Abstract
PURPOSE Fatigue is one of the most common and distressing symptoms experienced by cancer survivors. Understanding fatigue trajectories from pre- to post-diagnosis could inform fatigue prevention and management strategies. METHODS We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (SEER-MHOS) linked data resource to characterize fatigue trajectories and their predictors 1214 older adult survivors of breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer. Fatigue was measured prior to the cancer diagnosis (T0) and at two timepoints after diagnosis (T1: mean = 20 months and T2: mean = 39 months post-diagnosis). Latent growth curve modeling and mixed effects models for repeated measurements were used to investigate fatigue experiences before and after a cancer diagnosis. RESULTS Overall, mean fatigue T-scores declined (T0 = 50, T1 = 46, and T2 = 45) indicating worsening fatigue over time. Four latent trajectory subgroups were identified: severe fatigue worsening over time (8.2% of sample), severe fatigue persisting over time (14.4%), no fatigue pre-diagnosis and mild fatigue post-diagnosis (44.4%), and not fatigued (33%). Age, cancer stage, comorbidities, and depressed mood predicted membership in the two trajectory groups experiencing severe fatigue that persisted or that worsened post-diagnosis. Older age, advanced cancer stage at diagnosis, and depressed mood were significantly associated with worsening fatigue from T1 to T2 (all p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Evaluating cancer patients for depressive symptoms and considering prior fatigue levels, age, comorbid conditions, and cancer stage may help providers anticipate fatigue trajectories and implement pre-emptive strategies to lessen fatigue impact.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to identify the effects of different training methods in women who have survived breast cancer (WSBC). Data Sources: Studies were identified by searching SportDiscus, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, and Bireme. Study Selection: The inclusion criteria were articles that addressed only breast cancer in women, were randomized clinical trials, and interventions involving physical training with Consort ≥80. Data Extraction: The PICO and CONSORT strategies were used for the selection of articles and quality assessment of randomized clinical trials, respectively. Two independent reviewers searched for articles among the databases. Disagreements were discussed, and in the case of an impasse, a third reviewer was consulted. Data Synthesis: Evidence that demonstrated the beneficial effects of physical exercise programs carried out by WSBC. Moderate or high-intensity exercise sessions have been shown to benefit women survivors of breast cancer. Among the modalities, the resistance exercise showed effects from 55% of one-repetition maximum (1 RM), exclusively or associated with other training regimes, such as aerobic (from 48% of heart rate), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or impact. The main benefits include increased muscle strength, promoted by the practice of resistance exercise in combination with other types of exercises or alone; decreased fatigue; improved quality of life; improved psychosocial effects, and increased leisure time. Conclusions: Physical training performed at a moderate or high intensity (aerobic or anaerobic) can reduce fatigue, improve quality of life, improve sleep quality, and increase bone mineral density in women survivors of breast cancer.

Abstract
Objective Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is highly prevalent among cancer survivors, which may have long-term effects on physical activity and quality of life. CRF is assessed by self-report or clinical observation, which may limit timely diagnosis and management. In this study, we examined the effect of CRF on mobility performance measured by a wearable pendant sensor. Methods This is a secondary analysis of a clinical trial evaluating the benefit of exercise in cancer survivors with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). CRF status was classified based on a Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) score ≤ 33. Among 28 patients (age = 65.7±9.8 years old, BMI = 26.9±4.1kg/m2, sex = 32.9%female) with database variables of interest, twenty-one subjects (75.9%) were classified as non-CRF. Mobility performance, including behavior (sedentary, light, and moderate to vigorous activity (MtV)), postures (sitting, standing, lying, and walking), and locomotion (e.g., steps, postural transitions) were measured using a validated pendant-sensor over 24-hours. Baseline psychosocial, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–General (FACT-G), Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I), and motor-capacity assessments including gait (habitual speed, fast speed, and dual-task speed) and static balance were also performed. Results Both groups had similar baseline clinical and psychosocial characteristics, except for body-mass index (BMI), FACT-G, FACIT-F, and FES-I (p<0.050). The groups did not differ on motor-capacity. However, the majority of mobility performance parameters were different between groups with large to very large effect size, Cohen’s d ranging from 0.91 to 1.59. Among assessed mobility performance, the largest effect sizes were observed for sedentary-behavior (d = 1.59, p = 0.006), light-activity (d = 1.48, p = 0.009), and duration of sitting+lying (d = 1.46, p = 0.016). The largest correlations between mobility performance and FACIT-F were observed for sitting+lying (rho = -0.67, p<0.001) and the number of steps per day (rho = 0.60, p = 0.001). Conclusion The results of this study suggest that sensor-based mobility performance monitoring could be considered as a potential digital biomarker for CRF assessment. Future studies warrant evaluating utilization of mobility performance to track changes in CRF over time, response to CRF-related interventions, and earlier detection of CRF.

Abstract
Background Fatigue is a subjective and distressing symptom in cancer patients and has profound effects on daily life. The rates of fatigue during treatment are reported to be 25-90%. Its causes are secondary to their treatment course, cancer itself and associated factors. Purpose To assess the prevalence of fatigue and associated factors among cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2019. Patients and Methods A cross-sectional study design was conducted on cancer patients undergoing treatment in Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. A sample of 278 was selected using systematic random sampling technique and Brief Fatigue Inventory questionnaire was used for data collection. The data were entered into EPI data version 3.1 and transferred to SPSS version 24 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were conducted to summarize the data. The significant statistical test was determined at 95% confidence interval and at p<0.05. Results The mean age of the participants was 44.9 ± 14 years. The prevalence of fatigue identified by this study was 208 (74.8%). Age, stage of cancer, presence of infection, type of cancer, and type of treatment had shown a significant association with fatigue [AOR = 3.15, 95% CI: (1.35-7.34)], [AOR = 0.02, 95% CI: (0.003-0.172)], [AOR = 4.15, 95% CI: (1.06-16.07)], [AOR = 5.19, 95% CI: (1.59-16.90)], [AOR = 0.18, 95% CI: (0.07-0.462)] respectively. Conclusion The prevalence of fatigue in cancer patients in this study was high. Risk factors were age of the patients, stage of cancer, presence of infection, cervical cancer and radiation therapy.

Abstract
The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) have been previously implicated in the pathophysiology of skeletal muscle dysfunction in women with breast cancer (BC) and animal models of BC. This study investigated alterations induced in skeletal muscle by BC-derived factors in an in vitro conditioned media (CM) system and tested the hypothesis that BC cells secrete a factor that represses PPAR-γ (PPARG) expression and its transcriptional activity, leading to downregulation of PPARG target genes involved in mitochondrial function and other metabolic pathways. We found that BC-derived factors repress PPAR-mediated transcriptional activity without altering protein expression of PPARG. Furthermore, we show that BC-derived factors induce significant alterations in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and lipid accumulation, which are rescued with exogenous expression of PPARG. The PPARG agonist drug rosiglitazone was able to rescue BC-induced lipid accumulation but did not rescue effects of BC-derived factors on PPAR-mediated transcription or mitochondrial function. These data suggest that BC-derived factors alter lipid accumulation and mitochondrial function via different mechanisms that are both related to PPARG signaling, with mitochondrial dysfunction likely being altered via repression of PPAR-mediated transcription, and lipid accumulation being altered via transcription-independent functions of PPARG.

Abstract
CONTEXT Fatigue is a particularly common and troubling symptom that has a negative impact on quality of life throughout all phases of treatment and stages of the illness among patients with cancer. OBJECTIVES The objective of this meta-analysis is to examine the present status of fatigue prevalence in patients with cancer. METHODS The following databases were searched: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, from inception up to February 2020. Prevalence rates were pooled with meta-analysis using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was tested using I-squared (I2) statistics. RESULTS A total of 129 studies (N = 71,568) published between 1993 and 2020 met the inclusion criteria. The overall prevalence of fatigue was 49% (34,947 of 71,656 participants, 95% CI = 45-53) with significant heterogeneity between studies (P < 0.000; τ2 = 0.0000; I2 = 98.88%). Subgroup analyses show that the prevalence of fatigue related to type of cancer ranged from 26.2% in patients with gynecological cancer to 56.3% in studies that included mixed types of cancer. In advanced cancer stage patients, the highest prevalence of fatigue (60.6%) was reported. Fatigue prevalence rates were 62% during treatment and 51% during mixed treatment status. The prevalence of fatigue decreased from 64% in studies published from 1996 to 2000 to 43% in studies published from 2016 to 2020. Metaregression identified female gender as a significant moderator for higher prevalence of fatigue, whereas mean age is not associated with fatigue. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis highlights the importance of developing optimal monitoring strategies to reduce fatigue and improve the quality of life of patients with cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To describe the occurrence of oral mucositis (OM) in women undergoing cancer treatment for breast cancer (BC). Methods: This is a retrospective, quantitative, and analytical study in medical records of women diagnosed with BC in an oncology service. Clinical data were collected regarding the occurrence and severity of OM according to the World Health Organization criteria and the cancer treatment experienced by the participants. Results: 196 women were included. Of these, 97 (49.5%) developed OM, 43.4% of which were grade 1 or 2 (low or moderate). The occurrence was higher in white women (OR 1.93; 95% CI 1.04 - 3.57; p = 0.035), with metastatic breast cancer (OR 5.46; 95% CI 1.79 - 16.64; p = 0.002) and who experienced taxane agents at some point during chemotherapy (OR 2.26; 95% CI 1.12 - 4.56; p = 0.02). The mean severity of OM in the entire sample was 0.8 ± 1.0, and in the affected women was 1.7 ± 0.7. The difference in the severity of OM by the variables was observed only among women with grade 2 and grade 3 fatigue (p = 0.03). Conclusions: OM is a common mucocutaneous toxicity in women with BC. Despite the low severity observed, care for women with BC undergoing cancer treatment must consider the possible risks and complications associated with OM, adopting strategies to prevent, monitor, and treat them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom during and after cancer treatment that negatively affects the patient's quality of life. Exercise is one of the most effective non-pharmacological treatments for CRF. Multimodal exercise therapy programs that include hypopressive exercises, relaxation and myofascial release may be beneficial for CRF. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a multimodal program on CRF and lower limb functional strength in postmenopausal women diagnosed with cancer. METHODS 7 postmenopausal women (age = 55.28 years; BMI = 26.05 kg/m2) who had a cancer diagnosis participated in a supervised and progressive 55-min class once per week for 12-weeks. CRF was measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Cancer Related Fatigue 12 and lower limb strength was assessed with the sit and stand test. RESULTS No adverse events were reported during the training period and all participants completed the exercise protocol. There was a significant increase (p = 0.01) in lower limb functional strength (pre: 19.60 (SD = 2.19) vs post: 24.60(SD = 2.19)) with an effect size of d = 2.28 and a decrease in CRF (p = 0.245) (pre: 29.36 ± 24.42; post: 17.85 ± 14.23) with a trivial effect size (d < 0.5). CONCLUSIONS These preliminary findings indicate that a supervised once per week multimodal program that includes hypopressive exercises for postmenopausal cancer survivors increased lower limb functional strength without exacerbating their CRF. These findings support further randomized trials of hypopressive training programs on patients with cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common side effect of cancer treatment, particularly in breast cancer patients. Over the past decade, the multimodal management of breast cancer has undergone several changes, such as the establishment of postoperative hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) as a new standard protocol and the reduced use of chemotherapy. The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of these changes on quality of life (QoL) and CRF. METHODS A total of 66 patients was assessed for QoL and CRF using the FACIT‑F questionnaire. Patients were asked to complete the paper-based questionnaire before (TP1) and at the end of radiotherapy (TP2) as well as at follow-up (TP3). Subgroups were compared based on fractionation and previous application of chemotherapy. RESULTS For the entire cohort, no significant changes in the severity of fatigue were seen. A mild decrease of physical wellbeing (PWB) from TP1 to TP2 was observed (22.2 vs. 20.7, p = 0.007). Fatigue at TP1 was more severe in patients receiving chemotherapy before RT (37.9 vs. 30.5, p = 0.041). Only patients without preceding chemotherapy showed a significant worsening of fatigue from TP1 to TP2 (37.9 vs 34.8, p = 0.005). The same is true for physical wellbeing (PWB), with a decrease from TP1 to TP2 in chemotherapy-naïve patients only (23.5 vs. 21.4, p = 0.002). Fractionation did not impact any of the investigated endpoints. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing postoperative RT for breast cancer constitute a heterogeneous patient population with varying risks of developing CRF influenced by previous treatments. Therefore, patient selection seems to be critical when interventional studies addressing CRF during radiotherapy are designed.

Abstract
Background: Fatigue is one of the major health conditions induced by excessive stress or abnormal immune function or defective antioxidant systems. Placental extract has been reported to have various effects such as immune modulation and cellular regeneration. Fermented porcine placenta (FPP) is a safe nontoxic material, which is highly valuable as a functional food. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-fatigue effects of FPP supplementation compared with a placebo product. Methods: In this double-blind, parallel, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial 84 healthy males and females, aged between 30 and 60 years were randomized to 320 mg of FPP once daily or placebo. The main outcome measures included efficacy of fatigue-inducing treadmill exercise on physical fatigue and fatigue-related parameters based on the questionnaire administered. Results: The IL-1β mRNA expression and fatigue severity scale were changed significantly after 8 weeks of treatment with fermented porcine placenta compared with placebo (p < 0.05). Cortisol levels were significantly improved in participants younger than 45 years following treatment with FPP compared with placebo. Furthermore, the lactate and myoglobin levels were improved significantly in participants with BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2 (p = 0.045 and p = 0.011, respectively) following treatment with FPP versus placebo. Conclusions: Our study showed that FPP supplementation significantly ameliorated fatigue-related parameters and subjective symptoms in healthy adults. Therefore, our results indicate that FPP supplementation induced anti-fatigue effect by regulating the inflammatory response.

Abstract
Background This study explored how patients with metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) experience the psychosocial challenges associated with their disease and its treatment, as well as how that experience influenced their practical, relational, vocational, and existential life. Methods This qualitative study has an explorative design and applied a phenomenological and hermeneutical approach. We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with 20 patients with metastatic GIST in long-term clinical remission. The gathered data were interpreted using a thematic analysis. Results Living with metastatic GIST, as well as the side effects of the required medication, led to changes that limited the participants' daily life. They expressed how tiredness, impaired memory, and physical challenges were among the detrimental impacts of the disease on their family life, vocational life, social life, and leisure time. Adjustments were necessary to ensure they had sufficient energy to cope with the practical and relational aspects of everyday life. Feelings of uncertainty stemming from drug resistance, disease progression, and the possibility of early death were also experienced as challenging. Half the participants stated that it was difficult to keep negative mental health issues at bay, and all of them considered the time spent waiting for their scheduled follow-up scan to be burdensome. Conclusions It is important to focus increased attention on how the daily practical and psychosocial life of patients with chronic cancer, including metastatic GIST, is affected by their disease. Doing so might provide health-care workers with clues regarding how best to guide and support such patients throughout their emotional journey and, therefore, to improve their quality of life. As new medical treatments can also prolong survival and induce long-term clinical remission in relation to several other forms of metastatic cancer, the findings concerning GIST reported in this study might have widespread implications.

Abstract
Chronic fatigue is the most common and severe symptom in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and has a strong negative association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Despite anemia being the most common objective manifestation of MDS, and the associated link between anemia and fatigue, evidence on treatments which temporarily mitigate anemia is equivocal regarding the effects on fatigue. Furthermore, previous work has found weak associations between anemia and chronic fatigue in MDS. As such, given that improving HRQoL is one of the primary treatment aims in MDS, further work is required to identify other potential contributors to chronic fatigue in these patients. In addition to anemia, MDS is associated with numerous other deviations in physiological homeostasis and has negative psychological consequences with links to chronic fatigue. Accordingly, the present review provides several potential aetiologic agents relevant to chronic fatigue in MDS which can be used to guide future research in this field.

Abstract
Increased susceptibility to fatigue is a negative predictor of survival commonly experienced by women with breast cancer (BC). Here, we sought to identify molecular changes induced in human skeletal muscle by BC regardless of treatment history or tumor molecular subtype using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and proteomic analyses. Mitochondrial dysfunction was apparent across all molecular subtypes, with the greatest degree of transcriptomic changes occurring in women with HER2/neu-overexpressing tumors, though muscle from patients of all subtypes exhibited similar pathway-level dysregulation. Interestingly, we found no relationship between anticancer treatments and muscle gene expression, suggesting that fatigue is a product of BC per se rather than clinical history. In vitro and in vivo experimentation confirmed the ability of BC cells to alter mitochondrial function and ATP content in muscle. These data suggest that interventions supporting muscle in the presence of BC-induced mitochondrial dysfunction may alleviate fatigue and improve the lives of women with BC.

Feasibility and safety of 1.5 T MR-guided and daily adapted abdominal-pelvic SBRT for elderly cancer patients: geriatric assessment tools and preliminary patient-reported outcomes. Abstract
BACKGROUND We present preliminary data of the first older cancer patients treated with Hybrid Linac for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) consisting of 1.5 T MRI-guided and daily-adapted treatment. The aim was to assess feasibility, safety and the role of G8 and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) questionnaires in predicting patients' QoL, evaluated by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). METHODS Two groups of patients with localized prostate cancer or abdominal-pelvic oligometastases were analyzed. SBRT schedule consisted of 35 Gy delivered in 5 fractions. The primary endpoint was to measure the impact of G8 and CCI on PROMs. Both G8 and the CCI were performed at baseline, while the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) for PROMs assessment was prospectively performed at baseline and after SBRT. RESULTS Forty older patients were analyzed. The median age was 73 years (range 65-85). For the entire population, the median G8 score was 15 (10-17) and the median CCI score was 6 (4-11). Concerning the PROMS, the EORTC-QLQ C30 questionnaire reported no difference between the pre- and post-SBRT evaluation in all patients, except for the fatigue item that declined after SBRT, especially in the group of patients with a G8 score < 15 and with age < 75 years (p = 0.049). No grade 3 or higher acute toxicity occurred. CONCLUSION This is the first report documenting for older cancer patients that 1.5 T MRI-guided daily-adapted SBRT is feasible, safe and does not impact on the QoL at the end of treatment. Longer follow-up is advocated to report long-term outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION Date of approval April 2019 and numbered MRI/LINAC no. 23748.

Abstract
This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study aimed to investigate the effect of strength training (ST) combined with vitamin C and E supplementation on perceived and performance fatigability in breast cancer survivors (BCS). Twenty-five BCS were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: vitamins (VIT; n = 12; 51.0 ± 9.0 years) or placebo (PLA; n = 13; 48.2 ± 8.3 years). Both groups performed a 10-week ST protocol, twice a week. The VIT group was supplemented with vitamins C (500 mg/day) and E (180 mg/day) and the PLA group with polydextrose (1 g/day), once a day after breakfast. At the beginning and at the end of the training period, perceived fatigability was assessed using Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI)-20 (general fatigue and physical fatigue). Performance fatigability was assessed during 30 maximal isokinetic knee extensions at 120°/s. General fatigue decreased similarly in the VIT (p = 0.004) and PLA (p = 0.011) groups. Physical fatigue decreased similarly in the VIT (p = 0.011) and PLA (p = 0.001) groups. Performance fatigability also decreased similarly in the VIT (p = 0.026) and PLA (p < 0.001) groups. There was no difference between groups at any moment (p > 0.05). In summary, antioxidant supplementation does not add any positive synergistic effect to ST in terms of improving perceived or performance fatigability in BCS. This clinical trial is registered in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry, number RBR-843pth (UTN no.: U1111-1222-6511). Novelty ST with maximal repetitions reduces perceived and performance fatigability of BCS. Vitamins C and E supplementation does not add any positive synergistic effect to ST in terms of reducing fatigability in BCS.

Immediate post-treatment supportive care needs of patients newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Support Care Cancer 2020; 28:5557-5567. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed at identifying supportive care needs of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC-P) immediately post-treatment, finding early predictors of unmet needs, and contrasting how immediate post-treatment needs differed from needs in longer-term survivorship. METHODS Prospective longitudinal study of 223 consecutive adults (313 approached; 72% participation) newly diagnosed with a first occurrence of primary HNC. Patients completed the Supportive Care Needs Survey-Short Form (SCNS), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, and other outcomes. Medical chart reviews were conducted. RESULTS A total of 68% of patients (n = 145/223) completed the SCNS. The multiple linear regression indicated that when controlled for medical variables, patients presented higher levels of unmet needs when they presented with higher level of anxiety upon HNC diagnosis (p = 0.03), higher neuroticism (p = 0.03), and more stressful life events in the year pre-diagnosis (p = 0.01). Patients immediately post-treatment had a wider variety of unmet needs compared with those in extended survivorship, with psychological unmet needs most prevalent at both time points. Immediately post-treatment, patients needed more support regarding pain (p = 0.04) and worries about treatment results (p = 0.05), whereas patients in longer-term survivorship needed more support regarding anxiety (p = 0.02), changes in sexual relationships (p = 0.04), and fear of death and dying (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION This study identifies areas needing further development to improve quality of care for HNC-P in the immediate post-treatment period, as well as early determinants of unmet needs. HNC clinics may want to routinely screen for anxiety, neuroticism, and burden from other life events, to pro-actively address needs upon treatment completion and alleviate disease burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom and has a negative impact on prognosis in cancer patients. CRF could be improved by Korean red ginseng (KRG). PATIENTS AND METHODS For this randomised and double-blinded trial, colorectal cancer patients who received mFOLFOX-6 were randomly assigned to either KRG 2000 mg/day (n = 219) or placebo (n = 219) for 16 weeks. CRF was evaluated using the mean area under the curve (AUC) change from baseline of brief fatigue inventory (BFI) as the primary endpoint. Fatigue-related quality of life, stress, and adverse events were evaluated as secondary endpoints. RESULTS In the full analysis group, KRG up to 16 weeks improved CRF by the mean AUC change from baseline of BFI compared to placebo, particularly in "Mood" and "Walking ability" (P = 0.038, P = 0.023, respectively). In the per-protocol group, KRG led to improved CRF in the global BFI score compared with the placebo (P = 0.019). Specifically, there were improvements in "Fatigue right now," "Mood," "Relations with others," "Walking ability," and "Enjoyment of life" at 16 weeks (P = 0.045, P = 0.006, P = 0.028, P = 0.003, P = 0.036, respectively). In subgroups of female patients, ≥60 years old, with high compliance (≥80%) or more baseline fatigue, the beneficial effects of KRG were more enhanced than that of placebo. Although neutropenia was more frequent in KRG than placebo, the incidence of all adverse events was similar. CONCLUSIONS KRG could be safely combined with mFOLFOX-6 chemotherapy in colorectal cancer patients, and reduced CRF compared with placebo.

MATERIALS AND METHODS In this double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial, a total of 30 eligible cancer patients suffering from fatigue were randomly divided into two groups (15 patients in each group). Bupropion was administered 75 mg/day for the first three days and 150 mg/day (divided in two doses) till the end of the study at week 6. Fatigue as the primary outcome was measured by BFI (Brief Fatigue Inventory) and FACIT-Fatigue (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy) scales. Secondary outcomes included HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and performance status (PS) measured by Karnofsky and ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) scales. Assessments were done at baseline, end of the second and sixth week. RESULTS There was no significant difference between placebo and bupropion at baseline and the end of second week. Significant difference was seen between two groups at the end of week six (P = 0.006 based on BFI) in favor of bupropion. In-group assessment showed improvement in fatigue levels in both groups during study time (P = 0.000 based on BFI for both bupropion and placebo). Secondary outcomes (e.g., HADS and PS) were not different at baseline and the end of second week. However, at the end of week six, the difference was significant in favor of bupropion. CONCLUSION A six-week trial of bupropion reduces the CRF and improves the PS of cancer patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION Current Controlled Trials IRCT20090613002027N12, registration date: 2018-06-01.

Abstract
Background To report on our experience using a simple optional form to facilitate communication on late effects between the patients and the oncologists during outpatient follow-up and to detail on the spectrum of challenges reported by sarcoma survivors. Methods The form was presented for the patients to complete before their consultation and covered topics related to late effects and unmet needs that the patient wished to discuss with the medical personnel. Logistic regression analysis examined how the distribution of the topics varied with age, gender, diagnosis and type of treatment received. Results The form was manageable in a busy outpatient clinic. Of the 265 patients that received the form, 236 (89%) returned it. Patients in a palliative setting and those with other diagnosis than bone sarcoma (BS) and soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) were excluded for subsequent analyses. The final study-cohort comprised 160 patients, 54 (34%) with BS and 106 (66%) with STS. Among these, 140 (88%) had late-effect topics they wanted to discuss with their oncologist. Fatigue was raised by 39% of the patients, pain by 29% and impaired mobility by 23%. BS patients raised fatigue more often (P < 0.005) than those with STS. Patients who had undergone multimodal treatment with chemotherapy raised fatigue more frequently (P < 0.001) than those who had only undergone surgery, radiotherapy or both. Conclusions A simple form on the long-term consequences of sarcoma treatment achieved a high response rate, was feasible to use in an outpatient clinic and facilitated communication on these issues. Fatigue was the most frequent topic raised and it was raised significantly more often in patients who had undergone chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is considered to be one of the most common symptoms reported by cancer patients. However, little information is available regarding the variables associated with CRF among Jordanian patients. AIMS To assess the prevalence of CRF and explore its predictors among Jordanian patients. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was used. FINDINGS Of the 240 patients surveyed, 210 (87.5%) had fatigue at the time of the survey. The total mean fatigue score was 6.2 (SD=1.7) out of a maximum possible score of 10. The results also showed that being unemployed, with longer hospitalisation, low haemoglobin, and having lung cancer seem to predict higher levels of CRF. CONCLUSION Several variables and factors associated with CRF were identified. In response to these results, healthcare providers should pay more attention to CRF, which needs to be assessed on a regular basis and to be managed with the available pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

Abstract
The poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor rucaparib is approved as monotherapy in the treatment and maintenance settings for women with relapsed ovarian cancer in the European Union and the United States. We review the safety profile of rucaparib in both settings and provide recommendations for the clinical management of the main adverse events (AEs) that may occur during rucaparib treatment. We searched PubMed and congress proceedings for safety data on oral rucaparib monotherapy (600 mg twice daily) from clinical trials involving patients with relapsed ovarian cancer. AE management guidance was developed from clinical trial protocols, rucaparib prescribing information, oncology association guidelines, and author experience. The most frequent any-grade treatment-emergent AEs (TEAEs) included gastrointestinal symptoms, asthenia/fatigue, dysgeusia, anemia/decreased hemoglobin, and increased alanine/aspartate aminotransferase. Across clinical trials, 61.8% of patients had one or more grade 3 or higher TEAEs. Clinicians should employ close follow-up for TEAEs, particularly early in treatment, and educate patients about expected TEAEs and methods for their monitoring and management (e.g., antiemetics for nausea/vomiting, transfusions for hematologic TEAEs, or dose interruptions/reductions for moderate/severe TEAEs). Overall, 16.2% of patients discontinued rucaparib due to TEAEs. Management of AEs that may occur during rucaparib treatment is crucial for patients to obtain optimal clinical benefit by remaining on therapy and to avoid their detrimental impact on quality of life.

Abstract
PurposeTo evaluate the effect of auricular acupressure (AA) on cancer-related fatigue (CRF), sleep disturbance and anxiety in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.Materials and methodsPatients were recruited from the respiratory department of a general hospital and were randomised into three groups. A 9-week course of AA using Semen Vaccariae (SV) (Group A)/AA using magnetic beads (Group B)/routine care (Group C) was implemented. CRF scores were used as the primary outcome while the sleep and anxiety scores were the secondary outcomes. Analysis of variance and least significant difference t-test were used to determine the intergroup differences and paired-sample t-test was used for the intragroup comparison.Results100 lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy were included. Compared with Group C, AA could significantly alleviate CRF (F:24.63, p<0.01), especially for physical and affective fatigue and Group A was more effective for managing physical fatigue than Group B in per-protocol (PP) (−1.75 (−2.69 to –0.82), p<0.01)/Intention to Treat analysis (ITT) (−1.41 (−2.39 to –0.41), p=0.01) analysis. However, AA had no effect on cognitive fatigue. Compared with Group C, only Group A produced significant improvements in sleep quality in PP analysis (−1.17 (−2.23 to –0.10), p=0.03) while it yielded negative results in ITT analysis (−0.82 (−1.74 to 0.10), p=0.08). Compared with Group C, AA could significantly reduce anxiety in PP analysis (F:9.35, p<0.01) while there was no statistical difference between Group B and Group C (−0.95 (−2.81 to 0.90), p=0.31), Group A and Group B (−1.26 (−3.12 to 0.59), p=0.18) in ITT analysis.ConclusionAA can alleviate CRF of lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, especially for physical and affective fatigue. AA using SV is more effective for physical fatigue while AA using magnetic beads works better for anxiety. Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction Prostate cancer is the most prevalent neoplastic disease in men. After diagnosis, different treatment regimens are proposed based on the stage of the cancer. These treatments affect physical and muscle function, quality of life, and prognosis differently. Objectives To assess fatigue, muscle strength, muscle thickness, and muscle quality in prostate cancer survivors undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Methods Ten ADT patients, eight non-ADT patients and 18 healthy control subjects were enrolled in this study. Perceived fatigue was assessed through the 20-item Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory. Muscle thickness and quality (e.g., echo intensity) were assessed through B-mode ultrasound. Muscle strength and work capacity were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer. The groups were compared with one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni adjustment. Results Muscle thickness, peak torque, and work capacity were lower in ADT than in the control group (CON) (p = 0.021; p = 0.005; p <0.001, respectively). ADT showed greater echo intensity than CON (p = 0.005) and N-ADT (p = 0.046). There were no differences between N-ADT and CON in terms of muscle thickness, peak torque, work capacity, and echo intensity (p >0.05). General fatigue was greater in both ADT (p = 0.030) and N-ADT (p = 0.047) compared to CON. Physical fatigue was greater in ADT than CON (p = 0.006). Conclusion ADT patients showed lower levels of muscle function and greater levels of perceived fatigue than healthy control subjects. It appears that muscle function remains lower in ADT patients, even several years after treatment initiation, although this does not apply to non-ADT patients. Abstract
Background: Fatigue is a common and distressing cancer symptom that negatively affects the quality of life. Many scales have been developed to assess cancer-related fatigue. The properties of the scales vary in terms of dimensionality, reliability, validity, length and method of administration. Insufficient of psychometric properties may affect the accuracy of scales findings, that may lead result obtained questionable. The main objective of this review was to conduct a quality assessment of the psychometric properties of cancer-related fatigue scales to identify appropriate scales that could be used in research and clinical practice. Method: A systematic search was carried out to identify validated scales that measure cancer-related fatigue. Five databases were searched: CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library. This review was conducted following the PRISMA and Terwee et al.'s quality assessment guidelines to evaluate the psychometric properties of the studies. Result: Seventy-one different studies published between 1970 and 2018 met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-five scales were identified. Of these, eighteen were multidimensional and seven were uni-dimensional, containing between 4 and 72 items. Reliability and/or validity information was missing for many scales. Four scales met the quality assessment criteria and were reported as the most appropriate for measuring fatigue in cancer patients. Conclusion: Further psychometric testing is required for other scales. Developing a universally-defined tool kit for the assessment of cancer-related fatigue may help clarify the concept of fatigue and promote a systematic approach to fatigue measurement.

Abstract
Profound and debilitating fatigue is the most common complaint reported among individuals with autoimmune disease, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis. Fatigue is multi-faceted and broadly defined, which makes understanding the cause of its manifestations especially difficult in conditions with diverse pathology including autoimmune diseases. In general, fatigue is defined by debilitating periods of exhaustion that interfere with normal activities. The severity and duration of fatigue episodes vary, but fatigue can cause difficulty for even simple tasks like climbing stairs or crossing the room. The exact mechanisms of fatigue are not well-understood, perhaps due to its broad definition. Nevertheless, physiological processes known to play a role in fatigue include oxygen/nutrient supply, metabolism, mood, motivation, and sleepiness-all which are affected by inflammation. Additionally, an important contributing element to fatigue is the central nervous system-a region impacted either directly or indirectly in numerous autoimmune and related disorders. This review describes how inflammation and the central nervous system contribute to fatigue and suggests potential mechanisms involved in fatigue that are likely exhibited in autoimmune and related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies report that practicing Yoga may lead to numerous psychophysiological benefits in patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Moreover, it may result in an effective alternative for coping with sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression and fatigue symptoms. A study based on the "Yoga in Oncology" project of the Foundation Poliambulanza was carried out, and it was designed to explore the benefits of Yoga, therefore corroborating Yoga as a therapeutic activity that can have a beneficial impact on patients diagnosed with cancer. METHODS Seventy patients were recruited, of whom 20% were males and 80% were females 18 years of age and older. All patients were being treated at the oncology department for gastrointestinal, mammary or genital carcinoma, and the disease was metastatic in 80% of patients. Data were collected between April 2013 and May 2017. The protocol consisted of a weekly 90-minute Yoga lesson for 8 consecutive weeks, and the data collection was carried out in 2 phases: (T0) preprotocol assessment and (T1) postprotocol assessment. Psychophysiological assessment was carried out with the following scales: the (BFI) Brief Fatigue Inventory, (HADS) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and (PSQI) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS Data analysis showed a significant difference between the (T0) and (T1) HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) scores. The constructs of this scale consist of psychological variables for the assessment of anxiety and depression. In contrast, scores from the (BFI) Brief Fatigue Inventory and (PSQI) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index did not show significant differences between (T0) and (T1): such scales are relative to psychophysiological variables for an assessment of the perception of fatigue and quality of sleep. CONCLUSION It is noteworthy that the data, once analyzed, showed a significant difference between preprotocol and postprotocol levels of anxiety and depression but not for the perception of fatigue or the quality of sleep. In accordance with the scientific literature, data from this study highlight that practicing Yoga may promote changes in the levels of perceived anxiety and depression in patients undergoing treatment for cancer, thus positively affecting their (QoL). It is clear that the difference in significance between the psychological and physiological variables considered here and the statistical significance found only in levels of anxiety and depression encourage further studies to account for the nature of fatigue and sleep disturbances and how to address these symptoms in oncological patients. Moreover, other points of interest for future clinical research regard the evaluation of the reason for the possible denial to participate to this kind of study, as well as the social-cultural differences in patients' behavior.

Abstract
Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is common in young adults and considered curable in most patients. Young HL survivors (HLS) are at risk of long-term adverse effects. Our study aimed to assess various fatigue and quality of life (QoL) complaints, and their correlations with treatment. Self-reported questionnaires assessing fatigue (MFI-20) and QoL-related issues (EORTC-QOL-C-30) were used to examine HLS aged 18-65 who completed first-line chemotherapy ± radiotherapy (RT) and were in complete remission for at least six months post-therapy. The cohort included 120 HLS (median age 32 years), assessed between 6 months and 15 years post-treatment. About 28% presented with severe fatigue and severely reduced QoL. Higher fatigue levels were associated with four cycles of the ABVD + RT. Young HLS experience high levels of persistent physical fatigue, emotional distress, and cognitive decline that are insufficiently investigated. Assessment of these complaints is essential and further investigation may provide tailored solutions for a better QoL for HLS.

Abstract
CONTEXT Patient's rating of perceived effort (RPE) is used to assess central fatigue. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is believed to be of central origin. The increased RPE with a motor task, such as the Finger-Tapping Test (FTT), can easily be measured in the clinical setting. OBJECTIVES To correlate the FTT, RPE and the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) rated fatigue severity in patients with cancer. METHODS Subjective fatigue was assessed in adult patients with cancer by the BFI. Participants performed a modified FTT with the index finger of the dominant hand: 15 seconds × 2, 30 seconds × 2, and 60 seconds × 2 with 1 minute of rest between each time trial. Rating of perceived effort at the end of task was measured by the Borg 10 scale. EXCLUSIONS Brain metastasis, history of brain radiation, Parkinson disease, Huntington Chorea, multiple sclerosis, delirium, and depression. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to describe the relationships between BFI, FTT, and Borg 10 scale. RESULTS Thirty patients participated. Mean age was 56.2. Sixteen were females (53.3%). The mean BFI mean was 4.1, median 4.4. Tapping rate did not correlate with fatigue severity. The RPE correlated with the mean BFI: r s 0.438, P = .0155. These correlations persisted after adjustment for age. CONCLUSION An increased RPE in the absence of task failure suggests that the origin of CRF is central. The performance of an FTT with RPE helps to improve our understanding of fatigue in the clinical setting.

Abstract
CONTEXT Fatigue is the most common symptom associated with cancer and its treatment. Investigation of molecular mechanisms associated with fatigue may identify new therapeutic targets. OBJECTIVE The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the relationships between gene expression and methylation status and evening fatigue severity in women with breast cancer who received chemotherapy. METHODS Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify evening fatigue phenotypes. In this analysis, the lowest (i.e., moderate, n = 7) and highest (i.e., very high, n = 29) fatigue-severity classes identified using LCA were analyzed via two stages. First, a total of 32,609 transcripts from whole blood were evaluated for differences in expression levels between the classes. Next, 637 methylation sites located within the putative transcription factor binding sites for those genes demonstrating differential expression were evaluated for differential methylation state between the classes. RESULTS A total of 89 transcripts in 75 unique genes were differentially expressed between the moderate (the lowest fatigue-severity class identified) and very high evening fatigue classes. In addition, 23 differentially methylated probes and three differentially methylated regions were found between the moderate and very high evening fatigue classes. CONCLUSIONS Using a multistaged integrated analysis of gene expression and methylation, differential methylation was identified in the regulatory regions of genes associated with previously hypothesized mechanisms for fatigue, including inflammation, immune function, neurotransmission, circadian rhythm, skeletal muscle energy, carbohydrate metabolism, and renal function as well as core biological processes including gene transcription and the cell-cycle regulation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fatigue is one of the most disabling symptoms in cancer patients. Many instruments exist to measure fatigue. This variety impedes the comparison of data across studies or to the general population. We aimed to estimate a common metric based on six different fatigue instruments (EORTC QLQ-C30 subscale fatigue, EORTC QLQ-FA12, MFI subscale General Fatigue, BFI, Fatigue Scale, and Fatigue Diagnostic Interview Guide) to convert the patients' scores from one of the instruments to another. Additionally, we linked the common metric to the general population. METHODS For n = 1225 cancer patients, the common metric was estimated using the Item Response Theory framework. The linking between the common metric of the patients and the general population was estimated using linear regression. RESULTS The common metric was based on a model with acceptable fit (CFI = 0.94, SRMR = 0.06). Based on the standard error of measurement the reliability coefficients of the questionnaires ranged from 0.80 to 0.95. The common metric of the six questionnaires, also linked to the general population, is reported graphically and in supplementary crosswalk tables. CONCLUSIONS Our study enables researchers and clinicians to directly compare results across studies using different fatigue questionnaires and to assess the degree of fatigue with respect to the general population.

Abstract
The types of changes in physical appearance and behavior that occur in elderly people similarly develop in elderly animals. Signs and symptoms that might cause concern in younger people or mice may be normal in their elderly but generally healthy counterparts. Although numerous scoring methods have been developed to assess rodent health, these systems were often designed for young adults used in specific types of research, such as cancer or neurologic studies, and therefore may be suboptimal for assessing aging rodents. Approaches known as frailty assessments provide a global evaluation of the health of aged mice, rats, and people, and mouse frailty scores correlate well with the likelihood of death. Complementing frailty assessment, prediction of imminent death in aged mice can often be accomplished by focusing on 2 objective parameters-body weight and temperature. Before they die, many (but not all) mice develop marked reductions in body weight and temperature, thus providing signs that close monitoring, intervention, or preemptive euthanasia may be necessary. Timely preemptive euthanasia allows antemortem collection of data and samples that would be lost if spontaneous death occurred; preemptive euthanasia also limits terminal suffering. These approaches to monitoring declining health and predicting death in elderly research mice can aid in establishing and implementing timely interventions that both benefit the research and reduce antemortem suffering.

Abstract
We examined the transcriptome/post-transcriptome for persistent gene expression changes after radiation exposure in a baboon model. Eighteen baboons were irradiated with a whole body equivalent dose of 2.5 or 5 Gy. Blood samples were taken before, 7, 28 and 75–106 days after radiation exposure. Stage I was a whole genome screening for mRNA combined with a qRT-PCR platform for detection of 667 miRNAs. Candidate mRNAs and miRNAs differentially up- or down-regulated in stage I were chosen for validation in stage II using the remaining samples. Only 12 of 32 candidate genes provided analyzable results with two mRNAs showing significant 3–5-fold differences in gene expression over the reference (p < 0.0001). From 667 candidate miRNAs, 290 miRNA were eligible for analysis with 21 miRNAs independently validated using qRT-PCR. These miRNAs showed persistent expression changes on each day and over days 7–106 days after exposure (n = 7). In particular miR-212 involved in radiosensitivity and immune modulation appeared persistently and 48–77-fold up-regulated over the entire time period. We are finally trying to put our results into a context of clinical implications and provide possible hints on underlying molecular mechanisms to be examined in future studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the correlation between the SERT gene promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs25531 and rs956304 and the cancer-related fatigue (CRF) of colon and rectal cancer, and also to analyze the correlation of the interaction of genetic and non-genetic factors. METHOD A sample of 568 colon and rectal cancer patients were recruited from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from October 2013 to December 2015. The Chinese version of the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI-C) was used to evaluate the CRF. The genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples of the patients. Direct sequencing was used to determine the rs25531 and rs956304 genotypes. RESULTS Compared with the AA genotype, the risk of suffering from CRF and the severity of CRF increased to 1.77 times (95% CI = 1.22-2.59, P = 0.003) for patients who carry with G allele (AG+GG genotype) at rs25531 locus. CONCLUSIONS The SERT gene promoter SNP rs25531 was associated with the CRF in patients with colon and rectal cancer and the G genotype was an independent risk factor for CRF among individuals with colon and rectal cancer in the study.

Abstract
Older adults with cancer present a unique set of management complexities for oncologists and radiation oncologists. Prognosis and resilience to cancer treatments are notably dependent on the presence or risk of "geriatric syndromes," in addition to cancer stage and histology. Recognition, proper evaluation, and management of these conditions in conjunction with management of the cancer itself are critical and can be accomplished by utilization of various geriatric assessment tools. Here we review principles of the geriatric assessment, common geriatric syndromes, and application of these concepts to multidisciplinary oncologic treatment. Older patients may experience toxicities related to treatments that impact treatment effectiveness, quality of life, treatment-related mortality, and treatment compliance. Treatment-related burdens from radiotherapy are increasingly important considerations and include procedural demands, travel, costs, and temporary or permanent loss of functional independence. An overall approach to delivering radiotherapy to an older cancer patient requires a comprehensive assessment of both physical and nonphysical factors that may impact treatment outcome. Patient and family-centered communication is also an important part of developing a shared understanding of illness and reasonable expectations of treatment.

Abstract
Cancer and its treatment can result in impairments that limit physical, psychosocial, and cognitive functioning, interfering with patients' ability to perform work-related functions. Because these work limitations can carry significant personal and societal costs, there is a timely need to identify and refer patients to cancer rehabilitation services to manage adverse consequences of treatment and to preserve employment. Coordinated efforts in 3 key areas will better connect patients to rehabilitation interventions that will help optimize employment. These include the following: planning for the impact of cancer on the ability to work; implementing routine screening for impairments and facilitating referrals to cancer rehabilitation specialists; and focusing rehabilitation interventions on preserving employment. Coordinated strategies are presented to achieve these 3 goals, including the following: implementing changes to clinical practice to routinely screen for impairments; working with oncology providers and patients to better understand the benefits of cancer rehabilitation to facilitate referrals and uptake; training more cancer rehabilitation providers to handle the increased need; better coordination of care across providers and with employers; and filling research gaps needed to proactively anticipate how cancer treatment would affect work for a given patient and deploy personalized interventions to preserve the ability to work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) approach on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) chemotherapy patients. METHODS A total of 162 participants who treated with gemcitabine combined with platinum-based drugs (GP chemotherapy) were randomly assigned to three groups: Control (Group A, n=56), Sham TEAS (Group B, n=49), and TEAS (Group C, n=57). The following acupoints were used in this study: Qihai (CV6), Keshu (UB17), and Zusanli (ST36). The Revised Piper Fatigue Scale (RPFS) were used to measure CRF on the day before chemotherapy (P1), days 8 (P2) and 28 (P3) separately. The Differences among three groups were analyzed. RESULTS At the 28th day, the outcomes of the fatigue scores for Group C, Group B and Group A were 2.06±0.90, 2.80±1.34, 3.00±1.29 respectively. There were significantly different among three groups (F=9.784, P<0.01). At the 28th day, the outcomes of the affective fatigue (F=8.161, P<0.01), sensory fatigue (F=3.06, P=0.05) and cognitive fatigue (F=8.06, P<0.01) for Group C, Group B and Group A were significantly different among three groups. CONCLUSIONS Chemotherapy may increase the fatigue from P1 to P2 and P3 in NSCLC patients. And TEAS could help to relived CRF, especially at P3.

Abstract
Modern therapeutic management of patients with cancer is associated with many adverse side effects, including fatigue defined as weariness, burnout, lassitude, malaise, apathy, impatience, and/or inability to perform daily activities. It occurs frequently before the diagnosis of cancer and may persist for a long time after the end of cancer therapy. It is a common problem that occurs regardless of the type of cancer and applied therapeutic procedure. The appearance of this symptom significantly affects the quality of life of patients and often reduces the effectiveness of implemented treatment. The symptom of fatigue occurs among approximately 80% of patients treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, as well as among more than 75% of patients with metastatic disease. Causes of fatigue include metabolic and immune system disorders as well as increased level of tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Recent studies also indicate a significant contribution of other cytokines, especially pro-inflammatory ones, i.e. interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble tumour necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF type II) and C-reactive protein (CRP). A patient reporting fatigue should be properly diagnosed and thoroughly interviewed by doctors. Patients are mostly treated non-pharmacologically (by means of physical exercise and psychotherapy) and pharmacologically (by applying methylphenidate and methylprednisolone). What is also extremely important is proper education of the patient and their closest family/friends on the symptoms, which significantly reduces anxiety and stress. On the other hand therapeutic management hinders the subjectivity of feeling and lack of standardised scales to rate symptoms.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare fatigue, strength, body composition, muscle thickness, and muscle quality between Hodgkin's lymphoma survivors (HLS) and apparently healthy subjects matched by age, gender, and physical activity levels (CON). Twelve HLS (32.16 ± 8.06) and 36 CON (32.42 ± 7.64) were enrolled in the study. Fatigue was assessed using the 20-item Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer, body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and thickness and muscle quality using B-mode ultrasound. Differences between HLS and CON were analyzed using independent samples t tests. No significant differences were observed between groups for any demographic characteristics: age ( P = .922), weight ( P = .943), height ( P = .511), body mass index ( P = .796), fat mass ( P = .688), fat-free mass ( P = .520), and percent body fat ( P = .446). No significant differences were observed for strength (peak torque; P = .552), relative peak torque ( P = .200), muscle thickness ( P > .05) and muscle quality ( P > .05). However, self-perceived fatigue was significantly higher in HLS than in CON ( P = .009). It appears that when HLS are matched by age and physical activity levels to CON, no significant difference in body composition, muscle thickness, muscle quality, or strength is observed. Self-perceived fatigue, as predicted, is higher in HLS, which may have implications and should be considered when prescribing exercise training to this cancer population.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse the health status of breast cancer survivors and the effects of 12 weeks of aerobic training. Twenty-three breast cancer survivors (51.71 ± 3.17 years) and 23 healthy women (50.73 ± 2.97 years) were investigated for body composition, daily physical activity, quality of life, salivary cortisol, and DHEA-S. Breast cancer survivors were then aerobically trained for 12 weeks. Breast cancer survivors have a worse psychophysical health than healthy women. Aerobic training increased salivary DHEA-S, aerobic fitness, self-reported health, and nocturnal sleeping time and reduced salivary cortisol in breast cancer survivors. Salivary cortisol variation correlated with change of sleeping time and self-reported health. Salivary DHEA-S correlated with change of self-reported physical pain and general health as well. Breast cancer survivors can live in a situation of continuous distress, requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Twelve weeks of aerobic training improve the psychophysical health of breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and distressing side effect of cancer and its treatment that remains inadequately understood and poorly managed. A better understanding of the factors contributing to CRF could result in more effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of CRF. The objectives of this study were to examine the prevalence, severity, and potential predictors for the early onset of CRF after chemotherapy cycle 1 in breast cancer patients. METHODS We report on a secondary data analysis of 548 female breast cancer patients from a phase III multi-center randomized controlled trial examining antiemetic efficacy. CRF was assessed by the Brief Fatigue Inventory at pre- and post-chemotherapy cycle 1 as well as by the four-day diary. RESULTS The prevalence of clinically relevant post-CRF was 75%. Linear regression showed that pre-treatment CRF, greater nausea, disturbed sleep, and younger age were significant risk factors for post-CRF (adjusted R2 = 0.39; P < 0.0001). Path modeling showed that nausea severity influenced post-CRF both directly and indirectly by influencing disturbed sleep. Similarly, pre-treatment CRF influenced post-CRF directly as well as indirectly through both nausea severity and disturbed sleep. Pearson correlations showed that changes in CRF over time were significantly correlated with concurrent changes in nausea severity (r = 0.41; P < 0.0001) and in disturbed sleep (r = 0.20; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION This study showed a high prevalence (75%) of clinically relevant CRF in breast cancer patients following their initial chemotherapy, and that nausea severity, disturbed sleep, pre-treatment CRF, and age were significant predictors of symptom.
