Occurrences and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in drinking water and water/sewage treatment plants: A review

The development and application of a novel hazard scoring tool for assessing impacts of cosmetic ingredients on aquatic ecosystems: A case study of rinse-off cosmetics

The cosmetic industry has been committed to promoting less hazardous products to reduce the environmental impacts of cosmetic ingredients. This requires identifying safer cosmetic ingredients for developing cosmetic formulations that are less harmful to the environment. However, one of the challenges in developing eco-friendly cosmetics relies on integrating all environmental hazard (EH) information of cosmetic ingredients to select the most eco-friendly ones (i.e., ingredients least harmful to the aquatic environment). Thus, we developed a hazard scoring tool (IARA matrix), which integrates data on biodegradation, bioaccumulation, and acute aquatic toxicity, providing a hazard index to classify cosmetic ingredients (raw materials) into categories of EH (low, moderate, high, or very high). The classification of the IARA was based on parameters established by Cradle to Cradle (C2C), the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and European Regulation 1272/2008, considering the most conservative values of each source. The Leopold matrix was employed as a model for the tool, using a numerical scale from 0 to 6 (lowest to highest EH). According to the IARA, we have successfully demonstrated that ultraviolet (UV) filter ingredients have the highest EH out of 41 cosmetic ingredients commonly used for rinse-off products. In addition to UV filters, triclosan (bactericide) and dimethicone (emollient) presented the second-highest EH for aquatic ecosystems, and humectants presented the lowest hazard index. By applying the IARA in the case study of rinse-off products, we have estimated that the aquatic hazard of cosmetic products can be reduced 46% by identifying less hazardous ingredients and combining them into a cosmetic formulation. In summary, the IARA tool allows the estimation of the EH of cosmetic ingredients, provides safer products, and helps achieve sustainability for cosmetic products. Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in aquatic products processing sewage treatment plants

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments have attracted attention due to their wide distribution and potential ecotoxicities. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are proven to be the major source of ECs in the aquatic environment, while there remains insufficient understanding of the removal and risk assessment of ECs in STPs. Here, we clarified the degradation and risk impact of 13 ECs in two aquatic product processing sewage treatment plants (APPSTPs) along the southeast coast of China. The concentrations of ECs followed the order: endocrine-disrupting chemicals (1877.85-15,398.02 ng/L in influent, 3.37-44.47 ng/L in effluent) >  > sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs, 75.14-906.19 ng/L in influent, 1.14-15.33 ng/L in effluent) > pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs, 44.47-589.93 ng/L in influent, 2.54-34.16 ng/L in effluent) ≈ fluoroquinolone antibiotic (54.76-434.83 ng/L in influent, 10.75-32.82 ng/L in effluent) > other antibiotics (16.21-51.96 ng/L in influent, 0.68-6.17 ng/L in effluent). Moreover, the concentrations of PPCPs (decreased by 55.33-87.65% in peak fishing season) and antibiotics (increased by 44.99% in peak fishing season) were affected by fishing activities. In particular, the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process had a better removal effect than the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) process on the treatment of some contaminants (e.g., norfloxacin and nonylphenol). Risk evaluations of ECs demonstrated that nonylphenol and SAs were at high- and low-risk states, respectively. Overall, our results provide important information for the degradation treatment of ECs, which is essential for pollutant management policy formulation.

Critical analysis on the transformation and upgrading strategy of Chinese municipal wastewater treatment plants: Towards sustainable water remediation and zero carbon emissions

In the light of circular economy aspects, processing of large-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) needs reconsideration to limit the overuse of energy, implement of non-green technologies and emit abundant greenhouse gas. Along with the huge increase in the worldwide population and agro-industrial activities, global environmental organizations have issued several recent roles to boost scientific and industrial communities towards sustainable development. Over recent years, China has imposed national and regional standards to control and manage the discharged liquid and solid waste, as well as to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The aim of this report is to analyze the current state of Chinese WWTPs routing and related issues such as climate change and air pollution. The used strategies in Chinese WWTPs and upgrading trends were critically discussed. Several points were addressed including the performance, environmental impact, and energy demand of bio-enhanced technologies, including hydrolytic acidification pretreatment, efficient (toxic) strain treatment, and anaerobic ammonia oxidation denitrification technology, as well as advanced treatment technologies composed of physical and chemical treatment technologies, biological treatment technology and combined treatment technology. Discussion and critical analysis based on the current data and national policies were provided and employed to develop the future development trend of municipal WWTPs in China from the construction of sustainable and "Zero carbon" WWTPs.

Pharmaceutically active compounds in aqueous environment: recent developments in their fate, occurrence and elimination for efficient water purification

The existence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the water is a major concern for environmentalists due to their deleterious effects on living organisms even at minuscule concentrations. This review focuses on PhACs such as analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are massively excreted in urine and account for the majority of pharmaceutical pollution. Furthermore, other PhACs such as anti-epileptics, beta-blockers and antibiotics are discussed because they also contribute significantly to pharmaceutical pollution in the aquatic environment. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, different classes of PhACs and their fate in the wastewater environment are presented. In the second part, recent advances in the removal of PhACs by conventional wastewater treatment plants, including membrane bioreactors (MBRs), activated carbon adsorption and bench-scale studies concerning a broad range of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that render practical and appropriate strategies for the complete mineralization and degradation of pharmaceutical drugs, are reviewed. This review indicates that drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, paracetamol and aspirin are removed efficiently by conventional systems. Activated carbon adsorption is suitable for the removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine, whereas AOPs are leading water treatment strategies for the effective removal of reviewed PhACs.

Strategy for improvement of molecular oxygen activation capacity of PPECu by chlorine doping for water decontamination

The activation of molecular oxygen and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in the efficient removal of contaminants from aqueous ecosystems. Herein, using a simple and rapid solvothermal process, we developed a chlorine-doped phenylethynylcopper (Cl/PPECu) photocatalyst and applied it to visible light degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) in aqueous media. The Cl/PPECu was optimized to have a 2.52 times higher steady-state concentration of O2•- (3.62 × 10-5 M) and a 28.87 times higher degradation rate constant (0.2252 min-1) for SMT compared to pure PPECu. Further, the effectiveness of Cl/PPECu in treating sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in real water systems was verified through an investigation involving natural water bodies, SAs, and ambient sunlight. The energy band structure, DFT calculation and correlation heat map indicated that the addition of chlorine modulated the local electronic structure of PPECu, leading to an improvement in the electron-hole separation, enhanced the O2 activation, and promoted the generation of ROSs. This study not only puts forward innovative ideas for the eco-compatible remediation of environmental pollution using PPECu, but also sheds new light on the activation of oxygen through elemental doping.

Dissipation of twelve organic micropollutants in three different soils: Effect of soil characteristics and microbial composition

The dissipation kinetics and half-lives of selected organic micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and others, were systematically investigated and compared among different soil types. While some pollutants (e.g., atorvastatin, valsartan, and bisphenol S) disappeared rapidly in all the tested soils, many of them (e.g., telmisartan, memantine, venlafaxine, and azithromycin) remained persistent. Irrespective of the soil characteristics, venlafaxine showed the lowest dissipation kinetics and the longest half-lives (250 to approximately 500 days) among the stable compounds. The highest first and second-order kinetics were, however, recorded for valsartan (k1; 0.262 day-1) and atorvastatin (k2; 33.8 g μg-1 day-1) respectively. Nevertheless, more than 90% (i.e., DT90) of all the rapidly dissipated compounds (i.e., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) disappeared from the tested soils within a short timescale (i.e., 5-36 days). Dissipation of pollutants that are more susceptible to microbial degradation (e.g., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) seems to be slower for soils possessing the lowest microbial biomass C (Cmic) and total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAtotal), which also found statistically significant. Our results revealing the persistence of several organic pollutants in agricultural soils, which might impact the quality of these soils, the groundwater, and eventually on the related biota, is of high environmental significance.

Occurrence, distribution, and potential ecological risks of antibiotics in a seasonal freeze-thaw basin

Antibiotics have gained increasing attention as pharmaceuticals widely existing in human society. Under low temperature conditions, antibiotics tend to have higher environmental persistence, which poses a potential threat to ecological environment, but research on antibiotics in low-temperature basins is still lacking. Therefore, for investigating occurrence, spatio-temporal distributions, and ecological risks of antibiotics in a seasonal freeze-thaw basin, rivers in Tumen River basin were selected and sampled, including 25 samples during the river-freezing season and 27 samples during the non-freezing season. Overall, climate characteristics of different latitudes and renewal frequency of antibiotics are important factors that lead to diversity of antibiotics in basins. Eleven target antibiotics were detected and their average concentrations during the river-freezing season (0.83-27.5 ng L-1) were lower than that during the non-freezing season (2.80-45.30 ng L-1), severely impacted by river flow, ice sealed-melting, and local feeding practices. In addition, total antibiotic concentrations are usually highest in downstream areas of human settlements, receiving input from husbandry and sewage, respectively. Through ecological risk assessment, norfloxacin and amoxicillin posed high risks to algae, which were identified as high-risk pollutants in basin.

A Theoretical Study on the Degradation Mechanism, Kinetics, and Ecotoxicity of Metronidazole (MNZ) in •OH- and SO4•--Assisted Advanced Oxidation Processes

Metronidazole (MNZ), a typical example of nitroimidazole antibiotics, is widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by anaerobic bacteria. The degradation mechanism and kinetics of MNZ in the presence of HO• and SO4•- were studied using density functional theory (DFT). It was confirmed that both HO• and SO4•- easily added to the carbon atom bonded to the NO2 group in the MNZ molecule as the most feasible reaction channel. This study shows that subsequent reactions of the most important product (M-P) include the O2 addition, hydrogen abstraction and bond breakage mechanisms. The rate constants of HO• and SO4•--initiated MNZ in the aqueous phase were calculated in the temperature range of 278-318 K. The total rate constants of MNZ with HO• and SO4•- were determined to be 8.52 × 109 and 1.69 × 109 M-1s-1 at 298 K, which were consistent with experimental values of (3.54 ± 0.42) × 109 and (2.74 ± 0.13) × 109 M-1s-1, respectively. The toxicity of MNZ and its degradation products to aquatic organisms has been predicted. The results proposed that the toxicity of the initial degradation product (M-P) was higher than that of MNZ. However, further degradation products of MNZ induced by HO• were not harmful to three aquatic organisms (fish, daphnia, and green algae). This study provides a comprehensive theoretical basis for understanding the degradation behavior of MNZ.

Effects of diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and wastewater from constructed wetlands on Eisenia fetida: impacts on mortality, fertility, and oxidative stress

Soil contamination with micropollutants is an important global problem and the impact of these pollutants on living organisms cannot be underestimated. The effects of diclofenac (DCF) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), their mixture (MIX), and wastewater containing these drugs on the mortality and reproduction of Eisenia fetida were investigated. The impact on the activities of antioxidant enzymes in earthworm cells was also assessed. Furthermore, the influence of the following parameters of the vertical flow constructed wetlands on wastewater toxicity was investigated: the dosing system, the presence of pharmaceuticals and the plants Miscanthus giganteus. The compounds and their mixture significantly affected the reproduction and mortality of earthworms. The calculated values of LC50,28 days values were 3.4 ± 0.3 mg kg-1 for DCF, 1.6 ± 0.3 mg kg-1 for SMX, and 0.9 ± 0.1 mg kg-1 for MIX. The EC50 (reproduction assay) for DCF was 1.2 ± 0.2 mg kg-1, whereas for SMX, it was 0.4 ± 0.1 mg kg-1, and for MIX, it was 0.3 ± 0.1 mg kg-1, respectively. The mixture toxicity index (MTI) was calculated to determine drug interactions. For both E. fetida mortality (MTI = 3.29) and reproduction (MTI = 3.41), the index was greater than 1, suggesting a synergistic effect of the mixture. We also observed a negative effect of wastewater (raw and treated) on mortality (32% for raw and 8% for treated wastewater) and fertility (66% and 39%, respectively) of E. fetida. It is extremely important to analyze the harmfulness of microcontaminants to organisms inhabiting natural environments, especially in the case of wastewater for irrigation of agricultural fields.

Microbial degradation and transformation of PPCPs in aquatic environment: A review

The Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) presence at harmful levels has been identified in aquatic ecosystems all over the world. Currently, PPCPs are more common in aquatic regions and have been discovered to be extremely harmful to aquatic creatures. Waste-water treatment facilities are the primary cause of PPCPs pollution in aquatic systems due to their limited treatment as well as the following the release of PPCPs. The degree of PPCPs elimination is primarily determined by the method applied for the remediation. It must be addressed in an eco-friendly manner in order to significantly improve the environmental quality or, at the very least, to prevent the spread as well as effects of toxic pollutants. However, when compared to other methods, environmentally friendly strategies (biological methods) are less expensive and require less energy. Most biological methods under aerobic conditions have been shown to degrade PPCPs effectively. Furthermore, the scientific literature indicates that with the exception of a few extremely hydrophobic substances, biological degradation by microbes is the primary process for the majority of PPCPs compounds. Hence, this review discusses about the optimistic role of microbe concerned in the degradation or transformation of PPCPs into non/less toxic form in the polluted environment. Accordingly, more number of microbial strains has been implicated in the biodegradation/transformation of harmful PPCPs through a process termed as bioremediation and their limitations.

Occurrence, environmental impact and fate of pharmaceuticals in groundwater and surface water: a critical review

In many nations and locations, groundwater serves as the population's primary drinking water supply. However, pharmaceuticals found in groundwater and surface waters may affect aquatic ecosystems and public health. As a result, their existence in natural raw waters are now more widely acknowledged as a concern. This review summarises the evidence of research on pharmaceuticals' occurrence, impact and fate, considering results from different water bodies. Also, various analytical techniques were reviewed to compare different pharmaceuticals' detection frequencies in water bodies. These include liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, owing to LC-MS's high sensitivity and specification, it is the most reported instrument used for analysis. The PRISMA reviewing methodology was adopted based on relevant literature in order to focus on aim of the review. Among other pharmaceuticals reviewed, sulfamethoxazole was found to be the most frequently detected drug in wastewater (up to 100% detection frequency). The most reported pharmaceutical group in this review is antibiotics, with sulfamethoxazole having the highest concentration among the analysed pharmaceuticals in groundwater and freshwater (up to 5600 ng/L). Despite extensive study and analysis on the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment, appropriate wastewater management and disposal of pharmaceuticals in the water environment are not still monitored regularly. Therefore, there is a need for mainstream studies tailored to the surveillance of pharmaceuticals in water bodies to limit environmental risks to human and aquatic habitats in both mid and low-income nations.

The potential of fungi in the bioremediation of pharmaceutically active compounds: a comprehensive review

The ability of fungal species to produce a wide range of enzymes and metabolites, which act synergistically, makes them valuable tools in bioremediation, especially in the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from contaminated environments. PhACs are compounds that have been specifically designed to treat or alter animal physiological conditions and they include antibiotics, analgesics, hormones, and steroids. Their detrimental effects on all life forms have become a source of public outcry due their persistent nature and their uncontrolled discharge into various wastewater effluents, hospital effluents, and surface waters. Studies have however shown that fungi have the necessary metabolic machinery to degrade PhACs in complex environments, such as soil and water, in addition they can be utilized in bioreactor systems to remove PhACs. In this regard, this review highlights fungal species with immense potential in the biodegradation of PhACs, their enzymatic arsenal as well as the probable mechanism of biodegradation. The challenges encumbering the real-time application of this promising bioremediative approach are also highlighted, as well as the areas of improvement and future perspective. In all, this paper points researchers to the fact that fungal bioremediation is a promising strategy for addressing the growing issue of pharmaceutical contamination in the environment and can help to mitigate the negative impacts on ecosystems and human health.

Adsorptive-Photocatalytic Performance for Antibiotic and Personal Care Product Using Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4

The amount of antibiotics and personal care products entering local sewage systems and ultimately natural waters is increasing and raising concerns about long-term human health effects. We developed an adsorptive photocatalyst, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles, utilizing co-precipitation and calcination with melamine, and quantified its efficacy in removing paraben and oxytetracycline (OTC). During melamine calcination, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ recrystallized, improving material crystallinity and purity for the adsorptive-photocatalytic reaction. Kinetic experiments showed that all four parabens and OTC were removed within 120 and 45 min. We found that contaminant adsorption and reaction with active radicals occurred almost simultaneously with the photocatalyst. OTC adsorption could be adequately described by the Brouers-Sotolongo kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models. OTC photocatalytic degradation started with a series of reactions at different carbon locations (i.e., decarboxamidation, deamination, dehydroxylation, demethylation, and tautomerization). Further toxicity testing showed that Zea mays L. and Vigna radiata L. shoot indexes were less affected by treated water than root indexes. The Zea mays L. endodermis thickness and area decreased considerably after exposure to the 25% (v/v)-treated water. Overall, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibit a remarkable adsorptive-photocatalytic performance for the degradation of tested antibiotics and personal care products.

Bioaccumulation and fate of pharmaceuticals in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon: Temporal variation and impact of a flash flood event

Coastal ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to terrestrial inputs from human-impacted areas. The prevalence of wastewater treatment plants, unable to remove contaminants such as pharmaceuticals (PhACs), leads to their continuous input into the marine environment. In this paper, the seasonal occurrence of PhACs in a semi-confined coastal lagoon (the Mar Menor, south-eastern Spain) was studied during 2018 and 2019 by evaluating their presence in seawater and sediments, and their bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. Temporal variation in the contamination levels was evaluated by comparison to a previous study carried out between 2010 and 2011 before the cessation of permanent discharges of treated wastewater into the lagoon. The impact of a flash flood event (September 2019) on PhACs pollution was also assessed. A total of seven compounds (out of 69 PhACs analysed) were found in seawater during 2018-2019, with a limited detection frequency (<33%) and concentrations (up to 11 ng/L of clarithromycin). Only carbamazepine was found in sediments (ND-1.2 ng/g dw), suggesting an improved environmental quality in comparison to 2010-2011 (when 24 and 13 compounds were detected in seawater and sediments, respectively). However, the biomonitoring of fish and molluscs showed a still remarkable accumulation of analgesic/anti-inflammatory drugs, lipid regulators, psychiatric drugs and β-blocking agents, albeit not higher than in 2010. The flash flood event from 2019 increased the prevalence of PhACs in the lagoon, compared to the 2018-2019 sampling campaigns, especially in the upper water layer. After the flash flood the antibiotics clarithromycin and sulfapyridine yielded the highest concentrations ever reported in the lagoon (297 and 145 ng/L, respectively), alongside azithromycin in 2011 (155 ng/L). Flash flood events associated with sewer overflows and soil mobilisation, which are expected to increase under climate change scenarios, should be considered when assessing the risks posed by pharmaceuticals to vulnerable aquatic ecosystems in the coastal areas.

Competitive adsorptive removal of promazine and promethazine from wastewater using olive tree pruning biochar: operational parameters, kinetics, and equilibrium investigations

This research aims to remove two phenothiazines, promazine (PRO) and promethazine (PMT), from their individual and binary mixtures using olive tree pruning biochar (BC-OTPR). The impact of individual and combinatory effects of operational variables was evaluated for the first time using central composite design (CCD). Simultaneous removal of both drugs was maximized utilizing the composite desirability function. At low concentrations, the uptake of PRO and PMT from their individual solutions was achieved with high efficiency of 98.64%, 47.20 mg/g and 95.87%, 38.16 mg/g, respectively. No major differences in the removal capacity were observed for the binary mixtures. Characterization of BC-OTPR confirmed successful adsorption and showed that the OTPR surface was predominantly mesoporous. Equilibrium investigations revealed that the Langmuir isotherm model best describes the sorption of PRO/PMT from their individual solutions with maximum adsorption capacities of 640.7 and 346.95 mg/g, respectively. The sorption of PRO/PMT conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Regeneration of the adsorbent surface was successfully done with desorption efficiencies of 94.06% and 98.54% for PRO and PMT, respectively, for six cycles.

Long-term exposure to a pharmaceutical pollutant affects geotaxic behaviour in the adult but not juvenile life stage of killifish

Ecosystems around the world are increasingly polluted with pharmaceutical compounds that may perturb wildlife behaviour. Because many pharmaceuticals are continuously present in the aquatic environment, animals are often exposed to them across several life stages or even their entire life. Despite a large body of literature showing various impacts of exposure to pharmaceuticals on fish, hardly any long-term studies across different life stages have been conducted which makes it hard to accurately estimate the ecological outcomes of pharmaceutical pollution. Here, we performed a laboratory experiment in which we exposed hatchlings of the fish model Nothobranchius furzeri to an environmentally relevant concentration (0.5 μg/L) of the antidepressant fluoxetine until well into adulthood. We monitored total body length and geotaxic behaviour (i.e. gravity-mediated activity) of each fish as two traits that are ecologically relevant and naturally differ between juvenile and adult killifish. Fish exposed to fluoxetine were smaller compared to control fish, an effect that became more apparent as fish aged. Even though fluoxetine did not affect average swimming depth of either juveniles or adults, nor the time spent at the surface or bottom of the water column, exposed fish changed their position in the water column (depth) more frequently in the adult but not juvenile phase. These results suggest that important morphological and behavioural responses to pharmaceutical exposure-and their potential ecological consequences-may only emerge later in time and/or during specific life stages. Therefore, our results highlight the importance of considering ecologically relevant timescales across developmental stages when studying the ecotoxicology of pharmaceuticals.

Ambiguous changes in photosynthetic parameters of Lemna minor L. after short-term exposure to naproxen and paracetamol: Can the risk be ignored?

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are recently monitored in the aquatic environment. Naproxen (NPX), paracetamol (PCT) and their transformation products can influence the biochemical and physiological processes at the sub-cellular and cellular levels taking part in the growth and development of plants. This study aimed to compare the effects of NPX and PCT, drugs with different physico-chemical properties, on the growth and photosynthetic processes in Lemna minor during a short-term (7 days) exposure. Although duckweed took up more than five times higher amount of PCT as compared to NPX (275.88 µg/g dry weight to 43.22 µg/g when treated with 10 mg/L), only NPX limited the number of new plants by 9% and 26% under 1 and 10 mg/L, respectively, and increased their dry weight (by 18% under 10 mg/L) and leaf area per plant. A considerable (by 30%) drop in the content of photosynthetic pigments under 10 mg/L treatment by both drugs did not significantly affect the efficiency of the primary processes of photosynthesis. Values of induced chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (F₀, F_V/F_M, Φ_II, and NPQ) showed just a mild stimulation by PCT and a negative effect by NPX (by up to 10%), especially on the function of photosystem II and electron transport in both intact duckweed plants and isolated chloroplasts. Lowered efficiency of Hill reaction activity (by more than 10% under 0.1 - 10 mg/L treatments) in isolated chloroplasts suspension proved the only inhibition effect of PCT to primary photosynthetic processes. In intact plants, higher treatments (0.5 - 10 mg/L) by both NPX and PCT induced an increase in RuBisCO content. The results prove that the potential effect of various drugs on plants is hard to generalise.

European-wide spatial analysis of sewage treatment plants and the possible benefits to nature of advanced treatment to reduce pharmaceutical emissions

Pharmaceuticals are known to widely occur in the environment and to affect the health of ecosystems. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are main emission pathways for pharmaceuticals, which are often not sufficiently removed during wastewater treatment. In Europe, STP treatment requirements are specified under the Urban WasteWater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). The introduction of advanced treatment techniques, such as ozonation and activated carbon, under the UWWTD is expected to be an important option to reduce pharmaceutical emissions. In this study, we present a European-wide analysis of STPs reported under the UWWTD, their current treatment level and potential to remove a set of 58 prioritised pharmaceuticals. Three different scenarios were analysed to show 1) UWWTD present effectiveness, 2) the effectiveness at full UWWTD compliance, and 3) the effectiveness when advanced treatment is implemented at STPs with a treatment capacity of >100.000 person equivalents. Based on a literature study, the potential of individual STPs to reduce pharmaceutical emissions ranged from an average of 9% for STPs with primary treatment to 84% for STPs applying advanced treatment. Results of our calculations show that European-wide emission of pharmaceuticals can be reduced with 68% when large STPs are updated with advanced treatment, but spatial differences exist. We argue that adequate attention should also be paid with regards to preventing environmental impacts of STPs with a capacity <100.000 p.e. Circa 44% of total STP effluent is emitted near Natura2000 sites (EU nature protection areas). Of all surface waters receiving STP effluent for which the ecological status has been assessed under the Water Framework Directive, 77% have a status of less than good. Relatively often only primary treatment is applied to wastewater emitted into coastal waters. This analysis can be used to further model pharmaceutical concentrations in European surface waters, to identify STPs for which more advanced treatment might be required and to protect EU aquatic biodiversity.

The effect of metformin and drinking water quality variation on haloacetamide formation during chlor(am)ination of acetaminophen

Acetaminophen (Apap) is widely used and is known to form toxic haloacetamides (HAcAms) during chlorination. Metformin (Met) is a typical medication with usage much higher than that of Apap and its ubiquitous presence in the environment is known. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Met which contains multiple amino groups potentially joining reactions and different chlorination methods on HAcAm formation from Apap. In addition, a major drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) using the largest river in southern Taiwan was sampled to study the influence of Apap in a DWTP on the HAcAm formation. Results showed increasing dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) molar yields of Apap at a Cl/Apap molar ratio of 5 during chlorination (0.15%) and two-step chlorination (0.03%). HAcAms were formed by the chlorine substitution of hydrogen on the methyl group in Apap followed by the cleavage of the bonding between nitrogen and aromatic. While a high Cl/Apap ratio during chlorination led to reactions between chlorine and HAcAms formed decreasing the HAcAm yields, the two-step chlorination further reduced the HAcAm formation during chlorination by a factor of 1.8-8.2. However, Met which limitedly formed HAcAms increased the DCAcAm yields of Apap by 228% at high chlorine dosages during chlorination and by 244% during two-step chlorination. In the DWTP, trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) formation was important. The formation was positively correlated with NH₄⁺, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA). DCAcAm dominated in the presence of Apap. The DCAcAm molar yields were 0.17%-0.27% and 0.08%-0.21% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The HAcAm yields of Apap in the DWTP were limitedly changed between different locations and seasons. Apap could be one important cause for HAcAm formation in a DWTP, as the presence of other pharmaceuticals such as Met possibly worsens the situation in chlorine applications.

Screening of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) along wastewater treatment system equipped with root zone treatment: A potential model for domestic waste leachate management

We present the use of root zone treatment (RZT) based system for the removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from domestic wastewater. The occurrence of more than a dozen PPCPs were detected in an academic institution wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at three specific locations, i.e., influent, root treatment zone, and effluents. The comparisons of observed compounds detected at various stages of WWTP suggest that the presence of PPCPs, like homatropine, cytisine, carbenoxolone, 4,2',4',6'-tetrahydroxychalcone, norpromazine, norethynodrel, fexofenadine, indinavir, dextroamphetamine, 3-hydroxymorphinan, phytosphingosine, octadecanedioic acid, meradimate, 1-hexadecanoyl-sn-glycerol, and 1-hexadecylamine, are unusual than the usual reported PPCPs in the WWTPs. In general, carbamazepine, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, caffeine, triclocarban, and triclosan are often reported in wastewater systems. The normalized abundances of PPCPs range between 0.037-0.012, 0.108-0.009, and 0.208-0.005 in main influent, root zone effluent, and main effluents, respectively, of the WWTP. In addition, the removal rates of PPCPs were observed from -200.75% to ∼100% at RZT phase in the plant. Interestingly, we observed several PPCPs at later stages of treatment which were not detected in the influent of the WWTP. This is probably owing to the presence of conjugated metabolites of various PPCPs present in the influent, which subsequently got deconjugated to reform the parent compounds during the biological wastewater treatment. In addition, we suspect the potential release of earlier absorbed PPCPs in the system, which were absent on that particular day of sampling but have been part of earlier influents. In essence, RZT-based WWTP was found to be effective in removing the PPCPs and other organic contaminants in the study but results in stress the need for further comprehensive research on RZT system to conclude the exact removal efficacy and fate of PPCPs during treatment in the system. As a current research gap, the study also recommended RZT to be appraised for PPCPs in-situ remediation from landfill leachates, an underestimated source of PPCPs intrusion in the environment.

Effect of psychoactive substances on cardiac and locomotory activity of juvenile marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis

Pharmaceutically active compounds are common and increasing in the aquatic environment. Evidence suggests they have adverse effects on non-target organisms, and they are classified as emerging pollutants for a variety of aquatic organisms. To determine the effects of environmentally relevant levels of psychoactive compounds on non-target organisms, we analyzed cardiac and locomotory activity in early developmental stages of marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis. Responses to sertraline, methamphetamine, and a mixture of citalopram, oxazepam, sertraline, tramadol, venlafaxine, and methamphetamine at a concentration of 1 µg L^-1 of each compound were assessed. On day four of exposure, cardiac activity was recorded for 5 min, and on day eight, locomotory activity was recorded for 15 min. There was a significant increase (p < 0.01) in heart rate in methamphetamine-exposed and Mix-exposed juveniles compared to the unexposed control and there was significant difference (p < 0.01) in proportion of time (activity %) was observed with sertraline-exposed, whereas velocity, and distance moved did not significantly differ (p > 0.05) in exposed and control animals. These findings revealed that low concentrations of chemicals and their mixtures can modify the physiological state of aquatic animals without outward manifestations (activity, distance moved, and velocity). Aquatic animals can be impacted earlier than is visible, but effects can potentially lead to substantial changes in populations and in ecosystem processes. Additional research to investigate chemical combinations, exposure systems, and organism physiological and molecular responses may provide evidence of broad impact of environmental pharmaceuticals.

Novel nontarget LC-HRMS-based approaches for evaluation of drinking water treatment

A conventional evaluation methodology for drinking water pollution focuses on analysing hundreds of compounds, usually by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. High-resolution mass spectrometry allows comprehensive evaluation of all detected signals (compounds) based on their elemental composition, intensity, and numbers. We combined target analysis of 192 emerging micropollutants with nontarget (NT) full-scan/MS/MS methods to describe the impact of treatment steps in detail and assess drinking water treatment efficiency without compound identification. The removal efficiency based on target analytes ranged from - 143 to 97%, depending on the treatment section, technologies, and season. The same effect calculated for all signals detected in raw water by the NT method ranged between 19 and 65%. Ozonation increased the removal of micropollutants from the raw water but simultaneously caused the formation of new compounds. Moreover, ozonation byproducts showed higher persistence than products formed during other types of treatment. We evaluated chlorinated and brominated organics detected by specific isotopic patterns within the developed workflow. These compounds indicated anthropogenic raw water pollution but also potential treatment byproducts. We could match some of these compounds with libraries available in the software. We can conclude that passive sampling combined with nontargeted analysis shows to be a promising approach for water treatment control, especially for long-term monitoring of changes in technology lines because passive sampling dramatically reduces the number of samples and provides time-weighted average information for 2 to 4 weeks.

Accelerated electron transfer process via MOF-derived FeCo/C for enhanced degradation of antibiotic contaminants towards heterogeneous electro-Fenton system

The Fe(III) to Fe(II) process limits the rate of the electro-Fenton system. In this study, MIL-101(Fe) derived porous carbon skeleton-coated FeCo bimetallic catalyst Fe₄/Co@PC-700 was prepared as a heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) catalytic process. The experimental results showed its good performance in catalytic removal of antibiotic contaminants, the rate constant of tetracycline (TC) degradation catalyzed by Fe₄/Co@PC-700 was 8.93 times higher than that of Fe@PC-700 under the pH conditions of raw water (pH = 5.86), exhibited good removal of TC, oxytetracycline (OTC), hygromycin (CTC), chloramphenicol (CAP) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). It was shown that the introduction of Co promoted more Fe⁰ production, allowing the material to exhibit faster Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling rates. ¹O₂ and high-priced metal oxygen species were identified as the main active species of the system, in addition to the analysis of possible degradation pathways and toxicity of intermediates of TC. Finally, the stability and adaptability of Fe₄/Co@PC-700 and EF systems to different water matrices were evaluated, showing that Fe₄/Co@PC-700 was easy to recover and could be applied to different water matrices. This study provides a reference for the design and system application of heterogeneous EF catalysts.

Advanced oxidation and a metrological strategy based on CLC-MS for the removal of pharmaceuticals from pore & surface water

In this work, it is studied the photolysis, electrolysis, and photo-electrolysis of a mixture of pharmaceutics (sulfadiazine, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen and ibuprofen) contained in two very different types of real water matrices (obtained from surface and porewater reservoirs), trying to clarify the role of the matrix on the degradation of the pollutants. To do this, a new metrological approach was also developed for screening of pharmaceuticals in waters by capillary liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (CLC-MS). This allows the detection at concentrations lower than 10 ng mL^-1. Results obtained in the degradation tests demonstrate that inorganic composition of the water matrix directly influences on the efficiency of the drugs removal by the different EAOPs and better degradation results were obtained for experiments carried out with surface water. The most recalcitrant drug studied was ibuprofen for all processes evaluated, while diclofenac and ketoprofen were found to be the easiest drugs for being degraded. Photo-electrolysis was found to be more efficient than photolysis and electrolysis, and the increase in the current density was found to attain a slight improvement in the removal although with an associated huge increase in the energy consumption. The main reaction pathways for each drug and technology were also proposed.

First emerging pollutants profile in groundwater of the volcanic active island of El Hierro (Canary Islands)

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are substances present in wastewater that have not been studied, previously, leading to ambiguity in regulations for their presence in water resources. Territories that are highly dependent on groundwater resources are at a high risk of suffering the consequences of EP contamination due to their dependence on good quality groundwater for agriculture, drinking, and other uses. A relevant example is El Hierro (Canary Islands), which was declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO in 2000 and is almost completely powered by renewable energies. Using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the concentrations of 70 EPs were assessed at 19 sampling points on El Hierro. The results indicated that no pesticides were present in groundwater; however, varied concentration levels of ultraviolet (UV) filters, UV stabilizers/blockers and pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) were found, with La Frontera being the most contaminated municipality. With regard to the different installation types, piezometers and wells were the ones showing the highest concentrations for most EPs. Interestingly, the depth of sampling correlated positively with EP concentration, and four different clusters virtually dividing the island into two areas could be identified based on the presence of each EP. More studies should be performed to ascertain why a few of the EPs showed considerably high concentrations at different depths. The results obtained highlight the need to, not only implement remediation measures once EPs have reached the soil and aquifers, but also to avoid their incorporation into the water cycle via homes, animal husbandry, agriculture, industry, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Antidepressant pharmaceuticals in aquatic systems, individual-level ecotoxicological effects: growth, survival and behavior

The growing consumption of antidepressant pharmaceuticals has resulted in their widespread occurrence in the environment, particularly in waterways with a typical concentration range from ng L^-1 to μg L^-1. An increasing number of studies have confirmed the ecotoxic potency of antidepressants, not only at high concentrations but also at environmentally relevant levels. The present review covers literature from the last decade on the individual-level ecotoxicological effects of the most commonly used antidepressants, including their impact on behavior, growth, and survival. We focus on the relationship between antidepressants physico-chemical properties and dynamics in the environment. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages of considering behavioral changes as sensitive endpoints in ecotoxicology, as well as some current methodological shortcomings in the field, including low standardization, reproducibility and context-dependency.

Green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii can effectively remove diclofenac from the water environment - A new perspective on biotransformation

The use of unicellular algae to remove xenobiotics (including drugs) from wastewaters is one of the rapidly developing areas of environmental protection. Numerous data indicate that for efficient phycoremediation three processes are important, i.e. biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation. Although biosorption and bioaccumulation do not raise any serious doubts, biotransformation is more problematic since its products can be potentially more toxic than the parent compounds posing a threat to organisms living in a given environment, including organisms that made this transformation. Thus, two questions need to be answered before the proper algae strain is chosen for phycoremediation, namely what metabolites are produced during biotransformation, and how resistant is the analyzed strain to a mixture of parent compound and metabolites that appear over the course of culture? In this work, we evaluated the remediation potential of the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in relation to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as exemplified by diclofenac. To achieve this, we analysed the susceptibility of C. reinhardtii to diclofenac as well as its capability to biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation of the drug. We have found that even at a relatively high concentration of diclofenac the algae maintained their vitality and were able to remove (37.7%) DCF from the environment. A wide range of phase I and II metabolites of diclofenac (38 transformation products) was discovered, with many of them characteristic rather for animal and bacterial biochemical pathways than for plant metabolism. Due to such a large number of detected products, 18 of which were not previously reported, the proposed scheme of diclofenac transformation by C. reinhardtii not only significantly contributes to broadening the knowledge in this field, but also allows to suggest possible pathways of degradation of xenobiotics with a similar structure. It is worth pointing out that a decrease in the level of diclofenac in the media observed in this study cannot be fully explained by biotransformation (8.4%). The mass balance analysis indicates that other processes (total 22%), such as biosorption, a non-extractable residue formation, or complete decomposition in metabolic cycles can be involved in the diclofenac disappearance, and those findings open the prospects of further research.

Biodegradation of clopidogrel bisulfate by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas putida strains isolated from Algerian wastewater

The clopidogrel bisulfate was degraded under aerobic conditions by two bacterial strains isolated from industrial effluents in El-Harrach, Algeria. The sequencing of their 16S rRNA revealed that these two strains are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas putida. The experiments showed that this consortium could remove clopidogrel bisulfate at high concentrations (5-1500 mg·L^-1) within 96 h incubation period. The HPLC analysis recorded 75.23% degradation of clopidogrel bisulfate at an initial concentration of 100 mg·L^-1 after five days of incubation at pH 7.0 and a temperature of 30 °C. Also, a maximum degradation of 99.08% was carried out at a more basic pH (8.5). While only 41% was degraded at a temperature of 20 °C. Moreover, the presence of supplemental sources of carbon and nitrogen in the mixed culture media effectively improved the biodegradation of clopidogrel bisulfate by the stains. Finally, the morphology of the strains and the properties of the cell's surface were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This study reports, for the first time, the viability of the aerobic biodegradation of clopidogrel bisulfate in water in a wide range of concentrations.

Development of an embedded molecular structure-based model for prediction of micropollutant treatability in a drinking water treatment plant by machine learning from three years monitoring data

In this study, an autoencoder-based molecular structure embedding model was developed to predict treatability of micropollutant in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) by machine learning using 69 micropollutants monitoring data at 18 DWTPs for three years. The molecular structure, which contains physicochemical characteristics, was embedded as a fixed-length vector that is advantageous for data-driven analysis and machine learning. First, the molecular structure of the micropollutants was converted to a sequence of tokens using the simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) pair encoding tokenizer, a frequency-based tokenization method. It was then compressed into fixed-length vectors using an autoencoder trained on various molecular structures within the Chemical Entities of Biological Interest. To validate the proposed models, a binary classification of micropollutant treatability was performed using the embedded molecular structure of micropollutants with various external features, such as concentration, season, and the presence of specific drinking water treatment processes by machine learning. The accuracy of the developed model for the 69 micropollutants in this study was 0.86, and the molecular structure was determined to be the most important feature. Furthermore, an accuracy of 0.71 was obtained in external validation for pharmaceuticals and personal care products that were not used for training. This shows that the proposed embedding vector can be generalized to unseen molecules during the training process, which means that it reflects the characteristics of the molecular structures.

Global trends in the research and development of medical/pharmaceutical wastewater treatment over the half-century

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted public health and the worldwide economy. The overstretched operation of health systems around the world is accompanied by potential and ongoing environmental threats. At present, comprehensive scientific assessments of research on temporal changes in medical/pharmaceutical wastewater (MPWW), as well as estimations of researcher networks and scientific productivity are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a thorough literature study, using bibliometrics to reproduce research on medical wastewater over nearly half a century. Our primary goal is systematically to map the evolution of keyword clusters over time, and to obtain the structure and credibility of clusters. Our secondary objective was to measure research network performance (country, institution, and author) using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. We extracted 2306 papers published between 1981 and 2022. The co-cited reference network identified 16 clusters with well-structured networks (Q = 0.7716, S = 0.896). The main trends were as follows: 1) Early MPWW research prioritized sources of wastewater, and this cluster was considered to be the mainstream research frontier and direction, representing an important source and priority research area. 2) Mid-term research focused on characteristic contaminants and detection technologies. Particularly during 2000-2010, a period of rapid developments in global medical systems, pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in MPWW were recognized as a major threat to human health and the environment. 3) Recent research has focused on novel degradation technologies for PhC-containing MPWW, with high scores for research on biological methods. Wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as being consistent with or predictive of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. Therefore, the application of MPWW in COVID-19 tracing will be of great interest to environmentalists. These results could guide the future direction of funding agencies and research groups.

Efficiently photocatalysis activation of peroxydisulfate by Fe-doped g-C3N5 for pharmaceuticals and personal care products degradation

Peroxydisulfate (PDS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP) in wastewater treatment. In this study, a Fe-doped g-C₃N₅ (Fe@g-C₃N₅) was synthesized as a photocatalyst for catalyzing the PDS-based AOPs to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) at pH 3 and Naproxen (NPX) at pH 7. The photocatalytic performance of Fe@g-C₃N₅ was 19% and 67% higher than g-C₃N₅ and g-C₃N₄ for degradation of TH at pH 3, respectively, while it was 21% and 35% at pH 7. The Fe:N ratio in Fe@g-C₃N₅, was calculated as 1:3.79, indicating that the doped Fe atom formed a FeN₄ structure with an adjacent two-layer graphite structure of g-C₃N₅, which improved the charge separation capacity of g-C₃N₅ and act as a new reaction center that can efficiently combine and catalyze the PDS to radicals. Although the intrinsic photo-degradation performance is weak, the photocatalytic performance of Fe@g-C₃N₅ has great room for the improvement and application in wastewater treatment.

β-Cyclodextrin functionalized adsorbents for removal of organic micropollutants from water

The presence of organic micropollutants in water is an ongoing concern due to the potential risks to living organisms. β-Cyclodextrin-based adsorbents have been developed to remove organic micropollutants from water as they are deemed to be efficient, selective and reusable. This literature review establishes the current state of the knowledge on the application of β-Cyclodextrin adsorbents for the removal of organic micropollutants from water and determines knowledge gaps and recommendations for future studies. An inventory of organic micropollutants that have been studied was developed and it revealed that bisphenol-A has been the most commonly studied. Adsorbent configurations were reviewed and modifications to the adsorbent structures that have provided enhanced adsorption properties were identified. The size and shape of the organic micropollutants was found to affect the adsorption behavior. The surface charge of β-Cyclodextrin adsorbents influence adsorption when repulsive forces are present and the extent of repulsion can depend on the pH of the solution. Common competitors such as natural organic matter and inorganic ions do not significantly impact the adsorption of organic micropollutants however relatively small fulvic acids may compete for the β-Cyclodextrin cavity depending on the adsorbent type. Desorption of organic micropollutants from these adsorbents has been accomplished with alcohols and most adsorbents have been recovered and reused in adsorption/desorption cycles. The need for enhanced recovery processes that maintain water quality and adsorbent integrity was identified. The use of quantitative structure-activity relationships and molecular computational tools could potentially guide future environmental applications of β-Cyclodextrin adsorbents.

Carbon Fiber Paper Sensor for Determination of Trimethoprim Antibiotic in Fish Samples

The increase in anthropogenic pollution raises serious concerns regarding contamination of water bodies and aquatic species with potential implications on human health. Pharmaceutical compounds are a type of contaminants of emerging concern that are increasingly consumed and, thus, being frequently found in the aquatic environment. In this sense, an electrochemical sensor based on an unmodified and untreated carbon fiber paper (CPS-carbon paper sensor) was simply employed for the analysis of trimethoprim antibiotic in fish samples. First, the analytical conditions were thoroughly optimized in order for the CPS to achieve maximum performance in trimethoprim determination. Therefore, an electrolyte (0.1 M Britton-Robinson buffer) pH of 7 was selected and for square wave voltammetry parameters, optimum values of amplitude, frequency and step potential corresponded to 0.02 V, 50 Hz, and 0.015 V, respectively, whereas the deposition of analyte occurred at +0.7 V for 60 s. In these optimum conditions, the obtained liner range (0.05 to 2 µM), sensitivity (48.8 µA µM^-1 cm^-2), and LOD (0.065 µM) competes favorably with the commonly used GCE-based sensors or BDD electrodes that employ nanostructuration or are more expensive. The CPS was then applied for trimethoprim determination in fish samples after employing a solid phase extraction procedure based on QuEChERS salts, resulting in recoveries of 105.9 ± 1.8% by the standard addition method.

Progress in Research and Application of Metal-Organic Gels: A Review

In recent years, metal-organic gels (MOGs) have attracted much attention due to their hierarchical porous structure, large specific surface area, and good surface modifiability. Compared with MOFs, the synthesis conditions of MOGs are gentler and more stable. At present, MOGs are widely used in the fields of catalysis, adsorption, energy storage, electrochromic devices, sensing, analysis, and detection. In this paper, literature metrology and knowledge graph visualization analysis are adopted to analyze and summarize the literature data in the field of MOGs. The visualization maps of the temporal distribution, spatial distribution, authors and institutions' distribution, influence of highly cited literature and journals, keyword clustering, and research trends are helpful to clearly grasp the content and development trend of MOG materials research, point out the future research direction for scholars, and promote the practical application of MOGs. At the same time, the paper reviews the research and application progress of MOGs in recent years by combining keyword clustering, time lines, and emergence maps, and looks forward to their challenges, future development trend, and application prospects.

Toward Energy Neutrality: Novel Wastewater Treatment Incorporating Acidophilic Ammonia Oxidation

Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) followed by partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) and anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising roadmap to achieve energy-neutral wastewater treatment. However, the acidification of wastewater caused by ferric hydrolysis in CEPT and how to achieve stable suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in PN/A challenge this paradigm in practice. This study proposes a novel wastewater treatment scheme to overcome these challenges. Results showed that, by dosing FeCl3 at 50 mg Fe/L, the CEPT process removed 61.8% of COD and 90.1% of phosphate and reduced the alkalinity as well. Feeding by low alkalinity wastewater, stable nitrite accumulation was achieved in an aerobic reactor operated at pH 4.35 aided by a novel acid-tolerant ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), namely, Candidatus Nitrosoglobus. After polishing in a following anoxic reactor (anammox), a satisfactory effluent, containing COD at 41.9 ± 11.2 mg/L, total nitrogen at 5.1 ± 1.8 mg N/L, and phosphate at 0.3 ± 0.2 mg P/L, was achieved. Moreover, the stable performances of this integration were well maintained at an operating temperature of 12 °C, and 10 investigated micropollutants were removed from the wastewater. An energy balance assessment indicated that the integrated system could achieve energy self-sufficiency in domestic wastewater treatment.

Fitorremediación de cinco productos farmaceúticos registrados como contaminantes emergentes en medio acuoso empleando la especie Jacinto de Agua (Eichhornia crassipes)

La contaminación de los sistemas acuáticos de agua dulce constituye un problema ambiental recurrente en el ámbito mundial, que se agudiza cada vez más con la presencia frecuente de nuevos compuestos químicos, tal es el caso de los contaminantes emergentes, dentro de los cuales se incluyen los productos farmacéuticos. El objetivo de esta investigación fue estimar la capacidad de la especie jacinto de agua (Eichhornia crassipes) para remover del medio acuoso cinco fármacos altamente recetados y de venta libre como ciprofloxacina, ibuprofeno, sulfametaxazol, diclofenaco y acetaminofén. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en condiciones de invernadero a una temperatura de 25 0C y a un pH de 6,5; con una toma de muestras cada 24 h a diferentes concentraciones (3, 6, 9,12) mg/L. Para el análisis de las muestras se utilizó Espectrofotometría UV-VIS con lectura directa de las absorbancias de cada uno de los fármacos. Se empleó la metodología de superficies de respuesta para el análisis estadístico de los datos, lo que permitió determinar los modelos para establecer tiempos y concentraciones óptimas maximizando la absorción de cada producto farmacéutico, así como obtener las pendientes de crecimiento para definir hacia donde se puede proyectar el óptimo. Los principales resultados en este estudio indican que E. crassipes removió 95% de diclofenaco en soluciones acuosas con una concentración de 3 mg/L en un tiempo de 24 h, seguido de ciprofloxacina y acetaminofén con una remoción máxima de 91,18% y 71% a las 96 h, respectivamente. Mientras que los más bajos porcentajes de remoción se obtuvo para ibuprofeno y sulfametaxazol con 57,56% y 36%, respectivamente. En el presente estudio, se comprobó la alta capacidad de remoción E. crassipes de los cinco productos farmacéuticos en condiciones controladas, evidenciando una gran posibilidad de aplicación en el campo de la fitorremediación de contaminantes emergentes en medio acuoso, lo cual constituye un importante aporte en este ámbito de la investigación. Amine-Functionalized Natural Rubber/Mesostructured Silica Nanocomposites for Adsorptive Removal of Clofibric Acid in Aqueous Phase

This study is the first report on the synthesis, characterization and application of amine-functionalized mesoporous nanocomposites based on natural rubber (NR) and wormhole-like mesostructured silica (WMS). In comparison with amine-functionalized WMS (WMS-NH₂), a series of NR/WMS-NH₂ composites were synthesized via an in situ sol-gel method in which the organo-amine group was grafted onto the nanocomposite surface via co-condensation with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) as the amine-functional group precursor. The NR/WMS-NH₂ materials had a high specific surface area (115-492 m² g^-1) and total pore volume (0.14-1.34 cm³ g^-1) with uniform wormhole-like mesoporous frameworks. The amine concentration of NR/WMS-NH₂ (0.43-1.84 mmol g^-1) was increased with an increase in the APS concentration, corresponding to high levels of functionalization with the amine groups of 53-84%. The H₂O adsorption-desorption measurement revealed that NR/WMS-NH₂ possessed higher hydrophobicity than WMS-NH₂. The removal of clofibric acid (CFA), a xenobiotic metabolite of the lipid-lowering drug clofibrate, from the aqueous solution using WMS-NH₂ and NR/WMS-NH₂ materials was investigated using a batch adsorption experiment. The adsorption was a chemical process in which the pseudo-second order kinetic model expressed the sorption kinetic data better than the pseudo first-order and Ritchie-second kinetic order model. In addition, the CFA adsorption sorption equilibrium data of the NR/WMS-NH₂ materials were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. The NR/WMS-NH₂ with 5% amine loading had the highest CFA adsorption capacity (6.29 mg g^-1).

Insight into the mechanisms of trichloronitromethane formation by vacuum ultraviolet: QSAR model and FTICR-MS analysis

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis is recognized as an environmental-friendly treatment process. Nitrate (NO₃^-) and natural organic matter (NOM) are widely present in water source. We investigated trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation during chlorination after VUV photolysis, because TCNM is an unregulated highly toxic disinfection byproduct. In this study: (1) we found reactive nitrogen species that is generated under VUV photolysis of NO₃^- react with organic matter to form nitrogen-containing compounds and subsequently form TCNM during chlorination; (2) we found the mere presence of 0.1 mmol/L NO₃^- can result in the formation of up to 63.96 µg/L TCNM; (3) we found the changes in pH (6.0-8.0), chloride (1-4 mmol/L), and bicarbonate (1-4 mmol/L) cannot effectively diminish TCNM formation; and, (4) we established the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model, which indicated a linear relationship between TCNM formation and the Hammett constant (σ) of model compounds; and, (5) we characterized TCNM precursors in water matrix after VUV photolysis and found 1161 much more nitrogen-containing compounds with higher aromaticity were generated. Overall, this study indicates more attention should be paid to reducing the formation risk of TCNM when applying VUV photolysis process at scale.

Biological magnetic ion exchange resin on advanced treatment of synthetic wastewater

In this work, three biological ion exchange systems and one biological activated carbon (BAC) system were established by employing magnetic ion exchange resin (MIEX), non-magnetic resin (NIEX), polystyrenic resin (DIEX) and granular activated carbon as the biocarrier for advanced treatment of wastewater. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal of four systems all stabilized at about 84% due to biodegradation. The start-up period of bio-MIEX (nearly 40 d) was greatly shorter than that of others (nearly 190 d). Ibuprofen removal was ascribed to adsorption in the initial stage, which subsequently changed to the effect of biodegradation. After the start-up period, ibuprofen removal was nearly 100% (bio-MIEX), 60% (bio-NIEX), 61% (bio-DIEX) and 89% (BAC). According to the surface observation, ATP and protein measurement and metagenomic analysis, the superior performance of bio-MIEX could be attributed to its highest biological activity resulted from the presence of Fe₃O₄ rather than polymer matrix and surface roughness.

A novel role of various hydrogen bonds in adsorption, desorption and co-adsorption of PPCPs on corn straw-derived biochars

The effect of various hydrogen bonds with different strength on the environmental behaviors of PPCPs remains unclear. In this study, three pharmaceutical pollutants including clofibric acid (CA), sulfamerazine (SMZ), and acetaminophen (ACT) with different functional groups and pK_a, were selected as representative of PPCPs to investigate the pivotal role of hydrogen bonds in adsorption/desorption and co-adsorption behaviors of PPCPs on two corn straw-derived biochars prepared at 300 °C (BCs-300) and 600 °C (BCs-600), respectively. The results indicated that charge-assisted hydrogen bond (CAHB) and ordinary hydrogen bond (OHB) with different intensities were the pivotal mechanisms responsible for the adsorption of three PPCPs on biochars, which was further confirmed by FTIR, but their immobilization effects of PPCPs on biochars were completely different. Compared with OHB formed between CA and BCs-600, the stronger CAHB (formed between CA and BCs-300, and SMZ/ACT and BCs-300/BCs-600) with covalent bond characteristics that derived from the smaller |ΔpK_a| (<5.0), resulted in the greater adsorption capacity (Q_s) and affinity (K_f) of the three PPCPs on BCs-300 (Q_s ≥ 195 μmol·g^-1, K_f ≥ 1.9956) than that on BCs-600 (Q_s ≤ 92 μmol·g^-1, K_f ≤ 0.5192), thereby making the better immobilization effect of PPCPs by biochar. In addition, in the coexisting systems, either SMZ coexisting with CA/ACT on BCs-300, or ACT coexisting with CA/SMZ on BCs-600, both implied that when the |ΔpK_a| between the target PPCPs and biochar is smaller than that between the coexisting compound and biochar, the target PPCPs can preferentially occupy the shared hydrogen bond sites on the biochar surface, and hard to be replaced by the coexisting compound. This work not only expand the application of designed biochar as engineering adsorbents to control and removal of the specific PPCPs in the environment, but also facilitate accurate assessment of the environmental risk of co-existing PPCPs.

Membrane-based nanoconfined heterogeneous catalysis for water purification: A critical review✰

Progress in heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is hampered by several issues including mass transfer limitation, limited diffusion of short-lived reactive oxygen species (ROS), aggregation of nanocatalysts, and loss of nanocatalysts to treated water. These issues have been addressed in recent studies by executing the heterogeneous AOPs in confinement, especially in the nanopores of catalytic membranes. Under nanoconfinement (preferably at the length of less than 25 nm), the oxidant-nanocatalyst interaction, ROS-micropollutant interaction and diffusion of ROS have been observed to significantly improve, which results in enhanced ROS yield and mass transfer, improved reaction kinetics and reduced matrix effect as compared to conventional heterogenous AOP configuration. Given the significance of nanoconfinement effect, this study presents a critical review of the current status of membrane-based nanoconfined heterogeneous catalysis system for the first time. A succinct overview of the nanoconfinement concept in the context of membrane-based nanofluidic platforms is provided to elucidate the theoretical and experimental findings related to reaction kinetics, reaction mechanisms and molecule transport in membrane-based nanoconfined AOPs vs. conventional AOPs. In addition, strategies to construct membrane-based nanoconfined catalytic systems are explained along with conflicting arguments/opinions, which provides critical information on the viability of these strategies and future research directions. To show the desirability and applicability of membrane-based nanoconfined catalysis systems, performance governing factors including operating conditions and water matrix effect are particularly focused. Finally, this review presents a systematic account of the opportunities and technological constraints in the development of membrane-based nanoconfined catalytic platform to realize effective micropollutant elimination in water treatment.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the surface water of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section)

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly seen emerging organic contaminants in aquatic environments. The transects for the occurrence and distribution of 24 PPCPs along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section) were investigated in this study. All 24 targeted compounds were detected in surface water, with concentrations in the range from not detected (ND) to 527.4 ng/L. Among these PPCPs, caffeine is found to have the highest concentration and its detection frequency is 100%. The total PPCP concentration ranged from 136 ng/L to 916 ng/L (median, 319.5 ng/L). Spatial analysis showed that the pollution level of PPCPs in the trunk stream was lower than that in most tributaries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that norfloxacin, azithromycin, estrone, and triclosan posed high risks to aquatic organisms (RQ > 1), roxithromycin and oxytetracycline imposed moderate risks (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1), and the tributary Jindi River had the highest mixed risk (MRQ = 222).

Assembled mixed co-cultures for emerging pollutant removal using native microorganisms from sewage sludge

The global pharmaceutical pollution caused by drug consumption (>100,000 tonnes) and its disposal into the environment is an issue which is currently being addressed by bioremediation techniques, using single or multiple microorganisms. Nevertheless, the low efficiency and the selection of non-compatible species interfere with the success of this methodology. This paper proposes a novel way of obtaining an effective multi-domain co-culture, with the capacity to degrade multi-pharmaceutical compounds simultaneously. To this end, seven microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) previously isolated from sewage sludge were investigated to enhance their degradation performance. All seven strains were factorially mixed and used to assemble different artificial co-cultures. Consequently, 127 artificial co-cultures were established and ranked, based on their fitness performance, by using the BSocial analysis web tool. The individual strains were categorized according to their social behaviour, whose net effect over the remaining strains was defined as 'Positive', 'Negative' or 'Neutral'. To evaluate the emerging-pollutant degradation rate, the best 10 co-cultures, and those which contained the social strains were then challenged with three different Pharmaceutical Active compounds (PhACs): diclofenac, carbamazepine and ketoprofen. The co-cultures with the fungi Penicillium oxalicum XD-3.1 and Penicillium rastrickii were able to degrade PhACs. However, the highest performance (>80% degradation) was obtained by the minimal active microbial consortia consisting of both Penicillium spp., Cladosporium cladosporoides and co-existing bacteria. These consortia transformed the PhACs to derivate molecules through hydroxylation and were released to the media, resulting in a low ecotoxicity effect. High-throughput screening of co-cultures provides a quick, reliable and efficient method to narrow down suitable degradation co-cultures for emerging PhAC contaminants while avoiding toxic metabolic derivatives.

A charged nanocomposite membrane via co-deposition of gallic acid and polyethyleneimine-silver for improving separation and antibacterial properties

Pharmaceuticals have been continuously detected from surface water and groundwater. In order to improve the rejection performance of pharmaceuticals by a nanofiltration membrane (NF), a positively charged membrane was prepared by co-deposition of natural gallic acid and polyethyleneimine on the polyacrylonitrile hydrolysis membrane. Effects of gallic acid concentration, polyethylene imine concentration, reaction time, and the molecular weight of polyethylene imine were documented. The physical and chemical properties of the membrane were also investigated by surface morphology, hydrophilicity, surface charge, and molecular weight cut-off. The optimized membrane had a molecular weight cut-off of about 958 Da and possessed a pure water permeability of 74.21 L·m^-2·h^-1·MPa^-1. The results exhibited salt rejection in the following order: MgCl₂ > CaCl₂ > MgSO₄ > Na₂CO₃ > NaCl > Na₂SO₄, while the rejection ability of pharmaceuticals is as follows: amlodipine > atenolol > carbamazepine > ibuprofen, suggesting that the positively charged membrane has enhanced retention to both divalent cations and charged pharmaceuticals. In addition, the antibacterial membrane was obtained by loading silver nanoparticles onto the positively charged membrane, which greatly improved the antibacterial ability of the membrane.
