The relative impact of toxic heavy metals (THMs) (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)(VI), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)) on the total environment: an overview

Solidification/stabilization of soil heavy metals by alkaline industrial wastes: A critical review

Solidification/stabilization technology is one of the most desirable technologies for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils due to its convenience and effectiveness. The annual production of alkaline industrial wastes in China is in the hundreds of millions of tons. Alkaline industrial wastes have the potential to replace conventional stabilizers because of their cost effectiveness and performance in stabilizing heavy metals in soils. This paper systematically summarizes the use of four alkaline industrial wastes (soda residue, steel slag, carbide slag, and red mud) for the solidification/stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soils and provides a comprehensive analysis of the three mechanisms of action (hydration, precipitation, and adsorption) and factors that influence the process. In addition, the environmental risks associated with the use of alkaline industrial wastes are highlighted. We found that soda residues, steel slag and carbide slag are appropriate for solidification/stabilization of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu, while red mud is a potential passivation agent for the stabilization of As in soils. However, implementation of remediation methods using alkaline industrial wastes has been limited because the long-term effectiveness, synergistic effects, and usage in soils containing multiple heavy metals have not been thoroughly studied. This review provides the latest knowledge on the mechanisms, risks, and challenges of using alkaline industrial wastes for solidification/stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soils.

Arsenic and cadmium bioavailability to rice (Oryza sativa L.) plant in paddy soil: Influence of sulfate application

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) accumulate easily in rice grains that pose a non-negligible threat to human health worldwide. Sulfur fertilizer has been shown to affect the mobilization of As and Cd in paddy soil, but the effect of co-contamination by As and Cd has not been explored. This study selected three soils co-contaminated with As and Cd from Shangyu (SY), Tongling (TL) and Ma'anshan (MA). Incubation experiments and pot experiments were carried out to explore the effect of sulfate supply (100 mg kg^-1) on the bioavailability of As and Cd in soil and the rice growth. The results showed that the exogenous sulfate decreased As concentrations in porewater of SY and TL by 51.1% and 29.2% through forming arsenic-sulfide minerals. The exchangeable Cd in soil also declined by 25.6% and 18.6% and transformed into Fe and Mn oxides-bound Cd. The relative abundance of Desulfotomaculum, Desulfurispora and dsr gene increased remarkably indicated that sulfate addition stimulated the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. In MA soil, sulfate addition immobilized Cd but had little effect on As solubility, which was speculated to be related to the high sulfate background of the soil. Further pot experiments showed that sulfate application significantly increased rice tillers, biomass, chlorophyll content in shoots, and decreased electrolyte leakage in root. Finally, sulfate significantly reduced As and Cd in SY rice shoots by 60.2% and 40.8%, respectively, while As decreased by 39.6% in TL rice shoots and Cd decreased by 23.0% in MA rice shoots. These results indicate that the application of sulfate can reduce the bioavailability of As and Cd in the soil-rice system and promote rice growth, and it is possible to reduce the accumulation of As and Cd in rice plants simultaneously.

Quantitative estimation of essential/toxic elemental levels in the serum of esophagus cancer patients in relation to controls

Esophageal cancer is a very deadly disease ranking 8th most common cancer in terms of incidence and the 6th highest in terms of mortality both in the USA and around the world. A growing body of evidence indicated that changes in the concentrations of essential and toxic elements may affect/increase esophagus carcinoma risk. The aim of this study was to measure serum levels of essential and toxic (Fe, Na, Ca, K, Zn, Mg, Co, Se, Cu, Ni, Mn, Sr, Pb, Li, Sb, Cr, Ag, Cd, As, and Hg) elements in patients with esophagus carcinoma and controls. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to determine serum concentrations of essential and toxic elements by using nitric acid/perchloric acid-based wet digestion method. Mean levels of Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, As, and Ag were exhibited to be significantly higher and mean Se, Co, Zn, Ca, Fe, Hg, Li, and Mg were noted lower in the serum of cancer patients than controls. The correlation coefficients among the elements in the cancerous patients revealed significantly dissimilar communal relationships than the controls. Furthermore, multivariate methods demonstrated considerably different apportionment between the elements in the cancerous patients and the controls. Significant inequalities in the elemental concentrations were also observed for esophagus cancer types (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and stages (I, II, III, and IV) between the patients. Majority of the elements exposed perceptible disparities in their levels based on smoking habits, dietary habits, habitat, and gender of the esophagus cancer patients and controls. Multivariate analysis of the essential and toxic elemental data explained significantly divergent apportionment in the serum of esophagus cancer patients when compared to controls.

Exposure at the indoor water-air interface: Fill water constituents and the consequent air emissions from ultrasonic humidifiers: A systematic review

This systematic review investigates the emissions from ultrasonic humidifiers (e.g., cool mist humidifiers) within indoor air environments, namely soluble and insoluble metals and minerals as well as microorganisms and one organic chemical biocide. Relationships between ultrasonic humidifier fill water quality and the emissions in indoor air are studied, and associated potential adverse health outcomes are discussed. Literature from January 1, 1980, to February 1, 2022, was searched from online databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus to produce 27 articles. The results revealed clear positive proportional relationships of the concentration of microorganisms and soluble metals/minerals between fill water qualities and emitted airborne particles, for both microbial (n = 9) and inorganic (n = 15) constituents. When evaluating emissions and the consequent health outcomes, ventilation rates of specific exposure scenarios affect the concentrations of emitted particles. Thus, well-ventilated rooms may alleviate inhalation risks when the fill water in ultrasonic humidifiers contains microorganisms and soluble metals/minerals. Case reports (n = 3) possibly due to the inhalation of particles from ultrasonic humidifier include hypersensitivity pneumonitis in adults and a 6-month infant; the young infant exhibited nonreversible mild obstructive ventilator defect. In summary, related literature indicated correlation between fill water quality of ultrasonic humidifier and emitted particles in air quality, and inhalation of the emitted particles may cause undesirable health outcomes of impaired respiratory functions in adults and children.

Mutagenic, Carcinogenic, and Teratogenic Effect of Heavy Metals

Heavy metal (HM)-induced toxicity and its associated complications have become a major issue in the medical world. HMs are not biodegradable, enter into the food chain, and gets accumulated in the living systems. Increased concentrations and accumulation of HMs can cause severely damaging effects and severe complications in living organisms and can even lead to the death of the organism. In Ayurvedic medicine, ingredients of natural origin, including whole plants or certain portions of the plant, animal sources, and minerals, are used for therapeutic purposes as medicine, both alone and in combination. HM such as cadmium, copper, zinc, lead, chromium, nickel, and arsenic cause hazardous effects on animals, human health, and the environment. This review focuses on mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic effects of HM , mechanism, organ toxicity, available remedies in the market, and their side effects. Also, emphasis is given to alternative systems of medicine to treat HM toxicity.

Neuron Protection by EDTA May Explain the Successful Outcomes of Toxic Metal Chelation Therapy in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Many mechanisms have been related to the etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. In this context, the detrimental role of environmental agents has also been highlighted. Studies focused on the role of toxic metals in the pathogenesis of ND demonstrate the efficacy of treatment with the chelating agent calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in eliminating toxic metal burden in all ND patients, improving their symptoms. Lead, cadmium, aluminum, nickel, and mercury were the most important toxic metals detected in these patients. Here, I provide an updated review on the damage to neurons promoted by toxic metals and on the impact of EDTA chelation therapy in ND patients, along with the clinical description of a representative case.

Urinary Pb levels in schoolchildren from the largest coal mining area in Brazil and its associated factors: a cross-sectional study

Candiota region has the largest coal reserve in Brazil, and previous studies have shown moderate-high levels of metals in the environment, including Pb. On the other hand, there are no studies investigating the factors associated with high levels of urinary Pb in children in the region. To investigate this issue, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 92 schoolchildren from 7 cities comprising this coal-mining region. Socioeconomic and demographic information and parental life habits and children's health information were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Diurnal urine samples were collected to quantify Pb levels (µg/g creatinine). Bi- and multivariate Poisson regression with a robust estimator was used to assess factors associated with high levels of Pb. Urinary Pb levels in children in the region vary from not detected to 21.6 µg/g of creatinine. The spatial distribution of urinary Pb levels in children indicated an influence of proximity to mining areas, and this factor was confirmed by Poisson regression analysis (bivariate). Other factors associated with high levels of urinary Pb were non-white mothers, paternal occupational exposure, and low BMI. The findings of this study reveal that the Candiota region is a hotspot for high levels of urinary Pb in children (geometric mean: 3.82 µg/g creatinine) and that, in addition to the proximity to mining areas, factors socioeconomic and health conditions may be associated with these high levels.

Accidental lead in contaminated pipe-borne water and dietary furan intake perturbs rats' hepatorenal function altering oxidative, inflammatory, and apoptotic balance

Inadvertent exposure to furan and Pb is associated with hepatorenal abnormalities in humans and animals. It is perceived that these two chemical species may work in synergy to orchestrate liver and kidney damage. Against this background, we investigated the combined effect of furan and incremental lead (Pb) exposure on hepatorenal dysfunction. Wistar rats (n = 30; 150 g) were treated for 28 days accordingly: Control; FUR (8 mg/kg), PbAc (100 µg/L), FUR + PbAc₁ (8 mg/kg FUR + 1 µg/L PbAc); FUR + PbAc₁ (8 mg/kg FUR + 10 µg/L PbAc), and FUR + PbAc₁ (8 mg/kg FUR + 100 µg/L PbAc). Biomarkers of hepatorenal function, oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, and apoptosis were examined. Furan and incrementally Pb exposure increased the levels of hepatorenal biomarkers and oxidative and pro-inflammatory mediators, including lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and interleukin-1 beta. Increased DNA damage, caspases- 9 and -3, and atypical histoarchitecture of the hepatorenal tissues exemplified furan and Pb treatment-related perturbations. Furthermore, the levels of antioxidants and IL-10 were also suppressed. Furan and Pb dose-dependently exacerbated hepatorenal derangements by altering the redox and inflammatory rheostats, worsened DNA damage, and related apoptotic onset that may potentiate hepatorenal disorders in humans and animals. The findings validate the synergistic effect of furan and Pb in the pathophysiology of kidney and liver disorders.

Enhancement of hexavalent chromium reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in presence of copper nanoparticles via stimulating bacterial extracellular electron transfer and environmental adaptability

The bioreduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) depends highly on bacterial activity, while the release of copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) poses threats to microorganisms in the environment. This work demonstrated that Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was remarkably enhanced by 83.7% under 20 mg/L Cu NPs exposure. Cu NPs improved the electron migration capacity of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 by enhancing bioelectrochemical performance and flavin mononucleotide secretion. Moreover, key genes related to extracellular electron transfer pathways, including direct electron transfer through outer-membrane proteins, flavin-mediated electron transfer, and conductive flagella, were generally upregulated under Cu NPs exposure. In addition, environmental adaptability of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was enhanced under Cu NPs exposure by improving environmental information processing and energy and reducing power production, promoting Cr(VI) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. This work indicated that Cu NPs could enhance Cr(VI) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 through regulating extracellular electron transfer and environmental adaptability.

Plant responses to metals stress: microRNAs in focus

Metal toxicity can largely affect the growth and yield of numerous plant species. Plants have developed specific mechanisms to withstand the varying amounts of metals. One approach involves utilization of microRNAs (miRNAs) that are known for cleaving transcripts or inhibiting translation to mediate post-transcriptional control. Use of transcription factors (TFs) or gene regulation in metal detoxification largely depends on metal-responsive miRNAs. Moreover, systemic signals and physiological processes for plants response to metal toxicities are likewise controlled by miRNAs. Therefore, it is necessary to understand miRNAs and their regulatory networks in relation to metal stress. The miRNA-based approach can be important to produce metal-tolerant plant species. Here, we have reviewed the importance of plant miRNAs and their role in mitigating metal toxicities. The current review also discusses the specific advances that have occurred as a result of the identification and validation of several metal stress-responsive miRNAs.

Contamination characteristics, source identification, and source-specific health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in groundwater of an arid oasis region in Northwest China

Heavy metal(loid)s accumulation in groundwater has posed serious ecological and health concerns worldwide. Source-specific risk apportionment is crucial to prevent and control potential heavy metal(loid)s pollution in groundwater. However, there is very limited comprehensive information on the health risk apportionment for groundwater heavy metal(loid)s in arid regions. Thus, the Zhangye Basin, a typical arid oasis region in Northwest China, was selected to investigate the contamination characteristics, possible pollution sources, and source-specific health risks of groundwater heavy metal(loid)s. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI), the Nemerow index (NI), and the contamination degree (CD) were adopted to assess the pollution level of heavy metal(loid)s; then source-specific health risk was apportioned integrating the absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) with health risk assessment. Noticeable accumulation of Mn, Fe, and As was observed in this region with especially Fe/As in 12.68%/2.11% of the samples revealing significant enrichment. Approximately 3.5% of the groundwater samples caused moderate or higher pollution level based on the HPI. The APCS-MLR model was more physically applicable for the current research than the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Industrial-agricultural activity factor (12.56%) was the major source of non-cancer (infants: 59.15%, children: 64.87%, teens: 64.06%, adults: 64.02%) and cancer risks (infants: 77.36%, children: 77.35%, teens: 77.40%, adults: 77.41%). Industrial-agricultural activities should be given priority to control health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in groundwater. These findings provide fundamental and significant information for mitigating health risks caused by heavy metal(loid)s in groundwater of typical arid oasis regions by controlling priority sources.

Exposure to lead and dietary furan intake aggravates hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis toxicity in chronic experimental rats

Lead (Pb) and furan are toxic agents, and persistent exposure may impair human and animal reproductive function. We therefore explored the effects of Pb and furan on male rat hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal reproductive status, oxidative stress, inflammation, and genomic integrity. We found that co-exposure to Pb and furan reduced the activities of testicular function enzymes, endogenous antioxidant levels, total sulfhydryl group, and glutathione. Sperm abnormality, biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and p53 expression were increased in a dose-dependent manner by treatment with furan and Pb. Typical rat gonad histoarchitecture features were also damaged. Conclusively, co-exposure to Pb and furan induced male reproductive function derangement by decreasing the antioxidant defences in rats, increasing abnormalities in spermatozoa morphology, and reducing reproductive hormone in circulation. These pathophysiological alterations, if persistent, might provide a permissive environment for potentiating reproductive dysfunction and infertility.

Exploration of immune response mechanisms in cadmium and copper co-exposed juvenile golden cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta) based on transcriptome profiling

Sepia esculenta is a popular economic cephalopod with high yield, delicious meat, and rich nutrition. With the rapid development of heavy industry and medical industry, a large amount of waste has been released into the ocean recklessly in recent years, inducing a significant increase in the content of heavy metals, especially cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), in the ocean. This phenomenon significantly affects the growth and development of S. esculenta, causing a serious blow to its artificial breeding. In this study, transcriptome analysis is used to initially explore immune response mechanisms of Cd and Cu co-exposed juvenile S. esculenta. The results show that 1,088 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are identified. And DEGs functional enrichment analysis results suggests that co-exposure may promote inflammatory and innate immune responses in juvenile S. esculenta. Fifteen key genes that might regulate the immunity of S. esculenta are identified using protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and KEGG enrichment analyses, of which the three genes with the highest number of interactions or involve in more KEGG pathways are identified as hub genes that might significantly affect the immune response processes. Comprehensive analysis of PPI network and KEGG signaling pathway is used for the first time to explore co-exposed S. esculenta juvenile immune response processes. Our results preliminarily reveal immune response mechanisms of cephalopods exposed to heavy metals and provide a valuable resource for further understanding of mollusk immunity.

Novel GO/Fe-Mn hybrid for the adsorptive removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution and the spent adsorbent disposability in cement mix: compressive properties and leachability study for circular economy benefits

GO/Fe-Mn hybrids were prepared by a single-pot chemical precipitation method and were characterized using FTIR, XRD, Raman, zeta potential, and FESEM, which confirmed the impregnation of Fe/Mn onto GO sheets. The synthesized hybrids were successively applied in removing the Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution and later utilizing the spent adsorbent to increase the properties of cement. The adsorption capability of the synthesized hybrid was seen in a set of batch studies to find out that about 15 min of contact time was required to remove 99% of the contaminant at a pH of 5 ± 0.2 and a dose of 0.83 g/L. The mechanism of the adsorption process for the synthesized hybrid was well described by Elovich kinetic model with an R² of 0.99 and Langmuir isotherm model, also with an R² of 0.99. The desorption studies conducted using 0.1 M HCl solution showed significant stability of the hybrid with a drop of 12% in the removal efficiency of Pb after up to five adsorption-desorption cycles. This points to an efficient adsorbent having potential for economical use. Later, the spent adsorbent was mixed with cement at ratios of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.5%, and compressive strength tests were performed, which showed an increase in the strength by 7.62%, 16.11%, and 26.82% at 28 days of curing time. The TCLP and SPLP tests performed on the hybrid and cement-spent adsorbent mix showed all the leaching parameters were well within the permissible limits. This development shows the potential for the use of spent adsorbent in a circular economy model.

Pea Albumin Attenuates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis by Regulating NF-κB Signaling and the Intestinal Microbiota in Mice

BACKGROUND

Inflammatory bowel disease remains a global burden with rapidly increasing incidence and prevalence in both industrialized countries and developing countries. In this study, we prepared pea albumin from pea seeds and determined its beneficial effects being anti-inflammatory and on gut microbiota modulation in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-challenged mice.

METHOD

Six-week-old C57BL/6N male mice received an equivalent volume (200 μL) of sterile phosphate balanced solution, 0.375, 0.75, or 1.50 g/kg body weight (BW) of pea albumin that was subjected to 2.0% DSS for 7 days to induce colitis. On day 17 of the experiment, all mice were sacrificed after blood sample collection, and colon tissue and colon contents were collected. BW change curve, colon length, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, mucus staining, immunofluorescence staining of T cells and macrophages, cytokines, pro-inflammatory genes expression, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and signal transducer, and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathways as well as 16S DNA sequence were measured.

RESULTS

Our results show that pea albumin alleviates DSS-induced BW loss, colon length shortening, enhanced MPO activity, cytokines secretion, mucus deficiency, and inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as enhanced pro-inflammatory genes expression. In addition, the overactivation of NF-κB and STAT3 following DSS exposure is attenuated by pea albumin administration. Of particular interest, pea albumin oral administration restored gut microbiota dysbiosis as evidenced by enhanced α-diversity, restored β-diversity, and promoted relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group.

CONCLUSION

Taken together, the data provided herein demonstrated that pea albumin plays a protective role in DSS-induced colitis by reducing inflammatory cell infiltration, pro-inflammatory genes expression and pro-inflammatory cytokines release, inactivation of NF-κB signal, and gut microbiota modulation.

Silicon-Induced Tolerance against Arsenic Toxicity by Activating Physiological, Anatomical and Biochemical Regulation in Phoenix dactylifera (Date Palm)

Arsenic is a toxic metal abundantly present in agricultural, industrial, and pesticide effluents. To overcome arsenic toxicity and ensure safety for plant growth, silicon (Si) can play a significant role in its mitigation. Here, we aim to investigate the influence of silicon on date palm under arsenic toxicity by screening antioxidants accumulation, hormonal modulation, and the expression profile of abiotic stress-related genes. The results showed that arsenic exposure (As: 1.0 mM) significantly retarded growth attributes (shoot length, root length, fresh weight), reduced photosynthetic pigments, and raised reactive species levels. Contrarily, exogenous application of Si (Na₂SiO₃) to date palm roots strongly influenced stress mitigation by limiting the translocation of arsenic into roots and shoots as compared with the arsenic sole application. Furthermore, an enhanced accumulation of polyphenols (48%) and increased antioxidant activities (POD: 50%, PPO: 75%, GSH: 26.1%, CAT: 51%) resulted in a significant decrease in superoxide anion (O₂^•−: 58%) and lipid peroxidation (MDA: 1.7-fold), in silicon-treated plants, compared with control and arsenic-treated plants. The Si application also reduced the endogenous abscisic acid (ABA: 38%) under normal conditions, and salicylic acid (SA: 52%) and jasmonic acid levels (JA: 62%) under stress conditions as compared with control and arsenic. Interestingly, the genes; zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP) and 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED-1) involved in ABA biosynthesis were upregulated by silicon under arsenic stress. Likewise, Si application also upregulated gene expression of plant plasma membrane ATPase (PMMA-4), aluminum-activated malate transporter (ALMT) responsible for maintaining cellular physiology, stomatal conductance, and short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) involved in nutrients translocation. Hence, the study demonstrates the remarkable role of silicon in supporting growth and inducing arsenic tolerance by increasing antioxidant activities and endogenous hormones in date palm. The outcomes of our study can be employed in further studies to better understand arsenic tolerance and decode mechanism.

Effects of melatonin on growth and antioxidant capacity of naked oat (Avena nuda L) seedlings under lead stress

Melatonin (MT) plays an important role in plant response to abiotic stress. In recent years, lead (Pb) pollution has seriously affected the living environment of plants. In this study, we applied two different concentrations of MT to naked oat seedlings under Pb stress to explore the effect of MT on naked oat seedlings under Pb pollution. The results showed that Pb stress seriously inhibited the growth and development of naked oat seedlings, which was alleviated by MT. MT could increase the soluble protein content and decrease the proline content of naked oat seedlings to maintain the osmotic balance of naked oat seedlings. The application of MT could accelerate the removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improve the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), so as to maintain the redox balance in naked oat seedlings. Exogenous melatonin could significantly increase the chlorophyll content of naked oat seedlings under Pb treatment, so as to improve the photosynthesis efficiency of naked oat seedlings. MT could also remarkably up regulate the expression of the genes of LOX, POX and Asmap1, and affect the expression of transcription factors NAC and WRKY1. It might regulate the expression of downstream genes through MAPKs pathways and TFs to improve the Pb tolerance of naked oat seedlings. These results proved that MT could significantly promote the growth and development of naked oats seedlings under Pb stress, which is expected to be applied in agricultural production practice.

Comparative pharmacokinetics and urinary excretion of arsenic and mercury after oral administration of realgar, cinnabar and AnGongNiuHuang Pill to rats

Realgar- and cinnabar-containing AnGongNiuHuang Pill (AGNHP) is widely used for treating encephalopathy syndrome. However, it raises great safety concerns due to the adverse effects reported by arsenic or mercury poisoning. Although AGNHP has been generally recognized, little is known about the metabolism of arsenic and mercury and their resulting potential health risk in vivo. Thus, comparative pharmacokinetics and urinary excretion of arsenic and mercury were conducted in rats after oral administration of realgar, cinnabar and AGNHP, respectively. The contents of arsenic and mercury in rat blood and urine were determined by hydride-generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) after wet digestion. AGNHP significantly reduced the absorption of arsenic in blood and promoted urinary arsenic excretion. Whereas, it increased the blood mercury absorption and reduced urinary mercury excretion. No significant toxicity was observed in the clinical dose range of AGNHP. However, excessive exposure to arsenic and mercury may still pose risks especially by long-term or excessive medication. The results are helpful for the rational clinical applications of realgar- and cinnabar-containing TCMs.

Heavy Metal Ions Detection Using Nanomaterials-Based Aptasensors

Heavy metals ions as metallic pollutants are a growing global issue due to their adverse effects on the aquatic ecosystem, and human health. Unfortunately, conventional detection methods such as atomic absorption spectrometry exhibit a relatively low limit of detection and hold numerous disadvantages, and therefore, the development of an efficient method for in-situ and real-time detection of heavy metal residues is of great importance. The aptamer-based sensors offer distinct advantages over antibodies and emerged as a robust sensing platform against various heavy metals due to their high sensitivity, ease of production, simple operations, excellent specificity, better stability, low immunogenicity, and cost-effectiveness. The nucleic acid aptamers in conjugation with nanomaterials can bind to the metal ions with good specificity/selectivity and can be used for on-site monitoring of metal ion residues. This review aimed to provide background information about nanomaterials-based aptasensor, recent advancements in aptamer conjunction on nanomaterials surface, the role of nanomaterials in improving signal transduction, recent progress of nanomaterials-based aptasening procedures (from 2010 to 2022), and future perspectives toward the practical applications of nanomaterials-based aptasensors against hazardous metal ions for food safety and environmental monitoring.

Level-specific associations of urinary antimony with cognitive function in US older adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014

BACKGROUND

We have looked at antimony (Sb) as a new neurotoxin which causes neuronal apoptosis in animal studies. At the population level, however, there is no direct evidence for a relationship between Sb exposure and cognitive performance.

METHOD

The study comprehensively assessed the correlation between urinary antimony levels and cognitive test scores in 631 creatinine-corrected older persons using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2014.

RESULTS

Using logistic regression, the study looked at the prevalence of cognitive impairment at different levels of urine antimony concentrations and found that, after controlling for covariates, higher doses of urinary antimony were positively associated with cognitive function compared to controls, odds ratio (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were 0.409 (0.185-0.906) and 0.402 (0.186-0.871) respectively. Restricted cubic spline curves showed a non-linear and dose-specific correlation between urinary antimony and cognitive performance, with lower doses associated with better cognitive performance, while higher doses may be associated with cognitive impairment.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data provide evidence for a correlation between Sb and cognitive function at the population level, although the specific mechanisms need to be investigated further.

Immobilization and recycling of contaminated marine sediments in cement-based materials incorporating iron-biochar composites

Sustainable stabilization/solidification (S/S) incorporating biochar for hazardous wastes has attracted increasing attention. In this study, contaminated marine sediments were remediated and recycled as useful materials via cement-based S/S process incorporating iron-biochar composites derived from incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and peanut shell. Results showed that incorporation of 20% iron-biochar composites notably increased the Cr immobilization (52.8% vs 92.1-99.7%), while attained similar As (70%) and Cu (95%) immobilization efficiencies compared to the control group (CK) prepared with plain cement as the binder based on the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure. S/S products with the addition of ISSA derived iron-biochar composite had a mechanical strength of 5.0 MPa, which was significantly higher than its counterparts derived from pure iron oxide or pristine biochar (< 4.5 MPa). Microstructural and spectroscopic characterizations and chemical leaching experiments demonstrated that reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) followed by formation of Cr-Fe precipitates by zero valent iron in iron-biochar composites contributed to the enhanced immobilization efficacy of Cr(VI) compared to CK. Overall, these results demonstrated the potential of applying ISSA and peanut shell derived iron-biochar composites as additives in the cement-based S/S treatment for contaminated sediments.

Tolerance of phyllospheric Wickerhamomyces anomalus to BDE-3 and heavy metals

Few research have focused on the potential microorganism and gene resources for plant resistance to polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and heavy metal (HM) co-contamination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of phyllospheric Wickerhamomyces anomalus bioremediation ability on PBDE and HM co-contamination. The results showed that the toleration capability of W. anomalus to cadmium (Cd2+) was higher than that to chromium (Cr) or 4-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE-3) contamination. The threshold levels of W. anomalus tolerance to BDE-3, Cd2+, and Cr were 30 mg/L, 500 mg/L, 30 mg/L, respectively. The use of the higher concentration of BDE-3 (30 mg/L) as a carbon source may improve tolerance to Cd2+ and Cr (10 mg/L Cd2+ and 10 mg/L Cr). Overexpression of Wapdr15 gene of ABCG subfamily from W. anomalus improved the tolerance to BDE-3 (10 mg/mL) and Cd2+ (0.5 mg/mL) significantly in transgenic tobacco lines. The synergism effect of BDE-3 and Cd2+ stress existed similarly in W. anomalus and transgenic lines. The findings suggest that W. anomalus should be taken into account for providing an efficient method in improving crops' tolerance during PBDE and HM co-contamination in soil.

Effects of biochar underwent different aging processes on soil properties and Cd passivation

This study aims to determine the efficacy of biochar underwent different aging process including freeze-thaw cycling aging (FB), acidified aging (AB), and microbial aging (MB) on soil physicochemical properties and Cd passivation. The Cd-contaminated soil (3 mg·kg^-1) amended with the three kinds of aging biochar (at 4% w:w) were subjected to 56-day incubation. The application of FB and MB in soil increased the soil pH (0.82-1.04, 0.27-9.36), CEC (1.06-2.53 cmol·kg^-1, 1.66-2.59 cmol·kg^-1), and organic matter content (2.28-4.67 g·kg^-1, 3.70-5.48 g·kg^-1). FB performed best in stabilizing Cd (17.06-23.65%). On the contrary, AB decreased the soil pH and CEC by 0.82-1.04 and 1.32-2.40 cmol·kg^-1 and activated Cd by 11.6-19.24%. In conclusion, the efficacy of biochar on soil remediation and Cd passivation varied with aging method and cycle, and freeze-thaw treatment is an effective approach to improve the performance of biochar.

Heavy Metal Concentrations in Malaysian Adults' Hair and Associated Variables in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia

The presence of heavy metals in human hair is being tracked to predict health risk, forensics, and environmental monitoring. Heavy metals are typically non-biodegradable and have a lengthy half-life, allowing them to linger in humans and the environment for many years. Heavy metal exposure in hair has been attributed to multiple sources from the environment and food intake. In this study, copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) levels were measured in the scalp hair of 50 individuals in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia. In conjunction with sampling, subjects' age, gender, lifestyle, diet, and working environment were also obtained through the questionnaire. The Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) method was used to extract all the metals in the hair samples. The mean concentrations of heavy metals were found to be in the following order (unit of mg/kg): Cr > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cu. Manganese was detected below the limit of quantitation among the elements (< LOQ). All elements except Mn were higher and comparable to the previous studies' international limit values. Cadmium prevalence was substantially associated with age, smoking habit, dyed hair, and working environment in Pearson's correlation analysis (p ≤ 0.05). Zinc was also found to be related to the working environment. Some elements were observed to be statistically related between heavy metals, Cd/Zn, Cd/Ni, Cr/Ni, and Pb/Ni, whereas smoking habit/dyed hair and dyed hair/working environment were the associated factors for metal distribution that were statistically correlated (p ≤ 0.05). To recapitulate, this study found that the distribution of heavy metals in hair was influenced by associated factors and between heavy metals. It has been indicated that heavy metal exposure to humans is influenced by factors such as geographical location, lifestyle, and working environment.

Water toxicants: a comprehension on their health concerns, detection, and remediation

Water is an essential moiety for the human use since a long time. Availability of good-quality water is very essential, as it is used in almost all the industrial, agricultural, and household activities. However, several factors such as increased urbanization and industrialization, extensive use of chemicals, natural weathering of rocks, and human ignorance led to incorporation of enormous toxicants into the water. The water toxicants are broadly classified as inorganic, organic, and radiological toxicants. Inorganic toxicants include heavy metals (As, Cr, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb) and metalloids, ammonia, nitrate, and fluoride. Uranium is included in radiological toxicants which also causes chemical toxicity. Organic pollutants include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, phenolic compounds, phthalate esters, pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products, perchlorates, and flame retardants. These toxicants are harmful for the ecosystem as well as for the human beings causing different types of health complications like lung cancer, nasal cancer, gingivitis, severe vomiting and abdominal pain, hormonal imbalance, skeletal damage, neurotoxicity like Alzheimer and Parkinson disease, renal toxicity, nephrotoxicity, etc. The USEPA and WHO specified the permissible concentration of these pollutants in the drinking water. Determination techniques having high sensitivity, low cost, rapid onsite, and real-time detection of traces of water pollutants are discussed. This review also covers in depth about the remediation techniques, for the control of water toxicants, such as chelation of the heavy metals, intoxication of pollutants using various plants, adsorption of toxicants using different sorbent medias, and photocatalytic breakdown of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Metal–Metal Correlation of Biodegraded Crude Oil and Associated Economic Crops from the Eastern Dahomey Basin, Nigeria

The presence of heavy metals in plants from oil sand deposits may reflect mineralization resulting from petroleum biodegradation. Petroleum composition and heavy metal analyses were performed using thermal desorption gas chromatography and atomic absorption spectrophotometry on oil sand and plant root samples from the same localities in the Dahomey Basin. The results from the oil sand showed mainly heavy-end hydrocarbon components, humps of unresolved complex mixtures (UCM), absences of C6-C12 hydrocarbon chains, pristane, and phytane, indicating severe biodegradation. In addition, they showed varying concentrations of vanadium (2.699–7.708 ppm), nickel (4.005–11.716 ppm), chromium (1.686–5.733 ppm), cobalt (0.953–3.223 ppm), lead (0.649–0.978 ppm), and cadmium (0.188–0.461 ppm). Furthermore, these heavy metals were present in Citrus, Theobroma Cacao, Elaeis guineensis, and Cola. The chromium, nickel, vanadium, lead, cobalt, and cadmium concentrations in the Citrus were 7.475, 4.981, 0.551, 0.001, 0.806, and 0.177 ppm, respectively. For the Theobroma Cacao, the concentrations of chromium, nickel, vanadium, lead, cobalt, and cadmium were 7.095, 16.697, 2.151, 0.023, 3.942, and 0.254 ppm. Elaeis guineensis also showed the presence of chromium (32.685 ppm), nickel (32.423 ppm), vanadium (11.983 ppm), lead (0.190 ppm), cobalt (4.425 ppm), and cadmium (0.262 ppm). The amounts of chromium, nickel, vanadium, lead, cobalt, and cadmium in the Cola were 9.687, 9.157, 0.779, 0.037, 0.695, and 0.023 ppm. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) safe and permissible limits for Cd (0.003 ppm), Cr (0.1 ppm), Ni (0.05 ppm), and Pb (0.1 ppm) in agricultural soils were all exceeded in the oil sand. The presence of these metals in the oil sands and their uptake by the plants could potentially be toxic, resulting in high mortality. The metal–metal correlation of the plant’s rootsto the oil sand indicates the nonanthropogenic origin of the heavy metals, which leads to the conclusion that their source is related to the hydrocarbon accumulation in the Afowo sand.

Microorganisms in Plant Growth and Development: Roles in Abiotic Stress Tolerance and Secondary Metabolites Secretion

Crops aimed at feeding an exponentially growing population are often exposed to a variety of harsh environmental factors. Although plants have evolved ways of adjusting their metabolism and some have also been engineered to tolerate stressful environments, there is still a shortage of food supply. An alternative approach is to explore the possibility of using rhizosphere microorganisms in the mitigation of abiotic stress and hopefully improve food production. Several studies have shown that rhizobacteria and mycorrhizae organisms can help improve stress tolerance by enhancing plant growth; stimulating the production of phytohormones, siderophores, and solubilizing phosphates; lowering ethylene levels; and upregulating the expression of dehydration response and antioxidant genes. This article shows the secretion of secondary metabolites as an additional mechanism employed by microorganisms against abiotic stress. The understanding of these mechanisms will help improve the efficacy of plant-growth-promoting microorganisms.

Genetically modified metallothionein/cellulose composite material as an efficient and environmentally friendly biosorbent for Cd2+ removal

Metallothioneins (MTs) are a class of cysteine-rich metal-binding proteins. Cadmium (Cd) is one of the toxic heavy metal pollutants. In our previous research, the full-length cDNA of MT (Cd specificity) from freshwater crab (Sinopotamon henanense) (ShMT) was cloned and genetically modified to ShMT3 by site-directed mutagenesis to enhance the tolerance for Cd²⁺, however, it was limited in actual Cd²⁺ adsorption due to instability. Here, ShMT3-CBM, a novel recombinant fusion protein, was prepared. CBM is a carbohydrate binding module that can specifically bind cellulose while ShMT3 can effectively chelate Cd²⁺. The biosorbent Cellulose1-ShMT3-CBM was obtained by screening suitable cellulose materials. The selective adsorption experiments showed that Cellulose1-ShMT3-CBM had a preference for Cd²⁺. In low-concentration Cd²⁺ solutions, the removal efficiency was >99 %, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 15 min. The saturated adsorption capacity of Cellulose1-ShMT3-CBM for Cd²⁺ is 180.35 ± 4.67 mg/g (Dry Weight). Regeneration experiments showed that adsorption efficiency was maintained after six cycles. The MTT experiment showed that Cellulose1-ShMT3-CBM had low cytotoxicity. Meanwhile, Cellulose1-ShMT3-CBM can preferentially remove Cd²⁺ in actual water samples and boiler sewage. In this study, an environmentally friendly biosorbent which can adsorb Cd²⁺ efficiently and quickly was prepared for actual water treatment.

The effect of urinary essential and non-essential elements on serum albumin: Evidence from a community-based study of the elderly in Beijing

Background & aims

Few epidemiological studies have investigated the relationships of urinary essential and non-essential elements with serum albumin, an indicator of nutritional status, especially for the elderly in China.

Methods

A community-based study among elderly participants (n = 275) was conducted in Beijing from November to December 2016. We measured 15 urinary elements concentrations and serum albumin levels. Three statistical methods including the generalized linear model (GLM), quantile g-computation model (qgcomp) and bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were adapted.

Results

In GLM analysis, we observed decreased serum albumin levels associated with elevated urinary concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, barium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, selenium, strontium, and zinc. Compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertile of cadmium and cesium was also negatively associated with serum albumin. Urinary selenium concentration had the most significant negative contribution (30.05%) in the qgcomp analysis. The negative correlations of element mixtures with serum albumin were also observed in BKMR analysis.

Conclusions

Our findings suggested the negative associations of essential and non-essential elements with serum albumin among the elderly. Large-scare cohort studies among the general population are required to validate our findings and elucidate the relevant underlying mechanisms.

Role of microbes in bioaccumulation of heavy metals in municipal solid waste: Impacts on plant and human being

The presence of heavy metals in municipal solid waste (MSW) is considered as prevalent global pollutants that cause serious risks to the environment and living organisms. Due to industrial and anthropogenic activities, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environmental matrices is increasing alarmingly. MSW causes several adverse environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, river plastic accumulation, and other environmental pollution. Indigenous microorganisms (Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Bacillus, Nitrosomonas, etc.) with the help of new pathways and metabolic channels can offer the potential approaches for the treatment of pollutants. Microorganisms, that exhibit the ability of bioaccumulation and sequestration of metal ions in their intracellular spaces, can be utilized further for the cellular processes like enzyme signaling, catalysis, stabilizing charges on biomolecules, etc. Microbiological techniques for the treatment and remediation of heavy metals provide a new prospects for MSW management. This review provides the key insights on profiling of heavy metals in MSW, tolerance of microorganisms, and application of indigenous microorganisms in bioremediation. The literatures revealed that indigenous microbes can be exploited as potential agents for bioremediation.

Microbial Remediation: A Promising Tool for Reclamation of Contaminated Sites with Special Emphasis on Heavy Metal and Pesticide Pollution: A Review

Heavy metal and pesticide pollution have become an inevitable part of the modern industrialized environment that find their way into all ecosystems. Because of their persistent nature, recalcitrance, high toxicity and biological enrichment, metal and pesticide pollution has threatened the stability of the environment as well as the health of living beings. Due to the environmental persistence of heavy metals and pesticides, they get accumulated in the environs and consequently lead to food chain contamination. Therefore, remediation of heavy metals and pesticide contaminations needs to be addressed as a high priority. Various physico-chemical approaches have been employed for this purpose, but they have significant drawbacks such as high expenses, high labor, alteration in soil properties, disruption of native soil microflora and generation of toxic by-products. Researchers worldwide are focusing on bioremediation strategies to overcome this multifaceted problem, i.e., the removal, immobilization and detoxification of pesticides and heavy metals, in the most efficient and cost-effective ways. For a period of millions of evolutionary years, microorganisms have become resistant to intoxicants and have developed the capability to remediate heavy metal ions and pesticides, and as a result, they have helped in the restoration of the natural state of degraded environs with long term environmental benefits. Keeping in view the environmental and health concerns imposed by heavy metals and pesticides in our society, we aimed to present a generalized picture of the bioremediation capacity of microorganisms. We explore the use of bacteria, fungi, algae and genetically engineered microbes for the remediation of both metals and pesticides. This review summarizes the major detoxification pathways and bioremediation technologies; in addition to that, a brief account is given of molecular approaches such as systemic biology, gene editing and omics that have enhanced the bioremediation process and widened its microbiological techniques toward the remediation of heavy metals and pesticides.

Benchmark dose approach in investigating the relationship between blood metal levels and reproductive hormones: Data set from human study

The main objective of this research was to conduct a dose-response modeling between the internal dose of measured blood Cd, As, Hg, Ni, and Cr and hormonal response of serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The study included 207 male participants from subjects of 5 different cohorts (patients with prostate, testicular, and pancreatic cancer, patients suffering from various thyroid and metabolic disorders, as well as healthy volunteers), enrolled from January 2019 to May 2021 at the Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade, Serbia. Benchmark dose-response modeling analysis was performed with the PROAST software version 70.1, showing the hormone levels as quantal data. The averaging technique was applied to compute the Benchmark dose (BMD) interval (BMDI), with benchmark response set at 10%. Dose-response relationships between metal/metalloid blood concentration and serum hormone levels were confirmed for all the investigated metals/metalloid and hormones. The narrowest BMDI was found for Cd-testosterone and Hg-LH pairs, indicative of high confidence in these estimates. Although further research is needed, the observed findings demonstrate that the BMD approach may prove to be significant in the dose-response modeling of human data.

Effects of Pb-, Cd-resistant bacterium Pantoea sp. on growth, heavy metal uptake and bacterial communities in oligotrophic growth substrates of Lolium multiflorum Lam

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can accelerate phytoremediation, especially in those fertilized soils. However, PSB function in oligotrophic growth substrates remains poorly studied. In this study, we isolated lead (Pb)- and cadmium (Cd)-resistant PSB from contaminated sandy soil at an abandoned lubricant plant. The isolated Pantoea sp. PP4 (PP4 hereafter) can produce organic acid and IAA (Indole-3-acetic acid) and dissolve up to 238 mg/L of inorganic phosphate Ca2(PO4)3, exhibiting biosorption capability for Pb and bioprecipitation for Pb and Cd. In the sand pot experiment, inoculation of PP4 increased the accumulation of Pb and Cd in Lolium multiflorum Lam. by 28.9% and 95.5%, respectively, and increased the available phosphorous in oligotrophic river sand by 30.8% (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the growth of Lolium multiflorum Lam. was also stimulated, resulting in 89.2%, 57.1%, 184.6%, and 28.5% increase in fresh weight, dry weight, root length, and shoot length, respectively. NMDS analysis showed that the bacterial communities in river sand were more clustered after inoculation with PP4. These results indicated that the application of Pantoea sp. PP4 can facilitate the phytoremediation of Pb and Cd in oligotrophic growth substrates, forming a convergent bacterial community. Our findings highlighted the importance of identifying ideal PSB to improve phytoremediation efficiency in oligotrophic environments.

Biocompatible Carbon Dot Decorated α-FeOOH Nanohybrid for an Effective Fluorometric Sensing of Cr (VI) in Wastewater and Living Cells

This article reports the fluorometric detection of toxic hexavalent chromium Cr (VI)) in wastewater and Cr (VI) contaminated living cells using in-situ grown carbon quantum dots into the goethite (α-FeOOH) nano-matrix. The synthesized nano-hybrid shows enormous potential in determining the chromium contamination levels in various types of water samples. This selective fluorometric probe is enormously sensitive (LOD 81 nM) toward hexavalent chromium, which makes it a dedicated chromium sensor. Moreover, the sensing mechanism has been assessed using Stern-Volmer's equation and fluorescence lifetime experiments showing the simultaneous occurrence of photoinduced electron transfer and the inner filter effect. This chromium sensor has also been employed to assess the contamination level in real-life industrial wastewater. The performance of this probe in a real-life wastewater sample is quite commendable. Further, this biocompatible fluorometric probe has been used to demonstrate the in-vitro sensing of Cr (VI) in HeLa cells. The rapid detection mechanism of hexavalent chromium in living cells has been validated using theoretical docking simulations. Henceforth, this fluorometric sensor material could open new avenues not only in wastewater monitoring but also in biomedical applications.

Use of Generalized Weighted Quantile Sum Regressions of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha and Kidney Function to Explore Joint Effects of Multiple Metals in Blood

Exposure to heavy metals could lead to adverse health effects by oxidative reactions or inflammation. Some essential elements are known as reactors of anti-inflammatory enzymes or coenzymes. The relationship between tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and heavy metal exposures was reported. However, the interaction between toxic metals and essential elements in the inflammatory response remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in blood and TNF-α as well as kidney function. We enrolled 421 workers and measured the levels of these seven metals/metalloids and TNF-α in blood; kidney function was calculated by CKD-EPI equation. We applied weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and group WQS regression to assess the effects of metal/metalloid mixtures to TNF-α and kidney function. We also approached the relationship between metals/metalloids and TNF-α by generalized additive models (GAM). The relationship of the exposure−response curve between Pb level and TNF-α in serum was found significantly non-linear after adjusting covariates (p < 0.001). Within the multiple-metal model, Pb, As, and Zn were associated with increased TNF-α levels with effects dedicated to the mixture of 50%, 31%, and 15%, respectively. Grouped WQS revealed that the essential metal group showed a significantly negative association with TNF-α and kidney function. The toxic metal group found significantly positive associations with TNF-α, serum creatinine, and WBC but not for eGFR. These results suggested Pb, As, Zn, Se, and mixtures may act on TNF-α even through interactive mechanisms. Our findings offer insights into what primary components of metal mixtures affect inflammation and kidney function during co-exposure to metals; however, the mechanisms still need further research.

In vitro and in silico Studies Reveal Bacillus cereus AA-18 as a Potential Candidate for Bioremediation of Mercury-Contaminated Wastewater

Mercury (Hg) pollution is a worldwide problem and increasing day by day due to natural and anthropogenic sources. In this study, mercury-resistant (HgR) bacterial isolates were isolated from industrial wastewater of Ittehad Chemicals Ltd., Kala Shah Kaku, Lahore, Pakistan. Out of 65 bacterial isolates, five isolates were screened out based on showing resistance at 30–40 μg/ml against HgCl2. Selected Hg-resistant bacterial isolates were characterized as Bacillus subtilis AA-16 (OK562835), Bacillus cereus AA-18 (OK562834), Bacillus sp. AA-20 (OK562833), Bacillus paramycoides AA-30 (OK562836), and Bacillus thuringiensis AA-35 (OK562837). B. cereus AA-18 showed promising results in the resistance of HgCl2 (40 μg/ml) due to the presence of merA gene. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of immobilized B. cereus AA-18 showed the accumulation Hg on the cell surface. The inoculation of immobilized B. cereus AA-18 remediated 86% Hg of industrial wastewater up to 72 h at large scale (p &lt; 0.05). In silico analysis showed structural determination of MerA protein encoded by merA gene of B. cereus AA-18 (OK562598) using ProtParam, Pfam, ConSurf Server, InterPro, STRING, Jpred4, PSIPRED, I-TASSER, COACH server, TrRosetta, ERRAT, VERIFY3D, Ramachandran plot, and AutoDock Vina (PyRx 8.0). These bioinformatics tools predicted the structural-based functional homology of MerA protein (mercuric reductase) associated with mer operon harboring bacteria involved in Hg-bioremediation system.

A computational study on the adsorption of arsenic pollutants on graphene-based single-atom iron adsorbents

Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is a promising clean technology for coal power generation; however, the high volatility and toxicity of arsenic pollutants (As₂, As₄, AsO and AsH₃) released from an IGCC coal plant cause serious damage to human health and the ecological environment. Therefore, highly efficient adsorbents for simultaneous treatment of multiple arsenic pollutants are urgently needed. In this work, the adsorption characteristics and competitive adsorption behaviors of As₂, As₄, AsO, and AsH₃ on four kinds of graphene-based single-atom iron adsorbents (Fe/GA) were systematically investigated through density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The results suggest that single-vacancy Fe/GA doped with three nitrogen atoms has the largest adsorption ability for As₂, As₄, AsO and AsH₃. The adsorption energies of As₂, AsO and As₄ on Fe/GA depend on both charge transfer and orbital hybridization, while the adsorption energy of AsH₃ is mainly decided by electronic transfer. The adsorption differences of As₂, As₄, AsO and AsH₃ on four Fe/GA adsorbents can be explained through the obvious linear relationship between the adsorption energy and Fermi softness. As₂, As₄, AsO and AsH₃ will compete for adsorption sites when they exist on the same adsorbent surface simultaneously, and the adsorption capacities of AsO and As₂ are relatively stronger. After the competitive adsorption between AsO and As₂, AsO occupies the adsorption site at 300-900 K. This theoretical work suggests that Fe/GA is a promising adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of multiple arsenic pollutants with high adsorption capacity and low cost.

Cadmium phytoextraction through Brassica juncea L. under different consortia of plant growth-promoting bacteria from different ecological niches

Combined bioaugmentation inoculants composed of two or more plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) were more effective than single inoculants for plant growth and cadmium (Cd) removal in contaminated soils. However, the principles of consortia construction still need to be discovered. Here, a pot experiment with Cd natural polluted soil was conducted and PGPB consortia with different ecological niches from hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance were used to compare their effects and mechanisms on plant growth condition, Cd phytoextraction efficiency, soil enzymatic activities, and rhizospheric bacterial community of Brassica juncea L. The results showed that both rhizospheric and endophytic PGPB consortia inoculants promoted plant growth (6.9%-22.1%), facilitated Cd uptake (230.0%-350.0%) of oilseed rape, increased Cd phytoextraction efficiency (343.0%-441.0%), and enhanced soil Cd removal rates (92.0%-144.0%). PGPB consortia inoculants also enhanced soil microbial carbon by 22.2%-50.5%, activated the activities of soil urease and sucrase by 74.7%-158.4% and 8.4%-61.3%, respectively. Simultaneously, PGPB consortia inoculants increased the relative abundance of Flavobacterium, Rhodanobacter, Kosakonia, Pseudomonas and Paraburkholderia at the genus level, which may be beneficial to plant growth promotion and bacterial phytopathogen biocontrol. Although the four PGPB consortia inoculants promoted oilseed growth, amplified Cd phytoextraction, and changed bacterial community structure in rhizosphere soil, their original ecological niches were not a decisive factor for the efficiency of PGPB consortia. therefore, the results enriched the present knowledge regarding the significant roles of PGPB consortia as bioaugmentation agents and preliminarily explored construction principles of effective bioaugmentation inoculants, which will provide insights into the microbial responses to combined inoculation in the Cd-contaminated soils.

Paradigms of actinorhizal symbiosis under the regime of global climatic changes: New insights and perspectives

Nitrogen occurs as inert and inaccessible dinitrogen gaseous form (N₂ ) in the atmosphere. Biological nitrogen fixation is a chief process that makes this dinitrogen (N₂ ) accessible and bioavailable in the form of ammonium (NH₄ ⁺ ) ions. The key organisms to fix nitrogen are certain prokaryotes, called diazotrophs either in the free-living form or establishing significant mutual relationships with a variety of plants. On such examples is ~95-100 MY old incomparable symbiosis between dicotyledonous trees and a unique actinobacterial diazotroph in diverse ecosystems. In this association, the root of the certain dicotyledonous tree (~25 genera and 225 species) belonging to three different taxonomic orders, Fagales, Cucurbitales, and Rosales (FaCuRo) known as actinorhizal trees can host a diazotroph, Frankia of order Frankiales. Frankia is gram-positive, branched, filamentous, sporulating, and free-living soil actinobacterium. It resides in the specialized, multilobed, and coralloid organs (lateral roots but without caps), the root nodules of actinorhizal tress. This review aims to provide systematic information on the distribution and the phylogenetic diversity of hosts from FaCuRo and their micro-endosymbionts (Frankia spp.), colonization mechanisms, and signaling pathways. We also aim to provide details on developmental and physiological imperatives for gene regulation and functional genomics of symbiosis, phenomenal restoration ecology, influences of contemporary global climatic changes, and anthropogenic impacts on plant-Frankia interactions for the functioning of ecosystems and the biosphere.

Research progress in the removal of heavy metals by modified chitosan

Chitosan and its modifiers have been widely studied for their good biocompatibility and excellent adsorption properties for heavy metal ions. The synthesis and application of modified chitosan, the effects of process variables (such as pH, amount of adsorbent, temperature, contact time, etc.), adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics and the adsorption mechanism on the removal of heavy metal ions are reviewed. The purpose is to provide the latest information about chitosan as adsorbent and to promote the synthesis of modified chitosan and its application in the removal of heavy metals.

Functionalization of MXene-based nanomaterials for the treatment of micropollutants in aquatic system: A review

The increased industrialization and urbanization generate a larger quantity of effluent that is discharged into the environment regularly. Based on the effluent composition produced from various industries, the number of hazardous substances such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, organic chemicals, microorganisms introduced into the aquatic systems vary. The conventional wastewater treatment systems do not meet the effluent standards before discharge and require a different treatment system before reuse. Adsorption is an eco-friendly technique that uses selective adsorbents to remove hazardous pollutants even at microscale levels. MXene, a 2-Dimensional nanomaterial with resplendent properties like conductivity, hydrophilicity, stability, and functionalized surface characteristics, is found as a potential candidate for pollutant removal systems. This review discusses the fabrication, characterization, and application of MXene based nanoparticles to remove many pollutants in water treatment systems. The improvement in surface properties and adsorption capacity of MXene based NPs, when modified using different modification agents, has also been discussed. Their feasibility in terms of economic and environmental aspects has been evaluated to understand their scope for practical application in large-scale industries. The challenges towards the synthesis and toxicity's importance have been discussed, with the appropriate recommendations.

Assessment of Heavy Metals Accumulation in Soil and Native Plants in an Industrial Environment, Saudi Arabia

Industrial activities are associated with various heavy metals (HMs) being emitted into the environment, which may pose a threat to humans and animals. The rapid increase in an industrial activity in major cities in Saudi Arabia (SA) has raised concerns regarding the accumulation of HMs in the environment. The aim of this study is to assess the accumulation of HMs in soil and native plants in an industrial environment. We collected 36 surface soil samples and 12 plant species from 12 sites in an industrial city in central SA. The results showed that the HMs content in the soil followed a descending order of (Fe > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cu> Cr > Cd). The enrichment factor (EF) of HMs in the soil ranged from 0.20 to 7336. Up to 100%, 16.6%, and 6.2% of soil samples were extremely highly enriched with Cd, Ni, and Pb, respectively. Plant species Cyperus laevigatus accumulate Cd, Pb, and Ni. Citrullus colocynthis accumulate Cd and Pb in significantly (p < 0.001) higher amounts than other studied species. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values for the 12 sites ranged from 0.52–1.33 with S5 and S2 PLI >1.0 indicating progressive deterioration of these sites. The Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) ranged from 0.04–2.76 and revealed that some plant species may be candidates for phytoextraction potential. The most promising plant species for phytoextraction and remediation were annuals or perennials such as Malva parviflora, Sisymbrium irio and Citrullus colocynthis, especially for Cr and Cu. This study suggests that these native plant species may be useful for phytoremediation in the area.
