Abstract
Nanographenes, or extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, have been attracting increasing attention owing to their widespread applications in organic electronics. However, the atomically precise fabrication of nanographenes has thus far been achieved only through synthetic organic chemistry. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are popular research subjects due to their high stability, rigid planar structure, and characteristic optical spectra. The recent discovery of graphene, which can be regarded as giant PAH, has further stimulated research interest in this area. Chemists working with nanographene and heterocyclic analogs thereof have chosen it as their preferred tool for the assembly of large and complex architectures. The Scholl reaction has maintained significant relevance in contemporary organic synthesis with many advances in recent years and now ranks among the most useful C-C bond-forming processes for the generation of the π-conjugated frameworks of nanographene or their heterocyclic analogs. A broad range of oxidants and Lewis acids have found use in Scholl-type processes, including Cu(OTf)2/AlCl3, FeCl3, MoCl5, PIFA/BF3-Et2O, and DDQ, in combination with Brønsted or Lewis acids, and the surface-mediated reaction has found especially wide applications in PAH synthesis. Undoubtedly, the utility of the Scholl reaction is supreme in the construction of nanographene and their heterocyclic analogues. The detailed analysis of the progress achieved in this field reveals that many groups have contributed by pushing the boundary of structural possibilities, expanding into surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation and developing new reagents. In this review, we highlight and discuss the recent modifications in the Scholl reaction for nanographene synthesis using numerous oxidant systems. In addition, the merits or demerits of each oxidative reagent is described herein.

Abstract
2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) is the most widely used quinone with a high reduction potential, and it commonly mediates hydride transfer reactions and shows three accessible oxidation states: quinone (oxidized), semiquinone (one-electron-reduced), and hydroquinone (two-electron-reduced). DDQ has found broad utility as a stoichiometric oxidant in the functionalization of activated C-H bonds and the dehydrogenation of saturated C-C, C-O, and C-N bonds. The cost and toxicity of DDQ triggered recent efforts to develop methods that employ catalytic quantities of DDQ in combination with alternative stoichiometric oxidants. The aerobic catalytic approach was established for the selective oxidation of non-sterically hindered electron-rich benzyl methyl ethers and benzylic alcohols, and effectively extended to the oxidative deprotection of p-methoxybenzyl ethers to generate the alcohols in high selectivity. A combination of DDQ and protic acid is known to oxidize several aromatic donors to the corresponding cation radicals. The excited-state DDQ converts benzyls, heteroarenes, fluoroarenes, benzene, and olefins into their radical cation forms as well as chloride and other anions into their respective radicals. These reactive intermediates have been employed for the generation of C-C and C-X (N, O, or Cl) bonds in the synthesis of valuable natural products and organic compounds. To the best of our knowledge, however, there is still no review article exclusively describing the applications of DDQ in organic synthesis. Therefore, in the present review, we provide an overview of DDQ-induced organic transformations with their scope, limitations and the proposed reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Fused polycyclic aromatic compounds are interesting materials for organic electronics applications. To fine-tune photophysical or electrochemical properties, either various substituents can be attached or heteroatoms (such as N or S) can be incorporated into the fused aromatic backbone. Coronenes and heterocoronenes are promising compounds in this respect. Up until now, the possibilities for varying the attached fused heteroaromatics at the coronene core were quite limited, and realizing both electron-withdrawing and -donating rings at the same time was very difficult. Here, a series of pyridine, anisole and thiophene annulated tetraareno[a,d,j,m]coronenes has been synthesized by a facile two-step route that is a combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and a following cyclization step, starting from three different diarenoperylene dibromides. The contorted molecular π-planes of the obtained cata-condensed tetraarenocoronenes were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and the photophysical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclovoltammetry.

Abstract
A highly efficient strategy for the direct thiolation of phenols under transition metal-free and solvent-free conditions has been developed. These reactions are operationally simple with employing air (molecular oxygen) as an ideal oxidant and can selectively provide mono- and dithiolation products in good to excellent yields under basic conditions. The reaction tolerates a broad range of aryl thiols and arenes and is especially applicable for large-scale synthesis.

Abstract
We employed the density functionaly theory (DFT)-predicted regioselectivity of the intramolecular Scholl reaction in phenanthrene and dibenzo[g,p]chrysene frameworks to obtain π-extended mono and double [7]helicenes, respectively. The formation of these helical structures occurs despite the buildup of a large strain energy up to 30 kcal/mol compared with their most stable isomers. The twisted and strained structures were characterized and analyzed by experimental (NMR, UV-vis, emission, electrochemistry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction) techniques and were further supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract
A bowl-shaped nitrogen-doped nanographene composed of a pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core substituted with six arene rings circularly bonded with one another has been prepared via a concise synthetic strategy encompassing the multicomponent tetraarylpyrrolopyrrole (TAPP) synthesis, the Scholl reaction, and intramolecular direct arylation. This synthesis represents the first case of programmed sequential intramolecular direct arylation reactions utilizing the different reactivity of C-Br and C-Cl bonds. The target compound contains two central pentagons confined between two adjacent heptagons-the inverse Stone-Thrower-Wales topology. The presence of both five- and seven-membered rings in the final structure is responsible for interesting properties such as a perpendicularly aligned dipole moment, absorption and fluorescence in the orange-red region, weak emission originating from the charge-transfer character of a low-energy absorption band, and a high lying HOMO. In the solid state slipped convex-to-convex π-π stacking dominates.

Abstract
A planar dibenzo-peri-hexacene derivative (2) was synthesized via FeCl3 -mediated Scholl reaction from a cyclopenta-fused perylene (CP) based polyphenylene precursor (1). However, an unexpected octagon-containing, negatively curved molecule (3) was obtained in nearly quantitative yield when 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and methanesulfonic acid (MeSO3 H) were used. Similar results were observed when two smaller-sized precursors containing one (4) or two CP units (5) were tested. X-ray crystallographic analysis also revealed that there is no close π-π stacking between neighboring π-conjugated skeletons. DFT calculations suggest a radical cation mechanism in the presence of FeCl3 while an arenium ion pathway for the DDQ/MeSO3 H mediated Scholl reaction, which can well explain the selective formation of hexagons and octagons under different conditions. The obtained compounds showed tunable optical and electrochemical properties.

Abstract
Nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most important classes of compounds, with potential applications in nearly all areas of science and technology. While the theoretically possible number of nanographene structures is extraordinary, most of these molecules remain synthetically out of reach due to a lack of programmable and diversity-oriented synthetic methods, and their potentially huge structure-property diversity has not been fully exploited. Herein we report a diversity-oriented, growth-from-template synthesis of nanographenes enabled by iterative annulative π-extension (APEX) reactions from small PAH starting materials. The developed dearomative annulative π-extension (DAPEX) reaction enables π-elongation at the less-reactive M-regions of PAHs, and is successfully combined with complementary APEX reactions that occur at K- and bay-regions to access a variety of previously untapped nanographenes. Nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important classes of compounds with numerous applications, but challenging to access due to a lack of programmable and diversity-oriented methods. Here, the authors report a diversity-oriented, growth-from-template synthesis of nanographenes enabled by iterative annulative π-extension reactions from small PAH starting materials.

Abstract
Organometallic complexes are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology. Whereas their preparation has historically relied on ligand synthesis followed by coordination to metal centers, the ability to efficiently diversify their structures remains a synthetic challenge. A promising yet underdeveloped strategy involves the direct manipulation of ligands that are already bound to a metal center, also known as chemistry-on-the-complex. Herein, we introduce a versatile platform for on-the-complex annulation reactions using transient aryne intermediates. In one variant, organometallic complexes undergo transition metal-catalyzed annulations with in situ generated arynes to form up to six new carbon-carbon bonds. In the other variant, an organometallic complex bearing a free aryne is generated and intercepted in cycloaddition reactions to access unique scaffolds. Our studies, centered around privileged polypyridyl metal complexes, provide an effective strategy to annulate organometallic complexes and access complex metal-ligand scaffolds, while furthering the synthetic utility of strained intermediates in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Nucleophilic addition of carbon-centered nucleophiles to nanographene ketones represents a valuable late-stage method for the functionalization of zigzag nanographenes, but its use is rare in the chemical literature. Using two model systems, non-Kekulé triangulene-4,8-dione and Kekulé anthanthrone, we identify unexpected regioselectivities and uncover the rules that govern these reactions. Considering the large number of nanographene ketones that have been reported since the pioneering work of Eric Clar, this method enables synthesis and exploration of hitherto unknown functionalized nanographenes.

This novel catalytic system enables formation of various spirocyclic dienone products including those unable to be accessed by previously reported methods efficiently under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
Mesomorphous butterfly-like shape molecules based on benzodithiophene, benzodithiophene-4,8-dione and cyclopentadithiophen-4-one core moieties were efficiently synthesized by the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and Scholl oxidative cyclo-dehydrogenation reactions' tandem. Most of the butterfly molecules spontaneously self-organize into columnar hexagonal mesophase. The electron-deficient systems possess strong solvent-gelling ability but are not luminescent, whereas the electron-rich terms do not form gels but strongly emit light between 400 and 600 nm. The charge carrier mobility was also measured by time-of-flight transient photocurrent technique in the mesophases for some of the compounds. They display hole-transport performances with positive charge mobility in the 10-3 cm-2 V-1 s-1 range, consistent with the high degree of ordering and stability of the columnar superstructures. In particular, the mesogen with a benzodithiophen-4,8-dione core shows ambipolar charge carrier transport with both high electron (μe =6.6×10-3 cm-2 V-1 s-1 ) and hole (μh =4.5×10-3 cm-2 V-1 s-1 ) mobility values.

Abstract
The transition-metal-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of nitriles and alkynes is an established synthetic approach to pyridines; however, these cycloadditions often rely on the use of tethered diynes or cyanoalkynes as one of the reactants. Thus, examples of efficient, fully intermolecular catalytic [2+2+2] pyridine synthesis, especially those employing unactivated nitriles and internal alkynes leading to pentasubstituted pyridines, remain scarce. Herein, we report on simple and inexpensive catalytic systems based on cobalt(II) iodide, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, and Zn that promote [2+2+2] cycloaddition of various nitriles and diarylacetylenes for the synthesis of a broad range of polyarylated pyridines. DFT studies support a reaction pathway involving oxidative coupling of two alkynes, insertion of the nitrile into a cobaltacyclopentadiene, and C-N reductive elimination. The resulting tetra- and pentaarylpyridines serve as precursors to hitherto unprecedented nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via mechanochemically assisted multifold reductive cyclodehydrogenation.

Abstract
The layered structures of graphite and related nanographene molecules play key roles in their physical and electronic functions. However, the stacking modes of negatively curved nanographenes remain unclear, owing to the lack of suitable nanographene molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and one-dimensional supramolecular self-assembly of negatively curved nanographenes without any assembly-assisting substituents. This curved nanographene self-assembles in various organic solvents and acts as an efficient gelator. The formation of nanofibers was confirmed by microscopic measurements, and an unprecedented double-helix assembly by continuous π-π stacking was uncovered by three-dimensional electron crystallography. This work not only reports the discovery of an all-sp2-carbon supramolecular π-organogelator with negative curvature but also demonstrates the power of three-dimensional electron crystallography for the structural determination of submicrometer-sized molecular alignment.

Abstract
Mildly thermal air or HNO3 oxidized activated carbons catalyse oxidative dehydrogenative couplings of benzo[b]fused heteroaryl 2,2'-dimers, e.g., 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-indole, to chiral 3,3'-coupled cyclooctatetraenes or carbazole-type migrative products under O2 atmosphere. DFT calculations show that the radical cation and the Scholl-type arenium cation mechanisms lead to different products with 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-indole, being in accord with experimental product distributions.

Abstract
In this paper, we describe the stereospecific synthesis and functional properties of C2- and C1-symmetric pyrene-fused [5]helicene molecules 1 and 2 connected via hexagonal and heptagonal rings, respectively. Both molecules showed high configurational stability and distinct functional properties, which were attributed to the fusing mode of [5]helicene with the pyrene and molecular symmetry. The estimated Gibbs activation energy for enantiomerization of 2 is one of the highest reported values for any π-conjugated molecules incorporating [5]helicene moiety.

Abstract
Two types of helically chiral compounds bearing one and two boron atoms were synthesized by a modular approach. Formation of the helical scaffolds was executed by the introduction of boron to flexible biaryl and triaryl derived from small achiral building blocks. All-ortho-fused azabora[7]helicenes feature exceptional configurational stability, blue or green fluorescence with quantum yields (Φfl ) of 18-24 % in solution, green or yellow solid-state emission (Φfl up to 23 %), and strong chiroptical response with large dissymmetry factors of up to 1.12×10-2 . Azabora[9]helicenes consisting of angularly and linearly fused rings are blue emitters exhibiting Φfl of up to 47 % in CH2 Cl2 and 25 % in the solid state. As revealed by the DFT calculations, their P-M interconversion pathway is more complex than that of H1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis shows clear differences in the packing arrangement of methyl and phenyl derivatives. These molecules are proposed as primary structures of extended helices.

Abstract
We report a new family of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-based helical nanographenes incorporating π-extended carbo[5]helicenes bearing an octagonal carbocycle. This family represents a new kind of highly distorted saddle-helix hybrid nanographenes. For the first time, the eight-membered ring becomes a constituent of both a carbo[5]helicene and a HBC and thus, the negative curvature is responsible for twisting both units. This novel chiral motif, namely, oct-[5]helicene results in the largest torsion angle recorded so far for a carbo[5]helicene (θ=79.5°), as it has been suggested by DFT-calculations and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Consequently, the barriers of isomerization become exceptionally high for a [5]helicene unsubstituted in the fjord region since neither racemization nor decomposition were observed at 200 °C for 1 or 3 during 5 h. Therefore, racemic resolutions allowed subsequent chiroptical studies showing the ECD and CPL responses of this novel family of chiral nanographenes.

Abstract
The selective FeCl3-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reaction between phenols and primary, secondary, and tertiary 2-aminonaphthalene derivatives was investigated. The generality of this scalable method provides a sustainable alternative for preparing N,O-biaryl compounds that are widely used as ligands and catalysts. Based on a comprehensive kinetic investigation, a catalytic cycle involving a ternary complex that binds to both the coupling partners and the oxidant during the key oxidative coupling step is postulated. Furthermore, the studies showed that the reaction is regulated by off-cycle acid-base and ligand exchange processes.

Abstract
We have developed a convenient synthesis of tetrahydroindolizino[8,7-b]indole derivatives via intramolecular dearomatization of indole. Highly functionalized tetrahydroindolizinoindoles can be prepared in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in good to excellent yields (up to >99% yield) with novel designed pyrrole-tethered indoles. The same products can also be synthesized through a mild Fe(OTf)3-catalyzed process in acceptable to good yields (up to 75% yield).

Abstract
Chrysene and its bisbenzannulated homologue, naphtho[2,3-c]tetraphene, were synthesized through a PtCl2 -catalyzed cyclization of alkynes, which also furnished corresponding biaryls subsequent to a Glaser coupling reaction of the starting alkynes. The optoelectronic properties of 5,5'-bichrysenyl and 6,6'-binaphtho[2,3-c]tetraphene were compared to their chrysene-based "monomers". Oxidative cyclodehydrogenations of bichrysenyl and its higher homologue towards large nanographenes were also investigated.

Abstract
In this study, a heterogeneous rhodium-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling reaction of anilines utilizing molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant is reported. Employing a commercially available and recyclable Rh/C catalyst enabled the oxidative dimerization of various anilines, including N,N-disubstituted and N-monosubstituted anilines, as well as diarylamines, triarylamines, and carbazoles. Additionally, the catalytic protocol was extended to the ortho-ortho coupling of anilines, affording 2,2'-diaminobiphenyls with high regioselectivity. Notably, the developed approach provides rapid access to diversely functionalized benzidines and diaminobiphenyls in an operationally simple, practical, and environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract
A novel intermolecular tandem oxidative aromatic coupling between arylidene fluorenes and unfunctionalized aromatics mediated by a DDQ/TFA oxidation system has been developed for the construction of 9,10-diarylphenanthrenes (DAPs). The formation of a benzylic carbocation species possessing a quaternary sp3-carbon center on the fluorene moiety by an intermolecular oxidative Friedel-Crafts reaction of two different arenes successfully triggered the subsequent ring expansion to afford DAPs.
