Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces are of great interest because of their remarkable properties. Due to its maximal hardness and chemical inertness, diamond film has great potential in fabricating robust superhydrophobic surfaces. In the present study, an oxygen-terminated polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (O-PBDD) superhydrophobic surface with micro/nano-hierarchical porous structures is developed. The preparation method is very simple, requiring only sputtering and dewetting procedures. The former involves sputtering gold and copper particles onto the hydrogen-terminated polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (H-PBDD) to form gold/copper films, whereas the latter involves placing the samples in an atmospheric tube furnace to form hierarchical pores. By controlling the etching parameters, the wettability of the O-PBDD surface can be adjusted from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic, which is significantly different to the normal hydrophilicity feature of O-termination diamonds. The water contact angle of the obtained O-PBDD surface can reach 165 ± 5°, which is higher than the superhydrophobic diamond surfaces that are reported in the literature. In addition, the O-PBDD surface exhibits excellent durability; it can maintain satisfactory superhydrophobicity even after high-pressure, high-temperature, and sandpaper friction tests. This work provides a new research direction for fabricating robust superhydrophobic materials with diamond film.

Abstract
The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

Abstract
The wettable surface or nonwettable surface that is derived from a multilevel micronanoscale structure is abundant in nature and biomimetic commodities. Those hoverflies with the seta-coated wing membrane detached from impacting free-falling raindrops were observed in static states. A hoverfly wing membrane with well-ordered setae was identified as a robust nonwettable surface, and the static water contact angle θ on the wing membrane at the microscopic scale is 136.84 ± 0.98°. Hoverfly wing membrane-water droplet interaction with the actual truth and the theoretical models was discussed and indicated that the theoretical calculation might not state the actual situation, arising from the membrane or seta-drop-bubble interaction and those multilevel micronanoscale structure characteristics on the wing membrane. Detailed investigation on nonwettable surface-wettable surface transformation with surface CaCO3 accumulation in a carbonization reaction and the characteristic transformation toward the hoverfly wing membrane with the multilevel micronanoscale structure was carried out. Then, the CaCO3 accumulation on PDMS texture films was carried out and the static water contact angle θ was tested. Those observations offer ideas to fabricate artificial films with a multilevel micronanoscale structure that could obtain some characteristics, i.e., nonwettable surface-wettable surface transformation.

Abstract
Super-hydrophilic and oleophobic functional materials can prevent pollution or adsorption by repelling oil, and have good circulation. However, traditional strategies for preparing these functional materials either use expensive fabrication machines or contain possibly toxic organic polymers, which may prohibit the practical application. The research of multifunctional ZnO microstructures or nanoarrays thin films with super-hydrophilic, antifouling, and antibacterial properties has not been reported yet. Moreover, the exploration of underwater oleophobic and self-cleaning antifouling properties in ZnO micro/nanostructures is still in its infancy. Here, we prepared ZnO microstructured films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates (F-ZMF) for the development of advanced self-cleaning type super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials. With the increase of the accelerators, the average size of the F-ZMF microstructures decreased. The F-ZMF shows excellent self-cleaning performance and hydrophilic (water contact angle ≤ 10°) and oleophobic characteristics in the underwater antifouling experiment. Under a dark condition, F-ZMF-4 showed good antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) with inhibition rates of 99.1% and 99.9%, respectively. This study broadens the application scope of ZnO-based material and provides a novel prospect for the development of self-cleaning super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials.

Abstract
The article presents a very simple method of glass modification to obtain the anti-fog effect. Silanes containing two types of functional groups, namely a hydrophilic and polar polyether group and an alkoxysilyl group (to bond with the surface of the modified material) were synthesized in thiol-ene reactions. The hydrothiolation reactions of polyethers containing a C=C terminal bond with mercaptoalkoxysilane proceeded efficiently, yielding quantitatively appropriate products under mild reaction conditions. This method enabled the synthesis of a series of alkoxysilanes functionalized with polyethers, differing in structure. The group of obtained derivatives was characterized by 1H, 13C, 29Si NMR, and FT-IR analyses, and then used to prepare coatings on glass using the sol-gel method. The coated glass surfaces exhibited transparency, superhydrophilic or hydrophilic properties, anti-fog and anti-frost performance.

Abstract
In recent years, flexible devices have gained rapid development with great potential in daily life. As the core component of wearable devices, flexible tactile sensors are prized for their excellent properties such as lightweight, stretchable and foldable. Consequently, numerous high-performance sensors have been developed, along with an array of innovative fabrication processes. It has been recognized that the improvement of the single performance index for flexible tactile sensors is not enough for practical sensing applications. Therefore, balancing and optimization of overall performance of the sensor are extensively anticipated. Furthermore, new functional characteristics are required for practical applications, such as freeze resistance, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, and degradability. From a bionic perspective, the overall performance of a sensor can be optimized by constructing bionic microstructures which can deliver additional functional features. This review briefly summarizes the latest developments in bionic microstructures for different types of tactile sensors and critically analyzes the sensing performance of fabricated flexible tactile sensors. Based on this, the application prospects of bionic microstructure-based tactile sensors in human detection and human-machine interaction devices are introduced.

Abstract
A droplet deposited on a solid substrate leads to the wetting phenomenon. A natural observation is the lotus effect, known for its superhydrophobicity. This special feature is engendered by the structured microstructure of the lotus leaf, namely, surface heterogeneity, as explained by the quintessential Cassie-Wenzel theory (CWT). In this work, recent designs of functional substrates are overviewed based on the CWT via manipulating the contact area between the liquid and the solid substrate as well as the intrinsic Young's contact angle. Moreover, the limitation of the CWT is discussed. When the droplet size is comparable to the surface heterogeneity, anisotropic wetting morphology often appears, which is beyond the scope of the Cassie-Wenzel work. In this case, several recent studies addressing the anisotropic wetting effect on chemically and mechanically patterned substrates are elucidated. Surface designs for anisotropic wetting morphologies are summarized with respect to the shape and the arrangement of the surface heterogeneity, the droplet volume, the deposition position of the droplet, as well as the mean curvature of the surface heterogeneity. A thermodynamic interpretation for the wetting effect and the corresponding open questions are presented at the end.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) spreads and develops quickly worldwide as a new global crisis which has left deep socio-economic damage and massive human mortality. This virus accounts for the ongoing outbreak and forces an urgent need to improve antiviral therapeutics and targeted diagnosing tools. Researchers have been working to find a new drug to combat the virus since the outbreak started in late 2019, but there are currently no successful drugs to control the SARS-CoV-2, which makes the situation riskier. Very recently, new variant of SARS-CoV-2 is identified in many countries which make the situation very critical. No successful treatment has yet been shown although enormous international commitment to combat this pandemic and the start of different clinical trials. Nanomedicine has outstanding potential to solve several specific health issues, like viruses, which are regarded a significant medical issue. In this review, we presented an up-to-date drug design strategy against SARS-CoV-2, including the development of novel drugs and repurposed product potentials were useful, and successful drugs discovery is a constant requirement. The use of nanomaterials in treatment against SARS-CoV-2 and their use as carriers for the transport of the most frequently used antiviral therapeutics are discussed systematically here. We also addressed the possibilities of practical applications of nanoparticles to give the status of COVID-19 antiviral systems.

Abstract
The antifogging coating based on super-hydrophilic polymer is regarded as the most promising strategy to avoid fogging but suffers from short-term effectiveness due to antifogging failure induced by water invasion. In this study, a black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) hybrid polymer hetero-network coating (PUA/PAHS/BPs HN) was prepared by UV curing for the first time to achieve long-term antifogging performance. The polymer hetero-network (HN) structure was composed of two novel cross-linked acrylic resin and polyurethane acrylate. Different from physical blending, a covalent P-C bond between BPs and polymer is generated by UV initiated free radical reaction, resulting in BPs firmly embedded in the polymer HN structure. The BPs enriched on the coating surface by UV regulating migration prevent permeation of water towards the inside of the coating through its own good water-based lubricity and water absorption capacity. Compared with the nonhybrid polymer HN, PUA/PAHS/BPs HN not only has higher hardness and better friction resistance properties, but also exhibits superior water resistance and longer antifogging duration. Since water invasion was greatly reduced by BPs, the PUA/PAHS/BPs HN coating maintained antifogging duration for 60 min under a 60 °C water vapor test and still maintained long-term antifogging performance after being immersed in water for 5 days.

Abstract
Tailoring the hydrophilicity of solid surfaces with a strong affinity to water has been extensively explored in the last 20 years, but studies have been limited to the single function of wettability. Here, the multifunctional properties of tailored surface films are extended from exhibiting superwettability to facilitating biological activities. It is shown that amyloid fibrils can be universally coated onto various substrates, such as fabrics (non-woven organic masks), metal meshes, polyethersulfone (PES), glass, and more, endowing the resulting surfaces with excellent performance in oil/water mixture and emulsion separation, antifouling, and antifogging. Moreover, the biocompatible crosslinked amyloid fibril coatings can serve as a platform for biocatalytic activities by immobilizing enzymes, as shown in the 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) oxidation and Reactive Black 5 (RB5) degradation by laccase from Trametes versicolor. The study provides a universal approach to modifying surface morphology and chemical properties via fibrous protein templates, opening the way to unexplored bio-based applications and functionalities.

Abstract
The design of hydrophobic surfaces requires a material which has a low solid surface tension and a simple fabrication process for anchoring and controlling the surface morphology. A generic method for the spontaneous formation of robust instability patterns is proposed through the hydrosilylation of a fluoroalkene bearing dangling chains, Rf = C6F13(CH2)3-, with a soft polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) spin-coated gel polymer (0.8 μm thick) using Karstedt catalyst. These patterns were easily formed by an irreversible swelling reaction due to the attachment of a layer to various substrates. The buckling instability was created by two different approaches for a gel layer bound to a rigid silicon wafer substrate (A) and to a soft nonswelling silicone elastomer foundation (B). The observations of grafted Rf-PMHS films in the swollen state by microscopy revealed two distinct permanent patterns on various substrates: dotlike of wavelength λ = 0.4-0.7 μm (A) or wrinkle of wavelength λ = 4-7 μm (B). The elastic moduli ratios of film/substrate were determined using PeakForce quantitative nanomechanical mapping. The characteristic wavelengths (λ) of the patterns for systems A and B were quantitatively estimated in relation to the thickness of the top layer. A diversity of wrinkle morphologies can be achieved by grafting different side chains on pristine PMHS films. The water contact angle (WCA) hysteresis of fluorinated chain (Rf) was enhanced upon roughening the surfaces, giving highly hydrophobic surface properties for water with static/hysteresis WCAs of 136°/74° in the resulting wrinkle (B) and 119°/41° in the dotlike of lower roughness (A). The hydrophobic properties of grafted films on A with various mixtures of hexyl/fluoroalkyl chains were characterized by static CA: WCA 104-119°, ethylene glycol CA 80-96°, and n-hexadecane CA 17-61°. A very low surface energy of 15 mN/m for Rf-PMHS was found on the smoother dotlike pattern.

Abstract
Increased occurrence of antimicrobial resistance leads to a huge burden on patients, the healthcare system, and society worldwide. Developing antimicrobial materials through doping rare-earth elements is a new strategy to overcome this challenge. To this end, we design antibacterial films containing CeO2-x-TiO2, xanthan gum, poly(acrylic acid), and hyaluronic acid. CeO2-x-TiO2 inks are additionally integrated into a hexagonal grid for prominent transparency. Such design yields not only an antibacterial efficacy of ∼100% toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli but also excellent antifog performance for 72 h in a 100% humidity atmosphere. Moreover, FluidFM is employed to understand the interaction in-depth between bacteria and materials. We further reveal that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are crucial for the bactericidal activity of E. coli through fluorescent spectroscopic analysis and SEM imaging. We meanwhile confirm that Ce3+ ions are involved in the stripping phosphate groups, damaging the cell membrane of S. aureus. Therefore, the hexagonal mesh and xanthan-gum cross-linking chains act as a reservoir for ROS and Ce3+ ions, realizing a long-lasting antibacterial function. We hence develop an antibacterial and antifog dual-functional material that has the potential for a broad application in display devices, medical devices, food packaging, and wearable electronics.

Abstract
Inspired by information processing and logic operations of life, many artificial biochemical systems have been designed for applications in molecular information processing. However, encoding the binary synergism between matter, energy, and information in a superwetting system remains challenging. Herein, a superwetting paradigm was proposed for multifunctional applications including molecular visual sensing and data security on a superhydrophobic surface. A Triton X-100-encapsulated gelatin (TeG) hydrogel was prepared and selectively decomposed by trypsin, releasing the surfactant to decrease the surface tension of a droplet. Integrating the droplet with the superhydrophobic surface, the superwetting behavior was utilized for visual detection and information encoding. Interestingly, the proposed TeG hydrogel can function as an artificial gelneuron for molecular-level logic computing, where the combination of matters (superhydrophobic surface, trypsin, and leupeptin) acts as inputs to interact with energy (liquid surface tension and solid surface energy) and information (binary character), resulting in superwettability transitions (droplet surface tension, contact angle, rolling angle, and bounce) as outputs. Impressively, the TeG gelneuron can be further developed as molecular-level double cryptographic steganography to encode, encrypt, and hide specific information (including the maze escape route and content of the classical literature) due to its programmability, stimuli responsive ability, and droplet concealment. This study will encourage the development of advanced molecular paradigms and their applications, such as superwetting visual sensing, molecular computing, interaction, and data security.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, extensive research efforts have been devoted to developing surfaces with unique functionalities, such as controlled wettability, antibiofouling, antifogging, and anti-icing behavior, for applications in a wide range of fields, including biomedical devices, optical instruments, microfluidics, and energy conservation and harvesting. However, many of the previously reported approaches have limitations with regard to eco-friendliness, multifunctionality, long-term stability and efficacy, and cost effectiveness. Herein, we propose a scalable bifunctional surface that simultaneously exhibits excellent antifogging and antibiofouling properties based on the synergistic integration of an eco-friendly and bio-friendly polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel, oleamide (OA), and nanoscale architectures in a single flexible platform. We demonstrate that the PEG-OA-nanostructure hybrid exhibits excellent antifogging performance owing to its enhanced water absorption and spreading properties. We further show that the triple hybrid exhibits notable biofilm resistance without the use of toxic biocides or chemicals by integrating the "fouling-resistant" mechanism of the PEG hydrogel, the "fouling-release" mechanism of OA, and the "foulant-killing" mechanism of the nanostructures.

Abstract
Antifogging coatings for infrastructures and transparent objects have attracted much attention lately from the perspective of safety and visibility. We have developed a one-pot process to fabricate transparent composite films showing long-lasting antifogging and fast repeatable self-healing properties based on an integral blend (IB) method. This method does not require any specific pretreatments of inorganic fillers/particles. Thus, the precursor solutions could be prepared in a single step by simply mixing raw materials, e.g., poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) having different molecular weights (MWs: 55, 360, and 1300 k), nano-clay particles (NCPs), and amino-terminated organosilane (AOS). In this study, to control the degree of cross-linking between the PVP matrices and NCPs, addition of AOS as a cross-linker to the PVP matrices (weight percentage of AOS to the PVP matrices, α = 0.01-300%) was carefully controlled. Transparency and self-healing abilities/kinetics of the resulting samples were found to be strongly influenced by both the MWs of PVP and α values. Samples spin-coated with the lowest MW of PVP (55 k) and α values of 0.01-1% gave highly transparent and durable antifogging performance. For example, no fogging was observed for 7 days under >80% relative humidity, and scratches about 30 μm in width could be completely self-healed within a few hours. However, samples with α > 10% gave opaque/grayish films that did not show any self-healing abilities because of an increase in cross-linking of the matrices. The optimized precursor solution was also deposited directly onto the glass slides covered with a transparent porous silica nano-framework (SNF) by a spray-coating method. Due to the formation of the hard and superhydrophilic/hygroscopic SNF with a large surface area, durability of antifogging and self-healing properties of the composite films were moderately improved, compared to those on the flat glass slides.

Abstract
In the last few decades, numerous studies have focused on designing suitable hydrophilic materials to inhibit surface-induced fog or frost under extreme conditions. As fogging and condensation frosting on a film involves molecular interaction with water prior to forming discrete droplets on the surface, it is essential to control the extent of a film to strongly bind with water molecules for antifogging coatings. While the water contact angle measurement is commonly used to probe the hydrophilicity of a film, it oftentimes fails to predict the antifogging and antifrosting performance as this value only reflects the wettability of a given surface to water droplet. In this work, a polysaccharide-based film composed of chitosan (CHI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is used as the model system and oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) moieties are additionally introduced to study the effect of OEG moieties on antifogging and condensation frosting. We show that the film containing OEG-grafted CHI exhibits excellent frost-resistant capability due to the OEG moieties in the film that serve as active sites for water molecules to strongly interact in a nonfreezable state.

Abstract
Reducing machinery surface friction resistance can improve the efficiency of energy utilization. The lotus leaf, as everyone knows, has a strong capacity for self-cleaning and hydrophobicity. In this paper, the bionic surface of the lotus leaf was prepared in large-area, and its drag reduction performance was studied by both numerical simulation and experimental analysis. Experimental results showed that the maximum drag reduction rate of the bionic surface was 6.29% which appeared at a velocity of 3 m s−1. The contact state between liquid and bionic surface changed from Cassie state to Wenzel state with the increase of water flow velocity. The surface free energies of the bionic surface and smooth surface were 1.09 mJ m−2 and 14.26 mJ m−2, respectively. In the droplet rolling experiment, the water droplet was a hemisphere when it rolled on the smooth surface, while it was an ellipsoid on the bionic surface. This study provides a theoretical basis for the structural design of bionic drag reduction surfaces, which are expected to be applied in underwater vehicles. The bionic surface of the lotus leaf was prepared in large-area, and its drag reduction performance was studied by both numerical simulation and experimental analysis.![]()

Abstract
Poly(glycidyloxypropyl)silsesquioxane (PGPS) was successfully synthesized by hydrolysis and polycondensation using the nitrogen flow method. A poly(3-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxypropyl)silsesquioxane) (PSQ-OH) film was prepared via two routes. In route A, PSQ-OH was prepared by the hydrolysis of the epoxy group of PGPS in an aqueous hydrochloric acid (HCl)/tetrahydrofuran solution, affording a diol group; then, PSQ-OH was coated on a glass substrate and heated. The antifogging performance of the PSQ-OH film was evaluated in terms of water uptake (WU) and scratch resistance. The obtained PSQ-OH film exhibited a low WU of 5% and a scratch resistance of 1.6. In route B, PGPS was coated on a glass substrate and immersed in a 0.5 mol/L aqueous sulfuric acid solution for 1-15 h at room temperature, producing a diol group. The solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum indicated that the epoxy group was completely hydrolyzed after immersion for 15 h. The WU of the PSQ-OH film prepared via route B increased from 5 to 19% with the increase in the immersion time and was higher than that of the PSQ-OH film prepared via route A. The PSQ-OH film on a glass substrate retained transparency under water vapor exposure at 60 °C. The PSQ-OH film prepared via route B exhibited a high scratch resistance of 2.7-3.6, similar to that of a poly(3-(2-aminoethylaminopropyl)silsesquioxane) film. The scratch resistance of the PSQ-OH film was 5-7 times higher than that of the poly(vinyl alcohol) film. The PSQ-OH film was uniform with no pinholes and cracks. The PSQ-OH film was transparent and colorless and exhibited a high transmittance of >90% in the wavelength range of 400-800 nm. Overall, the prepared PSQ-OH film exhibits good antifogging, transparency, and mechanical properties.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Transparent superhydrophilic coatings are very promising in various scenarios. Appropriate fabrication of colloid coatings with superhydrophilicity both in air and under oil would enlarge their application potential in anti-oil fouling and facilitate anti-fogging of transparent surfaces. EXPERIMENTS The Barite colloid was obtained from a one-step precipitation method and was transferred onto glasses to prepare transparent coatings with different thicknesses simply by dip-coating. Then, the impact of thickness on wettability and property was studied through the investigation of wettability in various phase, anti-crude oil fouling performance and anti-fogging ability. FINDINGS Similar surface morphology and roughness of these coatings were achieved and all the coated surfaces showed ultra-hydrophilicity both in air and under oil. Moreover, the hydrophilicity in air and under oil was found to deteriorate with the decrease of coatings' thickness and dual superhydrophilicity could be achieved on thick coatings. More importantly, excellent anti-crude oil fouling property and durable anti-fogging ability were realized on these transparent coatings with dual superhydrophilicity.

Abstract
To achieve both a low surface adhesion function and a high anti-wetting function, it is generally necessary to introduce multi-level micro-nano-structures on a surface. However, this will bring the difficulty of preparation technology, and the functions will fail due to the fact that the nanostructures can easily be damaged. In this research, the surface adhesion and anti-wetting properties of several typically one-level microstructure-arrayed hydrophobic surfaces are analyzed with the dynamics theory, including a square pillar-arrayed three-dimensional microstructure, a conical table-arrayed microstructure, and square frustum-arrayed microstructure. It is found that the anti-adhesion performance and anti-wetting property cannot achieve the best performance simultaneously on the one-level microstructure arrayed surfaces. Either the critical pressure of anti-wetting is finite when the surface adhesion is the lowest, or both the anti-adhesion and anti-wetting capacities are finite. However, an interesting phenomenon is found in that the square frustum-arrayed surface can not only achieve an almost infinite anti-wetting capacity when the distance between neighboring microstructures vanishes, but also reach near-zero adhesion when the square frustum reduces to a square pyramid. All the theoretical predictions are further verified by precise numerical simulations. The results of this paper should be helpful for the design of surfaces with low surface adhesion and strong anti-wetting functions in practical engineering.

Abstract
Wearable superwettable surfaces with dynamic tunable wettability and self-healability are promising for advanced wearable electronics, whereas have been rarely reported. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic shape memory film (SSMF) with switchable surface wettability and high strain sensitivity has been conveniently fabricated. The surface topography of the SSMF can be finely adjusted by a reversible stretching (bending)/recovery way, which makes it feasible to control the surface-switchable adhesive superhydrophobicity by simple body movements, demonstrating great advantages in selective droplet manipulation and smart control of droplet movement. Moreover, benefitting from the hierarchical micro/nanostructures and outstanding sensing performance, the flexible SSMFs with good adaptivity and durability can serve as smart wearable sensors attached to human skin to achieve full-range and real-time detection of human motions and intelligent control of Internet of Things. More interestingly, the unique dynamic dewetting property enables the sensors to work in a humid environment or rainy days. Overall, this work successfully integrates dynamic tunable superwettability into design of intelligent wearable electronics with multifunctions. The obtained SSMF-based wearable surface with dynamic dewetting properties reveals great potential in versatile application fields such as liquid-repellent electronics, wearable droplet manipulators, and all-weather intelligent actuators.

Abstract
One of the main protective measures against COVID-19's spread is the use of face masks. It is therefore of the utmost importance for face masks to be high functioning in terms of their filtration ability and comfort. Notwithstanding the prevalence of the commercial polypropylene face masks, its effectiveness is under contention, leaving vast room for improvement. During the pandemic, the use of at least one mask per day for each individual results in a massive number of masks that need to be safely disposed of. Fabricating biodegradable filters of high efficiency not only can protect individuals and save the environment but also can be sewed on reusable/washable cloth masks to reduce expenses. Wearing surgical masks for long periods of time, especially in hot regions, causes discomfort by irritating sensitive facial skin and warmed inhaled air. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of novel electrospun composites layers as face mask filters for protection against pathogens and tiny particulates. The combinatorial filter layers are made by integrating TiO2 nanotubes as fillers into chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) polymeric electrospun nanofibers as the outer layer. The other two filler-free layers, chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) and silk/poly(vinyl alcohol) as the middle and inner composite layers, respectively, were used for controlled protection, contamination prevention, and comfort for prolonged usage. The ASTM standards evaluation tests were adopted to evaluate the efficacy of the assembled filter, revealing high filtration efficiency compared to that of commercial surgical masks. The TiO2/Cs/PVA outer layer significantly reduced Staphylococcus aureus bacteria by 44.8% compared to the control, revealing the dual effect of TiO2 and chitosan toward the infectious bacterial colonies. Additionally, molecular dynamics calculations were used to assess the mechanical properties of the filter layers.

Abstract
In this work, we develop a simple yet robust method to fabricate a bioinspired adhesive coating based on polyethyleneimine (PEI) and tannic acid (TA) complexes, exhibiting excellent antifogging, self-cleaning, and antibacterial properties. The polyethyleneimine-tannic acid (PEI-TA) complexes coating combined with the bioinspired adhesive property from TA can be effectively and stably coated onto various substrates through a one-step deposition process, and the hydrophilicity of the coated substrates can be significantly enhanced with their water contact angle less than 10°. The bioinspired adhesive coating endows the coated substrates with outstanding antifogging and self-cleaning performance. Moreover, it is found that the PEI-TA coated safety goggles display excellent durability and antifogging capability compared to the commercial antifogging safety goggles and commercial antifogging agents coated safety goggles under 65 ℃ vapor condition for 2 h. Furthermore, the PEI-TA coatings show superior antibacterial activities for Gram-negative Escherichiak coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The antifogging, self-cleaning, and antibacterial coating provides widely potential application prospects in optical and medical devices.

Abstract
Bioinspired materials for temperature regulation have proven to be promising for passive radiation cooling, and super water repellency is also a main feature of biological evolution. However, the scalable production of artificial passive radiative cooling materials with self-adjusting structures, high-efficiency, strong applicability, and low cost, along with achieving superhydrophobicity simultaneously remains a challenge. Here, a biologically inspired passive radiative cooling dual-layer coating (Bio-PRC) is synthesized by a facile but efficient strategy, after the discovery of long-horned beetles' thermoregulatory behavior with multiscale fluffs, where an adjustable polymer-like layer with a hierarchical micropattern is constructed in various ceramic bottom skeletons, integrating multifunctional components with interlaced "ridge-like" architectures. The Bio-PRC coating reflects above 88% of solar irradiance and demonstrates an infrared emissivity >0.92, which makes the temperature drop by up to 3.6 °C under direct sunlight. Moreover, the hierarchical micro-/nanostructures also endow it with a superhydrophobic surface that has enticing damage resistance, thermal stability, and weatherability. Notably, we demonstrate that the Bio-PRC coatings can be potentially applied in the insulated gate bipolar transistor radiator, for effective temperature conditioning. Meanwhile, the coverage of the dense, super water-repellent top polymer-like layer can prevent the transport of corrosive liquids, ions, and electron transition, illustrating the excellent interdisciplinary applicability of our coatings. This work paves a new way to design next-generation thermal regulation coatings with great potential for applications.

Abstract
The fabrication of amphiphobic materials requires a precise and complicated design, especially for 3D porous materials, and amphiphobic sponges have rarely been investigated. This paper describes the synthesis of a superhydrophobic and oleophobic silicone sponge (SS-F) by simply building hierarchical structures, that is, introducing a secondary structure on the pore walls of a hydrophobic and oleophilic silicone sponge. This simple and efficient synthesis method is based on the thiol-ene click reaction. The uniform structure, composition, and hierarchical structures of SS-F are confirmed. The results of the analyses show that the secondary microstructure improves liquid repellency, while the rough and porous surface design ensures durability. Thus, SS-F exhibits good stability, and the amphiphobicity of the surface could withstand scalpel cutting, cyclic compression, extreme temperatures of 250 and -196 °C for 5 h, and long-term storage in an ambient environment. Both its outer and inner surfaces show superhydrophobicity and oleophobicity, which restrict the ability of the adsorption of liquids, enabling its use in oil and water. The introduction of hierarchical structures paves a way for preparing other 3D porous materials.

Abstract
HYPOTHESES The effective wetting area, a parameter somewhat different from the apparent contact area at solid-liquid interfaces, plays a significant role in surface wettability. However, determination of the effective wetting area for hydrophobic surfaces remains an open question. In the present study, we developed an electrochemical impedance method to evaluate the effective wetting area at a hydrophobic solid-liquid interface. EXPERIMENTS Patterned Si surfaces were prepared using the anisotropic wet etching method, and the water contact angle and electrochemical impedance were measured experimentally. The effective wetting area at the solid-liquid interface was examined based on the wettability and impedance results. FINDINGS The electrochemical impedance for the patterned Si surfaces increased with increasing surface hydrophobicity, whereas the effective wetting area decreased. The intermediate wetting state (i.e. partial wetting model) was confirmed at the patterned Si surfaces, and the effective wetting area was theoretically estimated. The effective wetting area predicted from the electrochemical impedance agreed well with that predicted from the partial wetting model, thereby demonstrating the validity of the electrochemical impedance method for evaluating the effective wetting area at the hydrophobic solid-liquid interface.

Abstract
Transparent materials with antifogging and self-cleaning ability are of extreme significance for utilization in outdoor solar cell devices to alleviate the performance loss and maintenance costs. Herein, with inspiration from the anti-wetting surfaces in nature, regular papillae-like microstructure arrays (PMAs) inspired by lotus leaves were designed via a common UV lithography combined with a soft replication. Subsequently, the biomimetic slippery polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film (BSPF) inspired by the pitcher plant was fabricated successfully by infusing with hydrophobic liquid lubricant. The resultant surface has hydrophobic surface chemistry, a slippery interface, PMAs structure. The wettability, optical characteristic, antifogging property and self-cleaning ability of the PMAs-based BSPF were characterized experimentally. The film displays excellent optical transmittance, antireflection, antifogging, and self-cleaning properties, which is superior to the flat PDMS film (FPF). Remarkably, an average reflection of ∼11.3% in the FPF was reduced to ∼8.9% of the BSPF. In addition, after gradient spray test for 120 s, the antifogging efficiency was close to 100% for the BSPF surface in comparison with the flat PDMS film (FPF), biomimetic PDMS film (BPF) and flat slippery PDMS film (FSPF) (35%, 70% and 85%). Furthermore, we also discovered that the BSPF surface exhibited a better self-cleaning performance toward a variety of liquids than solid dust.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces hold great prospects for extremely diverse applications owing to their water repellence property. The essential feature of superhydrophobicity is micro-/nano-scopic roughness to reserve a large portion of air under a liquid drop. However, the vulnerability of the delicate surface textures significantly impedes the practical applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Robust superhydrophobicity is a must to meet the rigorous industrial requirements and standards for commercial products. In recent years, major advancements have been made in elucidating the mechanisms of wetting transitions, design strategies and fabrication techniques of superhydrophobicity. This review will first introduce the mechanisms of wetting transitions, including the thermodynamic stability of the Cassie state and its breakdown conditions. Then we highlight the development, current status and future prospects of robust superhydrophobicity, including characterization, design strategies and fabrication techniques. In particular, design strategies, which are classified into passive resistance and active regeneration for the first time, are proposed and discussed extensively.

Abstract
Based on the superhydrophilicity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) after ultraviolet irradiation, it has a high potential in the application of antifogging. However, a durable superhydrophilic state and a broader photoresponse range are necessary. Considering the enhancement of the photoresponse of TiO2, doping is an effective method to prolong the superhydrophilic state. In this paper, a Fe3+ doped TiO2 film with long-lasting superhydrophilicity and antifogging is prepared by sol-gel method. The experiment and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to investigate the antifogging performance and the underlying microscopic mechanism of Fe3+ doped TiO2. Antifogging tests demonstrate that 1.0 mol % Fe3+ doping leads to durable antifogging performance which lasts 60 days. The DFT calculations reveal that the Fe3+ doping can both increase the photolysis ability of TiO2 under sunlight exposure and enhance the stability of the hydroxyl adsorbate on TiO2 surface, which are the main reasons for a long-lasting superhydrophilicity of TiO2 after sunlight exposure.

Abstract
It is a great challenge to fabricate a surface with Cassie-Baxter wettability that can be continuously adjusted from hydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity by changing of geometric parameters. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a bioinspired surface fabricated by using a projection micro-stereolithography (PμSL) based 3D printing technique to address the challenge. Independent of materials, the bioinspired textured surface has a maximum contact angle (CA) of 171°, which is even higher than that of the omniphobic springtail skin we try to imitate. Most significantly, we are able to control the CA of the bioinspired surface in the range of 55-171° and the adhesion force from 71 to 99 μN continuously by only changing the geometric parameters of the bioinspired microstructures. The underlying mechanisms of the CA control of our bioinspired surface are also revealed by using a multi-phase lattice Boltzmann model. Furthermore, we demonstrate potential applications in droplet-based microreactors, nonloss water transportation, and coalescence of water droplets by employing our 3D-printed bioinspired structures with their remarkable precise Cassie-Baxter wettability control and petal effects. The present results potentially pave a new way for designing next generation functional surfaces for microdroplet manipulation, droplet-based biodetection, antifouling surfaces, and cell culture.

Abstract
Design and fabrication of smart materials with reversible wettability for oil-water separation have attracted worldwide attention due to the increasingly serious water pollution problem. In this study, a rough oxide coating with micro/nanoscale structures is developed on the 304 stainless steel mesh (SSM) by laser ablation. The smart surface with ethanol immersion and natural drying treatments shows the wetting conversion between underwater superoleophobicity and superhydrophobicity. Based on the wettability transition behavior, both light and heavy oil-water mixtures can be separated with the high separation efficiency. Moreover, after being exposed to various corrosive solutions and high temperatures, the smart surface still shows prominent environmental stability. Switchable surface with excellent properties should be an optimal choice to solve the environmental conditions that need to be addressed urgently.

Abstract
Polymer nanofiber composites with superhydrophobicity are promising for the chemical vapor sensing or oil/water separation, but it remains challenging to develop superhydrophobic, anticorrosive, and durable nanofiber composites that can achieve both the organic solvent vapor detection and oil (organic solvent)/water separation with high separation flux and excellent recyclability. Here, a flexible, stretchable, and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic nanofiber composite membrane with excellent photothermal conversion performance is fabricated by decorating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a hollow structure onto the polyurethane nanofibers and subsequent polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification. The combination of CNFs and PDMS greatly improves the membrane's tensile strength and Young's modulus without sacrificing its stretchability. The dual polymer nanofiber and CNF network are beneficial to the chemical vapor or liquid diffusion into the membrane and thus can be used for high-performance chemical vapor sensing and oil/water separation. The nanofiber composite is responsive to different organic vapors with a low detection limit and good selectivity. Also, the material can achieve fast oil/water separation with the oil (dichloromethane) permeate flux as high as 6577.3 L m-2 h-1. In addition, the separation flux and efficiency remain stable during the 30 separated oil/water separation tests, exhibiting excellent recyclability.

Abstract
The functional design of paper-based material surfaces with renewable functions and environmentally friendly properties is prevalent nowadays. Herein, a superhydrophobic surface with a coral reef-like structure was prepared on filter paper by electroless copper plating, rapid silver nitrate etching, and facile 1-hexadecanethiol impregnation. After low-surface-energy thiol treatment, this unique coral reef-like structure surface showed excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 163.8° and superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle of 0°, which could be used for oil-water separation and had a separation efficiency above 89.17% after 12 consecutive oil-water separations. Because the copper layer and silver nanostructure are both excellent conductive materials, the modified paper exhibited excellent electromagnetic shielding properties, and the electromagnetic interface shielding effectiveness exceeded 63 dB from 9 kHz to 1.5 GHz. The modified paper also had excellent self-cleaning properties and a better corrosion resistance. The unique three-dimensional interweaving structure between the cellulose fibers in the filter paper is fully utilized, and the substitution reaction between the silver ion and the copper coating produces a coral reef-like structure, which provides a new strategy for promoting the wide application of paper-based materials.

Abstract
Transparent nanocomposite films with multiple functionalities, such as durable antifogging, dynamic oleophobic, self-healing properties, were successfully prepared by a simple spin- or spray-coating method using aqueous solutions of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and aminopropyl-functionalized nanoclay (AMP-clay) platelets. In this study, anionic/waterborne perfluorooctanesulfonic acid potassium salt (PFOS) was premixed with the aqueous PVP solution to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of PFOS. Due to the addition of PFOS, the resulting nanocomposite film surfaces displayed statically hydrophobic (static water contact angle over 90°) and dynamically oleophobic (5 μL of oil droplets could slide off of the surface at low sliding/substrate tilt angles of less than 10°) behaviors. In spite of our nanocomposite film surface exhibiting a statically hydrophobic nature, the antifogging properties remained unchanged even after being left under high-humidity conditions (over 80% relative humidity) for 3 days. Thanks to both exceptional water-absorbing properties of PVP/AMP-clay matrices and good mobility of PFOS driven by moisture, our oil-repellent nanocomposite films could be repeatedly self-healed even after both severe physical (cutting, scratching, or falling sand abrasion) and chemical (vacuum UV oxidation) damages. Large-scale fabrication of this multifunctional nanocomposite film (30 cm × 30 cm) could also be successfully demonstrated by a spray-coating method based on in situ gel formation.
