Artificial light-harvesting systems based on macrocycle-assisted supramolecular assembly in aqueous media

Light-harvesting, which involves the conversion of sunlight into chemical energy by natural systems such as plants, bacteria, is one of the most universal routine activities in nature. Thus far, various artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) have been fabricated toward solar energy utilization through mimicking natural photosynthesis in simplified and altered ways. Macrocycles are supramolecular hosts with unique cavities, in which specific guest molecules can be recognized based on non-covalent interactions. They have been widely employed in constructing LHSs due to their ability to form supramolecular assembly and dynamic molecular activity. In this review, we mainly focus on some representative examples reported by our group and other groups. Specifically, the fabrication of LHSs and their related discussions, such as a high donor/acceptor ratio, driving force for the formation of supramolecular assemblies and energy transfer mechanisms using different water-soluble macrocycles such as cyclodextrins (CD), pillararenes (PA), calixarenes (CA), cucurbiturils (CB), and other macrocycles will be included. In addition, how the resulting supramolecular self-assembled LHSs could be potentially utilized for photocatalysis, sensing, and imaging is also explained in detail. Challenges and developing trends for photochemical solar energy conversion will also be presented.

Bottom-Up Solid-State Molecular Assembly via Guest-Induced Intermolecular Interactions

The manipulation of molecular motions to construct highly ordered supramolecular architectures from chaos in the solid state is considered to be far more complex and challenging in comparison to that in solution. In this work, a bottom-up molecular assembly approach based on a newly designed skeleton-trimmed pillar[5]arene analogue, namely the permethylated leggero pillar[5]arene MeP[5]L, is developed in the solid state. An amorphous powder of MeP[5]L can take up certain guest vapors to form various ordered linker-containing solid-state molecular assemblies, which can be further used to construct a thermodynamically favored linker-free superstructure upon heating. These approaches are driven by vapor-induced solid-state molecular motions followed by a thermally triggered phase-to-phase transformation. The intermolecular interactions play a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the resulting assemblies. This research will open new insights into exploring controllable molecular motions and assemblies in the solid state, providing new perspectives in supramolecular chemistry and materials.

Adsorptive separation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone by nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene

As feedstock chemicals with similar boiling points, cyclohexanol (CHOL) and cyclohexanone (CHON) are often obtained as mixtures during production processes. Separation of mixed CHOL and CHON is important but energy-consuming by distillation. Here we report the development of a new macrocycle RhombicArene, which forms a host-guest complex with CHON through C-H⋯π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene exhibit excellent capability for rapid (30 minutes), exclusive (>99.9%), and recyclable vapor adsorption of CHON in the presence of CHOL under mild and user-friendly conditions.

Nonporous Adaptive Calix[4]pyrrole Crystals for Polar Compound Separations

The use of molecular crystalline materials for the separation and purification of chemical raw materials, particularly polar compounds with similar physical and chemical properties, represents an ongoing challenge. This is particularly true for volatile feedstocks that form binary azeotropes. Here we report a new cavity-extended version of calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) that readily forms nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs). These C4P-based NACs allow pyridine to be separated from toluene/pyridine mixtures with nearly 100% purity, as well as the removal of 1,4-dioxane from 1,4-dioxane/water mixtures with high adsorption capacity. Removal of the polar guest (pyridine or 1,4-dioxane) from the guest-loaded NACs by heating under vacuum produces the guest-free crystalline form. In the case of both guests, the C4P material could be reused as demonstrated through 10 uptake and release cycles without apparent performance loss.

Supramolecular tessellations by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene

Supramolecular tessellation has gained increasing interest in supramolecular chemistry for its structural aesthetics and potential applications in optics, magnetics and catalysis. In this work, a new kind of supramolecular tessellations (STs) have been fabricated by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene (P4). ST with rhombic tiling pattern was first constructed by P4 itself through favorable π···π interactions between anthracene units of adjacent P4. Notably, various highly ordered STs with different tiling patterns have been fabricated based on exo-wall charge transfer interactions between electron-rich P4 and electron-deficient guests including 1,4-dinitrobenzene, terephthalonitrile and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile. Interestingly, solvent modulation and guest selection played a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the co-crystal superstructures. This work not only proves that P4 is an excellent macrocyclic building block for the fabrication of various STs, but also provides a new perspective and opportunity for the design and construction of supramolecular two-dimensional organic materials.

Supramolecular tessellation has gained increasing interest in supramolecular chemistry for its structural aesthetics and potential applications in optics, magnetics and catalysis. Here, the authors expand the examples of molecular building blocks for supramolecular tessellation and fabricate supramolecular tessellations using the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene.

Aggregation Mode, Host-Guest Chemistry in Water, and Extraction Capability of an Uncharged, Water-Soluble, Liquid Pillar[5]arene Derivative

An uncharged, water-soluble per-ethylene-glycol pillar[5]arene derivative (1) was synthesized and its aggregation mode, host-guest chemistry in water and extraction ability was explored. Compound 1 is a liquid at room temperature; in water, limited self-aggregation occurred at high concentrations as deduced from diffusion NMR and dynamic light scattering. Compound 1 forms pseudo-rotaxane-like 1 : 1 host-guest complexes with 1,ω-di-substituted alkanes with association constants on the order of 103 -104  m-1 . Interestingly, NMR experiments showed that the guest location relative to the host ring system differs among the different complexes. In proof-of-concept experiments, compound 1 was shown to extract structurally related organic compounds from benzene into water with significant selectivity. Compound 1, which is a liquid at room temperature and has only limited interactions with its side arms, can, in principle, be regarded as a complement to or as a kind of type I porous liquid.

Reversible "On/Off" Chiral Amplification of Pillar[5]arene Assemblies by Dual External Stimuli

We report dual-stimuli, thermo- and photostimuli, responsive chiral assemblies, of planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes with azobenzene groups on their rims. The azobenzene-substituted planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes were synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition "click" reaction of azide-substituted planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes containing S or R stereogenic carbon atoms with an alkyne-substituted azobenzene. These decaazides with stereogenic carbons could act as starting points for a large library of planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes. Homeotropic alignment of azobenzenes, caused by the mesogenic property of the azobenzene groups, was induced by annealing a film of the azobenzene-substituted planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes. The alignment resulted in chiral propagation from the planar-chiral pillar[5]arene cores to the azobenzene area and caused significant chiral amplification consequently. These aligned chiral assemblies were collapsed by trans to cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene groups, resulting in chiral amplification off, and reconstructed by cis to trans thermo-isomerization, again turning on the chiral amplification.

Supramolecular Assembly with Aggregation-Induced Emission Property for Sensing and Detection

The fabrication of new supramolecular materials for real-time detection of analytes including ions, organic pollutants, gases, biomolecules, and drugs is of pivotal importance in industrial manufacture, clinical treatment, and environmental remediation. Incorporating fluorescent molecules with distinct aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects into supramolecular assemblies has received much attention over the past two decades, owing to the remarkable performance of the AIE-active supramolecular materials in sensing and detection. In this minireview, we summarize the recent progress of superior detection systems on the basis of supramolecular assemblies accompanied with AIE features. We envision that this minireview will be helpful and timely for relevant researchers to stimulate new thinking for constructing new AIE-based supramolecular materials with advanced architectures for effective sensing and detection.

Redox-Driven Chiral Inversion of Water-Soluble Pillar[5]arene with l-Cystine Derivative in the Aqueous Medium

In the aqueous solution, l-CySS-OMe induced pS-WP5 from racemic WP5. Upon the addition of dithiothreitol as a reducing reagent to the above system, pS-WP5 was then converted to pR-WP5 for the reason that l-CySS-OMe was reduced to l-Cys-OMe. Followed by the addition of H₂O₂ as an oxidation reagent, pR-WP5 was converted back to pS-WP5. The chiral conformational transferring process between pR-WP5 and pS-WP5 can be easily and visually observed by reading the CD signal.

Tuning the porosity of triangular supramolecular adsorbents for superior haloalkane isomer separations

Distillation-free separations of haloalkane isomers represents a persistent challenge for the chemical industry. Several classic molecular sorbents show high selectivity in the context of such separations; however, most suffer from limited tunability or poor stability. Herein, we report the results of a comparative study involving three trianglamine and trianglimine macrocycles as supramolecular adsorbents for the selective separation of halobutane isomers. Methylene-bridged trianglamine, TA, was found to capture preferentially 1-chlorobutane (1-CBU) from a mixture of 1-CBU and 2-chlorobutane (2-CBU) with a purity of 98.1%. It also separates 1-bromobutane (1-BBU) from a mixture of 1-BBU and 2-bromobutane (2-BBU) with a purity of 96.4%. The observed selectivity is ascribed to the thermodynamic stability of the TA-based host–guest complexes. Based on single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, a [3]pseudorotaxane structure (2TA⊃1-CBU) is formed between TA and 1-CBU that is characterized by an increased level of noncovalent interactions compared to the corresponding [2]pseudorotaxane structure seen for TA⊃2-CBU. We believe that molecular sorbents that rely on specific molecular recognition events, such as the triangular pores detailed here, will prove useful as next generation sorbents in energy-efficient separations.

The methylene-bridged trianglamine (TA) can selectively capture 1-chlorobutane from a mixture of 1-chlorobutane and 2-chlorobutane due to the greater thermodynamic stability of the TA-based host–guest complex formed with 1-chlorobutane.

Elaboration of Porous Salts

A large library of novel porous salts based on charged coordination cages was synthesized via straightforward salt metathesis reactions. For these, solutions of salts of oppositely charged coordination cages are mixed to precipitate MOF-like permanently porous products where metal identity, pore size, ligand functional groups, and surface area are highly tunable. For most of these materials, the constituent cages combine in the ratios expected based on their charge. Additional studies focused on the rate of salt metathesis or reaction stoichiometry as variables to tune particle size or product composition, respectively. It is expected that the design principles outlined here will be widely applicable for the synthesis of new porous salts based on a variety of charged porous molecular precursors.

Multifunctional Pillar[n]arene-Based Smart Nanomaterials

The construction of smart nanomaterials from host macrocycles that are responsive to specific stimuli has gained significant attention in recent years. The application of pillar[n]arenes has been of particular interest given their ease of functionalization and tunability of the intrinsic cavity electronic properties that allows them to encapsulate a great variety of guests and complex with metal ions with high selectivity via noncovalent interactions, endowing them with captivating properties and functions. Herein, we present the most recent advances in the design and functionalization of pillar[n]arene-based smart nanomaterials, and their applications for sensing, catalysis, drug delivery, and artificial transmembrane channels.

A medium-firm drug-candidate library of cryptand-like structures on T7 phage: design and selection of a strong binder for Hsp90

We designed and synthesized a medium-firm drug-candidate library of cryptand-like structures possessing a randomized peptide linker on the bacteriophage T7. From the macrocyclic library with a 109 diversity, we obtained a binder toward a cancer-related protein (Hsp90) with an antibody-like strong affinity (KD = 62 nM) and the binding was driven by the enthalpy. The selected supramolecular ligand inhibited Hsp90 activity by site-specific binding outside of the well-known ATP-binding pocket on the N-terminal domain (NTD).

Solvent-Driven Chirality Switching of a Pillar[4]arene[1]quinone Having a Chiral Amine-Substituted Quinone Subunit

Several new chiral pillar[4]arene[1]quinone derivatives were synthesized by reacting pillar[4]arene[1]quinone (EtP4Q1), containing four 1,4-diethoxybenzene units and one benzoquinone unit, with various chiral amines via Michael addition. Due to the direct introduction of chiral substituents on the rim of pillar[n]arene and the close location of the chiral center to the rim of EtP4Q1, the newly prepared compounds showed unique chiroptical properties without complicated chiral resolution processes, and unprecedented high anisotropy factor of up to −0.018 at the charge transfer absorption band was observed. Intriguingly, the benzene sidearm attached pillar[4]arene[1]quinone derivative 1a showed solvent- and complexation-driven chirality inversion. This work provides a promising potential for absolute asymmetric synthesis of pillararene-based derivatives.

Pillararene-enriched linear conjugated polymer materials with thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole linkages for photocatalysis

A heteroatom-doped conjugated polymer with tunable bandgap is synthesized using pillararenes as the electron-rich C2 symmetric nodes and thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole as the electron-deficient linkage. The influence of pillararenes in regulating the band structure and photogenerated charge carrier transportation for photocatalytic environmental contaminant degradation has been revealed.

Tailoring CO2-Activated Ion Nanochannels Using Macrocyclic Pillararenes

Gas-responsive nanochannels have great relevance for applications in many fields. Inspired by CO₂-sensitive ion channels, herein we present an approach for designing solid-state nanochannels that allow controlled regulation of ion transport in response to alternate CO₂/N₂ stimuli. The pillar[5]arene (P5N) bearing diethylamine groups can convert into the water-soluble host P5C, containing cationic tertiary ammonium salt groups after absorbing CO₂. Subsequently, the nanochannel walls are tailored using P5N-based host-guest chemistry. The ion transport rate of K⁺ in the P5N nanochannels under CO₂ was 1.66 × 10^-4 mol h^-1 m^-2, whereas that under N₂ was 7.98 × 10^-4 mol h^-1 m^-2. Notably, there was no significant change to the ion current after eight cycles, which may indicate the stability and repeatability of CO₂-activated ion nanochannels. It is speculated that the difference in ion conductance resulted from the change in wettability and surface charge within the nanochannels in response to the gas stimuli. Achieving CO₂-activated ion transport in solid-state nanochannels opens new avenues for biomimetic nanopore systems and advanced separation processes.

Selective Photodimerization in a Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework

For the most part, enzymes contain one active site wherein they catalyze in a serial manner chemical reactions between substrates both efficiently and rapidly. Imagine if a situation could be created within a chiral porous crystal containing trillions of active sites where substrates can reside in vast numbers before being converted in parallel into products. Here, we report how it is possible to incorporate 1-anthracenecarboxylate (1-AC^-) as a substrate into a γ-cyclodextrin-containing metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1), where the metals are K⁺ cations, prior to carrying out [4+4] photodimerizations between pairs of substrate molecules, affording selectively one of four possible regioisomers. One of the high-yielding regioisomers exhibits optical activity as a result of the presence of an 8:1 ratio of the two enantiomers following separation by high-performance liquid chromatography. The solid-state superstructure of 1-anthracenecarboxylate potassium salt (1-ACK), which is co-crystallized with γ-cyclodextrin, reveals that pairs of substrate molecules are not only packed inside tunnels between spherical cavities present in CD-MOF-1, but also stabilized-in addition to hydrogen-bonding to the C-2 and C-3 hydroxyl groups on the d-glucopyranosyl residues present in the γ-cyclodextrin tori-by combinations of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between the carboxyl groups in 1-AC^- and four K⁺ cations on the waistline between the two γ-cyclodextrin tori in the tunnels. These non-covalent bonding interactions result in preferred co-conformations that account for the highly regio- and enantioselective [4+4] cycloaddition during photoirradiation. Theoretical calculations, in conjunction with crystallography, support the regio- and stereochemical outcome of the photodimerization.

A Cavity-Tailored Metal-Organic Cage Entraps Gases Selectively in Solution and the Amorphous Solid State

Here we report the subcomponent self-assembly of a truxene-faced Zn4 L4 tetrahedron, which is capable of binding the smallest hydrocarbons in solution. By deliberately incorporating inward-facing ethyl groups on the truxene faces, the resulting partially-filled cage cavity was tailored to encapsulate methane, ethane, and ethene via van der Waals interactions at atmospheric pressure in acetonitrile, and also in the amorphous solid state. Interestingly, gas capture showed divergent selectivities in solution and the amorphous solid state. The selective binding may prove useful in designing new processes for the purification of methane and ethane as feedstocks for chemical synthesis.

Capture and Reuse of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) for a Plastics Circular Economy: A Review

Plastic production has been increasing at enormous rates. Particularly, the socioenvironmental problems resulting from the linear economy model have been widely discussed, especially regarding plastic pieces intended for single use and disposed improperly in the environment. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions caused by inappropriate disposal or recycling and by the many production stages have not been discussed thoroughly. Regarding the manufacturing processes, carbon dioxide is produced mainly through heating of process streams and intrinsic chemical transformations, explaining why first-generation petrochemical industries are among the top five most greenhouse gas (GHG)-polluting businesses. Consequently, the plastics market must pursue full integration with the circular economy approach, promoting the simultaneous recycling of plastic wastes and sequestration and reuse of CO2 through carbon capture and utilization (CCU) strategies, which can be employed for the manufacture of olefins (among other process streams) and reduction of fossil-fuel demands and environmental impacts. Considering the previous remarks, the present manuscript’s purpose is to provide a review regarding CO2 emissions, capture, and utilization in the plastics industry. A detailed bibliometric review of both the scientific and the patent literature available is presented, including the description of key players and critical discussions and suggestions about the main technologies. As shown throughout the text, the number of documents has grown steadily, illustrating the increasing importance of CCU strategies in the field of plastics manufacture.

Pillararene-based self-assemblies for electrochemical biosensors

The ingenious design and synthesis of novel macrocycles bring out renewed vigor of supramolecular chemistry in the past decade. As an intriguing class of macrocycles, pillararene and pillararene-based functional materials that are constructed through the noncovalent bond self-assembly approach have been undergoing a rapid growth, benefiting from their unique structures and physiochemical properties. This review elaborates recent significant advances of electrochemical studies based on pillararene systems. Fundamental electrochemical behavior of pillar[n]arene[m]quinone and pillararene-based self-assemblies as well as their applications in electrochemical biosensors are highlighted. In addition, the advantages and functions of pillararene self-assembly systems resulted from the unique molecular architectures are analyzed. Finally, current challenges and future development tendency in this burgeoning field are discussed from the viewpoint of both fundamental research and applications. Overall, this review not only manifests the main development vein of pillararene-based electrochemical systems, but also conquers a solid foundation for their further bioelectrochemical applications.

Design Guidelines for Cationic Pillar[n]arenes that Prevent Biofilm Formation by Gram-Positive Pathogens

Bacterial biofilms are a major threat to human health, causing persistent infections that lead to millions of fatalities worldwide every year. Biofilms also cause billions of dollars of damage annually by interfering with industrial processes. Recently, cationic pillararenes were found to be potent inhibitors of biofilm formation in Gram-positive bacteria. To identify the structural features of pillararenes that result in antibiofilm activity, we evaluated the activity of 16 cationic pillar[5]arene derivatives including that of the first cationic water-soluble pillar[5]arene-based rotaxane. Twelve of the derivatives were potent inhibitors of biofilm formation by Gram-positive pathogens. Structure activity analyses of our pillararene derivatives indicated that positively charged head groups are critical for the observed antibiofilm activity. Although certain changes in the lipophilicity of the substituents on the positively charged head groups are tolerated, dramatic elevation in the hydrophobicity of the substituents or an increase in steric bulk on these positive charges abolishes the antibiofilm activity. An increase in the overall positive charge from 10 to 20 did not affect the activity significantly, but pillararenes with 5 positive charges and 5 long alkyl chains had reduced activity. Surprisingly, the cavity of the pillar[n]arene is not essential for the observed activity, although the macrocyclic structure of the pillar[n]arene core, which facilitates the clustering of the positive charges, appears important. Interestingly, the compounds found to be efficient inhibitors of biofilm formation were nonhemolytic at concentrations that are ∼100-fold of their MBIC₅₀ (the minimal concentration of a compound at which at least 50% inhibition of biofilm formation was observed compared to untreated cells). The structure–activity relationship guidelines established here pave the way for a rational design of potent cationic pillar[n]arene-based antibiofilm agents.

Adsorptive Molecular Sieving of Styrene over Ethylbenzene by Trianglimine Crystals

The separation of styrene (ST) and ethylbenzene (EB) mixtures is of great importance in the petrochemical and plastics industries. Current technology employs multiple cycles of energy-intensive distillation due to the very close boiling points of ST and EB. Here, we show that the molecular sieving properties of easily scalable and stable trianglimine crystals offer ultrahigh selectivity (99%) for styrene separation. The unique molecular sieving properties of trianglimine crystals are corroborated by DFT calculations, suggesting that the incorporation of the nonplanar EB requires a significant deformation of the macrocyclic cavity whereas the planar ST can be easily accommodated in the cavity.

Metallo-Supramolecular Coordination Polymers Based on Amidopyridine Derivatives of Pillar[5]arene and Cu(II) and Pd(II) Cations: Synthesis and Recognition of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Decasubstituted pillar[5]arenes containing amidopyridine fragments have been synthesized for the first time. As was shown by UV-vis spectroscopy, the pillar[5]arenes with p-amidopyridine fragments form supramolecular associates with Cu(II) and Pd(II) cations in methanol in a 2:1 ratio. Using a sol-gel approach these associates are transformed into metallo-supramolecular coordination polymers (supramolecular gels) which were characterized as amorphous powders by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The powders are able to selectively adsorb up to 46% of nitrophenols from water and were incorporated into an electrochemical sensor to selectively recognize them in aqueous acidic solution.

Pyridine Detection Using Supramolecular Organic Frameworks Incorporating Cucurbit[10]uril

A physical impregnation method is presented in this study, providing a facile approach to encapsulating functional guest molecules (GMs) into robust crystalline supramolecular organic frameworks incorporating cucurbit[10]uril (Q[10]-SOF). As Q[10]-SOF has high evaporated pyridine affinity under normal atmospheric pressure, pyridine molecules in this method were successfully encapsulated into the nanospace formed by GMs and Q[10]-SOF while retaining their crystal framework, morphology, and high stability. GMs@Q[10]-SOF solid materials were found to respond to pyridine, being suitable to be used as solid sensors. Notably, Q[10]-SOF loading with pyrene exhibited a unique response to pyridine along with dramatic fluorescence quenching; loading with dansyl chloride exhibited a unique response to pyridine along with significant fluorescence enhancement, having a quick response within 60 s. Our findings represent a critical advancement in the design of pyridine detection and adsorption for commercial gas identification and sensing.

Highly Selective Separation of Isopropylbenzene and α-Methylstyrene by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Perbromoethylated Pillararene via Vapor- and Liquid-Phase Adsorptions

Isopropylbenzene (IPB) and α-methylstyrene (AMS), two members of C9 aromatics, are important in both industrial production and laboratory research, but the separation of IPB/AMS mixtures is still a big challenge. Here, we provide a new strategy to separate IPB and AMS using nonporous adaptive crystals of four pillararenes, perethylated pillar[5]arene, perethylated pillar[6]arene, perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene, and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). Among them, BrP6 selectively adsorbs IPB from an equal volume mixture of IPB and AMS with >95% purity for solid-vapor phase adsorption and >94% purity for solid-liquid phase adsorption, while the selectivities for the other three pillararenes are unsatisfactory. Single-crystal structural analyses combined with powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the selectivity arises from the different stabilities of guest-loaded BrP6 crystals. Moreover, the reversible transitions between guest-free and IPB-loaded structures indicate the preeminent recycling performance of BrP6 crystals.

Robust Supramolecular Nano-Tunnels Built from Molecular Bricks*

Herein we report a linear ionic molecule that assembles into a supramolecular nano-tunnel structure through synergy of trident-type ionic interactions and π-π stacking interactions. The nano-tunnel crystal exhibits anisotropic guest adsorption behavior. The material shows good thermal stability and undergoes multi-stage single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transformations to a nonporous structure on heating. The material exhibits a remarkable chemical stability under both acidic and basic conditions, which is rarely observed in supramolecular organic frameworks and is often related to structures with designed hydrogen-bonding interactions. Because of the high polarity of the tunnels, this molecular crystal also shows a large CO₂ -adsorption capacity while excluding other gases at ambient temperature, leading to high CO₂ /CH₄ selectivity. Aggregation-induced emission of the molecules gives the bulk crystals vapochromic properties.

A Visible-Light-Regulated Chloride Transport Channel Inspired by Rhodopsin

Inspired by the light-regulating capabilities of naturally occurring rhodopsin, we have constructed a visible-light-regulated Cl^- -transport membrane channel based on a supramolecular host-guest interaction. A natural retinal chromophore, capable of a visible-light response, is used as the guest and grafted into the artificial channel. Upon introduction of an ethyl-urea-derived pillar[6]arene (Urea-P6) host, threading or de-threading of the retinal and selective bonding of Cl^- can be utilized to regulate ion transport. Based on the visible-light responsiveness of the host-guest interaction, Cl^- transport can be regulated by visible light between ON and OFF states. Visible-light-regulated Cl^- transport as a chemical model permits to understand comparable biological ion-selective transport behaviors. Furthermore, this result also supplies a smart visible-light-responsive Cl^- transporter, which may have applications in natural photoelectric conversion and photo-controlled delivery systems.

Pressure-driven, solvation-directed planar chirality switching of cyclophano-pillar[5]arenes (molecular universal joints)

Planar chiral cyclophanopillar[5]arenes with a fused oligo(oxyethylene) or polymethylene subring (MUJs), existing as an equilibrium mixture of subring-included (in) and -excluded (out) conformers, respond to hydrostatic pressure to exhibit dynamic chiroptical property changes, leading to an unprecedented pressure-driven chirality inversion and the largest ever-reported leap of anisotropy (g) factor for the MUJ with a dodecamethylene subring. The pressure susceptivity of MUJs, assessed by the change in g per unit pressure, is a critical function of the size and nature of the subring incorporated and the solvent employed. Mechanistic elucidations reveal that the in-out equilibrium, as the origin of the MUJ's chiroptical property changes, is on a delicate balance of the competitive inclusion of subrings versus solvent molecules as well as the solvation of the excluded subring. The present results further encourage our use of pressure as a unique tool for dynamically manipulating various supramolecular devices/machines.

Metal–organic cages for molecular separations

Separation technology is central to industries as diverse as petroleum, pharmaceuticals, mining and life sciences. Metal-organic cages, a class of molecular containers formed via coordination-driven self-assembly, show great promise as separation agents. Precise control of the shape, size and functionalization of cage cavities enables them to selectively bind and distinguish a wide scope of physicochemically similar substances in solution. Extensive research has, thus, been performed involving separations of high-value targets using coordination cages, ranging from gases and liquids to compounds dissolved in solution. Enantiopure capsules also show great potential for the separation of chiral molecules. The use of crystalline cages as absorbents, or the incorporation of cages into polymer membranes, could increase the selectivity and efficiency of separation processes. This Review covers recent progress in using metal-organic cages to achieve separations, with discussion of the many methods of using them in this context. Challenges and potential future developments are also discussed.

Synthesis of Chiral Helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes and Their Enantioselective Recognition Towards Chiral Guests Containing Aminoindan Groups

Starting from the enantiopure precursors, a pair of chiral macrocyclic arenes named helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes were conveniently synthesized. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the enantiomeric macrocyclic arenes exhibited mirror images, and the X-ray single crystal structures confirmed their absolute conformations as well. Moreover, the macrocyclic arenes showed strong complexation with secondary ammonium and primary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups. In particular, the chiral macrocyclic arenes exhibited enantioselective recognition ability towards the chiral secondary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups with an enantioselective ratio up to 3.89.
