In Silico Study of Novel Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes of Polycaprolactone and Its Correlation with Skin Regeneration

Three novel biomaterials obtained via inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin, 6-deoxi-6-amino-β-cyclodextrin and epithelial growth factor grafted to 6-deoxi-6-amino-β-cyclodextrin with polycaprolactone. Furthermore, some physicochemical, toxicological and absorption properties were predicted using bioinformatics tools. The electronic, geometrical and spectroscopical calculated properties agree with the properties obtained via experimental methods, explaining the behaviors observed in each case. The interaction energy was obtained, and its values were -60.6, -20.9 and -17.1 kcal/mol for β-cyclodextrin/polycaprolactone followed by the 6-amino-β-cyclodextrin-polycaprolactone complex and finally the complex of epithelial growth factor anchored to 6-deoxy-6-amino-β-cyclodextrin/polycaprolactone. Additionally, the dipolar moments were calculated, achieving values of 3.2688, 5.9249 and 5.0998 Debye, respectively, and in addition the experimental wettability behavior of the studied materials has also been explained. It is important to note that the toxicological predictions suggested no mutagenic, tumorigenic or reproductive effects; moreover, an anti-inflammatory effect has been shown. Finally, the improvement in the cicatricial effect of the novel materials has been conveniently explained by comparing the poly-caprolactone data obtained in the experimental assessments.

Semi-Synthesis of Different Pyranoflavonoid Backbones and the Neurogenic Potential

Flavonoids and chalcones are known for their manifold biological activities, of which many affect the central nervous system. Pyranochalcones were recently shown to have a great neurogenic potential, which is partly due to a specific structural motif-the pyran ring. Accordingly, we questioned if other flavonoid backbones with a pyran ring as structural moiety would also show neurogenic potential. Different semi-synthetic approaches starting with the prenylated chalcone xanthohumol, isolated from hops, led to pyranoflavanoids with different backbones. We identified the chalcone backbone as the most active backbone with pyran ring using a reporter gene assay based on the promoter activity of doublecortin, an early neuronal marker. Pyranochalcones therefore appear to be promising compounds for further development as a treatment strategy for neurodegenerative diseases.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Antibacterial Activity of New Isatin Derivatives

1H-indol-2,3-dione (isatin) class of biologically active compounds have analgesic, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tubercular, anti-proliferative properties, and is also useful for the treatment of SARS-CoV. Schiff bases containing isatin moiety are known to have broad spectrum of biological activities like anti-viral, anti-tubercular, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. In this work, several Schiff base derivatives have been synthesized using two methods (synthetic and microwave) by reacting isatin with o-phenylenediamine. The synthesized compounds were structurally characterized and their in-vivo antimicrobial activity was tested against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria using the inhibition zone method. Several newly synthesized isatin derivatives were found effective as antimicrobial agents and showed good potency (compounds 3c, 3d, 6a, 6b, 6d). Compound 3c displayed higher antimicrobial activity than standard drug (Amoxicillin) against Staphylococcus aureus at higher concentration (16 μg/mL) and against Escherichia coli at lower concentration (1 μg/mL).

One-pot synthesis of metal oxide-clay composite for the evaluation of dye removal studies: Taguchi optimization of parameters and environmental toxicity studies

The present study demonstrates the synthesis of eco-friendly metal oxide-clay composites (MgO-clay and CaO-clay) with phytochemical functionalization. The physical and chemical properties of prepared composites were characterized using standard techniques viz. scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The effect of pH on the dye adsorption capability of the synthesized composites was studied. The adsorption of an anionic dye methyl orange (MO) and a cationic due methylene blue (MB) was favored in the acidic and basic regions, respectively. The Taguchi design approach was adopted for the removal of MO and MB from wastewater using the synthesized composites. The obtained results suggest that initial dye concentration and composite dosage were the most influential parameters in dye removal among all the studied parameters. The adsorption experiments were carried out using MgO-clay and CaO-clay composites with the optimum conditions obtained from Taguchi optimization to validate the predicted response. The experimental parameters viz. the effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and solution temperature were studied for screened composite (CaO-clay) with optimized conditions. The obtained results were interpreted using standard isotherms and kinetic models. A maximum adsorption capacity of 571 ± 10 and 859 ± 14 mg g^-1 was obtained from the Langmuir adsorption isotherm for MO and MB, respectively. Regeneration studies suggested that the CaO-clay composite can be utilized up to 3 cycles with reduced adsorption capacity of the dyes over cycles due to the solid binding nature of dyes on the CaO-clay composite. The fresh and utilized CaO-clay composite were tested for their environmental toxicity analysis using ecologically important soil microorganisms. The obtained results suggested no detrimental effects on soil microbe's functionality, indicating their threat-free disposal in the soil environment.

The curious case of polyphenols as green corrosion inhibitors: a review on their extraction, design, and applications

Over the past century, a substantial amount of research focused on developing corrosion inhibitors, with a special focus on green "plant-based" corrosion inhibitors. Among the various types of inhibitors, polyphenols emerged as a promising candidate due to their advantageous characteristics, which include being inexpensive, biodegradable, renewable, and, most importantly, safe for both the environment and humans. Their performance as sustainable corrosion inhibitors have encouraged many electrochemical experiments as well as theoretical, mechanistic, and computational studies, with many papers reporting inhibition efficiencies of over 85%. In this review, the majority of literature contributions on the inhibition of various types of polyphenols, their natural extraction techniques, and their applications as "greener" corrosion inhibitors for metals are thoroughly described and discussed with a focus on their preparation, inhibition mechanism, and performance. Based on the reviewed literature, it can be concluded that polyphenols have a very promising potential to be used as both green and powerful corrosion inhibitors; therefore, further investigations, experimental or computational, are still required to realize higher inhibition efficiencies reaching up to ≈ 100%.

Silicon nanoparticles as a fluorometric probe for sensitive detection of cyanide ion and its application in C. elegans bio-imaging

In recent years, silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) have been explored as a promising alternative to traditional organic fluorophores in optical sensing and bioimaging applications owing to their exceptional optical properties and negligible toxicity. In this study, water-dispersible Si NPs were prepared from a 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane precursor using a facile one-pot process. The as-prepared Si NPs exhibited excitation-wavelength-dependent fluorescence properties and bright green fluorescence at 530 nm upon excitation at 420 nm. The fluorescence properties of Si NPs remained unperturbed under various physiological conditions, such as varying pH, ionic strength, and incubation time. A sensitive fluorometric turn-off sensor for cyanide ion (CN^-) detection was devised based on the unique fluorescence properties of Si NPs. The Si NPs-based detection assay showed a good linear response toward CN^- ranging between 0 and 33 μM, with a limit of detection as low as 0.90 nM. Caenorhabditis elegans is used as a model organism to evaluate the in vivo toxicity and molecular imaging capability of Si NPs.

Valorization of coffee wastes as plant growth promoter in mulching film production: A contribution to a circular economy

Food waste valorization, considered as energy and/or chemicals source, via biorefinery or biotechnology, gained great attention in recent years, because of the fast depletion of primary resources, increased waste generation and landfilling worldwide. Coffee by-products for example (i.e. coffee pulp, coffee husks, silver skin, spent coffee, etc.) have been investigated in different forms either as a source of antioxidant and valuable chemicals and as a filler in composites. A new valorization route for coffee silver skin (CSS), up to now just sent to damping, is here investigated: particulate bio-composites based on poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA), an aliphatic biodegradable polyester commercially available, have been formulated with up to a 30 wt% of CSS, in order to prepare mulching films for agriculture. The bacterial analysis of the filler indeed, has underlined the presence of potential Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria species, mainly ascribed to the Bacillus genus, which can survive both the roasting and the compounding processes. The obtained composites have been characterized mechanically and thermally and their hydrophilic nature has been investigated by measuring their contact angle. Eventually, the bacteria release from the composite films has been examined by means of in-vitro tests. The plant growth promoting capability of the films was preliminarily evaluated in pot experiments using lettuce as a model crop. The composite films were able to release the endogenous bacteria in the soil and to stimulate plant and root growth of the assayed crop. The possibility to produce functionalized biodegradable mulching films by recycling agricultural wastes can thus be forecast, highlighting potential multiple advantages in terms of soil preservation/fertilization, decrease of polymeric materials in mulching products, exploitation of a waste.

Snapshot of the pollution-driven metabolic and microbiota changes in Carassius gibelio from Bucharest leisure lakes

In the last decades, increased intakes of contaminants and the habitats' destruction have produced drastic changes in the aquatic ecosystems. The environmental contaminants can accumulate in aquatic organisms, leading to the disturbance of the antioxidant/prooxidant balance in fish. In this context, we evaluated the level of organic, inorganic and microbiological pollutants in four leisure lakes (Chitila, Floreasca, Tei and Vacaresti) from Bucharest, the largest city of Romania, in order to compare their effects on hepatopancreas and gills metabolism and antioxidant defense mechanisms in Carassius gibelio, the most known and widespread freshwater fish in this country. The lowest level of oxidative stress was recorded in the case of fish collected from the Vacaresti lake, a protected wetland area where aquatic organisms live in wild environmental conditions. In contrast, significant oxidative changes were observed in the hepatopancreas and gills of fish from the Chitila, Floreasca and Tei lakes, such as reduced glutathione S-transferase activity and glutathione level, and increased degree of lipid peroxidation, being correlated with elevated levels of pesticides (such as 2,4'-methoxychlor) and Escherichia coli load in these organs. Although different patterns of pollutants' accumulation were observed, no important interindividual variations in cytosine methylation degree were determined. In conclusion, the presence and concentrations of metals, pesticides and antibiotics varied with the analyzed tissue and sampling site, and were correlated with changes in the cellular redox homeostasis, but without significantly affecting the epigenetic mechanisms.

Phytochemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Plectocephalus varians (A. Rich.) C. Jeffrey ex Cufod root extracts

Plants have been used to treat diverse types of diseases in different cultural groups around the globe. In this regard, the root of Plectocephalus varians (P. varians) is claimed to have a beneficiary effect in treating cancer and hemorrhoids in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed at the phytochemical investigation, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of n-hexane, acetone, and methanolic extracts of P. varians root. The different crude extracts of P. varians were obtained through maceration technique. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of the extracts were estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) and aluminum chloride colorimetric assays, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The antibacterial activities of the extracts were assessed by using disc diffusion method. The results echoed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, phenols, tannins, anthraquinones, terpenoids, polyphenols, and glycosides in the root of P. varians. The methanolic root extract (MRE) had the highest TPC (107.18 mg GAE/g) and TFC (120.194 mg QE/g) followed by acetone root extract (ARE) (TPC = 98.68 mg GAE/g; TFC = 64.038 mg QE/g) and n-hexane root extract (HRE) (TPC = 12.39 mg GAE/g; TFC = 9.917 mg QE/g). The DPPH radical scavenging and FRAP assays demonstrated the antioxidant effects of HRE (IC₅₀ = 681.75 ppm; EC₅₀ = 60.65 ppm), ARE (IC₅₀ = 165.73 ppm; EC₅₀ = 51.67 ppm) and MRE (IC₅₀ = 132.06 ppm; EC₅₀ = 30.97 ppm) of P. varians. Furthermore, the root fractions elicited pronounced dose-dependent growth inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae with mean zone of inhibition (MZI) ranging from 11 ± 0.38 to 20 ± 0.04 mm at 800 ppm. Overall, the present study provides ethnopharmacological evidence suggesting the medicinal importance of P. varians. The results also call for further bioassay-guided phytochemical screening and in vitro and/or in vivo bioactivity testing.

Antiangiogenic Pterocarpan and Flavonoid Constituents of Erythrina lysistemon

The roots of Erythrina lysistemon, growing in Egypt, yielded 24 flavonoid compounds, including 17 pterocarpans, two isoflavanones, one flavanone, two isoflavans, one 2-arylbenzofuran, and an isoflava-3-ene. Nine pterocarpans have not been reported previously (7-9, 11-14, 19, and 20), and 11 are reported here for the first time from this species. Structures were established using HRESIMS, NMR, and circular dichroism techniques. Selected compounds were tested for their ability to block the growth of human retinal endothelial cells and antiangiogenic activity in vitro. The isoflavonoids 5 and 6, and the pterocarpans 1, 2, 4, 20, and 22 demonstrated selective antiproliferative activities on endothelial cells compared to a nonendothelial cell type, with concentration-dependent antiangiogenic effects in vitro against HRECs, a cell type relevant to neovascular eye diseases.

Chitosan catalyzed synthesis and mechanistic study of Steroidal 2H-Pyran ring formation

A simple and convenient method is reported for the preparation of steroidal 2H-pyran 2 by reacting 3β-acetoxy cholest-5-ene-7-one 1 with N-benzyl-2-cyanoacetamide in presence of chitosan, a green and heterogeneous catalyst. The product 2 was characterized by using NMR (¹H and ³C), IR, and mass spectroscopy. The mechanism of 2H-pyran ring formation is described by employing theoretical B3LYP/6-31G (d) density functional method. The reaction undergoes via formation of two intermediates A and B, and each intermediate undergoes through a transition state TS1 and TS2. The molecular properties like relative energy and FMO analysis were used to explain the mechanism of the reaction. The HOMOs and LUMOs were found in support of the present reaction mechanism. The stability of all the calculated structures which includes reactant (1a), intermediates (A and B), product (2a) as well as TS1 and TS2 transition states, was supported by calculating their energy minima and fundamental frequencies.

New pyrazolopyridine and pyrazolothiazole-based compounds as anti-proliferative agents targeting c-Met kinase inhibition: design, synthesis, biological evaluation, and computational studies

c-Met tyrosine kinase plays a key role in the oncogenic process. Inhibition of the c-Met has emerged as an attractive target for human cancer treatment. This work deals with the design and synthesis of a new set of derivatives bearing pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine, pyrazolo[3,4-b]thieno[3,2-e]pyridine, and pyrazolo[3,4-d]thiazole-5-thione scaffolds, 5a,b, 8a-f, and 10a,b, respectively, utilizing 3-methyl-1-tosyl-1H-pyrazol-5(4H)-one (1) as a key starting material. All the new compounds were evaluated as antiproliferative agents against HepG-2, MCF-7, and HCT-116 human cancer cell lines utilizing 5-fluorouracil and erlotinib as two standard drugs. Compounds 5a,b and 10a,b represented the most promising cytotoxic activity of IC₅₀ values ranging from 3.42 ± 1.31 to 17.16 ± 0.37 μM. Both 5a and 5b showed the most cytotoxicity and selectivity toward HepG-2, with IC₅₀ values of 3.42 ± 1.31 μM and 3.56 ± 1.5 μM, respectively. The enzyme assay demonstrated that 5a and 5b had inhibition potency on c-Met with IC₅₀ values in nanomolar range of 4.27 ± 0.31 and 7.95 ± 0.17 nM, respectively in comparison with the reference drug cabozantinib (IC₅₀; 5.38 ± 0.35 nM). The impact of 5a on the cell cycle and apoptosis induction potential in HepG-2 and on the apoptotic parameters; Bax, Bcl-2, p53, and caspase-3 was also investigated. Finally, the molecular docking simulation of the most promising derivatives 5a and 5b was screened against c-Met to investigate the binding patterns of both compounds in the active site of the c-Met enzyme. In silico ADME studies were also performed for 5a and 5b to predict their physicochemical and pharmacokinetic characteristics.

Copper Nanoparticles and Reduced Graphene Oxide as an Electrode Modifier for the Development of an Electrochemical Sensing Platform for Chloroquine Phosphate Determination

This study describes the use of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as an electrode modifier for the determination of chloroquine phosphate (CQP). The synthetized rGO-CuNPs composite was morphologically characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electrochemically characterized using cyclic voltammetry. The parameters were optimized and the developed electrochemical sensor was applied in the determination of CQP using square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The analytical range for the determination of CQP was 0.5 to 110 μmol L^-1 (one of the highest linear ranges for CQP considering electrochemical sensors), with limits of detection and quantification of 0.23 and 0.78 μmol L^-1, respectively. Finally, the glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with rGO-CuNPs was used for quantification of CQP in tap water; a study was carried out with interferents using SWV and obtained great results. The use of rGO-CuNP material as an electrode modifier was thus shown to be a good alternative for the development of low-cost devices for CQP analysis.

Efficient adsorption of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by electrospun hydrophobic PTFE-NiO composite nanofiber filter mats

Aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons (AAHs) are comprised of a variety of gaseous chemicals that may affect human and environmental health. To remove AAHs from air, polytetrafluoroethylene-nickel oxide (PTFE-NiO) composite nanofiber filter mats (NFMs) were synthesized and characterized for their ability to effectively adsorb AAHs. The NiO-nanoparticle-doped mats were fabricated by green electrospinning of PTFE and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixtures added with nickel (II) nitrate hexahydrate in the spinning solution followed by surface heat treatment. FE-SEM FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, sessile drop and Jar methods were applied as characterization techniques. The diameter of the electrospun nanofibers without NiO dopant ranged from 0.34 ± 21.61 to 0.23 ± 10.12 µm, whereas a reduction in diameter of NiO-doped nanofibers was obtained, ranging between pristine to 0.25 ± 24.12 µm and 0.12 ± 85.75 µm with heat treatment. 6% (by weight) NiO-doped PTFE composite NFMs exhibited a high water-contact angle of 120 ± 2.20 degrees; the high hydrophobicity value aided self-cleansing property of NFMs for practical applications. UV adsorption capability for heat-treated PTFE-NiO NFMs was evaluated for three AAHs, and the results showed that 6 wt% NiO adsorbed 1.41, 0.67, and 0.73 µg/mg of toluene, formaldehyde and acetone, respectively. These findings reveal the potential applicability of the prepared filter mats for capturing various AAHs from polluted air.

Cytotoxicity and mechanism of action of metal complexes: An overview

After the discovery of cisplatin, many metal compounds were investigated for the therapy of diseases, especially cancer. The high therapeutic potential of metal-based compounds is related to the special properties of these compounds, such as their redox activity and ability to target vital biological sites. The overproduction of ROS and the consequent destruction of the membrane potential of mitochondria and/or the DNA helix is one of the known pathways leading to the induction of apoptosis by metal complexes. The apoptosis process can occur via the death receptor pathway and/or the mitochondrial pathway. The expression of Bcl2 proteins and the caspase family play critical roles in these pathways. In addition to apoptosis, autophagy is another process that regulates the suppression or promotion of various cancers through a dual action. On the other hand, the ability to interact with DNA is an important property found in several metal complexes with potent antiproliferative effects against cancer cells. These interactions were classified into two important categories: covalent/coordinated or subtle, and non-coordinated interactions. The anticancer activity of metal complexes is sometimes achieved by the simultaneous combination of several mechanisms. In this review, the anticancer effect of metal complexes is mechanistically discussed by different pathways, and some effective agents on their antiproliferative properties are explained.

Physico-chemical, structural, and adsorption properties of amino-modified starch derivatives for the removal of (in)organic pollutants from aqueous solutions

In this study, an environmentally sustainable process of crystal violet, congo red, methylene blue, brilliant green, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions adsorption from aqueous solutions onto amino-modified starch derivatives was investigated. The degree of substitution, elemental analysis, swelling capacity, solubility, and FTIR, XRD, and SEM techniques were used to characterize the adsorbents. The influence of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration has been studied to optimize the adsorption conditions. The amino-modified starch was the most effective in removing crystal violet (CV) (65.31-80.46 %) and Pb²⁺ (67.44-80.33 %) within the optimal adsorption conditions (pH 5, 10 mg dm^-3, 25 °C, 180 min). The adsorption of CV could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, while the adsorption of Pb²⁺ ions was better described by the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second order model can be used to describe the adsorption kinetics of CV and Pb²⁺ on all tested samples. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption of CV was exothermic, while the Pb²⁺ adsorption was endothermic. The simultaneous removal of CV and Pb²⁺ from the binary mixture has shown their competitive behavior. Thus, the amino-modified starch is a promising eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals from polluted water.

Aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with trans-resveratrol in aqueous solution

In the framework of a protein-ligand-fishing strategy to identify proteins that bind to trans-resveratrol, a natural phenolic compound with pharmacological benefits, we have developed magnetic nanoparticles covalently linked to trans-resveratrol through three different derivatives and examined their aggregation behavior in aqueous solution. The monodispersed magnetic core (18 nm diameter) with its mesoporous silica shell (93 nm diameter) exhibited a notable superparamagnetic behavior useful for magnetic bioseparation. The hydrodynamic diameter, deduced from dynamic light scattering analysis, of the nanoparticle increased from 100 to 800 nm when the aqueous buffer changed from pH 10.0-3.0. A size polydispersion occurred from pH 7.0-3.0. In parallel, the value of the extinction cross section increased according to a negative power law of the UV wavelength. This was mainly due to light scattering by mesoporous silica, whereas the absorbance cross section remained very low in the 230-400 nm domain. The three types of resveratrol-grafted magnetic nanoparticles exhibited similar scattering properties, but their absorbance spectrum was consistent with the presence of trans-resveratrol. Their functionalization increased their negative zeta potential when pH increased from 3.0 to 10.0. The mesoporous nanoparticles were monodispersed in alkaline conditions, where their anionic surface strongly repulsed each other but aggregated progressively under van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding when negative zeta potential decreased. The characterized results of nanoparticle behavior in aqueous solution provide critical insight for further study of nanoparticles with proteins in biological environment.

Effective Adsorption and Removal of Doxorubicin from Aqueous Solutions Using Mesostructured Silica Nanospheres: Box-Behnken Design Optimization and Adsorption Performance Evaluation

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of mesoporous silica nanospheres as an adsorbent to remove doxorubicin (DOX) from aqueous solution. The surface and structural properties of mesoporous silica nanospheres were investigated using BET, SEM, XRD, TEM, ζ potential, and point of zero charge analysis. To optimize DOX removal from aqueous solution, a Box-Behnken surface statistical design (BBD) with four times factors, four levels, and response surface modeling (RSM) was used. A high amount of adsorptivity from DOX (804.84 mg/g) was successfully done under the following conditions: mesoporous silica nanospheres dose = 0.02 g/25 mL; pH = 6; shaking speed = 200 rpm; and adsorption time = 100 min. The study of isotherms demonstrated how well the Langmuir equation and the experimental data matched. According to thermodynamic characteristics, the adsorption of DOX on mesoporous silica nanospheres was endothermic and spontaneous. The increase in solution temperature also aided in the removal of DOX. The kinetic study showed that the model suited the pseudo-second-order. The suggested adsorption method could recycle mesoporous silica nanospheres five times, with a modest reduction in its ability for adsorption. The most important feature of our adsorbent is that it can be recycled five times without losing its efficiency.

Quantum and experimental investigation of the application of Crassostrea gasar (mangrove oyster) shell-based CaO nanoparticles as adsorbent and photocatalyst for the removal of procaine penicillin from aqueous solution

The present study was designed to synthesize and characterize calcium oxide nanoparticles (using mangrove oyster shell as a precursor) and apply the synthesized nanoparticles as a photocatalyst to degrade procaine penicillin in an aqueous solution. The photocatalyst exhibited an average band gap of 4.42 eV, showed a maximum wavelength of absorbance in the UV region (i.e., 280 nm), and is a microporous nanoparticle with a particle diameter of 50 nm. The photocatalyzed degradation of the drug was conducted under natural sunlight, and the influence of parameters such as the period of contact, catalyst load, pH, initial drug concentration, and ionic strength was investigated concerning the degradation profile. The results obtained from response surface analysis indicated that an optimum degradation efficiency of about 93% can be obtained at a concentration, pH, and catalyst dosage of 0.125 M, 2, and 0.20 g respectively, at 0.902 desirabilities. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood, modified Freundlich, parabolic diffusion, pseudo-first-/second-order, and zero-, first-, and second-order kinetic parameters were tested to ascertain the best model that best described the experimental data. Consequently, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood, modified Freundlich, and pseudo-second-order models were accepted based on the minimum error and higher R² values. Based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate constants for adsorption and photodegradation as well as the evaluated valence bond potential, the degradation of the drug first proceeded through the mechanism of adsorption and followed by the oxidation of the drug by superoxide (generated from the interaction of electrons that generated by through the absorption of UV radiation). The quantum chemical calculation gave evidence that pointed towards the establishment of strong agreement with experimental data and also showed that the carboxyl functional group in the drug is the target site for adsorption and subsequent degradation.

Novel 1,4 benzothiazine 3-one derivatives as anticonvulsant agents: Design, synthesis, biological evaluation and computational studies

In this study, two series of novel 1,4-benzothiazine-3-one derivatives with alkyl substitution (series 1: 4a-4f) and aryl substitution (series 2: 4g-4l) were designed and synthesized based on the chemical scaffolds of perampanel, hydantoins, progabide and etifoxine as anti-convulsant agents. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by FT-IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. Anti-convulsant effect of the compounds was examined through intraperitoneal pentylenetetrazol (i.p. PTZ) induced epilepsy mouse models. Compound 4h (4-(4-bromo-benzyl)- 4 H-benzo[b] [1,4] thiazin-3(4 H)-one) demonstrated a promising activity toward chemically-induced seizure experiment. Molecular dynamics simulation on GABA-Aergic receptors as a plausible mechanism were also done to achieve the binding and orientation of compounds in the active site of the target to evaluate the results of docking and experimental studies. The computational results were confirmed the biological activity. DFT study of 4c and 4h was performed on B3LYP/6-311 G^** level of theory. Reactivity descriptors such as HOMO, LUMO, electron affinity, ionization potential, chemical potential, hardness and softness were studied in detail and show that 4h has higher activity than 4c. Also, the frequency calculations were performed on the same level of theory and the results are in line with experimental data. Moreover, in silico ADMET properties were done to establish a relationship between the physiochemical data of the designed compounds and their in-vivo activity. Appropriate plasma protein binding and high blood-brain barrier penetration are the main features of desired in-vivo performance.

Current Trends of Analytical Techniques for Total Alkalinity Measurement in Water Samples: A Review

Increasing acidity of seawater caused by increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide absorbed into the seawater attracted the interest of researchers due to increased concern on the deterioration of marine systems and food supply to humans. Total alkalinity (TA) is one of the important parameters in determining carbonate chemistry and is described as the capacity of the sample to neutralize acids. Over the last two decades, many analytical techniques have been developed to determine TA. This article presents a review of different analytical techniques including titration, colorimetric, spectrophotometric, and potentiometric analyses in measuring TA. Among these analytical techniques, potentiometry analysis, which utilizes electrode systems such as glass electrode and ion-selective electrode used as indicator electrodes, is the most used technique. Important features such as principle, limitations, and challenges of the involved technique are discussed in detail.

Baicalin-Current Trends in Detection Methods and Health-Promoting Properties

Baicalin (7-D-glucuronic acid-5,6-dihydroxyflavone) belongs to natural flavonoids extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis, the plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been proven that baicalin has various pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and anti-apoptotic ones. However, it is essential not only to determine the medical usefulness of baicalin, but also to find and develop the most effective methods for its extraction and detection. Therefore, the aim of this review was to summarize the current methods of detection and identification of baicalin and to present the medical applications of baicalin and the underlying mechanisms of its action. Based on the review of the latest literature, it can be concluded that liquid chromatography alone or together with mass spectrometry is the most commonly used method for the determination of baicalin. Recently, also new electrochemical methods have been established, e.g., biosensors with fluorescence, which have better detection limits, sensitivity, and selectivity.

Nano-Sized Selenium Maintains Performance and Improves Health Status and Antioxidant Potential While Not Compromising Ultrastructure of Breast Muscle and Liver in Chickens

The poultry industry is looking for the most effective sources of selenium (Se) for commercial use. Over the past five years, nano-Se has attracted a great deal of attention in terms of its production, characterisation and possible application in poultry production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary levels of inorganic and organic Se, selenised yeast and nano forms of selenium on breast meat quality, liver and blood markers of antioxidants, the ultrastructure of tissue and the health status of chickens. A total of 300 one-day-old chicks Ross 308 were divided into 4 experimental groups, in 5 replications, with 15 birds per replication. Birds were fed the following treatments: a standard commercial diet containing inorganic Se in the form of inorganic Se at the level of 0.3 mg/kg diet and an experimental diet with an increased level of Se (0.5 mg/kg diet). The use of other forms of Se (nano-Se) versus sodium selenate significantly influences (p ≤ 0.05) a higher collagen content and does not impair physico-chemical properties in the breast muscle or the growth performance of the chickens. In addition, the use of other forms of selenium at an increased dose versus sodium selenate affected (p ≤ 0.01) the elongation of sarcomeres in the pectoral muscle while reducing (p ≤ 0.01) mitochondrial damage in hepatocytes and improving (p ≤ 0.05) oxidative indices. The use of nano-Se at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg feed has high bioavailability and low toxicity without negatively affecting the growth performance and while improving breast muscle quality parameters and the health status of the chickens.

Potential Utilization of Ground Eggshells as a Biofiller for Natural Rubber Biocomposites

The aim of this work was application of ground eggshells in various amounts by weight as a biofiller for natural rubber (NR) biocomposites. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), ionic liquids (ILs), i.e., 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmiCl) and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (DmiBr), and silanes, i.e., (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) and bis [3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPTS), were used to increase the activity of ground eggshells in the elastomer matrix and to ameliorate the cure characteristics and properties of NR biocomposites. The influence of ground eggshells, CTAB, ILs, and silanes on the crosslink density, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of NR vulcanizates and their resistance to prolonged thermo-oxidation were explored. The amount of eggshells affected the curing characteristics and crosslink density of the rubber composites and therefore their tensile properties. Vulcanizates filled with eggshells demonstrated higher crosslink density than the unfilled sample by approximately 30%, whereas CTAB and ILs increased the crosslink density by 40-60% compared to the benchmark. Owing to the enhanced crosslink density and uniform dispersion of ground eggshells, vulcanizates containing CTAB and ILs exhibited tensile strength improved by approximately 20% compared to those without these additives. Moreover, the hardness of these vulcanizates was increased by 35-42%. Application of both the biofiller and the tested additives did not significantly affect the thermal stability of cured NR compared to the unfilled benchmark. Most importantly, the eggshell-filled vulcanizates showed improved resistance to thermo-oxidative aging compared to the unfilled NR.

DFT investigations and molecular docking as potent inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 main protease of 4-phenylpyrimidine

In this work, quantum chemical descriptors and a vibrational analysis of 4-Phenylpyrimidine (4-PPy) were also investigated. Through conformational analysis, the most stable conformer can be determined. The geometry of the molecular structure was optimized by using the density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. The theoretically obtained FT-IR and FT-Raman spectral data agree with the experimental results. UV-Vis was done in the gas phase along with different solvents by the TD-DFT method and the PCM solvent model. Molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbital analysis, nonlinear optical properties, and global chemical reactivity parameters were described through the DFT method. Besides, the chemical implications of a molecule were explained using an electron localization function and a local orbital locator. We attempted to detect the antiviral activity of the 4-PPy compound by predicting molecular docking into coronavirus 2 (SARS-n-CoV-2) protein structures (6LU7, 6M03, and 6W63), because COVID-19 is known to have serious adverse effects in all areas of human life worldwide, and possible drugs need to be investigated for this. The results of the docking simulation demonstrate good affinities for binding to the receptors.

Analytical Methods for Oxalate Quantification: The Ubiquitous Organic Anion

Oxalate is a divalent organic anion that affects many biological and commercial processes. It is derived from plant sources, such as spinach, rhubarb, tea, cacao, nuts, and beans, and therefore is commonly found in raw or processed food products. Oxalate can also be made endogenously by humans and other mammals as a byproduct of hepatic enzymatic reactions. It is theorized that plants use oxalate to store calcium and protect against herbivory. Clinically, oxalate is best known to be a major component of kidney stones, which commonly contain calcium oxalate crystals. Oxalate can induce an inflammatory response that decreases the immune system's ability to remove renal crystals. When formulated with platinum as oxaliplatin (an anticancer drug), oxalate has been proposed to cause neurotoxicity and nerve pain. There are many sectors of industry that are hampered by oxalate, and others that depend on it. For example, calcium oxalate is troublesome in the pulp industry and the alumina industry as it deposits on machinery. On the other hand, oxalate is a common active component of rust removal and cleaning products. Due to its ubiquity, there is interest in developing efficient methods to quantify oxalate. Over the past four decades, many diverse methods have been reported. These approaches include electrochemical detection, liquid chromatography or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, enzymatic degradation of oxalate with oxalate oxidase and detection of hydrogen peroxide produced, and indicator displacement-based methods employing fluorescent or UV light-absorbing compounds. Enhancements in sensitivity have been reported for both electrochemical and mass-spectrometry-based methods as recently as this year. Indicator-based methods have realized a surge in interest that continues to date. The diversity of these approaches, in terms of instrumentation, sample preparation, and sensitivity, has made it clear that no single method will work best for every purpose. This review describes the strengths and limitations of each method, and may serve as a reference for investigators to decide which approach is most suitable for their work.

Modified carbon paste ion selective electrode for determining Cr(iii) ions in aqueous solutions and some real samples using tetragonal zirconia nanoparticles

Tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO₂) nanoparticles (ionophore) are used in newly designed and improved ion selective electrodes for chromium ion detection as an alternative, low-cost, high-precision, and selectivity method. Tetragonal zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified co-precipitation technique and calcined at 1000 °C for an hour. The phase composition, surface area, microstructure, pore size and particle size of synthesized t-ZrO₂ nanoparticles were examined using the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with an EDAX unit, respectively. Results from XRD showed that the t-zirconia was synthesized and have nanocrystallites size about 20.2 nm. The nano size of t-ZrO₂ was confirmed by the SEM and TEM (the particle size between 26.48 and 40.4 nm), the mesoporous character (average pore size about 4.868 nm) and large surface area (76.2802 m² g^-1) was confirmed by BET analysis. The paste composition with 67.3 : 30.5 : 2.7 (wt%) graphite, t-ZrO₂, and TCP, respectively, exhibited the best results. With a detection limit of 1.0 × 10^-8 mol L^-1, the electrode displayed a good Nernstian slope of 19.50 ± 0.10 mV decade^-1 over the concentration range from 1.0 × 10^-2 to 1.0 × 10^-8 mol L^-1 of Cr(iii) ions. The built-in sensor displayed a quick response time (7 s), was highly thermally stable in the range of 10 to 60 °C without departing from Nernstian behaviour and could be used for about 60 days in the pH range of 2.0 to 6.0. The electrode demonstrated excellent selectivity for the Cr(iii) ion towards a variety of metal ions. For chromium ion determination, numerous spiked real samples, including honey, water, tea, coffee, milk, cheese, and cosmetics, were used. Validation methods were used, and the results showed that there is no significant difference between the two methods (ICP and ISE) at a 95% confidence level. In several real water samples, the estimated limits of detection, limits of quantification, percent recovery, standard deviation, and relative standard deviation showed the effectiveness of the proposed electrode in the potentiometric detection of Cr(iii) ions.

Liquid-phase benzylation of toluene by benzyl alcohol over micro-mesoporous hierarchical mordenite zeolite

In this work, post-synthetic effective acid (HNO₃) and base (NaOH) etching technique are used to create hierarchical mordenite having different pore structure. The powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) technique was used to confirm the crystalline structure of the base-modified and acid-modified mordenite. Field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was employed to confirm the structural morphology of the materials. The modified mordenite was further characterised by inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and acid-base titration, to confirm the structural integrity, presence of active acidic sites, and other vital parameters. The structure was well conserved after the change, as evidenced by the characterisation. The toluene benzylation with benzyl alcohol using hierarchical mordenite and H-mordenite produced mono-benzylated toluene. Comparison between acid treated, base treated, and H-mordenite was done. All samples were catalytically active as proved by the catalytic result in the benzylation reaction. The results show that the base alteration dramatically enhances the mesoporous surface area of H-mordenite. Furthermore, the acid-treated mordenite had the highest benzyl alcohol conversion (75%), but the base-modified mordenite had benzyl alcohol conversion of 73% with the highest mono-benzylated toluene selectivity (61%). The process was further optimised by varying the reaction temperature, duration, and catalyst quantity. Gas chromatography (GC) was used to evaluate the reaction products and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to confirm them. Introduction of mesoporosity in the microporous mordenite was found to have significant effect on their catalytic activity.

Improving capacity for phytoremediation of Vetiver grass and Indian mustard in heavy metal (Al and Mn) contaminated water through the application of clay minerals

One of the consequences of mining is the release of heavy metals into the environment, especially water bodies. Phytoremediation of areas contaminated by heavy metals using Vetiver grass and Indian mustard is cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This study aimed at enhancing remediation of heavy metal contaminated water through the simultaneous hybrid application of clay minerals (attapulgite and bentonite) and Vetiver grass or Indian mustard. A 21-day greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the clay minerals to improve heavy metal phytoremediation. The highest accumulation of aluminium (Al) by Vetiver grass was 371.8 mg/kg in the BT2.5VT treatment, while for Mn, the highest accumulation of 34.71 mg/kg was observed in the AT1VT treatment. However, Indian mustard showed no significant uptake of heavy metals, but suffered heavy metal toxicity despite the addition of clay minerals. From this study, it was evident that bentonite added at 2.5% (w/v) could improve the phytoremediation capacity of Vetiver grass for Al and Mn polluted water. The current laboratory-scale findings provided a basis for field trials earmarked for remediation in a post-mining coal environment in South Africa. This remediation approach can also be adopted in other places.

Phytochemical profiling, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities of hydroethanolic extracts of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) fruit and pulp

Phenolic compounds in prickly pear [Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Mill.] are known to contribute to the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the prickly pear. The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidants and in vitro antimicrobial potential in the hydroethanolic extracts of different parts (fruit, cladode, and pulp) of prickly pear. Different polyphenolic compounds were analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography. The results indicated that cladode possessed a higher quantity of phenolics compared with that observed in fruit and pulp. The most important phenolic compound in high quantity was gallic acid (66.19 μg/g) in cladode. The 100% aqueous extract of cladode exhibited the highest antioxidant (92%) and antimicrobial activities against Salmonella typhi (3.40 mg/ml), Helicobacter pylori (1.37 mg/ml), Escherichia coli (1.41 mg/ml), and Staphylococcus aureus (1.41 mg/ml). Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that antioxidant activity and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) responses had a significant negative correlation with each other. Overall, the current results provided basic data for choosing prickly pear cladode with high antioxidant capacity for the development and consumption of antioxidant-based alternative medicines and value addition of formulated foods.

Investigations on evaluation of marine macroalgae Dictyota bartayresiana oil for industrial scale production of biodiesel through technoeconomic analysis

The investigation on utilizing macroalgae for industrial scale biodiesel production is an imperative action needed for commercialization. In the present research work, the biooil from marine macroalgae Dictyota bartayresiana was used for biodiesel production using calcium oxide nanocatalyst synthesized using waste collected from building demolition site. The optimization results obtained were the calcination temperature 573 °C, concentration of catalyst 5.62%, methanol to oil molar ratio 14.36:1, temperature 55.7 °C and time 67.57 min for the transesterification with the biodiesel yield of 89.6%. The techno-economic aspects of biodiesel production were investigated for 20 MT/batch. The return on investment and internal rate of return from the biodiesel production plant was found to be 25.39% and 31.13% respectively. The plant payback period was about 3.94 years with a positive NPV value of about 14,053,000 $/yr. Thus, Dictyota bartayresiana biomass can be efficiently used for the sustainable production of biodiesel.

Maturation of demineralized arabinogalactan-proteins from Acacia seyal gum in dry state: Aggregation kinetics and structural properties of aggregates

The aggregation in dry state of mineral-loaded arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) from Acacia seyal gum (GA) generally occurs above 70 °C. This study focuses on the aggregation sensitivity of AGPs after their demineralization. The dry incubation in mild temperature (25 °C to 70 °C) of demineralized AGPs induced the formation of aggregates, not observed with GA. AGPs aggregated following a self-assembly mechanism for which temperature only modulated the aggregation rate. The activation energy was around 90-100 kJ·mol^-1 that could correspond to chemical condensation reactions induced by the AGPs surface dehydration. The aggregation kinetics were characterized by the formation of soluble aggregates during the first times of incubation, whose molar mass increased from 1 · 10⁶ g·mol^-1 to 6.7 · 10⁶ g·mol^-1 (SEC MALS) or 12 · 10⁶ g·mol^-1 (AF4 MALS) after 1.66 days of dry heating at 40 °C. These soluble aggregates revealed they adopted a similar conformation to that of not aggregated AGPs with a ν_h value around 0.45. Above 1.66 days at 40 °C, the soluble aggregates grew up to form microparticles with sizes ranging from 10 to around 200 μm. This study highlighted the protective role of cations from AGPs whose demineralization increased their sensibility to dry heating and their chemical reactivity for aggregation.

Application of Spectroscopy Techniques for Monitoring (Bio)Catalytic Processes in Continuously Operated Microreactor Systems

In the last twenty years, the application of microreactors in chemical and biochemical industrial processes has increased significantly. The use of microreactor systems ensures efficient process intensification due to the excellent heat and mass transfer within the microchannels. Monitoring the concentrations in the microchannels is critical for a better understanding of the physical and chemical processes occurring in micromixers and microreactors. Therefore, there is a growing interest in performing in-line and on-line analyses of chemical and/or biochemical processes. This creates tremendous opportunities for the incorporation of spectroscopic detection techniques into production and processing lines in various industries. In this work, an overview of current applications of ultraviolet–visible, infrared, Raman spectroscopy, NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS, and ESI-MS for monitoring (bio)catalytic processes in continuously operated microreactor systems is presented. The manuscript includes a description of the advantages and disadvantages of the analytical methods listed, with particular emphasis on the chemometric methods used for spectroscopic data analysis.

Dissolvable sodium alginate-based antibacterial wound dressing patches: Design, characterization, and in vitro biological studies

The treatment of infected wounds in patients with highly sensitive skin is challenging. Some of the available wound dressings cause further skin tear and bleeding upon removal thereby hindering the healing process. In this study, dissolvable antibacterial wound dressing patches loaded with cephalexin monohydrate were prepared from different amounts of sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by the solvent casting evaporation technique. The patches displayed good tensile strength (3.83-13.83 MPa), appropriate thickness (0.09 to 0.31 mm) and good flexibility (74-98 %) suitable for the skin. The patches displayed good biodegradability and low moisture uptake suitable to prevent microbial invasion on the wound dressings upon storage. The release profile of the drug from the patches was sustained in the range of 47-80 % for 48 h, revealing their capability to inhibit bacterial infection. The biological assay showed that the patches did not induce cytotoxic effects on HaCaT cells, revealing good biocompatibility. The antimicrobial effect of the patches on the different strains of bacteria used in the study was significant. The cell migration (66.7-74.3 %) to the scratched gap was promising revealing the patches' capability to promote wound closure. The results obtained show that the wound dressings are potential materials for the treatment of infected wounds.

Microbial Diversity Using a Metataxonomic Approach, Associated with Coffee Fermentation Processes in the Department of Quindío, Colombia

Coffee fermentation is a complex process, mainly involving bacteria and yeasts, whose interaction influences beverage quality. The way this process is conducted affects the interactions between these microorganisms. To identify microbial diversity in fermenting coffee, samples were collected from 20 farms in the Department of Quindío, Colombia. Metataxonomic analyses using high-throughput sequencing and volatile organic compound identification in green coffee beans were performed with HS-SPME and GC-MS. Potential relationships between some families and genera with different fermentation types and coffee quality were evaluated. In our results, samples presented with high richness and diversity were greater for bacteria than for yeast/fungi. The Enterobacteriaceae family dominated at the beginning of fermentation, while Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, Gluconobacter, and Acetobacter genera dominated at the end, a finding related to pH reduction and final coffee quality. Overall, 167 fungal families were identified, but Saccharomyceaceae dominated from the beginning. Alcohols and esters were the main chemical classes identified in green coffee bean samples from these fermentations. These results will facilitate the identification process conditions that influence the presence and abundance of microorganisms related to quality as well as contributing to the design of strategies to conduct fermentations to improve the final quality of coffee.

Tensiometric and rheological investigations of single and mixed systems consisting of cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in aqueous solutions

The surface tension (σ), critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface excess (Γ), minimum area occupied by a surfactant molecule (A min), the viscosity and oscillatory rheological studies of aqueous solutions containing cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) at molar fractions of 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 and 25 °C were presented. CAPB and SDBS were not found to interact synergistically in water at any of the molar fractions studied. This is due to the fact that the critical micelle concentrations of these mixtures were higher than those predicted by Clint’s equation, indicating an antagonism that rarely occurs in mixed amphoteric/anionic surfactant systems. The minimum area occupied by a surfactant molecule (A min) was reduced in CAPB/SDBS mixtures compared to unmixed surfactants. In contrast, the viscosity of the mixed CAPB/SDBS system increased significantly from 1.0 mPa s to a maximum of 36.0 Pa s at higher CAPB mole fractions (0.5–0.8). The rheograms obtained from the oscillation measurements of the viscous CAPB/SDBS solutions are characteristic of wormlike micelles (WLMs) according to the Maxwell model. The results of this surprising binary CAPB/SDBS surfactant mixing system are presented and discussed.

Synthesis of nanomagnetite/copper oxide/potassium carrageenan nanocomposite for the adsorption and Photo-Fenton degradation of Safranin-O: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

In the current study, a novel nanomaterial called nanomagnetite/copper oxide/potassium carrageenan nanocomposite (MKCO) was fabricated to include Fenton (nanomagnetite, NM) and Fenton-like reagent (copper oxide nanoparticles, NCO) in a matrix of potassium carrageenan biopolymer. The prepared solid materials were characterized by different physicochemical techniques, such as TGA, N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, TEM, XRD, DRS, pHPZC, and FTIR. The prepared MKCO showed unique properties like higher specific surface area of 652.50 m2/g, pore radius of 1.19 nm, pHPZC equals 7.80, and the presence of different surface chemical functional groups. Under various application conditions, comparative experiments between Safranin-O dye (SO) adsorption and Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation were conducted. After 24 h, MKCO had a maximum adsorption capacity of 384.61 mg/g at 42 °C, while the Photo-Fenton oxidation process took only 10 min to totally decompose 93% of SO at 21 °C. Based on the higher values of correlation coefficients, Langmuir’s adsorption model is the best-fitted adsorption model for SO onto all the prepared solid materials. Studies on SO adsorption’s kinetics and thermodynamics show that it is physisorption and that it operates according to endothermic, spontaneous, and PFO model processes. While, PFO, endothermic, and non-spontaneous processes are satisfied by the catalytic decomposition of SO. After five application cycles, MKCO demonstrated good catalyst reusability with a 3.4% decrease in degrading efficiency. For lower contaminant concentrations and shorter application times, Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation of organic pollutants is more effective than adsorption.

Ascorbic Acid Content and Antioxidant Activities of White and Brown Teff [Eragrostic tef (Zucc.)Trotter] Grains and Injera

Teff [Eragrostis tef (Zuccagni) Trotter] is a cereal grain originating in Ethiopia as a staple food for millions of people. Its grain is a gluten-free superfood and got acceptance as a medicinal ingredient. Therefore, it is worthwhile to determine the antioxidative activities and L-ascorbic acid contents of teff grain and its baked food (injera). This study aimed to determine the ascorbic acid contents and antioxidant activities in the aqueous extract of the white and brown teff grains and their injera samples using iodimetric titration and UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods, respectively. The ascorbic acid contents in the white and brown teff ranged from 67.9–112.6 mg/100 g and 69.2–117.2 mg/100 g, respectively, and those in injera of the selected teff samples ranged from 30.5–32.9 mg/100 g and 37.3–43.0 mg/100 g, respectively. The antioxidant activities ranged from 1.26–7.04 μmol AAE/g for the white teff grains, 1.44–6.29 μmol AAE/g for the brown teff grains, 1.81–2.47 μmol AAE/g for white teff injera, and 3.89–4.86 μmol AAE/g for the brown teff injera samples. Findings of the present study have revealed that white teff and brown teff grains and their injera were found to have a higher content of ascorbic acid than commonly consumed grains and vegetables. No significant difference (α = 0.05) has been observed between the two varieties of teff grains with respect to the ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activities. However, there was a statistically significant difference (α = 0.05) in the ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activities between the teff grains and their injera samples. Therefore, this study indicated that teff grains and injera are rich in ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activities as compared to other cereal grains and are very crucial for human nutrition and health.

Synthesis of Imino Stabilized Iron Oxide Nanosensor for Selective Detection of Lead Ions

The present work describes the successful preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles (NSB1) stabilized with 4-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)benzoic acid. The characterization has been achieved through ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis), fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with electron dispersive X-ray elemental analysis (EDX). These magnetic nanoparticles have exhibited significant chemosensing properties in the aqueous media to screen Cr3+, Cd2+, Li+, Co2+, Al3+, Pb2+, Ni2+ and Sr2+ ions. However, lead (Pb2+) ions have shown the highest selectivity as compared to other metal ions without any interference in the competitive ion study. The detection limit of Pb2+ ions was found to be 1.7 µM by this nanosensor. The binding ratio and stoichiometry was found to be 1:1 as measured by Job’s plot. The binding strength was also computed through Benesei-Hildebrand equation.

Effect of Sauropus androgynus L. Merr. on dengue virus-2: An in vitro and in silico study

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Sauropus androgynus L. Merr. (Euphorbiaceae) commonly known as "multigreen" and "multivitamin" is consumed as a vegetable and used in traditional medicine to relieve fever.

AIM OF THE STUDY

This in vitro study is aimed to explore the activities of the lipophilic fraction of the leaves of S. androgynus (LFSA) against dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses and malaria (P. falciparum strain 3D7) parasite.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The LFSA was analyzed by using GC-FID and GC-MS. The antiviral activity of LFSA was studied using the Vero CCL-81 cell line. The cytotoxicity assay was performed using 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT). Focus forming unit (FFU), cell-based immunofluorescence (IFA) assays, and quantitative RT-PCR, were used to determine and confirm antiviral activity against DENV and CHIKV. The antiparasitic activity of LFSA was carried out against P. falciparum strain 3D7 grown in fresh O+ human erythrocytes culture.

RESULTS

Twelve compounds were identified in LFSA using GC/MS. The most abundant compound was squalene (36.9%), followed by vitamin E (12.5%) and linolenic acid (10.2%). Significant reduction in DENV titre was observed under pre- and post-infection treatment conditions at a concentration of 31.25 μg/ml, but no anti-malarial and anti-CHIKV activity was observed. The Autodock-Vina-based in-silico docking study revealed that β-sitosterol could form a strong interaction with the DENV E glycoprotein.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that LFSA can inhibit DENV infection and might act as a potent prophylactic/therapeutic agent against DENV-2. In-silico results suggested that β-sitosterol may block the viral entry by inhibiting the fusion process.

Chemical Composition, Enantiomeric Distribution and Biological Activity of Essential Oil from Morella pubescens (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Wilbur

The species Morella pubescens, commonly known as wax laurel, is a tree belonging to the Myricaceae family that can be found from Costa Rica to Bolivia. In this study, the chemical composition, enantiomeric distribution, and biological activity of essential oil isolated from the leaves of this species was determined. Hydrodistillation was used to isolate the essential oil (EO). Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was used to determine the qualitative composition, gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector was used to determine quantitative composition, and gas chromatography on an enantioselective column was used to determine enantiomeric distribution. The broth microdilution method was employed to assess the antibacterial capacity of the essential oil against seven opportunistic microorganisms, including three Gram-positive cocci bacteria, a Gram-positive bacilli bacterium and three Gram-negative bacilli bacteria. 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical cation and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydryl free radical were used as reagents to determine the antioxidant activity of essential oil. The spectrophotometric method was used to analyze the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect of the essential oil. The extraction method afforded a low yield of around 0.076 ± 0.008% (v/w). Fifty-eight chemical compounds, which represent 97.9% of the total composition, were identified in the essential oil. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were the most representative group with 24 compounds (67.8%). The principal constituents were (E)-caryophyllene (27.5 ± 1.3%), limonene (11.8 ± 0.6%), δ-selinene (9.1 ± 0.2%), β-selinene (8.0 ± 0.2%), selina-3,7(11)-diene (5.3 ± 0.2%) and germacrene B (5.0 ± 0.5%). Three pairs of enantiomers were identified in the essential oil of Morella pubescens. Essential oil presented strong activity against the bacterium Enterococcus faecium (ATCC 27270) with an MIC of 250 μg/mL. The antioxidant activity of essential oil was very strong in the ABTS method with an SC₅₀ of 46.4 ± 1.0 µg/mL and was strong in the DPPH method with an SC₅₀ of 237.1 ± 1.8 µg/mL. Additionally, the essential oil reported strong anticholinesterase activity with an IC₅₀ of 133.5 ± 1.06 µg/mL.

Bioaccumulation and Biota-Sediment Accumulation Factor of Metals and Metalloids in Edible Fish: A Systematic Review in Ethiopian Surface Waters

Metals and metalloids pollution of Ethiopian surface water is becoming an environmental issue. Bioaccumulation and Biota-Sediment Accumulation Factor (BAF and BSAF) are used to quantify the bioaccumulation of contaminants from water and sediment to biota. The present study aimed to determine the BAF and BSAF of metals and metalloids in different surface waters of Ethiopia. Furthermore, the ecological and human health risks were also examined. Generally, 902 peer-reviewed papers from 2005 to 2022 were searched using search engines. The most common types of edible fish species in studied surface waters of Ethiopia were Oreochromis niloticus, Clarias gariepinus, and Barbus intermedius. The concentration of metals and metalloids were higher in sediment than in water and in carnivorous fish than in herbivorous fish. The BSAF of Se in all fish species was greater than 1. Oreochromis niloticus was a bio-concentrator of As and Se. The dissolved concentration of Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni were higher compared to the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority and the European Union; Organization of Economic and Co-Operation Development environmental water quality standard guidelines for inland surface freshwater bodies. Likewise, in sediment, the concentration of Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Cr were above Tolerable Effect Concentration values and Cd, Ni, and Cr were above Probable Effect Concentration levels when compared to the United States Consensus-Based Sediment Quality Guidelines for freshwater which indicates that these metals may pose risk to aquatic organisms. Consumption of raw water and fish contaminated with the detected metals and metalloids is not associated with any diseases. However, local consumers who live close to each freshwater ecosystem may become more exposed to health risk hazards. The findings of this study will provide baseline information on BAF and BSAF of metals and metalloids in surface waters and will contribute to the effective monitoring of environmental quality.

SERS-based detection of 5-S-cysteinyl-dopamine as a novel biomarker of Parkinson's disease in artificial biofluids

The early detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) can significantly improve treatment and quality of life in patients. 5-S-Cysteinyl-dopamine (CDA) is a key metabolite of high relevance for the early detection of PD. Therefore, its sensitive detection with fast and robust methods can improve its use as a biomarker. In this work we show the potentialities of label-free SERS spectroscopy in detecting CDA in aqueous solutions and artificial biofluids, with a simple, fast and sensitive approach. We present a detailed experimental SERS band assignment of CDA employing silver nanoparticle (AgNP) substrates in aqueous media, which was supported by theoretical calculations and simulated Raman and SERS spectra. The tentative orientation of CDA over the AgNP was also studied, indicating that catechol and carboxylic acid play a key role in the metallic surface adsorption. Moreover, we showed that SERS can allow us to identify CDA in aqueous media at low concentration, leading to the identification of some of its characteristic bands in pure water and in synthetic cerebrospinal fluid (SCSF) below 1 × 10^-8 M, while its band identification in simulated urine (SUR) can be reached at 1 × 10^-7 M. In conclusion, we show that CDA can be suitably detected by means of label-free SERS spectroscopy, which can significantly improve its sensitive detection for further analytical studies as a novel biomarker and further clinical diagnosis in PD patients.

Exploring novel derivatives of isatin-based Schiff bases as multi-target agents: design, synthesis, in vitro biological evaluation, and in silico ADMET analysis with molecular modeling simulations

Recently, scientists developed a powerful strategy called "one drug-multiple targets" to discover vital and unique therapies to fight the most challenging diseases. Novel derivatives of isatin-based Schiff bases 2-7 have been synthesized by the reaction of 3-hydrazino-isatin (1) with aryl aldehydes, hetero-aryl aldehydes, and dialdehydes. The structure of the synthesized derivatives was proved by physical and spectral analysis. Additionally, in vitro biological studies were performed, including antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-Alzheimer, and anti-arthritic activities. The four derivatives 3b, 5a, 5b, and 5c possess the highest activities. Among the four potent derivatives, compound 5a exhibited the highest antioxidant (TAC = 68.02 ± 0.15 mg gallic acid per g; IRP = 50.39 ± 0.11) and scavenging activities (ABTS = 53.98 ± 0.12% and DPPH = 8.65 ± 0.02 μg mL-1). Furthermore, compound 5a exhibited an α-amylase inhibitory percentage of 57.64 ± 0.13% near the acarbose (ACA = 69.11 ± 0.15%) and displayed inhibitor activity of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme = 36.38 ± 0.08%. Moreover, our work extended to determining the anti-arthritic effect, and compound 5a revealed good inhibitor activities with very close values for proteinase denaturation (PDI) = 39.59 ± 0.09% and proteinase inhibition (PI) = 36.39 ± 0.08%, compared to diclofenac sodium PDI = 49.33 ± 0.11% and PI = 41.88 ± 0.09%. Additionally, the quantum chemical calculations, including HOMO, LUMO, and energy band gap were determined, and in silico ADMET properties were predicted, and their probability was recorded. Finally, molecular docking simulations were performed inside α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase enzymes.

Selective and Generic Photocatalytic Oxidation of Alcohol with Pd-TiO2 Thin Films: Butanols to Butanal/Butanone with Different Morphologies of Pd and 0.5θPt -Pd Counterparts

The present study reports on the photocatalytic oxidation of butanols to butanal/butanone using thin film form of facet-dependent nano-Pd supported on commercial TiO₂ under one-sun condition and demonstrates the generic nature. Pd-nanocube (Pd_NC (100)), Pd-truncated octahedron (Pd_TO (100) and (111)), polycrystalline (Pd_PC ), and their counterparts with half-a-monolayer Pt-coated on Pd (0.5θ_Pt -Pd)) have been used as co-catalyst. A potentially scalable thin film form of Pd/TiO₂ photocatalyst, prepared by drop-casting method, has been employed to study oxidation of n-butanol, 2-butanol, and iso-butanol to corresponding aldehyde/ketone. 100% selectivity is demonstrated to respective aldehyde/ketone with any catalyst used in the present study with varying degree of butanols conversion by NMR. 0.5θ_Pt -Pd_TO /TiO₂ shows the highest conversion of 2-butanol to butanone (13.6% in 4 h). Continuous 10 h of reaction with the most active 0.5θ_Pt -Pd_TO /P25 catalyst demonstrates 31% conversion of 2-butanol to butanone, and catalyst recyclability has been demonstrated. The present protocol can be scalable to large scales to maximize the conversion in direct sunlight. Due to its generic nature, the current method can also be applied to many other alcohols and substrate molecules.

Treatment of Semiconductor Wastewater Containing Tetramethylammonium Hydroxide (TMAH) Using Nanofiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and Membrane Capacitive Deionization

As the semiconductor industry has grown tremendously over the last decades, its environmental impact has become a growing concern, including the withdrawal of fresh water and the generation of harmful wastewater. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), one of the toxic compounds inevitably found in semiconductor wastewater, should be removed before the wastewater is discharged. However, there are few affordable technologies available to remove TMAH from semiconductor wastewater. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare different treatment options, such as Membrane Capacitive Deionization (MCDI), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Nanofiltration (NF), for the treatment of semiconductor wastewater containing TMAH. A series of bench-scale experimental setups were conducted to investigate the removal efficiencies of TMAH, TDS, and TOC. The results confirmed that the MCDI process showed its great ability as well as RO to remove them, while the NF could not make a sufficient removal under identical recovery conditions. MCDI showed higher removals of monovalent ions, including TMA+, than divalent ions. Moreover, the removal of TMA+ by MCDI was higher under the basic solution than under both neutral and acidic conditions. These results were the first to demonstrate that MCDI has significant potential for treating semiconductor wastewater that contains TMAH.
