Adsorption of polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolytes-surfactant mixtures at surfaces: a physico-chemical approach to a cosmetic challenge

Characterization of chitosan-lysine surfactant bioactive coating on silicone substrate

Chitosan (Chi) and anionic surfactant derived from lysine (77KS) were used to prepare a novel bioactive coating and as a drug delivery system for amoxicillin (AMOX) on a model polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. The bioactive coating was formulated as polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex (PESC). Aggregation behaviour between the cationic Chi and oppositely charged 77KS in bulk was analysed using turbidity and ζ-potential measurement. Furthermore, the adsorption and stability of the formulations were evaluated using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The effect of the ionic strength and of the ultraviolet/ozone (UVO) activation of the PDMS films on the adsorption behaviour of the PESC complex was also examined. QCM-D monitoring showed stable adsorption of bare and AMOX-loaded complex on non-activated PDMS films, while the coating on UVO-activated PDMS samples desorbed after the rinsing step. Finally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed successful and homogenously distributed compounds.

Surfactant-free and rinsing-resistant biodegradable nanoparticles with high adsorption on natural fibers for the long-lasting release of fragrances

Synthetic polymers are attracting growing attention as additives for laundry and personal care products. In particular, the high volatility of many common fragrances requires the development of polymeric particles for their encapsulation and controlled release. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these carriers is made from polymers that are not biodegradable. This poses severe concerns about the accumulation of nano- and microplastics. Hence, such particles are expected to be banned from the market in the coming years. Therefore, biodegradable particles enabling a long-lasting release of the fragrances are urgently needed. In this work, we produced biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) that are structurally composed of lactones, i.e. well known perfumes that occur naturally and that are already considered safe by regulatory agencies. We polymerized these lactones via ring opening polymerization (ROP) using an ionizable tertiary amine as initiator to produce in a single step amphiphilic oligoesters able to directly self-assemble into NPs once nanoprecipitated in water. In this way, we can produce biodegradable NPs with a perfume loading up to 85 % w/w without the need for additional surfactants. Subsequently we show that the ionizable group is able to confer a positive charge to our nanoparticles and, in turn, a high adsorption capacity on natural fibers (i.e. hairs and cotton fabric). Finally, we demonstrate the nanoparticle resistance to rinsing and their ability to confer a long-lasting fragrance perception to treated hair swatches for at least 3 weeks.

Luengo G, Rubio AM, Rey A, Léonforte F. Self-Consistent Mean Field Calculations of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures in Solution and upon Adsorption onto Negatively Charged Surfaces

Self-Consistent Mean-Field Calculations (SCF) have provided a semi-quantitative description of the physico-chemical behavior of six different polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. The SCF calculations performed showed that both the formation of polymer-surfactant in bulk and the adsorption of the formed complexes onto negatively-charged surfaces are strongly affected by the specific nature of the considered systems, with the polymer-surfactant interactions playing a central role in the self-assembly of the complexes that, in turn, affects their adsorption onto interfaces and surfaces. This work evidences that SCF calculations are a valuable tool for deepening on the understanding of the complex physico-chemical behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. However, it is worth noting that the framework obtained on the basis of an SCF approach considered an equilibrium situation which may, in some cases, be far from the real situation appearing in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems.

Contrast variation of micelles composed of Ca2+ and block copolymers of two negatively charged polyelectrolytes

Block copolymers were prepared with two anionic polyelectrolyte blocks: sodium polyacrylate (PA) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), in order to investigate their phase behavior in aqueous solution in the presence of Ca2+ cations. Depending on the concentration of polymer and Ca2+ and on the ratio of the block lengths in the copolymer, spherical micelles were observed. Micelle formation arises from the specific interaction of Ca2+ with the PA block only. An extensive small-angle scattering study was performed in order to unravel the structure and dimensions of the block copolymer micelles. Deuteration of the PA block enabled us to perform contrast variation experiments using small-angle neutron scattering at variable ratios of light and heavy water which were combined with information from small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering.

Inhomogeneous Distribution of Cationic Surfactants around Anionic Molecular Clusters

An interesting phenomenon is reported when uranyl peroxide nanoclusters U₆₀ (Li_48+m K₁₂ (OH)_m [UO₂ (O₂ )(OH)]₆₀ (H₂ O)_n , m≈20 and n≈310) interact with a small number of cationic surfactant molecules. Cationic surfactant molecules do not distribute evenly around the U₆₀ clusters during the interaction as expected. Instead, a small fraction of U₆₀ clusters attract almost all the surfactant molecules, leading to the self-assembly into supramolecular structures by using surfactant-U₆₀ complexes as building locks, and later further aggregate and precipitate based on hydrophobic interaction, whereas the rest of the clusters remained unbounded soluble macroions in bulk dispersion. This phenomenon nicely demonstrates a unique feature of macroion solutions. Considering that Debye-Hückel approximation is no longer valid in such solutions, the competition between the local electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction becomes important to regulate the solution behaviors of macroions.

Colloids at Fluid Interfaces

Over the last two decades, understanding of the attachment of colloids to fluid interfaces has attracted the interest of researchers from different fields. This is explained by considering the ubiquity of colloidal and interfacial systems in nature and technology. However, to date, the control and tuning of the assembly of colloids at fluid interfaces remain a challenge. This review discusses some of the most fundamental aspects governing the organization of colloidal objects at fluid interfaces, paying special attention to spherical particles. This requires a description of different physicochemical aspects, from the driving force involved in the assembly to its thermodynamic description, and from the interactions involved in the assembly to the dynamics and rheological behavior of particle-laden interfaces.

Effect of molecular structure of eco-friendly glycolipid biosurfactants on the adsorption of hair-care conditioning polymers

Pseudo-binary mixtures of different glycolipids, four different rhamnolipids (RL) and an alkyl polyglucoside (APG), with poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) have been studied in relation to their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces to shed light on the impact of the molecular structure of surfactants from natural sources (instead of synthetic surfactant, such as sodium laureth sulfate) on the adsorption of hair-conditioning polymers. For this purpose, the self-assembly of such mixtures in aqueous solution and their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces mimicking the negative charge of damaged hair fibres have been studied combining experiments and self-consistent field (SCF) calculations. The results show that the specific physico-chemical properties of the surfactants (charge, number of sugar rings present in surfactant structure and length of the hydrocarbon length) play a main role in the control of the adsorption process, with the adsorption efficiency and hydration being improved in relation to conventional sulfate-based systems for mixtures of PDADMAC and glycolipids with the shortest alkyl chains. SCF calculations and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis on real hair confirmed such observations. The results allow one to assume that the characteristic of the surfactants, especially rhamnolipids, conditions positively the adsorption potential of polyelectrolytes in these model systems. This study provides important insights on the mechanisms underlying the performance of more complex but eco-friendly washing formulations.

Dielectric relaxation studies of collagen - surfactant complexes in aqueous buffer solution

Dielectric relaxation studies of rat tail tendon collagen with anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), cationic cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic Tween 80 in aqueous buffer solutions at four different temperatures have been carried out in the frequency range 1 GHz to 25 GHz using time domain dielectric spectroscopy. The frequency dependent normalized dielectric modulus function P of the collagen and surfactant solutions show up as peaks around 1-2 GHz which is due to the bound water around collagen macromolecule and surfactant micelles. For the collagen - surfactant complexes, the peak in normalized dielectric modulus function P is shifted towards high frequency side near 2-3 GHz upon addition of surfactants to collagen in buffer solution. The water structure around collagen is altered in the presence of micelle forming surfactant additives and this change may affect the degrees of freedom of their motion. Hence the significant changes are observed in the relaxation time of bound water around collagen macromolecule in the presence of surfactants. Further, it was observed that no considerable change in relaxation time of hydration water of the complexes with respect to change in temperature within the studied temperature range. The activation enthalpy and activation entropy for the dipolar orientation corresponding to the free water for the surfactants and their complexes with collagen have been calculated from the Arrhenius plot. Our thermodynamic results suggest that the two‑hydrogen-bonded model may be possible in SDS and Tween 80 environments, whereas the one‑hydrogen-bonded model is likely to be possible in buffer and CTAB environments.

Surfactant-Like Behavior for the Adsorption of Mixtures of a Polycation and Two Different Zwitterionic Surfactants at the Water/Vapor Interface

The bulk and interfacial properties of solutions formed by a polycation (i.e., poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and two different zwitterionic surfactants (i.e., coco-betaine (CB) and cocoamidopropyl-betaine (CAPB)) have been studied. The bulk aggregation of the polyelectrolyte and the two surfactants was analyzed by turbidity and electrophoretic mobility measurements, and the adsorption of the solutions at the fluid interface was studied by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements. Evidence of polymer-surfactant complex formation in bulk was only found when the number of surfactant molecules was closer to the number of charged monomers in solutions, which suggests that the electrostatic repulsion associated with the presence of a positively charged group in the surfactant hinders the association between PDADMAC and the zwitterionic surfactant for concentrations in which there are no micelles in solution. This lack of interaction in bulk is reflected in the absence of an influence of the polyelectrolyte in the interfacial properties of the mixtures, with the behavior being controlled by the presence of surfactant. This work has evidenced the significant importance of the different interactions involved in the system for controlling the interaction and complexation mechanisms of in polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures.

Two Different Scenarios for the Equilibration of Polycation—Anionic Solutions at Water–Vapor Interfaces

The assembly in solution of the cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and two different anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate (SLMT), has been studied. Additionally, the adsorption of the formed complexes at the water–vapor interface have been measured to try to shed light on the complex physico-chemical behavior of these systems under conditions close to that used in commercial products. The results show that, independently of the type of surfactant, polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions lead to the formation of kinetically trapped aggregates in solution. Such aggregates drive the solution to phase separation, even though the complexes should remain undercharged along the whole range of explored compositions. Despite the similarities in the bulk behavior, the equilibration of the interfacial layers formed upon adsorption of kinetically trapped aggregates at the water–vapor interface follows different mechanisms. This was pointed out by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements, which showed different equilibration mechanisms of the interfacial layer depending on the nature of the surfactant: (i) formation layers with intact aggregates in the PDADMAC-SLMT system, and (ii) dissociation and spreading of kinetically trapped aggregates after their incorporation at the fluid interface for the PDADMAC-SLES one. This evidences the critical impact of the chemical nature of the surfactant in the interfacial properties of these systems. It is expected that this work may contribute to the understanding of the complex interactions involved in this type of system to exploit its behavior for technological purposes.

Multilayers formed by polyelectrolyte-surfactant and related mixtures at the air-water interface

The structure and occurrence of multilayered adsorption at the air-water interface of surfactants in combination with other oppositely charged species is reviewed. The main species that trigger multilayer formation are multiply charged metal, oligo- and polyions. The structures vary from the attachment of one or two more or less complete surfactant bilayers to the initial surfactant monolayer at the air-water interface to the attachment of a greater number of bilayers with a more defective structure. The majority of the wide range of observations of such structures have been made using neutron reflectometry. The possible mechanisms for the attraction of surfactant bilayers to an air-water interface are discussed and particular attention is given to the question of whether these structures are true equilibrium structures.

Controlled allylation of polyelectrolytes: a deep insight into chemical aspects and their applicability as building blocks for robust multilayer coatings

Polyelectrolytes (PEs) bearing easily derivatizable functions for possible post-modification under mild conditions can find a broad range of applications in various fields. The present paper describes the successful controlled side-chain allylation of two types of PEs: polyamine-based polycations, i.e. poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and strong polyanions, i.e. poly(sodium vinyl sulfonate) (PVS) and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS). PSS has been largely investigated in the literature, while PVS is much less commonly explored. The allylation of each type presents its own drawback, i.e. heterogeneous reaction in the case of strong polyanions and instability of partially protonated allylated polyamine products. Nevertheless, all encountered difficulties could be solved and thoroughly elucidated by different experimental tests. This partial allyl-functionalization does not affect the electrolytic properties of the newly allylated PEs, as evidenced by the effective construction of two series of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films, namely PEI-ene (PSS-ene/PAH-ene)4 and PEI-ene (PVS-ene/PAH-ene)4, the latter being one of the rare examples developed in the literature. The presence of allyl groups on the PE side-chains allows for the stabilization of the resulting PEM films via thiol-ene photo-crosslinking in the presence of a water-soluble dithiol crosslinker. In order to fix permanently the resulting crosslinked PEM films on substrates, the covalent crosslinking occurs not only between different C=C bonds on PE layers but also with those present on substrates preliminarily functionalized with allyl groups via sulfur–gold chemistry. The robustness of both resulting crosslinked PEM films under strongly basic solution (pH 14) is validated by Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) measurements. The versatility and effectiveness of the present approach is expected to find potential applications in different scientific and technological fields.

Amino Acid-Functionalized Polyelectrolyte Films as Bioactive Surfaces for Cell Adhesion

Surfaces were prepared with polyelectrolyte derivatives of poly(styrene- alt-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) functionalized with amino acids of different hydropathy indices, with the aim of evaluating the effect of the chemical functionality of polyelectrolytes on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell adhesion. Functionalizing PSMA derivatives with l-glutamine, l-methionine, and l-tyrosine yielded PSMA-Gln, PSMA-Met, and PSMA-Tyr polyelectrolytes, respectively. We first studied the adsorption behavior of PSMA functionalized with amino acids on silicon wafer surfaces modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane at pH 4.0 and 7.0 and at low and high ionic strengths. The highest rate of polyelectrolyte adsorption was at pH 4.0 and high ionic strength and was higher with the glutamine and tyrosine films. The advance contact angles (θ_A) of the polyelectrolyte surfaces showed a moderate effect of ionic strength and pH on polyelectrolyte film wettability, with PSMA-Tyr being slightly more hydrophobic. Atomic force microscopy images of the polyelectrolyte surfaces showed two types of morphology: the well-defined globular nanostructure of PSMA-Met and PSMA-Tyr and densely packed nanofibrous-like structure of PSMA-Gln. The highest level of ionic strength caused a slight decrease in the size of the nanostructure that formed the surface domains, which was reflected in the degree of surface roughness. Cell adhesion assays with the polyelectrolyte film showed that SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells cultured on PSMA-Met present a well-extended morphology characterized by a stellate shape, with five or more actin-rich thin processes, whereas SH-SY5Y cells that were seeded on PSMA-Gln and PSMA-Tyr have a round morphology, with fewer and shorter processes. These results indicate that it is possible to modulate the surface characteristics of polyelectrolyte films based on their chemical functionality and environmental parameters such as pH and ionic strength in order to evaluate their effect on cell adhesion. Thus, surfaces prepared from polyelectrolytes functionalized with amino acids are an attractive and simple platform for cell adhesion, which can be used in developing biomaterials with modulated surface properties.

CnTAB/polystyrene sulfonate mixtures at air-water interfaces: effects of alkyl chain length on surface activity and charging state

Binding and phase behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants with different chain lengths were studied in aqueous bulk solutions and at air-water interfaces. In particular, we have investigated the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) and the cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₂TAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₄TAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₆TAB). In order to reveal the surfactant/polyelectrolyte binding, aggregation and phase separation of the mixtures, we have varied the NaPSS concentration systematically and have kept the surfactant concentration fixed at 1/6 of the respective critical micelle concentration. Information on the behavior in the bulk solution was gained by electrophoretic mobility and turbidity measurements, while the surface properties were studied using surface tension measurements and vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG). This has enabled us to relate bulk to interfacial properties with respect to the charging state and the surfactants' binding efficiency. We found that the latter two are strongly dependent on the alkyl chain length of the surfactant and that binding is much more efficient as the alkyl chain length of the surfactant increases. This also results in a different phase behavior as shown by turbidity measurements of the bulk solutions. Charge neutral aggregates that are forming in the bulk adsorb onto the air-water interface - an effect that is likely caused by the increased hydrophobicity of C_nTAB/PSS complexes. This conclusion is corroborated by SFG spectroscopy, where we observe a decrease in the intensity of O-H stretching bands, which is indicative of a decrease in surface charging and the formation of interfaces with negligible net charge. Particularly at mixing ratios that are in the equilibrium two-phase region, we observe weak O-H intensities and thus surface charging.

Intermolecular Interactions in Polyelectrolyte and Surfactant Complexes in Solution

Polyelectrolytes are an important class of polymeric materials and are increasingly used in complex industrial formulations. A core use of these materials is in mixtures with surfactants, where a combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions drives unique solution behavior and structure formation. In this review, we apply a molecular level perspective to the broad literature on polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes, discussing explicitly the hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction contributions to polyelectrolyte surfactant complexes (PESCs), as well as the interplay between the two molecular interaction types. These interactions are sensitive to a variety of solution conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, mixing procedure, charge density, etc. and these parameters can readily be used to control the concentration at which structures form as well as the type of structure in the bulk solution.

Physico-chemical foundations of particle-laden fluid interfaces

Particle-laden interfaces are ubiquitous nowadays. The understanding of their properties and structure is essential for solving different problems of technological and industrial relevance; e.g. stabilization of foams, emulsions and thin films. These rely on the response of the interface to mechanical perturbations. The complex mechanical response appearing in particle-laden interfaces requires deepening on the understanding of physico-chemical mechanisms underlying the assembly of particles at interface which plays a central role in the distribution of particles at the interface, and in the complex interfacial dynamics appearing in these systems. Therefore, the study of particle-laden interfaces deserves attention to provide a comprehensive explanation on the complex relaxation mechanisms involved in the stabilization of fluid interfaces.

Equilibration of a Polycation-Anionic Surfactant Mixture at the Water/Vapor Interface

The adsorption of concentrated poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC)-sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) mixtures at the water/vapor interface has been studied by different surface tension techniques and dilational viscoelasticity measurements. This work tries to shed light on the way in which the formation of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes in the bulk affects the interfacial properties of mixtures formed by a polycation and an oppositely charged surfactant. The results are discussed in terms of a two-step adsorption-equilibration of PDADMAC-SLES complexes at the interface, with the initial stages involving the diffusion of kinetically trapped aggregates formed in the bulk to the interface followed by the dissociation and spreading of such aggregates at the interface. This latter process becomes the main contribution to the surface tension decrease. This work aids our understanding of the most fundamental basis of the physicochemical behavior of concentrated polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures which present complex bulk and interfacial interactions with interest in both basic and applied sciences.

Design and Characterization of Topical Formulations: Correlations Between Instrumental and Sensorial Measurements

The interaction between cosmetic emulsions and the skin's surface is an important factor to consider in the development of topical formulations. Two important ingredients in cosmetic formulations are waxes and polymers. The physical and mechanical properties of formulations directly impact the interface skin-formulation. To evaluate this interaction, it is important to study the rheology, texture, and sensory properties. In this context, the aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of waxes and polymers on the rheological behavior, texture profile, and sensorial properties of topical formulations and the correlation between these parameters. The best combination of a wax and a polymer was determined by full factorial design of experiments and applied to develop eight formulations that were tested in relation to rheological, mechanical, and sensorial properties. The polymer helps with the spreadability of the formulation, and the wax had a strong influence on the parameters related to the structure of emulsions. A correlation between these parameters was observed. This way, it was possible to compare theoretical and practical data, except between the flow index and the work of shear. Finally, it was possible to predict sensorial aspects from rheological and texture parameters, making the formulation process easier and more integrated with all stages of the development of new topical formulations. Thus, the present study introduces a new proposal in the development of cosmetics.

Photoswitchable Layer-by-Layer Coatings Based on Photochromic Polynorbornenes Bearing Spiropyran Side Groups

Herein, we present the synthesis of linear photochromic norbornene polymers bearing spiropyran side groups (poly(SP-R)) and their assembly into layer-by-layer (LbL) films on glass substrates when converted to poly(MC-R) under UV irradiation. The LbL films were composed of bilayers of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(MC-R), forming (PAH/poly(MC-R)) _n coatings. The merocyanine (MC) form presents a significant absorption band in the visible spectral region, which allowed tracking of the LbL deposition process by UV-vis spectroscopy, which showed a linear increase of the characteristic MC absorbance band with increasing number of bilayers. The thickness and morphology of the (PAH/poly(MC-R)) _n films were characterized by ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively, with a height of ∼27.5 nm for the first bilayer and an overall height of ∼165 nm for the (PAH/poly(MC-R))₅ multilayer film. Prolonged white light irradiation (22 h) resulted in a gradual decrease of the MC band by 90.4 ± 2.9% relative to the baseline, indicating the potential application of these films as coatings for photocontrolled delivery systems.

Effects of Aggregate Charge and Subphase Ionic Strength on the Properties of Spread Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Films at the Air/Water Interface under Static and Dynamic Conditions

We demonstrate the ability to tune the formation of extended structures in films of poly(sodium styrenesulfonate)/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air/water interface through control over the charge/structure of aggregates as well as the ionic strength of the subphase. Our methodology to prepare loaded polyelectrolyte/surfactant films from self-assembled liquid crystalline aggregates exploits their fast dissociation and Marangoni spreading of material upon contact with an aqueous subphase. This process is proposed as a potential new route to prepare cheap biocompatible films for transfer applications. We show that films spread on water from swollen aggregates of low/negative charge have 1:1 charge binding and can be compressed only to a monolayer, beyond which material is lost to the bulk. For films spread on water from compact aggregates of positive charge, however, extended structures of the two components are created upon spreading or upon compression of the film beyond a monolayer. The application of ellipsometry, Brewster angle microscopy, and neutron reflectometry as well as measurements of surface pressure isotherms allow us to reason that formation of extended structures is activated by aggregates embedded in the film. The situation upon spreading on 0.1 M NaCl is different as there is a high concentration of small ions that stabilize loops of the polyelectrolyte upon film compression, yet extended structures of both components are only transient. Analogy of the controlled formation of extended structures in fluid monolayers is made to reservoir dynamics in lung surfactant. The work opens up the possibility to control such film dynamics in related systems through the rational design of particles in the future.

Towards understanding the behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures at the water/vapor interface closer to technologically-relevant conditions

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures and their interactions with fluid interfaces are an important research field due to their use in technological applications. Most of the existing knowledge on these systems is based on models in which the polyelectrolyte concentration is around 50 times lower than that used in commercial formulations. The present work marks a step to close the gap on the understanding of their behavior under more practically-relevant conditions. The adsorption of concentrated mixtures of poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium) chloride and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate at the water/vapor interface with a crude mixing protocol has been studied by different surface tension techniques, Brewster angle microscopy, neutron reflectometry, and several bulk characterization techniques. Kinetically-trapped aggregates formed during mixing influence the interfacial morphology of mixtures produced in the equilibrium one-phase region, yet fluctuations in the surface tension isotherm result depending on the tensiometric technique applied. At low bulk surfactant concentrations, the free surfactant concentration is very low, and the interfacial composition matches the trend of the bulk complexes, which is a behavior that has not been observed in studies on more dilute mixtures. Nevertheless, a transition to synergistic co-adsorption of complexes and free surfactant is observed at the higher bulk surfactant concentrations studied. This transition appears to be a special feature of these more concentrated mixtures, which deserves attention in future studies of systems with additional components.

Poly(allylamine)/tripolyphosphate coacervates enable high loading and multiple-month release of weakly amphiphilic anionic drugs: an in vitro study with ibuprofen

When synthetic polyamines, such poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), are mixed with crosslink-forming multivalent anions, they can undergo complex coacervation. This phenomenon has recently been exploited in various applications, ranging from inorganic material synthesis, to underwater adhesion, to multiple-month release of small, water-soluble molecules. Here, using ibuprofen as a model drug molecule, we show that these coacervates may be especially effective in the long-term release of weakly amphiphilic anionic drugs. Colloidal amphiphile/polyelectrolyte complex dispersions are first prepared by mixing the amphiphilic drug (ibuprofen) with PAH. Pentavalent tripolyphosphate (TPP) ions are then added to these dispersions to form ibuprofen-loaded PAH/TPP coacervates (where the strongly-binding TPP displaces the weaker-bound ibuprofen from the PAH amine groups). The initial ibuprofen/PAH binding leads to extremely high drug loading capacities (LC-values), where the ibuprofen comprises up to roughly 30% of the coacervate mass. Conversely, the dense ionic crosslinking of PAH by TPP results in very slow release rates, where the release of ibuprofen (a small, water-soluble drug) is extended over timescales that exceed 6 months. When ibuprofen is replaced with strong anionic amphiphiles, however (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), the stronger amphiphile/polyelectrolyte binding disrupts PAH/TPP association and sharply increases the coacervate solute permeability. These findings suggest that: (1) as sustained release vehicles, PAH/TPP coacervates might be very attractive for the encapsulation and multiple-month release of weakly amphiphilic anionic payloads; and (2) strong amphiphile incorporation could be useful for tailoring PAH/TPP coacervate properties.

Gel-like coacervates prepared through ionotropic gelation enable very high loading and multiple-month release of weakly amphiphilic small molecules. Conversely, strong amphiphile incorporation disrupts ionic crosslinking and strikingly alters the coacervate properties.

General Physical Description of the Behavior of Oppositely Charged Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures at the Air/Water Interface

This work reports a unifying general physical description of the behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant mixtures at the air/water interface in terms of equilibrium vs nonequilibrium extremes. The poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/sodium dodecyl sulfate system with added NaCl at two different bulk polyelectrolyte concentrations and the poly(sodium styrenesulfonate)/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide system have been systematically examined using a variety of bulk and surface techniques. Similarities in the general behavior are observed for all the investigated systems. Following the slow precipitation of aggregates in the equilibrium two-phase region, which can take several days or even weeks, depletion of surface-active material can result in a surface tension peak. The limiting time scale in the equilibration of the samples is discussed in terms of a balance between those of aggregate growth and settling. Bulk aggregates may spontaneously dissociate and spread material in the form of a kinetically trapped film if they interact with the interface, and a low surface tension then results out of equilibrium conditions. These interactions can occur prior to bulk equilibration while there remains a suspension of aggregates that can diffuse to the interface and following bulk equilibration if the settled precipitate is disturbed. Two clear differences in the behavior of the systems are the position in the isotherm of the surface tension peak and the time it takes to evolve. These features are both rationalized in terms of the nature of the bulk binding interactions.

Cationic gemini surfactant as a dual linker for a cholic acid-modified polysaccharide in aqueous solution: thermodynamics of interaction and phase behavior

Understanding the thermodynamics of formation of biocompatible aggregates is a key factor in the bottom up approach to the development of novel types of drug carriers and their structural tuning using small amphiphilic molecules. We chose an anionic amphiphilic and biocompatible polymer that consists of a dextran and grafted cholic acid pendants, randomly distributed along the dextran backbone, with a degree of substitution (DS) of 15 mol% (designated Dex-15CACOONa). The thermodynamics of interaction and phase behavior of mixtures of this polyelectrolyte and a cationic gemini surfactant hexanediyl-α,ω-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (C₁₂C₆C₁₂Br₂) or its monomer surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in aqueous solution were characterized by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and turbidity, together with cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). The various critical concentrations and the enthalpy changes of the corresponding phase transitions for the oppositely charged system were obtained from the plots of the observed enthalpy change (ΔH_obs) and turbidity measurements as a function of gemini concentration. The morphologies of the aggregates in various phases were observed by Cryo-TEM. Altogether these results suggest the critical role of gemini as a dual linker. At the concentrations where the crosslink between the pendant aggregates happens, the free gemini concentration is proximately zero and the aggregate retains its negative charge. The analysis of various factors involved in the interaction allowed a rationalization of the driving forces for mixed aggregate formation, which will contribute to a subsequent rational design of drug delivery systems based on this polymer/surfactant system.

Recent progress of the characterization of oppositely charged polymer/surfactant complex in dilution deposition system

A mixture of oppositely charged polymer and surfactants changes the solubilized state, having a complex precipitation region at the composition of electric neutralization. This complex behavior has been applied to surface modification in the fields of health care and cosmetic products such as conditioning shampoos, as a dilution-deposition system in which the polymer/surfactant mixture at the higher surfactant concentration precipitates the insoluble complex by dilution. A large number of studies over many years have revealed the basic coacervation behavior and physicochemical properties of complexes. However, the mechanism by which a precipitated complex performs surface modification is not well understood. The precipitation region and the morphology of precipitated complex that are changed by molecular structure and additives affect the performance. Hydrophilic groups such as the EO unit in polymers and surfactants, the mixing of nonionic or amphoteric surfactant and nonionic polymer, and the addition of low polar solvent influence the complex precipitation region. Furthermore, the morphology of precipitated complex is formed by crosslinking and aggregating among polymers in the dilution process, and characterizes the performance of products. The polymer chain density in precipitated complex is determined by the charges of both the polymer and surfactant micelle and the conformation of polymer. As a result, the morphology of precipitated complexes is changed from a closely packed film to looser meshes, and/or to small particles, and it is possible for the morphology to control the rheological properties and the amount of adsorbed silicone. In the future, further investigation of the relationships between the morphology and performance is needed.

Synergistic Effects of Bound Micelles and Temperature on the Flexibility of Thermoresponsive Polymer Brushes

The persistence length is a key parameter for the quantitative interpretation of the flexibility of polymers. We have studied complexes composed of a spherical poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brush and a sodium dodecyl sulfate micelle in an effort to characterize the flexibility of tethered PNIPAM below the lower critical solution temperature T_LCST. An analytical mean-field model is used to describe the persistence length L_p in a broad range of ψ, the number of bound micelles per chain. The persistence length of micelle-constrained PNIPAM is quantitatively correlated with the thermal energy k_BT, electrostatic repulsion f_C, and effective excluded-volume parameter ν_eff. The persistence length per ψ, which depends on T and f_C, is found to scale with a synergistic effect f_C/(ψk_BT). The results reveal that the bound-micelle charges affecting the persistence length are analogous to the fixed charges of polyelectrolytes, though the bound micelles are separated by a large number of neutral monomers. The extension ⟨L⟩ of micelle-constrained PNIPAM decreases as ⟨L⟩ ∼ f_C^-β_F with f_C, where β_F ≈ 0.58-0.8 depending on ψ, but as the universal power law ⟨L⟩ ∼ (f_C/k_BT)^-0.6 with the synergistic effect f_C/(k_BT), irrespective of ψ. In spite of the intricate interplay among the multiple components in the system, the extension scales as a function of ν_eff as ⟨L⟩ ∼ (ν_eff/ψL_p)^-β_V, where β_V ≈ 0.35 for the significant monomer interaction and β_V ≈ 0.2 for the weak or negligible monomer interaction.

Thermodynamics, interfacial pressure isotherms and dilational rheology of mixed protein-surfactant adsorption layers

Proteins and their mixtures with surfactants are widely used in many applications. The knowledge of their solution bulk behavior and its impact on the properties of interfacial layers made great progress in the recent years. Different mechanisms apply to the formation process of protein/surfactant complexes for ionic and non-ionic surfactants, which are governed mainly by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The surface activity of these complexes is often remarkably different from that of the individual protein and has to be considered in respective theoretical models. At very low protein concentration, small amounts of added surfactants can change the surface activity of proteins remarkably, even though no strongly interfacial active complexes are observed. Also small added amounts of non-ionic surfactants change the surface activity of proteins in the range of small bulk concentrations or surface coverages. The modeling of the equilibrium adsorption behavior of proteins and their mixtures with surfactants has reached a rather high level. These models are suitable also to describe the high frequency limits of the dilational viscoelasticity of the interfacial layers. Depending on the nature of the protein/surfactant interactions and the changes in the interfacial layer composition rather complex dilational viscoelasticities can be observed and described by the available models. The differences in the interfacial behavior, often observed in literature for studies using different experimental methods, are at least partially explained by a depletion of proteins, surfactants and their complexes in the range of low concentrations. A correction of these depletion effects typically provides good agreement between the data obtained with different methods, such as drop and bubble profile tensiometry.

Polymer-surfactant systems in bulk and at fluid interfaces

The interest of polymer-surfactant systems has undergone a spectacular development in the last thirty years due to their complex behavior and their importance in different industrial sectors. The importance can be mainly associated with the rich phase behavior of these mixtures that confers a wide range of physico-chemical properties to the complexes formed by polymers and surfactants, both in bulk and at the interfaces. This latter aspect is especially relevant because of the use of their mixture for the stabilization of dispersed systems such as foams and emulsions, with an increasing interest in several fields such as cosmetic, food science or fabrication of controlled drug delivery structures. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of different aspects related to the phase behavior of these mixtures and their intriguing behavior after adsorption at the liquid/air interface. A discussion of some physical properties of the bulk is also included. The discussion clearly points out that much more work is needed for obtaining the necessary insights for designing polymer-surfactant mixtures for specific applications.

Structural diversity, physicochemical properties and application of imidazolium surfactants: Recent advances

The current review covers recent advances on development and investigation of cationic surfactants containing imidazolium headgroup, which are being extensively investigated for their self-aggregation properties and are currently being utilized in various conventional and non-conventional application areas. These surfactants are being used as: soft template for synthesis of mesoporous/microporous materials, drug and gene delivery agent, stabilizing agent for nanoparticles, dispersants for single/multi walled carbon nanotubes, antimicrobial and antifungal agent, viscosity modifiers, preparing nanocomposite materials, stabilizing microemulsions, corrosion inhibitors and catalyst for organic reactions. Recently several structural derivatives of these surfactants have been developed having many interesting physicochemical properties and they have demonstrated enormous potential in the area of nanotechnology, material science and biomedical science.

Ionic Surfactant Binding to pH-Responsive Polyelectrolyte Brush-Grafted Nanoparticles in Suspension and on Charged Surfaces

The interactions between silica nanoparticles grafted with a brush of cationic poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (SiO2-g-PDMAEMA) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is investigated by dynamic light scattering, electrophoretic mobility, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy. SiO2-g-PDMAEMA exhibits pH-dependent charge and size properties which enable the SDS binding to be probed over a range of electrostatic conditions and brush conformations. SDS monomers bind irreversibly to SiO2-g-PDMAEMA at low surfactant concentrations (∼10(-4) M) while exhibiting a pH-dependent threshold above which cooperative, partially reversible SDS binding occurs. At pH 5, SDS binding induces collapse of the highly charged and swollen brush as observed in the bulk by DLS and on surfaces by QCM-D. Similar experiments at pH 9 suggest that SDS binds to the periphery of the weakly charged and deswollen brush and produces SiO2-g-PDMAEMA/SDS complexes with a net negative charge. SiO2-g-PDMAEMA brush collapse and charge neutralization is further confirmed by colloidal probe AFM measurements, where reduced electrosteric repulsions and bridging adhesion are attributed to effects of the bound SDS. Additionally, sequential adsorption schemes with SDS and SiO2-g-PDMAEMA are used to enhance deposition relative to SiO2-g-PDMAEMA direct adsorption on silica. This work shows that the polyelectrolyte brush configuration responds in a more dramatic fashion to SDS than to pH-induced changes in ionization, and this can be exploited to manipulate the structure of adsorbed layers and the corresponding forces of compression and friction between opposing surfaces.

Interactional behavior of the polyelectrolyte poly sodium 4-styrene sulphonate (NaPSS) with imidazolium based surface active ionic liquids in an aqueous medium

The present study aims to develop an understanding of the interactions between an anionic polyelectrolyte, poly sodium 4-styrene sulphonate (NaPSS), and cationic surface active imidazolium based ionic liquids (SAILs), [Cnmim][Cl] (n = 10, 12, 14) using a multi-technique approach. Various physicochemical and electrochemical techniques such as surface tension, conductivity, fluorescence, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), turbidity, potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) are employed to obtain comprehensive information about NaPSS-SAIL interactions. Different stages of interaction, corresponding to the critical aggregation concentration (cac), critical saturation concentration (Cs) and critical micelle concentration (cmc) have been observed owing to the strong electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, and the results obtained from different techniques complement each other very well. The results extracted from DLS and turbidity measurements clearly indicated that the size of the micelle like aggregates first decreases and then increases in the presence of polyelectrolyte. The binding isotherms obtained using potentiometry show a concentration dependence and the highly co-operative nature of the interactions which is attributed to aggregation of the polyelectrolyte-SAIL complexes. The diffusion coefficients (Dm) of the electroactive probe in the pure and NaPSS-SAIL mixed systems were obtained, which were further used to obtain the values of the micellar self-diffusion coefficients (D) and inter-micellar interaction parameters (kd).

Synergetic effect of sodium polystyrene sulfonate and guanidine hydrochloride on the surface properties of lysozyme solutions

A study of the dilational surface viscoelastic properties of mixed solutions of lysozyme and denaturants allows us to characterize the changes of protein tertiary structure in the surface layer upon adsorption at the liquid–gas interface.
