Probing and Manipulating Noncovalent Interactions in Functional Polymeric Systems

Noncovalent interactions, which usually feature tunable strength, reversibility, and environmental adaptability, have been recognized as driving forces in a variety of biological and chemical processes, contributing to the recognition between molecules, the formation of molecule clusters, and the establishment of complex structures of macromolecules. The marriage of noncovalent interactions and conventional covalent polymers offers the systems novel mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, which are highly dependent on the binding mechanisms of the noncovalent interactions that can be illuminated via quantification. This review systematically discusses the nanomechanical characterization of typical noncovalent interactions in polymeric systems, mainly through direct force measurements at microscopic, nanoscopic, and molecular levels, which provide quantitative information (e.g., ranges, strengths, and dynamics) on the binding behaviors. The fundamental understandings of intermolecular and interfacial interactions are then correlated to the macroscopic performances of a series of noncovalently bonded polymers, whose functions (e.g., stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing capacity, universal adhesiveness) can be customized through the manipulation of the noncovalent interactions, providing insights into the rational design of advanced materials with applications in biomedical, energy, environmental, and other engineering fields.

Supramolecular Organic Frameworks: Exploring Water-Soluble, Regular Nanopores for Biomedical Applications

In past decades, regular porous architectures have received a great amount of attention because of their versatile functions and applications derived from their efficient adsorption of various guests. However, most reported porous architectures exist only in the solid state. Therefore, their applications as biomaterials may face several challenges, such as phase separation, slow degradation, and long-term accumulation in the body. This Account summarizes our efforts with respect to the development and biomedical applications of water-soluble 3D diamondoid supramolecular organic frameworks (dSOFs), a family of supramolecular polymers that possess intrinsic regular nanoscale porosity.dSOFs have been constructed from tetratopic components and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) through hydrophobically driven encapsulation by CB[8] for intermolecular dimers formed by peripheral aromatic subunits of the tetratopic components in water. All dSOFs exhibit porosity regularity or periodicity in aqueous solution, which is confirmed by solution-phase synchrotron SAXS and XRD experiments. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) reveals that their sizes range from 50 to 150 nm, depending on the concentrations of the components. As nonequilibrium supramolecular architectures, dSOFs can maintain their nanoscale sizes at micromolar concentrations for dozens of hours. Their diamondoid pores have aperture sizes ranging from 2.1 to 3.6 nm, whereas their water solubility and porosity regularity allow them to rapidly include discrete guests driven by ion-pair electrostatic attraction, hydrophobicity, or a combination of the two interactions. The guests may be small molecule or large macromolecular drugs, photodynamic agents (PDAs), or DNA.The rapid inclusion of bioactive guests into dSOFs has led to two important biofunctions. The first is to function as antidotes through including residual drugs. For heparins, the inclusion results in full neutralization of their anticoagulant activity. For clinically used porphyrin PDAs, the inclusion can alleviate their long-term posttreatment phototoxicity but does not reduce their photodynamic efficacy. The second is to function as in situ loading carriers for the intracellular delivery of antitumor drugs or DNA. Their nanoscale sizes bring out their ability to overcome the multidrug resistance of tumor cells, which leads to a remarkable enhancement of the bioactivity of the included drugs. By conjugating aldoxorubicin to tetrahedral components, albumin-mimicking prodrugs have also been constructed, which conspicuously improves the efficacy of aldoxorubicin toward multi-drug-resistant tumors through the delivery of the frameworks. As new supramolecular drugs and carriers, dSOFs are generally biocompatible. Thus, further efforts might lead to medical benefits in the future.

Noncovalently Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Reinforced by Well-Designed In Situ-Formed Nanofillers

Noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials generally exhibit lower mechanical robustness than traditional polymeric materials. Therefore, it is important to improve the mechanical properties of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials using an efficient and generalized approach. In this Perspective, we systematically summarized the recent development of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced by in situ-formed nanofillers. The synergy of high-density noncovalent interactions and in situ-formed rigid nanofillers provided an effective means for the fabrication of noncovalently cross-linked plastics with high mechanical strength. The design of in situ-formed tough nanofillers, which could deform and dissociate, endowed the noncovalently cross-linked hydrogels and elastomers with high toughness, excellent stretchability, elasticity, damage resistance, and damage tolerance. Benefiting from the well-designed in situ-formed nanofillers, these noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials with enhanced mechanical strength still exhibited satisfactory healing, recycling, and reprocessing properties. Outlooks were provided to envision the remaining challenges to the further development and practical application of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced with in situ-formed nanofillers.

Understanding of supramolecular solution polymerization and interfacial polymerization via forming multiple hydrogen bonds: a computer simulation study

By employing dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations combined with stochastic polymerization models, we have conducted a detailed simulation study of supramolecular solution polymerization as well as interfacial polymerization employing a coarse-grained model which is closer to the real monomer structure. By adding bending angle potentials to coarse-grained models representing supramolecular reactive monomers, we achieved monomer model simulations for different kinds of multiple hydrogen bonds. Our simulation results indicated that for the interfacial polymerization system, the volume of the monomer caused a strong steric hindrance effect, which in turn led to a low average degree of polymerization of the product. Therefore, by appropriately reducing the volume of the reaction monomer (corresponding to different confinement ascribed to the multiple hydrogen bonds), the average polymerization degree, the degree of reaction and the polymerization rate of the monomer can be effectively improved. For the solution polymerization system and the interfacial polymerization system, a certain proportion of rigid monomers and flexible monomers (60% rigid monomers and 40% flexible monomers) are mixed. High molecular weight products can thus be obtained via the polymerization reaction. The simulation strategy proposed in this study can not only provide theoretical guidance for better design of new supramolecular systems, but also provide ideas for the further synthesis of higher molecular weight supramolecular polymers.

An AB2 -Type Hyperbranched Supramolecular Polymer Based on Calix[4]pyrrole Anion Recognition: Construction, Stimuli-Responsiveness, and Morphology Tuning

An AB₂ -type monomer comprised of a calix[4]pyrrole skeleton and alternating bis-carboxylate units is reported and used for the construction of a novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer based on anion recognition ability of calix[4]pyrrole. ¹ H-, DOSY-NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and dynamic light scattering techniques are used for the characterization of the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer exhibiting thermo-, pH-, and chemical responsiveness, as well as concentration dependent morphology tune as inferred from electron microscopy analyses. The present study enriches the field of supramolecular polymers with a new construction motif, building block, and provides a simple approach for the fabrication of smart polymer material with multi-responsiveness and -morphologies. Mechanically interlocked polymers based on rotaxanes

The nature of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) has continued to encourage researchers to design and construct a variety of high-performance materials. Introducing mechanically interlocked structures into polymers has led to novel polymeric materials, called mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs). Rotaxane-based MIPs are an important class, where the mechanically interlocked characteristic retains a high degree of structural freedom and mobility of their components, such as the rotation and sliding motions of rotaxane units. Therefore, these MIP materials are known to possess a unique set of properties, including mechanical robustness, adaptability and responsiveness, which endow them with potential applications in many emerging fields, such as protective materials, intelligent actuators, and mechanisorption. In this review, we outline the synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and application explorations of various polyrotaxanes, including linear polyrotaxanes, polyrotaxane networks, and rotaxane dendrimers.

Understanding nonlinear composition dependency of enantioselectivity in chiral separation using mixed micelle

HYPOTHESIS

Mixtures of chiral and achiral building blocks of supramolecules exhibit interesting cooperative phenomena, indicated by the nonlinear composition dependence of the chiral properties. However, the nonlinear composition dependence of the enantioselectivity of mixed micelles is not well understood. It was hypothesized that in-depth understanding can be achieved by carefully investigating the composition dependence of the properties.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, the nonlinear composition dependence of the enantioselectivity was found for the mixed micelle of achiral and chiralN-acyl amino acids by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). Capillary electrophoresis, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, surface tension measurement, and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to investigate the mechanisms.

FINDINGS

Four mechanisms that could be causing the nonlinearity were investigated: (i) synergistic and antagonistic interactions of the surfactants; (ii) the chiral transfer from chiral to achiral surfactant; (iii) differences in the retention factor; and (iv) cooperative chiral recognition of the chiral and achiral surfactant. The investigation of the composition dependency of critical micelle concentration (CMC) and molar circular dichroism revealed that the effect of (i) and (ii) was negligibly small. The newly derived equations for (iii) and (iv) revealed that (iii) and (iv) have a major or medium effect on the nonlinear enantioselectivity.

Harmonizing Topological Features of Self-Assembled Fibers by Rosette-Mediated Random Supramolecular Copolymerization and Self-Sorting of Monomers by Photo-Cross-Linking

Random copolymerization is an effective approach to synthesize the desired polymers by harmonizing distinct properties of different monomers. For supramolecular polymers in which monomer binding is inherently dynamic, it is difficult to achieve random copolymerization of monomers with distinct molecular structures and properties due to an enthalpic advantage upon self-recognition (self-sorting). Herein, we demonstrate an example of thermodynamically controlled random supramolecular copolymerization of two monomers functionalized with barbituric acid via the formation of six-membered hydrogen-bonded rosette intermediates to exhibit structural harmonization of the two main-chain motifs, i.e., intrinsically curved and linear motifs. One monomer based on naphthalene chromophore exclusively forms toroidal fibers, whereas another one bearing additional photoreactive diacetylene moiety affords linearly elongated fibers. Supramolecular copolymerization of the two monomers is achieved by cooling hot monomer mixtures in a nonpolar solvent, which results in the formation of thermodynamically stable spirally folded yet elongated fibers. Atomic force microscopic observations and theoretical simulations of the experimental data obtained by absorption spectroscopy reveal the homopolymerization of the diacetylene-functionalized monomer in the high-temperature region, followed by the incorporation of the naphthalene monomer in the medium-temperature region to form supramolecular copolymers with random monomer sequence. Finally, we demonstrate that the random copolymerization process can be switched to a narcissistically self-sorting one by deactivating monomer exchange through the photo-cross-linking of the diacetylene-functionalized monomers.

Classifying soft self-assembled materials via unsupervised machine learning of defects

Unlike molecular crystals, soft self-assembled fibers, micelles, vesicles, etc., exhibit a certain order in the arrangement of their constitutive monomers but also high structural dynamicity and variability. Defects and disordered local domains that continuously form-and-repair in their structures impart to such materials unique adaptive and dynamical properties, which make them, e.g., capable to communicate with each other. However, objective criteria to compare such complex dynamical features and to classify soft supramolecular materials are non-trivial to attain. Here we show a data-driven workflow allowing us to achieve this goal. Building on unsupervised clustering of Smooth Overlap of Atomic Position (SOAP) data obtained from equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we can compare a variety of soft supramolecular assemblies via a robust SOAP metric. This provides us with a data-driven "defectometer" to classify different types of supramolecular materials based on the structural dynamics of the ordered/disordered local molecular environments that statistically emerge within them.

A Supramolecular Hydrogel Based on Copolymers of Acrylic Acid and Maleic Anhydride Derivatives with Terpyridine Motifs

A kind of terpyridine derivative (NH₂-Tpy) in which the amino was incorporated by a short alkyl chain was synthesized. Through grafting of terpyridine units into the hydrophilic copolymers of maleic anhydride and acrylic acid PAAMa via the reaction of the amino groups in NH₂-Tpy and the maleic anhydride units, a series of gelator polymers—P1, P2, and P3—containing different contents of terpyridine units was synthesized. Under coordination of Ni²⁺ and terpyridine ligands in linear polymers, the supramolecular hydrogels H1, H2, and H3 with different cross-linking degrees were prepared. The linear polymers P1–P3 had a strong absorption peak at about 290 nm in the UV-vis spectra which was attributed to π–π* transition, and there was a new peak at about 335 nm led by the metal-to-ligands charge transfer (MLCT) when coordinated with Ni²⁺ ions. According to the rheological behaviors, the storage modulus (G′) was larger than the loss modulus (G′′). These hydrogels showed typical gel-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels exceeded 10%, and the hydrogels showed liquid-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels was less than 7%. The results of the micromorphological investigation of the xerogels from SEM illustrated the metal–terpyridine coordination cross-linking could have an important influence on the microstructures of the resulting hydrogels. Furthermore, these hydrogels based on supramolecular cross-links exhibited reversible solution–gel transition at different environmental temperatures. At the same time, the equilibrium swelling of the supramolecular hydrogels was 8.0–12.3 g/g, which increased with the decrease in the content of the terpyridine units in the resulting hydrogels.

Expanding the Scope of Metastable Species in Hydrogen Bonding‐Directed Supramolecular Polymerization

We reveal unique hydrogen (H‐) bonding patterns and exploit them to control the kinetics, pathways and length of supramolecular polymers (SPs). New bisamide‐containing monomers were designed to elucidate the role of competing intra‐ vs. intermolecular H‐bonding interactions on the kinetics of supramolecular polymerization (SP). Remarkably, two polymerization‐inactive metastable states were discovered. Contrary to previous examples, the commonly assumed intramolecularly H‐bonded monomer does not evolve into intermolecularly H‐bonded SPs via ring opening, but rather forms a metastable dimer. In this dimer, all H‐bonding sites are saturated, either intra‐ or intermolecularly, hampering elongation. The dimers exhibit an advantageous preorganization, which upon opening of the intramolecular portion of the H‐bonding motif facilitates SP in a consecutive process. The retardation of spontaneous self‐assembly as a result of two metastable states enables length control in SP by seed‐mediated growth.

A Strategy Based on Aggregation-Induced Ratiometric Emission to Differentiate Molecular Weight of Supramolecular Polymers

Molecular weight has an important bearing on the properties of supramolecular polymers. However, the intuitive differentiation of the molecular weight of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Given this situation, establishing a reliable relationship between fluorescence properties and molecular weight may be a promising strategy. Herein, we prepared a supramolecular monomer M1 with aggregation-induced ratiometric emission characteristics. With the increasing M1 concentration (0.100-100 mM), the average degree of polymerization (DP_DOSY ) rose from 1.00 to 293. Meanwhile, the color changed from dark blue to cyan, finally to yellow-green in the same concentration range. Hence, the intuitive relationship between DP_DOSY and fluorescence colors was constructed, allowing the visual differentiation of molecular weight. Moreover, the fluorescence color could be regulated by introducing a competitive molecule to induce the depolymerization of supramolecular polymers.

Self-Healing Materials-Based Electronic Skin: Mechanism, Development and Applications

Electronic skin (e-skin) has brought us great convenience and revolutionized our way of life. However, due to physical or chemical aging and damage, they will inevitably be degraded gradually with practical operation. The emergence of self-healing materials enables e-skins to achieve repairment of cracks and restoration of mechanical function by themselves, meeting the requirements of the era for building durable and self-healing electronic devices. This work reviews the current development of self-healing e-skins with various application scenarios, including motion sensor, human–machine interaction and soft robots. The new application fields and present challenges are discussed; meanwhile, thinkable strategies and prospects of future potential applications are conferenced.

Supramolecular polymer gels: from construction methods to functionality

Supramolecular polymer gels (SPGs) are precisely designed gels brought together by noncovalent interactions to form three-dimensional network structures of polymers. SPGs combine the merits of supramolecular polymers and gels, such as stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing, and self-adaptation, which endows SPGs with potential application value in the fields of biomaterials, etc. Recently, much effort has been made to design new SPGs and related materials with high performance. Herein, we review the research endeavor and future directions of SPGs depending on the construction methods, topological structures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functionality. We hope that the review will provide reference values for the researchers working in supramolecular chemistry and gels.

An Overview of Self-Healable Polymers and Recent Advances in the Field

The search for materials with better performance, longer service life, lower environmental impact, and lower overall cost is at the forefront of polymer science and material engineering. This has led to the development of self-healing polymers with a range of healing mechanisms including capsular-based, vascular, and intrinsic self-healing polymers. The development of self-healable systems has been inspired by the healing of biological systems such as skin wound healing and broken bone reconstruction. The goal of using self-healing polymers in various applications is to extend the service life of polymers without the need for replacement or human intervention especially in restricted access areas such as underwater/underground piping where inspection, intervention, and maintenance are very difficult. Through an industrial and scholarly lens, this paper provides (a) an overview of self-healing polymers, (b) classification of different self-healing polymers and polymer-based composites, (c) mechanical, thermal, and electrical analysis characterization, (d) applications in coating, composites, and electronics, (e) modeling and simulation, and (f) recent development in the past 20 years . This review highlights the importance of healable polymers for an economically and environmentally sustainable future, the most recent advances in the field, and current limitations in fabrication, manufacturing, and performance. Hybrid Macrocyclic Polymers: Self-Assembly Containing Cucurbit[m]uril-pillar[n]arene

Supramolecular self-assembly by hybrid macrocycles containing both cucurbit[m]uril (CB[m]) and pillar[n]arene was discussed and summarized in this review. Due to different solubility, diverse-sized cavities, and various driving forces in recognizing guests, the role of CB[m] and pillar[n]arene in such hybrid macrocyclic systems could switch between competitor in capturing specialized guests, and cooperator for building advanced hybridized macrocycles, by controlling their characteristics in host–guest inclusions. Furthermore, both CB[m] and pillar[n]arene were employed for fabricating advanced supramolecular self-assemblies such as mechanically interlocked molecules and supramolecular polymers. In those self-assemblies, CB[m] and pillar[n]arene played significant roles in, e.g., microreactor for catalyzing particular reactions to bridge different small pieces together, molecular “joint” to connect different monomers into larger assemblies, and “stabilizer” in accommodating the guest molecules to adopt a favorite structure geometry ready for assembling.

Molecular communications in complex systems of dynamic supramolecular polymers

Supramolecular polymers are composed of monomers that self-assemble non-covalently, generating distributions of monodimensional fibres in continuous communication with each other and with the surrounding solution. Fibres, exchanging molecular species, and external environment constitute a sole complex system, which intrinsic dynamics is hard to elucidate. Here we report coarse-grained molecular simulations that allow studying supramolecular polymers at the thermodynamic equilibrium, explicitly showing the complex nature of these systems, which are composed of exquisitely dynamic molecular entities. Detailed studies of molecular exchange provide insights into key factors controlling how assemblies communicate with each other, defining the equilibrium dynamics of the system. Using minimalistic and finer chemically relevant molecular models, we observe that a rich concerted complexity is intrinsic in such self-assembling systems. This offers a new dynamic and probabilistic (rather than structural) picture of supramolecular polymer systems, where the travelling molecular species continuously shape the assemblies that statistically emerge at the equilibrium.

The dynamic structure of supramolecular polymers is challenging to determine both in experiments and in simulations. Here the authors use coarse-grained molecular models to provide a comprehensive analysis of the molecular communication in these complex molecular systems.

Anti-cooperative Self-Assembly with Maintained Emission Regulated by Conformational and Steric Effects

Herein, we present a strategy to enable a maintained emissive behavior in the self‐assembled state by enforcing an anti‐cooperative self‐assembly involving weak intermolecular dye interactions. To achieve this goal, we designed a conformationally flexible monomer unit 1 with a central 1,3‐substituted (diphenyl)urea hydrogen bonding synthon that is tethered to two BODIPY dyes featuring sterically bulky trialkoxybenzene substituents at the meso‐position. The competition between attractive forces (H‐bonding and aromatic interactions) and destabilizing effects (steric and competing conformational effects) limits the assembly, halting the supramolecular growth at the stage of small oligomers. Given the presence of weak dye–dye interactions, the emission properties of molecularly dissolved 1 are negligibly affected upon aggregation. Our findings contribute to broadening the scope of emissive supramolecular assemblies and controlled supramolecular polymerization.

Supramolecular Polymerization at Interfaces

Supramolecular polymers, originating from the interplay between polymer science and supramolecular chemistry, have attracted increasing interest in the scientific and industrial communities. To date, most supramolecular polymers are constructed in homogeneous solutions. Supramolecular polymerization normally takes place spontaneously in solutions, thus creating challenges in fabricating supramolecular polymers in a controlled manner. By combining supramolecular polymerization and interfacial polymerization, supramolecular polymerization can be transferred from homogeneous solutions to interfaces, which allows for the controlled production of supramolecular polymers. In this Perspective, we will summarize recent progress and the advantages in supramolecular polymerization at solid-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces. Meanwhile, current challenges and opportunities in the field of supramolecular polymerization at interfaces are proposed and discussed. It is anticipated that this Perspective will inspire supramolecular polymerization at interfaces and facilitate the construction of supramolecular polymeric materials with diverse architectures and tailor-made functions.

Macrocycle-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, generated by connecting monomers through noncovalent interactions, have received considerable attention over the past years, as they provide versatile platforms for developing diverse aesthetically pleasing polymeric structures with promising applications in a variety of fields, such as medicine, catalysis, and sensing. In the development of supramolecular polymers, macrocyclic hosts play a very important role. Benefiting from their abundant host-guest chemistry and self-assembly characteristics, macrocycles themselves or their host-guest complexes can self-assemble to form well-ordered supramolecular polymeric architectures including pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes. The integration of these topological structures into supramolecular polymeric materials also imbues them with some unforeseen functions. Current interest in macrocycle-based supramolecular polymers is mostly focused on the development of supramolecular soft materials in solution or gel-state, in which the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions endows supramolecular polymers with a wealth of "smart" properties, such as multiresponsiveness and self-repair capabilities. While preparation of macrocycle-derived supramolecular polymers in the solid state is a relatively challenging but intriguing prospect, they are an important part of the field of supramolecular polymers. On one hand, the construction of macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers enables us to obtain new materials with novel properties and functions such as mechano-responsiveness. On the other hand, the molecular structures and arrangements in these materials are well-identified by X-ray crystallography techniques, offering a direct visual representation of the supramolecular polymerization process. The analysis of the role of noncovalent interactions in these architectures allows us to design more sophisticated and elegant supramolecular polymers in a highly rationalized and controllable manner. This Account serves to summarize the research progress on macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers (MSSPs), including the contributions toward this field made by our group. For constructing MSSPs, the key point is to control noncovalent interactions. Thus, in this Account, we primarily classify these MSSPs by different noncovalent interactions involved to connect the monomers, including metal-ligand interactions, host-guest interactions, π···π stacking, and halogen bonding. These noncovalent interactions are highly associated with the structures and functions of the resultant MSSPs. For instance, using metal-ligand interactions as driving forces, metal clusters can be introduced in MSSPs which afford systems with solid-state luminescence or proton conduction properties; supramolecular polymerization using macrocycle-based host-guest interactions can modulate the molecular arrangement of some specific molecules in the solid state, which further influences their solid-state properties; π···π stacking interactions and halogen bonding give chemists more choice to design MSSPs with various elements. The role of macrocyclic hosts in MSSPs is also revealed in these descriptions. Finally, the remaining challenges are identified for further development of future prospects. We hope that this Account can inspire new discoveries in the realm of supramolecular functional systems and offer new opportunities for the construction of supramolecular architectures and solid-state materials.

Dynamic Control of a Multistate Chiral Supramolecular Polymer in Water

Natural systems transfer chiral information across multiple length scales through dynamic supramolecular interaction to accomplish various functions. Inspired by nature, many exquisite artificial supramolecular systems have been developed, in which controlling the supramolecular chirality holds the key to completing specific tasks. However, to achieve precise and non-invasive control and modulation of chirality in these systems remains challenging. As a non-invasive stimulus, light can be used to remotely control the chirality with high spatiotemporal precision. In contrast to common molecular switches, a synthetic molecular motor can act as a multistate chiroptical switch with unidirectional rotation, offering major potential to regulate more complex functions. Here, we present a light-driven molecular motor-based supramolecular polymer, in which the intrinsic chirality is transferred to the nanofibers, and the rotation of molecular motors governs the chirality and morphology of the supramolecular polymer. The resulting supramolecular polymer also exhibits light-controlled multistate aggregation-induced emission. These findings present a photochemically tunable multistate dynamic supramolecular system in water and pave the way for developing molecular motor-driven chiroptical materials.

Self-Healing Systems in Silicon Anodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Self-healing is the capability of materials to repair themselves after the damage has occurred, usually through the interaction between molecules or chains. Physical and chemical processes are applied for the preparation of self-healing systems. There are different approaches for these systems, such as heterogeneous systems, shape memory effects, hydrogen bonding or covalent–bond interaction, diffusion, and flow dynamics. Self-healing mechanisms can occur in particular through heat and light exposure or through reconnection without a direct effect. The applications of these systems display an increasing trend in both the R&D and industry sectors. Moreover, self-healing systems and their energy storage applications are currently gaining great importance. This review aims to provide general information on recent developments in self-healing materials and their battery applications given the critical importance of self-healing systems for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the first part of the review, an introduction about self-healing mechanisms and design strategies for self-healing materials is given. Then, selected important healing materials in the literature for the anodes of LIBs are mentioned in the second part. The results and future perspectives are stated in the conclusion section.

Supramolecular Biomaterials in the Netherlands

Synthetically designed biomaterials strive to recapitulate and mimic the complex environment of natural systems. Using natural materials as a guide, the ability to create high performance biomaterials that control cell fate, and support the next generation of cell and tissue-based therapeutics, is starting to emerge. Supramolecular chemistry takes inspiration from the wealth of non-covalent interactions found in natural materials that are inherently complex, and using the skills of synthetic and polymer chemistry, recreates simple systems to imitate their features. Within the past decade, supramolecular biomaterials have shown utility in tissue engineering and the progress predicts a bright future. On this 30th anniversary of the Netherlands Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering society, we will briefly recount the state of supramolecular biomaterials in the Dutch academic and industrial research and development context. This review will provide the background, recent advances, industrial successes and challenges, as well as future directions of the field, as we see it. Throughout this work, we notice the intricate interplay between simplicity and complexity in creating more advanced solutions. We hope that the interplay and juxtaposition between these two forces can propel the field forward.

Functional Nano-Objects by Electrostatic Self-Assembly: Structure, Switching, and Photocatalysis

The design of functional nano-objects by electrostatic self-assembly in solution signifies an emerging field with great potential. More specifically, the targeted combination of electrostatic interaction with other effects and interactions, such as the positioning of charges on stiff building blocks, the use of additional amphiphilic, π−π stacking building blocks, or polyelectrolytes with certain architectures, have recently promulgated electrostatic self-assembly to a principle for versatile defined structure formation. A large variety of architectures from spheres over rods and hollow spheres to networks in the size range of a few tenths to a few hundred nanometers can be formed. This review discusses the state-of-the-art of different approaches of nano-object formation by electrostatic self-assembly against the backdrop of corresponding solid materials and assemblies formed by other non-covalent interactions. In this regard, particularly promising is the facile formation of triggerable structures, i.e. size and shape switching through light, as well as the use of electrostatically assembled nano-objects for improved photocatalysis and the possible solar energy conversion in the future. Lately, this new field is eliciting an increasing amount of understanding; insights and limitations thereof are addressed in this article. Special emphasis is placed on the interconnection of molecular building block structures and the resulting nanoscale architecture via the key of thermodynamics.

Synthesis and Self-assembly of Benzoperylene Benzimidazoles: Tunable Morphology with Aggregation Induced Enhanced Emission

Benzoperylene benzimidazoles ( BPBIs ) based π-systems are synthesized and their self-assembly in both non-polar and polar solvents is investigated. Due to the presence of donor and acceptor functional groups,  BPBIs  absorb light up to 600 nm and display red fluorescence (575-800 nm). Depending on the solvent and side chain,  BPBIs  self-assemble into various nanostructures such as nanoribbons, nanorods, nanofibers and nanoparticles. Notably, these ordered nanostructures are formed by  BPBIs  in both polar and non-polar solvents   without the aid of hydrogen bonding and amphiphilic interactions due to the presence of a large rigid π-system. Interestingly,  BPBIs  follow a weakly cooperative mechanism during the self-assembly. Moreover,  BPBIs  show aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in all the self-assembled nanostructures which is not common for rigid π-systems.

Visualizing molecular weights differences in supramolecular polymers

Molecular weight determinations play a vital role in the characterization of supramolecular polymers. They are essential to assessing the degree of polymerization, which in turn can have a significant impact on the properties of the polymer. While numerous characterization methods have been developed to estimate the number-average molecular weight (M_n) of supramolecular polymers, a simple visual method could provide advantages in terms of ease of use. We have now developed a system wherein differences in the fluorescent signature, including changes in color, allow variations in the M_n of an anion-responsive supramolecular polymer [M1·Zn(OTf)₂]_n to be readily monitored. The present visual differentiation strategy provides a tool that may be used to characterize supramolecular polymers.

Issues of molecular weight determination have been central to the development of supramolecular polymer chemistry. Whereas relationships between concentration and optical features are established for well-behaved absorptive and emissive species, for most supramolecular polymeric systems no simple correlation exists between optical performance and number-average molecular weight (M_n). As such, the M_n of supramolecular polymers have to be inferred from various measurements. Herein, we report an anion-responsive supramolecular polymer [M1·Zn(OTf)₂]_n that exhibits monotonic changes in the fluorescence color as a function of M_n. Based on theoretical estimates, the calculated average degree of polymerization (DP_cal) increases from 16.9 to 84.5 as the monomer concentration increases from 0.08 mM to 2.00 mM. Meanwhile, the fluorescent colors of M1 + Zn(OTf)₂ solutions were found to pass from green to yellow and to orange, corresponding to a red shift in the maximum emission band (λ_max). Therefore, a relationship between DP_cal and λ_max could be established. Additionally, the anion-responsive nature of the present system meant that the extent of supramolecular polymerization could be regulated by introducing anions, with the resulting change in M_n being readily monitored via changes in the fluorescent emission features.

Recent Advances of Self-Healing Polymer Materials via Supramolecular Forces for Biomedical Applications

Noncovalent interactions can maintain the three-dimensional structures of biomacromolecules (e.g., polysaccharides and proteins) and control specific recognition in biological systems. Supramolecular chemistry was gradually developed as a result, and this led to design and application of self-healing materials. Self-healing materials have attracted attention in many fields, such as coatings, bionic materials, elastomers, and flexible electronic devices. Nevertheless, self-healing materials for biomedical applications have not been comprehensively summarized, even though many reports have been focused on specific areas. In this Review, we first introduce the different categories of supramolecular forces used in preparing self-healing materials and then describe biological applications developed in the last 5 years, including antibiofouling, smart drug/protein delivery, wound healing, electronic skin, cartilage lubrication protection, and tissue engineering scaffolds. Finally, the limitations of current biomedical applications are indicated, key design points are offered for new biological self-healing materials, and potential directions for biological applications are highlighted.

Disulfide-Mediated Reversible Polymerization toward Intrinsically Dynamic Smart Materials

The development of a dynamic chemistry toolbox to endow materials dynamic behavior has been key to the rational design of future smart materials. The rise of supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry offers many approaches to the construction of dynamic polymers and materials that can adapt, respond, repair, and recycle. Within this toolbox, the building blocks based on 1,2-dithiolanes have become an important scaffold, featuring their reversible polymerization mediated by dynamic covalent disulfide bonds, which enables a unique class of dynamic materials at the intersection of supramolecular polymers and adaptable covalent networks. This Perspective aims to explore the dynamic chemistry of 1,2-dithiolanes as a versatile structural unit for the design of smart materials by summarizing the state of the art as well as providing an overview of the fundamental challenges involved in this research area and its potential future directions.

Hierarchical self-assembly of aromatic peptide conjugates into supramolecular polymers: it takes two to tango

Supramolecular polymers are self-assembled materials displaying adaptive and responsive "life-like" behaviour which are often made of aromatic compounds capable of engaging in π-π interactions to form larger assemblies. Major advances have been made recently in controlling their mode of self-assembly, from thermodynamically-controlled isodesmic to kinetically-controlled living polymerization. Dynamic covalent chemistry has been recently implemented to generate dynamic covalent polymers which can be seen as dynamic analogues of biomacromolecules. On the other hand, peptides are readily-available and structurally-rich building blocks that can lead to secondary structures or specific functions. In this context, the past decade has seen intense research activity in studying the behaviour of aromatic-peptide conjugates through supramolecular and/or dynamic covalent chemistries. Herein, we review those impressive key achievements showcasing how aromatic- and peptide-based self-assemblies can be combined using dynamic covalent and/or supramolecular chemistry, and what it brings in terms of the structure, self-assembly pathways, and function of supramolecular and dynamic covalent polymers.

Hierarchical self-assembly into chiral nanostructures

One basic principle regulating self-assembly is associated with the asymmetry of constituent building blocks or packing models. Using asymmetry to manipulate molecular-level devices and hierarchical functional materials is a promising topic in materials sciences and supramolecular chemistry. Here, exemplified by recent major achievements in chiral hierarchical self-assembly, we show how chirality may be utilized in the design, construction and evolution of highly ordered and complex chiral nanostructures. We focus on how unique functions can be developed by the exploitation of chiral nanostructures instead of single basic units. Our perspective on the future prospects of chiral nanostructures via the hierarchical self-assembly strategy is also discussed.

Mechanically robust supramolecular polymer co-assemblies

Supramolecular polymers are formed through non-covalent, directional interactions between monomeric building blocks. The assembly of these materials is reversible, which enables functions such as healing, repair, or recycling. However, supramolecular polymers generally fail to match the mechanical properties of conventional commodity plastics. Here we demonstrate how strong, stiff, tough, and healable materials can be accessed through the combination of two metallosupramolecular polymers with complementary mechanical properties that feature the same metal-ligand complex as binding motif. Co-assembly yields materials with micro-phase separated hard and soft domains and the mechanical properties can be tailored by simply varying the ratio of the two constituents. On account of toughening and physical cross-linking effects, this approach affords materials that display higher strength, toughness, or failure strain than either metallosupramolecular polymer alone. The possibility to combine supramolecular building blocks in any ratio further permits access to compositionally graded objects with a spatially modulated mechanical behavior.
