Partition equilibriums of nonionic organic compounds between soil organic matter and water

Carbaryl, 2,4-D, and Triclopyr adsorption in thatch-soil ecosystems

Thatch development in intensively managed turf sites may cause environmental concerns for greater sorption or leaching of applied chemicals in terrestrial ecosystems. To determine the adsorption potential of Carbaryl (1-Napthyl N-methylcarbamate), 2,4-D (2,4-dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid), and Triclopyr (3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyloxyacetic acid) in turf ecosystems, composite thatch and underlying soil samples from three-and six-year-old stands of cool-season Southshore creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) and warm-season Meyer zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) were collected. The samples were processed and analyzed for total organic carbon (COrg); extractable (CExt), humic (CHA) and fulvic acid (CFA); anthrone reactive nonhumic carbon (ARC) fractions; and CHA and CFA associated iron (Fe) contents. Pesticide adsorption capacity (Kf) and intensity (1/n), organic carbon partition coefficient (KOC) and Gibbs free energy change (deltaG) were calculated for thatch materials and the underlying soils using a modified batch/flow technique. Both bentgrass (BT) and zoysiagrass thatch (ZT) contained a greater concentration of CExt, CFA, CHA, and ARC than the respective soils (BS and ZS). The CExt, CFA, CHA, and ARC concentration was higher in BT compared with ZT. The BT contained a greater concentration of bound Fe in both CFA and CHA fractions than in BS, whereas ZT had more bound Fe in CHA fraction than in ZS. On average, the BT had a greater concentration of bound Fe in CExt, CFA, and CHA fractions than in the ZT. Among the pesticides, Carbaryl had higher Kf and 1/n values than 2,4-D and Triclopyr for both thatch and soil. Although the KOC and deltaG values of Carbaryl were higher in both BT and ZT than in the underlying soils, the KOC and deltaG values of 2,4-D were significantly higher in BS and ZS than in the overlying thatch materials. The 2,4-D and Triclopyr had higher leaching indices (LI) than Carbaryl for both BT and ZT materials than the respective soils. The Carbaryl, however, had a higher LI for soils than for thatch materials. Averaged across thatch materials and soils, COrg accounted for 96, 85, and 84% variations in Carbaryl, 2,4-D, and Triclopyr adsorption, respectively. Among the COrg fractions, lignin followed by CFA and CHA accounted for greater adsorption of pesticides, especially Carbaryl. The concentration of CHA and CFA bound Fe did not correlate with Kf and 1/n values of pesticides.

Effects of competitor and natural organic matter characteristics on the equilibrium sorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene in soil and shale

The competitive sorption behaviors of 1,2-DCB in binary solute systems in four natural sorbents having natural organic matter (NOM) matrixes of different physicochemical characters were investigated in batch reactors. Specifically, the study focused on investigating how the extent of 1,2-DCB competitive sorption depends on (i) the rigidity of NOM matrixes as assessed by the efficiency of chemical oxidation and (ii) the closeness of competitor structure to that of the primary solute. The chemical oxidation and elemental composition results suggest that the shale NOM is the most reduced and condensed, the peat was the most oxidized and amorphous, and two surface soils had intermediate NOM structures. Four chlorinated benzenes and phenanthrene were used as competing solutes. All five chemicals exhibited competition against 1,2-DCB in all sorbents, including the peat, but the extent of competition varied significantly. Little difference in the extent of competition with 1,2-DCB was observed for the various chlorinated benzenes even though some were liquids and some were solids at the experimental temperature. All of the chlorobenzenes were more effective competitors than phenanthrene. The shale showed markedly different competition features from the other sorbents, with a much smaller competitive effect at a given sorbed volume of competitor. However, normalizing sorbed competitor volumes by the capacity of the adsorption domain in the Polanyi-Manes single-solute partition-adsorption model (V0) produced qualitatively similar competitive behavior for each solute; displacement of 1,2-DCB increased with increasing sorbed competitor volumes up to V0, and little additional competition occurred beyond that point. The extent of competition was positively correlated with the maximum adsorption capacity and the fraction of "hard" and "soot" carbon contents as assessed by chemical and thermal oxidation methods. These findings indicate that competition is associated with voids in the NOM structure, that these voids are likely present within the condensed ("hard" plus "soot") carbon domain, and therefore that diagenetic alteration of NOM plays a central role in determining competitive sorption characteristics for hydrophobic contaminants.

Sorbed atrazine shifts into non-desorbable sites of soil organic matter during aging

Soil-chemical contact time (aging) is an important determinant of the sorption and desorption characteristics of the organic contaminants and pesticides in the environment. The effects of aging on mechanism-specific sorption and desorption of atrazine were studied in soil and clay slurries. Sorption isotherm and desorption kinetic experiments were performed, and soil-water distribution coefficients and desorption rate parameters were evaluated using linear and non-linear sorption equations and a three-site desorption model, respectively. Aging time for sorption of atrazine in sterilized soil and clay slurries ranged from 2 days to 8 months. Atrazine sorption isotherms were nearly linear (r(2)>0.97) and sorption coefficients were strongly correlated to soil organic carbon content. Sorption distribution coefficients (K(d)) increased with increase in age in all five soils studied, but not for K-montmorillonite. Sorption non-linearity did not increase with increase in age except for the Houghton muck soil. Desorption profiles were well described by the three-site desorption model. The equilibrium site fraction (f(eq)) decreased and the non-desorbable site fraction (f(nd)) increased as a function of aging time in all soils. For K-montmorillonite, f(nd) approximately 0 regardless of aging, showing that aging phenomena are sorbent/mechanism specific. In all soils, it was found that when normalized to soil organic matter content, the concentration of atrazine in desorbable sites was relatively constant, whereas that in non-desorbable site increased. This, and the lack of aging effects on desorption from montmorillonite, suggests that sorption into non-desorbable sites of soil organic matter is primary source of increased atrazine sorption in soils during aging.

Geochemical modulation of pesticide sorption on smectite clay

Pesticide adsorption by soil clays can be dramatically influenced by the exchangeable cations present. Among the common exchangeable base cations in soils (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+), K+-saturated clays frequently demonstrate the strongest affinity for pesticides. In the presence of multiple exchangeable cations in the system, we hypothesize that the magnitude of pesticide sorption to soil minerals is proportional to the fraction of clay interlayers saturated with K+ ions. To test this hypothesis, we measured sorption of three pesticides with different polarities (dichlobenil, monuron, and biphenyl) by homoionic K- and Ca-smectite (SWy-2) in KCl/CaCl2 aqueous solutions. The presence of different amounts of KCl and CaCl2 resulted in varying populations of K+ and Ca2+ on the clay exchange sites. The sorption of dichlobenil and, to a lesser extent monuron, increased with the fraction of K+ on clay mineral exchange sites. Ca- and K-SWy-2 displayed the same sorption capacities for nonpolar biphenyl. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that at lower fractions of K+-saturation, exchangeable K+ ions were randomly distributed in clay interlayers and did not enhance pesticide sorption. At higher populations of K+ (vs Ca2+), demixing occurred causing some clay interlayers, regions, or tactoids to become fully saturated by K+, manifesting greatly enhanced pesticide sorption. The forward and reverse cation exchange reactions influenced not only K+ and Ca2+ populations on clays but also the nanostructures of clay quasicrystals in aqueous solution which plays an important, if not dominant, role in controlling the extent of pesticide sorption. Modulating the cation type and composition on clay mineral surfaces through cation exchange processes provides an environmental-safe protocol to manipulate the mobility and availability of polar pesticides, which could have applications for pesticide formulation and in environmental remediation.

Investigation of sorption behavior between pyrene and colloidal organic carbon from activated sludge processes

The sorption behavior of pyrene for different size fractions of colloidal organic carbon (COC) originating from two biological wastewater treatment facilities (a full-scale activated sludge system (FSAS) and a membrane bioreactor (MBR)) was investigated by fluorescence quenching. Fluorescence lifetime measurements demonstrated a dynamic quenching component in all samples, including the colloidal-free filtrates. COC sorption coefficients (Kcoc) for pyrene ranged from <1 x 10(3) L/kgcoc to 80 x 10(3) L/kgcoc and were comparable to values obtained in the literature for natural organic matter. Both linear and nonlinear behaviors were observed in the Freundlich-described converted isotherms (n = 0.89-2.1). The aromatic content of COC was quantified by the molar extinction coefficient at 280 nm (e280). Good correlations were observed between COC-pyrene sorption coefficients and e280 coefficients, suggesting that e280 may be a useful tool for predicting colloidal transport of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) from activated sludge systems. The removal of COC from treated effluents may appreciably reduce the concentrations of HOCs discharged to receiving streams.

Formation of bound residues by naphthalene and cis-naphthalene-1,2-dihydrodiol

The formation of bound residues by naphthalene and its metabolite, cis-naphthalene-1,2-dihydrodiol, in a sediment (1% OC), a silty loam soil (2.9% OC) and a peat (26% OC) was examined. The experiments were carried out under both sterile and nonsterile conditions for up to 35 days. The samples containing bound contaminant were hydrolyzed at an alkaline pH and fractionated using 3,000 and 500 Da molecular weight cutoff ultrafiltration membranes in series. The results for all the geosorbents examined showed that bound residue formation is low for naphthalene and between 5 and 20 times higher for the metabolite. The amount of bound residues released by hydrolysis was higher for the metabolite than for the parent compound for all the samples. The molecular weight distribution of bound radioactivity after hydrolysis showed binding to the high molecular weight components of the sediment organic matter and to the low molecular weight components for soil and peat organic matter when incubated with cis-naphthalene-1,2-dihydrodiol. Experiments performed with naphthalene-UL-(14)C showed larger amounts of bound residue found than in experiments with naphthalene-1-(14)C.

Compositions and sorptive properties of crop residue-derived chars

Chars originating from the burning or pyrolysis of vegetation may significantly sorb neutral organic contaminants (NOCs). To evaluate the relationship between the char composition and NOC sorption, a series of char samples were generated by pyrolyzing a wheat residue (Triticum aestivum L.) for 6 h at temperatures between 300 degrees C and 700 degrees C and analyzed for their elemental compositions, surface areas, and surface functional groups. The samples were then studied for their abilities to sorb benzene and nitrobenzene from water. A commercial activated carbon was used as a reference carbonaceous sample. The char samples produced at high pyrolytic temperatures (500-700 degrees C) were well carbonized and exhibited a relatively high surface area (>300 m2/g), little organic matter (<3%), and low oxygen content (< or = 10%). By contrast, the chars formed at low temperatures (300-400 degrees C) were only partially carbonized, showing significantly different properties (<200 m2/g surface area, 40-50% organic carbon, and >20% oxygen). The char samples exhibited a significant range of surface acidity/basicity because of their different surface polar-group contents, as characterized by the Boehm titration data and the NMR and FTIR spectra. The NOC sorption by high-temperature chars occurred almost exclusively by surface adsorption on carbonized surfaces, whereas the sorption by low-temperature chars resulted from the surface adsorption and the concurrent smaller partition into the residual organic-matter phase. The chars appeared to have a higher surface affinity for a polar solute (nitrobenzene) than for a nonpolar solute (benzene), the difference being related to the surface acidity/basicity of the char samples.

A PCE groundwater plume discharging to a river: influence of the streambed and near-river zone on contaminant distributions

An investigation of a tetrachloroethene (PCE) groundwater plume originating at a dry cleaning facility on a sand aquifer and discharging to a river showed that the near-river zone strongly modified the distribution, concentration, and composition of the plume prior to discharging into the surface water. The plume, streambed concentration, and hydrogeology were extensively characterized using the Waterloo profiler, mini-profiler, conventional and driveable multilevel samplers (MLS), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys, streambed temperature mapping (to identify discharge zones), drivepoint piezometers, and soil coring and testing. The plume observed in the shallow streambed deposits was significantly different from what would have been predicted based on the characteristics of the upgradient plume. Spatial and temporal variations in the plume entering the near-river zone contributed to the complex contaminant distribution observed in the streambed where concentrations varied by factors of 100 to 5000 over lateral distances of less than 1 to 3.5 m. Low hydraulic conductivity semi-confining deposits and geological heterogeneities at depth below the streambed controlled the pattern of groundwater discharge through the streambed and influenced where the plume discharged into the river (even causing the plume to spread out over the full width of the streambed at some locations). The most important effect of the near-river zone on the plume was the extensive anaerobic biodegradation that occurred in the top 2.5 m of the streambed, even though essentially no biodegradation of the PCE plume was observed in the upgradient aquifer. Approximately 54% of the area of the plume in the streambed consisted solely of PCE transformation products, primarily cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) and vinyl chloride (VC). High concentrations in the interstitial water of the streambed did not correspond to high groundwater-discharge zones, but instead occurred in low discharge zones and are likely sorbed or retarded remnants of past high-concentration plume discharges. The high-concentration areas (up to 5529 microg/l of total volatile organics) in the streambed are of ecological concern and represent potential adverse exposure locations for benthic and hyporheic zone aquatic life, but the effect of these exposures on the overall health of the river has yet to be determined. Even if the upgradient source of PCE is remediated and additional PCE is prevented from reaching the streambed, the high-concentration deposits in the streambed will likely take decades to hundreds of years to flush completely clean under natural conditions because these areas have low vertical groundwater flow velocities and high retardation factors. Despite high concentrations of contaminants in the streambed, PCE was detected in the surface water only rarely due to rapid dilution in the river and no cDCE or VC was detected. Neither the sampling of surface water nor the sampling of the groundwater from the aquifer immediately adjacent to the river gave an accurate indication of the high concentrations of PCE biodegradation products present in the streambed. Sampling of the interstitial water of the shallow streambed deposits is necessary to accurately characterize the nature of plumes discharging to rivers.

Effects of mineral surfaces on pyrene partitioning to well-characterized humic substances

Mineral surfaces can alter the ability of humic substances (HS) to bind hydrophobic organic contaminants. In this study, complete adsorption (i.e., to avoid HS adsorptive fractionation effects) of a small subset of well-characterized terrestrial and aquatic HS on kaolinite and hematite significantly changed their subsequent organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients K(ads)(oc) for pyrene relative to their original respective dissolved organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients K(dis)(oc). Parallel experiments with ultrafiltration (UF) fractions obtained from purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) (Aldrich Chemical, Milwaukee, WI) gave similar results. The heterogeneity among the PAHA UF fractions was examined via their mineral surface adsorption characteristics and their subsequent ability to bind pyrene. As expected, variations in maximum adsorption densities (q(max)), Langmuir adsorption constants (K(q)), and pyrene K(ads)(oc) values were observed among the PAHA UF fractions. However, general trends of q(max), K(q), and pyrene log K(ads)(oc) values for the PAHA UF fractions versus the logarithm of their weight-average molecular weights (MW(w)) did not typically match the corresponding trends obtained with the four aquatic and terrestrial HS. In general, an ideal mixture competitive adsorption model gave reasonable predictions for PAHA sorption to kaolinite and hematite based on their corresponding UF isotherm parameters. Ideal mixture predictions of pyrene partitioning to adsorbed PAHA from the corresponding UF fraction results were better for kaolinite versus hematite, indicating that the underlying mineral surface can alter the effects of HS heterogeneity on hydrophobic organic contaminant sorption.

Importance of adsorption (hole-filling) mechanism for hydrophobic organic contaminants on an aquifer kerogen isolate

Sorption and desorption behaviors of four hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) were investigated for an isolated kerogen material from Borden aquifer material with total organic carbon of 0.021%. The solubility-normalized modified Freundlich equation and the combined linear and Polanyi-Dubinin (PD) equation can quite well describe the sorption or desorption isotherms. The partition component is estimated and compared using desorption data, dual-mode modeling, and the reported partition coefficients. The result suggests that the dual-mode modeling and the combined linear and PD modeling may overestimate the partitioning component. The partition component is not so important as assumed before in sorption of HOCs for the studied sorbent. As the fitted PD equation has an exponent parameter b' approaching 1, it is equivalent to the modified Freundlich equation. The small molecules 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) and naphthalene (Naph) have higher adsorption volumes. The lower adsorption volumes for 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and phenanthrene (Phen) suggest that accessibility to the holes of kerogen by large HOC molecules is reduced. The desorption hysteresis is approximately constant for DCB when the relative aqueous concentration ranges from 0.0007 to 0.6, but for Phen is only obvious at higher relative aqueous concentrations. The varied sorption and desorption behaviors for DCB and Phen are satisfactorily explained by an adsorption/ hole filling mechanism and entrapment of some adsorbates in the kerogen matrix and by possible pore deformation mechanism at high concentrations.

Sorption nonlinearity for organic contaminants with diesel soot: method development and isotherm interpretation

An experimentally practical and precise flocculation-based method was developed, tested, and applied to determine phenanthrene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene sorption with NIST SRM 2975 diesel particulate matter. Following an initial equilibration period, polyaluminum chloride (PACI) solution was added to the sorption tubes in order to facilitate the formation of flocculated aggregates of soot particles. After separation of the solids through centrifugation, supernatant concentrations were determined as with conventional batch methods. The flocculation-based method was tested on three kinds of soot and then used to evaluate sorption kinetics and equilibrium with SRM 2975. Kinetic results showed that wetting of the soot required more than 20 days, but that 60 days was sufficient to achieve equilibration with both water and phenanthrene. Sixty-day isotherms for both phenanthrene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene were strongly nonlinear. At approximate 10(-3) of solubility, carbon-normalized distribution coefficients (Koc) were 10-20 times higher than those for absorption to sediment organic matter. Measurements at closer to solubility indicated much lower Koc, suggesting a total sorption capacity at aqueous solubility that is of similar magnitude to that in sediment organic matter. Independent analysis of extractable hydrocarbons suggests that absorption into a native hydrocarbon phase was not a major component of sorption.

Sorption of 17beta-estradiol and 17alpha-ethinylestradiol by colloidal organic carbon derived from biological wastewater treatment systems

Sorption coefficients (K(COC)) between 17beta-estradiol (E2), 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and size-fractionated colloidal organic carbon (COC) derived from two biological wastewater treatment facilities were quantified by fluorescence quenching. The two wastewater treatment systems included a full-scale activated sludge system (FSAS) and a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The K(COC) coefficients were highly variable and ranged between (<1 to 179) x 10(3) L/kgCOC for E2 and (<1 to 430) x 10(3) L/kgCOC for EE2 and were higher than expected from the analytes octanol-water partition coefficient. Correlations between the molar extinction coefficients measured at 280 nm (e280) and K(COC) coefficients were weak but stronger for E2 compared to EE2. Attempts at correlating sorption behavior with colloidal protein and polysaccharide concentrations were only marginally successful (r2 approximately 0.4). These low correlations suggest that aromatic content, protein, or polysaccharide concentration can not adequately explain E2 and EE2 sorption behavior to COC and that other fractions of the organic matter pool play an important role in binding. A substantial portion of the aqueous E2 and EE2 concentrations (up to 60%) may be associated with colloidal material, suggesting that COC may play a role in the fate and transport of E2 and EE2 during the activated sludge process.

Beta-thujaplicin: new quantitative CZE method and adsorption to goethite

Beta-thujaplicin (beta-TH) is a toxic tropolone derivative present in the heartwood of western red cedar (Thuja plicata) and is used as a preservative and antimicrobial additive in a number of commercial goods. beta-TH released from western red cedar timber used outdoor and from other products containing beta-TH may transfer to soil and leach to groundwater and surface waters. The objective of this study was to quantify the adsorption of beta-TH to goethite as a typical model for geosorbents. Adsorption was studied using pH-adjusted goethite suspensions with solid:solution ratios of 1:500, 0.01 M NaNO(3) electrolyte, and 20 degrees C. beta-TH was determined using a new capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method providing a detection limit of 0.21 microM. Near-sorption equilibrium was attained within 48 h. beta-TH showed maximum adsorption at low pH (3.8) and a 70% drop in adsorption from pH 6.2 to 8.8. The Langmuir type adsorption isotherm at pH 5.5 approached a maximum adsorption of 220 micromol/g (= 6.2 micromol/m(2)), which is more than twice the amount of phosphate adsorbed under similar conditions. The affinity of beta-TH for goethite is low as compared with organic ligands such as citrate, oxalate, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoate. The adsorption data and FTIR analyses indicate that beta-TH is most likely adsorbed as monodentate mononuclear surface complexes at the surface of goethite. Hydrophobic adsorption is thought to contribute to the adsorption, in particular at low pH. The strong adsorption of beta-TH to goethite suggests low mobility in most soil environments, the risk of contamination increasing in soils with high pH (calcareous material), low contents of iron and aluminum oxides, phyllosilicates, and organic matter.

Sorption interaction of phenanthrene with soil and sediment of different particle sizes and in various CaCl2 solutions

The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the influences of natural sorbent particle size and system Ca(2+) concentration on sorption of low-polarity organic chemicals. The physicochemical properties of the different particle size soil and sediment subsamples and the surface characters of the soil and sediment samples in various CaCl(2) concentrations were determined. The sorption behavior of phenanthrene (PHN) on the subsamples of different particle size and to the samples in various CaCl(2) solutions was examined. Batch experiments demonstrate that the sorption capacities increase with decreased particle size for both soil and sediment. It is presumably due to the higher total organic carbon (TOC) content for the finer particles. But the enhancements in sorption coefficients are not met with the equal increases in TOC contents. The effect of Ca(2+) on PHN uptake is strong in short contact time but slight in long contact time. With increasing Ca(2+) concentration, the sorption capacities for Beizhai soil increase first in the low Ca(2+) concentration range, and then decline. Nevertheless, the increase of Ca(2+) concentration greatly reduces the uptake of phenanthrene on Guanting sediment over the overall measured range. The different physicochemical properties, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content, mineral and element composition, and surface characters, between soil and sediment may result in this discrepancy.

Soot sorption of non-ortho and ortho substituted PCBs

Field-observations of distribution coefficients well above expectations from bulk organic-matter partitioning for several chlorinated aromatic compound classes have lead to the hypothesis that enhanced affinity to soot may not be limited to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons but may extend as a significant process for a wider range of hydrophobic organic compounds. This suggestion was here tested in soot-column sorption experiments with a series of ortho- and non-ortho substituted polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), using diesel particulate matter (NIST standard reference material SRM-1650) as model soot sorbent. For congeners of similar hydrophobicity, considerably higher affinities toward the soot sorbent were observed for the non-ortho substituted PCBs. Mono- to tetra-ortho substituted PCBs exhibited log-based soot-water distribution coefficients (K(sc)) from 5.25 to 5.51 l/kg(sc) at solute concentrations corresponding to 1-13 microg/l. In contrast, biphenyl, mono- and dichloro- non-ortho substituted PCBs yielded logK(sc) values between 5.09 and 6.35 l/kg(sc). These results are 20-50, and 75-110 times higher, respectively, than the corresponding K(ow)-predicted K(oc) numbers. This strong interaction with soot, particularly of non-ortho substituted PCBs, may fundamentally affect their environmental distribution and bioavailable exposure.

Physicochemical soil parameters affecting sequestration and mycobacterial biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil

Six soils, obtained from grasslands and wooded areas in Northeastern Illinois, were physicochemically characterized. Measured parameters included total organic carbon (TOC) content, contents of humic acid, fulvic acid and humin, pore volume and pore size distribution, and chemical makeup of soil organic matter (determined using solid-state 13C-NMR). Moistened, gamma-sterilized soils were spiked with 200 ppm of either phenanthrene or pyrene (including 14C label); following 0, 40, or 120 days of aging, the contaminant-spiked soils were then inoculated with Mycobacterium austroafricanum strain GTI-23, and evolution of 14CO2 was assessed over a 28-day period. Results for both phenanthrene and pyrene indicated that increased contact time led to increased sequestration and reduced biodegradation, and that TOC content was the most important parameter governing these processes. One soil, although only tested with phenanthrene, showed significantly lower-than-expected sequestration (higher-than-expected mineralization) after 40 days of aging, despite a very high TOC value (>24%). Because the level of sequestration in this soil was proportional to the others after 120 days of aging, this implies some difference in the temporal progression of sequestration in this soil, although not in its final result. The primary distinguishing feature of this soil was its considerably elevated fulvic acid content. Further experiments showed that addition of exogenous fulvic acid to a soil with very low endogenous humic acids/fulvic acids content greatly enhanced pyrene mineralization by M. austroafricanum. Extractabilities of 13 three- to six-ring coal tar PAHs in n-butanol from the six soils after 120 days of sequestration were strongly TOC-dependent; however, there was no discernible correlation between n-butanol extractability and mycobacterial PAH mineralization.

Adsorption mechanism of chloroacetanilide herbicides to modified montmorillonite

This study was undertaken to characterize the adsorption mechanism of alachlor and metolachlor on montmorillonite modified with cationic surfactants. Adsorbed amounts of cationic surfactant on montmorillonite surfaces were determined by CNHSO analyzer. Equilibrium concentrations of alachlor and metolachlor were determined by GC and adsorption results were fit to a linear regression equation. The slope of the isotherms (Kd) was normalized to the fraction of organic carbon on montmorillonite complexes to produce corresponding Koc. Adsorption of surfactants fit very well to Langmuir equation. Increased basal spacing indicates that surfactant molecules could penetrate through the interlayer spacing and arrange themselves in different ways. Equilibrium data of alachlor and metolachlor suggest that adsorption may occur via physical or chemical bonds. Koc values of alachlor or metolachlor decreased as the fraction of the organic carbon increased in montmorillonite complexes indicating independent adsorption process. Changes of the molar free energy of the adsorption reactions were in the range of physical adsorption, indicating that adsorption reactions are spontaneous and the molecules either adsorb on the surface or penetrate into the inter-layers of montmorillonite-surfactant complex. Careful investigation of the adsorption data suggests that interaction may occur via the active groups such as carbonyl group (-C=O), anilidic (C-N) group and/or phenyl rings. This information may provide better understanding on adsorption mechanism and be useful in designing ecologically acceptable herbicide formulations.

Interactions of organic contaminants with mineral-adsorbed surfactants

Sorption of organic contaminants (phenol, p-nitrophenol, and naphthalene) to natural solids (soils and bentonite) with and without myristylpyridinium bromide (MPB) cationic surfactant was studied to provide novel insightto interactions of contaminants with the mineral-adsorbed surfactant. Contaminant sorption coefficients with mineral-adsorbed surfactants, Kss, show a strong dependence on surfactant loading in the solid. At low surfactant levels, the Kss values increased with increasing sorbed surfactant mass, reached a maximum, and then decreased with increasing surfactant loading. The Kss values for contaminants were always higher than respective partition coefficients with surfactant micelles (Kmc) and natural organic matter (Koc). At examined MPB concentrations in water the three organic contaminants showed little solubility enhancement by MPB. At low sorbed-surfactant levels, the resulting mineral-adsorbed surfactant via the cation-exchange process appears to form a thin organic film, which effectively "adsorbs" the contaminants, resulting in very high Kss values. At high surfactant levels, the sorbed surfactant on minerals appears to form a bulklike medium that behaves essentially as a partition phase (rather than an adsorptive surface), with the resulting Kss being significantly decreased and less dependent on the MPB loading. The results provide a reference to the use of surfactants for remediation of contaminated soils/sediments or groundwater in engineered surfactant-enhanced washing.

Study of the desorption of linuron from soils to water enhanced by the addition of an anionic surfactant to soil-water system

The influence of the addition of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to the soil-water-linuron system in the herbicide desorption from soils with different organic matter (OM) content to water have been studied. SDS was used at critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of 0.75, 1.50, 5 and 10. The adsorption-desorption isotherms of linuron in aqueous medium and in SDS solutions at concentration of 0.75 cmc fitted the Freundlich adsorption equation for all the soils studied. When the SDS concentration was 1.50 cmc only the desorption isotherms for the soils with OM content < or = 5.40% fit this equation and was not fulfilled by any of the soils when the SDS concentration was 5 or 10 cmc. All the desorption isotherms displayed hysteresis, the hysteresis coefficients of the desorption isotherms in SDS solutions always being lower than those of the desorption isotherms in water. The efficiency coefficients, defined as the relationship between the percentages of linuron desorbed in SDS solution and the percentages of linuron desorbed in water, range from 1.02 to 2.41 in the soil with the lowest OM content, and from 1.91 to 17.1 in the soil with the highest OM content. The results obtained indicate the enhancement of linuron desorption by the addition of SDS surfactant to soil-water system. The efficiency of SDS is seen as from surfactant concentrations below the cmc and varies with the surfactant concentration and with the soil OM content.

Effect of sequestration on PAH degradability with Fenton's reagent: roles of total organic carbon, humin, and soil porosity

The phenomenon of contaminant sequestration-and the physicochemical soil parameters which drive this process-has recently been studied by several authors with regard to microbial contaminant degradation. Very little work has been done to determine the effects of contaminant sequestration on the chemical treatability (oxidizability) of soil contaminants; the current study was conducted to address this data gap. A suite of six model soils, ranging in organic matter content from 2.32 to 24.28%, were extensively characterized. Measured parameters included: (1) levels of total organic carbon (TOC); (2) contents of humic acid (HA); fulvic acid (FA) and humin; and (3) total porosity and surface area. Each soil was then spiked with coal tar and, after varying periods of aging/sequestration, subjected to slurry-phase Fenton's reagent oxidation. Percent recoveries of 12 PAHs, ranging from 3 to 6 aromatic rings, were determined. Results indicated that the susceptibility of each PAH to chemical oxidation was a function of TOC in four of the soils (those with TOC greater than approximately 5%), but was strongly dependent on soil porosity for low-TOC soils. The importance of these two parameters changed with increasing sequestration time, with the relative contribution of porosity-mediated sequestration becoming more important over time. Porosity-mediated effects were more rapid and significant with lower-molecular-weight PAHs (e.g. those with three or four aromatic rings) than with higher-molecular-weight, more hydrophobic compounds. These observations are discussed in light of current physicochemical models of the contaminant sequestration process.

Evaluation of component characteristics of soil-surfactant-herbicide system that affect enhanced desorption of linuron and atrazine preadsorbed by soils

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the surfactant-enhanced desorption of atrazine and linuron preadsorbed by soils and to study the effect of different characteristics of the components of soil-surfactant-herbicide systems on the efficiency of desorption. Two soils with organic matter contents of 3.16% and 7.28% and 11 surfactants, three of them anionic (SDS, LAS, and SDOSS) and 8 of them nonionic (Tween 80, Tween 20, Triton X-100, Triton X-114, Brij 35, Brij 30, Tergitol NP-10, and Tergitol 15S12), at concentrations 1.5 and 10 times the critical micellar concentration (cmc) were used. Adsorption-desorption studies were performed using a batch system, and the Freundlich model was applied to the isotherms except for some cases in which this was not possible. The desorption isotherms of both pesticides in aqueous medium pointed to the existence of hysteresis. The values of the hysteresis coefficients of the adsorption isotherms in water decreased in some cases while in others they increased in the presence of the surfactants, depending on the structure of these and on their concentration in water, on the organic matter content of the soil, and on the K(ow) of the herbicide. Parallel to the decrease in hysteresis, the percentage of herbicide desorption and desorption efficiency coefficient (E; ratio between the percentages of herbicide desorption in the presence of surfactant and those found in aqueous medium) increased. For a 10 cmc surfactant concentration, a linear relationship was seen between the E values and the absolute values of the cmc of the surfactants. Also, for the same surfactant, a linear relationship was seen between log E and the log of the absolute concentrations of surfactant in solution. The results obtained are of practical interest for the choice of surfactants for concrete problems involved in the recovery of pesticide-polluted waters using the surfactant-enhanced desorption pumping technique.

Effects of physical-chemical characteristics on the sorption of selected endocrine disruptors by dissolved organic matter surrogates

Sorption coefficients (K(oc) values) of selected endocrine disruptors for a wide variety of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were measured using fluorescence quenching and solubility enhancement. 17beta-Estradiol, estriol, 17alpha-ethynylestradiol, p-nonylphenol, p-tert-octylphenol, and dibutylphthalate were selected as endocrine disruptors. Aldrich humic acid, Suwannee River humic and fulvic acids, Nordic fulvic acid, alginic acid, dextran, and tannic acid were selected as DOM surrogates. The resulting sorption coefficients (log K(oc)) were independent of octanol-water partitioning coefficients (log K(ow)) of the selected endocrine disruptors, indicating the hydrophobic interaction is not the predominant sorption mechanism. Moreover, the K(oc) values for the selected endocrine disruptors, especially the steroid estrogens, correlated much better with UV absorptivity at 272 nm (A272) and phenolic group concentration of the DOM than with either the H/O or the (O+N)/C atomic ratio of the DOM. This suggests that the sorption mechanism is closely related to the interaction between pi-electrons and the hydrogen bonds, i.e., the affinity between phenolic groups of the steroid estrogens and DOM is suggested to provide a relatively large contribution to the overall sorption and yield the K(oc) values of the steroid estrogens as high as those of the alkylphenols and dibutylphthalate, which are suggested to be dominated by nonspecific hydrophobic interaction.

QSPR-based prediction of adsorption of halogenated aromatics on yellow-brown soil

Halogenated aromatic compounds exist widely in soil and aqueous environment. The study of their transport and distribution is quite important for pollution control and risk assessment. In the present work the adsorption coefficients of 28 halogenated benzenes, anilines and phenols on yellow-brown soil were measured with batch equilibrium method, and a prediction model was developed through the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) technique. Then the obtained model was tested with Monte Carlo simulation and Jacknife methods. The results indicated that it was robust enough to estimate soil adsorption behaviors for the tested compounds. Based on the obtained model it could be deduced that the adsorption of halogenated aromatics on yellow-brown soil was not a simple partitioning process but involved complicated interactions.

3-D structural modeling of humic acids through experimental characterization, computer assisted structure elucidation and atomistic simulations. 1. Chelsea soil humic acid

This paper describes an integrated experimental and computational framework for developing 3-D structural models for humic acids (HAs). This approach combines experimental characterization, computer assisted structure elucidation (CASE), and atomistic simulations to generate all 3-D structural models or a representative sample of these models consistent with the analytical data and bulk thermodynamic/structural properties of HAs. To illustrate this methodology, structural data derived from elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance FT-IR spectroscopy, 1-D/2-D 1H and 13C solution NMR spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI QqTOF MS) are employed as input to the CASE program SIGNATURE to generate all 3-D structural models for Chelsea soil humic acid (HA). These models are subsequently used as starting 3-D structures to carry out constant temperature-constant pressure molecular dynamics simulations to estimate their bulk densities and Hildebrand solubility parameters. Surprisingly, only a few model isomers are found to exhibit molecular compositions and bulk thermodynamic properties consistent with the experimental data. The simulated 13C NMR spectrum of an equimolar mixture of these model isomers compares favorably with the measured spectrum of Chelsea soil HA.

Using selected operational descriptors to examine the heterogeneity within a bulk humic substance

The heterogeneity within a bulk humic substance (HS) was investigated for ultrafiltration (UF) fractions of purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) using specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), weight- and number-average molecular weights (MWw and MWn), and organic carbon-normalized pyrene binding coefficients (Koc). As expected, variations in these selected operational descriptors were found for the PAHA UF fractions, but the variations were smaller than the ranges observed for a small subset of different aquatic and terrestrial HS. In general, correlations among the operational descriptors for the different HS failed to predict the correct trends for the PAHA UF fractions. More variation in Koc was observed for the different HS versus the PAHA UF fractions despite comparable molecular weight ranges, suggesting that the extent of pyrene binding is more strongly influenced by HS source and chemical structure than merely by physical structural features. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) confirmed the structural stability of PAHA UF fractions, as demonstrated by a near-identical mathematical reconstruction of the original bulk chromatogram from a weighted summation of the individual UF fraction chromatograms. An ideal mixture model accurately predicted some operational descriptors of PAHA properties (i.e., SUVA and MWw), but failed to predict the PAHA reactivity for pyrene binding. Our Koc results at pH 4 and 7 suggest that the relative contribution of two mechanisms, partitioning and specific interactions, may account for the interactions between HS and pyrene.

Distribution behavior of pyrene to adsorbed humic acids on kaolin

The distribution behavior of pyrene on humic acid (HA)-kaolin complexes, prepared by adsorbing HA on kaolin, was investigated by batch experiments. The distribution coefficient (Kd) of pyrene on the HA-kaolin complex increased with the fraction (f(oc)) of organic carbon adsorbed to the surface of the kaolin. This can be attributed to hydrophobic interactions between pyrene and the adsorbed HAs. The effects of adsorbed HAs were quantitatively evaluated by calculating the distribution coefficient (K(oc)) and affinity constant (K(oc)ads) for pyrene to the adsorbed HAs. A fluorescence quenching method was employed to determine the affinity constant (K(oc)aq) of pyrene to HAs dissolved in an aqueous solution. When the K(oc) values were compared with the K(oc)aq values, the K(oc) values were found to be 4 to 11 times larger than the K(oc)aq values. On the other hand, the K(oc)ads values were 4 to 9 times larger than the K(oc)aq values. These indicate that the affinity for pyrene is enhanced by the adsorption of HAs to kaolin. In addition, the K(oc) values increased with increasing average molecular weights of the HAs. These results demonstrate that HAs, when they are adsorbed to clay minerals, play an important role in the deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a soil environment.

Retention and extractability of phenol, cresol, and dichlorophenol exposed to two surface soils in the presence of horseradish peroxidase enzyme

The retention of phenol, o-cresol, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), and their peroxidase-catalyzed polymerization products was evaluated on two surface soils. The extractability of the parent solutes and their polymerization products was also investigated. (14)C-Labeled radioisotopes were used to quantify the contaminant retained on soil as water-extractable, methanol-extractable, humic/fulvic (HA/FA) acid-bound, and soil/humin bound. Between 2 and 20% of the solute retained on soil after a 7-day contact period remained bound to the HA/FA and soil/humin components in unamended soils; in the presence of peroxidase this amount was as high as 40-75%. The alkali-extractable HA/FA component contained the largest fraction of radioactivity in peroxidase-amended soils. Whereas the soil organic matter content was the predominant factor controlling the extent of sorption of the parent phenols, the clay content and particle surface area appeared to contribute to the retention of the polymerization products. High molecular weight oligomers produced during peroxidase-mediated polymerization of phenols associate strongly with soil components and are likely incorporated into the soil organic matter via oxidative coupling reactions.

Inclusion of vegetable oils in Fenton's chemistry for remediation of PAH-contaminated soils

Pre-treatment with vegetable oils prior to treatment with Fenton's reagent led to increased oxidation by the latter of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a pair of model manufactured gas plant soils. This effect was frequently most pronounced in the cases of high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAH species, indicating a preferential "targeting" of oxidative equivalents toward these compounds. In both cases, addition of oils--either corn oil containing unsaturated lipids or palm kernal oil (PKO) comprised primarily of saturated fats--at the 5% dosage was required; supplementation with 1% oil apparently did not sufficiently facilitate PAH desorption and mass-transfer to have a notable effect on degradation efficiency. In PKO-supplemented reactions, replacement of H2O2 with calcium peroxide (CaO2) further increased the extent of PAH removal. Again, this was most pronounced in the cases of several HMW PAHs; among a suite of four 5- and 6-ring PAH (benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a, h]anthracene, benzo[g, h, i]perylene and indeno[c, d]pyrene), average removal efficiency increased from 5% in PKO-supplemented reactions in which H2O2 served as the oxidant, compared to 44% in CaO2-containing reactions. This last finding is consistent with other reports which have indicated that slower-release oxidants are better suited to degradation of contaminants which, despite vegetable oil treatment, remain soil-sorbed.

Soot-carbon influenced distribution of PCDD/Fs in the marine environment of the Grenlandsfjords, Norway

The particle associations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were studied in both the water column and the surface sediments of a marine fiord system and were found to poorly obey expectations from the organic matter partitioning (OMP) paradigm. The field observations were instead consistent with the presence of a stronger sorbent subdomain such as pyrogenic soot-carbon (SC) playing an important role in affecting the environmental distribution and fate of PCDD/Fs. Solid-water distribution coefficients (Kd) of PCDD/ Fs actually observed in the water column were several orders of magnitude above predictions from a commonly used OMP model. Even when these elevated Kd values were normalized to the particulate organic carbon (POC) content (i.e., K(OC)), the variability in K(OC) for individual PCDD/ Fs at different fjord locations and seasons of factors 100-1,000 suggested that bulk organic matter was not the governing sorbent domain of the suspended particles. Further, POC-normalized particle concentrations of PCDD/ Fs (C(OC)) in a vertical profile (surface water-bottom water-surface sediment) revealed a strong increasing trend with depth. Factors of about 100 higher Coc for all PCDD/Fs in the sediment than in the surface water could not be explained by higher fugacity in the surrounding deep water nor with C:N or delta13C indexes of selective aging of the bulk organic matter. Instead this was hypothesized to reflect selective preservation of a more recalcitrant and highly sorbing, but minor, subdomain such as soot. The extent of enhanced PCDD/F sorption, above the OMP predictions, was positively correlated with the SC:POC ratio of the suspended particles in surface and deep waters. Finally, the geographical distribution of sedimentary PCDD/F concentrations were better explained by the SC content than by the bulk OC content of the sediment. Altogether, these field-based findings add to recent laboratory-based sorption studies to suggest that we need to consider both amorphous OC partitioning domains and SC particles as carriers of planar aromatic contaminants if we are to explain the environmental distribution and fate of pollutants such as PCDD/Fs.

Retention behavior of hydrophobic organic chemicals as a function of temperature in soil leaching column chromatography

To study the transport mechanism of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) and the energy change in soil/solvent system, a soil leaching column chromatographic (SLCC) experiment at an environmental temperature range of 20-40 degrees C was carried out, which utilized a reference soil (SP 14696) packed column and a methanol-water (1:4 by volume ratio) eluent. The transport process quickens with the increase of column temperature. The ratio of retention factors at 30 and 40 degrees C (k'30/k'40) ranged from 1.08 to 1.36. The lower enthalpy change of the solute transfer in SLCC (from eluent to soil) than in conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography (e.g., from eluent to C18) is consistent with the hypothesis that HOCs were dominantly and physically partitioned between solvent and soil. The results were also verified by the linear solvation energy relationships analysis. The chief factor controlling the retention was found to be the solute solvophobic partition, and the second important factor was the solute hydrogen-bond basicity, while the least important factors were the solute polarizability-dipolarity and hydrogen-bond acidity. With the increase of temperature, the contributions of the solute solvophobic partition and hydrogen-bond basicity gradually decrease, and the latter decreases faster than the former.

Solubility-normalized combined adsorption-partitioning sorption isotherms for organic pollutants

Equilibrium sorption isotherms were measured for five different low-polarity organic compounds (benzene, trichloroethene, 1,2- and 1,4-dichlorobenzene, and phenanthrene) over a wide concentration range. The investigated sorbents can be grouped into the following three classes: (1) humic soil organic matter, which shows linear sorption isotherms (solely partitioning, as observed in the peat sample); (2) carbon materials, which were thermally altered (due to their natural history or industrial production) and thus contain a high specific surface area and exhibit nonlinear isotherms, and (3) pure engineered microporous materials (e.g., zeolites and activated carbon), where adsorption is solely due to a pore-filling process. Sorption of all compounds was fitted very well by the Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes (PDM) model, which for sorbents containing humic organic matter (e.g., peat) was combined with linear partitioning. Both the partitioning and the Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes model predict unique sorption isotherms of similar compounds if the solubility-normalized aqueous concentration is used. In addition, an inverse linear relationship between the distribution coefficient (Kd) and water solubility, which was very well confirmed by the data, is obtained. This also leads to unit-equivalent Freundlich sorption isotherms and explains the often observed apparent correlation between sorption capacity at a given concentration (e.g., Freundlich coefficient) and sorption nonlinearity (Freundlich exponent).

Retention equations of nonionic organic chemicals in soil column chromatography with methanol-water eluents

Research efforts dealing with chemical transportation in soils are needed to prevent damage to ground water. Methanol-containing solvents can increase the translocation of nonionic organic chemicals (NOCs). In this study, a general log-linear retention equation, log k' = log k'w - Sphi (Eq. [1]), was developed to describe the mobilities of NOCs in soil column chromatography (SCC). The term phi denotes the volume fraction of methanol in eluent, k' is the capacity factor of a solute at a certain phi value, and log k'w and -S are the intercept and slope of the log k' vs. phi plot. Two reference soils (GSE 17204 and GSE 17205) were used as packing materials, and were eluted by isocratic methanol-water mixtures. A model of linear solvation energy relationships (LSER) was applied to analyze the k' from molecular interactions. The most important factor determining the transportation was found to be the solute hydrophobic partition in soils, and the second-most important factor was the solute hydrogen-bond basicity (hydrogen-bond accepting ability), while the less important factor was the solute dipolarity-polarizability. The solute hydrogen-bond acidity (hydrogen-bond donating ability) was statistically unimportant and deletable. From the LSER model, one could also obtain Eq. [1]. The experimental k' data of 121 NOCs can be accurately explained by Eq. [1]. The equation is promising to estimate the solute mobility in pure water by extrapolating from lower-capacity factors obtained in methanol-water mixed eluents.

Experimental determination of sorption in fractured flow systems

Fracture "skins" are alteration zones on fracture surfaces created by a variety of biological, chemical, and physical processes. Skins increase surface area, where sorption occurs, compared to the unaltered rock matrix. This study examines the sorption of organic solutes on altered fracture surfaces in an experimental fracture-flow apparatus. Fracture skins containing abundant metal oxides, clays, and organic material from the Breathitt Formation (Kentucky, USA) were collected in a manner such that skin surface integrity was maintained. The samples were reassembled in the lab in a flow-through apparatus that simulated approximately 2.7 m of a linear fracture "conduit." A dual-tracer injection scheme was utilized with the sorbing or reactive tracer compared to a non-reactive tracer (chloride) injected simultaneously. Sorption was assessed from the ratio of the first temporal moments of the breakthrough curves and from the loss of reactive tracer mass and evaluated as a function of flow velocity and solute type. The breakthrough curves suggest dual-flow regimes in the fracture with both sorbing and non-sorbing flow fields. Significant sorption occurs for the reactive components, and sorption increased with decreasing flow rate and decreasing compound solubility. Based on moment analysis, however, there was little retardation of the center of solute mass. These data suggest that non-equilibrium sorption processes dominate and that slow desorption and boundary layer diffusion cause extensive tailing in the breakthrough curves.

Sorption behaviour of acetochlor, atrazine, carbendazim, diazinon, imidacloprid and isoproturon on Hungarian agricultural soil

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the sorption behaviour of six commonly used pesticides (acetochlor, atrazine, carbendazim, diazinon, imidacloprid and isoproturon) on Hungarian brown forest soil with clay alluviation (Luvisol) using the batch equilibrium technique. The sorption isotherms could be described by the Freundlich equation in non-linear form (n < 1) for all compounds, however in case of diazinon using the extended Freundlich equation proved to be a better approach. The adsorption constant related soil organic carbon content (Koc) calculated from Freundlich equation were 314 for acetochlor, 133 for atrazine, 2805 for carbendazim, 1589 for diazinon, 210 for imidacloprid and 174 for isoproturon. The octanol-water partition coefficients (Pow), which can be a useful parameter to predict of adsorption behaviour of a chemical on soil, and dissociation coefficients of these pesticides were calculated based on the chemical structure of them using a computerized expert system. The octanol-water partition coefficients were determined experimentally from high performance liquid chromatographic parameters as well. Good agreement was observed between experimental and the computer expert system estimated data. Computer estimated log Pow values ranged 0.5 and 3.86 for the examined pesticides, with imidacloprid and diazinon being the least and most hydrophobic respectively. Experimentally determined logPow ranged between 0.92 and 3.81 with the same tendency. It can be concluded that the Freundlich adsorption constants (Kf) are slightly related to the octanol-water partition coefficients of investigated chemicals, nevertheless no close correlation could be established because of the influence of further characteristics of solutes and soil.

Influence of quaternary ammonium on sorption of selected metal cations onto clinoptilolite zeolite

Clay minerals and zeolites have large cation exchange capacities, which enable them to be modified by cationic surfactant to enhance their sorption of organic and anionic contaminants. In this study, the influence of quaternary ammonium surfactants on sorption of five metal cations (Cs+, Sr+, La3+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) onto a clinoptilolite zeolite was investigated. Generally, the metal cation sorption capacity and affinity for the zeolite decreased, indicating that presorbed cationic surfactants blocked sorption sites for metal cations, as the surfactant loading on the zeolite increased. Cesium and Pb2+ sorption was affected to a small extent, indicating that selective sorption for Cs+ and specific sorption for Pb2+ play an important role in addition to cation exchange. Sorption of cationic surfactants on zeolite preloaded with different metal cations showed a strong correlation with the chain length of the surfactant tail group, while the roles of the charges and types of the metal cations were minimal. As the chain length increases, the critical micelle concentration decreases and the surfactant molecules become more hydrophobic, resulting in progressive bilayer coverage. Desorption of presorbed metal cations by cationic surfactants was strongly affected by the surfactant chain length and metal type. More metal cations, particularly Sr2+ and Zn2+, desorbed with an increase in surfactant chain length. The results, in combination with those from organic and oxyanion sorption on surfactant-modified zeolite, may be used for future surfactant modification to target sorption and desorption of a specific type of contaminant or a mixture of different types of contaminants.

Influence of methanol on retention of hydrophobic organic chemicals in soil leaching column chromatography

The influence of methanol in methanol-water mixed eluents on the capacity factor (k'), an important parameter which could depict leaching potential of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) in soil leaching column chromatography (SLCC), was investigated. Two reference soils, GSE 17201 obtained from Bayer Landwirtschaftszentrum, Monheim, Germany and SP 14696 from LUFA, Spencer, Germany, were used as packing materials in soil columns, and isocratic elution with methanol-water mixtures at different volume fractions of methanol (phi) were tested. Short-term exposure of the column (packed with the GSE 17201 soil) to the eluents increased solute retention by a certain (23% log-unit) degree evaluated through a correlation with the retention on the same soil column but unpreconditioned by methanol-containing eluents. Long-term exposure of soil columns to the eluents did not influence the solute retention. A log-linear equation, log k' = log k'(w) - S(phi), could well and generally describe the retention of HOCs in SLCC. For the compounds of homologous series, logk'(w) had good linear relationship with S, indicating the hydrophobic partition mechanism existing in the retention process.

Acute lethal toxicity of environmental pollutants to aquatic organisms

The acute lethal toxicity of environment pollutants including chlorophenol, haloalkane, quinone, and substituted nitrobenzene (i.e., nitrophenol, nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, and aniline) compounds to aquatic organisms was determined. Determination of toxicity of chemicals was performed with chlorella, daphnia, carp, and tilapia. The toxicity of chlorophenols had no relation to the number of chlorine atoms on the benzene ring, but monochlorophenol had lower activity than more chlorine-substituted compounds. The tolerance levels of daphnia and carp to haloalkanes was found to be higher than that of chlorella; toxicity to chlorella was several hundred times higher than to daphnia. The toxicity of naphthoquinone compounds to chlorella and carp was higher than that of anthraquinone. A compound with a monochloride substitution on anthraquinone ring was less toxic to carp than those substituted with amine, hydroxyl, and dichlorine groups. Nitrobenzene compounds with an additional substitution group on the p position were extremely toxic to daphnia and carp.

Cosolvent effects on sorption isotherm linearity

Sorption-desorption hysteresis, slow desorption kinetics, and other nonideal phenomena have been attributed to the differing sorptive characteristics of the natural organic polymers associated with soils and sediments. In this study, aqueous and mixed solvent systems were used to investigate the effects of a cosolvent, methanol, on sorption isotherm linearity with natural organic matter (NOM), and to evaluate whether these results support, or weaken, the rubbery/glassy polymer conceptualization of NOM. All of the sorption isotherms displayed some nonlinear character. Our data indicates that all of the phenanthrene and atrazine isotherms were nonlinear up to the highest equilibrium solution concentration to solute solubility in water or cosolvent ratios (Ce/Sw,c) used, approximately 0.018 and 0.070, respectively. Isotherm linearity was also observed to increase with volumetric methanol content (fc). This observation is consistent with the NOM rubbery/glassy polymer conceptualization: the presence of methanol in NOM increased isotherm linearity as do solvents in synthetic polymers, and suggests that methanol is interacting with the NOM, enhancing its homogeneity as a sorptive phase so that sorption is less bimodal as fc increases. When the equilibrium solution concentration was normalized for solute solubility in water or methanol-water solutions, greater relative sorption magnitude was observed for the methanol-water treatments. This observation, in conjunction with the faster sorption kinetics observed in the methanol-water sediment column systems, indicates that the increase in relative sorption magnitude with fc may be attributed to the faster sorption kinetics in the methanol-water systems, and hence, greater relative sorptive uptake for the rubbery polymer fraction of NOM at similar time scales.

Pesticide soil sorption parameters: theory, measurement, uses, limitations and reliability

The soil sorption coefficient Kd and the soil organic carbon sorption coefficient KOC of pesticides are basic parameters used by environmental scientists and regulatory agencies worldwide in describing the environmental fate and behavior of pesticides. They are a measure of the strength of sorption of pesticides to soils and other geosorbent surfaces at the water/solid interface, and are thus directly related to both environmental mobility and persistence. KOC is regarded as a 'universal' parameter related to the hydrophobicity of the pesticide molecule, which applies to a given pesticide in all soils. This assumption is known to be inexact, but it is used in this way in modeling and estimating risk for pesticide leaching and runoff. In this report we examine the theory, uses, measurement or estimation, limitations and reliability of these parameters and provide some 'rules of thumb' for the use of these parameters in describing the behavior and fate of pesticides in the environment, especially in analysis by modeling.

Sorption kinetics of toluene in humin under two different levels of relative humidity

To identify any resistant fraction for desorption of toluene from humin and to quantify the sorption-desorption rates, the time courses of toluene sorption to compressed humin disks and to a thin humin film were investigated. The apparent diffusivity of toluene with humin disks ranges from 10(-8) to 10(-9) cm2/s and increases with temperature, based on the weight change of humin disks mounted on a microbalance and on the results simulated by use of a diffusion model. No detectable level of residual toluene was found after desorption, as revealed either by the gravimetric analysis or by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum obtained at either low or high humidity. The time scale for intrinsic vapor sorption without mass transfer hindrance is less than a few minutes with the thin film. All the results indicate that the sorption of toluene to humin is reversible and mainly diffusion controlled. This finding helps to better understand the sorption kinetics associated with humin and soil organic matter.

Solubility enhancement of PCDD/F in the presence of dissolved humic matter

From previous studies, we, the authors collected and arranged the octanol-water partition coefficients (K(ow)), water solubility (S0), and dissolved humic matter (DHM)-water partition coefficients (K(oc)) for 95 organic compounds, and presented the correlations between each physical property. The K(oc) and K(ow) of dioxins estimated were significantly increased while S0 was decreased on increasing the chlorine number. In the presence of DHM, solubility enhancement (Sw/S0, Sw is the actual solubility in the presence of DHM) in highly chlorinated PCDD/F such as HpCDDs and OCDD is higher than that in low chlorinated ones. It means that dioxins abundant wastes (fly ash) should not be codisposed with organic abundant wastes (sewage sludge, food waste or bottom ash, etc.) to minimize the leachability of dioxins.

Subcritical water extraction to evaluate desorption behavior of organic pesticides in soil

We evaluated the feasibility of extracting organic pesticides in soil using a hot-water percolation apparatus at 105 degrees C and 120 kPa pressure. Efficiency of the method was assessed by extracting six selected pesticides (acetochlor, atrazine, diazinon, carbendazim, imidacloprid, and isoproturon) from previously equilibrated soil at 13.6-65.8 mg/kg concentration range. Studies were performed on brown forest soil with clay alluviation (Luvisol). The method developed was compared to the traditional batch equilibrium method in terms of desorbed amount of pesticides from soil and extraction time. Pesticides in the liquid phase from the batch sorption experiment and in the effluent from the hot-water percolation were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. The results of the percolation experiment are in close correlation with those of the conventional soil testing method. Desorbed quantities by hot-water percolation were 85% acetochlor, 62% atrazine, 65% carbendazim, 44% diazinon, 95% imidacloprid, and 84% isoproturon, whereas using batch equilibrium method 101, 66, 64, 37, 81, and 90% were desorbed, expressed as the percentage of the adsorbed amount of pesticide on soil following equilibration. The average time for hot-water extraction was 3.45 min, in contrast to the 16 h time consumption of the traditional batch method. The effect of temperature on stability of selected compounds was also evaluated using pesticide-spiked sand without soil. Recoveries of analytes ranged between 84.6 and 91.1% with reproducibility of 7.9-10.2%, except for diazinon, for which recovery was 59.4% with 14.4% relative standard deviation since decomposition occurred at elevated temperature. The percolation process has been described by a first-order kinetic equation. The parameters calculated from the equation provide an opportunity to estimate the amount of compound available for desorption, the rate of desorption processes in the studied soil-pesticide-water system, and modeling the leaching process to obtain additional information on the environmental behavior of the examined pesticide.
