Antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in groundwater: A global review on dissemination, sources, interactions, environmental and human health risks

Physiological-biochemical responses and transcriptomic analysis reveal the effects and mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole on the carbon fixation function of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The occurrence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is characterized by low concentration and pseudo-persistence. However, the toxic effects and mechanisms of SMX, especially for low concentration and long-term exposure, are still not clear. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of SMX on carbon fixation-related biological processes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa at population, physiological-biochemical, and transcriptional levels. Results showed that 1-1000 μg/L SMX significantly inhibited the dry weight and carbon fixation rate of C. pyrenoidosa during 21 d. The upregulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, as well as the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) demonstrated that SMX posed oxidative damage to C. pyrenoidosa. SMX inhibited the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA), and consequently stimulated the activity of Rubisco. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that SMX concentration was positively correlated with Rubisco and CAT while exposure time was negatively correlated with CA. Transcriptional analysis showed that the synthesis of chlorophyll-a was stabilized by regulating the diversion of protoporphyrin IX and the chlorophyll cycle. Meanwhile, multiple CO2 compensation mechanisms, including photorespiratory, C4-like CO2 compensation and purine metabolism pathways were triggered in response to the CO2 requirements of Rubisco. This study provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive assessment of the ecological risk of SMX.

Quantitative microbial risk assessment for ingestion of antibiotic resistance genes from private wells contaminated by human and livestock fecal sources

We used quantitative microbial risk assessment to estimate ingestion risk for intI1, erm(B), sul1, tet(A), tet(W), and tet(X) in private wells contaminated by human and/or livestock feces. Genes were quantified with five human-specific and six bovine-specific microbial source-tracking (MST) markers in 138 well-water samples from a rural Wisconsin county. Daily ingestion risk (probability of swallowing ≥1 gene) was based on daily water consumption and a Poisson exposure model. Calculations were stratified by MST source and soil depth over the aquifer where wells were drilled. Relative ingestion risk was estimated using wells with no MST detections and >6.1 m soil depth as a referent category. Daily ingestion risk varied from 0 to 8.8 × 10-1 by gene and fecal source (i.e., human or bovine). The estimated number of residents ingesting target genes from private wells varied from 910 (tet(A)) to 1,500 (intI1 and tet(X)) per day out of 12,000 total. Relative risk of tet(A) ingestion was significantly higher in wells with MST markers detected, including wells with ≤6.1 m soil depth contaminated by bovine markers (2.2 [90% CI: 1.1-4.7]), wells with >6.1 m soil depth contaminated by bovine markers (1.8 [1.002-3.9]), and wells with ≤6.1 m soil depth contaminated by bovine and human markers simultaneously (3.1 [1.7-6.5]). Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were not necessarily present in viable microorganisms, and ingestion is not directly associated with infection. However, results illustrate relative contributions of human and livestock fecal sources to ARG exposure and highlight rural groundwater as a significant point of exposure.IMPORTANCEAntibiotic resistance is a global public health challenge with well-known environmental dimensions, but quantitative analyses of the roles played by various natural environments in transmission of antibiotic resistance are lacking, particularly for drinking water. This study assesses risk of ingestion for several antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the class 1 integron gene (intI1) in drinking water from private wells in a rural area of northeast Wisconsin, United States. Results allow comparison of drinking water as an exposure route for antibiotic resistance relative to other routes like food and recreational water. They also enable a comparison of the importance of human versus livestock fecal sources in the study area. Our study demonstrates the previously unrecognized importance of untreated rural drinking water as an exposure route for antibiotic resistance and identifies bovine fecal material as an important exposure factor in the study setting.

Transfer and accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial pathogens in the mice gut due to consumption of organic foods

Over the last few decades, organic food demand has grown largely because of increasing personal health concerns. Organic farming introduces antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) into foods. However, potential effects of organic foods on the gut microbiome and ARGs have been overlooked. Using high-throughput quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology, we examined 132 ARGs from major classes, eight transposase genes, universal class I integron-integrase gene (intI), clinical class I integron-integrase gene (cintI), and the bacterial community in mouse gut after 8 weeks with an either organic or inorganic lettuce and wheat diet. A total of 8 types of major ARGs and 10 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected in mice gut, including tetracycline, multidrug, sulfonamide, aminoglycoside, beta-lactamase, chloramphenicol, MLSB and vancomycin resistance genes. We found that abundance and diversity of ARGs, mobile gene elements, and potential ARB in the gut increased with time after consumption of organic foods, whereas no significant changes were observed in inorganic treated groups. Moreover, MGEs, including IS613, Tp614 and tnpA_03 were found to play an important role in regulating ARG profiles in the gut microbiome following consumption of organic foods. Importantly, feeding organic food increased the relative abundance of the potentially antibiotic-resistant pathogens, Bacteroides and Streptococcus. Our results confirm that there is an increasing risk of ARGs and ARB in the gut microbiome, which highlights the importance of organic food industries taking into account the potential accumulation and transmission of ARGs as a risk factor.

Unraveling the mystery of antibiotic resistance genes in green and red Antarctic snow

Antarctic snow is a thriving habitat for a diverse array of complex microorganisms, and can present in different colors due to algae blooms. However, the potential role of Antarctic snow as reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has not been studied. Using metagenomic sequencing, we studied ARGs in green-snow and red-snow on the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. Alpha and beta diversities of ARGs, as well as co-occurrence between ARGs and bacteria were assessed. The results showed that a total of 525 ARGs conferring resistance to 30 antibiotic classes were detected across the samples, with half of the ARGs presented in all samples. Green-snow exhibited a higher number of ARGs compared to red-snow. The most abundant ARGs conferring resistance to commonly used antibiotics, including disinfecting agents and antiseptics, peptide, isoniazid, MLS, fluoroquinolone, aminocoumarin, etc. Multidrug resistance genes stood out as the most diverse and abundant, with antibiotic efflux emerging as the dominant resistance mechanism. Interestingly, the composition of ARGs in green-snow markedly differed from that in red-snow, highlighting distinct ARG profiles. Beta-diversity partitioning showed a higher contribution of nestedness for ARG's variation in green-snow, while higher contribution of turnover in red-snow. Furthermore, the co-occurrence analysis between ARGs and bacteria unveiled intricate relationships, indicating that certain ARGs may have multiple potential hosts. The observed differences in co-occurrence networks between green-snow and red-snow suggested distinct host relationships between ARGs and bacteria in these colored snows. Given the increasing appearance of the colored snow around the world due to the climate change, the results shed light on the mystery and potential implication of ARGs in green and red Antarctic snow.

Assessment of sulfamethoxazole removal by three wetland plant species under hydroponic conditions: uptake, accumulation, and physiological responses

Plants play a crucial role as a removal pathway in constructed wetlands, demonstrating the ability to absorb and tolerate antibiotics from wastewater. However, the specific contribution of plants in this regard has not yet to be sufficiently established. To gain a more comprehensive insight into the associated processes, we selected three common wetland plant species, Canna indica L. (C. indica), Cyperus alternifolius L. (C. alternifolius), and Thalia dealbata Fraser (T. dealbata), to evaluate their capacity for uptake, accumulation, and physiological response in the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at varying initial concentrations (10, 30, 100, and 300 µg/L) under hydroponic conditions. The results showed that SMX removal was more efficient at lower concentrations (10 and 30 µg/L) than at higher concentrations (100 and 300 µg/L). Moreover, plant systems were found to consistently outperform unplanted systems in SMX removal. Among the assessed species, C. indica was identified as being relatively effective in the removal of SMX, whereas the performance of C. alternifolius was notably less pronounced. A positive correlation was observed between the concentration of SMX in the plant tissues and that in the external aqueous medium. However, plant tissue residues contributed only a minor fraction to the overall removal of SMX. Wetland plants absorb SMX through their roots, and we accordingly detected significantly higher concentrations in submerged plant tissues. Furthermore, we also detected reductions in net photosynthetic rates indicative of potential phytotoxicity, which is associated with the accumulation of antibiotic in the shoot tissues. Accumulation of SMX in the roots and rhizomes was also found to be associated with the development of shorter roots, with this effect becoming more pronounced with an increase in the concentration of exogenous SMX. However, despite these adverse effects, plants can detoxify antibiotics via the glutathione pathway. Of the assessed plant species, C. indica was identified as the most SMX tolerant, as indicated by Km and Vmax values, with C. alternifolius being the least tolerant. Our findings in this study reveal the potential value of wetland plants in the sequestration of antibiotics and provide evidence for the underlying mechanisms of action. These findings could make an important contribution to the implementation of phytoremediation in antibiotic-contaminated water.

Revealing discrepancies and drivers in the impact of lomefloxacin on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial community growth and succession

The coexistence of antibiotics and nitrates has raised great concern about antibiotic's impact on denitrification. However, conflicting results in these studies are very puzzling, possibly due to differences in microbial succession stages. This study investigated the effects of the high-priority urgent antibiotic, lomefloxacin (LOM), on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial growth and succession. The results demonstrated that LOM's impact on denitrification varied significantly across three successional stages, with the most pronounced effects exhibited in the initial stage (53.8% promotion at 100 ng/L-LOM, 84.6% inhibition at 100 μg/L-LOM), followed by the decline stage (13.3-18.2% inhibition), while no effect in the stable stage. Hence, a distinct pattern encompassing susceptibility, insusceptibility, and sub-susceptibility in LOM's impact on denitrification was discovered. Microbial metabolism and environment variation drove the pattern, with bacterial numbers and antibiotic resistance as primary influencers (22.5% and 15.3%, p < 0.01), followed by carbon metabolism and microbial community (5.0% and 3.68%, p < 0.01). The structural equation model confirmed results reliability. Bacterial numbers and resistance influenced susceptibility by regulating compensation and bacteriostasis, while carbon metabolism and microbial community impacted energy, electron transfer, and gene composition. These findings provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between antibiotics and denitrification patterns in groundwater.

Comprehensive evaluation of antibiotics pollution the Yangtze River basin, China: Emission, multimedia fate and risk assessment

Antibiotics have attracted global attention because of their potential ecological and health risks. The emission, multimedia fate and risk of 18 selected antibiotics in the entire Yangtze River basin were evaluated by using a level Ⅳ fugacity model. High antibiotic emissions were found in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin. The total antibiotic emissions in the Yangtze River basin exceeded 1600 tons per year between 2013 and 2021. The spatial distribution of antibiotics concentration was the upper Yangtze River > middle Yangtze River > lower Yangtze River, which is positively correlated with animal husbandry size in the basin. Temperature and precipitation increases may decrease the antibiotic concentrations in the environment. Transfer fluxes showed that source emission inputs, advection processes, and degradation fluxes contributed more to the total input and output. High ecological risks in the water environment were found in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. The comprehensive health risk assessment through drinking water and fish consumption routes showed that a small part of the Yangtze River basin is at medium risk, and children have a relatively high degree of health risk. This study provides a scientific basis for the pollution control of antibiotics at the basin scale.

Urban agglomerations as an environmental dimension of antibiotics transmission through the "One Health" lens

The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in different media have been widely reported; however, their occurrence in the environmental dimension of the Chinese urban agglomerations has received less attention, especially in bioaccumulation and health risks of antibiotics through the "One Health" lens. The review presents the current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation, as well as health exposure risks in urban agglomerations through the "One Health" lens, and identifies current information gaps. The reviewed studies suggested antibiotic concentrations in water and soil were more sensitive to social indicators of urban agglomerations than those in sediment. The ecological risk and resistance risk of antibiotics in water were much higher than those of sediments, and the high-risk phenomenon occurred at a higher frequency in urban agglomerations. Erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O), amoxicillin (AMOX) and norfloxacin (NFC) were priority-controlled antibiotics in urban waters. Tetracyclines (TCs) posed medium to high risks to soil organisms in the soil of urban agglomerations. Health risk evaluation based on dietary intake showed that children had the highest dietary intake of antibiotics in urban agglomerations. The health risk of antibiotics was higher in children than in other age groups. Our results also demonstrated that dietary structure might impact health risks associated with target antibiotics in urban agglomerations to some extent.

Cytoprotective alginate microcapsule serves as a shield for microalgal encapsulation defensing sulfamethoxazole threats and safeguarding nutrient recovery

Microalgal encapsulation technology is expected to broaden more possibilities for employing microalgae for upgrading conventional biological wastewater treatment. However, only limited and fragmented information is currently available on microalgal encapsulation and pollutant removal. It is ambiguous whether it hold potential for wastewater treatment. Particularly, it remains to be determined whether this technology can provide more possibilities in harsh sewage environments. Here, potential of encapsulated technology to recover nutrients from wastewater was examined, simultaneously compared with commonly adopted suspended system. Results indicate the encapsulated microalgal system showed outstanding advantages in nutrient recovery and defense against antibiotic threats. Moreover, by examining the cellular oxidative stress response and changes of the photosynthetic system, the encapsulated system exhibited potential cytoprotective advantages to microalgal cells for defensing antibiotic threats. Molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the differences among superficial aggregation between the nutrients' ions and molecular sulfamethoxazole on the cross-linked alginate microcapsule surface dominated the nutrient recovery and cytoprotective functions. Ultimately, the molecular nature of pollutants was found to be the most critical aspect for predicting application of this microalgal microcapsule. Cytoprotective systems created with alginate microcapsules can potentially handle more diverse threats with a single type of surface charge in their outermost layer.

Occurrence and source identification of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in groundwater surrounding urban hospitals

Urban groundwater, serving as a critical reservoir for potable water, faces susceptibility to contamination from discrete sources such as hospital wastewater. This study investigates the distribution and plausible origins of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban groundwater, drawing comparisons between areas proximal to hospitals and non-hospital areas. Ofloxacin and oxytetracycline emerged as the prevalent antibiotics across all samples, with a discernibly richer array of antibiotic types observed in groundwater sourced from hospital-adjacent regions. Employing a suite of multi-indicator tracers encompassing indicator drugs, Enterococci, ammonia, and Cl/Br mass ratio, discernible pollution from hospital or domestic sewage leakage was identified in specific wells, correlating with an escalating trajectory in antibiotic contamination. Redundancy analysis underscored temperature and dissolved organic carbon as principal environmental factors influencing antibiotics distribution in groundwater. Network analysis elucidated the facilitating role of mobile genetic elements, such as int1 and tnpA-02 in propagating ARGs. Furthermore, ARGs abundance exhibited positive correlations with temperature, pH and metallic constituents (e.g., Cu, Pb, Mn and Fe) (p < 0.05). Notably, no conspicuous correlation manifested between antibiotics and ARGs. These findings accentuate the imperative of recognizing the peril posed by antibiotic contamination in groundwater proximal to hospitals and advocate for the formulation of robust prevention and control strategies to mitigate the dissemination of antibiotics and ARGs.

CPR bacteria and DPANN archaea play pivotal roles in response of microbial community to antibiotic stress in groundwater

The accumulation of antibiotics in the natural environment can disrupt microbial population dynamics. However, our understanding of how microbial communities adapt to the antibiotic stress in groundwater ecosystems remains limited. By recovering 2675 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from 66 groundwater samples, we explored the effect of antibiotics on bacterial, archaeal, and fungal communities, and revealed the pivotal microbes and their mechanisms in coping with antibiotic stress. The results indicated that antibiotics had the most significant influence on bacterial and archaeal communities, while the impact on the fungal community was minimal. Analysis of co-occurrence networks between antibiotics and microbes revealed the critical roles of Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR) bacteria and DPANN archaea, two representative microbial groups in groundwater ecosystem, in coping with antibiotic resistance and enhancing network connectivity and complexity. Further genomic analysis demonstrated that CPR bacteria carried approximately 6 % of the identified antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), indicating their potential to withstand antibiotics on their own. Meanwhile, the genomes of CPR bacteria and DPANN archaea were found to encode diverse biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) responsible for producing antimicrobial metabolites, which could not only assist CPR and DPANN organisms but also benefit the surrounding microbes in combating antibiotic stress. These findings underscore the significant impact of antibiotics on prokaryotic microbial communities in groundwater, and highlight the importance of CPR bacteria and DPANN archaea in enhancing the overall resilience and functionality of the microbial community in the face of antibiotic stress.

Efficacy of new generation biosorbents for the sustainable treatment of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes from polluted waste effluent

Antimicrobials are frequently used in both humans and animals for the treatment of bacterially-generated illnesses. Antibiotic usage has increased for more than 40% from last 15 years globally per day in both human populations and farm animals leading to the large-scale discharge of antibiotic residues into wastewater. Most antibiotics end up in sewer systems, either directly from industry or healthcare systems, or indirectly from humans and animals after being partially metabolized or broken down following consumption. To prevent additional antibiotic compound pollution, which eventually impacts on the spread of antibiotic resistance, it is crucial to remove antibiotic residues from wastewater. Antibiotic accumulation and antibiotic resistance genes cannot be effectively and efficiently eliminated by conventional sewage treatment plants. Because of their high energy requirements and operating costs, many of the available technologies are not feasible. However, the biosorption method, which uses low-cost biomass as the biosorbent, is an alternative technique to potentially address these problems. An extensive literature survey focusing on developments in the field was conducted using English language electronic databases, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Pubag, Google books, and ResearchGate, to understand the relative value of the available antibiotic removal methods. The predominant techniques for eliminating antibiotic residues from wastewater were categorized and defined by example. The approaches were contrasted, and the benefits and drawbacks were highlighted. Additionally, we included a few antibiotics whose removal from aquatic environments has been the subject of extensive research. Lastly, a few representative publications were identified that provide specific information on the removal rates attained by each technique. This review provides evidence that biosorption of antibiotic residues from biological waste using natural biosorbent materials is an affordable and effective technique for eliminating antibiotic residues from wastewater.

Occurrence characteristics and influencing factors of antibiotic resistance genes in rural groundwater in Henan Province

This study determined the antibiotic-resistant gene (ARG) contents of 34 groundwater samples in Henan Province collected from September to October 2022, then assessed the roles of both water quality parameters and intI1 in ARG propagation in groundwater. The results show that there existed universal ARG pollution in groundwater, and sulfonamides-, β-lactem-, and tetracycline-resistance genes were the most prevalent gene types during the time. Sul1 contributed the majority proportion of the total resistance genes (TARGs). The prevalence of ESBLs gene blaTEM and the occurrence of Carbapenems resistant gene blaOXA-1 suggests the pollution of high-risk ARGs in groundwater demands more attention. IntI1 is prevalent and had a significantly positive correlation with almost 50% ARGs, indicating its contribution to ARG propagation in groundwater. Well types contribute little to ARG propagation in rural groundwater of Henan, which means the protective facilities established by the local government for public wells can effectively prevent contamination from exogenous ARGs. However, the economic level has no impact on the abundance of ARGs in rural groundwater, which suggests the local government should pay greater attention to investment in controlling ARG pollution in Henan rural areas.

A review on the antibiotic florfenicol: Occurrence, environmental fate, effects, and health risks

Florfenicol, as a replacement for chloramphenicol, can tightly bind to the A site of the 23S rRNA in the 50S subunit of the 70S ribosome, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and bacterial proliferation. Due to the widespread use in aquaculture and veterinary medicine, florfenicol has been detected in the aquatic environment worldwide. Concerns over the effects and health risks of florfenicol on target and non-target organisms have been raised in recent years. Although the ecotoxicity of florfenicol has been widely reported in different species, no attempt has been made to review the current research progress of florfenicol toxicity, hormesis, and its health risks posed to biota. In this study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to summarize the effects of florfenicol on various organisms including bacteria, algae, invertebrates, fishes, birds, and mammals. The generation of antibiotic resistant bacteria and spread antibiotic resistant genes, closely associated with hormesis, are pressing environmental health issues stemming from overuse or misuse of antibiotics including florfenicol. Exposure to florfenicol at μg/L-mg/L induced hormetic effects in several algal species, and chromoplasts might serve as a target for florfenicol-induced effects; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are completely lacking. Exposure to high levels (mg/L) of florfenicol modified the xenobiotic metabolism, antioxidant systems, and energy metabolism, resulting in hepatotoxicity, renal toxicity, immunotoxicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, obesogenic effects, and hormesis in different animal species. Mitochondria and the associated energy metabolism are suggested to be the primary targets for florfenicol toxicity in animals, albeit further in-depth investigations are warranted for revealing the long-term effects (e.g., whole-life-cycle impacts, multigenerational effects) of florfenicol, especially at environmental levels, and the underlying mechanisms. This will facilitate the evaluation of potential hormetic effects and construction of adverse outcome pathways for environmental risk assessment and regulation of florfenicol.

Examining Antimicrobial Resistance in Escherichia coli: A Case Study in Central Virginia's Environment

While environmental factors may contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria, many aspects of environmental antibiotic pollution and resistance remain unknown. Furthermore, the level of AMR in Escherichia coli is considered a reliable indicator of the selection pressure exerted by antimicrobial use in the environment. This study aimed to assess AMR variance in E. coli isolated from diverse environmental samples, such as animal feces and water from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and drainage areas of different land use systems in Central Virginia. In total, 450 E. coli isolates obtained between August 2020 and February 2021 were subjected to susceptibility testing against 12 antimicrobial agents approved for clinical use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Approximately 87.8% of the tested isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, with 3.1% showing multi-drug resistance. Streptomycin resistance was the most common (73.1%), while susceptibility to chloramphenicol was the highest (97.6%). One isolate obtained from WWTPs exhibited resistance to seven antimicrobials. AMR prevalence was the highest in WWTP isolates, followed by isolates from drainage areas, wild avians, and livestock. Among livestock, horses had the highest AMR prevalence, while cattle had the lowest. No significant AMR difference was found across land use systems. This study identifies potential AMR hotspots, emphasizing the environmental risk for antimicrobial resistant E. coli. The findings will aid policymakers and researchers, highlighting knowledge gaps in AMR-environment links. This nationally relevant research offers a scalable AMR model for understanding E. coli ecology. Further large-scale research is crucial to confirm the environmental impacts on AMR prevalence in bacteria.

A database on the abundance of environmental antibiotic resistance genes

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a severe threat to global health. The wide distribution of environmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can be transferred between microbiota, especially clinical pathogens and human commensals, contributed significantly to AMR. However, few databases on the spatiotemporal distribution, abundance, and health risk of ARGs from multiple environments have been developed, especially on the absolute level. In this study, we compiled the ARG occurrence data generated by a high-throughput quantitative PCR platform from 1,403 samples in 653 sampling sites across 18 provinces in China. The database possessed 291,870 records from five types of habitats on the abundance of 290 ARGs, as well as 8,057 records on the abundance of 30 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) from 2013 to 2020. These ARGs conferred resistance to major common types of antibiotics (a total of 15 types) and represented five major resistance mechanisms, as well as four risk ranks. The database can provide information for studies on the dynamics of ARGs and is useful for the health risk assessment of AMR.

Evaluation of different functionalization methodologies for improving the removal of three target antibiotics from wastewater by a brewery waste activated carbon

This work aims to increase the efficiency of an activated carbon produced from brewery waste (AC) in the removal of three target antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole (SMX), trimethoprim (TMP), and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) by surface incorporation of oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur groups. AC was produced using spent brewery grains (the most abundant waste from the brewing industry) as raw material, K2CO3 as activating agent and microwave energy for pyrolysis. Then, seven different functionalized AC were prepared, characterized for their physicochemical properties, and tested for adsorption (%) of SMX, TMP and CIP from three different matrices (ultrapure water (pH ~5-6), buffered ultrapure water (pH 8), and effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP effluent (pH 8)), under batch operation. Based on the obtained results, an oxygen functionalized AC was selected for further characterization and studies on the adsorption of the target antibiotics from the WWTP effluent. Kinetic results fitted the pseudo-second order model and the equilibrium isotherms were adequately described by the Langmuir model, reaching maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of 124 ± 1 μmol g-1, 315 ± 2 μmol g-1 and 201 ± 5 μmol g-1 for SMX, TMP and CIP, respectively. The selected functionalization increased qm by up to 58 % in comparison with the non-functionalized AC. The oxygen modified AC produced from a biomass waste remarkably improved its performance for an efficient application in the removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Antibiotic resistance genes associated with size-segregated bioaerosols from wastewater treatment plants: A review

The antibiotic-resistant pollution in size-segregated bioaerosols from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is of increasing concern due to its public health risks, but an elaborate review is still lacking. This work overviewed the profile, mobility, pathogenic hosts, source, and risks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in size-segregated bioaerosols from WWTPs. The dominant ARG type in size-segregated bioaerosols from WWTPs was multidrug resistance genes. Treatment units that equipped with mechanical facilities and aeration devices, such as grilles, grit chambers, biochemical reaction tanks, and sludge treatment units, were the primary sources of bioaerosol antibiotic resistome in WWTPs. Higher enrichment of antibiotic resistome in particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm, was found along the upwind-downwind-WWTPs gradient. Only a small portion of ARGs in inhalable bioaerosols from WWTPs were flanked by mobile genetic elements. The pathogens with multiple drug resistance had been found in size-segregated bioaerosols from WWTPs. Different ARGs or antibiotic resistant bacteria have different aerosolization potential associated with bioaerosols from various treatment processes. The validation of pathogenic antibiotic resistance bacteria, deeper investigation of ARG mobility, emission mechanism of antibiotic resistome, and development of treatment technologies, should be systematically considered in future.

Genetic epidemiology and plasmid-mediated transmission of mcr-1 by Escherichia coli ST155 from wastewater of long-term care facilities

Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) for older people play an important and unique role in multidrug-resistant organism transmission. Herein, we investigated the genetic characteristics of mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr-1)-carrying Escherichia coli strains isolated from wastewater of LTCFs in Shanghai. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was carried out by agar dilution methods. Whole-genome sequencing and plasmid sequencing were conducted, and resistance genes and sequence types of colistin in E. coli isolates were analyzed. Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis was performed by the Ridom SeqSphere+ software. Phylogenetic tree through the maximum likelihood method was constructed by MEGA X. Out of 306 isolates, only 1 E. coli named ECSJ33 was found, and the plasmid pECSJ33 from ECSJ33 harbored the mcr-1 gene that was located with 59,080 bp belonging to IncI2 type. The plasmid pECSJ33 was capable of conjugation with an efficiency of 2.9 × 10-2. Bioinformatic analysis indicated pECSJ33 shared backbone with the previously reported mcr-1-harboring pHNGDF93 isolated from fish source. Moreover, the cgMLST analysis revealed that ECSJ33 belongs to different lineages from those reported from previous E. coli strains but shared high similarity to NCTC11129 in cluster 11. The phylogenetic tree revealed MCR-1 of ECSJ33 in this study was mostly of animal food origin and that they were closely related. Our study firstly reports detection of genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant mcr-1-harboring E. coli ST155 from wastewater of LTCF source in China. The data may prove that the plasmid pECSJ33 belongs to food origin and help to understand the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and genomic features of colistin resistance under One Health approach.IMPORTANCEOne Escherichia coli named ECSJ33 was found from wastewater of a long-term care facility (LTCF) and the plasmid pECSJ33 from ECSJ33 harbored the mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr-1) that was located with 59,080 bp belonging to IncI2 type, which was capable of conjugation with an efficiency of 2.9 × 10-2. The microbiome, resistome, and their co-evolution in sewage at a hospital for infectious diseases in Shanghai, China

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) caused by the overuse of antibiotics severely threatens human health. Hospital sewage may be a key transmission hub for ARB. However, the complex link between the microbiome and resistomeresistance in hospital sewage remains unclear. In this study, metagenomic assembly and binning methods were used to investigate the microbial community, resistome, and association of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with ARB in sewage from 10 representative sites (outpatient building, surgery building, internal medicine buildings [IMB1-4], staff dormitory, laboratory animal building, tuberculosis building [TBB], and hospital wastewater treatment plant) of a hospital in Shanghai from June 2021 to February 2022. A total of 252 ARG subtypes, belonging to 17 antibiotic classes, were identified. The relative abundance of KPC-2 was higher at IMBs and TBB than at other sites. Of the ARG-carrying contigs, 47.3%-62.6% were associated with mobile genetic elements, and the proportion of plasmid-associated ARGs was significantly higher than that of chromosome-associated ARGs. Although a similar microbiome composition was shared, certain bacteria were enriched at different sites. Potential pathogens Enterococcus B faecium and Klebsiella pneumoniae were primarily enriched in IMB2 and IMB4, respectively. The same ARGs were identified in diverse bacterial hosts (especially pathogenic bacteria), and accordingly, the latter possessed multiple ARGs. Furthermore, gene flow was frequently observed in the sewage of different buildings. The results provide crucial information on the characterization profiles of resistomes in hospital sewage in Shanghai.IMPORTANCEEnvironmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) play a critical role in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance, which poses a global health threat. Wastewater from healthcare facilities serves as a significant reservoir for ARGs. Here, we characterized the microbial community along with the resistome (comprising all antibiotic resistance genes) in wastewater from a specialized hospital for infectious diseases in Shanghai. Potential pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus B faecium) were frequently detected in hospital wastewater and carried multiple ARGs. A complex link between microbiome and resistome was observed in the wastewater of this hospital. The monitoring of ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in hospital wastewater might be of great significance for preventing the spread of ARB.

A comprehensive review on the fate and impact of antibiotic residues in the environment and public health: A special focus on the developing countries

The widespread application of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine has led to the pervasive presence of antibiotic residues in the environment, posing a potential hazard to public health. This comprehensive review aims to scrutinize the fate and impact of antibiotic residues, with a particular focus on the context of developing nations. The investigation delves into the diverse pathways facilitating the entry of antibiotics into the environment and meticulously examines their effects on human health. The review delineates the current state of antibiotic residues, evaluates their exposure in developing nations, and elucidates existing removal methodologies. Additionally, it probes into the factors contributing to the endurance and ecotoxicity of antibiotic residues, correlating these aspects with usage rates and associated mortalities in these nations. The study also investigates removal techniques for antibiotic residues, assessing their efficiency in environmental compartments. The concurrent emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, engendered by antibiotic residues, and their adverse ecological threats underscore the necessity for enhanced regulations, vigilant surveillance programs, and the adoption of sustainable alternatives. The review underlines the pivotal role of public education and awareness campaigns in promoting responsible antibiotic use. The synthesis concludes with strategic recommendations, strengthening the imperative for further research encompassing comprehensive monitoring, ecotoxicological effects, alternative strategies, socio-economic considerations, and international collaborations, all aimed at mitigating the detrimental effects of antibiotic residues on human health and the environment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Antibiotic residues are widely distributed in different environmental compartments. Developing countries use more antibiotics than developed countries. Human and veterinary wastes are one of the most responsible sources of antibiotic pollution. Antibiotics interact with biological systems and trigger pharmacological reactions at low doses. Antibiotics can be removed using modern biological, chemical, and physical-chemical techniques.

Effects of fecal microbiota transplantation and fecal virome transplantation on LPS-induced intestinal injury in broilers

The interesting roles and efficiencies of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) have attracted considerable attention and have been gradually evidenced in specific animal models. While the growing evidence that bacteriophages play roles in FMT efficacy has attracted considerable interest. In this study, we aimed to explore the effects of FMT and fecal virome transplantation (FVT) in improving inflammatory damage and ileal microbiota disorder in broilers. A total of 224 Arbor Acres broilers were selected at 1-day-old and randomly divided into the following 4 groups, with 56 broilers in each group: the CON group (the negative control group, sterile physiological saline injection + sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution gavage), LPS group (the positive control group, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection + sterile PBS solution gavage), LPS + FMT group (LPS injection + FMT solution gavage), LPS + FVT group (LPS injection + FVT solution gavage). The results showed that: LPS injection significantly upregulated the mRNA expression levels of IFN-γ (P < 0.05) and IL-8 (P < 0.001) in ileal mucosa of broilers at 11th day of age (D11), while LPS + FMT and LPS + FVT did not; LPS injection significantly upregulated the mRNA expression of ZO-1 in ileal mucosa at D11 (P < 0.01), while LPS + FMT and LPS + FVT did not; at D11, compare to CON group, LPS injection and LPS + FMT significantly increased the relative abundance of virulence factor Rab2 interacting conserved protein A-related genes in broiler ileum contents (P < 0.05), while LPS + FVT had no significant difference with CON group (P > 0.05); at D11, LPS injection significantly downregulated the biosynthesis of antibiotics pathway (P < 0.05) in the ileal contents, while LPS + FVT did not. In conclusion, both FMT and FVT could promote the recovery of inflammation caused by LPS. Furthermore, FVT had shown less disadvantage stimulation on the broilers and could reduce the risk of transmission of pathogenic genes, compared to FMT.

Fe(IV)/Fe(V)-mediated polyferric sulfate/periodate system: A novel coagulant/oxidant strategy in promoting micropollutant abatement

Strategic modulation of the advanced oxidation processes for the selective oxidation of micropollutants has attracted accumulating attention in water decontamination. This study first reported the combination of the coagulant polyferric sulfate (PFS) and oxidant periodate (PI) to accomplish synergistic abatement of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The oxidizing performance of SMX by this system was almost unaffected by coexisting water constituents, indicating the great promise of selective oxidation. Different from the current hydroxyl radicals (•OH)-mediated coagulant/oxidant systems (e.g., PFS/H2O2 and PFS/ozone), the dominance of high-valent Fe(IV)/Fe(V) intermediates was unambiguously verified in the PFS/PI treatment. The PFS colloids before and after the oxidation were characterized and the iron speciation was analyzed. The transformation of monomeric iron configurations (Fe(a)) to oligomeric iron configurations (Fe(b)) could maintain the homeostasis of surface-bound Fe(III) and Fe(II). The interaction mechanisms included the production of reactive species and dynamic reaction equilibrium for micropollutant degradation. Finally, the transformation pathways of SMX and carbamazepine (CMZ) in the PFS/PI system were postulated. Overall, this study provided a novel coagulant/oxidant strategy to achieve selective and sustainable water purification.

Multidrug antibiotic resistance in hospital wastewater as a reflection of antibiotic prescription and infection cases

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating issue that can render illnesses more difficult to treat if effective antibiotics become resistant. Many studies have explored antibiotic resistance in bacteria (ARB) in wastewater, comparing results with clinical data to ascertain the public health risk. However, few investigations have linked the prevalence of ARB in hospital wastewater (HWW) with these outcomes. This study aimed to bridge this gap by assessing the prevalence of ARB in HWW and its receiving waters. Among the 144 isolates examined, 24 were obtained from each of the six sites (untreated wastewater, aeration tank, sedimentation tank, effluent after disinfection, upstream canal, and downstream canal). A significant portion (87.5 %) belonged to the Enterobacteriaceae family, with Klebsiella pneumoniae as the predominant species (47.9 %). The antimicrobial sensitivity testing (AST) showed that 57.6 % of the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMX), the most prevalent antibiotic used within the studied hospital. The total resistance rate before and after treatment was 27.7 % and 28.0 %, respectively, with an overall multi-drug resistance (MDR) rate of 33.3 %. The multiple antibiotic resistance index (MARI) range varied between 0.0 and 0.9. The outpatient ward's three-day mean bacterial infection cases showed a significant association (Spearman's rho = 0.98) with the MARI in the sedimentation tank. Moreover, a strong correlation (Spearman's rho = 0.88) was found between hospital effluent's MARI and the seven-day mean inpatient ward case. These findings indicate that applying wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to hospital wastewater could provide valuable insights into understanding ARB contamination across human domains and water cycles. Future studies, including more comprehensive collection data on symptomatic patients and asymptomatic carriers, will be crucial in fully unravelling the complexities between human health and environmental impacts related to AMR.

Strain-level diversity in sulfonamide biodegradation: adaptation of Paenarthrobacter to sulfonamides

The widespread occurrence of sulfonamides raises significant concerns about the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Biodegradation represents not only a resistance mechanism but also a clean-up strategy. Meanwhile, dynamic and diverse environments could influence the cellular function of individual sulfonamide-degrading strains. Here, we present Paenarthrobacter from different origins that demonstrated diverse growth patterns and sulfonamide-degrading abilities. Generally, the degradation performance was largely associated with the number of sadA gene copies and also relied on its genotype. Based on the survey of sad genes in the public database, an independent mobilization of transposon-borne genes between chromosome and plasmid was observed. Insertions of multiple sadA genes could greatly enhance sulfonamide-degrading performance. Moreover, the sad gene cluster and sadA transposable element showed phylogenetic conservation currently, being identified only in two genera of Paenarthrobacter (Micrococcaceae) and Microbacterium (Microbacteriaceae). Meanwhile, Paenarthrobacter exhibited a high capacity for genome editing to adapt to the specific environmental niche, opening up new opportunities for bioremediation applications.

Different fates of extracellular and intracellular antibiotic resistance genes in flocs, granular and biofilm nitrification systems under the stress of acetaminophen

The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including intracellular ARGs (i-ARGs) and extracellular ARGs (e-ARGs), has become a global problem that cannot be ignored. This study clarified the fates of e-ARGs and i-ARGs in floc sludge reactor (FS), granular sludge reactor (GS) and biofilm reactor (BF) under the stress of acetaminophen (APAP). The results showed that the risk of ARGs transmission, especially for e-ARGs, in FS and BF could increase with the increasing times of APAP treatment, except for that in GS. The fates of i-ARGs in three different systems were similar, which were mainly clustered as the efflux pumps mechanism. The secretion and disintegration of extracellular polymeric substances mainly affected the fates of e-ARGs. In the three systems, the complexity of network relationships between ARGs and microbial communities was FS, GS and BF. Partial least-squares path model analysis indicated that bacterial community directly contributed to the variations of e-ARGs and i-ARGs under APAP treatment in the three systems, playing a leading role. And i-ARGs and protein secondary structure showed direct effects on e-ARGs. This study indicated that e-ARGs in complex systems were more susceptible to be influenced, which should be paid more attention to prevent further propagation of ARGs.

Fate and transport modelling for evaluating antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments: Current knowledge and research priorities

Antibiotics have revolutionised medicine in the last century and enabled the prevention of bacterial infections that were previously deemed untreatable. However, in parallel, bacteria have increasingly developed resistance to antibiotics through various mechanisms. When resistant bacteria find their way into terrestrial and aquatic environments, animal and human exposures increase, e.g., via polluted soil, food, and water, and health risks multiply. Understanding the fate and transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and the transfer mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments is critical for evaluating and mitigating the risks of resistant-induced infections. The conceptual understanding of sources and pathways of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs from society to the water environments is essential for setting the scene and developing an appropriate framework for modelling. Various factors and processes associated with hydrology, ecology, and climate change can significantly affect the fate and transport of ARB and ARGs in natural environments. This article reviews current knowledge, research gaps, and priorities for developing water quality models to assess the fate and transport of ARB and ARGs. The paper also provides inputs on future research needs, especially the need for new predictive models to guide risk assessment on AR transmission and spread in aquatic environments.

Ferrocenylselenoether and its cuprous cluster modified TiO2 as visible-light photocatalyst for the synergistic transformation of N-cyclic organics and Cr(vi)

In this study, fcSe@TiO2 and [Cu2I2(fcSe)2]n@TiO2 nanosystems based on ferrocenylselenoether and its cuprous cluster were developed and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Under optimized conditions, 0.2 g L-1 catalyst, 20 mM H2O2, and initial pH 7, good synergistic visible light photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and Cr(vi) reduction were achieved, with 92.1% of tetracycline and 64.5% of Cr(vi) removal efficiency within 30 minutes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reactive species ˙OH, ˙O2-, and h+ were produced in both systems through the mutual promotion of Fenton reactions and photogenerated charge separation. The [Cu2I2(fcSe)2]n@TiO2 system additionally produced 1O2 from Cu+ and ˙O2-. The advantages of the developed nanosystems include an acidic surface microenvironment provided by Se⋯H+, resourceful product formation, tolerance of complex environments, and excellent adaptability in refractory N-cyclic organics.

A comprehensive review on the application of semiconducting materials in the degradation of effluents and water splitting

As we progress into the second section, we embark on an intricate exploration of piezoelectric and photocatalytic principles, illuminating their significance in wastewater treatment and sustainable energy production. The heart of our review is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the detrimental impacts of effluents on human health, underscoring the urgency of effective treatment methods. We dissected three key materials in the realm of piezo-photocatalysis: ZnO-based materials, BaTiO3-based materials, and bismuth-doped materials. Each material is scrutinized for its unique properties and applications in the removal of pollutants from wastewater, offering a comprehensive understanding of their potential to address this critical issue. Furthermore, our exploration extends to the realm of hydrogen production, where we discuss various types of hydrogen and the role of piezo-photocatalysis in generating clean and sustainable hydrogen. By illuminating the synergistic potential of these advanced materials and technologies, we pave the way for innovative solutions to the pressing challenges of water pollution and renewable energy production. This review article not only serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars in the fields of material science and environmental engineering but also underscores the pivotal role of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex global issues.

Recent developments on advanced oxidation processes for degradation of pollutants from wastewater with focus on antibiotics and organic dyes

The existence of various pollutants in water environment contributes to global pollution and poses significant threats to humans, wildlife, and other living beings. The emergence of an effective, realistic, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable technique to treat wastewater generated from different sectors is critical for reducing pollutant accumulation in the environment. The electrochemical advanced oxidation method is a productive technology for treating hazardous effluents because of its potential benefits such as lack of secondary pollutant and high oxidation efficiency. Recent researches on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the period of 2018-2022 are highlighted in this paper. This review emphasizes on recent advances in electro-oxidation (EO), ozone oxidation, sonolysis, radiation, electro-Fenton (EF), photolysis and photocatalysis targeted at treating pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides polluted effluents. In the first half of the review, the concept of the AOPs are discussed briefly. Later, the influence of increasing current density, pH, electrode, electrolyte and initial concentration of effluents on degradation are discussed. Lastly, previously reported designs of electrochemical reactors, as well as data on intermediates generated and energy consumption during the electro oxidation and Fenton processes are discussed. According to the literature study, the electro-oxidation technique is more appropriate for organic compounds, whilst the electro-Fenton technique appear to be more appropriate for more complex molecules.

Experimental and theoretical revealing of piezo-photocatalyst Bi2O2CO3 for degradation of ciprofloxacin in water

In this report, we have attempted to experimentally and theoretically reveal a new piezo-photocatalyst Bi2O2CO3 for efficient removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water. Bi2O2CO3 nanoplates were synthesized to evaluate their photocatalytic (irradiation source: simulated-sunlight), piezocatalytic (irradiation source: ultrasonic) and piezo-photocatalytic (irradiation source: simulated-sunlight and ultrasonic) performances for CIP elimination. Under the condition CCIP = 10 mg/L and Ccatalyst = 1 g/L, the piezo-photodegradation rate constant is obtained as kapp = 0.07811 min-1, which surpasses that of photocatalysis (kapp = 0.04686 min-1) and piezocatalysis (kapp = 0.01233 min-1); this phenomenon manifests an obvious piezo-enhanced photocatalytic behavior in terms of the "1 + 1 > 2" principle. The ultrasonic-induced piezoelectric behavior in Bi2O2CO3 nanoplates and involved piezo-photocatalytic mechanism were theoretically elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) and finite-element method (FEM) studies. Additionally, the effects of various factors on the CIP degradation, decomposition mechanism of CIP and toxicity of the decomposition intermediates were also analyzed.

Electrocatalytic Deep Dehalogenation and Mineralization of Florfenicol: Synergy of Atomic Hydrogen Reduction and Hydroxyl Radical Oxidation over Bifunctional Cathode Catalyst

It is difficult to achieve deep dehalogenation or mineralization for halogenated antibiotics using traditional reduction or oxidation processes, posing the risk of microbial activity inhibition and bacterial resistance. Herein, an efficient electrocatalytic process coupling atomic hydrogen (H*) reduction with hydroxyl radical (•OH) oxidation on a bifunctional cathode catalyst is developed for the deep dehalogenation and mineralization of florfenicol (FLO). Atomically dispersed NiFe bimetallic catalyst on nitrogen-doped carbon as a bifunctional cathode catalyst can simultaneously generate H* and •OH through H2O/H+ reduction and O2 reduction, respectively. The H* performs nucleophilic hydro-dehalogenation, and the •OH performs electrophilic oxidization of the carbon skeleton. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that reductive dehalogenation and oxidative mineralization processes can promote each other mutually, showing an effect of 1 + 1 > 2. 100% removal, 100% dechlorination, 70.8% defluorination, and 65.1% total organic carbon removal for FLO are achieved within 20 min (C0 = 20 mg·L-1, -0.5 V vs SCE, pH 7). The relative abundance of the FLO resistance gene can be significantly reduced in the subsequent biodegradation system. This study demonstrates that the synergy of reduction dehalogenation and oxidation degradation can achieve the deep removal of refractory halogenated organic contaminants.

Activation of Peracetic Acid by CoFe2O4 for Efficient Degradation of Ofloxacin: Reactive Species and Mechanism

Peroxyacetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have attracted much attention in wastewater treatment by reason of high selectivity, long half-life reactive oxygen species (ROS), and wider applicability. In this study, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) was applied to activate PAA for the removal of ofloxacin (OFX). The degradation of OFX could reach 83.0% via the CoFe2O4/PAA system under neutral conditions. The low concentration of co-existing anions and organic matter displayed negligible influence on OFX removal. The contributions of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), organic radicals (R-O·), and other reactive species to OFX degradation in CoFe2O4/PAA were systematically evaluated. Organic radicals (especially CH3C(O)OO·) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were verified to be the main reactive species leading to OFX destruction. The Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycle occurring on the surface of CoFe2O4 played a significant role in PAA activation. The catalytic performance of CoFe2O4 remained above 80% after five cycles. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity of OFX was reduced after treatment with the CoFe2O4/PAA system. This study will facilitate further research and development of the CoFe2O4/PAA system as a new strategy for wastewater treatment.

Carbon-based materials as efficient adsorbents for the removal of antibiotics: The real contributions of carbon edge sites

Disclosing the effect of edge defects in carbon-based materials on antibiotic removal remains a great challenge. In this study, carbon-based adsorbents (DC-s) with different degrees of edge defects were synthesized on a large scale via a direct calcination of sodium citrate (SC) and their adsorption performance to antibiotics were explored. The experimental results suggested that the edge defects of DC-s samples were the active sites for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) and norfloxacin (NOR). The adsorption capacity of the optimal sample DC-900 for TC and NOR was 155.8 and 168.0 mg g-1, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that zigzag edge defects rather than armchair edge defects were crucial to the excellent adsorption performance of DC-s samples for antibiotics, and the natures for the difference in the adsorption performance of the two edge defects for antibiotics were their different electronic structures. In addition, DC-900 also showed stable adsorption efficiency for antibiotics in the interferences, dynamic adsorption, and cycle experiments, suggesting its good environmental application potential. This study provides new insight into clarifying the natures of edge defects with carbon-based adsorbents for high-efficiency removal of antibiotics, which may guide the exploration of cost-effective carbon-based adsorbents.

Co-digestion of chicken manure and sewage sludge in black soldier fly larvae bioconversion system: bacterial biodiversity and nutrients quality of residues for biofertilizer application

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) bioconversion system is emerging as an effective approach for organic waste pollution treatment. Co-digestion of different organic matters with BSFL can be an effective way to realize the innovative biowaste circular economy. In this study, organic waste mixture of chicken manure and sewage sludge was chosen as substrate for BSFL growth. The bacterial biodiversity and nutrients quality of BSFL residue were evaluated through gene sequencing and other characterizations to confirm their application potential as biofertilizers. The dominant bacteria in BSFL residue were Firmicutes (75.39%) at phylum level, Bacilli (71.61%) at class level and Pseudogracilibacillus (11.08%) at genus level. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were used to assess the harmlessness of BSFL residue. After BSFL treatment, 36.2% decrease in ARGs was observed. Taking nutrients quality into consideration, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved nitrogen, available phosphorous, and available potassium significantly increased in the co-digestion system. These results demonstrated that co-digestion of chicken manure and excess sludge in BSFL bioconversion system could improve the nutrients quality of residues. However, removal of ARGs in the bioconversion process should be further explored to eliminate environmental concerns associated with application of BSFL residue as biofertilizers.

Unraveling the antibiotic resistome in backwater zones of large cascade reservoirs: Co-occurrence patterns, horizontal transfer directions and health risks

The widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) throughout aquatic environments has raised global concerns for public health. However, the profiles and patterns of antibiotic resistome in backwater zone of cascade reservoirs, where water flow is slowed down, are still poorly understood. Here, we proposed a metagenomic analysis framework to comprehensively reveal the diversity, abundance, co-occurrence patterns and transfer direction of ARGs in cascade reservoirs system and evaluated their health risks through a procedure based on contigs. A total of 364 ARGs subtypes conferring resistance to different antibiotics classes were detected in our water samples, and the dominant ARGs (macB, bacA, vanRA, bcrA) were similar in different reservoirs. Meanwhile, the distribution of ARGs was influenced by the presence of biotic factors such as metal resistant genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), as well as abiotic factors such as dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH. Remarkably, ARGs (vanR, rosB, MexT) co-occurred with plasmids and virulence factor genes (VFGs), which can lead to the emergence and spread of highly virulent and antibiotic resistant bacteria in microbial communities. Overall, this study helps administrators to better understand the complex patterns of ARGs in backwater zones of large cascade reservoirs and provides a proper procedure for detecting the presence of high-risk of ARGs.

Occurrence, Bioaccumulation, Metabolism and Ecotoxicity of Fluoroquinolones in the Aquatic Environment: A Review

In recent years, there has been growing concern about antibiotic contamination in water bodies, particularly the widespread presence of fluoroquinolones (FQs), which pose a serious threat to ecosystems due to their extensive use and the phenomenon of "pseudo-persistence". This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on FQs in water bodies, summarizing and analyzing contamination levels of FQs in global surface water over the past three years, as well as the bioaccumulation and metabolism patterns of FQs in aquatic organisms, their ecological toxicity, and the influencing factors. The results show that FQs contamination is widespread in surface water across the surveyed 32 countries, with ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin being the most heavy contaminants. Furthermore, contamination levels are generally higher in developing and developed countries. It has been observed that compound types, species, and environmental factors influence the bioaccumulation, metabolism, and toxicity of FQs in aquatic organisms. FQs tend to accumulate more in organisms with higher lipid content, and toxicity experiments have shown that FQs exhibit the highest toxicity to bacteria and the weakest toxicity to mollusk. This article summarizes and analyzes the current research status and shortcomings of FQs, providing guidance and theoretical support for future research directions.

Enhanced Oxidation of Antibiotics by Ferrate Mediated with Natural Organic Matter: Role of Phenolic Moieties

The increasing presence of antibiotics in water sources threatens public health and ecosystems. Various treatments have been previously applied to degrade antibiotics, yet their efficiency is commonly hindered by the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in water. On the contrary, we show here that nine types of NOM and NOM model compounds improved the removal of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole by ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) under mild alkaline conditions. This is probably associated with the presence of phenolic moieties in NOMs, as suggested by first-order kinetics using NOM, phenol, and hydroquinone. Electron paramagnetic resonance reveals that NOM radicals are generated within milliseconds in the Fe(VI)-NOM system via single-electron transfer from NOM to Fe(VI) with the formation of Fe(V). The dominance of the Fe(V) reaction with antibiotics resulted in their enhanced removal despite concurrent reactions between Fe(V) and NOM moieties, the radicals, and water. Kinetic modeling considering Fe(V) explains the enhanced kinetics of antibiotics abatement at low phenol concentrations. Experiments with humic and fulvic acids of lake and river waters show similar results, thus supporting the enhanced abatement of antibiotics in real water situations.

Exploring the Application Potential of Aquaculture Sewage Treatment of Pseudomonas chengduensis Strain WD211 Based on Its Complete Genome

Pseudomonas chengduensis is a new species of Pseudomonas discovered in 2014, and currently, there is a scarcity of research on this bacterium. The P. chengduensis strain WD211 was isolated from a fish pond. This study investigated the purification capability and environmental adaptability of strain WD211 in wastewater and described the basic features and functional genes of its complete genome. According to the results, the sewage treated with strain WD211 showed a decrease in concentration of 18.12% in total nitrogen, 89.39% in NH4+, 62.16% in NO3-, 79.97% in total phosphorus, and 71.41% in COD after 24 h. Strain WD211 is able to survive in a pH range of 6-11. It shows resistance to 7% sodium chloride and different types of antibiotics. Genomic analysis showed that strain WD211 may remove nitrogen and phosphorus through the metabolic pathway of nitrogen assimilation and phosphorus accumulation, and that it can promote organic decomposition through oxygenase. Strain WD211 possesses genes for producing betaine, trehalose, and sodium ion transport, which provide it with salt tolerance. It also has genes for antibiotic efflux and multiple oxidases, which give it antibiotic resistance. This study contributes to the understanding of the sewage treatment ability and potential applications of P. chengduensis.

Plastisphere characterization in habitat of the highly endangered Shinisaurus crocodilurus: Bacterial composition, assembly, function and the comparison with surrounding environment

Plastisphere is a new niche for microorganisms that complicate the ecological effects of plastics, and may profoundly influence biodiversity and habitat conservation. The DaGuishan National Nature Reserve, one of the largest habitats of the highly endangered crocodile lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus), is experiencing plastic pollution without sufficient attention. Here, plastisphere collected from captive tanks of crocodile lizards in this nature reserve was characterized for the first time. Three types of plastic (PE-PP, PE1, and PE2) together with the surrounding water and soil samples, were collected, and 16S rRNA sequencing technology was used to characterize the bacterial composition. The results demonstrated that plastisphere was driven by stochastic process and had a distinct bacterial community with higher diversity than that in surrounding water (p < 0.05). Bacteria related to nitrogen and carbon cycles (Pseudomonas psychrotolerans, Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum) were more abundant in plastisphere than in water or soil (p < 0.05). More importantly, plastics recruited pathogens and those bacteria function in antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) coding. Bacteria related to polymer degradation also proliferated in plastisphere, especially Bacillus subtilis with a fold change of 42.01. The PE2 plastisphere, which had the lowest diversity and was dominated by Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum differed from PE 1 and PE-PP plastispheres totally. Plastics' morphology and aquatic nutrient levels contributed to the heterogeneity of different plastispheres. Overall, this study demonstrated that plastispheres diversify in composition and function, affecting ecosystem services directly or indirectly. Pathogens and bacteria related to ARGs expression enriched in the plastisphere should not be ignored because they may threaten the health of crocodile lizards by increasing the risk of infection. Plastic pollution control should be included in conservation efforts for crocodile lizards. This study provides new insights into the potential impacts of plastisphere, which is important for ecological risk assessments of plastic pollution in the habitats of endangered species.

The Role of Stakeholders' Understandings in Emerging Antimicrobial Resistance: A One Health Approach

The increasing misuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine and in agroecosystems and the consequent selective pressure of resistant strains lead to multidrug resistance (AMR), an expanding global phenomenon. Indeed, this phenomenon represents a major public health target with significant clinical implications related to increased morbidity and mortality and prolonged hospital stays. The current presence of microorganisms multi-resistant to antibiotics isolated in patients is a problem because of the additional burden of disease it places on the most fragile patients and the difficulty of finding effective therapies. In recent decades, international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have played significant roles in addressing the issue of AMR. The ECDC estimates that in the European Union alone, antibiotic resistance causes 33,000 deaths and approximately 880,000 cases of disability each year. The epidemiological impact of AMR inevitably also has direct economic consequences related not only to the loss of life but also to a reduction in the number of days worked, increased use of healthcare resources for diagnostic procedures and the use of second-line antibiotics when available. In 2015, the WHO, recognising AMR as a complex problem that can only be addressed by coordinated multi-sectoral interventions, promoted the One Health approach that considers human, animal, and environmental health in an integrated manner. In this review, the authors try to address why a collaboration of all stakeholders involved in AMR growth and management is necessary in order to achieve optimal health for people, animals, plants, and the environment, highlighting that AMR is a growing threat to human and animal health, food safety and security, economic prosperity, and ecosystems worldwide.

Four antibiotics and copper interactive effects on the growth and physiological characteristics of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle

Co-pollution of antibiotics and heavy metal copper (Cu) is common in freshwater environments because of their wide use as antimicrobial agents, especially in aquaculture. However, the toxic effects of coexisting antibiotics and heavy metals on aquatic plants remain unclear. This study investigated the effect of four antibiotics (i.e., enrofloxacin, ENR; tetracycline, TC; sulfamethoxazole, SMX; erythromycin, ERY), Cu, and their mixture on the growth and physiological responses of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle. Results showed that the four antibiotics exhibited toxic effects on the growth and physiological indicators of H. verticillata, and root elongation was the most sensitive endpoint of the phytotoxicity test. The median effect concentration (EC50) of root elongation indicated that TC (EC50 = 10.05 mg/L) has the highest level of growth toxicity, and the toxicity of ENR to aquatic plants was close to TC (EC50 = 10.44 mg/L), followed by SMX (EC50 = 20.08 mg/L). However, there was no significant toxic effect of 20 mg/L ERY on the root elongation. Hydrophobicity may be a key factor affecting the phytotoxicity of antibiotics. Moreover, antagonistic toxic effects were observed under ENR + Cu, TC + Cu, SMX + Cu, and ERY + Cu co-exposures at all the experimental concentrations (0.01-20 mg/L). Due to the concentrations of antibiotics in natural waters usually with ng/L levels, our results suggested that environmental antibiotic concentrations probably pose low ecological risk to aquatic plants and indicated the H. verticillata could be used as phytoremediation candidate to remove antibiotic or antibiotic-Cu pollutions in general nature water.

Comprehensive assessment of toxicity and environmental risk associated with sulfamethoxazole biodegradation in sulfur-mediated biological wastewater treatment

Incomplete mineralization of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in wastewater treatment systems poses a threat to ecological health. The toxicity and environmental risk associated with SMX biodegradation in the sulfur-mediated biological process were examined for the first time through a long-term (180 days) bioreactor study and a series of bioassays. The results indicated that the sulfur-mediated biological system was highly resistant and tolerant to SMX toxicity, as evidenced by the enrichment of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), the improved microbial metabolic activity, and the excellent performance on pollutants removal under long-term SMX exposure. SMX can be effectively biodegraded by the cleavage and rearrangement of the isoxazole ring, hydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions in sulfur-mediated biological wastewater system. These biodegradation pathways effectively reduced the acute toxicity, antibacterial activity, and ecotoxicities of SMX and its biotransformation products (TPs) in the effluent of the sulfur-mediated biological system. The TPs produced via hydrogenation (TP1), hydroxylation, and isoxazole ring cleavage (TP3, TP4, TP5, TP8, and TP9) exhibited lower toxicity than SMX. Under SMX stress, although the abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes increased, the total abundance of ARGs decreased due to the extrusion of some intracellular SMX by the efflux pump genes and the inactivation of some SMX through the biodegradation process. Efflux pump and inactivation, as the main resistance mechanisms of antibiotics in the sulfur-mediated biological system, play a crucial role in microbial self-defense. The findings of this study demonstrate the great potential of the sulfur-mediated biological system in SMX removal, detoxication, and ARGs environmental risk reduction.

Antimicrobial resistance in southeast Asian water environments: A systematic review of current evidence and future research directions

Antimicrobial resistance has been a serious and complex issue for over a decade. Although research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has mainly focused on clinical and animal samples as essential for treatment, the AMR situation in aquatic environments may vary and have complicated patterns according to geographical area. Therefore, this study aimed to examine recent literature on the current situation and identify gaps in the AMR research on freshwater, seawater, and wastewater in Southeast Asia. The PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases were searched for relevant publications published from January 2013 to June 2023 that focused on antimicrobial resistance bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) among water sources. Based on the inclusion criteria, the final screening included 41 studies, with acceptable agreement assessed using Cohen's inter-examiner kappa equal to 0.866. This review found that 23 out of 41 included studies investigated ARGs and ARB reservoirs in freshwater rather than in seawater and wastewater, and it frequently found that Escherichia coli was a predominant indicator in AMR detection conducted by both phenotypic and genotypic methods. Different ARGs, such as blaTEM, sul1, and tetA genes, were found to be at a high prevalence in wastewater, freshwater, and seawater. Existing evidence highlights the importance of wastewater management and constant water monitoring in preventing AMR dissemination and strengthening effective mitigation strategies. This review may be beneficial for updating current evidence and providing a framework for spreading ARB and ARGs, particularly region-specific water sources. Future AMR research should include samples from various water systems, such as drinking water or seawater, to generate contextually appropriate results. Robust evidence regarding standard detection methods is required for prospective-era work to raise practical policies and alerts for developing microbial source tracking and identifying sources of contamination-specific indicators in aquatic environment markers.

Wastewater treatment plant effluents exert different impacts on antibiotic resistome in water and sediment of the receiving river: Metagenomic analysis and risk assessment

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered as hotspots for the spread of antibiotic resistome into the environment. However, the differential contributions of WWTPs to the antibiotic resistome in the receiving river water and sediment are poorly understood. Here, based on metagenomic analysis, we found that the WWTP effluents significantly elevated the diversities and abundances of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the receiving river water from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, but showed less interference with the antibiotic resistome in sediment. Estimated by SourceTracker, WWTPs contributed 60.691.8% of ARGs in downstream river water, much higher than those for sediment (7.7568.0%). A holistic comparison of ARG risks based on analysis of ARG combination, mobility risk, ARG hosts and ARG-carrying pathogens further revealed the great impacts of WWTP effluents on downstream river water rather than sediment. Among various MGEs, tnpA exhibited the greatest potential for the dissemination of ARGs, and displayed highest co-occurrence frequency with multiple ARGs. P. aeruginosa, E. cloacae, and E. coli were identified as the critical-priority pathogens of ARG hosts. This study demonstrated the much greater impacts of WWTP effluents on the downstream water compared with sediment, which is significant for developing effective strategies to mitigate ARG risks.

Karst spring microbiome: Diversity, core taxa, and community response to pathogens and antibiotic resistance gene contamination

Karst aquifers are important water resources for drinking water supplies worldwide. Although they are susceptible to anthropogenic contamination due to their high permeability, there is a lack of detailed knowledge on the stable core microbiome and how contamination may affect these communities. In this study, eight karst springs (distributed across three different regions in Romania) were sampled seasonally for one year. The core microbiota was analysed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. To identify bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, an innovative method was applied, consisting of high-throughput antibiotic resistance gene quantification performed on potential pathogen colonies cultivated on Compact Dry™ plates. A taxonomically stable bacterial community consisting of Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, and Actinomycetota was revealed. Core analysis reaffirmed these results and revealed primarily freshwater-dwelling, psychrophilic/psychrotolerant species affiliated to Rhodoferax, Flavobacterium, and Pseudomonas genera. Both sequencing and cultivation methods indicated that more than half of the springs were contaminated with faecal bacteria and pathogens. These samples contained high levels of sulfonamide, macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramins B, and trimethoprim resistance genes spread primarily by transposase and insertion sequences. Differential abundance analysis found Synergistota, Mycoplasmatota, and Chlamydiota as suitable candidates for pollution monitoring in karst springs. This is the first study highlighting the applicability of a combined approach based on high-throughput SmartChip™ antibiotic resistance gene quantification and Compact Dry™ pathogen cultivation for estimating microbial contaminants in karst springs and other challenging low biomass environments.

Comprehensive overview of antibiotic distribution, risk and priority: A study of large-scale drinking water sources from the lower Yangtze River

Antibiotics have attracted widespread attention around the world because they are ubiquitous in the environment and can lead to antibiotic-resistant microbes developing and pose ecotoxicological risks. In this study, we determined the spatiotemporal distributions of 39 antibiotics in 19 drinking water sources in Jiangsu area of the lower Yangtze River and attempted to identify the sources of the antibiotics and to prioritize the antibiotics. The total antibiotic concentrations in spring and fall were 234.56-6515.99 and 151.12-2562.59 ng/L, respectively. In spring, the total antibiotic concentration gradually increased from upstream to downstream. In fall, the antibiotic concentration did not markedly vary upstream to downstream (total concentrations 151.12-432.17 ng/L) excluding site S9 and S10. Analysis using a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that the antibiotics had four main sources. Pharmaceutical wastewater was the main source, contributing 34.1% and 41.2% of total antibiotics in spring and fall, respectively, and domestic wastewater was the second most important source, contributing 24.4% and 43% of total antibiotics in spring and fall, respectively. Pharmaceutical wastewater was the main source from midstream to downstream, but the other sources made different contributions in different areas because of the various ranges of human activities. An ecological risk assessment was performed. Stronger risks were posed by antibiotics in spring than fall, and fluoroquinolone antibiotics posed the strongest risks. Optimized risk quotients indicated that norfloxacin was a high-risk contaminant. An assessment of the risk of resistance development indicated that norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin posed moderate to high risks of resistance development and should be prioritized for risk management. The results of this study are important reference data for identifying key sources of antibiotics and developing strategies to manage antibiotic contamination in similar areas.

Amoxicillin degradation and high-value extracellular polymer recovery by algal-bacterial symbiosis systems

Algal-bacterial symbiosis systems have emerged as sustainable methods for the treatment of new pollutants and the recovery of resources. However, the bio-refinery of biomass derived from microalgae is inefficient and expensive. In order to simultaneously degrade antibiotic and recover resources efficiently, two algal-bacterial symbiosis systems were constructed using Pseudomonas aeruginosa (alginate overproduction) and Bacillus subtilis (poly-γ-glutamic acid overproduction) with amoxicillin-degrading-microalga Prototheca zopfii W1. The optimal conditions for W1 to degrade amoxicillin are 35 °C, pH 7, and 180 rpm. In the presence of 5-50 mg/L of amoxicillin, W1-P. aeruginosa and W1-B. subtilis exhibit higher amoxicillin degradation and produce more extracellular polymers than W1 or bacteria alone. The metabolomic analysis demonstrates that the algal-bacterial symbiosis enhances the tolerance of W1 to amoxicillin by altering carbohydrate metabolism and promotes the production of biopolymers by upregulating the precursors synthesis. Moreover, the removal of amoxicillin (10 mg/L) from livestock effluent by W1-P. aeruginosa and W1-B. subtilis is greater than 90 % in 3 days, and the maximum yields of alginate and poly-γ-glutamate are 446.1 and 254.3 mg/g dry cell weight, respectively. These outcomes provide theoretical support for the application of algal-bacterial symbiosis systems to treatment of amoxicillin wastewater and efficient production of biopolymers.

Landscape of antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial communities in groundwater on the Tibetan Plateau, and distinguishing their difference with low-altitude counterparts

Groundwater is a vital source of drinking water for Tibetans. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and bacterial communities in groundwater on the Tibetan Plateau remain unclear. Furthermore, the characterization of their differences between high-altitude and low-altitude groundwater is still unrevealed. Herein, 32 groundwater samples were collected on the plateau, and intra- and extracellular ARGs (iARGs and eARGs), and bacterial communities were characterised through qPCR assays to 19 ARGs and 16S rRNA sequencing. It showed top four abundant intra- and extracellular last-resort ARGs (LARGs) were blaOXA-48, mcr-1, vanA, and vanB, whereas dominant common ARGs (CARGs) were tetA and ermB, respectively. CARGs had higher abundances than LARGs, and iARGs were more frequently detected than eARGs. Proteobacteria, an invasive resident phylum, and Firmicutes dominated eDNA release. Network analysis revealed all observed LARGs co-occurred with pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. Community diversity was significantly associated with longitude and elevation, while nitrate correlated with ARGs. Comparative analysis demonstrated eARG frequencies and abundances were higher at high altitudes than at low altitudes. Additionally, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas specifically dominated at high altitudes. This study reveals the widespread prevalence of ARGs, particularly LARGs, in groundwater on the less-disturbed Tibetan Plateau and underlines the potential risks associated with the LARG-carrying bacteria. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which are defined as emerging environmental contaminants, are becoming a global concern due to their ability to confer antibiotic resistance to pathogens. Our findings highlight the prevalence of ARGs, particularly LARGs, in groundwater on the Tibetan Plateau, and the possibility that naturally-occurring pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria carry multiple LARGs. In addition, we further reveal differences in the distribution of ARGs and bacterial community between high-altitude and low-altitude groundwater. Collectively, our findings offer an important insight into the potential public risks related to groundwater on the Tibetan Plateau.

Unraveling antibiotic resistomes associated with bacterial and viral communities in intertidal mudflat aquaculture area

The extensive use of antibiotics in intertidal mudflat aquaculture area has substantially increased the dissemination risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). As hosts of ARGs, bacteria and virus exert vital effects on ARG dissemination. However, the insights for the interrelationships among ARGs, bacteria, and virus have not been thoroughly explored in intertidal mudflat. Therefore, this study attempts to unravel the occurrence, dissemination, evolution, and driving mechanisms of ARGs associated with bacterial and viral communities using metagenomic sequencing in a typical intertidal mudflat. Abundant and diverse ARGs (22 types and 437 subtypes) were identified and those of ARGs were higher in spring than in autumn. It is worthy noted that virus occupied a more essential position than bacteria for ARGs dissemination through network analysis. Meanwhile, nitrogen exerted indirect effect on ARG profiles by shaping viral and bacterial diversity. According to the results of neutral and null models, deterministic processes dominated the ARG community assembly by controlling sediment nitrogen and antibiotics. Homogeneous and variable selection dominated phylogenetic turnover of ARG community, contributing 46.15% and 45.90% of the total processes, respectively. This study can hence theoretically support for the ARG pollution control and management in intertidal mudflat aquaculture area.
