiety using the Child Depression Inventory and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders, as well as experiences related to the pandemic. Multilevel growth modeling indicated that symptoms of depression and anxiety peaked around late April/early May and then decreased through May-July. Some pandemic experiences followed a similar quadratic trajectory, while others decreased linearly across the study. Specific relationships emerged between some types of pandemic experiences and depression and anxiety symptoms. While symptoms of depression and anxiety in youth may have been elevated early in the pandemic, these findings suggest they subsided across Spring-Summer of 2020, with higher levels of both corresponding to a period of peak infection rates and decreases paralleling the decline in pandemic experiences and COVID-19 infection rates.

In this article, COVID-19 is conceptualized as a unique, compounding, multidimensional stressor that will create a vast need for intervention and necessitate new paradigms for mental health service delivery and training. Urgent challenge areas across developmental periods are discussed, followed by a review of psychological symptoms that likely will increase in prevalence and require innovative solutions in both science and practice. Implications for new research directions, clinical approaches, and policy issues are discussed to highlight the opportunities for clinical psychological science to emerge as an updated, contemporary field capable of addressing the burden of mental illness and distress in the wake of COVID-19 and beyond. Abstract
Limited psychometric information is available to guide best practices for measuring youth irritability. This report compares performance of irritability measures using item response theory (IRT). Study 1 used a sample of 482 early adolescents and compared the parent- and youth-report affective reactivity index (ARI) and irritability factors derived from the parent-report Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and clinician-administered Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders (K-SADS). Study 2 combined data from three childhood samples (N = 811) and compared performance of the parent-report ARI and CBCL and the clinician-administered Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA). The ARI emerged as the best measure of childhood irritability across the developmental periods, while the CBCL and K-SADS provided an adequate amount of information in early adolescents. No measure reliably assessed irritability at modest severity levels. Using IRT across large pools of developmental samples and measures is needed to guide the field in the measurement of youth irritability.
