Abstract
Given the continuous and excessive CO2 emission into the atmosphere from anthropomorphic activities, there is now a growing demand for negative carbon emission technologies, which requires efficient capture and conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals. This review highlights recent advances in CO2 capture and conversion chemistry and processes. It first summarizes various adsorbent materials that have been developed for CO2 capture, including hydroxide-, amine-, and metal organic framework-based adsorbents. It then reviews recent efforts devoted to two types of CO2 conversion reaction: thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation and electrochemical CO2 reduction. While thermal hydrogenation reactions are often accomplished in the presence of H2, electrochemical reactions are realized by direct use of electricity that can be renewably generated from solar and wind power. The key to the success of these reactions is to develop efficient catalysts and to rationally engineer the catalyst-electrolyte interfaces. The review further covers recent studies in integrating CO2 capture and conversion processes so that energy efficiency for the overall CO2 capture and conversion can be optimized. Lastly, the review briefs some new approaches and future directions of coupling direct air capture and CO2 conversion technologies as solutions to negative carbon emission and energy sustainability.

Abstract
Lewis-acid/base adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene cAACMe (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with selected lead(II) and lead(IV) compounds are presented. The reaction of the NHCs Me2ImMe (1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), iPr2ImMe (1,3-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), Dipp2Im (1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) and cAACMe (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with PbI2 yielded the NHC-containing plumbylenes NHC·PbI2 (NHC = Me2ImMe (1), iPr2ImMe (2), Dipp2Im (3) and cAACMe·PbI2 (4)). Using the Pb(IV) compound PbCl2Ph2, the plumbane adducts NHC·PbCl2Ph2 (NHC = Me2ImMe (5), iPr2ImMe (6), Dipp2Im (7)) and cAACMe·PbCl2Ph2 (8)) were isolated in high yields. Reduction of the lead(IV) adducts 5 and 6 with excess KC8 afforded the diaryl substituted plumbylenes Me2ImMe·PbPh2 (9) and iPr2ImMe·PbPh2 (10), which are stable in the solid state but decompose in solution.

Abstract
Herein, we describe an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed deconstructive isomerization of azetidinols via an inert C-C bond cleavage. It provides a direct and supplementary pathway to access α-amino ketone and oxazol-2-one derivatives in moderate to good yields. DFT calculation supports the proposed mechanism in which NHC undergoes a concerted proton transfer and ring-opening process. This reaction features non-metal catalysis, simple reaction operation, excellent regioselectivity and gram-scale synthesis.

Abstract
Xanthines, such as caffeine and theophylline, are abundant natural products that are often present in foods. Leveraging renewable and benign resources for ligand design in organometallic chemistry and catalysis is one of the major missions of green and sustainable chemistry. In this Special Issue on Sustainable Organometallic Chemistry, we report the first nickel-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes derived from Xanthines. Well-defined, air- and moisture-stable, half-sandwich, cyclopentadienyl [CpNi(NHC)I] nickel-NHC complexes are prepared from the natural products caffeine and theophylline. The model complex has been characterized by x-ray crystallography. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties is presented. High activity in the model Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling is demonstrated. The data show that nickel-N-heterocyclic carbenes derived from both Earth abundant 3d transition metal and renewable natural products represent a sustainable alternative to the classical imidazol-2-ylidenes.

Abstract
Tuning the surface-embellishing ligands of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is a powerful strategy to modulate their morphology and surface electronic and functional features, impacting their catalytic activity and selectivity. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of a polytriazolium organic cage PIC-T, capable of stabilizing PdNPs within its discrete cavity. The obtained material (denoted Pd@PCC-T) is highly durable and monodispersed with narrow particle-size distribution of 2.06 ± 0.02 nm, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance and recyclability in the Sonogashira coupling and tandem reaction to synthesize benzofuran derivatives. Further investigation indicates that the modulation of N-heterocyclic carbene sites embedded in the organic cage has an impact on NPs' catalytic efficiency, thus providing a novel methodology to design superior NP catalysts.

Abstract
Boron chemistry has experienced tremendous progress in the last few decades, resulting in the isolation of a variety of compounds with remarkable electronic structures and properties. Some examples are the singly Lewis-base-stabilised borylenes, wherein boron has a formal oxidation state of +I, and their dimers featuring a boron-boron double bond, namely diborenes. However, no evidence of a Wanzlick-type equilibrium between borylenes and diborenes, which would open a valuable route to the latter compounds, has been found. In this work, we combine DFT, coupled-cluster, multireference methods, and natural bond orbital/natural resonance theory analyses to investigate the electronic, structural, and kinetic factors controlling the reactivity of the transient CAAC-stabilised cyanoborylene, which spontaneously cyclotetramerises into a butterfly-type, twelve-membered (BCN)4 ring, and the reasons why its dimerisation through the boron atoms is hampered. The computations are also extended to the NHC-stabilised borylene counterparts. We reveal that the borylene ground state multiplicity dictates the preference for self-stabilising cyclooligomerisation over boron-boron dimerisation. Our comparison between NHC- vs. CAAC-stabilised borylenes provides a convincing rationale for why the reduction of the former always gives diborenes while a range of other products is found for the latter. Our findings provide a theoretical background for the rational design of base-stabilised borylenes, which could pave the way for novel synthetic routes to diborenes or alternatively non-dimerising systems for small-molecule activation.

Abstract
Over the last 20 years, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a dominant direction in ligand development in transition metal catalysis. In particular, strong σ-donation in combination with tunable steric environment make NHCs to be among the most common ligands used for C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation. Herein, we report the study on steric and electronic properties of thiazol-2-ylidenes. We demonstrate that the thiazole heterocycle and enhanced π-electrophilicity result in a class of highly active carbene ligands for electrophilic cyclization reactions to form valuable oxazoline heterocycles. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties as well as structural characterization and coordination chemistry is presented. This mode of catalysis can be applied to late-stage drug functionalization to furnish attractive building blocks for medicinal chemistry. Considering the key role of N-heterocyclic ligands, we anticipate that N-aryl thiazol-2-ylidenes will be of broad interest as ligands in modern chemical synthesis.

Abstract
A range of carbene structures and their adducts with one another and with a selection of small-molecule electrophiles and nucleophiles were examined at the composite correlated molecular orbital theory G3MP2 level to explore ground-state "carbenic" structures, their stabilities, and reactivities. Differences between carbene general classification as a singlet electrophilic carbene or singlet nucleophilic carbene and their given reactivity are discussed. A key quantity is the carbon-carbon bond dissociation energy for carbene dimers or the carbene-adduct dissociation energy for other species. The carbene dimer bond dissociation energies span a wide range from 10 to 170 kcal/mol. The hydrogenation energies and singlet-triplet splitting were found to correlate best with the carbene's self-dimerization energy, whereas other descriptors do not. The proton and fluoride affinities of the carbenes alone prove inadequate for classifying reactivity among classes of carbenes. The self-dimerization bond dissociation energy, hydrogenation energy, and singlet-triplet splitting of various carbenes, despite sometimes large differences in proton affinity and other indicators of reactivity, provide usable metrics to correlate substantial amounts of thermodynamic and kinetic (reactivity) information regarding these structures.

Abstract
An NHC-catalyzed [2 + 4] cyclization of alkynyl ester with α,β-unsaturated ketone to form a pyran scaffold was developed successfully. The cheap and easily available starting materials, mild reaction conditions, moderate to excellent yields, and high atom economy make this strategy attractive for the syntheses of highly substituted 4H-pyran derivatives.

Abstract
Considering the ubiquitous nature and ready synthesis of amides, and the great significance of organofluorine-containing species, the cross-coupling of amides and polyfluoroarenes, leading to new carbon-carbon bond-forming methodologies, would find useful applications in synthesis, late-stage functionalization, and rapid generation of molecular diversity. Herein, we present a novel synthesis of α-polyfluoroaryl amines via Sm/SmI2 -mediated deoxygenative cross-coupling of aromatic amides with polyfluoroarenes through direct C-H functionalization. The structural and functional diversity of these readily available precursors provides a versatile and flexible strategy for the streamlined synthesis of α-polyfluoroaryl amines. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, a novel plausible mechanism of the α-aminocarbene-mediated C-H insertion has been revealed, which may stimulate future work for the development of novel methods in amine synthesis.

Abstract
![]()
Although highly selective
complexes for the cross-metathesis of
olefins, particularly oriented toward the productive metathesis of Z-olefins, have been reported in recent years, there is
a constant need to design and prepare new and improved catalysts for
this challenging reaction. In this work, guided by density functional
theory (DFT) calculations, the performance of a Ru-based catalyst
chelated to a sulfurated pincer in the olefin metathesis was computationally
assessed. The catalyst was designed based on the Hoveyda–Grubbs
catalyst (SIMes)Cl2Ru(=CH–o–OiPrC6H4) through the substitution
of chlorides with the chelator bis(2-mercaptoimidazolyl)methane. The
obtained thermodynamic and kinetic data of the initiation phase through
side- and bottom-bound mechanisms suggest that this system is a versatile
catalyst for olefin metathesis, as DFT predicts the highest energy
barrier of the catalytic cycle of ca. 20 kcal/mol, which is comparable
to those corresponding to the Hoveyda–Grubbs-type catalysts.
Moreover, in terms of the stereoselectivity evaluated through the
propagation phase in the metathesis of propene–propene to 2-butene,
our study reveals that the Z isomer can be formed
under a kinetic control. We believe that this is an interesting outcome
in the context of future exploration of Ru-based catalysts with sulfurated
chelates in the search for high stereoselectivity in selected reactions.

Abstract
The chiral ruthenium(ii)bis-SINpEt complex is a versatile and powerful catalyst for the hydrogenation of a broad range of heteroarenes. This study aims to provide understanding of the active form of this privileged catalyst as well as the reaction mechanism, and to identify the factors which control enantioselectivity. To this end we used computational methods and in situ NMR spectroscopy to study the hydrogenation of 2-methylbenzofuran promoted by this system. The high flexibility and conformational freedom of the carbene ligands in this complex lead to the formation of a chiral pocket interacting with the substrate in a "lock-and-key" fashion. The non-covalent stabilization of the substrate in this particular pocket is an exclusive feature of the major enantiomeric pathway and is preserved throughout the mechanism. Substrate coordination leading to the minor enantiomer inside this pocket is inhibited by steric repulsion. Rather, the catalyst exhibits a "flat" interaction surface with the substrate in the minor enantiomer pathway. We probe this concept by computing transition states of the rate determining step of this reaction for a series of different substrates. Our findings open up a new approach for the rational design of chiral catalysts.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have established themselves as a popular class of compounds over the past decade. Primary reasons for this popularity are their modular synthesis and their strong donor properties. While such MICs have mostly been used in combination with transition metals, the past few years have also seen their utility together with main group elements. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments on this class of compounds that include, among others, (i) cationic and anionic MIC ligands, (ii) the donor/acceptor properties of these ligands with a focus on the several methods that are known for estimating such donor/acceptor properties, (iii) a detailed overview of 3d metal complexes and main group compounds with these MIC ligands, (iv) results on the redox and photophysical properties of compounds based on MIC ligands, and (v) an overview on electrocatalysis, redox-switchable catalysis, and small-molecule activation to highlight the applications of compounds based on MIC ligands in contemporary chemistry. By discussing several aspects from the synthetic, spectroscopic, and application point of view of these classes of compounds, we highlight the state of the art of compounds containing MICs and present a perspective for future research in this field.

Abstract
A new strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene metal complexes is reported using {Mo(η3-C4H7)(bipy)(CO)2} or {Re(bipy)(CO)3} fragments as substituents at the triazole N3 atom. The reaction of cationic molybdenum(II) and rhenium(I) 1-methyl-1,2,3-triazole compounds with the strong base KN(SiMe3)2 in the presence of electrophilic metal fragments, such as AgOTf (OTf = trifluoromethanesufonate) or [CuCl(IPr)] [IPr = 2,6-(diisopropyl)phenylimidazol-2-ylidene] affords a new type of 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene complexes. For silver(I) cationic bis(triazolylidene), [Ag(tzNHCM)2]OTf (M = [Mo], 2; [Re], 4), complexes are obtained, whereas in the case of Cu(I) mixed normal/mesoionic NHC, [Cu(IPr)(tzNHCM)]OTf (M = [Mo], 7; [Re], 8) complexes are formed. This special type of mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbenes bear a metal fragment at the N3 atom of the 1,2,3-triazole moiety, showing notable enhancement of the carbene electron donor ability compared to conventional alkyl-substituted analogues. Transmetalation from cationic silver bis(triazolylidene) complexes 2 and 4, prepared using this methodology, has proven to be very efficient toward [M'Cl(cod)]2 (M' = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene), affording the corresponding cationic bis(triazolylidene) [M'(cod)(tzNHCM)2]OTf (9-12) complexes. A subsequent reaction with CO(g) easily produces substitution of the diene ligand, affording the corresponding cis-dicarbonyl [M'(CO)2(tzNHCM)2]OTf (13-16) compounds.

Abstract
The covalent bond classification (CBC) method represents a molecule as MLlXxZz by evaluating the total number of L, X and Z functions interacting with M. The CBC method is a simplistic approach that is based on the notion that the bonding of a ligating atom (or group of atoms) can be expressed in terms of the number of electrons it contributes to a 2-electron bond. In many cases, the bonding in a molecule of interest can be described in terms of a 2-center 2-electron bonding model and the MLlXxZz classification can be derived straightforwardly by considering each ligand independently. However, the bonding within a molecule cannot always be described satisfactorily by using a 2-center 2-electron model and, in such situations, the MLlXxZz classification requires a more detailed consideration than one in which each ligand is treated in an independent manner. The purpose of this article is to provide examples of how the MLlXxZz classification is obtained in the presence of multicenter bonding interactions. Specific emphasis is given to the treatment of multiple π-acceptor ligands and the impact on the vn configuration, i.e. the number of formally nonbonding electrons on an element of interest.

Abstract
We report herein the synthesis, characterization, and coordination chemistry of a free N-aluminylene, namely a carbazolylaluminylene 2 b. This species is prepared via a reduction reaction of the corresponding carbazolyl aluminium diiodide. The coordination behavior of 2 b towards transition metal centers (W, Cr) is shown to afford a series of novel aluminylene complexes 3-6 with diverse coordination modes. We demonstrate that the tri-active ambiphilic Al center in 2 b can behave as: 1. a σ-donating and doubly π-accepting ligand; 2. a σ-donating, σ-accepting and π-accepting ligand; and 3. a σ-donating and doubly σ-accepting ligand. Additionally, we show ligand exchange at the aluminylene center providing access to the modulation of electronic properties of transition metals without changing the coordinated atoms. Investigations of 2 b with IDippCuCl (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) show an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation leading to a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of such complexes and the mechanism of the aluminylene-alumanyl transformation are investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
A new bifunctional ligand bearing chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and prolinol moieties is presented. Utilizing the designed ligand, an in situ formed Cu/Zn hetero-bimetallic complex unlocks the asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions of allyl phosphates with zinc keto-homoenolates, leading to the formation of various γ-vinyl ketones with good regio- and enantio-selectivity. DF sT calculation supports that the chelation of allyl phosphates with catalyst promotes the SN 2' addition and the ligand-substrate steric interactions account for the stereoselective outcome.

Abstract
Though N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as diverse and powerful discrete functional molecules in pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, and catalysis over decades, the heterogenization of NHCs and their precursors for broader applications in porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), and porous organometallic cages (POMCs) was not extensively studied until the last ten years. By de novo or post-synthetic modification (PSM) methods, myriads of NHCs and their precursors containing building blocks were designed and integrated into MOFs, PCPs, COFs, POPs and POMCs to form various structures and porosities. Functionalisation with NHCs and their precursors significantly expands the scope of the potential applications of porous materials by tuning the pore surface chemical/physical properties, providing active sites for binding guest molecules and substrates and realizing recyclability. In this review, we summarise and discuss the recent progress on the synthetic methods, structural features, and promising applications of NHCs and their precursors in functionalised porous materials. At the end, a brief perspective on the encouraging future prospects and challenges in this contemporary field is presented. This review will serve as a guide for researchers to design and synthesize more novel porous materials functionalised with NHCs and their precursors.

Abstract
The structure and the reactivity of four half-sandwich metal complexes of RuII, OsII, RhIII, and IrIII were investigated by means of density functional theory approaches. These piano-stool complexes, grouped in cym-bound complexes, RuII(cym)(dmb)Cl2, 1, and OsII(cym)(dmb)Cl2, 2, and Cp*-bound complexes, RhIII(Cp*)(dmb)Cl2, 3, and IrIII(Cp*)(dmb)Cl2, 4, with cym = η6-p-cymene, Cp* = η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, and dmb = 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene, were recently proposed as anticancer metallodrugs that preferably target Cys- or Sec-containing proteins. Thus, density functional theory calculations were performed here to characterize in detail the thermodynamics and the kinetics underlining the targeting of these metallodrugs at either neutral or anionic Cys and Sec side chains. Calculations evidenced that all these complexes preferably target at Cys or Sec via chloro exchange, although cym-bound and Cp*-bound complexes resulted to be more prone to bind at neutral or anionic forms, respectively, of these soft protein sites. Further decomposition analyses of the activation free energies for the reaction between 1-4 complexes and either Cys or Sec, paralleled with the comparison among the optimized transition-state structures, allowed us to spotlight the significant role played by solvation in determining the overall reactivity and selectivity expected for these prototypical metallodrugs.

Abstract
Ground state singlet carbenes commonly feature σ2π0 orbital occupations and are known for their concerted σ-bond insertion and cycloaddition reactions. Despite the facility of these transformations, orbital symmetry conservation forces them into non-least-motion π-approach reaction pathways. This situation completely changes when the singlet σ0π2 electron configuration becomes the ground state, which we show here by means of high-level CCSD(T) geometry optimizations. Carbenes like the experimentally known 2H-imidazol-2-ylidene react with H2 and ethylene with negligible or no barrier in a σ-fashion, which effectively corresponds to a least-motion reaction trajectory.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of [(NHC)PdCl2(aniline)] complexes. These well-defined, air- and moisture-stable catalysts are highly active in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides by N-C(O) activation as well as in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of esters, aryl chlorides, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination. Most crucially, this study introduces broadly available anilines as stabilizing ligands for well-defined Pd(II)-NHC catalysts. The availability of various aniline scaffolds, including structural and electronic diversity, has a significant potential in fine-tuning of challenging cross-couplings by Pd-NHCs. The parent catalyst in this class, [Pd(IPr)(AN)Cl2], has been commercialized in collaboration with Millipore Sigma, offering broad access for reaction screening and optimization.

Abstract
Alkylidene ketenes typically display high intrinsic reactivity, impeding isolation on a preparative scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of alkylidene ketenes by reaction of imidazole-based diazoolefins with carbon monoxide. The good thermal stability of these heterocumulenes allows for characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction. N-Heterocyclic alkylidene ketenes can be used as C-donor ligands for transition and main group metals, as evidenced by the isolation of complexes with AuCl, RhCl(CO)2, PdCl(C3H5) and GaCl3.

Abstract
Oxidation of the half-sandwich MnI complexes Cp(CO)2Mn(NHC) bearing dialkyl-, arylalkyl- and diarylsubstituted N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC = IMe, IMeMes, IMes) affords the corresponding stable MnII radical cations [Cp(CO)2Mn(NHC)](BF4) isolated in 92-95% yield. Systematic X-ray diffraction studies of the series of MnI and MnII NHC complexes revealed the expected characteristic structural changes upon oxidation, namely the elongation of the Mn-CO and Mn-NHC bonds as well as the diminution of the OC-Mn-CO angle. ESR spectra of [Cp(CO)2Mn(IMes)](BF4) in frozen solution (CH2Cl2/toluene 1 : 1, 70 K) allowed the identification of two conformers for this complex and their structural assignment using DFT calculations. The stability of these NHC complexes in both metal oxidation states, moderate oxidation potentials and the ease of detection of MnII species by a variety of spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, IR, paramagnetic 1H NMR, and ESR) make these compounds promising objects for applications as redox-active organometallic fragments.
