Abstract
AIMS Aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of co-administration coenzyme Q10 and pioglitazone on the mRNA expression of adipocytokines in white adipose tissues of chemically induced type 2 diabetes mellitus in rats. MAIN METHODS Diabetes was induced by administration of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg, i.p.), followed by nicotinamide (110 mg/kg, i.p.) 15 min later. The diabetic rats were treated coenzyme Q10 (Q10, 10 mg/kg, p.o.) or pioglitazone (PIO, 20 mg/kg, p.o.) alone and their combination for four weeks. Biochemical parameters like FBS level, insulin and HbA1c along with tissue levels of MDA, SOD, CAT and GSH were estimated. The mRNA levels of ADIPOQ, RBP4, RETN, IL-6 and TNF-α in White Adipose Tissue (WAT) were measured. KEY FINDINGS Treatment with Q10 + PIO showed a significant reduction in the levels of FBS, HbA1c and a significant increase in insulin levels as compared to normal control group. Additionally, there was a significant change in the levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress after treatment with Q10 + PIO as compared to streptozotocin-nicotinamide group. Treatment with Q10 + PIO also significantly altered the mRNA expression of ADIPOQ, RETN, IL-6 and TNF-α when compared to monotherapy. However, mRNA expression of RBP4 did not alter in Q10 + PIO treated animal as compared to Q10 or PIO alone. SIGNIFICANCE It is concluded that co-administration of Q10 and PIO has been shown the better therapeutic effect on the mRNA expression of adipocytokines and oxidative stress parameters as compared to either Q10 or PIO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assessing the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values, serum adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHOD Online databases were searched on 31 March 2019 in order to identify studies comparing HOMA-IR, serum adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels between patients with SLE and controls. A random-effects model was adopted. RESULTS Fifty-six studies involving a total of 4460 patients with SLE were included. Patients with SLE had significantly higher HOMA-IR values (standardized mean difference (SMD)=0.425; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.156-0.693; I2=93.8%) than the control group. The serum levels of adiponectin (SMD=0.547; 95% CI 0.219-0.874; I2=90.1%), leptin (SMD=0.843; 95% CI 0.454-1.231; I2=94.4%) and resistin (SMD=0.856; 95% CI 0.199-1.513; I2=96.6%) were all higher among patients with SLE than controls. A meta-regression analysis revealed that the serum resistin level was positively correlated with disease activity (coefficient 0.123; 95% CI 0.051-0.195; p<0.001). CONCLUSION Patients with SLE have higher HOMA-IR values and serum levels of adiponectin, leptin and resistin than individuals without SLE. The serum level of resistin correlates with SLE disease activity.

Abstract
Exercise is an effective strategy for preventing and treating obesity and its related cardiometabolic disorders, resulting in significant loss of body fat mass, white adipose tissue browning, redistribution of energy substrates, optimization of global energy expenditure, enhancement of hypothalamic circuits that control appetite-satiety and energy expenditure, and decreased systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. Novel exercise-inducible soluble factors, including myokines, hepatokines, and osteokines, and immune cytokines and adipokines are hypothesized to play an important role in the body's response to exercise. To our knowledge, no review has provided a comprehensive integrative overview of these novel molecular players and the mechanisms involved in the redistribution of metabolic fuel during and after exercise, the loss of weight and fat mass, and reduced inflammation. In this review, we explain the potential role of these exercise-inducible factors, namely myokines, such as irisin, IL-6, IL-15, METRNL, BAIBA, and myostatin, and hepatokines, in particular selenoprotein P, fetuin A, FGF21, ANGPTL4, and follistatin. We also describe the function of osteokines, specifically osteocalcin, and of adipokines such as leptin, adiponectin, and resistin. We also emphasize an integrative overview of the pleiotropic mechanisms, the metabolic pathways, and the inter-organ crosstalk involved in energy expenditure, fat mass loss, reduced inflammation, and healthy weight induced by exercise.

Abstract
Objective: The long-distance migration of rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASFs) in the severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) suggests that an interaction between RASFs and endothelial cells (EC) is critical in this process. Our objective was to assess whether immunomodulatory factors such as adipokines and antirheumatic drugs affect the adhesion of RASFs to ECs or the expression of surface molecules. Methods: Primary ECs or human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) and primary RASFs were stimulated with adiponectin (10 μg/mL), visfatin (100 ng/mL), and resistin (20 ng/mL) or treated with methotrexate (1.5 and 1,000 μM) and the glucocorticoids prednisolone (1 μM) and dexamethasone (1 μM), respectively. The expression of adhesion molecules was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The interaction of both cell types was analyzed under static (cell-to-cell binding assay) and dynamic conditions (flow-adhesion assay). Results: Under static conditions, adipokines increased mostly binding of RASFs to EC (adiponectin: 40%, visfatin: 28%, tumor necrosis factor α: 49%). Under flow conditions, visfatin increased RASF adhesion to HUVEC (e.g., 0.5 dyn/cm2: 75.2%). Reduced adhesion of RASFs to E-selectin was observed after treatment with dexamethasone (e.g., 0.9 dyn/cm2: −40%). In ECs, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) increased expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (20-fold) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (77-fold), whereas P-selectin was downregulated after stimulation with TNF-α (−6-fold). Conclusion: The adhesion of RASFs to EC was increased by visfatin under static and flow conditions, whereas glucocorticoids were able to decrease adhesion to E-selectin. The process of migration and adhesion of RASFs to ECs could be enhanced by adipokines via adhesion molecules and seems to be targeted by therapeutic intervention with glucocorticoids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare synovial fluid (SF) resistin concentrations in healthy dogs to dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) secondary to cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) injury and to correlate resistin concentrations with body condition score (BCS) and evaluate resistin release from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and adipocytes. STUDY DESIGN Controlled, prospective, clinical study ANIMALS: Thirty-nine client-owned dogs, 13 healthy and 26 with secondary OA, were enrolled. Blood was collected from six healthy purpose-bred dogs for PBMC culture. An additional six mixed-breed dogs were used for adipocyte collection and culture. METHODS Resistin concentrations were measured with a canine-specific enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. Resistin was compared between healthy SF and OA SF with Student's t test. Correlation of resistin concentrations to BCS was performed. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and adipocytes were cultured under three conditions: negative control, lipopolysaccharide, and concanavalin A (Con A). A linear mixed model was used to determine differences in resistin concentrations among treatments. RESULTS Resistin concentrations in OA SF were comparable to healthy SF. Neither serum nor SF resistin was correlated with BCS. Cultured PBMC stimulated with Con A released resistin, while adipocytes did not. CONCLUSION Neither serum nor SF resistin were altered in dogs with OA secondary to CrCL insufficiency. In addition, resistin was not correlated with canine body fat and did not appear to function as adipocytokine in the dog. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Resistin may not be involved in the pathogenesis of OA. However, resistin may be important in inflammation because it is released from inflammatory cells.

Abstract
Dengue virus (DENV) is a medically important flavivirus and the aetiological agent of Dengue, a normally self-resolving febrile illness that, in some individuals, can progress into Severe Dengue (SD), a life-threatening disorder that manifests as organ impairment, bleeding and shock. Many different risk factors have been associated with the development of SD, one of which is obesity. In many countries where DENV is endemic, obesity is becoming more prevalent, therefore SD is becoming an increased public health concern. However, there is a paucity of research on the mechanistic links between obesity and SD. This is a narrative review based on original research and reviews sourced from PubMed and Google Scholar. Four key areas could possibly explain how obesity can promote viral pathogenesis. Firstly, obesity downregulates AMP-Protein Kinase (AMPK), which leads to an accumulation of lipids in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that facilitates viral replication. Secondly, the long-term production of pro-inflammatory adipokines found in obese individuals can cause endothelial and platelet dysfunction and can facilitate SD. Thirdly, obesity could also cause endothelial dysfunction in addition to chronic inflammation, through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and possible damage to the glycocalyx found in the endothelium. Finally, obesity has several effects on immunomodulation that reduces NK cell function, B and T cell response and increased pre-disposition to stronger pro-inflammatory cytokine responses after viral infection. Together, these effects can lead to greater viral proliferation and greater tissue damage both of which could contribute to SD. The four mechanisms outlined in this review can be taken as reference starting points for investigating the link between obesity and SD, and to discover potential therapeutic strategies that can potentially reduce disease severity.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate: changes of inflammatory, stress and cardiac response in patients undergoing open heart surgeries up to five days after the procedure; the association between inflammatory, stress and cardiac response and whether changes in a certain marker can predict short-term patient outcome. Ninety patients were divided into three groups, 30 participants each (on-pump,off-pump revascularization and valve replacement group). The following markers were measured:complete blood count, CRP, IL-6, IL-10, leptin, resistin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), cortisol, CK and hsTnT in 5 points. Resistin increased in all three groups. Lower IL-10 levels were found after the surgery and higher levels of leptin and MCP-1 in the off-pump than in the on-pump group. Off-pump group had higher values of IL-6, IL-10, leptin, resistin and MCP-1 and lower levels of CK and hsTnT 24 after surgery than the on-pump group. We found significant correlation between MCP-1 and resistin. The difference between resistin at time points 2 and 3 significantly predicted transfusion needs; while the difference between CRP and resistin before and at the end of the surgery together with the difference between leukocytes at the end and 24 hours after the surgery predicted the use of inotropic agents/vasopressors. Cardiac surgeries cause an increase of inflammatory, stress and cardiac markers. Only resistin correlated with MCP-1 which confirms the link between resistin secreted form infiltrated macrophages and enhanced release of MCP-1.

Abstract
Resistin is a small secretory protein that has a pleiotropic role in rodents and humans. Both rodent resistin and human resistin have an extremely stable and high-order multimeric structure. Moreover, there is significant variation in the source of secretion and the diversity of functions of resistin. Mouse resistin resists insulin action and contributes to type 2 diabetes mellitus, while human resistin plays a role in inflammation and also functions as a small accessory chaperone. Currently, active research in the area identified a significant role for resistin in stress biology and as a biomarker in diagnostics to evaluate disease status and treatment outcome. This review summarizes recent developments within resistin biology including their association with obesity, inflammation, stress response mechanisms, and its role in clinical diagnostics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Obesity plays an important role in the development of chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The possible underlying mechanism for this connection is that adipose tissue secretes an array of chemical messenger adipokines proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1-beta). This study aimed to investigate the linkage between adipocytokines and insulin with the cardiovascular disease risk, with particular reference to the adipokines galectin-3, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and interleukin-1-beta, C-reactive protein, and monocyte chemoattractant protein. RESULT Two patterns were identified. The first pattern was galectin-3, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and interleukin-1-beta and the second one was C-reactive protein, insulin and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. The second pattern was strongly associated with the higher scores for resting metabolic rate, diastolic blood pressure, homeostasis model insulin resistance index, lipid profile (except low density lipoprotein, total cholesterol), and body composition parameters (except fat free mass index and waist hip ratio), while negatively associated with age and high density lipoprotein level (all p < 0.05). The first pattern was, however, significantly associated with body fat mass, obesity degree percentage, waist circumference, fat mass index, and waist hip ratio (p < 0.05 for all). Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the resistin/uric acid index as a prognostic factor associated with body mass index (BMI) z-score change after 1 year of lifestyle interventions for obesity. STUDY DESIGN In this prospective cohort study, we included 102 adolescents with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥85th percentile). Weight and height were measured at the start of the lifestyle change intervention and 12 months later. Serum levels of resistin and uric acid were quantified at the beginning of the intervention. The intervention consisted of nutrition education, exercise, and physical activity promotion. RESULTS The sample included 54 girls and 48 boys; the median age was 11 years (range 10-16 years). The BMI z-score decreased during follow-up (median BMI z-score at baseline was 1.81 vs 1.70 after 1 year, P < .001). The resistin/uric acid index was positively correlated with BMI z-score change (r = 0.27, P < .01). In the linear regression analysis, the resistin/uric acid index was significantly associated with BMI z-score modification at the 12-month follow-up (β = 0.17; 95% CI 0.08-0.26; P < .01). CONCLUSIONS The resistin/uric acid index can be considered a prognostic factor for identifying adolescents with overweight or obesity with a greater probability of improving their BMI. This index could help establish different interventions for adolescents with overweight and obesity; however, additional studies are needed to confirm the usefulness of this index.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An increasing number of studies have demonstrated the roles of adipokines in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed to investigate the association of genetic variations of omentin-1, adiponectin, and resistin with SLE susceptibility. METHODS We selected 623 SLE patients and 665 normal controls in the present study. Genotyping of omentin-1 rs2274907, rs35779394, rs79209815, and rs13376023; adiponectin rs16861194 and rs266729; and resistin rs1862513, rs3745368, and rs3745367 was conducted by TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. RESULTS Overall, we found no significant differences in the allele or genotype frequencies of the nine studied SNPs between the SLE patients and controls. However, an increased frequency of the resistin rs3745368 variant was observed in the SLE patients under the dominant model (P = 0.024). In omentin-1, the rs13376023 A allele was found to be related to oral ulcers in SLE patients (P = 0.013), and the rs35779394 C and rs13376023 A allele frequencies were significantly lower in SLE patients with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 (P = 0.019, P = 0.033, respectively). For resistin, the frequencies of the rs3745368 AA genotype and A allele were lower in SLE patients with discoid rash (P = 0.036, P = 0.011), and the rs3745368 A allele frequency was higher in SLE patients with lupus nephritis (P = 0.018). The resistin rs3745367 AA genotype and A allele frequencies were related to the occurrence of renal disorder in SLE patients (P = 0.024, P = 0.009). The haplotype analysis showed that the CGA haplotype of resistin was associated with susceptibility to SLE (P = 0.005). No significant associations of plasma omentin-1, adiponectin or resistin levels with their respective genotypes were found in SLE patients. CONCLUSIONS In summary, omentin-1, adiponectin and resistin SNPs are not associated with the genetic background of SLE in Chinese patients. However, omentin-1 and resistin genetic variations might contribute to several clinical phenotypes of SLE.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate the serum concentrations of inflammatory mediators in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with or without renal alteration (RA) function. Methods Serum samples from 76 patients with T2DM and 24 healthy individuals were selected. Patients with T2DM were divided into two groups according to eGFR (> or < 60mL/min/1.73m2). Cytokines, chemokines and adipokines levels were evaluated using the Multiplex immunoassay and ELISA. Results TNFR1 and leptin were higher in the T2DM group with RA than in the T2DM group without RA and control group. All patients with T2DM showed increased resistin, IL-8, and MIP-1α compared to the control group. Adiponectin were higher and IL-4 decreased in the T2DM group with RA compared to the control group. eGFR positively correlated with IL-4 and negatively with TNFR1, TNFR2, and leptin in patients with T2DM. In the T2DM group with RA, eGFR was negatively correlated with TNFR1 and resistin. TNFR1 was positively correlated with resistin and leptin, as well as resistin with IL-8 and leptin. Conclusion Increased levels of TNFR1, adipokines, chemokines and decrease of IL-4 play important role in the inflammatory process developed in T2DM and decreased renal function. We also suggest that TNFR1 is a strong predictor of renal dysfunction in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Adipose tissue plays essential roles in maintaining lipid and glucose homeostasis. To date several types of adipose tissue have been identified, namely white, brown, and beige, that reside in various specific anatomical locations throughout the body. The cellular composition, secretome, and location of these adipose depots define their function in health and metabolic disease. In obesity, adipose tissue becomes dysfunctional, promoting a pro-inflammatory, hyperlipidemic and insulin resistant environment that contributes to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Concurrently, similar features that result from adipose tissue dysfunction also promote cardiovascular disease (CVD) by mechanisms that can be augmented by T2DM. The mechanisms by which dysfunctional adipose tissue simultaneously promote T2DM and CVD, focusing on adipose tissue depot-specific adipokines, inflammatory profiles, and metabolism, will be the focus of this review. The impact that various T2DM and CVD treatment strategies have on adipose tissue function and body weight also will be discussed.

Abstract
Pf bacteriophage are temperate phages that infect the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major cause of chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) and other settings. Pf and other temperate phages have evolved complex, mutualistic relationships with their bacterial hosts that impact both bacterial phenotypes and chronic infection. We and others have reported that Pf phages are a virulence factor that promote the pathogenesis of P. aeruginosa infections in animal models and are associated with worse skin and lung infections in humans. Here we review the biology of Pf phage and what is known about its contributions to pathogenesis and clinical disease. First, we review the structure, genetics, and epidemiology of Pf phage. Next, we address the diverse and surprising ways that Pf phages contribute to P. aeruginosa phenotypes including effects on biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and motility. Then, we cover data indicating that Pf phages suppress mammalian immunity at sites of bacterial infection. Finally, we discuss recent literature implicating Pf in chronic P. aeruginosa infections in CF and other settings. Together, these reports suggest that Pf bacteriophage have direct effects on P. aeruginosa infections and that temperate phages are an exciting frontier in microbiology, immunology, and human health.

Abstract
The adipokine adipsin is an emerging mediator of human osteoarthritis (OA) progression. Here, we investigated its in vivo role in the development of spontaneous OA in aging mice. We compared articular knee joint morphology, histology in knee cartilage, synovial membrane, subchondral bone, meniscus, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL); and chondrogenesis in the ACL from adipsin-deficient (Df-/-) and wild-type (Df+/+) 20-week- and 20-month-old mice. Serum levels of a panel of adipokines, inflammatory factors, and metalloproteases known to be implicated in OA were investigated. Data first revealed that the early manifestation of OA appeared in the ACL of 20-week-old mice, progressing to severe alterations in the 20 month-old wild-type mice. Further results demonstrated that adipsin-deficiency protected the articular tissues from spontaneous OA progression and triggered significantly higher serum levels of the adipokines adiponectin and FGF-21 while lowering levels of the inflammatory factor interleukin 6 (IL-6) in both young and old mice. This work further underlines the clinical relevance of adipsin as a novel therapeutic approach of human OA. Moreover, this study shows the potential beneficial effect of the adipokine FGF-21 against OA, and provides support for this factor to be a new biomarker and/or target of primary OA therapeutic avenues.

Abstract
Resistin, a proinflammatory adipokine, is elevated in many inflammatory diseases. However, little is known about its performance in periodontitis. The present study is aimed at evaluating resistin expression and synthesis in periodontal cells and tissues under inflammatory/microbial stress in addition to its effects on the periodontium. In vivo, 24 male rats were randomly divided into two groups: control and ligature-induced periodontal disease. After 6 and 12 days, animals were sacrificed to analyze gene expression of adipokines, bone loss, inflammation, and resistin synthesis. In vitro, human periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts were used to evaluate the expression of resistin after inflammatory stimuli. In addition, PDL fibroblasts were exposed to resistin to evaluate its role on soft and hard tissue metabolism markers. The periodontitis group demonstrated significant bone loss, an increase in the number of inflammatory cells and vascular structures, an increase in resistin expression and synthesis, and a decrease in the expression of adiponectin, leptin, and its functional receptor. PDL fibroblasts showed a significant increase in resistin expression and synthesis in response to the inflammatory stimulus by IL-1β. Resistin induced an increase in cytokine expression and a decrease in the regulation of some hard tissue and matrix formation genes in PDL fibroblasts. These data indicate that resistin is produced by periodontal cells and tissues, and this effect is enhanced by inflammatory stimuli. Moreover, resistin seems to interfere with soft and hard tissue metabolism during periodontitis by reducing markers related to matrix formation and bone tissue.

Abstract
Adipose tissue is a complex structure responsible for fat storage and releasing polypeptides (adipokines) and metabolites, with systemic actions including body weight balance, appetite regulation, glucose homeostasis, and blood pressure control. Signals sent from different tissues are generated and integrated in adipose tissue; thus, there is a close connection between this endocrine organ and different organs and systems such as the gut and the cardiovascular system. It is known that functional foods, especially different nuts, may be related to a net of molecular mechanisms contributing to cardiometabolic health. Despite being energy-dense foods, nut consumption has been associated with no weight gain, weight loss, and lower risk of becoming overweight or obese. Several studies have reported beneficial effects after nut consumption on glucose control, appetite suppression, metabolites related to adipose tissue and gut microbiota, and on adipokines due to their fatty acid profile, vegetable proteins, l-arginine, dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and phytosterols. The aim of this review is to briefly describe possible mechanisms implicated in weight homeostasis related to different nuts, as well as studies that have evaluated the effects of nut consumption on adipokines and metabolites related to adipose tissue and gut microbiota in animal models, healthy individuals, and primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention.

Abstract
In a subset of psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients, the skin and/or joint lesions appear to generate biologically significant systemic inflammation. Red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are readily available clinical tests that reflect responses of the bone marrow and/or plasma thrombogenicity (e.g., inflammation), and can be markers for major adverse cardiac events (MACE). We aimed to evaluate if RDW and MPV may be employed as inexpensive, routinely obtained biomarkers in predicting myocardial infarction (MI), atrial fibrillation (AF), and chronic heart failure (CHF) in psoriatic and psoriatic arthritis patients. The study was divided into two parts: (a) case control study employing big data (Explorys) to assess MPV and RDW in psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and control cohorts; (b) a clinical observational study to validate the predictive value of RDW and to evaluate RDW response to anti-psoriatic therapies. We used Explorys, an aggregate electronic database, to identify psoriatic patients with available MPV and RDW data and compared them to gender and age matched controls. The incidence of myocardial infarction (MI), atrial fibrillation (AF), and chronic heart failure (CHF) was highest among patients with both elevated RDW and MPV, followed by patients with high RDW and normal MPV. RDW elevation among PsA patients was associated with an increased risk of MI, AF, and CHF. In a local clinical cohort, high RDWs were concentrated in a subset of patients who also had elevated circulating resistin levels. Among a small subset of participants who were treated with various systemic and biologic therapies, and observed over a year, and in whom RDW was elevated at baseline, a sustained response to therapy was associated with a decrease in RDW. RDW and MPV, tests commonly contained within routine complete blood count (CBC), may be a cost-effective manner to identify PsO and PsA patients at increased risk of MACE.

Abstract
Objectives Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease that is difficult to treat. There is currently no optimal stratification of patients with SLE, and thus, responses to available treatments are unpredictable. Here, we developed a new stratification scheme for patients with SLE, based on the computational analysis of patients’ whole‐blood transcriptomes. Methods We applied machine learning approaches to RNA‐sequencing (RNA‐seq) data sets to stratify patients with SLE into four distinct clusters based on their gene expression profiles. A meta‐analysis on three recently published whole‐blood RNA‐seq data sets was carried out, and an additional similar data set of 30 patients with SLE and 29 healthy donors was incorporated in this study; a total of 161 patients with SLE and 57 healthy donors were analysed. Results Examination of SLE clusters, as opposed to unstratified SLE patients, revealed underappreciated differences in the pattern of expression of disease‐related genes relative to clinical presentation. Moreover, gene signatures correlated with flare activity were successfully identified. Conclusion Given that SLE disease heterogeneity is a key challenge hindering the design of optimal clinical trials and the adequate management of patients, our approach opens a new possible avenue addressing this limitation via a greater understanding of SLE heterogeneity in humans. Stratification of patients based on gene expression signatures may be a valuable strategy allowing the identification of separate molecular mechanisms underpinning disease in SLE. Further, this approach may have a use in understanding the variability in responsiveness to therapeutics, thereby improving the design of clinical trials and advancing personalised therapy.

Abstract
The present meta-analysis was performed to examine the association between circulating blood adipokine levels and Kawasaki disease (KD). Studies were identified by searching various databases, including Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, Wanfang and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. After the studies were pooled, the mean difference (MD) and corresponding 95% CI were calculated. Subgroup analyses and publication bias detection were also performed. The Cochrane Q test and I2 statistics were performed using Review Manager software (version 5.3) to test for heterogeneity. A Begg's test was used to assess publication bias and STATA software (version 12.0) was used for statistical analysis. The results revealed that the KD group exhibited higher levels of resistin compared with those in the healthy controls or disease controls (non-KD; MD=20.76, 95% CI=16.16-25.36, P<0.001; MD=21.27, 95% CI=14.24-28.29, P<0.001, respectively). In addition, when compared with those in patients exhibiting non-coronary artery lesions (NCAL), those with coronary artery lesions (CAL) had higher levels of adiponectin and resistin (MD=1.00, 95% CI=0.06-1.96, P=0.04; MD=2.77, 95% CI=1.32-4.22, P<0.001). Furthermore, compared with those in the inactive-phase group, patients in the active-phase group exhibited higher levels of resistin (MD=17.73, 95% CI=12.82-22.65, P<0.001). In conclusion, the present meta-analysis indicated that resistin levels were elevated in patients with KD. It was also revealed that circulating resistin and adiponectin levels in the CAL group were significantly increased compared with those in patients with NCAL. Furthermore, the active group had higher levels of resistin than the inactive group. The results of these meta-analyses indicated that resistin may serve an important role in the pathogenesis of KD and may therefore be used as biomarkers for the diagnosis of KD, whereas adiponectin may only serve an important role in the pathogenesis of CAL and may therefore be used as a biomarker to distinguish CAL from NCAL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the levels of resistin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva of obese children with gingivitis. METHODS One-hundred and thirty children (65 obese and 65 normal weight; age range 8 to 12 years) were recruited for the study. The children were classified into four subgroups based on their body mass and periodontal status; 1) obese children with gingivitis (OG, n = 33); 2) obese children with healthy periodontium (OH, n = 32); 3) normal weight children with gingivitis (NWG, n = 32); 4) normal weight children with healthy periodontium (NWH, n = 33). Body mass index (BMI) percentile, probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival index (GI), and plaque index (PI) were recorded. Resistin and TNF-α were analyzed in GCF and saliva samples by ELISA. RESULTS Obese children had higher BMI percentiles than normal weight children (p < 0.0001). PPD, GI, PI, GCF volume, GCF, and salivary resistin and TNF-α levels were similar between obese and normal weight children (P > 0.05). OG and NWG subgroups had significantly higher GI, PI, GCF volume, GCF resistin total amounts, and salivary resistin concentrations but lower GCF resistin and TNF-α concentrations than OH and NWH (P < 0.0001 for all). GCF resistin total amounts were positively correlated with GI, PI, and GCF TNF-α total amounts (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study evaluated the levels of resistin in GCF and saliva of children. Obesity is not associated with GCF and salivary resistin and TNF-α levels in children in the presence of gingival inflammation.

Abstract
Background: Resistin, a cysteine-rich polypeptide encoded by the RETN gene, which plays an important role in many mechanisms in rodent studies, including lipid metabolism, inflammation and insulin resistance. Nevertheless, the relationship between resistin and insulin resistance in humans is under debate. The present study was designed to clarify the correlation between resistin and insulin resistance. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library until March 3, 2019 with the keywords "resistin" and "insulin resistance." Funnel plots and Egger's test were used to detect publication bias. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled effect size. Subgroup analysis and meta regression was performed to identify the sources of heterogeneity. Results: Fifteen studies were included in our systematic review. Among them, 10 studies with Pearson coefficients were used for meta-analysis. We found resistin levels were weakly correlated with insulin resistance in those with T2DM and obesity (r = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.06-0.35, I 2 = 59.7%, P = 0.003). Nevertheless, subgroup analysis suggested that circulating resistin levels were significantly positively correlated with insulin resistance in individuals with hyperresistinemia (≥14.8 ng/ml) (r = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.35-0.68, I 2 = 0.0%, P = 0.513). And there was no relationship between circulating resistin and insulin resistance in those with normal circulating resistin levels (<14.8 ng/ml) (r = 0.08, 95% CI: -0.01-0.18, I 2 = 0.0%, P = 0.455). Publication bias was insignificant (Egger's test P = 0.592). Conclusion: In T2DM and obese individuals, resistin levels were positively correlated with insulin resistance in those with hyperresistinemia, but not in those with normal circulating resistin levels.

Abstract
Adipose tissue (AT) is one of the largest endocrine organs contributing to metabolic homeostasis. The functional pleiotropism of AT depends on its ability to secrete a large number of hormones, cytokines, extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors, all influencing many local and systemic physiological and pathophysiological processes. In condition of chronic positive energy balance, adipocyte expansion, hypoxia, apoptosis and stress all lead to AT inflammation and dysfunction, and it has been demonstrated that this sick fat is a main risk factor for many metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty liver, cardiovascular disease and cancer. AT dysfunction is tightly associated with aberrant secretion of bioactive peptides, the adipocytokines, and their blood concentrations often reflect the expression in the AT. Despite the existence of an association between AT dysfunction and systemic pro-inflammatory state, most of the circulating molecules detectable in obese and dysmetabolic individuals do not identify specifically the condition of sick fat. Based on this premise, this review provides a concise overview of "classic" and novel promising adipocytokines associated with AT inflammation and discusses possible critical approaches to their interpretation in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory is one of the main cause of aortic valve stenosis (AS), so discovering novel biomarkers for the targeted therapy of inflammation could be an attractive strategy in AS prevention. The objectives of our study were to clarify the modulatory role of resistin and silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) before and after surgery and also to evaluate the therapeutic effects of resveratrol. METHODS Nineteen AS patients and 15 healthy subjects were studied as the case and control groups, respectively. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated and cultured to determine the levels of resistin and SIRT1 and the effects of resveratrol on them. RESULTS Significant increase in resistin expression was observed in the patients compare to the control (p ≤0.01), and this upregulation was augmented 72 h following surgery (p ≤0.01). The SIRT1 expression decreased in the AS group compare to the control but this reduction was not significant. Aortic valve replacement caused a higher decrease in the protein (p ≤0.01) and mRNA level (p ≤0.05) of SIRT1. Resveratrol in the AS group significantly diminished the resistin level (p ≤0.05) but increased the SIRT1 level (p ≤0.001). CONCLUSIONS In our patients with AS, the resistin level was increased, whereas the expression of SIRT1 was reduced and surgery augmented these alterations. Resveratrol improved inflammation in the PBMCs of the patients through the SIRT1/resistin pathway. These findings suggest that pharmacological therapy with resveratrol might be a novel approach to alleviating inflammation in patients with AS.

Abstract
Obesity is increasingly prevalent and is associated with substantial cardiovascular risk. Adipose tissue distribution and morphology play a key role in determining the degree of adverse effects, and a key factor in the disease process appears to be the inflammatory cell population in adipose tissue. Healthy adipose tissue secretes a number of vasoactive adipokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and changes to this secretory profile will contribute to pathogenesis in obesity. In this review, we discuss the links between adipokine dysregulation and the development of hypertension and diabetes and explore the potential for manipulating adipose tissue morphology and its immune cell population to improve cardiovascular health in obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether obesity in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is independently associated with worse patient-reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS Data were derived from a prospective study of adult women with a diagnosis of SLE that was verified by medical record review. Two established definitions for obesity were used: fat mass index (FMI) ≥13 kg/m2 and body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 . Dependent variables included 4 validated PROs: disease activity as assessed by the Systemic Lupus Activity Questionnaire (SLAQ), depressive symptoms as assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), pain as assessed by the Short Form 36 (SF-36) pain subscale, and fatigue as assessed by the SF-36 vitality subscale. We used multivariable linear regression to evaluate the associations of obesity with PROs, while controlling for potential confounders (age, race, education, income, smoking, disease duration, disease damage, and prednisone use). RESULTS The analysis included 148 participants, 32% of whom were obese. In the multivariate regression model, obesity was associated with worse scores for each PRO. Mean adjusted scores for the SLAQ and CES-D comparing obese versus non-obese participants were 14.8 versus 11.5 (P = 0.01) and 19.8 versus 13.1 (P < 0.01), respectively. The obese group also reported worse mean adjusted scores for pain (38.7 versus 44.2; P < 0.01) and fatigue (39.6 versus 45.2; P = 0.01). CONCLUSION In a representative sample of women with SLE, obesity (as defined by both FMI and BMI) was independently associated with worse PROs, including disease activity, depressive symptoms, and symptoms of pain and fatigue. Obesity may represent a modifiable target for improving outcomes among obese women with SLE.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains as the first cause of death among infectious diseases worldwide. Global incidence of tuberculosis is in part coincident with incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Incidence of T2D is recognized as a high-risk factor that may contribute to tuberculosis dissemination. However, mechanisms which favor infection under T2D are just starting to emerge. Here, we first discuss the evidences that are available to support a metabolic connection between TB and T2D. Then, we analyze the evidences of metabolic changes which occur during T2D gathered thus far for its influence on susceptibility to M. tuberculosis infection and TB progression, such as hyperglycemia, increase of 1AC levels, increase of triglycerides levels, reduction of HDL-cholesterol levels, increased concentration of lipoproteins, and modification of the activity of some hormones related to the control of metabolic homeostasis. Finally, we recognize possible advantages of metabolic management of immunity to develop new strategies for treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of tuberculosis.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory autoimmune disease associated with increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Here, we investigated the effect of the combination of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors and metformin on the rate of admission in patients with RA and T2DM and compared it with that of only COX-2 inhibitors.In total, 1268 subjects with RA and T2DM under COX-2 inhibitor and metformin therapy were selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, along with 2536 patients as 1:2 sex-, age-, and index year-matched controls without metformin therapy. Cox proportional hazard analysis was used to compare the rate of admission during the 10 years of follow-up.At the end of the follow-up, 72 enrolled subjects (1.89%) had admission, including 9 from the combination group (0.71%) and 63 from the COX-2 inhibitor group (2.48%). The combination group was associated with a lower rate of admission at the end of follow-up (P < .001). Cox proportional hazard regression analysis revealed the lower rate of admission for subjects under combination therapy (adjusted hazard ratio of 0.275; 95% confidence interval = 0.136-0.557, P < .001).Patients with RA and T2DM receiving the combination of COX-2 inhibitors and metformin were associated with lower admission rate than those on COX-2 inhibitors alone, and this effect may be attributed to the decrease in the levels of proinflammatory factors.

Abstract
It is well known that adipokines are endocrine factors that are mainly secreted by white adipose tissue. Their central role in energy metabolism is currently accepted. More recently, their involvement in fertility regulation and the development of some reproductive disorders has been suggested. Data concerning the role of leptin and adiponectin, the two most studied adipokines, in the control of the reproductive axis are consistent. In recent years, interest has grown about some novel adipokines, chemerin, visfatin, resistin and apelin, which have been found to be strongly associated with obesity and insulin-resistance. Here, we will review their expression and role in male and female reproduction in humans and animal models. According to accumulating evidence, they could regulate the secretion of GnRH (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone), gonadotropins and steroids. Furthermore, their expression and that of their receptors (if known), has been demonstrated in the human and animal hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Like leptin and adiponectin, these novel adipokines could thus represent metabolic sensors that are able to regulate reproductive functions according to energy balance changes. Therefore, after investigating their role in normal fertility, we will also discuss their possible involvement in some reproductive troubles known to be associated with features of metabolic syndrome, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia and intra-uterine growth retardation in women, and sperm abnormalities and testicular pathologies in men.

Abstract
Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is associated with modulation of levels of adipokines, specifically adiponectin and leptin, but the effect of standard antituberculosis treatment (ATT) on the systemic levels of adiponectin, resistin, and leptin has not been well explored. To identify the association of adipokines with PTB and their relationship with disease severity and bacterial burden, we measured the levels of adiponectin, resistin, and leptin in PTB individuals and compared them with latent tuberculosis (LTB) and healthy control (HC) individuals. Pulmonary tuberculosis was characterized by diminished circulating levels of adiponectin and leptin and heightened circulating levels of resistin in comparison to that in LTB and HC individuals. However, PTB with bilateral or cavitary disease did not exhibit any increased systemic levels of these adipokines in comparison with those with unilateral or non-cavitary disease, respectively. In addition, none of the adipokines exhibited a positive correlation with bacterial burdens, but adiponectin alone exhibited a negative correlation with body mass index in PTB individuals. Finally, on successful completion of ATT, PTB individuals exhibited significantly increased levels of adiponectin and leptin and significantly decreased levels of resistin. Therefore, our data identify an important association of systemic adipokine levels with PTB disease and its alteration following ATT.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to investigate the serum and vitreous levels of resistin in patients with the proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and to compare those with age-matched control subjects. METHODS The study included 45 eyes with PDR (group 1) and a control group of 22 (group 2). All eyes underwent vitrectomy surgery. The lipid profile, fasting blood glucose (FBG), HbA1c and resistin levels were investigated in blood samples of all subjects. Complete ophthalmological examinations were evaluated. Vitreous samples were collected from both groups during vitrectomy surgery and resistin levels were investigated in those samples. The results were evaluated using SPSS 9.0 software. RESULTS The demographic characteristics of the diabetic group and the control group were similar (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in respect of mean visual acuity (VA), body mass index (BMI) values, or lipid profiles (p ˃ 0.05). There was no measurable value of resistin in the vitreous samples of all the eyes. The mean blood resistin level was 367 ng/ml in the control group and 387 ng/ml in the study group and the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In the light of the findings of this study, it can be assumed that resistin did not pass through the vitreous at measurable levels. However, the serum resistin levels of the diabetic patients were higher than those of the control group although not statistically significant. Therefore, it can be considered that resistin does not play a major role in retinal neovascularization.

Abstract
Rheumatic diseases encompass a diverse group of chronic disorders that commonly affect musculoskeletal structures. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two most common, leading to considerable functional limitations and irreversible disability when patients are unsuccessfully treated. Although the specific causes of many rheumatic conditions remain unknown, it is generally accepted that immune mechanisms and/or uncontrolled inflammatory responses are involved in their etiology and symptomatology. In this regard, the bidirectional communication between neuroendocrine and immune system has been demonstrated to provide a homeostatic network that is involved in several pathological conditions. Adipokines represent a wide variety of bioactive, immune and inflammatory mediators mainly released by adipocytes that act as signal molecules in the neuroendocrine-immune interactions. Adipokines can also be synthesized by synoviocytes, osteoclasts, osteoblasts, chondrocytes and inflammatory cells in the joint microenvironment, showing potent modulatory properties on different effector cells in OA and RA pathogenesis. Effects of adiponectin, leptin, resistin and visfatin on local and systemic inflammation are broadly described. However, more recently, other adipokines, such as progranulin, chemerin, lipocalin-2, vaspin, omentin-1 and nesfatin, have been recognized to display immunomodulatory actions in rheumatic diseases. This review highlights the latest relevant findings on the role of the adipokine network in the pathophysiology of OA and RA.

Abstract
Male C57BL/6J mice were used to determine the possible therapeutic effects of our previously described tart cherry extract in a chronic obesity mouse model on metabolic parameters, glucose tolerance, inflammatory mediators, and antioxidant capacity. The control group received standard mouse chow, and the high fat control group was switched to a high fat diet and tap water supplemented with 5% sucrose. The high fat + anthocyanin group received the high fat and sucrose diet, but received the anthocyanin-rich tart cherry extract dissolved in their drinking water. After six weeks, an oral glucose tolerance test was performed, and the water-soluble antioxidant capacity (ACW), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and the plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide, leptin, IL-6, MCP-1, adiponectin and resistin were measured. The high fat diet increased body weight, reduced glucose tolerance, and caused an elevation in leptin, IL-6, MCP-1, and resistin levels. Furthermore, antioxidant capacity was decreased with a significant elevation of SOD activity. Anthocyanin treatment failed to reverse the effects of the high fat diet on body weight and glucose tolerance, but significantly reduced the leptin and IL-6 levels. The tart cherry extract also made a significant enhancement in antioxidant capacity and SOD activity. Our results show that chronic anthocyanin intake has a potential to enhance redox status and alleviate inflammation associated with obesity.

Abstract
Background The bone marrow (BM) is a major reservoir of resting memory T cells and long-lived plasma cells, capable of providing protection against recurrent infections. Whether the age-related accumulation of adipose tissue in the BM affects the functionality and maintenance of memory cells is not well understood. Methods For the first time, we compare human femur marrow adipose tissue (fMAT) and subcutaneous white adipose tissue of the thigh (tsWAT) obtained from the same donors. Therefore, we used microarrays for comparative global gene expression analysis, and employed assays to analyse parameters of adipocyte biology, inflammation and oxidative stress. Findings We show that fMAT adipocytes differ significantly from tsWAT adipocytes regarding specific gene expression profiles including inflammatory responses and adipogenesis/adipocyte phenotype. Concomitant with considerably lower levels of CD36, a membrane-associated protein important for long-chain fatty acid uptake that is used as maturation marker, fMAT adipocytes are smaller and contain less triglycerides. fMAT adipocytes secrete similar levels of adiponectin and leptin as tsWAT adipocytes, and express increased levels of pro-inflammatory molecules concomitant with an elevated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impaired function of plasma cells in the BM. Interpretation Our findings suggest that fMAT is a unique type of adipose tissue containing small adipocytes with lower CD36 protein and triglyceride levels than tsWAT but high adipokine secretion. Moreover, fMAT adipocytes secrete high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to inflammation and impairment of plasma cell function in the BM, suggesting that fMAT has more immune regulatory functions than tsWAT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep-related breathing disorders are very common and highly associated with many comorbid diseases. They have many metabolic consequences that impact appetite, energy expenditure, and systemic inflammation. These consequences are mediated through peptides (eg, ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, resistin, apelin, obestatin, and neuropeptide Y). METHODS We searched the literature (PubMed) for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and metabolic peptides and included 15, 22, 14, 4 and 2 articles for ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and apelin respectively. RESULTS Our review of the published literature suggests that leptin levels seem to correlate with body mass index and adiposity rather than obstructive sleep apnea. Conversely, levels of adiponectin and ghrelin are influenced by obstructive sleep apnea alone. Finally, resistin and apelin seem to be not correlated with obstructive sleep apnea. Regarding positive airway pressure (PAP) impact, it seems that PAP therapy affected the levels of these peptides (mainly ghrelin). CONCLUSIONS There is significant controversy in the literature regarding the impact of SDB and PAP therapy on these metabolic peptides. This could be due to the lack of randomized clinical trials and the variability of the methodology used in these studies. Further research is needed to assess the impact of SDB and PAP therapy on the levels of these peptides and whether this impact is also related to body mass index and body fat composition.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that is increasingly being recognized as a disease that not only affects the skin but also has multi-systemic implications. The pathophysiological link between psoriasis and obesity is becoming increasingly elucidated by recent studies. The cross-talk between adipocytes and the immune system via various mediators such as adipokines could explain how obesity contributes to psoriasis. The effects of obesity on adipocytes include upregulation of pro-inflammatory adipokines such as leptin and resistin, downregulation of anti-inflammatory adipokine, and also the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine production by macrophages. This article provides an update on the role of adipose tissues in psoriasis.

Abstract
Though historically regarded as an inert energy store, adipose tissue is a complex endocrine organ, which is increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Accumulating evidence points to visceral adipose tissue and specifically to its mesenteric component, or “creeping fat” as impacting on the disease course through its immunomodulatory properties. On the one hand, mesenteric fat acts as a physical barrier to inflammation and is involved in controlling host immune response to translocation of gut bacteria. On the other hand, however, there exists a strong link between visceral fat and complicated course of the disease with unfavorable therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, “creeping fat” appears to play different roles in different IBD phenotypes, with the greatest pathogenetic contribution probably to an ileal form of Crohn’s disease. In this review, we summarize and discuss the existing literature on the subject and identify high-priority areas for future research. It may be that a better understanding of the role of mesenteric fat in IBD will determine new therapeutic targets and translate into improved clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a chronic, expensive, and high-incidence musculoskeletal disorder largely responsible for back/neck and radicular-related pain. It is characterized by progressive degenerative damage of intervertebral tissues along with metabolic alterations of all other vertebral tissues. Despite the high socio-economic impact of IVDD, little is known about its etiology and pathogenesis, and currently, no cure or specific treatments are available. Recent evidence indicates that besides abnormal and excessive mechanical loading, inflammation may be a crucial player in IVDD. Furthermore, obese adipose tissue is characterized by a persistent and low-grade production of systemic pro-inflammatory factors. In this context, chronic low-grade inflammation associated with obesity has been hypothesized as an important contributor to IVDD through different, but still unknown, mechanisms. Adipokines, such as leptin, produced prevalently by white adipose tissues, but also by other cells of mesenchymal origin, particularly cartilage and bone, are cytokine-like hormones involved in important physiologic and pathophysiological processes. Although initially restricted to metabolic functions, adipokines are now viewed as key players of the innate and adaptative immune system and active modulators of the acute and chronic inflammatory response. The goal of this review is to summarize the most recent findings regarding the interrelationships among inflammation, obesity and the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the IVDD, with particular emphasis on the contribution of adipokines and their potential as future therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Background Adipose tissue-derived adipokines are pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in metabolic-related diseases and can be influenced by diet and exercise. We aimed to compare the effect of a Mediterranean (MdM) compared with Fast Food (FFM) meal on the exercise induced adipokines changes. Methods In a double blinded cross over trial, 46 participants were randomly assigned to one of two standardized iso-energy pre-exercise meals: FFM or MdM-type. Three hours after each meal, participants completed a treadmill exercise test (EC). Serum adiponectin, resistin, PAI-1, lipocalin-2/NGAL and adipsin were determined by Luminex magnetic bead immunoassay. Wilcoxon signed rank test compared changes before/after meal and before/after EC and a linear mixed model evaluated the effect of meals on the adipokine response to exercise, adjusted for confounders. Results Thirty-nine participants (mean age of 25, with a standard deviation of 5 years) completed the trial (56% females). For both interventions, a significant reduction of adipsin after each meal and a significant increase of lipocalin, PAI-1, adipsin and resistin, after exercise was observed. When exercise was preceded by a MdM meal a higher increase in adipsin levels was seen. Conclusion Acute exercise induced an increase of circulatory levels of adipsin, resistin, lipocalin and PAI-1, but not adiponectin. A pre-exercise Mediterranean meal potentiated the increase of adipsin after the exercise test, which possibly relates to the immune regulatory role of adipsin. These changes suggest a cross-talk between the immune and metabolic immediate response to exercise and its modulation by the pre-exercise diet composition.

Abstract
The infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) is a periarticular adipose knee tissue. This tissue contains a large number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In the present work, we wanted to study the IPFP MSCs and their relationship and differences in two groups, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures knees and ostheoarthrosis (OA). The IPFP of 42 patients with OA or ACL rupture were analyzed. Isolation, primary culture, and a genetic and proteomic study of MSCs from IPFP were performed. Gene expression of IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IL-8, HSPA1A (Hsp70), CXCL10, RANTES, MMP1, MMP3, TIMP1, and BMP7 was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). We analyzed MSCs from from 12 diferents patients in two cellular pools (6 from AO disease and 6 from ALC rupture to form two cell pool), for the iTRAQ Proteomic Assay. The conditional media were used in quantitative analysis of MSC soluble factors by Luminex and for de migration assay. A higher gene expression of IL-6, TNF, CXCL10, RANTES, and MMP1 and OPG in MSCs from OA versus ACL (p < 0.05) was observed. Conversely HSPA1A, TIMP1, and RANKL showed a significant lower expression in OA-MSCs (p < 0.05). In the secretome analysis, adipsin and visfantin levels in the supernatants from OA-MSCs were lower (p < 0.05) respect to ACL-MSCs. Also, the monocytic cells migrated two-folds in the presence of conditioned media from OA-MSCs patients versus patients with ACL-MSC. The infrapatellar pad should be considered as an adipose tissue capable of producing and excreting inflammatory mediators directly in the knee joint, influencing the development and progression of knee joint pathologies.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious health concern globally and is recognized by degradation of articular cartilage, bone remodeling and synovial inflammation. Resistin is an adipokine that shown to be involved in inflammatory process associated with OA. Aim of the current study was to estimate the link of resistin gene polymorphisms (- 420 C>G, + 299 G>A) with genetic susceptibility of knee OA in a Pakistani population. 280 patients and 308 age and sex matched controls were recruited in this case-control study. Genotype and allele frequencies were evaluated by Polymerase chain reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism. Resistin concentration was measured by immunoassay. A significant difference in allele and genotype frequency was observed for both study groups. Resistin - 420 mutant genotype was associated with an increased susceptibility to OA (p = 0.001). Similarly, resistin + 299 GA + AA genotypes showed a relation with an elevated risk of knee OA compared to GG genotype (p = 0.01). Moreover, the mutant alleles frequency was significantly high in patient group as compared to healthy individuals for both loci (p < 0.01). Resistin - 420/+ 299 alleles haplotype analysis demonstrated that mutant alleles were more prevalent in OA affected individuals compared to healthy subjects (p < 0.05). The serum resistin levels were not remarkably different in patient vs. control group (p = 0.9). Further, the circulating resistin level was not found to be influenced by - 420G and + 299A alleles and non significant differences were observed in resistin concentration in mutant vs. wild type genotypes for both SNPs (p > 0.05). Our data suggest an association between investigated resistin genetic variants and knee OA susceptibility in our population. This is the first report to show association between investigated single nucleotide polymorphisms and OA among any population.

Abstract
Currently, coronary artery disease accounts for a large proportion of deaths occurring worldwide. Damage to the heart muscle over a short period of time leads to myocardial infarction (MI). The biological mechanisms of atherosclerosis, one of the causes of MI, have been well studied. Resistin, a type of adipokine, is closely associated with intravascular level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and augmentation of the expression of adhesion molecules in endothelial cells. Therefore, resistin, which is highly associated with inflammation, can progress into coronary artery disease. Adenylyl cyclase associated protein 1, a binding partner of resistin, also plays an important role in inducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. The induction of these cytokines can aggravate atherosclerosis by promoting severe plaque rupture of the lesion site. Recently, drugs, such as statins that can inhibit inflammation have been extensively studied. The development of effective new drugs that can directly or indirectly block pro-inflammatory cytokines may have a great potential in the treatment of coronary artery disease in the future.

Abstract
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions and its prevalence is climbing. Obesity is characterized by hypertrophied adipocytes with a dysregulated adipokine secretion profile, increased recruitment of inflammatory cells, and impaired metabolic homeostasis that eventually results in the development of systemic insulin resistance, a phenotype of type 2 diabetes. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is an enzyme that converts L-arginine to nitric oxide (NO), which functions to maintain vascular and adipocyte homeostasis. Arginase is a ureohydrolase enzyme that competes with NOS for L-arginine. Arginase activity/expression is upregulated in obesity, which results in diminished bioavailability of NO, impairing both adipocyte and vascular endothelial cell function. Given the emerging role of NO in the regulation of adipocyte physiology and metabolic capacity, this review explores the interplay between arginase and NO, and their effect on the development of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and mitochondrial dysfunction in obesity. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved in the development of obesity-induced metabolic and vascular dysfunction is necessary for the identification of more effective and tailored therapeutic avenues for their prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Systemic sclerosis is a multiorgan autoimmune disease characterized by vasculopathy and tissue fibrosis of unknown etiology. Recently, adipokines (cell signaling proteins secreted by adipose tissue) have attracted much attention as a cytokine family contributing to the various pathological processes of systemic sclerosis. Adipokines, such as leptin, adiponectin, resistin, adipsin, visfatin or chemerin are a heterogenic group of molecules. Adiponectin exhibits anti-fibrotic features and affects inflammatory reactions. Leptin promotes fibrosis and inflammation. Resistin was linked to vascular involvement in systemic sclerosis. Visfatin was associated with regression of skin lesions in late-stage systemic sclerosis. Chemerin appears as a marker of increased risk of impaired renal function and development of skin sclerosis in the early stage of systemic sclerosis. Vaspin was indicated to have a protective role in digital ulcers development. Novel adipokines-adipsin, apelin, omentin and CTRP-3-are emerging as molecules potentially involved in SSc pathogenesis. Serum adipokine levels may be used as predictive and diagnostic factors in systemic sclerosis. However, further investigations are required to establish firm correlations between distinct adipokines and systemic sclerosis.
