In vitro cytotoxicity of oxide nanoparticles: comparison to asbestos, silica, and the effect of particle solubility

Potential of biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles to control Fusarium wilt disease in eggplant (Solanum melongena) and promote plant growth

In this study, a novel, non-toxic, eco-friendly zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) was used instead of the synthetic fungicides widely used to control the destructive phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum, the causative agent of wilt disease in Solanum melongena L. Herein, the biosynthesized ZnO-NPs was carried out by Penicillium expansum ATCC 7861. In vitro, mycosynthesized ZnO-NPs exhibited antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum. In vivo, ZnO-NPs suppressed Fusarium wilt disease in cultivated Solanum melongena L. by decreasing the disease severity with 75% of plant protection. Moreover, ZnO-NPs stimulated the recovery of eggplant as an indicated by improving of morphological and metabolic indicators including plant height(152.5%), root length(106.6%), plant fresh biomass (146%), chlorophyll a (102.8%), chlorophyll b (67.86%), total soluble carbohydrates (48.5%), total soluble protein (81.8%), phenol (10.5%), antioxidant activity and isozymes compared with infected control. Therefore, this study suggests using mycosynthesized ZnO-NPs as an alternative to synthetic fungicides not only to eradicate the Fusarium wilt disease in cultivated eggplant (Solanum melongena) but also to promote the growth parameters and metabolic aspects.

Novel fabrication of bi-metal oxide hybrid nanocomposites for synergetic enhancement of in vivo healing and wound care after caesarean section surgery

In the current study, bi‐metal oxide hybrid nanocomposites prepared by cerium oxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles are included into chitosan‐ZnO composites for developing the potential materials of dressing the wound. The wound healing effect of prepared hybrid nanocomposites was evaluated regarding the surface morphology, functional groups, thermal degradation and composite size. The antimicrobial activity of chitosan‐ZnO/CeO₂ hybrid nano composites was tested against the pathogens of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The hybrid nanocomposites containing CeO₂‐based chitosan and ZnO nanoparticles were taken for optimum dressing included in the vivo studies on the excisional wounds in wistar rats. After 2 weeks, it is seen that the wound treated with CS‐ZnO/CeO₂ hybrid nano composites consists of the significant dressing of nearly 100% compared with control which showed nearly 65% of wound closure. Finally, our reported results gave the proof in supporting the availability of CS‐ZnO/CeO₂ hybrid nanocomposites contains the dressing of the wounds for the treatment.

Bioinspired NiO Nanospheres: Exploring In Vitro Toxicity Using Bm-17 and L. rohita Liver Cells, DNA Degradation, Docking, and Proposed Vacuolization Mechanism

The present work demonstrated a novel Cleome simplicifolia-mediated green fabrication of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) to explore in vitro toxicity in Bm-17 and Labeo rohita liver cells. As-fabricated bioinspired NiO NPs were characterized by several analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed a crystalline face-centered-cubic structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed NiO formation. The chemical composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) revealed the mesoporous nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the formation of 97 nm diameter nanospheres formed due to the congregation of 10 nm size particles. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed the nearly isotropic behavior of NiO NPs. Further, a molecular docking study was performed to explore their toxicity by binding with genetic molecules, and it was found that the docking energy was about -9.65284 kcal/mol. On evaluating the in vitro toxicity of NiO NPs for Bm-17 cells, the study showed that when cells were treated with a high concentration of NPs, cells were affected severely by toxicity, while at a lower concentration, cells were affected slightly. Further, on using 50 μg/mL, quick deaths of cells were observed due to the formation of more vacuoles in the cells. The DNA degradation study revealed that NiO NPs are significantly responsible for DNA degradation. For further confirmation, trypan blue assay was observed for cell viability, and morphological assessment was performed using inverted tissue culture microscopy. Further, the cytotoxicity of NiO NPs in L. rohita liver cells was studied. No toxicity was observed at 1 mg/L of NiO NPs; however, when the concentration was 30 and 90 mg/L, dark and shrank hepatic parenchyma was observed. Hence, the main cause of cell lysis is the increased vacuolization in the cells. Thus, the present study suggests that the cytotoxicity induced by NiO NPs could be used in anticancer drugs.

Biocompatible Yb3+/Er3+ Co-activated La2(WO4)3 Upconversion Nanophosphors for Optical Thermometry, Biofluorescent, and Anticancer Agents

Non-cytotoxic upconversion nanocrystals are preferred candidates because they offer exceptional advantages for numerous applications, ranging from optical thermometry to bioimaging/biomedical applications. In this report, we demonstrate the luminescence characteristics and practical utility of a multifunctional upconversion nanophosphor based on Yb³⁺/Er³⁺:La₂(WO₄)₃ (LWO) flakes. Strong upconversion green emission was observed from 6-mol % Er³⁺-doped LWO nanophosphor flakes excited by a 980 nm laser. We further enhanced the upconversion emission considerably by co-doping LWO nanophosphors with Yb³⁺/Er³⁺ to exploit energy migration from Yb³⁺ to Er³⁺ ions. The exceptional improvement in upconversion green and near-infrared emission was achieved by Yb³⁺ ion co-doping up to 6 mol %; beyond 6 mol %, emission intensities remarkably dropped due to concentration quenching. Photometric parameters were evaluated with and without Yb³⁺ ion-doped LWO nanophosphors, which exhibited a high green color purity of 95.6%, to elucidate their energy transfer mechanism. In addition, temperature-dependent upconversion emission trends were evaluated by analyzing the fluorescence intensity ratio, exhibiting higher temperature sensitivity than that previously reported. This suggests the applicability of our proposed nanophosphors to optical thermometry. As for bioimaging applications, the non-cytotoxicity of the optimized nanophosphor was confirmed based on distinct fluorescence images of a normal fibroblast cell line (L929). Furthermore, we demonstrated the strong cytotoxicity of nanophosphors against human colon cancer (HCT-116) cells. Based on the results, non-cytotoxic Yb³⁺(6 mol %)/Er³⁺ (6 mol %):LWO upconversion nanophosphor flakes are expected to be exceptional candidates owing to their extensive suitability to the fields of upconversion lasers, optical thermometry, and biomedical and anticancer applications. The results indicate the potential of upconversion materials in the effective execution of multiple strategic applications.

How the Physicochemical Properties of Manufactured Nanomaterials Affect Their Performance in Dispersion and Their Applications in Biomedicine: A Review

The growth in novel synthesis methods and in the range of possible applications has led to the development of a large variety of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs), which can, in principle, come into close contact with humans and be dispersed in the environment. The nanomaterials interact with the surrounding environment, this being either the proteins and/or cells in a biological medium or the matrix constituent in a dispersion or composite, and an interface is formed whose properties depend on the physicochemical interactions and on colloidal forces. The development of predictive relationships between the characteristics of individual MNMs and their potential practical use critically depends on how the key parameters of MNMs, such as the size, shape, surface chemistry, surface charge, surface coating, etc., affect the behavior in a test medium. This relationship between the biophysicochemical properties of the MNMs and their practical use is defined as their functionality; understanding this relationship is very important for the safe use of these nanomaterials. In this mini review, we attempt to identify the key parameters of nanomaterials and establish a relationship between these and the main MNM functionalities, which would play an important role in the safe design of MNMs; thus, reducing the possible health and environmental risks early on in the innovation process, when the functionality of a nanomaterial and its toxicity/safety will be taken into account in an integrated way. This review aims to contribute to a decision tree strategy for the optimum design of safe nanomaterials, by going beyond the compromise between functionality and safety.

Antiacne Effects of PVA/ZnO Composite Nanofibers Crosslinked by Citric Acid for Facial Sheet Masks

The water-insoluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers containing ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by an electrospinning technique for antiacne facial masks. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles prepared by a sol-gel method were dispersed in aqueous PVA and citric acid solution for electrospinning. The electrospun nanofibers were treated at 160°C to induce the thermal crosslinking between PVA and citric acid. The crosslinked PVA with citric acid become water-insoluble, which can be used for facial masks. PVA/ZnO composite nanofibers were characterized by structural and morphological analysis techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also, the swelling ratios according to the ZnO content (0, 1, 4, and 7 wt.% with respect to PVA) were measured. Antibacterial activity tests were also studied. The clear zone of Cutibacterium acnes of PVA/ZnO 7% nanofibers was 2.25 mm, indicating antiacne activities of nanofibers.

Phytotoxicological effects of engineered nanoparticles: An emerging nanotoxicology

Recent innovations in the field of nanoscience and technology and its proficiency as a part of inter-disciplinary science has set an eclectic display in innumerable branches of science, a majority in aliened health science of human and agriculture. Modern agricultural practices have been shifting towards the implementation of nanotechnology-based solutions to combat various emerging problems ranging from safe delivery of nutrients to sustainable approaches for plant protection. In these processes, engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are widely used as nanocarriers (to deliver nutrients and pesticides) due to their high permeability, efficacy, biocompatibility, and biodegradability properties. Even though the constructive nature of nanoparticles (NPs), nanomaterials (NMs), and other modified or ENPs towards sustainable development in agriculture is referenced, the darker side i.e., eco-toxicological effects is still not covered to a larger extent. The overwhelming usage of these trending NMs has led to continuous persistence in the ecosystem, and their interface with the biotic and abiotic community, degradation lanes and intervention, which might lead to certain beneficial or malefic effects. Metal oxide NPs and polymeric NPs (Alginate, chitosan, and polyethylene glycol) are the most used ENPs, which are posing the nature of beneficial as well as environmentally concerning hazardous materials depending upon their fate and persistence in the ecosystem. The cautious usage of NMs in a scientific way is most essential to harness beneficial aspects of NMs in the field of agriculture whilst minimizing the eco-toxicological effects. The current review is focused on the toxicological effects of various NMs on plant physiology and health. It details interactions of plant intracellular components between applied/persistent NMs, which have brought out drastic changes in seed germination, crop productivity, direct and indirect interaction at the enzymatic as well as nuclear levels. In conclusion, ENPs can pose as genotoxicants that may alter the plant phenotype if not administered appropriately.

The Effect of TiO2 Nanoparticles on the Composition and Ultrastructure of Wheat

The present work aims to follow the influence of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on bioactive compounds, the elemental content of wheat, and on wheat leaves' ultrastructure. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The concentration of phenolic compounds, assimilation pigments, antioxidant capacity, elemental content, as well as the ultrastructural changes that may occur in the wheat plants grown in the presence or absence of TiO2 NPs were evaluated. In plants grown in the presence of TiO2 NPs, the amount of assimilating pigments and total polyphenols decreased compared to the control sample, while the antioxidant activity of plants grown in amended soil was higher than those grown in control soil. Following ultrastructural analysis, no significant changes were observed in the leaves of TiO2-treated plants. Application of TiO2 NPs to soil caused a significant reaction of the plant to stress conditions. This was revealed by the increase of antioxidant capacity and the decrease of chlorophyll, total polyphenols, and carotenoids. Besides, the application of TiO2 NPs led to significant positive (K, Zn, Br, and Mo) and negative (Na, Mn, Fe, As, Sr, Sb, and Ba) variation of content.

Bioinorganic Chemistry of Zinc in Relation to the Immune System

Zinc is well-known to have a central role in human inflammation and immunity and is itself an anti-inflammatory and antiviral agent. Despite its massively documented role in such processes, the underlying chemistry of zinc in relation to specific proteins and pathways of the immune system has not received much focus. This short review provides an overview of this topic, with emphasis on the structures of key proteins, zinc coordination chemistry, and probable mechanisms involved in zinc-based immunity, with some focus points for future chemical and biological research.

Silver Nanoparticles Increase Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium Concentrations in Leaves and Stimulate Root Length and Number of Roots in Tomato Seedlings in a Hormetic Manner

Background

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) display unique biological activities and may serve as novel biostimulators. Nonetheless, their biostimulant effects on germination, early growth, and major nutrient concentrations (N, P, and K) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) have been little explored.

Methods

Tomato seeds of the Vengador and Rio Grande cultivars were germinated on filter paper inside plastic containers in the presence of 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L AgNPs. Germination parameters were recorded daily, while early growth traits of seedlings were determined 20 days after applying the treatments (dat). To determine nutrient concentrations in leaves, a hydroponic experiment was established, adding AgNPs to the nutrient solution. Thirty-day-old plants were established in the hydroponic system and kept there for 7 days, and subsequently, leaves were harvested and nutrient concentrations were determined.

Results

The AgNPs applied did not affect germination parameters, whereas their application stimulated length and number of roots in a hormetic manner. In 37-day-old plants, low AgNP applications increased the concentrations of N, P, and K in leaves.

Conclusion

As novel biostimulants, AgNPs promoted root development, especially when applied at 5 mg/L. Furthermore, they increased N, P, and K concentration in leaves, which is advantageous for seedling performance during the early developmental stages.

Interactions of Coated-Gold Engineered Nanoparticles with Aquatic Higher Plant Salvinia minima Baker

The study investigated the interactions of coated-gold engineered nanoparticles (nAu) with the aquatic higher plant Salvinia minima Baker in 2,7, and 14 d. Herein, the nAu concentration of 1000 µg/L was used; as in lower concentrations, analytical limitations persisted but >1000 µg/L were deemed too high and unlikely to be present in the environment. Exposure of S. minima to 1000 µg/L of citrate (cit)- and branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI)-coated nAu (5, 20, and 40 nm) in 10% Hoagland’s medium (10 HM) had marginal effect on biomass and growth rate irrespective of nAu size, coating type, or exposure duration. Further, results demonstrated that nAu were adsorbed on the plants’ roots irrespective of their size or coating variant; however, no evidence of internalization was apparent, and this was attributed to high agglomeration of nAu in 10 HM. Hence, adsorption was concluded as the basic mechanism of nAu accumulation by S. minima. Overall, the long-term exposure of S. minima to nAu did not inhibit plant biomass and growth rate but agglomerates on plant roots may block cell wall pores, and, in turn, alter uptake of essential macronutrients in plants, thus potentially affecting the overall ecological function.

Living Lactobacillus-ZnO nanoparticles hybrids as antimicrobial and antibiofilm coatings for wound dressing application

Probiotic bacteria are able to produce antimicrobial substances as well as to synthesize green metal nanoparticles (NPs). New antimicrobial and antibiofilm coatings (LAB-ZnO NPs), composed of Lactobacillus strains and green ZnO NPs, were employed for the modification of gum Arabic-polyvinyl alcohol-polycaprolactone nanofibers matrix (GA-PVA-PCL) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The physicochemical properties of ZnO NPs biologically synthesized by L. plantarum and L. acidophilus, LAB-ZnO NPs hybrids and LAB-ZnO NPs@GA-PVA-PCL were studied using FE-SEM, EDX, EM, FTIR, XRD and ICP-OES. The morphology of LAB-ZnO NPs hybrids was spherical in range of 4.56-91.61 nm with an average diameter about 34 nm. The electrospun GA-PVA-PCL had regular, continuous and without beads morphology in the scale of nanometer and micrometer with an average diameter of 565 nm. Interestingly, the LAB not only acted as a biosynthesizer in the green synthesis of ZnO NPs but also synergistically enhanced the antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy of LAB-ZnO NPs@GA-PVA-PCL. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity of ZnO NPs and ZnO NPs@GA-PVA-PCL on the mouse embryonic fibroblasts cell line led to make them biocompatible. These results suggest that LAB-ZnO NPs@GA-PVA-PCL has potential as a safe promising antimicrobial and antibiofilm dressing in wound healing against pathogens.

Effect of Nanostructures on the Properties of Glass Ionomer Dental Restoratives/Cements: A Comprehensive Narrative Review

Overall perspective of nanotechnology and reinforcement of dental biomaterials by nanoparticles has been reported in the literature. However, the literature regarding the reinforcement of dental biomaterials after incorporating various nanostructures is sparse. The present review addresses current developments of glass ionomer cements (GICs) after incorporating various metallic, polymeric, inorganic and carbon-based nanostructures. In addition, types, applications, and implications of various nanostructures incorporated in GICs are discussed. Most of the attempts by researchers are based on the laboratory-based studies; hence, it warrants long-term clinical trials to aid the development of suitable materials for the load bearing posterior dentition. Nevertheless, a few meaningful conclusions are drawn from this substantial piece of work; they are as follows: (1) most of the nanostructures are likely to enhance the mechanical strength of GICs; (2) certain nanostructures improve the antibacterial activity of GICs against the cariogenic bacteria; (3) clinical translation of these promising outcomes are completely missing, and (4) the nanostructured modified GICs could perform better than their conventional counterparts in the load bearing posterior dentition.

Nanobiotechnological advancements in agriculture and food industry: Applications, nanotoxicity, and future perspectives

The high demand for sufficient and safe food, and continuous damage of environment by conventional agriculture are major challenges facing the globe. The necessity of smart alternatives and more sustainable practices in food production is crucial to confront the steady increase in human population and careless depletion of global resources. Nanotechnology implementation in agriculture offers smart delivery systems of nutrients, pesticides, and genetic materials for enhanced soil fertility and protection, along with improved traits for better stress tolerance. Additionally, nano-based sensors are the ideal approach towards precision farming for monitoring all factors that impact on agricultural productivity. Furthermore, nanotechnology can play a significant role in post-harvest food processing and packaging to reduce food contamination and wastage. In this review, nanotechnology applications in the agriculture and food sector are reviewed. Implementations of nanotechnology in agriculture have included nano- remediation of wastewater for land irrigation, nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanosensors, while the beneficial effects of nanomaterials (NMs) in promoting genetic traits, germination, and stress tolerance of plants are discussed. Furthermore, the article highlights the efficiency of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanozymes in food processing and packaging. To this end, the potential risks and impacts of NMs on soil, plants, and human tissues and organs are emphasized in order to unravel the complex bio-nano interactions. Finally, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of nanotechnology are evaluated and discussed to provide a broad and clear view of the nanotechnology potentials, as well as future directions for nano-based agri-food applications towards sustainability.

Effect of Polyethylene Film Thickness on the Antimicrobial Activity of Embedded Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Microbial contamination of most foods occurs primarily at the surface during postprocessing and handling; therefore, preventing cross-contamination by incorporation of antimicrobial substances in contact with the surface of the product is an efficient strategy in reducing food contamination risks. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) have been used widely to achieve antimicrobial films in various applications including the food industry. This work describes the fabrication of antimicrobial polymeric films containing ZnONPs produced by the coextrusion and dip-coating techniques. Effects of skin layer thicknesses containing ZnONPs on the antimicrobial effectiveness of the film by their capability to inactivate Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were studied for both methods. The antimicrobial properties of the coextruded multilayer LLDPE/ZnONP nanocomposite films evidenced antimicrobial activity in the range 0.5-1.5 log reductions, while in the case of a sandblasted multilayer film, it showed high antimicrobial properties as around 99.99%. The optical properties of coextruded multilayer films were measured and discussed. Furthermore, to achieve a thinner LLDPE thickness, ZnONPs were coated with different concentrations of LLDPE solution by the dip-coating method. TEM confirmed that a homogeneous layer is formed on the surface of ZnONPs. The thickness of the LLDPE layer estimated by TEM was about 2 nm and film produced 3 log and 4 log reductions for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The results show that developed films have the potential to be used as food packaging films and can extend shelf life, maintain quality, and assure the safety of food. The antimicrobial mechanisms of ZnONPs were also investigated. It was found that direct contact of particles with products is necessary to assure high antibacterial activity of the films.

Microbial cell factories a new dimension in bio-nanotechnology: exploring the robustness of nature

Bio-based nanotechnology has its existence in biological dimensions e.g. microbial cell factories (bacteria, fungi. algae, yeast, cyanobacteria) plants, and biopolymers. They provide multipurpose biological platforms to supply well-designed materials for diverse nano-biotechnological applications. The "green or bio-based synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs)" has witnessed a research outburst in the past decade. The bio-based synthesis of NPs using microbial cell factories is a benign process and requires mild conditions for the synthesis with end products being less/non-toxic. As a result, its application has extended in multitudinous industries including environment, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical. Thus, the present review summarizes all the significant aspects of nanotechnology and the reason to switch towards the bio-based synthesis of NPs using microbial cell factories. It consists of a detailed description of the bio-based methods employed for the synthesis and classification of NPs. Also, a comprehensive study on the application of bio-based NPs in the various industrial and biotechnological domains has been discussed. The limitation and its solution would help identify the applicability of NPs to "identified and unidentified" sectors.

Biosynthesis and Characterization of ZnO Nanoparticles Using Ochradenus arabicus and Their Effect on Growth and Antioxidant Systems of Maerua oblongifolia

Zincoxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are among the most produced and used nanomaterials worldwide, and in recent times these nanoparticles have also been incorporate in plant science and agricultural research. The present study was planned to synthesize ZnO NPs biologically using Ochradenus arabicus leaves and examine their effect on the morphology and physiology properties of Maerua oblongifolia cultured in vitro. ZnO NPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy, which demonstrated hexagonal shape nanoparticles of size ranging from 10 to 50 nm. Thus, the study uncovered an efficient, eco-friendly and simple technique for biosynthesis of multifunctional ZnO NPs using Ochradenus arabicus following growth of Maerua oblongifolia shoots in different concentrations of ZnO NPs (0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, or 20 mg L^-1) in Murashige and Skoog medium. Remarkable increases in plant biomass, photosynthetic pigments, and total protein were recorded up to a concentration of 5 mg L^-1; at the same time, the results demonstrated a significant reduction in lipid peroxidation levels with respect to control. Interestingly, the levels of proline and the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were increased significantly in response to all ZnO NP treatments. These findings indicate that bioengineered ZnO NPs play a major role in accumulation of biomass and stimulating the activities of antioxidant enzymes in plant tissues. Thus, green-synthesized ZnO NPs might be of agricultural and medicinal benefit owing to their impacts on plants in vitro.

Preparation of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles using Aspergillus niger as Antimicrobial and Anticancer Agents

In the current study, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) were prepared using extracellular extracts of Aspergillus niger. Hence, the morphological structure, optical, and surface features of the synthesized nanoparticles were studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible and infrared absorption by Fourier transform. Use dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements to assess colloidal stability. The mean size of the synthetic particles is approximately 20 ± 5 nm and they have a hexagonal crystal structure. In addition, the prepared nanoparticles have strong light absorption in the ultraviolet region of λ = 265 and 370 nm. To achieve the goal of this study, the efficiency of ZnO-NP was determined as an antibacterial and antifungal against different bacterial and fungal strains. It was found that ZnO-NP showed significant antibacterial activity, where the inhibition zones were varied from 21 to 35mm in diameter against six bacterial species (i.e. K. pneumoniae, E. coli, A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and S. haemolyticus). In such a case, the minimal inhibitory concentration of zinc oxide nanoparticles against bacterial strains were 50, 12.5, 12.5, 50, 12.5, and 12.5μg/ml for K. pneumoniae, E. coli, A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and S. haemolyticus, respectively. Furthermore, ZnO-NP exhibits an antifungal behaviour against four fungal species (i.e., A. niger, P. marneffei, C. glabrata, and C. parapsilosis) with inhibition zone from 18 to 35mm in diameter. Whereas, the MICs for fungal isolates were 12.5μg/ml except A. niger was at 25μg/ml. Wi-38 cells were treated with ZnO-NPs exhibited different levels of cytotoxicity dependent upon the concentration of ZnO NPs using the MTT assay with IC50~800.42. Therefore, the present study introduces a facile and cost-effective extracellular green-synthesis of ZnO-NP to be used as antimicrobial and anticancer agents.

Effects of Mullite, Maghemite, and Silver Nanoparticles Incorporated in β-Wollastonite on Tensile Strength, Magnetism, Bioactivity, and Antimicrobial Activity

β-wollastonite (βW) has sparked much interest in bone defect recovery and regeneration. Biomaterial-associated infections and reactions between implants with human cells have become a standard clinical concern. In this study, a green synthesized βW, synthesized from rice husk ash and a calcined limestone precursor, was incorporated with mullite, maghemite, and silver to produce β wollastonite composite (βWMAF) to enhance the tensile strength and antibacterial properties. The addition of mullite to the βWMAF increased the tensile strength compared to βW. In vitro bioactivity, antibacterial efficacy, and physicochemical properties of the β-wollastonite and βWMAF were characterized. βW and βWMAF samples formed apatite spherules when immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1 day. In conclusion, βWMAF, according to the tensile strength, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity, was observed in this research and appropriate for the reconstruction of cancellous bone defects.

The Role of Apoptosis Pathway in the Cytotoxicity Induced by Fresh and Aged Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are used in a wide range of applications including industry, commercial products and medicine field. Numerous mechanistic studies for ZnO NPs' toxicity were performed on pristine (fresh) NPs. However, the cytotoxicity induced by the transformed (aged) ZnO NPs and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we observed the physicochemical transformation of ZnO NPs underwent over time, followed by evaluating the cytotoxicity of fresh and aged NPs. We found that fresh ZnO NPs induced higher apoptosis level than their aged counterparts. Accordingly, RNA sequencing data from aged ZnO NP-treated human-hamster hybrid (A_L) cells showed that p53, PI3k-Akt, FoXO, Glutathione, ErbB, HIF-1, Oxytocin and Jak-STAT signaling pathways were enriched but no apoptosis pathway. Quantitative PCR results revealed the significantly higher mRNA level of IL1B and CD69 in fresh NP-treated groups compared to that of aged ZnO NP- and zinc chloride-treated groups. The above results indicated that the lower cytotoxicity of aged ZnO NPs is partially attributed to their reduced potency in inducing apoptosis. The transcriptional regulation of multiple signal pathways activated by aged NPs may help to build the cellular homeostasis. Taken together, our findings highlight the influence of aging (environmental transformation) process of ZnO NPs on their toxicities and biological consequences.

Design of a Zn Single-Site Curing Activator for a More Sustainable Sulfur Cross-Link Formation in Rubber

ZnO is a worldwide used activator for a rubber vulcanization process, which promotes fast curing kinetics and high cross-linking densities of rubber nanocomposites (NCs). However, its extended use together with leaching phenomena occurring during the production and life cycle of rubber products, especially tires, entails potential environmental risks, as ecotoxicity toward aquatic organisms. Pushed by this issue, a novel activator was developed, which introduces highly dispersed and active zinc species in the vulcanization process, reducing the amount of employed ZnO and keeping high the curing efficiency. The activator is constituted by Zn(II) single sites, anchored on the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) through the coordination with functionalizing amino silane groups. It behaves as a double-function material, acting at the same time as a rubber reinforcing filler and a curing activator. The higher availability and reactivity of the single-site Zn(II) centers toward curative agents impart faster kinetics and higher efficiency to the vulcanization process of silica/isoprene NCs, compared to conventionally used ZnO activators. Moreover, the NCs show a high cross-linking degree and improved dynamic mechanical properties, despite the remarkably lower amount of zinc employed than that normally used for rubber composites in tires. Finally, the structural stability of Zn(II) single sites during the curing reactions and in the final materials may represent a turning point toward the elimination of zinc leaching phenomena.

Toxicity mitigation by N-acetylcysteine and synergistic toxic effect of nano and bulk ZnO to Panagrellus redivivus

To better understand the nanosize-relevant toxic effects and underlying mechanisms, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), as a mitigation agent, an ionic form of Zn (ZnCl₂), and the binary mixture of ZnO with different particle sizes (15 nm and 140 nm), was used in toxicity assays with the nematode Panagrellus redivivus. The ZnCl₂ concentrations were applied to show the amount of dissolved Zn ions present in the test system. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) measuring method was developed to fit the used test system. Our studies have shown that NAC can mitigate the toxic effects of both studied particle sizes. In the applied concentrations, ZnCl₂ was less toxic than both of the ZnO particles. This finding indicates that not only ions and ROS produced by the dissolution are behind the toxic effects of the ZnO NPs, but also other particle size-dependent toxic effects, like the spontaneous ROS generation, are also relevant. When the two materials were applied in binary mixtures, the toxic effects increased significantly, and the dissolved zinc content and the ROS generation also increased. It is assumed that the chemical and physical properties of the materials have been mutually reinforcing to form a more reactive mixture that is more toxic to the P. redivivus test organism. Our findings demonstrate the importance of using mitigation agent and mixtures to evaluate the size-dependent toxicity of the ZnO.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles: potential effects on soil properties, crop production, food processing, and food quality

The use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) is expected to increase soil fertility, crop productivity, and food quality. However, the potential effects of ZnO NP utilization should be deeply understood. This review highlights the behavior of ZnO NPs in soil and their interactions with the soil components. The review discusses the potential effects of ZnO NPs on plants and their mechanisms of action on plants and how these mechanisms are related to their physicochemical properties. The impact of current applications of ZnO NPs in the food industry is also discussed. Based on the literature reviewed, soil properties play a vital role in dispersing, aggregation, stability, bioavailability, and transport of ZnO NPs and their release into the soil. The transfer of ZnO NPs into the soil can affect the soil components, and subsequently, the structure of plants. The toxic effects of ZnO NPs on plants and microbes are caused by various mechanisms, mainly through the generation of reactive oxygen species, lysosomal destabilization, DNA damage, and the reduction of oxidative stress through direct penetration/liberation of Zn2+ ions in plant/microbe cells. The integration of ZnO NPs in food processing improves the properties of the relative ZnO NP-based nano-sensing, active packing, and food/feed bioactive ingredients delivery systems, leading to better food quality and safety. The unregulated/unsafe discharge concentrations of ZnO NPs into the soil, edible plant tissues, and processed foods raise environmental/safety concerns and adverse effects. Therefore, the safety issues related to ZnO NP applications in the soil, plants, and food are also discussed.

Genomic Damage Induced in Nicotiana tabacum L. Plants by Colloidal Solution with Silver and Gold Nanoparticles

Tobacco seedlings (Nicotiana tabacum L cv. Wisconsin 38) were treated for 24 h with colloidal solution of silver and gold nanoparticles (AgNPs and AuNPs) of different size or cultivated for 8 weeks on soil polluted with these NPs. DNA damage in leaf and roots nuclei was evaluated by the comet assay. AgNPs of the size 22–25 nm at concentrations higher than 50 mg·L⁻¹ significantly increased the tail moments (TM) values in leaf nuclei compared to the negative control. Ag nanoparticles of smaller size 12–15 nm caused a slight increase in tail moment without significant difference from the negative control. The opposite effect of AgNPs was observed on roots. The increasing tail moment was registered for smaller NPs. Similar results were observed for AuNPs at a concentration of 100 mg·L⁻¹. DNA damaging effects after growing tobacco plants for 8 weeks in soil polluted with AgNPs and AuNPs of different size and concentrations were observed. While lower concentrations of both types of particles had no effect on the integrity of DNA, concentration of 30 mg·kg⁻¹ of AgNPs caused significant DNA damage in leaves of tobacco plants. AuNPs had no effect even at the highest concentration. The content of Ag was determined by ICP–MS in above-ground part of plants (leaves) after 8 weeks of growth in soil with 30 mg·kg⁻¹. AgNPs and was 2.720 ± 0.408 µg·g⁻¹. Long term effect is much less harmful probably due to the plant restoration capability.

The Efficacy of Green Synthesized Nanosilver in Reducing the Incidence of Post-Harvest Apple Fruit Brown Rot

This study aimed to green synthesize nanosilver (AgNPs) using black tea extract and use it as a nanopreservative to increase the shelf life of stored apple fruits. Ultraviolet visible absorption (UV-vis) analysis of AgNPs recorded two λ max values at 260 and 452 nm. Transmission electron microscope and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that AgNPs are spherical in shape and have an average size of 20 and 170.6 nm, respectively, with a zeta potential of -20.06 mV. An in vitro assay confirmed the antifungal potential of AgNPs against M. fructigena when applied at 200 mg/L and preincubated for 4 days, reducing the radial growth by 96.1%. At the same dose and preincubation period, AgNPs caused a significant reduction in the diameter and fresh weight of brown rotted lesions in apple fruits artificially coinoculated with the pathogen by 77.4% and 84.4%, respectively. AgNPs caused the leakage of proteins and DNA from M. fructigena conidia and did not express cytotoxicity against the human HaCaT cell lines. Accordingly, green synthesized AgNPs are eco-friendly and economical and do not pose harm to human health; thus, they could be used as an effective nanopreservative in apple fruit stores to reduce the incidence of brown rot disease.

In vitro bio-interaction responses and hemocompatibility of nano-based linear low-density polyethylene polymer embedded with heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites for biomedical applications

An innovative nano-base polymer that scavenges radicals and reactive oxygen species exhibits potential antibacterial properties, which are crucial in the biomedical field, particularly in reducing nosocomial infections. However, the safety of this nano-based polymer, which has direct contact with the human system, has not been fully understood. The present study investigated the cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility responses of linear low-density polyethylene polymer (LLDPE) embedded with difference ratios of heterogeneous TiO₂/ZnO nanocomposites. Exposure of the blood and fibroblast cells to LLDPE/100Z and LLDPE/25T75Z/10% nanocomposite films for 48 and 72 h decreased their viability by less than 40%, compared with LLDPE, LLDPE/100T and LLDPE/25T75Z/5% nanocomposite films. It also presented possible cellular damage and cytotoxicity, which was supported by the findings from the significant release of extracellular lactate dehydrogenase profiles and cell survival assay Further observation using an electron microscope revealed that LLDPE films with heterogeneous 25T75Z/5% promoted cell adhesion. Moreover, no hemolysis was detected in all ratios of heterogeneous TiO₂/ZnO nanocomposite in LLDPE film as it was less than 0.2%, suggesting that these materials were hemocompatible. This study on LLDPE film with heterogeneous TiO₂/ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated favorable biocompatible properties that were significant for advanced biomedical polymer application in a hospital setting.

Combined Antioxidant-Antibiotic Treatment for Effectively Healing Infected Diabetic Wounds Based on Polymer Vesicles

Infected diabetic wounds are difficult to heal due to high reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentrations and recurrent infections. Such wounds can easily deteriorate into a diabetic ulcer, a chronic diabetic complication with a very high mortality rate. Herein, we propose a combined antioxidant-antibiotic therapy based on poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(glutamic acid) polymer vesicle to treat infected diabetic wounds. This was realized by in situ decoration of stable, well-dispersed ceria nanoparticles onto ciprofloxacin (CIP)-loaded polymer vesicles. These resulting CIP-loaded and ceria-decorated polymer vesicles (CIP-Ceria-PVs) exhibited high superoxide dismutase mimetic activity to inhibit superoxide free radicals (the inhibition rate reached ∼50% at an extremely low cerium concentration of 1.25 μg/mL). When the cerium content is in the range of 5-20 μg/mL, the CIP-Ceria-PVs showed the highest protective capability to normal L02 cells from damage of superoxide free radicals. In addition, the CIP-Ceria-PVs exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity (the dosage of CIP in CIP-Ceria-PVs was reduced by 25-50% compared to free CIP). In vivo treatment of infected diabetic wounds was performed on a diabetic mice model. The CIP-Ceria-PVs could effectively cure infected diabetic wounds within 14 days. Overall, a combined antioxidant-antibiotic therapy was proposed by introducing ceria nanoparticles and CIP into polymer vesicles for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds.

Biogenic copper nanoparticles from Avicennia marina leaves: Impact on seed germination, detoxification enzymes, chlorophyll content and uptake by wheat seedlings

Biogenic copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were synthesized using the aqueous crude extract of mangrove leaves, Avicennia marina (CE). GC-MS metabolite profiling of CE showed that their carbohydrates are mainly composed of D-mannose (29.21%), D-fructose, (18.51%), L-sorbose (12.91%), D-galactose (5.47%) and D-Talose (5.21%). Ultra-fine nanoparticles of 11.60 ±4.65 nm comprising Cu2O and Cu(OH)2 species were obtained with a carbohydrate and phenolic content of 35.6±3.2% and 3.13±0.05 mgGA/g, respectively. The impact of the biogenic Cu NPs on wheat seedling growth was dose-dependent. Upon treatment with 0.06 mg/mL of Cu NPs, the growth was promoted by 172.78 ± 23.11 and 215.94 ± 37.76% for wheat root and shoot, respectively. However, the lowest relative growth % of 81.94 ± 11.70 and 72.46 ± 18.78% were recorded for wheat root and shoot, respectively when applying 0.43 mg/mL of Cu NPs. At this concentration, peroxidase activity (POX) of the germinated wheat seeds also decreased, while ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities increased. Higher uptake of copper was observed in the root relative to the shoot implying the accumulation of the nanoparticles in the former. The uptake was also higher than that of the commercial Cu NPs, which showed an insignificant effect on the seedling growth. By treating the wheat leaves in foliar application with 0.06 mg/mL of Cu NPs, their contents of Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll were enhanced after 21 days of application. Meanwhile, the high concentration (0.43 mg/mL) of Cu NPs was the most effective in reducing the leaf content of chlorophyll (a, b, and total) after the same time of application. The findings of this study manifest the potential of utilizing controlled doses of the prepared biogenic Cu NPs for inhibition or stimulation of seedling growth.

Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Properties of ZnO Nanoparticles Obtained from Chemical versus Saponaria officinalis Extract-Mediated Synthesis

In the present work, the properties of ZnO nanoparticles obtained using an eco-friendly synthesis (biomediated methods in microwave irradiation) were studied. Saponaria officinalis extracts were used as both reducing and capping agents in the green nanochemistry synthesis of ZnO. Inorganic zinc oxide nanopowders were successfully prepared by a modified hydrothermal method and plant extract-mediated method. The influence of microwave irradiation was studied in both cases. The size, composition, crystallinity and morphology of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated using dynamic light scattering (DLS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM-EDX microscopy. Tunings of the nanochemistry reaction conditions (Zn precursor, structuring agent), ZnO NPs with various shapes were obtained, from quasi-spherical to flower-like. The optical properties and photocatalytic activity (degradation of methylene blue as model compound) were also investigated. ZnO nanopowders' antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains to evidence the influence of the vegetal extract-mediated synthesis on the biological activity.

Resistance of multidrug resistant Escherichia coli to environmental nanoscale TiO2 and ZnO

Excessive production and utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) at industrial and household levels releases substantial quantities of NPs into the environment. These can be harmful to different types of organisms and cause adverse effects on ecosystems. Purchased TiO₂ and ZnO NPs were characterized via XRD, XPS, FESEM, and Zeta potential. This study elucidates how multidrug resistant Escherichia coli LM13, which was recovered from livestock manure, counteracts the antibacterial activities of TiO₂ and ZnO NPs to survive in the environment. E. coli ATCC25922, which is susceptible to antibiotics, was used as control. A dose-response experiment showed that the antibacterial activity of TiO₂ was lower than that of ZnO NPs and, LM13 was more resistant to NPs than ATCC25922. An AcrAB-TolC efflux pump along with its regulation genes helped LM13 to minimize NP toxicity. Flow cytometry findings also indicated that the intensity of the side-scatter light parameter increased with TiO₂ and ZnO NPs in a dose dependent manner, suggesting NP uptake by the both strains. The generation of reactive oxygen species in LM13 was several-fold lower than in ATCC25922, suggesting that reactive oxygen species mainly contribute to the toxicity mechanism. These results illustrate the necessity to evaluate the impacts of NPs on the survival capacity of bacteria and on the resistance genes in bacteria with higher NP resistance than NP susceptible bacteria.

Toxicity assessment of industrial engineered and airborne process-generated nanoparticles in a 3D human airway epithelial in vitro model

The advanced ceramic technology has been pointed out as a potentially relevant case of occupational exposure to nanoparticles (NP). Not only when nanoscale powders are being used for production, but also in the high-temperature processing of ceramic materials there is also a high potential for NP release into the workplace environment. In vitro toxicity of engineered NP (ENP) [antimony tin oxide (Sb₂O₃•SnO₂; ATO); zirconium oxide (ZrO₂)], as well as process-generated NP (PGNP), and fine particles (PGFP), was assessed in MucilAir™ cultures at air-liquid interface (ALI). Cultures were exposed during three consecutive days to varying doses of the aerosolized NP. General cytotoxicity [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, WST-1 metabolization], (oxidative) DNA damage, and the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators (IL-8 and MCP-1) were assessed. Data revealed that ENP (5.56 µg ATO/cm² and 10.98 µg ZrO₂/cm²) only caused mild cytotoxicity at early timepoints (24 h), whereas cells seemed to recover quickly since no significant changes in cytotoxicity were observed at late timepoints (72 h). No meaningful effects of the ENP were observed regarding DNA damage and cytokine levels. PGFP affected cell viability at dose levels as low as ∼9 µg/cm², which was not seen for PGNP. However, exposure to PGNP (∼4.5 µg/cm²) caused an increase in oxidative DNA damage. These results indicated that PGFP and PGNP exhibit higher toxicity potential than ENP in mass per area unit. However, the presence of a mucociliary apparatus, as it occurs in vivo as a defense mechanism, seems to considerably attenuate the observed toxic effects. Our findings highlight the potential hazard associated with exposure to incidental NP in industrial settings.

Update on Nanoparticle-Based Drug Delivery System for Anti-inflammatory Treatment

Nanobiotechnology plays an important role in drug delivery, and various kinds of nanoparticles have demonstrated new properties, which may provide opportunities in clinical treatment. Nanoparticle-mediated drug delivery systems have been used in anti-inflammatory therapies. Diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis have been widely impacted by the pathogenesis of inflammation. Efficient delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce medical dosage and improve therapeutic effect. In this review, we discuss nanoparticles with potential anti-inflammatory activity, and we present a future perspective regarding the application of nanomedicine in inflammatory diseases.

Engineering nanoscale hierarchical morphologies and geometrical shapes for microbial inactivation in aqueous solution

Here, we study the effect of hierarchical and one-dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanorods (H-NRs) such as γ-Al₂O₃, β-MnO₂, and ZnO as microbial inhibitors on the antimicrobial efficiency in aqueous solution. These microbial inhibitors are fabricated in a diverse range of nanoscale hierarchical morphologies and geometrical shapes that have effective surface exposure, and well-defined 1D orientation. For instance, γ-Al₂O₃ H-NRs with 20 nm width and ˂0.5 μm length are grown dominantly in the [400] direction. The wurtzite structures of β-MnO₂ H-NRs with 30 nm width and 0.5-1 μm length are preferentially oriented in the [100] direction. Longitudinal H-NRs with a width of 40 nm and length of 1 μm are controlled with ZnO wurtzite structure and grown in [0001] direction. The antimicrobial efficiency of H-NRs was evaluated through experimental assays using a set of microorganisms (Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus thuriginesis, and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria. Minimal inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MIC and MBC) were determined. These 1D H-NRs exhibited antibacterial activity against all the used strains. The active surface exposure sites of H-NRs play a key role in the strong interaction with the thiol units of vital bacterial enzymes, leading to microbial inactivation. Our finding indicates that the biological effect of the H-NR surface planes on microbial inhibition is decreased in the order of [400]-γ-Al₂O₃ > [100]-β-MnO₂ > [0001]-ZnO geometrics. The lowest key values including MIC (1.146 and 0.250 μg/mL), MBC (1.146, 0.313 μg/mL), and MIC/MFC (0.375 and 0.375 μg/mL) are achieved for [400]-plane γ-Al₂O₃ surfaces when tested against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, respectively. Among the three H-NRs, the smallest diameter size and length, the largest surface area, and the active exposure [400] direction of γ-Al₂O₃ H-NRs could provide the highest microbial inactivation.

Cerium uptake, translocation and toxicity in the salt marsh halophyte Halimione portulacoides (L.), Aellen

Halimione portulacoides plants were exposed to dissolved cerium (Ce) in a hydroponic medium for five days. Ce accumulation in plants followed the metal's increase in the medium although with a very low translocation factor (TF < 0.01) between roots and shoots. Ce median concentrations in roots were 586, 988 and 1103 μg/g (dry wt.), while in shoots the median values reached 1.9, 3.5 and 10.0 μg/g (dry wt.), for plants exposed to 300, 600 and 1200 μg/L of Ce, respectively. No significant differences occurred in the length of roots and shoots among treatment groups, albeit plants exposed to the highest Ce concentration showed a clear loss of turgor pressure on the fifth day. An increase of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde levels were observed in the plant shoots at 1200 μg/L of Ce. The highest concentration also triggered an answer by the shoots' antioxidant enzymes with a decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase and an increase in peroxidase. However, no significant change in catalase activity was observed, compared to the control group, which may indicate that peroxidase played a more crucial role against the oxidative stress than catalase. Combined results indicate that H. portulacoides was actively responding to a toxic effect imposed by this higher Ce concentration. Nevertheless, changes in normal environmental conditions, may increase the bioavailability of Ce, while in areas where acid mine drainage may occur, the highest Ce concentration tested in this study may be largely exceeded, placing the sustainability of halophytes and estuarine marshes at risk.

Harmful effects of metal(loid) oxide nanoparticles

Abstract

The incorporation of nanomaterials (NMs), including metal(loid) oxide (MOx) nanoparticles (NPs), in the most diversified consumer products, has grown enormously in recent decades. Consequently, the contact between humans and these materials increased, as well as their presence in the environment. This fact has raised concerns and uncertainties about the possible risks of NMs to human health and the adverse effects on the environment. These concerns underline the need and importance of assessing its nanosecurity. The present review focuses on the main mechanisms underlying the MOx NPs toxicity, illustrated with different biological models: release of toxic ions, cellular uptake of NPs, oxidative stress, shading effect on photosynthetic microorganisms, physical restrain and damage of cell wall. Additionally, the biological models used to evaluate the potential hazardous of nanomaterials are briefly presented, with particular emphasis on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as an alternative model in nanotoxicology. An overview containing recent scientific advances on cellular responses (toxic symptoms exhibited by yeasts) resulting from the interaction with MOx NPs (inhibition of cell proliferation, cell wall damage, alteration of function and morphology of organelles, presence of oxidative stress bio-indicators, gene expression changes, genotoxicity and cell dead) is critically presented. The elucidation of the toxic modes of action of MOx NPs in yeast cells can be very useful in providing additional clues about the impact of NPs on the physiology and metabolism of the eukaryotic cell. Current and future trends of MOx NPs toxicity, regarding their possible impacts on the environment and human health, are discussed.

Extracellular myco-synthesis of nano-silver using the fermentable yeasts Pichia kudriavzeviiHA-NY2 and Saccharomyces uvarumHA-NY3, and their effective biomedical applications

The progress of nanoparticles production by eco-friendly route, with desirable chemical and physical characteristics, and their application in helpful fields is still under investigation. Therefore, this study aimed at biosynthesis, characterization, and biomedical applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using yeasts metabolite. The yeast strains, Pichia kudriavzeviiHA-NY2 and Saccharomyces uvarumHA-NY3, were used for extracellular biosynthesis of AgNPsK and AgNPsU, respectively. AgNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectrum and dynamic light scatter (DLS). TEM image showed well dispersed round and cubic regular particles with size ranges of 12.4 ± 6.02 nm for AgNPsU and 20.655 ± 9.48 nm for AgNPsK. According to DLS analysis, the mean size diameters of AgNPsU and AgNPsK were 20.3-21.5 and 29.6-30.14 nm, respectively. AgNPs showed highly significant inhibitory activity against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29213), gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27953), Candida tropicalis ATCC750, and Fusarium oxysporium NRC21. The anti-inflammatory activity of AgNPs revealed that paw edema was inhibited by the oral administration of the two biosynthesized silver-nanoparticles. In addition, they showed carrageenan activity nearest to indomethacin. All fabricated AgNPs showed a significant analgesic effect after one hour of administration, which was comparable to aspirin. Further, both AgNPsK and AgNPsU demonstrated a significant anticancer activity against HCT-116 (Colon cell line) with IC50 values 0.29, 0.24 µg ml^-1, respectively, and PC3 (Prostate cell line) with IC50 values 0.57, 0.50 µg ml^-1, respectively. No ulcerogenic effects of AgNPs were detected on the rats' stomach and it was safe on the gastric profile.

Surface Properties and Environmental Transformations Controlling the Bioaccumulation and Toxicity of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles: A Critical Review

Increasing production and utilization of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) in recent years have raised wide concerns about their toxicity. Numerous studies have been conducted to reveal the toxicity of CNPs, but the results are sometimes contradictory. In this review, the most important factors in mediating CNPs toxicity are discussed, including (1) the roles of physicochemical properties (size, morphology, agglomeration condition, surface charge, coating and surface valence state) on CNPs toxicity; (2) the phase transfer and transformation process of CNPs in various aqueous, terrestrial, and airborne environments; and (3) reductive dissolution of CNPs core and their chemical reactions with phosphate, sulfate/S^2-, and ferrous ions. The physicochemical properties play key roles in the interactions of CNPs with organisms and consequently their environmental transformations, reactivity and toxicity assessment. Also, the speciation transformations of CNPs caused by reactions with (in)organic ligands in both environmental and biological systems would further alter their fate, transport, and toxicity potential. Thus, the toxicity mechanisms are proposed based on the physical damage of direct adsorption of CNPs onto the cell membrane and chemical inhibition (including oxidative stress and interaction of CNPs with biomacromolecules). Finally, the current knowledge gaps and further research needs in identifying the toxicological risk factors of CNPs under realistic environmental conditions are highlighted, which might improve predictions about their potential environmental influences. This review aims to provide new insights into cost-effectiveness of control options and management practices to prevent environmental risks from CNPs exposure.

Safe Nanoparticles: Are We There Yet?

The field of nanotechnology has grown over the last two decades and made the transition from the benchtop to applied technologies. Nanoscale-sized particles, or nanoparticles, have emerged as promising tools with broad applications in drug delivery, diagnostics, cosmetics and several other biological and non-biological areas. These advances lead to questions about nanoparticle safety. Despite considerable efforts to understand the toxicity and safety of these nanoparticles, many of these questions are not yet fully answered. Nevertheless, these efforts have identified several approaches to minimize and prevent nanoparticle toxicity to promote safer nanotechnology. This review summarizes our current knowledge on nanoparticles, their toxic effects, their interactions with mammalian cells and finally current approaches to minimizing their toxicity.

Nano-Fertilization as an Emerging Fertilization Technique: Why Can Modern Agriculture Benefit from Its Use?

There is a need for a more innovative fertilizer approach that can increase the productivity of agricultural systems and be more environmentally friendly than synthetic fertilizers. In this article, we reviewed the recent development and potential benefits derived from the use of nanofertilizers (NFs) in modern agriculture. NFs have the potential to promote sustainable agriculture and increase overall crop productivity, mainly by increasing the nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of field and greenhouse crops. NFs can release their nutrients at a slow and steady pace, either when applied alone or in combination with synthetic or organic fertilizers. They can release their nutrients in 40–50 days, while synthetic fertilizers do the same in 4–10 days. Moreover, NFs can increase the tolerance of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses. Here, the advantages of NFs over synthetic fertilizers, as well as the different types of macro and micro NFs, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the application of NFs in smart sustainable agriculture and the role of NFs in the mitigation of biotic and abiotic stress on plants is presented. Though NF applications may have many benefits for sustainable agriculture, there are some concerns related to the release of nanoparticles (NPs) from NFs into the environment, with the subsequent detrimental effects that this could have on both human and animal health. Future research should explore green synthesized and biosynthesized NFs, their safe use, bioavailability, and toxicity concerns.

Biomedical nanomaterials: applications, toxicological concerns, and regulatory needs

Advances in cutting-edge technologies such as nano- and biotechnology have created an opportunity for re-engineering existing materials and generating new nano-scale products that can function beyond the limits of conventional ones. While the step change in the properties and functionalities of these new materials opens up new possibilities for a broad range of applications, it also calls for structural modifications to existing safety assessment processes that are primarily focused on bulk material properties. Decades after the need to modify existing risk management practices to include nano-specific behaviors and exposure pathways was recognized, relevant policies for evaluating, and controlling health risks of nano-enabled materials is still lacking. This review provides an overview of current progress in the field of nanobiotechnology rather than intentions and aspirations, summarizes long-recognized but still unresolved issues surrounding materials safety at the nanoscale, and discusses key barriers preventing generation and integration of reliable data in bio/nano-safety domain. Particular attention is given to nanostructured materials that are commonly used in biomedical applications.

Antibacterial application and toxicity of metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are also referred to as coordination polymers, have been widely used in adsorption separation and catalysis, especially in the field of physical chemistry in the past few years, because of their unique physical structure and potential chemical properties. In recent years, particularly with the continuous expansion of the research field, deepening of research levels, and sustained advancements in science and technology, powerful and diverse MOFs that have demonstrated great biomedical application potential have been successively developed. Consequently, this study summarizes the origin, development, and common synthesis methods of MOFs, with major emphasis on their antibacterial application and safety evaluation in biomedicine.

Effects of heavy metals and metal (oxide) nanoparticles on enhanced biological phosphorus removal

With the rapid growth of economics and nanotechnology, a significant portion of the anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals and nanoparticles (NPs) enters wastewater streams and discharges to wastewater treatment plants, thereby potentially posing a risk to the bacteria that facilitate the successful operation of the enhanced biological phosphorus (P) removal (EBPR) process. Although some efforts have been made to obtain detailed insights into the effects of heavy metals and metal (oxide) nanoparticles [Me(O)NPs], many unanswered questions remain. One question is whether the toxicity of Me(O)NPs originates from the released metal ions. This review aims to holistically evaluate the effects of heavy metals and Me(O)NPs. The interactions among extracellular polymeric substances, P, and heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] are presented and discussed for the first time. The potential mechanisms of the toxicity of heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] are summarized. Additionally, mathematical models of the toxicity and removal of P, heavy metals, and Me(O)NPs are overviewed. Finally, knowledge gaps and opportunities for further study are discussed to pave the way for fully understanding the inhibition of heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] and for reducing their inhibitory effect to maximize the reliability of the EBPR process.

Plant-Derived Natural Products in Cancer Research: Extraction, Mechanism of Action, and Drug Formulation

Cancer is one of the main causes of death globally and considered as a major challenge for the public health system. The high toxicity and the lack of selectivity of conventional anticancer therapies make the search for alternative treatments a priority. In this review, we describe the main plant-derived natural products used as anticancer agents. Natural sources, extraction methods, anticancer mechanisms, clinical studies, and pharmaceutical formulation are discussed in this review. Studies covered by this review should provide a solid foundation for researchers and physicians to enhance basic and clinical research on developing alternative anticancer therapies.

A Review on Chitosan's Uses as Biomaterial: Tissue Engineering, Drug Delivery Systems and Cancer Treatment

Chitosan, derived from chitin, is a biopolymer consisting of arbitrarily distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine that exhibits outstanding properties— biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, antibacterial activity, the capacity to form films, and chelating of metal ions. Most of these peculiar properties are attributed to the presence of free protonable amino groups along the chitosan backbone, which also gives it solubility in acidic conditions. Moreover, this biopolymer can also be physically modified, thereby presenting a variety of forms to be developed. Consequently, this polysaccharide is used in various fields, such as tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and cancer treatment. In this sense, this review aims to gather the state-of-the-art concerning this polysaccharide when used as a biomaterial, providing information about its characteristics, chemical modifications, and applications. We present the most relevant and new information about this polysaccharide-based biomaterial’s applications in distinct fields and also the ability of chitosan and its various derivatives to selectively permeate through the cancer cell membranes and exhibit anticancer activity, and the possibility of adding several therapeutic metal ions as a strategy to improve the therapeutic potential of this polymer.
