Metal-organic cycle-based multistage assemblies

Different from polymers or peptides (lacking metals), metal–organic cycles (MOCs) have properties which arise from the combination of metals and common nonmetal elements and topologies. The development of MOC supramolecular materials is in its infancy, and how the coordination bonds work to make the corresponding suprastructures is unknown. This has limited the potential application of these MOC-based materials. Considering the applications of individual MOCs, the study and discovery of the unique factors in MOC-involved multilevel self-assembly are critical to further our knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms of metal-containing compounds. Here, a systematic study of MOC assembly in various solvent systems has confirmed the critical role of coordination linkers in tuning the shape and size of the MOC-derived suprastructures.

It is well known that chemical compositions and structural arrangements of materials have a great influence on their resultant properties. Diverse functional materials have been constructed by using either biomolecules (peptides, DNA, and RNA) in nature or artificially synthesized molecules (polymers and pillararenes). The relationships between traditional building blocks (such as peptides) have been widely investigated, for example how hydrogen bonds work in the peptide multistage assembly process. However, in contrast to traditional covalent bond-based building blocks-based assembly, suprastructures formed by noncovalent bonds are more influenced by specific bond features, but to date only a few results have been reported based on noncovalent bond-based building block multistage assembly. Here, three metal–organic cycles (MOCs) were used to show how coordination bonds influence the bimetallacycle conformation then lead to the topology differences of MOC multilevel ordered materials. It was found that the coordination linker (isophthalate-Pt-pyridine) is an important factor to tune the shape and size of the MOC-derived suprastructures.

Electroassisted Core-Spun Triboelectric Nanogenerator Fabrics for IntelliSense and Artificial Intelligence Perception

IntelliSense fabrics that can sense transient mechanical stimuli are widely anticipated in flexible and wearable electronics. However, most IntelliSense fabrics developed so far are only sensitive to quasi-static forces, such as stretching, bending, or twisting. In this work, a sheath-core triboelectric nanogenerator (SC-TENG) yarn was developed via a rational design, electroassisted core spinning technique, that consisted of a rough nanoscale dielectric surface and mechanically strong and electrically conductive core yarns. The resulting system was used to sense and distinguish the instantaneous mechanical stimuli generated by different materials. To further improve the sensing accuracy, a machine learning model, based on a classification coding and recurrent neural network, was built to predict the type of contact materials from the peak profiles of output voltages. With these experimental and algorithmic optimizations, we finally used SC-TENG yarn to identify the type of materials in real-time. Moreover, by applying Internet of Things techniques, we investigated that SC-TENG yarn could be integrated into an IntelliSense system to recognize and control various electronic and electrical systems, demonstrating promising applications in wearable energy supply, IntelliSense fabrics, and human-machine interactions.

Flexible Sensory Systems: Structural Approaches

Biology is characterized by smooth, elastic, and nonplanar surfaces; as a consequence, soft electronics that enable interfacing with nonplanar surfaces allow applications that could not be achieved with the rigid and integrated circuits that exist today. Here, we review the latest examples of technologies and methods that can replace elasticity through a structural approach; these approaches can modify mechanical properties, thereby improving performance, while maintaining the existing material integrity. Furthermore, an overview of the recent progress in wave/wrinkle, stretchable interconnect, origami/kirigami, crack, nano/micro, and textile structures is provided. Finally, potential applications and expected developments in soft electronics are discussed.

Flexible alternating current electroluminescent devices integrated with high voltage triboelectric nanogenerators

Flexible alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices have attracted growing interest as promising wearable displays for their uniformity of light emission, low power consumption, and excellent reliability. However, the requirement of high-voltage power sources for driving ACEL devices greatly impedes their portability and commercialization. Here, we developed flexible ACEL devices integrated with high output-voltage triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) using easy and low-cost crumpled Al electrodes. The output voltage and current could reach as high as 490 V and 71.74 μA, corresponding to the maximum instantaneous output power density of 1.503 mW cm^-2, which was demonstrated to power an integrated flexible ACEL patterned display. In addition, through signal acquisition and transmission, ACEL can display the compression frequency of TENG in real time. Such self-powered ACEL devices are very promising as flexible displays in wearable electronics.

Recent Advances in Silver Nanowires Electrodes for Flexible Organic/Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Flexible organic light-emitting diodes and perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have been investigated as an innovative category of revolutionary LED devices for next-generation flat display and lighting applications. A transparent conductive electrode is a key component in flexible OLEDs and PeLEDs, and has been the limitation of the development in this area. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have been regarded as the most suitable alternative material in TCEs, due to the economical solution synthesis and compatibility with roll-to-roll technology. This mini-review addresses the advances in silver nanowires electrodes for flexible organic/perovskite light-emitting diodes, and the relationship between electrode optimization and device performance is demonstrated. Moreover, the potential strategies and perspectives for their further development of AgNWs-based flexible OLEDs and PeLEDs are presented.

A Weavable and Scalable Cotton-Yarn-Based Battery Activated by Human Sweat for Textile Electronics

Sweat-activated batteries (SABs) are lightweight, biocompatible energy generators that produce sufficient power for skin-interface electronic devices. However, the fabrication of 1D SABs that are compatible with conventional textile techniques for self-powered wearable electronics remains challenging. In this study, a cotton-yarn-based SAB (CYSAB) with a segmental structure is developed, in which carbon-black-modified, pristine yarn and Zn foil-wrapped segments are prepared to serve as the cathode, salt bridge, and anode, respectively. Upon electrolyte absorption, the CYSAB can be rapidly activated. Its performance is closely related to the ion concentration, infiltrated electrolyte volume, and evaporation rate. The CYSAB can tolerate repeated bending and washing without any significant influence on its power output. Moreover, the CYSABs can be woven into fabrics and connected in series and parallel configurations to produce an energy supplying headband, which can be activated by the sweat secreted from a volunteer during a cycling exercise to power light-emitting diode headlights. The developed CYSAB can also be integrated with yarn-based strain sensors to achieve a smart textile for the self-powered sensing of human motion and breathing. This weavable, washable, and scalable CYSAB is expected to contribute to the manufacturing of self-powered smart textiles for future applications in wearable healthcare monitoring.

Single fibre enables acoustic fabrics via nanometre-scale vibrations

Fabrics, by virtue of their composition and structure, have traditionally been used as acoustic absorbers^1,2. Here, inspired by the auditory system³, we introduce a fabric that operates as a sensitive audible microphone while retaining the traditional qualities of fabrics, such as machine washability and draping. The fabric medium is composed of high-Young's modulus textile yarns in the weft of a cotton warp, converting tenuous 10^-7-atmosphere pressure waves at audible frequencies into lower-order mechanical vibration modes. Woven into the fabric is a thermally drawn composite piezoelectric fibre that conforms to the fabric and converts the mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. Key to the fibre sensitivity is an elastomeric cladding that concentrates the mechanical stress in a piezocomposite layer with a high piezoelectric charge coefficient of approximately 46 picocoulombs per newton, a result of the thermal drawing process. Concurrent measurements of electric output and spatial vibration patterns in response to audible acoustic excitation reveal that fabric vibrational modes with nanometre amplitude displacement are the source of the electrical output of the fibre. With the fibre subsuming less than 0.1% of the fabric by volume, a single fibre draw enables tens of square metres of fabric microphone. Three different applications exemplify the usefulness of this study: a woven shirt with dual acoustic fibres measures the precise direction of an acoustic impulse, bidirectional communications are established between two fabrics working as sound emitters and receivers, and a shirt auscultates cardiac sound signals.

Stress Dissipation Encoded Silk Fibroin Electrode for the Athlete-Beneficial Silk Bioelectronics

The kinetic body motions have guided the core-shell fabrics of wearable bioelectronics to be elastoplastic. However, the polymeric electrodes follow the trade-off relationship between toughness and stretchability. To this end, the stress dissipation encoded silk fibroin electrode is proposed as the core electrode of wearable bioelectronics. Significantly, the high degree of intrinsic stress dissipation is realized via an amino acid crosslink. The canonical phenolic amino acid (i.e., tyrosine) of silk fibroin is engineered to bridge the secondary structures. A sufficient crosslink network is constructed when tyrosine is exposed near the amorphous strand. The stress dissipative tyrosine crosslink affords 12.5-fold increments of toughness (4.72 to 58.9 MJ m^-3 ) and implements the elastoplastic silk fibroin. The harmony of elastoplastic core electrodes with shell fabrics enables the wearable bioelectronics to employ mechanical performance (elastoplasticity of 750 MJ m^-3 ) and stable electrical response. The proposed wearable is capable of assisting the effective workouts via triboelectricity. In principle, active mobility with suggested wearables potentially relieves muscular fatigues and severe injuries during daily fitness.

Smart textile lighting/display system with multifunctional fibre devices for large scale smart home and IoT applications

Smart textiles consist of discrete devices fabricated from—or incorporated onto—fibres. Despite the tremendous progress in smart textiles for lighting/display applications, a large scale approach for a smart display system with integrated multifunctional devices in traditional textile platforms has yet to be demonstrated. Here we report the realisation of a fully operational 46-inch smart textile lighting/display system consisting of RGB fibrous LEDs coupled with multifunctional fibre devices that are capable of wireless power transmission, touch sensing, photodetection, environmental/biosignal monitoring, and energy storage. The smart textile display system exhibits full freedom of form factors, including flexibility, bendability, and rollability as a vivid RGB lighting/grey-level-controlled full colour display apparatus with embedded fibre devices that are configured to provide external stimuli detection. Our systematic design and integration strategies are transformational and provide the foundation for realising highly functional smart lighting/display textiles over large area for revolutionary applications on smart homes and internet of things (IoT).

A large scale approach for multifunctional smart display systems in traditional textiles has yet to be demonstrated. Here, authors present a foldable, rollable 46-inch smart textile lighting/display system for smart homes and internet of things applications via the systematic design and integration of versatile fibre devices into textile form factors.

Freestanding and Sandwich MXene-Based Cathode with Suppressed Lithium Polysulfides Shuttle for Flexible Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Flexible lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high mechanical compliance and energy density are highly desired. This manuscript reported that large-area freestanding MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) film has been obtained through a scalable drop-casting method, significantly improving adhesion to the sulfur layer under the continuously bent. Titanium oxide anchored on holey Ti₃C₂T_x (TiO₂/H-Ti₃C₂T_x) was also produced by the well-controlled oxidation of few-layer Ti₃C₂T_x, which greatly facilitates lithium ion transport as well as prevents the shuttling of lithium polysulfides. Therefore, the obtained sandwich electrode has demonstrated a high capacity of 740 mAh g^-1 at 2 C and a high capacity retention of 81% at 1 C after 500 cycles. Flexible Li-S batteries based on this sandwich electrode have a capacity retention as high as 95% after bending 500 times. This work provides effective design strategies of MXene for flexible batteries and wearable electronics.

In Situ Anchoring Co-N-C Nanoparticles on Co4 N Nanosheets toward Ultrastable Flexible Self-Supported Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalyst Enables Recyclable Zn-Air Batteries Over 10 000 Cycles and Fast Charging

Zn-air batteries (ZABs) are very promising for flexible energy storage, but their application is limited to the primary battery. Developing an efficient and non-noble metal cathode toward oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is of great significance for the commercial application of rechargeable ZABs. Herein, a flexible self-supported integrated bifunctional cathode is presented in which the Co-N-C nanoparticles are in situ anchored on Co₄ N nanosheets via a facile and scalable strategy. Benefiting from integrated 3D architecture with adequate active sites, porous structure, high conductivity originating from the metal substrate, and the synergistic effects of Co-N-C and Co₄ N, the cathode exhibits excellent bifunctional activity (low overpotential of 275 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for OER, high half-wave potential of 0.833 V for ORR), and ultralong durability for ORR/OER in the alkaline medium. Impressively, this cathode enables the recyclable aqueous ZABs a record overall lifespan over 10 000 cycles at 20 mA cm^-2 , and a superior fast-charging feature at an ultrahigh charging current density of 100 mA cm^-2 . Furthermore, such a flexible integrated cathode can be directly used as a self-supported cathode for flexible solid-state ZABs, with excellent reversibility for 300 cycles, demonstrating its feasibility for practical application.

From Mesoscopic Functionalization of Silk Fibroin to Smart Fiber Devices for Textile Electronics and Photonics

Bombyx mori silk fibers exhibit significant potential for applications in smart textiles, such as fiber sensors, fiber actuators, optical fibers, and energy harvester. Silk fibroin (SF) from B. mori silkworm fibers can be reconstructed/functionalized at the mesoscopic scale during refolding from the solution state into fibers. This facilitates the mesoscopic functionalization by engaging functional seeds in the refolding of unfolded SF molecules. In particular, SF solutions can be self-assembled into regenerated fiber devices by artificial spinning technologies, such as wet spinning, dry spinning, microfluidic spinning, electrospinning, and direct writing. Meso-functionalization manipulates the SF property from the mesoscopic scale, transforming the original silk fibers into smart fiber devices with smart functionalities, such as sensors, actuators, optical fibers, luminous fibers, and energy harvesters. In this review, the progress of mesoscopic structural construction from SF materials to fiber electronics/photonics is comprehensively summarized, along with the spinning technologies and fiber structure characterization methods. The applications, prospects, and challenges of smart silk fibers in textile devices for wearable personalized healthcare, self-propelled exoskeletons, optical and luminous fibers, and sustainable energy harvesters are also discussed.

Advanced Multifunctional Aqueous Rechargeable Batteries Design: From Materials and Devices to Systems

Multifunctional aqueous rechargeable batteries (MARBs) are regarded as safe, cost-effective, and scalable electrochemical energy storage devices, which offer additional functionalities that conventional batteries cannot achieve, which ideally leads to unprecedented applications. Although MARBs are among the most exciting and rapidly growing topics in scientific research and industrial development nowadays, a systematic summary of the evolution and advances in the field of MARBs is still not available. Therefore, the review presented comprehensively and systematically summarizes the design principles and the recent advances of MARBs by categories of smart ARBs and integrated systems, together with an analysis of their device design and configuration, electrochemical performance, and diverse smart functions. The two most promising strategies to construct novel MARBs may be A) the introduction of functional materials into ARB components, and B) integration of ARBs with other functional devices. The ongoing challenges and future perspectives in this research and development field are outlined to foster the future development of MARBs. Finally, the most important upcoming research directions in this rapidly developing field are highlighted that may be most promising to lead to the commercialization of MARBs and to a further broadening of their range of applications.

Triboelectric Leakage-Field-Induced Electroluminescence Based on ZnS:Cu

The related studies and applications of ZnS-based phosphorescent materials involve various aspects such as lighting, display, sensing, electronic signatures, and confidential information. Here, triboelectrification-induced electroluminescence (TIEL) of the ZnS:Cu due to the triboelectric leakage field is discovered via a gently horizontal sliding between a ZnS:Cu particle-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film and a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) film, whose intensity is positively correlated with the temperature, the doping ratio of ZnS:Cu, the pressure, and the frequency. It is also demonstrated that the TIEL mainly occurs inside the bulk film, where the ZnS:Cu phosphor particles can be polarized instantaneously by the leakage electric field of triboelectrification. The polarization will lead to a tilted energy band of the ZnS, resulting in an emitting of green light due to electrons detrapped into the conduction band and recombined with holes in the impurity state. This study not only reveals great fundamental physics for understanding of luminescence induced by a simple sliding between two triboelectric materials but also indicates another way for triboelectrification to be used in advanced optoelectronic devices.

Particle Flow Spinning Mass-Manufactured Stretchable Magnetic Yarn for Self-Powered Mechanical Sensing

Self-powered fabric electronic devices are critical for next-generation wearable technologies, biomedical applications, and human-machine interfaces. The flexible magnetoelectric strategy is an emerging self-powered approach that can adapt to diverse environments and yield efficient electric outputs. However, there is an urgent need to develop a continuous manufacturing method for fabricating self-powered sensing magnetoelectric yarns with a high magnetic powder ratio and resistance to severe surroundings. In this study, we report particle flow spinning mass-manufactured magnetoelectric yarns for self-powered mechanical sensing. It has been shown that mechanical stretching/bending forces can be sensed and recognized by magnetoelectric yarns without an additional power supply. Through a combination of parameter optimization experiments and Maxwell modeling, we reveal the mechanism behind this mechanical-to-electric conversion capability. We further show that these self-powered sensing magnetoelectric yarns can monitor human motions after being attached to texture clothing. We expect that our results will stimulate further research on fabric electronics in a self-powered manner and will substantially advance the field.

A Printable and Conductive Yield-Stress Fluid as an Ultrastretchable Transparent Conductor

In contrast to ionically conductive liquids and gels, a new type of yield-stress fluid featuring reversible transitions between solid and liquid states is introduced in this study as a printable, ultrastretchable, and transparent conductor. The fluid is formulated by dispersing silica nanoparticles into the concentrated aqueous electrolyte. The as-printed features show solid-state appearances to allow facile encapsulation with elastomers. The transition into liquid-like behavior upon tensile deformations is the enabler for ultrahigh stretchability up to the fracture strain of the elastomer. Successful integrations of yield-stress fluid electrodes in highly stretchable strain sensors and light-emitting devices illustrate the practical suitability. The yield-stress fluid represents an attractive building block for stretchable electronic devices and systems in terms of giant deformability, high ionic conductivity, excellent optical transmittance, and compatibility with various elastomers.

Skin-friendly corrugated multilayer microspherical sensor fabricated with silk fibroin, poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), polyaniline, and kappa-carrageenan for wide range pressure detection

To enlarge the linear detection range without sacrificing the sensitivity is one of the urgent problems in the development of high-performance piezoresistive flexible sensors. Inspired by a multilayer corrugated board, this study develops a new multilayer microspherical sensor in which conductive core-shell SiO₂/Polyaniline (PANI) (PS) microspheres serve as active particles, while insulated silk fibroin (SF)/poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) (SP) fibers are used as the support. The size of conductive microspheres attached to the insulated layer is controllable. The multiple layers of assembly endow the flexible sensor with a high sensitivity (0.071 kPa^-1) and a wide linear detection (from 10 Pa to 380 kPa) simultaneously. This corrugated sensor also have a fast response time (145 ms) and an excellent durability (over 2000 cycles), and it can be used to detect human joint pressure signals and transmit encrypted information. Moreover, flexible keyboard, safety protection of machinery, as well as object position tracking can be achieved based on this sensor. Most importantly, the sensor encapsulated by biological polysaccharide kappa-carrageenan (KC) is skin-friendly and breathable, and it can be decomposed in 90 °C hot water. In conclusion, this multilayer microspherical sensor presents great potential for flexible wearable devices.

Electronic Textiles for Wearable Point-of-Care Systems

Traditional public health systems are suffering from limited, delayed, and inefficient medical services, especially when confronted with the pandemic and the aging population. Fusing traditional textiles with diagnostic, therapeutic, and protective medical devices can unlock electronic textiles (e-textiles) as point-of-care platform technologies on the human body, continuously monitoring vital signs and implementing round-the-clock treatment protocols in close proximity to the patient. This review comprehensively summarizes the research advances on e-textiles for wearable point-of-care systems. We start with a brief introduction to emphasize the significance of e-textiles in the current healthcare system. Then, we describe textile sensors for diagnosis, textile therapeutic devices for medical treatment, and textile protective devices for prevention, by highlighting their working mechanisms, representative materials, and clinical application scenarios. Afterward, we detail e-textiles' connection technologies as the gateway for real-time data transmission and processing in the context of 5G technologies and Internet of Things. Finally, we provide new insights into the remaining challenges and future directions in the field of e-textiles. Fueled by advances in chemistry and materials science, textile-based diagnostic devices, therapeutic devices, protective medical devices, and communication units are expected to interact synergistically to construct intelligent, wearable point-of-care textile platforms, ultimately illuminating the future of healthcare system in the Internet of Things era.

Electro-Thermochromic Luminescent Fibers Controlled by Self-Crystallinity Phase Change for Advanced Smart Textiles

Smart textiles with tunable luminescence have received special attention due to their great potential in various advanced photonic applications. Particularly, the development of one-dimensional, on-demand, responsive fluorescence fibers with excellent adaptability is of great significance. Herein, we propose electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers regulated by a self-crystallinity phase change; that is, their tunable luminescence properties are derived from the reversible conversion of the dispersion state and fluorescence emission of fluorophore molecules during the crystallization/melting processes of phase-change materials. First results obtained with an alginate wet-spinning system demonstrate that the self-crystallinity phase change can produce polymeric fibers with thermochromic fluorescence behavior, which are prepared using microemulsion particles containing a phase-change fatty acid and coumarin fluorescent dyes. These thermochromic fluorescence fibers possess a fast response speed, high emission contrast, and good reversibility (>100 cycles). Particularly, the thermochromic fluorescent fibers can gain an electrotriggered capability by means of electric heating materials, and their great potential in precision operation applications is demonstrated. It is easy to adjust the switching point of the electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers, highlighting their potential use in a diverse range of applications, the designs of which can be personalized. This work offers a simple yet versatile strategy for constructing electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers for advanced smart textiles.

An ultrathin rechargeable solid-state zinc ion fiber battery for electronic textiles

Electronic textiles (e-textiles), having the capability of interacting with the human body and surroundings, are changing our everyday life in fundamental and meaningful ways. Yet, the expansion of the field of e-textiles is still limited by the lack of stable and biocompatible power sources with aesthetic designs. Here, we report a rechargeable solid-state Zn/MnO₂ fiber battery with stable cyclic performance exceeding 500 hours while maintaining 98.0% capacity after more than 1000 charging/recharging cycles. The mechanism of the high electrical and mechanical performance due to the graphene oxide–embedded polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel electrolytes was rationalized by Monte Carlo simulation and finite element analysis. With a collection of key features including thin, light weight, economic, and biocompatible as well as high energy density, the Zn/MnO₂ fiber battery could seamlessly be integrated into a multifunctional on-body e-textile, which provides a stable power unit for continuous and simultaneous heart rate, temperature, humidity, and altitude monitoring.

Advances in wearable textile-based micro energy storage devices: structuring, application and perspective

The continuous expansion of smart microelectronics has put forward higher requirements for energy conversion, mechanical performance, and biocompatibility of micro-energy storage devices (MESDs). Unique porosity, superior flexibility and comfortable breathability make the textile-based structure a great potential in wearable MESDs. Herein, a timely and comprehensive review of this field is provided according to recent research advances. The following aspects, device construction of textile-based MESDs (TMESDs), fabric processing of textile components and smart functionalization (e.g., mechanical reliability, energy harvesting, sensing, self-charging and self-healing, etc.) are discussed and summarized thoroughly. Also, the perspectives on the microfabrication processes and multiple applications of TMESDs are elaborated.

Wearable chem-biosensing devices: from basic research to commercial market

Wearable chem-biosensors have been garnering tremendous interest due to the significant potential in tailored healthcare diagnostics and therapeutics. With the development of the medical diagnostics revolution, wearable chem-biosensors as a rapidly emerging wave allow individuals to perform on-demand detection and obtain the required in-depth information. In contrast to commercial wearables, which tend to be miniaturized for measuring physical activities, the recent progressive wearable chem-biosensing device have mainly focused on non-invasive or minimally invasive monitoring biomarkers at the molecular level. Wearables is a multidisciplinary subject, and chem-biosensing is one of the most significant technologies. In this review, the currently basic academic research of wearable chem-biosensing devices and its commercial transformation were summarized and highlighted. Moreover, some representative wearable products on the market for individual health managements are presented. Strategies for the identification and sensing of biomarkers are discussed to further promote the development of wearable chem-biosensing devices. We also shared the limitations and breakthroughs of the next generation of chemo-biosensor wearables, from home use to clinical diagnosis.

Wearable E-Textiles Using a Textile-Centric Design Approach

Electronics worn on the body have the potential to improve human health and the quality of life by monitoring vital signs and movements, displaying information, providing self-illumination for safety, and even providing new routes for personal expression through fashion. Textiles are a part of daily life in clothing, making them an ideal platform for wearable electronics. The acceptance of wearable e-textiles hinges on maintaining the properties of textiles that make them compatible with the human body. Beneficial properties such as softness, stretchability, drapability, and breathability come from the 3D fibrous structures of knitted and woven textiles. However, these structures also present considerable challenges for the fabrication of wearable e-textiles. Fabrication methods used for modern electronic devices are designed for 2D planar substrates and are mostly unsuitable for the complex 3D structures of textiles. There is thus an urgent need to develop fabrication methods specifically for e-textiles to advance wearable electronics. Solution-based fabrication methods are a promising approach to fabricating wearable e-textiles, especially considering that textiles have been successfully modified using pigmented dyes in dyebaths and printing inks for thousands of years. In this Account, we discuss our research on the solution-based electroless metallization of textiles to fabricate conductive e-textiles that are building blocks for e-textile devices. Electroless metallization solutions fully permeate textile structures to deposit metallic coatings on the surfaces of individual textile fibers, maintaining the inherent textile structures and wearability. The resulting e-textiles are highly conductive, soft, and stretchable. We furthermore discuss ways to turn the challenges related to textile structures into new opportunities by strategically using the structural features of textiles for e-textile device design. We demonstrate this textile-centric approach to designing e-textile devices using two examples. We discuss how the structure of an ultrasheer knitted textile forms a useful framework for new e-textile transparent conductive electrodes and describe the implementation of these electrodes to form highly stretchable light-emitting e-textiles. We also show how the structural features of velour fabrics form the basis for an innovative "island-bridge" strain-engineering structure that enables the integration of brittle electroactive materials and protects them from strain-induced damage, leading to the fabrication of stretchable textile-based lithium-ion battery electrodes. With the vast variety of textile structures available, we highlight the opportunities associated with this textile-centric design approach to advance textile-based wearable electronics. Such advances depend on a deep understanding of the relationship between the textile structure and the device requirements, which may potentially lead to the development of new textile structures customized to support specific devices. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that remain for the future of e-textiles, including durability, sustainability, and the development of performance standards.

Discovering giant magnetoelasticity in soft matter for electronic textiles

We discovered a giant magnetoelasticity in soft matter with up to 5-fold enhancement of magnetomechanical coupling factors compared to that of rigid metal alloys without an externally applied magnetic field. A wavy chain analytical model based on the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and demagnetizing field was established, fitting well to the experimental observation. To explore its potentials in electronic textiles, we coupled it with magnetic induction to invent a textile magnetoelastic generator (MEG), a new working mechanism for biomechanical energy conversion, featuring an intrinsic waterproofness, an ultralow internal impedance of approximately 20 Ω, and a high short-circuit current density of 1.37 mA/cm², which is about four orders of magnitude higher than that of other textile generator counterparts. Meanwhile, assisted by machine learning, the textile MEG could continuously monitor the respiratory activities on heavily perspiring skin without any encapsulation, allowing a timely diagnosis of the respiration abnormalities in a self-powered manner. We foresee that this discovery can be extended to wide-range soft-matter systems, emerging as a compelling approach to develop electronic textiles for energy, sensing, and therapeutic applications.

Self-Powered Interactive Fiber Electronics with Visual-Digital Synergies

Fiber electronics with mechanosensory functionality are highly desirable in healthcare, human-machine interfaces, and robotics. Most efforts are committed to optimize the electronically readable interface of fiber mechanoreceptor, while the user interface based on naked-eye readable output is rarely explored. Here, a scalable fiber electronics that can simultaneously visualize and digitize the mechanical stimulus without external power supply, named self-powered optoelectronic synergistic fiber sensors (SOEFSs), are reported. By coupling of space and surface charge polarization, a new mechanoluminescent (ML)-triboelectric synergistic effect is realized. It contributes to remarkable enhancement of both electrical (by 100%) and optical output (by 30%), as well as novel temporal-spatial resolution mode for motion capturing. Based on entirely new thermoplastic ML material system and spinning process, industrial-level continuously manufacture and recycling processes of SOEFS are realized. Furthermore, SOEFSs' application in human-machine interface, virtual reality, and underwater sensing, rescue, and information interaction is demonstrated.

All-in-One Self-Powered Human-Machine Interaction System for Wireless Remote Telemetry and Control of Intelligent Cars

The components in traditional human-machine interaction (HMI) systems are relatively independent, distributed and low-integrated, and the wearing experience is poor when the system adopts wearable electronics for intelligent control. The continuous and stable operation of every part always poses challenges for energy supply. In this work, a triboelectric technology-based all-in-one self-powered HMI system for wireless remote telemetry and the control of intelligent cars is proposed. The dual-network crosslinking hydrogel was synthesized and wrapped with functional layers to fabricate a stretchable fibrous triboelectric nanogenerator (SF-TENG) and a supercapacitor (SF-SC), respectively. A self-charging power unit containing woven SF-TENGs, SF-SCs, and a power management circuit was exploited to harvest mechanical energy from the human body and provided power for the whole system. A smart glove designed with five SF-TENGs on the dorsum of five fingers acts as a gesture sensor to generate signal permutations. The signals were processed by the microcontroller and then wirelessly transmitted to the intelligent car for remote telemetry and control. This work is of paramount potential for the application of various terminal devices in self-powered HMI systems with high integration for wearable electronics.

A Resonantly Driven, Electroluminescent Metal Oxide Semiconductor Capacitor with High Power Efficiency

Electroluminescence can be generated from a wide variety of emissive materials using a simple, generic device structure. In such a device, emissive materials are deposited by various means on a metal oxide semiconductor capacitor structure across which alternating current voltage is applied. However, these devices suffer from low external efficiencies and require the application of high voltages, thus hindering their practical usage and raising questions about the possible efficiencies that can be achieved using alternating current driving schemes in which injection of bipolar charges does not occur simultaneously. We show that appropriately chosen reactive electrical components can be leveraged to generate passive voltage gain across the device, allowing operation at input voltages below 1 V for devices across a range of gate oxide thicknesses. Furthermore, high power efficiencies are observed when using thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters deposited by a single thermal evaporation step, suggesting that the efficiency of a light-emitting device with simplified structure can be high.

Crumpled MXene Electrodes for Ultrastretchable and High-Area-Capacitance Supercapacitors

In spite of the excellent electrical and electrochemical properties, two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene) is often limited by the high stiffness for the direct implementation in next-generation stretchable and wearable energy storage devices. The improved deformability has been achieved in ultrathin composite electrodes utilizing additives that substantially reduce the specific capacitance. Here, we demonstrate an ultrastretchable and high-performing supercapacitor based on MXene electrodes with crumpled textures. After screening on the thickness, the crumpled MXene film of ∼3 μm in thickness is identified as the optimal choice to mitigate the crack formations under large and repetitive mechanical strains. The as-prepared symmetric supercapacitor, therefore, demonstrates a high specific capacitance of ∼470 mF cm^-2, ultrahigh stretchability up to 800% area strain, and >90% retention of the initial capacitance after 1000 stretch-relaxation cycles. The developments offer an attractive avenue to design stretchable electrodes based on various two-dimensional nanomaterials and their composites.

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Ionic Liquids for the Fabrication of Ionogel Films and Patterns

Film deposition and high-resolution patterning of ionic liquids (ILs) remain a challenge, despite a broad range of applications that would benefit from this type of processing. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of ILs. The IL-CVD method is based on the formation of a non-volatile IL through the reaction of two vaporized precursors. Ionogel micropatterns can be easily obtained via the combination of IL-CVD and standard photolithography, and the resulting microdrop arrays can be used as microreactors. The IL-CVD approach will facilitate leveraging the properties of ILs in a range of applications and microfabricated devices.

In Situ Formation of Ag Nanoparticles for Fiber Strain Sensors: Toward Textile-Based Wearable Applications

Wearable electronic devices have attracted significant attention as important components in several applications. Among various wearable electronic devices, interest in textile electronic devices is increasing because of their high deformability and portability in daily life. To develop textile electronic devices, fiber-based electronic devices should be fundamentally studied. Here, we report a stretchable and sensitive fiber strain sensor fabricated using only harmless materials during an in situ formation process. Despite using a mild and harmless reducing agent instead of typical strong and hazardous reducing agents, the developed fiber strain sensors feature a low initial electrical resistance of 0.9 Ω/cm, a wide strain sensing range (220%), high sensitivity (∼5.8 × 10⁴), negligible hysteresis, and high stability against repeated stretching-releasing deformation (5000 cycles). By applying the fiber sensors to various textiles, we demonstrate that the smart textile system can monitor various gestures in real-time and help users maintain accurate posture during exercise. These results will provide meaningful insights into the development of next-generation wearable applications.

Smart Fibers and Textiles for Personal Health Management

Fibers and textiles play key roles in the development and day-to-day activities of human society. Innovations related to flexible electronics-smart fibers and textiles with sensing, thermal regulation, and energy management capabilities-have drawn great interest from both academic and industrial communities. Smart fibers and textiles are anticipated to revolutionize personal health management due to their manifold features and capabilities, providing the foundation for many intelligent wearables. In this Perspective, we provide a brief overview of recent advances in the design and fabrication of smart fibers and textiles for health management applications, focusing primarily on those with sensing, thermal regulation, and energy management functions. We describe the existing challenges and opportunities and propose future development directions.

Recent Advances in Fiber-Shaped Electronic Devices for Wearable Applications

Fiber electronics is a key research area for realizing wearable microelectronic devices. Significant progress has been made in recent years in developing the geometry and composition of electronic fibers. In this review, we present that recent progress in the architecture and electrical properties of electronic fibers, including their fabrication methods. We intensively investigate the structural designs of fiber-shaped devices: coaxial, twisted, three-dimensional layer-by-layer, and woven structures. In addition, we introduce remarkable applications of fiber-shaped devices for energy harvesting/storage, sensing, and light-emitting devices. Electronic fibers offer high potential for use in next-generation electronics, such as electronic textiles and smart integrated textile systems, which require excellent deformability and high operational reliability.

Printed Organic Light-Emitting Diodes on Fabric with Roll-to-Roll Sputtered ITO Anode and Poly(vinyl alcohol) Planarization Layer

Electronic textiles, which are a combination of fabrics and electronics, can help realize wearable electronic devices by changing the rigidity of these textiles. We demonstrate organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by directly printing the emitting material on fabric substrates using the nozzle-printing technique. Printing the emitting material directly on a fabric substrate with a rough surface is difficult. To address this, we introduce a planarization layer by using a synthesized 3.5 wt % poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution. The sputtered ITO anode with the thermally annealed PVA planarization layer on a fabric substrate achieves a low sheet resistance in the range of 60-80 Ω/sq, whereas the ITO electrode without a PVA layer exhibits high sheet resistance values of 10-25 kΩ/sq. This result is because the thermally annealed PVA layer on the fabric surface has a uniform surface morphology and a water contact angle as high as 96°, thus acting as a protective layer with a waterproofing effect; in contrast, the water is completely absorbed on the rough surface without a PVA layer. The fabric-based OLEDs with a thermally annealed PVA layer exhibit a lower turn-on voltage of 3 V and higher luminance values of 5346 cd/m² at 8 V compared with the devices without a PVA layer (7 V and 3622 cd/m²) at 18 V. These fabric-based OLEDs with a PVA planarization layer can be produced by the nozzle-printing process and can achieve selective patterning as well as direct printing of the emitting material and ITO sputtering on a fabric substrate; furthermore, they emit well even when it bent into a circle with a radius of 1 cm.

Mechanically and electrically durable, stretchable electronic textiles for robust wearable electronics

A monolithic integration of high-performance soft electronic modules into various fabric materials has enabled a paradigm shift in wearable textile electronics. However, the current textile electronics have struggled against fatigue under repetitive deformation due to the absence of materials and structural design strategies for imparting electrical and mechanical robustness to individual fibers. Here, we report a mechanically and electrically durable, stretchable electronic textile (MED-ET) enabled by a precisely controlled diffusion of tough self-healing stretchable inks into fibers and an adoption of the kirigami-inspired design. Remarkably, the conductive percolative pathways in the fabric of MED-ET even under a harshly deformed environment were stably maintained due to an electrical recovery phenomenon which originates from the spontaneous rearrangement of Ag flakes in the self-healing polymer matrix. Specifically, such a unique property enabled damage-resistant performance when repetitive deformation and scratch were applied. In addition, the kirigami-inspired design was capable of efficiently dissipating the accumulated stress in the conductive fabric during stretching, thereby providing high stretchability (a tensile strain of 300%) without any mechanical fracture or electrical malfunction. Finally, we successfully demonstrate various electronic textile applications such as stretchable micro-light-emitting diodes (Micro-LED), electromyogram (EMG) monitoring and all-fabric thermoelectric devices (F-TEG).

Stretchable MED-ET was fabricated by a soaking process of self-healing stretchable Ag ink. Conductive pathways in MED-ET under a damaged environment were stably maintained due to an electrical recovery phenomenon which enables a robust device system.

Paper-based wearable electronics

Skin-interfaced wearable electronics can find a broad spectrum of applications in healthcare, human-machine interface, robotics, and others. The state-of-the-art wearable electronics usually suffer from costly and complex fabrication procedures and nonbiodegradable polymer substrates. Paper, comprising entangled micro- or nano-scale cellulose fibers, is compatible with scalable fabrication techniques and emerges as a sustainable, inexpensive, disposable, and biocompatible substrate for wearable electronics. Given various attractive properties (e.g., breathability, flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability) and rich tunability of surface chemistry and porous structures, paper offers many exciting opportunities for wearable electronics. In this review, we first introduce the intriguing properties of paper-based wearable electronics and strategies for cellulose modifications to satisfy specific demands. We then overview the applications of paper-based devices in biosensing, energy storage and generation, optoelectronics, soft actuators, and several others. Finally, we discuss some challenges that need to be addressed before practical uses and wide implementation of paper-based wearable electronics.

Roll-to-roll layer-by-layer assembly bark-shaped carbon nanotube/Ti3C2Tx MXene textiles for wearable electronics

Smart wearable electronics have drawn increasing attention for their potential applications in personal thermal management, human health monitoring, portable energy conversion/storage, electronic skin and so on. However, it is still a critical challenge to fabricate the multifunctional textiles with tunable morphology and performance while performing well in flexibility, air permeability, wearing comfortability. Herein, we develop a novel roll-to-roll layer-by-layer assembly strategy to construct bark-shaped carbon nanotube (CNT)/Ti₃C₂T_x MXene composite film on the fiber surface. The fabricated bark-shaped CNT/MXene decorated fabrics (CMFs) exhibit good flexibility, air permeability and electrical conductivity (sheet resistance, 6.6 Ω/□). In addition, the CMFs demonstrate good electrothermal performance (70.9 °C, 5 V), electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (EMI shielding effectiveness, 30.0 dB under X-Brand), and high sensitivity as the flexible piezoresistive sensors for monitoring the human motions. Importantly, our CMFs show distinctive EMI shielding mechanism, where a great proportion of incident electromagnetic microwaves are reflected by the bark-shaped CNT/MXene films owing to the multi-interface scattering effects. This work may provide a new strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional textile-based electronics and pave the way for smart wearable electronics.

Single Tungsten Atom-Modified Cotton Fabrics for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Degradation and Antibacterial Activity

Various single-atom materials exhibit distinguished performances in catalysis and biology. To boost their applications, single-atom-based strategies are highly demanded to exhibit repeatable functions on advanced wearable substrates. However, single-atom approaches are rarely reported to anchor on wearable materials, i.e., widely applied cotton fabrics. Here, we developed a simple method of loading uniformly dispersed single tungsten atoms on cotton via ordinary direct-dye processing to exhibit superior sustainable functions. The single sites of tungsten atom centers are constructed by binding oxygen-coordinated single tungsten atom on the cotton fabric surface via -COOH groups. Consequently, the band gap of single sites decreases significantly to 2.75 from 3.03 eV. Therefore, the single-site-modified cotton exhibits excellent visible-light-driven (>420 nm) photocatalytic degradation efficiency of organic dyes, which exceeds other reported cotton-based materials by nearly two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the single-site-modified cotton also exhibits great antibacterial performance due to reactive oxygen species. Moreover, the cotton with anchored single sites possesses great washing-resistance ability during 20 laundry cycles under soap-washing conditions. After recycling, the single sites on cotton have no obvious changes in the microstructure, which demonstrates the success of our sustainable strategy of single sites anchored on cotton. The single-site technique can be extended to many other elemental atoms on various wearable devices, providing a playground for functional material communities.
