Multifunctional Yolk-Shell Structured Magnetic Mesoporous Polydopamine/Carbon Microspheres for Photothermal Therapy and Heterogenous Catalysis

Yolk-shell structure with magnetic core, interior void and mesoporous polymer/carbon shell demonstrate potential applications in biocatalysis, magnetic biological separation, biomedicine, and magnetic resonance imaging due to their comprehensive benefits of magnetic and mesoporous shells. Herein, yolk-shell structured magnetic mesoporous polydopamine microspheres (Fe3O4@Void@mPDA) and the corresponding derivatives of carbon-based microspheres (Fe3O4@Void@mCN) are successfully fabricated through an interface assembly and selective etching approach. The obtained monodisperse Fe3O4@Void@mPDA microspheres consist of a magnetic core, a mesoporous polydopamine shell, and the large void formed between them, with perpendicular mesopores (5.2 nm), high surface area (303.3 m2g-1), and richness of functional groups. The Fe3O4@Void@mPDA microspheres show a remarkable inhibitory effect on tumor cells. Moreover, the Fe3O4@Void@mCN microspheres can immobilize ultrafine Au nanoparticles for hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol with superb catalytic activity and excellent magnetic reusability.

Highly Effective OER Electrocatalysts Generated from a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Including a Sulfur-Containing Linker without Doping

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different topologies formed by the self-assembly of sulfur-containing inorganic ligands, cobalt ions, and large ligands can be used to prepare electrocatalysts for water splitting in order to fully explore the advantages of MOFs in terms of structural tailoring and quantitative assembly. It is possible to avoid using an extradoped sulfur source to reduce waste as well as to disperse Co and sulfur elements evenly and controllably throughout the final material to maximize the overall synergistic effect. In this work, different kinds of bimetallic MOF materials containing sulfur can be synthesized very conveniently by using an economical and practical diffusion method. These materials are directly used as OER electrocatalysts, and the bimetallic MOFs have the best electrocatalytic performance when the ratio of Co to Fe is 6:4. The overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 was 260 mV, with a Tafel slope of 56 mV dec^-1 and good stability. It was assembled with 20% commercial Pt/C material into a two-electrode system for all-water decomposition, and the decomposition voltage at 10 mA cm^-2 was 1.81 V. From the electronic configuration microscopic point of view, the introduction of iron ions changed the original synergistic effect for Co-S-Co, which more easily led to the formation of high-valence Co³⁺ and finally produced highly active electrocatalytic sites. From a macroscopic point of view, the material produced in situ during the electrochemical reaction process not only retains the original 2D layered structure but also utilizes bubbles to produce a loose structure with defective sites. These structural features are advantageous because they provide not only an abundance of active sites and permeable channels but also the necessary interfaces and electron-transport channels for the formation of electrostatic charge-separation layers, making it easier to intercalate and delaminate the hydroxide ions. Furthermore, the changed hydroxyl ions and nitrogen and sulfur atoms on the channel surface may operate as interaction sites, increasing the surface characteristics, facilitating electron transfer, and reducing electron-transfer resistance. To summarize, the rational design of sulfur-containing layered MOF materials directly as water-splitting catalysts is a crucial next step in developing cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and low-energy-consumption electrocatalysts based on the findings of this study.

In situ preparation of a Co4S3-based electrocatalyst by taking advantage of the controllable components of metal-organic frameworks

In order to give full play to the advantages in structure tailoring and quantitative assembly, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different topological structures formed by the self-assembly of inorganic ligands containing sulfur, cobalt ions and large-size ligands were used to prepare electrocatalyst materials for hydrolysis with controllable composition and performance. According to the synthesis proposition, we can not only avoid using additional doped sulfur sources to reduce waste but also make it very convenient for Co and sulfur elements to be uniformly and controllably distributed in the whole material, and enhance the overall synergistic effects. Based on the above considerations, two-dimensional layered and three-dimensional MOFs, Co-MOF-1, and Co-MOF-2, with the same chemical compositions were utilized as the templates, and a series of Co/S-based materials with variable compositions and properties were obtained only by controlling the pyrolysis temperature. For each MOF series, it can be observed that with the increase in the pyrolysis temperature, the derivatives gradually change from Co₄S₃ to Co₉S₈ composites, which could be proven by PXRD studies. The electrocatalytic properties of two series of derivatives were also investigated, and the results indicate that the materials containing Co₄S₃ can indeed show better water-splitting performance than Co₉S₈ ones. Furthermore, the macroscopic stacking form of the MOF template also plays an important role in determining the electrocatalytic performance of the derived materials. Through an overall comparison, it is found that the electrocatalytic performance of the Co-MOF-1 series is better than that of the Co-MOF-2 series at various temperatures, which should be only caused by the natural packing modes of the pristine MOF template. For Co-MOF-1 derivatives, the retention of the two-dimensional layered structure is favorable to form an electrostatic charge separation layer and electron transport channel, which is beneficial to the intercalation and delamination of hydroxide ions, thus improving the storage capacity of materials, promoting electron transfer, and producing less electron transfer resistance. Therefore, based on the research results, the reasonable design of layered MOF materials containing the specific sulfur-containing linker as water-splitting catalysts is an applicable route for the preparation of economical, environmentally friendly, and low energy consumption electrocatalysts, which should receive increasing attention in the future.

Preparation of a reusable and pore size controllable porous polymer monolith and its catalysis of biodiesel synthesis

A sulfonated porous polymer monolith (PPM-SO3H) has been prepared via the polymerisation of styrene (St) and divinyl benzene (DVB) with organic microspheres as pore-forming agents, followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulfuric acid. It was characterized by acid-base titration in order to determine its acid density, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The PPM-SO3H showed an acid density of 1.89 mmol g-1 and pore cavities with an average diameter of 870 nm. The catalytic activity of PPM-SO3H in practical biodiesel synthesis from waste fatty acids was investigated and the main reaction parameters were optimized through orthogonal experiment. The best reaction conditions obtained for the optimization of methanol to oil ratio, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time were 1 : 1, 20%, 80 °C and 8 h, respectively. PPM-SO3H showed excellent catalytic activity. In biodiesel synthesis, the esterification rate of PPM-SO3H is 96.9%, which is much higher than that of commercial poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (esterification rate 29.0%). The PPM-SO3H can be reused several times without significant loss of catalytic activity; the esterification rate was still 90.8% after 6 cycles. The pore size of this porous polymer monolith can be controlled. The dimension and shape of this porous polymer monolith were also adjustable by choosing a suitable polymerisation container.

Trilayer Metal-Organic Frameworks as Multifunctional Electrocatalysts for Energy Conversion and Storage Applications

The need for enhanced energy storage and improved catalysts has led researchers to explore advanced functional materials for sustainable energy production and storage. Herein, we demonstrate a reductive electrosynthesis approach to prepare a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled trimetallic Fe-Co-Ni metal-organic framework (MOF) in which the metal cations within each layer or at the interface of the two layers are linked to one another by bridging 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid linkers. Tailoring catalytically active sites in an LbL fashion affords a highly porous material that exhibits excellent trifunctional electrocatalytic activities toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (η_j=10 = 116 mV), oxygen evolution reaction (η_j=10 = 254 mV), as well as oxygen reduction reaction (half-wave potential = 0.75 V vs reference hydrogen electrode) in alkaline solutions. The dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations suggest that the prominent catalytic activity of the LbL MOF toward the HER, OER, and ORR is due to the initial negative adsorption energy of water on the metal nodes and the elongated O-H bond length of the H₂O molecule. The Fe-Co-Ni MOF-based Zn-air battery exhibits a remarkable energy storage performance and excellent cycling stability of over 700 cycles that outperform the commercial noble metal benchmarks. When assembled in an asymmetric device configuration, the activated carbon||Fe-Co-Ni MOF supercapacitor provides a superb specific energy and a power of up to 56.2 W h kg^-1 and 42.2 kW kg^-1, respectively. This work offers not only a novel approach to prepare an LbL assembled multimetallic MOF but also provides a benchmark for a multifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting and Zn-air batteries.

High Energy Density in Combination with High Cycling Stability in Hybrid Supercapacitors

Hybrid supercapacitors are considered the next-generation energy storage equipment due to their superior performance. In hybrid supercapacitors, battery electrodes need to have large absolute capacities while displaying high cycling stability. However, enhancing areal capacity via decreasing the size of electrode materials results in reductions in cycling stability. To balance the capacity-stability trade-off, rationally designed proper electrode structures are in urgent need and still of great challenge. Here we report a high-capacity and high cycling stability electrode material by developing a nickel phosphate lamination structure with ultrathin nanosheets as building blocks. The nickel phosphate lamination electrode material exhibits a large specific capacity of 473.9 C g^-1 (131.6 mAh g^-1, 1053 F g^-1) at 2.0 A g^-1 and only about 21% capacity loss at 15 A g^-1 (375 C g^-1, 104.2 mAh g^-1, 833.3 F g^-1) in 6.0 M KOH. Furthermore, hybrid supercapacitors are constructed with nickel phosphate lamination and activated carbon (AC), possessing high energy density (42.1 Wh kg^-1 at 160 W kg^-1) as well as long cycle life (almost 100% capacity retention after 1000 cycles and 94% retention after 8000 cycles). The electrochemical performance of the nickel phosphate lamination structure not only is commensurate with the nanostructure or ultrathin materials carefully designed in supercapacitors but also has a longer cycling lifespan than them. The encouraging results show the great potential of this material for energy storage device applications.

Mesoporous poorly crystalline α-Fe2O3 with abundant oxygen vacancies and acid sites for ozone decomposition

In this work, mesoporous poorly crystalline hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) was prepared using mesoporous silica (KIT-6) functionalized with 3-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]propyltrimethoxysilane as a hard template (SMPC-α-Fe₂O₃). The disordered atomic arrangement structure of SMPC-α-Fe₂O₃ promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies, which was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), O₂-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), H₂-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) analyses. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) also proved that reducing the crystallinity of α-Fe₂O₃ decreased the formation energy of oxygen vacancies. TPD and in situ DRIFT analyses of NH₃ adsorption suggested that the surface acidity of SMPC-α-Fe₂O₃ was considerably higher than those of mesoporous poorly crystalline α-Fe₂O₃ (MPC-α-Fe₂O₃) and highly crystalline α-Fe₂O₃ (HC-α-Fe₂O₃). The oxygen vacancies and acid sites formed on α-Fe₂O₃ surface are beneficial for ozone (O₃) decomposition. Compared with MPC-α-Fe₂O₃ and HC-α-Fe₂O₃, SMPC-α-Fe₂O₃ exhibited a higher removal efficiency for 200-ppm O₃ at a space velocity of 720 L g^-1 h^-1 at 25 ± 2 °C under dry conditions. Additionally, in situ DRIFT and XPS results suggested that the accumulation of peroxide (O₂^2-) and the conversion of O₂^2- to lattice oxygen over the oxygen vacancies caused catalyst deactivation. However, O₂^2- could be desorbed completely by continuous N₂ purging at approximately 350 °C. This study provides significant insights for developing highly active α-Fe₂O₃ catalysts for O₃ decomposition.

Rapid synthesis of layered KxMnO2 cathodes from metal–organic frameworks for potassium-ion batteries

Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are a kind of promising cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries because of their abundant raw materials and high theoretical capacities. However, their synthesis always involves long time calcination at a high temperature, leading to low synthesis efficiency and high energy consumption. Herein, an ultra-fast synthesis strategy of Mn-based LTMOs in minutes is developed directly from alkali-transition metal based-metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The phase transformation from the MOF to LTMO is systematically investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, variable temperature optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the results reveal that the uniform distribution of K and Mn ions in MOFs promotes fast phase transformation. As a cathode in potassium-ion batteries, the fast-synthesized Mn-based LTMO demonstrates an excellent electrochemical performance with 119 mA h g⁻¹ and good cycling stability, highlighting the high production efficiency of LTMOs for future large-scale manufacturing and application of potassium-ion batteries.

Metal-Organic Framework Structure with Fe-Co-Se (MIL-88A/Fe-Co@Se) as a Cathode for Aluminum Batteries

Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries have received more and more attention because of their high theoretical energy density, high safety, and reasonable price. The cathode material of aluminum batteries is one of the key bottlenecks that limits their development. Although there are many reports on aluminum battery cathode materials, many of these reports fail to simultaneously solve the poor cycling stability and low specific capacity of aluminum batteries. Therefore, we formed YSNT@Se hybrids by compounding the MOFs─MIL-88A@Fe-Co hydroxide yolk-shell nanotubes (YSNTs) with selenium for the first time. It was finally determined that the FeSe₂ in YSNT@Se is the main redox reaction participant during charging/discharging. In the charge/discharge of YSNT@Se 500 °C, it achieved a first cycle discharge specific capacity of 292.21 mA h g^-1. After 500 cycles, the discharge capacity was 233.34 mA h g^-1 and the capacity retention rate reached 79.85%. This result proves that the redox process is highly reversible at the same time. This work makes it possible for aluminum batteries to have a high cycling performance and a high capacity and broadens the research direction of cathode materials for aluminum batteries.

A Redox-active Microporous Organosiloxane Containing a Stable Neutral Radical, Trioxotriangulene

A new silyl-substituted trioxotriangulene ( TOT ) neutral radical and corresponding porous organosiloxanes (POSs) were synthesized. The neutral radical exhibited a peculiarly high stability and formed a diamagnetic π-dimer characteristic to TOT neutral radicals stabilized by the strong multiple SOMO-SOMO interaction in both solution and solid states. POSs including TOT units within the organosiloxane-wall were prepared by polycondensation of the silyl groups, and formed microporous structures with ~1 nm-size diameters. Redox ability of TOT units in the POS was demonstrated by the treatment of oxidant/reductant in heterogeneous suspension condition, where the TOT units were reversibly converted between reduced and neutral radical species. Furthermore, the solid-state electrochemical measurements of the POS revealed the reversible multi-stage redox ability of TOT units involving polyanionic species within the organosiloxane-wall.

Recent advances in luminescent metal-organic frameworks and their photonic applications

In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been attracting ever more interest owing to their fascinating structures and widespread applications. Among the optoelectronic materials, luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) have become one of the most attractive candidates in the fields of optics and photonics thanks to the unique characteristics of their frameworks. Luminescence from MOFs can originate from either the frameworks, mainly including organic linkers and metal ions, or the encapsulated guests, such as dyes, perovskites, and carbon dots. Here, we systematically review the recent progress in LMOFs, with an emphasis on the relationships between their structures and emission behaviour. On this basis, we comprehensively discuss the research progress and applications of multicolour emission from homogeneous and heterogeneous structures, host-guest hybrid lasers, and pure MOF lasers based on optically excited LMOFs in the field of micro/nanophotonics. We also highlight recent developments in other types of luminescence, such as electroluminescence and chemiluminescence, from LMOFs. Future perspectives and challenges for LMOFs are provided to give an outlook of this emerging field. We anticipate that this article will promote the development of MOF-based functional materials with desired performance towards robust optoelectronic applications.

Mo-doped Co3O4 ultrathin nanosheet arrays anchored on nickel foam as a bi-functional electrode for supercapacitor and overall water splitting

Simple preparation, favorable price and environmental protection have been a long-term challenge in the field of electrochemistry. Herein, we studied and prepared a bifunctional Mo-doped Co₃O₄ ultrathin nanosheets, which has been validated as an effective binder-free electrode material for electrocatalytic water splitting and supercapacitors. The material has a large specific surface area, high electrical conductivity and exposure to more active sites, breaking down the limited performance and range of use of transition metal oxides. Benefiting from intriguing ultrathin property and conductivity, OER and HER process of 0.4Mo-Co₃O₄ have a small Tafel slope of 83.7 and 98 mV dec^-1, respectively. The current density at 10 mA cm^-2 show a low overpotential of 315 and 79 mV and significant stability. The water electrolytic device requires a potential of 1.64 V to reach 10 mA cm^-2, and the potential change is negligible after 12 h of continuous electrolysis. In addition, the manifest improved electrochemical performance of 0.3Mo-Co₃O₄ as supercapacitor electrode material shows high areal capacitance 2815 mF cm^-2 at 1 mA cm^-2, excellent rate performance (85% at 10 mA cm^-2) and retains 90% of the initial capacitance by cycling 5000 at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Moreover, 0.3Mo-Co₃O₄||0.3Mo-Co₃O₄ symmetrical supercapacitor has a maximum volumetric energy density of 1.25 mW h cm^-3 at a power density of 7.1 mW cm^-3 and superior cycle life. The influence of doping on electrochemical performance was studied by changing the content of doped metal ions, which is of great significance for the exploration of supercapacitor and electrocatalytic hydrolysis of bifunctional electrode materials.

Dual-emission 3D supramolecular framework hydrogel beads: highly selective detection of antibiotics and mechanism research

Ratiometric fluorescent probes based on coordination polymers (CPs) have been widely applied in optical applications. Therefore, it is very important to develop a dual-emitting gel material based on coordination polymers for specific recognition of molecules. Cu-atda (H2atda = 3,3'-(4-amino-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diyl) dibenzoic acid) is synthesized with a porous structure and a large number of amino sites exposed on the surface, which can be regarded as a carrier for fluorescent molecules and well disperse in the SA hydrogel network. A dual-emission Eu3+ functionalized CP hydrogel bead (9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA, 9A = 9-anthraldehyde and SA = sodium alginate) is successfully prepared, which presents ratiometric fluorescence detection of flumequine with a low detection limit (48 nM) and high selectivity. Furthermore, it also displays an excellent fluorescence quenching effect on nitrofuran antibiotics, exhibiting a dual functional performance. In addition, the fluorescence response mechanisms of flumequine and nitrofuran antibiotics are discussed in depth. As a portable material, visualization 9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA beads provide an extensive and convenient application prospect for real-time monitoring of antibiotics in the water environment.

Rational Design and General Synthesis of Multimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Nano-Octahedra for Enhanced Li-S Battery

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which consist of central metal nodes and organic linkers, constitute a fast growing class of crystalline porous materials with excellent application potential. Herein, a series of Mn-based multimetallic MOF (bimetallic and trimetallic MIL-100) nano-octahedra are prepared by a facile one-pot synthetic strategy. The types and proportions of the incorporated elements can be tuned while retaining the original topological structure. The introduction of other metal ions is verified at the atomic level by combining X-ray absorption fine structure experiments and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, these multimetallic Mn-based MIL-100 nano-octahedra are utilized as sulfur hosts to prepare cathodes for Li-S batteries. The MnNi-MIL-100@S cathode exhibits the best Li-S battery performance among all reported MIL-100@S composite cathode materials, with a reversible capacity of ≈708.8 mAh g^-1 after 200 cycles. The synthetic strategy described herein is utilized to incorporate metal ions into the MOF architecture, of which the parent monometallic MOF nano-octahedra cannot be prepared directly, thus rationally generating novel multimetallic MOFs. Importantly, the strategy also allows for the general synthesis and study of various micro-/nanoscale MOFs in the energy storage field.

Spray drying induced engineering a hierarchical reduced graphene oxide supported heterogeneous Tin dioxide and Zinc oxide for Lithium-ion storage

In this work, a hierarchical reduced graphene oxide (RGO) supportive matrix consisting of both larger two-dimensional RGO sheets and smaller three-dimensional RGO spheres was engineered with ZnO and SnO₂ nanoparticles immobilized. The ZnO and SnO₂ nanocrystals with controlled size were in sequence engineered on the surface of the RGO sheets during the deoxygenation of graphene oxide sample (GO), where the zinc-containing ZIF-8 sample and metal tin foil were used as precursors for ZnO and SnO₂, respectively. After a spray drying treatment and calcination, the final ZnO@SnO₂/RGO-H sample was obtained, which delivered an outstanding specific capacity of 982 mAh·g^-1 under a high current density of 1000 mA·g^-1 after 450 cycles. Benefitting from the unique hierarchical structure, the mechanical strength, ionic and electric conductivities of the ZnO@SnO₂/RGO-H sample have been simultaneously promoted. The joint contributions from pseudocapacitive and battery behaviors in lithium-ion storage processes bring in both large specific capacity and good rate capability. The industrially mature spray drying method for synthesizing RGO based hierarchical products can be further developed for wider applications.

Semiconductive coordination polymers with continuous π-π interactions and defined crystal structures

Two semiconductive coordination polymers based on a chelating redox-active ligand were synthesized and structurally characterized. Strong and continuous intermolecular π-π interactions are likely the reason for moderate electrical conductivity of about 10^-5 S m^-1 in these materials. The results of DFT calculations indicate that the continuous π-π stacking structure contributes to the orbital overlap and thus improves charge transport performance.

Nanostructured Metal Borides for Energy-Related Electrocatalysis: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

The discovery of durable, active, and affordable electrocatalysts for energy-related catalytic applications plays a crucial role in the advancement of energy conversion and storage technologies to achieve a sustainable energy future. Transition metal borides (TMBs), with variable compositions and structures, present a number of interesting features including coordinated electronic structures, high conductivity, abundant natural reserves, and configurable physicochemical properties. Therefore, TMBs provide a wide range of opportunities for the development of multifunctional catalysts with high performance and long durability. This review first summarizes the typical structural and electronic features of TMBs. Subsequently, the various synthetic methods used thus far to prepare nanostructured TMBs are listed. Furthermore, advances in emerging TMB-catalyzed reactions (both theoretical and experimental) are highlighted, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction, the oxygen reduction reaction, the carbon dioxide reduction reaction, the nitrogen reduction reaction, the methanol oxidation reaction, and the formic acid oxidation reaction. Finally, challenges facing the development of TMB electrocatalysts are discussed, with focus on synthesis and energy-related catalytic applications, and some potential strategies/perspectives are suggested as well, which will profit the design of more efficient TMB materials for application in future energy conversion and storage devices.

Metal-Organic Framework Derived Ultrafine Sb@Porous Carbon Octahedron via In Situ Substitution for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Alloying-type anode materials are regarded as promising alternatives beyond intercalation-type carbonaceous materials for sodium storage owing to the high specific capacities. The rapid capacity decay arising from the huge volume change during Na⁺-ion insertion/extraction, however, impedes the practical application. Herein, we report an ultrafine antimony embedded in a porous carbon nanocomposite (Sb@PC) synthesized via facile in situ substitution of the Cu nanoparticles in a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived octahedron carbon framework for sodium storage. The Sb@PC composite displays an appropriate redox potential (0.5-0.8 V vs Na/Na⁺) and excellent specific capacities of 634.6, 474.5, and 451.9 mAh g^-1 at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 A g^-1 after 200, 500, and 250 cycles, respectively. Such superior sodium storage performance is primarily ascribed to the MOF-derived three-dimensional porous carbon framework and ultrafine Sb nanoparticles, which not only provides a penetrating network for rapid transfer of charge carriers but also alleviates the agglomeration and volume expansion of Sb during cycling. Ex situ X-ray diffraction and in situ Raman analysis clearly reveal a five-stage reaction mechanism during sodiation and desodiation and demonstrate the excellent reversibility of Sb@PC for sodium storage. Furthermore, post-mortem analysis reveals that the robust structural integrity of Sb@PC can withstand continuous Na⁺-ion insertion/extraction. This work may provide insight into the effective design of high-capacity alloying-type anode materials for advanced secondary batteries.

Discharge-Induced Enhancement of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The fundamental understanding of the surface reconstruction induced by the applied potential is of great significance for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we show that a previously overlooked discharge current in the low applied potential region also leads to in situ electrochemical activation of a nitrogen-doped nickel oxyhydroxide surface. We exploit the fact that doping of heteroatoms weakens the surface structure, and hence, a weak discharge current originating from the capacitive nature of nickel oxyhydroxide has a strong structure-reforming ability to promote the formation of nitrogen and oxygen vacancies. The current density at 1.4 V (vs. Hg/HgO) can dramatically increase by as much as 31.3 % after discharge in the low applied potential region. This work provides insight into in situ enhancement of the OER and suggests that the low applied potential region must be a primary consideration in evaluating the origin of the activity of electrocatalysts.

Progress and Perspectives on Covalent-organic Frameworks (COFs) and Composites for Various Energy Applications

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), being a new member of the crystalline porous materials family, have emerged as important materials for energy storage/conversion/generation devices. They possess high surface areas, ordered micro/mesopores, designable structures and an ability to precisely control electro-active groups in their pores, which broaden their application window. Thanks to their low weight density, long range crystallinity, reticular nature and tunable synthesis approach towards two and three dimensional (2D and 3D) networks, they have been found suitable for a range of challenging electrochemical applications. Our review focuses on the progress made on the design, synthesis and structure of COFs and their composites for various energy applications, such as metal-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water-splitting and solar cells. Additionally, attempts have been made to correlate the structural and mechanistic characteristics of COFs with their applications.

Common Strategy: Mounting the Rod-like Ni-Based MOF on Hydrangea-Shaped Nickel Hydroxide for Superior Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Developing efficient metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysts with improvable activity and persistence toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is attracting great research attention but still remains an enormous challenge. Herein, a facile strategy, hydrangea-shaped nickel hydroxide template-directed synthesis of the hierarchically structured Ni-MOF on the Ni(OH)₂ heterocomposite (denoted as Ni-Ni) for efficient MOR, is developed. The unique hierarchical structure and synergistic effect of the heterocomposite afford more exposed active sites, a facile ion diffusion path, and improved conductivity, favorable for improving MOR catalytic performance. Remarkably, the optimized Ni-Ni-2 material delivers an excellent activity with a high peak current density (24.6 mA cm^-2). Furthermore, to prove the universality of this strategy, Ni_xCu_1-x(OH)₂ isometallic hydroxide was used as the precursor, and a series of MOF-74/Cu_xNi_1-x(OH)₂ (denoted as Ni-NiCu) heterogeneous materials have been prepared and could be used as an effective electrocatalyst to catalyze MOR. The results indicate that this strategy can be used in the synthesis of other new composite materials with specific hierarchical structures for a more efficient electrocatalytic system.

2D Redox-Active Covalent Organic Frameworks for Supercapacitors: Design, Synthesis, and Challenges

Due to the tunable skeletons, variable pore environments, and predesignable structures, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be served as a versatile platform to tailor redox activities for efficient energy storage. Redox-active COFs with specific functional groups can not only promote high-speed mass transport in the permanently open channels, but also provide dense active sites for reversible redox reactions so as to efficiently adsorb the electrolyte ions, thus becoming emerging and promising electroactive materials. This review summarizes the design principles and synthetic methods of redox-active COFs, with a focus on surveying the representative advances in supercapacitors. The key progress, major challenges, and future directions in this promising field are highlighted as well.

Crystalline Porous Materials for Nonlinear Optics

Crystalline porous materials have been extensively explored for wide applications in many fields including nonlinear optics (NLO) for frequency doubling, two-photon absorption/emission, optical limiting effect, photoelectric conversion, and biological imaging. The structural diversity and flexibility of the crystalline porous materials such as the metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and polyoxometalates provide numerous opportunities to orderly organize the dipolar chromophores and to systemically modify the type and concentration of these dipolar chromophores in the confined spaces, which are highly desirable for NLO. Here, the recent advances in the crystalline porous NLO materials are discussed. The second-order NLO of crystalline porous materials have been mainly devoted to the chiral and achiral structures, while the third-order NLO crystalline porous materials have been categorized into pure organic and hybrid organic/inorganic materials. Some representative properties and applications of these crystalline porous materials in the NLO regime are highlighted. The future perspective of challenges as well as the potential research directions of crystalline porous materials have been also proposed.

Incorporation of Active Metal Species in Crystalline Porous Materials for Highly Efficient Synergetic Catalysis

The design and development of efficient catalytic materials with synergistic catalytic sites always has long been known to be a thrilling and very dynamic research field. Crystalline porous materials (CPMs) mainly including metal-organic frameworks and zeolites with high scientific and industrial impact have recently been the subject of extensive research due to their essential role in modern chemical industrial processes. The rational incorporation of guest species in CPMs can synergize the respective strengths of these components and allow them to collaborate with each other for synergistic catalysis, leading to enhanced catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in a broad range of catalytic processes. In this review, the recent advances in the development of CPMs-confined active metal species, including metal nanoparticles, metal/metal oxides heteroparticles, metal oxide, subnanometric metal clusters, and polyoxometalates, for heterogeneous catalysis, with a particular focus on synergistic effects between active components that result in an enhanced performance are highlighted. Insights into catalysts design strategies, host-guest interactions, and structure-property relationships have been illustrated in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and possible development directions in CPMs-based encapsulation-structured synergistic catalysts are discussed.

MOFs-Derived Carbon-Based Metal Catalysts for Energy-Related Electrocatalysis

Electrochemical devices, as renewable and clean energy systems, display a great potential to meet the sustainable development in the future. However, well-designed and highly efficient electrocatalysts are the technological dilemmas that retard their practical applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived electrocatalysts exhibit tunable structure and intriguing activity and have received intensive investigation in recent years. In this review, the recent progress of MOFs-derived carbon-based single atoms (SAs) and metal nanoparticles (NPs) catalysts for energy-related electrocatalysis is summarized. The effects of synthesis strategy, coordination environment, morphology, and composition on the catalytic activity are highlighted. Furthermore, these SAs and metal NPs catalysts for the applications of electrocatalysis (hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, and nitrogen reduction reaction) are overviewed. Finally, some current challenges and foresighted ideas for MOFs-derived carbon-based metal electrocatalysts are presented.

Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives: Designing Principles and Advances toward Advanced Cathode Materials for Alkali Metal Ion Batteries

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have attracted enormous attention in the field of energy storage, due to their high specific surface area, tunable structure, highly ordered pores, and uniform metal sites. Compared with the wide research of MOFs and their related materials on anode materials for alkali metal ion batteries, few works are on cathode materials. In this review, design principles for promoting the electrochemical performance of MOF-related materials in terms of component/structure design, composite fabrication, and morphology engineering are presented. By summarizing the advancement of MOFs and their derivatives, Prussian blue and its analogs, and MOF surface coating, challenges and opportunities for future outlooks of MOF-related cathode materials are discussed.

Reversible formation of coordination bonds in Sn-based metal-organic frameworks for high-performance lithium storage

Sn-based compounds with buffer matrixes possessing high theoretical capacity, low working voltage, and alleviation of the volume expansion of Sn are ideal materials for lithium storage. However, it is challenging to confine well-dispersed Sn within a lithium active matrix because low-melting-point Sn tends to agglomerate. Here, we apply a metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry between Sn-nodes and lithium active ligands to create two Sn-based MOFs comprising Sn₂(dobdc) and Sn₂(dobpdc) with extended ligands from H₄dobdc (2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate acid) to H₄dobpdc (4,4'-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate acid) with molecule-level homodispersion of Sn in organic matrixes for lithium storage. The enhanced utilization of active sites and reaction kinetics are achieved by the isoreticular expansion of the organic linkers. The reversible formation of coordination bonds during lithium storage processes is revealed by X-ray absorption fine structure characterization, providing an in-depth understanding of the lithium storage mechanism in coordination compounds.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution by Hierarchically Structured Cobalt-Iron Composites

The development of scalable routes to highly active and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant materials is crucial for post-fossil fuel energy schemes. Here, we demonstrate how commercial copper foam electrodes can be functionalized for water oxidation using a facile electrodeposition process. The resulting composite electrode features hierarchically structured cobalt-iron-based catalyst particles, which offer channel-like structures for the transport of electrolyte and release of oxygen gas bubbles. We report high electrocatalytic OER performance as demonstrated by high current densities at low overpotentials (293 mV at j = 50 mA cm^-2) and long-term stability under technologically relevant alkaline conditions (>24 h in 1.0 M aqueous KOH).

Polyoxometalate-Templated Cobalt-Resorcin[4]arene Frameworks: Tunable Structure and Lithium-Ion Battery Performance

By employing a bowl-like tetra(benzimidazole)resorcin[4]arene (TBR4A) ligand, two new polyoxometalate-templated metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs), [Co₈Cl₁₄(TBR4A)₆]·3[H_3.3SiW₁₂O₄₀]·10DMF·11EtOH·20H₂O (1) and [Co₃Cl₂(TBR4A)₂(DMF)₄]·[SiW₁₂O₄₀]·2EtOH·3H₂O (2), have been prepared under solvothermal conditions (DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide). 1 shows a 2D cationic layer, whereas 2 exhibits a 3D framework. Remarkably, the Keggin POMs in 1 and 2 were located in the cavities formed by two bowl-like resorcin[4]arenes in sandwich fashions. Their framework structures were highly dependent on the coordination modes of the TBR4A ligands. To increase the conductivity of POMOFs, the samples of 1 and 2 were loaded on the conductive polypyrrole-reduced graphene oxide (PPy-RGO) via ball milling (1@PG and 2@PG). Then, the obtained composites experienced calcination at a proper temperature to produce 1@PG-A and 2@PG-A. The resulting 1@PG-A and 2@PG-A composites, with improved conductivities, uniform sizes and micropores, exhibited promising electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries. We herein proposed a size-controlled route for the rational fabrication of functional POMOFs and their usage in energy fields.

A Co-MOF-derived Co9S8@NS-C electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

The exploitation of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts has become increasingly urgent and imperative; however, it is also challenging for high-performance sustainable clean energy applications. Herein, novel Co9S8 nanoparticles embedded in a porous N,S-dual doped carbon composite (abbr. Co9S8@NS-C-900) were fabricated by the pyrolysis of a single crystal Co-MOF assisted with thiourea. Due to the synergistic benefit of combining Co9S8 nanoparticles with N,S-dual doped carbon, the composite showed efficient HER electrocatalytic activities and long-term durability in an alkaline solution. It shows a small overpotential of -86.4 mV at a current density of 10.0 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 81.1 mV dec-1, and a large exchange current density (J 0) of 0.40 mA cm-2, which are comparable to those of Pt/C. More importantly, due to the protection of Co9S8 nanoparticles by the N,S-dual doped carbon shell, the Co9S8@NS-C-900 catalyst displays excellent long-term durability. There is almost no decay in HER activities after 1000 potential cycles or it retains 99.5% of the initial current after 48 h.

Recent Progress of Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthesis and Battery Applications

As one type of promising inorganic-organic hybrid crystal material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread attention in many potential fields, particularly in energy storage and conversion. Recently, effective strategies have been developed to construct uniform nanoscale MOFs (NMOFs), which not only retain inherent advantages of MOFs but also develop some improved superiorities, including shorter diffusion pathway for guest transportation and more accessible active sites for surface adsorption and reaction. Additonally, their nanometer size provides more opportunity for post-functionalization and hybridization. In this review, recent progress on the preparation of NMOFs is summarized, primarily through bottom-up strategies including reaction parameter- and coordination-assisted synthesis, and top-down strategies such as liquid exfoliation and salt-template confinement. Additionally, recent applications of NMOFs in batteries as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes is discussed. Finally, some important issues concerning the fabrication and application are emphasized, which should be paid attention in future.
