Abstract
Molecular ferroelectrics have displayed a promising future since they are light-weight, flexible, environmentally friendly and easily synthesized, compared to traditional inorganic ferroelectrics. However, how to precisely design a molecular ferroelectric from a non-ferroelectric phase transition molecular system is still a great challenge. Here we designed and constructed a molecular ferroelectric by double regulation of the anion and cation in a simple crown ether clathrate, 4, [K(18-crown-6)]+ [PF6 ]- . By replacing K+ and PF6 - with H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- respectively, we obtained a new molecular ferroelectric [H3 O(18-crown-6)]+ [FeCl4 ]- , 1. Compound 1 undergoes a para-ferroelectric phase transition near 350 K with symmetry change from P21/n to the Pmc21 space group. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis suggests that the phase transition was mainly triggered by the displacement motion of H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- ions and twist motion of 18-crown-6 molecule. Strikingly, compound 1 shows high a Curie temperature (350 K), ultra-strong second harmonic generation signals (nearly 8 times of KDP), remarkable dielectric switching effect and large spontaneous polarization. We believe that this research will pave the way to design and build high-quality molecular ferroelectrics as well as their application in smart materials.

Abstract
An insight into the analogies, state-of-the-art technologies, concepts, and prospects under the umbrella of perovskite materials (both inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskites and ferroelectric perovskites) for future multifunctional energy conversion and storage devices is provided. Often, these are considered entirely different branches of research; however, considering them simultaneously and holistically can provide several new opportunities. Recent advancements have highlighted the potential of hybrid perovskites for high-efficiency solar cells. The intrinsic polar properties of these materials, including the potential for ferroelectricity, provide additional possibilities for simultaneously exploiting several energy conversion mechanisms such as the piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and thermoelectric effect and electrical energy storage. The presence of these phenomena can support the performance of perovskite solar cells. The energy conversion using these effects (piezo-, pyro-, and thermoelectric effect) can also be enhanced by a change in the light intensity. Thus, there lies a range of possibilities for tuning the structural, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of perovskites to simultaneously harvest energy using more than one mechanism to realize an improved efficiency. This requires a basic understanding of concepts, mechanisms, corresponding material properties, and the underlying physics involved with these effects.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic lead halide hybrids have attracted extensive interest in solid-state lighting, due to their superior color tunability and low-cost solution processing. However, the relatively low photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) is a common issue for most bulk lead halide hybrids. Inspired by the intriguing luminescence properties of heterometallic complexes, we rationally developed an unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) Pb-Mn heterometallic halide hybrid, (C5H14N2)2Pb4MnCl14 (2), through a precisely tailored synthetic approach based on (C5H14N2)2Pb5Cl14 (1). Intriguingly, 2 features a unique 2D heterometallic halide layer configuration, in which the strong quantum confinement facilitates efficient energy transfer from bound excitons to d-states of Mn2+, resulting in highly sensitized Mn2+emission. The PLQE of 2 is up to 32%, considerably higher than that of pristine 1 (less than 1%). Moreover, 2 presents significant environmental and thermal stability, benefiting from its cluster feature. To our best knowledge, this is the first example of construction of a Pb-Mn heterometallic halide hybrid with bulk highly efficient red emission. This work provides a way to enhance the PLQE of lead halide hybrids via sensitization in rationally designed heterometallic halide hybrids.

Abstract
Pb2+ halide organic-inorganic perovskites are excellent semiconductors for use in solar energy applications, but at the expense of robustness and environmental compatibility. Tin (Sn), which sits just above lead in the periodic table, forms pure (or mixed with lead) perovskites when at the 2+ or 4+ oxidation state. It can act as a promising alternative; however, there are still some serious concerns regarding its suitability. This presents a major challenge; viable metal cations have to be identified. A good number of elements, originating from a large range of d-block metal ions, with adequate oxidation states, moderate toxicity, and relative abundance, seem ideal for this purpose. In this review, we present the most characteristic perovskites (conventional perovskites, layered, or double perovskites) that can be formed with the help of these metals. We focus on d-block metal ions with stable oxidation states, such as Ag+ or Ti4+, which have exhibited satisfactory photovoltaic properties until now. Further, we highlight the results involving compounds other than halide perovskites, such as oxides, chalcogenides, and nitrides (as well as oxyhalides, oxysulfides, and oxynitrides); a few of them are ferroelectric (based on Ti4+, Zr4+, Fe3+, and Cr3+) and can yield a photovoltage that exceeds the bandgap of the material. Finally, we present the critical challenges that currently limit the efficiency of these systems and propose prospects for future directions.

Abstract
The X-site ion in organic-inorganic hybrid ABX3 perovskites (OHPs) varies from halide ion to bridging linkers like HCOO- , N3 - , NO2 - , and CN- . However, no nitrite-based OHP ferroelectrics have been reported so far. Now, based on non-ferroelectric [(CH3 )4 N][Ni(NO2 )3 ], through the combined methodologies of quasi-spherical shape, hydrogen bonding functionality, and H/F substitution, we have successfully synthesized an OHP ferroelectric, [FMeTP][Ni(NO2 )3 ] (FMeTP=N-fluoromethyl tropine). As an unprecedented nitrite-based OHP ferroelectric, the well-designed [FMeTP][Ni(NO2 )3 ] undergoes the ferroelectric phase transition at 400 K with an Aizu notation of 6/mmmFm, showing multiaxial ferroelectric characteristics. This work is a great step towards not only enriching the molecular ferroelectric families but also accelerating the potential practical applications.

Abstract
The [Mn2Cl9]5- mode of red emissive (C4NOH10)5Mn2Cl9·C2H5OH under thermal treatment will be cleaved into [MnCl4]2- in the green emissive (C4NOH10)2MnCl4 with the departure of ethanol. The rapid conversion of luminescence from red to green provides new insight into the luminescence origin and thermal stability of organic-inorganic metal halide hybrids.

Abstract
[C6N2H18][SbI5] (1), a novel metal halide semiconductor with dielectric relaxation behavior, has been successfully synthesized, in which the cavities between the one-dimensional [SbI5] n2- polyanions are occupied by 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediammonium (2-MPDA) cations. 1 undergoes a reversible solid-state phase transition at TC = 192.7 K and shows a step-like dielectric anomaly. Interestingly, above TC, distinct dielectric dispersion in a wide temperature range is also witnessed. Remarkably, the solid state UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of 1 exhibits a slightly gentler absorption edge at about 650 nm; that is, 1 adopts an indirect band gap with 1.92 electron volts. The combined narrow band gap, strong photoconductivity effect, and excellent dielectric relaxation might shed light on the exploitation of lead-free hybrid metal halide molecular materials with promising application prospects in thermoresponsive relaxation-type dielectric materials and photovoltaic conversion devices.

Abstract
A new lead-bromide hybrid organic-inorganic complex [Et4N]2[PbBr3]2 (Et = ethyl) was synthesized, and its crystal structures could be described as a distorted perovskite-like one (at room temperature phase and at high temperature phase) and a step-like dielectric anomaly was obtained at around 375 K upon heating and 367 K upon cooling. It underwent a reversible structural phase transition with the Aizu notation of 6/mmmF2/m belonging to one of the 94 species of ferroelastic phase transitions, displayed switchable dielectric behaviors triggered by the motion or reorientation of the tetraethylammonium cations and the displacement of Pb2+ and Br- ions in a solid-state crystal. Ferroelastic domain walls were also observed in atomic-force microscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric measurements and variable-temperature X-ray structure determinations indicated this complex exhibited a dielectric anomaly associated with the structural phase transition. All of these demonstrate its potential application as a temperature switchable molecular dielectric material in the ferroic-related field.

Abstract
With regard to the artificial molecular motor that was recognized with the 2016 Nobel Prize, this success proves the great scientific significance of rotary motor-type motion at the molecular level, which has been expected to play an invaluable role in the development of electronic information molecular materials. However, designing electronic information-critical high-temperature molecular motors has always been a huge challenge. Since we discovered [(CH3)3NCH2Cl]MnCl3, this cation rotation pattern with a motor-type motion structure has continued to attract our attention. Considering a strategy that combines molecular machines with dielectric theory, ( N, N-dimethylpiperidinium)CdCl3, the new dielectric molecular motor material that exhibits superior physical properties, could be considered to be an excellent dielectric switch based on its electric field and temperature. Crystal structure analyses reveal that the reversible phase transition is mainly induced by the unusual chair-to-rotator motion of cations. Because of the unprecedented leaping structural transition from P63/ mmc to P21/ c and the rotating motor-type motion structure, the material exhibits remarkable anisotropy and outstanding dielectric switching characteristics. These findings open a new avenue for the design and assembly of novel molecular motor materials in the field of electronic information.

Abstract
Piezoelectric materials produce electricity when strained, making them ideal for different types of sensing applications. The most effective piezoelectric materials are ceramic solid solutions in which the piezoelectric effect is optimized at what are termed morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs). Ceramics are not ideal for a variety of applications owing to some of their mechanical properties. We synthesized piezoelectric materials from a molecular perovskite (TMFM)x(TMCM)1–xCdCl3 solid solution (TMFM, trimethylfluoromethyl ammonium; TMCM, trimethylchloromethyl ammonium, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1), in which the MPB exists between monoclinic and hexagonal phases. We found a composition for which the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is ~1540 picocoulombs per newton, comparable to high-performance piezoelectric ceramics. The material has potential applications for wearable piezoelectric devices.

Abstract
A cyclen-based hybrid supermolecule crystal, [(FeCl2 )(cyclen)]Cl (1), where cyclen=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane, was prepared using a liquid-liquid diffusion approach. The variable crystal structures exhibit that compound 1 belongs to an orthorhombic crystal system, Pna21 space group (point group C2V ) in the temperature range of 150-400 K. This hybrid supermolecule shows a dielectric relaxation behavior around room temperature, and the ferroelectric nature of 1 has been directly verified by hysteresis measurements. In addition, the AC (alternating current) conductivity study reveals that the 1 displays a beyond limiting behavior. These interesting findings are for the first time reported in the field of supermolecular ferroelectrics. This study may open a new way to construct supermolecular ferroelectrics and give insights into their conductor behavior.

Abstract
Thin films of [(FeIIxCrII1−x)]1.5[CrIII(CN)6]·yH2O (x ≈ 0.30–0.35, y ≈ 1.77) (1) on FTO substrates (namely film 1) were synthesized with an electrochemical method. Investigation of the ferroelectricity of film 1 at different temperatures reveals that it exhibits ferroelectric behaviour in the temperature range from 10 K to 310 K. Study of the X-ray absorption (XAS) of the crushed film 1 and simulation of the structure of film 1 and crushed film 1 by using the Materials Studio software indicate that the vacancy defects and interactions between the film and FTO substrate make a key contribution to the ferroelectricity of film 1. Owing to the magnetic phase transition point being up to 210 K, film 1 is a multiferroic material and its magneto/electric coexistence temperature can be as high as 210 K. Prussian blue analogue film exhibits ferroelectric from 10 to 310 K and works up to 210 K as a molecular-based multiferroic material.![]()

Abstract
The molecular radicals, systems with unpaired electrons of open-shell electronic structures, set the stage for a multidisciplinary science frontier relevant to the cooperative magnetic exchange interaction and magnetoelectric effect. Here ferroelectricity together with magnetic spin exchange coupling in molecular radical hydrocarbon solids is reported, representing a new class of magnetoelectrics. Electronic correlation through radical-radical interactions plays a decisive role in the coupling between magnetic and charge orders. A substantial photoconductance and visible-light photovoltaic effect are found in radical hydrocarbons. The ability to simultaneously control and retrieve the changes in magnetic and electrical responses opens up a new breadth of applications, such as radical magnetoelectrics, magnets, and optoelectronics.

Abstract
The different hydrogen bond interactions in two organic-inorganic hybrid manganese halide compounds, namely [A]2[MnBr4] (A = N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium ([P14]+) for (1) and N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium ([PP14]+) for (2)), lead to distinct photoluminescence quantum yields (81% for 1; 55% for 2). Further applications of luminescent 1 are also developed.

Abstract
We report here a new approach to achieve thermochromic luminescence through thermally induced ligand-field transformations. A one-dimensional chain manganese(ii) complex exhibits thermochromic luminescence from blue-green (502 nm) to red (617 nm) emission in a wide range of temperatures (480-80 K), ascribed to the conversion of a tetrahedronal to trigonal bipyramidal ligand-field via two-step single-crystal to single-crystal transformations.

Abstract
A dielectric anomaly induced by doping has been observed at about 340 K in chlorine-doped diisopropylammonium bromide. The dielectric anomaly has a switchable behaviour, which indicates potential applications on switches and sensors. Temperature-dependent Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry do not show any anomaly around the dielectric anomaly temperature, which prove that the dielectric anomaly does not come from structure phase transition and has no specific heat variety. It is assumed that this dielectric anomaly can be attributed to the freezing of ferroelectric domain walls induced by the pinning of point defects.

Abstract
Unprecedented organic-inorganic hybrid complexes, [Mn(L)3]MnHal4, containing both four- and hexacoordinated Mn2+ ions were synthesized by reacting MnCl2 or MnBr2 with bis(phosphine oxide) ligands (L) such as dppmO2, dppeO2, and 2,3-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,3-butadiene (dppbO2). In the [Mn(L)3]2+ cation of the complexes, the Mn2+ ion features a [MnO6] octahedral coordination environment (Oh), and the [MnHal4]2- anion adopts a tetrahedral geometry (Td). These "two-in-one" complexes exhibit strong long-lived luminescence (τav = 12-15 ms at 300 K) having interesting thermochromic behavior attributed to the thermal equilibrium between two emission bands. So, in an emission spectrum of the typical complex [Mn(dppbO2)3]MnBr4, the intense "red" (ca. 620 nm) and weak "green" (ca. 520 nm) bands, originating from Mn2+ ions in Oh and Td environments, respectively, are observed. Cooling from 300 to 77 K simultaneously leads to (i) redshift of both bands by ca. 20 nm, (ii) increasing their intensities, and (iii) causing a substantial change of their integral intensity ratio from about 4 : 1 to 2 : 1. As a result, the colour of the emission changes from orange (CIE 0.56, 0.45) at 300 K to deep red (CIE 0.62, 0.39) at 77 K. This behavior was rationalized using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescent spectroscopy at various temperatures. The high photoluminescence quantum yields (up to 61% at 300 K) and fascinating dual-emissive phosphorescence coupled with high thermal stability and solubility suggest a high potential of this novel class of emissive Mn2+ complexes as promising emitters for OLED devices and potential stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
A fundamental understanding of the interplay between the microscopic structure and macroscopic optoelectronic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials is essential to design new materials and improve device performance. However, how exactly the organic cations affect the structural phase transition and optoelectronic properties of the materials is not well understood. Here, real-time, in situ temperature-dependent neutron/X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal a transformation of the organic cation CH3 NH3+ from order to disorder with increasing temperature in CH3 NH3 PbBr3 perovskites. The molecular-level order-to-disorder transformation of CH3 NH3+ not only leads to an anomalous increase in PL intensity, but also results in a multidomain to single-domain structural transition. This discovery establishes the important role that organic cation ordering has in dictating structural order and anomalous optoelectronic phenomenon in hybrid perovskites.

Abstract
A mononuclear manganese(ii) complex with a chelating 4-(3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(piperidin-1-yl)pyrimidine ligand (L), [MnL2Cl2]·H2O, shows intriguing excitation wavelength-dependent emission. Depending on the excitation wavelength, the complex demonstrates three emission bands with the maxima at 380 nm, 440 nm and 495 nm. The 380 nm and 440 nm emissions originate from the π → π* and n → π* ligand-centered transitions. The long-wave 495 nm emission with microsecond lifetimes is related to the d-d transitions and/or metal-to-ligand and halogen-to-ligand charge transfer. The emission behavior of this complex is strongly temperature-dependent: upon cooling from 300 K down to 77 K, the intensity of emission considerably increases. The enhancement of the luminescence upon cooling is accompanied by the appearance of the vibrational structure. This complex is the first example of manganese(ii) complexes demonstrating excitation wavelength-dependent emission.

Abstract
Narrow band gaps and excellent ferroelectricity are intrinsically paradoxical in ferroelectrics as the leakage current caused by an increase in the number of thermally excited carriers will lead to a deterioration of ferroelectricity. A new molecular ferroelectric, hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI5 ), was now developed through band gap engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. It features an intrinsic band gap of 1.89 eV, and thus represents the first molecular ferroelectric with a band gap of less than 2.0 eV. Simultaneously, low-temperature solution processing was successfully applied to fabricate high-quality ferroelectric thin films based on HDA-BiI5 , for which high-precision controllable domain flips were realized. Owing to its narrow band gap and excellent ferroelectricity, HDA-BiI5 can be considered as a milestone in the exploitation of molecular ferroelectrics, with promising applications in high-density data storage and photovoltaic conversion.
