Neural mechanisms of involuntary attention to acoustic novelty and change

Habituation of the orienting response as reflected by the skin conductance response and by endogenous event-related brain potentials

The paper is concerned with the question of whether endogenous components of the auditory event-related brain potential (ERP) qualify for showing habituation of the orienting response (OR). Although response decrements have been found in nearly every ERP component, this question is still of current concern because a true selective response inhibition proving habituation of the OR is still lacking. The question has been tackled using single-trial ERP measurements in classical variants of the repetition/change paradigm commonly used in the traditional OR research on autonomous responses such as the skin conductance response (SCR). Results on 120 adults indicate that at least two endogenous components of the ERP, an anterior slow negative wave and a posterior slow positive wave, meet essential requirements of habituation: like the exemplary OR component, the SCR, both slow waves declined systematically with repeated stimulations and, more than that, recovered in response to fundamental changes. In the same way, an anterior positivity resembling the novelty P3 levelled off systematically with the stimulations, but without showing recovery. Thus, in so far as habituation of the OR is conceptualised as a selective inhibitory central nervous system process which can be assumed to have taken place only if a systematic (usually exponential) response decrement is followed by a recovery, the generalised decrement of the P3 cannot be equated with habituation, whereas the selective response diminution of both slow waves would have to be regarded as typical of habituation.

Examining task-dependencies of different attentional processes as reflected in the P3a and reorienting negativity components of the human event-related brain potential

Unexpected changes in task-irrelevant auditory stimuli are capable to distract processing of task-relevant visual information. This effect is accompanied by the elicitation of event-related potential (ERP) components associated with attentional orientation, i.e. P3a and reorienting negativity (RON). In the present study we varied the demands of a visual task in order to test whether the RON component -- as an index of attentional reorientation after distraction -- is confined to a semantic task requiring working memory. In two ERP experiments we applied an auditory-visual distraction paradigm in which subjects were instructed to discriminate visual stimuli preceded by a task-irrelevant sound, this being either a standard tone (600 Hz, 88%) or a deviant tone (660 Hz, 12%). The visual stimuli were numbers which had to be judged on basis of a semantic (odd or even) or physical feature (either size or colour). As expected, deviance related ERP components namely the mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a, and RON were elicited. Importantly, the RON was affected by the variation of the task: within the semantic task an early RON and within the physical task a late RON was obtained. These results suggest that the RON component reflects two functionally distinct processes of attentional allocation after distraction: refocusing on task-relevant information on the working memory level, and general reorientation of attention, e.g. preparation for the upcoming task.

Brain responses to a subject's own name uttered by a familiar voice

Hearing one's own first name automatically elicits a robust electrophysiological response, even in conditions of reduced consciousness like sleep. In a search for objective clues to superior cognitive functions in comatose patients, we looked for an optimal auditory stimulation paradigm mobilizing a large population of neurons. Our hypothesis was that wider ERPs would be obtained in response to the subject's own name (SON) when a familiar person uttered it. In 15 healthy awake volunteers, we tested a passive oddball paradigm with three different novels presented with the same probability (P = 0.02): SON uttered by a familiar voice (FV) or by an unknown voice (NFV) and a non-vocal stimulus (NV) which preserved most of the physical characteristics of SON FV. ERP (32 electrodes) and scalp current density (SCD) maps were analyzed. SON appeared to generate more robust responses related to involuntary attention switching (MMN/N2b, novelty P3) than NV. When uttered by a familiar person, the SON elicited larger response amplitudes in the late phase of novelty P3 (after 300 ms). Most important differences were found in the late slow waves where two components could be temporally and spatially dissociated. A larger parietal component for FV than for NFV suggested deeper high-level processing, even if the subjects were not required to explicitly differentiate or recognize the voices. This passive protocol could therefore provide a valuable tool for clinicians to test residual superior cognitive functions in uncooperative patients.

Two separate mechanisms underlie auditory change detection and involuntary control of attention

We used behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures to study the neural mechanisms of involuntary attention switching to changes in unattended sounds. Our subjects discriminated two equiprobable sounds differing in frequency (fundamental frequency 186 or 196 Hz) while task-irrelevant intensity decrements or increments (-3, -6, -9, +3, +6, or +9 dB, standard intensity 60 dB HL) infrequently occurred in the same sounds. In line with the results of previous studies, discrimination performance deteriorated with increasing magnitude of the task-irrelevant intensity change. However, these distraction effects were dissimilar for intensity increments and decrements: while there were no differences in reaction time (RT) between intensity decrements and increments, hit rates (HR) were lower for large intensity increments than for large decrements. ERPs to task-irrelevant intensity increments and decrements were also distinctly different: the response to intensity increments consisted of an N1 enhancement, mismatch negativity (MMN), and P3a, while the response to intensity decrements consisted only of MMN. These results are consistent with the assumption that two separate mechanisms (indexed by N1 and MMN) underlie auditory change detection. However, the finding that distinct distraction effects were obtained for both intensity decrements and increments but that the P3a is elicited only by the intensity increments seems to suggest that P3a may not be regarded as a general index of attentional shift but rather it is only generated in conditions in which an enhanced N1 is elicited, too.

DISTRACTIBILITY IN AD/HD PREDOMINANTLY INATTENTIVE AND COMBINED SUBTYPES: THE P3a ERP COMPONENT, HEART RATE AND PERFORMANCE

The current study aimed to investigate whether children and adolescents diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Predominantly Inattentive (AD/HD-in; Child n = 24, Adolescent n = 33) and Combined (AD/HD-com; Child n = 30, Adolescent n = 42) subtypes were more distractible than controls (Child n = 54; Adolescents n = 75), by assessing event-related potential (ERP), performance and peripheral arousal measures. All AD/HD groups displayed smaller amplitudes and/or shorter latencies of the P3a ERP component - thought to reflect involuntary attention switching - following task-deviant novel stimuli (checkerboard patterns) embedded in a Working Memory (WM) task. The P3a results suggested that both AD/HD-in and AD/HD-com subtypes ineffectively evaluate deviant stimuli and are hence more "distractible". These abnormalities were most pronounced over the central areas. AD/HD groups did not display any abnormalities in averaged heart rate over the WM task, a measure of peripheral arousal. They did display abnormalities in performance measures from the task, but these were unrelated to P3a abnormalities. AD/HD groups also displayed a number of deficits on Switching of Attention and Verbal Memory tasks, however, the pattern of abnormality mostly reflected general cognitive deficits rather than resulting from distraction.

Newborns discriminate novel from harmonic sounds: A study using magnetoencephalography

OBJECTIVE

We investigated whether newborns respond differently to novel and deviant sounds during quiet sleep.

METHODS

Twelve healthy neonates were presented with a three-stimulus oddball paradigm, consisting of frequent standard (76%), infrequent deviant (12%), and infrequent novel stimuli (12%). The standards and deviants were counterbalanced between the newborns and consisted of 500 and 750 Hz tones with two upper harmonics. The novel stimuli contained animal, human, and mechanical sounds. All stimuli had a duration of 300 ms and the stimulus onset asynchrony was 1s. Evoked magnetic responses during quiet sleep were recorded and averaged offline.

RESULTS

Two deflections peaking at 345 and 615 ms after stimulus onset were observed in the evoked responses of most of the newborns. The first deflection was larger to novel and deviant stimuli than to the standard and, furthermore, larger to novel than to deviant stimuli. The second deflection was larger to novel and deviant stimuli than to standards, but did not differ between the novels and deviants.

CONCLUSIONS

The two deflections found in the present study reflect different mechanisms of auditory change detection and discriminative processes.

SIGNIFICANCE

The early brain indicators of novelty detection may be crucial in assessing the normal and abnormal cortical function in newborns. Further, studying evoked magnetic fields to complex auditory stimulation in healthy newborns is needed for studying the newborns at-risk for cognitive or language problems.

Neuropsychology and neuropharmacology of P3a and P3b

Perspectives on the P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) are reviewed by outlining the distinction between the P3a and P3b subcomponents. The critical factor for eliciting P3a is how target/standard discrimination difficulty rather than novelty modulates task processing. The neural loci of P3a and P3b generation are sketched and a theoretical model is developed. P3a originates from stimulus-driven disruption of frontal attention engagement during task processing. P3b originates when temporal-parietal mechanisms process the stimulus information for memory storage. The neuropharmacological implications of this view are then outlined by evaluating how acute and chronic use of ethanol, marijuana, and nicotine affect P3a and P3b. The findings suggest that the circuit underlying ERP generation is influenced in a different ways for acute intake and varies between chronic use levels across drugs. Theoretical implications are assessed.

The effect of visual task difficulty and attentional direction on the detection of acoustic change as indexed by the Mismatch Negativity

Näätänen's model of auditory processing purports that attention does not affect the MMN. The present study investigates this claim through two different manipulations. First, the effect of visual task difficulty on the passively elicited MMN is assessed. Second, the MMNs elicited by stimuli under attended and ignored conditions are compared. In Experiment 1, subjects were presented with mixed sequences of equiprobable auditory and visual stimuli. The auditory stimuli consisted of standard (80 dB SPL 1000 Hz), frequency deviant (1050 Hz), and intensity deviant (70 dB SPL) tone pips. In a first instance, subjects were instructed to ignore the auditory stimulation and engage in an easy and difficult visual discrimination task (focused condition). Subsequently, they were asked to attend to both modalities and detect visual and auditory deviant stimuli (divided condition). The results indicate that the passively elicited MMN to frequency and intensity deviants did not significantly vary with visual task difficulty, in spite of the fact that the easy and difficult tasks showed a wide variation in performance. The manipulation of the attentional direction (focused vs. divided conditions) did result in a significant effect on the MMN elicited by the intensity, but not frequency, deviant. The intensity MMN was larger at frontal sites when subjects' attention was directed to both modalities as compared to only the visual modality. The attentional effect on the MMN to the intensity deviants only may be due to the specific deviant feature or the poorer perceptual discriminability of this deviant from the standard. Experiment 2 was designed to address this issue. The methods of Experiment 2 were identical to those of Experiment 1 with the exception that the intensity deviant (60 dB SPL) was made to be more perceptible than the frequency deviant (1016 Hz) when compared to the standard stimulus (80 dB SPL 1000 Hz). The results of Experiment 2 also demonstrated that the passively elicited MMN was not affected by large variations in visual task difficulty; this provides convincing evidence that the MMN is independent of visual task demands. Similarly to Experiment 1, the direction of attention again had a significant effect on the MMN. In Experiment 2, however, the frequency MMN (and not the intensity MMN) was larger at frontal sites during divided attention compared to focused visual attention. The most parsimonious explanation of these results is that attention enhances the discriminability of the deviant from the standard background stimulation. As such, small acoustic changes would benefit from attention whereas the discriminability of larger changes may not be significantly enhanced.

Auditory change detection in schizophrenia: sources of activity, related neuropsychological function and symptoms in patients with a first episode in adolescence, and patients 14 years after an adolescent illness-onset

BACKGROUND

The event-related brain response mismatch negativity (MMN) registers changes in auditory stimulation with temporal lobe sources reflecting short-term echoic memory and frontal sources a deviance-induced switch in processing. Impairment, controversially present at the onset of schizophrenia, develops rapidly and can remain independent of clinical improvement. We examined the characteristics of the scalp-recorded MMN and related these to tests of short-term memory and set-shifting. We assessed whether the equivalent dipole sources are affected already at illness-onset in adolescence and how these features differ after a 14-year course following an adolescent onset. The strength, latency, orientation and location of frontal and temporal lobe sources of MMN activity early and late in the course of adolescent-onset schizophrenia are analysed and illustrated.

METHODS

MMN, a measure of auditory change-detection, was elicited by short deviant tones in a 3-tone oddball-presentation and recorded from 32 scalp electrodes. Four dipole sources were placed following hypothesis-led calculations using brain electrical source analysis on brain atlas and MR-images. A short neuropsychological test battery was administered. We compared 28 adolescent patients with a first episode of schizophrenia and 18 patients 14 years after diagnosis in adolescence with two age-matched control groups from the community (n = 22 and 18, respectively).

RESULTS

MMN peaked earlier in the younger than the older subjects. The amplitude was reduced in patients, especially the younger group, and was here associated with negative symptoms and slow set-shifting. In first-episode patients the temporal lobe sources were more ventral than in controls, while the left cingular and right inferior-mid frontal sources were more caudal. In the older patients the left temporal locus remained ventral (developmental stasis), the right temporal locus extended more antero-laterally (illness progression), and the right frontal source moved antero-laterally (normalised).

CONCLUSION

From the start of the illness there were differences in the dipole-model between healthy and patient groups. Separate characteristics of the sources of the activity differences showed an improvement, stasis or deterioration with illness-duration. The precise nature of the changes in the sources of MMN activity and their relationship to selective information processing and storage depend on the specific psychopathology and heterogeneous course of the illness.

Training in Morse code enhances involuntary attentional switching to acoustic frequency: Evidence from ERPs

This study examined the possibility that learning Morse code could result in cortical changes in processing of physical acoustic features, as indexed by the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a components of the auditory event-related potential (ERP). ERPs were recorded in 9 subjects who were learning Morse code. The subjects were presented with auditory stimuli at 3 different times relative to their training (before, during and after). These stimuli were presented within an auditory 'oddball' paradigm, with repetitive standard stimuli interspersed by one of three infrequent deviant stimuli (duration, frequency or SOA). The data showed that there was a significant increase in the P3a only for frequency deviants as a function of training, whereas the MMN response was not affected by the training. These data are interpreted in terms of an attentional switching to unfamiliar changes that participants would not expect among the signals that they would grow to anticipate while receiving Morse code.

Change detection in children with autism: An auditory event-related fMRI study

Autism involves impairments in communication and social interaction, as well as high levels of repetitive, stereotypic, and ritualistic behaviours, and extreme resistance to change. This latter dimension, whilst required for a diagnosis, has received less research attention. We hypothesise that this extreme resistance to change in autism is rooted in atypical processing of unexpected stimuli. We tested this using auditory event-related fMRI to determine regional brain activity associated with passive detection of infrequently occurring frequency-deviant and complex novel sounds in a no-task condition. Participants were twelve 10- to 15-year-old children with autism and a group of 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. During deviance detection, significant activation common to both groups was located in the superior temporal and inferior frontal gyri. During 'novelty detection', both groups showed activity in the superior temporal gyrus, the temporo-parietal junction, the superior and inferior frontal gyri, and the cingulate gyrus. Children with autism showed reduced activation of the left anterior cingulate cortex during both deviance and novelty detection. During novelty detection, children with autism also showed reduced activation in the bilateral temporo-parietal region and in the right inferior and middle frontal areas. This study confirms previous evidence from ERP studies of atypical brain function related to automatic change detection in autism. Abnormalities involved a cortical network known to have a role in attention switching and attentional resource distribution. These results throw light on the neurophysiological processes underlying autistic 'resistance to change'.

The effect of age on involuntary capture of attention by irrelevant sounds: A test of the frontal hypothesis of aging

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of aging on the involuntary capture of attention by irrelevant sounds (distraction) and the use of these sounds as warning cues (alertness) in an oddball paradigm. We compared the performance of older and younger participants on a well-characterized auditory-visual distraction task. Based on the dissociations observed in aging between attentional processes sustained by the anterior and posterior attentional networks, our prediction was that distraction by irrelevant novel sounds would be stronger in older adults than in young adults while both groups would be equally able to use sound as an alert to prepare for upcoming stimuli. The results confirmed both predictions: there was a larger distraction effect in the older participants, but the alert effect was equivalent in both groups. Is the failure to detect stimulus deviance during sleep due to a rapid fading of sensory memory or a degradation of stimulus encoding?

The mismatch negativity (MMN) is thought to reflect the outcome of a system responsible for the detection of change in an otherwise repetitive, homogenous acoustic environment. This process depends on the storage and maintenance of a sensory representation of the frequently presented stimulus to which the deviant stimulus is compared. Few studies have been able to record the MMN in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. This pattern of results might be explained by either a rapid fading of sensory memory or an inhibition of stimulus input prior to entry into the cortical MMN generator site. The present study used a very rapid rate of presentation in an attempt to capture mismatch-related negativity prior to the fading of sensory memory. Auditory event-related potentials were recorded from 12 subjects during a single sleep period. A 1000 Hz standard stimulus was presented every 150 ms. At random, on 6.6% of the trials, the standard was changed to either a large 2000 Hz or a small 1100 Hz deviant. In wakefulness, the large deviant elicited an extended negativity that was reduced in amplitude following the presentation of the small deviant. This negativity was also apparent during REM sleep following the presentation of the large deviant. These deviant-related negativities (DRNs) were probably a composite of N1 and MMN activity. During NREM sleep (stage 2 and slow-wave sleep), only the large deviant continued to elicit a DRN. However this DRN might be overlapped by the initial activity of a component that is unique to sleep, the N350. There was little evidence of the DRN or the MMN during sleep following the presentation of the small deviant. A rapid rate of presentation, therefore, does not preserve the MMN following small deviance within sleep. It is possible that inhibition of sensory input occurs before entry into the MMN generating system in the temporal cortex.

The discrimination of and orienting to speech and non-speech sounds in children with autism

The present study aimed to find out how different stages of cortical auditory processing (sound encoding, discrimination, and orienting) are affected in children with autism. To this end, auditory event-related potentials (ERP) were studied in 15 children with autism and their controls. Their responses were recorded for pitch, duration, and vowel changes in speech stimuli, and for corresponding changes in the non-speech counterparts of the stimuli, while the children watched silent videos and ignored the stimuli. The responses to sound repetition were diminished in amplitude in the children with autism, reflecting impaired sound encoding. The mismatch negativity (MMN), an ERP indexing sound discrimination, was enhanced in the children with autism as far as pitch changes were concerned. This is consistent with earlier studies reporting auditory hypersensitivity and good pitch-processing abilities, as well as with theories proposing enhanced perception of local stimulus features in individuals with autism. The discrimination of duration changes was impaired in these children, however. Finally, involuntary orienting to sound changes, as reflected by the P3a ERP, was more impaired for speech than non-speech sounds in the children with autism, suggesting deficits particularly in social orienting. This has been proposed to be one of the earliest symptoms to emerge, with pervasive effects on later development.

Event-related potential measures of the disruptive effects of trains of auditory stimuli during waking and sleeping states

Acoustic backup alarms have been reported to particularly disrupt sleep. The present study simulated backup alarms by presenting trains of five consecutive 500 ms duration audible tones, with the time between the onset of each tone being 1 s and the time between trains (offset to onset) between 15 and 20 s. In different conditions, the tones were set at either 80 or 60 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Twelve young adults spent two consecutive nights in the laboratory. Stimuli were presented only on the second night. Measures of traditional sleep architecture (sleep stages) were not affected by the acoustic trains. Event-related potentials were also measured following presentation of the stimuli. In the waking state, the initial 80 dB stimulus elicited a large amplitude N1, peaking at about 100 ms, followed by a positive peak, P3, peaking at about 325 ms. N1 was attenuated following presentation of the 60 dB stimulus. The amplitude of N1 was much reduced following presentation of the subsequent second to fifth stimuli in the train. During non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, the initial 80 dB stimulus elicited a large and later negativity (N350) that was reduced in amplitude for the 60 dB stimulus. A K-Complex (a composite N350 and a much larger N550) was elicited following 35% of the initial 80 dB tones and 12% of the initial 60 dB tones. The amplitude of N550 did not, however, significantly vary as a function of stimulus SPL. During REM sleep, N1 continued to be elicited by the initial louder stimulus, but the later positive wave was not apparent. A late negativity peaking at about 350 ms was, however, apparent. When queried the next morning, subjects rarely indicated that the stimulus presentations disturbed their sleep. This might be because of the absence of the late positivity. The presence of the long latency negativities (N350 and N550) might serve to protect sleep from obtrusive sound during sleep.

Attentional load of the primary task influences the frontal but not the temporal generators of mismatch negativity

According to the model hypothesized by Näätänen and Michie, the generation of the mismatch negativity (MMN) requires a mismatch detection, taking place in temporal areas, followed by the activation of frontal generators, underlying attention switching toward the deviant stimulus. We aimed at verifying whether the activation of temporal and frontal regions is dependent on the amount of attentional resources allocable toward the deviant stimulus. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in nine healthy subjects while reading and during a demanding visual task (Multiple Features Target Cancellation, MFTC). Raw data were further evaluated by Brain Electrical Source Analysis (BESA). During the Reading condition, distraction toward the unattended auditory stimuli was reflected by the enhancement of the N1 response to frequent stimuli and by the elicitation of a P3a response to deviant ones. The MMN distribution was explained by bilateral temporal dipoles. During the MFTC condition, no P3a was detected, while source analysis showed the activation of a right frontal generator. Temporal dipoles showed no change between the two conditions: we thus conclude that the earlier mismatch detection is independent on the attentional load. By contrast, the activation of a right frontal subcomponent occurred only during the high-load task, independently on any actual attention shift reflected by the P3a component. We thus discuss the hypothesis whether the right frontal MMN generator, rather than subserving a simple attention switching toward the deviant stimulus, plays a role in modulating the auditory change detection system ("contrast enhancement" model).

Does sleep quality affect involuntary attention switching system?

We studied the relationship between sleep quality and quantity and subsequently recorded automatically evoked event-related potential (ERP) responses. In previous studies decrement of attentional processing has been associated with changes in sleep. Sleep is shown to associate also with ERPs elicited by unattended sound stream, however, there is no consensus on these effects. A recent study suggested that the early anterior P3a to novel stimuli in attended stream is attenuated and the late parietal P3a is strengthened by total sleep deprivation. We carried out 72-h consecutive actigraphy measurements in a naturalistic setting to collect information about variation in sleep duration, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, and percentage of sleep. MMN and P3a deflections to infrequent changes in sound duration and pitch in unattended sound stream were obtained in a separate recording session from the same subjects when they were awake. No significant correlations were found between sleep and MMN parameters, indicating that MMN is resistant to normal variation in sleep. However, P3a to both pitch and duration changes correlated positively with sleep onset latency, and P3a to duration changes correlated negatively with sleep efficiency and percentage of sleep. The correlation was higher in the posterior scalp areas. Our results suggest that the involuntary attention switching system, reflected by the P3a is sensitized as a function of decreased sleep quality.

Processing of highly novel auditory events in children and adults: an event-related potential study

In this study, the neural mechanisms of novelty detection in children and adults were examined by means of novelty-elicited event-related potentials. The gross morphology of the event-related potentials elicited by complex, novel stimuli was similar in children and adults, suggesting that processing of novel acoustic information is essentially similar across the age groups. The more frontally distributed P3 components and the larger late frontal negativities in children than in adults suggest an age-related change in activity in the frontal part of the brain. This is consistent with the findings showing that the structural maturation of the frontal cortex does not appear to be completed until late adolescence.

Human striatal activation reflects degree of stimulus saliency

Salient stimuli are characterized by their capability to perturb and seize available cognitive resources. Although the striatum and its dopaminergic inputs respond to a variety of stimuli categorically defined as salient, including rewards, the relationship between striatal activity and saliency is not well understood. Specifically, it is unclear if the striatum responds in an all-or-none fashion to salient events or instead responds in a graded fashion to the degree of saliency associated with an event. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we measured activity in the brains of 20 participants performing a visual classification task in which they identified single digits as odd or even numbers. An auditory tone preceded each number, which was occasionally, and unexpectedly, substituted by a novel sound. The novel sounds varied in their ability to interrupt and reallocate cognitive resources (i.e., their saliency) as measured by a delay in reaction time to immediately subsequent numerical task-stimuli. The present findings demonstrate that striatal activity increases proportionally to the degree to which an unexpected novel sound interferes with the current cognitive focus, even in the absence of reward. These results suggest that activity in the human striatum reflects the level of saliency associated with a stimulus, perhaps providing a signal to reallocate limited resources to important events.

Involuntary orientation of attention to unattended deviant nociceptive stimuli is modulated by concomitant visual task difficulty. Evidence from laser evoked potentials

OBJECTIVE

Recent laser evoked potential (LEP) studies showed that unattended rare intensity-deviant nociceptive stimuli enhance the LEP vertex positivity P2 ('P400 effect'). It was hypothesized to reflect an involuntary switch of attention to nociceptive events. If true the P400 effect (1) should be produced when attention is focused on a task in another sensory modality (primary task), and (2) should be modulated by the primary task difficulty.

METHODS

Subjects had to count the number of visual symbols presented on a screen. In a difficult condition, symbols were digits 1-4 (interference between amount and meaning). In an easy condition, symbols were letters X (no interference). Nociceptive CO2 laser stimuli were simultaneously delivered on the left hand. Occasional stronger deviant stimuli (16%) were presented at random. In additional sessions, the strong stimuli were presented alone in homogenous series (100%).

RESULTS

LEP amplitude at about 400 ms was larger for rare deviant than for homogenous stimuli. Visual task difficulty decreased LEP amplitude at this latency. Deviant stimuli seemed also to interfere with performance in the visual task.

CONCLUSIONS

The results give evidence for considering the P400 effect as reflecting an involuntary attentional shift to nociceptive events.

SIGNIFICANCE

The study provides electrophysiological evidences for an intrusive capacity of pain to attract attention and to decrease behavioural performance in concurrent processes. In turn, such an attentional shift is tampered if attention is very engaged in a concomitant task.

“…and were instructed to read a self-selected book while ignoring the auditory stimuli”: The effects of task demands on the mismatch negativity

OBJECTIVE

The Mismatch Negativity (MMN) is commonly recorded while the subject is reading, and instructed to ignore the auditory stimuli. It is generally assumed that the demands of the diversion task will have no effect on the MMN. Several studies, however, have reported that a diversion task presumably requiring strong attentional focus is associated with a smaller MMN than that elicited during a less demanding task. This study examines the effect of variations in the classical reading paradigm on the MMN.

METHODS

In Experiment 1, event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded while subjects were presented with standard (80 dB SPL 1000 Hz) and frequency deviant (1050 Hz) stimuli. Subjects were instructed to ignore the tone pips and, in separate conditions, engage in different tasks. They were asked to read a text or to sit passively. Subjects were informed that they would subsequently be queried or not about the content of the reading. In Experiment 2, the auditory sequence included the same standard (80 dB SPL 1000 Hz) but the deviant was changed to an intensity decrement (70 dB SPL). A different sample of subjects was again asked to ignore the auditory stimuli and engage in different reading tasks that would or not be followed by query.

RESULTS

In all task conditions, MMN was elicited by the frequency and intensity change. The intensity MMN did not significantly vary with task. A significant effect of task was, however, found for the frequency MMN. Its amplitude was largest when subjects were later queried about their reading.

CONCLUSIONS

This finding is counter-intuitive in light of previous research on the attentional modulation of the MMN. The pattern of frequency MMN results may relate to the differences in cortical excitability across tasks.

SIGNIFICANCE

The present results indicate that the nature of the diversion task may affect the MMN. The choice of diversion task during MMN recording should thus be carefully considered.

Determinants of dominance: Is language laterality explained by physical or linguistic features of speech?

The nature of cerebral asymmetry of the language function is still not fully understood. Two main views are that laterality is best explained (1) by left cortical specialization for the processing of spectrally rich and rapidly changing sounds, and (2) by a predisposition of one hemisphere to develop a module for phonemes. We tested both of these views by investigating magnetic brain responses to the same brief acoustic stimulus, placed in contexts where it was perceived either as a noise burst with no resemblance of speech, or as a native language sound being part of a meaningless pseudoword. In further experiments, the same acoustic element was placed in the context of words. We found reliable left hemispheric dominance only when the sound was placed in word context. These results, obtained in a passive odd-ball paradigm, suggest that neither physical properties nor phoneme status of a sound are sufficient for laterality. In order to elicit left lateralized cortical activation in normal right-handed individuals, a rapidly changing spectrally rich sound with phoneme status needs to be placed in the context of frequently encountered larger language elements, such as words. This demonstrates that language laterality is bound to the processing of sounds as units of frequently occurring meaningful items and can thus be linked to the processes of learning and memory trace formation for such items rather than to their physical or phonological properties.

Disruption of immediate memory and brain processes: an auditory ERP protocol

An event-related potential (ERP) protocol is described that can be used to investigate those sound-evoked neural processes that may be implicated in disrupting immediate memory. Conventional electroencephalogram (EEG) is recorded during the performance of a task that involves ignoring irrelevant sounds while trying to hold in memory lists of numbers. Specific bioelectric measures are made to prevent the contamination of recordings by the movements of articulators. An approach is also outlined which controls the timing of ERP components to sounds with different envelopes. Using this approach, it has been shown that the neural processes involved in the elicitation of the auditory N1 ERP response may be involved in the disruption of memory for serial order produced by irrelevant sound.

Frontal and temporal sources of mismatch negativity in healthy controls, patients at onset of schizophrenia in adolescence and others at 15 years after onset

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential measure of auditory change detection. It is widely reported to be smaller in patients with schizophrenia and may not improve along with otherwise successful clinical treatment. The main aim of this report is to explore ways of measuring and presenting four features of frequency-deviant MMN dipole sources (dipole moment, peak latency, brain location and orientation) and to relate these to the processes of psychopathology and illness progression. Data from early onset patients (EOS) at the start of the illness in adolescence, and others who had their first break in adolescence 15 years ago (S-15Y) were compared with two groups of age-matched healthy controls (C-EOS, C-15Y). A four-source model fitted the MMN waveform recorded from all four groups, whether MMN amplitude was more (EOS) or less (S-15Y) reduced. The locations were in the left superior temporal and anterior cingulate gyri, right superior temporal and inferior/mid frontal cortices. Dipole latencies confirmed a bottom-up sequence of processing and dipole moments were larger in the temporal lobes and on the left. Patients showed small dipole location changes that were more marked in the S-15Y than the EOS group (more rostral for the left anterior cingulate, more caudal for the right mid-frontal dipole) consistent with illness progression. The modelling of MMN dipole sources on brain atlas and anatomical images suggests that there is a degree of dissociation during illness between small progressive anatomical changes and some functional recovery indexed by scalp recordings from patients with an onset in adolescence 15 years before compared to adolescents in their first episode.

Visual task complexity modulates the brain??s response to unattended auditory novelty

New, unusual, and changing events are important environmental cues, and the ability to detect these types of stimuli in the environment constitutes a biologically significant survival skill. We used event-related potentials to examine whether sensory and cognitive neural responses to unattended novel events are modulated by the complexity of a primary visuomotor task. Event-related potentials were elicited by unattended task-irrelevant pitch-deviant tones and novel environmental sounds while study participants performed a continuous visuomotor tracking task at two levels of difficulty, achieved by manipulating the control dynamics of a joystick. The results revealed that increased task complexity modulated evoked sensory and cognitive event-related potential components, indicating that detection of change and novelty in the unattended auditory channel is resource-limited.

Auditory event-related potentials as a function of abstract change magnitude

Event-related potentials were recorded in healthy volunteers to test the accuracy of the human brain to extract, preattentively, auditory abstract rules. The abstract rule was determined by the frequency relationship between two pure tones forming a pair. The standard pairs had identical tone frequency, whereas the deviant pairs had the second tone two, four, six or eight musical steps higher or lower in frequency than the first one. All abstract changes elicited mismatch negativity, which was not affected by the magnitude of change. However, the subsequent P3a increased as a function of the magnitude of the abstract change. These results suggest that mismatch negativity detects violations of abstract rules, and the amount of violation is analyzed in subsequent stages of auditory processing.

What is novel in the novelty oddball paradigm? Functional significance of the novelty P3 event-related potential as revealed by independent component analysis

To better understand whether voluntary attention affects how the brain processes novel events, variants of the auditory novelty oddball paradigm were presented to two different groups of human volunteers. One group of subjects (n=16) silently counted rarely presented 'infrequent' tones (p=0.10), interspersed with 'novel' task-irrelevant unique environmental sounds (p=0.10) and frequently presented 'standard' tones (p=0.80). A second group of subjects (n=17) silently counted the 'novel' environmental sounds, the 'infrequent' tones now serving as the task-irrelevant deviant events. Analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded from 63 scalp channels suggested a spatiotemporal overlap of fronto-central novelty P3 and centro-parietal P3 (P3b) ERP features in both groups. Application of independent component analysis (ICA) to concatenated single trials revealed two independent component clusters that accounted for portions of the novelty P3 and P3b response features, respectively. The P3b-related ICA cluster contributed to the novelty P3 amplitude response to novel environmental sounds. In contrast to the scalp ERPs, the amplitude of the novelty P3 related cluster was not affected by voluntary attention, that is, by the target/nontarget distinction. This result demonstrates the usefulness of ICA for disentangling spatiotemporally overlapping ERP processes and provides evidence that task irrelevance is not a necessary feature of novelty processing.

Superior temporal and inferior frontal cortices are activated by infrequent sound duration decrements: an fMRI study

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the processing of infrequent changes occurring in an unattended sound sequence. In event-related brain potentials (ERPs), such sound changes typically elicit several responses, including an enhanced N1, the mismatch negativity (MMN), and the P3a. In the present study, subjects were presented with a repeating sound of 75 ms in duration, which was occasionally replaced, in separate blocks, by a 15-ms, 25-ms, or 35-ms sound (large, medium, and small change, respectively). In the baseline block, only the frequent 75-ms sound was presented. During the scanning, the subjects were instructed to ignore the sounds while watching a silent wildlife documentary. We assumed that in this condition, the MMN mechanism would contribute more to the observed activation than the other change-related processes. We expected sound changes to elicit fMRI activation bilaterally in the supratemporal cortices, where the electric MMN is mainly generated, and that the magnitude of this activation would increase with the magnitude of sound duration change. Unexpectedly, however, we found that only blocks with medium duration changes (25 ms) showed significant activation in the supratemporal cortex. In addition, as reported in some previous EEG and fMRI studies, contrasts between different levels of sound duration change revealed additional activation in the inferior frontal cortex bilaterally. This activation tended to be greater for the small and medium changes than for the large ones.

Dopamine D4 receptor exon III genotype influence on the auditory evoked novelty P3

The functional implications of the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) exon III polymorphism and its role in the modulation of temperament and in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders are still a matter of debate. Based on evidence from animal studies, we hypothesised that this polymorphism is involved in the modulation of the cortical response to novelty as reflected by the auditory evoked novelty P3 event-related potential. In a sample of 46 healthy volunteers, we observed an interactive effect of DRD4 exon III genotype and the eye-blink rate, a measure of central dopaminergic activity, on the novelty P3. These findings suggest that the DRD4 exon III polymorphism influences the processing of novelty and that this influence depends on tonic dopaminergic activity.

Phonological oddballs in the focus of attention elicit a normal P3b in dyslexic adults

Difficulties in phonological processing have been proposed to be the core symptom of developmental dyslexia. Phoneme awareness tasks have been shown to both index and predict individual reading ability. In a previous experiment, we observed that dyslexic adults fail to display a P3a modulation for phonological deviants within an alliterated word stream when concentrating primarily on a lexical decision task [Fosker and Thierry, 2004, Neurosci. Lett. 357, 171-174]. Here we recorded the P3b oddball response elicited by initial phonemes within streams of alliterated words and pseudo-words when participants focussed directly on detecting the oddball phonemes. Despite significant verbal screening test differences between dyslexic adults and controls, the error rates, reactions times, and main components (P2, N2, P3a, and P3b) were indistinguishable across groups. The only difference between groups was found in the N1 range, where dyslexic participants failed to show the modulations induced by phonological pairings (/b/-/p/ versus /r/-/g/) in controls. In light of previous P3a differences, these results suggest an important role for attention allocation in the manifestation of phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Total sleep deprivation and novelty processing: implications for frontal lobe functioning

OBJECTIVE

Mounting evidence suggests that the frontal lobes are particularly vulnerable to total sleep deprivation (TSD). Detection of novelty involves the frontal lobes. The presentation of rare, novel stimuli elicits an event-related potential (novel P3), which maximizes over anterior regions of the scalp. We hypothesized that TSD would impair novelty detection, resulting in a smaller novel P3 over the frontal region, with a topographic shift toward posterior areas.

METHODS

An auditory novelty oddball task was administered to a TSD group after 36 h of waking and again following recovery sleep, and to a control group after 12 h of waking. EEG was recorded from Fz, Cz and Pz.

RESULTS

A large anterior P3 was elicited in the control group. In the TSD group, this novel P3 was smaller at Fz. A later novel positivity appeared in parietal areas. The novel P3 returned to baseline levels and the late novel P3 was difficult to observe following recovery sleep.

CONCLUSIONS

TSD appears to compromise the usual automatic detection of novelty probably due to frontal deactivation. Participants may compensate by relying on posterior brain mechanisms involving active memory comparison. The late novel P3 component may also reflect a secondary effortful attempt to encode and to categorize novel stimuli.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study suggests that TSD may compromise cognitive functioning in different regions of the brain. The detection of novelty, probably mediated by the frontal lobes, is particularly at risk.

Expectancy effects on omission evoked potentials in musicians and non-musicians

Abstract An expanded omitted stimulus paradigm was investigated to determine whether expectancy would modulate the amplitude of the omission evoked potentials (OEPs). In addition, we examined the effects of musical expertise on OEPs. Trials started with 3-7 beats randomly and contained 5 omitted beats. Three types of trials (n = 90) were presented with 1, 2, or 3 beats occurring between omissions. A tap response at the end of each trial was used to determine timing accuracy. Clear OEPs were observed over midline sites. We found main omission effects with respect to an N150 and a P400 OEPs component, such that peak amplitudes diminished whenever the occurrence of an omitted stimulus could be expected. In addition, an N600 OEPs component emerged in response to expectedly omitted stimuli toward the end of each trial within the group of musicians. Thus, musical training seems to lead to more efficient and more refined processing of auditory temporal patterns.

Alcohol impairs auditory processing of frequency changes and novel sounds: a combined MEG and EEG study

RATIONALE

Alcohol has been shown to impair involuntary attention studied by event-related potentials using mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a.

OBJECTIVES

However, no studies have investigated whether alcohol affects the magnetic counterparts of N1 (N1m), MMN (MMNm) and P3a (P3am).

METHODS

Auditory evoked potentials and magnetic fields elicited by infrequent deviant tones differing in frequency (5% and 20% change) and novel sounds were recorded with whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Stimuli were presented separately to the left and right ear. Eleven right-handed subjects were studied in a double-blind, placebo-controlled (0.8 g/kg ethanol or juice), cross-over design. N1m, MMNm, and P3am were calculated from the channel pair at the temporal cortex showing the strongest responses in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulation. N1, MMN and P3a were analyzed from 12 electrodes at the midline frontocentral area.

RESULTS

Alcohol reduced bilaterally N1, N1m, MMN and MMNm amplitudes. P3a amplitudes, but not P3am amplitudes were also significantly decreased. No effects of alcohol on the latencies of N1, MMN and P3a or their magnetic counterparts were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Alcohol impairs the processing of tones, frequency change and novel sounds at different phases of auditory processing similarly in both hemispheres. MEG provides us with additional information unobtainable with EEG about the effects of alcohol on the neural correlates of cognition.

Long-term exposure to occupational noise alters the cortical organization of sound processing

OBJECTIVE

Long-term exposure to noise may cause an altered hemispheric lateralization of speech processing even in silent conditions. We examined whether this lateralization shift is speech specific or occurs also for other sounds.

METHODS

Brain responses from 10 healthy noise-exposed workers (>5 years) and 10 matched controls were recorded with a 32-channel electroencephalogram in two conditions, one including standard and deviant speech sounds, the other non-speech sounds, with novel sounds in both.

RESULTS

The deviant-sound elicited mismatch negativity (MMN) was larger to non-speech than speech sounds in control subjects, while it did not differ between the sound types in the noise-exposed subjects. Moreover, the MMN to speech sounds was lateralized to the right hemisphere in exposed workers, while it was left-hemisphere predominant in control subjects. No group topography difference was found for non-speech sounds. The deviant sounds that were close in formant space to the standards elicited a longer MMN latency in both speech and non-speech conditions in exposed subjects than controls. No group differences were found for cortical responses to novel sounds.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term noise exposure altered the strength and the hemispheric organization of speech-sound discrimination and decreased the speed of sound-change processing.

SIGNIFICANCE

Subpathological changes in cortical responses to sounds may occur even in subjects without a peripheral damage but continuously exposed to noisy auditory environments.

Auditory distraction in young and middle-aged adults: a behavioural and event-related potential study

Cognitive tasks involving distraction are associated with an early age-related decline in performance. Involuntary shifts in attention to irrelevant stimulus features and subsequent reorientation were studied in young and middle-aged subjects focussing on behavioural and event-related potential (ERP) measures. Subjects were asked to discriminate between equiprobable short and long auditory stimuli. Irrelevant rare frequency deviations prolonged reaction times (RT's), while an age-related effect on RT's was not observed. In contrast, notably after short deviant tones the error rate was considerably increased in the middle-aged subjects. ERP measures after deviant stimuli elicited a sequence of mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a and reorienting negativity (RON). The latency and amplitude of the MMN did not differ between age groups indicating an unchanged deviance detection. However, the consecutive process of attention orientation (P3a) was delayed and the subsequent reorienting (RON) to the primary task was strongly attenuated in the middle-aged subjects. After short deviants the RON was virtually absent in the middle-aged subjects, which might account for the observed decline of accuracy.

Parsing the late positive complex: mental chronometry and the ERP components that inhabit the neighborhood of the P300

Falkenstein, Hohnsbein, and Hoorman (1994) suggested that common measures of P300 latency confound a "P-SR" component whose latency corresponds to stimulus evaluation time and a "P-CR" component whose latency varies with response-selection time, thus casting doubt on work in mental chronometry that relies on P300 latency. We report here a replication and extension of Falkenstein et al. (1994) using a high-density 129-electrode montage with 11 subjects. Spatiotemporal PCA was used to extract the components of the ERP. A centroid measure is also introduced for detecting waveform-timing changes beyond just peak latency. In terms of componentry, we argue that the P-SR and the P-CR, correspond to the P3a/Novelty P3 and the P300, respectively. Conceptually, we dispute the proposed distinction between stimulus evaluation and response selection. We suggest a four-stage ERP model of information processing and place the P3a and the P300 in this framework.

Long-term exposure to noise impairs cortical sound processing and attention control

Long-term exposure to noise impairs human health, causing pathological changes in the inner ear as well as other anatomical and physiological deficits. Numerous individuals are daily exposed to excessive noise. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the effects of noise on cortical function. Here we report data showing that long-term exposure to noise has a persistent effect on central auditory processing and leads to concurrent behavioral deficits. We found that speech-sound discrimination was impaired in noise-exposed individuals, as indicated by behavioral responses and the mismatch negativity brain response. Furthermore, irrelevant sounds increased the distractibility of the noise-exposed subjects, which was shown by increased interference in task performance and aberrant brain responses. These results demonstrate that long-term exposure to noise has long-lasting detrimental effects on central auditory processing and attention control.

The Neural Circuitry of Pre-attentive Auditory Change-detection: An fMRI Study of Pitch and Duration Mismatch Negativity generators

Electrophysiological studies have revealed a pre-attentive change-detection system in the auditory modality. This system emits a signal termed the mismatch negativity (MMN) when any detectable change in a regular pattern of auditory stimulation occurs. The precise intracranial sources underlying MMN generation, and in particular whether these vary as a function of the acoustic feature that changes, is a matter of some debate. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we show that anatomically distinct networks of auditory cortices are activated as a function of the deviating acoustic feature--in this case, tone frequency and tone duration--strongly supporting the hypothesis that MMN generators in auditory cortex are feature dependent. We also detail regions of the frontal and parietal cortices activated by change-detection processes. These regions also show feature dependence and we hypothesize that they reflect recruitment of attention-switching mechanisms.

Mismatch negativity potentials and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia

Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is an important predictor of clinical and social outcome. In this preliminary study, the correlation between cognitive status and deficits in mismatch negativity (MMN) generation was explored. The MMN response to tone duration deviants was recorded using a new stimulation protocol with continuously changing ('roving') standard stimuli in order to measure the effect of standard repetitions on MMN (memory trace effect). Cognitive status of the patient group (n=28) was assessed using neuropsychological screening. Healthy participants (n=20) served as age-matched comparison group. In patients, MMN amplitude in frontal electrodes as well as the MMN memory trace effect was diminished compared to controls. While both measures were inversely related to patient's age and disease severity, only the MMN memory trace effect was robustly correlated with the degree of neuropsychological impairment. This suggests that ERP measures of auditory system adaptability more appropriately characterise the pathophysiological processes underlying cognitive impairment in schizophrenia than static measures of ERP magnitude.

Ballistocardiogram artifact reduction in the simultaneous acquisition of auditory ERPS and fMRI

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are now being combined to analyze brain function. Confounding the EEG signal acquired in the MR environment is a ballistocardiogram artifact (BA), which is predominantly caused by cardiac-related body movement. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a method for reducing these MR-induced artifacts to retrieve small auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) from EEG recorded during fMRI. An algorithm for BA reduction was developed that relies on timing information obtained from simultaneous electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings and subsequent creation of an adaptive BA template. The BA template is formed by median-filtering 10 consecutive BA events in the EEG signal. The continuously updated template is then subtracted from each BA in the EEG. The auditory ERPs are obtained through signal averaging of the remaining EEG signal. Experimental and simulated ERP data were estimated to assess effectiveness of the BA reduction. Simulation showed that the algorithm reduced BA without significantly altering the morphology of a signal periodically inserted in the EEG. Auditory ERP data, obtained in a 1.5-T scanner during a passive auditory oddball paradigm and processed with the BA reduction algorithm, were comparable to data recorded in a mock scanner outside the magnetic field with the same experimental paradigm. It is concluded that through adequate reduction of the BA, relatively small auditory ERPs can be acquired in the MR environment.

Automatic attention to emotional stimuli: neural correlates

We investigated the capability of emotional and nonemotional visual stimulation to capture automatic attention, an aspect of the interaction between cognitive and emotional processes that has received scant attention from researchers. Event-related potentials were recorded from 37 subjects using a 60-electrode array, and were submitted to temporal and spatial principal component analyses to detect and quantify the main components, and to source localization software (LORETA) to determine their spatial origin. Stimuli capturing automatic attention were of three types: emotionally positive, emotionally negative, and nonemotional pictures. Results suggest that initially (P1: 105 msec after stimulus), automatic attention is captured by negative pictures, and not by positive or nonemotional ones. Later (P2: 180 msec), automatic attention remains captured by negative pictures, but also by positive ones. Finally (N2: 240 msec), attention is captured only by positive and nonemotional stimuli. Anatomically, this sequence is characterized by decreasing activation of the visual association cortex (VAC) and by the growing involvement, from dorsal to ventral areas, of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Analyses suggest that the ACC and not the VAC is responsible for experimental effects described above. Intensity, latency, and location of neural activity related to automatic attention thus depend clearly on the stimulus emotional content and on its associated biological importance.

Comparison of sensory gating to mismatch negativity and self-reported perceptual phenomena in healthy adults

To better understand the possible functional significance of electrophysiological sensory gating measures, response suppression of midlatency auditory event related potential (ERP) components was compared to the mismatch negativity (MMN) and to self-rated indices of stimulus filtering and passive attention-switching phenomena in an age-restricted sample of healthy adults. P1 sensory gating, measured during a paired-click paradigm, was correlated with MMN amplitude, measured during an acoustic oddball paradigm (intensity deviation). Also, individuals that exhibited less robust P1 suppression endorsed higher rates of "perceptual modulation" difficulties, whereas component N1 suppression was more closely related to "over-inclusion" of irrelevant sounds into the focus of attention. These findings suggest that the ERP components investigated are not redundant, but correspond to distinct-possibly related-pre-attentive processing systems.

P300 from inspiratory occlusion reflects orienting but not startle

Sudden onset inspiratory occlusion stimuli elicit large amplitude P300 components and also startle blinks. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the startle reflex on the respiratory related P300. A secondary purpose was to assess changes in P300 scalp topography as a function of stimulus familiarity. Young adults (n=12) were exposed to 200 inspiratory occlusion stimuli, and EEG was recorded from 29 A1/A2 referenced sites. Data from the occlusions were divided into four consecutive blocks of 50 trials to assess blink and P300 habituation effects. Results showed that 40% of the occlusion stimuli elicited a blink response, and that blink amplitude showed significant habituation across the experimental session. Change in P300 amplitude across the experimental session varied according to scalp site. At central and parietal locations, P300 amplitude showed an initial decrease but then remained stable. Frontally, P300 amplitude decreased over each of the four trial blocks. P300 scalp topography showed a classic centro-parietal maximum, however, a more frontally orientated scalp focus was seen for the first trial block. P300 was not significantly different when derived from averages of responses containing and not containing blinks. These data indicate that the previously studied centro-parietal P300 is not related to a startle reflex. However, when occlusions are first presented, a scalp topography similar to that previously noted for novel stimuli is observed.

Frequency discrimination at different frequency levels as indexed by electrophysiological and behavioral measures

The present study systematically compared the neural and behavioral accuracy of discriminating a frequency change ("deviant") in a repetitive tone ("standard") across a frequency range of 250-4000 Hz. The sound structure (pure sinusoidal vs. harmonically rich tones) and the magnitude of frequency change (2.5%, 5%, 10%, 20%) were also varied. The accuracy of neural frequency-change detector was determined by comparing the auditory event-related potentials (ERP) elicited by deviant and standard stimuli in the absence of attention. In a separate behavioral task, subjects were to indicate when they noticed a frequency change. The ranges of the across-subject means of ERP parameters across the conditions were: the mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude -0.9 to -4.9 microV, latency 125-218 ms, the P3a amplitude 0.3-3.2 microV, latency 239-304 ms. The ERP latency was shortest for the standard-stimulus frequency from 1000 to 2000 Hz suggesting that automatic frequency discrimination was the most accurate in that range. The ERP latencies and amplitudes correlated with the hit rate (HR) and reaction time (RT), with highest correlation found between the MMN amplitude and the HR (r=0.8). The harmonical tones elicited MMN and P3a with shorter latencies and larger amplitudes, than did pure sinusoidal tones in all frequency bands. The results may have implication to pitch-perception theories.

Attentional modulation of human auditory cortex

Attention powerfully influences auditory perception, but little is understood about the mechanisms whereby attention sharpens responses to unattended sounds. We used high-resolution surface mapping techniques (using functional magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI) to examine activity in human auditory cortex during an intermodal selective attention task. Stimulus-dependent activations (SDAs), evoked by unattended sounds during demanding visual tasks, were maximal over mesial auditory cortex. They were tuned to sound frequency and location, and showed rapid adaptation to repeated sounds. Attention-related modulations (ARMs) were isolated as response enhancements that occurred when subjects performed pitch-discrimination tasks. In contrast to SDAs, ARMs were localized to lateral auditory cortex, showed broad frequency and location tuning, and increased in amplitude with sound repetition. The results suggest a functional dichotomy of auditory cortical fields: stimulus-determined mesial fields that faithfully transmit acoustic information, and attentionally labile lateral fields that analyze acoustic features of behaviorally relevant sounds.

The N1 hypothesis and irrelevant sound: evidence from token set size effects

This study investigated how increases in the number of different types of sound (token set size) within a heard but ignored sequence influence brain activity and performance in a serial recall task (the irrelevant sound effect). We tested the hypothesis that brain processes affected by the refractory state of the neuronal populations involved in generating the auditory N1 play a role in the memory disruption produced by irrelevant sound. Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded when volunteers performed a serial recall task that required remembering lists of visually presented numbers that were followed by a distractor-filled retention interval. The results showed that both increments in set size from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 5 elicited an increase of the N1 amplitude. Furthermore, increases in set size from 2 to 5, but not from 1 to 2, caused a significant decrease of the serial recall performance. This result suggested that, if N1 were to play a role in the disruption produced by irrelevant sound, the processes underlying the N1 wave may only serve as a necessary rather than a sufficient condition for disruption.

Rhythmic context influences the auditory evoked potentials of musicians and nonmusicians

In this study, we investigated how rhythms are processed in the brain by measuring both behaviourally obtained ratings and auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) from the EEG. We presented probe beats on seven positions within a test bar. Two bars of either a duple- or triple meter rhythm preceded probe beats. We hypothesised that sequential processing would lead to meter effects at the 1/3 and 1/2bar positions, whereas hierarchical processing would lead to context effects on the 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3bar positions. We found that metric contexts affected behavioural ratings. This effect was more pronounced for rhythmic experts. In addition, both the AEP P3a and P3b component could be identified. Though metric context affected the P3a amplitudes, group effects were less clear. We found that the AEP P3a component is sensitive to violation of temporal expectancies. In addition, behavioural data and P3a correlation coefficients (CCs) suggest that temporal patterns are processed sequentially in nonmusicians but are processed in a hierarchical way in rhythmic experts.

Auditory event-related potential indices of increased distractibility in children with major depression

OBJECTIVE

Children with major depression (MD) exhibit short-term memory and concentration deficits. Using auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), we aimed to determine whether these problems could be caused by a dysfunction in auditory sensory memory, attentional orienting, or both.

METHODS

The subjects were 10 treatment-naïve children with MD and 10 controls. Sound sequences, consisting of frequent stimuli (syllable /ka/, P = 0.08), infrequent deviant stimuli (/ta/, P = 0.01 ), and novel sounds ( P = 0.01 ) were played through loudspeakers while the children watched silent videos and ignored the sound stimuli. Auditory sensory memory was studied by eliciting the ERPs mismatch negativity (MMN) and late discriminative negativity (LDN), and the P3a was used as an index of involuntary attention switch.

RESULTS

The children with MD had shorter MMN and LDN latencies than the controls. The late component of the P3a (lP3a) was enhanced in amplitude in the patients as compared with that in the controls.

CONCLUSIONS

Auditory sensory memory appears to function normally in children with MD. However, the ERP findings indicated enhanced sensory sensitivity and attentional distractibility in these children. This increased distractibility might underlie the concentration difficulties that compromise school performance in children with MD.

Acoustic noise concerns in functional magnetic resonance imaging

Magnetic resonance (MR) acoustic scanner noise may negatively affect the performance of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a problem that worsens at the higher field strengths proposed to enhance fMRI. We present an overview of the current knowledge on the effects of confounding acoustic MR noise in fMRI experiments. The principles and effectiveness of various methods to reduce acoustic noise in fMRI are discussed, practical considerations are addressed and recommendations are made.
