Abstract
The environment being surrounded by accumulated durable waste organic compounds has become a critical crisis for human societies. Generally, organic effluents of industrial plants released into the water source and air are removed by some physical and chemical processes. Utilizing photocatalysts as cost-effective, accessible, thermally/mechanically stable, nontoxic, reusable, and powerful UV-absorber compounds creates a new gateway toward the removal of dissolved, suspended, and gaseous pollutants even in trace amounts. TiO2 and ZnO are two prevalent photocatalysts in the field of removing contaminants from wastewater and air. Structural modification of the photocatalysts with metals, nonmetals, metal ions, and other semiconductors reduces the band gap energy and agglomeration and increases the affinity toward organic compounds in the composite structures to expand their usability on an industrial scale. This increases the extent of light absorbance and improves the photocatalytic efficiency. Selecting a suitable synthesis method is necessary to prepare a target photocatalyst with distinct properties such as high specific surface area, numerous surface functional groups, and an appropriate crystalline phase. In this Review, significant parameters for the synthesis and modification of TiO2- and ZnO-based photocatalysts are discussed in detail. Several proposed mechanistic routes according to photocatalytic composite structures are provided. Some electrochemical analyses using charge carrier trapping agents and delayed recombination help to plot mechanistic routes according to the direction of photoexcited species (electron-hole pairs) and design more effective photocatalytic processes in terms of cost-effective photocatalysts, saving time and increasing productivity.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is recognized to be one of the most promising ways to address energy and environmental issues by utilizing visible light. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), with a moderate band gap (∼2.7 eV) has been the flashpoint in environmental photocatalysis as it can work better under visible light, can be synthesized by a facile synthesis process using low-cost materials, thermally and chemically stable. Still the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 is not satisfactory because of certain limitations such as insufficient visible light absorption capacity, low electron-hole separation efficiency, high recombination rate, poor surface area. Introduction of doping, band structure engineering, defecting and designing of heterojunction, composites etc. were investigated to amplify its applications. Among all these modifications, elemental doping is a suitable and successful alternative for the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity by changing the optical and electronic properties. This review emphasizes on advancement and trends of elemental doping and its application on photocatalytic organic pollutant remediation in aqueous medium. The fundamental photocatalytic activity of heterogeneous photocatalysis and specifically g-C3N4-based photocatalysis have been discussed. The benfits of non-metal doping, enhanced photocatalytic performance by doping element, mechanism invloved in doping, advantages of co-doping has been explained. Mono, bi, and tri non-metal doped g-C3N4 and their application for the removal of organic pollutants from water medium by visible light photocatalysis has been summerized. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of photocatalytic system has been highlighted. Future research should focus on the large-scale application of the photocatalysis process considering the economic aspects. A rigorous life cycle assessment for deploying the non-metal doped g-C3N4-based photocatalysis technology for successful commercial application is recommended.

Abstract
In this study, S-doped graphitic carbon nitride (S-C3N4) was prepared using the high-temperature polymerization method, and then S-C3N4/AgCdS heterojunction photocatalyst was obtained using the chemical deposition method through loading Ag-doped CdS nanoparticles (AgCdS NPs) on the surface of S-C3N4. Experimental results show that the AgCdS NPs were evenly dispersed on the surface of S-C3N4, indicating that a good heterojunction structure was formed. Compared to S-C3N4, CdS, AgCdS and S-C3N4/CdS, the photocatalytic performance of S-C3N4/AgCdS has been significantly improved, and exhibits excellent photocatalytic degradation performance of Rhodamine B and methyl orange. The doping of Ag in collaboration with the construction of a Z-scheme heterojunction system promoted the effective separation and transport of the photogenerated carriers in S-C3N4/AgCdS, significantly accelerated its photocatalytic reaction process, and thus improved its photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
This study explores the limitations of TiO2 as a photocatalyst, focusing on its narrow bandwidth and high electron-hole complexation probabilities that restrict its applications. A novel one-pot synthesis method for TiO2/hydrochar matrix composites is presented, with variations achieved through control of hydrothermal temperature, time, and loading concentration. The efficacy of these composites in ammonia removal is investigated, revealing optimal performance for the composite denoted as 3Ti-160-7, synthesized with a titanium salt concentration of 0.3 mol L-1, a hydrothermal temperature of 160 °C, and a hydrothermal time of 7 hours. Comparative analyses with commercial TiO2 (P25) and hydrochar demonstrate superior performance of 3Ti-160-7, exhibiting significantly lower ammonia concentration and reduced NO and NO2 concentrations. This research underscores the cost-effectiveness and application potential of TiO2/hydrochar matrix composites, offering valuable insights for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity and broader applicability in addressing TiO2-related challenges.

Abstract
Gadolinium hydroxide (Gd(OH)3) was synthesized via a microwave-assisted synthesis method. Nickel ion (Ni2+) was doped into Gd(OH)3, in which 4-12% Ni-Gd(OH)3 was synthesized, to study the effect of doping. The structural, optical, and morphological properties of the synthesized materials were analyzed. The crystallite sizes of the hexagonal structure of Gd(OH)3 and Ni-Gd(OH)3, which were 17-30 nm, were obtained from x-ray diffraction analysis. The vibrational modes of Gd(OH)3 and Ni-Gd(OH)3 were confirmed using Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies. The band gap energy was greatly influenced by Ni-doping, in which a reduction of the band gap energy from 5.00 to 3.03 eV was observed. Transmission electron microscopy images showed nanorods of Gd(OH)3 and Ni-Gd(OH)3 and the particle size increased upon doping with Ni2+. Photocatalytic degradations of brilliant green (BG) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) under UV light irradiation were carried out. In both experiments, 12% Ni-Gd(OH)3 showed the highest photocatalytic response in degrading BG and 4-NP, which is about 92% and 69%, respectively. Therefore, this study shows that Ni-Gd(OH)3 has the potential to degrade organic pollutants.

Abstract
Elaborating the specific reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the photocatalytic degradation of atrazine (ATZ) is of great significance for elucidating the underlying mechanism. This study provided conclusive evidence that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the primary ROS responsible for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of ATZ, thereby questioning the reliability of widely adopted radical quenching techniques in discerning authentic ROS species. As an illustration, oxygen-modified g-C3N4 (OCN) was prepared to counteract the limitations of pristine g-C3N4 (CN). Comparative assessments between CN and OCN revealed a remarkable 10.44-fold improvement in the photocatalytic degradation of ATZ by OCN. This enhancement was ascribed to the increased content of C-O functional groups on the surface of the OCN, which facilitated the conversion of superoxide radicals (·O2-) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), subsequently leading to the generation of ·OH. The increased production of ·OH contributed to the efficient dealkylation, dechlorination, and hydroxylation of ATZ. Furthermore, toxicity assessments revealed a significant reduction in ATZ toxicity following its photocatalytic degradation by OCN. This study sheds light on the intricate interconversion of ROS and offers valuable mechanistic insights into the photocatalytic degradation of ATZ.

Abstract
Since quinolone is a kind of synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs, with the widespread use of this class of antibiotics, the risk and harm to human health have been attendant to the sewage containing quinolones which are discharged into the environment. Photocatalysis is considered as a promising technology for antibiotic degradation for its strong redox properties and reaction rate. As a metal oxidizing substance, Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is such a popular and hot material for the degradation of organic pollutants recently due to its good photocatalytic activity and chemical stability. Numerous studies have confirmed that BiVO4 composites can overcome the shortcomings of pure BiVO4 and cleave the main structure of quinolone under photocatalytic conditions. This paper mainly outlines the research progress on the preparation of BiVO4 composites and the degradation of quinolone antibiotics from the perspective of improving the catalysis and degrading the efficiency mechanism of BiVO4 composites.

TiO2-based photocatalyst has been widely studied as an effective and sustainable water environment remediation material. In this study, we analyzed the status and research trends of TiO2-based photocatalytic degradation of wastewater in depression from 2003 to 2023 to provide a reference for further research. "Doping", "Modification" and "Heterojunction" were used as keywords, and 817 related academic literatures were screened out by using Web of Science database. Through the visualization software VOSviewer and CiteSpace, the authors, institutions and literature keywords were clustered. The results show that since 2008, the annual number of published papers on TiO2-based photocatalytic degradation of wastewater has increased from 9 to 114. Among them, China has published 432 articles and made great contributions, and there are many representative research teams. Chinese universities are the main body to study TiO2-based photocatalytic degradation of wastewater, but the cooperation between universities is not as close as that abroad. This paper comprehensively analyzes the research hotspots of TiO2-based photocatalytic degradation of wastewater, such as the doping of TiO2 and the construction of different types of heterojunctions of TiO2. It is expected that these analysis results will provide new research ideas for researchers to carry out future research on related topics and let researchers know in-depth research institutions and possible collaborators to conduct academic exchanges and discussions with active institutions.

Abstract
Hydrogen production, catalytic organic synthesis, carbon dioxide reduction, environmental purification, and other major fields have all adopted photocatalytic technologies due to their eco-friendliness, ease of use, and reliance on sunlight as the driving force. Photocatalyst is the key component of photocatalytic technology. Thus, it is of utmost importance to produce highly efficient, stable, visible-light-responsive photocatalysts. CIS stands out among other visible-light-response photocatalysts for its advantageous combination of easy synthesis, non-toxicity, high stability, and suitable band structure. In this study, we took a brief glance at the synthesis techniques for CIS after providing a quick introduction to the fundamental semiconductor features, including the crystal and band structures of CIS. Then, we discussed the ways doping, heterojunction creation, p-n heterojunction, type-II heterojunction, and Z-scheme may be used to modify CIS's performance. Subsequently, the applications of CIS towards pollutant degradation, CO2 reduction, water splitting, and other toxic pollutants remediation are reviewed in detail. Finally, several remaining problems with CIS-based photocatalysts are highlighted, along with future potential for constructing more superior photocatalysts.

Abstract
TiNb2 O7 , as a promising alternative of Li4 Ti5 O12 , exhibits giant potential as low-temperature anode due to its higher theoretical capacity and comparable structural stability. However, the sluggish electronic conductivity still remains a challenge. Herein, bulk modification of Cu+ doping in porous TiNb2 O7 microsphere is proposed via a simple one-step solvothermal method with subsequent calcination treatment. The results show that the electronic conductivity is improved effectively due to the reduced band gap after doping, while enhanced lithium-ion diffusion is achieved benefiting from the increased interplanar spacing. Therefore, the optimal sample of Cu0.06 Ti0.94 Nb2 O7 exhibits a high reversible capacity of 244.4 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, superior rate capability, and long-term cycling stability at 1000 mA g-1 at room temperature. Particularly, it can also display good performance in a wide temperature range from 25 to -30 °C, including a reversible capacity of 76.6 mA h g-1 at -20 °C after 200 cycles at 200 mA g-1 . Moreover, Cu0.06 Ti0.94 Nb2 O7 //LiFePO4 full cell can deliver a high reversible capacity of 177.5 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 . The excellent electrochemical properties at both ambient and low-temperatures demonstrate the great potential of Cu+ -doped TiNb2 O7 in energy-storage applications.

Abstract
To solve low mass transfer in photocatalytic technology for water treatment, the combination of photoactive nanoparticles with highly adsorptive materials has been regarded as a successful approach. The optimization of photoactive particle coating in terms of dispersion on the surface of adsorbing support is the main key to reach a maximum synergism for pollutants removal. This study discusses the coating of as-prepared biomass based activated carbon by g-C3N4 using three routes, namely ball milling (AC-CN@BM), physical stirring (AC-CN@Phy) and ultrasonic assisted coating (AC-CN@US). The coating mechanisms by different processes were discussed using different characterization techniques. Ball milling based coating provides good g-C3N4 dispersion on the surface of AC, however, a partial degradation of g-C3N4 structure and a lower surface area were confirmed by FTIR, XRD and BET analysis. Physically designed sample shows a significant agglomeration of particles on the surface of AC. However, ultrasonic coating provides excellent distribution of g-C3N4 and high surface of the composite. In terms of photoactivity, AC-CN@BM exhibits the lowest adsorption and photocatalytic activity under solar light for the removal of ciprofloxacin. AC-CN@Phy showed medium performance, but less physical stability of g-C3N4 particles on AC, leading to their partial release. AC-CN@US showed the highest efficiency and stability after using; suggesting the good combination between g-C3N4 and AC, which in turn maximizes the removal of ciprofloxacin via Adsorb & shuttle process. The overall costs of composite, including the starting elements and the coating ultrasonic process are relatively low and green as compared to commonly reported routes.

Abstract
Photocatalytic glass-ceramics doped with metallic Ag, semiconductor AgBr, and hybrid metal-semiconductor Ag-AgBr nanostructures were synthesized via low-temperature Na+-Ag+ ion exchange. The spectral features of the nanostructures in the silicate glass matrix as well as their photocatalytic performance were studied in detail. Glass-ceramics containing hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructures were shown to possess one order of magnitude higher photocatalytic activity compared to their counterparts with metallic and semiconductor nanostructures. Hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructures allow enhancement of the net density of photogenerated hot electrons.

Abstract
TiO2/BiOI/CA electrodes with improved conductivity, reduced photoelectron-hole recombination rates, and increased reaction sites based on p-n type heterojunctions were constructed on carbon aerogels (CA) as photoelectrode substrates. Characterization based on ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photocurrent measurements, and impedance analysis showed that the TiO2/BiOI/CA photoelectrode with a Ti/Bi mole ratio of 0.4 exhibited the best visible light absorption, lowest photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination rate, and strongest photocatalytic degradation, with 90.4% degradation of phenol under 120 min of light. Moreover, the stability of this electrode remained at a high level. This was mainly because the energy levels of TiO2 and BiOI matched each other and the p-n heterojunction formed adjusted the energy band structure of the composite material, widened the electron transfer path, formed an internal electric field between the phase interfaces, had a higher electron transfer rate, and reduced the photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate. Since ˙OH and ˙O2- are the main active substances in the degradation of phenol, the TiO2/BiOI/CA photoelectrodes had higher degradation efficiency than BiOI/CA electrodes. This study provides a unique concept for the treatment of organic pollutant wastewater and electrode design for photoelectrocatalysis.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide nanotube (TNT) is one of the most widely used photocatalysts. In this research, TNT was prepared by a facile method using ilmenite (FeTiO3) concentrate as the titanium source. For this purpose, iron was leached out from ilmenite using HCl in assistance with the iron powder as the reducing agent to produce pure TiO2, where consequently, TNT was produced through hydrothermal treatment of the prepared TiO2 in an alkaline solution. CuS quantum dots, using the L-cysteine as a linker, were coated on the TNT to improve TNTs' photocatalytic properties. Characterization was done using XRD, SEM, FESEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, nitrogen sorption, and band gap measurement. The results revealed the formation of TNT with a star-shaped macrostructure as well as, a good dispersion of uniform CuS quantum dots with an average diameter of a few nanometers on the TiO2 structure. A dye adsorption kinetics study of the TNT and CuS-dopped TNT showed that TNT carries a higher adsorption capacity compared to the CuS-dopped TNT, developed due to its higher surface area and pore volume. Next, the photocatalytic performance (under visible light) of the prepared composite was studied over the methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) dyes, after the determination of the dye adsorption equilibrium point (where the adsorption stops). TNT showed almost no dye degradation while the prepared composite degraded almost 95 % of the dyes as the result of the reduced band gap from 3.21 to 2.67 eV. In this study, for the first time, the TNT was prepared using a mineral source and ilmenite, enhanced in photocatalytic properties, and presented a successful application.

Abstract
The demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable resource utilization techniques for recycling waste printed circuit boards is significant due to their status as valuable secondary resources, containing high-purity copper and precious metals. In this context, Cu(OH)2/CuO and CuO nanostructures were fabricated using alkaline precipitation and low-temperature aging methods using the strip solution originated from laboratory-scale spent mobile phone printed circuit board recovery process. XRD, FTIR, FESEM-EDX, and TEM were utilized to characterize the as-recovered nanoproducts. A hybrid structure of Cu(OH)2/CuO was formed at 70°, and monoclinic CuO phase was formed at 80 °C aging time. The results show that Cu(OH)2/CuO nanoflakes have an average crystallite size of 24.06 nm and a particle width of 22 ± 3 nm. Cu(OH)2/CuO nanoflakes formed at 70 °C aging temperature and 24-h residence time have finer crystallite and particle sizes than CuO-ridged nanospheres formed at 80 °C aging temperature. The optical band gap energy of Cu(OH)2/CuO and CuO nanostructures formed was found to be 2.28 eV and 2.22 eV, respectively. The hybrid Cu(OH)2/CuO nanostructure photocatalyzed the decomposed 97.28% rhodamine blue using a visible light source, whereas the CuO nanostructure degraded only 14.64% rhodamine blue dye under similar conditions. A surfactant-less hybrid structure is developed without the use of any chemical precursor. Thus, a high value-added product is produced using one waste material to remove another waste in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
This work reports an environmentally friendly and economically feasible green synthesis of monometallic oxides (SnO2 and WO3) and their corresponding mixed metal oxide (SnO2/WO3-x) nanostructures from the aqueous Psidium guajava leaf extract for light-driven catalytic degradation of a major industrial contaminant, methylene blue (MB). P. guajava is a rich source of polyphenols that acts as a bio-reductant as well as a capping agent in the synthesis of nanostructures. The chemical composition and redox behavior of the green extract were investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Results acquired by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm the successful formation of crystalline monometallic oxides (SnO2 and WO3) and bimetallic SnO2/WO3-x hetero-nanostructures capped with polyphenols. The structural and morphological aspects of the synthesized nanostructures were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Photocatalytic activity of the synthesized monometallic and hetero-nanostructures was investigated for the degradation of MB dye under UV light irradiation. Results indicate a higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency for mixed metal oxide nanostructures (93.5%) as compared to pristine monometallic oxides SnO2 (35.7%) and WO3 (74.5%). The hetero-metal oxide nanostructures prove to be better photocatalysts with reusability up to 3 cycles without any loss in degradation efficiency or stability. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is attributed to a synergistic effect in the hetero-nanostructures, efficient charge transportation, extended light absorption, and increased adsorption of dye due to the enlarged specific surface area.

Abstract
Heterojunction engineering in catalyst structures is a promising approach for solving the main restriction of the narrow photoabsorption range and quick recombination of photogenerated charge carriers in the photocatalysts. Herein, a simple, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and novel Z-scheme heterojunction of nanoflower-like NiS/BiOI was systematically designed using the low-temperature solvothermal and precipitation methods. The physicochemical and photo-electrochemical properties of the as-synthesized nanomaterials were characterized using XRD, FESEM, FT-IR, XPS, BET, UV-vis, PL, and EIS. NiS/BiOI nanomaterials exhibited a wide photoabsorption range (200-1000 nm), a narrow bandgap energy (1.76 eV), a large surface area (35.82 m2 g-1), and a low charge carrier recombination rate because of the synergistic effects of the NiS and BiOI photocatalysts, which could be the basis for superior photocatalytic efficiency. Particularly, the optimal 40% NiS/BiOI nanocomposite exhibited better stability and efficiency than the pure NiS and BiOI. The maximum degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) was 99.8% after 200 min, tetracycline (TC) was 96.3% after 140 min, and the photoreduction of Cr(VI) was 92.8% after 180 min rather than the pure NiS and BiOI under visible light irradiation. The constant rate (k) of RhB was approximately 10 and 4, TC was 12 and 4, and Cr(VI) was 10 and 8 times that of pristine NiS and BiOI, respectively. Radical trapping experiments and Tauc plot analysis proposed the design of the plausible Z-scheme reaction mechanism between NiS and BiOI, which has a crucial role in the rate of transportation and separation of electron/hole pairs. This investigation provides a venue for the design of a photoactive NiS-based nanocomposite for environmental remediation.

Abstract
The removal of four Contaminants of Emerging Concern, namely bisphenol A, sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac and benzotriazole; two odorous compounds, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, frequently detected in recirculating aquaculture systems; and Hg(II) was investigated using ZnO-based materials doped or co-doped with Ce and Cu under simulated solar radiation. Photocatalysts were synthetized via a hydrothermal route and their efficiency was assessed by changing some operational parameters in different water matrices of increasing complexity. The mixture of contaminants was successfully degraded in just 1 h, while the complete mineralization was achieved in a few hours; experiments performed in an actual aquaculture water confirmed the efficiency and broad versatility of the synthesized materials.

Abstract
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment have garnered a lot of attention during the past few years. Due to their toxic behavior, which interferes with endocrine functions in both humans and aquatic species, these types of compounds have been recognized as major polluting agents in wastewater effluents. Therefore, the development of efficient and sustainable removal methods for these emerging contaminants is essential. Photocatalytic removal of emerging contaminants using silver carbonate (Ag2CO3)-based photocatalyst is a promising process due to the unique characteristics of this catalyst, such as absorption of a larger fraction of the solar spectrum, wide band gap, non-toxicity, and low cost. The photocatalytic performance of Ag2CO3 has recently been improved through the doping of elements and optimization variation of operational parameters resulting in decreasing the rate of electron–hole pair recombination and an increase in the semiconductor’s excitation state efficiency, which enables the degradation of contaminants under UV or visible light exposure. This review summarized some of the relevant investigations related to Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials for EDC removal from water. The inclusion of Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials in the water recovery procedure suggests that the creation of a cutting-edge protocol is essential for successfully eliminating EDCs from the ecosystem.

Abstract
Formulation of heterojunction with remarkable high efficiency by utilizing solar light is promising to synchronously overcome energy and environmental crises. In this concern, hexagonal-borocarbonitride (h-BCN) based Z-schemes have proved potential candidates due to their spatially separated oxidation and reduction sites, robust light-harvesting ability, high charge pair migration and separation, and strong redox ability. H-BCN has emerged as a hotspot in the research field as a metal-free photocatalyst with a tunable bandgap range of 0-5.5 eV. The BCN photocatalyst displayed synergistic benefits of both graphene and boron nitride. Herein, the review demonstrates the current state-of-the-art in the Z-scheme photocatalytic application with a special emphasis on the predominant features of their photoactivity. Initially, fundamental aspects and various synthesis techniques are discussed, including thermal polymerization, template-assisted, and template-free methods. Afterward, the reaction mechanism of direct Z-scheme photocatalysts and indirect Z-scheme (all-solid-state) are highlighted. Moreover, the emerging Step-scheme (S-scheme) systems are briefly deliberated to understand the charge transfer pathway mechanism with an induced internal electric field. This review critically aims to comprehensively summarize the photo-redox applications of various h-BCN-based heterojunction photocatalysts including CO2 photoreduction, H2 evolution, and pollutants degradation. Finally, some challenges and future direction of h-BCN-based Z-scheme photocatalyst in environmental remediation are also proposed.

Abstract
A series of monometallic and bimetallic cocatalyst(s), comprising FeO x , CuO x , CoO x , FeO x -CuO x , and FeO x -CoO x loaded TiO2 catalysts prepared by the surface impregnation method, were investigated for the photocatalytic mineralization of the widely used four herbicides: 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T). It was found that FeO x -CoO x /TiO2 showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency toward mineralization of selected herbicides. FeO x -CoO x /TiO2 achieves 92% TOC removal in 180 min, representing nearly three time activity of the benchmark PC50 TiO2. From XPS analysis, FeOOH, CuO, and CoO were determined to be loaded onto the TiO2 surface. The outstanding photocatalytic performance of the optimized FeO x -CoO x /TiO2 sample for herbicides mineralization is due to an increased charge separation and enhanced hydroxyl radicals production monitored by diverse spectroscopies. Based on the proposed charge transfer mechanism, FeO x -CoO x cocatalyst species accelerate the transfer of photogenerated holes on TiO2, thus facilitating hydroxyl radicals production.

Abstract
Pure (TiO2) and 0.1 nominal atomic percent of palladium-modified TiO2 (Pd-TiO2) films were synthesized via a sol-gel method and compared through their physicochemical properties and photocatalytic activity in the degradation of an emerging contaminant, 17-α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). The activity of the films was studied using a continuous flow, planar microreactor under simulated sunlight. Catalysts characterization included X-ray diffraction, UV-Visible diffuse reflectance and transmittance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, N2 physisorption analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The modification of TiO2 with palladium confined the size of anatase phase crystallites, increased the specific surface area and improved radiation absorption. PdO domains on TiO2 were observed. In all the tested conditions, higher conversion of EE2 was achieved with the Pd-TiO2 film compared with the TiO2 film, presenting an 80% increase in the reaction rate. The performance of the catalytic films was also assessed by the calculation of two efficiency parameters: radiation absorption efficiency and quantum efficiency of reaction. The Pd-TiO2 film showed a notable enhancement of the absorption of the incident radiation and a more efficient utilization of the absorbed photons to degrade the target pollutant.

Abstract
TiO2 is a catalyst that can effectively degrade organic pollutants with the following advantages, low cost, simplicity, and pollution-free nature. In recent years, the non-noble plasmonic metal Al has effectively improved the photocatalytic performance of TiO2. However, the current reports are limited to the photocatalytic performance of Al/TiO2 on the substrate, which requires expensive large-scale vacuum equipment. In this study, monodispersed Al particles were proposed to enhance the photocatalysis of TiO2. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Al is proven by finite difference time domain method (FDTF) simulation. Then, Al/TiO2 composites were prepared by combining monodispersed Al and TiO2. The influence of ligand (glutathione (GSH), glutamic acid (GAG), or 3-mercaptopropane acid (MPA)), Al size (40 to 300 nm), and the ratio of Al to TiO2 (0.5:1 to 10:1) on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) by Al/TiO2 were discussed. The obtained results showed that the Al/TiO2 composite which were prepared with 200 nm Al particles, GSH as the ligand bridge, and an Al:TiO2 ratio of 1:1 had the best MB degradation effect. It can degrade 97.7% of 10 mg/L MB in 100 min. The reaction rate of the Al/TiO2 composite with the optimal photocatalytic performance is k=3.36×10-2 min-1, which is 10 times that of P25 TiO2. In addition, Al/TiO2 has a good photocatalytic effect on rhodamine B (RhB) and crystal violet (CV). Therefore, Al/TiO2 composites with the advantage of high efficiency are a type of potential photocatalytic material that can be used for the photocatalytic treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Abstract
Intercalation-type metal oxides are promising active anode materials for the fabrication of safer rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, as they are capable of minimizing or even eliminating Li plating at low voltages. Due to the excellent cycle performance, high specific capacity and appropriate working potential, TiNb2O7 (TNO) is considered to be the candidate of anode materials. Despite a lot of beneficial characteristics, the slow electrochemical kinetics of the TNO-based anodes limits their wide use. In this paper, TiNb2O7@C was prepared by using the self-polymerization coating characteristics of dopamine to enhance the rate-performance and cycling stability. The TNO@C-2 particles present ideal rate performance with the discharge capacity of 295.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C. Moreover, the TNO@C-2 anode materials exhibit initial discharge capacity of 177.4 mA h g-1, providing 91% of capacity retention after 400 cycles at 10 C. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be contributed to the carbon layer, which builds fast lithium ion paths, enhancing the electrical conductivity of TNO. All these results confirm that TNO@C is a valid methodology to enhance rate-performance and cycling stability and is a new way to provide reliable and quickly rechargeable energy storage resources.

Abstract
Biomass-derived cellulose hybrid composite materials are promising for application in the field of photocatalysis due to their excellent properties. The excellent properties between biomass-derived cellulose and photocatalyst materials was induced by biocompatibility and high hydrophilicity of the cellulose components. Biomass-derived cellulose exhibited huge amount of electron-rich hydroxyl group which could promote superior interaction with the photocatalyst. Hence, the original sources and types of cellulose, synthesizing methods, and fabrication cellulose composites together with applications are reviewed in this paper. Different types of biomasses such as biochar, activated carbon (AC), cellulose, chitosan, and chitin were discussed. Cellulose is categorized as plant cellulose, bacterial cellulose, algae cellulose, and tunicate cellulose. The extraction and purification steps of cellulose were explained in detail. Next, the common photocatalyst nanomaterials including titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), and graphene, were introduced based on their distinct structures, advantages, and limitations in water treatment applications. The synthesizing method of TiO2-based photocatalyst includes hydrothermal synthesis, sol-gel synthesis, and chemical vapor deposition synthesis. Different synthesizing methods contribute toward different TiO2 forms in terms of structural phases and surface morphology. The fabrication and performance of cellulose composite catalysts give readers a better understanding of the incorporation of cellulose in the development of sustainable and robust photocatalysts. The modifications including metal doping, non-metal doping, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) showed improvements on the degradation performance of cellulose composite catalysts. The information and evidence on the fabrication techniques of biomass-derived cellulose hybrid photocatalyst and its recent application in the field of water treatment were reviewed thoroughly in this review paper.

Abstract
Bisphenol A, bisphenol S, and fluconazole are environmental contaminants widely found in surface waters because of their extensive usage and low biodegradability. Therefore, other methods are often considered for the removal of these compounds. The present study aims at their photodegradation with the use of UV light and three different catalysts, ZnO, TiO2, and Ag-TiO2. The results obtained show that photocatalytic removal of these compounds is also problematic and the use of catalysts, such as ZnO and TiO2, at increasing concentrations mostly leads to lower degradation of the tested compounds. The modification of TiO2 with silver increases the degradation of both bisphenols up to 100%, which was achieved in 60 min by bisphenol A and in as little as 10 min by bisphenol S. Nevertheless, the degradation of fluconazole remained at the same level, not exceeding 70% in 60 min, i.e., still much lower than expected. In addition, the degradation products of bisphenols show the hydroxylation and destruction of their phenolic rings, while no degradation products were found during the test with fluconazole. Although the potentially genotoxic bisphenol A degradation product was found, the acute toxicity of the formed compounds differs little in comparison to the parent bisphenols.

Abstract
Pure water scarcity is an emerging, all-around problem that globally affects both the life quality and the world's economy. Heterogeneous photocatalysis under solar irradiation is a promising technique for the organic pollutants (e.g., pesticides, drugs) removal from an aqueous environment. Furthermore, the drawbacks of commercially available photocatalysts can be successfully overcome by using innovative nanoparticles, such as ZrO2/Fe3O4. Four ZrO2/Fe3O4 nanopowders with a different mass ratio of ZrO2 and Fe3O4 were synthesized using the chemical co-precipitation method. XRD analysis showed the presence of magnetite and hematite Fe-oxide phases in all samples. The content of the magnetite phase increased with the addition of 19% ZrO2. The efficiency of the newly synthesized ZrO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles was investigated in the rapid removal of selected pollutants under various experimental conditions. Nevertheless, the influence of the water matrix on photocatalytic degradation was also examined. The obtained data showed that using ZrO2/Fe3O4 nanosystems, an appropriate removal rate of the selected pesticides and pharmaceuticals can be reached after 120 min of solar irradiation. Further, the total organic carbon measurements proved the mineralization of the target emerging pollutants. ZrO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles are economically feasible, as their removal from the suspension can be easily achieved using affordable, environmentally-friendly magnetic separation.

Abstract
Pesticide pollution is a major issue, given their intensive use in the 20th century, which led to their accumulation in the environment. At the international level, strict regulations are imposed on the use of pesticides, simultaneously with the increasing interest of researchers from all over the world to find methods of neutralizing them. Photocatalytic degradation is an intensively studied method to be applied for the degradation of pesticides, especially through the use of solar energy. The mechanisms of photocatalysis are studied and implemented in pilot and semi-pilot installations on experimental platforms, in order to be able to make this method more efficient and to identify the equipment that can achieve the photodegradation of pesticides with the highest possible yields. This paper proposes a brief review of the impact of pesticides on the environment and some techniques for their degradation, with the main emphasis on different photoreactor configurations, using slurry or immobilized photocatalysts. This review highlights the efforts of researchers to harmonize the main elements of photocatalysis: choice of the photocatalyst, and the way of photocatalyst integration within photoreaction configuration, in order to make the transfer of momentum, mass, and energy as efficient as possible for optimal excitation of the photocatalyst.

Abstract
Nanocomposites comprising nitrogen-doped TiO2 and reduced graphene oxide (N/TiO2/rGO), with different rGO loading qualities, were prepared by a cost-effective microwave-assisted synthesis method. The synthesized materials were broadly characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Anatase was the only crystalline phase observed for all synthesized materials. The rGO loading did not affect the morphological properties, but it positively influenced the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite materials, especially at low rGO loading. Photocatalysts were evaluated via the degradation of specific organic micropollutant (OMP) pharmaceuticals: ciprofloxacin (CIP), diclofenac (DCF), and salicylic acid (SA), under different radiation sources: ultraviolet A (UVA), solar light simulator (SLS), blue visible light (BVL) and cold visible light (CVL). CIP and SA were removed effectively via the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis, while DCF degradation was achieved solely by photocatalysis. After implementing scavenger agents, photocatalytic degradation processes mainly depended on the specific pollutant type, while irradiation sources barely defined the photocatalytic mechanism. On the other hand, changes in irradiation intensity significantly influenced the photolysis process, while photocatalysis was slightly affected, indicating that irradiation spectra are more relevant than intensity.

Abstract
Air pollution is becoming a distinctly growing concern and the most pressing universal problem as a result of increased energy consumption, with the multiplication of the human population and industrial enterprises, resulting in the generation of hazardous pollutants. Among these, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, Volatile organic compounds, Semi volatile organic compounds, and other inorganic gases not only have an adverse impact on human health both outdoors and indoors, but have also substantially altered the global climate, resulting in several calamities around the world. Thus, the purification of air is a crucial matter to deal with. Photocatalytic oxidation is one of the most recent and promising technologies, and it has been the subject of numerous studies over the past two decades. Hence, the photocatalyst is the most reassuring aspirant due to its adequate bandgap and exquisite stability. The process of photocatalysis has provided many benefits to the atmosphere by removing pollutants. In this review, our work focuses on four main themes. Firstly, we briefly elaborated on the general mechanism of air pollutant degradation, followed by an overview of the typical TiO2 photocatalyst, which is the most researched photocatalyst for photocatalytic destruction of gaseous VOCs. The influence of operating parameters influencing the process of photocatalytic oxidation (such as mass transfer, light source and intensity, pollutant concentration, and relative humidity) was then summarized. Afterwards, the progress and drawbacks of some typical photoreactors (including monolithic reactors, microreactors, optical fiber reactors, and packed bed reactors) were described and differentiated. Lastly, the most noteworthy coverage is dedicated to different types of modification strategies aimed at ameliorating the performance of photocatalysts for degradation of air pollutants, which were proposed and addressed. In addition, the review winds up with a brief deliberation for more exploration into air purification photocatalysis.

Abstract
The present work dealt with the development of a protective and functional oxide layer via one-step plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on pure titanium by employing highly concentrated aluminate solution in a short processing time. A compositional analysis showed that Al2TiO5 active compound was formed successfully by means of Al2O3 incorporation when TiO2 was spontaneously developed with the aid of plasma swarms. The electrochemical performance showed the protective and functional capabilities of the layer, which was attributed to the respective amounts of Al2O3 and Al2TiO5. Such capabilities were achieved in a short processing time, thus reducing the total production cost.

Abstract
Today, the building and construction sector demands environmentally friendly and sustainable protective coatings using inorganic coating materials for safe, non-hazardous, and great performance. Many researchers have been working on sustainable solutions to protect concrete and metal infrastructures against corrosion and surface deterioration with the intention of introducing green alternatives to conventional coatings. This article presents a review of developments of geopolymer pastes doped with different types of photocatalyst precursors including factors affecting geopolymer properties for enhancing coating with photocatalytic performance. Photodegradation using geopolymer photocatalyst has great potential for resolving harmless substances and removing pollutants when energized with ultraviolet (UV) light. Although geopolymer is a potentially new material with great properties, there has been less research focusing on the development of this coating. This study demonstrated that geopolymer binders are ideal precursor support materials for the synthesis of photocatalytic materials, with a significant potential for optimizing their distinctive properties.
