Ultrafine nickel-rhodium nanoparticles anchored on two-dimensional vanadium carbide for high performance hydrous hydrazine decomposition at mild conditions

The development of heterogeneous supported nanocatalysts with a high kinetics combined with low cost is off importance but remains still challenged for hydrazine hydrate served as a promising hydrogen storage material. Herein, by virtue of surficial functional groups, ultrafine NiRh NPs were monodispersed on the two-dimensional V2C surface via a conventional wet chemical co-reduction. The optimized NiRh/V2C system demonstrates an excellent catalytic performance toward selectively catalyzing dehydrogenation of hydrazine hydrate, affording 100% H2 selectivity with the turnover frequency (TOF) value of 987.5 h-1 at 323 K. Such an enhancement is mainly attributed to synergistic effect of nanosystem, which will optimize local surface energy and promote electron transfer in NiRh/V2C system, thereby improving the kinetic selectivity of catalytic hydrazine hydrate decomposition. This work has provided a facile strategy for developing nanocatalysts with high kinetics that could enable huge industrial applications in the future.

Platinum single atom on CsPbBr3 nanocrystals as electrocatalyst boosts electrochemical sensing of ascorbic acid

Monitoring ascorbic acid (AA) levels in human body can provide valuable clues for disease diagnosis. Anchoring noble metal single atoms on perovskite substrate is a promising strategy to design electrocatalysts with outstanding electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we design an electrochemical method for detecting AA by utilizing Pt single atoms-doped CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (Pt SA/CsPbBr3 NCs) fixed on a glassy carbon electrode as an electrochemical catalyst. The uncharged 3,5,3',5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) undergoes oxidation to form the positively charged oxidized TMB (oxTMB) owing to the exceptional electrochemical catalytic performance of Pt SA/CsPbBr3 NCs. Subsequently, the target AA reduces oxTMB to TMB, which is then electrocatalytically oxidized to oxTMB, producing significant oxidation current. In this way, such characteristic provides a sensitive electrochemical strategy for AA detection, achieving a concentration range of 50-fold with the detection limit of 0.0369 μM. The developed electrochemical method also successfully generates accurate detection response of AA in complex sample media (urine). Overall, this approach is expected to offer a novel way for early disease diagnosis.

Grubbs-Hoveyda catalysts conjugated to a β-barrel protein: Effect of halide substitution on aqueous olefin metathesis activity

The effect of halide substitution in Grubbs-Hoveyda II catalysts (GHII catalysts) embedded in the engineered β-barrel protein nitrobindin (NB4exp) on metathesis activity in aqueous media was studied. Maleimide tagged dibromido and diiodido derivates of the GHII catalyst were synthesized and covalently conjugated to NB4exp. The biohybrid catalysts were characterized spectroscopically confirming the structural integrity. When the two chloride substituents at ruthenium center were exchanged against bromide and iodide, the diiodo derivative was found to show significantly higher catalytic activity in ring-closing metathesis of α,ω-diolefins, whereas the dibromido derivative was less efficient when compared with the parent dichlorido catalyst. Using the diiodido catalyst, high turnover numbers of up to 75 were observed for ring-closing metathesis (RCM) yielding unsaturated six- and seven-membered N-heterocycles.

Enhancing the activity and succinyl-CoA specificity of 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase Tfu_0875 through rational binding pocket engineering

The 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase is the rate-limiting enzyme for linear dicarboxylic acids production. However, the promiscuous substrate specificity and suboptimal catalytic performance have restricted its application. Here we present both biochemical and structural analyses of a high-efficiency 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase Tfu_0875. Notably, Tfu_0875 displayed heightened activity and substrate specificity for succinyl-CoA, a key precursor in adipic acid production. To enhance its performance, a deep learning approach (DLKcat) was employed to identify effective mutants, and a computational strategy, known as the greedy accumulated strategy for protein engineering (GRAPE), was used to accumulate these effective mutants. Among the mutants, Tfu_0875N249W/L163H/E217L exhibited the highest specific activity (320% of wild-type Tfu_0875), the greatest catalytic efficiency (kcat/KM = 1.00 min-1mM-1), the highest succinyl-CoA specificity (KM = 0.59 mM, 28.1% of Tfu_0875) and dramatically reduced substrate binding energy (-30.25 kcal mol-1v.s. -15.94 kcal mol-1). A structural comparison between Tfu_0875N249W/L163H/E217L and the wild type Tfu_0875 revealed that the increased interaction between the enzyme and succinyl-CoA was the primary reason for the enhanced enzyme activity. This interaction facilitated rapid substrate anchoring and stabilization. Furthermore, a reduced binding pocket volume improved substrate specificity by enhancing the complementarity between the binding pocket and the substrate in stereo conformation. Finally, our rationally designed mutant, Tfu_0875N249W/L163H/E217L, increased the adipic acid titer by 1.35-fold compared to the wild type Tfu_0875 in shake flask. The demonstrated enzymatic methods provide a promising enzyme variant for the adipic acid production. The above effective substrate binding pocket engineering strategy can be beneficial for the production of other industrially competitive biobased chemicals when be applied to other thiolases.

A facile and on-site sensing strategy for phenolic compounds based on a novel nanozyme with high polyphenol oxidase-like activity

Phenolic compounds (PCs) are diverse in nature and undergo complex migration and transformations in the environment, making it challenging to use techniques such as chromatography and other traditional methods to determine the concentration of PCs by separation, individual monitoring and subsequent addition. To address this issue, a facile and on-site strategy was developed to measure the concentration of PCs using a novel nanozyme with polyphenol oxidase-like activity. First, the nanozyme was designed by coordinating the asymmetric ligand nicotinic acid with copper to mimic the structure of mononuclear and trinuclear copper clusters of natural laccases. Subsequently, by introducing 2-mercaptonicotinic acid to regulate the valence state of copper, the composite nanozyme CuNA10S was obtained with significantly enhanced activity. Interestingly, CuNA10S was shown to have a broad substrate spectrum capable of catalyzing common PCs. Building upon the superior performance of this nanozyme, a method was developed to determine the concentration of PCs. To enable rapid on-site sensing, we designed and prepared CuNA10S-based test strips and developed a tailored smartphone sensing platform. Using paper strip sensors combined with a smartphone sensing platform with RGB streamlined the sensing process, facilitating rapid on-site analysis of PCs within a range of 0-100 μM. Our method offers a solution for the quick screening of phenolic wastewater at contaminated sites, allowing sensitive and quick monitoring of PCs without the need for standard samples. This significantly simplifies the monitoring procedure compared to more cumbersome large-scale instrumental methods.

Cobalt single-atom catalyst tailored ceramic membrane for selective removal of emerging organic contaminants

Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic membrane (Co1-NCNT-CM) in conjunction with an activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, achieving excellent EOCs degradation and anti-fouling performance. An interfacial reaction mechanism effectively mitigates membrane fouling through a repulsive interaction with natural organic matter. The generation of singlet oxygen at the Co-N3-C active sites through a catalytic pathway (PMS→PMS∗→OH∗→O∗→OO∗→1O2) exhibits selective oxidation of phenols and sulfonamides, achieving >90% removal rates. Our findings elucidate a multi-layered functional architecture within the Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS system, responsible for its superior performance in organic decontamination and membrane maintenance during secondary effluent treatment. It highlights the power of integrating Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS systems in advanced wastewater treatment frameworks, specifically for targeted EOCs removal, heralding a new direction for sustainable water management.

Electron and surface engineering of Ni2P/MnP4 heterojunction as high performance bifunctional electrocatalyst for amperage-level overall water splitting

Producing hydrogen through electrocatalytic overall water splitting with ampere-level current density is still limited by the high cost and poor stability of electrocatalysts. In this work, a new type Ni2P/MnP4 heterojunction composite material was designed and prepared as bifunctional electrocatalyst. Based on XPS spectra and theoretical calculation, the formation of Ni2P/MnP4 heterojunction successfully modulates the local electronic structure of Ni2P and enhances the ionization of H and Ni by increasing the electron transfer rate. Moreover, the special nanovilli structure and superhydropholic/superaerophobic surface of Ni2P/MnP4 heterojunction accelerates the transfer of electrolyte and gaseous products. Benefiting from these advantages, the as-prepared Ni2P/MnP4/CF not only exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance, which can release 10 mA/cm2 current density with a low overpotential of 69 mV and 247 mV for HER and OER respectively, but also shows admirable stability of continuous overall water splitting to drive 1000 mA/cm2 for 180 h without notable activity degradation. We believe this material possesses outstanding potential for industrial applications, and our strategy may provide a new pathway to design relative materials.

AIE fluorescent nanozyme-based dual-mode biosensor for analysis of the bioactive component hypoxanthine in meat products

The development of facile, low-cost reliable, and precise onsite assays for the bioactive component hypoxanthine (Hx) in meat products is significant for safeguarding food safety and public health. Herein, we proposed a smartphone-assissted aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogen tetraphenylethene (TPE)-incorporated amorphous Fe-doped phosphotungstates (Fe-Phos@TPE) nanozyme-based ratiometric fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode biosensor for achieving the onsite visual detection of Hx. When the Hx existed, xanthine oxidase (XOD) catalyzed Hx into H2O2 to be further catalyzed into •OH by the prominent peroxidase activity of Fe-Phos@TPE at pH = 6.5, resulting in the oxidization of nonfluorescent o-phenylenediamine (OPD, naked-eye colorless) to be yellow fluorescent emissive 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP, naked-eye dark yellow) at 550 nm as well as the intrinsic blue fluorescence of Fe-Phos@TPE at 440 nm to be decreased via inner-filter effect (IFE) action, thereby realizing a multi-enzyme cascade catalytic reaction at near-neutral pH to overcome the traditional acidity dependence-induced time-consuming and low sensitivity troublesome.

Computational design of myoglobin-based carbene transferases for monoterpene derivatization

Carbene transfer reactions have emerged as pivotal methodologies for the synthesis of complex molecular architectures. Heme protein-catalyzed carbene transfer reactions have shown promising results on model compounds. However, their limited substrate scope has hindered their application in natural product functionalization. Building upon the foundation of previously published work on a carbene transferase-myoglobin variant, this study employs computer-aided protein engineering to design myoglobin variants, using either docking or the deep learning-based LigandMPNN method. These variants were utilized as catalysts in carbene transfer reactions with a selection of monoterpene substrates featuring C-C double bonds, leading to seven target products. This cost-effective methodology broadens the substrate scope for heme protein-catalyzed reactions, thereby opening novel pathways for research in heme protein functionalities and offering fresh perspectives in the synthesis of bioactive molecules.

Pore walls as high-way for efficient bulk charge transfer in porous SrTiO3 single crystals boosting photocatalytic overall water splitting

Suppressing carrier recombination in bulk and facilitating carrier transfer to surface via rational structure design is of great significance to improve solar-to-H2 conversion efficiency. We demonstrate a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize porous SrTiO3 single crystals (SrTiO3-P) with exposed (001) facets by introducing carbon spheres as templates. The obviously increased surface photovoltage and photocurrent response indicate that the interconnected pore walls act as enormous charge transfer "highways", accelerating carrier transport from bulk to surface. Furthermore, the absence of grain boundaries and high crystallinity could also lower the carrier recombination rate. Thus, the SrTiO3-P photocatalyst loaded with Rh/Cr2O3 as cocatalyst exhibits 1.5 times higher overall water splitting activity than that of solid SrTiO3, with gas evolution rate of 19.99 μmol h-1 50 mg-1 for H2 and 11.37 μmol h-1 50 mg-1 for O2. Additionally, SrTiO3-P also shows superior stability without any decay during cycling testing. This work provides a new insight into designing efficient multicomponent photocatalysts with a single-crystal porous structure.

Roles of different Ni-Si interactions in methane combustion under oscillating temperature conditions

The silicon- modified nickel oxide catalysts with the same compositions but distinct Ni-Si interactions were obtained via different synthesis routes and utilized for methane combustion under conditions of oscillating temperatures. For catalysts prepared by co-grinding, amorphous SiO2 was dispersed on the surface of large NiO crystallites. During high-temperature calcination or reactions, the crystallization of SiO2, coupled with the sintering or decomposition of NiO crystallites, led to the inferior catalytic activity and stability. Interactions between Ni and Si species were enhanced in catalysts synthesized by precipitation. The Si species was incorporated into the NiO lattice to inhibit the growth of NiO crystallites and to generate nickel silicate species under thermal treatments. The small NiO crystallites provided more Ni3+ and active oxygen species for methane activation and oxidation, while the bulk nickel silicate species played a pivotal role in improving thermal stability, conjointly provoking excellent catalytic performance in cyclic heating-cooling tests between 180 and 800 °C. This study offers new insights into the design of metal oxide composites for catalytic applications.

Boron modification promoting electrochemical surface reconstruction of NiFe-LDH for efficient and stable freshwater/seawater oxidation catalysis

Transition metal-based electrocatalysts generally take place surface reconstruction in alkaline conditions, but little is known about how to improve the reconstruction to a highly active oxyhydroxide surface for an efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we develop a strategy to accelerate surface reconstruction by combining boron modification and cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation. Density functional theory calculations and in-situ/ex-situ characterizations indicate that both B-doping and electrochemical activation can reduce the energy barrier and contribute to the surface evolution into highly active oxyhydroxides. The formed oxyhydroxide active phase can tune the electronic configuration and boost the OER process. The reconstructed catalyst of CV-B-NiFe-LDH displays excellent alkaline OER performance in freshwater, simulated seawater, and natural seawater with low overpotentials at 100 mA cm-2 (η100: 219, 236, and 255 mV, respectively) and good durability. This catalyst also presents outstanding Cl- corrosion resistance in alkalized seawater electrolytes. The CV-B-NiFe-LDH||Pt/C electrolyzer reveals prominent performance for alkalized freshwater/seawater splitting. This study provides a guideline for developing advanced OER electrocatalysts by promoting surface reconstruction.

Structurally disordered MoSe2 with rich 1T phase as a universal platform for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

The improvement of surface reactivity in noble-metal-free cocatalysts is crucial for the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalytic systems. However, the influence of crystallinity on catalytic efficacy has received limited attention. Herein, we report the utilization of structurally disordered MoSe2 with abundant 1T phase as a versatile cocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Using MoSe2/carbon nitride (CN) hybrids as a case study, it is demonstrated that amorphous MoSe2 significantly enhances the hydrogen evolution rate of CN, achieving up to 11.37 μmol h-1, surpassing both low crystallinity (8.24 μmol h-1) and high crystallinity MoSe2 (3.86 μmol h-1). Experimental analysis indicates that the disordered structure of amorphous MoSe2, characterized by coordination-unsaturated surface sites and a rich 1T phase with abundant active sites at the basal plane, predominantly facilitates the conversion of surface-bound protons to hydrogen. Conversely, the heightened charge transfer capacity of the highly crystalline counterpart plays a minor role in enhancing practical catalytic performance. This approach is applicable for enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of various semiconducting photocatalysts, including CdS, TiO2, and ZnIn2S4, thereby offering novel insights into the advancement of high-performance non-precious catalysts through phase engineering.

Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate nanosheets with edge effect constructed from spent lithium-ion battery ternary cathodes for oxygen evolution reaction

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has received increasing attention for environment and resource reclamation. Converting LIBs wastes into high-efficiency catalysts is a win-win strategy for realizing resource reclamation and addressing sustainable energy challenges. Herein, we developed a simple method to upcycle spent-LIBs cathode powder into Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co/NFCH-FF) as a low-cost and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The optimized Co/NFCH-FF electrode appears very competitive OER performances with low overpotentials of 201 and 249 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.4 mV dec-1, and a high long-term stability. Moreover, we reveal that the existence of Co atoms leads to the formation of a crystalline/amorphous (c/a) interface at the Co/NFCH nanosheet edge, inducing the nanosheets possess a unique edge effect to enhance electric fields and accumulate hydroxide ions (OH-) at the edge during the OER process. Benefiting from edge effect, Co/NFCH-FF shows outstanding intrinsic activity. Furthermore, Co atoms as dopants stabilize the electronic structure of Co/NFCH-FF, enabling Co/NFCH-FF to exhibit excellent catalytic stability. This work provides an effective strategy for converting the end-life LIBs to high-performance multicomponent OER electrocatalysts and proposes new insights into the mechanism of enhanced catalytic activity of Co/NFCH.

Rapid construction of nickel phyllosilicate with ultrathin layers and high performance for CO2 methanation

The traditional techniques for the synthesis of nickel phyllosilicates usually time-consuming and energy-intensive, which often lead to the formation of layers with excessive thickness due to uncontrolled crystal growth. In order to overcome these challenges, this work introduces a microwave-assisted synthesis strategy to facilitate the synthesis of Ni-phyllosilicate-based catalysts within an exceptionally short duration of only five minutes, attaining a peak temperature of merely 102 °C. To enhance the specific surface area and to increase the exposure of active sites, an investigation was conducted involving three surfactants. The employment of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) has yielded remarkable results, with an ultrahigh specific surface area reaching 535 m2 g-1 and an ultrathin lamellar thickness of 1.43 nm. The catalyst exhibited an impressive CO2 conversion of 81.7 % at 400 °C, 60 L g-1 h-1, 0.1 MPa. It also demonstrated a substantial turnover frequency for CO2 (TOFCO2) of 5.4 ± 0.1 × 10-2 s-1, alongside a relatively low activation energy (Ea) of 80.74 kJ·mol-1. Moreover, the catalyst maintained its high stability over a period of 100 h and displayed high resistance to sintering. To further elucidate growth temperature gradient of the catalyst and concentration gradient of the materials involved, COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL) simulations were effectively utilized. In conclusion, this work breaks the limitation associated with traditional, laborious synthesis methods for Ni-phyllosilicates, which can produce materials with high surface area and thin-layer characteristics.

Highly efficient selective hydrogenation of adiponitrile to hexamethylene diamine over barium and melamine formaldehyde resin-modified nickel-cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived catalyst

In the present study, the catalyst modified with alkaline oxide can enhance the selectivity to primary amines. However, the addition of alkaline oxide inevitably reduces catalytic activity. In this study, NiCo-NC@BaO-MFC catalyst derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-67, Ba(CH3COO)2, and melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin was prepared and used for the hydrogenation of adiponitrile (ADN) to hexamethylene diamine (HDMA). The carbon layer obtained from the MF resin effectively prevents the interaction between barium (Ba) and the active center, thus improving target product selectivity without decreasing catalytic activity. The results of the density functional theory (DFT) calculation and characterization indicated that the effect of synergy between nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) bimetals induces an electron density growth on the Ni surface, bringing the d-band center toward the Fermi surface. Meanwhile, the high electron density of the active center compensates for the electron-deficient state of the carbon atom in -CN, thus improving the catalytic activity. Furthermore, it was found that the introduction of Ba promotes the formation of nucleophilic hydrogen anions, which facilitates the hydrogenation of 6-aminohexylimine (AHIM) to HDMA and inhibits the intramolecular condensation of AHIM, hence improving the selectivity to HDMA. The NiCo-NC@BaO-MFC catalyst gives 98.6 % ADN conversion and 97.2 % selectivity to HDMA in an alkali-free system.

Single-crystal oxygen-rich bismuth oxybromide nanosheets with highly exposed defective {10-1} facets for the selective oxidation of toluene under blue LED irradiation

Reactive radicals are crucial for activating inert and low-polarity C(sp3)-H bonds for the fabrication of high value-added products. Herein, novel single-crystal oxygen-rich bismuth oxybromide nanosheets (Bi4O5Br2 SCNs) with more than 85 % {10-1} facets exposure and oxygen defects were synthesized via a facile solvothermal route. The Bi4O5Br2 SCNs demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance in the selective oxidation of toluene under blue light. The yield of benzaldehyde was 1876.66 μmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity of approximately 90 %. Compared to that of polycrystalline Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets (Bi4O5Br2 PCNs), the activity of Bi4O5Br2 SCNs exhibit a 21-fold increase. Experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that the defect Bi4O5Br2 (10-1) facets exhibits exceptional adsorption properties for O2 molecules. In addition, the single-crystal structure in the presence of surface defects significantly increases the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, resulting in the effective activation of adsorbed O2 into superoxide radicals (•O2-). Subsequently, the positively charged phenylmethyl H is readily linked to the negatively charged superoxide radical anion, thereby activating the CH bond. This study offers a fresh perspective and valuable insights into the development of efficient molecular oxygen-activated photocatalysts and their application in the selective catalytic conversion of aromatic C(sp3)-H bonds.

Self-assembly of cascade nanoenzyme glucose oxidase encapsulated in copper benzenedicarboxylate for wearable sweat-glucose colorimetric sensors with smartphone readout

BACKGROUND

With the advent of personalized medical approaches, precise and tailored treatments are expected to become widely accepted for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Paper-based colorimetric sensors that function in combination with smartphones have been rapidly developed in recent years because it does not require additional equipment and is inexpensive and easy to perform. In this study, we developed a portable, low-cost, and wearable sweat-glucose detection device for in situ detection.

RESULTS

The sensor adopted an integrated biomimetic nanoenzyme of glucose oxidase (GOx) encapsulated in copper 1, 4-benzenedicarboxylate (CuBDC) (GOx@CuBDC) through a biomimetic mineralization process. CuBDC exhibited a peroxide-like effect, cascade catalytic effect with the encapsulated GOx, and increased the enzyme stability. GOx@CuBDC and 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine were combined to form a hybrid membrane that achieved single-step paper-based glucose detection.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

This GOx@CuBDC-based colorimetric glucose sensor was used to quantitatively analyze the sweat-glucose concentration with smartphone readings. The sensor exhibited a good linear relationship over the concentration range of 40-900 μM and a limit of detection of 20.7 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the sensor performed well in situ monitoring and in evaluating variations based on the consumption of foods with different glycemic indices. Therefore, the fabricated wearable sweat-glucose sensors exhibited optimal practical application performance.

Long-term evaluating the strengthening effects of iron-carbon mediator for coking wastewater treatment in EGSB reactor

Coking wastewater (CWW) treatment is difficult due to its complex composition and high biological toxicity. Iron-carbon mediators was used to enhance the treatment of CWW through iron-carbon microelectrolysis (ICME). The results indicated that the removal rate of COD and phenolic compounds were enhanced by 24.1 % and 23.5 %, while biogas production and methane content were promoted by 50 % and 7 %. Microbial community analysis indicated that iron-carbon mediators had a transformative impact on the reactor's performance and dependability by enriching microorganisms involved in direct and indirect electron transfer, such as Anaerolineae and Methanothrix. The mediator also produced noteworthy gains in LB-EPS and TB-EPS, increasing by roughly 109.3 % and 211.6 %, respectively. PICRISt analysis demonstrated that iron-carbon mediators effectively augment the abundance of functional genes associated with metabolism, Citrate cycle, and EET pathway. This study provides a new approach for CWW treatment.

Palladium-anchored calix[4]arene-derived porous organic polymer towards efficient hydrolytic cleavage of carbon disulfide

The release of carbon disulfide can have adverse effects on our environment and human health. The stability of carbon disulfide and the slow kinetics of hydrolysis can make it challenging to achieve efficient and practical cleavage of the CS bonds. Herein, a calix[4]arene-based porous organic polymer (CPOP-1) is innovatively synthesized through an optimized polycondensation reaction using C-Methylcalix[4]resorcinarene and hexafluoro-hexaazatriphenylene as monomers. Subsequently, palladium-induced calix[4]arene-based porous organic polymer was also synthesized via strong Pd-N coordination bonds to construct the metal-induced porous catalyst (CPOP-2). The polymeric catalyst active center [Pd2+(N^N)(NO3-)2] demonstrated outstanding catalytic hydrolysis performance (11.14 μmol g-1 h-1) in 10.5 h which is significantly enhanced by ca.13.2 times as compared to reported mononuclear Bpy-Pd(NO3)2, and 7.07 times than model trinuclear complex catalyst HATN-Pd-1, respectively. The control experiments revealed that POP catalysts showcased robust stability, prolonged effectiveness, and feasible recyclability during the hydrolytic cleavage of carbon disulfide at room temperature in aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the coordination environment of [Pd2+(N^N)] was validated through XPS, EXAFS, and isotope labeling measurements, and the hydrolysis cleavage products were confirmed e. g. CO2, sulfide, and protons. More importantly, a reaction mechanism was formulated coupled with theoretical calculations, and simulations. The proposed mechanism involves sequential OH- nucleophilic attacks on the carbon atoms of insert-coordinated CS2 and COS, leading to the cleavage of double CS bonds and the formation of CO bonds. The concurrent dissociation of the C-S bond and liberation of CO2 result in an intermediate structure characterized by [(N^N)Pd2+](SH-)2. This intermediate motif serves as the source of the thermodynamic driving force for the reaction.

Decoration of Ag nanoparticle on MXene sheets for SERS studies

MXene sheets with the unique electrical and optical properties show the excellent potential for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. In this study, we chose Ti3C2Tx, a type of MXene, to decorate silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) MXene sheets. The designed Ag-MXene substrates with SERS activity showed high sensitivity, high stability, and reproducibility. The SERS signal was enhanced by the synergistic contribution of both charge-transfer (CT) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) involving the Ag NPs and the MXene sheets. Due to the strong interaction between the probe molecules and Ag NPs which provided the nanoscale gap, the substrate exhibited remarkable SERS performance. A novel experimental strategy was developed to facilitate the controlled synthesis of noble metal NPs and MXene sheets and provide insights for further improving the practical applications of these materials in SERS detection.

Biochar immobilized hydrolase degrades PET microplastics and alleviates the disturbance of soil microbial function via modulating nitrogen and phosphorus cycles

Microplastics (MPs) pose an emerging threat to soil ecological function, yet effective solutions remain limited. This study introduces a novel approach using magnetic biochar immobilized PET hydrolase (MB-LCC-FDS) to degrade soil polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs). MB-LCC-FDS exhibited a 1.68-fold increase in relative activity in aquatic solutions and maintained 58.5 % residual activity after five consecutive cycles. Soil microcosm experiment amended with MB-LCC-FDS observed a 29.6 % weight loss of PET-MPs, converting PET into mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET). The generated MHET can subsequently be metabolized by soil microbiota to release terephthalic acid. The introduction of MB-LCC-FDS shifted the functional composition of soil microbiota, increasing the relative abundances of Microbacteriaceae and Skermanella while reducing Arthobacter and Vicinamibacteraceae. Metagenomic analysis revealed that MB-LCC-FDS enhanced nitrogen fixation, P-uptake and transport, and organic-P mineralization in PET-MPs contaminated soil, while weakening the denitrification and nitrification. Structural equation model indicated that changes in soil total carbon and Simpson index, induced by MB-LCC-FDS, were the driving factors for soil carbon and nitrogen transformation. Overall, this study highlights the synergistic role of magnetic biochar-immobilized PET hydrolase and soil microbiota in degrading soil PET-MPs, and enhances our understanding of the microbiome and functional gene responses to PET-MPs and MB-LCC-FDS in soil systems.

Chemoenzymatic synthesis of (1R,3R)-3-hydroxycyclopentanemethanol: An intermediate of carbocyclic-ddA

The synthesis of carbocyclic-ddA, a potent antiviral agent against hepatitis B, relies significantly on (1R,3R)-3-hydroxycyclopentanemethanol as a key intermediate. To effectively produce this intermediate, our study employed a chemoenzymatic approach. The selection of appropriate biocatalysts was based on substrate similarity, leading us to adopt the CrS enoate reductase derived from Thermus scotoductus SA-01. Additionally, we developed an enzymatic system for NADH regeneration, utilising formate dehydrogenase from Candida boidinii. This system facilitated the efficient catalysis of (S)-4-(hydroxymethyl)cyclopent-2-enone, resulting in the formation of (3R)-3-(hydroxymethyl) cyclopentanone. Furthermore, we successfully cloned, expressed, purified, and characterized the CrS enzyme in Escherichia coli. Optimal reaction conditions were determined, revealing that the highest activity occurred at 45 °C and pH 8.0. By employing 5 mM (S)-4-(hydroxymethyl)cyclopent-2-enone, 0.05 mM FMN, 0.2 mM NADH, 10 μM CrS, 40 μM formic acid dehydrogenase, and 40 mM sodium formate, complete conversion was achieved within 45 min at 35 °C and pH 7.0. Subsequently, (1R,3R)-3-hydroxycyclopentanemethanol was obtained through a simple three-step chemical conversion process. This study not only presents an effective method for synthesizing the crucial intermediate but also highlights the importance of biocatalysts and enzymatic systems in chemoenzymatic synthesis approaches.

Cocreation of photogenerated electron and hole collectors on polymeric carbon nitride synergistically promotes carrier separation and reaction kinetics towards propelling photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

It is a challenging issue for the creation of photogenerated carrier collectors on the photocatalyst to drive charge separation and promote reaction kinetics in the photocatalytic reaction. Herein, based on one-step dual-modulation strategy, IrO2 nanodots are modified at the edge of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) nanosheets and atomically dispersed Ir atoms are implanted in the skeleton of PCN to obtain a unique Ir-PCN/IrO2 photocatalyst. IrO2 nanodots and atomically dispersed Ir atoms act as hole and electron collectors to synergistically promote the carrier separation and reaction kinetics, respectively, thereby greatly improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) performance. As a result, without adding additional cocatalyst, the PHE rate over the optimal Ir-PCN/IrO2-2% sample reaches up to 1564.4 μmol h-1 g-1 under the visible light irradiation, with achieving an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.7% at 420 nm.

Oxygen-enriched carbon quantum dots from coffee waste: Extremely active organic photocatalyst for sustainable solar-to-H2O2 conversion

Solar-driven artificial photosynthesis offers a promising avenue for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation, an efficient and economical replacement for current methods. The efficiency and selectivity hurdles of the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in solar-to- H2O2 conversion are substantial barriers to large scale production. In this manuscript, a simple biomass-assisted synthesis was performed to produce oxygen-enriched carbon quantum dots (OE-CQDs) from spent coffee waste, acting as an efficient photocatalyst for solar-powered H2O2 production. OE-CQDs can stabilize and store light-generated electrons effectively, boosting charge separation and enhancing photocatalytic performance with longevity. The maximal photocatalytic H2O2 production was achieved viz the utilization of OE-CQDs with generation rate of 356.86 μmol g-1 h-1 by retaining 80% activity without any external sacrificial donors. The outstanding performance of synthesized OE-CQDs under light exposure at wavelength (λ) of 280 nm has been ensured by the quantum yield value of 9.4% upon H2O2 generation. The combinatorial benefits of OE-CQDs with their authentic crystalline structure and oxygen enrichment, is expected to be enhancing the ORR activity through accelerating charge transfer, and optimizing oxygen diffusion. Consequently, our eco-friendly method holds considerable promise for creating highly efficient, metal-free photocatalysts for artificial H2O2 production.

A critical review of approaches to enhance the performance of bio-electro-Fenton and photo-bio-electro-Fenton systems

The development of sustainable advanced energy conversion technologies and efficient pollutant treatment processes is a viable solution to the two global crises of the lack of non-renewable energy resources and environmental harm. In recent years, the interaction of biological and chemical oxidation units to utilize biomass has been extensively studied. Among these systems, bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) and photo-bio-electro-Fenton (PBEF) systems have shown prospects for application due to making rational and practical conversion and use of energy. This review compared and analyzed the electron transfer mechanisms in BEF and PBEF systems, and systematically summarized the techniques for enhancing system performance based on the generation, transfer, and utilization of electrons, including increasing the anode electron recovery efficiency, enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species, and optimizing operational modes. This review compared the effects of different methods on the electron flow process and fully evaluated the benefits and drawbacks. This review may provide straightforward suggestions and methods to enhance the performance of BEF and PBEF systems and inspire the reader to explore the generation and utilization of sustainable energy more deeply.

Direct conversion of CO2 to CH4 on Pd/graphdiyne single-crystalline

A major impediment to the development of the efficient use of artificial photosynthesis is the lack of highly selective and efficient photocatalysts toward the conversion of CO2 by sunlight energy at room temperature and ambient pressure. After many years of hard work, we finally completed the synthesis of graphdiyne-based palladium quantum dot catalysts containing high-density metal atom steps for selective artificial photosynthesis. The well-designed interface structure of the catalyst is composed of electron-donor and acceptor groups, resulting in the obvious incomplete charge-transfer phenomenon between graphdiyne and plasmonic metal nanostructures on the interface. These intrinsic characteristics are the origin of the high performance of the catalyst. Studies on its mechanism reveal that the synergism between 'hot electron' from local surface plasmon resonance and rapid photogenerated carrier separation at the ohmic contact interface accelerates the multi-electron reaction kinetics. The catalyst can selectively synthesize CH4 directly from CO2 and H2O with selectivity of near 100% at room temperature and pressure, and exhibits transformative performance, with an average CH4 yield of 26.2 μmol g-1 h-1 and remarkable long-term stability.

Tuning Pd species via electronic metal-support interaction for methane combustion

Utilizing catalytic combustion to convert methane (CH4) into CO2 and H2O stands as one of the most effective approaches for mitigating unburnt CH4 emissions from natural gas engines. Supported Pd catalysts have been extensively researched for their role in low-temperature CH4 combustion, with their catalytic activity greatly influenced by metal-support interactions. Surface interaction Pd phases, as a special type of Pd species originating from metal-support interactions on supported Pd catalysts, show controversial catalytic performance in CH4 combustion. Moreover, the impact of electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI, which refers to metal-support interactions associated with electron transfer) remains unclear. Hence, we opted for Ce-Zr solid solutions with different Ce:Zr molar ratios as supports and synthesized a range of supported Pd catalysts with varying EMSI intensities. Characterization revealed that as the oxygen vacancy concentration on the support increased, electron transfer weakened, leading to a higher Pd-O-Ce content, resulting in a lower CH4 activation barrier and better catalytic performance. This study offers a promising approach for regulating EMSI and active Pd species on supported catalysts in practical applications.

Na-Ru bimetallic functional sites promote photo-driven CO2 directed conversion into CH4

Recently, there has been a significant increase in interest in using photocatalysis for the energy conversion of polluting gases. In this research, sodium and ruthenium bimetallic functional sites co-modified bismuth tungstate (Ru/Na-Bi2WO6) nanoflower photocatalyst was synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The CO2 reduction products on the Bi2WO6 substrate were CO (1.66 μmol/g/h, 68 %) and CH4 (0.78 μmol/g/h, 32 %). After optimization, a significant change in the CO2 products of the Bi2WO6-based composite material was observed, with CO (0.61 μmol/g/h, 3.6 %) and CH4 (16.1 μmol/g/h, 96.4 %). Results showed that the dominance of CH4 as the main product in the Ru/Na-BWO system is attributed to the effective doping of Na, which generates impurity energy levels composed of oxygen vacancies, lowering the conduction band position of Bi2WO6, thereby suppressing CO generation, and enhancing CH4 selectivity by changing the CO2 activation pathway. The remarkable performance is ascribed to the synergized adsorption and activation of CO2 by the tandem Na+ sites and Ru0 sites. Specifically, the doped Na+ sites play a major role in promoting the adsorption CO2 molecules, while the Ru0 sites play a dominant role in facilitating the activation of the intermediates.

Reprogramming cellular metabolism to increase the efficiency of microbial cell factories

Recent studies are increasingly focusing on advanced biotechnological tools, self-adjusting smart microorganisms, and artificial intelligent networks, to engineer microorganisms with various functions. Microbial cell factories are a vital platform for improving the bioproduction of medicines, biofuels, and biomaterials from renewable carbon sources. However, these processes are significantly affected by cellular metabolism, and boosting the efficiency of microbial cell factories remains a challenge. In this review, we present a strategy for reprogramming cellular metabolism to enhance the efficiency of microbial cell factories for chemical biosynthesis, which improves our understanding of microbial physiology and metabolic control. Current methods are mainly focused on synthetic pathways, metabolic resources, and cell performance. This review highlights the potential biotechnological strategy to reprogram cellular metabolism and provide novel guidance for designing more intelligent industrial microbes with broader applications in this growing field.

Eco-friendly approaches for mitigating plastic pollution: advancements and implications for a greener future

Plastic pollution has become a global problem since the extensive use of plastic in industries such as packaging, electronics, manufacturing and construction, healthcare, transportation, and others. This has resulted in an environmental burden that is continually growing, which has inspired many scientists as well as environmentalists to come up with creative solutions to deal with this problem. Numerous studies have been reviewed to determine practical, affordable, and environmentally friendly solutions to regulate plastic waste by leveraging microbes' innate abilities to naturally decompose polymers. Enzymatic breakdown of plastics has been proposed to serve this goal since the discovery of enzymes from microbial sources that truly interact with plastic in its naturalistic environment and because it is a much faster and more effective method than others. The scope of diverse microbes and associated enzymes in polymer breakdown is highlighted in the current review. The use of co-cultures or microbial consortium-based techniques for the improved breakdown of plastic products and the generation of high-value end products that may be utilized as prototypes of bioenergy sources is highlighted. The review also offers a thorough overview of the developments in the microbiological and enzymatic biological degradation of plastics, as well as several elements that impact this process for the survival of our planet.

Bioremediation of organic pollutants by laccase-metal-organic framework composites: A review of current knowledge and future perspective

Immobilized laccases are widely used as green biocatalysts for bioremediation of phenolic pollutants and wastewater treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show potential application for immobilization of laccase. Their unique adsorption properties provide a synergic effect of adsorption and biodegradation. This review focuses on bioremediation of wastewater pollutants using laccase-MOF composites, and summarizes the current knowledge and future perspective of their biodegradation and the enhancement strategies of enzyme immobilization. Mechanistic strategies of preparation of laccase-MOF composites were mainly investigated via physical adsorption, chemical binding, and de novo/co-precipitation approaches. The influence of architecture of MOFs on the efficiency of immobilization and bioremediation were discussed. Moreover, as sustainable technology, the integration of laccases and MOFs into wastewater treatment processes represents a promising approach to address the challenges posed by industrial pollution. The MOF-laccase composites can be promising and reliable alternative to conventional techniques for the treatment of wastewaters containing pharmaceuticals, dyes, and phenolic compounds. The detailed exploration of various immobilization techniques and the influence of MOF architecture on performance provides valuable insights for optimizing these composites, paving the way for future advancements in environmental biotechnology. The findings of this research have the potential to influence industrial wastewater treatment and promoting cleaner treatment processes and contributing to sustainability efforts.

Selective production of high-value fuel via catalytic upgrading of bio-oil over nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid supported cobalt catalysts

Bio-oil derived from biomass fast pyrolysis can be upgraded to gasoline and diesel alternatives by catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Here, the novel nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid supported cobalt (Co/NCAn, n = 1, 2.5, 5) catalyst is established by a coagulation bath technique. The optimized Co/NCA2.5 catalyst presented 100 % conversion of guaiacol, high selectivity to cyclohexane (93.6 %), and extremely high deoxygenation degree (97.3 %), respectively. Therein, the formation of cyclohexanol was facilitated by stronger binding energy and greater charge transfer between Co and NC which was unraveled by density functional theory calculations. In addition, the appropriate amount of Lewis acid sites enhanced the cleavage of the C-O bond in cyclohexanol, finally resulting in a remarkable selectivity for cyclohexane. Finally, the Co/NCA2.5 catalyst also exhibited excellent selectivity (93.1 %) for high heating value hydrocarbon fuel in crude bio-oil HDO. This work provides a theoretical basis on N dopants collaborating alumina hybrid catalysts for efficient HDO reaction.

Implementation of π-π interaction in AuNPs@GDY to boost the bioelectrocatalysis in enzymatic biofuel cells

The main challenges (sluggish electron transfer, low energy density) hinder the future application of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs), which urgent to take effective measures to solve these issues. In this work, a composite of Au nanoparticles decorated graphdiyne (AuNPs@GDY) is fabricated and employed as the carrier of enzyme (G6PDH), and a mechanism based on π-π interaction of electron transfer is proposed to understand bioelectrocatalysis processes. The results show that the AuNPs@GDY composite exhibits the highest current density among the three materials (GDY, AuNPs, and AuNPs@GDY), which is 3.4 times higher than that of GDY and 2.5 times higher than that of AuNPs. Furthermore, the results reveal that the AuNPs could increase the loading of enzymes and provide more active site for reaction, while GDY provides highly π-conjugated structure and unique sp/sp2-hybridized linkages interface. This work provides new insights to explore a theoretical basis for the development of more efficient bioelectrocatalytic systems.

Designing asymmetrical TMN4 sites via phosphorus or sulfur dual coordination as high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

The development ofhighly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts based on more cost-effective and earth-abundant elements is of great significance and still faces a huge challenge. In this work, a series of transition metal (TM)embedding a newly-defined monolayer carbon nitride phase is theoretically profiled and constructed as a catalytic platform for OER studies. Typically, a four-step screening strategy was proposed to rapidly identified high performance candidates and the coordination structure and catalytic performance relationship was thoroughly analyzed. Moreover, the eliminating criterion was established to condenses valid range based on the Gibbs free energy of OH*. Our results reveal that the as-constructed 2FeCN/P exhibits superior activity toward OER with an ultralow overpotential of 0.25 V, at the same time, the established 3FeCN/S configuration performed well as abifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysis with extremely low overpotential ηOER/ηORR of 0.26/0.48 V. Overall, this work provides an effective framework for screening advanced OER catalysts, which can also be extended to other complex multistep catalytic reactions.

Tailoring competitive adsorption sites of hydroxide ion to enhance urea oxidation-assisted hydrogen production

Alloys with bimetallic electron modulation effect are promising catalysts for the electrooxidation of urea. However, the side reaction oxygen evolution reaction (OER) originating from the competitive adsorption of OH- and urea severely limited the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity on the alloy catalysts. This work successfully constructs the defect-rich NiCo alloy with lattice strain (PMo-NiCo/NF) by rapid pyrolysis and co-doping. By taking advantage of the compressive strain, the d-band center of NiCo is shifted downward, inhibiting OH- from adsorbing on the NiCo site and avoiding the detrimental OER. Meanwhile, the oxygenophilic P/Mo tailored specific adsorption sites to adsorb OH- preferentially, which further released the NiCo sites to ensure the enriched adsorption of urea, thus improving the UOR efficiency. As a result, PMo-NiCo/NF only requires 1.27 V and -57 mV to drive a current density of ±10 mA cm-2 for UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. With the guidance of this work, reactant competing adsorption sites could be tailored for effective electrocatalytic performance.

Upcycling CO2 into succinic acid via electrochemical and engineered Escherichia coli

Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals still remains a grand challenge. Succinic acid has long been considered as one of the top building block chemicals. This study reported efficiently upcycling CO2 into succinic acid by combining between electrochemical and engineered Escherichia coli. In this process, the Cu-organic framework catalyst was synthesized for electrocatalytic CO2-to-ethanol conversion with high Faradaic efficiency (FE, 84.7 %) and relative purity (RP, 95 wt%). Subsequently, an engineered E. coli with efficiently assimilating CO2-derived ethanol to produce succinic acid was constructed by combining computational design and metabolic engineering, and the succinic acid titer reached 53.8 mM with the yield of 0.41 mol/mol, which is 82 % of the theoretical yield. This study effort to link the two processes of efficient ethanol synthesis by electrocatalytic CO2 and succinic acid production from CO2-derived ethanol, paving a way for the production of succinic acid and other value-added chemicals by converting CO2 into ethanol.

Ultrafine Co-MoC particles in porous carbon derived from polyoxometalate-based metal organic framework for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Accurately regulating ultrafine molybdenum carbide (MoC)-based catalysts is a significant challenge in the rational design of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Herein, under the guidance of the first principle calculations, we proposed an in-situ polyoxometalate-confined strategy for creating uniformly distributed ultrafine Co-MoC bimetallic nanoparticles in porous carbon nanostars, with the assistance of precisely designed metal-organic framework (MOF). The Co-MoC@C electrocatalyst has a high specific surface area of 969 m2·g-1 because of the conductive carbon substrate with abundant mesopores, which makes for exposing more active sites of Co-MoC nanocrystals (∼1.5 nm) and facilitating electron/ion transport. Thus, Co-MoC@C electrocatalyst shows the excellent electrochemical activity with overpotentials of 88.4 mV and 66.6 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. The in-situ polyoxometalate-confined strategy will provide a new guideline for the design and preparation of efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Lewis-base ligand-reshaped interfacial hydrogen-bond network boosts CO2 electrolysis

Both the catalyst and electrolyte strongly impact the performance of CO2 electrolysis. Despite substantial progress in catalysts, it remains highly challenging to tailor electrolyte compositions and understand their functions at the catalyst interface. Here, we report that the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its analogs, featuring strong Lewis acid-base interaction with metal cations, are selected as electrolyte additives to reshape the catalyst-electrolyte interface for promoting CO2 electrolysis. Mechanistic studies reveal that EDTA molecules are dynamically assembled toward interface regions in response to bias potential due to strong Lewis acid-base interaction of EDTA4--K+. As a result, the original hydrogen-bond network among interfacial H2O is disrupted, and a hydrogen-bond gap layer at the electrified interface is established. The EDTA-reshaped K+ solvation structure promotes the protonation of *CO2 to *COOH and suppressing *H2O dissociation to *H, thereby boosting the co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O toward carbon-based products. In particular, when 5 mM of EDTA is added into the electrolytes, the Faradaic efficiency of CO on the commercial Ag nanoparticle catalyst is increased from 57.0% to 90.0% at an industry-relevant current density of 500 mA cm-2. More importantly, the Lewis-base ligand-reshaped interface allows a range of catalysts (Ag, Zn, Pd, Bi, Sn, and Cu) to deliver substantially increased selectivity of carbon-based products in both H-type and flow-type electrolysis cells.

Efficient thermophilic polyethylene terephthalate hydrolase enhanced by cross correlation-based accumulated mutagenesis strategy

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has caused significant pollution issues. Compared to chemical degradation with high energy consumption and cost, enzymatic degradation offers a sustainable solution for PET waste recycling. However, the hydrolytic activity of current PET hydrolases still requires improvement. In this study, a cross-correlation-based accumulated mutagenesis (CAM) strategy was developed to enhance the hydrolysis activity. By mitigating epistatic effect and combinational mutations, we achieved a highly active variant LCC-YGA (H183Y/L124G/S29A) with 2.1-fold hydrolytic activity on amorphous PET films of LCC-ICCG. Conformational analysis elucidated how the introduction of distal mutations enhanced activity. The dynamic correlation among different regions facilitated a synergistic effect, enhancing binding pocket flexibility through remote interactions. Totally, this work offers novel insights and methods for PET hydrolases engineering and provides an efficient enzyme for PET degradation and recycling.

Site-selective peptide bond hydrolysis and ligation in water by short peptide-based assemblies

The evolution of complex chemical inventory from Darwin's nutrient-rich warm pond necessitated rudimentary yet efficient catalytic folds. Short peptides and their self-organized microstructures, ranging from spherical colloids to amyloidogenic aggregates might have played a crucial role in the emergence of contemporary catalytic entities. However, the question of how short peptide fragments had functions akin to contemporary complex enzymes to catalyze cleavage and formation of highly stable peptide bonds that constitute the backbone of all proteins remains an unresolved yet fundamentally important question in terms of the origins of enzymes. We report short-peptide-based spherical assemblies that demonstrated residue-specific cleavage and formation of peptide bonds of diverse peptide-based substrates under aqueous environment. Despite the short sequence length, the assemblies utilized the synergistic collaboration of four residues which included the catalytic triad of extant serine proteases with a nonproteinogenic amino acid (quinone moiety), to facilitate proteolysis, ligation, and a three-step (hydrolysis-ligation-hydrolysis) cascade. Such short-peptide-based catalytic assemblies argue for their candidacy as the earliest protein folds and open up avenues for biotechnological applications.

Thermally stable high-loading single Cu sites on ZSM-5 for selective catalytic oxidation of NH3

Rigorous comparisons between single site- and nanoparticle (NP)-dispersed catalysts featuring the same composition, in terms of activity, selectivity, and reaction mechanism, are limited. This limitation is partly due to the tendency of single metal atoms to sinter into aggregated NPs at high loadings and elevated temperatures, driven by a decrease in metal surface free energy. Here, we have developed a unique two-step method for the synthesis of single Cu sites on ZSM-5 (termed CuS/ZSM-5) with high thermal stability. The atomic-level dispersion of single Cu sites was confirmed through scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The CuS/ZSM-5 catalyst was compared to a CuO NP-based catalyst (termed CuN/ZSM-5) in the oxidation of NH3 to N2, with the former exhibiting superior activity and selectivity. Furthermore, operando XAFS and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy studies were conducted to simultaneously assess the fate of the Cu and the surface adsorbates, providing a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of the two catalysts. The study shows that the facile redox behavior exhibited by single Cu sites correlates with the enhanced activity observed for the CuS/ZSM-5 catalyst.

Synergistic material-microbe interface toward deeper anaerobic defluorination

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), particularly the perfluorinated ones, are recalcitrant to biodegradation. By integrating an enrichment culture of reductive defluorination with biocompatible electrodes for the electrochemical process, a deeper defluorination of a C6-perfluorinated unsaturated PFAS was achieved compared to the biological or electrochemical system alone. Two synergies in the bioelectrochemical system were identified: i) The in-series microbial-electrochemical defluorination and ii) the electrochemically enabled microbial defluorination of intermediates. These synergies at the material-microbe interfaces surpassed the limitation of microbial defluorination and further turned the biotransformation end products into less fluorinated products, which could be less toxic and more biodegradable in the environment. This material-microbe hybrid system brings opportunities in the bioremediation of PFAS driven by renewable electricity and warrants future research on mechanistic understanding of defluorinating and electroactive microorganisms at the material-microbe interface for system optimizations.

Engineered Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyases for the Enantioselective Synthesis of Aspartic Acid Derivatives

Biocatalytic hydroamination of alkenes is an efficient and selective method to synthesize natural and unnatural amino acids. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyases (PALs) have been previously engineered to access a range of substituted phenylalanines and heteroarylalanines, but their substrate scope remains limited, typically including only arylacrylic acids. Moreover, the enantioselectivity in the hydroamination of electron-deficient substrates is often poor. Here, we report the structure-based engineering of PAL from Planctomyces brasiliensis (PbPAL), enabling preparative-scale enantioselective hydroaminations of previously inaccessible yet synthetically useful substrates, such as amide- and ester-containing fumaric acid derivatives. Through the elucidation of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) PbPAL structure and screening of the structure-based mutagenesis library, we identified the key active site residue L205 as pivotal for dramatically enhancing the enantioselectivity of hydroamination reactions involving electron-deficient substrates. Our engineered PALs demonstrated exclusive α-regioselectivity, high enantioselectivity, and broad substrate scope. The potential utility of the developed biocatalysts was further demonstrated by a preparative-scale hydroamination yielding tert-butyl protected l-aspartic acid, widely used as intermediate in peptide solid-phase synthesis.

Cu1-Fe Dual Sites for Superior Neutral Ammonia Electrosynthesis from Nitrate

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is able to convert nitrate (NO3 -) into reusable ammonia (NH3), offering a green treatment and resource utilization strategy of nitrate wastewater and ammonia synthesis. The conversion of NO3 - to NH3 undergoes water dissociation to generate active hydrogen atoms and nitrogen-containing intermediates hydrogenation tandemly. The two relay processes compete for the same active sites, especially under pH-neutral condition, resulting in the suboptimal efficiency and selectivity in the electrosynthesis of NH3 from NO3 -. Herein, we constructed a Cu1-Fe dual-site catalyst by anchoring Cu single atoms on amorphous iron oxide shell of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the electrochemical NO3RR, achieving an impressive NO3 - removal efficiency of 94.8 % and NH3 selectivity of 99.2 % under neutral pH and nitrate concentration of 50 mg L-1 NO3 --N conditions, greatly surpassing the performance of nZVI counterpart. This superior performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of enhanced NO3 - adsorption on Fe sites and strengthened water activation on single-atom Cu sites, decreasing the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of *NO-to-*NOH. This work develops a novel strategy of fabricating dual-site catalysts to enhance the electrosynthesis of NH3 from NO3 -, and presents an environmentally sustainable approach for neutral nitrate wastewater treatment.

Boosting the Electroreduction of CO2 to CO by Ligand Engineering of Gold Nanoclusters

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been widely studied as a promising means to convert anthropogenic CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this process, the alkali metal ions present in the electrolyte are known to significantly influence the CO2RR activity and selectivity. In this study, we report a strategy for preparing efficient electrocatalysts by introducing a cation-relaying ligand, namely 6-mercaptohexanoic acid (MHA), into atom-precise Au25 nanoclusters (NCs). The CO2RR activity of the synthesized Au25(MHA)18 NCs was compared with that of Au25(HT)18 NCs (HT=1-hexanethiolate). While both NCs selectively produced CO over H2, the CO2-to-CO conversion activity of the Au25(MHA)18 NCs was significantly higher than that of the Au25(HT)18 NCs when the catholyte pH was higher than the pKa of MHA, demonstrating the cation-relaying effect of the anionic terminal group. Mechanistic investigations into the CO2RR occurring on the Au25 NCs in the presence of different catholyte cations and concentrations revealed that the CO2-to-CO conversion activities of these Au25 NCs increased in the order Li+ Collapse

Elevated Water Oxidation by Cation Leaching Enabled Tunable Surface Reconstruction

Water electrolysis is one promising and eco-friendly technique for energy storage, yet its overall efficiency is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, developing strategies to boost OER catalyst performance is crucial. With the advances in characterization techniques, an extensive phenomenon of surface structure evolution into an active amorphous layer was uncovered. Surface reconstruction in a controlled fashion was then proposed as an emerging strategy to elevate water oxidation efficiency. In this work, Cr substitution induces the reconstruction of NiFexCr2-xO4 during cyclic voltammetry (CV) conditioning by Cr leaching, which leads to a superior OER performance. The best-performed NiFe0.25Cr1.75O4 shows a ~1500 % current density promotion at overpotential η=300 mV, which outperforms many advanced NiFe-based OER catalysts. It is also found that their OER activities are mainly determined by Ni : Fe ratio rather than considering the contribution of Cr. Meanwhile, the turnover frequency (TOF) values based on redox peak and total mass were obtained and analysed, and their possible limitations in the case of NiFexCr2-xO4 are discussed. Additionally, the high activity and durability were further verified in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell, highlighting its potential for practical large-scale and sustainable hydrogen gas generation.

Anion Modulation of Ag-Imidazole Cuboctahedral Cage Microenvironments for Efficient Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

How to achieve CO2 electroreduction in high efficiency is a current challenge with the mechanism not well understood yet. The metal-organic cages with multiple metal sites, tunable active centers, and well-defined microenvironments may provide a promising catalyst model. Here, we report self-assembly of Ag4L4 type cuboctahedral cages from coordination dynamic Ag+ ion and triangular imidazolyl ligand 1,3,5-tris(1-benzylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (Ag-MOC-X, X=NO3, ClO4, BF4) via anion template effect. Notably, Ag-MOC-NO3 achieves the highest CO faradaic efficiency in pH-universal electrolytes of 86.1 % (acidic), 94.1 % (neutral) and 95.3 % (alkaline), much higher than those of Ag-MOC-ClO4 and Ag-MOC-BF4 with just different counter anions. In situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy observes formation of vital intermediate *COOH for CO2-to-CO conversion. The density functional theory calculations suggest that the adsorption of CO2 on unsaturated Ag-site is stabilized by C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen-bonding of CO2 in a microenvironment surrounded by three benzimidazole rings, and the activation of CO2 is dependent on the coordination dynamics of Ag-centers modulated by the hosted anions through Ag⋅⋅⋅X interactions. This work offers a supramolecular electrocatalytic strategy based on Ag-coordination geometry and host-guest interaction regulation of MOCs as high-efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction to CO which is a key intermediate in chemical industry process.

Electrocatalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of 1-Octene with [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)(Cl)] and Water

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 1-octene as non-activated model substrate with neutral water as H-donor is reported, using [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)(Cl)] (1) as the catalyst, to form octane with high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96 % and a kobs of 87 s-1. Cyclic voltammetry with 1 revealed that two subsequent reductions trigger the elimination of Cl- and afford the highly reactive anionic Ir(I) hydride complex [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)]- (2), a previously merely proposed intermediate for which we now report first experimental data by mass spectrometry. In absence of alkene, the stoichiometric electrolysis of 1 in THF with water selectively affords the Ir(III) dihydride complex [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)2] (3) in 88 % FE from the reaction of 2 with H2O. Complex 3 then hydrogenates the alkene in classical fashion. The presented electro-hydrogenation works with extremely high FE, because the iridium hydrides are water stable, which prevents H2 formation. Even in strongly alkaline conditions (Bu4NOH added), the electro-hydrogenation of 1-octene with 1 also proceeds cleanly (89 % FE), suggesting a highly robust process that may rely on H2O activation, reminiscent to transfer hydrogenation pathways, instead of classical H+ reduction. DFT calculations confirmed oxidative addition of H2O as a key step in this context.

Tuning Adsorbate-Mediated Strong Metal-Support Interaction by Oxygen Vacancy: A Case Study in Ru/TiO2

The adsorbate-mediated strong metal-support interaction (A-SMSI) offers a reversible means of altering the selectivity of supported metal catalysts, thereby providing a powerful tool for facile modulation of catalytic performance. However, the fundamental understanding of A-SMSI remains inadequate and methods for tuning A-SMSI are still in their nascent stages, impeding its stabilization under reaction conditions. Here, we report that the initial concentration of oxygen vacancy in oxide supports plays a key role in tuning the A-SMSI between Ru nanoparticles and defected titania (TiO2-x). Based on this new understanding, we demonstrate the in situ formation of A-SMSI under reaction conditions, obviating the typically required CO2-rich pretreatment. The as-formed A-SMSI layer exhibits remarkable stability at various temperatures, enabling excellent activity, selectivity and long-term stability in catalyzing the reverse water gas-shift reaction. This study deepens the understanding of the A-SMSI and the ability to stabilize A-SMSI under reaction conditions represents a key step for practical catalytic applications.
