Time and Mechanism of Nanoparticle Functionalization by Macromolecular Ligands during Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquids

Laser ablation of gold in liquids with nanosecond laser pulses in aqueous solutions of inorganic electrolytes and macromolecular ligands for gold nanoparticle size quenching is probed inside the laser-induced cavitation bubble by in situ X-ray multicontrast imaging with a Hartmann mask (XHI). It is found that (i) the in situ size quenching power of sodium chloride (NaCl) in comparison to the ablation in pure water can be observed by the scattering contrast from XHI already inside the cavitation bubble, while (ii) for polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a macromolecular model ligand an in situ size quenching cannot be observed. Complementary ex situ characterization confirms the overall size quenching ability of both additive types NaCl and PVP. The macromolecular ligand as well as its monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) are mainly effective for growth quenching of larger nanoparticles on later time scales, leading to the conclusion of an alternative interaction mechanism with ablated nanoparticles compared to the electrolyte NaCl, probably outside of the cavitation bubble, in the surrounding liquid phase. While monomer and polymer have similar effects on the particle properties, with the polymer being slightly more efficient, only the polymer is effective against hydrodynamic aggregation.

The Effect of Gold Nanoparticle Concentration and Laser Fluence on the Laser-Induced Water Decomposition

This Article covers the influence of the concentration of gold nanoparticles on laser-induced water decomposition. It was established that addition of gold nanoparticles intensifies laser-induced water decomposition by almost 2 orders of magnitude. The water decomposition rate was shown to be maximal at a nanoparticle concentration around 10¹⁰ NP/mL, whereas a decrease or increase of nanoparticle concentration leads to a decrease of water decomposition rate. It was demonstrated that, if the concentration of nanoparticles in water-based colloid was less than 10¹⁰ NP/mL, laser irradiation of the colloid caused formation of molecular hydrogen, hydrogen peroxide, and molecular oxygen. If the concentration of nanoparticles exceeded 10¹¹ NP/mL, only two products, molecular hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide, were formed. Correlations between the water decomposition rate and the main optical and acoustic parameters of optical breakdown-generated plasma were investigated. Variants of laser-induced decomposition of colloidal solutions of nanoparticles based on organic solvents (ethanol, propanol-2, butanol-2, diethyl ether) were also analyzed.

Nanosecond-Laser Generation of Nanoparticles in Liquids: From Ablation through Bubble Dynamics to Nanoparticle Yield

A comprehensive picture of the nanosecond-laser generation of colloidal nanoparticles in liquids is nowadays the demand of their high-throughput industrial fabrication for diverse perspective biomedical, material science, and optoelectronic applications. In this study, using silicon as an example, we present a self-consistent experimental visualization and theoretical description of key transient stages during nanosecond-laser generation of colloidal nanoparticles in liquids: plasma-mediated injection of ablated mass into the liquid and driving the vapor bubble, finalized by the colloid appearance in the liquid. The explored fundamental transient stages envision the basic temporal and spatial scales, as well as laser parameter windows, for the demanded high-throughput nanosecond-laser generation of colloidal nanoparticles in liquids.

Continuous-wave laser-induced welding and giant photoluminescence enhancement of Au nanospheres

Photoluminescence (PL) of Au nanoparticles is appealing for various biological applications, owing to their unique advantages. However, widespread applications are still limited by their extremely low quantum yield. Here, we report on the giant PL enhancement of aggregated Au nanospheres by continuous-wave (CW) laser irradiation. Our studies show that the laser-induced PL enhancement is influenced by the wavelength and power density of irradiation laser, as well as the size of Au nanospheres. The averaged intensity of Au nanospheres after irradiation by 405 nm CW laser at power density of 6 MW/cm² is 75 times that of the as-prepared sample, where the highest enhancement of 150 folds is obtained. The giant PL enhancement is attributed to laser-induced photothermal welding and reshaping of adjacent Au nanospheres, which will dramatically enhance the incidence light field in the crevices around the welding areas by surface plasmon resonance. These studies not only declare that Au nanospheres are expected to find many new applications in PL-based biosensing and bioiamging, but also suggest that CW laser can be used as a versatile tool to weld and reshape the Au nanospheres in order to build up functionalized electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Determining the Composite Structure of Au-Fe-Based Submicrometre Spherical Particles Fabricated by Pulsed-Laser Melting in Liquid

Submicrometre spherical particles made of Au and Fe can be fabricated by pulsed-laser melting in liquid (PLML) using a mixture of Au and iron oxide nanoparticles as the raw particles dispersed in ethanol, although the detailed formation mechanism has not yet been clarified. Using a 355 nm pulsed laser to avoid extreme temperature difference between two different raw particles during laser irradiation and an Fe₂O₃ raw nanoparticle colloidal solution as an iron source to promote the aggregation of Au and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles, we performed intensive characterization of the products and clarified the formation mechanism of Au-Fe composite submicrometre spherical particles. Because of the above two measures (Fe₂O₃ raw nanoparticle and 355 nm pulsed laser), the products-whether the particles are phase-separated or homogeneous alloys-basically follow the phase diagram. In Fe-rich range, the phase-separated Au-core/Fe-shell particles were formed, because quenching induces an earlier solidification of the Fe-rich component as a result of cooling from the surrounding ethanol. If the particle size is small, the quenching rate becomes very rapid and particles were less phase-separated. For high Au contents exceeding 70% in weight, crystalline Au-rich alloys were formed without phase separation. Thus, this aggregation control is required to selectively form homogeneous or phase-separated larger submicrometre-sized particles by PLML.

Explosives sensing using Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation and irradiation

Herein we demonstrate the synthesis of Ag-Cu alloy NPs through a consecutive two-step process; laser ablation followed by laser irradiation. Initially, pure Ag and Cu NPs were produced individually using the laser ablation in liquid technique (with ∼50 femtosecond pulses at 800 nm) which was followed by laser irradiation of the mixed Ag and Cu NPs in equal volume. These Ag, Cu, and Ag-Cu NPs were characterised by UV-visible absorption, HRTEM and XRD techniques. The alloy formation was confirmed by the presence of a single surface plasmon resonance peak in absorption spectra and elemental mapping using FESEM techniques. Furthermore, the results from surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies performed for the methylene blue (MB) molecule suggested that Ag-Cu alloy NPs demonstrate a higher enhancement factor (EF) compared to pure Ag/Cu NPs. Additionally, SERS studies of Ag-Cu alloy NPs were implemented for the detection of explosive molecules such as picric acid (PA - 5 μM), ammonium nitrate (AN - 5 μM) and the dye molecule methylene blue (MB - 5 nM). These alloy NPs exhibited superiority in the detection of various analyte molecules with good reproducibility and high sensitivity with EFs in the range of 104 to 107.

Kinetically-controlled laser-synthesis of colloidal high-entropy alloy nanoparticles

The single-step incorporation of multiple immiscible elements into colloidal high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles has manifold technological potential, but it continues to be a challenge for state-of-the-art synthesis methods. Hence, the development of a synthesis approach by which the chemical composition and phase of colloidal HEA nanoparticles can be controlled could lead to a new pool of nanoalloys with unparalleled functionalities. Herein, this study reports the single-step synthesis of colloidal CoCrFeMnNi HEA nanoparticles with targeted equimolar stoichiometry and diameters less than 5 nm by liquid-phase, ultrashort-pulsed laser ablation of the consolidated and heat-treated micropowders of the five constituent metals. Further, the scalability of the process with an unprecedented productivity of 3 grams of colloidal HEA nanoparticles per hour is demonstrated. Electrochemical analysis reveals a unique redox behavior of the particles' surfaces in an alkaline environment and a potential for future application as a heterogeneous catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction.

The laser ablation of a bulk CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy immersed in liquid yields colloidal nanoparticles with diameters below 5 nm. Both, the chemical composition and the crystal lattice of the bulk material is preserved in the nanoparticles.

Laser wavelength modulated pulsed laser ablation for selective and efficient production of graphene quantum dots

Simple preparation of graphene quantum dots with controllable surface states from graphite

Graphite is economic and earth-abundant carbon precursor for preparing graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Here, we report a facile and green approach to produce GQDs from graphite flakes via a pulsed laser ablation (PLA) method assisted by high-power sonication. A homogeneous dispersion of graphite flakes, caused by high-power sonication during PLA, leads to the formation of GQDs following a laser fragmentation in liquid (LFL) rather than laser ablation in liquid (LAL) mechanism. The final product of GQDs exhibits the distinct structural, chemical, and optical properties of pristine graphene itself. However, graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) with abundant surface oxygen-rich functional groups are readily formed from graphite flakes when high-power sonication is not employed during the PLA process. GQDs and GOQDs show a significantly different luminescence nature. Hence, selective production of either functional GQDs or GOQDs can be achieved by simply turning the high-power sonication during the PLA process on and off. We believe that our modified PLA process proposed in this work will further open up facile and simple routes for designing functional carbon materials.

The proposed technique enables selectively producing graphene quantum dots (on-GQDs) and graphene oxide quantum dots (off-GOQDs) by depending on the applying sonication during the pulsed laser ablation process.

Determining the role of redox-active materials during laser-induced water decomposition

The decomposition of water and the formation of molecular hydrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide during laser ablation of redox-active materials is systematically studied and related to the ablation rate and oxidation degree of the nanoparticles.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of lindane using metal-semiconductor Zn@ZnO and ZnO/Ag nanostructures

To achieve enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of lindane, we prepared metal-semiconductor composite nanoparticles (NPs). Zn@ZnO core-shell (CS) nanocomposites, calcined ZnO, and Ag-doped ZnO (ZnO/Ag) nanostructures were prepared using pulsed laser ablation in liquid, calcination, and photodeposition methods, respectively, without using surfactants or catalysts. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In addition, elemental analysis was performed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The obtained XRD and morphology results indicated good dispersion of Zn and Ag NPs on the surface of the ZnO nanostructures. Investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of lindane under UV-vis irradiation showed that Zn@ZnO CS nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic activity than the other prepared samples. The maximum degradation rate of lindane was 99.5% in 40min using Zn@ZnO CS nanocomposites. The radical trapping experiments verified that the hydroxyl radical (·OH) was the main reactive species for the degradation of lindane.

Green Procedure to Manufacture Nanoparticle-Decorated Paper Substrates

For this study, a paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was prepared. To prepare the substrates, aqueous suspensions of pulp fines, a side product from the paper production, were mixed with AgNP suspensions. The nanoparticle (NP) synthesis was then carried out via laser ablation of pure Ag in water. After the sheet formation process, the leaching of the AgNPs was determined to be low while the sheets exhibited antimicrobial activity toward Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Sensitive and Reproducible Gold SERS Sensor Based on Interference Lithography and Electrophoretic Deposition

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising analytical tool due to its label-free detection ability and superior sensitivity, which enable the detection of single molecules. Since its sensitivity is highly dependent on localized surface plasmon resonance, various methods have been applied for electric field-enhanced metal nanostructures. Despite the intensive research on practical applications of SERS, fabricating a sensitive and reproducible SERS sensor using a simple and low-cost process remains a challenge. Here, we report a simple strategy to produce a large-scale gold nanoparticle array based on laser interference lithography and the electrophoretic deposition of gold nanoparticles, generated through a pulsed laser ablation in liquid process. The fabricated gold nanoparticle array produced a sensitive, reproducible SERS signal, which allowed Rhodamine 6G to be detected at a concentration as low as 10-8 M, with an enhancement factor of 1.25 × 10⁵. This advantageous fabrication strategy is expected to enable practical SERS applications.

Irradiation of aqueous [AuCl4]- with 532 nm nanosecond (ns) laser pulses produces monodisperse (PDI = 0.04) 5 nm Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) without any additives or capping agents via a plasmon-enhanced photothermal autocatalytic mechanism. Compared with 800 nm femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, the AuNP growth kinetics under ns laser irradiation follow the same autocatalytic rate law, but with a significantly lower sensitivity to laser pulse energy. The results are explained using a simple model for simulating heat transfer in liquid water and at the interface with AuNPs. While the extent of water superheating with the ns laser is smaller compared to the fs laser, its significantly longer duration can provide sufficient energy to dissociate a small fraction of the [AuCl4]- present, resulting in the formation of AuNPs by coalescence of the resulting Au atoms. Irradiation of initially formed AuNPs at 532 nm results in plasmon-enhanced superheating of water, which greatly accelerates the rate of thermal dissociation of [AuCl4]- and accounts for the observed autocatalytic kinetics. The plasmon-enhanced heating under ns laser irradiation fragments the AuNPs and results in nearly uniform 5 nm particles, while the lack of particles' heating under fs laser irradiation results in the growth of the particles as large as 40 nm.

Nanostructured SnS2 Thin Films from Laser Ablated Nanocolloids: Structure, Morphology, Optoelectronic and Electrochemical Properties

Tin disulfide (SnS₂ ) is a binary chalcogenide semiconductor having applications in solar cells, energy storage, and optoelectronics. SnS₂ thin films were deposited by spraying the nanocolloids synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid. The structure, morphology, and optoelectronic properties were studied for films obtained from two liquid media (ethanol and isopropanol) and after heat treatments at various temperatures. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the hexagonal crystal structure of the films, whereas the 2-H polytype structure was identified by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Oxidation states of Sn (4+) and S (2-) identified from high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed the composition and chemical states of the films. The SnS₂ thin films exhibited distinct porous surface morphologies as the liquid medium in laser ablation was varied. All as-prepared and annealed films showed photoluminescence with a high intensity peak at 485 nm and a low intensity peak at 545 nm. Thin films annealed at 300 °C showed improved electrochemical properties upon illumination using a blue LED light source. Current-voltage curves recorded in dark and light as well as the photoresponse measurements showed their suitability for utilization in optoelectronic devices. The results of this study may trigger further research towards fabrication of nanostructured thin films in large area for optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical applications in an environment friendly and cost-effective way.

Comparative biological effects of spherical noble metal nanoparticles (Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt, Au) with 4-8 nm diameter

For a comparative cytotoxicity study, nanoparticles of the noble metals Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au (spherical, average diameter 4 to 8 nm) were prepared by reduction in water and colloidally stabilized with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). Thus, their shape, size, and surface functionalization were all the same. Size and morphology of the nanoparticles were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), analytical disc centrifugation (differential centrifugal sedimentation, DCS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Cell-biological experiments were performed to determine the effect of particle exposure on the viability of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Except for silver, no adverse effect of any of the metal nanoparticles was observed for concentrations up to 50 ppm (50 mg L-1) incubated for 24 h, indicating that noble metal nanoparticles (rhodium, palladium, platinum, gold) that do not release ions are not cytotoxic under these conditions.

Effect of Eu doping concentration on fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging properties of Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles used as dual-modal contrast agent

Europium-doped gadolinium oxide (Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺) nanoparticles (NPs) with favorable properties for use in fluorescence imaging (FI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) dual-modal contrast agent has attracted intense attention in biomedical applications. However, limited information is available on balancing FI and MRI by adjusting doping concentrations. In this study, Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ NPs with various Eu³⁺ doping concentrations were prepared by the facile and general technique of laser ablation in liquid (LAL). The influence of Eu³⁺-doping concentration on fluorescence properties and longitudinal relaxivity were investigated. The optimum Eu³⁺-doping concentration with both high fluorescence properties and longitudinal relaxivity was determined to be 5%. The characterization of the structure, morphology, and composition shows that these NPs possess good crystallinity and excellent dispersibility. These results show that Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ NPs prepared by LAL are promising candidates for highly efficient FI and MRI dual-modal contrast agents.

Laser Irradiation of Gd-Si and Gd-Si-Ge Colloid Mixtures for the Fabrication of Compound Nanoparticles

Binary (Gd5 Si4 , GdSi) and ternary (Gd5 Si2 Ge2 ) compound nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by laser irradiation of a mixture of colloidal solutions containing NPs of the relevant elements. It is assumed that the compound NPs are formed by heating, co-melting, and chemical interactions in the alloyed droplets. The blackbody-like radiation of the heated NPs was used for temperature control of the NP-preparation process. The obtained results demonstrate that laser irradiation of colloidal NPs provides unique possibilities not only for the synthesis of compound NPs but also for control of their phase composition and size. The synthesized Gd-based compound NPs exhibited magnetic transition at an ordering temperature, TC , in the range of 310-320 K. Thus, the magnetic properties of the synthesized particles confirm their potential for biomedical applications, in particular, for magnetic hyperthermia treatment.

Sb-Doped Titanium Oxide: A Rationale for Its Photocatalytic Activity for Environmental Remediation

The problem of water purification is one of the most urgent issues in developing countries, where large infrastructures and energy resources are limited. Among the possibilities for a cheap route to clean water, photocatalytic materials in the form of coatings or nanostructures are among the most promising. The most widely studied photocatalytic material is titanium dioxide (TiO2). Here, we investigate the photocatalytic properties of 1.5% Sb-doped TiO2 and laser-irradiated Sb-doped TiO x . Calcined Sb-doped TiO2 was found to adopt the rutile structure, but it turned amorphous after laser irradiation. Photocatalytic tests for Sb-doped TiO2 showed an activity 1 order of magnitude higher than that of an undoped TiO2 control sample under both ultraviolet and visible irradiation. A further sizeable enhancement resulted from laser irradiation. The increased photocatalytic activity is ascribed to both enhanced visible region absorption associated with Sb-induced lone pair surface electronic states and trapping of the holes at the lone pair surface sites, thus inhibiting the recombination of the electrons and holes generated in the initial photoexcitation step. This study shows the first rationalization of the photocatalytic properties of Sb-TiO2 in terms of its electronic structure.

Two Birds with One Stone: Spontaneous Size Separation and Growth Inhibition of Femtosecond Laser-Generated Surfactant-Free Metallic Nanoparticles via ex Situ SU-8 Functionalization

Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) offers a facile technique to develop a large variety of surfactant-free nanomaterials with high purity. However, due to the difficulty in the control of the particle synthesis process, the as-prepared nanomaterials always have a broad size distribution with a large polydispersity (σ). Surfactant-free properties can also cause problems with particle growth, which further increases the difficulty in size control of the colloids. Therefore, searching for strategies to simultaneously unify the sizes of colloids and inhibit particle growth has become significantly important for LAL-synthesized nanomaterials to be extensively used for biological, catalytic, and optical applications, in which fields particle size plays an important role. In this work, we present a facile way to simultaneously realize these two goals by ex situ SU-8 photoresist functionalization. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation of silver in acetone at laser powers of 300 and 600 mW were used as starting materials. The synthesized Ag NPs have a broad size distribution between 1 and 200 nm with an average size of ca. 5.9 nm and σ of 127-207%. After ex situ SU-8 functionalization and 6 months storage, most particles larger than 10 nm become aggregates and precipitate, which makes the size distribution narrow with an average diameter of 4-5 nm and σ of 48-78%. The precipitation process is accompanied by the decrease in colloid mass from the initial ∼0.2 to 0.10-0.11 mg after ex situ SU-8 functionalization and 6 months colloid storage. Morphology analysis indicates that ex situ SU-8 functionalization inhibits the particle growth into polygonal nanocrystals. Radical polymerization of SU-8 on Ag NPs is considered to be the reason for both spontaneous size separation and growth inhibition phenomena. Benefiting from Ag NPs embedment and acetone dissolution, the glass-transition temperature of SU-8 photoresist increased from 314 to 331 °C according to thermogravimetric analysis. The universality of ex situ SU-8 functionalization-induced growth inhibition and size separation behaviors is further proved using the Au colloids generated by LAL in acetone. This work is expected to provide a new route for better size control of LAL-synthesized colloids via ex situ photoresist functionalization, although a half of colloidal mass is wasted due to radical polymerization-induced colloidal precipitation.

Size effect studies in catalysis: a simple surfactant-free synthesis of sub 3 nm Pd nanocatalysts supported on carbon

Supported Pd nanoparticles are prepared under ambient conditions via a surfactant-free synthesis. Pd(NO₃)₂ is reduced in the presence of a carbon support in alkaline methanol to obtain sub 3 nm nanoparticles. The preparation method is relevant to the study of size effects in catalytic reactions like ethanol electro-oxidation.

A simple surfactant-free synthesis of sub 3 nm carbon-supported Pd nanocatalysts is introduced to study size effects in catalysis.

Catalyst Support Effect on the Activity and Durability of Magnetic Nanoparticles: toward Design of Advanced Electrocatalyst for Full Water Splitting

Earth-abundant element-based inorganic-organic hybrid materials are attractive alternatives for electrocatalyzing energy conversion reactions. Such material structures do not only increase the surface area and stability of metal nanoparticles (NPs) but also modify the electrocatalytic performance. Here, we introduce, for the first time, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized with nitrogen-rich emeraldine salt (ES) (denoted as ES-MWNT) as a promising catalyst support to boost the electrocatalytic activity of magnetic maghemite (γ-Fe₂O₃) NPs. The latter component has been synthesized by a simple and upscalable one-step pulsed laser ablation method on Ni core forming the core-shell Ni@γ-Fe₂O₃ NPs. The catalyst (Ni@γ-Fe₂O₃/ES-MWNT) is formed via self-assembly as strong interaction between ES-MWNT and Ni@γ-Fe₂O₃ results in NPs' encapsulation in a thin C-N shell. We further show that Ni does not directly function as an active site in the electrocatalyst but it has a crucial role in synthesizing the maghemite shell. The strong interaction between the NPs and the support improves notably the NPs' catalytic activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in terms of both onset potential and current density, ranking it among the most active catalysts reported so far. Furthermore, this material shows a superior durability to most of the current excellent OER electrocatalysts as the activity, and the structure, remains almost intact after 5000 OER stability cycles. On further characterization, the same trend has been observed for hydrogen evolution reaction, the other half-reaction of water splitting.

How the crystal structure and phase segregation of Au-Fe alloy nanoparticles are ruled by the molar fraction and size

The application of an Au-Fe nanoalloy is determined by its internal phase structure. Our experimental and theoretical findings explain how the prevalence of either a core-shell or a disordered solid solution structure is ruled by the target composition and the particle diameter. Furthermore, we found metastable phases not predefined by the bulk phase diagram.

From Complex Inorganic Oxides to Ag-Bi Nanoalloy: Synthesis by Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Bimetallic nanoalloys with a wide variety of structures and compositions have been fabricated through many diverse techniques. Generally, various steps and chemicals are involved in their fabrication. In this study, the synthesis of Ag-Bi nanoalloys by femtosecond laser irradiation of an inorganic oxide Ag₂WO₄/NaBiO₃ target without any chemicals like reducing agents or solvent is presented. The interaction between these materials and the ultrashort pulse of light allows the migration of Ag and Bi atoms from the crystal lattice to the particles surfaces and then to the plasma plume, where the reduction of the positively charged Ag and Bi species in their respective metallic species takes place. Subsequently, the controlled nucleation and growth of the Ag-Bi alloyed nanoparticles occurs in situ during the irradiation process in air. Although at the bulk level, these elements are highly immiscible, it was experimentally demonstrated that at nanoscale, the Ag-Bi nanoalloy can assume a randomly mixed structure with up to 6 ± 1 atom % of Bi solubilized into the face-centered cubic structure of Ag. Furthermore, the Ag-Bi binary system possesses high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-resistant and methicilin-susceptible), which is interesting for potential antimicrobial applications, consequently increasing their range of applicability. The present results provide potential insights into the structures formed by the Ag-Bi systems at the nanoscale and reveal a new processing method where complex inorganic oxides can be used as precursors for the controlled synthesis of alloyed bimetallic nanoparticles.

Magnetic Fe@FeOx, Fe@C and α-Fe₂O₃ Single-Crystal Nanoblends Synthesized by Femtosecond Laser Ablation of Fe in Acetone

There are few reports on zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization measurements for Fe@FeO_x or FeO_x particles synthesized by laser ablation in liquids (LAL) of Fe, and the minimum blocking temperature (T_B) of 120 K reported so far is still much higher than those of their counterparts synthesized by chemical methods. In this work, the minimum blocking temperature was lowered to 52 K for 4⁻5 nm α-Fe₂O₃ particles synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation of Fe in acetone. The effective magnetic anisotropy energy density (K_eff) is calculated to be 2.7⁻5.4 × 10⁵ J/m³, further extending the K_eff values for smaller hematite particles synthesized by different methods. Large amorphous-Fe@α-Fe₂O₃ and amorphous-Fe@C particles of 10⁻100 nm in diameter display a soft magnetic behavior with saturation magnetization (M_s) and coercivities (H_c) values of 72.5 emu/g and 160 Oe at 5 K and 61.9 emu/g and 70 Oe at 300 K, respectively, which mainly stem from the magnetism of amorphous Fe cores. Generally, the nanoparticles obtained by LAL are either amorphous or polycrystalline, seldom in a single-crystalline state. This work also demonstrates the possibility of synthesizing single-crystalline α-Fe₂O₃ hematite crystals of several nanometers with (104), (113), (116) or (214) crystallographic orientations, which were produced simultaneously with other products including carbon encapsulated amorphous Fe (a-Fe@C) and Fe@FeO_x core-shell particles by LAL in one step. Finally, the formation mechanisms for these nanomaterials are proposed and the key factors in series events of LAL are discussed.

Ag/Au Nanoparticle-Loaded Paper-Based Versatile Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates for Multiple Explosives Detection

We present a systematic study on the fabrication, characterization of versatile, and low-cost filter paper-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates loaded with salt-induced aggregated Ag/Au nanoparticles (NPs). These were demonstrated as efficient SERS substrates for the detection of multiple explosive molecules such as picric acid (5 μM), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (1 μM), and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (10 μM) along with a common dye molecule (methylene blue, 5 nM). The concentrations of the dye and explosive molecules in terms of mass represent 31.98 pg, 11.45 ng, 1.82 ng, and 13.06 ng, respectively. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) colloidal NPs were prepared by femtosecond laser (∼50 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz) ablation of Ag/Au-target immersed in distilled water. Subsequently, the aggregated nanoparticles were achieved by mixing the pure Ag and Au NPs with different concentrations of NaCl. These aggregated NPs were characterized by UV-visible absorption and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques. The SERS substrates were prepared by soaking the filter paper in aggregated NPs. The morphologies of the paper substrates were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy technique. We have achieved superior enhancements with high reproducibility and sensitivity for filter paper substrates loaded with Ag/Au NPs mixed for an optimum concentration of 50 mM NaCl.

The Pros and Cons of the Use of Laser Ablation Synthesis for the Production of Silver Nano-Antimicrobials

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well-known for their antimicrobial effects and several groups are proposing them as active agents to fight antimicrobial resistance. A wide variety of methods is available for nanoparticle synthesis, affording a broad spectrum of chemical and physical properties. In this work, we report on AgNPs produced by laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS), discussing the major features of this approach. Laser ablation synthesis is one of the best candidates, as compared to wet-chemical syntheses, for preparing Ag nano-antimicrobials. In fact, this method allows the preparation of stable Ag colloids in pure solvents without using either capping and stabilizing agents or reductants. LASiS produces AgNPs, which can be more suitable for medical and food-related applications where it is important to use non-toxic chemicals and materials for humans. In addition, laser ablation allows for achieving nanoparticles with different properties according to experimental laser parameters, thus influencing antibacterial mechanisms. However, the concentration obtained by laser-generated AgNP colloids is often low, and it is hard to implement them on an industrial scale. To obtain interesting concentrations for final applications, it is necessary to exploit high-energy lasers, which are quite expensive. In this review, we discuss the pros and cons of the use of laser ablation synthesis for the production of Ag antimicrobial colloids, taking into account applications in the food packaging field.

Spontaneous Shape Alteration and Size Separation of Surfactant-Free Silver Particles Synthesized by Laser Ablation in Acetone during Long-Period Storage

The technique of laser ablation in liquids (LAL) has already demonstrated its flexibility and capability for the synthesis of a large variety of surfactant-free nanomaterials with a high purity. However, high purity can cause trouble for nanomaterial synthesis, because active high-purity particles can spontaneously grow into different nanocrystals, which makes it difficult to accurately tailor the size and shape of the synthesized nanomaterials. Therefore, a series of questions arise with regards to whether particle growth occurs during colloid storage, how large the particle size increases to, and into which shape the particles evolve. To obtain answers to these questions, here, Ag particles that are synthesized by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of Ag in acetone are used as precursors to witness the spontaneous growth behavior of the LAL-generated surfactant-free Ag dots (2–10 nm) into different polygonal particles (5–50 nm), and the spontaneous size separation phenomenon by the carbon-encapsulation induced precipitation of large particles, after six months of colloid storage. The colloids obtained by LAL at a higher power (600 mW) possess a greater ability and higher efficiency to yield colloids with sizes of <40 nm than the colloids obtained at lower power (300 mW), because of the generation of a larger amount of carbon ‘captors’ by the decomposition of acetone and the stronger particle fragmentation. Both the size increase and the shape alteration lead to a redshift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of the Ag colloid from 404 nm to 414 nm, after storage. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis shows that the Ag particles are conjugated with COO– and OH– groups, both of which may lead to the growth of polygonal particles. The CO and CO₂ molecules are adsorbed on the particle surfaces to form Ag(CO)_x and Ag(CO₂)_x complexes. Complementary nanosecond LAL experiments confirmed that the particle growth was inherent to LAL in acetone, and independent of pulse duration, although some differences in the final particle sizes were observed. The nanosecond-LAL yields monomodal colloids, whereas the size-separated, initially bimodal colloids from the fs-LAL provide a higher fraction of very small particles that are <5 nm. The spontaneous growth of the LAL-generated metallic particles presented in this work should arouse the special attention of academia, especially regarding the detailed discussion on how long the colloids can be preserved for particle characterization and applications, without causing a mismatch between the colloid properties and their performance. The spontaneous size separation phenomenon may help researchers to realize a more reproducible synthesis for small metallic colloids, without concern for the generation of large particles.

Femtosecond laser-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide hybrid for optical limiting

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) functionalized with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is prepared using a femtosecond laser ablation in liquids method. By ablating the mixed aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and graphene oxide (GO) using femtosecond laser pulses, Ag ions and GO are simultaneously reduced and well-dispersed Ag NPs supported on rGO are obtained. The effect of laser power, irritation time and Ag ion concentration on the optical property and morphology of the products are systematically studied. The nonlinear optical responses of the functionalized graphene are studied using a nanosecond Z-scan technique. The rGO hybrid shows an enhanced nonlinear absorption (NLA) effect compared with GO and rGO, and thus exhibits an excellent optical limiting (OL) property with very low activating threshold, which is estimated to be about 0.38 J cm^-2. The enhanced NLA effect in rGO hybrids makes it possible to fabricate solid-state optical limiter, improving the practicality of graphene materials in the OL area.

Bare laser-synthesized Au-based nanoparticles as nondisturbing surface-enhanced Raman scattering probes for bacteria identification

The ability of noble metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) (Au, Ag) to drastically enhance Raman scattering from molecules placed near metal surface, termed as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), is widely used for identification of trace amounts of biological materials in biomedical, food safety and security applications. However, conventional NPs synthesized by colloidal chemistry are typically contaminated by nonbiocompatible by-products (surfactants, anions), which can have negative impacts on many live objects under examination (cells, bacteria) and thus decrease the precision of bioidentification. In this article, we explore novel ultrapure laser-synthesized Au-based nanomaterials, including Au NPs and AuSi hybrid nanostructures, as mobile SERS probes in tasks of bacteria detection. We show that these Au-based nanomaterials can efficiently enhance Raman signals from model R6G molecules, while the enhancement factor depends on the content of Au in NP composition. Profiting from the observed enhancement and purity of laser-synthesized nanomaterials, we demonstrate successful identification of 2 types of bacteria (Listeria innocua and Escherichia coli). The obtained results promise less disturbing studies of biological systems based on good biocompatibility of contamination-free laser-synthesized nanomaterials.

Large Area α-Cu2S Particle-Stacked Nanorod Arrays by Laser Ablation in Liquid and Their Strong Structurally Enhanced and Stable Visible Photoelectric Performances

A flexible route is developed for fabrication of large area α-Cu₂S nanorod arrays (NRAs) on the basis of one-step laser ablation of a copper foil in CS₂ liquid. It has been demonstrated that the obtained products are the high-temperature phase α-Cu₂S and consist of the nanorods vertically standing on the Cu foil, exhibiting the array. The nanorods were about 1 μm in length and around 100 nm in thickness and built by stacking the nearly spherical and ⟨110⟩-oriented nanoparticles (NPs) up. Such array can be peeled off from the foil and remain freestanding. Further, it has been found that the ablation duration, the laser power, and the foil surface state are crucial to the formation of the Cu₂S NRA. The formation of such oriented NP-stacked Cu₂S NRAs is attributed to the laser-induced generation of α-Cu₂S NPs and the NPs' deposition/oriented connection growth on the surface-vulcanized copper foil. Importantly, the visible photocurrent response of the α-Cu₂S NRAs is 8 times higher than that of the Cu₂S NPs' film with the equivalent thickness and also larger than that of previously reported Cu₂S, showing significantly enhanced photoelectric performances. As an application, such NRAs have exhibited markedly enhanced visible photocatalytic activity and highly stable recycling performances, compared with the α-Cu₂S NPs. Further studies have revealed that the enhanced performances are attributed to the structurally enhanced light trapping effect of the NRAs as well as short and smooth carrier diffusion path in the oriented NP-stacked nanorods. This work provides a new and simple method for fabrication of the large area Cu₂S NRAs with high and stable photoelectric performances.

Development of A Low-Cost FPGA-Based Measurement System for Real-Time Processing of Acoustic Emission Data: Proof of Concept Using Control of Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquids

Today, the demand for continuous monitoring of valuable or safety critical equipment is increasing in many industrial applications due to safety and economical requirements. Therefore, reliable in-situ measurement techniques are required for instance in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) as well as process monitoring and control. Here, current challenges are related to the processing of sensor data with a high data rate and low latency. In particular, measurement and analyses of Acoustic Emission (AE) are widely used for passive, in-situ inspection. Advantages of AE are related to its sensitivity to different micro-mechanical mechanisms on the material level. However, online processing of AE waveforms is computationally demanding. The related equipment is typically bulky, expensive, and not well suited for permanent installation. The contribution of this paper is the development of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based measurement system using ZedBoard devlopment kit with Zynq-7000 system on chip for embedded implementation of suitable online processing algorithms. This platform comprises a dual-core Advanced Reduced Instruction Set Computer Machine (ARM) architecture running a Linux operating system and FPGA fabric. A FPGA-based hardware implementation of the discrete wavelet transform is realized to accelerate processing the AE measurements. Key features of the system are low cost, small form factor, and low energy consumption, which makes it suitable to serve as field-deployed measurement and control device. For verification of the functionality, a novel automatically realized adjustment of the working distance during pulsed laser ablation in liquids is established as an example. A sample rate of 5 MHz is achieved at 16 bit resolution.

Recent Advances in Laser-Ablative Synthesis of Bare Au and Si Nanoparticles and Assessment of Their Prospects for Tissue Engineering Applications

Driven by surface cleanness and unique physical, optical and chemical properties, bare (ligand-free) laser-synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) are now in the focus of interest as promising materials for the development of advanced biomedical platforms related to biosensing, bioimaging and therapeutic drug delivery. We recently achieved significant progress in the synthesis of bare gold (Au) and silicon (Si) NPs and their testing in biomedical tasks, including cancer imaging and therapy, biofuel cells, etc. We also showed that these nanomaterials can be excellent candidates for tissue engineering applications. This review is aimed at the description of our recent progress in laser synthesis of bare Si and Au NPs and their testing as functional modules (additives) in innovative scaffold platforms intended for tissue engineering tasks.

Liquid-phase laser ablation synthesis of graphene quantum dots from carbon nano-onions: Comparison with chemical oxidation

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been synthesized reproducibly by chemical oxidation (CO) of carbon nano-onions (nCNOs) and a one-step pulsed laser ablation (LA) of nCNOs in deionized water. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that the LA-GQDs have blue shifted emission relative to the CO-GQDs which is attributed to the effects of both particle sizes and surface functional groups. The CO-GQDs have an average diameter of 4.1(8) nm and a thickness corresponding to two or three graphene layers, while the LA-GQDs have an average diameter of 1.8(6) nm and a thickness comparable to a single layer of graphene. The CO-GQDs favor the presence of carboxylic groups and have a higher fraction of sp² carbons, while the LA-GQDs prefer the presence of hydroxyl groups and have a higher fraction of sp³ carbons. PL lifetime data suggests that surface functional groups are the main source of radiative deactivation and the sp² carbon domains are mainly responsible for non-radiative decay. PL lifetimes are measured to be 7.9(6) ns for the emission from the carboxylic groups and 3.18(10) ns from the hydroxyl groups. Compared to CO, liquid-phase LA is a faster and cleaner one-step method for producing GQDs with fewer starting chemicals and byproducts.

Photoelastic colloidal gel for a high-sensitivity strain sensor

Nanoparticles, having the ability to self-assemble into an ordered structure in their suspensions, analogous to liquid crystals, have attracted extensive attention. Herein, we report a new type of colloidal gel with an ordered crystal structure assembled from 1D and 2D nanoparticles. The material has high elasticity and, more interestingly, it shows significant photoelasticity. Its refractive index can be tuned under external stress and exhibits an ultra-wide dynamic range (Δn) of the order of 10^-2. Due to the large Δn, the material shows an extremely high strain sensibility of 720 nm/ε, an order of magnitude higher than the reported ones.

Sub-5 nm Ultrasmall Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Energy Storage

Synthesis of ultrasmall metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles has been widely recognized as a promising route to greatly enhance their properties but remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we report one facile and effective spatially confined thermal pulverization strategy to successfully transform bulk Co-MOF particles into sub-5 nm nanocrystals encapsulated within N-doped carbon/graphene (NC/G) by using conducting polymer coated Co-MOFs/graphene oxide as precursors. This strategy involves a feasible mechanism: calcination of Co-MOFs at proper temperature in air induces the partial thermal collapse/distortion of the framework, while the uniform coating of a conducting polymer can significantly improve the decomposition temperature and maintain the component stability of Co-MOFs, thus leading to the pulverization of bulk Co-MOF particles into ultrasmall nanocrystals without oxidation. The pulverization of Co-MOFs significantly increases the contact area between Co-MOFs with electrolyte and shortens the electron and ion transport pathway. Therefore, the sub-5 nm ultrasmall MOF nanocrystals-based composites deliver an ultrahigh reversible capacity (1301 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1), extraordinary rate performance (494 mAh g^-1 at 40 A g^-1), and outstanding cycling stability (98.6% capacity retention at 10 A g^-1 after 2000 cycles), which is the best performance achieved in all reported MOF-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Two mechanisms of nanoparticle generation in picosecond laser ablation in liquids: the origin of the bimodal size distribution

The synthesis of chemically clean and environmentally friendly nanoparticles through pulsed laser ablation in liquids has shown a number of advantages over conventional chemical synthesis methods and has evolved into a thriving research field attracting laboratory and industrial applications. The fundamental understanding of processes leading to the nanoparticle generation, however, still remains elusive. In particular, the origin of bimodal nanoparticle size distributions in femto- and picosecond laser ablation in liquids, where small nanoparticles (several nanometers) with narrow size distribution are commonly observed to coexist with larger (tens to hundreds of nanometers) ones, has not been explained so far. In this paper, joint computational and experimental efforts are applied to understand the mechanisms of nanoparticle formation in picosecond laser ablation in liquids and to explain the bimodal nanoparticle size distributions. The results of a large-scale atomistic simulation reveal the critical role of the dynamic interaction between the ablation plume and the liquid environment, leading to the generation of large nanoparticles through a sequence of hydrodynamic instabilities at the plume-liquid interface and a concurrent nucleation and growth of small nanoparticles in an expanding metal-liquid mixing region. The computational predictions are supported by a series of stroboscopic videography experiments showing the emergence of small satellite bubbles surrounding the main cavitation bubble generated in single pulse experiments. Carefully timed double pulse irradiation triggers expansion of secondary cavitation bubbles indicating, in accord with the simulation results, the presence of localized sites of laser energy deposition (possibly large nanoparticles) injected into the liquid at the early stage of the bubble formation.

Photoluminescence quenching of dye molecules near a resonant silicon nanoparticle

Luminescent molecules attached to resonant colloidal particles are an important tool to study light-matter interaction. A traditional approach to enhance the photoluminescence intensity of the luminescent molecules in such conjugates is to incorporate spacer-coated plasmonic nanoantennas, where the spacer prevents intense non-radiative decay of the luminescent molecules. Here, we explore the capabilities of an alternative platform for photoluminescence enhancement, which is based on low-loss Mie-resonant colloidal silicon particles. We demonstrate that resonant silicon particles of spherical shape are more efficient for photoluminescence enhancement than their plasmonic counterparts in spacer-free configuration. Our theoretical calculations show that significant enhancement originates from larger quantum yields supported by silicon particles and their resonant features. Our results prove the potential of high-index dielectric particles for spacer-free enhancement of photoluminescence, which potentially could be a future platform for bioimaging and nanolasers.

Laser Irradiation of Metal Oxide Films and Nanostructures: Applications and Advances

Recent technological advances in developing a diverse range of lasers have opened new avenues in material processing. Laser processing of materials involves their exposure to rapid and localized energy, which creates conditions of electronic and thermodynamic nonequilibrium. The laser-induced heat can be localized in space and time, enabling excellent control over the manipulation of materials. Metal oxides are of significant interest for applications ranging from microelectronics to medicine. Numerous studies have investigated the synthesis, manipulation, and patterning of metal oxide films and nanostructures. Besides providing a brief overview on the principles governing the laser-material interactions, here, the ongoing efforts in laser irradiation of metal oxide films and nanostructures for a variety of applications are reviewed. Latest advances in laser-assisted processing of metal oxides are summarized.
