Assessing trihalomethanes (THMs) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation potentials in drinking water treatment plants using fluorescence spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis

Fluorescence spectroscopy for assessing trihalomethane precursors removal by MIEX resin

This study investigated the applicability of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMS) to assess total trihalomethane formation potentials (TTHMFPs) and the ability of magnetic ion exchange (MIEX^®) resin to reduce TTHMFP. We treated a surface water and secondary wastewater effluent with MIEX mimicking full-scale operation by repeatedly exposing the same resin batch to additional feed water, with batches ranging from 500 to 5,000 resin bed volumes. Results showed that MIEX was more effective at removing or reducing ultraviolet absorbance (UVA₂₅₄), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and TTHMFP in surface water than in secondary effluent. The greater UVA₂₅₄, DOC and TTHMFP removal for surface waters was explained by the stronger affinity of MIEX for terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) compared to microbial DOM. Fluorescence EEMS results showed that the ratio between terrestrial and microbial fluorescent signals of DOM was significantly greater in surface water than in secondary effluent. Fluorescence surrogate parameters were strongly correlated with TTHMFP, namely, fluorescence intensity of humic-like peak C (R² = 0.98, p < 0.01), protein-like peak T (R² = 0.96, p < 0.01), and fulvic-like peak A (R² = 0.87, p < 0.01). Correlations between fluorescence surrogate parameters and TTHMFP were substantially stronger than correlations between DOC and TTHMFP. Overall, the results indicate that fluorescent parameters extracted from EEMS data can be used as quick surrogate parameters to monitor TTHMFP for a diverse group of raw and MIEX-treated waters.

Selective removal of dissolved organic matter affects the production and speciation of disinfection byproducts

The heterogeneity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural and human impacted waters and the variety of drinking water treatment processes employed has made a mechanistic understanding of disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation challenging. In this study, we examined the formation of the regulated DBPs (Trichloromethanes, THM, and Haloacetic acids, HAA) during full-scale water treatment operations both with prechlorination treatment (normal operations for the drinking water plant) and without (altered operations); followed by coagulation, flocculation, filtration, and chlorination. The source water DOM concentration ranged 6.4 to 7.3 mg-C/L. DOM composition was moderately humic and degraded with a mix of microbial- and terrestrial-like characteristics. Removal of raw water prechlorination caused an average reduction in total THM and HAA concentrations of 52.7% and 40.0%, respectively, with the greater reduction noted for chlorinated-DBPs rather than brominated-DBPs. Prechlorination treatment resulted in a higher relative production of Cl₃CH and BrCl₂CH associated with aromatic, humic, and terrestrial-like DOM. Without prechlorination, the DBP pool had higher proportions of brominated-DBPs (Br₃CH, Br₂ClCH, Br₂CHCOOH, BrClCHCOOH, and BrCH₂COOH) associated with microbial-like, processed humic-like, and protein-like DOM. These observed patterns could not be explained by chloride demand and DOM concentration, indicating that DOM composition played an important role in DBP formation.

Removal of wastewater and polymer derived N-nitrosodimethylamine precursors with integrated use of chlorine and chlorine dioxide

In this study, the effects of five different pre-oxidation scenarios (i.e., individual, simultaneous, and sequential applications of chlorine dioxide [ClO₂] and chlorine [Cl₂]) on the removal of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation potential (FP) from different water matrices (i.e., non-impacted natural waters, wastewater [WW]-impacted, and polymer-impacted waters) with subsequent chloramination were investigated. Practically relevant doses of ClO₂ and Cl₂ were applied for all scenarios to avoid the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) at regulatory levels. The removal efficiency of NDMA FP for all the oxidation scenarios (individual or simultaneous) was <20% in non-impacted natural water samples. In 20% WW-impacted waters, pre-oxidation with ClO₂ at pH 7.8 resulted in a significant reduction in NDMA FP (56-73%), whereas pre-oxidation with Cl₂ showed less removals (40-50%). For the integrated oxidation scenarios (i.e., simultaneous or sequential application), NDMA FP removals further increased (20-45%), especially, at pH 6.0 compared to individual application of oxidants in WW-impacted waters. The formation of NDMA in pre-oxidized water samples also decreased significantly under uniform formation condition (UFC). In polymer-impacted waters, integrated applications of Cl₂ and ClO₂ significantly improved the deactivation of polymer-derived NDMA precursors independent of oxidation time (10 vs. 60 min) and pH (6.0 vs. 7.8) compared to individual application of these oxidants. In addition, chlorite (ClO₂^-) formation was low and maintained well below 1 mg/L for integrated applications of Cl₂ and ClO₂, while chlorate (ClO₃^-) formation increased significantly as compared to application of ClO₂ only.

The Combination of Coagulation and Adsorption for Controlling Ultra-Filtration Membrane Fouling in Water Treatment

Ultra-filtration technology has been increasingly used in drinking water treatment due to improvements in membrane performance and lowering of costs. However, membrane fouling is the main limitation in the application of ultra-filtration technology. In this study, we investigated the impact of four different pre-treatments: Coagulation, adsorption, coagulation followed by adsorption (C-A), and simultaneous coagulation and adsorption (C+A), on membrane fouling and natural organic matter removal efficiency. The results showed that adsorption process required a large amount of adsorbent and formed a dense cake layer on the membrane surface leading to severe membrane fouling. Compared to adsorption alone, the coagulation and C-A processes decreased the transmembrane pressure by 4.9 kPa. It was due to less accumulation of particles on the membrane surface. As for water quality, the C-A ultra-filtration process achieved the highest removal efficiencies of natural organic matter and disinfection by-product precursors. Therefore, the addition of adsorbent after coagulation is a potentially important approach for alleviating ultra-filtration membrane fouling and enhancing treatment performance.

Dynamic variations in dissolved organic matter and the precursors of disinfection by-products leached from biochars: Leaching experiments simulating intermittent rain events

Biochar-leached dissolved organic matter may have a substantial impact on the water quality of receiving water surrounded by biochar-amended fields. In this study, we tracked variations in the spectroscopic characteristics and the disinfection by-products formation potentials of dissolved organic matter (DOM) leached during sequential extraction for three different biochars (BCs), which simulates DOM from BC-amended fields during intermittent rain events. The optical properties of DOM were more dependent on the BC types with different origins (sludge, corn, and rice) rather than on the extraction time. A large amount of DOM was released during the initial period of the extraction (1 day), which was equivalent to 52-60% of the total cumulative organic carbon during 17 days of extraction. The relative contribution of the initial extraction to the total cumulative amounts was greater for the formation potential of trihalomethanes (THMs) per BC (71-82%) compared to those of haloacetic acids (HAAs) or dissolved organic carbon (DOC), suggesting that the leaching behaviors of disinfection byproducts (DBP) precursors from BCs may be different from those of DOC (i.e., bulk DOM). Among the three BCs, corn BC-derived DOM exhibited the highest formation potentials of THMs and HAAs per BC for both the initial and the total cumulative extraction. The specific (or DOC-normalized) THMs formation potential was positively correlated with the ratios of terrestrial humic-like to fulvic-like components, implying condensed aromatic structures could operate as a surrogate for THMs formation of BC-derived DOM. This study provided insight into dynamic leaching behaviors of DOM from BCs and the formation potentials for THMs and HAAs in BC-amended fields under intermittent rainfall.

Impacts of aeration management and polylactic acid addition on dissolved organic matter characteristics in intensified aquaponic systems

Aquaponics as a potential alternative for conventional aquaculture industry has increasingly attracted worldwide attention in recent years. However, the sustainable application of aquaponics is facing a growing challenge. In particular, there is a pressing need to better understand and control the accumulation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquaponics with the aim of optimizing nitrogen utilization efficiency. This study was aiming for assessing the characteristics of DOM in the culture water and the relationship with the nitrogen transformations in different intensified aquaponic systems with hydroponic aeration supplement and polylactic acid (PLA) addition. Two enhancing attempts altered the quantity of DOM in aquaponic systems significantly with a varying DOM content of 21.98-45.65 mg/L. The DOM could be represented by four identified fluorescence components including three humic -like materials (83-86%) and one tryptophan-like substance (14-17%). The fluorescence intensities of humic acid-like components were decreased significantly after the application of intensifying strategies, which indicating that two enhancing attempts possibly affected humic acid-like fluorescence. Variation of optical indices also suggested the reductions of water DOM which could be impacted by the enhancing nitrogen treatment processes. These findings will benefit the potential applications and sustainable operation of these strategies in aquaponics.

Effects of phosphate-enhanced ozone/biofiltration on formation of disinfection byproducts and occurrence of opportunistic pathogens in drinking water distribution systems

The effects of ozone-biologically activated carbon (O₃-BAC) treatment with various phosphate doses (0, 0.3 or 0.6 mg/L) were investigated on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and occurrence of opportunistic pathogens (OPs) in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) simulated by annular reactors (ARs). It was found that the lowest DBPs and the highest inactivation of OPs such as Mycobacterium spp., Mycobacterium avium, Aeromonas spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Hartmanella vermiformis, occurred in the effluent of the AR with 0.6 mg/L phosphate addition. Based on the results of different characterization techniques, for the AR with 0.6 mg/L phosphate-enhanced O₃-BAC treatment, dissolved organic carbon in the influent exhibited the lowest concentration and most stable fraction due to the improved biodegradation effect. Moreover, the total amount of suspended extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the bulk water of the AR decreased greatly, resulting in the lowest chlorine consumption and DBPs formation in the AR. In Fourier transform infrared spectra of the suspended EPS, the amide II band (1600-1500 cm^-1) disappeared and the protein/polysaccharide ratio decreased remarkably, indicating the destruction of protein and a decrease in hydrophobicity. Moreover, β-sheets and α-helices in the protein secondary structures were degraded while the random coils increased sharply as phosphate addition increased to 0.6 mg/L, inhibiting microbial aggregation and hence weakening the chlorine-resistance capability. Thus, most of the OPs in suspended biofilms were more easily inactivated by residual chlorine, resulting in the lowest OPs occurrence in the effluent of the AR. Our findings indicated that enhancing the efficiency of the BAC filter by adding phosphate is a promising method for improving water quality in DWDSs.

Online fluorescence spectroscopy for the real-time evaluation of the microbial quality of drinking water

We assessed the utility of online fluorescence spectroscopy for the real-time evaluation of the microbial quality of untreated drinking water. Online fluorimeters were installed on the raw water intake at four groundwater-derived UK public water supplies alongside existing turbidity sensors that are used to forewarn of the presence of microbial contamination in the water industry. The fluorimeters targeted fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM) peaks at excitation/emission wavelengths of 280/365 nm (tryptophan-like fluorescence, TLF) and 280/450 nm (humic-like fluorescence, HLF). Discrete samples were collected for Escherichia coli, total bacterial cell counts by flow cytometry, and laboratory-based fluorescence and absorbance. Both TLF and HLF were strongly correlated with E. coli (ρ = 0.71-0.77) and total bacterial cell concentrations (ρ = 0.73-0.76), whereas the correlations between turbidity and E. coli (ρ = 0.48) and total bacterial cell counts (ρ = 0.40) were much weaker. No clear TLF peak was observed at the sites and all apparent TLF was considered to be optical bleed-through from the neighbouring HLF peak. Therefore, a HLF fluorimeter alone would be sufficient to evaluate the microbial water quality at these sources. Fluorescent DOM was also influenced by site operations such as pump start-up and the precipitation of cations on the sensor windows. Online fluorescent DOM sensors are a better indicator of the microbial quality of untreated drinking water than turbidity and they have wide-ranging potential applications within the water industry.

National scale assessment of total trihalomethanes in Irish drinking water

Ireland reported the highest non-compliance with respect to total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in drinking water across the 27 European Union Member States for the year 2010. We carried out a GIS-based investigation of the links between geographical parameters and catchment land-uses with TTHMs concentrations in Irish drinking water. A high risk catchment map was created using peat presence, rainfall (>1400 mm) and slope (<5%) and overlain with a map comprising the national dataset of routinely monitored TTHM concentrations. It appeared evident from the map that the presence of peat, rainfall and slope could be used to identify catchments at high risk to TTHM exceedances. Furthermore, statistical analyses highlighted that the presence of peat soil with agricultural land was a significant driver of TTHM exceedances for all treatment types. PARAFAC analysis from three case studies identified a fluorophore indicative of reprocessed humic natural organic matter as the dominant component following treatment at the three sites. Case studies also indicated that (1) chloroform contributed to the majority of the TTHMs in the drinking water supplies and (2) the supply networks contributed to about 30 μg L^-1 of TTHMs.

Spectroscopic Indicators for Cytotoxicity of Chlorinated and Ozonated Effluents from Wastewater Stabilization Ponds and Activated Sludge

We investigated chronic mammalian cell cytotoxicity of wastewaters from four sources and their optical spectroscopic properties with or without chlorination or ozonation. Samples from effluents of activated sludge, nitrification tower, facultative waste stabilization pond, and maturation waste stabilization pond were either chlorinated or ozonated. The wastewater samples were analyzed for fluorescence excitation emission matrix, specific fluorescence index (SFI), and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA). Before and after disinfection the wastewater samples were quantitatively analyzed for in vitro mammalian cell cytotoxicity. We found that the organic extracts from the ozonated samples induced lower cytotoxicity responses than those from the chlorinated or the nondisinfected samples. To develop correlations between SFI, SUVA, and cytotoxicity, we analyzed 21 independent samples. Significant linear correlations found among these samples suggest that under the tested conditions, cytotoxicity was preferentially influenced by the fluorescence and SUVA of their composite organic agents. These two spectroscopic parameters may be used as indicators for the potential cytotoxicity of nondisinfected, ozonated, or chlorinated municipal wastewaters.

Impacts of global changes on the biogeochemistry and environmental effects of dissolved organic matter at the land-ocean interface: a review

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component in the biogeochemistry and ecosystem function of aquatic environments at the highly populated land-ocean interface. The mobilization and transformation of DOM at this critical interface are increasingly affected by a series of notable global changes such as the increasing storm events, intense human activities, and accelerating glacier loss. This review provides an overview of the changes in the quantity and quality of DOM under the influences of multiple global changes. The profound implications of changing DOM for aquatic ecosystem and human society are further discussed, and future research needs are suggested for filling current knowledge gaps. The fluvial export of DOM is strongly intensified during storm events, which is accompanied with notable changes in the chemical composition and reactivity of DOM. Land use not only changes the mobilization of natural DOM source pools within watersheds but also adds DOM of distinct chemical composition and reactivity from anthropogenic sources. Glacier loss brings highly biolabile DOM to downstream water bodies. The changing DOM leads to significant changes in heterotrophic activity, CO₂ out gassing, nutrient and pollutant biogeochemistry, and disinfection by-product formation. Further studies on the source, transformations, and downstream effects of storm DOM, temporal variations of DOM and its interactions with other pollutants in human-modified watersheds, photo-degradability of glacier DOM, and potential priming effects, are essential for better understanding the responses and feedbacks of DOM at the land-ocean interface under the impacts of global changes.

Disinfection byproduct precursor dynamics and water treatability during an extreme flooding event in a coastal blackwater river in southeastern United States

Coastal blackwater rivers, characterized by high concentrations of natural organic matter, are source water for millions of people in the southeastern US. In October 2015, large areas of coastal South Carolina were flooded by Hurricane Joaquin. This so-called "thousand-year" rainfall mobilized and flushed large amounts of terrestrial organic matter and associated pollutants (e.g. mercury) into source water, affecting water quality and safety of municipal water supply. To understand the dynamics of water quality and water treatability during this extreme flood, water samples were collected from Waccamaw River (a typical blackwater river in the southeastern US) during rising limb, peak discharge, falling limb, and base flow. Despite decreasing water flow after peak discharge, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels (increased by up to 125%), and formation potentials of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids (increased by up to 150%) remained high for an extended period of time (>eight weeks after peak discharge), while variation in the N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) FP was negligible. Coagulation with alum and ferric at optimal dosage significantly reduced concentrations of DOC by 51-76%, but up to 10 mg/L of DOC still remained in treated waters. For an extended period of time, elevated levels of THMs (71-448 μg/L) and HAAs (88-406 μg/L) were quantified in laboratory chlorination experiments under uniform formation conditions (UFC), exceeding the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) maximum contaminant level of 80 and 60 μg/L, respectively. Results demonstrated that populations in coastal cities are at high risk with disinfection by-products (DBPs) under the changing climate.

Integration of coagulation and adsorption for removal of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors from biologically treated municipal wastewater

This study investigated the N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation potential of various dissolved organic matter (DOM) fractions in biologically treated municipal wastewater by UF fractionation, XAD-8 resin adsorption isolation, and excitation and emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy. Removal of various NDMA precursor fractions was also analyzed to evaluate the efficiency of traditional water treatment processes (coagulation, adsorption, and coagulation-adsorption). Results showed that NDMA were mainly formed by low molecular weight (MW) fractions (<30 kDa) and hydrophilic fractions (HiS) in biologically treated municipal wastewater. Integrated coagulation-adsorption treatments showed the highest reduction capacity for NDMA formation potential (57%), followed by isolated adsorption treatment (50%) and isolated coagulation treatment (28%). The powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption process could reduce the high MW precursors (>30 kDa) by 48%, which was higher than other treatments. In contrast, the highest uptake (66%) of low MW precursors (<30 kDa) was achieved by the coagulation-adsorption process. All treatments preferentially removed the hydrophobic acids (HoA) fraction compared to other fractions. Coagulation could remove more fulvic acid-like substances and adsorption could remove more microbial by-products and aromatic proteins.

THM and HAA formation from NOM in raw and treated surface waters

The disinfection by-product (DBP) formation potential (FP) of natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water sources has been studied with reference to the key water quality determinants (WQDs) of UV absorption (UV₂₅₄), colour, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. The data set used encompassed raw and treated water sampled over a 30-month period from 30 water treatment works (WTWs) across Scotland, all employing conventional clarification. Both trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) FPs were considered. In addition to the standard bulk WQDs, the DOC content was fractionated and analysed for the hydrophobic (HPO) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions. Results were quantified in terms of the yield (dDBPFP/dWQD) and the linear regression coefficient R² of the yield trend. The NOM in the raw waters was found to comprise 30-84% (average 66%) of the more reactive HPO material, with this proportion falling to 18-63% (average 50%) in the treated water. Results suggested UV₂₅₄ to be as good an indicator of DBPFP as DOC or HPO for the raw waters, with R² values ranging from 0.79 to 0.82 for THMs and from 0.71 to 0.73 for HAAs for these three determinants. For treated waters the corresponding values were significantly lower at 0.52-0.67 and 0.46-0.47 respectively, reflecting the lower HPO concentration and thus UV₂₅₄ absorption and commensurately reduced precision due to the limit of detection of the analytical instrument. It is concluded that fractionation offers little benefit in attempting to discern or predict chlorinated carbonaceous DBP yield for the waters across the geographical region studied. UV₂₅₄ offered an adequate estimate of DBPFP based on a mean yield of ∼2600 and ∼2800 μg per cm^-1 absorbance for THMFP for the raw and treated waters respectively and ∼3800 and2900 μg cm^-1 for HAAFP, albeit with reduced precision for the treated waters.

Carbonaceous and nitrogenous disinfection by-product formation from algal organic matter

Seasonal algal blooms in drinking water sources release intracellular and extracellular algal organic matter (AOM) in significant concentrations into the water. This organic matter provides precursors for disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed when the water is subsequently chlorinated at the final disinfection stage of the potable water treatment process. This paper presents results of AOM characterisation from five algal species (three cyanobacteria, one diatom and one green) alongside the measurement of the DBP formation potential from the AOM of six algal species (an additional diatom). The character was explored in terms of hydrophilicity, charge and protein and carbohydrate content. 18 DBPs were measured following chlorination of the AOM samples: the four trihalomethanes (THMs), nine haloacetic acids (HAAs), four haloacetonitriles (HANs) and one halonitromethane (HNM). The AOM was found to be mainly hydrophilic (52 and 81%) in nature. Yields of up to 92.4 μg mg^-1 C carbonaceous DBPs were measured, with few consistent trends between DBP formation propensity and either the specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) or the chemical characteristics. The AOM from diatomaceous algae formed significant amounts of nitrogenous DBPs (up to 1.7 μg mg^-1 C). The weak trends in DBPFP may be attributable to the hydrophilic nature of AOM, which also makes it more challenging to remove by conventional water treatment processes.

The enhanced reduction of C- and N-DBP formation in treatment of source water containing Microcystis aeruginosa using a novel CTSAC composite coagulant

This study investigated the effect of a chitosan-aluminium chloride (CTSAC) composite coagulation process on reducing the formation of algal organic matters (AOM) related carbonaceous disinfection by-products (C-DBPs) and nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs), by removing or adsorbing their precursors. Compared with aluminium chloride (AC) and chitosan (CTS) alone, CTSAC significantly enhanced the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOC), polysaccharide, protein and humic acids, attaining removals of 64.95%, 80.78%, 70.85% and 44.50%, respectively. Notably, the three-dimensional excitation and emission matrix (3D-EEM) combined with molecular weight (MW) fractionation analysis revealed that CTSAC was not only effective for removing high-MW AOM, but also for the low-MW fractions that are important in forming DBPs. In addition, the CTSAC coagulation was proven to enhance the removal of aromatic polypeptide/amino acid-like materials and aliphatic amines, which have high N-nitrosodimethylamine formation potential. Efficient AOM removal by the CTSAC coagulation resulted in significant reduction of both AOM-related C-DBPs (63.54%) and N-DBPs (71%), while AC coagulation did not substantially reduce the formation of tribromomethane, 1,1,1-trichloropropanone or N-nitrosodimethylamine, and CTS coagulation alone did not achieve any obvious reduction in trichloronitromethane. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis confirmed the interaction of CTS and AC in the CTSAC composite coagulation, which contributed to the improved AOM removal performance of CTSAC, and, in this case, reduced the formation of C- and N-DBPs.

Concentration, composition, bioavailability, and N-nitrosodimethylamine formation potential of particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen in wastewater effluents: A comparative study

Wastewater-derived organic nitrogen (org-N) can act as both nutrients and carcinogenic nitrogenous disinfection byproduct precursors. In this study, the concentration, composition, bioavailability, and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation potential of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) from three different municipal wastewater treatment plants were characterized and compared with that of effluent dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). The average effluent PON and DON concentrations ranged from 0.09 to 0.55mgN/L and from 0.91 to 1.88mgN/L, respectively. According to principal component analysis, org-N composition and characterization differed in PON and DON samples (n=20). Compared with DON, PON tended to be enriched in protein and nucleic acids, and showed a more proteinaceous character. Composition of org-N functional groups estimated from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy N 1s spectra indicate no significant differences in the molecular weight distribution of the protein-like materials between PON and DON. Moreover, PON exhibited a significantly higher bioavailability (61.0±13.3%) compared to DON (38.5±12.4%, p˂0.05, t-test) and a significantly higher NDMA yields (791.4±404.0ng/mg-N) compared to DON (374.8±62.5ng/mg-N, p˂0.05, t-test). Accordingly, PON contributed to approximately 12.3-41.7% of the total bioavailable org-N and 22.0-38.4% of the total NDMA precursors in wastewater effluents. Thus, the potential adverse effects of PON on wastewater discharge and reuse applications should not be overlooked, even though it only accounted for 7.4-26.8% of the total effluent org-N.

Identification and characterization of phenylacetonitrile as a nitrogenous disinfection byproduct derived from chlorination of phenylalanine in drinking water

Unregulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs), originating from chlorination of the precursor amino acid phenylalanine in aqueous systems, were identified in laboratory reactions and distributed tap. The major N-DBP identified was phenylacetonitrile, and minor DBPs of benzyl chloride, phenylacetaldehyde, 2-chlorobenzyl cyanide, and 2, 6-diphenylpyridine were also formed. Phenylacetonitrile was generated through decarboxylation, dechlorination and/or hydrolysis processes. With an aromatic structure, phenylacetonitrile has an unpleasant odor of various descriptors and an odor threshold concentration of 0.2 ppt-v as measured through gas chromatography-olfactometry. The half-life of phenylacetonitrile in reagent water and chlorinated water at 19 °C were 121 h and 792 h, respectively. The occurrence of phenylacetonitrile as an N-DBP in tap water was investigated for the first time; the results revealed that μg/L concentrations were present in nine different distributed drinking waters in China and the United States. Phenylacetonitrile deteriorates the aesthetic quality of drinking water and may present risk due to its prolonged existence in drinking water, especially in the presence of residual chlorine.

Developing LED UV fluorescence sensors for online monitoring DOM and predicting DBPs formation potential during water treatment

Online monitoring dissolved organic matter (DOM) is urgent for water treatment management. In this study, high performance size exclusion chromatography with multi-UV absorbance and multi-emission fluorescence scans were applied to spectrally characterize samples from 16 drinking water sources across Yangzi River and Huai River Watersheds. The UV absorbance indices at 254 nm and 280 nm referred to the same DOM components and concentration, and the 280 nm UV light could excite both protein-like and humic-like fluorescence. Hence a novel UV fluorescence sensor was developed out using only one UV280 light-emitting diode (LED) as light source. For all samples, enhanced coagulation was mainly effective for large molecular weight biopolymers; while anion exchange further substantially removed humic substances. During chlorination tests, UVA280 and UVA254 showed similar correlations with yields of disinfection byproducts (DBPs); the humic-like fluorescence obtained from LED sensors correlated well with both trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids yields, while the correlation between protein-like fluorescence and trihalomethanes was relatively poor. Anion exchange exhibited more reduction of DBPs yields as well as UV absorbance and fluorescence signals than enhanced coagulation. The results suggest that the LED UV fluorescence sensors are very promising for online monitoring DOM and predicting DBPs formation potential during water treatment.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation during ozonation of wastewater and water treatment polymers

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation by ozonation was investigated in the effluents of four different wastewater treatment plants destined for alternative reuse. Very high levels of NDMA formation were observed in wastewaters from treatment plants non operating with biological nitrogen removal. Selected experiments showed that hydroxyl radical did not have a significant role in NDMA formation during ozonation of wastewater. Furthermore, ozonation of three different polymers used for water treatment, including polyDADMAC, anionic polyacrylamide, and cationic polyacrylamide, spiked in wastewater did not increase the NDMA formation. Effluent organic matter (EfOM) likely reduced the availability of ozone in water able to react with polymers and quenched the produced ·OH radicals which limited polymer degradation and subsequent NDMA production. Excellent correlations were observed between NDMA formation, UV absorbance at 254 nm, and total fluorescence reduction. These data provide evidence that UV and fluorescence surrogates could be used for monitoring and/or controlling NDMA formation during ozonation.

Fractionation, characterization and C-, N-disinfection byproduct formation of soluble microbial products in MBR processes

Soluble microbial products are heterogeneous organic materials generated during microbial growth and decay, which are the major soluble organic matters in MBR effluents and are the primary precursors forming disinfection by-products (DBPs). In this study, biomass associated products (BAP) and utilization associated products (UAP) were separately produced to investigate their physical chemical characteristics and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during chlorination in the presence of ammonia. BAP had higher formation reactivity of halogenated carbonaceous and nitrogenous DBPs including trihalomethanes, haloketones, haloacetonitriles and trichloronitromethane due to their higher percentage of large molecular weight (MW) materials and humic substances compared with UAP. However, the nonhalogenated species N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) yield of UAP was twice higher than that of BAP because UAP contained more nitrogenous organic matters with MW<500Da including aromatic polypeptide/amino acid-like materials and secondary amines, which have been proved to have high NDMA formation potential.

Tracking the behavior of different size fractions of dissolved organic matter in a full-scale advanced drinking water treatment plant

In this study, five different dissolved organic matter (DOM) fractions, defined based on a size exclusion chromatography with simultaneous detection of organic carbon (OCD) and ultraviolet (UVD), were quantitatively tracked with a treatment train of coagulation/flocculation-sand filtration-ozonation-granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration in a full-scale advanced drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). Five DOM samples including raw water were taken after each treatment process in the DWTP every month over the period of three years. A higher abundance of biopolymer (BP) fraction was found in the raw water during spring and winter than in the other seasons, suggesting an influence of algal bloom and/or meltwater on DOM composition. The greater extent of removal was observed upon the coagulation/flocculation for high-molecular-weight fractions including BP and humic substances (HS) and aromatic moieties, while lower sized fractions were preferentially removed by the GAC filtration. Ozone treatment produced the fraction of low-molecular-weight neutrals probably resulting from the breakdown of double-bonded carbon structures by ozone oxidation. Coagulation/flocculation was the only process that revealed significant effects of influent DOM composition on the treatment efficiency, as revealed by a high correlation between the DOM removal rate and the relative abundance of HS for the raw water. Our study demonstrated that SEC-OCD-UVD was successful in monitoring size-based DOM composition for the advanced DWTP, providing an insight into optimizing the treatment options and the operational conditions for the removal of particular fractions within the bulk DOM.

Occurrence and behaviors of fluorescence EEM-PARAFAC components in drinking water and wastewater treatment systems and their applications: a review

Fluorescence excitation emission matrices-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) is a powerful tool for characterizing dissolved organic matter (DOM), and it is applied in a rapidly growing number of studies on drinking water and wastewater treatments. This paper presents an overview of recent findings about the occurrence and behavior of PARAFAC components in drinking water and wastewater treatments, as well as their feasibility for assessing the treatment performance and water quality including disinfection by-product formation potentials (DBPs FPs). A variety of humic-like, protein-like, and unique (e.g., pyrene-like) fluorescent components have been identified, providing valuable insights into the chemical composition of DOM and the effects of various treatment processes in engineered systems. Coagulation/flocculation-clarification preferentially removes humic-like components, and additional treatments such as biological activated carbon filtration, anion exchange, and UV irradiation can further remove DOM from drinking water. In contrast, biological treatments are more effective for protein-like components in wastewater treatments. PARAFAC components have been proven to be valuable as surrogates for conventional water quality parameter, to track the changes of organic matter quantity and quality in drinking water and wastewater treatments. They are also feasible for assessing formations of trihalomethanes and other DBPs and evaluating treatment system performance. Further studies of EEM-PARAFAC for assessing the effects of the raw water quality and variable treatment conditions on the removal of DOM, and the formation potentials of various emerging DBPs, are essential for optimizing the treatment processes to ensure treated water quality.

Spectrophotometric characterization of dissolved organic matter in a rural watershed: the Madon River (N-E France)

In the last 20 years, increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations have been observed in several rivers and lakes in Europe. This increase has reduced the quality of the aquatic environment. In this study, UV-vis spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy with a difference of 50 nm between the excitation and emission (SF50) were used to characterize the DOC in a rural river (Madon River). The specific absorbance index at 254 nm (SUVA254) which is related to the aromaticity of DOC was extracted from UV-vis spectra, whose maximum of the second derivative (occurring near 225 nm) is related to nitrates. SF50 spectra which are characterized by well-defined peaks indicated large spatial and temporal variations. Two methods were used to analyze and compare these spectra. The first method was based on the decomposition of the SF50 spectra into four Gauss functions: B1 (related to tryptophan-like fluorescence), B2 and B3 (related to humic substances), and B4 (related to chlorophyll-like substances). The second method was principal components analysis (PCA), which results yielded three principal components that accounted for 95% of the variance. Although PCA enables the consideration of the spectra without making assumptions regarding the number of fluorophores, the results from the decomposition in Gauss function were easier to interpret.
