Growing awareness of the disease has been accompanied by a growth in related resources. Much of the information is provided by those who have experienced breast cancer firsthand.

Hepatic origin of cholesteryl oleate in coronary artery atherosclerosis in African green monkeys. Enrichment by dietary monounsaturated fat

Relationships among plasma lipoprotein cholesterol, cholesterol secretion by the isolated, perfused liver, and coronary artery atherosclerosis were examined in African green monkeys fed diets containing cholesterol and 35% of calories as fat enriched in polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, or saturated fatty acids. The livers of animals fed monounsaturated fat had significantly higher cholesteryl ester concentrations (8.5 mg/g wet wt) than the livers of the other diet groups (3.65 and 3.37 mg/g wet wt for saturated and polyunsaturated fat groups, respectively) and this concentration was highly correlated with plasma cholesterol and apoB concentrations in each diet group. Cholesteryl oleate was 58 and 74. 5% of the liver cholesteryl ester in the saturated and monounsaturated fat groups. In each diet group, perfusate cholesteryl ester accumulation rate was highly correlated to liver and plasma cholesterol concentrations, and to plasma LDL cholesteryl ester content. Cholesteryl oleate was 48 and 67% of the cholesteryl esters that accumulated in perfusate in the saturated and monounsaturated fat animals, and this percentage was very highly correlated (r = -0.9) with plasma apoB concentration. Finally, in these two diet groups, liver perfusate cholesteryl ester accumulation rate was well correlated (r >/= 0.8) to coronary artery cholesteryl ester concentration, a measure of the extent of coronary artery atherosclerosis that occurred over the five years of diet induction in these animals. These data define an important role for the liver in the cholesteryl oleate enrichment of the plasma lipoproteins in the saturated and monounsaturated fat groups, and demonstrate strong relationships among hepatic cholesteryl ester concentration, cholesteryl ester secretion, and LDL particle cholesteryl ester content. The high correlation between liver cholesteryl ester secretion and coronary artery atherosclerosis provides the first direct demonstration of the high degree of importance of hepatic cholesteryl ester secretion in the development of this disease process. The remarkable degree of enrichment of cholesteryl oleate in plasma cholesteryl esters of the monounsaturated fat group may account for the relatively high amount of coronary artery atherosclerosis in this group.

Coping and problem solving of self-mutilators

People who self-mutilate have been hypothesized to have deficient skills in coping and problem-solving that leave them vulnerable to the adoption of self-mutilation as a coping strategy. This hypothesis was tested using male incarcerated self-mutilators with comparisons being made with non-multilating, prisoner, and non-prisoner control groups. Examination of the inherent resources which enable an individual to effectively cope with stress demonstrated a depressed score for self-mutilators on the scale measuring self-worth and optimism about life. Assessment of the strategies used to cope with real problems demonstrated that self-mutilators engage in more problem avoidance behaviors. Self-mutilators also recorded less perceived control over problem-solving options. The results are discussed in terms of the effectiveness of self-mutilation as a coping strategy and the need to adopt a multidimensional approach to the investigation of coping.

Polymerase chain reaction amplification of a measles virus sequence from human temporal bone sections with active otosclerosis

Investigation of a possible viral etiology for otosclerosis was initiated because of the clinical and histopathologic similarities between otosclerosis and Paget's disease of bone and the mounting evidence of a viral etiology in Paget's disease. Thus far, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies have revealed measles-like structures and antigens in active otosclerotic lesions. A method for isolation and identification of both DNA and RNA sequences in archival human temporal bone specimens using the polymerase chain reaction technique has been developed. With use of this technique, a 115-base pair sequence of the measles nucleocapsid gene has been identified in 8 of 11 different temporal bone specimens with histologic evidence of otosclerosis. Zero of nine control specimens without histologic evidence of otosclerosis were positive. The association between the presence of the measles nucleocapsid gene sequence and histologic otosclerosis was significant (p < 0.01). This study provides further evidence for a possible measles virus etiology in otosclerosis.

Elemental analysis of femoral bone from patients with fractured neck of femur or osteoarthrosis

The elemental composition of bone has been determined by inductively coupled atomic emission and mass spectrometry to test the hypothesis that changes in major or minor elemental concentrations may contribute to the risk of fracture. Femoral bone was obtained from patients at operation for the treatment of fracture and compared with that of patients with osteoarthrosis and a necropsy control group. The data suggest that there are no major differences in bone elemental composition in patients with fractures compared with the control group. Bone adjacent to joints with osteoarthrosis tends to be less mineralized (per unit trabecular bone volume) than control bone and bone from fracture patients, and has significantly lower concentrations of boron, lead and, zinc. These observations may reflect the more rapid turnover of bone close to the arthritic joint.

The psychopathology of incarcerated self-mutilators

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the symptomatology of severe psychopathology reported by male incarcerated self-multilators.

METHOD

Comparisons were made with a nonmutilating incarcerated group and a nonincarcerated, nonmutilator group.

RESULTS

A distinctive pattern of symptomatology emerged. Self-mutilators evidenced a wide range of elevated scores on general measures of psychological/psychiatric symptoms, particularly depression and hostility. Aspects of hostility that distinguished self-mutilators for other groups included the urge to act out hostile feelings, critical feelings towards others, paranoid feelings of hostility and guilt. Self-mutilators demonstrated substantial problems with substance abuse, particularly alcohol.

CONCLUSION

A pattern of passive-aggressive, schizoid and avoidant personality styles distinguished self-mutilators from other groups.
