Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of HPV seropositivity among patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and healthy individuals and to correlate the association between HPV 16 seropositivity and risk of OSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS HPV 16 E6 and E7 plasmids were constructed for the production of recombinant protein, which was used as the antigen in ELISA. HPV ELISA was performed on serum samples from 50 healthy individuals and 50 patients with OSCC. RESULTS Using the HPV ELISA, 30% (OR = 2.25, 95% CI = 0.85-5.93) and 18% (OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 0.53-4.92) of patients with oral cancer were found to be HPV 16 E6 and E7 seropositive, respectively. Significant association was found between HPV 16 seropositivity and increased risk of OSCC in men, but not in male subjects. A similar trend was observed in non-betel quid chewers. CONCLUSIONS Potential associations between HPV 16 E6/E7 seropositivity and oral cancer were revealed in men and non-betel quid chewer subjects, suggesting a possible etiological role of HPV 16 in subgroup of patients with OSCC in Malaysia.

Abstract
Mutations in the Wilms' tumor suppressor gene (WT1) can lead to syndromic forms of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) such as Denys-Drash or Frasier syndrome and can cause isolated SRNS. A mutation within WT1 is a frequent cause of sporadic isolated SRNS in girls. In a worldwide cohort of girls, the rate of occurrence was 10.8%. Previous reports have indicated that in Chinese girls, the detection rate of WT1 mutations is 16.7% for early onset isolated nephrotic syndrome. The detection rate of WT1 mutations in Chinese girls with sporadic isolated SRNS is unknown. We examined WT1 mutations in 14 Chinese girls with sporadic isolated SRNS using polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing and studied a control group of 38 boys with sporadic isolated SRNS. We identified a WT1 mutation in 1 of 14 (7.1% detection rate) Chinese girls with sporadic isolated SRNS. No mutations occurred in WT1 in the remaining 13 girls or the control group. Our investigation supports the necessity of genetic examination for mutations in WT1 in girls with sporadic isolated SRNS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is an indicator of arterial stiffness, which is recognized as a predictor of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between HDL-c and baPWV among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. METHODS A total number of 1133 Chinese (430 men, 703 women) aged from 50 to 90 years old were recruited from Shanghai downtown district. The baPWV and major cardiovascular risk factors of the participants were measured. RESULTS Serum HDL-c was negatively correlated with baPWV (r = -0.143, P < 0.001) after adjustment for age and gender. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that age (P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (P < 0.001), HDL-c (P < 0.001), smoking (P = 0.001), BMI (P = 0.002), fasting plasma glucose (P = 0.004), and white blood cell (P = 0.005) were independently associated with baPWV. After multiple adjustments, participants in the highest quartile of HDL-c had an odds ratio of 0.442 (95% CI 0.268-0.729) for developing high arterial stiffness compared with participants in the lowest quartile. The association remained significant after further adjustment for major cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSION HDL-c has an independent protective effect on arterial stiffness in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Early detection of HDL-c level is important in high risk populations with arterial stiffness. Increasing HDL-c level may be an attractive therapeutic target for the prevention of arterial function and subsequent disease.

Abstract
We report a theoretical study of the supercurrent flowing in a composite topological superconductor (TS) junction, where a magnetized quantum dot is considered in between the two TS leads. Based on the tight-binding model and the Keldysh Green's function method, we found that the magnetization (m) in the dot can significantly modify the current-phase relationship, and a nonzero supercurrent flows at zero superconducting phase gradient when m has a component perpendicular to both the external magnetic field h and the pseudomagnetic field Bsoc from the spin-orbit coupling. The induced zero-phase supercurrent can be modulated substantially by both the magnitude and the direction of m, and takes its maximum value at the critical magnetic field of the topological phase transition. Our findings might provide an experimentally simple and accessible scheme for the detection of Majorana fermions.

Abstract
Downy mildew of cucumber (Cucumis sativus), caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a major foliar disease worldwide. The cucumber inbred lines K8 (resistant to downy mildew) and K18 (susceptible) were used to study the inheritance of resistance to downy mildew. Chromosomal mapping of the resistance genes was completed to provide a theoretical basis for the resistance mechanisms and for marker assisted selection (MAS). Inoculation was used to test the level of resistance to P. cubensis in the F2 and F2:3 families derived from the cross K8 × K18. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis, combined with bulked segregation analysis (BSA), was done with the DNA of F2 plants using 2,360 pairs of SSR primers. JoinMap Version 3.0 and MapInspect were used to construct SSR linkages and to verify the relationships between these SSR linkages and cucumber chromosomes. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of downy mildew resistance was done using MapQTL Version 4.0. Inheritance of resistance to downy mildew in K8 was quantitative. Five QTLs for resistance to downy mildew were detected: dm1.1, dm5.1, dm5.2, dm5.3, and dm6.1. The loci of dm1.1 and dm6.1 were on chromosomes 1 and 6, respectively. The loci of dm5.1, dm5.2, and dm5.3 were on chromosome 5, and were linked. Six linked SSR markers for these five QTLs were identified: SSR31116, SSR20705, SSR00772, SSR11012, SSR16882, and SSR16110. Six and four nucleotide binding site (NBS)-type resistance gene analogs (RGAs) were predicted in the region of dm5.2 and dm5.3, respectively. These results will be of benefit for fine-mapping the major QTLs for downy mildew resistance, and for MAS in cucumber.

Abstract
Diabetes is associated with the death and dysfunction of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells. In other systems, Musashi genes regulate cell fate via Notch signaling, which we recently showed regulates β-cell survival. Here we show for the first time that human and mouse adult islet cells express mRNA and protein of both Musashi isoforms, as well Numb/Notch/Hes/neurogenin-3 pathway components. Musashi expression was observed in insulin/glucagon double-positive cells during human fetal development and increased during directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to the pancreatic lineage. De-differentiation of β-cells with activin A increased Msi1 expression. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress increased Msi2 and Hes1, while it decreased Ins1 and Ins2 expression, revealing a molecular link between ER stress and β-cell dedifferentiation in type 2 diabetes. These effects were independent of changes in Numb protein levels and Notch activation. Overexpression of MSI1 was sufficient to increase Hes1, stimulate proliferation, inhibit apoptosis and reduce insulin expression, whereas Msi1 knockdown had the converse effects on proliferation and insulin expression. Overexpression of MSI2 resulted in a decrease in MSI1 expression. Taken together, these results demonstrate overlapping, but distinct roles for Musashi-1 and Musashi-2 in the control of insulin expression and β-cell proliferation. Our data also suggest that Musashi is a novel link between ER stress and the compensatory β-cell proliferation and the loss of β-cell gene expression seen in specific phases of the progression to type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
ZnO semiconductors at the micro- and nanometre scales are attractive in optical, magnetic, and electronic applications because of their particular features and excellent properties. The whispering gallery mode (WGM) is a general and effective type to amplify the intensity of the luminescence emission, and has gained extensive application in lasing and microcavities. In this contribution, we reported that the smallest whispering gallery optical resonator has been achieved in an individual ZnO nanocone whose diameter gradually reduces from bottom to top in the range of 700 to 50 nm. Using the monochromatic cathodoluminescence (CL) equipment attached at a scanning electron microscopy, we observed the alternating patterns of bright and dark rings from the monochromatic CL image of an individual ZnO nanocone, which is attributed to the WGM-like enhanced luminescence emission when the ZnO nanocone is considered as an optical resonator. The smallest mode number of WGM, N=0, was observed in the ZnO nanocone with a radius of 55 nm for the considered light wavelength of 380 nm, and with a radius of 81 nm for the considered light wavelength of 500 nm, respectively. These results showed that the smallest whispering gallery optical resonator from an individual ZnO nanocone has been fabricated. Experiments are in good agreement with both theoretical predictions and computer simulations based on the finite-difference time domain method with perfectly matched layer boundary conditions. These findings provided valuable information for applications of ZnO micro- and nanostructures in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between nuclear factor κB and the prognosis of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We used immunohistochemical studies to examine nuclear factor κB expression in 42 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The results showed that tumors positive for nuclear factor κB were associated with an increased relapse potential, poor disease-free survival, and reduced overall survival in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Our study indicates that nuclear factor κB could be an independent molecular marker for predicting poor prognosis among patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Understanding the biology of nuclear factor κB-mediated pathways may lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A number of experimental observations have associated elevated estrogen levels with amelioration of inflammation. The involvement of estrogen and estrogen receptor (ER) isotypes in the regulation of inflammation in males is not well understood. In this study, we used specific ERalpha and ERbeta agonists in male mice deficient in estrogen because of a deletion of aromatase (aromatase-knockout [ArKO] mice) to investigate ER isotype utilization in estrogen regulation of inflammation. METHODS Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokine expression and antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) were investigated in male ArKO and WT littermate mice, as well as in response to selective agonists of ERalpha (16alpha-LE2) and ERbeta (8beta-VE2). The therapeutic effect of selective ER agonists was also examined in mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). RESULTS Estrogen deficiency in ArKO mice was associated with significant increases in LPS-induced serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, and interferon-gamma levels, which were significantly abrogated by administration of 16alpha-LE2, but not 8beta-VE2. In contrast, both 16alpha-LE2 and 8beta-VE2 significantly increased LPS-induced IL-10 levels. Estrogen deficiency was also associated with significant exacerbation of AIA and antigen-specific T cell proliferation, which was reversed by administration of either 16alpha-LE2 or 8beta-VE2. ArKO mice showed increased antigen-specific T cell proliferation in response to immunization with type II collagen (CII). Administration of 16alpha-LE2, but not 8beta-VE2, significantly reduced the severity of CIA, which was associated with inhibition of anti-CII-specific IgG. CONCLUSION These data indicate that endogenous estrogen plays an essential inhibitory role in inflammation in male mice and that ERalpha is the dominant receptor that mediates these effects.

Abstract
Current guidelines recommend antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and high viral load. Scant histological data exist for CHB patients with persistently normal ALT (PNALT) because disease progression is thought to be rare. To identify potential predictors of significant histology in the presence of PNALT, we compared the clinical characteristics and histology of Chinese CHB PNALT patients to those in patients with elevated ALT. Percutaneous liver biopsy was performed in 522 CHB patients with Chinese ethnicity who had not had antiviral treatment. Differences in age, ALT, viral load, hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status and liver histology were compared between eligible PNALT (252) and elevated ALT (270) patients. Of the PNALT patients, 38.5% had normal liver histology, 25.4% had significant necroinflammation and/or fibrosis and 8.4% had established cirrhosis. Furthermore, histopathological differences between patients with high-normal ALT (0.5-1.0 x the upper limit of normal (ULN)) and low-normal ALT (≤ 0.5 x ULN) were evaluated. There was a significantly greater prevalence of histopathology in the high-normal group (40.0%) than in the low-normal group (16.6%) (P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression identified that significant histopathology findings in PNALT patients correlated with age (P < 0.001) and ALT level (P < 0.001), with age >40 years and ALT >0.5 x ULN predicting significant histopathology. Our data indicate that liver biopsy is recommended in CHB patients >40 years of age, particularly when their ALT is 0.5-1.0 x ULN. The findings above provide evidence for indication of antiviral therapy in patients with PNALT and significant histopathological change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Wnt pathway is important in cell signalling transduction and is involved in the pathogenesis of multiple tumour types. A comprehensive analysis of the expression of Wnt signalling pathway proteins in mammary phyllodes tumours (PTs) has not been previously performed. AIMS To evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of Wnt pathway proteins in a cohort of PTs, to determine their role in tumour pathogenesis and to identify any associations with patient outcome. METHODS 65 PTs (34 benign, 23 borderline and 8 malignant) diagnosed at a single institution between 1990 and 2006 were analysed. Immunohistochemical stains were performed on tissue microarrays for beta-catenin, Wnt1, Wnt5a, SFRP4 and E-cadherin. Stroma and epithelium were scored separately. RESULTS Stromal cytoplasmic Wnt5a and SFRP4 expression showed significant progressive increases in expression with increasing grade (p = 0.002 and p = 0.02 respectively). Epithelial membranous and stromal nuclear beta-catenin, epithelial cytoplasmic Wnt1 and epithelial E-cadherin all also showed increasing expression with increasing tumour grade, however, the differences were not significant. Disease-free survival was significantly decreased (p = 0.0017) with positive epithelial E-cadherin staining. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that alterations in the Wnt pathway are important in the progression and in the epithelial and stromal interactions in PTs. They have important implications for understanding the pathogenesis of these uncommon but clinically important tumours.

Abstract
The Keldysh Green's function method is employed to study spin-dependent electron transport through a Rashba ring with a quantum dot (QD) embedded in one of its arms. Zero charge bias is applied on the system while a rotating magnetic field is considered in the QD to pump pure spin current. The Rashba spin-orbital coupling (RSOC) can cause a spin precession phase of the electron passing through the ring, so that the quantum interference in the ring can lead to a spin-polarized charge current flowing in the leads and the arm without a QD, whereas only pure spin current is flowing in the other arm with a QD. It is shown that for low frequency ω of the rotating magnetic field, the pumped charge current is proportional to ω unlike the charge current produced by mono-parametric quantum charge pumping, which is usually proportional to ω(2). Moreover, the magnitude, the direction, as well as the spin-polarization of the charge current can be controlled by tuning the device parameters such as the QD energy level, the RSOC strength, and the strength of the electron tunneling between the leads and the QD. Hence the studied device may serve as a generating source for tunable spin-polarized current in the spintronics field.

Abstract
We report a theoretical study of a single-parameter quantum charge pump in the clean zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) system. By Keldysh Green's function method, we show that a pumped current in the ZGNR with an even number of zigzag chains can sharply increase from zero as the frequency matches the Fermi energy, whereas the pumped charge current is always absent in the ZGNR with an odd number of zigzag chains as well as the GNR with armchair edges, it is attributed to the peculiar zero-energy edge state in the ZGNR and the symmetry breaking of the topologically inequivalent carbon atoms due to the zigzag edges. The pumped current in the even-ZGNR decreases with the Fermi energy and its direction is determined by Fermi energy below or above the Dirac point as well as the type of carbon atoms at one edge of the ZGNR. The two-parameter charge pump in the ZGNR is also discussed and the magnitude of the pumped current is comparable to the single-parameter pump when the pumping frequency matches the Fermi energy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the expression of annexin A1 (ANXA1) is associated with the progression of cervical neoplasia. ANXA1 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry in paraffin-embedded cervical tissue samples (n = 234), comprising 52 samples of normal cervical epithelia, 30 of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, 27 of CIN II, 32 of CIN III, and 93 of invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC). ANXA1 expression was strong in normal cervical squamous epithelium and significantly reduced with increasing progression of cervical neoplasia. Moreover, a close association was observed between ANXA1 expression and tumour cell differentiation in ISCC. These preliminary results indicate that ANXA1 may be an effective candidate for detecting CIN lesions and for evaluating tumour cell differentiation in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.

Abstract
Macrophages are the main source of cytokines in atherosclerotic plaques. Modified low-density lipoproteins may stimulate macrophages to produce large quantities of proinflammatory cytokines that promote atherosclerosis. Berberine is the main component of the traditional Chinese medicine umbellatine, which has a widespread effect and was used to treat many diseases clinically. Our previous study found that berberine could increase adipophilin expression in macrophages, which is a target gene of PPARgamma. PPARgamma agonist could decrease proinflammatory cytokines in macrophage. In this study, we investigated the effects and the mechanism of action of berberine on the expression and secretion of TNFalpha, MCP-1, and IL-6 in vitro to identify new pharmacological actions of berberine. The results of RT-PCR and ELISA shows that berberine may inhibit the expression and secretion of the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in macrophages stimulated by acetylated low-density lipoprotein (AcLDL), whereas the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) inhibitor GW9662 could attenuate this effect of berberine. This study demonstrates that berberine may inhibit the expression and production of TNF-alpha, MCP-1, and IL-6 in AcLDL-stimulated macrophages. This effect might be partially mediated through PPARgamma activity.

Abstract
3D diffusion-weighted steady-state free precession imaging (3D DW-SSFP) with isotropic resolution was performed to delineate structures of the human lumbosacral plexus (LSP). 3D DW-SSFP clearly revealed detailed anatomy of the LSP and its branches. Our data suggest that the sequence based on 3D DW-SSFP can be used for high-resolution MR imaging of the peripheral nervous system.

Abstract
This paper shows that in edge detection the regularization factor alpha is a better scale parameter than the standard deviation (sigma) of the Gaussian pre-filter. The alpha scale space, which exhibits the evolutionary behaviour of an edge in various scales, is the basis for the design of a multiscale edge detector (MRCBS). In MRCBS, the scale is determined adaptively according to the local noise level; the thresholds which control the amount of edge details are adjusted according to the scale; and the anisotropic diffusion is applied in the finest scale to further suppress noise.

Abstract
Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy is used to address the ultraviolet (UV) luminescence of a single pencil-like ZnO nanowire whose diameter gradually reduces from bottom to top in the range of 700-50 nm. It is found that the UV emission energy evidently shifts to the high energy with the ZnO nanowire's diameter decreasing and the blue-shift of 90 meV is observed when the nanowire diameter reduces to 50 from 700 nm. The physical mechanism of the UV blue-shift of the ZnO nanowire is attributed to the Burstein-Moss effect under the high carrier concentration.

Abstract
This prospective, three-centre study tested for antimicrobial susceptibility in 898 isolates of Haemophilus influenzae between 2000 and 2002 in Chinese children aged under 5 years with acute upper respiratory tract infection. The average incidence of beta-lactamase production was 12.0%. Overall, 88.0% of isolates were susceptible to ampicillin, 100.0% were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime and azithromycin, and 99.0% were susceptible to ciprofloxacin. Isolates from Beijing and Shanghai had a lower susceptibility to tetracycline (57.0% and 61.0%, respectively) compared with those from Guangzhou (81.0%), while trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole susceptibilities in Shanghai (47.0%) and Guangzhou (54.0%) were significantly higher than in Beijing (35.0%). A total of 34.5% of all the isolates were susceptible to all eight of these antimicrobial agents and 12.8% were multi-drug resistant. Ampicillin resistance increased over the duration of the study. These findings show that beta-lactamase production and ampicillin resistance among isolates from Chinese children with upper respiratory tract infection are increasing, and highlight the strong correlation between ampicillin resistance and resistance to cefaclor, chloramphenicol and tetracycline in H. influenzae isolates.

Abstract
The phase fluctuations of arbitrarily nonlinearity- and dispersion-managed solitons propagating in a noisy fiber channel are studied both analytically and numerically. We begin by discussing the stability problem of such linearly chirped solitons with a full linear stability analysis. It is shown that these sophisticated solitons possess an enhanced stability against perturbations and therefore hold promise for applications in optical telecommunications. We then make an approach to the phase statistics of these solitons, which stems from an inevitable random walk in phase evolutions due to amplified spontaneous emission noise. By using the variational approach together with impulse-response (Green) functions, an elegant closed-form expression for the phase variance is derived based on an unconstrained self-similar soliton ansatz in which the effect of chirp fluctuations has been critically taken into account as well as the dispersive and nonlinear effects. An inspection of the intriguing subtleties of the interplay among these effects reveals that the chirp fluctuations effect does play an important role in the control of nonlinear phase noise via fiber dispersion, independently of whether the input solitons are initially chirped or not. Our analytical result also offers many possibilities of optimally manipulating nonlinear phase noise with engineered fiber parameters that may lead to the steady pulse propagation, broadening, or compression under favorable parametric conditions. Last, we demonstrate our result by several convincible examples and show an excellent agreement between analytical predictions and numerical simulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcal superantigens (SsAgs) contribute to the persistence of allergic skin inflammation in atopic dermatitis (AD). The aims of this study were to (1) determine whether there are differences between AD patients and healthy subjects in SsAg-induced caspase-3 activation and SsAg-induced changes of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA levels of CD4+ T cells; (2) investigate the effect of interleukin (IL)-4 on SsAg-induced caspase-3 activation and SsAg-induced changes of Bcl-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA levels of CD4+ T cells. METHODS Using immunofluorescence staining followed by flow cytometric analysis and real-time PCR, we analyzed peripheral blood mononuclear cells with or without staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) stimulation in the presence or absence of recombinant IL-4 or anti-IL-4 neutralizing antibodies in 16 AD patients and 14 healthy subjects. RESULTS SEB-reactive (TCRVbeta3+, Vbeta12+, and Vbeta17+) CD4+ T cells from AD patients were more resistant to SEB-induced caspase-3 activation and SEB-induced decrease of Bcl-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA than those from healthy subjects. Exogenously added IL-4 inhibited SEB-induced caspase-3 activation and SEB-induced decrease of Bcl-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA in SEB-reactive CD4+ T cells from healthy subjects. Inhibition of endogenous IL-4 by using anti-IL-4 neutralizing antibodies up-regulated SEB-induced caspase-3 activation and SEB-induced decrease of Bcl-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA in SEB-reactive CD4+ T cells from AD patients. CONCLUSIONS Following SsAg stimulation, IL-4 produced by T cells in AD patients down-regulates SsAg-induced caspase-3 activation and apoptosis of CD4+ T cells through inhibiting the decrease of Bcl-2. This may impair deletion of SsAg-activated T cells and resolution of allergic skin inflammation.

Abstract
MOTIVATION Modern strategies for mapping disease loci require efficient genotyping of a large number of known polymorphic sites in the genome. The sensitive and high-throughput nature of hybridization-based DNA microarray technology provides an ideal platform for such an application by interrogating up to hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a single assay. Similar to the development of expression arrays, these genotyping arrays pose many data analytic challenges that are often platform specific. Affymetrix SNP arrays, e.g. use multiple sets of short oligonucleotide probes for each known SNP, and require effective statistical methods to combine these probe intensities in order to generate reliable and accurate genotype calls. RESULTS We developed an integrated multi-SNP, multi-array genotype calling algorithm for Affymetrix SNP arrays, MAMS, that combines single-array multi-SNP (SAMS) and multi-array, single-SNP (MASS) calls to improve the accuracy of genotype calls, without the need for training data or computation-intensive normalization procedures as in other multi-array methods. The algorithm uses resampling techniques and model-based clustering to derive single array based genotype calls, which are subsequently refined by competitive genotype calls based on (MASS) clustering. The resampling scheme caps computation for single-array analysis and hence is readily scalable, important in view of expanding numbers of SNPs per array. The MASS update is designed to improve calls for atypical SNPs, harboring allele-imbalanced binding affinities, that are difficult to genotype without information from other arrays. Using a publicly available data set of HapMap samples from Affymetrix, and independent calls by alternative genotyping methods from the HapMap project, we show that our approach performs competitively to existing methods. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prevalence of albuminuria and the risk factors associated with albuminuria were evaluated among the Chinese patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged over 30 in the Shanghai downtown. We also evaluated the variability of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) among the three measurements and the relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and albuminuria. METHODS The 1039 Chinese patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged over 30 were investigated by randomized cluster sampling in the Shanghai downtown and 1018 patients were analyzed in this study. Body mass measurements including height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference, resting blood pressure, fasting blood measures, urinary ACR and the digitally stored fundus images were investigated. The prevalence of albuminuria was calculated and the risk factors associated with albuminuria were evaluated by stepwise logistic regression. The concordance of urinary ACR was evaluated by observed agreement. The relationship between albuminuria and DR was also evaluated. RESULTS (1) The mean age of all patients was 66.10+/-11.54 years and the duration of diabetes was 7.89+/-7.16 years. (2) The prevalence of albuminuria was 49.6% among the Chinese patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged over 30 in the Shanghai downtown, 41.4% with microalbuminuria and 8.2% with macroalbuminuria. (3) Microalbuminuria was significantly associated with systolic blood pressure, gender and waist circumference. Macroalbuminuria was significantly associated with systolic blood pressure and duration of diabetes. (4) Observed agreement among the three urinary ACR measurement for albuminuria staging was 73.3% (first versus second), 64.5% (first versus third) and 77.5% (second versus third). Observed agreement in the albuminuria staging between the single urinary ACR measurement and all three urinary ACR measurements was 85.8% (first versus all three), 87.6% (second versus all three) and 81.9% (third versus all three). (5) The percentage of DR in the macroalbuminuric group (59.2%) was significantly higher than that in the normalbuminuria group (16.1%) and microalbuminuria group (24.6%). (6) The macroalbuminuric patients with DR had significantly increased fasting blood glucose and HbA1c compared with the macroalbuminuric patients without DR. CONCLUSION The prevalence of microalbuminuria observed in the Chinese patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged over 30 in the Shanghai downtown reached up to 41.4% though the observations in our study might be representative of the diabetic patients of the Shanghai downtown. We agreed that at least two of the three urinary collections were done in a 3- to 6-month period because of the day-to-day variability in albumin excretion. The percentage of DR among the patients with macroalbuminuria was 59.2%, and the macroalbuminuric patients with the significantly high plasma glucose and DR were prone to diagnose DN.

Abstract
One-dimensional (1D) zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical structures have been self-assembled on amorphous carbons using thermal chemical vapour transport and condensation. Three typical micro- and nanostructures consisting of micrometre-sized rods and nanometre-sized needles were observed. Growth mechanisms were established to elucidate the growth properties of 1D ZnO hierarchical structures.

Abstract
A chromosomal DNA fragment of 8992 bp in size that has not been previously identified in Streptococcus agalactiae, was cloned and sequenced from strain 98-D60C. In particular, this 8992-bp fragment contained genes homologous to the sensor histidine kinase gene and the DNA-binding response-regulator gene of Streptococcus pneumoniae, and S. agalactiae bac gene. Structural and genetic features of the 8992-bp fragment were highly similar to those specific for bacterial pathogenicity islands. Analysis of epidemiologically unrelated S. agalactiae strains revealed that this fragment was present only in bac gene-positive strains. The possible origin of the 8992-bp fragment in S. agalactiae and its significance for molecular mechanisms of "bacteria-host" interactions are discussed.

Abstract
SnO(2)/Sn nanocables have been grown on single-crystal Si substrates by metal catalyst assisted thermal evaporation of SnO powders. The morphologies and structures of the prepared nanocables were determined on the basis of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra analyses. The microstructures and compositions of the top and bottom regions of the SnO(2)/Sn nanocables were identified by HRTEM in detail, which revealed some basic physical and chemical processes involved in the formation of the nanocables. A growth model was proposed to address the formation of SnO(2)/Sn nanocables on the basis of the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) process.

Abstract
Dynamical phenomena of moving vortices and voltage noise spectra are studied in disordered Josephson junction arrays (JJAs). The plastic motion of vortices, smectic flow, and moving Bragg glass phases are separated by two dynamic melting transitions driven by current. From the voltage noise spectra of moving vortices, it is found that the driving current plays an important role in the melting of pinning vortices glass and ordering of moving vortices. The features of noise spectra obtained in the disordered JJA model have been observed recently in the high-temperature superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(y) near the first-order melting transition, indicating that both of them are related to each other.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide more information about the morphological characteristics of the craniofacial complex in mandibular prognathism. Forty young adult males having mandibular prognathism were compared with 40 having normal occlusion. This was conducted to carry out geometric morphometric assessments to localize alterations, using Procrustes analysis and thin-plate spline analysis, in addition to conventional cephalometric techniques. Procrustes analysis indicated that the mean craniofacial, midfacial and mandibular morphology was significantly different in prognathic subjects compared with normal controls. This finding was corroborated by the multivariate Hotelling T(2)-test of cephalometric variables. Mandibular prognathism demonstrated a shorter and slightly retropositioned maxilla, a greater total length and anterior positioning of the mandible. Thin-plate spline analysis revealed a developmental diminution of the palatomaxillary region anteroposteriorly and a developmental elongation of the mandible anteroposteriorly, leading to the appearance of a prognathic mandibular profile. In conclusion, thin-plate spline analysis seems to provide a valuable supplement for conventional cephalometric analysis because the complex patterns of craniofacial shape change are visualized suggestive by means of grid deformations.

Abstract
Hyperglycemic response of freshwater giant prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, under acute cold shock was investigated, and the involvement and stimulatory pathways of norepinephrine (NE) on induced-glycemia were further examined. Remarkable elevations in hemolymph glucose at comparable magnitude were observed in both intact and eyestalkless prawn under cold treatments, suggesting that hyperglycemic response of this species is not solely mediated through the actions of crustacean hyperglycemic hormone released from X-organ sinus gland complex on the target tissues, but NE is involved. Positive and significant correlations were noted between the hemolymph glucose titers and NE contents in both thoracic ganglia and the hemolymph, suggesting that NE plays a significant role in the hyperglycemic responses of this species under cold. Depressive effects of various adrenoceptor antagonists monitored in vivo and in vitro further suggest that the action of NE is primarily mediated through both alpha1- and beta1-adrenoceptors.

Abstract
A full-length zebrafish (Danio rerio) cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2K6 cDNA, was obtained (GenBank accession No. AF283813) through polymerase chain reaction cloning using degenerated primers based on a consensus CYP2 sequence and the heme-binding domain. This first CYP2K family member cloned from zebrafish had 1861 bp which contained 27 bp of 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR), an open reading frame (ORF) of 1518 bp, and a 300 bp 3'-UTR with a poly A tail. The deduced 506 amino acid sequence of CYP2K6 had 63%, 62% and 59% identity with rainbow trout CYP2K1, CYP2K4 and CYP2K3, respectively; and 45%, 42%, and 42% identity with rabbit CYP2C1, human CYP2C19 and mouse CYP2C39, respectively. CYP2K6 mapped to 107.49cR on LG3 using the LN54 radiation hybrid panel. Its mRNA was detected at 5 days post-fertilization and in the adult liver and ovary among nine tissues examined. The ORF, including the 27 bp of the 5'-UTR, was cloned into pFastBac donor vector and then transferred into the baculovirus genome (bacmid DNA) in DH10Bac competent cells. The recombinant bacmid DNA was used to infect Spodoptera frugiperda insect cells to express the CYP2K6 protein (Bv-2K6). As its ortholog, rainbow trout Bv-2K1 [Yang, Y.H., Miranda, C.L., Henderson, M.C., Wang-Buhler, J.-L., Buhler, D.R., 2000. Heterologous expression of CYP2K1 and identification of the expressed protein (Bv-2K1) as lauric acid (omega-1)-hydroxylase and aflatoxin B1 exo-epoxidase. Drug Metab. Disp. 28,1279-83.], Bv-2K6 also catalyzed the conversion of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) to its exo-8,9-epoxide as assessed by the trapping of a glutathione (GSH) adduct in the presence of a specific mouse alpha class glutathione S-transferase. The identity of the AFB1-GSH adduct was verified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (MS-MS) analysis. Although rainbow trout Bv-2K1 was capable of oxidizing lauric acid, zebrafish Bv-2K6 protein showed no activity against this substrate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the ability of sera from children with active Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) to enhance endothelial interleukin (IL) 8 production and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression. METHODS Nine children with active HSP and nine normal healthy children were enrolled. IL8 serum levels of patients and controls at different stages were analysed. Production of IL8 and expression of ICAM-1 by human umbilical venous endothelial cells were detected (ELISA for IL8, flow cytometry for ICAM-1) and compared under various stimuli, including sera of patients at different stages, sera of controls, and medium alone. RESULTS Serum levels of IL8 were increased at the acute stage. Levels of IL8 in supernatants from human umbilical venous endothelial cells (HUVEC) co-cultured with sera from children with active HSP were significantly higher than those from HUVEC without any treatment (p = 0.001), HUVEC treated with inactive sera (p = 0.004), and HUVEC treated with sera from healthy controls (p = 0.004). Sera from patients and from controls did not enhance the expression of ICAM-1 on HUVEC. CONCLUSIONS Some factors may be present in sera from children with active HSP that could activate endothelial cells to produce IL8. This process may account, in part, for the mechanisms of perivascular neutrophil infiltration and leucocytosis in HSP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Amplification of the proto-oncogene c-erbB-2 (HER-2/neu) has been shown to be a prognostic marker in many kinds of cancer including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In order to obtain further information on the c-erbB-2 gene product p185, it is necessary to quantify expression levels. In this study we used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the extracellular domain of p185 to determine whether a soluble oncoprotein fragment can be detected in the serum of OSCC patients. METHOD Sera from 84 OSCC patients, 51 breast cancer patients (as positive controls), and 15 healthy controls were assayed in an ELISA. To study c-erbB-2 overexpression in OSCC, and breast cancer tissue samples we used an immunohistochemical technique. RESULTS The mean serum value (ng/ml, mean/SD) for the normal controls was 8.46/1.29. We chose the 95% level of normal controls as a cut-off to distinguish individuals with elevated levels. The breast cancer patients' and OSCC patients' serum values were 13.83/6.82 and 13.1/4.56, respectively. Significant differences (P < 0.0001) were observed between normal control and OSCC, normal control and the breast cancer group. Immunohistochemically detectable p185 (intermediate to high) was noted in 30 of 61 OSCC, and 24 of 51 breast cancer patients. There was a trend of association of serum oncoprotein fragment levels with tumor stages, but not with tumor sizes, nodal stages, metastases, and oral habits including betel quid chewing, alcohol drinking and smoking in the OSCC group. CONCLUSION The results of the present study raise the possibility that soluble c-erbB-2 protein levels in serum is a useful parameter for monitoring the disease status as well as the effect of therapy on patients with OSCC.

Abstract
A microbial consortium of Trichoderma reesei AS3.3711, Aspergillus niger 3.316 and Saccharomyces cerevisiaes AS2.399 was constructed to decomposed rice chaff on the basis of the characters of each microorganism and the mechanism of cellulases. In this experiment, rice chaff was pretreated before fermentation with NaOH so that the lignin structure of rice chaff was degraded and hemicellulose was dissolved partly, which remove the protection of lignin and hemicellulose on cellulose and demolish its special crystal structure. After pretreatment, rice chaff can be degraded more easily with the microbial consortium. The optimal technical paths and technological methods were achieved for intenerating rice chaff with the microbial consortium perfectly through orthogonal experiment. According to the technological methods, some experiments were done at 30 degrees C with pH 4.5. It was found that the highest filter paper enzyme activity (FPA) was 5.64 U/g and the ratio of cellulose degradation (RCD) was 28.05%.

Abstract
To have a clear insight into the diamond nucleation upon the hydrothermal synthesis and the reduction of carbide (HSRC), we performed the thermodynamic approach on the nanoscale to elucidate the diamond nucleation taking place in HSRC supercritical-fluid systems taking into account the capillary effect of the nanosized curvature of the diamond critical nuclei, based on the carbon thermodynamic equilibrium phase diagram. These theoretical analyses showed that the nanosize-induced interior pressure of diamond nuclei could drive the metastable phase region of the diamond nucleation in HSRC into the new stable phase region of diamond in the carbon phase diagram. Accordingly, the diamond nucleation is preferable to the graphite phase formation in the competing growth between diamond and graphite upon HSRC. Meanwhile, we predicted that 400 MPa should be the threshold pressure for the diamond synthesis by HSRC in the metastable phase region of diamond, based on the proposed thermodynamic nucleation on the nanoscale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The goal of the present study was to improve and simplify the diagnosis of Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) infection for routine clinical practice. METHODS A total of 71 clinical samples were tested by microbiologic culture, counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) and PCR described in the literature. Southern hybridization was accomplished with the Enzo(TM) "DNA Labeling and Detection Kit", Roche (Germany). The computer techniques were used for selection of the specific primers and for analysis of the sizes of PCR products. RESULTS The primers for the regions around the 51 bp deletion in C5a peptidase gene (scpB) of GBS were selected. PCR analysis revealed the 255 bp amplification fragment in GBS, 306 bp fragment in groups A and G streptococci (GAS, GGS) and did not reveal any fragments in other bacterial species. Among 71 urine and serum clinical samples tested, none were found to be GBS positive by microbiologic culture, 16 samples by CIE, 36 by PCR. The specificity of amplification was confirmed by Southern hybridization. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION The 51 bp deletion in scpB gene in comparison with scpA and scpG genes can be used as a diagnostic tool for identification of GBS. The 51 bp deletion based PCR proved to be faster and more reliable test than microbiologic culture or CIE.

Abstract
To clarify whether Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) share the same risk factors in Taiwan Chinese patients. Using the criteria of the NINCDS- ADRDA and NINDS-AIREN, 154 AD patients, 30 VaD patients, and 112 controls were enrolled. Their apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genes, extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes, were analyzed. The epsilon4 allele frequency was significantly higher in AD patients than in the control group. The odds ratio of carrying at least one copy of the epsilon4 allele in AD patients is 2.7 compared with control subjects. There was no significant difference between the VaD patients and the control subjects in their ApoE epsilon4 or epsilon2 allele frequency. The present study demonstrates a strong association between the ApoE epsilon4 allele and AD, but not between the ApoE epsilon4 allele and VaD. This suggests that AD and VaD do not share the same pathogenesis and deserve further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the dynamic changes in collagen type I and collagen type III in rabbits with schistosomiasis japonica and the treatment effect of gamma-interferon on the degradation of collagens in schistosomal hepatic fibrosis. METHODS Each rabbit was infected with 80 +/- 1 S. japonicum cercariae. Liver operations were done at different time points after infection and the liver specimens were embedded with paraffin and stained with alpha-SMA, HE and picric acid-Sirius red. The stained slides were observed under polarizing microscope and different collagen areas calculated by computer imagine analysis system. At the 16th week after infection, the infected rabbits received a single dose of praziquantel and gamma-interferon for 8 weeks. RESULTS The area percent of collagen type I at the 28th week after infection (40.14 +/- 17.00) increased about seven fold compared with the 8th week group (5.73 +/- 3.40). The area percent of collagen type III at the 28th week after infection (6.80 +/- 5.19) increased about six fold compared with the 8th week group (1.15 +/- 1.34). The alpha-SMA positive cells also increased significantly. After gamma-interferon treatment, the area percent of collagen type I and type III decreased significantly, from 18.51 +/- 7.52 and 4.63 +/- 3.64 (before treatment) to 3.09 +/- 1.54 and 0.40 +/- 0.37 (0 and 4 weeks after treatment) (P < 0.01). However, after the withdrawl of gamma-interferon treatment, the collagen degradation was reversible. CONCLUSION Gamma-interferon is effective in the treatment of hepatic fibrosis in rabbits infected with S. japonicum, the effect being reversible.

Abstract
The presence of insertion elements (IS) IS861 and IS1548 in the collection of 211 Streptococcus agalactiae strains isolated from pregnant women and dairy cows was assayed. IS861 was found in 67 human strains (59%) and 36 bovine strains (37%), IS1548 in 13 human strains (12%) and 16 bovine strains (16%). Two combinations, IS861+ IS1548- and IS861- IS1548-, were widely distributed in both human and bovine strains. The copy number and the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the two IS were determined in human group B streptococcus (GBS) strains. A minimum of 8 copies of IS1548 were detected in GBS strains while the copy number of IS861 varied from 1 to 9. The number of different hybridizing patterns with IS861 and IS1548 probes was 9 and 6, respectively. These hybridization patterns were divided into several clusters. All strains with IS were also clustered according to pulsed field-gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns. A correlation was found between the results of PFGE- and IS-based clustering.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A study on the nasopharyngeal carriage and antimicrobial susceptibility of Haemophilus influenza among children was conducted in Beijing Children's Hospital from April to May 2000. The study included 292 children between 1 and 60 mo of age with acute upper respiratory tract infection. Nasopharyngeal swabs from these patients were cultured, and 105 Haemophilus influenzae strains were isolated, 3 of which were type b. Antibiotic susceptibility of the strains was determined using disk diffusion and E-tests and the results compared with those of isolates from children with pneumonia in 1999. The carriage rate of Haemophilus influenzae was 36.0% (105/292). It was found that 4.8% and 1.0% of isolates were resistant to ampicillin and cefaclor, respectively, and 5.7%, 16.2% and 77.1% were resistant to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim, respectively. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, azithromycin, and clarithromycin were uniformly active to all strains. Compared with the data from 1999, there was a significant increase in resistance to tetracycline (from 12.7% in 1999 to 16.2%) and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim (from 40.5% in 1999 to 77.1%). CONCLUSION H. influenzae isolates from outpatients in Beijing Children's Hospital had low ampicillin resistance and were sensitive to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Sulphamethoxazole/ trimethoprim resistance rates increased rapidly compared with those in the 1999 data. Further surveillance investigations are important for the choice of empiric therapy of acute respiratory tract infection.

Abstract
We used sequence polymorphism of the mitochondrial DNA D-loop (968 bp excluding the tandem repeat region) to determine genetic diversity of horses inhabiting Cheju (a southern island of Korea). Seventeen haplotypes with frequencies from 1.5 to 21.5% were found among 65 Cheju horse samples. Genetic diversity (h) of the 17 haplotypes was calculated to be 0.91, indicating that the extant Cheju horse population consists of diverse genetic groups in their maternal lineage. Phylogenetic analysis showed that 17 types of Cheju (D-loop sequences determined), 5 Mongolian, 6 Arabian, 3 Belgian, 2 Tsushima, 2 Yunnan, 1 Przewalskii, and 3 Thoroughbred horses (published sequences for the latter seven breeds) showed that Cheju horses were distributed into many different clusters in the tree. Four Mongolian horses clustered with separate Cheju horse groups, showing that some Cheju horses are clearly of Mongolian origin. The analysis of partial sequences (284 bp) of the D-loop of 109 horses showed that Thoroughbred, Mongolian, Lipizzan, and Arabian breeds are as diverse as Cheju horses. Our data together with others suggest that most horse breeds tested with reasonably sufficient numbers of samples are diverse in their maternal lineages and also are not uniquely different from each other.

Abstract
A collection of 45 epidemiologically unrelated Streptococcus agalactiae strains (group B Streptococcus, GBS), belonging to different serotypes, isolated from pregnant women in China and Russia was studied. Strains were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) employing hybridization with nine genes potentially involved in virulence. Molecular sizes of GBS genomes varied from 2030 to 2290 kb. Location of the genes under study bac, bca, glnA, scpB, cyl, hylB, lmb, scaA and cfb on the GBS genomes was found to be conserved irrelevant to the serotype. Potential virulence genes scpB, hylB, lmb were located on a 91-kb SmaI fragment that is equal to 4.5% of total genome. Ribotyping of the strains under study revealed three different HindIII, nine EcoRI and 12 PvuII ribotypes among 45 strains. A strong correlation between the PvuII ribotype and the presence of the bac gene was observed, with 21 of 22 bac-positive strains belonging to the same PvuII ribotype P1. PFGE patterns of bac-positive strains were also similar. The possibility of close genetic relatedness of all bac-positive strains is discussed.

Abstract
Interleukin-18 (IL-18) has been found to have multiple effects upon various cells involved in inflammatory response. Recently we reported that B16 murine melanoma cells are able to produce IL-18, which is involved in the regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) and Fas-ligand expression, indicating that IL-18 plays key role in the tumor activity of melanoma. In this study, we investigated the pattern of IL-18 expression in the human system. IL-18 production was tested by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay in various tumor cell lines, including Raji (Burkitt's lymphoma), IM-9 (B lymphoblast), Jurkat (acute T cell leukemia), SK-MES-1 (squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell line), SK-MEL-2, G-361, DM-4, and DX-3 (melanoma cell lines). ELISA tests showed that IL-18 was highly expressed in malignant skin tumors such as SK-MES-1, SK-MEL-2, G-361, DM-4, and DX-3 cell lines, thus suggesting that IL-18 production may be associated with the malignancy of skin tumors. Here, we report that enhanced IL-18 expression is positively correlated with malignant skin tumors such as SCC and melanoma, suggesting the importance role of IL-18 in malignancy of skin tumors. Taken together, expression of IL-18 by tumor cells in human skin tissue may provide an important clue to understand the pathogenesis of malignant skin tumors.

Abstract
Neonatal lupus erythematosus is a rare disorder caused by transplacental autoantibodies from the mother to the fetus. This syndrome is characterized by congenital heart block and/or cutaneous lesion. A total of 10 cases of neonatal lupus erythematosus were diagnosed at the National Taiwan University Hospital from 1988 through 1998. The incidence of cardiac anomaly and other clinical features in patients with neonatal lupus erythemayosus in this study was compared with those in previous studies. Results showed that 50% of patients had congenital heart block and/or cutaneous lesion, which is compatible to previous statistics. However, the findings showed that 80% of the patients were female and 90% of the mothers had acquired an autoimmune disorder, which were much higher compared with that of other studies. To date, no definite treatment is suggested prenatally to prevent the occurrence of congenital heart block, but careful maternal screening and serial fetal echocardiogram are warranted.

Abstract
Lower respiratory tract infections (LRIs) during early childhood can lead to bronchial hyperreactivity or recurrent obstructive bronchitis. The role of LRIs in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases such as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic eczema, and bronchial asthma is less clear. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence of subsequent wheezing and atopy, and the known risk factors for allergic sensitization in 74 children hospitalized for acute LRIs of various etiologies from January 1994 through December 1994. Results showed that there are no differences in outcomes between patients with respiratory syncytial virus LRI, Chlamydia pneumoniae LRI, and LRIs caused by other agents. Although lower respiratory tract illnesses, especially those caused by respiratory syncytial virus during infancy, were associated with an increased risk of subsequent wheezing during early childhood, wheezing tended to disappear with increasing age in many children. This study also found recurrent episodes of wheezing during the first 5 years of life, and symptoms suggestive of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis were the only factors predictive of subsequent diagnosis of asthma for children who had LRIs during early childhood. In conclusion, this study suggests that prevention of recurrent wheezing LRIs and good control of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis is critical for preventing subsequent development of bronchial asthma.

Abstract
Microarrays are part of a new class of biotechnologies that allow the monitoring of expression levels for thousands of genes simultaneously. Image analysis is an important aspect of microarray experiments, one that can have a potentially large impact on subsequent analyses, such as clustering or the identification of differentially expressed genes. This paper reviews a number of existing image analysis methods used on cDNA microarray data. In particular, it describes and discusses the different segmentation and background adjustment methods. It was found that in some cases background adjustment can substantially reduce the precision--that is, increase the variability of low-intensity spot values. In contrast, the choice of segmentation procedure seems to have a smaller impact.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the localization and expression characteristics of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in rat skins at different development stages (embryonic, newborn, adult). METHODS Skins from embryonic, newborn and adult rats were taken, and detected by immunohistochemical technique. RESULTS Positive immunohistochemical signal of EGF could be found in skins from embryonic, newborn and adult rats, mainly in the cytoplasm of the epidermal cells, fibroblasts, hair follicle epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. With the increase in age, the expression amount of EGF was increased. The positive signal of bFGF could be found in skins of newborn and adult rats, while the signal of bFGF in skin of embryonic rats was negative. CONCLUSION The results indicate that endogenous EGF plays important role in epidermal development in embryonic stage and wound healing in adult after injury. The negative expression of bFGF in skin of embryonic rat indicate that the absence of bFGF may be one of the reasons for the non-scar healing in embryonic stage.
