Abstract
With the globalization of food and its complicated networking system, a wide range of food contaminants is introduced into the food system which may happen accidentally, intentionally, or naturally. This situation has made food safety a critical global concern nowadays and urged the need for effective technologies capable of dealing with the detection of food contaminants as efficiently as possible. Hence, Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been taken as one of the primary choices for this case, due to its extremely high sensitivity, rapidity, and fingerprinting interpretation capabilities which account for its competency to detect a molecule up to a single level. Here in this paper, we present a comprehensive review of various SERS-based novel approaches applied for direct and indirect detection of single and multiple chemical and microbial contaminants in food, food products as well as water. The aim of this paper is to arouse the interest of researchers by addressing recent SERS-based, novel achievements and developments related to the investigation of hazardous chemical and microbial contaminants in edible foods and water. The target chemical and microbial contaminants are antibiotics, pesticides, food adulterants, Toxins, bacteria, and viruses. In this paper, different aspects of SERS-based reports have been addressed including synthesis and use of various forms of SERS nanostructures for the detection of a specific analyte, the coupling of SERS with other analytical tools such as chromatographic methods, combining analyte capture and recognition strategies such as molecularly imprinted polymers and aptasensor as well as using multivariate statistical analyses such as principal component analysis (PCA)to distinguish between results. In addition, we also report some strengths and limitations of SERS as well as future viewpoints concerning its application in food safety.

Abstract
This study presents a method to determine adulteration of olive oil (obtained from Olea europea, i.e. olives) with rapeseed oil (obtained from Brassica napus) or with corn oil (also named maize oil, obtained from Zea mays, i.e. maize) using Raman spectroscopy and a mathematical method based on exponential equation fit. The samples were prepared by mixing olive oil with volume fractions (0-100%) of rapeseed or corn oil. The oils were differentiated spectroscopically using intensity ratio for specific Raman peaks; Raman spectroscopy is able to detect changes within a liquid molecular environment without the need for sample treatment. It was possible to determine rapeseed or corn oil volume fractions added into the olive oil using the method proposed. Thus, the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a technique for determining adulteration of olive oil was corroborated clearly, opening the potential to investigate adulteration of other liquid foods, without any need for sample preparation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to synthesize the alginate nanogel encapsulating Artemisia ciniformis extract and to evaluate its apoptotic effects on AGS gastric cancer cells. Characterization of the synthesized nanogel was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Dynamic light scattering method (DLS), and Zeta potential. The cytotoxic effects and apoptosis induction of A. ciniformis extract, nanogel encapsulating A. ciniformis extract and alginate nanogel alone were evaluated in the AGS cell line using MTT assay, Annexin-FITC, DAPI staining, cell cycle analysis, and real-time PCR for 24, 48 and 72 h. Anti-proliferative activity and apoptosis induction were observed in the cells treated with alginate nanogel encapsulating A. ciniformis extract and free extract. The alginate nanogel encapsulating A. ciniformis extract had greater potential for the induction of apoptosis than free extract. Flow cytometric results of the cell cycle showed that synthesized nanogel encapsulating A. ciniformis extract could inhibit cell proliferation and arrest the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase. Induction of apoptosis occurred in a time-, and dose-dependent manner. Expression levels of pro-apoptotic genes were up-regulated. Down-regulation of anti-apoptotic and metastatic genes were detected. It can be concluded that nanogel encapsulating A. ciniformis extract would be a potent anticancer agent against AGS gastric cancer cells.

Abstract
Sequential plasma processes combined with specific lithographic methods allow for the fabrication of advanced material structures. In the present work, we used self-assembled colloidal monolayers as lithographic structures for the conformation of ordered Si submicrometer pillars by reactive ion etching. We explored different discharge conditions to optimize the Si pillar geometry. Selected structures were further decorated with gold by conventional sputtering, prior to colloidal monolayer lift-off. The resulting structures consist of a gold crown, that is, a cylindrical coating on the edge of the Si pillar and a cavity on top. We analysed the Au structures in terms of electronic properties by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) prior to and after post-processing with thermal annealing at 300 °C and/or interaction with a gold etchant solution (KI). The angular dependent analysis of the plasmonic properties was studied with Fourier transformed UV-vis measurements. Certain conditions were selected to perform a surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) evaluation of these platforms with two model dyes, prior to confirming the potential interest for a well-resolved analysis of filtered blood plasma.

Abstract
Pollution deriving from textile wastes, including industrial and household waste, is recently of great interest due to their environmental impacts. Anthropogenic and synthetic fibers are responsible for negative effects on the quality of water and soil, and, also, their presence damages plant and animal health. In this work, the authors revealed the occurrence of man-made cellulose fibers in specimens of Boops boops from the Northern Sicilian coasts. Bogue was chosen as target species as it has been used as an indicator within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) in order to value the "microplastics status" in the stomach contents. Of the 30 specimens examined, 63.3% of these had ingested fibers items. The number of fibers ranged from 1 to 10 per specimens with an average of 2.7 items/specimen. Fibers length ranged from 0.5 to 30 mm, most of them were black (95%), and a small percentage was red (5%). The ingestion of man-made cellulose fibers, observed for the first time, in Boops boops in the Mediterranean Sea wake-up call and it should attract the attention of the EU for new guidelines where this new type of contaminant is classified harmful as well as plastics.

Abstract
Structural and vibrational properties of free base, cationic and hydrochloride species derived from both S(-) and R(+) enantiomers of antihistaminic promethazine (PTZ) agent have been theoretically evaluated in gas phase and in aqueous solution by using the hybrid B3LYP/6-31G* calculations. The initial structures of S(-) and R(+) enantiomers of hydrochloride PTZ were those polymorphic forms 1 and 2 experimentally determined by X-ray diffraction. Here, all structures in aqueous solution were optimized at the same level of theory by using the polarized continuum (PCM) and the universal solvation model. As was experimentally reported, variations in the unit cell lead to slight energy, density, and melting point differences between the two forms but, this behavior is not carried through in isotropic condition, like in solution with non-chiral solvents. Hence, the N-C distances, Mulliken, atomic natural population (NPA) and Merz-Kollman (MK) charges, bond orders, stabilization and solvation energies, frontier orbitals, some descriptors and their topological properties were compared with the antihistaminic cyclizine agent. The frontier orbitals studies show that the free base species of both forms in solution are more reactive than cyclizine. Higher electrophilicity indexes are observed in the cationic and hydrochloride species of PTZ than cyclizine while the cationic species of cyclizine have higher nucleophilicity index than both species of PTZ. The presences of bands attributed to cationic species of both enantiomers are clearly supported by the infrared and Raman spectra in the solid phase. The expected 114, 117 and 120 vibration normal modes for the free base, cationic and hydrochloride species of both forms were completely assigned and the force constants reported. Reasonable concordances among the predicted infrared, Raman, UV-Vis and Electronic Circular Dichroism (ECD) with the corresponding experimental ones were found.

Abstract
Sterile inflammation (SI) is an essential process in response to snakebite and injury. The venom induced pathophysiological response to sterile inflammation results into many harmful and deleterious effects that ultimately leads to death. The available treatment for snakebite is antiserum which does not provide enough protection against venom-induced pathophysiological changes like haemorrhage, necrosis, nephrotoxicity and often develop hypersensitive reactions. In order to overcome these hindrances, scientists around the globe are searching for an alternative therapy to provide better treatment to the snake envenomation patients. In the present study TiO2 (Titanium dioxide)-NPs (Nanoparticles) has been assessed for antisnake venom activity and its potential to be used as an antidote. In this study, the synthesis of TiO2-NPs arrays has been demonstrated on p-type Silicon Si < 100 > substrate (∼30 ohm-cm) and the surface topography has been detected by Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The TiO2-NPs successfully neutralized the Daboia russelii venom (DRV) and Naja kaouthia venom (NKV)-induced lethal activity. Viper venom induced haemorrhagic, coagulant and anticoagulant activities were effectively neutralized both in in-vitro and in vivo studies. The cobra and viper venoms-induced sterile inflammatory molecules (IL-6, HMGB1, HSP70, HSP90, S100B and vWF) were effectively neutralised by the TiO2-NPs in experimental animals.

Abstract
Rapid measurements of protein and oil content are important for a variety of uses, from sorting of soybeans at the point of harvest to feedback during soybean meal production. In this study, our goal is to develop a simple protocol to permit rapid and robust quantitative prediction of soybean constituents using transmission Raman spectroscopy (TRS). To develop this approach, we systematically varied the various elements of the measurement process to provide a diverse test bed. First, we utilized an in-house-built benchtop TRS instrument such that suitable optical configurations could be rapidly deployed and analyzed for experimental data collection for individual soybean grains. Second, we also utilized three different soybean varieties with relatively low (33.97%), medium (36.98%), and high protein (41.23%) contents to test the development process. Third, samples from each variety were prepared using whole bean and three different sample treatments (i.e., ground bean, whole meal, and ground meal). In each case, we modeled the data obtained using partial least squares (PLS) regression and assessed spectral metric-based multiple linear regression (metric-MLR) approaches to build robust prediction models. The metric-MLR models showed lower root mean square errors (RMSEPs), and hence better prediction, compared to corresponding classical PLS regression models for both bulk protein and oil for all treatment types. Comparing different sample preparation approaches, a lower RMSEPs was observed for whole meal treatment and thus the metric-MLR modeling with ground meal treatment was considered to be optimal protocol for bulk protein and oil prediction in soybean, with RMSEP values of 1.15 ± 0.04 (R2 = 0.87) and 0.80 ± 0.02 (R2 = 0.87) for bulk protein and oil, respectively. These predictions were nearly two- to threefold better (i.e., lower RMSEPs) than the corresponding NIR spectroscopy measurements (i.e., secondary gold standards in grain industry). For content prediction in whole soybean, incorporating physical attributes of individual grains in metric-MLR approach show up to 22% improvement in bulk protein and a relatively mild (up to ∼5%) improvement in bulk oil prediction. The unique combination of metric-MLR modeling approach (which is rare in the field of grain analysis) and sample treatments resulted in improved prediction models; using the physical attributes of individual grains is suggested as a novel measure for improving accuracy in prediction.

Abstract
Electron-phonon coupling in monolayer graphene results in a modification of its Raman spectra upon charge transfer processes induced by interaction with its chemical environment or the presence of strain or defects in its structure. Modification of Raman spectra is examined in order to develop ultra-sensitive biosensing techniques for the detection, identification, differentiation and classification of bacteria associated with infectious diseases. Specifically, the electrochemical properties of top gated monolayer graphene on SiO2/Si substrates, in the absence and presence of interaction with Gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium), are probed by Raman spectroscopy in an applied voltage range from 0 V to 3 V. Bacteria and monolayer graphene interactions are thus electrostatically tuned. The resulting correlation of specific bacterial chemical properties and Raman spectral characteristics is reported, along with density functional theory simulations of the charge transfer mechanism. The intensities of the G and D Raman vibrational modes are modulated as a function of the applied voltage in the presence of bacteria, but remain unchanged in bare monolayer graphene. A fingerprint region is also identified in the range of 200 cm-1 to 600 cm-1, with disulfide bonds observed at 490 cm-1, associated with bacterial membrane proteins. Significantly, such observations are detected even in the absence of bacterial culturing, a time-consuming step.

Abstract
Chemical compositions of mushrooms are greatly dependent on the geographical region, and also the different parts of the same mushroom have different chemical constitutions. Several chemical methods are employed for quality control of mushrooms. However, these methods are destructive, require skilled personnel and are time consuming. To overcome these limitations researchers are aiming for vibrational spectroscopic techniques. This review is focused on various studies related to the application of vibrational spectroscopy for classification, authentication and quality analysis of mushrooms. It was concluded that vibrational spectroscopy could be efficiently employed for assessing the quality, authenticity and geographical origin of the mushrooms. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were the most explored, whereas, Raman spectroscopy is the least explored technique in this field. Compact and cost-effective spectrometers based on the selective wavelengths have to be designed and installed at commercial and industrial level for rapid quality control of mushrooms.

Abstract
This work presents a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and density functional theory (DFT) study of a fipronil adsorbed on colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A standard curve was established to quantify fipronil within a range of 0.0001⁻0.1 ppm (r² ≥ 0.985), relying on the unique fipronil Raman shift at ~2236 cm-1 adsorbed on AgNPs. DFT calculations suggest that the nitrile moiety (C≡N) binding should be slightly more favorable, by 1.92 kcal/mol, than those of the nitrogen atom of the pyrazole in fipronil and Ag₆ atom clusters. The characteristic peaks of the SERS spectrum were identified, and both the calculated vibrational wavenumbers and the Raman intensity pattern were considered. The vibrational spectra of fipronil were obtained from the potential energy distribution (PED) analysis and selective Raman band enhancement.

Abstract
Brillouin light scattering (BLS), a technique theoretically described nearly a century back by the French physicist Léon Brillouin in 1922, is a light-scattering method for determining the mechanical properties of materials. This inelastic scattering method is described by the Bragg diffraction of light from a propagating fluctuation in the local dielectric. These fluctuations arise spontaneously from thermally populated sound waves intrinsic to all materials, and thus BLS may be broadly applied to transparent samples of any phase. This review begins with a brief historical overview of the development of BLS, from its theoretical prediction to the current state of the art, and notes specific technological advancements that enabled the development of BLS. Despite the broad utility of BLS, no commercial spectrometer is currently available for purchase, but rather individual components are assembled to suit a specific application. Central to any BLS spectrometer is the interferometer, and its performance characteristics-scanning or non-scanning, multi-passing, and stabilization-are critical considerations for spectrometer design. Consistent with any light-scattering method, the frequency shift is a key observable in BLS, and we summarize the connection of this measurement to evaluate the mechanical properties of materials. With emphasis toward pharmaceutical materials analysis, we introduce the traditional BLS approach for single-crystal elasticity, and this is followed by a discussion of more recent developments in powder BLS. We conclude our review with a perspective on future developments in BLS that may enable BLS as a novel addition to the current catalog of process analytical technologies.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is commonly used as a color additive in food products. In this study, a total of 11 food products, such as a coffee cream, yogurt snack, hard candy, and chewy candy, that are widely consumed by adults or children were investigated. For characterization of particle size, size distribution, crystallinity, and concentration of TiO2, particles were first extracted using an acid digestion method from food, and various analytical techniques were applied. All products investigated in this study contained nanosized TiO2 particles (21.3-53.7%) in the anatase phase. The particle size of TiO2 was in the range of 26.9-463.2 nm. The concentration of TiO2 in the products ranged from 0.015% (150 ppm) to 0.462% (4620 ppm). These values obtained using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were considered as the reference and were compared with Raman results to evaluate the feasibility of using the Raman method to quantitate TiO2 in food products. The Raman method developed in this study proved to effectively analyze anatase TiO2 in food products at levels of several hundred parts per million or greater. Limitations of using the Raman method as a quick screening tool for determination of TiO2 are also discussed.

Abstract
Rapid and reliable determination of atrazine, a common chemical contaminant, in agri-foods is highly necessary. We reported a novel dual-chemosensor coupling, a separation [molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs)], an instrumental-free detection [gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based colorimetric assay] and an instrument-based quantification [surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)] method for high-throughput and sensitive determination of atrazine in apple juice. Used as the selective sorbent for the solid phase extraction, MIPs effectively extracted atrazine from apple juice with high recoveries (∼93%). AuNPs of different sizes (large; medium; and small) performed differently in the two analytical methods. Large-AuNPs provided the highest sensitivity in colorimetric analysis (<0.01 mg L-1), while medium-AuNPs achieved the lowest limit of detection (0.0012 mg L-1) and quantification (0.0040 mg L-1) in SERS analysis. With minor modifications, protocols for both analytical methods can rapidly detect and/or quantify atrazine in different food products complying with the Health Canada regulation (0.005 mg L-1).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the atorvastatin (ATV) content in process pharmaceutical powder sample using Raman spectroscopy. To establish the analysis method, the influence of the type of Raman measurements (back-scattering or transmission mode), preparation of calibration sample (simple admixing or granulation), sample pre-treatment (pelletization), and spectral pretreatment on the Raman spectra was investigated. The characteristic peak of the active compound was more distinctively detected in transmission Raman mode with a laser spot size of 4mm than in the back-scattering method. Preparation of calibration samples by wet granulation, identical to the actual manufacturing process, provided unchanged spectral patterns for the in process sample, with no changes and/or shifts in the spectrum. Pelletization before Raman analysis remarkably improved spectral reproducibility by decreasing the difference in density between the samples. Probabilistic quotient normalization led to accurate and consistent quantification of the ATV content in the calibration samples (standard error of cross validation: 1.21%). Moreover, the drug content in the granules obtained from five commercial batches were reliably quantified, with no statistical difference (p=0.09) with that obtained by HPLC assay. From these findings, we suggest that transmission Raman analysis may be a fast and non-invasive method for the quantification of ATV in actual manufacturing processes.

Abstract
The adulteration of milk fat in dairy products with cheaper non-milk based fats or oils is frequently encountered in the dairy industry. In this study, Raman spectroscopy with chemometric was used for the discrimination of foreign fats and oils in milk cream and yogurt. Firstly, binary mixtures of cream and oils (corn and sunflower oil), and vegetable fat blends which are potentially or currently used by the dairy industry were prepared. All fat or oil samples and their binary mixtures were examined by using Raman spectroscopy. Then, fat content of skim milk was adjusted to 3% (w/w) by the milk fat, external oils or fats, and binary mixtures, and was used in yogurt production. The lipid fraction of yogurt was extracted and characterized by Raman spectroscopy. The spectral data were then pre-processed and principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. Raman spectral data showed successful discrimination for about the source of the fats or oils. Temperature effect was also studied at six different temperatures (25, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C) in order to obtain the best spectral information. Raman spectra collected at higher temperatures were more intense. Obtained results showed that the performance of Raman spectroscopy with PCA was very promising and can be expected to provide a simple and quick way for the discrimination of foreign fats and oils in both milk cream and yogurt. Fermentation and yogurt processing affected clustering of fat samples by PCA, probably depending on some lipolysis or production of new products that can affect the Raman scattering. However, those changes did not affect differentiation of samples by Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract
The rapid development of nanotechnology has transformed many domains of food science, especially those that involve the processing, packaging, storage, transportation, functionality, and other safety aspects of food. A wide range of nanostructured materials (NSMs), from inorganic metal, metal oxides, and their nanocomposites to nano-organic materials with bioactive agents, has been applied to the food industry. Despite the huge benefits nanotechnology has to offer, there are emerging concerns regarding the use of nanotechnology, as the accumulation of NSMs in human bodies and in the environment can cause several health and safety hazards. Therefore, safety and health concerns as well as regulatory policies must be considered while manufacturing, processing, intelligently and actively packaging, and consuming nano-processed food products. This review aims to provide a basic understanding regarding the applications of nanotechnology in the food packaging and processing industries and to identify the future prospects and potential risks associated with the use of NSMs.

Abstract
Raman scattering and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy have demonstrated their potential as ultrasensitive detection techniques in the past decades. Specifically, and as a result of the flourishing of nanotechnology, SERS is nowadays one of the most powerful sensing techniques, not only because of the low detection limits that it can achieve, but also for the structural information that it offers and its capability of multiplexing. Similarly, microfluidics technology is having an increased presence not only in fundamental research, but also in the industry. The latter is because of the intrinsic characteristics of microfluidics, being automation, high-throughput, and miniaturization. However, despite miniaturization being an advantage, it comes together with the need to use ultrasensitive techniques for the interrogation of events happening in extremely small volumes. The combination of SERS with microfluidics can overcome bottlenecks present in both technologies. As a consequence, the integration of Raman and SERS in microfluidics is being investigated for the label-free biosensing of relevant research challenges.

Abstract
Food safety has become an important public health issue in both developed and developing countries. However, as the foodborne illnesses caused by the pollution of foodborne pathogens occurred frequently, which seriously endangered the safety and health of human beings. More importantly, the traditional techniques, such as PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, are accurate and effective, but their pretreatments are complex and time-consuming. Therefore, how to detect foodborne pathogens quickly and sensitively has become the key to control food safety. Because of its sensitivity, rapidity, and non-destructive damage to the sample, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is considered to be a powerful testing technology that is widely used to different fields. This review aims to give a systematic and comprehensive understanding of SERS for rapid detection of pathogen bacteria. First, the related concepts of SERS are stated, such as its work principal, active substrate, and biochemical origins of the detection of bacteria by SERS. Then the latest progress and applications in food safety, from detection and characterization of targets in label-free method to label method, is summarized. The advantages and limitations of different SERS substrates and methods are discussed. Finally, there are still several hurdles for the further development of SERS techniques into real-world applications. This review comes up with the perspectives on the future trends of the SERS technique in the field of foodborne pathogens detection and some problems to be solved urgently. Therefore, the purpose is mainly to understand the detection of foodborne pathogens and to make further emphasis on the importance of SERS techniques.

Abstract
The serious cytotoxicity of tyramine attracted marked attention as it induced necrosis of human intestinal cells. This paper presented a novel and facile high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method tailored for screening tyramine in cheese. Separation was performed on glass backed silica gel plates, using methanol/ethyl acetate/ ammonia (6/4/1 v/v/v) as the mobile phase. Special efforts were focused on optimizing conditions (substrate preparation, laser wavelength, salt types and concentrations) of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) measurements directly on plates after derivatization, which enabled molecule-specific identification of targeted bands. In parallel, fluorescent densitometry (FLD) scanning at 380</400 nm offered satisfactory quantitative performances (LOD 9 ng/zone, LOQ 17 ng/zone, linearity 0.9996 and %RSD 6.7). Including a quick extraction/cleanup step, the established method was successfully validated with different cheese samples, both qualitatively (straightforward confirmation) and quantitatively (recovery rates from 83.7 to 108.5%). Beyond this application, HPTLC-FLD-SERS provided a new horizon in fast and reliable screening of sophisticated samples like food and herb drugs, striking an excellent balance between specificity, sensitivity and simplicity.

Abstract
Fitting experimentally measured Raman bands with theoretical model profiles is the basic operation for numerical determination of Raman peak parameters. In order to investigate the effects of peak modeling using various algorithms on peak fitting results, the representative Raman bands of mineral crystals, glass, fluids as well as the emission lines from a fluorescent lamp, some of which were measured under ambient light whereas others under elevated pressure and temperature conditions, were fitted using Gaussian, Lorentzian, Gaussian-Lorentzian, Voigtian, Pearson type IV, and beta profiles. From the fitting results of the Raman bands investigated in this study, the fitted peak position, intensity, area and full width at half-maximum (FWHM) values of the measured Raman bands can vary significantly depending upon which peak profile function is used in the fitting, and the most appropriate fitting profile should be selected depending upon the nature of the Raman bands. Specifically, the symmetric Raman bands of mineral crystals and non-aqueous fluids are best fit using Gaussian-Lorentzian or Voigtian profiles, whereas the asymmetric Raman bands are best fit using Pearson type IV profiles. The asymmetric O-H stretching vibrations of H2O and the Raman bands of soda-lime glass are best fit using several Gaussian profiles, whereas the emission lines from a florescent light are best fit using beta profiles. Multiple peaks that are not clearly separated can be fit simultaneously, provided the residuals in the fitting of one peak will not affect the fitting of the remaining peaks to a significant degree. Once the resolution of the Raman spectrometer has been properly accounted for, our findings show that the precision in peak position and intensity can be improved significantly by fitting the measured Raman peaks with appropriate profiles. Nevertheless, significant errors in peak position and intensity were still observed in the results from fitting of weak and wide Raman bands having unnormalized intensity/FWHM ratios lower than 200 counts/cm-1.

Abstract
Nanomaterial-based sensing approaches that incorporate different types of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructures in conjunction with natural or synthetic receptors as molecular recognition elements provide opportunities for the design of sensitive and selective assays for rapid detection of contaminants. This review summarizes recent advancements over the past ten years in the development of nanotechnology-enabled sensors and systems for capture and detection of pathogens. The most common types of nanostructures and NPs, their modification with receptor molecules and integration to produce viable sensing systems with biorecognition, amplification and signal readout are discussed. Examples of all-in-one systems that combine multifunctional properties for capture, separation, inactivation and detection are also provided. Current trends in the development of low-cost instrumentation for rapid assessment of food contamination are discussed as well as challenges for practical implementation and directions for future research.

Abstract
The elimination of disease-causing microbes from the food supply is a primary goal and this review deals with the overall techniques available for detection of food-borne pathogens. Now-a-days conventional methods are replaced by advanced methods like Biosensors, Nucleic Acid-based Tests (NAT), and different PCR-based techniques used in molecular biology to identify specific pathogens. Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., and pathogens are detected in contaminated food items that cause always diseases in human in any one or the other way. Identification of food-borne pathogens in a short period of time is still a challenge to the scientific field in general and food technology in particular. The low level of food contamination by major pathogens requires specific sensitive detection platforms and the present area of hot research looking forward to new nanomolecular techniques for nanomaterials, make them suitable for the development of assays with high sensitivity, response time, and portability. With the sound of these, we attempt to highlight a comprehensive overview about food-borne pathogen detection by rapid, sensitive, accurate, and cost affordable in situ analytical methods from conventional methods to recent molecular approaches for advanced food and microbiology research.

Abstract
Carlina genus plants e.g. Carlina acanthifolia subsp. utzka have been still used in folk medicine of many European countries and its biological activity is mostly associated with root essential oils. In the present paper, Raman spectroscopy (RS) was applied for the first time for evaluation of essential oil distribution in root of C. acnthifolia subsp. utzka and identification of root structures containing the essential oil. Furthermore, RS technique was applied to assess chemical stability of oil during drying of plant material or distillation process. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the essential oil. The identity of compounds was confirmed using Raman, ATR-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Carlina oxide was found to be the main component of the oil (98.96% ± 0.15). The spectroscopic study showed the high stability of essential oil and Raman distribution analysis indicated that the oil reservoirs were localized mostly in the structures of outer layer of the root while the inner part showed nearly no signal assigned to the oil. Raman spectroscopy technique enabled rapid, non-destructive direct analysis of plant material with minimal sample preparation and allowed straightforward, unambiguous identification of the essential oil in the sample.

Abstract
A new transmission Raman spectrometer has been developed using a spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS), taking advantage of the high etendue inherent in this class of spectrometer to maximize the light collected from the target. The system has been tested against paracetamol tablet samples. The instrument has been shown to accept light from 0.05 mm up to a 3 mm core diameter fibre bundle with a numerical aperture of 0.22, whilst no degradation in resolution is observed.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring toxic chemical substances, produced mainly by microscopic filamentous fungal species. Regarding potential synergisms or even mitigating effects between toxic elements, mycotoxin contamination will continue to be an area of concern for producers, manufacturers, regulatory agencies, researchers, and consumers in the future. In Serbia, recent drought and then flooding confirmed that mycotoxins are one of the foodborne hazards most susceptible to climate change. In this article, we review key aspects of mycotoxin contamination of the food supply chain and implications for public health from the Serbian perspective.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy followed by multivariate data analysis was used to analyze cotton fibers dyed using similar formulations and submitted to different aging conditions. Spectra were collected on a commercial instrument using a near-infrared laser with a 780nm light source. Discriminant analysis allowed to correctly classify the aged fibers 100% of the time. The prediction ability of the calculated model was estimated to be 100% by the "leave-one-out" cross-validation for 3 out of the 4 series under investigation. Finally, reliability of the developed approach for the discrimination of aged vs new fibers was confirmed by the analysis of commercial polyamide and polyester textiles submitted to the same aging process.

Abstract
We present the creation of a unique nanostructured amorphous/crystalline hybrid silicon material that exhibits surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. This nanomaterial is an interconnected network of amorphous/crystalline nanospheroids which form a nanoweb structure; to our knowledge this material has not been previously observed nor has it been applied for use as a SERS sensing material. This material is formed using a femtosecond synthesis technique which facilitates a laser plume ion condensation formation mechanism. By fine-tuning the laser plume temperature and ion interaction mechanisms within the plume, we are able to precisely program the relative proportion of crystalline Si to amorphous Si content in the nanospheroids as well as the size distribution of individual nanospheroids and the size of Raman hotspot nanogaps. With the use of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Crystal Violet (CV) chemical dyes, we have been able to observe a maximum enhancement factor of 5.38 × 106 and 3.72 × 106 respectively, for the hybrid nanomaterial compared to a bulk Si wafer substrate. With the creation of a silicon-based nanomaterial capable of SERS detection of analytes, this work demonstrates a redefinition of the role of nanostructured Si from an inactive to SERS active role in nano-Raman sensing applications.

Abstract
Genetically modified (GM) crops are a major product of the global food industry. From 1996 to 2014, 357 GM crops were approved and the global value of the GM crop market reached 35% of the global commercial seed market in 2014. However, the rapid growth of the GM crop-based industry has also created controversies in many regions, including the European Union, Egypt, and Taiwan. The effective detection and regulation of GM crops/foods are necessary to reduce the impact of these controversies. In this review, the status of GM crops and the technology for their detection are discussed. As the primary gap in GM crop regulation exists in the application of detection technology to field regulation, efforts should be made to develop an integrated, standardized, and high-throughput GM crop detection system. We propose the development of an integrated GM crop detection system, to be used in combination with a standardized international database, a decision support system, high-throughput DNA analysis, and automated sample processing. By integrating these technologies, we hope that the proposed GM crop detection system will provide a method to facilitate comprehensive GM crop regulation.

Abstract
Naturally occurring polymers such as alginate (AL) and chitosan (CS) are widely used in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields in various forms such as nanoparticles, capsules, and emulsions. These polymers have attractive applications in drug delivery because of their biodegradability, biocompatibility, and nontoxic nature. The pharmaceutical applications of essential oils such as turmeric oil and lemongrass oil are well-known, and their active components, arturmerone and citral, respectively, are known for their antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. However, these essential oils are unstable, volatile, and insoluble in water, which limits their use for new formulations. Therefore, this study focuses on developing a CS–AL nanocarrier for the encapsulation of essential oils. The effects of process parameters such as the effect of heat and the concentrations of AL and CS were investigated. Various physicochemical characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy were performed. Results of characterization studies showed that 0.3 mg/mL AL and 0.6 mg/mL CS produced minimum-sized particles (<300 nm) with good stability. It was also confirmed that the oil-loaded nanocapsules were hemocompatible, suggesting their use for future biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Furthermore, the antiproliferative activity of turmeric oil- and lemongrass oil-loaded nanocapsules was estimated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay in A549 cell lines and it was found that both the nanoformulations had significant antiproliferative properties than the bare oil.
