A systematic review on understanding the mechanistic pathways and clinical aspects of natural CDK inhibitors on cancer progression.: Unlocking cellular and biochemical mechanisms

Cell division, differentiation, and controlled cell death are all regulated by phosphorylation, a key biological function. This mechanism is controlled by a variety of enzymes, with cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) being particularly important in phosphorylating proteins at serine and threonine sites. CDKs, which contain 20 unique components, serve an important role in regulating vital physiological functions such as cell cycle progression and gene transcription. Methodologically, an extensive literature search was performed using reputable databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Keywords encompassed "cyclin kinase," "cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors," "CDK inhibitors," "natural products," and "cancer therapy." The inclusion criteria, focused on relevance, publication date, and language, ensured a thorough representation of the most recent research in the field, encompassing articles published from January 2015 to September 2023. Categorization of CDKs into those regulating transcription and those orchestrating cell cycle phases provides a comprehensive understanding of their diverse functions. Ongoing clinical trials featuring CDK inhibitors, notably CDK7 and CDK4/6 inhibitors, illuminate their promising potential in various cancer treatments. This review undertakes a thorough investigation of CDK inhibitors derived from natural (marine, terrestrial, and peptide) sources. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive comprehension of the chemical classifications, origins, target CDKs, associated cancer types, and therapeutic applications.

Source identification and exposure risk management for soil arsenic in urban reclamation areas with high background levels: A case study in a coastal reclamation site from the Pearl River Delta, China

Urbanization involving the excavation and reuse of arsenic-bearing geological materials may pose human health risks. We investigated the distribution and sources of soil arsenic at a coastal reclamation site in the Pearl River Delta, China, and proposed risk management strategies. Analysis of 899 soil samples revealed an average of 58.97 mg/kg arsenic, with a maximum of 1450 mg/kg, mainly in fill material obtained from a local island. Integrative analysis combining reclamation history, regional geology, and bedrock mineralogy conclusively identified hydrothermally altered arsenic-bearing sulfide minerals within extensively fractured bedrock as the primary source of arsenic. Physical weathering and anthropogenic rock blasting produced discrete arsenic-rich particles that were directly transported into soils during land reclamation and accumulated to potential hazardous levels. Oral, dermal, and inhalation pathways were identified as primary exposures for future populations. Integrated engineering and institutional controls, coupled with long-term monitoring, were recommended to mitigate risks. The results highlight the importance of identifying specific geogenic and anthropogenic sources that contribute to heavy metal enrichment of soils in reclaimed areas where native bedrock naturally contains elevated level of metals, supporting evidence-based best practices for risk management and future land use.

Advances in polysaccharides of natural source of anti-diabetes effect and mechanism

PURPOSE

Diabetes is a chronic disease in metabolic disorder, and the pathology is characterized by insulin resistance and insulin secretion disorder in blood. In current, many studies have revealed that polysaccharides extracted from natural sources with significant anti-diabetic effects. Natural polysaccharides can ameliorate diabetes through different action mechanisms. All these polysaccharides are expected to have an important role in the clinic.

METHODS

Existing polysaccharides for the treatment of diabetes are reviewed, and the mechanism of polysaccharides in the treatment of diabetes and its structural characteristics are described in detail.

RESULTS

This article introduced the natural polysaccharide through different mechanisms of action in the treatment of diabetes, including oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammatory response and regulation of intestinal bacteria. Natural polysaccharides can treat of diabetes by regulating signaling pathways is also a research hotspot. In addition, the structural characteristics of polysaccharides were explored. There are some structure-activity relationships between natural polysaccharides and the treatment of diabetes.

Natural waste-derived nano photocatalysts for azo dye degradation

Due to their widespread application in water purification, there is a significant interest in synthesising nanoscale photocatalysts. Nanophotocatalysts are primarily manufactured through chemical methods, which can lead to side effects like pollution, high-energy usage, and even health issues. To address these issues, "green synthesis" was developed, which involves using plant extracts as reductants or capping agents rather than industrial chemical agents. Green fabrication has the benefits of costs less, pollution reduction, environmental protection and human health safety, compared to the traditional methods. This article summarises recent advances in the environmentally friendly synthesis of various nanophotocatalysts employed in the degradation of azo dyes. This study compiles critical findings on natural and artificial methods to achieve the goal. Green synthesis is constrained by the time and place of production and issues with low purity and poor yield, reflecting the complexity of plants' geographical and seasonal distributions and their compositions. However, green photocatalyst synthesis provides additional growth opportunities and potential uses.

Quantifying the contributions of natural and anthropogenic dust sources in Shanxi Province, northern China

Dust storms have direct or indirect impacts on climate change and human health. Identifying and quantifying natural/anthropogenic dust sources can facilitate effective prevention and control of dust events. Based on surface real-time PM10 monitoring data, satellite remote sensing and the HYSPLIT model, this study determined the specific timing, coverage and sources of dust events in Shanxi Province, Northern China. Thus, a composite fingerprinting technique was established to quantify potential dust sources and dust contributions of single dust events. The dust oxidation model was validated, indicating that the composite fingerprinting technique was well suited to the study region. The results show that natural dust sources (67%) contributed more to the study region than anthropogenic dust sources. They were mainly from the northwest and north of the study region. Particularly, the contributions of Taiyuan (TY) and Linfen (LF) accounted for the largest (82%) and smallest (55%) proportions, respectively, both exceeding 50%. Anthropogenic dust sources contributed 33%, mainly from the east and south of the study region. The contribution of anthropogenic dust sources increased in the study region from north to south. In terms of potential dust sources, the Tengger Desert and Badain Jaran Desert (TDBD) contributed the most (26%), followed by the Otindag Sandy Land (OL) (22%). The Taklimakan Desert (TD) contributed the least (2%). The Middle Farmland region of the Hexi Corridor (HMF) in the west (15%) had the largest proportion of anthropogenic dust sources. Differences in the regional contribution of potential dust sources mainly resulted from winter winds, surface drought severity and particle size. At an insignificant distance from the study region, the contribution of potential dust sources was larger in the west than in the east and increased from south to north overall. These methods and findings can contribute to improving the ecological environment in Northern China.

Persea americana extract protects intestinal tissue from Eimeria papillata-induced murine Infection

Coccidiosis is the most prevalent disease-causing widespread economic loss among farm and domestic animals. Currently, several drugs are available for the control of this disease but resistance has been confirmed for all of them. There is an urgent need, therefore, for the identification of new sources as alternative treatments to control coccidiosis. The present work aimed to study the effect of the Persea americana extract (PAE) as an anti-coccidial, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic modulator during murine intestinal Eimeria papillata infection. A total of 25 male mice were divided into five groups, as follows: Group1: Non-infected-non-treated (negative control), Group2: Non-infected-treated group with PAE (500 mg/kg b.w). Group3: Infected-non-treated (positive control), Group4: Infected-treated group with PAE (500 mg/kg b.w.), and Group5: Infected-treated group with Amprolium (120 mg/kg b.w.). Groups (3-5) were orally inoculated with 1 × 103 sporulated E. papillata oocysts. After 60 min of infection, groups (4 and 5) were treated for 5 consecutive days with the recommended doses of PAE and amprolium. The fact that PAE has an anti-coccidial efficacy against intestinal E. papillata infection in mice has been clarified by the reduction of fecal oocyst output on the 5th day post-infection by about 85.41%. Moreover, there is a significant reduction in the size of each parasite stage in the jejunal tissues of the infected-treated group with PAE. PAE counteracted the E. papillata-induced loss of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capacity (TCA). E. papillata infection also induced an increase in the apoptotic cells expressed by caspase-3 which modulated after PAE treatment. Moreover, the mRNA expression of the goblet cell response gene, mucin (MUC2), was upregulated from 0.50 to 1.20-fold after treatment with PAE. Based on our results, PAE is a promising medicinal plant with anti-coccidial, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic activities and could be used as a food additive.

Procyanidin B2: A promising multi-functional food-derived pigment for human diseases

Natural edible pigments play a paramount part in the food industry. Procyanidin B2 (PB2), one of the most representative naturally occurring edible pigments, is usually isolated from the seeds, fruits, and leaves of lots of common plants, such as grapes, Hawthorn, black soybean, as well as blueberry, and functions as a food additive in daily life. Notably, PB2 has numerous bioactivities and possesses the potential to treat/prevent a wide range of human diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, diabetic complications, atherosclerosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and the underlying mechanisms were partially elucidated, including mediating signaling pathways like NF-κB, MAPK, PI3K/Akt, apoptotic axis, and Nrf-2/HO-1. This paper presents a review of the natural sources, bioactivities, and the therapeutic/preventive potential of PB2 and the possible mechanisms, with the aim of promoting the development of PB2 as a functional food and providing references for its clinical application in the treatment of diseases.

Green chemistry production of biopolymeric film-derived biomaterial prepared using natural alginate and vanillin compounds for application as a biocurative

The present work presents the results obtained in the production of vanillin-doped alginate biopolymeric film using green chemistry methodology. Alginate dressings are already a therapeutic reality, but they act only by maintaining the appropriate environment for healing. In order to improve their properties, the incorporation of vanillin was proposed due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. Different biopolymeric films were produced employing the experiment planning through response surface analysis, which allowed determining the best region for a medium value of solubility and high degree of swelling. This region refers to values above 0.07 g of CaCl2 and concentrations above 0.024 g of vanillin, triggering solubility between 25 and 30% and a degree of swelling above 100% and with fixed values of alginate (0.85 g). Such data are related to experiments (A), (B), and (C) listed in Table 1. Regarding the optimization of the process, the normal boundary intersection (NBI) method allowed the analysis of concave regions, predicting the optimal points and generating the Pareto chart with equidistant limits. The antimicrobial test allowed observing the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa microorganisms from the biopolymeric films, as well as a solution of vanillin with calcium chloride and glycerol obtaining a halo of inhibition only in the presence of vanillin, and there was no significant difference between the results obtained in the experiments (A) and (B). The thermal analyses showed that the material has thermal stability in the ideal temperature range (~ 25 °C) for application as a biocurative. We preliminarily concluded that the alginate biopolymeric film doped with vanillin prepared using green chemical methodology presents antimicrobial properties and thermal stability that indicate its potential use as biocurative.

The curious case of polyphenols as green corrosion inhibitors: a review on their extraction, design, and applications

Over the past century, a substantial amount of research focused on developing corrosion inhibitors, with a special focus on green "plant-based" corrosion inhibitors. Among the various types of inhibitors, polyphenols emerged as a promising candidate due to their advantageous characteristics, which include being inexpensive, biodegradable, renewable, and, most importantly, safe for both the environment and humans. Their performance as sustainable corrosion inhibitors have encouraged many electrochemical experiments as well as theoretical, mechanistic, and computational studies, with many papers reporting inhibition efficiencies of over 85%. In this review, the majority of literature contributions on the inhibition of various types of polyphenols, their natural extraction techniques, and their applications as "greener" corrosion inhibitors for metals are thoroughly described and discussed with a focus on their preparation, inhibition mechanism, and performance. Based on the reviewed literature, it can be concluded that polyphenols have a very promising potential to be used as both green and powerful corrosion inhibitors; therefore, further investigations, experimental or computational, are still required to realize higher inhibition efficiencies reaching up to ≈ 100%.

Kaempferol as a therapeutic agent in Alzheimer's disease: Evidence from preclinical studies

BACKGROUND

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia and seriously affects human life and health. Kaempferol (KMP) is a common flavonoid, that is mainly derived from the rhizomes of Kaempferol galanga L. and is widely found in various fruits and vegetables. Previous studies have suggested that KMP has multiple pharmacological activities. However, the anti-AD mechanism of KMP has not been elucidated.

METHODS

This systematic review aims to summarize the existing preclinical experiments on KMP, further confirm the therapeutic effect of KMP in an AD model, and summarize the possible mechanism by which KMP exerts anti-AD effects. Electronic databases, including PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Baidu Academic, and Wanfang, were searched using the keywords of 'Kaempferol,' 'KMP,' 'pharmacology,' and 'Alzheimer's disease'.

RESULTS

We evaluated the reliability of the 12 included studies, and the results showed that the anti-AD mechanism of KMP was reliable and that the prospect of KMP in the treatment of cognitive impairment was promising. We comprehensively assessed the neuroprotective effects of KMP in in vivo and in vitro models of AD. These studies shown that KMP ameliorated AD through several mechanisms, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-acetylcholinesterase effects.

CONCLUSION

KMP may exert anti-AD effects through various mechanisms and is a potential drug with broad prospects for the treatment of AD.

Advances in extraction, purification, structural characteristics and biological activities of hemicelluloses: A review

Hemicelluloses, a major component of plant cell walls, are a non-cellulosic heteropolysaccharide composed of several distinct sugars that is second in abundance to cellulose, which are one of the most abundant and cheapest renewable resources on earth. Hemicelluloses structure is complex and its chemical structure varies greatly among the different plant species. In addition to its wide use in production of feed and other chemical materials, hemicelluloses are known for its remarkable biological activities that remain largely underutilised to date. Therefore, comprehensive investigations of hemicelluloses structural and biological properties would be helpful for achieving rational utilisation and high-value conversion of this underutilised substance into agents with enhanced health benefits for incorporation in drugs and health foods. In this review, details of diverse research initiatives that have enhanced our understanding of hemicelluloses properties are summarised, including hemicelluloses sources, extraction and purification methods, structural characteristics and biological activities. Furthermore, hemicelluloses structure-activity relationships and new directions for future hemicelluloses research studies are discussed.

Anthocyanin as a therapeutic in Alzheimer's disease: A systematic review of preclinical evidences

BACKGROUND

The aim of this systematic review is to ponder the possible mechanism of action of anthocyanin in Alzheimer's disease (AD), to prompt the development of anthocyanin-based dietary supplementation or therapeutic intervention for AD and to explore the natural sources of anthocyanins.

METHODS

Electronic bibliographic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Proquest, DOAJ, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for preclinical studies probing the efficacy of anthocyanin on AD. The search strategy included no time limit, but was restricted to English. The review protocol is registered on PROSPERO, registration no. CRD42021272972. The systematic review followed the PICO approach for inclusion of reports. All the reports were appraised for risk of bias using the SYRCLE's RoB tool.

RESULTS

Bibliographic details of the article, animal strain/weight/age, induction model, anthocyanin source, type of anthocyanin, dose, route of administration, duration, and the outcome measures were extracted from 12 retrieved reports explicitly. The implication of food-based anthocyanin in acute and long-term cognition and Aβ mediated neurodegeneration appears alluring. Majority of the studies comprehended in this review had moderate methodological quality.

DISCUSSION

Efficacy of anthocyanin in alleviating oxidative stress, reactive astrogliosis, cholinergic dysfunction, apoptosis, synaptotoxicity, neuroinflammation, tau hyperphosphorylation, dysregulated membrane potential, neuronal extracellular calcium, dysfunctional amyloidogenic pathway, and cognitive deficits in various rodent models of AD is manifested compositely in 12 studies.

Sources and fate of excessive ammonium in the Quaternary sediments on the Dongting Plain, China

Excessive ammonia-nitrogen (N) in aquifers has caused groundwater pollution on the Dongting Plain (DTP), which seriously threatens the safety of drinking water. It is urgent and necessary to determine the sources and enrichment mechanisms of ammonia-N in groundwater. Carrying out water and soil collaborative research on a three-dimensional scale can more comprehensively analyze the sources of N, including natural and anthropogenic sources. In this study, surface and groundwater quality characteristics were examined from a total of 77 sites on the DTP. Two subsequent boreholes were drilled in the high ammonia concentration area and normal groundwater area, respectively, to compare the effects of anthropogenic activities. Indicators from hydrogeochemical and pedogeochemical analyses, as well as various isotopes, including δ¹⁵N-NH₄⁺, δ¹⁵N-TON, δ¹⁵N-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-H₂O, δD-H₂O, and δ¹³C-TOC were used to identify ammonium sources and transformation mechanisms in the strata. We found that the sediments were contaminated by manure and sewage in the aquifers, and part of the shallow groundwater was additionally contaminated by nitrogen fertilizers. Excessive ammonium-N was also detected in the deep aquitards and sediments, which were mainly dominated by mineralization. Ammonia oxidation (with weak hydroxylamine oxidation) is an important biogeochemical process in which ammonia and nitrate do not accumulate in oxidizing groundwater environments. However, heterotrophic nitrification (HN) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) are the release mechanisms for excessive ammonium-N under reducing conditions. In addition, organic matter (OM) on the DTP had a wide range of biogeochemical proxies generated by phytoplankton within a lake, and the comparatively resilient terrestrial organic residues washed in from the surrounding terrestrial area. This study breaks through the conventional mechanisms for the release of excessive ammonium from sediments to aquifers, which provides new ideas for research on ammonium in sediments and ammonia in groundwater.

Therapeutic potential of nitric oxide synthase inhibitor from natural sources for the treatment of ischemic stroke

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the major signalling molecules in the mammalian body playing critical role in regulation of blood pressure, cardiovascular disease including stroke, immune activation, neuronal and cell communication. Moreover, hyper production of NO by the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) involved in neuropathic pain, neurodegenerative disorders and stroke. Hence, the search on small molecules from the natural sources for the inhibition of NOS is desirable in therapeutic point of view. The elevated level of NO caused by NOS enzyme become a novel target in finding new inhibitors from natural sources as antistroke agents. The present study focuses on the molecular docking of quercetin and its analogues against NOS. The active site of the enzyme was docked with the ligand and pharmacological properties were analysed. From this result, we suggest the therapeutic property of quercetin and its analogues against NOS.

Antimicrobial resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus and its in-vitro potential inhibition efficiency

BACKGROUND

Staphylococcus aureus infection is associated with hospitals and caused mortality in hospitalized patients. These biofilm-forming bacteria are associated with chronic infections in patients.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the biofilm forming ability of multidrug resistant bacteria associated with hospital environment and analyze anti-biofilm compounds from the natural sources.

METHODS

The hospital wastewater sample was used for the isolation of drug resistant S. aureus strains. The biofilm producing ability was analyzed and the isolated S. aureus strains were tested for antibiotic susceptibility patterns against various antibiotics. To screen suitable antibacterial agent, essential oil was extracted from Teucrium polium by hydrodistillation method and the compounds were determined by GC-MS analysis. The antimicrobial potential of essential oil was studied against S. aureus strains by disc diffusion method and biofilm inhibition property of essential oil was analyzed. The synergistic activity of essential oil was also analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 13 S. aureus strains were isolated and almost all bacterial strains showed biofilm forming ability. Most of the isolated S. aureus strains showed resistance to ampicillin, cefoxitin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, chloramphenicol and vancomycin. The extracted essential oil showed pale yellow in colour with pleasant odour and the yield was about 0.9%. Twenty-two compounds were detected in GC-MS analysis which shared about 96% of the total determined chemical composition. The major compounds determined were α-pinene (5.3%), linalool (16.2%), caryophyllene (10.04%), germacrene D (37.2%), and β-eudesmol (6.1%). The extracted essential oil showed antibacterial activity and the zone of inhibition varied from 15 ± 1 to 21 ± 2 mm against S. aureus strains. The essential oil showed antibiofilm activity and synergistic activity against S. aureus strains.

CONCLUSIONS

This study analyzed biofilm forming ability of drug resistant S. aureus strains isolated from the hospital wastewater. The isolated bacterial strains showed resistance against various tested antibiotics. The essential oil extracted from T. polium showed antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity.

Honokiol: A naturally occurring lignan with pleiotropic bioactivities

Honokiol is the dominant biphenolic compound isolated from the Magnolia tree, and has long been considered as the active constituent of the traditional Chinese herb, 'Houpo', which is widely used to treat symptoms due to 'stagnation of qi'. Pharmacological studies have shown that honokiol possesses a wide range of bioactivities without obvious toxicity. Honokiol protects the liver, kidneys, nervous system, and cardiovascular system through reducing oxidative stress and relieving inflammation. Moreover, honokiol shows anti-diabetic property through enhancing insulin sensitivity, and anti-obese property through promoting browning of adipocytes. In vivo and in vitro studies indicated that honokiol functions as an anti-cancer agent through multiple mechanisms: inhibiting angiogenesis, promoting cell apoptosis, and regulating cell cycle. A variety of therapeutic effects of honokiol may be associated with its physiochemical properties, which make honokiol readily cross the blood brain barrier and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, with high bioavailability. In the future, more clinical researches on honokiol are needed to fully authenticate its therapeutic values.

Ammonium and nitrate sources and transformation mechanism in the Quaternary sediments of Jianghan Plain, China

Excessive inorganic nitrogen (IN) compound content in groundwater is generally attributed to anthropogenic activities. Here, natural nitrogen sources in Quaternary sediments from aquifers and aquitards of Jianghan Plain (JHP), China were identified. Ammonium and nitrate content in groundwater samples collected from 129 well sites were determined through chemical analysis. Subsequent 4 boreholes were drilled at areas with high nitrogen concentration in the Quaternary aquifer. Indicators from hydrochemistry and soil geochemistry analysis, as well as optically stimulated luminescence dating and various of radioactive isotope δ¹⁴C-CO₂ and stable isotopes including δ¹⁵N-NH₄⁺, δ¹⁵N-total organic nitrogen (TON), δ¹⁵N-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-H₂O, δD-H₂O, and δ¹³C-total organic carbon (TOC) were used to identify high-concentration N compound sources and transformation mechanisms (NO₃^-: 0.02-770 mg L^-1; NH₄-N: 0-30.5 mg L^-1) in the porous media. The thick clay layer protected the underlying media. Paleo-precipitation characteristics were preserved in the porewater; that is, it had not been affected by anthropogenic activities. The high nitrate concentration in the shallow oxidized aquifer was mostly attributed to manure and sewage (δ¹⁵N-NO₃^- was 14‰). The ammonium-N in the deep strata and part of ammonium-N in the shallow strata (aquifers and aquitards) were from natural sources, mainly from natural TON mineralization. Adsorption was an auxiliary factor for ammonium enrichment in the shallow strata, as were dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and low ammonia volatilization. Organic matter (OM) involved in mineralization was a mixture of lacustrine algae and terrigenous clastic sediments (from river upstream). The algae were traced to lake formation and frequent evolutionary changes in river environments, as indicated by alterations in sedimentary facies. The present findings may encourage researchers to consider natural IN sources' contribution to N contamination using quantitative models. They also serve as a valuable reference for understanding other pollutants' transformation mechanism in similar environments and provide research ideas for similar areas.

Long-term water quality conditions and trends in 12 tropical coastal rivers in Northeast Brazil

The water quality and trends in 12 tropical rivers in northeastern Brazil over a 27-year period (1990-2016; N = 39,008 samples) were evaluated. The analyzed parameters included temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrogen (NH₄⁺), total phosphorus (P), and fecal coliforms. Densely populated basins (> 1000 inhab km^-2) presented lower DO values (average 3.4 mg l^-1; 43% DO saturation), while those with low demographic density (< 100 inhab km^-2) presented values that aligned well with the recommendations of environmental legislation (average 5.8 mg l^-1; 75% DO saturation). The NH₄⁺ and P compound concentrations were typical of water bodies affected by urban inputs. The average p values were above the allowable limit (< 0.1 mg l^-1) at all stations. The NH₄⁺ values were high at the stations showing low DO concentrations, which suggested that due to reducing conditions after NH₄⁺ accumulation was favored in those aquatic systems. In densely populated basins, the average fecal coliform concentrations were > 40,000 MPN 100 ml^-1, indicating the input of improperly treated domestic/industrial liquid wastes. For the period from 1990 to 2016, 45% of the stations (N = 19) showed a rate of DO reduction that ranged from 0.01 to 0.17 mg l^-1.O₂ year^-1. An increase in NH₄⁺ concentrations was observed in 33% of the stations (N = 14), with an estimated average increase rate from 0.013 to 1.8 mg l^-1 NH₄⁺ year^-1. These results demonstrated that the rates of increase in anthropogenic factors were significant (p < 0.05), while the natural factors remained constant.

Planular-vertical distribution and pollution characteristics of cropland soil Hg and the estimated soil-air exchange fluxes of gaseous Hg over croplands in northern China

As an important reservoir of mercury (Hg), cropland play an important role in the Hg cycle, but it was poorly understood in northern China. The major objectives of this study are to ascertain the distribution characteristics of soil Hg and then assess its pollution level and potential risk, and further evaluate the role of cropland in northern China in the global soil-air exchange of Hg based on the simulation experiments and regional survey. The average Hg concentration in surface soils of the 30 sites in northern China was 116.1 ± 135.8 ng g^-1, which was significantly higher than background values. The surface soils show a significant spatial heterogeneity in Hg concentration, and the Hg levels near provincial capitals were higher than those at corresponding prefecture-level cities, revealing that the soil Hg levels were closely associated with the local industrial and economic development. Profile data shows that topsoil Hg concentration was significantly higher than those in deeper layers at most of sites, indicating the more serious pollution situation in recent years. Generally, the higher the surface soil Hg concentration, the more obvious this top-bottom decreasing trend. The planular-vertical distribution patterns of TOM share similar trends as those of soil Hg concentration, indicating Hg concentration was closely associated with TOM content. Statistical results show that the mean CF, E_rⁱ, and I_geo values were 4.0 ± 5.0, 161 ± 198, 0.76 ± 1.34, respectively, and more than two thirds of sampling sites were moderately and considerably polluted. The mean annual accumulative flux of Hg in the northern China was 20.9 ± 43.8 μg m^-2 yr^-1, and the total net emission fluxes of Hg from the croplands in six provinces were 8.37 ton yr^-1. This indicates that although the cropland occasionally acts as a sink, it represents an important natural source of atmospheric Hg as a whole.

Emerging paradigms of viral diseases and paramount role of natural resources as antiviral agents

In the current scenario, the increasing prevalence of diverse microbial infections as well as emergence and re-emergence of viral epidemics with high morbidity and mortality rates are major public health threat. Despite the persistent production of antiviral drugs and vaccines in the global market, viruses still remain as one of the leading causes of deadly human diseases. Effective control of viral diseases, particularly Zika virus disease, Nipah virus disease, Severe acute respiratory syndrome, Coronavirus disease, Herpes simplex virus infection, Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and Ebola virus disease remain promising goal amidst the mutating viral strains. Current trends in the development of antiviral drugs focus solely on testing novel drugs or repurposing drugs against potential targets of the viruses. Compared to synthetic drugs, medicines from natural resources offer less side-effect to humans and are often cost-effective in the productivity approaches. This review intends not only to emphasize on the major viral disease outbreaks in the past few decades and but also explores the potentialities of natural substances as antiviral traits to combat viral pathogens. Here, we spotlighted a comprehensive overview of antiviral components present in varied natural sources, including plants, fungi, and microorganisms in order to identify potent antiviral agents for developing alternative therapy in future.

A comprehensive review on the biological interest of quinoline and its derivatives

Amongst heterocyclic compounds, quinoline is an advantaged scaffold that appears as a significant assembly motif for the development of new drug entities. Quinoline and its derivatives tested with diverse biological activity constitute an important class of compounds for new drug development. Therefore, many scientific communities have developed these compounds as intent structure and evaluated their biological activities. The present, review provides brief natural sources of quinoline and including a new extent of quinoline-based marketed drugs. This review also confers information about the biological activities of quinoline derivatives such as antibacterial, antifungal, antimycobacterial, antiviral, anti-protozoal, antimalarial, anticancer, cardiovascular, CNS effects, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic and miscellaneous activities.

Cellulose from sources to nanocellulose and an overview of synthesis and properties of nanocellulose/zinc oxide nanocomposite materials

Recently, environmental and ecological concerns are increasing due to the usage of petroleum-based products so the synthesis of ultra-fine chemicals and functional materials from natural resources is drawing a tremendous level of attention. Nanocellulose, a unique and promising natural material extracted from native cellulose, may prove to be most ecofriendly materials that are technically and economically feasible in modern times, minimizing the pollution generation. Nanocellulose has gained tremendous attention for its use in various applications, due to its excellent special surface chemistry, physical properties, and remarkable biological properties (biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity). Various types of nanocellulose, viz. cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), are deeply introduced and compared in this work in terms of sources, production, structures and properties. The metal and metal oxides especially zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are broadly used in various fields due to the diversity of functional properties such as antimicrobial and ultraviolet (UV) properties. Thus, the advancement of nanocellulose and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs)-based composites materials are summarized in this article in terms of the preparation methods and remarkable properties with the help of recent knowledge and significant findings (especially from the past six years reports). The nanocellulose materials complement zinc oxide nanoparticles, where they impart their functional properties to the nanoparticle composites. As a result hybrid nanocomposite containing nanocellulose/zinc oxide composite has shown excellent mechanical, UV barrier, and antibacterial properties. The nanocellulose based hybrid nanomaterials have huge potential applications in the area of food packaging, biopharmaceuticals, biomedical, and cosmetics. Thus the functional composite materials containing nanocellulose and zinc oxide will determine the potential biomedical application for nanocellulose.

Development, influencing parameters and interactions of bioplasticizers: An environmentally friendlier alternative to petro industry-based sources

The current industrial revolution emphasized the necessity to use environmentally friendlier sources and strategies to meet the bio-based economy challenges of the modern world. Owing to the finiteness, human health and environmental impacts of fossil resources, current research efforts are switched to search and develop renewable, sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives of commercial plasticizers to meet the green agenda to establish a green society. The substitution of petroleum-based plasticizers with bioplasticizers offers noteworthy advantages, such as recyclability, biodegradability, high lubricant power, low diffusion coefficients in the polymeric matrix and very low volatility. Moreover, bioplasticizers provide the most suitable platform due to their global availability and industrially-relevant applications. Numerous parameters such as solubility, polarity, and structural compatibility are considered important and can influence the designing of efficient plasticizers. In this context, a plethora of research has given their structural attributes along with their compatibility with different elastomers and plastics. Herein, the valorization of bioplasticizers in several industrial and biotechnological processes is presented with suitable examples. Additionally, it highlights the insight of selection criteria and generalities concerning plasticization theories. A brief discussion is also given on the mechanism of plasticization and modifications, which are being made in the current industrial practices. The description extends towards the design of effective plasticizers with their dependence on structure and how we can improve their performance to the polymer industry.

Recent developments on the extraction and application of ursolic acid. A review

Ursolic acid (UA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid widely found in herbs, leaves, flowers and fruits; update information on the major natural sources or agro-industrial wastes is presented. Traditional (maceration, Soxhlet and heat reflux) and modern (microwave-, ultrasound-, accelerated solvent- and supercritical fluid) extraction and purification technologies of UA, as well as some patented process, are summarized. The great interest in this bioactive compound is related to the beneficial effects in human health due to antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, chemopreventive, cardioprotective, antihyperlipidemic and hypoglycemic activities, and others. UA may augment the resistance of the skin barrier to irritants, prevent dry skin and could be suitable to develop antiaging products. The development of nanocrystals and nanoparticle-based drugs could reduce the side effects of high doses of UA in organisms, and increase its limited solubility and poor bioavailability of UA which limit the potential of this bioactive and the further applications. Commercial patented applications in relation to cosmetical and pharmaceutical uses of UA and its derivatives are surveyed.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B inhibitors from natural sources

Since PTP1B enzyme was discovered in 1988, it has captured the research community's attention. This landmark discovery has stimulated numerous research studies on a variety of human diseases, including cancer, inflammation, and diabetes. Tremendous progress has been made in finding PTP1B inhibitors and exploring PTP1B regulatory mechanisms. This review investigates for the natural PTP1B inhibitors, and focuses on the common characteristics of the discovered structures and structure-activity relationships. To facilitate understanding, all the natural compounds are here divided into five different classes (fatty acids, phenolics, terpenoids, steroids, and alkaloids), according to their skeletons. These PTP1B inhibitors of scaffold structures could serve as a theoretical basis for new concept drug discovery and design.

A critical review of methods for characterisation of polyphenolic compounds in fruits and vegetables

Phenolic compounds, ubiquitous in plants, are of considerable interest and have received more and more attention in recent years due to their bioactive functions. Polyphenols are amongst the most desirable phytochemicals due to their antioxidant activity. These components are known as secondary plant metabolites and possess also antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties along with their high antioxidant capacity. Many efforts have been made to provide a highly sensitive and selective analytical method for the determination and characterisation of polyphenols. The aim of this paper is to provide information on the most recent developments in the chemical investigation of polyphenols emphasising the extraction, separation and analysis of these compounds by chromatographic and spectral techniques.
