Abstract
Hyperuricemia, a major worldwide burden on public hygiene, is closely connected with dietary habits. However, few studies have evaluated the association of dietary diversity with hyperuricemia. To preliminarily reveal the status of a diversified diet in preventing hyperuricemia based on a neighborhood-based, massive-scale cohort in China, a total of 43,493 participants aged 20-74 years old, with no history of hyperuricemia at baseline, were enrolled in the research from April 2016 to December 2019. The Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was utilized to evaluate the dietary variety and split the participants into the low-, medium-, and high-DDS groups. Information on participants was connected to regional health information systems that acquired data on hyperuricemia instances up to 28 February 2023. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed by Cox proportional hazards models. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were implemented to analyze dose-response correlation. A total of 1460 individuals with newly diagnosed hyperuricemia were observed over a median follow-up period of 5.59 years. Compared to the low-DDS group, HRs for the medium- and high-DDS groups were 0.87 (95% CI 0.76-0.99) and 0.80 (95% CI 0.70-0.91) in the fully adjusted model, respectively. The risk of hyperuricemia incidence was reduced by 5% for each 1 unit of DDS increase. A linear correlation of DDS with hyperuricemia emerged and further revealed that the intake of 8-10 broad categories of food could decrease the incidence of hyperuricemia. Our results validate the dietary principle of "food diversification" recommended in guidelines. Conclusions should be applied with caution considering the paucity of related evidence in additional nations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenic causes of primary gout include urate overproduction and/or renal or extra-renal urate underexcretion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of gout subtypes with the response to low-purine diet (LPD). METHODS This is a single-center prospective clinical study. Gout patients visiting from 2019 to 2022, from Shandong Gout Clinic Center at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, China, assigned to three groups according to clinical subtypes, were enrolled and all treated with 2-week low-purine diet. General characteristics, serum uric acid (sUA) and other clinical biochemical variables before and after the diet were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 626 gout patients (age 41.20 ± 13.41 years, male 98.0%) were included. Of these, 69 (11.0%) were overproduction type, 428 (68.37%) were underexcretion type, and 129 (20.61%) were combined type. Overall, there was a substantial decrease in sUA after a 2-week LPD (p < 0.001). In addition, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum triglycerides (TG), serum total cholesterol (TC), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr) levels were lower than those at baseline (p < 0.05). On the other hand, there were significant differences in the reduction of sUA among different types, the rank order being overproduction type (- 88.81 ± 63.01 μmol/L) > combined type (- 65.22 ± 44.13 μmol/L) > underexcretion type (- 57.32 ± 61.19 μmol/L). After adjusting for age, BMI and baseline sUA and eGFR, there were still significant differences in the decline of serum uric acid among different types. Higher baseline sUA (95%CI - 0.285, - 0.191; p < 0.001) and BUN (95%CI - 6.751, - 0.602; p < 0.001) were correlated with greater decrease of sUA. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the protective role of low-purine diet on sUA levels in gout patients, especially overproduction type. Furthermore, LPD could exert a beneficial effect on gout patients' blood pressure, BMI, blood lipid, BUN and Scr levels. Trial registration Registered with ChiCTR, No. ChiCTR1900022981 at 06/05/2019.

Abstract
Excessive visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a significant risk factor for various diseases. Diet plays a crucial role in controlling obesity. This study examined the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and VAT in 9027 adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Linear regression models were used to explore this association, with subgroup analyses included. Results showed a significant inverse association between DASH scores and VAT area, even after adjusting for covariates (β = -2.18, 95% CI: -3.10, -1.27). Participants in the highest DASH score tertile had significantly lower VAT areas compared to those in the lowest tertile (β = -7.2, 95% CI: -10.40, -4.01). This inverse association was most pronounced in middle-aged participants. Further prospective cohort studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

Abstract
The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) is a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, and its association with renal outcomes remains unclear. In the REasons for Geographic and Racial Disparities in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort, diet data were collected at baseline using food frequency questionnaires. Modified Poisson regression was used to examine the association of MIND diet with incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). In the REGARDS stroke case-cohort, 357 metabolites were measured in baseline plasma. Weighted linear regression was used to test associations between MIND diet and metabolites. Weighted logistic regression was used to test associations between MIND-associated metabolites and incident CKD. Mediation analyses were conducted to determine whether metabolites mediated the relationship between MIND diet and CKD. A higher MIND diet score was associated with a decreased risk of incident CKD (risk ratio 0.90, 95% CI (0.86-0.94); p = 2.03 × 10-7). Fifty-seven metabolites were associated with MIND diet (p < 3 × 10-4). Guanosine was found to mediate the relationship between MIND diet and incident CKD (odds ratio for indirect effects 0.93, 95% CI (0.88-0.97); p < 0.05). These findings suggest a role of the MIND diet in renal outcomes.

Abstract
Background The association between atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and hyperuricemia remains indistinct. This study was aimed to examine the relationship between AIP and hyperuricemia among the middle-aged and the elderly Chinese population. Methods Datasets were retrieved from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) survey conducted in 2011 and 2015. 13,021 participants in the CHARLS in 2011 and 7,017 participants involved both in 2011 and 2015 were included, respectively. The measurement of AIP and hyperuricemia was based on the test of fasting blood. Association between AIP and hyperuricemia was assessed by logistic regression, and the nonlinear association was examined by restricted cubic splines (RCS). The cutoff point of AIP was calculated using receiver operator curve (ROC). 1 : 1 propensity score matching (PSM) was adopted to further explore the relationship between AIP and hyperuricemia. Results In the section of a cross-sectional study, a positive association between AIP and hyperuricemia was found. The odds ratios (ORs) of hyperuricemia were 1.00 (reference), 1.52 (1.10-2.10), 1.80 (1.31-2.47), and 3.81 (2.84-5.11). Nonlinear association was not detected using RCS analysis. There were 664 hyperuricemia cases during the four years follow-up. The hyperuricemia prevalence was 9.5%. In the fully adjusted longitudinal analysis, the ORs for hyperuricemia across the quartiles of AIP were 1.00 (reference), 1.00 (0.74-1.37), 1.59 (1.20-2.11), and 2.55 (1.94-3.35), respectively. In the longitudinal analysis after PSM, the OR of hyperuricemia were 1.91 (1.45, 2.51) and 1.92 (1.45, 2.54) in the univariate and multivariate model, respectively. Conclusion AIP can predict the prevalence of hyperuricemia in the Chinese middle-aged and elderly population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although risk factors for mortality in individuals with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been reported, little is known regarding the association between the comprehensive cardiovascular health (CVH) index assessed by life's essential 8 (LE8) and the risk of mortality. HYPOTHESIS The aim of this study was to evaluate the CVH assessed by LE8 and risk of mortality in individuals with CVD. METHODS A total of 1391 participants with CVD diagnosed before 2014 from the Kailuan cohort were included in the analysis. The CVH score ranged from 0 to 100 was assessed using the LE8 metrics (diet quality, physical activity, sleep health, cigarette smoking, body mass index, lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure). Cox regression model was used to estimate the association between the CVH score and risk of all-cause mortality. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 6.1 ± 1.5 years, 229 deaths occurred. The hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 0.57 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.38, 0.84) in the highest quartiles compared with the lowest quartiles of CVH scores and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95) for each 10 points increment in CVH scores (ptrend = .009), after adjustment for age, sex, CVD duration, social-economic status, alcohol consumption, inflammation, medicine use, and kidney function. We did not observe significant interactions between the CVH scores and age, sex, and duration of CVD diagnosis (pinteraction > .05 for all). CONCLUSIONS The CVH assessed by the LE8 metrics was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in individuals with CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased serum urate (SU) and hyperuricemia (HU) are associated with chronic noncommunicable diseases and mortality. SU concentrations are affected by several factors, including diet, and are expected to rise with age. We investigated whether the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet alter this trend. OBJECTIVE The objective was to assess whether adherence to the DASH diet predicts a longitudinal change in SU concentrations and risk of HU in 8 y of follow-up. METHODS Longitudinal analyses using baseline (2008-2010, aged 35-74 y), second (2012-2014), and third (2016-2018) visits data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). The inclusion criteria were having complete food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and urinary sodium measurement, in addition to having SU measurement at the 1st visit and at least 1 of the 2 follow-up visits. For the HU incidence analyses, participants had also to be free from HU at baseline. The final samples included 12575 individuals for the SU change analyses and 10549 for the HU incidence analyses. Adherence to DASH diet was assessed as continuous value. HU was defined as SU>6.8 mg/dL and/or urate-lowering therapy use. Mixed-effect linear and Poisson regressions (incidence rate ratio [IRR] and 95% confidence interval [CI]) were used in the analyses, adjusted for confounders. RESULTS The mean age was 51.4 (8.7) y, and 55.4% were females. SU means (standard deviation) were 5.4 (1.4) at 1st visit, 5.2 (1.4) at 2nd visit, and 5.1(1.3) mg/dL at 3rd visit. The HU incidence rate was 8.87 per 1000 person-y. Each additional point in adherence to the DASH diet accelerated SU decline (P< 0.01) and lowered the incidence of HU by 4.3% (IRR: 0.957; 95% CI: 0.938,0.977) in adjusted model. CONCLUSION The present study findings reinforce the importance of encouraging the DASH diet as a healthy dietary pattern to control and reduce the SU concentrations and risk of HU.

Abstract
Objective The aim of our study was to investigate whether the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) correlated with gout in American adults. Method The study used data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with 27,710 adults participating. Initially, multivariable analysis was performed, with controls for covariates, to assess the link of DII and gout. Then, restricted cubic splines (RCS) were applied to model the nonlinear relationship of DII and gout. Furthermore, propensity score matching (PSM) as a further study of potential relationships was established. Eventually, subgroup analysis was performed. Result Participants within the highest DII quartile would be more susceptible to increased risk of gout in the univariate regression model (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 1.31, CI: 1.05-1.63). Additionally, a positive correlation was detected between gout risk and DII after adjusting on drinking, smoking, gender, race, age, and BMI. Based on RCS analysis, we observed that the risk of gout raised sharply as DII values increased, then flattened, and increased sharply again when the DII was greater than approximately 2.5. After performing the PSM, it was observed that DII correlated in a positive way to the presence of gout on a fully adjusted multivariable model. Subgroup analysis revealed that the link of DII and gout showed no statistical significance in females, blacks, Mexicans, nor in the population that smoked. Conclusion Greater degrees of pro-inflammation correlate with a higher risk of gout and might be a predisposing factor for gout. Hence, tactics fostering an anti-inflammatory diet for preventing and improving gout in adults should be regarded.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia is a common condition that can lead to gout and other related diseases. It has been suggested that Inflammatory factors play important role in the development and progression of hyperuricemia. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) enables the assessment of the inflammatory potential of an individual's diet. This study aimed to investigate the association between DII and hyperuricemia. Methods This study was performed based on a cross-sectional dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Participants aged 18 years and above with dietary intake and serum uric acid level information were included. DII scores were calculated using dietary intake data, based on which participants were categorized into tertiles. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was adopted to investigate the association between DII and hyperuricemia. Results Among a total of 31,781 participants in the analysis, 5,491 had hyperuricemia. After adjusting confounding factors, the odds of hyperuricemia are significantly higher in the second (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.07-1.29) and third tertiles (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.19-1.44) relative to the first one. Conclusion This study suggested that diet with higher inflammatory potential, as measured by DII, is associated with increased hyperuricemia risk. These findings indicated that dietary modification may be a potential approach for hyperuricemia's prevention and control.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the association of milk intake with sleep disorders and their specific indicators. The current study included 768 adults aged 28-95 from Wenling, China. Milk intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire with ten food items, while sleep disorders were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), with higher scores indicating poorer sleep. The participants were divided into two groups according to the average intake of milk per week: rare intake (≤62.5 mL/week) and regular intake (>62.5 mL/week). Primary measurements were multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prevalence of sleep disorders concerning regular milk intake compared with rare intake. In secondary analyses, linear regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of milk intake on sleep disorders and their specific dimensions. Regular intake of milk did not have a significant association with sleep disorders compared with rare intake (adjusted OR: 0.72, 95%; CI: 0.51, 1.03), but this association was found to be pronounced with sleep disturbances (OR: 0.49, 95%; CI: 0.28, 0.87). Increased intake of milk was significantly associated with the lower scores of PSQI for sleep quality (β: -0.045, 95%; CI: -0.083, -0.007) and sleep disturbances (β: -0.059, 95%; CI: -0.090, -0.029), respectively. When stratified by age and gender, the benefits of milk intake for sleep disorders and sleep disturbances were more significant in older adults (≥65) and men than in younger persons and women. In summary, regular milk intake benefits sleep quality, which may contribute to nutritional psychiatric support for prevention against sleep disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data are lacking regarding cardiovascular health (CVH) with Life's Essential 8 approach and future stroke risk. We sought to elucidate whether the CVH score constructed by the Life's Essential 8 metrics predicted stroke risk in 2 Chinese ongoing cohorts. METHODS This included 41 043 participants of the Kailuan I study and 27 842 participants of the Kailuan II study who were free of cardiovascular disease or cancer in 2014. CVH score (ranged from 0 to 100) was assessed using the Life's Essential 8 metrics (body mass index, cigarette smoking, diet quality, physical activity, sleep health, lipid, blood glucose, and blood pressure). A composite of incident stroke events (ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke) was identified via review of medical records. The follow-up period was calculated from the finishing date of the 2014 survey to either the date of stroke occurrence, death, loss to follow-up, or the end of follow-up (December 31, 2020). We also examined the longitudinal association between the CVH score and arterial stiffness status, as assessed by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, in 25 922 participants free of cardiovascular disease during the follow-up. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the association between CVH, based on the 2010 American Heart Association recommendation, and stroke integrating the results of current study and previous studies. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 5.65 years (interquartile range, 5.20-6.09), a total of 1750 incident stroke events were identified in the pooled Kailuan study. The pooled hazard ratios were 0.33 (95% CI, 0.20-0.54) for ideal versus poor health category of CVH (Ptrend<0.0001). Higher CVH scores were also associated with lower brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity values at baseline and slower increments of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity during follow-up (Ptrend≤0.001 for both). Arterial stiffness mediated 9.07% (95% CI, 5.83%-15.0%) of the total association between CVH and incident stroke. The pooled hazard ratio comparing 2 extreme CVH categories for stroke was 0.45 (95% CI, 0.35-0.59) when including 10 published studies and the current study. CONCLUSIONS The CVH score as assessed by the Life's Essential 8 metrics significantly predicted future stroke risk and arterial stiffness status.

Abstract
Background: Studies investigating the effects of dietary intake on serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the associations between various dietary patterns and SUA levels as well as hyperuricemia. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases for relevant articles examining the association between dietary intake and SUA levels and/or hyperuricemia published until March 2023. Dietary intake patterns were classified into plant-based, animal-based, and mixed dietary patterns based on predominant foods. The pooled effect sizes of eligible studies and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects models. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's test. Results: We included 41 studies, comprising 359 317 participants, that investigated the effects of dietary patterns on SUA levels (n = 25) and hyperuricemia (n = 19). Our findings suggested that a plant-based dietary pattern was associated with decreased SUA levels in both interventional (standard mean difference: -0.24 mg dL-1, 95% CI: -0.42, -0.06; I2 = 61.4%) and observational studies (odds ratio (OR): 0.92, 95% CI: 0.89, 0.95, I2 = 91.1%); this association was stronger in men (OR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.35, 0.58; I2 = 0). We observed that plant- and animal-based dietary patterns were associated with a reduced risk (OR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.83, I2 = 93.3%) and an increased risk (OR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.59, I2 = 88.4%) of hyperuricemia, respectively. Conclusions: Collectively, a plant-based dietary pattern is negatively associated with SUA levels and hyperuricemia. Therefore, a plant-based dietary pattern should be recommended for the management of SUA levels and the prevention of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Introduction: the objective of our study was to systematically review the current literature and perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of the level of adherence to the DASH diet on blood pressure. Methods: The identification of relevant studies, data extraction and critical appraisal of the included studies were performed independently by two reviewers. A random-effects model was employed to synthesize the available evidence using the standardized mean difference (SMD) as the appropriate effect size. Results: A total of 37 and 29 articles were included in the qualitative and quantitative analysis, respectively. The pooled effect for systolic blood pressure was SMD = -0.18 (95%CI: -0.32 to -0.04; I2 = 94%; PI: -0.93 to 0.57) and for diastolic blood pressure it was SMD = -0.13 (95%CI: -0.19 to -0.06; I2 = 94%; PI: -0.42 to 0.17). Conclusions: Our findings showed that greater adherence to the DASH diet has a beneficial effect on blood pressure compared to the lowest adherence. Increased compliance with DASH diet recommendations might also have a positive effect on cardiometabolic factors and overall health status. Future studies should aim to standardize the tools of adherence to the DASH diet and utilize rigorous study designs to establish a clearer understanding of the potential benefits of the level of adherence to the DASH diet in blood pressure management.

Interactions Between Genetic Risk and Diet Influencing Risk of Incident Female Gout: Discovery and Replication Analysis of Four Prospective Cohorts. Arthritis Rheumatol 2023; 75:1028-1038. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether the cross-sectional gene-diet interaction for prevalent hyperuricemia among women translates prospectively to risk of incident female gout. METHODS We analyzed the interaction between genetic predisposition and adherence to a healthy dietary pattern (i.e., Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension [DASH] score) on risk of incident female gout in 18,244 women from Nurses' Health Study (NHS; discovery) and 136,786 women from 3 additional prospective female cohorts from the US and UK (replication). Genetic risk score (GRS) was calculated from 114 urate-associated loci. RESULTS In the NHS and replication cohorts, association between diet and gout risk was larger and stronger among women with higher genetic risk. In all cohorts combined, compared to women with an unhealthy DASH score (less than the mean score), multivariable relative risk (RR) for incident gout among women with a healthy DASH score (greater than/equal to the mean score) was 0.67 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.60-0.76) among higher GRS (greater than/equal to the mean score) and 0.91 (0.78-1.05) among lower GRS (P for multiplicative interaction = 0.001); multivariable RR for higher versus lower GRS was 2.03 (95% CI 1.80-2.29) and 1.50 (95% CI 1.31-1.71) among unhealthy and healthy DASH score groups, respectively. Additive interaction was also significant, in both the discovery and replication cohorts (P < 0.001), with 51% of the excess risk attributable to the additive gene-diet interaction in all cohorts combined. CONCLUSION The deleterious effect of genetic predisposition on risk of incident female gout was more pronounced among women with unhealthy diets, with nearly half the excess risk attributable to this gene-diet interaction. These data elucidate the important synergy of genetics and diet for female gout development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatology researchers often categorize continuous predictor variables. We aimed to show how this practice may alter results from observational studies in rheumatology. METHODS We conducted and compared the results of two analyses of the association between our predictor variable (percentage change in body mass index [BMI] from baseline to four years) and two outcome variable domains of structure and pain in knee and hip osteoarthritis. These two outcome variable domains covered 26 different outcomes for knee and hip combined. In the first analysis (categorical analysis), percentage change in BMI was categorized as ≥ 5% decrease in BMI, < 5% change in BMI, and ≥ 5% increase in BMI, while in the second analysis (continuous analysis), it was left as a continuous variable. In both analyses (categorical and continuous), we used generalized estimating equations with a logistic link function to investigate the association between the percentage change in BMI and the outcomes. RESULTS For eight of the 26 investigated outcomes (31%), the results from the categorical analyses were different from the results from the continuous analyses. These differences were of three types: 1) for six of these eight outcomes, while the continuous analyses revealed associations in both directions (i.e., a decrease in BMI had one effect, while an increase in BMI had the opposite effect), the categorical analyses showed associations only in one direction of BMI change, not both; 2) for another one of these eight outcomes, the categorical analyses suggested an association with change in BMI, while this association was not shown in the continuous analyses (this is potentially a false positive association); 3) for the last of the eight outcomes, the continuous analyses suggested an association of change in BMI, while this association was not shown in the categorical analyses (this is potentially a false negative association). CONCLUSIONS Categorization of continuous predictor variables alters the results of analyses and could lead to different conclusions; therefore, researchers in rheumatology should avoid it.

Abstract
To explore the relationship between Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and serum uric acid (SUA) levels among the Chinese adult population, and verify the mediating effect of BMI between DASH diet and SUA levels. A total of 1125 adults were investigated using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. SUA levels were determined by uricase colorimetry. The total DASH score ranged from 9 to 72. The relationship between the DASH diet and SUA levels was examined by multiple adjusted regression analysis. Method of Bootstrap was used to test the mediation effect of BMI in the correlation of the DASH diet and SUA levels. After multivariable adjustment, there was a significant linear relationship between the DASH diet and SUA (P < 0.001). Compared with the lowest group, SUA of participants in group of highest DASH diet score decreased by 34.907 (95% CI - 52.227, - 17.588; P trend < 0.001) μmol/L. The association between the DASH diet scores and SUA levels was partly mediated by BMI (- 0.26, Bootstrap 95% CI - 0.49, - 0.07), with 10.53% of the total effect being mediated. Adopting the DASH diet might be helpful in reducing SUA level, and the effect might be partly mediated by BMI.

Abstract
Background Certain foods and food groups could positively or negatively impact serum uric acid (SUA) levels. However, evidence on the holistic dietary strategy to prevent and control hyperuricemia (HUA) development remains limited. Objective The aim of this research work was to explore the association of dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet with SUA levels and odds of HUA among Chinese adults. Methods This research premise included 66,427 Chinese adults aged 18 and above who were part of the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance in 2015. Dietary consumptions were assessed via the household condiment weighing approach and a three-day, 24-hour dietary recall. Total fat, saturated fat, calcium, protein, potassium, cholesterol, magnesium, fiber, and sodium were all adopted to calculate the DASH score (score range, 0–9). The associations of DASH score with SUA levels and odds of HUA were evaluated using multiple linear and logistic regression models, respectively. Results We established that a higher DASH score was linked with a lower SUA levels (β = − 0.11; 95% CI: − 0.12, − 0.1; p < 0.001) and odds of HUA (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.87; p < 0.001) after adjustment for age, sex, ethnicity, education status, marital status, health behaviours and health factors. The association of the DASH diet with odds of HUA was stronger among men (p-interaction = 0.009), non-Han Chinese (p-interaction< 0.001) as well as rural residents (p-interaction< 0.001). Conclusions Our results illustrate that the DASH diet was remarkably negatively with SUA levels and odds of HUA in the Chinese adult population. Abstract
Epidemiological studies using conventional statistical methods have reported an association between individual metal exposure and hyperuricemia (HUA). There is also evidence that diet may influence HUA development, although the available data are inconsistent. We therefore used an elastic net regression (ENR) model to screen the usefulness of various environmental and dietary factors as predictors of HUA in a large sample cohort. This study included 6217 subjects drawn from the Shenzhen Aging Related Disorder Cohort. We obtained information on the subjects' dietary habits via face-to-face interviews and used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure the urinary concentrations of 24 metals to which elderly persons in large urban areas may be exposed. An elastic net regression (ENR) model was generated to screen the utility of the metals and dietary factors as predictors of HUA, and we demonstrated the superiority of the ENR model by comparing it to a traditional logistic regression model. The identified predictors were used to create a clinically usable nomogram for identifying patients at risk of developing HUA. The area under curve (AUC) value of the final model was 0.692 for the training set and 0.706 for the test set. Important predictors of HUA were Zn, As, V, and Fe as well as consumption of wheat, beans, and rice; the corresponding estimated odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were 1.091 (0.932,1.251), 1.190 (1.093,1.286), 0.924 (0.793,1.055), 0.704 (0.626,0.781), 0.998 (0.996,1.001), 0.993 (0.989,0.998), and 1.001 (0.998,1.002), respectively. In contrast to previous studies, we found that both urinary metal concentrations and dietary habits are important for predicting HUA risk. Exposure to specific metals and consumption of specific foods were identified as important predictors of HUA, indicating that the incidence of this disease could be reduced by reducing exposure to these metals and promoting improved dietary habits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hyperuricemia has become the second most common metabolic disease in China after diabetes, and the disease burden is not optimistic. METHODS We used the method of retrospective cohort studies, a baseline survey completed from January to September 2017, and a follow-up survey completed from March to September 2019. A group of 2992 steelworkers was used as the study population. Three models of Logistic regression, CNN, and XG Boost were established to predict HUA incidence in steelworkers, respectively. The predictive effects of the three models were evaluated in terms of discrimination, calibration, and clinical applicability. RESULTS The training set results show that the accuracy of the Logistic regression, CNN, and XG Boost models was 84.4, 86.8, and 86.6, sensitivity was 68.4, 72.3, and 81.5, specificity was 82.0, 85.7, and 86.8, the area under the ROC curve was 0.734, 0.724, and 0.806, and Brier score was 0.121, 0.194, and 0.095, respectively. The XG Boost model effect evaluation index was better than the other two models, and similar results were obtained in the validation set. In terms of clinical applicability, the XG Boost model had higher clinical applicability than the Logistic regression and CNN models. CONCLUSION The prediction effect of the XG Boost model was better than the CNN and Logistic regression models and was suitable for the prediction of HUA onset risk in steelworkers.

Abstract
Diet is a major determinant of hyperuricemia, but little is known about the association between diet and hyperuricemia in less-developed multiethnic regions (LMERs). This study aimed to assess the hypothesis that dietary patterns (including 2 a-priori and 3 a posteriori dietary patterns) are associated with hyperuricemia in LMERs. The 2 a priori dietary patterns were the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and the alternative Mediterranean diet (aMED). We derived 3 a posteriori dietary patterns from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort study by principal component factor analysis. Given that those dietary patterns had high geographic discrimination, they were named the Sichuan Basin (economically developed industrial region), Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (agricultural region), and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (nomadic region) dietary pattern, respectively. We performed a logistic regression model to investigate associations between dietary patterns and hyperuricemia with potential confounders identified by the directed acyclic graph. Comparing the highest with the lowest quintiles, the Sichuan Basin dietary pattern was positively associated with hyperuricemia, whereas the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau dietary pattern showed an inverse association with hyperuricemia. For the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau dietary pattern, DASH, or aMED, our results did not show a significant association with hyperuricemia. The results were robust among stratified analyses and different analyzing strategies. The dietary patterns showed great diversity in Southwest China. Both DASH and aMED, which many studies widely recommended, did not show expected beneficial effects on preventing hyperuricemia. However, the plant-based protein dietary pattern in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau showed a beneficial association with the risk of hyperuricemia, which can provide insights for dietary guidance in LMERs.

Genetic Risk, Adherence to a Healthy Lifestyle, and Hyperuricemia: The TCLSIH Cohort Study. Am J Med 2023; 136:476-483.e5. Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetic factors have been associated with hyperuricemia in large studies, but the extent to which this can be offset by a healthy lifestyle is unknown. This study aimed to examine whether healthy lifestyle could reduce hyperuricemia risk among individuals with different genetic profiles. METHODS We defined a lifestyle score using body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activities, and diets in 2796 unrelated individuals from the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort study. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) were constructed based on uric acid loci. Associations of combined lifestyle factors and genetic risk and incident hyperuricemia were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression. RESULTS Of 2796 individuals, 747 participants (26.7%) developed hyperuricemia. Genetic risk and lifestyle were predictors of incident events, and they showed an interaction for the outcome. Compared with high PRS, low PRS reduced risk of incident hyperuricemia by 40%, and compared with unhealthy lifestyle, healthy lifestyle reduced risk of incident hyperuricemia by 41%. Compared with unhealthy lifestyle and high genetic risk, adherence to healthy lifestyle was associated with a 68% (95% confidence interval, 44%-81%) lower risk of hyperuricemia among those at a low genetic risk. CONCLUSIONS In this prospective cohort study, we observed an interaction between genetics and lifestyle and the risk of hyperuricemia. The public health implication is that a healthy lifestyle is important for hyperuricemia prevention, especially for individuals with high genetic risk scores.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gout is the most frequent inflammatory joint disease in the western world and has a proven genetic background. Additionally, lifestyle factors, such as increasing life expectation and standard of living, sufficient or excess nutrition and a growing prevalence of obesity in the population as well as e.g. alcohol consumption, contribute to the rising incidence of hyperuricemia and gout. Apart from an adequate medication, medical consultation on nutrition and lifestyle is an essential part of the management of gout patients, who have a high risk of internal comorbidities. OBJECTIVE In 2015 the Austrian Society for Rheumatology and Rehabilitation (ÖGR) working group for osteoarthritis and crystal arthropathies published nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for patients with gout and hyperuricemia. Since then, a multitude of studies have been published addressing this topic, which necessitated an update. METHODS First, the authors performed a hierarchical literature search to screen for the literature published since 2015. Considering references given in the first publication, the relevant literature was selected and the recommendations from 2015 were either kept as published, reformulated or recreated. Finally, the evidence level and the level of agreement for each recommendation were added by the authors. RESULTS Based on this process, 10 recommendations were generated instead of the initial 9. As in the original publication, a graphical presentation with symbols was constructed to complement the written text. CONCLUSION The ÖGR recommendations on nutrition and lifestyle for patients with gout and hyperuricemia were updated in accordance with the most recent relevant literature. These are supposed to serve as information and education material for patients and updated information for physicians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease (PD) is a critical window for prevention by modifying lifestyle factors. However, there is limited knowledge on how diet quality is associated with prodromal PD symptoms in Asian populations. OBJECTIVE To examine the association between overall diet quality and prodromal PD features. METHODS A total of 71,640 Chinese participants who were free of PD were included in this cross-sectional study. Diet quality was assessed using the modified Alternative Healthy Eating Index (mAHEI) and alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED). Five prodromal features including probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (pRBD), hyposmia, excessive daytime sleepiness, constipation, and depressive symptom were measured using validated questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for having a combination of prodromal PD symptoms (1 and 2+ symptoms vs. 0 symptoms), adjusting for age, sex, lifestyle factors, total energy intake, and other potential confounders. RESULTS In the multivariable-adjusted model, the OR for having 2+ versus 0 prodromal PD features was 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.49, 0.85) comparing the highest versus the lowest mAHEI diet quality quartiles with a significant inverse trend (P-trend = 0.003). For individual prodromal PD features, better diet quality, as assessed by the mAHEI, was associated with lower odds of having excessive daytime sleepiness and constipation (P-trend < 0.05 for both). We observed a marginally significant association between aMED and prodromal PD features (adjusted OR comparing the extreme quartiles = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.98; P-trend = 0.09). CONCLUSION Better diet quality, as assessed by the mAHEI and the aMED, was associated with lower probability of having prodromal PD features in Chinese adults. © 2022 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to explore the association between dietary acid load and hyperuricemia in Chinese adults. METHODS A case-control study was conducted. Adult participants with hyperuricemia were recruited as the cases and those without hyperuricemia were as the controls. Food consumption was evaluated by food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Dietary acid load was assessed by potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP). Dietary acid load was divided into four levels: the first quartile (Q1), the second quartile (Q2), the third quartile (Q3) and the fourth quartile (Q4). Logistic regression model was applied for exploring the association between dietary acid load (PRAL and NEAP) and hyperuricemia. Odds ratio (OR) and its correspondence confidence interval (CI) were computed. RESULTS A total of 290 participants were eligible in this study, in which there were 143 individuals in case group and 147 in control group. A higher level of PRAL was found to be associated with odds of hyperuricemia. ORs of hyperuricemia for Q2, Q3 and Q4 of PRAL were 2.74 (95%CI: 1.94 ~ 3.88, p-value: 0.004), 2.90 (95%CI: 2.05 ~ 4.10, p-value: 0.002) and 3.14 (95%CI: 2.22 ~ 4.45, p-value: 0.001), respectively. There was a positive association between elevated NEAP and hyperuricemia. OR of hyperuricemia for Q2 was not material significance (OR:1.54, 95%CI: 0.93 ~ 2.53, p-value: 0.210), however, ORs of hyperuricemia for Q3 (OR: 2.40, 95%CI: 1.70 ~ 3.38, p-value: 0.011) and Q4 (OR: 3.27, 95%CI: 2.31 ~ 4.62, p-value: 0.001) were statistically significant. CONCLUSION Higher level of dietary acid load was found to be associated with hyperuricemia in Chinese adults, indicative of advocation of a well-balanced diet in this population.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia represents a great burden on global public health, and it is important to provide effective guidance at the level of dietary patterns. We evaluated the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the risk of hyperuricemia in a large-scale, community-based cohort in East China. In total, 45,853 participants that did not have either hyperuricemia nor gout were included and assigned a DASH dietary score based on their baseline dietary intake. They were then divided into five quintiles (Q1−Q5) according to their score, followed by cross-linkages with local health information systems and in-person surveys. Cox proportional hazards models were adopted to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). During a median follow-up of 4.54 years, 2079 newly diagnosed hyperuricemia cases were documented. Compared to the DASH Q1 group, the risk of incident hyperuricemia for the Q5 group was significantly reduced by 16% (HR: 0.84; 95% CIs: 0.72−0.97) in the adjusted model. The associations of DASH diet with hyperuricemia appeared stronger (P for interaction <0.001) among participants with 3−4 cardiometabolic diseases at baseline, compared with their counterparts. Our results suggest that the DASH diet could be taken into account in the recognition of risk population and the prevention of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is closely linked with an increased risk of developing hypertension, diabetes, renal failure and other metabolic syndromes. Probiotics, bioactive compounds and dietary patterns are safe cost-efficient ways to control hyperuricemia, whereas comprehensive reviews of their anti-hyperuricemic mechanisms are limited. This review summarizes the roles of probiotics, bioactive compounds and dietary patterns in treating hyperuricemia and critically reviews the possible mechanisms by which these interventions exert their activities. The dietary patterns are closely related to the occurrence of hyperuricemia through the indirect action of gut microbiota or the direct effects of host purine metabolism. The Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets help reduce serum uric acid concentrations and thus prevent hyperuricemia. Meanwhile, probiotics alleviate hyperuricemia by ways of absorbing purine, restoring gut microbiota dysbiosis and inhibiting xanthine oxidase (XO) activity. Bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, peptides and alkaloids exert various anti-hyperuricemic effects, by regulating urate transporters, blocking the active sites of XO and inhibiting the toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor kappa B signaling pathway and NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 signaling pathway. This review will assist people with hyperuricemia to adopt a healthy diet and contribute to the application of natural products with anti-hyperuricemic activity.

Abstract
Background Gout is the most frequent inflammatory joint disease in the western world and has a proven genetic background. Additionally, lifestyle factors like increasing life span and wealth, sufficient to excess nutritional status and a growing prevalence of obesity in the population, as well as e.g. alcohol consumption contribute to the rising incidence of hyperuricemia and gout. Apart from an adequate medication, medical advice on nutrition and lifestyle is an essential part of the management of gout patients, being at high risk of internal comorbidities. Objective In 2015, the ÖGR (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Rheumatologie und Rehabilitation) working group for osteoarthritis and crystal arthropathies already published nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for patients with gout and hyperuricemia. Since then, a multitude of literature has been published addressing this topic, what required an update. Methods First, the authors performed a hierarchical literature search to screen the meanwhile published literature. Also considering references of the first publication, the relevant literature was selected, and the 2015 recommendations were either kept as published, reformulated or newly produced. Finally, the evidence level and the level of agreement with each recommendation were added. Results Following this process, ten recommendations were generated instead of the initial nine. Like in the original publication, a colored icon presentation was provided to complement the written text. Conclusion The Austrian nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for patients with gout and hyperuricemia were updated incorporating the most recent relevant literature, serving as education material for patients and updated information for physicians.

Abstract
Despite a close relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and uric acid level, few studies have examined the relationship between uric acid level and fat intake by kidney function status. Therefore, we investigated the association between dietary fat intake and hyperuricemia with and without decreased kidney function in males living in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This study included 361 males with a mean age of 60.7 years. Dietary fat and fatty acid intakes were evaluated using the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. Reduced kidney function was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, while hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level >7.0 mg/dL. A two-way analysis of covariance showed that saturated fatty acid (p = 0.026), monounsaturated fatty acid (p = 0.014), and polyunsaturated fatty acid (p = 0.022) were significantly lower in the high uric acid group than in the normal uric acid group. In multiple logistic analysis stratified by renal function, lipid intake was negatively associated with hyperuricemia in the low eGFR group. These findings suggest that higher dietary lipid/fatty acid intake may be effective in the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia in men with CKD.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that a direct association exists between the diet and blood uric acid concentrations. However, works on the association of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia remain limited. Objective This study aims to evaluate the association of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia. Methods The relationship between dietary patterns and hyperuricemia was explored through a nutritional epidemiological survey in China (n = 4855). Three statistical methods, including principal component analysis, reduced rank regression (RRR), and partial least squares regression, were used to extract dietary patterns. General linear regression and logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the relationship of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia. Results After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the score for the plant-based dietary pattern was found to be negatively correlated with blood uric acid levels (β = − 3.225) and that for the animal dietary pattern was discovered to be directly correlated with blood uric acid levels (β = 3.645). The participants in the highest quartile of plant-based dietary pattern scores were at a low risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 0.699; 95% CI: 0.561–0.870, P < 0.05), whereas those in the highest quartile of animal dietary pattern scores were at a high risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.401; 95% CI: 1.129–1.739, P < 0.05). The participants in the third quartile of scores for the RRR dietary pattern, which was characterized by the relatively high intake of poultry, sugary beverages, and animal organs and the low intake of desserts and snacks, had a significantly higher risk of hyperuricemia than those in the first quartile of scores for the RRR dietary pattern (OR = 1.421; 95% CI: 1.146–1.763, P < 0.05). Conclusions Our research indicated that plant-based dietary pattern analyzed by PCA was negatively associated with blood uric acid concentrations, while animal-based dietary pattern was directly associated with blood uric acid concentrations. The RRR dietary pattern may have the potential to induce elevations in blood uric acid concentrations. Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unknown whether the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary pattern is associated with other blood pressure (BP) variables, beyond mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). OBJECTIVES The study aimed to study the associations between the DASH dietary pattern and daytime and nighttime mean BPs and BP variance independent of the mean (VIM). METHODS A sample of 324 Chinese adults aged ≥ 60 y who were not on BP-lowering medications were included in the analysis. The DASH score was calculated using data collected by a validated FFQ. The 24-h ambulatory BP was measured and the mean and VIM SBP and DBP were calculated for both the daytime (06:00-21:59) and nighttime periods (22:00-05:59). Multivariable linear models were constructed to assess associations between the DASH dietary pattern and daytime and nighttime BP outcomes, adjusting for sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, BMI, and hypertension (clinic SBP ≥ 140 mm Hg or DBP ≥ 90 mm Hg), and sleep parameters (only for nighttime BP outcomes). An interaction term between DASH score and hypertension status was added to explore the potential differential association in normotensive and hypertensive individuals. RESULTS Every 1-unit increase in the DASH score was associated with a 0.18-unit (95% CI: -0.34, -0.01 unit) and a 0.22-unit (95% CI: -0.36, -0.09 unit) decrease in nighttime VIM SBP and nighttime VIM DBP, respectively. DASH score was not associated with any daytime BP outcomes, nighttime mean SBP, or nighttime mean DBP. A significant interaction (DASH score × hypertension status) was detected for VIM SBP (P-interaction = 0.04), indicating a differential association between DASH score and nighttime VIM SBP by hypertension status. CONCLUSIONS Independently of sleep parameters and other factors, the DASH dietary pattern is associated with lower nighttime BP variability in elderly adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The evidence of the relationship between dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is limited. Thus, we conducted a cohort-based case-control study to examine whether adherence to the DASH diet was associated with lower NAFLD risk in China. METHODS We included 11 888 participants (2529 incident NAFLD and 9359 non-NAFLD) from the Kailuan cohort with no history of hepatitis B/C infection and alcohol drinking. DASH score was calculated based on the energy-adjusted consumption of vegetables, fruits, dairy, beans, grains, meats, fat, sodium and beverage, collected by a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used Logistic regression analysis to determine the NAFLD's risk according to the DASH score. RESULTS Higher DASH score was associated with lower risk of NAFLD. Compared with the lowest quintile of DASH score, the highest DASH quintile had a lower risk of occurring NAFLD, with odds ratio (OR) of 0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70-0.96) in the multivariate model. Stratified analysis showed that the inverse association was only observed in women (OR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48-0.94), and participants with overweight/obesity (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.66-0.94), fasting blood glucose <6.1 mmol/L (OR = 0.80, 95%: 0.67-0.96), low density lipoprotein ≥3.4 mmol/L (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.53-0.96), high density lipoprotein ≥1.0 mmol/L (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.69-0.96), ALT < 40 U/L (OR = 0.79, 95% CI:0.67-0.93) and C-reactive protein ≥2.0 mg/L (OR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.40-0.78). CONCLUSIONS Adherence to the DASH diet was inversely associated with a lower risk of NAFLD in the Chinese population. DASH diet should be highly recommended, especially for women and people with overweight/obesity and a high CRP level.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the health-promoting behaviours of patients with hyperuricaemia and influencing factors. DESIGN A descriptive qualitative design was used to gain insight into the personal experience of health promotion behaviour in patients with hyperuricaemia. METHODS Sixteen patients were sampled in face-to-face interviews with maximum variation, and the data were transcribed verbatim. The data analysis was based on the phrases of thematic analysis outlined by Braun and Clarke (2006). RESULTS Four main themes were identified in the data: (a) Perception of disease; (b) Motivation to change health-promoting behaviour; (c) Strategies for health-promoting behaviour; and (d) Encounter obstacles to change health-promoting behaviour.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prospective cohort studies linking dietary patterns and hyperuricemia (HUA) are limited, especially in Asian populations. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the association between various dietary patterns and risk for HUA in a general adult population. METHOD We used data from the TCLSIH (Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health) cohort study of 20 766 men and women who were free from HUA, cancer, and cardiovascular disease at baseline. Dietary patterns at baseline were identified with factor analysis based on responses to a validated 81-item food frequency questionnaire. HUA was defined as serum uric acid levels >420 μmol/L in men and >350 μmol/L in women. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the association of dietary patterns with incident HUA. RESULTS In all, 4389 first incident cases of HUA occurred during 73 822 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up of 4.2 y). Three main dietary patterns were extracted. They were the vegetable, sweet food, and animal food patterns. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, other dietary pattern scores, and inflammatory markers, comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles of dietary pattern scores, the multivariable hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) of HUA were 0.79 (0.72-0.87; Ptrend < 0.0001) for the vegetable pattern, 1.22 (1.12-1.33; Ptrend < 0.0001) for the sweet food pattern, and 1.24 (1.13-1.37; Ptrend < 0.0001) for the animal food pattern. CONCLUSIONS Dietary patterns rich in animal or sweet foods were positively associated with a higher risk for HUA, whereas the vegetable pattern was negatively associated.

Abstract
PURPOSE A significant shift in meal pattern with frequent eating out was closely associated with multiple chronic outcomes, but with limited evidence on hyperuricemia. We aimed to explore the associations between eating out and serum uric acid (SUA) as well as hyperuricemia. METHODS A total of 29,597 participants were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect dietary data, including the frequency of eating out. Linear regression models were used to examine the association of eating-out frequency with SUA and BMI. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were performed to assess the association and dose-response relationship between eating-out frequency and hyperuricemia. The mediation effect of BMI between eating out and the risk of hyperuricemia was evaluated. RESULTS Eating out was significantly associated with higher SUA levels in the total population and males (P < 0.001). Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CIs) of hyperuricemia were 1.26 (1.09, 1.46) for the total population and 1.18 (1.00, 1.40) for males (≥ 7 times/week vs 0 time/week). A non-linear positive dose-response relationship between eating-out frequency and hyperuricemia was observed. Furthermore, BMI played a partial mediating role in the relationship between eating out frequency and hyperuricemia, which explained 30.7% in the total population and 44.8% in males. CONCLUSION Our findings indicated that eating out was associated with increased SUA levels and elevated hyperuricemia risk in rural China, especially in males. Abstract
Little is known about which currently available a priori dietary indexes provide best guidance for reducing cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRF) among hyperlipidemic patients. This study was designed to compare the associations between four a priori dietary indexes, including Diet Balance Index (DBI-16), Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI), Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and CMRF among hyperlipidemic patients. A total of 269 participants were enrolled into the cross-sectional study. DBI-16, CHEI, MDS, and DASH scores were calculated using established methods. CMRF was measured using standard methods. DBI-total scores (DBI-TS) were inversely associated with triglyceride concentrations and TC:HDL-C ratio, and positively associated with HDL-C and ApoA1 concentrations (all p < 0.05), while the results for DBI-low bound scores (DBI-LBS) were opposite. DBI-high bound scores (DBI-HBS) and DASH scores were positively and inversely associated with glucose concentrations, respectively (both p < 0.05). Higher diet quality distance (DQD) was positively associated with higher TC, LDL-C and ApoB concentrations, and TC:HDL-C and LDL-C:HDL-C ratios, and lower HDL-C and ApoA1 concentrations and ApoA1:ApoB ratio (all p < 0.05). CHEI scores were inversely associated with triglyceride concentrations (p = 0.036). None of the dietary indexes was associated with blood pressures. DBI-16 provided most comprehensive evaluations of the overall diet quality and balance for optimizing cardiometabolic health among hyperlipidemic individuals.

Abstract
The rising incidence of cardiometabolic diseases and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading public health problem in East Asia. Diet is an important modifiable risk factor; thus, adopting a healthy diet such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet may help combat these chronic diseases. The DASH diet was originally developed in a U.S. population, and East Asia is demographically and culturally different from the U.S. Therefore, it is important to examine the evidence regarding the DASH diet and chronic disease in this unique population. This narrative review summarizes the evidence on the DASH diet and cardiometabolic health and CKD in East Asia. Culturally-modified DASH diets have been developed in some East Asian countries. Studies suggest the DASH diet is effective at lowering blood pressure in this population, though the long-term benefits remain unclear. Evidence also suggests the DASH diet may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Further research indicates the DASH diet and its components may reduce CKD risk. However, recommending the DASH diet in those who already have CKD is controversial, as it conflicts with current CKD dietary guidelines, especially in advanced CKD. Notably, current intakes in the general population differ from the DASH dietary pattern, suggesting public health efforts would be needed to encourage adoption of the DASH diet.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Beans are rich in purines, which are important substances that lead to elevated serum urate, especially exogenous purines. Few studies were conducted to assess the relationship between beans intake and serum urate or hyperuricemia, especially in rural people. The purpose of this study was to validate the association by gender in the rural Chinese population. Methods: A total of 38,855 participants aged 18–79 years old were enrolled from the Henan Rural Cohort Study (Registration number: ChiCTR-OOC-15006699). Dietary data were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between beans intake and serum urate levels or hyperuricemia. Restricted cubic spline regression was performed to display the dose–response relationship. Results: In multivariate-adjusted linear regression, an inverse correlation was found between beans intake and serum urate level (the highest quartile Q4 vs. the bottom quartile Q1) in both men (P = 0.008) and women (P < 0.001). Per 10-g increment in beans intake was associated with 0.30 μmol/L decreased concentration of serum urate in men and 0.71 μmol/L in women. The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of hyperuricemia were 0.83 (0.71, 0.97) in men and 0.73 (0.63, 0.84) in women (Q4 vs. Q1). Per 10-g increment in beans intake created a 1% decreased risk of hyperuricemia in men and 3% in women. The cubic spline suggested a risk reduction for hyperuricemia with increasing intake of beans. Conclusion: A higher beans intake was associated with a lower serum urate level and a reduced risk of hyperuricemia in both sexes, and the association was more pronounced in women.

Abstract
Background Night eating has been associated with an elevated risk of obesity, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. However, there is no longitudinal study on whether habitual night eating, regardless of diet quality and energy intake, is associated with arterial stiffness, a major etiological factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Methods and Results The study included 7771 adult participants without cardiovascular disease, cancer, or diabetes mellitus prior to dietary assessment by a validated food frequency questionnaire in 2014 through 2015. Participants were categorized into 3 groups based on self‐reported night‐eating habits: never or rarely, some days (1–5 times per week), or most days (6+ times per week). Arterial stiffness was assessed by brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity at baseline and repeatedly during follow‐ups. Mean differences and 95% CIs in the yearly change rate of brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity across the 3 groups were calculated, adjusting for age, sex, socioeconomic status, total energy intake, diet quality, sleep quality, and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. At baseline, 6625 (85.2%), 610 (7.8%), and 536 (6.9%) participants reported night eating as never or rarely, some days, or most days, respectively. During a mean 3.19 years, we observed a positive association between night‐eating frequency and progression of arterial stiffness (P trend=0.01). The adjusted difference in brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity change rate between the group that ate at night most days and the group that never or rarely ate at night was 14.1 (95% CI, 0.6–27.5) cm/s per year. This association was only significant in women, but not in men (P interaction=0.03). Conclusions In an adult population free of major chronic diseases, habitual night eating was positively associated with the progression of arterial stiffness, a hallmark of arteriosclerosis and biological aging.
