Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element required for seleno-protein synthesis in many eukaryotic cells excluding higher plants. However, a substantial fraction of organically bound selenide in human nutrition is directly or indirectly derived from plants, which assimilate inorganic selenium into organic seleno-compounds. In humans, selenium deficiency is associated with several health disorders Despite its importance for human health, selenium assimilation and metabolism is barely understood in plants. Here, we analyzed the impact of the two dominant forms of soil-available selenium, selenite and selenate, on plant development and selenium partitioning in plants. We found that the reference plant Arabidopsis thaliana discriminated between selenate and selenite application. In contrast to selenite, selenate was predominantly deposited in leaves. This explicit deposition of selenate caused chlorosis and impaired plant morphology, which was not observed upon selenite application. However, only selenate triggered the accumulation of the macronutrient sulfur, the sister element of selenium in the oxygen group. To understand the oxidation state-specific toxicity mechanisms for selenium in plants, we quantified the impact of selenate and selenite on the redox environment in the plastids and the cytosol in a time-resolved manner. Surprisingly, we found that selenite first caused the oxidation of the plastid-localized glutathione pool and had a marginal impact on the redox state of the cytosolic glutathione pool, specifically in roots. In contrast, selenate application caused more vigorous oxidation of the cytosolic glutathione pool but also impaired the plastidic redox environment. In agreement with the predominant deposition in leaves, the selenate-induced oxidation of both glutathione pools was more pronounced in leaves than in roots. Our results demonstrate that Se-species dependent differences in Se partitioning substantially contribute to whole plant Se toxicity and that these Se species have subcellular compartment-specific impacts on the glutathione redox buffer that correlate with toxicity symptoms.

Abstract
Cardamine violifolia is the only selenium hyperaccumulation plant found in China. It has been developed as a source of medicinal and edible products that we can consume as selenium supplements. Many planting approaches have been developed to increase the selenium content of C. violifolia for nutrient biofortification. However, the contribution of rhizosphere microbes of C. violifolia to selenium enrichment has not been investigated. In this study, four types of selenium, i.e., selenate, selenite, nanoparticles selenium from Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis-Se), and organic selenium from yeast (yeast-Se), were added to the soil that C. violifolia was grown in, respectively. Selenate led to the greatest accumulation of selenium in C. violifolia, followed by selenite, B. subtilis-Se, and yeast-Se. Except for yeast-Se, the concentration of selenium in C. violifolia positively correlated with the amount of selenium added to the soil. Furthermore, the different types of exogenous selenium exhibited distinct effects on the rhizosphere microbiome of C. violifolia. Alpha and beta diversity analyses demonstrated that rhizosphere microbiome was more obviously affected by selenium from B. subtilis and yeast than from selenate and selenite. Different microbial species were enriched in the rhizosphere of C. violifolia under various exogenous selenium treatments. B. subtilis-Se application enhanced the abundance of Leucobacter, Sporosarcina, Patulibacter, and Denitrobacter, and yeast-Se application enriched the abundance of Singulishaera, Lactobacillus, Bdellovibrio, and Bosea. Bosea and the taxon belonging to the order Solirubrobacterales were enriched in the samples with selenate and selenite addition, respectively, and the abundances of these were linearly related to the concentrations of selenate and selenite applied in the rhizosphere of C. violifolia. In summary, this study revealed the response of the rhizosphere microbiome of C. violifolia to exogenous selenium. Our findings are useful for developing suitable selenium fertilizers to increase the selenium hyperaccumulation level of this plant.

Abstract
Kale sprouts contain health-promoting compounds that could be increased by applying plant nutrients or exogenous phytohormones during pre-harvest. The effects of selenium (Se), sulfur (S), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on lutein, glucosinolate, and phenolic accumulation were assessed in kale sprouts. Red Russian and Dwarf Green kale were chamber-grown using different treatment concentrations of Se (10, 20, 40 mg/L), S (30, 60, 120 mg/L), and MeJA (25, 50, 100 µM). Sprouts were harvested every 24 h for 7 days to identify and quantify phytochemicals. The highest lutein accumulation occurred 7 days after S 120 mg/L (178%) and Se 40 mg/L (199%) treatments in Red Russian and Dwarf Green kale sprouts, respectively. MeJA treatment decreased the level of most phenolic levels, except for kaempferol and quercetin, where increases were higher than 70% for both varieties when treated with MeJA 25 µM. The most effective treatment for glucosinolate accumulation was S 120 mg/L in the Red Russian kale variety at 7 days of germination, increasing glucoraphanin (262.4%), glucoerucin (510.8%), 4-methoxy-glucobrassicin (430.7%), and glucoiberin (1150%). Results show that kales treated with Se, S, and MeJA could be used as a functional food for fresh consumption or as raw materials for different industrial applications.

Abstract
The interactions between hyperaccumulators and their associated herbivores have been mostly investigated in their natural habitats and largely ignored in the phytoremediation practice. Herein, we investigated the herbivory status of Zn/Cd-hyperaccumulating plant Sedum alfredii from both their natural habitats and their applied remediation field, and inspected the adaptive strategies of the herbivores from the perspective of their facilitative gut microbiota. Field investigations showed that snail species Bradybaena ravida was the dominant herbivore feeding on S. alfredii and they can be only found in sites with lower levels of heavy metals compared with the plant natural habitat. Gut microbial community was analyzed using two sequencing methods (16S rRNA and czcA-Zn/Cd resistant gene) to comparatively understand the effect of gut microbes in facilitating snail feeding on the hyperaccumulators. The results revealed significant differences in the diversity and richness between the gut microbiota of the two snail populations, which was more pronounced by the czcA sequencing method. Despite of the compositional differences, their functions seemed to converge into three categories as metal-tolerant and contaminant degraders, gut symbionts, and pathogens. Further function potentials predicted by Tax4Fun based on 16 S sequencing data were in accordance with this categorization as the most abundant metabolic pathways were two-component system and ABC transporter, which was closely related to metal stress adaptation. The prevalence of positive interactions (~80%) indicated by the co-occurrence network analysis based on czcA sequencing data in both groups of gut microbiota further suggested the facilitative effect of these metal-tolerant gut microbes in coping with the high metal diet, which ultimately assist the snails to successfully feed on S. alfredii plants and thrive. This work for the first time provides evidence that the herbivore adaptation to hyperaccumulators were also associated with their gut microbial adaptation to metals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 0.5-1 billion people worldwide face the risk of selenium (Se) deficiency because of the low Se concentration in their diets. Broccoli can accumulate Se and comprises a source of daily Se supplement for humans. Se biofortification is an effective strategy for enhancing Se content in crops. In the present study, the effects of Se yeast and selenite application on the Se content and nutrient quality of broccoli were investigated. RESULTS Broccoli growth was promoted by Se yeast but inhibited by selenite. The total Se content of broccoli florets remarkably increased with increasing exogenous Se fertilizer concentrations. The main Se species in broccoli florets were methyl-selenocysteine and selenomethionine, and their contents were significantly higher under Se yeast treatments than under selenite treatments. Se(VI) was detected only under selenite treatments. Se yeast and selenite had different influences on soluble sugar, soluble protein, vitamin C and free amino acid contents in broccoli florets. The total phenolic acid and glucosinolate contents were substantially increased by Se yeast and selenite, although the total flavonoid content was reduced by Se yeast. Tests on antioxidant enzyme activities revealed that several antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) responded to Se yeast and selenite treatments. CONCLUSION Se yeast is preferred over selenite for maximizing Se uptake and nutrient accumulation in Se-rich broccoli cultivation. However, an extremely high Se content in broccoli florets cannot be directly consumed by humans, although they can be processed into Se supplements. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Earlier studies have shown that Stanleya pinnata benefits from selenium hyperaccumulation through ecological benefits and enhanced growth. However, no investigation has assayed the effects of Se hyperaccumulation on plant fitness in the field. This research aimed to analyze how variation in Se accumulation affects S. pinnata fitness, judged from physiological and biochemical performance parameters and herbivory while growing naturally on two seleniferous sites. Natural variation in Se concentration in vegetative and reproductive tissues was determined, and correlations were explored between Se levels with fitness parameters, herbivory damage, and plant defense compounds. Leaf Se concentration varied between 13- and 55-fold in the two populations, averaging 868 and 2482 mg kg−1 dry weight (DW). Furthermore, 83% and 31% of plants from the two populations showed Se hyperaccumulator levels in leaves (>1000 mg kg−1 DW). In seeds, the Se levels varied 3−4-fold and averaged 3372 and 2267 mg kg−1 DW, well above the hyperaccumulator threshold. Plant size and reproductive parameters were not correlated with Se concentration. There was significant herbivory pressure even on the highest-Se plants, likely from Se-resistant herbivores. We conclude that the variation in Se hyperaccumulation did not appear to enhance or compromise S. pinnata fitness in seleniferous habitats within the observed Se range.

Abstract
Although the Se concentration and recovery efficiency of soybean seeds treated with selenate were ∼ 1.8 times those of the selenite treatment, the Se was mainly in the organic form of selenomethionine (>90% of total Se) irrespective of the Se source. The Se concentrations of soybean protein isolate (SPI) and glycinin (11S) were 29.1%-38.6% higher than those of soybean protein concentrate (SPC) and β-conglycinin (7S) in Se-enriched soybeans, with selenomethionine accounting for > 80% of the Se in all proteins. The content of sulfur-containing methionine in SPI and 11S markedly decreased in Se-enriched soybeans compared with the control. No significant effect of Se was observed on protein content, subunit composition, secondary structure, micromorphology, or functionality. Foliar spray of selenate provides an economical and efficient way to produce Se-enriched soybeans without affecting protein structure and functionality, where SPI and 11S display a high ability to enrich Se (mainly selenomethionine).

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element for humans, animals and microorganisms. Microbial transformations, in particular, selenium dissimilatory reduction and bioremediation applications have received increasing attention in recent years. This review focuses on multiple Se-reducing pathways under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, and the phylogenetic clustering of selenium reducing enzymes that are involved in these processes. It is emphasized that a selenium reductase may have more than one metabolic function, meanwhile, there are several Se(VI) and/or Se(IV) reduction pathways in a bacterial strain. It is noted that Se(IV)-reducing efficiency is inconsistent with Se(IV) resistance in bacteria. Moreover, we discussed the links of selenium transformations to biogeochemical cycling of other elements, roles of Se-reducing bacteria in soil, plant and digestion system, and the possibility of using functional genes involved in Se transformation as biomarker in different environments. In addition, we point out the gaps and perspectives both on Se transformation mechanisms and applications in terms of bioremediation, Se fortification or dietary supplementation.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human beings and animals. Traditional plant Se enrichment technology suffers from selenium pollution. Herein, environmentally friendly Se-agarose (Se-Agar) hybrid hydrogels are prepared by simply mixing agar with different Se species including selenocarrageenan (SeCA), selenite and Se yeast under heating and stirring for 0.5 h without any other reagent. Such Se-Agar hybrid hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility were used as natural substrates for the cultivation of Se-enriched mung bean sprouts. Compared with Se yeast, SeCA and selenite show a better Se enrichment effect on mung bean sprouts. Furthermore, the growth indices including plant weight and plant height of mung bean sprouts were investigated with different concentrations and sources of Se. Notably, the Se-Agar hybrid hydrogels could be easily regenerated and reused for multiple cycles. The results indicated that Se-Agar hybrid hydrogels as recyclable natural substrates offer a simple, sustainable and affordable strategy for plant Se enrichment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although selenium (Se) plays important roles in scavenging free radicals, alleviating oxidative stresses, and strengthening immune system, the knowledge about Se responses in bread wheat is still limited. In order to clarify the molecular mechanism of Se responses in bread wheat, 2-week-old wheat seedlings of cultivar 'Jimai22' treated with 10 μM disodium selenate (Na2SeO4) for 0, 3, and 24 h were collected and analyzed by transcriptional sequencing and tandem mass tag-based (TMT) quantitative proteomics. RESULTS At least 11,656 proteins and 133,911 genes were identified, and proteins including ATP sulfurylase (APS), cysteine synthase (CS), SeCys lyase, sulfate transporters, glutathione S-transferase (GSTs), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutaredoxins (GRXs), superoxide dismutases (SODs), catalases (CATs), heat shock proteins (HSPs), UDP-glycose flavonoid glycosyltransferases (UFGTs), sucrose-6-phosphate hydrolases (Suc-6-PHs), archaeal phosphoglucose isomerases (APGIs), malate synthases (MSs), and endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (Xyn) in Se accumulation, ROS scavenging, secondary metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism were significantly differently expressed. CONCLUSIONS This is the first complementary analyses of the transcriptome and proteome related with selenium responses in bread wheat. Our work enhances the understanding about the molecular mechanism of selenium responses in bread wheat.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) has strong mobility and could cause toxicity to plants, and selenium (Se) can effectively detoxify Cd stress. However, differences in the detoxification effects of different species and dosages of exogenous Se on Cd and its mechanism are still unclear. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different rates of selenite and selenate application on radish growth, the uptake and translocation of Cd, and the fractions of Cd transformation in native Cd-contaminated soil. Results indicated that the decrease in radish biomass in selenate treatment was significantly greater than that in selenite treatment at a high Se application rate (2.5 mg·kg-1) (p < 0.05). In contrast to selenite treatments, the application of selenate significantly increased the translocation of Cd from radish roots to shoots (p < 0.05). Cadmium concentration and its bioaccumulation factor in radish decreased gradually with increasing selenite application rates, while these values decreased at low Se rate (1 mg·kg-1) and increased at high Se rate for selenate treatment. Different Se application rates resulted in Cd fractions distributions to change in soil. Therefore, the application of selenite treatment had a greater detoxification effect on Cd in soil than that in selenate treatment, and the double toxic effect was observed between Se and Cd in high selenate treatment (2.5 mg·kg-1). Combined with human health risk asseeement, the application of 2.5 mg·kg-1 selenite could be a good approach for detoxification in native Cd-contaminated soil used in this study.

Abstract
Kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC) is a popular cruciferous vegetable originating from Central Asia, and is well known for its abundant bioactive compounds. This review discusses the main kale phytochemicals and emphasizes molecules of nutraceutical interest, including phenolics, carotenoids, and glucosinolates. The preventive and therapeutic properties of kale against chronic and degenerative diseases are highlighted according to the most recent in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies reported. Likewise, it is well known that the application of controlled abiotic stresses can be used as an effective tool to increase the content of phytochemicals with health-promoting properties. In this context, the effect of different abiotic stresses (saline, exogenous phytohormones, drought, temperature, and radiation) on the accumulation of secondary metabolites in kale is also presented. The information reviewed in this article can be used as a starting point to further validate through bioassays the effects of abiotically stressed kale on the prevention and treatment of chronic and degenerative diseases.

Abstract
Excess selenium (Se) causes toxicity, and nitric oxide (NO)’s function in spermine (Spm)-induced tolerance to Se stress is unknown. Using wheat plants exposed to 1 mM sodium selenate—alone or in combination with either 1 mM Spm, 0.1 mM NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or 0.1 mM NO scavenger cPTIO—the potential beneficial effects of these compounds to palliate Se-induced stress were evaluated at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels. Se-treated plants accumulated Se in their roots (92%) and leaves (95%) more than control plants. Furthermore, Se diminished plant growth, photosynthetic traits and the relative water content and increased the levels of malondialdehyde, H2O2, osmolyte and endogenous NO. Exogenous Spm significantly decreased the levels of malondialdehyde by 28%, H2O2 by 37% and electrolyte leakage by 42%. Combined Spm/NO treatment reduced the Se content and triggered plant growth, photosynthetic traits, antioxidant enzymes and glyoxalase systems. Spm/NO also upregulated MTP1, MTPC3 and HSP70 and downregulated TaPCS1 and NRAMP1 (metal stress-related genes involved in selenium uptake, translocation and detoxification). However, the positive effects of Spm on Se-stressed plants were eliminated by the NO scavenger. Accordingly, data support the notion that Spm palliates selenium-induced oxidative stress since the induced NO elicits antioxidant defence upregulation but downregulates Se uptake and translocation. These findings pave the way for potential biotechnological approaches to supporting sustainable wheat crop production in selenium-contaminated areas.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is a beneficial trace element for certain animals including humans, while remaining controversial for plants. High Se concentration in soil is toxic to plants especially at seedling stage of the plants. Although, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important for plant stress resistance; but the mechanisms by which AMF alleviate Se stress in crop seedlings are unclear. Therefore, we investigated the potential strategies of AMF symbiosis to alleviate Se stress in maize (Zea mays) from plants and soil perspectives. Results showed that Se stress (Se application level > 5 mg kg-1) significantly inhibited leaf area, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight of maize (P < 0.05). In contrast, AM symbiosis significantly improved root morphology, increased nitrogen and phosphorus nutrition, promoted shoot growth, inhibited the transport of Se from soil/roots to shoots, and then diluted the concentration of Se in shoots (32.65-52.80%). In general, the response of maize growth to AMF was mainly observed in shoots rather than roots. In addition, AMF inoculation significantly increased the easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein and organic matter contents and decreased the availability of soil Se to the plant. Principal component analysis showed that AMF promoted growth and nutrition uptake of maize was the most dominant effect of Se stress alleviation, followed by the decrease of soil Se availability, limiting Se transport from soil/roots to shoots. Moreover, the expression of Se uptake-related ion transporter genes (ZmPht2, ZmNIP2;1, and ZmSultr1;3) in maize roots were down-regulated upon AM symbiosis which resultantly inhibited the uptake and transport of Se from soil to maize roots. Thus, AMF could impede Se stress in maize seedlings by improving plant and soil characteristics.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) deficiency in soil is linked to its low content in edible crops, resulting in adverse impacts on the health of 15% of the global population. The crop mainly absorbs oxidized selenate and selenite from soil, then converts them into organic Se. However, the role of Se-oxidizing bacteria in soil Se oxidation, Se bioavailability and Se absorption into plants remains unclear. The strain Agrobacterium sp. T3F4, isolated from seleniferous soil, was able to oxidize elemental Se into selenite under pure culture conditions. The green fluorescent protein (gfp)-gene-marked strain (T3F4-GFP) and elemental Se or selenite (5 mg·kg-1) were added to pak choi (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis) pot cultures. Observation of the fluorescence and viable counting indicated that GFP-expressing bacterial cells steadily colonized the soil in the pots and the leaves of the pak choi, reaching up to 6.6 × 106 and 2.0 × 105 CFU g-1 at 21 days post cultivation, respectively. Moreover, the total Se content (mostly organic Se) was significantly increased in the pak choi under T3F4 inoculated pot culture, with elemental Se(0) being oxidized into Se(IV), and soil Se(IV) being dissolved before being absorbed by the crop. After strain T3F4 was inoculated, no significant differences in microbial diversity were observed in the soils and roots, whereas the abundance of Rhizobium spp. was significantly increased. To our knowledge, this is the first time that Se-oxidizing Agrobacterium sp. T3F4 has been found to steadily colonize soil and plant tissues, and that its addition to soil increases the absorption of Se in plants. This study provides a potential strategy for Se biofortification.

Abstract
Plants respond to the limited or excess supply of metalloids, boron (B), silicon (Si), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), and antimony (Sb) via complex signaling pathways that are mainly regulated by nitric oxide (NO). The absorption of metalloids from the soil is facilitated by pathways that involve aquaporins, aquaglyceroporins, phosphate, and sulfate transporters; however, their regulation by NO is poorly understood. Using in silico software, we predicted the S-nitrosation of known metalloid transporters, proposing NO-dependent regulation of metalloid transport systems at the posttranslational level. NO intensifies the stress-mitigating effect of Si, whereas in the case of Se, As, and Sb, the accumulation of NO or reactive nitrogen species contributes to toxicity. NO promotes the beneficial effect of low Se concentrations and mitigates the damage caused by B deficiency. In addition, the exogenous application of NO donor, sodium nitroprusside, reduces B, Se, and As toxicity. The primary role of NO in metalloid stress response is to mitigate oxidative stress by activating antioxidant defense at the level of protein activity and gene expression. This review discusses the role of NO in plant responses to metalloids and suggests future research directions.

Abstract
BACKGORUND Cowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains. METHODS Twenty-nine cowpea genotypes were grown in a greenhouse in the absence (control) and presence of Se (12.5 μg Se kg-1 soil) as sodium selenate, in fully randomized scheme. The plants were cultivated until grains harvest. The following variables were determined: roots dry weight (g), leaves + stems dry weight (g), grains dry weight (g), Se concentration (mg kg-1) in roots, leaves + stems and grains, and Se partitioning to shoots and grains. RESULTS Selenium application increased the Se concentration in roots, leaves + stems and grains in all genotypes. At least twofold variation in grain Se concentration was observed among genotypes. Selenium application did not impair biomass accumulation, including grain dry weight. Genotype "BRS Guariba" had the largest Se concentration in grains and leaves + stems. Genotype MNC04-795 F-158 had the largest partitioning of Se to shoots and grain, due to elevated dry weights of leaves + stems and grain, and high Se concentrations in these tissues. CONCLUSION This information might be valuable in future breeding programs to select for genotypes with better abilities to accumulate Se in grain to reduce widespread human Se undernutrition.

Abstract
The mass of leaves and the chlorophyll and selenium content of alfalfa can be increased by the foliar spraying of selenite. To better understand the relationship between changes in the expression of specific proteins and the various metabolic and regulatory pathways affected by selenium treatment, labeling with Tandem Mass Tags (TMT) was used as a proteomics technique to compare control leaves with those enriched with Se. A total of 8,411 proteins were identified, the expression levels of 195 of which were significantly modified, 67 significantly up-regulated and 128 significantly down-regulated. Using gene functional classification and metabolic pathway annotation, selenium treatment was found to have a significant impact on metabolic processes. The energy and substances produced by the metabolic processes of a variety of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids, and the metabolism of carbon may be responsible for increasing the yield of alfalfa leaves. Administration of selenium substantially influenced Se-responsive proteins, including ABC transporter G family member 36, Probable glutathione S-transferase and cysteine tRNA ligase. Selenium treatment may also enhance photosynthesis and the defense response of cells. Furthermore, protein ubiquitination also played an important role in the selenium response of alfalfa leaves. In summary, a basic analysis of the selenium response pathway in alfalfa leaves at the proteomics level was conducted, which may assist in a more detailed elucidation of selenium enrichment in alfalfa in the future.

Abstract
Dietary selenium (Se)-compounds accumulated in plants are essential for human metabolism and normal physiological processes. Inorganic and organic Se species can be readily absorbed by the human body, but are metabolized differently and thus exhibit distinct mechanisms of action. They can act as antioxidants or serve as a source of Se for the synthesis of selenoproteins. Selenocysteine, in particular, is incorporated at the catalytic center of these proteins through a specific insertion mechanism and, due to its electronic features, enhances their catalytic activity against biological oxidants. Selenite and other Se-organic compounds may also act as direct antioxidants in cells due to their strong nucleophilic properties. In addition, Se-amino acids are more easily subjected to oxidation than the corresponding thiols/thioethers and can bind redox-active metal ions. Adequate Se intake aids in preventing several metabolic disorders and affords protection against viral infections. At present, an epidemic caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) threatens human health across several countries and impacts the global economy. Therefore, Se-supplementation could be a complementary treatment to vaccines and pharmacological drugs to reduce the viral load, mutation frequency, and enhance the immune system of populations with low Se intake in the diet.

Abstract
The application of Se yeast as a Se source to cultivate Se-rich cabbage has a significant effect on cabbage growth and quality indices. Results showed that total plant weight, head weight, and head size in cabbage were notably increased by 48.4%, 88.3%, and 25.4% under 16 mg/kg Se yeast treatment, respectively. Compare with the control, a high proportion of 3874% of Se accumulation in cabbage head was also detected in 16 mg/kg Se yeast treatment. Selenocystine (SeCys2) and Methyl-selenocysteine (MeSeCys) were the main Se speciations in the cabbage head. Application of 8 mg/kg Se yeast improved cabbage quality and antioxidant system indices, including free amino acid, soluble sugar, ascorbic acid, phenolic acid, glucosinolates, and SOD activity, which had 81.6%, 46.5%, 34.9%, 12.3%, 44.8%, 25.2% higher than that of the control, respectively. In summary, considering 8 mg/kg Se yeast as the appropriate level of Se enrichment during cabbage cultivation. These findings enhanced our understanding of the effects of Se yeast on the growth and quality of cabbage and provided new insights into Se-enrichment vegetable cultivation.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a primary contaminant in agricultural soils of the world. The ability of Cd uptake, transport, detoxification, and accumulation varies among different plant species and genotypes. Cd is translocated from soil to root by different transporters which are used for essential plant nutrient uptake. A number of strategies have been suggested for decreasing Cd toxicity in Cd contaminated soils. Recently, a lot of research have been carried out on minimizing Cd uptake through selenium (Se) and silicon (Si) applications. Both Se and Si have been reported to mitigate Cd toxicity in different crops. Vacuolar sequestration, formation of phytochelatins, and cell wall adsorption have been reported as effective mechanisms for Cd detoxification. The present review discussed past and current knowledge of literature to better understand Cd toxicity and its mitigation by adopting different feasible and practical approaches.

Abstract
Metalloids such as boron and silicon are key elements for plant growth and crop productivity. However, toxic metalloids such as arsenic are increasing in the environment due to inputs from natural sources and human activities. These hazardous metalloids can cause serious health risks to humans and animals if they enter the food chain. Plants have developed highly regulated mechanisms to alleviate the toxicity of metalloids during their 500 million years of evolution. A better understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the transport and detoxification of toxic metalloids in plants will shed light on developing mitigation strategies. Key transporters and regulatory proteins responsive to toxic metalloids have been identified through evolutionary and molecular analyses. Moreover, knowledge of the regulatory proteins and their pathways can be used in the breeding of crops with lower accumulation of metalloids. These findings can also assist phytoremediation by the exploration of plants such as fern species that hyperaccumulate metalloids from soils and water, and can be used to engineer plants with elevated uptake and storage capacity of toxic metalloids. In summary, there are solutions to remediate contamination due to toxic metalloids by combining the research advances and industrial technologies with agricultural and environmental practices.

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia, one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, is a worldwide public health problem. Nutraceuticals and phytochemicals are attracting attention as a result of their cholesterol-lowering ability and minimal side effects. Among them, selenium (Se) is on the list. The amount of Se in foods varies by region. Se-enriched fertilizers and feeds can raise the Se content in plants and animals, while some processing methods decrease food Se content. This review summarizes recent studies on (1) the content distribution of Se in foods and factors influencing Se-enriched foods, (2) the bioavailability and metabolism of Se, and (3) the role of Se in affecting blood cholesterol and cholesterol metabolism. Although the hypocholesterolemic effect of Se is equivocal, its cholesterol-lowering activity may be more remarkable when the Se supplementation is 200 μg/day or the baseline blood total cholesterol is above 200 mg/dL in humans with low Se status.

Abstract
Selenium is a trace element essential to many organisms, including higher plants. At low concentrations, it enhances growth and development; however, it is toxic at high concentrations. The development of crops with proper levels of selenium will be worth for both nutrition and Se-based therapeutics. This study aimed to investigate the morphological, physiological, and biochemical responses of the quinoa plant to 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L of Na2SeO3·5H2O. Selenium at low concentrations (2.5 and 5 mg/L), quinoa plant showed a significant increase of growth parameters, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments, proline, total soluble sugars, and antioxidant enzymes activities as (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR)), and contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 were reduced. However, high concentrations (10 and 20) mg/L caused a decrease in plant growth parameters, relative water content, and photosynthetic pigments. In contrast, excess selenium increased the oxidative stress monitored by hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation levels. The enzymatic antioxidant system responded to the selenium supply significantly increased. Osmolytes compounds, such as total sugars and proline, increased in selenium-treated plants. The increase in these osmolytes compounds may show a defense mechanism for the osmotic readjustment of quinoa plants to mitigate the toxicity caused by selenium. This study shows the morphological and physiological responses that must be considered for success in the sustainable cultivation of quinoa plants in environments containing excess selenium.

Abstract
Simple Summary This work compiles the current state of knowledge regarding zinc requirements of healthy dogs and biomarkers of zinc status. To ensure an adequate zinc status, it is important to know the zinc content of foods and their bioavailability to assess the need and the ideal supplementation strategy regarding levels and sources of additives in complete dog foods. As zinc is required for enzymatic, structural, and regulatory functions in the animal body, its nutritional status has been associated with several pathologies that may be due to, or exacerbated by, a deficit of dietary zinc supply. Abstract Zinc is an essential trace element, required for enzymatic, structural, and regulatory functions. As body reserves are scarce, an adequate zinc status relies on proper dietary supply and efficient homeostasis. Several biomarkers have been proposed that enable the detection of poor zinc status, but more sensitive and specific ones are needed to detect marginal deficiencies. The zinc content of commercial dry dog foods has great variability, with a more frequent non-compliance with the maximum authorized limit than with the nutritional requirement. The bioavailability of dietary zinc also plays a crucial role in ensuring an adequate zinc status. Despite controversial results, organic zinc sources have been considered more bioavailable than inorganic sources, albeit the zinc source effect is more evident after a restriction period of dietary zinc. Many disorders have been associated with inadequate zinc status, not being clear whether the occurrence of the disease is the consequence or the cause. This review presents data on zinc requirements and biomarkers for zinc status, that can be applied for the development of supplementation strategies of zinc in complete pet foods. Moreover, it provides an understanding of the role zinc plays in the health of dogs, and how altered zinc status affects diseases in dogs.

Abstract
Drought poses a serious threat to oilseed crops by lowering yield and crop failures under prolonged spells. A multi-year field investigation was conducted to enhance the drought tolerance in four genotypes of Camelina and canola by selenium (Se) application. The principal aim of the research was to optimize the crop yield by eliciting the physio-biochemical attributes by alleviating the adverse effects of drought stress. Both crops were cultivated under control (normal irrigation) and drought stress (skipping irrigation at stages i.e., vegetative and reproductive) conditions. Four different treatments of Se viz., seed priming with Se (75 μM), foliar application of Se (7.06 μM), foliar application of Se + Seed priming with Se (7.06 μM and 75 μM, respectively) and control (without Se), were implemented at the vegetative and reproductive stages of both crops. Sodium selenite (Na2SeO3), an inorganic compound was used as Se sources for both seed priming and foliar application. Data regarding physiochemical, antioxidants, and yield components were recorded as response variables at crop maturity. Results indicated that WP, OP, TP, proline, TSS, TFAA, TPr, TS, total chlorophyll contents, osmoprotectant (GB, anthocyanin, TPC, and flavonoids), antioxidants (APX, SOD, POD, and CAT), and yield components (number of branches per plant, thousand seed weight, seed, and biological yields were significantly improved by foliar Se + priming Se in both crops under drought stress. Moreover, this treatment was also helpful in boosting yield attributes under irrigated (non-stress) conditions. Camelina genotypes responded better to Se application as seed priming and foliar spray than canola for both years. It has concluded that Se application (either foliar or priming) can potentially alleviate adverse effects of drought stress in camelina and canola by eliciting various physio-biochemicals attributes under drought stress. Furthermore, Se application was also helpful for crop health under irrigated condition.

Abstract
Atractylodes macrocephala (A. macrocephala), a famous medicinal herb in China, is widely cultivated and consumed in China with various beneficial effects. Numerous studies have shown that selenium (Se) plays an important role in promoting plant growth, although Se has not been considered an essential element for higher plants. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of foliar Se application (0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 mg m-2 Se in sodium selenite, sprayed monthly from May to August) on the growth and rhizospheric soil micro-ecological environment of A. macrocephala, and explore the possible mechanisms underlying plant response to foliar Se application through a field experiment. The results were: The foliar application of 5.0 mg m-2 Se significantly increased the survival rate of A. macrocephala compared to the control. The yield of A. macrocephala was increased when the Se level maintained belowed 10.0 mg m-2 but decreased when Se level reached 20.0 mg m-2. The Se content in the rhizome of A. macrocephala showed a significant positive correlation with the Se level, while the insect attack rate was significantly negatively correlated with the Se level. However, foliar Se application hardly affected the concentration of bioactive compound atractylenolide in the rhizome of A. macrocephala. Notably, the application of foliar Se changed the content of partial soil nutrients, microbial diversity and composition in the rhizosphere soil of A. macrocephala. Bacterial diversity was positively correlated with A. macrocephala growth whereas fungal diversity was negatively correlated, suggesting that microbial diversity in the rhizosphere soils is closely related to plant growth. Moreover, correlation analysis showed that available potassium, Burkholderia and Cupriavidus in rhizospheric soil might be critical factors for promoting the growth of A. macrocephala. Overall, the foliar application of Se at moderate concentration was beneficial for the growth of A. macrocephala, and 5.0-10.0 mg m-2 Se level was the optimum. Our findings revealed novel insights into the response of A. macrocephala to foliar Se application from plant growth, rhizospheric soil nutrient and microbial community composition .

Abstract
The aim of this review is to synthesize current knowledge of selenium (Se) transport and metabolism in plants, with a focus on implications for biofortification and phytoremediation. Selenium is a necessary human micronutrient, and around a billion people worldwide may be Se deficient. This can be ameliorated by Se biofortification of staple crops. Selenium is also a potential toxin at higher concentrations, and multiple environmental disasters over the past 50 years have been caused by Se pollution from agricultural and industrial sources. Phytoremediation by plants able to take up large amounts of Se is an important tool to combat pollution issues. Both biofortification and phytoremediation applications require a thorough understanding of how Se is taken up and metabolized by plants. Selenium uptake and translocation in plants are largely accomplished via sulfur (S) transport proteins. Current understanding of these transporters is reviewed here, and transporters that may be manipulated to improve Se uptake are discussed. Plant Se metabolism also largely follows the S metabolic pathway. This pathway is reviewed here, with special focus on genes that have been, or may be manipulated to reduce the accumulation of toxic metabolites or enhance the accumulation of nontoxic metabolites. Finally, unique aspects of Se transport and metabolism in Se hyperaccumulators are reviewed. Hyperaccumulators, which can accumulate Se at up to 1000 times higher concentrations than normal plants, present interesting specialized systems of Se transport and metabolism. Selenium hyperaccumulation mechanisms and potential applications of these mechanisms to biofortification and phytoremediation are presented.

Abstract
The trace element selenium (Se) is a crucial element for many living organisms, including soil microorganisms, plants and animals, including humans. Generally, in Nature Se is taken up in the living cells of microorganisms, plants, animals and humans in several inorganic forms such as selenate, selenite, elemental Se and selenide. These forms are converted to organic forms by biological process, mostly as the two selenoamino acids selenocysteine (SeCys) and selenomethionine (SeMet). The biological systems of plants, animals and humans can fix these amino acids into Se-containing proteins by a modest replacement of methionine with SeMet. While the form SeCys is usually present in the active site of enzymes, which is essential for catalytic activity. Within human cells, organic forms of Se are significant for the accurate functioning of the immune and reproductive systems, the thyroid and the brain, and to enzyme activity within cells. Humans ingest Se through plant and animal foods rich in the element. The concentration of Se in foodstuffs depends on the presence of available forms of Se in soils and its uptake and accumulation by plants and herbivorous animals. Therefore, improving the availability of Se to plants is, therefore, a potential pathway to overcoming human Se deficiencies. Among these prospective pathways, the Se-biofortification of plants has already been established as a pioneering approach for producing Se-enriched agricultural products. To achieve this desirable aim of Se-biofortification, molecular breeding and genetic engineering in combination with novel agronomic and edaphic management approaches should be combined. This current review summarizes the roles, responses, prospects and mechanisms of Se in human nutrition. It also elaborates how biofortification is a plausible approach to resolving Se-deficiency in humans and other animals.

Abstract
Selenium (Se)-enriched wheat can be improved by altering Se sources and selecting wheat cultivars. Such improvement can affect subcellular distribution and speciation of Se in wheat. Thus, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate Se uptake and distribution when Se was applied as selenite or selenate at low and high rates (1 and 10 mg kg-1, respectively). Moreover, Se's impact on the grain and biomass yield of eight wheat cultivars was also investigated. The subcellular distribution and speciation of Se were also explored to elucidate Se metabolism and micro-distribution pattern in wheat. Results showed that biomass and grain yield were decreased with the application of both selenite and selenate in almost all the cultivars, regardless of the Se rate. Application high Se rate resulted in a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in grain yield and biomass compared with low rate of Se. Compared with the low rate of selenite application, the grain and the biomass yield of ZM-9023 significantly (p < 0.05) increased by about 15% for low rate of selenate application. In addition, both selenite and selenate treatment increased the uptake of Se in each part of wheat, compared with the control. Selenium was mostly accumulated in the grain and root of wheat under selenite treatment, while more Se accumulation was found in leaves and straw for selenate application. Further investigation on the subcellular distribution of Se showed that the proportion of Se in soluble fraction was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in wheat leaves than that in organelle fraction and cell walls (46%-66%). Meanwhile, Se6+ was the main species found in soluble fraction, whereas SeMet and MeSeCys were the species predominantly stored in organelle fraction. In conclusion, wheat cultivar ZM-9023 is the most Se-rich potential cultivar, and the isolation of Se in the soluble fraction plays an important role in Se tolerance and accumulation.

Abstract
Low concentrations of selenium (Se) are beneficial for plant growth. Foliar Se application at high concentrations is toxic to plants due to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study characterized Se toxicity symptoms using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique in response to foliar Se application in cowpea plants. Five Se concentrations (0, 10, 25, 50, 100 e 150 g ha-1) were sprayed on leaves as sodium selenate. The visual symptoms of Se toxicity in cowpea leaves were separated into two stages: I) necrotic points with an irregular distribution and internerval chlorosis at the leaf limb border (50-100 g ha-1); II) total chlorosis with the formation of dark brown necrotic lesions (150 g ha-1). Foliar Se application at 50 g ha-1 increased photosynthetic pigments and yield. Ultrastructural analyses showed that Se foliar application above 50 g ha-1 disarranged the upper epidermis of cowpea leaves. Furthermore, Se application above 100 g ha-1 significantly increased the hydrogen peroxide concentration and lipid peroxidation inducing necrotic leaf lesions. Mapping of the elements in leaves using the XRF revealed high Se intensity, specifically in leaf necrotic lesions accompanied by calcium (Ca) as a possible attenuating mechanism of plant stress. The distribution of Se intensities in the seeds was homogeneous, without specific accumulation sites. Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) were found primarily located in the embryonic region. Understanding the factors involved in Se accumulation and its interaction with Ca support new preventive measurement technologies to prevent Se toxicity in plants.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is a widely distributed trace element with dual (beneficial or toxic) effects for humans, animals, and plants. The availability of Se in the soil is reliant on the structure of the parental material and the procedures succeeding to soil formation. Anthropogenic activities affect the content of Se in the environment. Although plants are the core source of Se in animal and human diet, the role of Se in plants is still debatable. A low concentration of Se can be beneficial for plant growth, development, and ecophysiology both under optimum and unfavorable environmental conditions. However, excess Se results in toxic effects, especially in Se sensitive plants, due to changing structure and function of proteins and induce oxidative/nitrosative stress, which disrupts several metabolic processes. Contrary, Se hyperaccumulators absorb and tolerate exceedingly large amounts of Se, could be potentially used to remediate, i.e., remove, transfer, stabilize, and/or detoxify Se-contaminants in the soil and groundwater. Thereby, Se-hyperaccumulators can play a dynamic role in overcoming global problem Se-inadequacy and toxicity. However, the knowledge of Se uptake and metabolism is essential for the effective phytoremediation to remove this element. Moreover, selecting the most efficient species accumulating Se is crucial for successful phytoremediation of a particular Se-contaminated area. This review emphasizes Se toxicity in plants and the environment with regards to Se biogeochemistry and phytoremediation aspects. This review follows a critical approach and stimulates thought for future research avenues.

Abstract
The glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) are enzymes which are part of the cell antioxidant system inhibiting the ROS-induced damages of membranes and proteins. In cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) genome, five GPX genes were identified. Cysteine insertion codons (UGU) were found in TcPHGPX, TcGPX2, TcGPX4, TcGPX6 and tryptophan insertion codon (UGG) in TcGPX8. Multiple alignments revealed conserved domains between TcGPXs and other plants and human GPXs. Homology modeling was performed using the Populus trichocarpa GPX5 structure as template, and the molecular modeling showed that TcGPXs have affinity with selenometionine in their active site. In silico analysis of the TcGPXs promoter region revealed the presence of conserved cis-elements related to biotic stresses and hormone responsiveness. The expression analysis of TcGPXs in cacao plantlet meristems infected by M. perniciosa showed that TcGPXs are most expressed in susceptible variety than in resistant one, mainly in disease stages in which oxidative stress and programmed cell death occurred. This data, associated with phylogenetic and location analysis suggested that TcGPXs may play a role in protecting cells from oxidative stress as a try of disease progression reduction. To our knowledge, this is the first study of the overall GPX family from T. cacao.

Abstract
To succeed in life, living organisms have to adapt to the environmental issues to which they are subjected. Some plants, defined as hyperaccumulators, have adapted to metalliferous environments, acquiring the ability to tolerate and accommodate high amounts of toxic metal into their shoot, without showing symptoms of toxicity. The determinants for these traits and their mode of action have long been the subject of research, whose attention lately moved to the evolution of the hypertolerance and hyperaccumulation traits. Genetic evidence indicates that the evolution of both traits includes significant evolutionary events that result in species-wide tolerant and accumulating backgrounds. Different edaphic environments are responsible for subsequent refinement, by local adaptive processes, leading to specific strategies and various degrees of hypertolerance and hyperaccumulation, which characterize metallicolous from non-metallicolous ecotypes belonging to the same genetic unit. In this review, we overview the most updated concepts regarding the evolution of hyperaccumulation and hypertolerance, highlighting also the ecological context concerning the plant populations displaying this fascinating phenomenon.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) biofortification in crops provides a valuable strategy to enhance human Se intake. However, crops vary greatly with their capacity in tolerating and metabolizing/accumulating Se, and the basis underlying such variations remains to be fully understood. Here, we compared the effects of Se and its analog S treatments on plant growth and biochemical responses between a Se accumulator (arugula) and a non-accumulator (lettuce). Arugula exhibited an increased biomass production in comparison with untreated controls at a higher selenate concentration than lettuce (20 μM vs. 10 μM Na2SeO4), showing better tolerance to Se. Arugula accumulated 3-folds more Se and S than lettuce plants under the same treatments. However, the Se/S assimilation as assessed by ATP sulfurylase and O-acetylserine (thiol)lyase activities was comparable between arugula and lettuce plants. Approximately 4-fold higher levels of Se in proteins under the same doses of Se treatments were observed in arugula than in lettuce, indicating that Se accumulators have better tolerance to selenoamino acids in proteins. Noticeably, arugula showed 6-fold higher ascorbate peroxidase activity and produced over 5-fold more glutathione and non-protein thiols than lettuce plants, which suggest critical roles of antioxidants in Se tolerance. Taken together, our results show that the elevated Se tolerance of arugula compared to lettuce is most likely due to an efficient antioxidant defense system. This study provides further insights into our understanding of the difference in tolerating and metabolizing/accumulating Se between Se accumulators and non-accumulators.

Abstract
Cardamine violifolia (Brassicaceae) is a novel selenium(Se) hyperaccumulation plant with rich nutrients, and serves as a good source of special vegetables in Enshi, China. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the application of selenate, selenite, and Se yeast (50-800 mg/L) on the growth, Se accumulation, nutrient uptake, and antioxidant response of C. violifolia. The results showed that the Se accumulation efficiency was selenate > selenite > Se yeast, the maximum Se concentration could achieve over 7000 mg/kg, and about 90% was organic Se. The major Se speciation found was mainly SeCys2 and the proportion of various Se species were affected by the Se forms and concentrations. Besides, the plant growth, nutrition quality indexes, element uptakes, and antioxidant responses indicated that 200 mg/L selenate was optimum for C. violifolia to accumulate Se without much impacts, while to obtain more proportion of organic Se, 200 mg/L selenite might be a better choice.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is considered a beneficial element to higher plants based on its regulation of antioxidative system under abiotic or biotic stresses. However, the limit of beneficial and toxic physiological effects of Se is very narrow. In the present study, the antioxidant performance, nutritional composition, long-distance transport of Se, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of Coffea arabica genotypes in response to Se concentration in solution were evaluated. Five Coffea arabica genotypes (Obatã, IPR99, IAC125, IPR100 and Catucaí) were used, which were grown in the absence and presence of Se (0 and 1.0 mmol L-1) in nutrient solution. The application of 1 mmol L-1 Se promoted root browning in all genotypes. There were no visual symptoms of leaf toxicity, but there was a reduction in the concentration of phosphorus and sulfur in the shoots of plants exposed to high Se concentration. Except for genotype Obatã, the coffee seedlings presented strategies for regulating Se uptake by reducing long-distance transport of Se from roots to shoots. The concentrations of total chlorophyll, total pheophytin, and carotenoids were negatively affected in genotypes Obatã, IPR99, and IAC125 upon exposure to Se at 1 mmol L-1. H2O2 production was reduced in genotypes IPR99, IPR100, and IAC125 upon exposure to Se, resulting in lower activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). These results suggest that antioxidant metabolism was effective in regulating oxidative stress in plants treated with Se. The increase in sucrose, and decrease in SOD, CAT and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities, as well as Se compartmentalization in the roots, were the main biochemical and physiological modulatory effects of coffee seedlings under stress conditions due to excess of Se.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a pollutant toxic to plants and a potential threat to human health. Selenium (Se), though not essential for plants, has beneficial effects on plants under abiotic stress. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of different forms of Se (Nano-Se, selenite, selenate, and SeMet) on accumulation, subcellular distribution, and chemical forms of Cd, as well as oxidative stress in rice seedlings. Cd (20 μmol·L−1) treatment significantly decreased biomass accumulation and chlorophyll content. The application of all Se forms, except selenate, mitigated the adverse effects of Cd on growth and chlorophyll content. The application of selenite, Nano-Se, and SeMet decreased root and shoot Cd concentrations as well as root-to-shoot Cd translocation in rice seedlings. Selenate application decreased shoot Cd concentration and root-to-shoot Cd translocation with no effect on root Cd concentration. Accordingly, Se increased the sequestration of Cd in the cell wall and vacuoles and decreased the active chemical form of Cd in rice seedlings. SeMet was the most effective supplement that decreased Cd concentration and enhanced Se concentration in the roots and shoots of rice seedlings. All forms of Se further enhanced catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and inhibited MDA accumulation. To conclude, Se influenced Cd accumulation and translocation in rice seedlings by altering the subcellular distribution, chemical forms, and antioxidant defense system under Cd stress. These effects were highly significant with SeMet treatment, probably due to better absorption and utilization by the plant.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element to higher plants. Application of Se at low concentrations enhances the antioxidant metabolism reducing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by plant membrane cells. This study aimed to evaluate how the application of Se in the forms sodium selenate and sodium selenite regulates ROS scavenging in field-grown cowpea plants. Seven Se application rates (0; 2.5; 5; 10; 20; 40 and 60 g ha-1) of each of the two Se forms were applied to plants via the soil. Photosynthetic pigments concentration, gas exchange parameters, lipid peroxidation by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, hydrogen peroxide concentration, activity of catalase (CAT, EC:1.11.1.6), glutathione reductase (GR, EC:1.6.4.2), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC:1.11.1.11) and Se concentration in leaves and grains were evaluated. In general, Se application led to a decrease in chlorophyll a concentration whilst leading to an increase in chlorophyll b, indicating conservation of total chlorophyll concentration. Application of 2.5 g ha-1 of Se as selenate provided a notable increase in total chlorophyll and total carotenoids compared to the other application rates. Selenate and selenite application decreased lipid peroxidation. However, each Se source acted in a different pathway to combat ROS. While selenate showed more potential to increase activity of APX and GR, selenite showed a higher potential to increase CAT activity. The negative correlation between CAT and GR is indicative that both pathways might be activated under distinct circumstances. The more prominent activity of CAT under high rates of selenite resulted in a negative correlation of this enzyme with chlorophyll a and carotenoids. Both selenate and selenite application increased sucrose and total sugars concentration in leaves of cowpea plants. Overall, these results indicate that application of Se in cowpea under field conditions stimulates distinct pathways to scavenge ROS. This could prove beneficial to mitigate oxidative stress during plant development.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential micronutrient required for the health of humans and lower plants, but its importance for higher plants is still being investigated. The biological functions of Se related to human health revolve around its presence in 25 known selenoproteins (e.g., selenocysteine or the 21st amino acid). Humans may receive their required Se through plant uptake of soil Se, foods enriched in Se, or Se dietary supplements. Selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) have been applied to biofortified foods and feeds. Due to low toxicity and high efficiency, Se-NPs are used in applications such as cancer therapy and nano-medicines. Selenium and nano-selenium may be able to support and enhance the productivity of cultivated plants and animals under stressful conditions because they are antimicrobial and anti-carcinogenic agents, with antioxidant capacity and immune-modulatory efficacy. Thus, nano-selenium could be inserted in the feeds of fish and livestock to improvise stress resilience and productivity. This review offers new insights in Se and Se-NPs biofortification for edible plants and farm animals under stressful environments. Further, extensive research on Se-NPs is required to identify possible adverse effects on humans and their cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Selenium-enriched peptides from Cardamine violifolia (CSP) have excellent antioxidant functions but little is known about their effects on obesity and associated metabolic disorders in mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD). In this study, C57BL/6 mice were fed a HFD with or without CSP supplementation (CSPL: 26 μg Se per kg bw per d; CSPH: 104 μg per kg bw per d) for 10 weeks. The results showed that both CSPL and CSPH could ameliorate overweight gain, excess fat accumulation, serum lipid metabolism, and insulin resistance. The potential mechanism might be associated with the increase in thermogenesis, reduced oxidative stress, and inflammation, which regulated the gene expression in lipid and cholesterol metabolism. In addition, CSPL and CSPH also maintained the intestinal integrity and modulated the gut microbiota. Increased Blautia in CSP may be involved in the protective effect against obesity. Furthermore, a distinct increase in Lactobacillus was exclusively found in CSPH, suggesting that a more effective function of CSPH on metabolic disorders might be through the synergism of Blautia and Lactobacillus. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed that these specific genera were significantly correlated with the metabolic improvements. Taken together, CSP supplementation prevented HFD-induced obesity and metabolic disorders, probably by ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammation, regulating metabolic genes, and modulating the gut microbiota compositions.

Abstract
We investigated the mechanistic consequences of selenium (Se)-toxicity, and its possible mitigation using salicylic acid (SA) in rice. In comparison with control, sodium selenate-exposed 'Se1' (0.5 mM) and 'Se2' (1.0 mM) plants showed accumulation of Se by 190.63 and 288.00 % in roots, 2359.42 and 2054.35 % in leaf sheaths, and 7869.91 and 9063.72 % in leaves, respectively, resulting in severe toxicity symptoms, such as growth inhibition, chlorosis, burning of leaves, and oxidative stress. In contrast, SA addition to Se-stressed plants significantly alleviated the Se-toxicity symptoms, and radically improved shoot height (28.88 %), dry biomass (34.00 %), total chlorophyll (37.51 %), soluble sugar (17.31 %) and leaf water contents (22.31 %) in 'SA + Se2' plants over 'Se2' plants. Notably, SA maintained Se-homeostasis, and decreased 'Se2'-induced oxidative stress by enhancing ascorbate level (67.75 %) and the activities of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (20.99 %), catalase (40.97 %), glutathione peroxidase (12.26 %), and glutathione reductase (32.58 %) relative to that in 'Se2' plants. Additionally, SA protected rice plants from the deleterious effects of methylglyoxal by stimulating the activities of glyoxalase enzymes. Furthermore, SA upregulated several genes associated with reactive oxygen species (e.g. OsCuZnSOD1, OsCATB, OsGPX1 and OsAPX2) and methylglyoxal (e.g. OsGLYI-1) detoxifications. These findings unravel a decisive role of SA in alleviating Se-phytotoxicity in rice.

Abstract
PREMISE The ecological implications of hyperaccumulation have been investigated at the organismal level, but are poorly understood at the plant community level. Questions addressed here were: Does the presence of selenium (Se) hyperaccumulators affect Se distribution and concentration in their native soil, and do hyperaccumulators affect overall vegetation properties and species composition? METHODS Plant survey and soil Se mapping were performed at three seleniferous sites in Colorado. In season one, plots with and without hyperaccumulators were compared for (1) bare ground, canopy cover, and species richness; (2) relative species abundance; (3) soil Se distribution and concentration. In season two, a smaller-scale design was implemented, focusing on areas 3 m in diameter around hyperaccumulators versus nonhyperaccumulators in 44 paired plots on one site. RESULTS Plots with hyperaccumulators generally showed more bare ground, less canopy cover, higher species richness, and 2-3-fold higher soil Se levels. These patterns were not consistently significant across all sites; the effects of hyperaccumulators may have been diluted by their low abundance and the relatively large area of survey. In the smaller-scale study, highly significant results were obtained, showing more bare ground, less canopy cover, and higher species richness in plots with hyperaccumulators; soil Se concentration was also higher in plots with hyperaccumulators. CONCLUSIONS Hyperaccumulators may significantly affect local soil Se concentration and vegetation over at least a 3 m diameter area, or 4× their canopy. These differences may result from the combined positive and negative allelopathic effects observed earlier at the organismal level.
