Fluorinated 2D Lead Iodide Perovskite Ferroelectrics

Ionic Photovoltaics-in-Memory in van der Waals Material

The photovoltaic effect is gaining growing attention in the optoelectronics field due to its low power consumption, sustainable nature, and high efficiency. However, the photovoltaic effects hitherto reported are hindered by the stringent band-alignment requirement or inversion symmetry-breaking, and are challenging for achieving multifunctional photovoltaic properties (such as reconfiguration, nonvolatility, and so on). Here, a novel ionic photovoltaic effect in centrosymmetric CdSb2Se3Br2 that can overcome these limitations is demonstrated. The photovoltaic effect displays significant anisotropy, with the photocurrent being most apparent along the CdBr2 chains while absent perpendicular to them. Additionally, the device shows electrically-induced nonvolatile photocurrent switching characteristics. The photovoltaic effect is attributed to the modulation of the built-in electric field through the migration of Br ions. Using these unique photovoltaic properties, a highly secure circuit with electrical and optical keys is successfully implemented. The findings not only broaden the understanding of the photovoltaic mechanism, but also provide a new material platform for the development of in-memory sensing and computing devices.

A Lead-Free Ferroelectric 2D Dion-Jacobson Tin Iodide Perovskite

2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites emerge as a new class of 2D semiconductors with the potential to combine excellent optoelectronic properties with symmetry-enabled properties such as ferroelectricity. Although many lead-based ferroelectric 2D halide perovskites are reported, there is yet to be a conclusive report of ferroelectricity in tin-based 2D perovskites. Here, the structures and properties of a new series of 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) Sn perovskites: (4AMP)SnI4, (4AMP)(MA)Sn2I7, and (4AMP)(FA)Sn2I7 (4AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium, MA = methylammonium, and FA = formamidinium), are reported. Structural characterization reveals that (4AMP)SnI4 is polar with in-plane spontaneous polarization whereas (4AMP)(MA)Sn2I7 and (4AMP)(FA)Sn2I7 are centrosymmetric. Further, (4AMP)SnI4 displays second harmonic generation (SHG) and polarization-electric field hysteresis measurements confirm it is ferroelectric with a spontaneous polarization of 10.0 µC cm-2 at room temperature. (4AMP)SnI4 transitions into a centrosymmetric structure above 367 K. As the first direct experimental observation of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of a Sn-based 2D hybrid perovskite, this work opens up environmentally friendly 2D tin halide perovskites for ferroelectricity and other physical property studies.

The past 10 years of molecular ferroelectrics: structures, design, and properties

Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Realization of High-Performance Self-Powered Polarized Photodetection with Large Temperature Window in a 2D Polar Perovskite

Polarization photodetection taking advantage of the anisotropy of 2D materials shines brilliantly in optoelectronic fields owing to differentiating optical information. However, the previously reported polarization detections are mostly dependent on external power sources, which is not conducive to device integration and energy conservation. Herein, a 2D polar perovskite (CBA)2CsPb2Br7 (CCPB, CBA = 4-chlorobenzyllamine) has been successfully synthesized, which shows anticipated bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) with an open-circuited photovoltage up to ≈0.2 V. Devices based on CCPB monomorph fulfill a fascinating self-powered polarized photodetection with a large polarization ratio of 2.7 at room temperature. Moreover, CCPB features a high phase-transition temperature (≈475 K) which prompts such self-powered polarized photodetection in a large temperature window of device operation, since BPVE generated by spontaneous polarization can only exist in the polar structure prior to the phase transition. Further computational investigation reveals the introduction of CBA+ with a large dipole moment contributes to quite large polarization (17.5 µC cm-2) and further super high phase transition temperature of CCPB. This study will promote the application of 2D perovskite materials for self-powered polarized photodetection in high-temperature conditions.

What Matters for the Charge Transport of 2D Perovskites?

Compared to 3D perovskites, 2D perovskites exhibit excellent stability, structural diversity, and tunable bandgaps, making them highly promising for applications in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. However, the trade-off for worse charge transport is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. This comprehensive review first discusses the structure of 3D and 2D metal halide perovskites, then summarizes the significant factors influencing charge transport in detail and provides a brief overview of the testing methods. Subsequently, various strategies to improve the charge transport are presented, including tuning A'-site organic spacer cations, A-site cations, B-site metal cations, and X-site halide ions. Finally, an outlook on the future development of improving the 2D perovskites' charge transport is discussed.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric Nanosheets Synthesized by a Room-Temperature Antisolvent Method

Over the past years, the application potential of ferroelectric nanomaterials with unique physical properties for modern electronics is highlighted to a large extent. However, it is relatively challenging to fabricate inorganic ferroelectric nanomaterials, which is a process depending on a vacuum atmosphere at high temperatures. As significant complements to inorganic ferroelectric nanomaterials, the nanomaterials of molecular ferroelectrics are rarely reported. Here a low-cost room-temperature antisolvent method is used to synthesize free-standing 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) ferroelectric nanosheets (NSs), that is, (CHA)2PbBr4 NSs (CHA = cyclohexylammonium), with an average lateral size of 357.59 nm and a thickness ranging from 10 to 70 nm. This method shows high repeatability and produces NSs with excellent crystallinity. Moreover, ferroelectric domains in single NSs can be clearly visualized and manipulated using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The domain switching and PFM-switching spectroscopy indicate the robust in-plane ferroelectricity of the NSs. This work not only introduces a feasible, low-cost, and scalable method for preparing molecular ferroelectric NSs but also promotes the research on molecular ferroelectric nanomaterials.

Polar Aromatic Two-dimensional Dion-Jacobson Halide Perovskites for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Polar materials with spontaneous polarization (Ps) have emerged as highly promising photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution owing to the Ps-enhanced photogenerated carrier separation. However, traditional inorganic polar materials often suffer from limitations such as wide band gaps and poor carrier transport, which hinders their photocatalytic H2 evolution efficiency. Here, we rationally synthesized a series of isostructural two-dimensional (2D) aromatic Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites, namely (2-(2-Aminoethyl)pyridinium)PbI4 (2-APDPI), (3-(2-Aminoethyl)pyridinium)PbI4 (3-APDPI), and (4-(2-Aminoethyl)pyridinium)PbI4 (4-APDPI), where 2-APDPI and 4-APDPI crystalize in polar space groups with piezoelectric constants (d33) of approximately 40 pm V-1 and 3-APDPI adopts a centrosymmetric structure. Strikingly, owing to the Ps-facilitated separation of photogenerated carriers, polar 2-APDPI and 4-APDPI exhibit a 3.9- and 2.8-fold increase, respectively, in photocatalytic H2 evolution compared to the centrosymmetric 3-APDPI. As a pioneering study, this work provides an efficient approach for exploring new polar photocatalysts and highlights their potential in promoting photocatalytic H2 evolution.

Ferroics in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites: Fundamentals, Design Strategies, and Implementation

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) afford highly versatile structure design and lattice dimensionalities; thus, they are actively researched as material platforms for the tailoring of ferroic behaviors. Unlike single-phase organic or inorganic materials, the interlayer coupling between organic and inorganic components in HOIPs allows the modification of strain and symmetry by chirality transfer or lattice distortion, thereby enabling the coexistence of ferroic orders. This review focuses on the principles for engineering one or multiple ferroic orders in HOIPs, and the conditions for achieving multiferroicity and magnetoelectric properties. The prospects of multilevel ferroic modulation, chiral spin textures, and spin orbitronics in HOIPs are also presented.

Silver/Antimony-Base Multifunctional Double Perovskite with H/F Substitution Enhance Properties

Two-dimensional double perovskites have experienced rapid development due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties and diverse structural characteristics. However, the synthesis of high-performance multifunctional compounds and the regulation of their properties still lack relevant examples. Herein, we synthesized two multifunctional compounds, (C6H14N)4AgSbBr8 (1) and (F2-C6H12N)4AgSbBr8 (2), which exhibit high solid-state phase transition temperature, bistable dielectric constant switching, second harmonic generation (SHG), and bright emission. Through H/F substitution, the transition temperature increases and achieves a smaller band gap attributed to reduced interlayer spacing. Furthermore, we investigated the broad emission mechanism of the compounds through first-principles calculation and variable-temperature fluorescence, confirming the presence of the STE1 emission. Our work provides insight into the further development of multifunctional compounds and chemical modification that enhances compound properties.

Volume-Confined Fabrication of Large-Scale Single-Crystalline Molecular Ferroelectric Thin Films and Their Applications in 2D Materials

With outstanding advantages of chemical synthesis, structural diversity, and mechanical flexibility, molecular ferroelectrics have attracted increasing attention, demonstrating themselves as promising candidates for next-generation wearable electronics and flexible devices in the film form. However, it remains a challenge to grow high-quality thin films of molecular ferroelectrics. To address the above issue, a volume-confined method is utilized to achieve ultrasmooth single-crystal molecular ferroelectric thin films at the sub-centimeter scale, with the thickness controlled in the range of 100-1000 nm. More importantly, the preparation method is applicable to most molecular ferroelectrics and has no dependency on substrates, showing excellent reproducibility and universality. To demonstrate the application potential, two-dimensional (2D) transitional metal dichalcogenide semiconductor/molecular ferroelectric heterostructures are prepared and investigated by optical spectroscopic method, proving the possibility of integrating molecular ferroelectrics with 2D layered materials. These results may unlock the potential for preparing and developing high-performance devices based on molecular ferroelectric thin films.

Building Block-Inspired Hybrid Perovskite Derivatives for Ferroelectric Channel Layers with Gate-Tunable Memory Behavior

Ferroelectric photovoltaics driven by spontaneous polarization (Ps ) holds a promise for creating the next-generation optoelectronics, spintronics and non-volatile memories. However, photoactive ferroelectrics are quite scarce in single homogeneous phase, owing to the severe Ps fatigue caused by leakage current of photoexcited carriers. Here, through combining inorganic and organic components as building blocks, we constructed a series of ferroelectric semiconductors of 2D hybrid perovskites, (HA)2 (MA)n-1 Pbn Br3n+1 (n=1-5; HA=hexylamine and MA=methylamine). It is intriguing that their Curie temperatures are greatly enhanced by reducing the thickness of inorganic frameworks from MAPbBr3 (n=∞, Tc =239 K) to n=2 (Tc =310 K, ΔT=71 K). Especially, on account of the coupling of room-temperature ferroelectricity (Ps ≈1.5 μC/cm2 ) and photoconductivity, n=3 crystal wafer was integrated as channel field effect transistor that shows excellent a large short-circuit photocurrent ≈19.74 μA/cm2 . Such giant photocurrents can be modulated through manipulating gate voltage in a wide range (±60 V), exhibiting gate-tunable memory behaviors of three current states ("-1/0/1" states). We believe that this work sheds light on further exploration of ferroelectric materials toward new non-volatile memory devices.

Spontaneous Polarization Induced Optical Responses in a Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Halide Perovskite

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites exhibit unique structural and optical properties because large organic molecular cations distort the perovskite structure and the excitons confined in the 2D layers are stable. Here, we report the temperature dependences of the absorption spectra, second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, and lattice constants of 2D perovskite (BA)2(EA)2Pb3I10 single crystals, where BA is n-butylammonium and EA is ethylammonium. We found that the Urbach tail of the absorption spectrum significantly changes at around 200 K and that the change is correlated with the SHG intensity and the in-plane lattice distortion. We concluded that a random distribution of spontaneous polarizations in the ferroelectric phase modifies the linewidth of the band-edge exciton transition and is the cause of the anomalous temperature dependence of the steepness parameter of the Urbach tail.

Revealing the Polarizations of Molecular Ferroelectrics via SHG Polarimetry at the Nanoscale

Multifarious molecular ferroelectrics with multipolar axial characteristics have emerged in recent years, enriching the scenarios for energy harvesting, sensing, and information processing. The increased polar axes have enhanced the urgency of distinguishing different polarization states in material design, mechanism exploration, etc. However, conventional methods hardly meet the requirements of in situ, fast, microscale, contactless, and nondestructive features due to their inherent limitations. Herein, SHG polarimetry is introduced to probe the multioriented polarizations on a nanosized multiaxial molecular ferroelectric, i.e., TMCM-CdCl3 nanoplates, as an example. Combined with the analysis of the second-order susceptibility tensor, SHG polarimetry could serve as an effective method to detect the polarization orders and domain distributions of molecular ferroelectrics. Profiting from the full-optical feature, SHG polarimetry can even be performed on samples covered by transparent mediums, 2D materials, or thin metal electrodes. Our research might spark further fundamental studies and expand the application boundaries of next-generation ferroelectric materials.

Enhanced optical absorption in two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskites via biaxial strain and surface doping

Two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (2D RP) perovskites can form layered protective materials using long organic cations as "barrier" caps, which is expected to solve the problem of instability of perovskites in the working environment. In this work, we systematically studied the 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 hybrid perovskites using density functional theory. The results reveal that the 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskites are semiconductors with band gaps of 2.22 eV. The optical absorption peak of the 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskite structure is located at 532 nm in the visible region. Interestingly, the optical absorption spectrum of the 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskite structure enhanced under suitable strains. The highest optical absorption peak appears in 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 under a -2% strain, and its theoretical photoelectric conversion efficiency is 28.5%. More interestingly, the replacement of surface I atoms with Br is another ways to enhance the optical absorption spectrum of the 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskite structure. The optical absorption peak blue-shifts to the high energy region, which has higher solar energy flux density than the low energy region. The good stability, tuneable band gap and excellent theoretical photoelectric conversion efficiency of the 2D (C6H5CH2NH3)2PbI4 perovskite structure make it a promising candidate for novel 2D hybrid perovskite based photoelectronic devices and solar cells.

High-Temperature Ferroelasticity and Photoluminescence in a 2D Monolayer Perovskite Compound: (C5NH8Br)2PbBr4

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties and easy synthesis. As far as we know, most documented ferroelastics mainly focus on the 3D (three-dimensional) perovskites, the 2D monolayer perovskite ferroelastics are rarely reported before. In this work, we synthesized a 2D lead-based perovskite (C₅NH₁₃Br)₂PbBr₄ (1) (C₅NH₁₃Br = 5-bromoamylamine cation) by introducing flexible chain organic cations. The evolution of ferroelastic domains observed by a polarized light microscope confirms that compound 1 undergoes a ferroelastic phase transition at 392/384 K. In addition, its direct band gap is 2.877 eV. Interestingly, the material emits an attractive blue light (quantum yield 5.06%) under UV light. Three structural descriptors are introduced to quantitatively analyze the relationship between structural distortion and the shape of emission peak. This work provides a way to design multifunctional perovskite-type materials.

Carriers, Quasi-particles, and Collective Excitations in Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites (HPs) are potential game-changing materials for a broad spectrum of optoelectronic applications ranging from photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, lasers to radiation detectors, ferroelectrics, thermoelectrics, etc. Underpinning this spectacular expansion is their fascinating photophysics involving a complex interplay of carrier, lattice, and quasi-particle interactions spanning several temporal orders that give rise to their remarkable optical and electronic properties. Herein, we critically examine and distill their dynamical behavior, collective interactions, and underlying mechanisms in conjunction with the experimental approaches. This review aims to provide a unified photophysical picture fundamental to understanding the outstanding light-harvesting and light-emitting properties of HPs. The hotbed of carrier and quasi-particle interactions uncovered in HPs underscores the critical role of ultrafast spectroscopy and fundamental photophysics studies in advancing perovskite optoelectronics.

Visible-Photoactive Perovskite Ferroelectric-Driven Self-Powered Gas Detection

Chemiresistive sensing has been regarded as the key monitoring technique, while classic oxide gas detection devices always need an external power supply. In contrast, the bulk photovoltage of photoferroelectric materials could provide a controllable power source, holding a bright future in self-powered gas sensing. Herein, we present a new photoferroelectric ([n-pentylaminium]₂[ethylammonium]₂Pb₃I₁₀, 1), which possesses large spontaneous polarization (∼4.8 μC/cm²) and prominent visible-photoactive behaviors. Emphatically, driven by the bulk photovoltaic effect, 1 enables excellent self-powered sensing responses for NO₂ at room temperature, including extremely fast response/recovery speeds (0.15/0.16 min) and high sensitivity (0.03 ppm^-1). Such figures of merit are superior to those of typical inorganic systems (e.g., ZnO) using an external power supply. Theoretical calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy measurements confirm the great selectivity of 1 for NO₂. As far as we know, this is the first realization of ferroelectricity-driven self-powered gas detection. Our work sheds light on the self-powered sensing systems and provides a promising way to broaden the functionalities of photoferroelectrics.

Emerging Halide Perovskite Ferroelectrics

Halide perovskites have gained tremendous attention in the past decade owing to their excellent properties in optoelectronics. Recently, a fascinating property, ferroelectricity, has been discovered in halide perovskites and quickly attracted widespread interest. Compared with traditional perovskite oxide ferroelectrics, halide perovskites display natural advantages such as structural softness, low weight, and easy processing, which are highly desirable in applications pursuing miniaturization and flexibility. This review focuses on the current research progress in halide perovskite ferroelectrics, encompassing the emerging materials systems and their potential applications in ferroelectric photovoltaics, self-powered photodetection, and X-ray detection. The main challenges and possible solutions in the future development of halide perovskite ferroelectric materials are also attempted to be pointed out.

The First Demonstration of Strain-Controlled Periodic Ferroelectric Domains with Superior Piezoelectric Response in Molecular Materials

Achieving a periodic domain structure in ferroelectric materials to tailor the macroscopic properties or realize new functions has always been a hot topic. However, methods to construct periodic domain structures, such as epitaxial growth, direct writing by scanning tips, and the patterned electrode method, are difficult or inefficient to implement in emerging molecular ferroelectrics, which have the advantages of lightweight, flexibility, biocompatibility, etc. An efficient method for constructing and controlling periodic domain structures is urgently needed to facilitate the development of molecular ferroelectrics in nanoelectronic devices. In this work, it is demonstrated that large-area, periodic and controllable needle-like domain structures can be achieved in thin films of the molecular ferroelectric trimethylchloromethyl ammonium trichlorocadmium (TMCM-CdCl₃ ) upon the application of tensile strain. The domain evolution under various tensile strains can be clearly observed, and such processes are accordingly identified. Furthermore, the domain wall exhibits a superior piezoelectric response, with up to fivefold enhancement compared to that of the pristine samples. Such large-area tunable periodic domain structure and abnormally strong piezoresponse are not only of great interests in fundamental studies, but also highly important in the future applications in functional molecular materials.

Ferroelectricity in Hybrid Perovskites

Ferroelectric ceramics such as PbZr_xTi_1-xO₃ (PZT) are widely applied in many fields, from medical to aerospace, because of their dielectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric properties. In the past few years, hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have gradually attracted attention for their optical and electronic properties, including ferroelectricity, and for their low fabrication costs. In this Review, we first describe techniques that are used to quantify ferroelectric figures of merit of a material. We then discuss ferroelectricity in hybrid perovskites, starting from controversies in methylammonium iodoplumbate perovskites and then focusing on low-dimensional perovskites that offer an unambiguous platform to obtain ferroelectricity. Finally, we provide examples of the application of perovskite ferroelectrics in solar cells, LEDs, and X-ray detectors. We conclude that the vast structure-property tunability makes low-dimensional hybrid perovskites promising, but they have yet to offer ferroelectric figures of merit (e.g., saturated polarization) and thermal stability (e.g., Curie temperature) competitive with those of conventional oxide perovskite ferroelectric materials.

Acquiring Bulk Anomalous Photovoltaic Effect in Single Crystals of a Lead-Free Double Perovskite with Aromatic and Alkali Mixed-Cations

The bulk anomalous photovoltaic (BAPV) effect of acentric materials refers to a distinct concept from traditional semiconductor-based devices, of which the above-bandgap photovoltage hints at a promise for solar-energy conversion. However, it is still a challenge to exploit new BAPV-active systems due to the lacking of knowledge on the structural origin of this concept. BAPV effects in single crystals of a 2D lead-free double perovskite, (BBA)₂ CsAgBiBr₇ (1, BBA = 4-bromobenzylammonium), tailored by mixing aromatic and alkali cations in the confined architecture to form electric polarization are acquired here. Strikingly, BAPV effects manifested by above-bandgap photovoltage (V_OC ) show unique attributes of directional anisotropy and positive dependence on electrode spacing. The driving source stems from orientations of the polar aromatic spacer and Cs⁺ ion drift, being different from the known built-in asymmetry photovoltaic heterojunctions. As the first demonstration of the BAPV effect in the double perovskites, the results will enrich the family of environmentally green BAPV-active candidates and further facilitate their new optoelectronic application.

Rational Design of Ferroelectric 2D Perovskite for Improving the Efficiency of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells Over 23

Despite the great progress of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs), it still faces several challenges during the homogeneous fabrication of high-quality perovskite thin films, and overcoming the insufficient exciton dissociation. To the ends, we rationally design the ferroelectric two-dimensional (2D) perovskite based on pyridine heterocyclic ring as the organic interlayer. We uncover that incorporation of the ferroelectric 2D material into 3D perovskite induces an increased built-in electric field (BEF), which enhances the exciton dissociation efficiency in the device. Moreover, the 2D seeds could assist the 3D crystallization by forming more homogeneous and highly-oriented perovskite crystals. As a result, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 23 % has been achieved by the f-PSCs with outstanding ambient stability. Moreover, the piezo/ferroelectric 2D perovskite intrigues a decreased hole transport barriers at the ITO/perovskite interface under tensile stress, which opens new possibilities for developing highly-efficient f-PSCs.

Precisely Tailoring a FAPbI3-Derived Ferroelectric for Sensitive Self-Driven Broad-Spectrum Polarized Photodetection

Benefiting from superior semiconducting properties and the angle-dependence of the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) on polarized light, the two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics are developed for sensitive self-powered polarized photodetection. Most of the currently reported ferroelectric-driven polarized photodetection is restricted to the shortwave optical response, and expanding the response range is urgently needed. Here we report the first instance of a FAPbI₃-derived (2D) perovskite ferroelectric, (BA)₂(FA)Pb₂I₇ (1, BA is n-butylammonium, FA is formamidinium). It exhibited a notably high thermostability and broad-spectrum adsorption extending to around 650 nm. Significantly, 1 demonstrated ferroelectricity-driven self-powered polarized photodetection under 637 nm with an anisotropic photocurrent ratio of ∼1.96, ultrahigh detectivity of 3.34 × 10¹² Jones, and long-term repetition. This research will shed light on the development of new ferroelectrics for potential application in broad-spectrum polarization-based optoelectronics.

Rational Design of Non-Centrosymmetric Hybrid Halide Perovskites

Structural non-centrosymmetry in semiconducting organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites can introduce functionalities like anomalous photovoltaics and nonlinear optical properties. Here we introduce a design principle to prepare Pb- and Bi-based two- and one-dimensional hybrid perovskites with polar non-centrosymmetric space groups. The design principle relies on creating dissimilar hydrogen and halogen bonding non-covalent interactions at the organic-inorganic interface. For example, in organic cations like I-(CH₂)₃-NH₂(CH₃)⁺ (MIPA), -CH₃ is substituted by -CH₂I at one end, and -NH₃⁺ is substituted by -NH₂(CH₃)⁺ at the other end. These substitutions of two -H atoms by -I and -CH₃ reduce the rotational symmetry of MIPA at both ends, compared to an unsubstituted cation, for example, H₃C-(CH₂)₃-NH₃⁺. Consequently, the dissimilar hydrogen-iodine and iodine-iodine interactions at the organic-inorganic interface of (MIPA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites break the local inversion symmetries of Pb-I octahedra. Owing to this non-centrosymmetry, (MIPA)₂PbI₄ displays visible to infrared tunable nonlinear optical properties with second and third harmonic generation susceptibility values of 5.73 pm V^-1 and 3.45 × 10^-18 m² V^-2, respectively. Also, the single crystal shows photocurrent on shining visible light at no external bias, exhibiting anomalous photovoltaic effect arising from the structural asymmetry. The design strategy was extended to synthesize four new non-centrosymmetric hybrid perovskite compounds. Among them, one-dimensional (H₃N-(CH₂)₃-NH(CH₃)₂)BiI₅ shows a second harmonic generation susceptibility of 7.3 pm V^-1 and a high anomalous photovoltaic open-circuit voltage of 22.6 V.

Integrated Reversible Thermochromism, High Tc , Dielectric Switch and Narrow Band Gap in One Multifunctional Ferroic

Organic-inorganic Hybrid (OIH) materials for multifunctional switchable applications have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and good structural tunability. However, it still remains challenging to fabricate one simple OIH compound with multi-functionals properties, such as dielectric switching, thermochromic properties, semiconductor characteristics and ferroelasticity. Under this context, we successfully synthesized [2-(2-fluorophenyl)ethan-1- ammonium]₂ SnBr₆ (compound 1), which has a higher phase transition temperature of 427.7 K. Additionally, it exhibits a semiconducting property with an indirect band gap of 2.36 eV. Combining ferroelastic, narrow band gap, thermochromic, and dielectric properties, compound 1 can be considered as a rarely reported multi-functional ferroelastic material, which is expected to give inspiration for broadening the applications in the smart devices field.

Ferroelectric hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and their structural and functional diversity

Molecular ferroelectrics have gradually aroused great interest in both fundamental scientific research and technological applications because of their easy processing, light weight and mechanical flexibility. Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics (HOIPFs), as a class of molecule-based ferroelectrics, have diverse functionalities owing to their unique structure and have become a hot spot in molecular ferroelectrics research. Therefore, they are extremely attractive in the field of ferroelectrics. However, there seems to be a lack of systematic review of their design, performance and potential applications. Herein, we review the recent development of HOIPFs from lead-based, lead-free and metal-free perovskites, and outline the versatility of these ferroelectrics, including piezoelectricity for mechanical energy-harvesting and optoelectronic properties for photovoltaics and light detection. Furthermore, a perspective view of the challenges and future directions of HOIPFs is also highlighted.

Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Room-Temperature Multiferroics

Organic-inorganic multiferroics are promising for the next generation of electronic devices. To date, dozens of organic-inorganic multiferroics have been reported; however, most of them show a magnetic Curie temperature much lower than room temperature, which drastically hampers their application. Here, by performing first-principles calculations and building effective model Hamiltonians, we reveal a molecular orbital-mediated magnetic coupling mechanism in two-dimensional Cr(pyz)₂ (pyz = pyrazine) and the role that the valence state of the molecule plays in determining the magnetic coupling type between metal ions. Based on these, we demonstrate that a two-dimensional organic-inorganic room-temperature multiferroic, Cr(h-fpyz)₂ (h-fpyz = half-fluoropyrazine), can be rationally designed by introducing ferroelectricity in Cr(pyz)₂ while keeping the valence state of the molecule unchanged. Our work not only reveals the origin of magnetic coupling in 2D organic-inorganic systems but also provides a way to design room-temperature multiferroic materials rationally.

Rational Design of Molecular Ferroelectrics with Negatively Charged Domain Walls

Ferroelectric domains and domain walls are unique characteristics of ferroelectric materials. Among them, charged domain walls (CDWs) are a special kind of peculiar microstructure that highly improve conductivity, piezoelectricity, and photovoltaic efficiency. Thus, CDWs are believed to be the key to ferroelectrics' future application in fields of energy, sensing, information storage, and so forth. Studies on CDWs are one of the most attractive directions in conventional inorganic ferroelectric ceramics. However, in newly emerged molecular ferroelectrics, which have advantages such as lightweight, easy preparation, simple film fabrication, mechanical flexibility, and biocompatibility, CDWs are rarely observed due to the lack of free charges. In inorganic ferroelectrics, doping is a traditional method to induce free charges, but for molecular ferroelectrics fabricated by solution processes, doping usually causes phase separation or phase transition, which destabilizes or removes ferroelectricity. To realize stable CDWs in molecular systems, we designed and synthesized an n-type molecular ferroelectric, 1-adamantanammonium hydroiodate. In this compound, negative charges are induced by defects in the I^- vacancy, and CDWs can be achieved. Nanometer-scale CDWs that are stable at temperatures as high as 373 K can be "written" precisely by an electrically biased metal tip. More importantly, this is the first time that the charge diffusion of CDWs at variable temperatures has been investigated in molecular ferroelectrics. This work provides a new design strategy for n-type molecular ferroelectrics and may shed light on their future applications in flexible electronics, microsensors, and so forth.

Intercalation-driven ferroelectric-to-ferroelastic conversion in a layered hybrid perovskite crystal

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted intense interests due to their quantum well structure and tunable excitonic properties. As an alternative to the well-studied divalent metal hybrid perovskite based on Pb²⁺, Sn²⁺ and Cu²⁺, the trivalent metal-based (eg. Sb³⁺ with ns2 outer-shell electronic configuration) hybrid perovskite with the A₃M₂X₉ formula (A = monovalent cations, M = trivalent metal, X = halide) offer intriguing possibilities for engineering ferroic properties. Here, we synthesized 2D ferroelectric hybrid perovskite (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ with measurable in-plane and out-of-plane polarization. Interestingly, (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ can be intercalated with FeCl₄ ions to form a ferroelastic and piezoelectric single crystal, (TMA)₄-Fe(iii)Cl₄-Sb₂Cl₉. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the unusual mechanism of ferroelectric-ferroelastic crossover in these crystals.

Dehydration-activated structural phase transition in a two-dimensional hybrid double perovskite

As a feasible lead-free scheme, organic-inorganic hybrid double perovskites show many excellent properties, including ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity, self-powered circularly polarized light detection and so on. In this work, the solid-to-solid structural phase transition of a two-dimensional hybrid double perovskite (CHA)₄CuBiI₈ was successfully activated via the dehydration of (CHA)₄CuBiI₈·H₂O, which was proven by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-dependent dielectric measurements. Using variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffractometry, the cause behind the phase transition of (CHA)₄CuBiI₈ was determined to be the overall coordination of distortion and movement of the inorganic skeleton and thermal deformation of the cationic structure. In addition, the substance after dehydration shows good stability in multiple reversible switching during dielectric tests. The interesting dehydration-activated results of the material contribute towards a further expansion of the properties and potential application of hybrid double perovskites.

High-TC Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric CuCrS2 Grown via Chemical Vapor Deposition

Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectrics have attracted intensive attention. However, the 2D ferroelectrics remain rare, and especially few of them represent high ferroelectric transition temperature (T_C), which is important for the usability of ferroelectrics. Herein, CuCrS₂ nanoflakes are synthesized by salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition and exhibit switchable ferroelectric polarization even when the thickness is downscaled to 6 nm. On the contrary, a CuCrS₂ nanoflake shows a T_C as high as ∼700 K, which can be attributed to the robust tetrahedral bonding configurations of Cu cations. Such robustness can be further clarified by a theoretically predicted high order-disorder transition barrier and structure evolution from 600 to 800 K. Additionally, the interlocked out-of-plane (OOP) and in-plane (IP) ferroelectric domains are observed and two kinds of devices based on OOP and IP polarizations are demonstrated.

A small-molecule organic ferroelectric with piezoelectric voltage coefficient larger than that of lead zirconate titanate and polyvinylidene difluoride

Piezoelectric materials that generate electricity when deforming are ideal for many implantable medical sensing devices. In modern piezoelectric materials, inorganic ceramics and polymers are two important branches, represented by lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). However, PVDF is a nondegradable plastic with poor crystallinity and a large coercive field, and PZT suffers from high sintering temperature and toxic heavy element. Here, we successfully design a metal-free small-molecule ferroelectric, 3,3-difluorocyclobutanammonium hydrochloride ((3,3-DFCBA)Cl), which has high piezoelectric voltage coefficients g₃₃ (437.2 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹) and g₃₁ (586.2 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹), a large electrostriction coefficient Q₃₃ (about 4.29 m⁴ C⁻²) and low acoustic impedance z₀ (2.25 × 10⁶ kg s⁻¹ m⁻²), significantly outperforming PZT (g₃₃ = 34 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹ and z₀ = 2.54 × 10⁷ kg s⁻¹ m⁻²) and PVDF (g₃₃ = 286.7 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹, g₃₁ = 185.9 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹, Q₃₃ = 1.3 m⁴ C⁻², and z₀ = 3.69 × 10⁶ kg s⁻¹ m⁻²). Such a low acoustic impedance matches that of the body (1.38–1.99 × 10⁶ kg s⁻¹ m⁻²) reasonably well, making it attractive as next-generation biocompatible piezoelectric devices for health monitoring and “disposable” invasive medical ultrasound imaging.

A small-molecule organic ferroelectric (3,3-DFCBA)Cl has high piezoelectric voltage coefficients g₃₃ (437.2 × 10⁻³ V m N⁻¹), a large electrostriction coefficient Q₃₃, and low acoustic impedance z₀, far beyond that of PZT and PVDF.

H/F Substitution on the Spacer Cations Leads to 1D-to-2D Increment of the Pyrrolidinium-Containing Lead Iodide Hybrid Perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged as multifunctional materials with remarkable optical and electronic properties. In particular, 2D-layered lead iodide-based HOIPs possess great practical application potential in the photoelectric field. In this work, we report H/F substitution-induced 1D-to-2D increment of lead iodide HOIPs. The enantiomeric HOIPs, S- and R-FPPbI₃ (FP = 3-fluoropyrrolidinium), were achieved by monofluoride substitution on the spacer cations of the parent HOIP, PyPbI₃ (Py = pyrrolidinium), showing mirror image structural relationship and reversible solid-state phase transition. A 2D-layered HOIP, (DFP)₂PbI₄ (DFP = 3,3-difluoropyrrolidinium), was achieved with a low band gap of 2.09 eV through difluoride substitution, thanks to the expansion of the Pb-I network from 1D to 2D. This work highlights the exploration of 1D chiral and 2D-layered HOIP materials with reversible phase transitions through H/F substitution strategies.

Polarity and Ferromagnetism in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Copper Perovskites with Chlorinated Aromatic Spacers

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid copper halide perovskites have drawn tremendous attention as promising multifunctional materials. Herein, by incorporating ortho-, meta-, and para-chlorine substitutions in the benzylamine structure, we first report the influence of positional isomerism on the crystal structures of chlorobenzylammonium copper(II) chloride perovskites A₂CuCl₄. 2D polar ferromagnets (3-ClbaH)₂CuCl₄ and (4-ClbaH)₂CuCl₄ (ClbaH⁺ = chlorobenzylammonium) are successfully obtained. They both adopt a polar monoclinic space group Cc at room temperature, displaying significant differences in crystal structures. In contrast, (2-ClbaH)₂CuCl₄ adopts a centrosymmetric space group P 2₁/ c at room temperature. This associated structural evolution successfully enhances the physical properties of the two polar compounds with high thermal stability, discernible second harmonic generation (SHG) signals, ferromagnetism, and narrow optical band gaps. These findings demonstrate that the introduction of chlorine atoms into the interlayer organic species is a powerful tool to tune crystal symmetries and physical properties, and this inspires further exploration of designing high-performance multifunctional copper-based materials.

H/F Substitution induced switchable coordination bonds in a cyano-bridged hybrid double perovskite ferroelastic

A three-dimensional cyano-bridged double perovskite ferroelastic [(CH₃)₃NCH₂F]₂[KFe(CN)₆] was constructed by introducing unprecedented switchable C-F-K coordination bonds. H/F substitution not only preserves the basic structure of the parent [(CH₃)₄N]₂[KFe(CN)₆] but also affords an m3̄mF2/m-type ferroelastic phase transition.

Multifunctional Chiral 2D Lead Halide Perovskites with Circularly Polarized Photoluminescence and Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Properties

Introducing the chiral spacers to two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) enables them to exhibit circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPPL), which could have applications in chiral-optics and spintronics. Despite that a great deal of effort has been made in this field, the reported polarization degree of CPPL at ambient conditions is still very limited, and the integration of multiple functionalities also remains to be explored. Here we report the structures, CPPL, and piezoelectric energy harvesting properties of chiral 2D LHPs, [R-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylaminium]₂PbI₄ (R-[BPEA]₂PbI₄) and [S-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylaminium]₂PbI₄ (S-[BPEA]₂PbI₄). Our results show that these chiral perovskites are direct bandgap semiconductors and exhibit CPPL centered at ∼513 nm with a maximum degree of polarization of up to 11.0% at room temperature. In addition, the unique configurational arrangement of the chiral spacers is found to be able to reduce the interlayer π-π interactions and consequently result in strong electron-phonon coupling. Furthermore, the intrinsic chirality of both R-[BPEA]₂PbI₄ and S-[BPEA]₂PbI₄ enables them to be piezoelectric active, and their composite films can be applied to generate voltages and currents up to ∼0.6 V and ∼1.5 μA under periodic impacting with a strength of 2 N, respectively. This work not only reports a high degree of CPPL but also demonstrates piezoelectric energy harvesting behavior for realizing multifunctionalities in chiral 2D LHPs.

Neutral 1D Perovskite-Type ABX3 Phase Transition Material with a Narrowband Emission and Semiconductor Property

Cyclic organic amines are emerging as excellent building blocks to assemble organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials due to their flexible cyclic structure. Here, we have assembled a 1D organic-inorganic hybrid dielectric material C5 H6 NOPbBr3 (1) by alloying the cyclic organic amine 3-hydroxypyridine. 1 displays a remarkable switchable dielectric response induced by an order-disorder transformation of the organic moiety, this transformation behaviour is confirmed by DSC and Hirshfeld surface measurements. More interestingly, 1 has a narrowband emission (FWHM=4.64 nm) at 590 nm; FWHM is a major quality figure for narrowband photodetectors. In addition, 1 exhibits semiconducting properties with an indirect bandgap of 2.78 eV by the analysis of the UV-Vis absorption results.

Piezoelectric energy harvesting of a bismuth halide perovskite stabilised by chiral ammonium cations

A chiral Bi(iii) 1D-perovskite {[sCH(MePh)(Me)NH3][BiBr5]}n was synthesized and shown to exhibit piezoelectric polarization. Flexible polymer composites of it were prepared and utilized for the fabrication of nanogenerator devices.

The construction of a two-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid double perovskite ferroelastic with a high Tc and narrow band gap

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid double perovskites have attracted extensive research interest for their fascinating physical properties, such as ferroelectricity, X-ray detection, light response and so on. In addition, ferroelastics, as an important branch of ferroic materials, exhibits wide prospects in mechanical switches, shape memory and templating electronic nanostructures. Here, we designed a 2D phase-transition double perovskite ferroelastic through a structurally progressive strategy. This evolution is core to our construction process from 0D to 1D and AgBi-based 2D. In this way, we successfully synthesized 2D lead-free ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ (DPA = 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium) with a high Curie temperature (T_c), which shows a narrower band gap than 0D (DPA)₄Bi₂Br₁₀ and 1D (DPA)₅Pb₂Br₉. Moreover, the mechanism of structural phase transition and molecular motion are fully characterized by temperature dependent solid-state NMR and single crystal XRD. (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ injects power into the discovery of new ferroelastics or the construction and dimensional adjustment in new hybrid double perovskites.

By using a lead-free AgBi-based scheme, we successfully synthesized a two-dimensional double perovskite ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ with high T_c of 375 K and a narrow band gap of 2.44 eV, where DPA is 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium.

Stereochemical expression of ns2 electron pairs in metal halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are characterized as strongly anharmonic and dynamic lattices. While there is a consensus on the solvation-like polarization effect in these materials, whether static polarization, that is, ferroelectricity, exists or not in 3D MHPs remains controversial. In this Review, we resolve this controversy by analysing the stereochemical expression (SE) of the ns² electron pair (NSEP) on group IV metal cations. The SE-NSEP is key to lattice instability, which governs the breaking of inversion symmetry and induces ferroelectricity. The SE-NSEP is diminishingly small in commonly studied 3D lead iodide or bromide perovskites, indicating an absence of ferroelectricity. In contrast, 2D MHPs promote the SE-NSEP and produce unambiguous ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity. Irrespective of ferroelectricity, the dynamic manifestation of the SE-NSEP provides the missing link to understanding polar fluctuations and efficient dielectric screening in MHPs, thus, contributing to the long carrier lifetimes and diffusion lengths.

A Narrow Bandgap of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Bilayer Perovskite with Giant Entropy Change and Photoluminescence

The multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have potential applications in many fields, such as, semiconductor, energy storage and fluorescent device etc. Here, a 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite (IPA)₂ (FA)Pb₂ I₇ (1, IPA⁺ =C₃ H₉ NI⁺ , FA⁺ =CN₂ H₅ ⁺ ) is determined for its photophysical properties. Strikingly, 1 reveals a solid reversible phase transition with T_c of 382 K accompanied by giant entropy change of 40 J mol^-1  K^-1 . Further optical investigations indicate that 1 reveals a narrow direct bandgap (2.024 eV) attributed to the slight bending of I-Pb-I edge and inorganic [Pb₂ I₇ ]_n layer and a superior photoluminescence (PL) emission with super long lifetime of 0.1607 ms. It is believed that this work will pave an avenue to further design multifunctional semiconductors that combines energy storage and photoelectric materials.

Tuning Dielectric Transitions in Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites possessing unique two-dimensional (2D)-layered structures have been demonstrated with excellent molecular tunability and stability, especially the promising semiconductor properties for solar cell applications. In this work, three 2D lead halide organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (IAA)₂PbX₄ (IAA = isoamylammonium cation and X = Cl, Br, and I) were synthesized by employing a solution processing method and demonstrate distinct tuning solid-state phase transitions coupled with dielectric responses, as well as light absorption properties. Among the title perovskites, the phase transition temperature decreases gradually, and their band gap also indicates a narrowing trend. The results are mainly derived from slight changes in the crystal structure by halogen regulation. These findings might provide an effective crystal engineering strategy for exploring high-performance functional perovskite materials.

The Role of Fluorine-Substituted Positions on the Phase Transition in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Compounds

Although research on organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) has grown exponentially in the past two decades, the high phase transition temperature of OIHP materials is still one of the insurmountable difficulties. Herein, a series of A₂BX₄ type OIHP materials [(2,n-DFBA)₂PbCl₄] (n = 3, for 1; n = 4, for 2; n = 5, for 3; n = 6, for 4) have been prepared by reactions of double-substituted difluorobenzylamine (difluorobenzylamine = DFBA) with lead chloride in concentrated HCl aqueous solution. It was found the OIHP compounds 1-3 proceed a switchable phase transition with phase transition temperatures (T_c) at 449 K (1), 462 K (2) and 500 K (3), higher than that of the parent compound [(BA)₂PbCl₄] (BA = benzylammonium) at 438 K, but compound 4 exhibits no phase transition. A crystal structure analysis elucidated that the organic template ligands DFBA lead in the inorganic part in compounds 1-3 to a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite structure, while that in compound 4 leads to a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure. The different double-substituted positions of fluorine atoms on benzylamine have important influences on the phase transition in compounds 1-4.

Effective Piezo-Phototronic Enhancement of Flexible Photodetectors Based on 2D Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric Single-Crystalline Thin-Films

2D hybrid perovskites are very attractive for optoelectronic applications because of their numerous exceptional properties. The emerging 2D perovskite ferroelectrics, in which are the coupling of spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric effects, as well as photoexcitation and semiconductor behaviors, have great appeal in the field of piezo-phototronics that enable to effectively improve the performance of optoelectronic devices via modulating the electro-optical processes. However, current studies on 2D perovskite ferroelectrics focus on bulk ceramics that cannot endure irregular mechanical deformation and limit their application in flexible optoelectronics and piezo-phototronics. Herein, we synthesize ferroelectric EA₄ Pb₃ Br₁₀ single-crystalline thin-films (SCFs) for integration into flexible photodetectors. The in-plane multiaxial ferroelectricity is evident within the EA₄ Pb₃ Br₁₀ SCFs through systematic characterizations. Flexible photodetectors based on EA₄ Pb₃ Br₁₀ SCFs are achieved with an impressive photodetection performance. More importantly, optoelectronic EA₄ Pb₃ Br₁₀ SCFs incorporated with in-plane ferroelectric polarization and effective piezoelectric coefficient show great promise for the observation of piezo-phototronic effect, which is capable of greatly enhancing the photodetector performance. Under external strains, the responsivity of the flexible photodetectors can be modulated by piezo-phototronic effect with a remarkable enhancement up to 284%. Our findings shed light on the piezo-phototronic devices and offer a promising avenue to broaden functionalities of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics.

A Microstructural Analysis of 2D Halide Perovskites: Stability and Functionality

Recent observations have demonstrated that the photoelectric conversion properties of perovskite materials are intimately related to the presence of superlattice structures and other unusual nanoscale features in them. The low-dimensional or mixed-dimensional halide perovskite families are found to be more efficient materials for device application than three-dimensional halide perovskites. The emergence of perovskite solar cells has revolutionized the solar cell industry because of their flexible architecture and rapidly increased efficiency. Tuning the dielectric constant and charge separation are the main objectives in designing a photovoltaic device that can be explored using the two-dimensional perovskite family. Thus, revisiting the fundamental properties of perovskite crystals could reveal further possibilities for recognizing these improvements toward device functionality. In this context, this review discusses the material properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites and related optoelectronic devices, aiming particularly for solar cell applications.

PFM (piezoresponse force microscopy)-aided design for molecular ferroelectrics

With prosperity, decay, and another spring, molecular ferroelectrics have passed a hundred years since Valasek first discovered ferroelectricity in the molecular compound Rochelle salt. Recently, the proposal of ferroelectrochemistry has injected new vigor into this century-old research field. It should be highlighted that piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique, as a non-destructive imaging and manipulation method for ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, can significantly speed up the design rate of molecular ferroelectrics as well as enhance the ferroelectric and piezoelectric performances relying on domain engineering. Herein, we provide a brief review of the contribution of the PFM technique toward assisting the design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics. Relying on the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crystallography, together with other physical characteristics such as domain switching and piezoelectricity, we believe that the PFM technique can be effectively applied to assist the design of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics equipped with multifunctionality, and thereby facilitate their practical utilization in optics, electronics, magnetics, thermotics, and mechanics among others.
