Anaerobic biodegradation of (emerging) organic contaminants in the aquatic environment

Occurrence, removal, and mass balance of contaminants of emerging concern in biological nutrient removal-based sewage treatment plants: Role of redox conditions in biotransformation and sorption

The study investigates the fate of 20 contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in two full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) based on the Biodenipho™ (WWTP 1) and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (WWTP 2) processes. Samples of both the dissolved and solid phases (particulate and sludge) from all the wastewater and sludge processing-related units were studied using the mass balance approach to understand the distribution of CECs. The total mass load removal efficiency for anti-inflammatory (4), antibiotics (4), and hormones (5) was 76, 46, 93%, and 72, 38, 90% from WWTP 1 and 2, respectively. The mass load analysis showed that 8.3 kg and 6.5 kg of targeted contaminants enter the treatment plants per day while 0.35 kg and 0.32 kg are discharged along with effluent, and 1.5 g and 7.7 g (dry weight) are released through sludge in WWTP 1 and 2, respectively. Both biodegradation and sorption mechanisms depended on the redox conditions. Ammonia oxidizing conditions favoured the most for the biotransformation, followed by anaerobic and nitrate-reducing conditions. The study stresses the need for separate redox conditions for optimum removal of CECs and advanced tertiary treatment to remove recalcitrant compounds. The results help better understand the removal mechanisms of the CECs in BNR treatment.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) biodegradation in acidogenic systems: One step further on where and who

The occurrence of brominated flame retardants such as Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water bodies poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. Degradation of TBBPA in wastewater has successfully been demonstrated to occur through anaerobic digestion (AD), although the involved microorganisms and the conditions favouring the conversion remains unclear. In this study, it was observed that bioconversion of TBBPA did not occur during the hydrolytic stage of the AD, but during the strictly fermentative stage. Bioconversion occurred in hydrolytic-acidogenic as well as in strictly acidogenic continuous bioreactors. This indicates that the microorganisms that degrade TBBPA benefit from the electron flux taking place during glycolysis and further transformations into short-chain fatty acids. The degradation kinetics of TBBPA was inversely proportional to the complexity of the wastewater as the apparent kinetics constants were 2.11, 1.86, and 0.52 h^-1·gVSS^-1 for glucose, starch, and domestic sewage as carbon source, respectively. Additionally, the micropollutant loading rate relative to the overall organic loading rate is of major importance during the investigation of cometabolic transformations. The long-term exposure to TBBPA at environmentally realistic concentrations did not cause any major changes in the microbiome composition. Multivariate statistical analysis of the evolvement of the microbiome throughout the incubation suggested that Enterobacter spp. and Clostridium spp. are the key players in TBBPA degradation. Finally, a batch enrichment was conducted, which showed that concentrations of 0.5 mg·L^-1 or higher are detrimental to Clostridium spp., even though these organisms are putative TBBPA degraders. The Clostridium genus was outcompeted by the Enterobacter and Klebsiella genera, hereby highlighting the effect of unrealistic concentrations frequently used in culture-dependent studies on the microbial community composition.

Effect of Carbamazepine, Ibuprofen, Triclosan and Sulfamethoxazole on Anaerobic Bioreactor Performance: Combining Cell Damage, Ecotoxicity and Chemical Information

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are partially degraded in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), thereby leading to the formation of more toxic metabolites. Bacterial populations in bioreactors operated in WWTPs are sensitive to different toxics such as heavy metals and aromatic compounds, but there is still little information on the effect that pharmaceuticals exert on their metabolism, especially under anaerobic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of selected pharmaceuticals that remain in solution and attached to biosolids on the metabolism of anaerobic biomass. Batch reactors operated in parallel under the pressure of four individual and mixed PPCPs (carbamazepine, ibuprofen, triclosan and sulfametoxazole) allowed us to obtain relevant information on anaerobic digestion performance, toxicological effects and alterations to key enzymes involved in the biodegradation process. Cell viability was quantitatively evaluated using an automatic analysis of confocal microscopy images, and showed that triclosan and mixed pollutants caused higher toxicity and cell death than the other individual compounds. Both individual pollutants and their mixture had a considerable impact on the anaerobic digestion process, favoring carbon dioxide production, lowering organic matter removal and methane production, which also produced microbial stress and irreversible cell damage.

Enzymatic cometabolic biotransformation of organic micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Biotransformation of trace-level organic micropollutants (OMPs) by complex microbial communities in wastewater treatment facilities is a key process for their detoxification and environmental impact reduction. Therefore, understanding the metabolic activities and mechanisms that contribute to their biotransformation is essential when developing approaches aiming to minimize their discharge. This review addresses the relevance of cometabolic processes and discusses the main enzymatic activities currently known to take part in OMPs removal under different redox environments in the compartments of wastewater treatment plants. Furthermore, the most common methodologies to decipher such enzymes are discussed, including the use of in vitro enzyme assays, enzymatic inhibitors, the analysis of transformation products and the application of several -omic techniques. Finally, perspectives on major challenges and future research requirements to improve OMPs biotransformation are proposed.

Occurrence of synthetic polycyclic and nitro musk compounds in sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants

Synthetic musk compounds (SMCs) are widely used as fragrances that can be released from different sources and through the sewer system, finally reaching wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, 6 synthetic polycyclic and 5 nitro musk compounds were screened in 55 sewage sludge (SS) samples from 43 different WWTPs in the Czech Republic, and the effect of WWTP technology parameters on SMC content in SS was assessed. Galaxolide and Tonalide were predominant synthetic polycyclic musk compounds (SPMCs) detected in all SS tested and accounted for 99.5% of the average content of sludge SMCs (5518 μg/kg dw). The amount of synthetic nitro musk compounds (SNMCs) in SS samples was negligible. The Tonalide content in SS correlated significantly with the WWTP design capacity (r = 0.32, P < 0.05). The significant correlation between chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and SMCs (r = -0.37, P < 0.05) partly suggests the recalcitrance of SMCs, mainly of Celestolide, Galaxolide and Tonalide, to biodegradation in WWTPs. A statistically lower SNMC content was found in anaerobically digested sludges than in aerobic ones. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the digestion technology as well as the temperature of anaerobic digestion on the SPMC content in sewage sludge. The wastewater (WW) load percentage or WW hydraulic retention time had no influence on the SMC content in the resulting SS. Musk compounds did not change over time when the SS samples were analysed with a gap of two years, suggesting that sewage sludge for soil applications only needs to be analysed for musk compounds once a year. Our study indicates that the currently common WWTP technologies have only very limited potential to affect the accumulation of musk compounds in sewage sludge.

Dynamics of Soil Microbial Communities During Diazepam and Oxazepam Biodegradation in Soil Flooded by Water From a WWTP

The demand for energy and chemicals is constantly growing, leading to an increase of the amounts of contaminants discharged to the environment. Among these, pharmaceutical molecules are frequently found in treated wastewater that is discharged into superficial waters. Indeed, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are designed to remove organic pollution from urban effluents but are not specific, especially toward contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), which finally reach the natural environment. In this context, it is important to study the fate of micropollutants, especially in a soil aquifer treatment (SAT) context for water from WWTPs, and for the most persistent molecules such as benzodiazepines. In the present study, soils sampled in a reed bed frequently flooded by water from a WWTP were spiked with diazepam and oxazepam in microcosms, and their concentrations were monitored for 97 days. It appeared that the two molecules were completely degraded after 15 days of incubation. Samples were collected during the experiment in order to follow the dynamics of the microbial communities, based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing for Archaea and Bacteria, and ITS2 gene for Fungi. The evolution of diversity and of specific operating taxonomic units (OTUs) highlighted an impact of the addition of benzodiazepines, a rapid resilience of the fungal community and an evolution of the bacterial community. It appeared that OTUs from the Brevibacillus genus were more abundant at the beginning of the biodegradation process, for diazepam and oxazepam conditions. Additionally, Tax4Fun tool was applied to 16S rRNA gene sequencing data to infer on the evolution of specific metabolic functions during biodegradation. It finally appeared that the microbial community in soils frequently exposed to water from WWTP, potentially containing CECs such as diazepam and oxazepam, may be adapted to the degradation of persistent contaminants.

Influence of cosubstrate and hydraulic retention time on the removal of drugs and hygiene products in sanitary sewage in an anaerobic Expanded Granular Sludge Bed reactor

Diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU), propranolol (PRO), triclosan (TCS) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) can be recalcitrant in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP). The removal of these compounds was investigated in scale-up (69 L) Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) reactor, fed with sanitary sewage from the São Carlos-SP (Brazil) WWTP and 200 mg L^-1 of ethanol. The EGSB was operated in three phases: (I) hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 36±4 h; (II) HRT of 20±2 h and (III) HRT of 20±2 h with ethanol. Phases I and II showed no significant difference in the removal of LAS (63 ± 11-65 ± 12 %), DCF (37 ± 18-35 ± 11 %), IBU (43 ± 18-44 ± 16 %) and PRO (46 ± 25-51 ± 23 %) for 13±2-15 ± 2 mg L^-1, 106 ± 32-462 ± 294 μg L^-1, 166 ± 55-462 ± 213 μg L^-1 and 201 ± 113-250 ± 141 μg L^-1 influent, respectively. Higher TCS removal was obtained in phase I (72 ± 17 % for 127 ± 120 μg L^-1 influent) when compared to phase II (51 ± 13 % for 135 ± 119 μg L^-1 influent). This was due to its greater adsorption (40 %) in the initial phase. Phase III had higher removal of DCF (42 ± 10 % for 107 ± 26 μg L^-1 influent), IBU (50 ± 15 % for 164 ± 47 μg L^-1 influent) and TCS (85 ± 15 % for 185 ± 148 μg L^-1 influent) and lower removal of LAS (35 ± 14 % for 12 ± 3 mg L^-1 influent) and PRO (-142 ± 177 % for 188 ± 88 μg L^-1 influent). Bacteria similar to Syntrophobacter, Smithella, Macellibacteroides, Syntrophus, Blvii28_wastewater-sludge_group and Bacteroides were identified in phase I with relative abundance of 3.1 %-4.7 %. Syntrophobacter was more abundant (15.4 %) in phase II, while in phase III, it was Smithella (12.7 %) and Caldisericum (15.1 %). Regarding the Archaea Domain, Methanosaeta was more abundant in phases I (84 %) and II (67 %), while in phase III it was Methanobacterium (86 %).

Iron-based metal-organic framework: Synthesis, structure and current technologies for water reclamation with deep insight into framework integrity

Water is a supreme requirement for the existence of life, the contamination from the point and non-point sources are creating a great threat to the water ecosystem. Advance tools and techniques are required to restore the water quality and metal-organic framework (MOFs) with a tunable porous structure, striking physical and chemical properties are an excellent candidate for it. Fe-based MOFs, which developed rapidly in recent years, are foreseen as most promising to overcome the disadvantages of traditional water depolluting practices. Fe-MOFs with low toxicity and preferable stability possess excellent performance potential for almost all water remedying techniques in contrast to other MOF structures, especially visible light photocatalysis, Fenton, and Fenton-like heterogeneous catalysis. Fe-MOFs become essential tool for water treatment due to their high catalytic activity, abundant active site and pollutant-specific adsorption. However, the structural degradation under external chemical, photolytic, mechanical, and thermal stimuli is impeding Fe-MOFs from further improvement in activity and their commercialization. Understanding the shortcomings of structural integrity is crucial for large-scale synthesis and commercial implementation of Fe-MOFs-based water treatment techniques. Herein we summarize the synthesis, structure and recent advancements in water remediation methods using Fe-MOFs in particular more attention is paid for adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis with clear insight into the mechanisms involved. For ease of analysis, the pollutants have been classified into two major classes; inorganic pollutants and organic pollutants. In this review, we present for the first time a detailed insight into the challenges in employing Fe-MOFs for water remediation due to structural instability.

Hemarthria compressa—Aspergillus niger—Trichoderma pseudokoningii Mediated Trilateral Perspective for Bioremediation and Detoxification of Industrial Paper Sludge

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of different fungal species on the metal uptake from paper sludge by Hemarthria compressa L. Paper sludge (PS) in various concentrations (0, 30% and 60%) were used with four treatments of two fungal species (F0 = Control, F1 = Aspergillus niger, F2 = Trichoderma pseudokoningii, F3 = A. niger + T. pseudokoningii). Paper sludge as rooting medium steadily influenced growth and physio-biochemical attributes of H. compressa in F0. Results revealed discrete variations in growth attributes with different PS concentrations and each fungal treatment. The maximum damages in ionic homeostasis (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) due to PS toxicity were evident in parallel with declined chlorophyll concentration. The highest growth, total chlorophyll and biomass of the plants were observed when PS was treated with combined fungal strains (F3). Translocation factor decreased with F3 that is indicative of changes in Cd, Pb, and Cu movement to shoot from root. The plants with combined fungal treatment also showed greater catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) activity. Ions, such as Ca, Mg, and Na, also increased gradually with combined fungal treatment. The correlation matrix displayed a close association among diverse fungal and PS levels with multiple plant attributes. PCA-Biplot confirmed the outcome of correlational analyses among different characters of H. compressa. The combined fungal mediate the extraction of heavy metals from the paper sludge by H. compressa recommends the high accumulation of heavy metal (HM) and possible reutilization of metal free sludge as a fertilizer, for application in cultivated fields. Furthermore, the effects of fungal species on HM attenuation in PS are linear and can be used in different habitats. Advancement in such research work will also be helpful in understanding the mechanisms and enhancing the ability of other native microbes to remediate metals.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) anaerobic biodegradation occurs during acidogenesis

This is the first study to bring evidence on the anaerobic biodegradation of TBBPA occurring during acidogenesis in domestic sewage at environmentally relevant concentrations by complex microbial communities. This was accomplished by continuously operating two anaerobic structured bed reactors (ASTBR) for over 100 days under acidogenic (Acidogenic Reactor, AR) and multistep methanogenic (Methanogenic Reactor, MR) conditions. In the AR, the temporal carbohydrates consumption and the acetic acid production were strongly correlated with TBBPA removal by the Pearson's test. The spatial concentration of TBBPA and carbohydrates along the MR and the kinetic degradation profiles corroborate the AR results. It is hypothesized that TBBPA biodegradation in the studied conditions occurs during acidogenesis via the cometabolism supported by non-specific enzymes and the metabolism (dehalorespiration) established by electrons donors such as H₂, which are both produced during the macrocomponents breakdown in the early stages of the anaerobic digestion. The TBBPA mass balance showed that approximately 86.8 ± 0.05% and 97 ± 0.01% of the removed TBBPA was biodegraded in the AR and MR, respectively. Furthermore, TBBPA biodegradation went further than reductive debromination as total phenols were detected in the reactors' effluent.

Chemical safety assessment of transformation products of landfill leachate formed during the Fenton process

Organic chemicals identified in raw landfill leachate (LL) and their transformation products (TPs), formed during Fenton treatment, were analyzed for chemical safety following REACH guidelines. The raw LL was located in the metropolitan region of Campina Grande, in northeast Brazil. We elucidated 197 unique chemical structures, including 154 compounds that were present in raw LL and 82 compounds that were detected in the treated LL, totaling 39 persistent compounds and 43 TPs. In silico models were developed to identify and prioritize the potential level of hazard/risk these compounds pose to the environment and society. The models revealed that the Fenton process improved the biodegradability of TPs. Still, a slight increase in ecotoxicological effects was observed among the compounds in treated LL compared with those present in raw LL. No differences were observed for aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and antioxidant response element (ARE) mutagenicity. Similar behavior among both raw and treated LL samples was observed for biodegradability; Tetrahymena pyriformis, Daphnia magna, Pimephales promelas and ARE, AhR, and Ames mutagenicity. Overall, our results suggest that raw and treated LL samples have similar activity profiles for all endpoints other than biodegradability.

Removal and transformation of sulfamethoxazole in acclimated biofilters with various operation modes - Implications for full-scale application

The knowledge gaps regarding the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in biofilters include the effect of aeration, constant feeding with readily biodegradable organic carbon and the presence of reactive media such as manganese oxides (MnOx). Thus, the goal of this study was to assess the removal of SMX in lab-scale biofilters with various operation variables: aeration, presence of MnOx as an amendment of filtering medium and the presence of readily biodegradable organic carbon (acetate). The sand used in the experiment as a filtering medium was previously exposed to the presence of SMX and acetate, which provided acclimation of the biomass. The removal of SMX was complete (>99%) with the exception of the unaerated columns fed with the influent containing acetate, due to apparent slower rate of SMX degradation. The obtained results suggest that bacteria were able to degrade SMX as a primary substrate and the degradation of this compound was subsequent to the depletion of acetate. The LC-MS/MS analysis of the effluents indicated several biotransformation reactions for SMX: (di)hydroxylation, acetylation, nitrosation, deamonification, S-N bond cleavage and isoxazole-ring cleavage. The relative abundance of transformation products was decreased in the presence of MnOx or acetate. Based on the Microtox assay, only the effluents from the unaerated columns filled with MnOx were classified as non-toxic. The results offer important implications for the design of biofilters for the elimination of SMX, namely that biofilters offer the greatest performance when fed with secondary wastewater and operated as non-aerated systems with a filtering medium containing MnOx.

Insights into the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds from sewage sludge by two-stage mesophilic anaerobic digestion

The removal efficiencies (REs) of twenty-seven pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) (eight analgesic/anti-inflammatories, six antibiotics, four β-blockers, two antihypertensives/diuretics, three lipid regulators and four psychiatric drugs) were evaluated in a pilot-scale two-stage mesophilic anaerobic digestion (MAD) system treating thickened sewage sludge from a pilot-scale A²O™ wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) which was fed with wastewater from the pre-treatment of the full-scale WWTP Murcia Este (Murcia, Spain). The MAD system was long-term operated using two different sets of sludge retention times (SRTs) for the acidogenic (AcD) and methanogenic (MD) digesters (phase I, 2 and 12 days; and phase II, 5 and 24 days, in AcD and MD, respectively). Quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were used to estimate the absolute abundance of Bacteria, Archaea, and Fungi and investigate the structure, diversity and population dynamics of their communities in the AcD and MD effluents. The extension of the SRT from 12 (phase I) to 24 days (phase II) in the MD was significantly linked with an improved removal of carbamazepine, clarithromycin, codeine, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, lorazepam, and propranolol. The absolute abundances of total Bacteria and Archaea were higher in the MD regardless of the phase, while the diversity of bacterial and archaeal communities was lower in phase II, in both digesters. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) plots showed strong negative correlations among phyla Proteobacteria and Firmicutes and between genera Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina throughout the full experimental period. Strong positive correlations were revealed between the relative abundances of Methanospirillum and Methanoculleus and the methanogenesis performance parameters (volatile solids removal, CH₄ recovery rate and %CH₄ in the biogas), which were also related to longer SRT. The REs of several PhACs (naproxen, ketoprofen, ofloxacin, fenofibrate, trimethoprim, and atenolol) correlated positively (r > 0.75) with the relative abundances of specific bacterial and archaeal groups, suggesting their participation in biodegradation/biotransformation pathways.

Biostimulation is a valuable tool to assess pesticide biodegradation capacity of groundwater microorganisms

Groundwater is the main source for drinking water production globally. Groundwater unfortunately can contain micropollutants (MPs) such as pesticides and/or pesticide metabolites. Biological remediation of MPs in groundwater requires an understanding of natural biodegradation capacity and the conditions required to stimulate biodegradation activity. Thus, biostimulation experiments are a valuable tool to assess pesticide biodegradation capacity of field microorganisms. To this end, groundwater samples were collected at a drinking water abstraction aquifer at two locations, five different depths. Biodegradation of the MPs BAM, MCPP and 2,4-D was assessed in microcosms with groundwater samples, either without amendment, or amended with electron acceptor (nitrate or oxygen) and/or carbon substrate (dissolved organic carbon (DOC)). Oxygen + DOC was the most successful amendment resulting in complete biodegradation of 2,4-D in all microcosms after 42 days. DOC was most likely used as a growth substrate that enhanced co-metabolic 2,4-D degradation with oxygen as electron acceptor. Different biodegradation rates were observed per groundwater sample. Overall, microorganisms from the shallow aquifer had faster biodegradation rates than those from the deep aquifer. Higher microbial activity was also observed in terms of CO₂ production in the microcosms with shallow groundwater. Our results seem to indicate that shallow groundwater contains more active microorganisms, possibly due to their exposure to higher concentrations of both DOC and MPs. Understanding field biodegradation capacity is a key step towards developing further bioremediation-based technologies. Our results show that biostimulation has real potential as a technology for remediating MPs in aquifers in order to ensure safe drinking production.

Progress and prospects of applying carbon-based materials (and nanomaterials) to accelerate anaerobic bioprocesses for the removal of micropollutants

Carbon‐based materials (CBM), including activated carbon (AC), activated fibres (ACF), biochar (BC), nanotubes (CNT), carbon xenogels (CX) and graphene nanosheets (GNS), possess unique properties such as high surface area, sorption and catalytic characteristics, making them very versatile for many applications in environmental remediation. They are powerful redox mediators (RM) in anaerobic processes, accelerating the rates and extending the level of the reduction of pollutants and, consequently, affecting positively the global efficiency of their partial or total removal. The extraordinary conductive properties of CBM, and the possibility of tailoring their surface to address specific pollutants, make them promising as catalysts in the treatment of effluents containing diverse pollutants. CBM can be combined with magnetic nanoparticles (MNM) assembling catalytic and magnetic properties in a single composite (C@MNM), allowing their recovery and reuse after the treatment process. Furthermore, these composites have demonstrated extraordinary catalytic properties. Evaluation of the toxicological and environmental impact of direct and indirect exposure to nanomaterials is an important issue that must be considered when nanomaterials are applied. Though the chemical composition, size and physical characteristics may contribute to toxicological effects, the potential toxic impact of using CBM is not completely clear and is not always assessed. This review gives an overview of the current research on the application of CBM and C@MNM in bioremediation and on the possible environmental impact and toxicity.

Microbial community structure and co-occurrence are essential for methanogenesis and its contribution to phenanthrene degradation in paddy soil

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degradation under methanogenesis is an ideal approach to remediating PAH-polluted soil, the contribution of methanogenesis to soil PAH elimination and the relationships between microbial ecological characteristics and PAH degradation during this process remain unclear. Here, we conducted a short-term (60 days) incubation using a paddy soil amended with phenanthrene and examined the effects of a specific methanogenic inhibitor (2-bromoethanesulfonate, BES) on this process. As treatment assessments, the methane production activity (MPA), phenanthrene degradation rate (PDR), and microbial ecological characteristics were determined. The results indicated that BES significantly inhibited both soil MPA and PDR, and we detected a positive relationship between MPA and PDR. Furthermore, BES significantly altered the soil microbial community structure, and it was the microbial community structure but not α-diversity was significantly correlated with soil MPA and PDR. BES decentralized the co-occurrence of bacterial genera but intensified the co-occurrence of methanogens. Moreover, certain bacterial taxa, including Bacteroidetes-vadinHA17, Gemmatimonas, and Sporomusaceae, were responsible for the MPA and PDR in this paddy soil. Collectively, these findings confirm the role of methanogenesis in PAH elimination from paddy soil, and reveal the importance of microbial co-occurrence characteristics in the determination of soil MPA and pollutant metabolism.

Efficient anaerobic bioremediation of high-concentration benzo[a]pyrene in marine environments

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a persistent organic pollutant that may accumulate in sea sediments after oil spill or BaP chemical leakage accidents, considerably harms marine ecosystems and human health. Previous studies have been predominantly focused on its degradation at low concentrations, while the remediation of BaP pollution with high concentrations was neglected. Additionally, the metabolic pathways associated with its anaerobic degradation remain unclear. As a first attempt, super-efficient systems for BaP anaerobic degradation were established, and the corresponding metabolic pathways were elucidated in this study. The results showed that the BaP removal rate in BaP-only system with initial concentrations of 200 mg/L reached 3.09 mg/(L·d) within 45 days. Co-solvent, acetone promoted anaerobic BaP degradation (4.252 mg/(L·d)), while dichloromethane showed a newly-discovered co-metabolic effect. In the system with 500 mg/L of BaP and dichloromethane addition, the removal rate increased drastically (14.64 mg/(L·d)) at 400 mg/L turn point of BaP. Additionally, the corresponding microbial community-level metabolic network was firstly proposed.

Antibiotic transformation in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor linked to membrane biofilm microbial activity

Although extensive research to date has focused on enhancing removal rates of antibiotics from municipal wastewaters, the transformation products formed by anaerobic treatment processes remain understudied. The present work aims to examine the possible roles that the different microbial communities of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) play in the transformation of antibiotics during wastewater treatment. As part of this work, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, and ampicillin were added in separate stages to the influent of the AnMBR at incremental concentrations of 10, 50, and 250 μg/L each. Antibiotic-specific transformation products detected during each stage, as identified by high resolution LC-MS, are reported herein. Results suggest that both isoxazole (sulfamethoxazole) and β-lactam (ampicillin) ring opening could be facilitated by the AnMBR's bioprocess. Microbial community analysis results indicated that relative activity of the system's suspended biomass consistently shifted towards syntrophic groups throughout the duration of the experiment. Notable differences were also observed between the suspended biomass and the AnMBR's membrane biofilms. Membrane-attached biofilm communities showed high relative activities of several specific methanogenic (Methanothrix and Methanomethylovorans), syntrophic (Syntrophaceae), and sulfate-reducing (Desulfomonile) groups. Such groups have been previously identified as involved in the formation of the antibiotic degradation products observed in the effluent of the AnMBR. The activity of these communities within the biofilms likely confers certain advantages that aid in the biotransformation of the antibiotics tested.

Influence of metabolic cosubstrates on methanogenic potential and degradation of triclosan and propranolol in sanitary sewage

Triclosan (TCS) and propranolol (PRO) are emerging micropollutants that are difficult to remove in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, methanogenic potential (P) of anaerobic sludge submitted to TCS (3.6 ± 0.1 to 15.5 ± 0.1 mg L^-1) and PRO (6.1 ± 0.1 to 55.9 ± 1.2 mg L^-1) in sanitary sewage, was investigated in batch reactors. The use of cosubstrates (200 mg L^-1 of organic matter) ethanol, methanol:ethanol and fumarate was evaluated for micropollutant degradation. Without cosubstrates, P values for 5.0 ± 0.1 mgTCS L^-1, 15.5 ± 0.1 mgTCS L^-1 and 55.0 ± 1.3 mgPRO L^-1 were 50.53%, 98.24% and 17.66% lower in relation to Control assay (855 ± 5 μmolCH4) with sanitary sewage, without micropollutants and cosubstrates, respectively. The use of fumarate, ethanol and methanol:ethanol favored greater methane production, with P values of 2144 ± 45 μmolCH₄, 2960 ± 185 μmolCH₄ and 2239 ± 171 μmolCH₄ for 5.1 ± 0.1 mgTCS L^-1, respectively; and of 10,827 ± 185 μmolCH₄, 10,946 ± 108 μmolCH₄ and 10,809 ± 210 μmolCH₄ for 55.0 ± 1.3 mgPRO L^-1, respectively. Greater degradation of TCS (77.1 ± 0.1% for 5.1 ± 0.1 mg L^-1) and PRO (24.1 ± 0.1% for 55.9 ± 1.2 mg L^-1) was obtained with ethanol. However, with 28.5 ± 0.5 mg PRO L^-1, greater degradation (88.4 ± 0.9%) was obtained without cosubstrates. With TCS, via sequencing of rRNA 16S gene, for Bacteria Domain, greater abundance of phylum Chloroflexi and of the genera Longilinea, Arcobacter, Mesotoga and Sulfuricurvum were identified. With PRO, the genus VadinBC27 was the most abundant. Methanosaeta was dominant in TCS with ethanol, while in PRO without cosubstrates, Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta were the most abundant. The use of metabolic cosubstrates is a favorable strategy to obtain greater methanogenic potential and degradation of TCS and PRO.

Promoting the degradation of organic micropollutants in tertiary moving bed biofilm reactors by controlling growth and redox conditions

A novel process configuration was designed to increase biofilm growth in tertiary moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) by providing additional substrate from primary treated wastewater in a sidestream reactor under different redox conditions in order to improve micropollutant removal in MBBRs with low substrate availability. This novel recirculating MBBR was operated on pilot scale for 13 months, and a systematic increase was seen in the biomass concentration and the micropollutant degradation rates, compared to a tertiary MBBR without additional substrate. The degradation rates per unit carrier surface area increased in the order of ten times, and for certain micropollutants, such as atenolol, metoprolol, trimethoprim and roxithromycin, the degradation rates increased 20-60 times. Aerobic conditions were critical for maintaining high micropollutant degradation rates. With innovative MBBR configurations it may be possible to improve the biological degradation of organic micropollutants in wastewater. It is suggested that degradation rates be normalized to the carrier surface area, in favor of the biomass concentration, as this reflects the diffusion limitations of oxygen, and will facilitate the comparison of different biofilm systems.

Bioremediation of lignin derivatives and phenolics in wastewater with lignin modifying enzymes: Status, opportunities and challenges

Lignin modifying enzymes from fungi and bacteria are potential biocatalysts for sustainable mitigation of different potentially toxic pollutants in wastewater. Notably, the paper and pulp industry generates enormous amounts of wastewater containing high amounts of complex lignin-derived chlorinated phenolics and sulfonated pollutants. The presence of these compounds in wastewater is a critical issue from environmental and toxicological perspectives. Some chloro-phenols are harmful to the environment and human health, as they exert carcinogenic, mutagenic, cytotoxic, and endocrine-disrupting effects. In order to address these most urgent concerns, the use of oxidative lignin modifying enzymes for bioremediation has come into focus. These enzymes catalyze modification of phenolic and non-phenolic lignin-derived substances, and include laccase and a range of peroxidases, specifically lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP), versatile peroxidase (VP), and dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP). In this review, we explore the key pollutant-generating steps in paper and pulp processing, summarize the most recently reported toxicological effects of industrial lignin-derived phenolic compounds, especially chlorinated phenolic pollutants, and outline bioremediation approaches for pollutant mitigation in wastewater from this industry, emphasizing the oxidative catalytic potential of oxidative lignin modifying enzymes in this regard. We highlight other emerging biotechnical approaches, including phytobioremediation, bioaugmentation, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-based technology, protein engineering, and degradation pathways prediction, that are currently gathering momentum for the mitigation of wastewater pollutants. Finally, we address current research needs and options for maximizing sustainable biobased and biocatalytic degradation of toxic industrial wastewater pollutants.

Effects of pH, Temperature, Suspended Solids, and Biological Activity on Transformation of Illicit Drug and Pharmaceutical Biomarkers in Sewers

In-sewer stability of biomarkers is a critical factor for wastewater-based epidemiology, as it could affect the accuracy of the estimated prevalence of substances in the community. The spatiotemporal variations of environmental and biological conditions in sewers can influence the transformation of biomarkers. To date, the relationship between environmental variables and biomarker stability in sewers is poorly understood. Therefore, this study evaluated the transformation of common illicit drug and pharmaceutical biomarkers in laboratory sewer reactors with different levels of pH, temperature, and suspended solids. The correlations between degradation rates of 14 biomarkers, 3 controlled environmental variables (pH, temperature, and suspended solids concentration), and 3 biological activity indicators (sulfide production rate, methane production rate, and the removal rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD)) were assessed using correlation matrix, stepwise regression method, and principal component analysis. The consistent results affirmed the dominant effects of biological activities and pH on biomarker transformation in sewers, particularly for labile compounds, whereas the impact of temperature or suspended solids was less significant. This study enhances the understanding of factors affecting the fate of micropollutants in sewer systems and facilitates the interpretation of WBE results for assessing drug use and public health in communities.

Non-conventional water reuse in agriculture: A circular water economy

Due to the growing and diverse demands on water supply, exploitation of non-conventional sources of water has received much attention. Since water consumption for irrigation is the major contributor to total water withdrawal, the utilization of non-conventional sources of water for the purpose of irrigation is critical to assuring the sustainability of water resources. Although numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate and manage non-conventional water sources, little research has reviewed the suitability of available water technologies for improving water quality, so that water reclaimed from non-conventional supplies could be an alternative water resource for irrigation. This article provides a systematic overview of all aspects of regulation, technology and management to enable the innovative technology, thereby promoting and facilitating the reuse of non-conventional water. The study first reviews the requirements for water quantity and quality (i.e., physical, chemical, and biological parameters) for agricultural irrigation. Five candidate sources of non-conventional water were evaluated in terms of quantity and quality, namely rainfall/stormwater runoff, industrial cooling water, hydraulic fracturing wastewater, process wastewater, and domestic sewage. Water quality issues, such as suspended solids, biochemical/chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total nitrogen, bacteria, and emerging contaminates, were assessed. Available technologies for improving the quality of non-conventional water were comprehensively investigated. The potential risks to plants, human health, and the environment posed by non-conventional water reuse for irrigation are also discussed. Lastly, three priority research directions, including efficient collection of non-conventional water, design of fit-for-purpose treatment, and deployment of energy-efficient processes, were proposed to provide guidance on the potential for future research.

Application of Polyaluminium Chloride Coagulant in Urban River Water Treatment Influenced the Microbial Community in River Sediment

Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) has been widely used as a chemical coagulant in water treatment. However, little is known about the impact of PAC performance on the microbial community in sediments. In this study, the archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities in urban river sediments with and without PAC treatment were investigated. Prokaryotic diversity decreased at the PAC addition site (A2) and increased along with the river flow (from A3 to A4), while eukaryotic diversity was the opposite. The abundance of core microbiota showed a similar trend. For example, the dominant Proteobacteria presented the highest relative abundance in A1 (26.8%) and the lowest in A2 (15.3%), followed by A3 (17.5%) and A4 (23.0%). In contrast, Rozellomycota was more dominant in A2 (56.6%) and A3 (58.1%) than in A1 (6.2%) and A4 (16.3%). Salinity, total dissolved solids, and metal contents were identified as the key physicochemical factors affecting the assembly of core microorganisms. The predicted functions of archaea and fungi were mainly divided into methane cycling and saprotrophic nutrition, respectively, while bacterial function was more diversified. The above findings are helpful to enhance our understanding of microorganism response to PAC and have significance for water treatment within the framework of microecology.

Employ of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for pharmaceuticals ibuprofen and diclofenac removal in mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands

This study investigated the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization on the growth of wetland plants (Glyceria maxima), and treatment performance in constructed wetlands (CWs) under the stress of pharmaceuticals ibuprofen (IBU) and diclofenac (DCF). Results showed that the growth of G. maxima was significantly increased by AMF colonization. AMF significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) and soluble protein content in wetland plants, but the contents of malondialdehyde and O₂^•- were reduced. The removal efficiencies of TOC, PO₄^3--P, NH₄⁺-N, and TN were increased in AMF+ treatments by 6%, 11%, 15% and 11%, respectively. AMF increased the removal efficiencies of IBU and DCF by 6-14% and 2-21%, respectively, and reduced the content of their metabolites (2-OH IBU, CA IBU and 4'-OH DCF) in the effluent. Besides, the presence of AMF increased the contents of IBU and DCF in plant roots, while decreased their transportation to shoots. AMF symbiosis decreased the contents of IBU metabolites (2-OH IBU and CA IBU) but increased the contents of DCF metabolite (4'-OH DCF) in the roots of the host plant. In conclusion, these results indicated that AMF plays a promising role in CWs for emerging pollutants removal.

Phase Transfer and Biodegradation of Pesticides in Water-Sediment Systems Explored by Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis and Conceptual Modeling

Current approaches are often limited to evaluating the contribution of pesticide dissipation processes in water-sediment systems as both degradation and phase transfer, that is, sorption-desorption, contribute to the apparent decrease of pesticide concentration. Here, the dissipation of widely used herbicides acetochlor and S-metolachlor was examined in laboratory by water-sediment microcosm experiments under oxic and anoxic conditions. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) emphasized insignificant carbon isotope fractionation in the sediment, indicating prevailing pesticide degradation in the water phase. Conceptual modeling accounting for phase transfer and biodegradation indicated that biodegradation may be underestimated when phase transfer is not included. Phase transfer does not affect carbon isotope fractionation for a wide spectrum of molecules and environmental conditions, underscoring the potential of pesticide CSIA as a robust approach to evaluate degradation in water-sediment systems. CSIA coupled with the identification of transformation products by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry suggests the degradation of acetochlor and S-metolachlor to occur via nucleophilic substitution and the predominance of oxalinic acids as transformation products under both anoxic and oxic conditions. Altogether, combining the pesticide CSIA, the identification of transformation products, and the use of conceptual phase-transfer models improves the interpretation of pesticide dissipation in water-sediment systems.

Impact of long-term irrigation with municipal reclaimed wastewater on the uptake and degradation of organic contaminants in lettuce and leek

A two years drip irrigation of lettuce and leek crops with treated municipal wastewater without and with spiking with fourteen wastewater relevant contaminants at 10 μg/L concentration level was conducted under greenhouse cultivation conditions to investigate their potential accumulation in soil and leaves and to assess human health related risks. Lettuce and leek crops were selected as a worse-case scenario since leafy green vegetable has a high potential for organic contaminants uptake. The results revealed limited accumulation of contaminants in soil and plant leaves, their concentration levels being in the range of 1-30 ng/g and 1-660 ng/g range in soil and leaves, respectively. This was likely related to abiotic and biotic transformation or simply binding processes in soil, which limited contaminants plant uptake. This assumption was underpinned by studies of the enantiomeric fractionation of chiral compounds (e.g. climbazole and metoprolol) in soil as pieces of evidence of biodegradation and by the identification of transformation products or metabolites in leaves by means of liquid chromatography - high resolution - mass spectrometry using a suspect screening workflow. The high bioconcentration factors were not limited to compounds with intermediate Dow (100 to 1000) such as carbamazepine but also observed for hydrophilic compounds such as clarithromycin, hydrochlorothiazide and the food additives acesulfame and sucralose. This result assumed that accumulation was not only driven by passive processes (e.g. lipoidal diffusion through lipid bilayer cell membranes or Casparian strip) but might be supported by carrier-mediated transporters. As a whole, this study confirmed earlier reports on the a de minimis human health risk related to the consumption of raw leafy green vegetable irrigated with domestic TWW containing organic contaminants residues.

Antibiotics in wastewater: From its occurrence to the biological removal by environmentally conscious technologies

In this critical review, we explored the most recent advances about the fate of antibiotics on biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Although the occurrence of these pollutants in wastewater and natural streams has been investigated previously, some recent publications still expose the need to improve the detection strategies and the lack of information about their transformation products. The role of the antibiotic properties and the process operating conditions were also analyzed. The pieces of evidence in the literature associate several molecular properties to the antibiotic removal pathway, like hydrophobicity, chemical structure, and electrostatic interactions. Nonetheless, the influence of operating conditions is still unclear, and solid retention time stands out as a key factor. Additionally, the efficiencies and pathways of antibiotic removals on conventional (activated sludge, membrane bioreactor, anaerobic digestion, and nitrogen removal) and emerging bioprocesses (bioelectrochemical systems, fungi, and enzymes) were assessed, and our concern about potential research gaps was raised. The combination of different bioprocess can efficiently mitigate the impacts generated by these pollutants. Thus, to plan and design a process to remove and mineralize antibiotics from wastewater, all aspects must be addressed, the pollutant and process characteristics and how it is the best way to operate it to reduce the impact of antibiotics in the environment.

Fate of emerging and priority micropollutants during the sewage sludge treatment - Part 2: Mass balances of organic contaminants on sludge treatments are challenging

This paper analyzes the fate of 71 priority and emerging organic contaminants all along the treatment trains of sewage sludge treatment facilities in Paris including dewatering by centrifugation, thermal drying and anaerobic digestion. It aimed at proposing and applying a mass balances calculation methodology to each process and pollutant. This data validation strategy demonstrated the complexity to perform representative inlet/outlet sampling and analysis campaigns at industrial scales regarding organic compounds and to propose options to overcome this issue. Centrifugation and drying processes only implied physical mechanisms as phase separation and water elimination. Hence, correct mass balance were expected observed for organic contaminants if sampling and analysis campaigns were representative. This was the case for hydrophobic and neutral compounds. For the other more hydrophilic and charged compounds, the mass balances were scarcely correct. Thus, the conventional sampling and analytical practices used with sludge should be questioned and adapted to better take into account the high heterogeneity of sludge and the evolution of matrix effect within sludge treatment processes on micropollutant determination. For the biological anaerobic digestion process where degradations can occur and removals can be observed, the mass balances were deeply interpreted for 60 contaminants. This process contributed to the elimination above 70% of 21 detected compounds including 16 pharmaceuticals, 2 phthalates, 2 hormones and 1 perfluorinated compound. Removals of domperidone, propranolol, escitalopram, lidocaine, verapamil and cefoperazone under this condition were reported for the first time.

Synergistic interactions of Desulfovibrio and Petrimonas for sulfate-reduction coupling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation

Microbial sulfate-reduction coupling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation is an important process for the remediation of contaminated sediments. However, little is known about core players and their mechanisms in this process due to the complexity of PAH degradation and the large number of microorganisms involved. Here we analyzed potential core players in a black-odorous sediment using gradient-dilution culturing, isolation and genomic/metagenomic approaches. Along the dilution gradient, microbial PAH degradation and sulfate consumption were not decreased, and even a significant (p = 0.003) increase was observed in the degradation of phenanthrene although the microbial diversity declined. Two species, affiliated with Desulfovibrio and Petrimonas, were commonly present in all of the gradients as keystone taxa and showed as the dominant microorganisms in the single colony (SB8) isolated from the highest dilution culture with 93.49% and 4.73% of the microbial community, respectively. Desulfovibrio sp. SB8 and Petrimonas sp. SB8 could serve together as core players for sulfate-reduction coupling PAH degradation, in which Desulfovibrio sp. SB8 could degrade PAHs to hexahydro-2-naphthoyl through the carboxylation pathway while Petrimonas sp. SB8 might degrade intermediate metabolites of PAHs. This study provides new insights into the microbial sulfate-reduction coupling PAH degradation in black-odorous sediments.

Unravelling Microbial Communities Associated with Different Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid Types Undergoing Natural Source Zone Depletion Processes at a Legacy Petroleum Site

Petroleum contaminants are exposed to weathering when released into environment, resulting in the alteration of their chemical composition. Here, we investigated microbial communities through the soil profile at an industrial site, which was exposed to various petroleum products for over 50 years. The petroleum is present as light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) and is undergoing natural source zone depletion (NSZD). Microbial community composition was compared to the contaminant type, concentration, and its depth of obtained soil cores. A large population of Archaea, particularly Methanomicrobia and Methanobacteria and indication of complex syntrophic relationships of methanogens, methanotrophs and bacteria were found in the contaminated cores. Different families were enriched across the LNAPL types. Results indicate methanogenic or anoxic conditions in the deeper and highly contaminated sections of the soil cores investigated. The contaminant was highly weathered, likely resulting in the formation of recalcitrant polar compounds. This research provides insight into the microorganisms fundamentally associated with LNAPL, throughout a soil depth profile above and below the water table, undergoing NSZD processes at a legacy petroleum site. It advances the potential for integration of microbial community effects on bioremediation and in response to physicochemical partitioning of LNAPL components from different petroleum types.

Anaerobic degradation of xenobiotic organic contaminants (XOCs): The role of electron flow and potential enhancing strategies

In groundwater, deep soil layer, sediment, the widespread of xenobiotic organic contaminants (XOCs) have been leading to the concern of human health and eco-environment safety, which calls for a better understanding on the fate and remediation of XOCs in anoxic matrices. In the absence of oxygen, bacteria utilize various oxidized substances, e.g. nitrate, sulphate, metallic (hydr)oxides, humic substance, as terminal electron acceptors (TEAs) to fuel anaerobic XOCs degradation. Although there have been increasing anaerobic biodegradation studies focusing on species identification, degrading pathways, community dynamics, systematic reviews on the underlying mechanism of anaerobic contaminants removal from the perspective of electron flow are limited. In this review, we provide the insight on anaerobic biodegradation from electrons aspect - electron production, transport, and consumption. The mechanism of the coupling between TEAs reduction and pollutants degradation is deconstructed in the level of community, pure culture, and cellular biochemistry. Hereby, relevant strategies to promote anaerobic biodegradation are proposed for guiding to an efficient XOCs bioremediation.

Combined impact of organic matter, phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonia nitrogen on the process of blackwater

Blackwater events are frequently reported over the world and become a serious environmental problem. However, the mechanisms of blackwater occurrence are not fully understood yet. This study simulated the process of blackwater with the combined pollution in an orthogonal experiment, which had 4 factors (TOC, TP, NH4+-N, and NO3--N) and 4 levels (None, Low, Middle, and High). Results showed that the process of water condition changes was divided into two parts, which were "exogenous" and "algae-derived" blackwater, and the influence of four different pollutants on the occurrence of the blackwater was ranked as follows: TOC > TP > NO3--N > NH4+-N. With the increase of organic matter addition, the anaerobic condition in water was prolonged and the concentration of Fe2+ had a significant increase. In addition, under the None phosphorus condition, the descent rates of DO and COD in the water were reduced, and the algae bloom was obviously deferred. Moreover, the addition of organic matter or phosphorus changed the microbial community structure and led to different water processes. Particularly, only on the condition of the high content of TOC and phosphorus, the diversity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas, Paludibacter, and Bacteroides) increased significantly, which accounted for 51.4%, causing the significant production of S2- in the water. Water's lack of phosphorus showed a low rate of decomposition of organic matter, which might be the result of a considerable increase in the abundance of aerobic Trichococcus and Malikia. This study shows that organic matter and phosphorus have synergistic effect on blackwater occurrence. In the treatment of blackwater, the exogenous pollutant control should reduce the discharge of organic pollutants, and endogenous control should focus on phosphorus abatement and reduce nitrogen control.

Microorganisms in sediment microbial fuel cells: Ecological niche, microbial response, and environmental function

A sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) is a device that harvests electrical energy from sediments rich in organic matter. SMFCs have been attracting increasing amounts of interest in environmental remediation, since they are capable of providing a clean and inexhaustible source of electron donors or acceptors and can be easily controlled by adjusting the electrochemical parameters. The microorganisms inhabiting sediments and the overlying water play a pivotal role in SMFCs. Since the SMFC is applied in an open environment rather than in an enclosed chamber, the effects of the environment on the microbes should be intense and the microbial community succession should be extremely complex. Thus, this review aims to provide an overview of the microorganisms in SMFCs, which few previous review papers have reported. In this study, the anodic and cathodic niches for the microorganisms in SMFCs are summarized, how the microbial population and community interact with the SMFC environment is discussed, a new microbial succession strategy called the electrode stimulation succession is proposed, and recent developments in the environmental functions of SMFCs are discussed from the perspective of microorganisms. Future studies are needed to investigate the electrode stimulation succession, the environmental function and the electron transfer mechanism in order to boost the application of SMFCs for power generation and environmental remediation.

Occurrence, fate, and persistence of emerging micropollutants in sewage sludge treatment

Sludge generated at sewage treatment plants is of environmental concern due to the voluminous production and the presence of a high concentration of emerging contaminants (ECs). This review discusses the fate of ECs in sewage sludge treatment with an emphasis on fundamental mechanisms driving the degradation of compounds based on chemical properties of the contaminant and process operating conditions. The removal of ECs in sewage sludge through various treatment processes of sludge stabilization, such as anaerobic digestion (AD), composting, and pre-treatment methods (thermal, sonication, and oxidation) followed by AD, are discussed. Several transformation mechanisms and remediation strategies for the removal of ECs in sludge are summarized. The study concludes that pH, sludge type, and the types of functional groups are the key factors affecting the sorption of ECs to sludge. During conventional waste stabilization processes such as composting, the degradation of ECs depends on the type of feedstock (TOC, N, P, C/N, C/P) and the initial concentration of the contaminant. In AD, the degree of degradation depends on the hydrophilicity of the compound. The estrogenicity of the sludge may sometimes increase due to the conversion to estrogenic compounds. The pre-treatment techniques can increase the partitioning of ECs in the soluble fraction resulting in enhanced biodegradation up to 10-60%. However, the formation of by-products and loss of OH· to scavenging under high organic content during advanced oxidation processes can make the process uneconomical and require further research.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

In Europe, emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in groundwater is a growing research area. Prioritisation for monitoring EOCs in Europe was formalised in 2019 through the development of the first voluntary groundwater watch list (GWWL). Despite this, groundwater occurrence data in the peer reviewed literature for Europe has not been reviewed to date. Questions surrounding the effect, toxicity, movement in the subsurface and unsaturated zone make the process of regulating EOC use difficult. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification, and prioritisation of EOCs to be monitored in groundwater. This paper compiles evidence from the recent published studies from across Europe, since 2012, when the last major literature global review of EOCs in groundwater took place. A total of 39 studies were identified for review based on specific selection criteria (geography, publication date, sample size>10, inclusion of EOCs data). Data on specific compounds, and associated meta-data, are compiled and reviewed. The two most frequently detected EOCs, carbamazepine and caffeine, occurred in groundwater at concentrations of up to 2.3 and 14.8 μg/L, respectively. The most frequently reported category of compounds were 'Pharmaceuticals'; a highly studied group with 135 compounds identified within 31 of the 39 studies. In Europe, the majority of reviewed studies (23) were at a regional scale, looking specifically at EOCs in a specific city or aquifer. The use of analytical methods is not uniform across Europe, and this inevitably influences the current assessment of EOCs in groundwater. A correlation between the number of compounds analysed for, and the number detected in groundwater highlights the need for further studies, especially larger-scale studies throughout Europe. For the development of EU and national regulation, further work is required to understand the occurrence and impacts of EOCs in groundwater throughout Europe and elsewhere.

Current Status of and Future Perspectives in Bacterial Degradation of Benzo[a]pyrene

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is one the main pollutants belonging to the high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) class and its degradation by microorganisms remains an important strategy for its removal from the environment. Extensive studies have been carried out on the isolation and characterisation of microorganisms that can actively degrade low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs), and to a certain extent, the HMW-PAH pyrene. However, so far, limited work has been carried out on BaP biodegradation. BaP consists of five fused aromatic rings, which confers this compound a high chemical stability, rendering it less amenable to biodegradation. The current review summarizes the emerging reports on BaP biodegradation. More specifically, work carried out on BaP bacterial degradation and current knowledge gaps that limit our understanding of BaP degradation are highlighted. Moreover, new avenues of research on BaP degradation are proposed, specifically in the context of the development of "omics" approaches.

Degradation of RDX (Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) in contrasting coastal marine habitats: Subtidal non-vegetated (sand), subtidal vegetated (silt/eel grass), and intertidal marsh

Hundreds of explosive-contaminated marine sites exist globally, many of which contain the common munitions constituent hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX). Quantitative information about RDX transformation in coastal ecosystems is essential for management of many of these sites. Isotopically labelled RDX containing ¹⁵N in all 3 nitro groups was used to track the fate of RDX in three coastal ecosystem types. Flow-through mesocosms representing subtidal vegetated (silt/eel grass), subtidal non-vegetated (sand) and intertidal marsh ecosystems were continuously loaded with isotopically labelled RDX for 16-17 days. Sediment, pore-water and overlying surface water were analyzed to determine the distribution of RDX, nitroso-triazine transformation products (NXs) and nitrogen containing complete mineralization products, including ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, nitrous oxide and nitrogen gas. The marsh, silt, and sand ecotypes transformed 94%, 90% and 76% of supplied RDX, respectively. Total dissolved NXs accounted for 2%-4% of the transformed ¹⁵N-RDX. The majority of RDX transformation in the water column was by mineralization to inorganic N (dissolved and evaded; 64%-78% of transformed ¹⁵N-RDX). RDX was mineralized primarily to N₂O (62-74% of transformed ¹⁵N-RDX) and secondarily to N₂ (1-2% of transformed ¹⁵N-RDX) which exchanged with the atmosphere. Transformation of RDX was favored in carbon-rich lower redox potential sediments of the silt and marsh mesocosms where anaerobic processes of iron and sulfate reduction were most prevalent. RDX was most persistent in the carbon-poor sand mesocosm. Partitioning of ¹⁵N derived from RDX onto sediment and suspended particulates was negligible in the overall mass balance of RDX transformation (2%-3% of transformed ¹⁵N-RDX). The fraction of ¹⁵N derived from RDX that was sorbed or assimilated in sediment was largest in the marsh mesocosm (most organic carbon), and smallest in the sand mesocosm (largest grain size and least organic carbon). Sediment redox conditions and available organic carbon stores affect the fate of RDX in different coastal marine habitats.

Effects of foam nickel supplementation on anaerobic digestion: Direct interspecies electron transfer

Stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer with conductive materials is a promising strategy to overcome the limitation of electron transfer efficiency in syntrophic methanogenesis of industrial wastewater. This paper assessed the impact of conductive foam nickel (FN) supplementation on syntrophic methanogenesis and found that addition of 2.45 g/L FN in anaerobic digestion increased the maximum methane production rate by 27.4 % (on day 3) while decreasing the peak production time by 33 % as compared to the control with no FN. Cumulative methane production from day 2 to 6 was 14.5 % higher with addition of 2.45 g/L FN than in the control. Levels of FN in excess of 2.45 g/L did not show benefits. Cyclic voltammetry results indicated that the biofilm formed on the FN could generate electrons. The dominant bacterial genera in suspended sludge were Dechlorobacter and Rikenellaceae DMER64, whereas that in the FN biofilm was Clostridium sensu stricto 11. The dominant archaea Methanosaeta in the FN biofilm was enriched by 14.1 % as compared to the control.

Methanogenic potential of diclofenac and ibuprofen in sanitary sewage using metabolic cosubstrates

Diclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBU) are widely used anti-inflammatory drugs and are frequently detected in wastewater from Wastewater Treatment Plants and in aquatic environments. In this study, the methanogenic potential (P) of anaerobic sludge subjected to DCF (7.11 ± 0.02 to 44.41 ± 0.05 mg L^-1) and IBU (6.11 ± 0.01 to 42.61 ± 0.05 mg L^-1), in sanitary sewage, was investigated in batch reactors. Cosubstrates (200 mg L^-1 of organic matter) in the form of ethanol, methanol:ethanol and fumarate were tested separately for the removal of drugs. In the DCF assays, P was 6943 ± 121 μmolCH₄, 9379 ± 259 μmolCH_4, 9897 ± 212 μmolCH₄ and 11,530 ± 368 μmolCH₄ for control, fumarate, methanol:ethanol and ethanol conditions, respectively. In the IBU assays, under the same conditions, P was 6145 ± 101 μmolCH₄, 6947 ± 66 μmolCH₄, 8141 ± 191 μmolCH₄and 10,583 ± 512 μmolCH₄, respectively. Without cosubstrates, drug removal was below 18% for 43.10 ± 0.01 mgDCF L^-1 and 43.12 ± 0.03 mgIBU L^-1, respectively. Higher P and removal of DCF (28.24 ± 1.10%) and IBU (18.72 ± 1.60%) with ethanol was observed for 43.20 ± 0.01 mgDCF L^-1 and 43.42 ± 0.03 mgIBU L^-1, respectively. This aspect was better evidenced with DCF due to its molecular structure, a condition that resulted in a higher diversity of bacterial populations. Through the 16S rRNA sequencing, bacteria genera capable of performing aromatic ring cleavage, β-oxidation and oxidation of ethanol and fatty acids were identified. Higher relative abundance (>0.6%) was observed for Smithella, Sulfuricurvum and Synthophus for the Bacteria Domain and Methanosaeta (>79%) for the Archaea Domain. The use of ethanol favored greater mineralization of organic matter and greater methane production, which can directly assist in the metabolic pathways of microorganisms.

Influence of polymer type and carbon nanotube properties on carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposite biodegradation

The interaction of anaerobic microorganisms with carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposites (CNT/PNC) will play a major role in determining their persistence and environmental fate at the end of consumer use when these nano-enabled materials enter landfills and encounter wastewater. Motivated by the need to understand how different parameters (i.e., polymer type, microbial phenotype, CNT characteristics) influence CNT/PNC biodegradation rates, we have used volumetric biogas measurements and kinetic modeling to study biodegradation as a function of polymer type and CNT properties. In one set of experiments, oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) with a range of CNT loadings 0-5% w/w were incorporated into poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) matrices and subjected to biodegradation by an anaerobic microbial community. For each CNT/PNC, complete polymer biodegradation was ultimately observed, although the rate of biodegradation was inhibited above certain critical CNT loadings dependent upon the polymer type. Higher loadings of pristine MWCNTs were needed to decrease the rate of polymer biodegradation compared to O-MWCNTs, an effect ascribed principally to differences in CNT dispersion within the polymer matrices. Above certain CNT loadings, a CNT mat of similar shape to the initial PNC was formed after polymer biodegradation, while below this threshold, CNT aggregates fragmented in the media. In situations where biodegradation was rapid, methanogen growth was disproportionately inhibited compared to the overall microbial community. Analysis of the results obtained from this study indicates that the inhibitory effect of CNTs on polymer biodegradation rate is greatest under conditions (i.e., polymer type, microbial phenotype, CNT dispersion) where biodegradation of the neat polymer is slowest. This new insight provides a means to predict the environmental fate, persistence, and transformations of CNT-enabled polymer materials.

Dissipation of Herbicide Methiozolin and Its Metabolites in Aerobic Sediment-Water Systems

Methiozolin is a novel herbicide for controlling annual bluegrass. After applying ¹⁴C labelled methiozolin in two sediment (clay loam and sand)-water systems under aerobic conditions, its distribution, half-life, and metabolites within 300 days were investigated. The mass balance ranged within 92.0%-104.4% of applied radioactivity (AR). Radioactivity in the water declined sharply from 94.4% to 0.5% AR, while in the sediment it increased to 83.9% AR at 14 days before declining to 9.1% AR. The volatiles were minimal (< 0.5% AR), and the evolved labelled CO₂ accounted for up to ~ 33.4% AR. From Radio-HPLC analysis, labelled methiozolin in water decreased from 108.9% to 0% AR, while a maximum of 15.1% AR remained in the sediment at the end. Eight metabolites were detected, all at minor levels and accounting for < 5.5% AR. The half-life of labelled methiozolin in the total sediment-water systems were 50.7 and 38.7 days for clay loam and sand, respectively.

Synergistic Effects of Carbon Dots and Palladium Nanoparticles Enhance the Sonocatalytic Performance for Rhodamine B Degradation in the Absence of Light

Carbon dot (CD) and palladium nanoparticle (Pd NP) composites are semiconducting materials having tremendous applications in catalysis with suitable band gaps. However, their combination with a suitable polymer matrix in sonophotocatalysis has not been explored. Herein, we have synthesized and characterized a new nanohybrid catalyst from a polyamide cross-linked CD-polymer and subsequent deposition of Pd NPs. A sonocatalytic activity of 99% rhodamine B dye degradation was achieved in mere 5 min in the dark. A model catalyst replacing CDs with benzene and other control studies revealed that the synergistic effects of CDs and Pd NPs enhance the sonocatalytic activity of the nanohybrid catalyst. Interestingly, visible light did not influence the activity significantly. Mechanistic investigations suggest that generation of reactive oxygen species on the surface of the CD-polymer initiated by ultrasound, which is further facilitated by Pd NPs, is the key for remarkable catalytic activity (a rate constant of 0.99 min-1). Recyclable heterogeneous catalysts under ambient conditions are promising for exploring sono-assisted dark catalysis for several avenues.
