Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diagnostic delay is high in acromegaly and leads to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to systematically assess the most prevalent clinical signs, symptoms and comorbidities of acromegaly at time of diagnosis. DESIGN A literature search (in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science) was performed on November 18, 2021, in collaboration with a medical information specialist. METHODS Prevalence data on (presenting) clinical signs, symptoms and comorbidities at time of diagnosis were extracted and synthesized as weighted mean prevalence. The risk of bias was assessed for each included study using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. RESULTS Risk of bias and heterogeneity was high in the 124 included articles. Clinical signs and symptoms with the highest weighted mean prevalence were: acral enlargement (90%), facial features (65%), oral changes (62%), headache (59%), fatigue/tiredness (53%; including daytime sleepiness: 48%), hyperhidrosis (47%), snoring (46%), skin changes (including oily skin: 37% and thicker skin: 35%), weight gain (36%) and arthralgia (34%). Concerning comorbidities, acromegaly patients more frequently had hypertension, left ventricle hypertrophy, dia/systolic dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmias, (pre)diabetes, dyslipidemia and intestinal polyps- and malignancy than age- and sex matched controls. Noteworthy, cardiovascular comorbidity was lower in more recent studies. Features that most often led to diagnosis of acromegaly were typical physical changes (acral enlargement, facial changes and prognatism), local tumor effects (headache and visual defect), diabetes, thyroid cancer and menstrual disorders. CONCLUSION Acromegaly manifests itself with typical physical changes but also leads to a wide variety of common comorbidities, emphasizing that recognition of a combination of these features is key to establishing the diagnosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) and edaravone dexborneol (Eda-Dex) are two promising reagents for stroke treatment. However, the impacts of NBP and Eda-Dex on poststroke mental deficits are still poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the influences of NBP and Eda-Dex on neurological function and cognitive behavior in rats with ischemic stroke. METHODS An ischemic stroke model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). After peritoneal administration of the drugs, the rats were subjected to neurological deficit evaluation, cerebral blood flow (CBF) assays, cerebral infarct area evaluations or behavioral tests. Brain tissues were collected and further analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blotting or immunohistochemistry. RESULTS NBP and Eda-Dex significantly decreased the neurological score, reduced the cerebral infarct area and improved CBF. Behavioral changes as assessed in the sucrose preference test, novel object recognition test, and social interaction test were significantly alleviated by NBP and Eda-Dex in rats with ischemic stroke. Moreover, NBP and Eda-Dex significantly suppressed inflammation by targeting the nuclear factor kappa-B/inducible nitric oxide synthase (NF-κB/iNOS) pathway and significantly inhibited oxidative stress by targeting the kelch-1ike ECH-associated protein l/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Keap1/Nrf2) pathway. In addition, NBP and Eda-Dex distinctly suppressed the activation of microglia and astrocytes and improved neuronal viability in the ischemic brain. CONCLUSIONS NBP and Eda-Dex improved neurological function and alleviated cognitive disorders in rats with ischemic stroke by synergistically inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. The proposed pathophysiological hypotheses of SLE are numerous, involving both innate and adaptive abnormal immune responses. SLE is characterized by the overproduction of different autoantibodies that form immune complexes, which cause damage in different organs. Current therapeutic modalities are anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive. In the last decade, we have witnessed the development of many biologicals targeting different cytokines and other molecules. One of them is interleukin-17 (IL-17), a central cytokine of a proinflammatory process that is mediated by a group of helper T cells called Th17. Direct inhibitors of IL-17 are used in psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthritis, and other diseases. Evidence about the therapeutic potential of Th17-targeted therapies in SLE is scarce, and probably the most promising is related to lupus nephritis. As SLE is a complex heterogeneous disease with different cytokines involved in its pathogenesis, it is highly unlikely that inhibition of only one molecule, such as IL-17, will be effective in the treatment of all clinical manifestations. Future studies should identify SLE patients that are eligible for Th17-targeted therapy.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Depression and anxiety are common complications after stroke and little is known about the modulatory roles of education and age. Our study aimed to evaluate the modulatory effects of education level on anxiety and depression after stroke and their effect on each age group. Adults with first stroke took part in this cross-sectional observational clinical study. We used the following instruments: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Montreal Cognitive Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Barthel index, and Functional Independence Measure. There were 89 patients. The mean (SD) age was 58.01 (13) years, mean (SD) years of education was 9.91 (5.22), 55.1% presented depression symptoms and 47.2% anxiety symptoms, 56.2% were young adults and 43.8% were older adults. We identified a negative association between education and anxiety score (r = -0. 269, p = 0.011) and depression score (r = -0.252, p = 0.017). In the linear regression analysis, we found that education is negatively associated with HADS, but this influence was more consistent in young adults. In conclusion, a higher education level reduces the risk of depression and anxiety, but their effect is less consistent in older adults.

Abstract
Introduction University counseling centers represent important resources for personal development, and students are increasingly turning to them for help. The present study aimed at, first, evaluating changing in psychological functioning before and after a university counseling intervention and, second, exploring which psychological variables predicted the intervention outcome. Methods For this purpose, 122 students who attended university counseling services were administered measures to assess personality traits, and measures to assess state variables - intended as contextual, rather than stable, alterations in functioning - such as anxiety, hopelessness and depression. Several Linear Mixed Models were performed to measure the differences between OQ-45 scores before and after the intervention (one for each OQ dimension and OQ total score); then, two steps of multiple regression analyses were performed. Results Significative reductions between pre-test and post-test OQ-45 scores were found, highlighting increased levels of well-being; personality traits seem not to be predictive of the intervention outcome, while state variables significantly contribute to the psychological wellbeing improvement after counseling intervention. Discussion Our findings highlight the importance of paying attention to the role of affective difficulties in predicting the counseling effectiveness.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression frequently affects patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). When these conditions co-occur, outcomes such as quality of life and life expectancy worsen. In everyday practice, this specific and prevalent disease-disease interaction complicates patient management. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) aim to provide the best available advice for clinical decision-making to improve patient care. This study will aim to evaluate how CPGs specifically address depression in patients with CVD, and whether they provide any operational guidance for screening and management of depression in the primary care and outpatient setting. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will conduct a systematic review of CPGs on CVD management published from 2012 to 2023. A broad literature search for guidelines will be performed through electronic medical databases, grey literature search tools, and websites of national and professional medical organisations.Based on the inclusion criteria, two independent reviewers will evaluate eligible guidelines for screening and management recommendations on depression in patients with CVD. Additional points to be evaluated will be any mention of drug-drug or drug-disease interactions, other aspects of specific relevance to treating physicians, as well as general information on mental health. We will assess the quality of CPGs with a recommendation regarding depression in CVD patients using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION As this systematic review is based on available published data, ethics approval and consent are not applicable. Our intent is that our results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal, presented at international scientific meetings, and distributed to healthcare providers. Abstract
Maresin-1 is an antiphlogistic agonist synthesized by macrophages from docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It has both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory properties and has been found to enhance neuroprotection and cognitive function. However, there is limited knowledge of its effects on depression and the potential mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the effects of Maresin-1 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depressive symptoms and neuroinflammation were investigated in mice and the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms were further clarified. Maresin-1 treatment (5 μg/kg, i.p.) led to improved tail suspension times, as well as distances moved in an open-field test but it did not improve reductions in sugar-water consumption in mice with depressive-like behaviors induced by LPS (1 mg/kg, i.p.); TSPO PETCT scanning showed that Maresin-1 reduced the standardized uptake value (SUV) of [18 F] DPA-714 in brain regions associated with depression (e.g., hippocampus and pre-frontal cortex), while immunofluorescence of hippocampal and indicated that Maresin-1 inhibited microglial activation reducing the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β and NLRP3. The RNA sequencing of mouse hippocampi showed that genes expressed differentially between Maresin-1-treated and LPS-treated tissue were associated with tight connections between cells and the stress-activated MAPK cascade negative regulatory pathways. Overall, this study demonstrates that peripheral application of Maresin-1 could partially relieve LPS-induced depressive-like behaviors and showed for the first time that this effect was related to its anti-inflammatory action on microglia, thus providing new clues for the pharmacological mechanism underlying the anti-depression properties of Maresin-1.

Abstract
Depression is the most common mental illnesses worldwide. The consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) has increased globally due to its affordability and convenience; however, only a few studies have investigated the link between UPF intake and depression in the general population. We investigated the associations between UPF and depression using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 9463 individuals (4200 males and 5263 females) aged above 19 years old participated in this study. The prevalence of depression was identified using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Dietary intake was assessed through a 24-h recall interview. The percentage of energy from UPFs was ascertained based on the NOVA classification. The associations between the quartile ranges of UPF intake and depression were estimated using logistic regression models. Individuals in the highest quartile had a 1.40 times higher likelihood of having depression, with marginal significance (95% confidence intervals (CIs) = 1.00-1.96). In a sex-specific stratification, only females demonstrated a significant association (odds ratio (OR) = 1.51, 95% CI 1.04-2.21), even after adjusting for confounders (p-value for trend = 0.023). Our findings revealed a significant association between higher UPF intake and depression among females but not among males in the Korean general population.

Abstract
Importance Depression is prevalent. Treatment guidelines recommend practitioner-supported cognitive behavioral therapy self-help (CBT-SH) for mild to moderate depression in adults; however, dropout rates are high. Alternative approaches are required. Objective To determine if practitioner-supported mindfulness-based cognitive therapy self-help (MBCT-SH) is superior to practitioner-supported CBT-SH at reducing depressive symptom severity at 16 weeks postrandomization among patients with mild to moderate depression and secondarily to examine if practitioner-supported MBCT-SH is cost-effective compared with practitioner-supported CBT-SH. Design, Setting, and Participants This was an assessor- and participant-blinded superiority randomized clinical trial with 1:1 automated online allocation stratified by center and depression severity comparing practitioner-supported MBCT-SH with practitioner-supported CBT-SH for adults experiencing mild to moderate depression. Recruitment took place between November 24, 2017, and January 31, 2020. The study took place in 10 publicly funded psychological therapy services in England (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies [IAPT]). A total of 600 clients attending IAPT services were assessed for eligibility, and 410 were enrolled. Participants met diagnostic criteria for mild to moderate depression. Data were analyzed from January to October 2021. Interventions Participants received a copy of either an MBCT-SH or CBT-SH workbook and were offered 6 support sessions with a trained practitioner. Main Outcomes and Measures The preregistered primary outcome was Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score at 16 weeks postrandomization. The primary analysis was intention-to-treat with treatment arms masked. Results Of 410 randomized participants, 255 (62.2%) were female, and the median (IQR) age was 32 (25-45) years. At 16 weeks postrandomization, practitioner-supported MBCT-SH (n = 204; mean [SD] PHQ-9 score, 7.2 [4.8]) led to significantly greater reductions in depression symptom severity compared with practitioner-supported CBT-SH (n = 206; mean [SD] PHQ-9 score, 8.6 [5.5]), with a between-group difference of -1.5 PHQ-9 points (95% CI, -2.6 to -0.4; P = .009; d = -0.36). The probability of MBCT-SH being cost-effective compared with CBT-SH exceeded 95%. However, although between-group effects on secondary outcomes were in the hypothesized direction, they were mostly nonsignificant. Three serious adverse events were reported, all deemed not study related. Conclusions and Relevance In this randomized clinical trial, practitioner-supported MBCT-SH was superior to standard recommended treatment (ie, practitioner-supported CBT-SH) for mild to moderate depression in terms of both clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Findings suggest that MBCT-SH for mild to moderate depression should be routinely offered to adults in primary care services. Trial Registration isrctn.org Identifier: ISRCTN13495752.

Abstract
Introduction Neuroticism, a personality trait, can predict major depressive disorder (MDD). The current study aims to determine whether a) neuroticism is a feature of the acute state of MDD, including suicidal behaviors (SB); and b) adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with neuroticism in MDD. Methods This study included 133 participants, 67 healthy controls and 66 MDD patients, and assessed the Big 5 Inventory (BFI), ACEs using the ACE Questionnaire, and the phenome of depression using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) scores to assess current SB. Results Neuroticism was significantly higher in MDD than controls, and it explained 64.9% of the variance in the depression phenome (a latent vector extracted from HAM-D, BDI, STAI, and current SB scores). The other BFI domains had much less (extraversion, agreeableness) or no effect (openness, conscientiousness). One latent vector could be extracted from the phenome, lifetime dysthymia, lifetime anxiety disorders and neuroticism scores. Neglect (physical and emotional) and abuse (physical, neglect and sexual) account for approximately 30% of the variance in this latent vector. Partial Least Squares analysis showed that the effects of neglect on the phenome were partially mediated by neuroticism, whereas the effects of abuse were completely mediated by neuroticism. Discussion Neuroticism (trait) and the MDD phenome (state) are both manifestations of the same latent core, with neuroticism being a subclinical manifestation of MDD.

Abstract
The objectives of this systematic review were to estimate the prevalence of depression and to identify the relationship between depression and quality of life (QOL) among high school and university students. Literature search was performed in the Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Scielo, CINAHL and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA methodology. The results were presented through descriptive approaches and meta-analysis. Thirty-six studies met the eligibility criteria, and twenty-six were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 27% (95% CI 0.21-0.33) among students, being high school and university students was 25% (95% CI 0.14-0.37) and 27% (95% CI 0.20-0.34), respectively, and most studies have shown that depression was associated with low QOL. Among the limitations of the study is the difficulty of generalizing the results found, considering the large sample of health students. New studies should be conducted considering the severity, duration, and patterns of depressive symptoms in high school and university students, to better understand the relationship between depression and QOL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent among patients seeking outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorders (AUD) and if depression and anxiety are addressed the prognosis is improved. Screening instruments for depression and anxiety have been validated in populations suffering from drug use disorders, but not in populations suffering from AUD. The aim of this study was to validate four self-administrated screening instruments (PHQ-9, GAD-7, Kessler-6, and SRQ) and calculate the optimal cut-off value for identifying depression and anxiety. METHODS The study included 73 patients with self-reported depression or anxiety during AUD treatment. Each patient filled out the above-mentioned instruments and was subsequently interviewed by trained clinicians blinded to the results of the instruments with the Present State Examination to establish a diagnosis of depression or anxiety according to ICD-10. ROC curves were constructed for each instrument and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated using patients with no depression or anxiety as reference. Youden's index was calculated to assess the optimal cut-off for each instrument. RESULTS A total of 33 (45.2%) were diagnosed with depression or anxiety. The AUC for PHQ-9, GAD-7, Kessler-6, and SRQ were 0.767, 0.630, 0.793, and 0.698 respectively. Kessler-6, the instruments performing best based on the AUC, identified 27 (82%) of the 33 patients using a cut-off of 10 points. CONCLUSION Kessler-6 seems to be valid and reliable in identifying patients requiring treatment for depression or anxiety among patients seeking treatment for AUD who are reporting depression or anxiety.

Abstract
Background Psychological well-being is important among individuals with myocardial infarction (MI) given the clear links between stress, depression, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Stress and depressive disorders are more prevalent in women than men after MI. Resilience may protect against stress and depressive disorders after a traumatic event. Longitudinal data are lacking in populations post MI. We examined the role of resilience in the psychological recovery of women post MI, over time. Methods and Results We analyzed a sample from a longitudinal observational multicenter study (United States, Canada) of women post MI, between 2016 and 2020. Perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale-4 [PSS-4]) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2]) were assessed at baseline (time of MI) and 2 months post MI. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and resilience (Brief Resilience Scale [BRS]) were collected at baseline. Low and normal/high resilience groups were established as per published cutoffs (BRS scores <3 or ≥3). Mixed-effects modeling was used to examine associations between resilience and psychological recovery over 2 months. The sample included 449 women, mean (SD) age, 62.2 (13.2) years, of whom 61.1% identified as non-Hispanic White, 18.5% as non-Hispanic Black, and 15.4% as Hispanic/Latina. Twenty-three percent had low resilience. The low resilience group had significantly higher PSS-4 and PHQ-2 scores than the normal/high resilience group at all time points. In adjusted models, both groups showed a decrease in PSS-4 scores over time. Conclusions In a diverse cohort of women post MI, higher resilience is associated with better psychological recovery over time. Future work should focus on developing strategies to strengthen resilience and improve psychological well-being for women with MI. Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that has diverse clinical manifestations, ranging from restricted cutaneous involvement to life-threatening systemic organ involvement. The heterogeneity of pathomechanisms that lead to SLE contributes to between-patient variation in clinical phenotype and treatment response. Ongoing efforts to dissect cellular and molecular heterogeneity in SLE could facilitate the future development of stratified treatment recommendations and precision medicine, which is a considerable challenge for SLE. In particular, some genes involved in the clinical heterogeneity of SLE and some phenotype-related loci (STAT4, IRF5, PDGF genes, HAS2, ITGAM and SLC5A11) have an association with clinical features of the disease. An important part is also played by epigenetic varation (in DNA methylation, histone modifications and microRNAs) that influences gene expression and affects cell function without modifying the genome sequence. Immune profiling can help to identify an individual's specific response to a therapy and can potentially predict outcomes, using techniques such as flow cytometry, mass cytometry, transcriptomics, microarray analysis and single-cell RNA sequencing. Furthermore, the identification of novel serum and urinary biomarkers would enable the stratification of patients according to predictions of long-term outcomes and assessments of potential response to therapy.

Abstract
This study attempted to illustrate whether mental health deterioration could be alleviated by high social capital in an environment with high economic inequality. Daily mental stress was employed as a mental health factor when analyzing the association with economic inequality in the Seoul Survey data. Regarding social capital, community trust and altruism were included as cognitive dimensions, and participation and cooperation were included as structural dimensions in each model. The first finding showed a significantly positive relationship between economic inequality and daily stress, meaning that, like other mental health problems, daily mental stress is also high in regions with high economic inequality. Second, the slope of the daily stress increased in respondents with high social trust and participation was alleviated in an economically unequal environment. This indicates that social trust and participation have a buffering effect by moderating the slope of daily stress in societies with high inequality. Third, the buffering effect differs depending on the social capital factor. The buffering effect of trust and participation showed in an unequal environment, while the buffering effect of cooperation showed regardless of the unequal environment. In summary, social capital factors showed the effect of relieving daily mental stress in the relationship with economic inequality. Also, the buffering effect of social capital on mental health may show different aspects for each element.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses that highly impairs quality of life. Pharmacological interventions are mainly focused on altered monoamine neurotransmission, which is considered the primary event underlying the disease's etiology. However, many other neuropathological mechanisms that contribute to the disease's progression and clinical symptoms have been identified. These include oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, hippocampal atrophy, reduced synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis, the depletion of neurotrophic factors, and the dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Current therapeutic options are often unsatisfactory and associated with adverse effects. This review highlights the most relevant findings concerning the role of flavonols, a ubiquitous class of flavonoids in the human diet, as potential antidepressant agents. In general, flavonols are considered to be both an effective and safe therapeutic option in the management of depression, which is largely based on their prominent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, preclinical studies have provided evidence that they are capable of restoring the neuroendocrine control of the HPA axis, promoting neurogenesis, and alleviating depressive-like behavior. Although these findings are promising, they are still far from being implemented in clinical practice. Hence, further studies are needed to more comprehensively evaluate the potential of flavonols with respect to the improvement of clinical signs of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) has increasing prevalence with age. Both objective measures of cognitive dysfunction and subjective report of cognitive difficulties related to MDD are often thought to worsen with increasing age. However, few studies have directly evaluated these characteristics across the adult lifespan. METHODS Participants included 23,594 adults completing objective and subjective measures of cognition on an online research registry. Linear regression including interactions of age group with depression was used to evaluate the association of self-reported MDD with measures of cognition in three age groups: 21-40 years; 41-60 years; 61+ years. RESULTS MDD (n = 2127) demonstrated poorer objective cognitive performance and greater subjective ratings of cognitive difficulties across all domains assessed compared to non-depressed individuals (ND; n = 21,467). Significant interactions of age group and MDD status with objective and subjective measures of cognition were observed for both middle age and older adults when compared to young adults but few significant differences between middle-aged and older adults were evident. LIMITATIONS This study relied on self-report of MDD diagnosis, utilized remotely administered and unsupervised measures of cognition, and the sample was not diverse. CONCLUSIONS The magnitude of association between MDD and cognitive correlates appears to plateau in middle age. Our results suggest that increased rates of dementia are not due to greater cognitive consequence of MDD in older adults and that age effects, and not greater effects of depression, may lead to increased diagnosis of MDD based on subjective report of cognitive symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Numerous studies have found an association between autoimmune diseases of the nervous system (ADNS) and schizophrenia (SCZ), but the findings remain controversial. We conducted the first meta-analysis to summarize the current evidence from cohort studies that evaluated the association between ADNS and SCZ. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were comprehensively searched until May 30, 2022 for articles on the association between ADNS and SCZ. Every included study was reported effect size with 95% CIs for the association between ADNS and SCZ. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were used to assess the heterogeneity. RESULTS A total of 8 cohort studies with 12 cohorts were included in the meta-analysis. We observed a significant association between ADNS and SCZ (RR = 1.42; 95%CI, 1.18-1.72). Subgroup analysis showed that the risk of SCZ was significantly increased when ADNS were used as exposure factors (RR = 1.48; 95%CI, 1.15-1.89), whereas with SCZ did not observe an increased risk of subsequent ADNS (RR = 1.33; 95%CI, 0.92-1.92); multiple sclerosis (MS) was positively associated with SCZ (RR = 1.36; 95%CI, 1.12-1.66), but no significant association was found between Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and SCZ (RR = 1.90; 95%CI, 0.87-4.17). Meanwhile, we found location was the source of heterogeneity. LIMITATIONS High heterogeneity was observed (I2 = 92.0%), and only English literature was included in the meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS We found a positive association between ADNS and SCZ, and the association was different across the different types of ADNS. The results of the study are helpful for clinicians to carry out targeted preventive measures for ADNS and SCZ.

Abstract
There is a complex interplay between sleep problems and depression. This study explored the possible effects of rumination and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep on the relationship between sleep quality and depression. A cross-sectional survey of 1240 Chinese adults was conducted to assess the possible relationships. The results showed a chain mediating effect of reflection rumination and brooding rumination on the relationship between sleep quality and depression, accounting for 38.91% of the total variance. A moderating role of unreasonable attitudes about sleep was also discovered among the study participants, which enhanced the relationship between reflection and brooding, leading to a further increase in this relationship. Individually-tailored approaches targeting rumination and cognition may more effectively alleviate depression or co-morbid sleep problems and depression than the current standards of care.

Abstract
The pandemic of COVID-19 had not only led to healthy-damage behaviors, but also raised people's attention to health and generated health-promoting behaviors. However, little is known about the mechanism underlying how the perception of COVID-19 intensity affects health behaviors. The present study investigated the mediating effect of DBTP between event intensity and health behaviors and the moderating role of gender in this relation. Nine hundred and twenty-four Chinese college students (348 males and 576 females) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires, including COVID-19 Event Intensity Scale, Chinese version of Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) and Healthy Lifestyle Scale. Moderated mediation analysis was performed using conditional process analysis. The results showed that COVID-19 intensity had a positive predictive effect on college students' health behaviors. DBTP played a partial mediating role in the relationship between COVID-19 intensity and health behaviors for male and not female. In female group, COVID-19 intensity and DBTP was significantly linked with health behaviour; however, COVID-19 intensity and DBTP were not significantly linked. The findings indicated that COVID-19 intensity perceived by college students could increase their health behaviors, and intervention focus on BTP may contribute to health behaviors only in male. Practical implications were discussed in this academic research.

Abstract
The roles of gut microbiota and susceptibility genes in patients with major depression disorder (MDD) are not well understood. Examining the microbiome and host genetics might be helpful for clinical decision-making. Patients with MDD were recruited in this study and subsequently treated for eight weeks. We identified the differences between the population with a response after two weeks and those with a response after eight weeks. The factors that were significantly correlated with efficacy were used to predict the treatment response. The differences in the importance of microbiota and genetics in prediction were analyzed. Our study identified rs58010457 as a potentially key locus affecting the treatment effect. Different microbiota and enriched pathways might play different roles in the response after two and eight weeks. We found that the area under the curve (AUC) value was greater than 0.8 for both random forest models. The contribution of different components to the AUC was evaluated by removing genetic information, microbiota abundance, and pathway data. The gut microbiome was an important predictor of the response after eight weeks, while genetics was an important predictor of the response after two weeks. These results suggested a dynamic effect of interaction among genetics and gut microbes on treatment. Furthermore, these results provide new guidance for clinical decisions: in cases of inadequate treatment effects after two weeks, the composition of the intestinal flora can be improved by diet therapy, which could ultimately affect the efficacy.

Abstract
As a complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the neuropsychiatric form may manifest with neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Diagnosing neuropsychiatric SLE can be challenging due to the heterogeneity of this disease manifestation and the possibilities of investigation. This research aims to identify the possible associations between inflammation and thrombotic biomarkers alongside anxiety and/or depression manifestations in SLE patients. A group of 65 outpatients were investigated regarding the levels of depression, anxiety, disability, quality of life and other specific serum biomarkers linked with inflammation or coagulopathies. The results showed severe depression in eight participants, moderate depression in 22 (33.85%), and 26 (40%) subjects with mild depression. Anxiety was more prevalent within 64 participants (98.46%), while a degree of disability was reported by 52 participants (80%). Quality of life evaluated by EQ5D revealed a medium value of 1.57, and EQ5D VAS health medium value was 57.95 and was correlated with anxiety. A strong positive correlation between depression, anxiety and antibodies associated with anti-cardiolipin and anti beta2 glycoprotein I antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, ICAM-1, low C4 a and anti-ribosomal P antibodies were identified. These data results suggest that autoimmune/inflammatory and ischemic/thrombotic pathways could contribute to depression and anxiety as neuropsychiatric SLE manifestations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is rapid growth of older people in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMICs). The aim of this review was to assess the literature on prevalence of anxiety and depression in this demographic, which to our knowledge, has not yet been conducted. METHODS Databases including Medline, PsychInfo, Embase, Scielo and African Journals Online were searched for terms including "mental disorders", "neurotic disorders", "mood disorders" and "anxiety disorders". Studies published between 1990 and 2020 providing data on older people (≥50 years) in LMICs (defined by World Bank Criteria) were included and quality-assessed. Meta-analysis was conducted on a subset of higher-quality studies to derive pooled prevalence estimates of depression. RESULTS One hundred and forty relevant studies were identified, of which thirty-two were included in meta-analysis. One hundred and fifteen studies reported depression prevalence only, 19 reported both depression and anxiety, and six reported anxiety only. In all studies identified, depression prevalence ranged from 0.5 % to 62.7 %, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder prevalence ranged from 0.2 % to 32.2 %. The pooled prevalence of depression on meta-analysis was 10.5 % (95 % CI, 8.9 % - 11.2 %). Reported prevalence rates of depression were significantly different in studies using ICD-10 compared with DSM criteria, and between community and clinical settings. LIMITATIONS The search strategy contained bias towards English language papers and high income country (HIC) publications. There is significant heterogeneity within the meta-analysis. DISCUSSION A wide range of methodologies and clinical criteria are used in prevalence studies of depression and anxiety in older people. Studies using screening tools found higher prevalence rates; clinicians and researchers should ensure diagnosis is made with gold-standard clinical criteria. Meta-analysis data suggest that rates of depression are similar in older people in LMICs compared to HICs but mental healthcare resources are limited, suggesting a large potential treatment gap.

Abstract
There is a distinct preponderance of female insomniacs when compared to male insomniacs. The aim of this study was to examine possible gender differences in the causes for insomnia, and the phenotypes of insomnia, and to investigate whether gender-specific insomnia diagnosis and treatment could be relevant in clinical practice. Data were collected from 121 insomniac patients by a medical specialist in the framework of normal clinical practice in Germany. The data consist of the patient’s medical history and various sleep-related patient questionnaires. Data from both genders were tested for independence using chi-square tests and Mann–Whitney U tests. We found a correlation between the gender of the patient and insomnia phenotypes in several aspects: concomitant lipometabolic disorders, diabetes mellitus, and high BMIs are more common in male insomniacs (p < 0.05). Frequency of insomnia occurrence in certain age groups, insomnia severity, distribution of SOI (sleep onset insomnia), SMI (sleep maintenance insomnia) and combined SOI + SMI, sleep duration, the time needed to seek medical consultation, trying out sleep-inducing drugs/techniques and the trigger, etiology and familial predisposition of the insomniac disorder were independent of the patient’s gender. We would like to re-evaluate the results with a larger number of patients in a further study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a need for an interview-based measure to assess Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) included in the text revision of the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorder (DSM-5-TR) and 11th edition of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-11). We evaluated the psychometric properties of the Traumatic Grief Inventory-Clinician Administered (TGI-CA); a new interview measuring DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 PGD severity and probable caseness. METHODS In 211 Dutch and 222 German bereaved adults, the: (i) factor structure, (ii) internal consistency, (iii) test-retest reliability, (iv) measurement invariance across subgroups (e.g., differing in language), (v) prevalence of probable caseness, (vi) convergent validity, and (vii) known-groups validity were examined. RESULTS Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) showed acceptable fit for the unidimensional model for DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 PGD. Omega values indicated good internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was high. Multi-group CFAs demonstrated configural and metric invariance for DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 PGD criteria for all group-comparisons; for some we found support for scalar invariance. Rates of probable caseness for DSM-5-TR PGD were lower than ICD-11 PGD. Optimal agreement in probable caseness was reached when increasing the number of accessory symptoms for ICD-11 PGD from 1+ to 3+. Convergent and known-groups validity was demonstrated for both criteria-sets. LIMITATIONS The TGI-CA was developed to assess PGD severity and probable caseness. Clinical diagnostic interviews for PGD are needed. CONCLUSIONS The TGI-CA seems a reliable and valid interview for DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 PGD symptomatology. More research in larger and more diverse samples is needed to further test its psychometric properties.

Abstract
BackgroundDepression is a mental health disorder characterized by affective, somatic, and cognitive symptoms. Attention bias modification (ABM) has been widely used to treat depression. However, the results seem inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of ABM for depression and to explore the optimal protocol of ABM.MethodsSeven databases were systematically searched from their inceptions to 5 October 2022 to include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ABM for depression. Two independent reviewers selected the eligible articles, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias using version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (ROB 2.0) for randomized trials. The primary outcome was the evaluation of depressive symptoms using widely accepted and validated scales. The secondary outcomes included rumination and attentional control. Meta-analysis was conducted by using RevMan (version 5.4) and Stata (version 12.0). Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions were performed to identify the source of heterogeneity. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE).ResultsA total of 19 trials involving 20 datasets (1,262 participants) were included. The overall risk of bias in one study was rated as low risk of bias, three studies were considered as high, and the remaining studies were some concerns. Compared with attention control training (ACT), ABM had a greater effect in the improvement of depression (SMD = −0.48, 95% CI −0.80 to −0.17, I2 = 82%) and rumination (MD = −3.46, 95% CI −6.06 to −0.87, I2 = 0%). No significant differences were observed in the attentional control outcome between ABM and ACT (MD = 3.07, 95% CI −0.52 to 6.65, I2 = 0%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that adults exhibited a greater decrease in depression scores than adolescents. ABM using the dot-probe task, training target stimulus presented by face, and training directions by left–right were associated with better antidepressant effects. ABM training delivered in the laboratory tended to yield a better effect than those conducted at home. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were robust. The certainty of the evidence for all outcomes was low or very low, and publication bias may exist.ConclusionDue to high heterogeneity and limited studies, not enough current evidence supported that ABM could be an effective intervention to relieve depressive symptoms. More rigorous RCTs are required to verify the benefits and to explore the optimal protocol of ABM training for depression.Systematic Review Registration: [PROSPERO], identifier [No. CRD42021279163].

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Currently, the structural magnetic resonance imaging-based MDD diagnosis models mainly utilize local grayscale information or morphological characteristics in a single site with small samples. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that different brain structures in different circuits have distinct developmental timing, but mature coordinately within the same functional circuit. Thus, establishing an attention-guided unified classification framework with deep learning and individual structural covariance networks in a large multisite dataset could facilitate developing an accurate diagnosis strategy. Our results showed that attention-guided classification could improve the classification accuracy from primary 75.1% to ultimate 76.54%. Furthermore, the discriminative features of regional covariance connectivities and local structural characteristics were found to be mainly located in prefrontal cortex, insula, superior temporal cortex, and cingulate cortex, which have been widely reported to be closely associated with depression. Our study demonstrated that our attention-guided unified deep learning framework may be an effective tool for MDD diagnosis. The identified covariance connectivities and structural features may serve as biomarkers for MDD.

Abstract
As a chronic autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can also affect the central and the peripheral nervous system causing symptoms which are summed up as neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). These symptoms are heterogenous including cognitive impairment, seizures, and fatigue, leading to morbidity or even mortality. At present, little is known about the pathophysiological processes involved in NPSLE. This review focuses on the current knowledge of the pathogenesis of NPSLE gained from the investigation of animal models, autoantibodies, and neuroimaging techniques. The antibodies investigated the most are anti-ribosomal P protein antibodies (Anti-rib P) and anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid Receptor 2 antibodies (Anti-NR2), which represent a subpopulation of anti-dsDNA autoantibodies. Experimental data demonstrates that Anti-rib P and Anti-NR2 cause different neurological pathologies when applied intravenously (i.v.), intrathecally or intracerebrally in mice. Moreover, the investigation of lupus-prone mice, such as the MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr strain (MRL/lpr) and the New Zealand black/New Zealand white mice (NZB × NZW F1) showed that circulating systemic antibodies cause different neuropsychiatric symptoms compared to intrathecally produced antibodies. Furthermore, neuroimaging techniques including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) are commonly used tools to investigate structural and functional abnormalities in NPSLE patients. Current research suggests that the pathogenesis of NPSLE is heterogenous, complex and not yet fully understood. However, it demonstrates that further investigation is needed to develop individual therapy in NPSLE.

Abstract
Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common complication of stroke that can damage patients’ brains. More and more studies have been conducted on PSD in recent years, but the exact mechanism is still not understood. Currently, animal models provide an alternative approach to better understand the pathophysiology of PSD and may also pave the way for the discovery of new treatments for depression. This study investigated the therapeutic effect and mechanism of aloe-emodin (AE) on PSD rats. Previous studies have shown that AE positively affects PSD in rats by improving depression, increasing their activities and curiosities, enhancing the number of neurons, and ameliorating damage to brain tissue. Meanwhile, AE could up-regulate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophic 3 (NTF3), but it could also down-regulate the expression of aquaporins (AQP3, AQP4, and AQP5), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), which is helpful in maintaining homeostasis and alleviating encephaledema. AE may be a prospective solution in the future for the treatment of PSD patients.

Abstract
AIM There is a well-founded relation between bullying and depression, which may eventually lead to suicidal behavior. Repurposing of antidiabetic drugs for the treatment of depression started to glow, which open new horizons to introduce the antidiabetic medications as new treatment picks in depression. Dulaglutide has been approved as remedy of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Consequently, our scope of work is to investigate the ability of dulaglutide to indulgence depression via deeply reconnoitering the Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor and cAMP/PKA Signaling Pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty mice were divided into two groups; one with and the other without the induction of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS). Each group was subdivided into two subsets; the first one was treated with saline for 42 days, while the other was treated with saline for 20 days, then with dulaglutide (0.6 mg/kg/week) for four weeks. KEY FINDINGS CSDS group showed a lessening in the social interaction ratio and sucrose consumption. They spent less exploration time in the open arms, and more time in the closed arms in elevated plus maze test as compared to controls. Furthermore, the CSDS group had a higher expression of NOD- like receptor protein-3 which explained the elevation in inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β, IL-18, IL-6 and TNF-α) along with diminution in GLP-1R, cAMP/PKA levels. Treatment with dulaglutide markedly reversed the above-mentioned parameters via bolstering the GLP-1R/cAMP/PKA pathway. SIGNIFICANCE NLRP3 inflammasome activation expedites depression. Dulaglutide activates the GLP-1R/cAMP/PKA pathway, hence offering a novel therapeutic intervention to hinder depression.

Abstract
Ukraine has been embroiled in an increasing war since February 2022. In addition to Ukrainians, the Russo-Ukraine war has affected Poles due to the refugee crisis and the Taiwanese, who are facing a potential crisis with China. We examined the mental health status and associated factors in Ukraine, Poland, and Taiwan. The data will be used for future reference as the war is still ongoing. From March 8 to April 26, 2022, we conducted an online survey using snowball sampling techniques in Ukraine, Poland, and Taiwan. Depression, anxiety, and stress were measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (DASS)-21 item scale; post-traumatic stress symptoms by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and coping strategies by the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief-COPE). We used multivariate linear regression to identify factors significantly associated with DASS-21 and IES-R scores. There were 1626 participants (Poland: 1053; Ukraine: 385; Taiwan: 188) in this study. Ukrainian participants reported significantly higher DASS-21 (p < 0.001) and IES-R (p < 0.01) scores than Poles and Taiwanese. Although Taiwanese participants were not directly involved in the war, their mean IES-R scores (40.37 ± 16.86) were only slightly lower than Ukrainian participants (41.36 ± 14.94). Taiwanese reported significantly higher avoidance scores (1.60 ± 0.47) than the Polish (0.87 ± 0.53) and Ukrainian (0.91 ± 0.5) participants (p < 0.001). More than half of the Taiwanese (54.3%) and Polish (80.3%) participants were distressed by the war scenes in the media. More than half (52.5%) of the Ukrainian participants would not seek psychological help despite a significantly higher prevalence of psychological distress. Multivariate linear regression analyses found that female gender, Ukrainian and Polish citizenship, household size, self-rating health status, past psychiatric history, and avoidance coping were significantly associated with higher DASS-21 and IES-R scores after adjustment of other variables (p < 0.05). We have identified mental health sequelae in Ukrainian, Poles, and Taiwanese with the ongoing Russo-Ukraine war. Risk factors associated with developing depression, anxiety, stress, and post-traumatic stress symptoms include female gender, self-rating health status, past psychiatric history, and avoidance coping. Early resolution of the conflict, online mental health interventions, delivery of psychotropic medications, and distraction techniques may help to improve the mental health of people who stay inside and outside Ukraine.

Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder impacting 10-16% of Americans in their lifetime. Approximately 60% of individuals with MDD have comorbid anxiety disorders. Additionally, although scarce research has examined eating disorders (EDs) in depression, a bidirectional association exists between ED and MDD symptoms. The current pilot study (N = 31 individuals with moderate to severe depression) modeled networks of depressive, anxiety, and ED symptoms using intensive time-series data. This study also tested if temporal central symptoms predicted six-month clinical outcomes. The most central symptoms were guilt, self-dislike, lack of energy, and difficulty concentrating. Several anxiety and ED symptoms were also central, including physical anxiety, social anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and desire for thinness. The central symptom crying predicted six-month depression with a medium effect size. These findings suggest anxiety and ED symptoms may influence the day-to-day course of depression in some individuals with comorbid diagnoses, but predictors of symptoms across hours may differ from predictors across longer time scales (i.e., months). Time scale should be considered when conducting and interpreting research on MDD. Research, assessment, and treatment for MDD should continue to explore transdiagnostic approaches including anxiety and ED symptoms to optimize care for individuals with complex presentations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common chronic and life-threatening diseases. Due to the changes made in the normal living conditions of people after suffering from cardiovascular diseases, the appearance of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress is common among these patients. The results of the studies show the different prevalence of these disorders, so this study aimed to standardize the global prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress in Cardiac patients by a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. METHODS The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted from 2000 to 2022. National and international databases were considered to retrieve related studies, including SID, Magiran, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS). Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist was used to evaluate studies qualitatively. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed by I2 index, and data analysis was performed in Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. RESULTS After reviewing the retrieved studies, finally 68 studies on the prevalence of depression with a sample size of 110,219, 36 studies on the prevalence of anxiety with a sample size of 72,374 and 5 studies on the prevalence of stress with a sample size of 533 considered for the meta-analysis. Based on the results of the Meta-Analysis, the overall estimation of the prevalence of depression was 31.3 % (95 % confidence interval: 25.4/0.38 %), anxiety prevalence; 32.9 % (95 % confidence interval: 21.9-46.6 %) and stress prevalence was 57.7 % (95 % confidence interval: 45.3-3.3 %). CONCLUSION The result of the present study shows the high prevalence rate of depression, anxiety, and stress in cardiac patients. Therefore, it is recommended that health professionals and policymakers pay more attention to preventing and controlling these disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impaired reward processing and reward learning. The literature is inconclusive regarding whether these impairments persist after remission. The current study examined reward processing during a probabilistic learning task in individuals in remission from MDD (n = 19) and never depressed healthy controls (n = 31) matched for age and sex. The outcome measures were pupil dilation (an indirect index of noradrenergic activity and arousal) and computational modeling parameters. METHOD Participants completed two versions (facial/nonfacial feedback) of probabilistic reward learning task with changing contingencies. Pupil dilation was measured with a corneal reflection eye tracker. The hypotheses and analysis plan were preregistered. RESULT Healthy controls had larger pupil dilation following losses than gains (p <.001), whereas no significant difference between outcomes was found in individuals with a history of MDD, resulting in an interaction between group and outcome (β = 0.81, SE = 0.34, t = 2.37, p = .018). The rMDD group also achieved lower mean score at the last trial (t[46.77] = 2.12, p = .040) as well as a smaller proportion of correct choices (t[46.70] = 2.09, p = .041) compared with healthy controls. CONCLUSION Impaired reward processing may persist after remission from MDD and could constitute a latent risk factor for relapse. Measuring pupil dilation in a reward learning task is a promising method for identifying reward processing abnormalities linked to MDD. The task is simple and noninvasive, which makes it feasible for clinical research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The habenula is a brain structure implicated in depression, yet with unknown molecular mechanisms. Several phosphodiesterases (PDEs) have been associated with a risk of depression. Although the role of PDE7A in the brain is unknown, it has enriched expression in the medial habenula, suggesting that it may play a role in depression. METHODS We analysed: (1) habenula volume assessed by 3-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 84 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 41 healthy controls; (2) frequencies of 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PDE7A gene in 235 patients and 41 controls; and (3) both indices in 80 patients and 27 controls. The analyses considered gender, age, body mass index and season of the MRI examination. RESULTS The analysis did not reveal habenula volumetric changes in MDD patients regardless of PDE7A SNPs. However, in the combined group, the carriers of one or more mutations among 10 SNPs in the PDE7A gene had a lower volume of the left habenula (driven mainly by rs972362 and rs138599850 mutations) and consequently had the reduced habenular laterality index in comparison with individuals without PDE7A mutations. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest the implication of the PDE7A gene into mechanisms determining the habenula structure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression affects not only the central nervous system, but also the peripheral system. Xiaoyaosan (XYS), a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription, exhibits definite anti-depression effects demonstrated both clinically and experimentally. However, its compatibility has not been entirely revealed due partly to the complex compositions of herbs contained. AIM Based on the strategy of "Efficacy Group", this study aimed to reveal the compatibility of XYS from the perspective of "gut-liver-kidney" axis. METHODS Firstly, XYS was divided into two efficacy groups, i.e. Shugan (SG) and Jianpi (JP) groups. Classic behaviors of rats were measured to confirm the anti-depression effects of XYS and its two efficacy groups. On top of this, gut microbiota analysis and kidney metabolomics were performed by 16S rRNA sequencing and 1H NMR, respectively. RESULTS We found that XYS and its efficacy groups significantly regulated the abnormalities of behaviors and kidney metabolism of depressed rats, as well as intestinal disorders, but to different degrees. The regulatory effects of XYS and its efficacy groups on behaviors and kidney metabolomics of depressed rats had the same order, i.e. XYS > SG > JP, while the order of regulating gut microbiota was XYS > JP > SG. Both XYS and its efficacy groups significantly ameliorated gut microbiota disturbed, especially significant modulation of Peptostreptococcaceae. XYS significantly regulated nine kidney metabolites, while SG and JP regulated four and five differential metabolites, respectively, indicating that the two efficacy groups synergistically exhibited anti-depression effects, consequently contributing to the overall anti-depression effects of XYS. CONCLUSION The current findings not only innovatively demonstrate the anti-depression effects and compatibility of XYS from the perspective of "gut-liver-kidney" axis, comprehensively using "Efficacy Group" strategy, macro behavioristics, metabolome and microbiome, and also provide a new perspective, strategy, and methodology for studying complex diseases and the compatibility of TCMs.

Abstract
Importance Two recent meta-analyses reported a high prevalence of both anxiety and depression in patients with alopecia areata (AA), as well as a positive association of AA with anxiety and depression, without distinguishing between disorders and symptoms. Yet, depression and anxiety can manifest either as symptoms identified in questionnaires or as specific diagnoses defined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) or International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision criteria. Objective To perform a large meta-analysis separating the prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders from that of depressive and anxiety symptoms in patients with AA. Data Sources PubMed, ScienceDirect, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched from inception through August 1, 2020. Study Selection Studies that contained data on the prevalence of depressive or anxiety disorders or symptoms were included. Data Extraction and Synthesis The Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) reporting guidelines were used. Pooled prevalence was calculated with a random effects model meta-analysis that took into account between- and within-study variability. Meta-regressions were used to study the association between variations in prevalence and study characteristics. Main Outcomes and Measures The prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders and symptoms in patients with AA. Results Thirty-seven articles (29 on depression and 26 on anxiety) that met the inclusion criteria were identified. By distinguishing between disorders and symptoms, the prevalence of both depressive disorders (9%) and unspecified anxiety disorders (13%) in patients with AA was shown to be greater than that in the general population. The prevalence and odds ratio (OR) of depressive disorders (prevalence, 9%; OR, 1.38) and anxiety disorders of which each category had been specifically studied (prevalence, 7%-17%; OR, 1.51-1.69) were markedly lower than that of depressive symptoms (prevalence, 37%; OR, 2.70) and anxiety symptoms (prevalence, 34%; OR, 3.07). Meta-regressions showed that variations in prevalence were mainly associated with methodological differences between studies. Conclusions and Relevance In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the separate analyses showed that 7% to 17% of patients with AA had depressive or anxiety disorders that require psychiatric care, including specific medication. Additionally, more than one-third of patients had symptoms that are warning signs and that need monitoring because they can develop into disorders.

Abstract
Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common mental disorder that affects individuals' behavior, mood, and physical health, and its prevalence has increased during the lockdowns implemented to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need to update the treatment recommendations for mental disorders during such crises. Conventional interventions to treat depression include long-term pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Electroencephalogram-neurofeedback (EEG-NF) training has been suggested as a non-invasive option to treat depression with minimal side effects. In this systematic review, we summarize the recent literature on EEG-NF training for treating depression. The 12 studies included in our final sample reported that despite several issues related to EEG-NF practices, patients with depression showed significant cognitive, clinical, and neural improvements following EEG-NF training. Given its low cost and the low risk of side effects due to its non-invasive nature, we suggest that EEG-NF is worth exploring as an augmented tool for patients who already receive standard medications but remain symptomatic, and that EEG-NF training may be an effective intervention tool that can be utilized as a supplementary treatment for depression. We conclude by providing some suggestions related to experimental designs and standards to improve current EEG-NF training practices for treating depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device as an adjunct diagnostic tool for bipolar and unipolar disorders while performing cognitive tasks. METHODS 150 participants were divided into three groups including bipolar, unipolar disorder, and healthy controls (50:50:50), matched by age, gender, and family history of mood disorder. Hemodynamics in the frontal cortex were monitored by fNIRS during the Stroop Color-Word Test and Verbal Fluency Test. The GLM compared the differences in oxy-hemoglobin levels between the two groups. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) graph was generated for each neuroanatomical area. RESULTS For people with BD group, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the left orbitofrontal cortex was maximal during the VFT [AUC = 0.727, 95%CI = 0.617-0.824]. The Youden's index reached a peak (0.40) at the optimal cut-point value (HbO2 cutoff <0.180 μmol/ml for BD) in which the sensitivity was 82 %; specificity was 58 %; PPV was 0.66; NPV was 0.76 and correct classification rate was 70 %. Regarding the UD group, during VFT, the highest value AUC [AUC = 0.822, 95%CI = 0.740-0.903] was recorded in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex with the optimal cut-off value (HbO2cutoff ≥0.163 μmol/ml for healthy controls; <0.163 for unipolar disorder), the sensitivity was 72 %; specificity was 82 %; PPV was 0.80; NPV was 0.75, correct classification rate was 77 %, and the Youden's index was 0.54. CONCLUSION Assessing hemodynamics during VFT using portable fNIRS offers the potential as an adjunct diagnostic tool for mood disorders in low-resource environments.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a nutrient potentially beneficial in the treatment of depression. The study aimed to carry out a systematic review of the studies assessing the influence of vitamin D supplementation on depression within Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). The systematic review was prepared on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42020155779). The peer-reviewed studies available within PubMed or Web of Science databases until September 2021 were taken into account. The number of screened records was 8514, and 8 records were included. Two independent researchers conducted screening, including, reporting, and risk of bias assessment using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. The included studies presented a population of patients with major depressive disorders or general depression, as well as bipolar depression or postpartum depression. The majority of included studies were conducted for 8 weeks or 12 weeks, while one study was conducted for 6 months. Within the large number of included studies, a daily dose of 1500 IU, 1600 IU, or 2800 IU was applied, while within some studies, a vitamin D dose of 50,000 IU was applied weekly or biweekly. Among applied psychological measures of depression, there were various tools. In spite of the fact that the majority of included studies (five studies) supported the positive effect of vitamin D supplementation for the psychological measure of depression, for three studies the positive influence was not supported. A medium risk of bias was indicated for six studies, while a high risk of bias was defined for only two studies, due to deviations from the intended interventions and in measurement of the outcome, as well as for one study, also arising from the randomization process and due to missing outcome data. Based on conducted assessment, it should be emphasized that there are only four studies supporting the positive influence of vitamin D supplementation for the psychological measure of depression of the medium risk of bias, while two studies of a medium risk of bias did not support it. Taking this into account, the conducted systematic review is not a strong confirmation of the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy has been used for more than two decades to treat drug resistant epilepsy and depression and most recently received FDA approval for stroke rehabilitation. Expanding indications will renew the interest in the technique and increase the number of surgeons to be trained. The aim of this study was to survey surgeons with substantial expertise on optimal teaching and training approaches. METHODS Anonymous forms comprising 16 questions were sent by e-mail to surgeons with substantial expertise. Statistical analyses were used to compare the answers of the most experienced surgeons (>5 years) with the less experienced ones (<5 years). RESULTS Fully-completed forms were collected from 57 experts from 20 countries. The placement of the helical coils was deemed to be the most difficult step by 36 (63.2%) experts, and the use of optical magnification during this step was deemed necessary by 39 (68.4%) experts. Vocal cord palsy should be largely avoidable with proper surgical technique according to 44 (77.2%) experts. The teaching tool considered the most useful was mentoring (38, 66.7%). The future of VNS surgery teaching was deemed to be in anatomical workshops (29, 50.9%) and surgical simulation (26, 45.6%). Overall, answers did not vary significantly according to experience. CONCLUSIONS VNS surgery should be mastered by actively participating in dedicated practical training courses and by individual mentoring during actual surgery, which is still the best way to learn. This study highlights the need for a formal training course and possible specific accreditation.

Abstract
Paeoniflorin (PF) has been widely used for the treatment of depression in mice models, some Chinese herbal compound containing PF on treating depression, such as Xiaoyao San, Chaihu-Shugan-San, Danggui Shaoyao San etc. Many experiments are also verifying whether PF in these powders can be used as an effective component in the treatment of depression. Therefore, in this review the antidepressant effect of PF and its mechanism of action are outlined with particular focus on the following aspects: increasing the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters, inhibiting the HPA axis, promoting neuroprotection, enhancing neurogenesis in the hippocampus, and elevating levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This review may be helpful for the application of PF in the treatment of depression.

Abstract
AIMS Our study aims to explore how miRNAs can elucidate the molecular mechanisms of major depressive disorder (MDD) by comparing the miRNA levels in the blood serum of patients with depression and healthy individuals. It also explores the potential of miRNAs to differentiate between depressed patients and healthy controls. METHODS 60 healthy controls (n = 45 females) were matched to 60 depressed patients (n = 10 unmedicated) for age (±7), sex, ethnicity, and years of education. Depression severity was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and venous blood was collected using PAXgene Blood RNA tubes for miRNA profiling. To further identify the depression-related biological pathways that are influenced by differentially expressed miRNAs, networks were constructed using QIAGEN Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were also conducted to examine the discriminative ability of miRNAs to distinguish between depressed and healthy individuals. RESULTS Six miRNAs (miR-542-3p, miR-181b-3p, miR-190a-5p, miR-33a-3p, miR-3690 and miR-6895-3p) showed to be considerably down-regulated in unmedicated depressed patients relative to healthy controls. miR-542-3p, in particular, also has experimentally verified mRNA targets that are predicted to be associated with MDD. ROC analyses found that a panel combining miR-542-3p, miR-181b-3p and miR-3690 produced an area under the curve value of 0.67 in distinguishing between depressed and healthy individuals. CONCLUSIONS miRNAs - most notably, miR-542-3p, miR-181b-3p and miR-3690 - may be biomarkers with targets that are implicated in the pathophysiology of depression. They could also be used to distinguish between depressed and healthy individuals with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract
This research aimed to conduct an initial investigation into the relationships between the "misinformation effect" and trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Study 1 was a pilot study developing an online misinformation paradigm that could assess the influence of emotion and arousal on memory distortions. Participants (n = 162, Mage = 39.90; SD = 10.90) were recruited through TurkPrime. In Study 2 community members (n = 116, Mage = 28.96; SD = 10.33) completed this misinformation paradigm and measures of trauma exposure, PTSD, and depression. Study 1 found memory for central details was better for high-arousal than low-arousal and neutral-arousal images. Peripheral memory appeared worse for negative and neutral images than positive images. Study 2 found that, when controlling for age and gender, PTSD symptoms significantly predicted proportion of correct responses on control items. However, there was no evidence to indicate that trauma exposure, PTSD symptoms nor depression symptoms, were associated with proportion of correct responses on misled items. Valence and arousal did not influence these associations. These findings have important implications in clinical and legal contexts where individuals with a history of trauma, or who are experiencing symptoms of PTSD or depression, are often required to recall emotionally-laden events. There is a surprising dearth of research into the misinformation effect in clinical populations and further research is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to determine the trajectories of depressive symptoms in patients with SLE and to identify baseline characteristics that are associated with a patient's trajectory of depression. METHODS Data from the Lupus Outcomes Study at the University of California, San Francisco were analysed. Depressive symptomatology was assessed in years two through seven using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), with higher scores representing more severe depressive symptoms. Group-based trajectory modelling was used to determine latent classes of CES-D scores over time. Ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed to identify baseline characteristics associated with worse classes of depressive symptoms. RESULTS CES-D scores for 763 individuals with SLE over 6 years were mapped into four distinct classes. Class 1 (36%) and class 2 (32%) comprised the largest proportion of the cohort and were defined by the lowest and low CES-D scores (no depression), respectively. Class 3 (22%) and class 4 (10%) had high and the highest scores (depression), respectively. Greater age [odds ratio (OR): 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96, 0.99] and higher education level (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.70, 0.89) at baseline were associated with lower odds of membership in worse classes of depressive symptoms. Conversely, lower income (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.92), worse SF-36 physical functioning scores (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.13) and worse SF-36 bodily pain scores (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.55, 1.61) were positively associated with membership in worse classes of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Four classes of depressive symptoms were identified in patients with SLE. Understanding the trajectories of depressive symptoms and the associated risk factors can aid in the management of these symptoms in individuals living with SLE.

Abstract
Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinical syndrome characterized by acute or subacute onset of neurological symptoms (e.g., headache, seizure, confusion, vomiting, and diminished eyesight) and impaired endothelial barrier function of the cerebral circulation that leads to bilateral subcortical vasogenic edema, while exhibiting a "reversible" feature in most cases. Clinically, various predisposing or precipitating conditions have been identified, such as hypertension, autoimmune diseases, renal dysfunction/failure, preeclampsia/eclampsia, post-transplantation conditions, and certain therapeutic agents. Among several putative mechanisms, the immune activation hypothesis prevails, as up to 50% of patients with PRES harbor abnormalities related to autoimmunity, such as concurrent systemic lupus erythematosus. In this Review, we summarize the clinical and laboratory evidence that places PRES in the context of autoimmunity.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people are using social media more than usual routine because they rely on online sources to seek health information for themselves and their loved ones. The spread of inaccurate and misleading information via social media has a number of detrimental psychological effects on members of society. The aim of this systematic review was to describe the impact of social media on the mental health of the general population. An extensive systematic search was done till the last month of 2021 for collecting the evidence using the PRISMA technique. The search was mainly focused on the article leading with keywords and search engines used during the course of the study were Pubmed, Semantic Scholar, Mendeley, and Science direct. Articles for this study were selected based on the predetermined eligibility criteria and performed quality assessment by using the NHLBI quality assessment tool. Most of the studies included in this review are found fair (score between 9 and 12) quality. Out of 866 publications, 533 articles were included in the initial screening, after duplication removal 46 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility and 14 studies were selected for systematic review. In most of the studies, maximum participants used social media as a primary source of information. Relatively high rates of symptoms of depression (14.14% to 48.3%), anxiety (7.4% to 47.82%), and prevalence of stress increased to 37.67% are reported after exposure to social media for coverage of COVID-19 news in the general population. Risk factors of psychological distress are associated with female gender, younger age group, marital status, staying alone, and duration of exposure to mass media. Increased exposure to COVID-19 information through mass/social media is associated with highly significant levels of psychological health issues; mitigating the hazardous effect of social media exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic on the psychological health of the general population is an international public health priority.

Abstract
The study was carried out one year after the establishment of the pandemic state in the European Union (EU), the situation at the end of the next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. The survey was conducted on a representative sample of Polish people using Computer Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI), considering several demographic categories, such as sex, age, place of residence, education, and monthly income. The survey's main objective was to find out whether the respondents feel fear related to pandemics and living in a pandemic, and if so, what the psychological and physiological symptoms of this fear are. Half of the respondents (50.2%) declared that they felt fear about what their life would look like after the pandemic, and every tenth person (10.1%) marked the highest level of fear on the scale. The respondents felt the psychological symptoms of the pandemic much more often than they felt the physical ones. The most common psychological symptoms were fear of the future (38.5% of them gave "often" and "very often" responses, together), despondency (29.2% of them gave "often" and "very often" responses), and mental tension (28.9% of them gave "often" and "very often" responses). A detailed analysis of data from representative studies showed that the responses in a pandemic are strongly determined by demographic categories, mainly sex and age, and they differ depending on the social group to which a person belongs.
