Abstract
Adolescents and young adults are at heightened risk for eating disorder (ED) and muscle dysmorphia (MD) symptoms; yet, these symptoms and their relationships to harmful behaviors may also vary by gender. Thus, this study examined: 1) the prevalence of attempts to lose, gain, or maintain the same weight across gender identities, 2) purposes of weight change attempts, and 3) relationships between weight change attempts and ED and MD symptoms across cisgender men, women, and transgender and gender expansive (TGE) youth. 940 adolescents and young adults (57.4% cisgender women, 33.8% cisgender men, 8.8% TGE) completed questionnaires about weight change attempts, ED and MD symptoms. Women and TGE individuals attempted to lose weight more often than men, while men attempted to gain weight more often. All genders endorsed weight loss and gain attempts for different purposes. Weight loss attempts related to ED symptoms and appearance intolerance, whereas weight gain attempts related to MD symptoms across genders. In women, all weight change attempts related to greater functional impairment due to exercise. Findings highlight the need for tailored interventions to address desires to change one's body and underscore the harmful effects of weight change attempts across genders.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW There is a common perception among the public that yo-yo dieting, defined as repeated cycles of weight loss followed by weight regain, results in accumulation of fat in the body and lower metabolic rate, thus hindering subsequent attempts to lose weight. We evaluated the effects of weight-cycling on body weight and body mass index (BMI), body composition including fat mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM), and resting metabolic rate (RMR), by systematically reviewing existing scientific literature. RECENT FINDINGS Twenty-three cross-sectional and cohort studies (including subjects with a history of weight-cycling compared to those without such history) and interventional studies (evaluating physiological effects during one or more cycles of weight loss and regain) were identified, conducted in generally healthy adults across various age groups, races, and both genders, who had normal weight, overweight, or obesity. Eighteen studies investigated the association between weight-cycling and body weight or BMI, and thirteen of them found no significant association. Fifteen out of twenty studies also found no increase in FM, and none of eighteen studies found a decrease in LBM. Twelve out of fourteen studies reported no adverse changes in RMR either. The overwhelming majority of evidence suggests that weight-cycling (yo-yo effect) is not associated with any adverse effects in body weight, body composition, and metabolic rate. Accordingly, healthy individuals who struggle with overweight or obesity should not be discouraged from repeated attempts to lose the excess weight.

Abstract
Psychometrically sound measures of disordered eating during pregnancy are needed, particularly for pregnant individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25, who are at high risk for disordered eating attitudes/behaviors. We previously adapted the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) for use among pregnant individuals with BMI ≥ 25. This study examined the factor structure of the EDE-Pregnancy Version (EDE-PV) in a community sample of pregnant individuals with BMI ≥ 25. The EDE-PV was administered to 257 pregnant individuals with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 25 between 12 and 20 weeks gestation. The EDE-PV factor structure was determined using an exploratory factor analysis with oblique geomin rotation, internal consistency coefficients were calculated, and convergent and discriminant validity of the EDE-PV factors were assessed. An 11-item, two-factor solution produced an acceptable model fit. The subscales did not replicate those of the EDE and were interpreted as Pregnancy Eating and Weight Change Concerns and Pregnancy Shape and Weight Concerns (αs=.67 and .85; ωs=.70 and .85, respectively). These subscales showed small-to-moderate, positive correlations with weight and psychosocial distress measures and differentiated between participants with and without lifetime histories of any eating disorder diagnosis, demonstrating adequate convergent and discriminant validity. The results indicate that the EDE-PV can more reliably identify factors associated with disordered eating attitudes/behaviors among pregnant individuals with BMI ≥ 25 compared to the EDE and support our call for the development and use of new and/or adapted measures to appropriately assess disordered eating during pregnancy.

Abstract
Background Previous research has established the importance of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for weight control. One area of unexplored investigation is the relationship between individuals' perceptions of the importance of MVPA for weight control and MVPA engagement. This study examined the associations between the perceived importance of MVPA and MVPA engagement, weight loss, barriers to PA, and exercise enjoyment in adults enrolled in a long-term behavioral weight loss (BWL) intervention. Methods Adults (N = 301) with overweight/obesity (BMI = 27-45 kg/m2) completed an 18-month BWL intervention, followed by a no-intervention 18-month follow-up. At baseline, 6 months, 18 months (i.e., post-treatment), and 36 months (i.e., follow-up), participants ranked the importance of six strategies for weight control: keeping a food record, MVPA, light PA, self-weighing, small portions, and low-calorie diet. Observed MVPA (measured by accelerometer), percent weight loss, perceived barriers to PA, and exercise enjoyment were also measured at each assessment. Results Results showed that most participants perceived MVPA as a primary weight control strategy (first, second, or third most important) throughout the intervention, regardless of the weight control goal (weight loss vs. maintenance). Individuals who ranked MVPA as a primary strategy for weight control at concurrent time points, compared to those who did not, engaged in significantly more MVPA at post-treatment, had greater weight loss at follow-up, endorsed fewer barriers to PA at post-treatment and follow-up, and reported greater exercise enjoyment at baseline and post-treatment. Conclusion Perceived importance of MVPA was related to subjective experiences of MVPA, MVPA adherence, and weight loss in a long-term BWL intervention.

Abstract
The "Compensatory Health Beliefs" scale assesses the degree to which one believes that unhealthy behaviours can be compensated through healthier ones. However, no validated scale to assess compensatory weight-related behaviors exists. The study's objective was to develop (Study 1) and validate (Study 2) a questionnaire measuring compensatory health motivations and behaviors (CHMB) and to assess their associations with body mass index (BMI) and psychological weight-related measures. An initial 34-item measure was constructed based on a target sample's (Study 1, n = 158) suggestions and refined based on expert feedback. The measure was then tested in a representative Canadian adult sample (N = 1400, 48.7% male). The sample was stratified by sex and age and then randomly split into two (N = 701 for exploratory factor analysis; N = 699 for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) cross-validation). Fit indices, standardized Cronbach's alphas and the associations between the CHMB model with cognitive restraint, weight concerns, and BMI were assessed in multiple linear regression models controlling for age and sex. The final CHMB model (n = 17 items) consisted of four subscales: (1) motivation, (2) use on special occasions, (3) general use, (4) compensatory health beliefs. Fit indices (Goodness of Fit Index = 0.922) and Cronbach's alphas were good (α = 0.88). In multiple linear regression models, all CHMB subscales were associated with greater cognitive restraint in eating. Compensatory behavior use on special occasions was associated with greater weight concern (B = 0.12, p < .0001), while general compensatory behavior use was associated with lower weight concern (B = -0.07, p < .05). None of the subscales were associated with BMI. The validated CHMB scale allows for the assessment of compensatory health motivations and behaviors in a Canadian population. Research on whether this scale can predict weight changes and general health is needed.

Abstract
To examine changes in the use of diet, exercise, and pharmacological/diet product weight loss (WL) practices over time, and differences in these trends by sex and obesity status, data from the National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES Continuous 1999-2018) was used. The prevalence of diet, exercise and use of WL drugs and products over time were examined in men and women with and without obesity in a series of cross-sectional nationally representative samples (n = 43,020). Women and those with obesity were more likely to engage in WL practices over the past year, with an increased prevalence of WL efforts over time (38.4 to 43.2%). Amongst those who engaged in WL attempts, diet-related WL was most common (87-93%), followed by exercise-related WL (47-68%), whereas use of WL drugs and products was the least common (5-21%). There were modest differences in the prevalence of diet or exercise WL over time, with some differences by sex and obesity status. Most notable was the increase in the prevalence of exercise WL practices in women with obesity, with no differences among men or women without obesity. When examining specific types of diets, there were more clear differences in the adoption of diets over time, with the use of more traditional calorie/portion/fat restriction diets becoming less prevalent, and sugar/carbohydrate restriction becoming more prevalent over time (P<0.005). Changes over time in the use of diets were, were however, similar in men and women with and without obesity. Use of pharmacotherapy/diet products tended to decline in prevalence over time but was consistently highest in women with obesity. Thus, there are differences in the types of WL strategies individuals have employed over time, with variations in their popularity of use by sex and obesity status. However, the pattern of changes over time were quite similar in men and women with and without obesity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Controversies exist in the effect of body weight loss and fluctuation on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. This study aims to assess the effect of weight variability on CVD and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) cohort. METHOD Participants aged ≥ 40 year at the baseline period with at least 3 BMI measurements were included in this study. After excluding individuals with cancer, CVD, end-stage renal disease, systemic use of glucocorticoids, pregnancy, and missing covariates at the baseline, a total of 3461 participants were enrolled and followed for 18 years. BMI variability was defined using root mean squared error (RMSE) and average successive variability (ASV). In the RMSE method, BMI variability was calculated using the best-fitting model for BMI trend of each subject. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were applied to assess BMI variability's effect on CVD and mortality. RESULTS Among the 3461 participants in this study, the group with the highest weight variability had an increased risk of death for all-cause (HR 1.65; 95% CI 1.21-2.25), non-cardiovascular (HR 1.77; 95% CI 1.24-2.53), and non-cancer (HR 1.77; 95% CI 1.25-2.50) mortality. However, BMI variability showed to be protective against CVD (HR 0.76; 95% CI 0.6-0.97). These findings were significant in males, non-smokers, participants with age ≤ 60 year, BMI < 30, negative BMI slope, and both diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. CONCLUSION High BMI variability is associated with increased risk of all-cause, non-CVD, and non-cancer mortality, although protective for the CVD event. Appropriate strategies for body weight maintenance after weight loss could be adopted to avoid weight variability, particularly in non-obese subjects.

Abstract
Metabolic demands of skeletal muscle are substantial and are characterized normally as highly flexible and with a large dynamic range. Skeletal muscle composition (e.g., fiber type and mitochondrial content) and metabolism (e.g., capacity to switch between fatty acid and glucose substrates) are altered in obesity, with some changes proceeding and some following the development of the disease. Nonetheless, there are marked interindividual differences in skeletal muscle composition and metabolism in obesity, some of which have been associated with obesity risk and weight loss capacity. In this review, we discuss related molecular mechanisms and how current and novel treatment strategies may enhance weight loss capacity, particularly in diet-resistant obesity.

Abstract
Physical activity and obesity are known to be associated. We investigated whether a change in leisure time physical activities (LTPA) predicts a subsequent weight change, or vice versa.We used data from a longitudinal study among Danish adults surveyed in 1983-1984, 1987-1988, and 1993-1994. Between two sequential surveys, the change in LTPA was grouped as no change, became less or more active; the change in body weight was defined as no change, lost or gained of more than one body mass index (BMI) unit.Among 2386 adults, change in LTPA was not associated with subsequent weight change. However, a loss in body weight (BMI change < -1 unit) was associated with subsequent either becoming less [OR = 1.49, 95% CI (1.03-2.15)] or borderline more active [OR = 1.37, 95% CI (0.99-1.90)]. Subgroup analyses showed particularity among females that a loss in body weight was associated with subsequent becoming more active [OR = 1.83, 95% CI (1.15-2.89)].Our results suggest that change in LTPA is unrelated to subsequent weight change, but loss in body weight seems related to subsequent more active among female adults.

Abstract
Background Behavioral interventions produce clinically significant weight reduction, with many participants regaining weight subsequently. Most interventions focus on an individual, but dietary and physical activity behaviors occur with, or are influenced by, domestic partners. According to interdependence theory, couples who approach behavior change as a problem to be tackled together versus independently are more likely to utilize communal coping processes to promote behavior change. We utilized interdependence theory to develop a partner-assisted intervention to increase long-term weight loss. Methods Community-dwelling individuals (index participants) cohabitating with a partner with 1) overweight and at least one obesity-related comorbidity or 2) obesity are randomized to participate in a standard weight management program alone or with their partner. The weight management program involves biweekly, in-person, group sessions focusing on weight loss for six months, followed by three group sessions and nine telephone calls focusing on weight loss maintenance for twelve months. In the partner-assisted arm, partners participate in half of the group sessions and telephone calls. Couples receive training in principles of cognitive behavioral therapy for couples, including sharing thoughts and feelings and joint problem solving, to increase communal coping. The primary outcome is participant weight loss at 24 months, with caloric intake and moderate-intensity physical activity as secondary outcomes. Partner weight and caloric intake will also be analyzed. Mediation analyses will examine the role of interdependence variables and social support. Discussion This trial will provide knowledge about effective ways to promote long-term weight loss and the role of interdependence constructs in weight loss. Clinical trials identifier: NCT 03801174.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is an increasing global health problem and is associated with various diseases including stroke, respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Various weight control strategies such as exercise, calorie-restricted diet, anti-obesity medication, herbal medicine, and functional food are being used. The present study aimed to investigate the trends of weight control strategies in Korean adults METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2017. A total of 64,207 participants were analyzed. The body mass index (BMI), subjective judgment of body appearance, practice of weight control, and methods to control weight were analyzed according to year and sex. RESULTS The prevalence rate of obesity in men based on a BMI of 25 or higher was slightly increased from 37.0% in 2007 to 41.1% in 2017. Among the weight control strategies, use of exercise decreased from 83.8% to 80.5% in men, and from 73.4% to 69.5% in women, reduction in the amount of food consumed increased from 47.1% to 60.5% in men and from 65.1% to 70.6% in women, consumption of functional food increased from 3% to 6.2% in men and from 3.2% to 8.7% in women, and rate of skipping meals increased from 6.1% to 12.0% in men and from 11.5% to 14.0% in women. CONCLUSION The present study showed that exercise has decreased and dietary control and functional food consumption have increased as weight control strategies in Korean adults during the past decade.

Abstract
The incentive effects of food and related cues are determined by stimulus properties and the internal state of the organism. Enhanced hedonic reactivity and incentive motivation in energy deficient subjects have been demonstrated in animal models and humans. Defining the neurobiological underpinnings of these state-based modulatory effects could illuminate fundamental mechanisms of adaptive behavior, as well as provide insight into maladaptive consequences of weight loss dieting and the relationship between disturbed eating behavior and substance abuse. This article summarizes research of our laboratory aimed at identifying neuroadaptations induced by chronic food restriction (FR) that increase the reward magnitude of drugs and associated cues. The main findings are that FR decreases basal dopamine (DA) transmission, upregulates signaling downstream of the D1 DA receptor (D1R), and triggers synaptic incorporation of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Selective antagonism of CP-AMPARs decreases excitatory postsynaptic currents in NAc medium spiny neurons of FR rats and blocks the enhanced rewarding effects of d-amphetamine and a D1R, but not a D2R, agonist. These results suggest that FR drives CP-AMPARs into the synaptic membrane of D1R-expressing MSNs, possibly as a homeostatic response to reward loss. FR subjects also display diminished aversion for contexts associated with LiCl treatment and centrally infused cocaine. An encompassing, though speculative, hypothesis is that NAc synaptic incorporation of CP-AMPARs in response to food scarcity and other forms of sustained reward loss adaptively increases incentive effects of reward stimuli and, at the same time, diminishes responsiveness to aversive stimuli that have potential to interfere with goal pursuit.

Abstract
Weight-loss diets are notorious for their low adherence, which is a barrier to efforts to reduce population rates of overweight and obesity. However, there is some evidence that adherence is better among people on other kinds of diets, such as vegan and gluten free. This study aimed to explore the predictors of dietary adherence across five restrictive dietary patterns (vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten free, and weight loss). This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods among 292 adult community members who were following a restrictive dietary pattern. Personality, mental health, and motivational predictors of adherence were examined. Substantial differences in adherence were found between dietary groups, with vegans and vegetarians being particularly high in adherence and gluten-free and weight-loss dieters being comparably low. Four consistent predictors of adherence across different dietary patterns were supported in both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. Self-efficacy and social identification with one's dietary group positively predicted adherence. Conversely, being motivated in one's dietary choices by mood or by weight control negatively predicted adherence. These findings speak to the importance of social and motivational factors in determining adherence. The results also illustrate the utility of looking beyond weight-loss dieters and virtuous individual traits for insights into how adherence may be improved.

Abstract
Dieting attempts have become popular worldwide. Dieting, however, seems to have both positive and negative health-related consequences. So far, only a few studies have focused on the determinants of dieting in detail. This study explores the association between self-report dieting attempts and intentional weight loss (IWL) during the previous year and several demographic, lifestyle, health, and psychological factors in a cross-sectional study design using data from the representative Finnish Health 2000 Survey. The sample comprised 2147 men and 2378 women, aged 30–69. Information for potential determinants was assembled via health examinations, interviews, and questionnaires. Approximately 24% of the men and 39% of the women reported dieting attempts and 10% of the men and 15% of the women reported IWL. Dieting attempts were associated with younger age, education, BMI, formerly smoking, more favourable values in lifestyle variables, and unfavorable values in serum HDL and triglycerides, a worse sense of coherence, concerns about one’s appearance, and concerns about one’s health. Among men, diabetics and those sleeping ≤6 h a night more frequently reported dieting attempts and those with osteoarthritis reported IWL. Moreover, the gradient between BMI and dieting attempts was significantly stronger in men than in women. Men seem to attempt dieting when they have actual health-related reasons, while such reasons are not so strongly associated with dieting in women. These findings can be used for determining subpopulations with obesity and real weight-loss needs and, alternatively, subpopulations with normal weight unnecessarily attempting dieting.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with microvascular dysfunction. While low-fat diet improves cardiovascular risk, its contributions on microvascular function, independent of weight loss, is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that nitric oxide (NO)-dependent vasodilation in microvessels is improved by low-fat diets designed for weight loss (LFWL) compared to low-fat weight maintenance (LFWM) diet. Obese adults were randomly assigned to either a LFWL diet (n = 11) or LFWM diet (n = 10) for six weeks. Microvessels were obtained from gluteal subcutaneous fat biopsies before and after the intervention for vascular reactivity measurements to acetylcholine (Ach) and flow, with and without L-NAME or indomethacin. Vascular and serum NO and C-reactive protein (CRP) were also measured. LFWL diet increased flow-induced (FID) and ACh-induced dilation (AChID); an effect that was inhibited by L-NAME. Conversely, LFWM diet did not affect FID or AChID. Indomethacin improved FID and AChID in the baseline and this effect was minimized in response to both diets. Serum NO or CRP did not change in response to either diet. In conclusion, LFWL diet improves microvascular reactivity compared to LFWM diet and increased vascular NO contribution to the improved microvascular dilation. These data suggest that weight reduction on low fat diet is critical for microvascular health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many countries are trying to identify strategies to control obesity. Nutrition labeling is a policy that could lead to healthy food choices by providing information to consumers. Calorie labeling, for example, could lead to consumers choosing lower calorie foods. However, its effectiveness has been limited. Recently, physical activity equivalent labeling (i.e., displaying calories in terms of estimated amount of physical activity to burn calories) has been proposed as an alternative to the calorie-only label. The aim of this review was to identify and evaluate the published literature comparing effects on health behavior between physical activity equivalent labeling and calorie-only labeling. METHOD We searched the following databases: Pubmed/medline, Scopus, Web of science, Agris, Cochrane library, Google Scholar. We also searched along with reference lists of included articles. Articles that were published between 1 January 2000 and 31 October 2016 were eligible for inclusion provided they reported on studies that examined the effects of both types of labeling and included at least one outcome of interest. Mean and standard deviations of the included results were combined using a fixed-effect model. The difference in calories purchased between people exposed to physical activity labeling and calorie-only labeling was calculated as weighted mean difference by using a fixed-effect model. RESULT The difference of calories ordered between physical activity label and calorie label groups was not statistically significant (SMD: -0.03; 95% CI: -0.13, 0.07). The difference of calories ordered between physical activity label and calorie label according to real vs unreal (e.g. web-based) condition was 65 Kcal fewer in real-world settings. CONCLUSION Physical activity calorie equivalent labeling in minutes does not significantly reduce calories ordered compared to calorie-only labeling.

Abstract
Various dietary approaches with different caloric content and macronutrient composition have been recommended to treat obesity in adults. Although their safety and efficacy profile has been assessed in numerous randomized clinical trials, reviews and meta-analyses, the characteristics of the optimal dietary weight loss strategy remain controversial. This mini-review will provide general principles and practical recommendations for the dietary management of obesity and will further explore the components of the optimal dietary intervention. To this end, various dietary plans are critically discussed, including low-fat diets, low-carbohydrate diets, high-protein diets, very low-calorie diets with meal replacements, Mediterranean diet, and diets with intermittent energy restriction. As a general principle, the optimal diet to treat obesity should be safe, efficacious, healthy and nutritionally adequate, culturally acceptable and economically affordable, and should ensure long-term compliance and maintenance of weight loss. Setting realistic goals for weight loss and pursuing a balanced dietary plan tailored to individual needs, preferences, and medical conditions, are the key principles to facilitate weight loss in obese patients and most importantly reduce their overall cardiometabolic risk and other obesity-related comorbidities.

Abstract
Despite efforts to promote healthy weight, obesity is at epidemic levels among adults in the US. We examined the prevalence of weight loss attempts among a racially diverse sample of overweight and obese primary care patients (n = 274) based on sociodemographic, clinical and psychological factors, and shared decision-making (SDM) about weight loss/management. This observational study was conducted from December 2015 through January 2017. Data were obtained by self-report via survey. Overall, 64% of participants were attempting to lose weight at the time of survey. No significant differences in current weight loss attempts were found based on racial background, sociodemographic characteristics, or clinical factors. Participants who believed they were obese/overweight (OR = 6.70, 95% CI = 2.86, 15.72, p < 0.0001) or who were ready to lose/manage their weight (OR = 4.50, 95% CI = 1.82, 11.09, p = 0.001) had an increased likelihood of attempting to lose weight. The likelihood of attempting to lose weight increased with greater SDM with providers (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.06, 2.22, p = 0.02). Patient perceptions about their weight, their readiness for weight loss/management, and SDM were associated significantly with weight loss attempts. Obesity is a significant clinical and public health issue. 64% of obese/overweight primary care patients was trying to lose weight. Weight loss attempts did not differ based on race, SES, or clinical factors. Weight loss efforts were associated with perceived obesity status and readiness. Greater shared decision-making was associated with making weight loss efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to identify and examine the effects of weight control behaviors correlated with weight loss in obese individuals who attempted to lose weight within the past year. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, data from 9,461 obese individuals were collected from the fifth and sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2014). Three of nine verified methods of weight control suggested in the survey were selected: diet therapy (reduced food intake), exercise therapy (exercise), and medication therapy (prescribed weight loss medications). Participants were divided into one of seven groups (diet therapy alone; exercise therapy alone; drug therapy alone; combined diet and exercise therapy; combined exercise and drug therapy; combined diet and drug therapy; or combined diet, exercise, and drug therapy). Logistic regression analysis was used to determine whether the group that tried to lose weight in the past year had indeed lost weight compared to the group that did not. RESULTS The odds ratios for weight loss (≥3 but <6 kg vs. ≥6 but <10 kg) for the combined therapies were 2.05 (95% confidence interval, 1.23-3.41) for combined diet and exercise therapy and 5.43 (1.74-16.92) for combined diet, exercise, and drug therapy. CONCLUSION All levels of weight loss were significantly associated with combined diet and exercise therapy. Weight loss ≥6 kg but <10 kg was significantly associated with combined diet and exercise therapy as well as with combined diet, exercise, and medication therapy among individuals who tried to lose weight in the past year.

Abstract
Background Minority and low-income women have higher rates of postpartum weight retention, contributing to increased rates of obesity in these populations. Weight perceptions may be an important factor contributing to the adoption of weight-management behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between weight perceptions and weight-related behaviors among overweight low-income women during postpartum enrolled in a weight loss intervention study. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of the Fresh Start study baseline data among overweight and obese low-income women during postpartum (N = 132). General linear regression models assessed the association between weight perceptions and energy intake, energy expenditure, self-monitoring, and self-regulation. Results Women who perceived themselves to be very overweight had significantly lower self-regulation (β = -4.0, SE = 1.6, p = 0.014) and higher energy expenditure (β = 1.3, SE = 0.7, p = 0.05) compared to women who perceived themselves to be moderately overweight or a little overweight. There were no significant associations between weight perceptions and self-monitoring or energy intake. Conclusions This study found that weight perceptions among these women are important factors to consider for weight loss. Future research should focus on investigating the impact of tailoring interventions to weight perceptions to impact engagement in weight-related behaviors in diverse low-income women during postpartum.

Abstract
With a rise in global incidence of overweight and obesity, the number of patients seeking weight management (WM) advice is likely to increase. Our aim was to explore the prevalence of WM practices and investigate association of WM goals with sociodemographic variables and practices among United Arab Emirates (UAE) adults. An exploratory, cross-sectional research was conducted on 1275 adult males and females, residing in UAE. A structured questionnaire was administered. WM goals to lose/maintain/gain weight were reported in 88.3% participants. WM goals were significantly associated with age, sex, marital status, education, current body weight perception, and medical condition. Out of 21 selected WM practices, popular strategies included increasing physical activity (52.9%), eating less fat (51.1%), consuming fewer calories (43.3%), joining gym (27.5%), skipping meals (26.1%), and consuming natural herbs and teas (20.7%). Visiting dietitian (12.3%) ranked ninth in the order of preference. Males focused on physical activity, gyms, and wellness centers and females on calories counting, dietitian visits, meals replacement, skipping meals, and natural herbs/teas. Married adults reported eating less fat (54.3% versus 47.3%, p = 0.020); singles opted calories counting, gyms, and meals replacement. Frequent referral sources were friends (37.8%) and Internet (32.1%). Most UAE adults had WM goals that were associated with sociodemographic variables and WM practices. Awareness about the ill-effects of unhealthy WM practices and importance of dietitian's consultation are imperative.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with steep discounting of the future and increased food reinforcement. Episodic future thinking (EFT), a type of prospective thinking, has been observed to reduce delay discounting (DD) and improve dietary decision making. In contrast, negative income shock (i.e., abrupt transitions to poverty) has been shown to increase discounting and may worsen dietary decision-making. Scalability of EFT training and protective effects of EFT against simulated negative income shock on DD and demand for food were assessed. In two experiments we showed online-administered EFT reliably reduced DD. Furthermore, EFT reduced DD and demand for fast foods even when challenged by negative income shock. Our findings suggest EFT is a scalable intervention that has implications for improving public health by reducing discounting of the future and demand for high energy dense food.

Abstract
Background Excess adiposity is a risk factor for poorer cancer survival, but there is uncertainty over whether losing weight reduces the risk. We conducted a critical review of the literature examining weight loss and mortality in overweight or obese cancer survivors. Methods We systematically searched PubMed and EMBASE for articles reporting associations between weight loss and mortality (cancer-specific or all-cause) in overweight/obese patients with obesity-related cancers. Where available, data from the same studies on non-overweight patients were compared. Results Five articles describing observational studies in breast cancer survivors were included. Four studies reported a positive association between weight loss and mortality in overweight/obese survivors, and the remaining study observed no significant association. Results were similar for non-overweight survivors. Quality assessment indicated high risk of bias across studies. Conclusions There is currently a lack of observational evidence that weight loss improves survival for overweight and obese cancer survivors. However, the potential for bias in these studies is considerable and the results likely reflect the consequences of disease-related rather than intentional weight loss. There is a need for stronger study designs, incorporating measures of intentionality of weight loss, and extended to other cancers.

Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of personal weight control attempts (weight loss and/or maintenance) worldwide and to identify correlates, personal strategies used and the underlying motives. We included epidemiological/observational studies of adults (≥18 years) reporting prevalence of weight control attempts in the past-year. Seventy-two studies (n = 1,184,942) met eligibility criteria. Results from high quality studies showed that 42% of adults from general populations and 44% of adults from ethnic-minority populations reported trying to lose weight, and 23% of adults from general populations reported trying to maintain weight annually. In general population studies, higher prevalence of weight loss attempts was observed in the decade of 2000-2009 (48.2%), in Europe/Central Asia (61.3%) and in overweight/obese individuals and in women (p < 0.01). Of the 37 strategies (grouped in 10 domains of the Oxford Food and Activity Behaviours Taxonomy) and 12 motives reported for trying to control weight, exercising and dieting (within the energy compensation and restraint domains, respectively) and wellbeing and long-term health were the most prevalent. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review to investigate weight control attempts worldwide. Key strategies and motives were identified which have implications for future public health initiatives on weight control.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to identify psychosocial determinants for maintaining weight loss. METHODS 42 obese individuals who achieved a 12% weight loss before entering a 52-week weight maintenance program were interviewed qualitatively. Psychosocial factors related to weight loss maintenance were identified in two contrasting groups: weight reducers and weight regainers. Groups were defined by health-relevant weight maintenance (additional weight loss > 3% at week 52, n = 9 versus weight gain > 3%, at week 52, n = 20). RESULTS Weight reducers reported structured meal patterns (p = 0.008), no comfort eating (p = 0.016) and less psychosocial stress (p = 0.04) compared to weight regainers. The ability to instrumentalize eating behavior emerged as an important factor (p = 0.007). Nutritional knowledge, motivation or exercise level did not differ between groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Successful weight loss maintenance was associated with an interplay between behavioral, affective and contextual changes. 'Instrumentalization of eating behavior' seems to be an important element in long-term weight maintenance.

Abstract
Background Overweight individuals desire a lower weight than they actually have. Little is known on the extent to which this discrepancy is reduced over time due to adaptation or resignation. The aim of this study is to describe cross-sectional relationships and longitudinal changes in desired body weight and differences between actual and desired body weight according to gender, age and category of body mass index in a large, adult cohort in Tromsø, Norway. Methods Cross-sectional analyses of 8960 men and 9992 women aged 25–69 participating in Tromsø 4 (during 1994–1995), and longitudinal analyses of 3210 men and 3689 women participating in both Tromsø 4 (during 1994–1995) and Tromsø 6 (during 2007–2008). Simple descriptive statistics and linear regression was used to describe actual and desired weight, the difference between them, and how gender and age are related to the changes in actual and desired weight over this 13-year period. Results The difference between actual and desired body weight was largest for the obese and higher among the overweight than the normal weight for both genders. While normal weight men were quite satisfied with their body weight, normal weight women were not. Actual weight increased more than desired weight for all age groups and both genders except the oldest women. The difference between change in actual body weight and change in desired body weight during the 13-year follow-up was significantly larger among men (2.0 kg) than women (1.5 kg) (p < 0.001), and larger among young than older adults (p < 0.001). Adjusting for level of education had no impact on this relationship. Furthermore, the association between age and the difference between change in actual body weight during the 13 years and change in desired body weight in the same period did not differ between men and women and, in gender specific analyses, between subjects with normal weight and those who were overweight or obese at start of follow-up. Conclusion Older people adapt more to weight gain than younger age groups, with clear gender differences. Further studies of longitudinal changes in desired weight are warranted. Abstract
Questionnaires returned from 234 fifth and sixth graders from 24 Girl Scout Troops in the Midwest showed that 29.3% of all girls and 68.7% of those who were dieting thought they were overweight. Most of those who were trying to lose weight were using healthy methods, but a few were using dangerous methods. Very few were unhappy with their weight, shape, and various body parts. Most appeared to be aware of the influence of media on body image and were accepting of a wide range of body shapes and sizes among themselves and their friends.

Abstract
Purpose. To determine whether predictors of fat intake behavior were the same for normal-weight and obese WIC mothers when applying the PRECEDE-PROCEED model and to identify predictors for each group. Design. Proportional stratified convenience sampling. Subjects. Five hundred eighty-one nonpregnant, black and white normal-weight (n = 180) or obese (n = 401) women. Settings. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children in six counties in southern Wisconsin. Measures. The independent variables were predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors. Predisposing factors included beliefs in diet and health, beliefs in diet and body shape, health concerns in food choice, health concerns in nutrition, and eating habits. Enabling factors were cost of food, availability of time to prepare food, and accessibility to purchase food. Reinforcing factors were weight control intentions, sensory appeal, and mood. The dependent variable was fat intake behavior. Structural equation modeling was performed. Results. When controlling for covariates, certain factors affecting fat intake behavior differed between the normal-weight and the obese groups. For the normal-weight group, only reinforcing factors were positively associated with fat intake behavior. For the obese group, reinforcing and enabling, but not predisposing, factors were positively associated with fat intake behavior. Conclusions. Interventions to modify low-income women's fat intake behavior might benefit from targeting behavioral predictors that differ with body size. Messages that emphasize weight control intentions, sensory appeal, and mood are likely to affect both normal-weight and obese women. Information about cost of food, availability of time to prepare food, and accessibility to purchase food is likely to be more effective with obese women.

Abstract
In response to growing alarm about the increase in the prevalence of obesity in the United States, several organizations have recommended that physicians screen their adult patients for this condition and initiate treatment. Screening can be an effective intervention when the condition is grave and prevalent, when an accurate test exists, when effective treatment exists, when the screening program itself does not pose undue risks, and when early detection and treatment improve outcomes. This article critically reviews the evidence supporting these criteria in the case of obesity in adults. It extends previous reviews by assessing the potential impact that uncertainties in the evidence base may have on the effectiveness a screening program. It also examines the feasibility of such a program. We conclude that following the recommendation to screen all adults for obesity is unlikely to improve outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Public policies and clinical guidelines encourage people to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and societal culture, especially among women who tend to idealise thinness. OBJECTIVES To examine trends over time in the prevalence of weight loss attempts in England (1997-2013) and to investigate if the characteristics associated with attempts to lose weight have changed. METHODS Observational study using nationally representative data on adults ⩾18 years who participated in the Health Survey for England (HSE) in 1997 (n=8066), 1998 (n=14 733), 2002 (n=8803), 2012 (n=7132) and 2013 (n=7591), with self-reported attempts to lose weight, cardiovascular disease (CVD) events or medications and measured height, weight and blood pressure. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between weight loss attempts and survey year, socio-demographic variables and health status. RESULTS The age-standardised prevalence of weight loss attempts in the English population increased from 39% in 1997 to 47% in 2013. In 2013, 10% of those with BMI <22; 30% with BMI ⩾22 to <25; 53% with BMI ⩾25 to <30; and 76% with BMI ⩾30 were trying to lose weight. The odds of trying to lose weight increased linearly with each year: odds ratio (OR) 1.021 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.018-1.024) and 1.024 (95% CI 1.008-1.039) after adjustment for changes in BMI and population characteristics. The biggest predictors of weight loss attempts were being in the overweight/obese categories: 5.42 (95% CI 5.05-5.81) and 12.68 (95% CI 11.52-13.96), respectively; and among women: 3.01 (95% CI 2.85-3.18). Having a BMI >25 and a CVD-related condition was associated with only a small increase in the odds of trying to lose weight. There was no evidence that these predictors changed over time. CONCLUSIONS More people are making weight loss attempts each year across all BMI categories. Having a health condition that would improve with weight loss was only very modestly associated with an increase in reported weight loss attempts, which reinforces data that suggests people's prime motivation to lose weight is unrelated to health.

Abstract
Aim The main purpose of this study was to adapt the Restraint Scale (RS) to Portuguese and examine its psychometric properties, specifically its construct validity. Method In this study, 238 normal-weight adults (82% women; Mean age = 36.6, SD = 15.0) participated in an online survey containing measures of Restraint Scale, Three Factor Eating Questionnaire, Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire, and Body Dissatisfaction and Drive for Thinness scales. Results Exploratory factor analyses corroborated the two-factors structure found in previous studies, in particular when three items without clear factorial assignment and low correlation were excluded. A final two-factors version of the RS containing seven items presented a very good fit to the measurement model and good internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis of the 7-items RS in relation to a three-factor model of overeating, dieting and body dissatisfaction measures revealed that the RS was the only restraint measure loading in all three factors. Conclusion This suggests that the 7-items Portuguese version of the RS has good psychometric properties and unique features that lend it appropriate to identify and study unsuccessful chronic dieters.

Abstract
Satisfaction with weight loss (WL) methods has been correlated with the effectiveness, long-term compliance and commitment to weight management. This study explored treatment satisfaction associated with different WL methods among patients with obesity. Cross-sectional data were analysed from the 2012 US National Health and Wellness Survey. Respondents with obesity were categorized as having a WL procedure (e.g., gastric bypass and gastric banding) or using a prescription medication for WL (Sur/Rx), vs. using self-modification WL techniques (e.g., diet, exercise and WL supplements). Overall satisfaction with current WL methods was assessed among the obese and the overweight/obese with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Of the 22 927 respondents with obesity, 58.4% took no current action to lose weight, 2.3% were identified as Sur/Rx and 39.3% were identified as self-modification. The Sur/Rx group reported being very/extremely satisfied more frequently than the self-modification group (39.3% vs. 20.2%, P < 0.001). Similarly, respondents with T2DM that were overweight/obese reported higher satisfaction in the Sur/Rx vs. the self-modification group (46.6% vs. 22.7%, P < 0.001). Satisfaction with WL methods was greater for the Sur/Rx vs. the self-modification group. Data suggest the importance of including bariatric surgery and pharmacotherapy as an integral part in comprehensive WL management.

Abstract
Physical activity and exercise guidelines for weight management call for at least 60 min of daily activity. However, these documents fail to acknowledge that almost no obese adults meet this target and that non-adherence and dropout are even higher among obese individuals than the general population. The reasons for this level of activity avoidance among obese individuals remain poorly understood, and there are no evidence-based methods for addressing the problem. Opinions among exercise scientists are polarized. Some advocate moderate intensity and long duration, whereas others call for high intensity and shorter duration. The latter approach attributes the inactivity and high dropout to limited discretionary time and the slow accrual of visible benefits. However, higher intensity has been associated with non-adherence and dropout, whereas longer duration has not. A conceptual model is then proposed, according to which obesity interacts with intensity, causing physical activity and exercise to be associated with reduced pleasure among obese individuals. We theorize that, in turn, repeated experiences of reduced pleasure lead to avoidance. On this basis, we call for a research agenda aimed at identifying the causes of activity-associated and exercise-associated displeasure in obesity and, by extension, the causes of the extreme physical inactivity among obese individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Weight loss has been shown to influence the health outcomes of type 2 diabetes patients. Providing weight management counselling to diabetes patients may help them adopt appropriate weight management behaviours to lose weight. This study determined the association between self-reported receipt of healthcare professional's weight management counselling and the weight management behaviours of type 2 diabetes patients. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted among 378 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients seeking care from two hospitals. Using a questionnaire, participants' weight management behaviours were assessed as well as receipt of healthcare professional's weight management counselling. RESULTS Half (51.3 %) of the participants reported receipt of healthcare professional's weight management counselling in the last 12 months. Half of the participants ever tried to lose weight. Fewer than half of the participants reported modifying their dietary habits (45.5 %) or engaging in exercise (48.7 %) to lose weight. Those who reported receipt of weight management counselling were more likely to report ever trying to lose weight (AOR 43.0, 95 % CI 23.0-81.6; p < 0.001), modifying their dietary habits (AOR 22.5, 95 % CI 13.0-39.19; p < 0.001), and engaging in exercise (AOR 13.0, 95 % CI 7.8-21.7; p < 0.001) to lose weight. CONCLUSION Participants engaged in varied weight management behaviours. Receipt of health care professionals' weight management counselling was associated to participants' reported participation in weight management behaviours. Weight management counselling from health care professionals may support the adoption of weight management behaviours in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether type of goals and motives underlying females' eating regulation are associated differentially with daily eating behaviours, dependent upon weight and age category. DESIGN 99 late adolescent female dieters (Mage = 18.94) and 98 adult female dieters (Mage = 45.06), 23.6% of which were overweight, completed a questionnaire and a 7-day diary assessment. Descriptive analysis and path analysis were performed to investigate the research questions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Healthy eating behaviours (HEHS), drive for thinness and binge eating symptoms (EDI). RESULTS Appearance-focused and controlled eating regulation were positively related to disordered eating symptoms throughout the week. In contrast, autonomous and health-focused eating regulation were associated positively with healthy eating behaviours and were either related negatively or unrelated to disordered eating symptoms. Mean level differences in motivation and eating behaviours emerged according to age and weight status. However, the examined structural model was similar for late adolescent and adult dieters and only few differences emerged between normal-weight and overweight dieters. CONCLUSION Dieters' type of motivation helps to explain when eating regulation relates to healthy and disordered eating symptoms.

Abstract
Improvements in self-image and mood are often reported as outcomes of obesity interventions. However, they may also concurrently influence weight loss, suggesting a reciprocal effect. Although previously reported for overweight women, such relationships were untested in morbidly obese women whose psychosocial responses to treatment may be different, and health-risks greater. Women (N = 161, Meanage = 42 years) with morbid obesity (MeanBMI = 45.1 kg/m(2)) participated in a 6-month, behaviorally based physical activity and nutrition treatment. Significant within-group improvements in weight-loss behaviors (physical activity and eating), weight, body satisfaction, physical self-concept, and depression were found. After controlling for age, mediation analyses indicated that, as a result of the treatment, weight loss was both an outcome and mediator of improvements in body-areas satisfaction and physical self-concept (reciprocal effects), but not depression. Results replicated findings from women with lower degrees of overweight, and suggested that weight-loss treatments emphasize changes in self-perception.

Abstract
RATIONALE When ad libitum-fed (AL) rats undergo cocaine place preference conditioning (CPP) but are switched to food restriction (FR) for testing, CPP is enhanced and preference scores correlate with phosphorylation of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor GluA1 at Ser845 in nucleus accumbens (NAc) core. OBJECTIVES The present study tested whether a similar association exists in AL rats and whether an inhibitor of Ca(2+)-permeable AMPARs blocks CPP expression in either diet group. MATERIALS AND METHODS In experiments 1-3, AL rats were conditioned with cocaine (12.0 mg/kg, i.p.). Three weeks later, CPP was tested daily and brains were harvested after the fifth test. Western analyses were used to probe for levels of AMPA receptors in NAc. In experiment 4, AL rats were conditioned, half were switched to FR for testing, and half in each diet group received NAc core microinjection of 1-naphthylacetyl spermine (NASPM (NASPM) (25.0 μg) prior to each test. RESULTS In experiment 1, CPP expression in AL rats was associated with elevated pSer845-GluA1, GluA1, and GluA2 in NAc. In experiment 2, the correlation between pSer845-GluA1 and CPP was localized to NAc core. In experiment 3, pSer845-GluA1 following a CPP test was higher in NAc synaptic membranes of FR relative to AL rats. In experiment 4, NASPM blocked CPP expression in both diet groups. CONCLUSIONS Results support a scheme in which pSer845-GluA1 in NAc core underlies expression of cocaine CPP and does so by stabilizing or trafficking Ca(2+)-permeable AMPARs to the synaptic membrane. The more robust CPP of FR rats may result from upregulation of stimulus-induced pSer845-GluA1.

Abstract
Most health decision-making models posit that deciding to engage in a health behavior involves forming a behavioral intention which then leads to actual behavior. However, behavioral intentions and actual behavior may not be functionally equivalent. Two studies examined whether decision-making factors predicting dietary behaviors were the same as or distinct from those predicting intentions. Actual dietary behavior was proximally predicted by affective associations with the behavior. By contrast, behavioral intentions were predicted by cognitive beliefs about behaviors, with no contribution of affective associations. This dissociation has implications for understanding individual regulation of health behaviors and for behavior change interventions.

Abstract
A number of weight loss-related reality television programs chronicle the weight loss experience of obese individuals in a competitive context. Although highly popular, such shows may misrepresent the behavior change necessary to achieve substantial weight loss. A systematic, quantitative content analysis of Seasons 10-13 (n = 66 episodes) of The Biggest Loser was conducted to determine the amount of time and number of instances that diet, physical activity, or other weight management strategies were presented. The average episode was 78.8 ± 15.7 min in length. Approximately 33.3% of an episode, representing 1,121 segments, portrayed behavioral weight management-related content. Within the episode time devoted to weight management content, 85.2% was related to physical activity, 13.5% to diet, and 1.2% to other. Recent seasons of The Biggest Loser suggest that substantial weight loss is achieved primarily through physical activity, with little emphasis on modifying diet and eating behavior. Although physical activity can impart substantial metabolic health benefits, it may be difficult to create enough of an energy deficit to induce significant weight loss in the real world. Future studies should examine the weight loss attitudes and behaviors of obese individuals and health professionals after exposure to reality television shows focused on weight loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Visually attending to unhealthy food creates a desire to consume the food. To resist the temptation people have to employ self-regulation strategies, such as visual avoidance. Past research has shown that self-regulatory skills develop throughout childhood and adolescence, suggesting adults' superior self-regulation skills compared to children. METHODS This study employed a novel method to investigate self-regulatory skills. Children and adults' initial (bottom-up) and maintained (top-down) visual attention to simultaneously presented healthy and unhealthy food were examined in an eye-tracking paradigm. RESULTS Results showed that both children and adults initially attended most to the unhealthy food. Subsequently, adults self-regulated their visual attention away from the unhealthy food. Despite the children's high self-reported attempts to eat healthily and importance of eating healthily, children did not self-regulate visual attention away from unhealthy food. Children remained influenced by the attention-driven desire to consume the unhealthy food whereas adults visually attended more strongly to the healthy food thereby avoiding the desire to consume the unhealthy option. CONCLUSIONS The findings emphasize the necessity of improving children's self-regulatory skills to support their desire to remain healthy and to protect children from the influences of the obesogenic environment.

Abstract
Physiological mechanisms promote weight gain after famine. Because eating disorders, obesity, and dieting limit food intake, they are famine-like experiences. The development of the concept of meeting an ideal weight was the beginning of increasing obesity. Weight stigma, the perception of being fat, lack of understanding of normal growth and development, and increased concern about obesity on the part of health providers, parents, and caregivers have reinforced each other to promote dieting. Because weight suppression and disinhibition provoke long-term weight increase, dieting is a major factor producing the obesity epidemic. The integrated eating disorder-obesity theory included in this article emphasizes that, contrary to dieters, lifetime weight maintainers depend on physiological processes to control weight and experience minimal weight change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Replacing added sugars in beverages and foods with low-calorie sweeteners (LCSs) is one strategy to reduce calories and manage body weight. There are few studies on LCS consumption by product category and by consumer socio-demographic status. SUBJECTS/METHODS Data for a representative sample of 22 231 adults were obtained from five cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2008 NHANES). A single 24-h recall was used to identify consumers of LCS beverages, foods and tabletop sweeteners. Time-trend analyses were conducted for total LCS consumption and for LCS beverages. RESULTS Approximately 30% of US adults consumed some type of LCS, with 19.5% consuming LCS beverages, 11.4% consuming tabletop LCS and 4.6% consuming LCS foods. LCS consumption by product category peaked at different ages, with older adults more likely to consume tabletop LCS and LCS foods. In age-adjusted analyses, LCS consumers in every product category were more likely to be women, 45-65 years old, non-Hispanic whites, US-born adults, college graduates and with higher household incomes. Predictors of LCS consumption were not altered upon adjustment for body mass index and diabetes status. LCS consumption from all sources and from LCS beverages increased between 1999 and 2008. CONCLUSIONS LCS use was more common among populations with a lower burden of obesity and related chronic disease, specifically, non-Hispanic whites and those with more education/higher incomes. The reasons for this observed paradox are complex and merit additional research.

Abstract
PURPOSE Many adults are dissatisfied with their body, regardless of their weight, and weight loss is commonly perceived as an effective solution to this dissatisfaction. The main purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for wanting to modify one's bodily appearance (shape and weight), and to compare these reasons by sex, age, and weight group. METHODS The sample consisted of 796 French-speaking Canadian adults (100 men, 696 women; M age = 27.00 years, SD = 7.88, range 18-64; M body mass index = 24.99 kg/m(2), SD = 6.37, range 12.6-66.5 kg/m(2)) who were asked online whether or not they wanted to change their appearance and if so, why. Answers were subjected to a content analysis wherein recurrent themes were grouped and labeled. RESULTS Most participants (83.2%) wanted to change their appearance. Women, participants with a higher BMI, and older participants were significantly more likely to report this desire. The three most frequently evoked reasons were body dissatisfaction, well-being, and health/shape. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that body dissatisfaction constitutes the primary motive for change for both men and women of all ages, especially for those who are of healthy weight or underweight. Women and younger adults seem to be under the impression that in changing their appearance they will be more comfortable in their own skin. Men, older adults, and overweight adults, on the other hand, are more preoccupied by their health/shape and seldom relate their appearance to their psychological balance.
