Abstract
Uncertainty is an overarching aspect of life that is particularly pertinent to the present COVID-19 pandemic crisis; as seen by the pandemic's rapid worldwide spread, the nature and level of uncertainty have possibly increased due to the possible disconnects across national borders. The entire economy, especially the tourism industry, has been dramatically impacted by COVID-19. In the current study, we explore the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and pandemic uncertainty (PU) on inbound international tourism by using data gathered from Italy, Spain, and the United States for the years 1995-2021. Using the Quantile on Quantile (QQ) approach, the study confirms that EPU and PU negatively affected inbound tourism in all states. Wavelet-based Granger causality further reveals bi-directional causality running from EPU to inbound tourism and unidirectional causality from PU to inbound tourism in the long run. The overall findings show that COVID-19 has had a strong negative effect on tourism. So resilient skills are required to restore a sustainable tourism industry.

Abstract
The COVID-19 (SARS-Cov-2) pandemic has put a strain on healthcare systems around the world from December 2019 in China, and then rapidly spreading worldwide. The impact of the virus on the entire population and its differential effect on various age groups was unknown at the outset, specifically its severity in elders, children or those living with other comorbidities, thus defining the syndemic, rather than pandemic, character of the infection. The effort of clinicians was initially to organize differential paths to isolate cases or contacts. This impacted the maternal-neonatal care adding an additional burden to this dyad and raising several questions. Can SARS-Cov-2 infection in the first days of life put the health of the newborn at risk? Could the separation of a healthy newborn from an infected mother create further physical and psychological health problems in the dyad? The rapid and massive research effort in these three years of the pandemic has provided wide answers to these initial questions. In this review, we report epidemiological data, clinical features, complications, and management of the neonates affected by SARS-Cov-2 infection.

Abstract
The operation of a bus rapid transit (BRT) station platform is a key factor that affects BRT system performance. As waiting passengers occupy more platform space than circulating passengers, evaluation of their distribution across the platform is important. Public transport systems have been affected by the global pandemic Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This may have affected the waiting passenger distribution on BRT platform space. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the impact of COVID-19 on waiting passenger distribution on a platform during the peak period at an important station on the BRT system in Brisbane, Australia. Manual data collection was carried out before COVID-19 and during COVID-19. Waiting passenger counts in each case were evaluated separately to identify variation across the platform. The total waiting passenger count on the platform at a given time reduced significantly during COVID-19. To compare the two cases, data sets were normalized, and statistical analysis performed. The test results indicated that the distribution of waiting passengers during COVID-19 has significantly changed, bringing more waiting passengers into the platform center than the two ends, whereas before COVID-19, more waiting passengers were observed at the upstream half of the platform. There was also greater temporal variation across the whole platform during COVID-19. These findings were used to postulate the reasons behind the changes resulting from COVID-19, which affected platform operation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS High follow-up is critical in randomized clinical trials. We developed novel approaches to modify in-person visits and complete follow-up during COVID-19. Since these strategies are broadly applicable to circumstances wherein follow-up is difficult, they may help in contingency planning. The objective of this article is to develop and evaluate new approaches to replace detailed, in-person study visits for two trials focused on preventing diabetic foot complications. METHODS A quasi-experimental pre-post design compared approaches for follow-up during COVID-19 to approaches pre-COVID-19. Study subjects were outpatients at two Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Following a research "hold," research resumed in February 2021 for Self-monitoring, Thermometry and Educating Patients for Ulcer Prevention (STEP UP) (n = 241), which focused on preventing recurrent foot ulcers, and in April 2021 for Preventing Amputation by Tailored Risk-based Intervention to Optimize Therapy (PATRIOT) (n = 406), which focused on preventing pre-ulcerative and ulcerative lesions. To complete data collection, we shortened visits, focused on primary and secondary outcomes, and conducted virtual visits when appropriate. For STEP UP, we created a 20-min assessment process that could be administered by phone. Since PATRIOT required plantar photographs to assess foot lesions, we conducted short face-to-face visits. We explored differences and assessed proportion completing visit, visit completion/100 person-months and compared COVID-19 to pre- COVID-19 using unadjusted risk ratios, incidence rate ratios, all with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Finally, we report time-to-visit curves. RESULTS In both studies, participants whose follow-up concluded pre- COVID-19 seemed older than those whose follow-up concluded during COVID-19 (PATRIOT: 68.0 (67.2, 68.9) versus 65.2 years (61.9, 68.5); STEP UP: 67.5 (66.2, 68.9) versus 65.3 (63.3, 67.3)). For STEP UP, we completed 91 visits pre- COVID-19 (37.8% (31.6%, 44.2%)) and 63 visits during COVID-19 (78.8% (68.2%, 87.1%)). This was over 1309 person-months pre-COVID-19, and over 208.8 person-months during COVID-19; the visit completion rate/100 person-months were: pre-COVID-19 7.0 (5.6, 8.5), COVID-19 30.2 (23.2, 38.6); risk ratio: 2.1 (1.7, 2.5); and incidence rate ratio 4.3 (3.1, 5.9). Similarly, for PATRIOT, we completed 316 visits pre-COVID-19 (77.8% (73.5%, 81.8%)) and 27 assessments during COVID-19 (84.4% (67.2%, 94.7%)). This was over 1192.7 person-months pre-COVID-19 and 39.3 person-months during COVID-19. The visit completion rate/100 person-months in PATRIOT were: pre-COVID-19 2.7 (2.4, 3.0), COVID-19 6.9 (4.5, 10); risk ratio 1.1 (0.9, 1.3); incidence rate ratio 2.6 (1.8, 3.8). For both studies, the follow-up curves began separating at < 2 months. CONCLUSIONS We achieved higher completion rates during COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19 by modifying visits and focusing on primary and secondary outcomes. These strategies prevent excessive missing data, support more valid conclusions, and improve efficiency. They may provide important alternative strategies to achieving higher follow-up in randomized clinical trials.

Abstract
Lacking a federal policy to control the spread of COVID-19, state governors ordered lockdowns and mask mandates, at different times, generating a massive natural experiment. The authors exploit this natural experiment to address four issues: (1) Were lockdowns effective in reducing infections? (2) What were the costs to consumers? (3) Did lockdowns increase (signaling effect) or reduce (substitution effect) consumers' mask adoption? (4) Did governors' decisions depend on medical science or nonmedical drivers? Analyses via difference-in-differences and generalized synthetic control methods indicate that lockdowns causally reduced infections. Although lockdowns reduced infections by 480 per million consumers per day (equivalent to a reduction of 56%), they reduced customer satisfaction by 2.2%, consumer spending by 7.5%, and gross domestic product by 5.4% and significantly increased unemployment by 2% per average state by the end of the observation period. A counterfactual analysis shows that a nationwide lockdown on March 15, 2020, would have reduced total cases by 60%, whereas the absence of any state lockdowns would have resulted in five times more cases by April 30. The average cost of reducing the number of cases by one new infection was about $28,000 in lower gross domestic product.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to the novel coronavirus has become the highest priority that threatens human health. This situation demands widespread vaccination and the innovation of new therapeutic methods. Despite drug discoveries, the need for approving new medicaments is felt because of adverse effects and lack of efficacy. Several medicinal plants including Viola odorata L. are recommended in traditional Persian medicine for alleviating respiratory infection symptoms. Recent studies showed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-asthmatic, antitussive, analgesic, and antibacterial activities of sweet violet. These enhance respiratory functions, reduce pulmonary inflammation, and decline mucous membrane edema. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sweet violet syrup in alleviating the manifestations of COVID-19 infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS A randomized parallel-group double-blind controlled trial was conducted at Al-Zahra general hospital, Isfahan, Iran. A total of 108 outpatients were enrolled in the study. The patients were randomly allocated to intervention and placebo groups, with 54 patients in each group. The allocation was concealed using sealed opaque envelopes. The intervention group received violet syrup and the control group received placebo syrup, an add-on to the conventional treatment. The outcomes were COVID-19 manifestations, such as dyspnea, cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea, considered as outcomes of the study and were evaluated twice using a visual analog scale before the intervention and after 7 days, at the end of the study. Patients were followed daily by phone calls to monitor proper drug consumption and possible side effects. RESULTS No significant difference was between groups regarding demographic characteristics and vital signs before and after the treatment. Although all symptoms have improved significantly in both groups, patients who received violet syrup recovered faster and the mean severity scores of cough (P = 0.025), myalgia (P = 0.036), headache (P = 0.037), and diarrhea (P = 0.044) decreased greater in comparison to control group. CONCLUSION This study, the first clinical trial on the effectiveness of Viola odorata on SARS-CoV-2 patients, showed that Viola odorata L. effectively controls prevalent manifestations of COVID-19 including cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea. Regarding this survey, the violet syrup can be mentioned as a complementary treatment for viral influenza-like infections in which cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea are prominent.

Abstract
Introduction approximately 15% of COVID-19 patients develop symptoms necessitating admission. From 2020 to 2022, Mashonaland West Province had an institutional case fatality rate of 23% against a national rate of 7%. Therefore, we evaluated the COVID-19 admissions in the province to determine the factors associated with COVID-19 mortality. Methods we conducted an analytical cross-sectional study based on secondary data from isolation centers across the province using all 672 death audit forms and patient records. We obtained data on patient demographics, signs and symptoms, clinical management and oxygen therapy administered, among other things. Data were entered into an electronic form and imported into Epi-info 7 for analysis bivariate and multivariate conducted. Results: we found that being an older man, aOR 1.04 (1.03-1.05), who had diabetes aOR 6.0 (95% CI: 3.8-9.2) and hypertension aOR 4.5 (95% CI: 2.8-6.5) were independent risk factors. Patients put on dexamethasone aOR 2.4 (95% CI: 1.6-3.4) and heparin/clexane aOR 1.6 (95% CI: 1.1-2.2) had a higher mortality risk. However, vitamin C aOR 0.48 (95% CI: 0.31-0.71) and oxygen therapy aOR 0.14 (95% CI: 0.10-0.19) and being pregnant aOR 0.06 (95% CI: 0.02-0.14) were protective. Conclusion: mortality risk increased in older male patients with comorbidities and with those on dexamethasone and heparin therapy. Oxygen therapy and vitamin C were protective. There is a need to conduct further study of the source of these variations in risk across patients to establish the true impact of differences in individuals' mortality.

Abstract
This study explores the influence of total and individual ESG practices and the coronavirus crisis on US firm performance (FP). A large and recent sample of 406 US firms that adopted ESG issues during 2016–2020 was used. This study uses the generalized least-squares (GLS) regression estimator, the dynamic analysis technique, and robustness tests. The results indicate that firms with heightened ESG practices have better performance measures. In most cases, the results suggest that firms with heightened environmental, social, and governance performances have better performance measures. The results suggest that the coronavirus crisis negatively affected FP measures. In addition, the analyses of the differences suggest significant distinctions in FP due to the coronavirus crisis. This study’s findings have important implications for stakeholders. Managers could benefit from the results of this examination by recognizing the status of ESG practices and FP before and during the coronavirus crisis and identifying the linkage between the fulfillment of ESG responsibilities and FP. This study provides noteworthy practical implications that could enable managers to develop strategies and policies for adopting and enhancing ESG practices to achieve the best performance. Furthermore, the results could influence trading processes as investors and financiers pursue attractive financial returns from investments in businesses concerned with ESG issues.

Abstract
Virome analysis via high-throughput sequencing (HTS) allows rapid and massive virus identification and diagnoses, expanding our focus from individual samples to the ecological distribution of viruses in agroecological landscapes. Decreases in sequencing costs combined with technological advances, such as automation and robotics, allow for efficient processing and analysis of numerous samples in plant disease clinics, tissue culture laboratories, and breeding programs. There are many opportunities for translating virome analysis to support plant health. For example, virome analysis can be employed in the development of biosecurity strategies and policies, including the implementation of virome risk assessments to support regulation and reduce the movement of infected plant material. A challenge is to identify which new viruses discovered through HTS require regulation and which can be allowed to move in germplasm and trade. On-farm management strategies can incorporate information from high-throughput surveillance, monitoring for new and known viruses across scales, to rapidly identify important agricultural viruses and understand their abundance and spread. Virome indexing programs can be used to generate clean germplasm and seed, crucial for the maintenance of seed system production and health, particularly in vegetatively propagated crops such as roots, tubers, and bananas. Virome analysis in breeding programs can provide insight into virus expression levels by generating relative abundance data, aiding in breeding cultivars resistant, or at least tolerant, to viruses. The integration of network analysis and machine learning techniques can facilitate designing and implementing management strategies, using novel forms of information to provide a scalable, replicable, and practical approach to developing management strategies for viromes. In the long run, these management strategies will be designed by generating sequence databases and building on the foundation of pre-existing knowledge about virus taxonomy, distribution, and host range. In conclusion, virome analysis will support the early adoption and implementation of integrated control strategies, impacting global markets, reducing the risk of introducing novel viruses, and limiting virus spread. The effective translation of virome analysis depends on capacity building to make benefits available globally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Coronavirus disease (a highly infectious viral disease) quickly swept across the globe in 2020, causing mortality and severe respiratory illnesses. It quickly affected businesses and publicly provided services in United Arab Emirates (UAE), imposing significant costs to society. The general population of UAE was jittery and unsure how to address the problem. The focus turned on government and Health Care Workers (HCW) to handle the pandemic. Thus, knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of HCW became critical for the treatment and isolation of COVID-19 patients. Thus, the KAP of the HCW came under scrutiny. This is study set out to answer the research question, by investigating the KAP of HCW related to COVID-19 in the UAE. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study undertaken in UAE. The focus of was on HCWs as a population. Using convenience sampling with the help of Creative Research Software, the participants were identified, and an online questionnaire (Google Forms) distributed by the author. The questionnaire was adapted from the instrument developed by Bruce and Frey. It contained questions on demographic variables, knowledge, attitudes, and practice of HCW related to COVID-19. That instrument was contextualized to the UAE society and validated. RESULTS Among the participants in the study, the majority, 90.7% (97) knew that the absence of fever did not mean there was no chance of transmission from an infected person. Further, 84.1% (90) agreed that wearing general medical face masks helps prevent one from contracting COVID-19. However, only 36.4% (39) strongly believed that wearing a well-fitting face mask was effective. In addition, only 15.9% (17) reported confidently managing patients with symptoms of COVID-19, while 54.2% (58) indicated they were afraid of contracting the virus from patients. Almost 50% of the participants noted that they avoided patients who had symptoms of the COVID-19. CONCLUSION This study revealed that the KAP for healthcare workers from UAE healthcare facilities related to COVID-19 was high. The healthcare workers were trained well and that positively affected awareness and the practice of HCW regarding the spread of the virus.

Abstract
Since COVID-19 was officially listed as a pandemic, online schooling has become a more pervasive form of learning, and cyberloafing has become a widespread behavior, even among adolescents. However, less research has explored the influencing mechanism of adolescents' cyberloafing. Based on relevant studies and the real lives of adolescents, this study aimed to examine the association between a competitive class climate and cyberloafing among adolescents, its underlying mechanism, the mediating role of perceived stress and the moderating role of self-esteem. A total of 686 adolescents were recruited to complete a set of questionnaires assessing cyberloafing, perceived stress, self-esteem, and perceived competitive class climate. The results showed that a competitive class climate was positively associated with perceived stress, and the U-shaped relationship between perceived stress and cyberloafing was significant. Perceived stress mediated the relationship between a competitive class climate and cyberloafing. Meanwhile, self-esteem moderated the U-shaped relationship between perceived stress and cyberloafing and the linear relationship between a competitive class climate and perceived stress. The results of this study indicate that the influence of a competitive class climate on individual learning behavior may be nonlinear, and proper competition can contribute to reducing individual cyberloafing.

Abstract
A fundamental basis for effective health-related policymaking of any democratic nation should be open and transparent communication between a government and its citizens, including scientists and healthcare professionals, to foster a climate of trust, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 mass vaccination campaign. Since misinformation is a leading cause of vaccine hesitancy, open data sharing through an evidence-based approach may render the communication of health strategies developed by policymakers with the public more effective, allowing misinformation and claims that are not backed by scientific evidence to be tackled. In this narrative review, we debate possible causes of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and links to the COVID-19 misinformation epidemic. We also put forward plausible solutions as recommended in the literature.

Abstract
Cutaneous manifestations related to Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) have been reported over 2 years since the pandemic began. This research aimed to review articles published in English that describe cutaneous manifestations related to COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2. A data search for case reports, original studies, and review articles from the onset of the current COVID-19 pandemic to December 31, 2022, was performed using PUBMED, Cochrane Library, ResearchGate, and Google search engines. Keywords were "coronavirus", "novel coronavirus 2019", "COVID-19", "SARS-CoV-2", and "2019-nCoV" in combination with "cutaneous", "skin" and "dermatology" The extracted data included authors, region, sex, age, number of participants with skin signs, cutaneous signs, its location, symptoms, extracutaneous/associated symptoms, suspected or confirmed status for COVID-19, timeline, and healing duration. Six authors independently reviewed the abstracts and full-texts to identify publications providing these details concerning cutaneous manifestations related to COVID-19. A total of 139 publications with full text (122 case reports, 10 case series, and 7 review articles) that reported cutaneous manifestations were identified, and reviewed from 5 continents. The most common cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 were maculopapular, followed by chilblain-like lesion, urticarial, livedoid/necrotic, vesicular, and other/non-descript rashes/skin lesions. After 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic, we can conclude that there is no pathognomonic cutaneous manifestation of COVID-19, since it can be also found in other viral infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the factors that exerted an impact on the experiences of hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 pandemic from the quality and safety perspectives. METHOD A scoping review that followed the 5 stages described by Arksey and O'Malley was used. A systematized search of original studies was conducted in 9 databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, BDENF, CINAHL, LILACS, SciELO, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The factors that exerted an impact on patients' experiences were summarized, considering the perspective of quality and patient safety in health institutions. The factors were categorized using the Content Analysis technique. RESULTS A total of 6950 studies were screened, and 32 met the eligibility criteria. The main factors that exerted an impact on the patients' experience were as follows: caregiver/family concern with the patients' well-being during hospitalization, search for alternative communication and interaction means between the patients and their family, and changes in health care organization. The restrictions inherent to the policy regarding visits and companions exerted a negative impact on the experiences, increasing the patients' feelings of loneliness and isolation. Negative impacts were also evidenced in the hospital admission and discharge process and in the limitation of treatment possibilities offered to the patients, because of contact restrictions. CONCLUSIONS The factors that exerted an impact on the patients' experiences permeate communication between professionals, patients, and family members, with implications for health care quality.

Abstract
Background Efficiently combating with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been challenging for medics, police and other service providers. To reduce human interaction, multi-robot systems are promising for performing various missions such as disinfection, monitoring, temperature measurement and delivering goods to people quarantined in prescribed homes and hotels. This paper studies the task assignment problem for multiple dispersed homogeneous robots to visit a set of prescribed hotels to perform tasks such as body temperature assessment or oropharyngeal swabs for people quarantined in the hotels while trying to minimize the robots' total operation time. Each robot can move to multiple hotels sequentially within its limited maximum operation time to provide the service. Methods The task assignment problem generalizes the multiple traveling salesman problem, which is an NP-hard problem. The main contributions of the paper are twofold: (I) a lower bound on the robots' total operation time to serve all the people has been found based on graph theory, which can be used to approximately evaluate the optimality of an assignment solution; (II) several efficient marginal-cost-based task assignment algorithms are designed to assign the hotel-serving tasks to the robots. Results In the Monte Carlo simulations where different numbers of robots need to serve the people quarantined in 30 and 90 hotels, the designed task assignment algorithms can quickly (around 30 ms) calculate near-optimal assignment solutions (within 1.15 times of the optimal value). Conclusions Numerical simulations show that the algorithms can lead to solutions that are close to the optimal compared with the competitive genetic algorithm and greedy algorithm.

Abstract
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to strain the healthcare system, it has also expanded telemedicine. There is a subset of hospitalized moderate to severe COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen but no other intervention. This is a retrospective study of patients ≥18 years with moderate to severe COVID-19 that participated in a home monitoring program with supplemental oxygen (HMP-O2) (N = 25). For study outcomes, HMP-O2 participants were compared to patients meeting the same inclusion criteria but did not participate in the program (N = 60). On average, the HMP-O2 patients spent 5.8 days (±5.5 days) in the hospital compared to 8.12 days (±5.5 days) for non-program patients. This resulted in 19% cost-savings for HMP-O2 patients. Lessons learned from this program can be applied to future HMPs for either COVID-19 or other conditions that would benefit from telecare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With high inflammatory states from both COVID-19 and HIV conditions further result in complications. The ongoing confrontation between these two viral infections can be avoided by adopting suitable management measures. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to figure out the pharmacological mechanism behind apigenin's role in the synergetic effects of COVID-19 to the progression of HIV patients. METHOD We employed computer-aided methods to uncover similar biological targets and signaling pathways associated with COVID-19 and HIV, along with bioinformatics and network pharmacology techniques to assess the synergetic effects of apigenin on COVID-19 to the progression of HIV, as well as pharmacokinetics analysis to examine apigenin's safety in the human body. RESULT Stress-responsive, membrane receptor, and induction pathways were mostly involved in gene ontology (GO) pathways, whereas apoptosis and inflammatory pathways were significantly associated in the Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG). The top 20 hub genes were detected utilizing the shortest path ranked by degree method and protein-protein interaction (PPI), as well as molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation were performed, revealing apigenin's strong interaction with hub proteins (MAPK3, RELA, MAPK1, EP300, and AKT1). Moreover, the pharmacokinetic features of apigenin revealed that it is an effective therapeutic agent with minimal adverse effects, for instance, hepatoxicity. CONCLUSION Synergetic effects of COVID-19 on the progression of HIV may still be a danger to global public health. Consequently, advanced solutions are required to give valid information regarding apigenin as a suitable therapeutic agent for the management of COVID-19 and HIV synergetic effects. However, the findings have yet to be confirmed in patients, suggesting more in vitro and in vivo studies.

Abstract
The interplay of physical, social, and economic factors during the pandemic adversely affected the mental health of healthy people and exacerbated pre-existing mental disorders. This study aimed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study involving 1246 participants was conducted. A validated questionnaire consisting of the level of knowledge and practice of precautionary behaviors, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) was used as an instrument to assess the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results revealed that most participants possessed a high level of knowledge about COVID-19 and practiced wearing face masks daily as a precautionary measure. The average DASS scores were beyond the mild to moderate cut-off point for all three domains. The present study found that prolonged lockdowns had significantly impacted (p < 0.05), the mental health of the general population in Malaysia, reducing quality of life during the pandemic. Employment status, financial instability, and low annual incomes appeared to be risk factors (p < 0.05) contributing to mental distress, while older age played a protective role (p < 0.05). This is the first large-scale study in Malaysia to assess the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general population.

Abstract
Animal-derived venoms are complex mixtures of toxins triggering important biological effects during envenomings. Although venom-derived toxins are known for their potential of causing harm to victims, toxins can also act as pharmacological agents. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was observed an increase in in-depth studies on antiviral agents, and since, to date, there has been no completely effective drug against the global disease. This review explores the crosstalk of animal toxins and COVID-19, aiming to map potential therapeutic agents derived from venoms (e.g., bees, snakes, scorpions, etc.) targeting COVID-19.

COVID-19 and Acute Ischemic Stroke Mortality and Clinical Outcomes among Hospitalized Patients in the United States: Insight from National Inpatient Sample. J Clin Med 2023; 12:jcm12041340. Abstract
Coronavirus-19, primarily a respiratory virus, also affects the nervous system. Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a well-known complication among COVID-19 infections, but large-scale studies evaluating AIS outcomes related to COVID-19 infection remain limited. We used the National Inpatient Sample database to compare acute ischemic stroke patients with and without COVID-19. A total of 329,240 patients were included in the study: acute ischemic stroke with COVID-19 (n = 6665, 2.0%) and acute ischemic stroke without COVID-19 (n = 322,575, 98.0%). The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included mechanical ventilation, vasopressor use, mechanical thrombectomy, thrombolysis, seizure, acute venous thromboembolism, acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, septic shock, acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis, length of stay, mean total hospitalization charge, and disposition. Acute ischemic stroke patients who were COVID-19-positive had significantly increased in-hospital mortality compared to acute ischemic stroke patients without COVID-19 (16.9% vs. 4.1%, aOR: 2.5 [95% CI 1.7-3.6], p < 0.001). This cohort also had significantly increased mechanical ventilation use, acute venous thromboembolism, acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, septic shock, acute kidney injury, length of stay, and mean total hospitalization charge. Further research regarding vaccination and therapies will be vital in reducing worse outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke and COVID-19.

Abstract
Both periodontitis and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pose grave threats to public health and social order, endanger human life, and place a significant financial strain on the global healthcare system. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, mounting research has revealed a link between COVID-19 and periodontitis. It is critical to comprehend the immunological mechanisms of the two illnesses as well as their immunological interaction. Much evidence showed that there are many similar inflammatory pathways between periodontitis and COVID-19, such as NF-κB pathway, NLRP3/IL-1β pathway, and IL-6 signaling pathway. Common risk factors such as gender, lifestyle, and comorbidities contribute to the severity of both diseases. Revealing the internal relationship between the two diseases is conducive to the treatment of the two diseases in an emergency period. It is also critical to maintain good oral hygiene and a positive attitude during treatment. This review covers four main areas: immunological mechanisms, common risk factors, evidence of the association between the two diseases, and possible interventions and potential targets. These will provide potential ideas for drug development and clinical treatment of the two diseases.

Abstract
The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become an evolving global health crisis. Currently, a number of risk factors have been identified to have a potential impact on increasing the morbidity of COVID-19 in adults, including old age, male sex, pre-existing comorbidities, and racial/ethnic disparities. In addition to these factors, changes in laboratory indices and pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as possible complications, could indicate the progression of COVID-19 into a severe and critical stage. Children predominantly suffer from mild illnesses due to COVID-19. Similar to adults, the main risk factors in pediatric patients include age and pre-existing comorbidities. In contrast, supplementation with a healthy diet and sufficient nutrition, COVID-19 vaccination, and atopic conditions may act as protective factors against the infection of SARS-CoV-2. COVID-19 vaccination not only protects vulnerable individuals from SARS-CoV-2 infection, more importantly, it may also reduce the development of severe disease and death due to COVID-19. Currently used therapies for COVID-19 are off-label and empiric, and their impacts on the severity and mortality of COVID-19 are still unclear. The interaction between asthma and COVID-19 may be bidirectional and needs to be clarified in more studies. In this review, we highlight the clinical evidence supporting the rationale for the risk and protective factors for the morbidity, severity, and mortality of COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) incidence rates over the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak and the COVID-19 vaccination campaign periods to pre-COVID-19 periods. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort. SETTING Secondary hospital. PATIENTS Patients >12 years with auditory-confirmed SSNHL were enrolled. COVID-19 status and BNT162 inoculation records ≤28 days before SSNHL diagnosis were retrieved. Patients were categorized according to their date of presentation over four equal periods: 1) July 2018-April 2019 (first prepandemic period), 2) May 2019-February 2020 (second prepandemic period), 3) March 2020-December 2020 (COVID-19 outbreak), and 4) January 2021-October 2021 (BNT162b2 vaccinations campaign). INTERVENTIONS Pre- and post-COVID-19 emergence; BNT162b2 vaccine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated to compare SSNHL cases during the COVID-19 and vaccination periods with pre-COVID-19 periods. RESULTS Of the 100 patients with SSNHL over the four periods, 1 had COVID-19 and 8 were vaccinated. The annual SSNHL incidence was 12.87, 12.28, 13.45, and 19.89 per 100,000 over periods 1 to 4, respectively. SSNHL incidence over the third period was not significantly different than the first/second periods (IRR = 1.045, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.629-1.85, ρ = 0.788, and IRR = 1.095, 95% CI = 0.651-1.936, ρ = 0.683, respectively), whereas SSNHL incidence rate over the fourth period was higher (IRR = 1.545, 95% CI = 0.967-2.607, ρ = 0.068, and IRR = 1.619, 95% CI = 1-2.73, ρ = 0.05, respectively). SSNHL incidence in vaccine recipients was lower than prepandemic unvaccinated patients (IRR = 0.584, 95% CI =0.464-1.67, ρ = 0.984, and IRR = 0.612, 95% CI =0.48-1.744, ρ = 0.92, respectively). CONCLUSION There were fewer SSNHL cases during the first COVID-19 months. Although the SSNHL rate over the COVID-19 vaccination campaign increased, it was not higher for patients who received the BNT162b2 vaccine.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and influenza A are two respiratory infectious diseases with similar clinical manifestations. Because of the complex global epidemic situation of COVID-19, the distinction and diagnosis of COVID-19 and influenza A infected persons is crucial for epidemic prevention and control. In this study, tetrahedral DNA framework (TDF) was combined with a rotational paper-based analytical device, and the color change generated by the reaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-H2O2 was used for grayscale signal analysis by ImageJ software. The quantitative detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A H1N1 virus were realized simultaneously. Under the optimal conditions, the paper-based analytical device showed a good linear relationship between the two viruses in the range of 10-14-10-8g/mL, and the two viruses were not affected by cross reaction. This sensor provides a convenient and reliable method for clinical rapid differentiation and diagnosis of COVID-19 and influenza A.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the COVID-19 pandemic medical treatments including emergencies were often delayed, in part because of fear of an infection with Sars-CoV-2. Even patients with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were affected by these circumstances. In the present study we provide a systematic comparison of patients with ACS during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a control group. METHODS This is a retrospective cross-sectional study including all patients admitted with an ACS (STEMI, NSTEMI, unstable angina) undergoing coronary angiography between March 2019 and June 2019 (group A) and between March 2020 and June 2020 (group B). Demographic factors, cardiovascular risk factors and procedural data (extent of coronary disease, clinical diagnose, revascularisation strategy and outcome, use of mechanical support devices, door-to-needle time and in-hospital mortality) were compared. RESULTS 469 patients were included in the present study (239 patients in group A and 230 in group B, mean age 69 years, 71% male). Compared to group A there were fewer patients with STEMI and unstable angina (p=0,033) but more patients with NSTEMI (p=0,047) in group B. Patients in group B had less often single vessel disease (p=0,001) but in contrast more often triple vessel disease compared to group A (p=0,052). CONCLUSION Despite overall comparable numbers of ACS patients those admitted during the COVID-19 pandemic were more frequently diagnosed with NSTEMI and had a larger extent of coronary disease compared to a control group.

Abstract
AIM The New South Wales (NSW) biochemical genetics (BG) service in Australia developed business continuity plans (BCPs) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the essential service remained operational. This article aims to discuss the effects of the COVID-19 BCPs on the NSW BG service and patient care. METHODS BCPs were developed that included charting of NSW BG service workflow and services against staff resources and clinical impact on patients. The effect of the BCPs was analysed quantitatively by reviewing key performance indicators (result turnaround time, frequency and severity of clinical incidents and laboratory nonconformities) and qualitatively from staff feedback generated by a BG laboratory-wide survey. RESULTS Alternative BCPs were implemented during the pre-defined period March 2020 to November 2021 (inclusive), to reflect changes in COVID-19 community transmission, vaccination rates; and health orders. Operation of our essential pathology service was maintained, with no significant difference observed in key performance indicators when compared to pre-COVID. During the pre-defined period of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff reported increased levels of both work- and out-of-work-related stress. CONCLUSION The successful continuation of the BG service, with no statistically significant impact on patient care and delivery of essential services, can be attributed to strategic planning and timely implementation of these BCPs. In conjunction with the resilient and robust attitude of the staff during this ever-changing situation, this experience has served as an invaluable tool for future disaster management planning.

Abstract
The global outbreak of COVID-19 has emerged as one of the most devastating and challenging threats to humanity. As many frontline workers are fighting against this disease, researchers are struggling to obtain a better understanding of the pathways and challenges of this pandemic. This paper evaluates the concept that the transmission of COVID-19 is intrinsically linked to temperature. Some complex nonlinear functional forms, such as the cubic function, are introduced to the empirical models to understand the interaction between temperature and the "growth" in the number of infected cases. An accurate quantitative interaction between temperature and the confirmed COVID-19 cases is obtained as log(Y) = -0.000146(temp_H)3 + 0.007410(temp_H)2 -0.063332 temp_H + 7.793842, where Y is the periodic growth in confirmed COVID-19 cases, and temp_H is the maximum daily temperature. This equation alone may be the first confirmed way to measure the quantitative interaction between temperature and human transmission of COVID-19. In addition, four important regions are identified in terms of maximum daily temperature (in Celsius) to understand the dynamics in the transmission of COVID-19 related to temperature. First, the transmission decreases within the range of -50 °C to 5.02 °C. Second, the transmission accelerates in the range of 5.02 °C to 16.92 °C. Essentially, this is the temperature range for an outbreak. Third, the transmission increases more slowly in the range of 16.92 °C to 28.82 °C. Within this range, the number of infections continues to grow, but at a slower pace. Finally, the transmission decreases in the range of 28.82 °C to 50 °C. Thus, according to this hypothesis, the threshold of 16.92 °C is the most critical, as the point at which the infection rate is the greatest. This result sheds light on the mechanism in the cyclicity of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. The implications of these results on policy issues are also discussed concerning a possible cyclical fluctuation pattern between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality has been observed in patients with COVID-19. Both interleukin-32 (IL-32) and interleukin-34 (IL-34) have been hypothesized to contribute to CV involvement in COVID-19. METHODS This prospective, observational study of patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection was conducted from 6 June to 22 December 2020 in a tertiary care hospital in Vienna, Austria. IL-32 and IL-34 levels on admission were collected and tested for their association with CV disease and short-term mortality in patients with COVID-19. CV disease was defined by the presence of coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke or atrial fibrillation and patients were stratified by CV disease burden. RESULTS A total of 245 eligible patients with COVID-19 were included, of whom 37 (15.1%) reached the primary endpoint of 28-day mortality. Of the total sample, 161 had no CV disease (65.7%), 69 had one or two CV diseases (28.2%) and 15 patients had ≥three CV diseases (6.1%). Median levels of IL-32 and IL-34 at admission were comparable across the three groups of CV disease burden. IL-32 and IL-34 failed to predict mortality upon both univariable and multivariable Cox regression analysis. The two CV disease groups, however, had a significantly higher risk of mortality within 28 days (one or two CV diseases: crude HR 4.085 (95% CI, 1.913-8.725), p < 0.001 and ≥three CV diseases: crude HR 13.173 (95% CI, 5.425-31.985), p < 0.001). This association persisted for those with ≥three CV diseases after adjustment for age, gender and CV risk factors (adjusted HR 3.942 (95% CI, 1.288-12.068), p = 0.016). CONCLUSION In our study population of hospitalized patients with COVID-19, IL-32 and IL-34 did not show any associations with CV disease or 28-day mortality in the context of COVID-19. Patients with multiple CV diseases, however, had a significantly increased risk of short-term mortality.

Abstract
Takotsubo syndrome (stress cardiomyopathy) has become a well-known complication of COVID-19 infections, with limited large-scale studies evaluating outcomes. We used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to compare COVID-19 patients with and without stress cardiomyopathy. A total of 1,659,040 patients were included in the study: COVID-19 with stress cardiomyopathy (n = 1665, 0.1%) and COVID-19 without stress cardiomyopathy (n = 1657, 375, and 99.9%). The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality, with secondary analysis with propensity matching performed to confirm results from traditional multivariate analysis. COVID-19 patients with stress cardiomyopathy had significantly increased in-hospital mortality compared to COVID-19 patients without stress cardiomyopathy (32.8% vs 14.6%, adjusted OR [aOR]: 2.3 [95% CI, 1.2-4.5], P = 0.01) along with significantly increased mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support, hospitalization charge, acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis, cardiogenic shock, and cardiac arrest. These results emphasize the need for more research to reduce worse outcomes with COVID-19-related stress cardiomyopathy patients.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the joint effect of pathogen disgust and trust in government on COVID-19 vaccination intention and to examine the mediating role of COVID-19 worry. The data was collected from July to September 2021 in mainland China by using Questionnaire Star, 2,244 valid cases were obtained among a total of 2,251 participants investigated, with an effective rate of 89.37%. The results indicated the following: (1) Individuals' COVID-19 vaccination intention was significantly higher when "congruence was high" than when "congruence was low", given comparable levels of pathogen disgust and trust in government. (2) There were no significant differences in individual COVID-19 vaccination intention with incongruence levels of pathogen disgust and trust in government. (3) The combination of pathogen disgust and trust in government can influence COVID-19 vaccination intention through COVID-19 worry. Findings illustrate that individuals with high trust in government and pathogen disgust have higher intentions. Trust in government and pathogen disgust positively predicted COVID-19 worry and reinforced individuals' intention to COVID-19 vaccination. The results have important implications for the future prevention and control of the new coronavirus, as well as providing a new perspective on COVID-19 vaccination intentions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The epidemiology of critically ill patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may be different worldwide. Despite similarities in medicine quality and formation, there are also significant differences concerning healthcare and ICU organisation, staffing, financial resources and population compliance and adherence. Large cohort data of critically ill patients from Central and Eastern Europe are also lacking. OBJECTIVES The study objectives were to describe the clinical characteristics of patients admitted to Romanian ICUs with SARS-CoV-2 infection and to identify the factors associated with ICU mortality. DESIGN Prospective, cohort, observational study. SETTING National recruitment, multicentre study, between March 2020 to March 2021. PATIENTS All patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to Romanian ICUs were eligible. There were no exclusion criteria. INTERVENTION None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE ICU mortality. RESULTS The statistical analysis included 9058 patients with definitive ICU outcome. The multivariable mixed effects logistic regression model found that age [odds ratio (OR) 1.27; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.23 to 1.31], male gender (OR 1.21; 95% CI 1.05 to 1.4), medical history of neoplasia (OR 1.74; 95% CI, 1.36 to 2.22), chronic kidney disease (OR 1.54; 95% CI, 1.27 to 1.88), type II diabetes (OR 1.23; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.43), chronic heart failure (OR 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.49), dyspnoea (OR 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.5), SpO2 less than 90% (OR 3; 95% CI, 2.5 to 3.5), admission SOFA score (OR 1.07; 95% CI, 1.05 to 1.09), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on ICU admission (OR 1.35; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.63) and the need for noninvasive (OR 1.8, 95% CI, 1.5 to 1.22) or invasive ventilation (OR 28; 95% CI, 22 to 35) and neuromuscular blockade (OR 3.5; 95% CI, 2.6 to 4.8), were associated with larger ICU mortality.Higher GCS on admission (OR 0.81; 95% CI, 0.79 to 0.83), treatment with hydroxychloroquine (OR 0.78; 95% CI, 0.64 to 0.95) and tocilizumab (OR 0.58; 95% CI, 0.48 to 0.71) were inversely associated with ICU mortality. CONCLUSION The SARS-CoV-2 critically ill Romanian patients share common personal and clinical characteristics with published European cohorts. Public health measures and vaccination campaign should focus on patients at risk.

Abstract
Coronavirus are truly one of the maximum critical fantastic-stranded non-segmented RNA viruses, named after the approximately 126-nm-diameter envelope around the nucleic acid-protein complicated. The virus causes significant harm to human fitness, including direct injury to the respiratory system, immune system compromise, worsening of the underlying clinical conditions, and eventually systemic failure and death. Exercise affects the immune system's antiviral mechanisms. Modest exercise, done before or after infection, improves morbidity and mortality to the contamination, according to animal investigations using influenza and simplex virus in the respiratory tract. Moreover, preclinical research has demonstrated that overtraining has a negative impact on the body's response to viral infections. Follow-up research has shed some light on the mechanisms underlying these discoveries. Through the activation of muscle protein synthesis, physical activity (PA) and exercise are essential for maintaining muscle mass. On the other hand, a lack of muscle contractile activity throughout the country of no exercise, particularly in elderly people, is a major contributor to anabolic rigidity and muscle atrophy.

Abstract
We aimed to review the literature to introduce some effective plant-derived antioxidants to prevent and treat COVID-19. Natural products from plants are excellent sources to be used for such discoveries. Among different plant-derived bioactive substances, components including luteolin, quercetin, glycyrrhizin, andrographolide, patchouli alcohol, baicalin, and baicalein were investigated for several viral infections as well as SARS-COV-2. The mechanisms of effects detected for these agents were related to their antiviral activity through inhibition of viral entry and/or suppuration of virus function. Also, the majority of components exert anti-inflammatory effects and reduce the cytokine storm induced by virus infection. The data from different studies confirmed that these agents may play a critical role against SARS-COVID-2 via direct (antiviral activity) and indirect (antioxidant and anti-inflammatory) mechanisms, suggesting that natural products are a potential option for management of patients with COVID-19 due to the lower side effects and high efficiency.

Abstract
Background & objectives High transmissibility of the SARS-CoV-2 has significant implications on healthcare workers' safety, preservation, handling, transportation and disposal of the deceased bodies. The objective of this study was to detect SARS-CoV-2 antigen in nasopharyngeal samples and its implications in handling and care of COVID-19 deceased bodies. Methods A study was conducted at a dedicated COVID-19 centre on deceased individuals from April to December 2020. Rapid antigen test (RAT) and reverse transcription (RT)-PCR was compared on all the SARS-CoV-2 positive cadavers recruited in the study. Results A total of 115 deceased individuals were included in the study. Of these, 79 (68.7%) were male and 36 (31.3%) were female and majority were in the age group of 51-60 yr [31 (27%)]. SARS-CoV-2 antigen test was positive in 32 (27.8%) and negative in 83 (72.1%) individuals. The mean time interval between deaths to the sample collection was 13.2 h with interquartile range of eight to 20 h. Reverse transcription (RT)-PCR was used as the reference test and 24 (20.9%) cases were true positive; 93.6 per cent [95% confidence interval (CI) 88.8-98.4%] sensitivity, 45.2 per cent (95% CI 35.5-55%) specificity, 60.2 per cent (95% CI 50.6-69.8%) positive predictive value and 88.8 per cent (95% CI 82.7-95%) negative predictive value of antigen test was computed. Interpretation & conclusions SARS-CoV-2 antigen test was positive beyond 19 h in COVID-19 deceased individuals. Antigen test was found to be highly sensitive in the deceased. Patients, suspected of having died due to COVID-19, can be screened by this method. As infectiousness of the virus in the deceased bodies cannot be directly concluded from either the antigen or RT-PCR test, yet possible transmission cannot be completely ruled out. Strict infection control measures need to be followed during the handling and clearance of COVID-19 cadavers.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most severe infectious diseases in recent decades, and has had a significant impact on the global economy, and the stock market. Most existing studies on stock market volatility during the pandemic have been conducted from a data science perspective, with statistical analysis and mathematical models often revealing the superficial relationship between Covid and the stock market at the data level. In contrast, few studies have explored the relationship between more specialised aspects of the pandemic. Specifically, the relationship found between major social events and the stock market. In this work, a multi-source, data-based relationship analysis method is proposed, that collects historical data on significant social events and related stock data in China and the USA, to further explore the potential correlation between stock market index fluctuations and the impact of social events by analysing cross-timeline data. The results suggest and offer more evidence that social events do indeed impact equity markets, and that the indices in both China and the USA were also affected more by the epidemic in 2020 than in 2021, and these indices became less affected by the epidemic as it became the world adapted. Moreover, these relationships may also be influenced by a variety of other factors not covered in this study. This research, so far, is in its initial stage, and the methodology is not rigorous and cannot be applied as an individual tool for decision; however, it could potentially serve as a supplementary tool and provide a multi-dimensional basis for stock investors and policymakers to make decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 due to their immunosuppressed state and reduced immunogenicity from COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. This investigation examined the association between COVID-19 mRNA vaccination status and mortality among SOT recipients diagnosed with COVID-19. METHODS & FINDINGS A retrospective, registry-based chart review was conducted investigating COVID-19 mortality among immunosuppressed solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients in a large metropolitan healthcare system in Houston, Texas, USA. Electronic health record data was collected from consecutive SOT recipients who received a diagnostic SARS-CoV-2 test between March 1, 2020, and October 1, 2021. The primary exposure was COVID-19 vaccination status at time of COVID-19 diagnosis. Patients were considered 'fully vaccinated' at fourteen days after completing their vaccine course. COVID-19 mortality within 60 days and intensive care unit admission within 30 days were primary and secondary endpoints, respectively. Among 646 SOT recipients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 at Houston Methodist Hospital between March 2020, and October 2021, 70 (10.8%) expired from COVID-19 within 60 days. Transplanted organs included 63 (9.8%) heart, 355 (55.0%) kidney, 108 (16.7%) liver, 70 (10.8%) lung, and 50 (7.7%) multi-organ. Increasing age was a risk factor for COVID-19 mortality, while vaccination within 180 days of COVID-19 diagnosis was protective in Cox proportional hazard models with hazard ratio 1.04 (95% CI: 1.01-1.06) and 0.31 (0.11-0.90), respectively). These findings were confirmed in the propensity score matched cohort between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. CONCLUSIONS This investigation found COVID-19 mortality may be significantly reduced among immunosuppressed SOT recipients within 6 months following vaccination. These findings can inform vaccination policies targeting immunosuppressed populations worldwide.

Abstract
COVID-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2), is estimated to have caused over 6.5 million deaths worldwide. The emergence of fast-evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern alongside increased transmissibility and/or virulence, as well as immune and vaccine escape capabilities, highlight the urgent need for more effective antivirals to combat the disease in the long run along with regularly updated vaccine boosters. One of the early risk factors identified during the COVID-19 pandemic was that men are more likely to become infected by the virus, more likely to develop severe disease and exhibit a higher likelihood of hospitalisation and mortality rates compared to women. An association exists between SARS-CoV-2 infectiveness and disease severity with sex steroid hormones and, in particular, androgens. Several studies underlined the importance of the androgen-mediated regulation of the host protease TMPRSS2 and the cell entry protein ACE2, as well as the key role of these factors in the entry of the virus into target cells. In this context, modulating androgen signalling is a promising strategy to block viral infection, and antiandrogens could be used as a preventative measure at the pre- or early hospitalisation stage of COVID-19 disease. Different antiandrogens, including commercial drugs used to treat metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer and other conditions, have been tested as antivirals with varying success. In this review, we summarise the most recent updates concerning the use of antiandrogens as prophylactic and therapeutic options for COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 can lead to rare but severe and life-threatening diseases in susceptible high-risk populations, including patients with immunodeficiency. A rare event in this report is stroke following COVID-19 disease in a patient with an immunocompromised background due to leukemia and anti-cancer treatments. CASE PRESENTATION A 6-year-old iranian girl with precursor B-cell leukemia receiving vincristine therapy presented with fever and absolute neutrophil count < 500. Her severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction test was positive. During hospitalization, she had abrupt onset tachypnea, reduced O2 saturation, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures treated with phenytoin and levetiracetam. Right parietal lobe ischemia was found on a brain computed tomography scan, and the cerebrospinal fluid polymerase chain reaction test was positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Several days later, she developed lower extremity paralysis and speech impairment, so speech therapy and physiotherapy were initiated. The patient also received dexamethasone, mannitol, heparin, and remdesivir. She was discharged with enoxaparin and levetiracetam. Chemotherapy resumed 2 weeks following discharge. Her speech and walking improved after 10 months of follow-up, and bone marrow aspiration showed total remission. CONCLUSION Owing to the link between coronavirus disease 2019 and hematologic cancers with hypercoagulopathy and the tendency of patients with leukemia to have coronavirus disease 2019 complications, children with leukemia as well as suspected coronavirus disease 2019 must be hospitalized to prevent blood clot formation.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread rapidly to become a global pandemic. Opportunistic infections (OIs) are common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and oral candidiasis (OC) are frequently responsible for such infections. Here, we describe a patient with a recent history of COVID-19 who was also diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), MAC, and OC. Case Presentation The patient was a 23-year-old woman with a past medical history of HIV infection who was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection 6 days prior to her referral to hospital. Her chief complaints were chest distress and continuous fever with a background of a 5-month history of anemia and tuberculosis (TB). Chest X-ray showed bilateral parenchymal infiltrates suspicious for COVID-19. She was treated with oxygen, empiric antibacterial and antiretroviral therapy. Further workup showed MAC and OC infection. She was started on ethambutol, rifampin and antifungal treatment for influenzas and her symptoms resolved in 8 weeks. Follow-up chest computed tomography scanning showed that the lung lesions disappeared within a short period of time. Conclusion A thorough history and clinical examination are vital to arriving at the correct diagnosis or diagnoses. With the COVID-19 pandemic, clinicians caring for immunosuppressed patients need to remain vigilant of the simultaneous presence of OIs. This report highlights the importance of the treatment and prevention of OIs in HIV-infected persons, which may reduce adverse consequences after infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
AIM To encourage students and professionals to use telerehabilitation, it is critical to understand their perspectives on various aspects of using the service. This study aims to evaluate the awareness, knowledge, and opinions of physiotherapy and rehabilitation students about telerehabilitation. METHOD In the cross-sectional survey, an electronic questionnaire was sent to 484 students studying at Manisa Celal Bayar University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. To assess the student's awareness, knowledge, and opinions of telerehabilitation, a self-administered questionnaire which was created by researching the literature was sent to students that consisted of three sections: "baseline general characteristics," "knowledge and awareness categories," and "opinions" categories. RESULTS Only 322 students who completed questionnaires were received, giving a response rate of 66.5%.The median age of the students is 21. One hundred thirty students (40.4%) are aware of telerehabilitation. Most of the students (240; 74.5%) considered the COVID-19 pandemic had contributed to a greater understanding of the importance of telerehabilitation. More than half of the students (201; 66.2%) agreed that the place of telerehabilitation in the education curriculum should be increased. Two hundred thirty-three students (72.4%) reported that telerehabilitation practices will develop further in the future. CONCLUSION The majority of the students stated that they were not aware of telerehabilitation due to the lack of lesson curriculum. Determining students' thoughts about telerehabilitation can also guide the future of telerehabilitation practices, the development of various strategies for the implementation of telerehabilitation, and the policies related to physiotherapy education.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To describe clinical characteristics of patients in Japan with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) and pre-existing rheumatic disease and examine the possible risk factors associated with severe COVID-19. METHODS Adults with rheumatic disease and a COVID-19 diagnosis who were registered in the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance (C19-GRA) physician-reported registry from Japan between 15 May 2020 and 12 May 2021 were included. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess factors associated with severe COVID-19 progression, defined as death or requiring oxygen inhalation. RESULTS In total, 222 patients were included in the study. Rheumatoid arthritis (48.2%), gout (14.4%), and systemic lupus erythematosus (8.1%) were the most common types of rheumatic disease, 55.1% of patients were in remission and 66.2% had comorbid disease. Most patients were hospitalised (86.9%) for COVID-19, 43.3% received oxygen, and 9.0% died. Older age (≥ 65 years), corticosteroid use, comorbid diabetes, and lung diseases are associated with higher risk for severe COVID-19 progression (odds ratio (OR) 3.52 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.69-7.33], OR 2.68 [95% CI 1.23-5.83], OR 3.56 [95% CI 1.42-8.88], and OR 2.59 [95% CI 1.10-6.09], respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study described clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients with rheumatic diseases in Japan. Several possible risk factors for severe COVID-19 progression were suggested. Key points • Clinical characteristics of 222 adult patients in Japan with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) and pre-existing rheumatic diseases were described. • Most patients were hospitalised (86.9%) for COVID-19 in Japan, 43.3% received oxygen, and 9.0% died. • The COVID-19 characteristics of patients with rheumatic diseases did not show any obvious different pattern from those of the general population in Japan. • In this study, older age (≥ 65 years), corticosteroid use, comorbid diabetes, and lung diseases are associated with higher risk for severe COVID-19 progression.

Abstract
Introduction: The full impact of COVID-19 infections on patients with cancer who are actively being treated with chemotherapy or immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has not been fully defined. Our goal was to track clinical outcomes in this specific patient population. Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of 121 patients (age > 18 years) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from January 2020 to December 2021 with an advanced solid malignancy that were eligible to be treated with ICIs or on current therapy within 12 months of their COVID-19 diagnosis. Results: A total of 121 patients were examined in this study, and 61 (50.4%) received immunotherapy treatment within 12 months. One quarter of the patients on ICIs passed away, compared to 13% of the post-chemotherapy cohort. Patients who were vaccinated for COVID-19 had lower mortality compared to unvaccinated patients (X2 = 15.19, p < 0.001), and patients with lower ECOG (0.98) were associated with lower mortality compared to patients with worse functional status (0.98 vs. 1.52; t = 3.20; p < 0.01). Conclusions: COVID-19-related ICI mortality was higher compared to patients receiving chemotherapy. However, ICI cessation or delay is unwarranted as long there has been a risk−benefit assessment undertaken with the patient.

Abstract
Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted people with substance use disorders (SUDs) worldwide. The aim of this study was to explore, changes in the number of SUD treatment episodes provided during the height of the pandemic and, SUD treatment providers’ perceptions of the impact of COVID-19-related restrictions on people with SUDs and the delivery of SUD treatment services in South Africa. Methods We used administrative data collected as part of the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU) project to assess whether the number of treatment episodes changed during the height of COVID-19 restrictions. We used data from an online survey of SUD treatment providers to assess providers’ perceptions of the impact of COVID-19 on SUD treatment delivery. Eight seven SUD facilities were recruited to participate in the online survey. Results Sixty-three organisations (out of a total of 86) participated in the survey, yielding a 73.2% response rate. About half (n = 30; 47.6%) of the sample thought the need for SUD treatment had remained the same or had increased during the COVID-19 lockdown. Half the sample (n = 32; 50.7%) reported decreased availability of SUD services during COVID-19 lockdowns. Participants believed that the lack of services during COVID-19 lockdown impacted negatively on patients that were enrolled in their programmes and on individuals who wished to access the service. Furthermore, changes in service provision seemed to increase patients’ anxiety, exacerbate pre-existing mental health problems and in some cases were thought to precipitate relapse. In addition, patient disengagement and attrition from treatment were thought to have increased during this period. Whilst 47.6% (n = 30) of providers agreed with the value of the alcohol ban, 23.8% (n = 15) of providers thought it had unintended negative consequences. Conclusion Based on the findings it is evident that SUD treatment services in South Africa have been significantly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic and more severely during the onset of the pandemic. Together with service providers, more effective ways should be sought on how to feasibly expand access to SUD treatment for all South Africans and enhance the country’s preparedness for future health emergencies.

Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the eating behaviours of people especially fruits and vegetable intake. No study has addressed the fruits and vegetables intake during the COVID-19 in Malaysia. Aim: to assess the daily intake of fruits and vegetables among Malaysian adults during the COVID-19 outbreak, perceived changes in intake, as well as factors associated with the changes in intake. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through online platforms and a total of 506 participants were recruited. Semi food-frequency questionnaires were used to assess participants' fruit and vegetable intake. Socio-demographics information, knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of fruits and vegetables were collected. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS. Results: The majority of participants (99.8%) did not achieve the recommended five servings per day, in which they consumed an average of 0.84 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. 46.4% of participants reported no changes in intake compared to before the outbreak. Fruits and vegetables intake was associated with physical activity level, knowledge, and beliefs of foods that may prevent/cure COVID-19. Binary logistic regression identified two significant risk factors of daily fruits and vegetables intake namely, being a non-Chinese (AOR = 1.905, 95% CI = 1.114-3.257) and having good practices scores (AOR = 2.543, 95% CI = 1.611-4.015). Conclusion: The study found a low daily intake of fruits and vegetables. The findings suggested that nutritional interventions are necessary to improve awareness on consuming more fruits and vegetables to improve overall health.

Abstract
Introduction COVID-19, an epidemic of coronavirus infection, has become a major global threat. The coronavirus mainly targets the human respiratory system, followed by cytokine storm, and altered immune responses associated with disease progression and adverse outcomes. Sumac and pomegranate juice are rich in bioactive compounds, which potentially have antiviral activities. This study is aimed at investigating the effect of a diet based on the use of sumac and pomegranate juice on the treatment of outpatients with COVID-19. Methods In this study, 182 outpatients with COVID-19 were randomly divided into two groups receiving a diet containing pomegranate juice and sumac along with standard treatment and the control group (group 2) receiving standard treatment. Results Consumption of a diet containing pomegranate juice and sumac in outpatients with COVID-19, who were receiving standard-of-care treatment, led to a significant decrease in fever, chills, cough, weakness, smell and taste disorders, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and abdominal pain compared with outpatients with COVID-19 who received only standard treatment. Conclusion Clinical trials of outpatients have limitations such as patients' resilience to post-COVID-19 follow-up. However, the use of pomegranate juice and sumac can be efficacious in reducing COVID-19 symptoms. This trial is registered with IRCT20190406043175N3.
