Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds: Synthetic Routes, Properties, and Applications

Near-Infrared-Absorbing B-N Lewis Pair-Functionalized Anthracenes: Electronic Structure Tuning, Conformational Isomerism, and Applications in Photothermal Cancer Therapy

B-N-fused dianthracenylpyrazine derivatives are synthesized to generate new low gap chromophores. Photophysical and electrochemical, crystal packing, and theoretical studies have been performed. Two energetically similar conformers are identified by density functional theory calculations, showing that the core unit adopts a curved saddle-like shape (x-isomer) or a zig-zag conformation (z-isomer). In the solid state, the z-isomer is prevalent according to an X-ray crystal structure of a C₆F₅-substituted derivative (4-Pf), but variable-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance studies suggest a dynamic behavior in solution. B-N fusion results in a large decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap and dramatically lowers the LUMO energy compared to the all-carbon analogues. 4-Pf in particular shows significant absorbance at greater than 700 nm while being almost transparent throughout the visible region. After encapsulation in the biodegradable polymer DSPE-mPEG₂₀₀₀, 4-Pf nanoparticles (4-Pf-NPs) exhibit good water solubility, high photostability, and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼41.8%. 4-Pf-NPs are evaluated both in vitro and in vivo as photothermal therapeutic agents. These results uncover B-N Lewis pair functionalization of PAHs as a promising strategy toward new NIR-absorbing materials for photothermal applications.

Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation of Trinaphthylamine: Selective Formation of a Nitrogen-Centered Polycyclic π-System Comprising 5- and 7-Membered Rings

We describe a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold comprising a unique combination of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. The compound is accessible through an intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine. To the best of our knowledge this is the very first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. The unusual ring fusion motif is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of the unexpected product is rationalized by detailed mechanistic studies on the DFT level. The results suggest the cyclization to occur under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.

Tetra-Coordinated Boron-Functionalized Phenanthroimidazole-Based Zinc Salen as a Photocatalyst for the Cycloaddition of CO2 and Epoxides

A unique B-N coordinated phenanthroimidazole-based zinc salen was synthesized. The zinc salen thus synthesized acts as a photocatalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxides under ambient conditions. DFT study of the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxide indicates the preference of the reaction pathway when photocatalyzed by zinc salen. We anticipate that this strategy will help to design new photocatalysts for CO₂ fixation.

Two-Fold Intramolecular Phosphacyclization: From Fluorescent Diphosphapyrene Salts to Pentavalent Derivatives

The synthesis of π-extended pyrene-based luminescent compounds containing two six-membered phosphacycles has been realized through a two-step synthesis. It involves a Cu(II)-mediated double cyclization of tertiary diphosphane derivatives to afford dicationic molecules with quaternized phosphorus centers. Subsequent transformation of diphosphonium species into the corresponding P-oxide derivatives has been successfully achieved through Pd(0)-assisted cleavage of the P-Ph bonds, which opens a promising way for the functionalization of polyaromatic P-systems.

Supramolecular Substructure of C60-Embedded Schwarzite

Herein we present a new concept of carbon allotrope, namely, fullerene-embedded schwarzite. We isolated crystals of fullerene embedded in 4 equiv of a negatively curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), 1, which could be viewed as a substructure of the hypothetical fullerene-schwarzite complex. On the basis of crystal structure, the stability of the complex (C₆₀⊂(1)₄) was studied by theoretical methods (ALMO-EDA), showing that the noncovalent interactions driven by dispersion forces is key for stabilizing the complex, which was further supported by noncovalent interactions (NCI) plots and Hirshfeld-surface analyses. Our findings of C₆₀⊂(1)₄ provide a perspective toward the development of novel sp²-carbon allotropes comprising multiple components.

Late-stage derivatization of a (B,O)2-doped perylene

Regioselective di- and tetrabrominations of the (B,O)₂-perylene 1 afford derivatives 2-4. Despite their poor solubility, 2 and 4 could be used in Stille-type coupling reactions to introduce two CCMe (5) or four CC(p-C₆H₄tBu) substituents (6), respectively. The alkynylated derivatives show blue-green photoluminescence with appreciable quantum efficiencies.

Tandem Electro-Oxidative C-C and C-N Coupling and Aromatization for the Construction of Pyrazine-Fused Bis-aza[7]helicene

Repeated tandem electro-oxidative C-C and C-N coupling and aromatization were employed for the efficient construction of aza[7]helicene (BA7) as a key intermediate and the targeted pyrazine-fused bis-aza[7]helicene (PBBA7) derivatives in 90.0-93.2% isolated yields under a controlled potential. The electrosynthetic protocol showed high selectivity and enabled rapid access to functionalized organic conjugated materials from readily available polycyclic aromatic amines. A synthetic mechanistic study along with an investigation of the photoelectrical properties and application of PBBA7-C16 as a potential hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells were performed.

Sulfur-Doped Quintuple [9]Helicene with Azacorannulene as Core

Herein, a hetero(S,N)-quintuple [9]helicene (SNQ9H) molecule with an azacorannulene core was synthesized, currently representing the highest hetero-helicene reported in the field of multiple [n]helicenes. X-ray crystallography indicated that SNQ9H includes not only a propeller-shaped conformer SNQ9H-1, but also an unforeseen quasi-propeller-shaped conformer SNQ9H-2. Different conformers were observed for the first time in multiple [n≥9]helicenes, likely owing to the doping of heteroatomic sulfurs in the helical skeletons. Remarkably, the ratio of SNQ9H-1 to SNQ9H-2 can be regulated in situ by the reaction temperature. Experimental studies on the photophysical and redox properties of SNQ9H and theoretical calculations clearly demonstrated that the electronic structures of SNQ9H depend on their molecular conformations. The strategy of introducing heteroatomic sulfurs into the helical skeleton may be useful in constructing various conformers of higher multiple [n]helicenes in the future.

Redox-Switchable Complexes Based on Nanographene-NHCs

A series of rhodium and iridium complexes with a N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand decorated with a perylene‐diimide‐pyrene moiety are described. Electrochemical studies reveal that the complexes can undergo two successive one‐electron reduction events, associated to the reduction of the PDI moiety attached to the NHC ligand. The reduction of the ligand produces a significant increase on its electron‐donating character, as observed from the infrared spectroelectrochemical studies. The rhodium complex was tested in the [3+2] cycloaddition of diphenylcyclopropenone and methylphenylacetylene, where it displayed a redox‐switchable behavior. The neutral complex showed moderate activity, which was suppressed when the catalyst was reduced.

Unsymmetric Pentacene- and Pentacenequinone-Fused Porphyrins: Understanding the Effect of Cross- and Linear-Conjugation

Unsymmetric pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins were designed and synthesized. The cross-conjugated (AM ₁ -AM ₃ ) and linear-conjugated (AM ₅ -AM ₇ ) porphyrins displayed strikingly different sets of optical and electronic properties, both of which are unusual and nontypical of porphyrins. MCD, DFT, and TDDFT calculations suggest that multiple charge transfer states exist in both π-conjugated systems, which contributes to the complex absorption and MCD spectra of these molecular systems. The general Gouterman's four-orbital model used to explain porphyrin spectroscopy led to contradicting theoretical and experimental data, and is thus not applicable for these molecular systems. The "2 + 4" and "3 + 3" active spaces have been deduced and have proven effective to interpret the absorption and MCD spectra of the pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins, respectively. Spectroelectrochemistry of AM ₅ -AM ₇ revealed broad and intense IR absorptions in the range of 1500-2500 nm, illustrating the exceptional ability of these pentacene-fused systems to accommodate positive charges. A pronounced metal effect was observed for pentacene-fused porphyrins. While pentacene-fused Ni(II) porphyrin (AM₆ ) demonstrated an abnormal ability to stabilize pentacene with a half-life of >28.3 days, the half-life of the free base and Zn(II) counterparts were normal, similar to those of pentacene analogues. This work provides important and useful information on guiding new material designs.

Exploring Structure-Property Relations of B,S-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons through the Trinity of Synthesis, Spectroscopy, and Theory

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prominent lead structures for organic optoelectronic materials. This work describes the synthesis of three B,S-doped PAHs with heptacene-type scaffolds via nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions between fluorinated arylborane precursors and 1,2-(Me₃SiS)₂C₆H₄/1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (72-92% yield). All compounds contain tricoordinate B atoms at their 7,16-positions, kinetically protected by mesityl (Mes) substituents. PAHs 1/2 feature two/four S atoms at their 5,18-/5,9,14,18-positions; PAH 3 is a 6,8,15,17-tetrafluoro derivative of 2. For comparison, we also prepared the skewed naphtho[2,3-c]pentaphene-type isomer 4. The simultaneous presence of electron-accepting B atoms and electron-donating S atoms results in a redox-ambiphilic behavior; the radical cations [1^•]⁺ and [2^•]⁺ were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Several low-lying charge-transfer states exist, some of which (especially S-to-B and Mes-to-B transitions) compete on the excited-state potential-energy surface. Consistent with the calculated state characters and oscillator strengths, this competition results in a spread of fluorescence quantum yields (2-27%). The optoelectronic properties of 1 change drastically upon addition of Ag⁺ ions: while the color of 1 in CH₂Cl₂ changes bathochromically from yellow to red (λ_max from 463 to 486 nm; -0.13 eV), the emission band shifts hypsochromically from 606 to 545 nm (+0.23 eV), and the fluorescence quantum yield increases from 12 to 43%. According to titration experiments, higher order adducts [Ag_n1_m]ⁿ⁺ are formed. As a suitable system for modeling Ag⁺ complexation, our calculations predict a dimer structure (n = m = 2) with Ag₂S₄ core, approximately linear S-Ag-S fragments, and Ag-Ag interaction. The computed optoelectronic properties of [Ag₂1₂]²⁺ agree well with the experimentally observed ones.

Condition-Dependent Selective Synthesis of Indolo[1,2-c]quinazolines and Indolo[3,2-c]quinolines from 2-(1H-Indol-2-yl)anilines and Sulfoxonium Ylides

In this paper, a selective synthesis of indolo[1,2-c]quinazolines and indolo[3,2-c]quinolines through the cascade reactions of 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)anilines with sulfoxonium ylides is presented. The formation of products involves the generation of a carbene species from sulfoxonium ylide and its N-H bond insertion reaction with 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)aniline followed by deoxygenative imine formation, intramolecular N- or C- nucleophilic addition and deoxygenative aromatization. This switchable synthesis was condition-dependent. In the presence of K₂CO₃ in CH₃CN, the reaction mainly furnished indolo[1,2-c]quinazolines. In the presence of HOAc in dioxane, it selectively afforded indolo[3,2-c]quinolines. In addition, direct C-H/N-H functionalization of the products obtained provides a convenient and direct access to polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds. These novel protocols have advantages such as readily accessible substrates, easily tunable selectivity, good compatibility with diverse functional groups, and the use of air as a cost-free and sustainable oxidant.

Expedient Access to Polyaromatic Biaryls by Unconventional Ag-Catalyzed Cycloaromatization of Alkynylthiophenes and Au-Catalyzed Double C-H Activation

An unconventional approach for the regioselective synthesis of polyaromatic biaryls via site-selective Ag-catalyzed twofold electrophilic cycloisomerization followed by Au-catalyzed double C-H activation is described. The developed process allows the synthesis of highly decorated biaryls with excellent regioselectivity. As revealed by DFT computations, the reaction represents a rare example of C1-C5 endo-exo and C1-C6 endo-endo cycloaromatization. The formation of the 6-membered ring is predicted to be the fruit of an uncommon SEAr on a vinyl carbocation.

Surface-Assisted Synthesis of N-Containing π-Conjugated Polymers

On-surface synthesis has recently emerged as a powerful strategy to design conjugated polymers previously precluded in conventional solution chemistry. Here, an N-containing pentacene-based precursor (tetraazapentacene) is ex-professo synthesized endowed with terminal dibromomethylene (:CBr₂ ) groups to steer homocoupling via dehalogenation on metallic supports. Combined scanning probe microscopy investigations complemented by theoretical calculations reveal how the substrate selection drives different reaction mechanisms. On Ag(111) the dissociation of bromine atoms at room temperature triggers the homocoupling of tetraazapentacene units together with the binding of silver adatoms to the nitrogen atoms of the monomers giving rise to a N-containing conjugated coordination polymer (P1). Subsequently, P1 undergoes ladderization at 200 °C, affording a pyrrolopyrrole-bridged conjugated polymer (P2). On Au(111) the formation of the intermediate polymer P1 is not observed and, instead, after annealing at 100 °C, the conjugated ladder polymer P2 is obtained, revealing the crucial role of metal adatoms on Ag(111) as compared to Au(111). Finally, on Ag(100) the loss of :CBr2 groups affords the formation of tetraazapentacene monomers, which coexist with polymer P1. Our results contribute to introduce protocols for the synthesis of N-containing conjugated polymers, illustrating the selective role of the metallic support in the underlying reaction mechanisms.

The Rise of 1,4-BN-Heteroarenes: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

BN-heteroarenes, which employ both boron and nitrogen in aromatic hydrocarbons, have gained great attention in the fields of organic chemistry and materials science. Nevertheless, the extensive studies on BN-heteroarenes are largely limited to 1,2-azaborine-based compounds with B-N covalent bonds, whereas 1,3- and 1,4-BN-heteroarenes are relatively rare due to their greater challenge in the synthesis. Recently, significant progresses have been achieved in the synthesis and applications of BN-heteroarenes featuring 1,4-azaborines, especially driven by their significant potential as multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials. Therefore, it is timely to review these advances from the chemistry perspective. This review summarizes the synthetic methods and recent achievements of 1,4-azaborine-based BN-heteroarenes and discusses their unique properties and potential applications of this emerging class of materials, highlighting the value of 1,4-BN-heteroarenes beyond MR-TADF materials. It is hoped that this review would stimulate the conversation and cooperation between chemists who are interested in azaborine chemistry and materials scientists working in the fields of organic optoelectronics, metal catalysis, and carbon-based nanoscience etc.

Small Size, Big Impact: Recent Progress in Bottom-Up Synthesized Nanographenes for Optoelectronic and Energy Applications

Bottom-up synthesized graphene nanostructures, including 0D graphene quantum dots and 1D graphene nanoribbons, have recently emerged as promising candidates for efficient, green optoelectronic, and energy storage applications. The versatility in their molecular structures offers a large and novel library of nanographenes with excellent and adjustable optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. In this minireview, recent progress on the fundamental understanding of the properties of different graphene nanostructures, and their state-of-the-art applications in optoelectronics and energy storage are summarized. The properties of pristine nanographenes, including high emissivity and intriguing blinking effect in graphene quantum dots, superior charge transport properties in graphene nanoribbons, and edge-specific electrochemistry in various graphene nanostructures, are highlighted. Furthermore, it is shown that emerging nanographene-2D material-based van der Waals heterostructures provide an exciting opportunity for efficient green optoelectronics with tunable characteristics. Finally, challenges and opportunities of the field are highlighted by offering guidelines for future combined efforts in the synthesis, assembly, spectroscopic, and electrical studies as well as (nano)fabrication to boost the progress toward advanced device applications.

Synthesis and Characterizations of 5,5'-Bibenzo[rst]pentaphene with Axial Chirality and Symmetry-Breaking Charge Transfer

Exploration of novel biaryls consisting of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) units can be an important strategy toward further developments of organic materials with unique properties. In this study, 5,5'-bibenzo[rst]pentaphene (BBPP) with two benzo[rst]pentaphene (BPP) units is synthesized in an efficient and versatile approach, and its structure is unambiguously elucidated by X-ray crystallography. BBPP exhibits axial chirality, and the (M)- and (P)-enantiomers are resolved by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography and studied by circular dichroism spectroscopy. These enantiomers have a relatively high isomerization barrier of 43.6 kcal mol^-1 calculated by density functional theory. The monomer BPP and dimer BBPP are characterized by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results indicate that both BPP and BBPP fluoresce from a formally dark S₁ electronic state that is enabled by Herzberg-Teller intensity borrowing from a neighboring bright S₂ state. While BPP exhibits a relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), BBPP exhibits a significantly enhanced PLQY due to a greater S₂ intensity borrowing. Moreover, symmetry-breaking charge transfer in BBPP is demonstrated by spectroscopic investigations in solvents of different polarity. This suggests high potential for singlet fission in such π-extended biaryls through appropriate molecular design.

Electrophile-Dependent Reactivity of Lithiated N-Benzylpyrene-1-Carboxamide

In this paper, we describe the lithiation of N-benzylpyrene-1-carboxamide with RLi-TMEDA. We found that the reaction outcome strongly depends on the electrophile used in the quenching step. The electrophile can be introduced at either the benzylic position or at the C-2 position in the pyrene nucleus. Furthermore, when H⁺ was used as the quencher, the product of the intramolecular carbolithiation of the pyrene K-region was formed. Dehydrogenation of the obtained compound with DDQ allowed the synthesis of a novel nitrogen polycyclic compound with an aza-benzo[c,d]pyrene (azaolympicene) skeleton. Attempts to extend the reaction scope to the amides substituted in the phenyl ring 8a and 8b gave an unexpected result. The reaction of both compounds with BuLi gave 1-valerylpyrene (9) in good yield. Photophysical properties, including absorption spectra, emission spectra and quantum yields of the emission of selected products, were studied and discussed.

N,O-Chelated Organoboron Complexes with Seven-Membered Rings

Organoboron complexes have gained considerable attention owing to their versatile chemical structures and excellent optical properties. Nevertheless, stable seven-membered organoboron complexes have rarely been reported because of their challenging synthesis. Herein, seven-membered N,O-boron-chelated dyes, whose photophysical properties have been thoroughly studied via spectroscopic tests and theoretical calculations, were synthesized from commercially available materials via a facile method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies provided evidence of their seven-membered ring N,O-boron-chelated skeleton. These complexes produced singlet oxygen species under laser irradiation, endowing them with potential application as a photosensitizer to treat superficial tumors (B16 cells). Our study provided a new skeleton to construct versatile organoboron compounds and offered a strategy to design heavy-atom-free photosensitizers.

Achieving 37.1% Green Electroluminescent Efficiency and 0.09 eV Full Width at Half Maximum Based on a Ternary Boron-Oxygen-Nitrogen Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic System

Herein, a ternary boron-oxygen-nitrogen embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF), namely DBNO, is developed by adopting the para boron-π-boron and para oxygen-π-oxygen strategy. The designed molecule presents a vivid green emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (96 %) and an extremely narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 19 nm/0.09 eV, which surpasses all previously reported green TADF emitters to date. In addition, the long molecular structure along the transition dipole moment direction endows it with a high horizontal emitting dipole ratio of 96 %. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on DBNO reveals a narrowband green emission with a peak at 504 nm and a FWHM of 24 nm/0.12 eV. Particularly, a significantly improved device performance is achieved by the TADF-sensitization (hyperfluorescence) mechanism, presenting a FWHM of 27 nm and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 37.1 %.

Planar Tetraindolodipleiadiene via Zirconium-Promoted Intramolecular Indolyl C4-H Homocoupling

A novel N-rimmed PAH molecule containing a dipleiadiene core (TIDP) was designed and synthesized from indole, wherein a ZrCl₄-promoted intramolecular C4-H homocoupling reaction of the indole moieties was the key approach. TIDP exhibited a nearly full planar structure and antiaromaticity of the two embedded heptagonal rings. The extremely stable radical cation TIDP^•+·PF₆^- was isolated quantitatively by oxidation with AgPF₆.

Customising excitation properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by rational positional heteroatom doping: the peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX) case

In this paper we tackle the challenge of gaining control of the photophysical properties of PAHs through a site-specific N-doping within the structural aromatic framework. By developing a simple predictive tool that identifies C(sp²)-positions that if substituted with a heteroatom would tailor the changes in the absorption and emission spectral envelopes, we predict optimal substitutional patterns for the model peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX) PAH. Specifically, TDDFT calculations of the electron density difference between the S₁ excited state and S₀ ground state of PXX allowed us to identify the subtleties in the role of sites i.e., electron donating or withdrawing character on excitation. The replacement of two C(sp²)-atoms with two N-atoms, in either electron donating or withdrawing positions, shifts the electronic transitions either to low or high energy, respectively. This consequently shifts the PXX absorption spectral envelop bathochromically or hypsochromically, as demonstrated by steady-state absorption spectroscopic measurements. Within the series of synthesised N-doped PXX, we tune the optical band gap within an interval of ∼0.4 eV, in full agreement with the theoretical predictions. Relatedly, measurements show the more blueshifted the absorption/emission energies, the greater the fluorescence quantum yield value (from ∼45% to ∼75%). On the other hand, electrochemical investigations suggested that the N-pattern has a limited influence on the redox properties. Lastly, depending on the N-pattern, different supramolecular organisations could be obtained at the solid-state, with the 1,7-pattern PXX molecule forming multi-layered, graphene-like, supramolecular sheets through a combination of weak H-bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Supramolecular striped patterned sheets could also be formed with the 3,9- and 4,10-congeners when co-crystallized with a halogen-bond donor molecule.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of polycyclic azomethine ylide to norcorroles: towards dibenzoullazine-fused derivatives

A 1,3-cycloaddition reaction of 2-(tert-butyl)-8H-isoquinolino[4,3,2-de]phenanthridin-9-ium chloride to Ni^II norcorrole in the presence of base is shown to produce a family of chiral derivatives of polycyclic system(s) fused with pyrrole subunit(s) of the macrocycle. Dehydrogenation of the cycloaddition products gave rise to dibenzoullazine ortho-fused antiaromatic porphyrinoids.

Boron-Locked Starazine - A Soluble and Fluorescent Analogue of Starphene

A starlike heterocyclic molecule containing an electron‐deficient nonaaza‐core structure and three peripheral isoquinolines locked by three tetracoordinate borons, namely isoquinoline‐nona‐starazine (QNSA), is synthesized by using readily available reactants through a rather straightforward approach. This new heteroatom‐rich QNSA possesses a quasi‐planar π‐backbone structure, and bears phenyl substituents on borons which protrude on both sides of the π‐backbones endowing it with good solubility in common organic solvents. Contrasting to its starphene analogue, QNSA shows intense fluorescence with a quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 62 % in dilute solution.

Nickel‐Catalyzed C sp2 −OMe Functionalization for Chemoselective Aromatic Homologation En Route to Nanographenes

A Ni‐catalyzed C_sp2−OMe ortho‐functionalization methodology to form chemoselectively alkyne monoannulation or aromatic homologation products is reported as a novel protocol towards the valorisation of substrates containing C_sp2−OMe units. Double activation of C_sp2−OMe and C_sp2−F bonds is also demonstrated. Further use of aromatic homologation products towards the synthesis of nanographene‐like compounds is described.

Access to tetracoordinate boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with delayed fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission under mild conditions

Boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted ongoing attention in the field of optoelectronic materials due to their unique optical and redox properties. To investigate the effect of tetracoordinate boron in PAHs bearing N-heterocycles (indole and carbazole), a facile approach to four-coordinate boron-doped PAHs was developed, which does not require elevated temperature and pre-synthesized functionalized boron reactants. Five tetracoordinate boron-doped PAHs (NBNN-1–NBNN-5) were synthesized with different functional groups. Two of them (NBNN-1 and NBNN-2) could further undergo oxidative coupling reactions to form fused off-plane tetracoordinate boron-doped PAHs NBNN-1f and NBNN-2f. The investigation of photophysical properties showed that the UV/vis absorption and fluorescence emission are significantly red-shifted compared to those of the three-coordinate boron-doped counterparts. In addition, the emission of NBNN-1–NBNN-3 consisted of prompt fluorescence and delayed fluorescence. The compounds NBNN-1f and NBNN-2f showed aggregation-induced emission.

A series of tetracoordinate boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been synthesized under mild conditions, featuring delayed fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission.
