Neurological abnormalities in individuals with Marfan syndrome: results from a genetically confirmed Italian cohort

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Neurological abnormalities have been frequently reported in individuals with Marfan Syndrome (MFS). However, available data relies solely on retrospective studies predating current diagnostic criteria.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study comprehensively investigating neurological abnormalities within a prospective cohort of adults (≥ 18 years) with genetically confirmed MFS referred to an Italian hub center for heritable connective tissue diseases (Jan. 1st - Nov. 15th, 2021).

RESULTS

We included a total of 38 individuals (53% female). The commonest neurological symptom was migraine (58%), usually without aura (73%). Neuropsychological testing was generally unremarkable, whilst anxiety and depression were highly prevalent within our cohort (42% and 34%, respectively). The most frequent brain parenchymal abnormality was the presence of cortico-subcortical hypointense spots on brain MRI T2* Gradient-Echo sequences (39%), which were found only in patients with a prior history of aortic surgery. Migraineurs had a higher frequency of brain vessels tortuosity vs. individuals without migraine (73% vs. 31%; p = 0.027) and showed higher average and maximum tortuosity indexes in both anterior and posterior circulation brain vessels (all p < 0.05). At univariate regression analysis, the presence of brain vessels tortuosity was significantly associated with a higher risk of migraine (OR 5.87, CI 95% 1.42-24.11; p = 0.014).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study confirms that neurological abnormalities are frequent in individuals with MFS. While migraine appears to be associated with brain vessels tortuosity, brain parenchymal abnormalities are typical of individuals with a prior history of aortic surgery. Larger prospective studies are needed to understand the relationship between parenchymal abnormalities and long-term cognitive outcomes.

Association between workplace health promotion service utilisation and depressive symptoms among workers: a nationwide survey

OBJECTIVES

Workplace-related factors are associated with the risk of depression. Despite implementation of workplace health promotion (WHP) programmes in China to promote the physical and mental well-being of workers, the relationship between WHP and depression has received limited attention. This study investigated the association between WHP service utilisation and depressive symptoms among workers.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional survey.

METHODS

A researcher-designed questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographic and occupational characteristics, WHP service utilisation, and mental health status. The Lasso method was used for variable selection to achieve dimension reduction, and logistic regression was used to assess the association between WHP service utilisation and depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

The analysis included 11,710 workers, of whom 17.0% had depressive symptoms. Lasso regression resulted in 6 of 18 WHP services showing significant negative associations with depressive symptoms, including occupational safety training, mental health services, health check-ups, sports activities, fitness rooms, and healthy canteens. The logistic regression results showed that, after adjusting for sociodemographic and occupational factors, utilisation of these six services was associated with a decreased likelihood of depressive symptoms. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73-0.96) for occupational safety training, aOR: 0.82 (95% CI: 0.68-0.99) for mental health services, aOR: 0.80 (95% CI: 0.71-0.90) for health check-ups, aOR: 0.68 (95% CI: 0.57-0.80) for sports activities, aOR: 0.59 (95% CI: 0.47-0.74) for fitness rooms and aOR: 0.72 (95% CI: 0.59-0.87) for healthy canteens.

CONCLUSIONS

Utilisation of WHP services was associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms. Implementation of WHP services and the provision of a supportive workplace environment should be prioritised to benefit the mental health of workers.

The prevalence of depression in people following limb amputation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

To estimate the prevalence of depression in people with limb amputation. Additionally, factors affecting the prevalence or pattern of depression following limb amputation were explored.

METHODS

Systematic literature search to identify all relevant studies assessing prevalence of depression following limb amputations was conducted through following databases: PubMed/ MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science. Search period was since inception of database till December 2021. Meta-analyses using random-effects model were conducted to estimate pooled prevalence of depression.

RESULTS

A total of 61 studies comprising 9852 limb amputees were included. Pooled prevalence of depression following limb amputations was 33.85% (95% CI: 27.15% to 40.54%), with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 98.57%; p < 0.001). Sub-group meta-analysis showed that pooled prevalence of depression was significantly higher in studies conducted from middle-income (45.31%, 95% CI: 28.92% to 61.70%) as compared high income countries (28.31%, 95% CI: 23.97% to 32.64%). Greater activity restriction, amputation-related body image disturbances, social discomfort, perceived vulnerability regarding disability, and avoidant coping style were commonly reported factors associated with greater depression symptomatology. Whereas, good perceived social support, and use of more active coping strategies were commonly reported protective factors.

CONCLUSION

About one-third of all limb amputees suffered from clinically significant depression. This emphasizes need to sensitize health care professionals involved in providing care to people following limb amputation regarding the importance of periodically screening this vulnerable group of patients for depression and liaising with psychiatrists. Further, addressing risk factors identified in this review could help in reducing the rates of depression post-amputation.

Prevalence of body-focused repetitive behaviors in a diverse population sample - rates across age, gender, race and education

BACKGROUND

Prevalence estimates for body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania differ greatly across studies owing to several confounding factors (e.g. different criteria). For the present study, we recruited a diverse online sample to provide estimates for nine subtypes of BFRBs and body-focused repetitive disorders (BFRDs).

METHODS

The final sample comprised 1481 individuals from the general population. Several precautions were taken to recruit a diverse sample and to exclude participants with low reliability. We matched participants on gender, race, education and age range to allow unbiased interpretation.

RESULTS

While almost all participants acknowledged at least one BFRB in their lifetime (97.1%), the rate for BFRDs was 24%. Nail biting (11.4%), dermatophagia (8.7%), skin picking (8.2%), and lip-cheek biting (7.9%) were the most frequent BFRDs. Whereas men showed more lifetime BFRBs, the rate of BFRDs was higher in women than in men. Rates of BFRDs were low in older participants, especially after the age of 40. Overall, BFRBs and BFRDs were more prevalent in White than in non-White individuals. Education did not show a strong association with BFRB/BFRDs.

DISCUSSION

BFRBs are ubiquitous. More severe forms, BFRDs, manifest in approximately one out of four people. In view of the often-irreversible somatic sequelae (e.g. scars) BFRBs/BFRDs deserve greater diagnostic and therapeutic attention by clinicians working in both psychology/psychiatry and somatic medicine (especially dermatology and dentistry).

Brain white matter microstructural alterations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: an automated fiber quantification study

This study aimed to identify damaged segments of brain white matter fiber tracts in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based automated fiber quantification (AFQ), and analyze their relationship with cognitive impairment. Clinical and imaging data for 39 female patients with SLE and for 44 female healthy controls (HCs) were collected. AFQ was used to track whole-brain white matter tracts in each participant, and each tract was segmented into 100 equally spaced nodes. DTI metrics including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) were calculated at each node. Correlations were also explored between DTI metrics in the damaged segments of white matter fiber tracts and neuropsychological test scores of patients with SLE. Compared with HCs, SLE patients exhibited significantly lower FA values, and significantly higher MD, AD, RD values in many white matter tracts (all P < 0.05, false discovery rate-corrected). FA values in nodes 97-100 of the left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) positively correlated with the mini-mental state examination score. AFQ enables precise and accurate identification of damage to white matter fiber tracts in brains of patients with SLE. FA values in the left IFOF correlate with cognitive impairment in SLE.

The epidemiologic and economic burden of dengue in Singapore: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Despite its well-regarded vector control program, Singapore remains susceptible to dengue epidemics. To assist evaluation of dengue interventions, we aimed to synthesize current data on the epidemiologic and economic burden of dengue in Singapore.

METHODOLOGY

We used multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, international/national repositories, surveillance) to search for published and gray literature (2000-2022). We included observational and cost studies, and two interventional studies, reporting Singapore-specific data on our co-primary outcomes, dengue incidence and dengue-related costs. Quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and an adapted cost-of-illness evaluation checklist. We performed a narrative synthesis and grouped studies according to reported outcomes and available stratified analyses.

FINDINGS

In total, 333 reports (330 epidemiological, 3 economic) were included. Most published epidemiological studies (89%) and all economic studies were of good quality. All gray literature reports were from the Ministry of Health or National Environment Agency. Based predominantly on surveillance data, Singapore experienced multiple outbreaks in 2000-2021, attaining peak incidence rate in 2020 (621.1 cases/100,000 person-years). Stratified analyses revealed the highest incidence rates in DENV-2 and DENV-3 serotypes and the 15-44 age group. Among dengue cases, the risk of hospitalization has been highest in the ≥45-year-old age groups while the risks of dengue hemorrhagic fever and death have generally been low (both <1%) for the last decade. Our search yielded limited data on deaths by age, severity, and infection type (primary, secondary, post-secondary). Seroprevalence (dengue immunoglobulin G) increases with age but has remained <50% in the general population. Comprising 21-63% indirect costs, dengue-related total costs were higher in 2010-2020 (SGD 148 million) versus the preceding decade (SGD 58-110 million).

CONCLUSION

Despite abundant passive surveillance data, more stratified and up-to-date data on the epidemiologic and economic burden of dengue are warranted in Singapore to continuously assess prevention and management strategies.

Joint effects of traffic-related air pollution and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy on maternal postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms

BACKGROUND

Ambient air pollution has been linked to postpartum depression. However, few studies have investigated the effects of traffic-related NOx on postpartum depression and whether any pregnancy-related factors might increase susceptibility.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the association between traffic-related NOx and postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms, and effect modification by pregnancy-related hypertension.

METHODS

This study included 453 predominantly low-income Hispanic/Latina women in the MADRES cohort. Daily traffic-related NOx concentrations by road class were estimated using the California LINE-source dispersion model (CALINE4) at participants' residential locations and averaged across pregnancy. Postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated by a validated questionnaire (Postpartum Distress Measure, PDM) at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postpartum. Multivariate linear regressions were performed to estimate the associations at each timepoint. Interaction terms were added to the linear models to assess effect modification by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs). Repeated measurement analyses were conducted by using mixed effect models.

RESULTS

We found prenatal traffic-related NOx was associated with increased PDM scores. Specifically, mothers exposed to an IQR (0.22 ppb) increase in NOx from major roads had 3.78% (95% CI: 0.53-7.14%) and 5.27% (95% CI: 0.33-10.45%) significantly higher 3-month and 12-month PDM scores, respectively. Similarly, in repeated measurement analyses, higher NOx from major roads was associated with 3.06% (95% CI: 0.43-5.76%) significantly higher PDM scores across the first year postpartum. Effect modification by HDPs was observed: higher freeway/highway and total NOx among mothers with HDPs were associated with significantly higher PDM scores at 12 months postpartum compared to those without HDPs.

IMPACT

This study shows that prenatal traffic-related air pollution was associated with postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms. The study also found novel evidence of greater susceptibility among women with HDPs, which advances the understanding of the relationships between air pollution, maternal cardiometabolic health during pregnancy and postpartum mental health. Our study has potential implications for clinical intervention to mitigate the effects of traffic-related pollution on postpartum mental health disorders. The findings can also offer valuable insights into urban planning strategies concerning the implementation of emission control measures and the creation of green spaces.

A modified persian version of the self-stigma of depression scale among the Iranian population: a methodological study in 2023

INTRODUCTION

This cross -sectional research evaluated the psychometric properties of the Self-Stigma of Depression Scale (SSDS) among Iranian people.

METHODS

This methodological study was conducted among 881 people in 2023, Iran. The method of proportional stratified sampling was used to select participants. To evaluate the validity, face, content, construct, convergent, and discriminant were evaluated. The reliability of SSDS was assessed with the McDonald's omega coefficient, Cronbach α coefficient, and test- retest (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient).

RESULTS

In confirmatory factor analysis, the factor loading of all items of SSDS was more than 0.5, and two items had low factor loading. After deleted these items, goodness of fit indexes (such as GFI = 0.945, RMSEA = 0.067, AGFI = 0.917, CFI = 0.941, RFI = 0.905) confirmed the final model with 14 items and four factors of social inadequacy (3 items), help-seeking inhibition (4 questions), self-blame (3 questions), and shame (4 questions). In the reliability phase, for all items of SSDS, Cronbach α coefficient was 0.850, the McDonald omega coefficient was 0.853, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.903.

CONCLUSION

The Persian form of SSDS was approved with 14 items and four factors: social inadequacy, help-seeking inhibition, self-blame, and shame. This tool can be used to check the status of self-stigmatization of depression in different groups.

Are There Biological Correlates of Response to Yoga-Based Interventions in Depression? A Critical Scoping Review

Depression is the most common mental disorder worldwide. Both antidepressants and psychotherapy are effective in treating depression, but the response to these treatments is often incomplete. Yoga-based interventions (YBIs) have been advocated by some researchers as a promising form of alternative treatment for depression. Recent research has attempted to identify the biological mechanisms associated with the antidepressant actions of YBIs. In this scoping review, conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, the PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to retrieve research on biomarkers of response to YBIs in patients with depression. These studies were also critically reviewed to evaluate their methodological quality and any sources of bias. Nineteen studies were included in the review. Based on these studies, there is preliminary evidence that YBIs may be associated with increased serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and reduced serum cortisol and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in patients with depression. However, many of these changes were also observed in the control arms, and the overall quality of the research was low. At present, it cannot be concluded that there are reliable biomarkers of response to YBIs in depression, though there are some potential biological correlates. Further advances in this field will depend critically on improvements in study design, particularly the minimization of sources of bias and the selection of more specific and sensitive biomarkers based on existing evidence from other treatment modalities.

Effect of a high dose atorvastatin as added-on therapy on symptoms and serum AMPK/NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-6/STAT3 axes in patients with major depressive disorder: randomized controlled clinical study

Background

Neuroinflammation pathways have been associated with the development of major depressive disorders (MDD). The anti-inflammatory characteristics of statins have been demonstrated to have significance in the pathophysiology of depression.

Aim

To investigate the mechanistic pathways of high dose atorvastatin in MDD.

Patients and methods

This trial included 60 patients with MDD who met the eligibility requirements. Two groups of patients (n = 30) were recruited by selecting patients from the Psychiatry Department. Group 1 received 20 mg of fluoxetine plus a placebo once daily. Group 2 received fluoxetine and atorvastatin (80 mg) once daily. All patients were assessed by a psychiatrist using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). A HDRS score of ≤7 indicates remission or partial remission [HDRS<17 and>7]. Response was defined as ≥ 50% drop in the HDRS score. The serum concentrations of nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP-3), interleukin-6 (IL-6), adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK), and signal transducer and activator of transcription factor-3 (STAT-3) were measured.

Results

The atorvastatin group showed a significant reduction in the levels of all measured markers along with a statistical increase in the levels of AMPK when compared to the fluoxetine group. The atorvastatin group displayed a significant decrease in HDRS when compared to its baseline and the fluoxetine group. The response rate and partial remission were higher in the atorvastatin group than fluoxetine (p = 0.03, and p = 0.005), respectively.

Conclusion

These results imply that atorvastatin at high doses may be a promising adjuvant therapy for MDD patients by altering the signaling pathways for AMPK/NLRP3 and IL-6/STAT-3.

Positive Effect of 6-Gingerol on Functional Plasticity of Microglia in a rat Model of LPS-induced Depression

Neuroinflammation has emerged as a crucial factor in the development of depression. Despite the well-known anti-inflammatory properties of 6-gingerol, its potential impact on depression remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the antidepressant effects of 6-gingerol by suppressing microglial activation. In vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of 6-gingerol on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced behavioral changes and neuroinflammation in rat models. In vitro studies were performed to examine the neuroprotective properties of 6-gingerol against LPS-induced microglial activation. Furthermore, a co-culture system of microglia and neurons was established to assess the influence of 6-gingerol on the expression of synaptic-related proteins, namely synaptophysin (SYP) and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95), which are influenced by microglial activation. In the in vivo experiments, administration of 6-gingerol effectively alleviated LPS-induced depressive behavior in rats. Moreover, it markedly suppressed the activation of rat prefrontal cortex (PFC) microglia induced by LPS and the activation of the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammatory pathway, while also reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. In the in vitro experiments, 6-gingerol mitigated nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65, NLRP3 activation, and maturation of IL-1β and IL-18, all of which were induced by LPS. Furthermore, in the co-culture system of microglia and neurons, 6-gingerol effectively restored the decreased expression of SYP and PSD95. The findings of this study demonstrate the neuroprotective effects of 6-gingerol in the context of LPS-induced depression-like behavior. These effects are attributed to the inhibition of microglial hyperactivation through the suppression of the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammatory pathway.

Pharmacological investigation of taxifolin for its therapeutic potential in depression

The current study aimed to investigate the influence of taxifolin on depression symptoms alleviation in Male Sprague-Dawley rats by targeting underlying pathways of depression. Molecular docking analyses were conducted to validate taxifolin's binding affinities against various targets. In silico analysis of taxifolin revealed various aspects of post docking interactions with different protein targets. Depression was induced in rats via intraperitoneal injection of Lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 500 μ g/Kg) for 14 alternative days. Rats (n = 6/group) were randomly assigned to four groups: (i) Saline/Control, (ii) Disease (LPS 500 μg/kg), (iii) Standard (fluoxetine 20 mg/kg), and (iv) Treatment (taxifolin 20 mg/kg). At the end of the in vivo study, brain samples were used for biochemical and morphological analysis. Taxifolin exhibited neuroprotective effects, as evidenced by behavioral studies, antioxidant analysis, histopathological examination, immunohistochemistry, ELISA and RT PCR, indicating an increase number of surviving neurons, normalization of cell size and shape, and reduction in vacuolization. Taxifolin also decreased inflammatory markers such as TNF-α, NF-κb, IL-6 and COX-2, while significantly upregulating and activating the protective PPAR-γ pathway, through which it reduces the oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, thereby ameliorating depression symptoms in experimental rat model of depression. Our finding suggests that taxifolin act as neuroprotective agent partially mediated through PPAR-γ pathway.

Concentrated transdiagnostic and cross-disciplinary micro-choice based group treatment for patients with depression and with anxiety leads to lasting improvements after 12 months: a pilot study

BACKGROUND

A concentrated transdiagnostic and micro choice-based group treatment for patients with depression and anxiety has previously shown to yield significant reduction in symptoms and increased level of functioning from pre to 3-month follow-up. In the present study, we report the results after 12 months follow-up.

METHODS

This was a non-randomized clinical intervention pilot study, conducted in line with a published protocol. Sixty-seven consecutively referred patients, aged 19-47 (mean age 32.5, SD = 8.0) were included and completed treatment. All had a severity of their problems that entitled them to care in the specialist public mental health care. Self-reported age at onset of symptoms was 17.6 (SD = 7.9) years. Mean number of prior treatment courses was 3.5 (SD = 3.3; range 0-20). The main objective was to assess the treatment effectiveness by questionnaires measuring relevant symptoms at pre-treatment, 7 days-, 3 months-, 6 months- and at 12-months follow-up.

RESULTS

Validated measures of functional impairment (WSAS), depression (PHQ9), anxiety (GAD7), worry (PSWQ), fatigue (CFQ), insomnia (BIS) and illness perception (BIPQ) improved significantly (p < .0005) from before treatment to 12 months follow-up, yielding mostly large to extremely large effect sizes (0.89-3.68), whereas some moderate (0.60-0.76). After 12 months, 74% report an overall improvement in problems related to anxiety and depression. Utilization of specialist, public and private mental health care was reported as nonexistent or had decreased for 70% of the patients at 12-month follow up.

CONCLUSIONS

The concentrated, micro-choice based group treatment approach yielded a highly clinically significant reduction in a wide range of symptoms already one week after treatment, and the positive results persisted at 12-month follow-up.

Current landscape of long COVID clinical trials

Long COVID was reported as a multi-systemic condition after the infection of SARS-CoV-2, and more than 65 million people are suffering from this disease. It has been noted that around 10% of severe SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals are suffering from the enduring effects of long COVID. The symptoms of long COVID have also been noted in several mild or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals. While limited reports on clinical trials investigating new therapeutics for long COVID exist, there is an abundance of scattered information available regarding these trials. This review explores the extensive literature search, and complete clinical trial database search to map the current status of long COVID clinical trials worldwide. The study listed about 110 long COVID clinical trials. In addition to conducting extensive long COVID clinical trials, we have comprehensively presented an overview of the condition, its symptoms, notable manifestations, associated clinical trials, the unique challenges it poses, and our recommendations for addressing long COVID.

Association between indoor air pollution and depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

OBJECTIVES

Incomplete combustion of solid fuel and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) are the primary causes of indoor air pollution (IAP), potentially leading to detrimental effects on individual mental health. However, current evidence regarding the association between IAP and depression remains inconclusive. This study aims to systematically investigate the evidence regarding the association between IAP and the risk of depression.

DESIGN

Systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

DATA SOURCES

Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science and EMBASE for available studies published up to 13 January 2024.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

We included all cohort studies published in English that aimed to explore the relationship between IAP from solid fuel use and SHS exposure and the risk of depression.

DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS

Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. The association between IAP and depression was calculated using pooled relative risk (RR) with 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 value, and the effect estimates were pooled using fixed-effects or random-effects models depending on the results of homogeneity analysis.

RESULTS

We included 12 articles with data from 61 217 participants. The overall findings demonstrated a significant association between IAP exposure and depression (RR=1.22, 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.31), although with substantial heterogeneity (I2=75%). Subgroup analyses based on pollutant type revealed that IAP from solid fuel use was associated with a higher risk of depression (RR=1.20, 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.26; I2=62%; 5 studies, 36 768 participants) than that from SHS exposure (RR=1.11, 95% CI: 0.87 to 1.41; I2=80%; 7 studies, 24 449 participants). In terms of fuel use, the use of solid fuel for cooking (RR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.31; I2=58%; 4 studies, 34 044 participants) and heating (RR 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04 to 1.27; I2=65%; 3 studies, 24 874 participants) was associated with increased depression risk.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings from this systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies indicated an association between exposure to IAP and depression.

Comparison of Dutch healthy eating and healthy eating indexes and anthropometry in patients with major depression with health subjects: a case-control study

Background

Diseases and disorders related to mental health are spreading like other chronic diseases all around the world. Considering the role of food in the prevention and treatment of these disorders, including major depression, investigating the relationship between different food patterns and this disorder is of particular importance. The aim of this study was to compare Dutch healthy eating and healthy eating indexes and anthropometry in patients with major depression with healthy individuals.

Methods

In this case-control study, the final analysis was performed on 67 men and 111 women with an age range of 20-30 years. Height (cm), weight (kg), food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), physical activity (MET-min/week), demographic and PHQ-9 questionnaires were taken from all participants. In the following, all the food ingredients and their components were extracted and used to calculate HEI-2015 and DHD. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software with independent t-test, logistic regression and chi-square.

Results

It was found that people with major depression in this study were mostly women and occupied. The average HEI-2015 in healthy people and those with major depression was 58 and 54.3, respectively. Also, the average DHD in these people was 60.5 and 55, respectively. HEI-2015 and DHD had a significant negative correlation with depression score (r = -0.16, p-value = 0.03) (r = -0.19, p-value = 0.01). Also, in the logistic regression model, before and even after adjusting confounders, HEI-2015 and DHD had a reduced odds ratio in people suffering from major depression. The two groups did not differ significantly in terms of the average factors of height, weight and body mass index (BMI).

Conclusion

It seems that HEI2015 and DHD have a significant relationship in reducing major depression. However, due to the small number of studies in this regard, especially in the field of DHD, the need for more studies seems necessary.

Co-Occurrence of Apathy and Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson Disease: Variation across Multiple Measures

OBJECTIVE

To determine if the co-occurrence of apathy and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson disease is dependent on instrument selection and assess the concurrent validity of three motivation measures by examining interrelationships between them.

METHOD

Ninety-seven cognitively normal individuals with idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD) completed the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson Disease-Rating Scale (QUIP-RS) and three apathy measures: the Apathy Scale, Lille Apathy Rating Scale, and Item 4 of the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale.

RESULTS

Fifty (51.5%) participants were classified as apathetic on at least one measure, and only four individuals (4.3%) obtained clinically elevated scores on all three measures. The co-occurrence of apathy and ICD varied across measures.

CONCLUSIONS

We observed a co-occurrence of apathy and ICDs in PD patients with each apathy instrument; however, limited concurrent validity exists across measures. This is important for future investigations into shared pathophysiology and the design of future clinical trials aimed at improving the early detection and treatment of these debilitating syndromes.

Prolonged grief disorder in an inpatient psychiatric sample: psychometric properties of a new clinical interview and preliminary prevalence

BACKGROUND

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was newly included in the ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. It is not yet part of the standard assessments in many healthcare systems, including psychiatric wards. Because disordered grief is associated with suicidality, sleep problems and substance use disorders, an investigation into PGD in psychiatric inpatients is warranted.

METHOD

We interviewed N = 101 psychiatric inpatients who were admitted to the open psychiatric wards and the day hospital of a German psychiatric hospital and who had lost a person close to them. Assessments comprised clinical interviews and self-report instruments covering PGD and other mental disorders. We specifically developed the International Interview for Prolonged Grief Disorder according to ICD-11 (I-PGD-11) for the study and examined its psychometric properties.

RESULTS

The prevalence rate of PGD among bereaved patients according to ICD-11 was 16.83% and according to DSM-5-TR 10.89%. The I-PGD-11 showed good psychometric properties (Mc Donald's ω = 0.89, ICC = 0.985). Being female, having lost a child or spouse, and unnatural or surprising circumstances of the death were associated with higher PGD scores.

TRIAL REGISTRATION

Approval was obtained by the ethics committee of the of the Goethe University Frankfurt (2021-62, 2023-17) and the Chamber of Hessian Physicians (2021-2730-evBO). The study was preregistered ( https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/K98MF ).

LIMITATIONS

We only assessed inpatients of one psychiatric clinic in Germany, limiting the generalizability of our findings.

CONCLUSION

The present study underlines the importance of exploring loss and grief in psychiatric inpatients and including PGD in the assessments. Given that a significant minority of psychiatric inpatients has prolonged grief symptoms, more research into inpatient treatment programs is needed.

The interplay between polygenic score for tumor necrosis factor-α, brain structural connectivity, and processing speed in major depression

Reduced processing speed is a core deficit in major depressive disorder (MDD) and has been linked to altered structural brain network connectivity. Ample evidence highlights the involvement of genetic-immunological processes in MDD and specific depressive symptoms. Here, we extended these findings by examining associations between polygenic scores for tumor necrosis factor-α blood levels (TNF-α PGS), structural brain connectivity, and processing speed in a large sample of MDD patients. Processing speed performance of n = 284 acutely depressed, n = 177 partially and n = 198 fully remitted patients, and n = 743 healthy controls (HC) was estimated based on five neuropsychological tests. Network-based statistic was used to identify a brain network associated with processing speed. We employed general linear models to examine the association between TNF-α PGS and processing speed. We investigated whether network connectivity mediates the association between TNF-α PGS and processing speed. We identified a structural network positively associated with processing speed in the whole sample. We observed a significant negative association between TNF-α PGS and processing speed in acutely depressed patients, whereas no association was found in remitted patients and HC. The mediation analysis revealed that brain connectivity partially mediated the association between TNF-α PGS and processing speed in acute MDD. The present study provides evidence that TNF-α PGS is associated with decreased processing speed exclusively in patients with acute depression. This association was partially mediated by structural brain connectivity. Using multimodal data, the current findings advance our understanding of cognitive dysfunction in MDD and highlight the involvement of genetic-immunological processes in its pathomechanisms.

Mitigating effect of ferulic acid on di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-induced neurocognitive dysfunction in male rats with a comprehensive in silico survey

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most abundant phthalate threatening public health-induced neurotoxicity. This neurotoxicity is associated with behavioral and biochemical deficits in male rats. Our study investigated the neuroprotective effect of ferulic acid (FA) on male rats exposed to DEHP. Thirty-two male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups. Group I control rats received corn oil, group II intoxicated rats received 300 mg/kg of DEHP, group III received 300 mg/kg of DEHP + 50 mg/kg of FA, and group IV received 50 mg/kg of FA, all agents administrated daily per os for 30 days. Anxiety-like behavior, spatial working memory, and recognition memory were assessed. Also, brain oxidative stress biomarkers, including brain malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as well as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were measured. Moreover, brain histopathology examinations associated with immunohistochemistry determination of brain caspase-3 were also evaluated. Furthermore, docking simulation was adapted to understand the inhibitory role of FA on caspase-3 and NO synthase. Compared to DEHP-intoxicated rats, FA-treated rats displayed improved cognitive memory associated with a reduced anxious state. Also, the redox state was maintained with increased BNDF levels. These changes were confirmed by restoring the normal architecture of brain tissue and a decrement in the immunohistochemistry caspase-3. In conclusion, FA has potent antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties that confirm the neuroprotective activity of FA, with a possible prospect for its therapeutic capabilities and nutritional supplement value.

Assessing the Effects of Metabolic Disruption, Body Mass Index and Inflammation on Depressive Symptoms in Post-COVID-19 Condition: A Randomized Controlled Trial on Vortioxetine

INTRODUCTION

To date, there are no therapeutics that have gained regulatory approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), a debilitating condition characterized by cognitive impairment and mood symptoms. Additionally, persistent inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and risks associated with an elevated body mass index (BMI) have been observed. Herein, we aimed to assess the efficacy of vortioxetine in improving depressive symptoms among individuals with PCC,  as modulated by inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and BMI.

METHODS

In this post-hoc analysis, we present preliminary data obtained from an 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants included  adults aged 18 years and older residing in Canada who were experiencing symptoms of World Health Organization (WHO)-defined PCC. Recruitment began November 2021 and ended January 2023. Of the 200 participants enrolled, 147 were randomized (1:1) to receive vortioxetine (5-20 mg, n = 73) or placebo (n = 74) for daily treatment under double-blind conditions. The primary outcome measure was the change from baseline to endpoint in the 16-Item Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report Questionnaire (QIDS-SR-16).

RESULTS

Our findings revealed significant effects for time (χ2 = 9.601, p = 0.002), treatment (χ2 = 9.135, p = 0.003), and the treatment × time × CRP × TG-HDL × BMI interaction (χ2 = 26.092, p < 0.001) on PCC-related depressive symptoms in the adjusted model. Moreover, the between-group analysis showed a significant improvement with vortioxetine at endpoint as compared to placebo (mean difference = - 5.41, SEM = 1.335, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Overall, vortioxetine significantly improved depressive symptoms among participants with PCC in the adjusted model. Notably, individuals with baseline markers of increased inflammation, metabolic disruption, and elevated BMI exhibited a more pronounced antidepressant effect at endpoint.

The Economics of Treatment for Depression

The global prevalence of depression has risen over the past three decades across all socioeconomic groups and geographic regions, with a particularly rapid increase in prevalence among adolescents (aged 12-17 years) in the United States. Depression imposes large health, economic, and societal costs, including reduced life span and quality of life, medical costs, and reduced educational attainment and workplace productivity. A wide range of treatment modalities for depression are available, but socioeconomic disparities in treatment access are driven by treatment costs, lack of culturally tailored options, stigma, and provider shortages, among other barriers. This review highlights the need for comparative research to better understand treatments' relative efficacy, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and potential heterogeneity in efficacy across socioeconomic groups and country and cultural contexts. To address the growing burden of depression, mental health policy could consider reducing restrictions on the supply of providers, implementing digital interventions, reducing stigma, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Mental Disorders Among Mothers in Contact with the Criminal Justice System: A Scoping Review and Meta-analysis

This scoping review critically assessed evidence regarding mental disorders among mothers involved with the criminal justice system (CJS) and provided pooled prevalence rates of mental disorders. In total, 27 studies were included in the review, with 23 studies from the United States of America and 26 focused on incarcerated mothers. The findings supported the evidence on substantial burden of mental disorders, among CJS-involved mothers. Several factors contributing to mental disorders were identified, including history of abuse/incarceration/mental illness, a greater number of pregnancies, child-rearing responsibilities, less contact with children, and poor social support, which were organised using a socioecological model. However, significant gaps in the current evidence base were apparent, including inconsistencies in methodologies and outcomes assessed and a lack of large, longitudinal studies. The study highlights the importance of high-quality longitudinal research to extend knowledge around causal pathways between different risk or protective factors and mental disorders among CJS-involved mothers.

Cognitive Impairment Is Part of the Phenotype of Cerebellar Ataxia, Neuropathy, Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome (CANVAS)

BACKGROUND

Little is known about the impact of the cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) on cognition.

OBJECTIVE

Our objective was to determine the frequency and severity of cognitive impairment in RFC1-positive patients and describe the pattern of deficits.

METHODS

Participants underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Volume of the cerebellum and its lobules was measured in those who underwent a 3 Tesla-magnetic resonance scan.

RESULTS

Twenty-one patients underwent a complete assessment, including 71% scoring lower than the cutoff at the Montreal Cognitive assessment and 71% having a definite cerebellar cognitive affective/Schmahmann syndrome. Three patients had dementia and seven met the criteria of mild cognitive impairment. Severity of cognitive impairment did not correlate with severity of clinical manifestations. Performance at memory and visuospatial functions tests negatively correlated with the severity of cerebellar manifestations.

CONCLUSION

Cognitive manifestations are frequent in RFC1-related disorders. They should be included in the phenotype and screened systematically. © 2024 The Authors. Movement Disorders published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

St. John's wort extract Ze 117 alters the membrane fluidity of C6 glioma cells by influencing cellular cholesterol metabolism

Chronic stress is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). Increased glucocorticoid levels caused by uncontrolled release through the hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis can cause changes in the lipid content of the cellular plasma membrane. These changes are suspected to be involved in the development of depressive disorders. St. John's wort extract (SJW) Ze 117 has long been used as an alternative to synthetic antidepressants. Part of its effect may be due to an effect on the cellular lipid composition and thus on the properties of plasma membranes and receptor systems embedded therein. In this study, we investigated the effect of Ze 117 on that of dexamethasone and simvastatin. Dexamethasone increases the fluidity of C6 cell plasma membranes. This effect is counteracted by administration of Ze 117. Here we demonstrate that this is not due to a change in C16:1/16:0 and C18:1/18:0 ratios in C6 cell fatty acids. On the other hand, Ze 117 increased the cellular cholesterol content by 42.5%, whereas dexamethasone reduced cholesterol levels similarly to simvastatin. Lowering cholesterol levels by dexamethasone or simvastatin resulted in decreased β-arrestin 2 recruitment to the 5-HT1a receptor. This effect was counterbalanced by Ze 117, whereas the SJW extract had little effect on β-arrestin 2 recruitment in non-stressed cells. Taken together, in C6 cells, Ze 117 induces changes in membrane fluidity through its effect on cellular cholesterol metabolism rather than by affecting fatty acid saturation. This effect is reflected in an altered signal transduction of the 5-HT1a receptor under Ze 117 administration. The current in vitro results support the hypothesis that Ze 117 addresses relevant parts of the cellular lipid metabolism, possibly explaining some of the antidepressant actions of Ze 117.

Mental Disorders Among Healthcare Students Attending a Large University Hospital in Milan, Italy

BACKGROUND

The high incidence rates, treatment difficulties, and tendency to become chronic, which subsequently affects personal and occupational functioning, make mental health disorders among the most important public health concerns. In this context, healthcare university students (HS) appear to be more vulnerable to psychological distress than others.

OBJECTIVE

Investigate the prevalence of diagnosed mental illness among different groups of HS to detect students who may be psychologically vulnerable and determine whether the implementation of support interventions is necessary.

METHODS

All HS who had a clinical examination performed by an occupational physician at our occupational health unit between 2021 and 2022 were included in our case series. Data were collected and analyzed as part of the occupational physicians' health surveillance program.

RESULTS

out of 679 HS (507 females, 172 males, aged 22.2±3.9 mean±s.d) undergone clinical examination at our Occupational Health Unit, 36 (5.3%) reported a diagnosed psychiatric illness, and 20 were receiving pharmacological therapy at the time of the visit. A higher prevalence of psychological disorders has been highlighted in females (6.1% vs 2.9% in males) and students of the mental health sector (11.1%) when compared with others. A fit-to-work judgment with prescription was necessary for 16.7% of students with mental diseases. The presence of psychiatric disorders was associated with underweight (27.8%) and higher smoking habit (44.4%).

CONCLUSIONS

These results underline the necessity of improving the current health surveillance protocols, which should also evaluate students' psychological fragility and implement effective intervention strategies to promote their health and wellbeing.

P2X7 receptor: a potential target for treating comorbid anxiety and depression

In clinical practice, depression and anxiety frequently coexist, and they are both comorbid with somatic diseases. The P2X7R is an adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-gated non-selective cation channel that is widely expressed in immune-related cells. Under conditions of stress, chronic pain, and comorbid chronic physical illness, P2X7R activation in glial cells leads to neuroinflammation. This could contribute to the development of anxiety and depression-related emotional disturbances. Previous studies have shown that the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of both anxiety and depression. Thus, the P2X7R may play a role in the comorbidity of anxiety and depression. Positron emission tomography can be used to assess the degree and location of neuroinflammation by monitoring functional and expression-related changes in P2X7R, which can facilitate clinical diagnoses and guide the treatment of patients with anxiety and depression. Moreover, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the P2X7R gene are associated with susceptibility to different types of psychiatric disorders. Thus, evaluating the SNPs of the P2X7R gene could enable personalized mood disorder diagnoses and treatments. If the P2X7R were set as a therapeutic target, selective P2X7R antagonists may modulate P2X7R function, thereby altering the balance of intra- and extra-cellular ATP. This could have therapeutic implications for treating anxiety and depression, as well as for pain management. According to in vitro and in vivo studies, the P2X7R plays an important role in anxiety and depression. In this review, we consider the potential of the P2X7R as a therapeutic target for comorbid anxiety and depression, and discuss the potential diagnostic and therapeutic value of this receptor.

Mechanisms Involved in the Link between Depression, Antidepressant Treatment, and Associated Weight Change

Major depressive disorder is a severe mood disorder associated with a marked decrease in quality of life and social functioning, accompanied by a risk of suicidal behavior. Therefore, seeking out and adhering to effective treatment is of great personal and society-wide importance. Weight changes associated with antidepressant therapy are often cited as the reason for treatment withdrawal and thus are an important topic of interest. There indeed exists a significant mechanistic overlap between depression, antidepressant treatment, and the regulation of appetite and body weight. The suggested pathomechanisms include the abnormal functioning of the homeostatic (mostly humoral) and hedonic (mostly dopaminergic) circuits of appetite regulation, as well as causing neuromorphological and neurophysiological changes underlying the development of depressive disorder. However, this issue is still extensively discussed. This review aims to summarize mechanisms linked to depression and antidepressant therapy in the context of weight change.

The impact of adverse childhood experiences on depression in middle and late life: A national longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are one of the causes of depression in middle-aged and older adults, but the combined effects of ACEs, cognitive function and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) on depression have not been fully explored.

METHODS

This study was based on data from 4 waves (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018) of data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including 10,995 middle-aged and older adults. ACEs were derived from the 2014 self-report life history module. A latent variable growth curve model was used to assess the mediating effect of cognitive function and ability to perform ADL in the relationship between ACEs and depression.

RESULTS

ACEs were significantly associated with lower initial cognitive status (β = -0.156, P < .001), worse ability to perform ADL (β = 0.051, P < .001) and higher severity of depression (β = 0.228, P < .001). The results of mediation analysis indicated that the association between ACEs and the intercept of depression was partly mediated by the initial level of cognitive function and ADL, and the association between ACEs and the slope of depression was total mediated by cognitive (intercept and slope) and ADL (intercept and slope).

CONCLUSIONS

ACEs were associated with higher severity of depression in part due to lower cognitive function and worse ability to perform ADL. Interventions that focus on reducing ACEs and improving cognitive level and ability to perform ADL may effectively reduce the incidence of depression among middle-aged and older individuals.

Multi-modal morphometric association study of subclinical depressive symptoms using voxel-based morphometry, cortical thickness, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)

BACKGROUND

Case-control studies in major depression have established numerous regional grey and white matter effects in fronto-limbic brain regions. Yet, brain structural studies of dimensional depressive psychopathology within the subclinical spectrum are still limited, in particular for multi-modal imaging approaches.

METHODS

Using voxel-based and surface-based morphometry (cortical thickness) in combination with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a large non-clinical sample (N = 300), we correlated grey and white matter structural variation with subclinical depressive symptoms assessed with Beck's Depression inventory (BDI).

RESULTS

We found a significant decrease of axial diffusivity associated with higher BDI scores in the left hippocampal part of the cingulum bundle (p < 0.05, threshold free cluster enhanced [TFCE] p-value) and some grey matter trend results e.g., a non-linear negative correlation of cortical thickness with depressive symptom load in the right pre/postcentral cortex (pFWE = 0.054, family wise error [FWE] peak level corrected) and a trend in grey matter volume decrease in women in the inferior frontal gyrus (pFWE = 0.054).

LIMITATIONS

Since all grey matter effects disappear after FWE correction, we assume more stable effects in a larger, less homogenous sample enriched by help-seeking subjects covering a wider range of subclinical psychopathology.

CONCLUSION

Our study adds correlations between single depressive symptoms and brain structure to a growing literature. Since subclinical depression is increasingly recognised to be relevant in our understanding of manifest depression, early detection and identification of potential brain correlates of minor depressive symptoms has the potential to expand and reveal possible biomarkers and early psychological treatment.

Disrupted limbic-prefrontal effective connectivity in response to fearful faces in lifetime depression

BACKGROUND

Multiple brain imaging studies of negative emotional bias in major depressive disorder (MDD) have used images of fearful facial expressions and focused on the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. The results have, however, been inconsistent, potentially due to small sample sizes (typically N<50). It remains unclear if any alterations are a characteristic of current depression or of past experience of depression, and whether there are MDD-related changes in effective connectivity between the two brain regions.

METHODS

Activations and effective connectivity between the amygdala and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in response to fearful face stimuli were studied in a large population-based sample from Generation Scotland. Participants either had no history of MDD (N=664 in activation analyses, N=474 in connectivity analyses) or had a diagnosis of MDD during their lifetime (LMDD, N=290 in activation analyses, N=214 in connectivity analyses). The within-scanner task involved implicit facial emotion processing of neutral and fearful faces.

RESULTS

Compared to controls, LMDD was associated with increased activations in left amygdala (PFWE=0.031,kE=4) and left DLPFC (PFWE=0.002,kE=33), increased mean bilateral amygdala activation (β=0.0715,P=0.0314), and increased inhibition from left amygdala to left DLPFC, all in response to fearful faces contrasted to baseline. Results did not appear to be attributable to depressive illness severity or antidepressant medication status at scan time.

LIMITATIONS

Most studied participants had past rather than current depression, average severity of ongoing depression symptoms was low, and a substantial proportion of participants were receiving medication. The study was not longitudinal and the participants were only assessed a single time.

CONCLUSIONS

LMDD is associated with hyperactivity of the amygdala and DLPFC, and with stronger amygdala to DLPFC inhibitory connectivity, all in response to fearful faces, unrelated to depression severity at scan time. These results help reduce inconsistency in past literature and suggest disruption of 'bottom-up' limbic-prefrontal effective connectivity in depression.

Insulinemic potential of lifestyle is associated with depression and anxiety in adults: A large community-based study

BACKGROUND

We aimed to investigate the association between an empirical lifestyle index for hyperinsulinemia (ELIH), empirical lifestyle index for insulin resistance (ELIR), and depression and anxiety in an adult Iranian population.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, a total of 6450 participants, aged 35-65 years were recruited as part of the MASHAD cohort study. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Depression and anxiety were screened using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). ELIH and ELIR were calculated using dietary intake, body mass index, and physical activity information. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression models were applied to determine the association between ELIH, ELIR, and depression and anxiety severity.

RESULTS

In a fully adjusted model, participants with the highest ELIH quartile had a higher odds of more severe depression and anxiety compared to those in the lowest category (OR = 1.44; 95 % CI = 1.22-1.71 and OR = 1.62; 95 % CI = 1.37-1.25, respectively). Participants with the highest ELIR had higher odds of more severe depression and anxiety compared to those in the lowest category (OR = 1.22; 95 % CI = 1.04-1.43 and OR = 1.21; 95 % CI = 1.03-1.42, respectively).

LIMITATIONS

The assessment of dietary intake and mental health by questionnaires may increases the rate of misclassification. Due to the study's cross-sectional nature, causal relationships cannot be established.

CONCLUSION

There was a significant positive association between the hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance potential of lifestyle and severity of depression and anxiety among Iranian adults.

Cannabis use and mood disorders: a systematic review

Background

Problematic cannabis use is highly prevalent among people with mood disorders. This underscores the need to understand the effects of cannabis and cannabinoids in this population, especially considering legalization of recreational cannabis use.

Objectives

We aimed to (1) systematically evaluate cross-sectional and longitudinal studies investigating the interplay between cannabis use, cannabis use disorder (CUD), and the occurrence of mood disorders and symptoms, with a focus on major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) and; (2) examine the effects of cannabis on the prognosis and treatment outcomes of MDD and BD.

Methods

Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted an extensive search for English-language studies investigating the potential impact of cannabis on the development and prognosis of mood disorders published from inception through November 2023, using EMBASE, PsycINFO, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases.

Results

Our literature search identified 3,262 studies, with 78 meeting inclusion criteria. We found that cannabis use is associated with increased depressive and manic symptoms in the general population in addition to an elevated likelihood of developing MDD and BD. Furthermore, we observed that cannabis use is linked to an unfavorable prognosis in both MDD or BD.

Discussion

Our findings suggest that cannabis use may negatively influence the development, course, and prognosis of MDD and BD. Future well-designed studies, considering type, amount, and frequency of cannabis use while addressing confounding factors, are imperative for a comprehensive understanding of this relationship.

Sub-chronic and mild social defeat stress exposure to C57BL/6J mice increases visceral fat mass and causes accumulation of cholesterol and bile acids in the liver

Major depressive disorder is accompanied by a high metabolic illness comorbidity and patients with atypical depression are a subgroup with particularly high risk of obesity, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome; however, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we examined visceral fat deposition, lipid profiles in the liver, and gut microbiota in sub-chronic and mild social defeat stress (sCSDS)-exposed C57BL/6J mice, which exhibit atypical depression-like phenotypes, i.e., increased body weight and food and water intake. We found that visceral fat mass and levels of hepatic cholesterol and bile acids in sCSDS-exposed mice were significantly increased compared to those in controls. The expression of hepatic small heterodimer partner, a negative regulator of cholesterol metabolism, was significantly elevated in sCSDS-exposed mice. We also found that gut microbial diversity and composition including lower relative abundance of Bacteroides spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. in sCSDS-exposed mice were different from those in controls. In addition, relative abundance of Bacteroides spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. was significantly and negatively correlated with body weight, visceral fat mass, and hepatic cholesterol and bile acids levels. These results indicate that sCSDS-exposure induces dysbiosis, and thereby contributes to metabolic disorder development.

Systematic analysis of combined oral contraceptive prescription patterns in psychotropic drug users across twelve European countries

OBJECTIVE

To investigate prescription patterns of combined oral contraceptives (COC) among psychotropic drug users compared to non-psychotropic drug users in routine clinical practice in Europe.

STUDY DESIGN

A pooled analysis of three large, prospective, multinational cohort studies including women with a new prescription of COC from 12 European countries. We calculated standardized mean differences (SMD) to investigate whether the status of psychotropic drug use (use/no use) or the psychotropic drug class (psycholeptics/psychoanaleptics) is associated with the healthcare professional's choice of a specific type of COC progestin.

RESULTS

Our analysis comprised 143,069 non-psychotropic drug users and 2174 psychotropic drug users. Progestins with the highest frequency in the cohorts were levonorgestrel (non-psychotropic drug users: 33.8%; psychotropic drug users: 32.4%), nomegestrol/nomegestrol acetate (non-psychotropic drug users: 19.1%; psychotropic drug users: 26.4%), and drospirenone (non-psychotropic drug users: 15.9%; psychotropic drug users: 14.8%). SMD analysis indicated no substantial differences in COC prescription patterns between the two cohorts. However, we observed association signals for users of the herbal antidepressant St. John's wort in that those individuals more often received a prescription for drospirenone and less frequently for nomegestrol/nomegestrol acetate compared to non-psychotropic drug users.

CONCLUSIONS

Psychotropic drug user status does not seem to affect healthcare professionals' decisions when prescribing COC. However, limited evidence suggests that the risk for drug interactions might differ by progestin type, and some COC might be more suitable for psychotropic drug users than others. Specific guidelines should be conveyed to healthcare professionals to assist them in contraceptive counseling.

IMPLICATIONS

With exception of St. John's wort, our analysis showed no differential prescription behavior of combined oral contraceptives in psychotropic drug users and non-users. However, healthcare professionals should carefully consider psychotropic drug use in contraceptive counseling as it is still unclear whether drug interactions exist when co-administered with certain oral contraceptives.

Fluoxetine reverses early-life stress-induced depressive-like behaviors and region-specific alterations of monoamine transporters in female mice

The sex difference that females are more vulnerable to depression than males has been recently replicated in an animal model of early-life stress (ES) called the limited bedding and nesting material (LBN) paradigm. Adopting this animal model, we have previously examined the effects of ES on monoamine transporter (MATs) expression in stress-related regions in adult female mice, and the reversal effects of a novel multimodal antidepressant, vortioxetine. In this study, replacing vortioxetine with a classical antidepressant, fluoxetine, we aimed to replicate the ES effects in adult female mice and to elucidate the commonality and differences between fluoxetine and vortioxetine. We found that systemic 30-day treatment with fluoxetine successfully reversed ES-induced depression-like behaviors (especially sucrose preference) in adult female mice. At the molecular level, we largely replicated the ES effects, such as reduced serotonin transporter (SERT) expression in the amygdala and increased norepinephrine transporter (NET) expression in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus. Similar reversal effects of fluoxetine and vortioxetine were observed, including SERT in the amygdala and NET in the mPFC, whereas different reversal effects were observed for NET in the hippocampus and vesicular monoamine transporters expression in the nucleus accumbens. Overall, these results demonstrate the validity of the LBN paradigm to induce depression-like behaviors in female mice, highlight the involvement of region-specific MATs in ES-induced depression-like behaviors, and provide insights for further investigation of neurobiological mechanisms, treatment, and prevention associated with depression in women.

Metabolic Profile and Long-Term Risk of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress-Related Disorders

Importance

Biomarkers of lipid, apolipoprotein, and carbohydrate metabolism have been previously suggested to be associated with the risk for depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders, but results are inconsistent.

Objective

To examine whether the biomarkers of carbohydrate, lipid, and apolipoprotein metabolism are associated with the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.

Design, Setting, and Participants

This population-based cohort study with longitudinal data collection assessed 211 200 participants from the Apolipoprotein-Related Mortality Risk (AMORIS) cohort who underwent occupational health screening between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 1996, mainly in the Stockholm region in Sweden. Statistical analysis was performed during 2022 to 2023.

Exposures

Lipid, apolipoprotein, and carbohydrate biomarkers measured in blood.

Main Outcomes and Measures

The associations between biomarker levels and the risk of developing depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders through the end of 2020 were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression models. In addition, nested case-control analyses were conducted within the cohort, including all incident cases of depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders, and up to 10 control individuals per case who were individually matched to the case by year of birth, sex, and year of enrollment to the AMORIS cohort, using incidence density sampling. Population trajectories were used to illustrate the temporal trends in biomarker levels for cases and controls.

Results

A total of 211 200 individuals (mean [SD] age at first biomarker measurement, 42.1 [12.6] years; 122 535 [58.0%] male; 188 895 [89.4%] born in Sweden) participated in the study. During a mean (SD) follow-up of 21.0 (6.7) years, a total of 16 256 individuals were diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or stress-related disorders. High levels of glucose (hazard ratio [HR], 1.30; 95% CI, 1.20-1.41) and triglycerides (HR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.10-1.20) were associated with an increased subsequent risk of all tested psychiatric disorders, whereas high levels of high-density lipoprotein (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.80-0.97) were associated with a reduced risk. These results were similar for male and female participants as well as for all tested disorders. The nested case-control analyses demonstrated that patients with depression, anxiety, or stress-related disorders had higher levels of glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol during the 20 years preceding diagnosis, as well as higher levels of apolipoprotein A-I and apolipoprotein B during the 10 years preceding diagnosis, compared with control participants.

Conclusions and Relevance

In this cohort study of more than 200 000 participants, high levels of glucose and triglycerides and low levels of high-density lipoprotein were associated with future risk of depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. These findings may support closer follow-up of individuals with metabolic dysregulations for the prevention and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

The effect of Vortioxetine on the NLRP3 pathway and microglial activity in the prefrontal cortex in an experimental model of depression

BACKGROUND

Increasing evidence suggests that early life stress (ELS) and neuroinflammation are associated with the pathophysiology of depression. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Vortioxetine (VOR), a novel antidepressant, on ELS-induced behavioral changes and neuroinflammation.

METHOD

Wistar Albino 4-week-old male rats were divided into four groups: control; chronic unpredictable stress (CUMS), VOR, CUMS + VOR. Neurobehavioral assessment was performed on the first, 21st, and 42nd days. RT-PCR was used to detect the expression of P2X7, NLRP3, IL1β, IL18 in the prefrontal cortex. To assess the microglial activities of the prefrontal cortex, immunohistochemically stained CD68, and leukocyte common antigen (LCA) preparations were scanned with Manual WSI software, Basler camera, and scored.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Exposure to CUMS was associated with depression and anxiety-like behaviors, and administration of VOR led to improvement in these behaviors. NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18 were shown to be upregulated in the prefrontal cortex of CUMS rats, while their high expression was inhibited by VOR treatment. CD68 and LCA expressions were significantly higher in the CUMS group compared to the other groups.

CONCLUSION

According to these results, it may be considered that NLRP3 inflammasome-associated neuroinflammatory response and microglial activation may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of ELS.

Somatic multicomorbidity and disability in patients with psychiatric disorders in comparison to the general population: a quasi-epidemiological investigation in 54,826 subjects from 40 countries (COMET-G study)

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of medical illnesses is high among patients with psychiatric disorders. The current study aimed to investigate multi-comorbidity in patients with psychiatric disorders in comparison to the general population. Secondary aims were to investigate factors associated with metabolic syndrome and treatment appropriateness of mental disorders.

METHODS

The sample included 54,826 subjects (64.73% females; 34.15% males; 1.11% nonbinary gender) from 40 countries (COMET-G study). The analysis was based on the registration of previous history that could serve as a fair approximation for the lifetime prevalence of various medical conditions.

RESULTS

About 24.5% reported a history of somatic and 26.14% of mental disorders. Mental disorders were by far the most prevalent group of medical conditions. Comorbidity of any somatic with any mental disorder was reported by 8.21%. One-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients were also suffering from a mental disorder depending on the severity and multicomorbidity. Bipolar and psychotic patients and to a lesser extent depressives, manifested an earlier (15-20 years) manifestation of somatic multicomorbidity, severe disability, and probably earlier death. The overwhelming majority of patients with mental disorders were not receiving treatment or were being treated in a way that was not recommended. Antipsychotics and antidepressants were not related to the development of metabolic syndrome.

CONCLUSIONS

The finding that one-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients also suffered from a mental disorder strongly suggests that psychiatry is the field with the most trans-specialty and interdisciplinary value and application points to the importance of teaching psychiatry and mental health in medical schools and also to the need for more technocratically oriented training of psychiatric residents.

COVID-19-Related Stressors and Psychophysical Health Conditions among Italian University Students: A Post Pandemic Insight

The COVID-19 medical emergency has ended worldwide, yet the psychological impact of these years of unprecedented changes on students' lives still needs to be deepened.

METHODS

This study aims to assess and compare COVID-19-related stressors (relationships and academic life; isolation; and fear of contagion) and psychophysical symptoms reported by 637 university students at three times, i.e., April 2020 (n = 197), April 2021 (n = 200), and April 2022 (n = 240). The impact of COVID-19-related stressors on psychophysical symptoms within each time was also tested.

RESULTS

In April 2022, perceived isolation and fear of contagion decreased from the peak registered in April 2021, but stress related to relationships and academic life remained high. An ongoing increase in psychophysical symptoms was found. More than 50% of students reported clinical levels of sleep disorders, depression, psychoticism, and interpersonal sensitivity. In April 2022, students still perceiving stress related to relationships and academic life and isolation were at risk for anxiety, somatization, and sleep disorders. Students still perceiving stress related to fear of contagion were also at risk for depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychoticism.

CONCLUSION

The findings emphasized the long-lasting effects of COVID-19-related stress on students' psychophysical health. Interventions must aim at supporting students in dealing with the complex post-pandemic adjustment process.

Predictive factors of psychiatric syndrome in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Introduction

Early detection of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) remains a challenge in clinical settings. Previous studies have found different autoantibodies as markers for NPSLE. This study aimed to describe the distribution of psychiatric syndromes in a group of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to investigate the association between psychiatric syndromes and specific autoantibodies.

Methods

This retrospective study was conducted at a single medical center in China. We reviewed medical records of hospitalized patients with SLE who were consulted by psychiatrists due to potential mental disorders. Results of serum autoantibodies and general laboratory tests were collected. The correlation between clinical variables was examined. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors related to NPSLE and different psychiatric diagnoses.

Results

Among the 171 psychiatric manifestations in 160 patients, 141 (82.4%) were attributed to SLE. Acute confusional state (ACS) had the highest prevalence (57.4%). Anti-cardiolipin (ACL) antibody (X2 = 142.261, p < 0.001) and anti-β2 glycoprotein I (-β2GP1) antibody (X2 = 139.818, p < 0.001) varied significantly between groups, with the highest positive rate found in patients with mood disorders (27.3% and 18.2%). SLE disease activity index - 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score excluding item ACS and item psychosis was a predictor of NPSLE (OR 1.172 [95% CI 1.105 - 1.243]).

Conclusions

Disease activity reflected by SLEDAI-2K score is a predictor for NPSLE. Antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with mood disorders in SLE. Further separate investigation of neuropsychiatric disorders is needed in order to better comprehend NPSLE's pathological mechanism.

Intracortical Myelin in Youths at Risk for Depression

Background

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability. To understand why depression develops, it is important to distinguish between early neural markers of vulnerability that precede the onset of MDD and features that develop during depression. Recent neuroimaging findings suggest that reduced global and regional intracortical myelination (ICM), especially in the lateral prefrontal cortex, may be associated with depression, but it is unknown whether it is a precursor or a consequence of MDD. The study of offspring of affected parents offers the opportunity to distinguish between precursors and consequences by examining individuals who carry high risk at a time when they have not experienced depression.

Methods

We acquired 129 T1-weighted and T2-weighted scans from 56 (25 female) unaffected offspring of parents with depression and 114 scans from 63 (34 female) unaffected offspring of parents without a history of depression (ages 9 to 16 years). To assess scan quality, we calculated test-retest reliability. We used the scan ratios to calculate myelin maps for 68 cortical regions. We analyzed data using mixed-effects modeling.

Results

ICM did not differ between high and low familial risk youths in global (B = 0.06, SE = 0.03, p = .06) or regional (B = 0.05, SE = 0.03, p = .08) analyses. Our pediatric sample had high ICM reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.55-0.88).

Conclusions

Based on our results, reduced ICM does not appear to be a precursor of MDD. Future studies should examine ICM in familial high-risk youths across a broad developmental period.

Implications of Inflammatory Processes on a Developing Central Nervous System in Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that is increasingly affecting pediatric and adult populations. Neuropsychiatric manifestations (ie, cognitive dysfunction and mood disorders) appear to occur with greater severity and poorer prognosis in childhood-onset SLE (cSLE) versus adult-onset SLE, negatively impacting school function, self-management, and psychosocial health, as well as lifelong health-related quality of life. In this review, we describe pathogenic mechanisms active in cSLE, such as maladaptive inflammatory processes and ischemia, which are hypothesized to underpin central phenotypes in patients with cSLE, and the role of alterations in protective central nervous system (CNS) barriers (ie, the blood-brain barrier) are also discussed. Recent findings derived from novel neuroimaging approaches are highlighted because the methods employed in these studies hold potential for identifying CNS abnormalities that would otherwise remain undetected with conventional multiple resonance imaging studies (eg, T2-weighted or fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences). Furthermore, we propose that a more robust presentation of neuropsychiatric symptoms in cSLE is in part due to the harmful impact of a chronic inflammatory insult on a developing CNS. Although the immature status of the CNS may leave patients with cSLE more vulnerable to harboring neuropsychiatric manifestations, the same property may represent a greater urgency to reverse the maladaptive effects associated with a proneuroinflammatory state, provided that effective diagnostic tools and treatment strategies are available. Finally, considering the crosstalk among the CNS and other organ systems affected in cSLE, we postulate that a finer understanding of this interconnectivity and its role in the clinical presentation in cSLE is warranted.

Correlation between the changes of brain amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and cognitive impairment in patients with neuropsychiatric lupus

PURPOSE

To explore the relationship between brain function changes and clinical serological indicators and behavioral cognitive assessment in patients with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE), and understand the pathogenesis of NPSLE from the perspective of imaging.

METHODS

The resting-state functional imaging data, clinical serological, and behavioral cognitive assessment scores of 28 patients with NPSLE and 22 healthy controls (HC) were prospectively collected. The resting-state amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) values obtained from the analysis and processing were correlated with the serological data and behavioral cognitive assessment scores to determine the relationship between these data.

RESULTS

The average age of the patients of the NPSLE group was older than that of the HC group; significant differences in education level, Auditory Verbal Learning Test Hua Shan Version (AVLT-H), and Trail Making Test scores were observed between the two groups. The NPSLE group demonstrated increased brain activity in the insula, precentral gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus, and decreased brain activity in the superior parietal gyrus. The ALFF value of the insula positively correlated with the Anti-β2gp1 antibody and negatively correlated with the anti-nucleosome antibody and the AVL-recall (RC) score. The ALFF of the precentral gyrus negatively correlated with the AVL-immediate recall (I). The ALFF value of the superior temporal gyrus negatively correlated with the AVL-RC score. The left superior parietal gyrus positively correlated with the c-reactive protein. The right superior parietal gyrus positively correlated with the System Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index and negatively correlated with the AVL-I score.

CONCLUSION

Patients with NPSLE show different brain activity changes in different brain regions, and the abnormal brain regions are correlated with certain lupus antibodies, inflammatory factors, and cognitive assessment, thereby suggesting that the correlation between the three could provide novel insights into the pathogenesis of NPSLE.

The clinical features and potential mechanisms of cognitive disorders in peripheral autoimmune and inflammatory diseases

According to a study from World Health Organization's Global Burden of Disease, mental and neurological disorders have accounted for 13% of global diseases in recent years and are on the rise. Neuropsychiatric conditions or neuroinflammatory disorders are linked by the presence of an exaggerated immune response both peripherally and in the central nervous system (CNS). Cognitive dysfunction (CD) encompasses a complex group of diseases and has frequently been described in the field of autoimmune diseases, especially in multiple non-CNS-related autoimmune diseases. Recent studies have provided various hypotheses regarding the occurrence of cognitive impairment in autoimmune diseases, including that abnormally activated immune cells can disrupt the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to trigger a central neuroinflammatory response. When the BBB is intact, autoantibodies and pro-inflammatory molecules in peripheral circulation can enter the brain to activate microglia, inducing CNS inflammation and CD. However, the mechanisms explaining the association between the immune system and neural function and their contribution to diseases are uncertain. In this review, we used clinical statistics to illustrate the correlation between CD and autoimmune diseases that do not directly affect the CNS, summarized the clinical features and mechanisms by which autoimmune diseases trigger cognitive impairment, and explored existing knowledge regarding the link between CD and autoimmune diseases from the perspective of the field of neuroimmunology.

Association between Work-related Communication Devices Use during Work Outside of Regular Working Hours and Depressive Symptoms in Wage Workers

Background

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between work-related communication devices use during work outside of regular working hours and depressive symptoms in wage workers.

Methods

Data from 50,538 workers aged 15 years or older who had participated in the 6th Korean Working Condition Survey (KWCS) were used. The final sample was 32,994 wage workers. The questionnaire asked the respondents how often they used communication devices for work during work outside of regular working hours. Depressive symptoms were assessed using WHO-5 Well-Being Index. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between work-related communication devices use during work outside of regular working hours and depressive symptoms.

Results

The rate of depressive symptoms was highest among workers who did not use work-related communication devices during work outside of regular working hours. After adjusting for socio-demographic and work-related factors, the odds ratio of depressive symptoms among workers who used communication devices when working outside of regular working hours was 1.20 (95% CI: 1.09-1.32); the odds ratio of depressive symptoms in the group not using communication devices for free-time work was 1.66 (95% CI: 1.37-2.00), which was higher than that of the reference group, that is, workers who did not work outside of regular working hours, and was statistically significant.

Conclusion

Regardless of whether work-related communication devices are used, working outside of regular working hours increases depressive symptoms. The use of work-related communication devices during work outside of regular working hours can reduce the rate of depressive symptoms.

A Systematic Review of the Psychometric Properties of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 in Clinical and Nonclinical Populations

BACKGROUND

The Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) is an ultra-brief instrument that measures depressive and anxiety symptoms. Although it has been frequently used in the last 15 years, no research has systematically reviewed its psychometric properties.

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review summarized, for the first time, the available published evidence on the psychometric properties of the PHQ-4.

METHODS

This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews, under the identification code CRD42022381809. The search strategy was applied in Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and SCOPUS from 2009 (year of publication) to 2023 (present). Two independent reviewers performed screening, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment of the studies. The data was reported through a narrative synthesis.

RESULTS

In total, 26 studies involving 93,466 participants from 19 countries, with clinical and nonclinical samples, were included. The two-factor structure was the most frequent, being invariant according to gender, age, geographic location, income, educational level, and language. The internal consistency was adequate for distress (α from 0.72 to 0.88), as well as for depression (α from 0.65 to 0.81) and anxiety (α from 0.74 to 0.84). The temporal stability of the instrument was verified through test-retest reliability, reporting an acceptable connection between both measures. Correlations with related measures were significant and in the expected direction.

CONCLUSIONS

The PHQ-4 is a reliable and valid instrument for screening depressive and anxiety symptoms, both for the clinical and nonclinical populations. Due to the brevity of its administration, the PHQ-4 could be a clinical tool that contributes to optimizing health resources.

Perceived Epidemic Impacts and Mental Symptom Trajectories in Adolescents Back to School After COVID-19 Restriction: A Longitudinal Latent Class Analysis

PURPOSE

This study aimed to assess the impacts of COVID-19 epidemic on various life aspects and identify the trajectories of common mental symptoms among adolescents back to school after COVID-19 restriction. Furthermore, potential predictors associated with those trajectories were investigated.

METHODS

This longitudinal study, with five data collection points and a total follow-up of 68.4 days, was conducted among 1,393 junior high school students (mean age: 13.8 years; male, 53.3%) shortly after school reopened during the first COVID-19 outbreak in China. Questions on sociodemographics and perceived COVID-19 epidemic impacts were completed at the baseline while the Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and Insomnia Severity Index were measured throughout the study for depression, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms, respectively. Trajectories of mental symptoms were classified by longitudinal latent class analysis, and the associated predictive factors were identified with multinomial regression modelling.

RESULTS

Our study revealed high but steadily declining prevalence of depression, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms (p trend < .001). Five distinctive trajectories were identified for both depression and anxiety ("resistance," "low symptom," "recovery," "chronic dysfunction," and "delayed dysfunction") and three for insomnia ("resistance," "low symptom," and "chronic dysfunction"). Besides the significant association between the mental symptom trajectories and students' perceived COVID-19 impacts on study practice, family income, and family relationship, female gender, lower school grade, and higher body mass index were found to be predictive of high severity trajectories.

DISCUSSION

Our findings may help locate the most psychologically vulnerable adolescents during the epidemic and foster better implementation of targeted intervention.

The association between urbanization and adolescent depression in China

Background

With the rapid urbanization in many countries, more attention is being paid to the relationship between urbanization and mental health, especially depression. However, in countries with rapid urbanization, few empirical studies exist on the relationship between urbanization and adolescent depression.

Methods

Nationally representative survey data from the China Family Panel Studies in 2012, 2016 and 2018 were used. Data of 1,588 adolescents were obtained from 25 provinces. Depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiology Studies of Depression 20-item score. The urbanization rate was obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The generalized estimating equation was used to estimate the statistical relationship.

Results

The participants' mean age at baseline was 15 years, and 51.2% (813/1,588) of participants were male. After adjusting for all covariates (gender, age, ethnicity, level of education, marital status, urban/rural areas, body mass index, self-rated health, academic pressure, smoking, drinking and exercise), the rate of urbanization was monotonically and negatively associated with adolescent depression (odds ratio 0.34, 95% CI [0.14-0.79]). Compared with female adolescents, male adolescents had a lower risk of depression (odds ratio 0.80, 95% CI [0.67-0.97]).

Conclusion

In the context of China, urbanization has a positive effect on the mental health of adolescents. Female adolescents are more likely to experience depression than male adolescents.

Estimating the Sex Gap in Depression-Free Life Expectancy Among Widowed Americans Aged 50 and Older: An Application Using the Interpolated Markov Chain Approach

OBJECTIVES

Using Interpolated Markov Chain software, we compare the length of life with and without depression among married individuals and widowers, and the related sex differences.

METHODS

We applied a multi-state life table approach to estimate depression-free life expectancy among recent cohorts of older married and widowed women and men in the United States, using data from the Health and Retirement Study over a 7-year period (2012-2018).

RESULTS

The study revealed that the difference in life expectancy between sexes widens in the context of widowhood. At age 50, the sex gap in depression-free life expectancy is 0.8 years among married people, whereas the gap almost doubles to 1.7 years among widowed people.

DISCUSSION

By quantifying disparities in the duration of life affected by depression between married and widowed women and men, policymakers could properly allocate resources specifically to address the mental health needs of these groups.
