Abstract
The relationship between hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and obesity with low skeletal muscle mass (LMM) has not been established. We aim to assess the association between HHcy and the coexistence of obesity and LMM in asymptomatic adult population. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study among asymptomatic individuals who underwent measurements of plasma homocysteine and body composition analysis. HHcy was defined as > 15 umol/L, obesity as body mass index ≥ 25 (kg/m2), and LMM as skeletal muscle index less than 2 SD below the sex-specific mean of young adults. The participants were classified into ‘control’, ‘obesity alone’, ‘LMM alone’, and ‘obesity with LMM’. Among 113,805 participants, the prevalence of HHcy was 8.3% in control, 8.7% in obesity alone, 10.0% in LMM alone, and 13.0% in obesity with LMM (p for trend < 0.001). In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, the associations showed a positive trend for HHcy along the groups from obesity alone, to LMM alone, and to obesity with LMM. HHcy was independently associated with the presence of LMM alone (adjusted odds ratio 1.186 [95% confidence interval 1.117–1.259]) and obesity with LMM (1.424 [1.134–1.788]), respectively. This study demonstrated that HHcys was more strongly associated with coexistence of obesity and LMM than either condition alone in the adult population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Fractures of the odontoid process frequently result from low impact falls in frail or older adults. These are increasing in incidence and importance as the population ages. In the UK, odontoid fractures in older adults are usually managed in hard collars to immobilise the fracture and promote bony healing. However, bony healing does not always occur in older adults, and bony healing is not associated with quality of life, functional, or pain outcomes. Further, hard collars can cause complications such as skin pressure ulcers, swallowing difficulties and difficulties with personal care. We hypothesise that management with no immobilisation may be superior to management in a hard collar for older or frail adults with odontoid fractures. METHODS AND ANALYSES This is the protocol for the Duration of External Neck Stabilisation (DENS) trial-a non-blinded randomised controlled trial comparing management in a hard collar with management without a collar for older (≥65 years) or frail (Rockwood Clinical Frailty Scale ≥5) adults with a new odontoid fracture. 887 neurologically intact participants with any odontoid process fracture type will be randomised to continuing with a hard collar (standard care) or removal of the collar (intervention). The primary outcome is quality of life measured using the EQ-5D-5L at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes include pain scores, neck disability index, health and social care use and costs, and mortality. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Informed consent for participation will be sought from those able to provide it. We will also include those who lack capacity to ensure representativeness of frail and acutely unwell older adults. Results will be disseminated via scientific publication, lay summary, and visual abstract. The DENS trial received a favourable ethical opinion from the Scotland A Research Ethics Committee (21/SS/0036) and the Leeds West Research Ethics Committee (21/YH/0141). Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of fish oil supplementation on the muscle adaptive response to resistance exercise training, physical performance and serum levels of inflammatory cytokines in sarcopenic older women. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial is performed with thirty-four sarcopenic women (2010 European Consensus of Sarcopenia), aged ≥ 65 years. The participants are allocated into the following two groups: Exercise and Fish Oil (EFO) and Exercise and Placebo (EP). Both groups undertook a resistance exercise programme over 14 weeks. All participants are instructed to ingest 4 g/day of food supplements; the EP group received sunflower oil capsules, and the EFO group, fish oil capsules. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the quadriceps muscle is calculated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The strength of the lower limbs is measured using isokinetic dynamometry. Both groups show improvements in CSA and strength after the intervention. Changes in EFO are significantly greater compared with EP for muscle strength (peak torque, 19.46 Nm and 5.74 Nm, respectively, p < 0.001). CSA increased after the intervention in both groups (EFO; 6.11% and EP; 2.91%), although there is no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.23). There are no significant intra-group, inter-group or time differences in any of the cytokines measured. The use of fish oil supplementation potentiates the neuromuscular response to the anabolic stimulus from training, increasing muscle strength and physical performance in sarcopenic older women.

Abstract
(1) Background: In health care and in society at large, sarcopaenia is a disorder of major importance that can lead to disability and other negative health-related events. Our study aim is to determine the prevalence of sarcopaenia among older people attended in primary care and to analyse the factors associated with this age-related clinical condition; (2) Methods: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted of 333 community-dwelling Spanish adults aged 65 years or more. Sociodemographic, clinical, functional, anthropometric, and pharmacological data were collected. Sarcopaenia was defined following European Working Group on Sarcopaenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria; (3) Results: Sarcopaenia was present in 20.4% of the study sample, and to a severe degree in 6%. The intensity of the association between sarcopaenia and frailty was weak-moderate (Cramer V = 0.45). According to the multinomial logistic regression model performed, sarcopaenia was positively associated with age and with the presence of psychopathology (OR = 2.72; 95% CI = 1.30–5.70) and was inversely correlated with body mass index (OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.67–0.80; (4) Conclusions: Sarcopaenia commonly affects community-dwelling older persons and may be associated with age, body mass index, and psychopathology. The latter factor may be modifiable or treatable and is therefore a possible target for intervention.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is defined as co-occurrence of increased fat mass and sarcopenia and may predict adverse health outcomes in the pediatric population. However, the prevalence of SO and its association with adverse health outcomes have not been well defined in children and adolescents. We systematically reviewed data on the SO definition, prevalence, and adverse outcomes in the pediatric population. A total of 18 articles retrieved from PubMed or Web of Science databases were included. Overall, there was a wide heterogeneity in the methods and thresholds used to define SO. The prevalence of SO ranged from 5.66% to 69.7% in girls, with a range between 7.2% and 81.3% in boys. Of the 8 studies that evaluated outcomes related to SO, all showed a significant association of SO with cardiometabolic outcomes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) severity, inflammation, and mental health. In conclusion, this review found that SO is highly prevalent in children and adolescents and is associated with various adverse health outcomes. Findings of this review highlight the need for the development of a consensus regarding definition, standardized evaluation methods, and age and gender thresholds for SO for different ethnicities in the pediatric population. Further studies are needed to understand the relationship between obesity and sarcopenia and SO impact on adverse health outcomes in children and adolescents.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate changes in 24-h energy expenditure (EE), substrate oxidation, and body composition following resistance exercise (RE) and a high protein diet via whey protein supplementation (alone and combined) in healthy older men. METHODS In a pooled groups analysis, 33 healthy older men [(mean ± SE) age: 67 ± 1 years; BMI: 25.4 ± 0.4 kg/m2] were randomized to either RE (2×/week; n = 17) or non-exercise (n = 16) and either a high protein diet via whey protein supplementation (PRO, 2 × 25 g whey protein isolate/d; n = 17) or control (CON, 2 × 23.75 g maltodextrin/d; n = 16). An exploratory sub-analysis was also conducted between RE+CON (n = 8) and RE+PRO (n = 9). At baseline and 12 weeks, participants resided in respiration chambers for measurement of 24-h EE and substrate oxidation and wore an accelerometer for 7 days for estimation of free-living EE. RESULTS Resistance exercise resulted in greater increases in fat-free mass (1.0 ± 0.3 kg), resting metabolic rate [(RMR) 36 ± 14 kcal/d], sedentary EE (60 ± 33 kcal/d), and sleeping metabolic rate [(SMR) 45 ± 7 kcal/d] compared to non-exercise (p < 0.05); however, RE decreased activity energy expenditure in free-living (-90 ± 25 kcal/d; p = 0.049) and non-exercise activity inside the respiration chamber (-1.9 ± 1.1%; p = 0.049). PRO decreased fat mass [(FM) -0.5 ± 0.3 kg], increased overnight protein oxidation (30 ± 6 g/d), and decreased 24-h protein balance (-20 ± 4 g/d) greater than CON (p < 0.05). RE+PRO decreased FM (-1.0 ± 0.5 kg) greater than RE+CON (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION Resistance exercise significantly increased RMR, SMR, and sedentary EE in healthy older men, but not total EE. PRO alone and combined with RE decreased FM and aided body weight maintenance. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03299972.

Abstract
Whether poststroke rehabilitation improves muscle mass and quality along with the recovery of muscle strength is not clear. In this study, we examined the changes in muscle strength, muscle mass, and muscle quality in patients undergoing poststroke rehabilitation and assessed the relationship of these variables with improvement in activities of daily living (ADL). This prospective study was conducted at stroke rehabilitation unit in Japan. Muscle mass and quality were assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). ADLs were assessed using the functional independence measure (FIM). Grip strength of the nonaffected and affected sides was measured using hand dynamometer. All measurements were performed at admission to the stroke rehabilitation unit and at 4 weeks thereafter. We assessed changes in motor FIM items and examined the relationships among the measured variables. This study included 179 patients. Patients received stroke rehabilitation 7 days a week individually. Muscle strength and quality significantly increased after 4 weeks on both the sides. Muscle mass decreased after 4 weeks; however, there was no significant difference between the two time points. Changes in muscle strength and quality showed a significant correlation with improvement in ADLs [r = 0.66 (male), 0.45 (female) and 0.55 (male), 0.31 (female), respectively]; however, muscle mass showed no correlation with improvement in ADLs. Poststroke rehabilitation improves muscle strength and quality, as well as ADLs. Muscle mass is not an appropriate measure to assess the effects of stroke rehabilitation; it is desirable to instead use muscle strength and quality to assess stroke rehabilitation.

Abstract
Assessing multiple domains of health in older adults requires multidimensional and large datasets. Consensus on definitions, measurement protocols and outcome measures is a prerequisite. The Physical Activity and Nutritional INfluences In Ageing (PANINI) Toolkit aims to provide a standardized toolkit of best-practice measures for assessing health domains of older adults with an emphasis on nutrition and physical activity. The toolkit was drafted by consensus of multidisciplinary and pan-European experts on ageing to standardize research initiatives in diverse populations within the PANINI consortium. Domains within the PANINI Toolkit include socio-demographics, general health, nutrition, physical activity and physical performance and psychological and cognitive health. Implementation across various countries, settings and ageing populations has proven the feasibility of its use in research. This multidimensional and standardized approach supports interoperability and re-use of data, which is needed to optimize the coordination of research efforts, increase generalizability of findings and ultimately address the challenges of ageing.

Abstract
Background: Heritability explains 45-82% of muscle mass and strength variation, yet polygenic models for muscle phenotypes in older women are scarce. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to (1) assess if total genotype predisposition score (GPSTOTAL) for a set of polymorphisms differed between older women with low and high muscle mass, and (2) utilise a data-driven GPS (GPSDD) to predict the variance in muscle size and strength-related phenotypes. Methods: In three-hundred 60- to 91-year-old Caucasian women (70.7 ± 5.7 years), skeletal muscle mass, biceps brachii thickness, vastus lateralis anatomical cross-sectional area (VLACSA), hand grip strength (HGS), and elbow flexion (MVCEF) and knee extension (MVCKE) maximum voluntary contraction were measured. Participants were classified as having low muscle mass if the skeletal muscle index (SMI) < 6.76 kg/m2 or relative skeletal muscle mass (%SMMr) < 22.1%. Genotyping was completed for 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). GPSTOTAL was calculated from 23 SNPs and compared between the low and high muscle mass groups. A GPSDD was performed to identify the association of SNPs with other skeletal muscle phenotypes. Results: There was no significant difference in GPSTOTAL between low and high muscle mass groups, irrespective of classification based on SMI or %SMMr. The GPSDD model, using 23 selected SNPs, revealed that 13 SNPs were associated with at least one skeletal muscle phenotype: HIF1A rs11549465 was associated with four phenotypes and, in descending number of phenotype associations, ACE rs4341 with three; PTK2 rs7460 and CNTFR rs2070802 with two; and MTHFR rs17421511, ACVR1B rs10783485, CNTF rs1800169, MTHFR rs1801131, MTHFR rs1537516, TRHR rs7832552, MSTN rs1805086, COL1A1 rs1800012, and FTO rs9939609 with one phenotype. The GPSDD with age included as a predictor variable explained 1.7% variance of biceps brachii thickness, 12.5% of VLACSA, 19.0% of HGS, 8.2% of MVCEF, and 9.6% of MVCKE. Conclusions: In older women, GPSTOTAL did not differ between low and high muscle mass groups. However, GPSDD was associated with muscle size and strength phenotypes. Further advancement of polygenic models to understand skeletal muscle function during ageing might become useful in targeting interventions towards older adults most likely to lose physical independence.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a major issue among the elderly. However, the effects of nutritional status and body composition on functional recovery in patients with proximal femur fractures (PFF) remain unclear. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of nutritional status, body composition (skeletal muscle mass and muscle quality measured by phase angle [PhA] values), and muscle strength on the improvement in activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with PFF. We enrolled patients with PFF admitted to a rehabilitation unit. Nutritional status, body composition, grip strength, and motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score were assessed on admission day and at 4 weeks thereafter. Of 148 patients, 84 had femoral neck fractures, and 64 had trochanteric fractures. The mean motor FIM score was 49.2 points at admission and 64.9 points after 4 weeks. In multivariate analysis, higher geriatric nutritional risk index and PhA measured by anthropometry were associated with a significantly higher FIM score after 4 weeks. Muscle strength and quality changes significantly correlated with ADL improvement. Poor nutritional status and decreased muscle strength and quality interfered with ADL recovery. Nutritional management before injury and from the acute phase, and rehabilitation to maintain skeletal muscle status, are important for ADL recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Evidence on the occurrence of low skeletal muscle mass (low-SMM) following bariatric surgery (BS) as well as on the impact of low-SMM antedating BS on post-surgical body composition (BC) are scant. In this context, we aimed to prospectively evaluate the prevalence of low-SMM prior to and up to 5 years after BS, and to evaluate pre-surgical low-SMM as an independent risk factor for the presence of low-SMM after BS. METHODS Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected database. BC was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A BIA-based formula was used to calculate skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Class I and class II low-SMM were defined respectively as a SMM index (SMMI = SMM/height2) value between -1 and -2, or > -2 standard deviations from the gender-specific regression line of the BMI versus the SMMI relationship in our reference group. RESULTS A total 952 subjects were included, with BC being available for 877 (92%) subjects at 12 months and for 576 subjects (60%) at 60 months after BS. Prior to surgery, and at 12-, or at 60-months after surgery, class I and class II low-SMM was ascertained respectively in 15.6% and 4.6%, 5.3% and 1.4%, and 16.6% and 6.3% of the study participants. Logistic regression analysis showed that the occurrence of low-SMM at 12- and 60-months follow-up, was independently predicted not only by age at the time of surgery [respectively, HR: 1.052 (95% CI 1.020-1.084), p = 0.001; and 1.042 (95% CI 1.019-1.066); p < 0.001] but also by the presence of low-SMM prior to surgery [respectively, HR: 10.717 (95% CI 5.771-19.904), p < 0.001; and 5.718 (95% CI 3.572-9.153); p < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that a low-SMM phenotype occurs not only in obesity surgery candidates but also after BS, and that low-SMM prior to surgery is an important risk factor for low-SMM throughout post-surgical follow-up.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has a high prevalence in older adults and is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and complications of old age. It has also been related to oxidative stress (OxS) and chronic inflammation (CI) and their consequent alterations. Therefore, it is important to propose therapeutic alternatives such as the consumption of Sechium edule (Chayote), since hypoglycemic, hypotensive, and lipogenesis inhibitor properties are attributed to it. We carried out a study in 81 older adults (OA) with MetS to determine the effect of consumption of chayote powder concentrate (500 mg, three times a day) for six months, with a baseline measurement, at three and six months in an experimental group (EG) (n = 41) and a placebo group (PG) (n = 40), all with a diagnosis of MetS according to the criteria of National Adult Treatment Panel of the National Cholesterol Program III (NCEP/ATP III). Anthropometric, biochemical, OxS markers, and inflammation measurements were performed on all participants, basal, three, and six months after. A statistically significant decrease was found in the concentration of lipoperoxides (TBARS), 8-isoprostanes, 8-OHdG, oxidative stress score (OSS), HbA1c, blood pressure, and in the number of MetS diagnostic criteria, as well as an increase in total antioxidant status (TAS), antioxidant gap (GAP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), interleukin 10 (IL-10), and HDL-cholesterol in EG. The results suggest that the consumption of Sechium edule powder has a hypotensive, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effect in OA with MetS and reduced the percentage of patients with MetS.

Abstract
Sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease share some of the pathophysiologic mechanisms. Sarcopenia is likewise an important feature of frailty and the one potentially related to cardiovascular pathology. Previously, the relationship between arterial stiffness and frailty has been established. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis of studies where the relationship between pulse wave velocity (PWV) and sarcopenia has been addressed. We included six cross-sectional studies that enrolled 5476 participants. Using the WebPlotDigitizer, RevMan5, and SAS 9.4, we extracted or calculated the summary statistics. We then calculated standardized mean differences (SMD) of PWV in the sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic participants. The pooled SMD was 0.73 (95% CI 0.39−1.08, p < 0.0001, I2 = 90%) indicating higher value in the sarcopenic subjects. The three studies that presented odds ratios for sarcopenia as a function of PWV homogenously indicated a greater probability of concomitant sarcopenia with higher values of PWV. Greater stiffness of the aorta is associated with sarcopenia. It is impossible to establish the causation. However, the plausible explanation is that increased stiffness may translate into or be an intermediary phenotype of common vascular and muscle damage. On the other hand, sarcopenia, which shares some of the inflammatory mechanisms with cardiovascular disease, may wind up the age-related large arterial remodeling.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia and cognitive disorders are frequently observed in older individuals. This study investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and cognitive function in this population. Methods This cross-sectional study included 201 participants aged >65 years in Istanbul between July 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021. We screened all participants using the SARC-F (strength, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and falls) questionnaire to determine the risk of sarcopenia. Handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass of participants at risk were measured to diagnose sarcopenia. Sarcopenia severity was evaluated using a 4-m walking speed test. We evaluated the cognitive status of participants using the Standardized Mini-Mental Test (SMMT) and the Standardized Mini-Mental Test for the Untrained (SMMT-E). Results It was found that 10.9% (n=22) of participants was risky for sarcopenia and 6.0% (n=12) and 33.3% (n=4) had definite and severe sarcopenia, respectively. Examination of the association between cognitive impairment and SARC-F showed that 8.6% (n=14) of participants with normal cognitive function were at risk of sarcopenia compared to 20.5% (n=8) of participants with cognitive impairment (p=0.045). Evaluation of the relationship between cognitive function and sarcopenia status showed that 3.7% (n=6) of participants with normal cognitive function had sarcopenia compared to 15.4% (n=6) among participants with cognitive impairment (p=0.006). Conclusion The rate of sarcopenia was significantly higher in older individuals with cognitive than those with normal cognitive functions.

Abstract
To determine whether body composition indices interact with age and gender as a predictor of all-cause mortality, 1200 participants at least 40 years of age were recruited in 2009 and 2010. A multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis device was used to measure each participant's body composition indices, including the fat mass index (FMI), fat free mass index (FFMI), skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI), and visceral fat area index (VFAI). A baseline questionnaire was used to collect demographic information about lifestyle habits, socioeconomic status, and medical conditions. All claimed records of death from 2009 to 2018 in the National Health Insurance Research Databank were identified. The all-cause mortality rate was 8.67% after a mean follow-up period of 5.86 ± 2.39 person-years. The Cox proportional hazard model analysis showed significantly negative associations between FFMI or SMMI with all-cause mortality in the total group and those aged ≥ 65 y/o. The FFMI and SMMI were negative predictors of mortality in both genders. The FMI and VFAI were positive predictors of mortality exclusively in females. In conclusion, the SMMI is a better predictor of mortality than the BMI, FMI, and FFMI, especially in older adults. A higher fat mass or visceral fat distribution may predict higher mortality in females.

Abstract
Flywheel-based iso-inertial training (FIT) has been purported to provide enhanced adaptations to muscle overload compared to dynamic constant external resistance (DCER), but previous studies have not controlled for exercise intensity. We compared quadriceps electromyography (EMG) amplitude between FIT- and DCER-squats with similar tempo. Eleven (5 M and 6F) resistance-trained participants completed sets of five maximal velocity FIT (0.025 kg∙m2) and DCER (55 ± 15 %1RM) squats. Sagittal plane knee joint angles and surface EMG activity of the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM) and rectus femoris (RF) were measured. Repetition time and peak knee angles were similar between FIT and DCER squats. Mean knee angular velocity during the concentric (122.2 ± 23.6 vs. 108.9 ± 22.9, p = 0.022, Cohen's D: 0.820), but not eccentric, phase was significantly greater during FIT. Peak VM (210.4 ± 49.3 vs. 177.5 ± 56.3 %MVIC, p = 0.001; Cohen's D: 1.416), but not VL or RF, EMG amplitude was significantly greater in FIT compared to DCER. Mean EMG amplitude was significantly (p < 0.001) greater during the concentric than the eccentric phase for the VL and VM but not RF. Mean EMG amplitude was not significantly different between modes during either the concentric or eccentric phase. Quadriceps EMG amplitude is largely similar between FIT and DCER squats when matched for movement velocity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Cross-sectional studies have reported that lower muscle mass and strength are risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the evidence from prospective studies is limited. This study examined both the strength and pattern of the associations between these 2 physical capability markers and severe NAFLD using data from the UK Biobank study. METHODS A total of 333,295 participants were included in this prospective study. Grip strength was measured using a Jamar J00105 hydraulic hand dynamometer, and the Janssen equation was used to estimate skeletal muscle mass by bioelectrical impedance. Muscle mass was adjusted for body weight and all exposures were sex-standardised. Associations of muscle mass and strength with severe NAFLD (defined as hospital admission or death) were first investigated by tertile of each exposure using Cox proportional hazard models. Non-linear associations were investigated using penalised cubic splines fitted in the Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 10 years (IQR 9.3 to 10.7 years), 3,311 individuals had severe NAFLD (3,277 hospitalisations and 34 deaths). Compared with the lowest tertile of muscle mass, the risk of severe NAFLD was lower in the middle (hazard ratio 0.76; 95% CI 0.70-0.83) and the highest tertile (hazard ratio 0.46; 95% CI 0.40-0.52). Tertiles of grip strength showed a similar pattern. Non-linearity was only identified for muscle mass (p <0.001). Being on the lower tertile of grip strength and muscle mass accounted for 17.7% and 33.1% of severe NAFLD cases, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Lower muscle mass and grip strength were associated with higher risk of developing severe NAFLD. Interventions to improve physical capability may be protective, but this needs to be investigated in appropriately designed trials. LAY SUMMARY Lower muscle mass - both quantity and quality - were associated with a higher risk of severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Therefore, improving muscle mass might be a protective factor against this increasing public health problem.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia, defined as a loss of muscle mass, has become a major health problem in older people. Few prospective studies report the incidence and risk of sarcopenia. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the prevalence of sarcopenia at the baseline and follow-up after 2 years in community-dwelling older Thai individuals. Methods In 2019, 330 older people were recruited from a community-dwelling population, and these participants were requested to present again in 2021. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the criteria for the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). All participants were asked to perform a 6-meter walk test, handgrip strength test, and bioelectric impedance assessment, and complete the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results The study found that the prevalence of sarcopenia was 65 (19.70%) in 330 older people in 2019, and 44 of 205 participants (21.46%) were reported to have sarcopenia after 2 years. The incidence of sarcopenia was noted to be 2.44% in 2021. Analysis with ANOVA and pairwise comparisons showed that the reversibility of sarcopenia was attributed to high level of physical activity in the 2-year follow-up group (p = 0.014, 95% CI [-1753.25--195.49]). Further, participants with moderate and high physical activity had a reduced incidence of sarcopenia (odds ratio = 9.00 and 14.47, respectively). Therefore, low physical activity in older people led to the development of sarcopenia from the baseline to the 2-year follow-up, indicating that increased physical activity may be useful in reversing sarcopenia, as suggested in the 2-year follow-up study. Low physical activity could be a risk factor for the incidence of sarcopenia. Hence, the prevention of sarcopenia could promote health improvement through moderate to high physical activity.

Abstract
Background In 2018, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) updated the original definition of sarcopenia, establishing new criteria to be used globally. Early diagnosis of sarcopenia in nursing home residents and the identification of contributing factors would target interventions to reduce the incidence of malnutrition, social isolation, functional decline, hospitalization and mortality. Aim Verify the prevalence and the degree of severity of sarcopenia according to the new EWSGOP2 criteria and to analyse its associated factors in residents living in nursing homes in Central Catalonia (Spain). Design A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted in 4 nursing homes. SARC-F test was applied as the initial screening, muscle strength was measured by a dynamometer, skeletal muscle mass by bioimpedance analysis and physical performance by Gait Speed. Four categories were used: total probable sarcopenia, probable sarcopenia, confirmed sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia. Results Among the total sample of 104 nursing home residents (mean age 84.6, ± 7.8; median 86, IQR 110), 84.6% were women and 85 (81.7%) (95% confidence interval [CI] 73.0-88.0) had total probable sarcopenia, 63 (60.5%) had probable sarcopenia, 19 (18.3%) had confirmed sarcopenia and 7 (6.7%) had severe sarcopenia. In the bivariate analysis, obesity was negatively associated and total time in sedentary behavior positively associated with all sarcopenia categories. In addition, malnutrition and urinary continence were positively associated with total and probable sarcopenia. Urinary incontinence was a positive associated factor of total and probable sarcopenia. In the multivariate analysis, obesity represented a negative associated factor: OR = 0.13 (0.03 - 0.57), p = 0.007 and OR = 0.14 (0.03 - 0.60), p = 0.008 with total and probable sarcopenia, respectively, adjusted by urinary incontinence status. For confirmed sarcopenia, obesity also represented a negative associated factor OR = 0.06 (0.01 - 0.99), p = 0.049 and the total time in sedentary behavior a positive associated factor OR = 1.10 (1.00- 1.20), p = 0.040. Conclusions According the EWGSOP2 criteria, high prevalence of sarcopenia was found in institutionalized older people, ranging from 6.7 to 81.7% depending on the category. Malnutrition, urinary incontinence and total time in sedentary behavior were associated with sarcopenia, whilst obesity represented a protective factor in this population.

Abstract
(1) Patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) experience impaired quality of life (QoL). We analyzed HD’s relationship with physical performance, body composition, and muscle strength; (2) QoL was assessed with the Short Form-36, composed of physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) health dimensions. Physical performance was assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), body composition (lean tissue mass% (LTM%), fat tissue mass% (FTM%), and skeletal muscle mass% (SMM%)) was assessed with bioelectrical impedance, and lower extremity strength was assessed with a handheld dynamometer; and (3) we enrolled 76 patients (27 F, 49 M), age 62.26 ± 12.81 years, HD vintage 28.45 (8.65−77.49) months. Their QoL score was 53.57 (41.07−70.64); their PCS and MCS scores were 52.14 (38.69−65.95) and 63.39 (44.64−76.79) and strongly correlated (p < 0.0001, R = 0.738). QoL correlated positively with SPPB (R = 0.35, p ≤ 0.001), muscle strength (R from 0.21 to 0.41, p < 0.05), and LTM% (R = 0.38, p < 0.001) and negatively with FTM% (R = −0.32, p = 0.006). PCS correlated positively with SPPB (R = 0.42 p < 0.001), muscle strength (R 0.25−0.44, p < 0.05), and LTM% (R = 0.32, p = 0.006) and negatively with FTM% (R = −0.25, p = 0.031). MCS correlated positively with SPPB (R = 0.23, p = 0.047), SMM% (R = 0.25; p = 0.003), and LTM% (R = 0.39, p < 0.001) and negatively with FTM% (R = −0.34; p = 0.003). QoL was unrelated to sex (p = 0.213), age (p = 0.157), HD vintage (p = 0.156), and BMI (p = 0.202); (4) Better physical performance, leaner body composition, and higher muscle strength are associated with better mental and physical QoL in HD.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a wild chronic disease among elderly people. Although it does not entail a life-threatening risk, it will increase the adverse risk due to the associated unsteady gait, fall, fractures, and functional disability. The import factors in diagnosing sarcopenia are muscle mass and strength. The examination of muscle mass must be carried in the clinic. However, the loss of muscle mass can be improved by rehabilitation that can be performed in non-medical environments. Electronic impedance myography (EIM) can measure some parameters of muscles that have the correlations with muscle mass and strength. The goal of this study is to use machine learning algorithms to estimate the total mass of thigh muscles (MoTM) with the parameters of EIM and body information. We explored the seven major muscles of lower limbs. The feature selection methods, including recursive feature elimination (RFE) and feature combination, were used to select the optimal features based on the ridge regression (RR) and support vector regression (SVR) models. The optimal features were the resistance of rectus femoris normalized by the thigh circumference, phase of tibialis anterior combined with the gender, and body information, height, and weight. There were 96 subjects involved in this study. The performances of estimating the MoTM used the regression coefficient (r2) and root-mean-square error (RMSE), which were 0.800 and 0.929, and 1.432 kg and 0.980 kg for RR and SVR models, respectively. Thus, the proposed method could have the potential to support people examining their muscle mass in non-medical environments.

Abstract
We sought to determine the effects of 12 months of power training on cognition, and whether improvements in body composition, muscle strength, and/or aerobic capacity (VO2peak) were associated with improvements in cognition in older adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Participants with T2D were randomized to power training or low-intensity sham exercise control condition, 3 days per week for 12 months. Cognitive outcomes included memory, attention/speed, executive function, and global cognition. Other relevant outcomes included VO2peak, strength, and whole body and regional body composition. One hundred and three adults with T2D (mean age 67.9 years; standard deviation [SD] 5.9; 50.5% women) were enrolled and analyzed. Unexpectedly, there was a nearly significant improvement in global cognition (p = .05) in the sham group relative to power training, although both groups improved over time (p < .01). There were significant interactions between group allocation and body composition or muscle strength in the models predicting cognitive changes. Therefore, after stratifying by group allocation, improvements in immediate memory were associated with increases in relative skeletal muscle mass (r = 0.38, p = .03), reductions in relative body fat (r = −0.40, p = .02), and increases in knee extension strength were directly related to changes in executive function (r = −0.41, p = .02) within the power training group. None of these relationships were present in the sham group (p > .05). Although power training did not significantly improve cognition compared to low-intensity exercise control, improvements in cognitive function in older adults were associated with hypothesized improvements in body composition and strength after power training.

Abstract
AIMS Little is known about pathophysiology of sarcopenia in diabetes. We aimed to study amino acid profile associated with skeletal muscle mass loss longitudinally in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This is a prospective study of 1140 patients aged 56.6 ± 10.6 years from the SMART2D cohort. Skeletal muscle mass was measured using bio-impedance analysis at baseline and follow-up. Amino acids were measured by mass spectrometry. RESULTS Over a period of up to 7.9 years, 43.9% experienced skeletal muscle mass loss. Lower baseline valine, leucine and isoleucine levels were associated with decreased skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) with corresponding coefficient 0.251(95 %CI 0.009 to 0.493), 0.298(95 %CI 0.051 to 0.544)) and 0.366(95 %CI 0.131 to 0.600). Higher baseline valine, leucine, isoleucine, alanine and tryptophan levels were associated with reduced odds of muscle mass loss with corresponding odds ratio (OR)0.797 (95 %CI 0.690 to 0.921), 0.825 (95 %CI 0.713 to 0.955), 0.826 (95 %CI 0.718-0.950), 0.847 (95 %CI 0.739-0.969) and 0.835 (95 %CI 0.720-0.979). CONCLUSION The branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine were positively associated with change in SMI and reduced odds of muscle mass loss longitudinally. Further studies should be conducted to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between these amino acids and muscle mass loss in T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skeletal muscle mass is subjected to constant changes and is considered a good predictor for outcome in various diseases. Bioelectrical-impedance analysis (BIA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are approved methodologies for its assessment. However, muscle mass estimations by BIA may be influenced by excess intramuscular lipids and adipose tissue in obesity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of quantitative assessment of skeletal muscle mass by MRI as compared with BIA. METHODS Subjects from a population-based cohort underwent BIA (50 kHz, 0.8 mA) and whole-body MRI including chemical-shift encoded MRI (six echo times). Abdominal muscle mass by MRI was quantified as total and fat-free cross-sectional area by a standardized manual segmentation-algorithm and normalized to subjects' body height2 (abdominal muscle mass indices: AMMIMRI ). RESULTS Among 335 included subjects (56.3 ± 9.1 years, 56.1% male), 95 (28.4%) were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). MRI-based and BIA-based measures of muscle mass were strongly correlated, particularly in non-obese subjects [r < 0.74 in non-obese (P < 0.001) vs. r < 0.56 in obese (P < 0.001)]. Median AMMITotal(MRI) was significantly higher in obese as compared with non-obese subjects (3246.7 ± 606.1 mm2 /m2 vs. 2839.0 ± 535.8 mm2 /m2 , P < 0.001, respectively), whereas the ratio AMMIFat-free /AMMITotal (by MRI) was significantly higher in non-obese individuals (59.3 ± 10.1% vs. 53.5 ± 10.6%, P < 0.001, respectively). No significant difference was found regarding AMMIFat-free(MRI) (P = 0.424). In analyses adjusted for age and sex, impaired glucose tolerance and measures of obesity were significantly and positively associated with AMMITotal(MRI) and significantly and inversely with the ratio AMMIFat-free(MRI) /AMMITotal(MRI) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS MRI-based assessment of muscle mass is feasible in population-based imaging and strongly correlated with BIA. However, the observed weaker correlation in obese subjects may explain the known limitation of BIA in obesity and promote MRI-based assessments. Thus, skeletal muscle mass parameters by MRI may serve as practical imaging biomarkers independent of subjects' body weight.

Abstract
Objective: To examine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with protein intake in men and women in a multi-ethnic population.Design: We used cross-sectional data from the HELIUS (Healthy Life in an Urban Setting) study, which includes nearly 25,000 participants (aged 18-70 years) of Dutch, South-Asian Surinamese, African Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan, and Ghanaian ethnic origin. For the current study, we included 5161 individuals aged 55 years and older. Sarcopenia was defined according to the EWGSOP2. In a subsample (N = 1371), protein intake was measured using ethnic-specific Food Frequency Questionnaires. Descriptive analyses were performed to study sarcopenia prevalence across ethnic groups in men and women, and logistic regression analyses were used to study associations between protein intake and sarcopenia.Results: Sarcopenia prevalence was found to be sex- and ethnic-specific, varying from 29.8% in Turkish to 61.3% in South-Asian Surinamese men and ranging from 2.4% in Turkish up to 30.5% in South-Asian Surinamese women. Higher protein intake was associated with a 4% lower odds of sarcopenia in the subsample (OR = 0.96, 95%-CI: 0.92-0.99) and across ethnic groups, being only significant in the South-Asian Surinamese group.Conclusion: Ethnic differences in the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with protein intake suggest the need to target specific ethnic groups for prevention or treatment of sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnostic cutoff points for sarcopenia in chest computed tomography (CT) have not been established although CT is widely used for investigating skeletal muscles. This study aimed to determine reference values for sarcopenia of thoracic skeletal muscles acquired from chest CT scans and to analyse variables related to sarcopenia using the cutoff values determined in a general Asian population. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed chest CT scans of 4470 participants (mean age 54.8 ± 9.9 years, 65.8% male) performed at a check-up centre in South Korea (January 2016-August 2017). To determine cutoffs, 335 participants aged 19-39 years (mean age 35.2 ± 3.6 years, 75.2% male) were selected as the healthy and younger reference group, and 4135 participants aged ≥40 years (mean age 56.4 ± 8.4 years, 65.1% male) were selected as the study group. We measured the following: cross-sectional area (CSA) of the pectoralis, intercostalis, paraspinal, serratus, and latissimus muscles at the 4th vertebral region (T4CSA ); T4CSA divided by height2 (T4MI); pectoralis muscle area (PMCSA ); and PMCSA divided by height2 (PMI) at the 4th vertebral region. Sarcopenia cutoff was defined as sex-specific values of less than -2 SD below the mean from the reference group. RESULTS In the reference group, T4CSA , T4MI, PMCSA , and PMI cutoffs for sarcopenia were 100.06cm2 , 33.69cm2 /m2 , 29.00cm2 , and 10.17cm2 /m2 in male, and 66.93cm2 , 26.01cm2 /m2 , 18.29cm2 , and 7.31cm2 /m2 in female, respectively. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the study group measured with T4CSA , T4MI, PMCSA and PMI cutoffs were 11.4%, 8.7%, 8.5%, and 10.1%, respectively. Correlations were observed between appendicular skeletal mass divided by height2 measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and T4CSA (r = 0.82; P < 0.001)/T4MI (r = 0.68; P < 0.001), and ASM/height2 measured by BIA and PMCSA (r = 0.72; P < 0.001)/PMI (r = 0.63; P < 0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression models, sarcopenia defined by T4CSA /T4MI were related to age [odds ratio (95% confidence interval), P-values: 1.09 (1.07-1.11), <0.001/1.05 (1.04-1.07), <0.001] and diabetes [1.60 (1.14-2.25), 0.007/1.47 (1.01-2.14), 0.043]. Sarcopenia defined by PMCSA /PMI were related to age [1.09 (1.08-1.10), <0.001/1.05 (1.03-1.06), <0.001], male sex [0.23 (0.18-0.30), <0.001/0.47 (0.32-0.71), <0.001], diabetes [2.30 (1.73-3.05), <0.001/1.63 (1.15-2.32), 0.007], history of cancer [2.51 (1.78-3.55), <0.001/1.61 (1.04-2.48), 0.033], and sufficient physical activity [0.67 (0.50-0.89), 0.007/0.74 (0.56-0.99), 0.042]. CONCLUSIONS The reference cutoff values of a general population reported here will enable sex-specific standardization of thoracic muscle mass quantification and sarcopenia assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the relationship between respiratory function measured by spirometry analysis and anthropometric variables (skeletal and fat mass) and nutritional status in the institutionalized elderly, particularly at high risk of adverse outcomes after respiratory infections and malnutrition. DESIGN A multicenter cross-sectional study with quantitative approach among older people institutionalized living in nursing homes. METHODS Respiratory function was assessed by measuring the forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in the first second, the ratio between FEV1 and FVC (FEV1/FVC), and peak expiratory flow in percentage by means of spirometric analysis (values of the forced expiratory volume measured during the first second of the forced breath (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC)). Nutritional assessment and anthropometry analysis were done to evaluate under or over nutrition/weight. RESULTS There was a significant (p<0.05) and positive correlation between FEV1 and skeletal muscle mass index, whereas fat mass index correlated significantly (p<0.01) with the FEV1/FVC index. FEV1/FVC values were both significantly (p<0.05) associated with high body mass index and triglyceride levels in blood. The prevalence of individuals with ventilator restrictive pattern (FEV1/FVC>70% with FEV1 and FVC<80%) was 27.6% and 12 individuals (21.1%) receive daily bronchodilators as part of the pharmacological treatment for respiratory disorders. A logistic regression was performed to identify predictors of restrictive respiratory pattern. The following variables were entered into the model: age group, female gender, Charlson comorbidity index, body-mass index (BMI), fat mass index, skeletal muscle mass index, total cholesterol and triglycerides concentration. The model was statistically significant (p < 0.05; R2 = 0.39), correctly classifying 70.0% of cases, with a sensitivity of 89.3% and a specificity of 50.0%. Area under curve was 0.71 (IC95% 0.54-0.88; p=0.023). The highest OR for restrictive respiratory pattern were for BMI (OR=5.09) and triglycerides concentration in blood (>150 mg/dl) (OR=5.59). CONCLUSION The relationship between a restrictive pattern of respiratory function and fat mass which deserves future investigation to manage these parameters as possible modifiable factor of altered respiratory function in overweight institutionalized older individuals.

Abstract
Background Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive and irreversible airflow limitation. Different factors that modify pulmonary function include age, sex, muscular strength, and a history of exposure to toxic agents. However, the impact of body composition compartments and sarcopenia on pulmonary function is not well-established. This study aimed to evaluate how body composition compartments and sarcopenia affect pulmonary function in COPD patients. Methods In a cross-sectional study, patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD, > 40 years old, and forced expiratory volume in the first second /forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1/FVC) < 0.70 post-bronchodilator were included. Patients with cancer, HIV, and asthma were excluded. Body composition was measured with bioelectrical impedance. Sarcopenia was defined according to EWGSOP2, and pulmonary function was assessed by spirometry. Results 185 patients were studied. The mean age was 72.20 ± 8.39 years; 55.14% were men. A linear regression adjusted model showed associations between body mass index, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass index, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, and phase angle (PhA), and sarcopenia with FEV1 (%). As regards FVC (%), PhA and exercise tolerance had positive associations. Conclusion Body composition, especially PhA, SMMI, ASMMI, and sarcopenia, has a significant impact on pulmonary function. Early detection of disturbances of these indexes enables the early application of such therapeutic strategies in COPD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young adult cancer survivors experience frailty and decreased muscle mass at rates equivalent to much older noncancer populations, which indicate accelerated aging. Although frailty and low muscle mass can be identified in survivors, their implications for health-related quality of life are not well understood. METHODS Through a cross-sectional analysis of young adult cancer survivors, frailty was assessed with the Fried frailty phenotype and skeletal muscle mass in relation to functional and quality of life outcomes measured by the Medical Outcomes Survey Short-Form 36 (SF-36). z tests compared survivors with US population means, and multivariable linear regression models estimated mean SF-36 scores by frailty and muscle mass with adjustments made for comorbidities, sex, and time from treatment. RESULTS Sixty survivors (median age, 21 years; range, 18-29) participated in the study. Twenty-five (42%) had low muscle mass, and 25 were either frail or prefrail. Compared with US population means, survivors reported worse health and functional impairments across SF-36 domains that were more common among survivors with (pre)frailty or low muscle mass. In multivariable linear modeling, (pre)frail survivors (vs nonfrail) exhibited lower mean scores for general health (-9.1; P = .05), physical function (-14.9; P < .01), and overall physical health (-5.6; P = .02) independent of comorbid conditions. CONCLUSIONS Measures of frailty and skeletal muscle mass identify subgroups of young adult cancer survivors with significantly impaired health, functional status, and quality of life independent of medical comorbidities. Identifying survivors with frailty or low muscle mass may provide opportunities for interventions to prevent functional and health declines or to reverse this process. LAY SUMMARY Young adult cancer survivors age more quickly than peers without cancer, which is evidenced by a syndrome of decreased resilience known as frailty. The relationship between frailty (and one of its common components, decreased muscle mass) and quality of life among young adult cancer survivors was examined. Measuring decreased muscle mass and frailty identifies young survivors with poor quality of life, including worse general health, fatigue, physical function, and overall physical health, compared with nonfrail survivors. Interventions to address components of frailty (low muscle mass and weakness) may improve function and quality of life among young adult cancer survivors.

Abstract
Prostate cancer and its treatment may induce muscle wasting. Body composition and muscle functionality are rarely assessed in patients with prostate cancer from developing countries due to the limited availability of high-quality equipment for routine diagnosis. This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between several simplistic techniques for assessing muscle mass and function with a more complex standard of reference for muscle wasting among Mexican men with prostate cancer. Muscle wasting was highly prevalent, yet it was presumably associated with aging rather than cancer and its treatment itself. The restricted availability of specific equipment in clinical settings with technological limitations supports using unsophisticated techniques as surrogate measurements for muscle wasting. The left-arm handgrip dynamometry displayed the highest correlation with the standard of reference and exhibited an acceptable predicted probability for muscle estimation. Combining several simplistic techniques may be preferable. We also developed and internally validated a manageable model that helps to identify elderly patients with prostate cancer at risk of muscle depletion and impairment. These findings promote the early recognition and treatment of muscle wasting alterations occurring among older adults with prostate cancer.

Abstract
Hypertension is related to impaired mastication that causes malnutrition, declining the general health of older adults. This study assessed the role of dietary intake in the relationship between oral health and blood pressure. Eight hundred ninety-four adults aged ≥65 years who independently lived in rural regions of Japan participated in this study. Hypertension was classified according to the guidelines of the Japanese Society of Hypertension. The oral condition was evaluated by analyzing the remaining teeth, occlusal force, posterior occlusal support, masticatory performance, oral moisture, and oral bacterial level. Dietary intake was assessed using a brief self-administered dietary history questionnaire. Mann-Whitney U, chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and logistic regression analyses were used to elucidate the factors related to hypertension. Normotensive, hypertensive, and history of hypertension were observed in 30.9%, 23.8%, and 45.3% of the participants, respectively. The factors significantly associated with the hypertension were age, body mass index, posterior occlusal support condition, and sodium-to-potassium ratio related to salt intake and/or vegetable intake. Participants without posterior occlusion significantly had higher risk of hypertension (odds ratio = 1.72). This study suggested that there was an association between oral health and hypertension, while the loss of occlusal support may influence nutritional intake conditions.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet a reliable serum index has not been established. The product of serum creatinine and the estimated glomerular filtration rate based on cystatin C (Cr×eGFRcys) was recently proposed as a sarcopenia index (SI), approximately to 24-h filtered creatinine through the glomerulus. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic validity of the novel SI in advanced CKD. In 297 patients with non-dialysis stage 3b-5 CKD, aged 68.8 ± 12.9 years, the total skeletal muscle mass (SMM), handgrip strength (HGS), and usual gait speed were assessed. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus update. The prevalence of sarcopenia in this cohort was 20.2%. The SI correlated moderately with SMM (r = 0.503, P < 0.001), HGS (r = 0.508, P < 0.001), and gait speed (r = 0.381, P < 0.001); the independency of the SI with three muscle metrics was confirmed after extensive adjustment. For sarcopenia prediction, the SI had acceptable discriminative powers in males [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) 0.646, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.569–0.718] and females (AUC 0.754, 95% CI 0.670–0.826). In males, the best cut-off was 53.9, which provided 71.1% sensitivity, 58.0% specificity, 32.9% positive predictive value (PPV), and 87.4% negative predictive value (NPV); in females, the best cut-off was 45.8, which provided 81.8% sensitivity, 62.3% specificity, 31.0% PPV, and 94.3% NPV. In conclusion, Cr×eGFRcys could be served as a surrogate marker for sarcopenia and may be helpful for sarcopenia screening in advanced CKD. Further studies are needed to expand our investigation.

Abstract
Background: Antineoplastic treatments produce adverse events (AE) such as gastrointestinal toxicity. These AE can reduce nutritional intake and promote weight and muscle mass loss. Objective: To determine if body composition, nutritional status, or muscle function predicts gastrointestinal toxicity during chemotherapy in cervical cancer (CC) patients. Methods: Women with CC were studied. Nutritional status was evaluated according to PG-SGA, and body composition was measured with bioimpedance. Toxicity was graded according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Results: A total of 207 women, 81 with toxicity and 126 without toxicity groups, were studied. Patients in the toxicity group had less handgrip strength (17.7 ± 5.0 vs. 20.3 ± 5.0 p = 0.0004); phase angle (5.2 ± 1.1 vs. 5.9 ± 1.0, p = 0.0065); higher prevalence of sarcopenia (35.9% vs. 20.6%, p = 0.016); overhydration (25.9% vs. 6.3% p < 0.001); and PG-SGA C (14.1% vs. 4.0%, p < 0.001) when compared to patients without toxicity. Handgrip strength (HR: 0.93, 95% CI 0.88-0.98, p = 0.028), overhydration (HR: 2.82, 95% CI 1.22-6.51, p = 0.015) and been severely malnourished according to PG-PGA (HR: 3.6, 95%CI 1.46-9.2, p < 0.001) were associated with the risk to present gastrointestinal toxicity. Conclusion: handgrip strength, overhydration, and severe malnutrition are independent risk factors to the presence of gastrointestinal toxicity in CC patients.

Abstract
Simple Summary The role of daily time spent sedentary and in different intensities of physical activity (PA) for maintenance of muscle health is currently unclear. Therefore, we investigated the impact of reallocating time spent in different PA intensities on a sarcopenia risk score (SRS) in older adults, while considering PA type (muscle strengthening activities, MSA) and protein intake. In the present study, we show for the first time that reallocating sedentary time with at least light-intensity PA was significantly related to a lower SRS, which remained evident after adjustment by PA type (MSA) and protein intake. Similarly, reallocating time in light- to moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA was related to a significantly lower SRS. Our results emphasize the importance of displacing sedentary behaviours for more active pursuits, where PA of even light intensities may alleviate age-related deteriorations of muscle health in older adults. In a sample of 235 community-dwelling older adults (65–70 years), a sarcopenia risk score (SRS) was created based on muscle mass assessed by bioimpedance, together with handgrip strength and performance on the five times sit-to-stand (5-STS) test assessed by standardized procedures. Time spent in light-intensity PA (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and being sedentary was assessed by accelerometry, and PA type (MSA) by self-report. Linear regression models based on isotemporal substitution were employed. Reallocating sedentary time to at least LPA was significantly (p < 0.05) related to a lower SRS, which remained evident after adjustment by PA type (MSA) and protein intake. Similarly, reallocating time in LPA by MVPA was related to a significantly (p < 0.05) lower SRS. Our results emphasize the importance of displacing sedentary behaviours for more active pursuits, where PA of even light intensities may alleviate age-related deteriorations of muscle health in older adults.

Abstract
Purpose Muscle atrophy is a major clinical feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is considered a predictor of mortality in COPD patients. Recently, the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the erector spinae muscles measured by chest computed tomography (CT) scans (ESMCSA) has been reported as a clinical parameter reflecting disease severity and future prognosis in patients with COPD. In addition, the serum creatinine (Cr)/cystatin C (CysC) ratio has been considered a quantitative marker of residual muscle mass, because serum Cr levels are affected by muscle mass, and correction by CysC counteracts the effect of renal function on serum Cr levels. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the serum Cr level corrected by serum CysC can be used as a predictive marker of pulmonary function and disease severity in patients with COPD. Patients and Methods A total of 99 patients without COPD and 201 patients with COPD, with a smoking history of more than 10 pack-years were enrolled in this study, and serum Cr and CysC levels were measured. On chest high-resolution CT images, %low attenuation area (LAA%) (≤960 Hounsfield units (HU)) and ESMCSA at the Th12 level were identified. Results There was a significant correlation between the ESMCSA and the Cr/CysC ratio. The Cr/CysC ratio was significantly associated with forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) values, especially in former smokers. Conclusion The serum Cr/CysC ratio could be a convenient substitute for the measurement of muscle atrophy and pulmonary function testing in patients with COPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The SARC-F questionnaire assesses sarcopenia risk. The addition of a calf circumference measurement, known as SARC-CalF, has been recently proposed. We investigated possible associations of SARC-F and SARC-CalF with sarcopenia traits in patients undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS Thirty patients (17 men; 57 ± 15 years) were enrolled. Sarcopenia risk was assessed by SARC-F (≥4) and SARC-CalF (≥11). Probable (low muscle strength or low skeletal muscle mass [SMM]) and confirmed (both) sarcopenia were diagnosed as recommended by the revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Muscle strength was assessed by handgrip strength (HGS) and five-time sit-to-stand test (STS-5), and physical performance was evaluated by gait speed. SMM was assessed by bioelectrical impedance. RESULTS Sarcopenia risk by the SARC-F and SARC-CalF were found in 23% (n = 7) and 40% (n = 12) patients, respectively. The SARC-F and SARC-CalF were both associated with physical function, but not with SMM. Probable sarcopenia by HGS was associated with SARC-F and SARC-CalF. Moreover, both showed moderate Kappa agreement with slowness and probable sarcopenia by HGS and/or STS-5, but only SARC-CalF with probable sarcopenia by HGS. A larger sensitivity was found for SARC-CalF than SARC-F in detecting probable sarcopenia by HGS (70% vs 30%) and by HGS and/or STS-5 (63% vs 44%). CONCLUSION SARC-F and SARC-CalF are associated with sarcopenia traits in patients undergoing hemodialysis. SARC-CalF seems to be more strongly associated with sarcopenia traits and present a higher sensitivity for probable sarcopenia than SARC-F, as it adds a direct measurement.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity is increasingly found in youth, but its health consequences remain unclear. Therefore, we studied the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with cardiometabolic risk factors as well as muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness using data from the German Children’s Health InterventionaL Trial (CHILT III) programme. In addition to anthropometric data and blood pressure, muscle and fat mass were determined with bioelectrical impedance analysis. Sarcopenia was classified via muscle-to-fat ratio. A fasting blood sample was taken, muscular fitness was determined using the standing long jump, and cardiorespiratory fitness was determined using bicycle ergometry. Of the 119 obese participants included in the analysis (47.1% female, mean age 12.2 years), 83 (69.7%) had sarcopenia. Affected individuals had higher gamma-glutamyl transferase, higher glutamate pyruvate transaminase, higher high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, higher diastolic blood pressure, and lower muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness (each p < 0.05) compared to participants who were ‘only’ obese. No differences were found in other parameters. In our study, sarcopenic obesity was associated with various disorders in children and adolescents. However, the clinical value must be tested with larger samples and reference populations to develop a unique definition and appropriate methods in terms of identification but also related preventive or therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Women in midlife often develop chronic conditions and experience declines in physical health and function. Identifying factors associated with declines in physical health and function among these women may allow for targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE To examine the factors associated with clinically important 10-year declines in the physical component summary score (PCS) of the Short Form 36 (SF-36), a widely used patient-reported outcome measure, in women in midlife. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This longitudinal cohort study collected data from geographically dispersed sites in the US. Participants were part of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a racially and ethnically diverse cohort of women enrolled at or immediately before the menopause transition. Women have been followed for up to 21 years, between 1996 and 2016, with annual visits. Data were analyzed from October 2020 to March 2021. EXPOSURES Demographic indicators, health status measures, and laboratory and imaging assessments. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The main outcome was a clinically important decline (≥8 points) on the PCS, based on the 10-year difference in scores between ages 55 and 65 years. RESULTS From the SWAN cohort of 3302 women, 1091 women (median [IQR] age, 54.8 [54.3-55.4] years; 264 [24.2%] Black women; 126 [11.6%] Chinese women; 135 [12.4%] Japanese women; 566 [51.9%] White women) were eligible for analyses based on duration of follow-up and availability of SF-36 data. At age 55, women had a median (IQR) body mass index (BMI; calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) of 27.0 (23.2-32.6), a median (IQR) baseline PCS of 53.1 (46.8-56.7), 108 women (9.9%) were current smokers, and 938 women (86.3%) had at least 1 comorbidity. Between ages 55 and 65 years, the median (IQR) change in PCS was -1.02 (-6.11 to 2.53) points with 206 women (18.9%) experiencing declines of 8 points or more. In multivariable models, factors associated with clinically important decline included higher baseline PCS (odds ratio [OR], 1.08; 95% CI, 1.06-1.11), greater BMI (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.03-1.09), less educational attainment (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.32-2.65), current smoking (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.14-3.26), osteoarthritis (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.01-2.09), clinically significant depressive symptoms (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.34-3.09), and cardiovascular disease (OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.26-3.36). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this cohort study, clinically important declines in women's physical health and function were relatively common between ages 55 and 65 years. Several variables associated with these declines were identified as potentially useful components in a clinical score identifying women at increased risk of physical health and functional declines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although low muscle mass may make an under-appreciated contribution to increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, no prospective studies have explored the association between low muscle mass and carotid atherosclerosis. We investigated whether muscle mass was related to a higher carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) and carotid artery plaque in a community-based population. METHODS The study included 1,253 asymptomatic participants without known cardiovascular disease, who underwent carotid ultrasonography at baseline in 2013-2014 and received a re-examination in 2015-2016. The skeletal muscle mass index was estimated using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer. We assessed the relationship between the skeletal muscle mass index and the development of C-IMT and carotid plaque, both, using multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models. RESULTS During the follow up, 400 (51.0%) subjects with normal C-IMT at baseline developed elevated C-IMT and 215 (17.2%) subjects developed carotid plaque. The risk of elevated C-IMT occurrence linearly decreased with an increase in skeletal muscle mass index quintiles or its continuous data, after multivariate-adjustment in men and women, respectively (both P for trend < 0.05; both P < 0.05). Subgroup analyses showed that this association was BMI-dependent. Besides, there was an inverse association between a high skeletal muscle mass index and carotid artery plaque in women, but the association disappeared after multivariate adjustment. In men, the skeletal muscle mass index was not associated with the incidence of carotid plaque. CONCLUSIONS Skeletal muscle mass was inversely associated with the incidence of carotid atherosclerosis, suggesting muscle mass maintenance may play a role in modifying atherosclerosis.
