A Spider-Silk-Inspired Wet Adhesive with Supercold Tolerance

A solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive

Ultra-low temperature resistant adhesive is highly desired yet scarce for material adhesion for the potential usage in Arctic/Antarctic or outer space exploration. Here we develop a solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive with excellent adhesion strength and organic solvent stability, wide tolerable temperature range (i.e. -196 to 55 °C), long-lasting adhesion effect ( > 60 days, -196 °C) that exceeds the classic commercial hot melt adhesives. Furthermore, combine experimental results with theoretical calculations, the strong interaction energy between polyoxometalate and polymer is the main factor for the low-temperature tolerant adhesive, possessing enhanced cohesion strength, suppressed polymer crystallization and volumetric contraction. Notably, manufacturing at scale can be easily achieved by the facile scale-up solvent-free processing, showing much potential towards practical application in Arctic/Antarctic or planetary exploration.

Spider-silk-inspired strong and tough hydrogel fibers with anti-freezing and water retention properties

Ideal hydrogel fibers with high toughness and environmental tolerance are indispensable for their long-term application in flexible electronics as actuating and sensing elements. However, current hydrogel fibers exhibit poor mechanical properties and environmental instability due to their intrinsically weak molecular (chain) interactions. Inspired by the multilevel adjustment of spider silk network structure by ions, bionic hydrogel fibers with elaborated ionic crosslinking and crystalline domains are constructed. Bionic hydrogel fibers show a toughness of 162.25 ± 21.99 megajoules per cubic meter, comparable to that of spider silks. The demonstrated bionic structural engineering strategy can be generalized to other polymers and inorganic salts for fabricating hydrogel fibers with broadly tunable mechanical properties. In addition, the introduction of inorganic salt/glycerol/water ternary solvent during constructing bionic structures endows hydrogel fibers with anti-freezing, water retention, and self-regeneration properties. This work provides ideas to fabricate hydrogel fibers with high mechanical properties and stability for flexible electronics.

Liquid Metal-Polymer Conductor-Based Conformal Cyborg Devices

Gallium-based liquid metal (LM) exhibits exceptional properties such as high conductivity and biocompatibility, rendering it highly valuable for the development of conformal bioelectronics. When combined with polymers, liquid metal-polymer conductors (MPC) offer a versatile platform for fabricating conformal cyborg devices, enabling functions such as sensing, restoration, and augmentation within the human body. This review focuses on the synthesis, fabrication, and application of MPC-based cyborg devices. The synthesis of functional materials based on LM and the fabrication techniques for MPC-based devices are elucidated. The review provides a comprehensive overview of MPC-based cyborg devices, encompassing their applications in sensing diverse signals, therapeutic interventions, and augmentation. The objective of this review is to serve as a valuable resource that bridges the gap between the fabrication of MPC-based conformal devices and their potential biomedical applications.

Silky Liquid Metal Electrodes for On-Skin Health Monitoring

Next generation on-skin electrodes will require soft, flexible, and gentle materials to provide both high-fidelity sensing and wearer comfort. However, many commercially available on-skin electrodes lack these key properties due to their use of rigid hardware, harsh adhesives, uncomfortable support structures, and poor breathability. To address these challenges, this work presents a new device paradigm by joining biocompatible electrospun spider silk with printable liquid metal to yield an incredibly soft and scalable on-skin electrode that is strain-tolerant, conformable, and gentle on-skin. These electrodes, termed silky liquid metal (SLiM) electrodes, are found to be over five times more breathable than commercial wet electrodes, while the silk's intrinsic adhesion mechanism allows SLiM electrodes to avoid the use of harsh artificial adhesives, potentially decreasing skin irritation and inflammation over long-term use. Finally, the SLiM electrodes provide comparable impedances to traditional wet and other liquid metal electrodes, offering a high-fidelity sensing alternative with increased wearer comfort. Human subject testing confirmed the SLiM electrodes ability to sense electrophysiological signals with high fidelity and minimal irritation to the skin. The unique properties of the reported SLiM electrodes offer a comfortable electrophysiological sensing solution especially for patients with pre-existing skin conditions or surface wounds.

Complex coacervate-derived hydrogel with asymmetric and reversible wet bioadhesion for preventing UV light-induced morbidities

Protecting the skin from UV light irradiation in wet and underwater environments is challenging due to the weak adhesion of existing sunscreen materials but highly desired. Herein we report a polyethyleneimine/thioctic acid/titanium dioxide (PEI/TA/TiO2) coacervate-derived hydrogel with robust, asymmetric, and reversible wet bioadhesion and effective UV-light-shielding ability. The PEI/TA/TiO2 complex coacervate can be easily obtained by mixing a PEI solution and TA/TiO2 powder. The fluid PEI/TA/TiO2 coacervate deposited on wet skin can spread into surface irregularities and subsequently transform into a hydrogel with increased cohesion, thereby establishing interdigitated contact and adhesion between the bottom surface and skin. Meanwhile, the functional groups between the skin and hydrogel can form physical interactions to further enhance bioadhesion, whereas the limited movement of amine and carboxyl groups on the top hydrogel surface leads to low adhesion. Therefore, the coacervate-derived hydrogel exhibits asymmetric adhesiveness on the bottom and top surfaces. Moreover, the PEI/TA/TiO2 hydrogel formed on the skin could be easily removed using a NaHCO3 aqueous solution without inflicting damage. More importantly, the PEI/TA/TiO2 hydrogel can function as an effective sunscreen to block UV light and prevent UV-induced MMP-9 overexpression, inflammation, and DNA damage in animal skin. The advantages of PEI/TA/TiO2 coacervate-derived hydrogels include robust, asymmetric, and reversible wet bioadhesion, effective UV light-shielding ability, excellent biocompatibility, and easy preparation and usage, making them a promising bioadhesive to protect the skin from UV light-associated damage in wet and underwater environments.

Wet-Adaptive Electronic Skin

Skin electronics provides remarkable opportunities for non-invasive and long-term monitoring of a wide variety of biophysical and physiological signals that are closely related to health, medicine, and human-machine interactions. Nevertheless, conventional skin electronics fabricated on elastic thin films are difficult to adapt to the wet microenvironments of the skin: Elastic thin films are non-permeable, which block the skin perspiration; Elastic thin films are difficult to adhere to wet skin; Most skin electronics are difficult to work underwater. Here, a Wet-Adaptive Electronic Skin (WADE-skin) is reported, which consists of a next-to-skin wet-adhesive fibrous layer, a next-to-air waterproof fibrous layer, and a stretchable and permeable liquid metal electrode layer. While the electronic functionality is determined by the electrode design, this WADE-skin simultaneously offers superb stretchability, wet adhesion, permeability, biocompatibility, and waterproof property. The WADE-skin can rapidly adhere to human skin after contact for a few seconds and stably maintain the adhesion over weeks even under wet conditions, without showing any negative effect to the skin health. The use of WADE-skin is demonstrated for the stable recording of electrocardiogram during intensive sweating as well as underwater activities, and as the strain sensor for the underwater operation of virtual reality-mediated human-machine interactions.

Advances in the Research of Photo, Electrical, and Magnetic Responsive Smart Superhydrophobic Materials: Synthesis and Potential Applications

With the rapid advancement of technology, the wettability of conventional superhydrophobic materials no longer suffice to meet the demands of practical applications. Intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials have emerged as a highly sought-after material in various fields. The exceptional superhydrophobicity, reversible wetting, and intelligently controllable characteristics of these materials have led to extensive applications across industries, including industry, agriculture, defense, and medicine. Therefore, the development of intelligent superhydrophobic materials with superior performance, economic practicality, enhanced sensitivity, and controllability assumes utmost importance in advancing technology worldwide. This article provides a summary of the wettability principles of superhydrophobic surfaces and the mechanisms behind intelligent responsive superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, it reviews and analyzes the recent research progress on light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials, encompassing aspects such as material synthesis, modification, performance, and responses under diverse external stimuli. The article also explores the challenges associated with different types of responsive superhydrophobic materials and the unique application prospects of light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials. Additionally, it outlines the future directions for the development of intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials.

Tough and On-Demand Detachable Wet Tissue Adhesive Hydrogel Made from Catechol Derivatives with a Long Aliphatic Side Chain

Wet adhesion is critical in cases of wound closure, but it is usually deterred by the hydration layer on tissues. Inspired by dopamine-mediated underwater adhesion in mussel foot proteins, wet tissue adhesives containing catechol with 2-3 carbons side chains are reported mostly. To make wet adhesion of this type of adhesives much tougher, catechol derivatives with a long aliphatic side chain (≈10 atoms length) are synthesized. Then, a series of strong wet tissue adhesive hydrogels are prepared through photoinduced copolymerization of acrylic acid with synthetic monomers. The adhesive hydrogel has a high cohesion strength, that is, tensile strength and strain, and toughness of ≈1800 kPa, ≈540%, and ≈4100 kJ m-3 , respectively. Its interfacial toughness on wet and underwater porcine skin is respectively ≈1300 and ≈1100 J m-2 , and its adhesion strength to wet porcine skin is ≈153 kPa. These values are much higher than those of dopamine-based adhesives in the same conditions, demonstrating that the long aliphatic side chain on catechol can greatly improve the wet tissue-adhesion. Additionally, the tough interfacial adhesion can be broken on demand with 5 wt.% aqueous urea solution. This adhesive hydrogel is highly promising in safe wound closure.

Preparation of Strong and Thermally Conductive, Spider Silk-Inspired, Soybean Protein-Based Adhesive for Thermally Conductive Wood-Based Composites

The development of formaldehyde-free functional wood composite materials through the preparation of strong and multifunctional soybean protein adhesives to replace formaldehyde-based resins is an important research area. However, ensuring the bonding performance of soybean protein adhesive while simultaneously developing thermally conductive adhesive and its corresponding wood composites is challenging. Taking inspiration from the microphase separation structure of spider silk, boron nitride (BN) and soy protein isolate (SPI) were mixed by ball milling to obtain a BN@SPI matrix and combined with the self-synthesized hyperbranched reactive substrates as amorphous region reinforcer and cross-linker triglycidylamine to prepare strong and thermally conductive soybean protein adhesive with cross-linked microphase separation structure. These findings indicate that mechanical ball milling can be employed to strip BN followed by combination with SPI, resulting in a tight bonded interface connection. Subsequently, the adhesive's dry and wet shear strengths increased by 14.3% and 90.5% to 1.83 and 1.05 MPa, respectively. The resultant adhesive also possesses a good thermal conductivity (0.363 W/mK). Impressively, because hot-pressing helps the resultant adhesive to establish a thermal conduction pathway, the thermal conductivity of the resulting wood-based composite is 10 times higher than that of the SPI adhesive, which shows a thermal conductivity similar to that of ceramic tile and has excellent potential for developing biothermal conductivity materials, geothermal floors, and energy storage materials. Moreover, the adhesive possessed effective flame retardancy (limit oxygen index = 36.5%) and mildew resistance (>50 days). This bionic design represents an efficient technique for developing multifunctional biomass adhesives and composites.

Bioinspired artificial spider silk photocatalyst for the high-efficiency capture and inactivation of bacteria aerosols

Bioaerosol can cause the spread of disease, and therefore, capture and inactivation of bioaerosols is desirable. However, filtration systems can easily become blocked, and are often unable to inactivate the bioaerosol once it is captured. Herein, we reported a bioinspired artificial spider silk (ASS) photocatalyst, consisting of a periodic spindle structure of TiO2 on nylon fiber that can efficiently capture and concentrate airborne bacteria, followed by photocatalytic inactivation in situ, without a power-supply exhaust system. The ASS photocatalyst exhibits a higher capture capacity than the nylon fiber substrate and a photocatalytic inactivation efficiency of 99.99% obtained under 4 h irradiation. We found that the capture capacity of the ASS photocatalyst can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of hydrophilicity, Laplace pressure differences caused by the size of the spindle knots and surface energy gradients induced by surface roughness. The bacteria captured by the ASS photocatalyst are inactivated by photocatalysis within droplets or at the air/photocatalyst interfaces. This strategy paves the way for constructing materials for bioaerosol purification.

Tailoring micro/nano-fibers for biomedical applications

Nano/micro fibers have evoked much attention of scientists and have been researched as cutting edge and hotspot in the area of fiber science in recent years due to the rapid development of various advanced manufacturing technologies, and the appearance of fascinating and special functions and properties, such as the enhanced mechanical strength, high surface area to volume ratio and special functionalities shown in the surface, triggered by the nano or micro-scale dimensions. In addition, these outstanding and special characteristics of the nano/micro fibers impart fiber-based materials with wide applications, such as environmental engineering, electronic and biomedical fields. This review mainly focuses on the recent development in the various nano/micro fibers fabrication strategies and corresponding applications in the biomedical fields, including tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery, wound healing, and biosensors. Moreover, the challenges for the fabrications and applications and future perspectives are presented.

Structural Color Medical Patch with Surface Dual-Properties of Wet Bioadhesion and Slipperiness

Developing a self-reporting bioadhesive patch that has strong adhesion to the wet tissues and meanwhile can avoid adhering to the adjacent tissues is a current research difficulty and challenge. In this paper, inspired by the wet adhesion of spider web, slippery surface of Nepenthes, and structural color phenomena of chameleons, a novel structural color medical patch with surface dual-properties of wet bioadhesion and slipperiness for internal tissue repair based on inverse opal scaffold is presented. The adhesive surface made by poly(acrylic acid)-polyethylene glycol-N-hydroxysuccinimide ester and gelatin hydrogel can attain tough adhesion to internal wet tissues by absorbing tissue interfacial water and the covalent cross-linking between the hydrogel and tissue. Besides, the slippery surface made by liquid paraffin infused inverse opal scaffold can avoid adhesion to the adjacent tissues. It is demonstrated that the designed patch can adhere tightly to the defect tissue and improve the tissue repair without adjacent adhesion when applied in a rat model with full-thickness perforation of the stomach wall. In addition, the responsive structural color can supply a color-sensing monitoring to evaluate the adhesive and repair process. These features impart the bioinspired patch with great scientific significance and broad clinical application prospects.

Bio-macromolecular design roadmap towards tough bioadhesives

Emerging sutureless wound-closure techniques have led to paradigm shifts in wound management. State-of-the-art biomaterials offer biocompatible and biodegradable platforms enabling high cohesion (toughness) and adhesion for rapid bleeding control as well as robust attachment of implantable devices. Tough bioadhesion stems from the synergistic contributions of cohesive and adhesive interactions. This Review provides a biomacromolecular design roadmap for the development of tough adhesive surgical sealants. We discuss a library of materials and methods to introduce toughness and adhesion to biomaterials. Intrinsically tough and elastic polymers are leveraged primarily by introducing strong but dynamic inter- and intramolecular interactions either through polymer chain design or using crosslink regulating additives. In addition, many efforts have been made to promote underwater adhesion via covalent/noncovalent bonds, or through micro/macro-interlock mechanisms at the tissue interfaces. The materials settings and functional additives for this purpose and the related characterization methods are reviewed. Measurements and reporting needs for fair comparisons of different materials and their properties are discussed. Finally, future directions and further research opportunities for developing tough bioadhesive surgical sealants are highlighted.

A Bio-Based Supramolecular Adhesive: Ultra-High Adhesion Strengths at both Ambient and Cryogenic Temperatures and Excellent Multi-Reusability

Developing high-performance and reusable adhesives from renewable feedstocks is of significance to sustainable development, yet it still remains a formidable task. Herein, castor oil, melevodopa, and iron ions are used as building blocks to construct a novel bio-based supramolecular adhesive (BSA) with outstanding adhesion performances. It is prepared through partial coordination between melevodopa functionalized castor oil and Fe3+ ions. Noncovalent interactions between adherends and the catechol unit from melevodopa contribute to reinforcing adhesion, and the metal-ligand coordination between catechol and Fe3+ ions is utilized to strengthen cohesion. By combining strong adhesion and tough cohesion, the prepared BSA achieves an adhesion strength of 14.6 MPa at ambient temperature, a record-high value among reported bio-based adhesives as well as supramolecular adhesives to the best of knowledge. It also outperforms those adhesives at cryogenic temperature, realizing another record-high adhesion strength of 9.5 MPa at -196 °C. In addition, the BSA displays excellent multi-reusability with more than 87% of the original adhesion strength remaining even after reuse for ten times. It is highly anticipated that this line of research will provide a new insight into designing bio-based adhesives with outstanding adhesion performances and excellent multi-reusability.

Necrobotics: Biotic Materials as Ready-to-Use Actuators

Designs perfected through evolution have informed bioinspired animal-like robots that mimic the locomotion of cheetahs and the compliance of jellyfish; biohybrid robots go a step further by incorporating living materials directly into engineered systems. Bioinspiration and biohybridization have led to new, exciting research, but humans have relied on biotic materials-non-living materials derived from living organisms-since their early ancestors wore animal hides as clothing and used bones for tools. In this work, an inanimate spider is repurposed as a ready-to-use actuator requiring only a single facile fabrication step, initiating the area of "necrobotics" in which biotic materials are used as robotic components. The unique walking mechanism of spiders-relying on hydraulic pressure rather than antagonistic muscle pairs to extend their legs-results in a necrobotic gripper that naturally resides in its closed state and can be opened by applying pressure. The necrobotic gripper is capable of grasping objects with irregular geometries and up to 130% of its own mass. Furthermore, the gripper can serve as a handheld device and innately camouflages in outdoor environments. Necrobotics can be further extended to incorporate biotic materials derived from other creatures with similar hydraulic mechanisms for locomotion and articulation.

Small-molecule ionic liquid-based adhesive with strong room-temperature adhesion promoted by electrostatic interaction

Low-molecular-weight adhesives (LMWAs) possess many unique features compared to polymer adhesives. However, fabricating LMWAs with adhesion strengths higher than those of polymeric materials is a significant challenge, mainly because of the relatively weak and unbalanced cohesion and interfacial adhesion. Herein, an ionic liquid (IL)-based adhesive with high adhesion strength is demonstrated by introducing an IL moiety into a Y-shaped molecule replete with hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) interactions. The IL moieties not only destroyed the rigid and ordered H-bonding networks, releasing more free groups to form hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) at the substrate/adhesive interface, but also provided electrostatic interactions that improved the cohesion energy. The synthesized IL-based adhesive, Tri-HT, could directly form thin coatings on various substrates, with high adhesion strengths of up to 12.20 MPa. Advanced adhesives with electrical conductivity, self-healing behavior, and electrically-controlled adhesion could also be fabricated by combining Tri-HT with carbon nanotubes.

Bioinspired Freeze-Tolerant Soft Materials: Design, Properties, and Applications

In nature, many biological organisms have developed the exceptional antifreezing ability to survive in extremely cold environments. Inspired by the freeze resistance of these organisms, researchers have devoted extensive efforts to develop advanced freeze-tolerant soft materials and explore their potential applications in diverse areas such as electronic skin, soft robotics, flexible energy, and biological science. Herein, a comprehensive overview on the recent advancement of freeze-tolerant soft materials and their emerging applications from the perspective of bioinspiration and advanced material engineering is provided. First, the mechanisms underlying the freeze tolerance of cold-enduring biological organisms are introduced. Then, engineering strategies for developing antifreezing soft materials are summarized. Thereafter, recent advances in freeze-tolerant soft materials for different technological applications such as smart sensors and actuators, energy harvesting and storage, and cryogenic medical applications are presented. Finally, future challenges and opportunities for the rapid development of bioinspired freeze-tolerant soft materials are discussed.

Janus mucosal dressing with a tough and adhesive hydrogel based on synergistic effects of gelatin, polydopamine, and nano-clay

There are many problems and challenges related to the treatment of highly prevalent oral mucosal diseases and oral drug delivery because of a large amount of saliva present in the oral cavity, the accompanying oral movements, and unconscious swallowing in the mouth. Therefore, an ideal oral dressing should possess stable adhesion and superior tough strength in the oral cavity. However, this fundamental requirement greatly limits the use of synthetic adhesive dressings for oral dressings. Here, we developed a mussel-inspired Janus gelatin-polydopamine-nano-clay (GPC) hydrogel with controlled adhesion and toughness through the synergistic physical and chemical interaction of gelatin (Gel), nano-clay, and dopamine (DA). The hydrogel not only exhibits strong wet adhesion force (63 kPa) but also has high toughness (1026 ± 100 J m^-3). Interfacial adhesion of hydrogels is achieved by modulating the interaction of catechol groups of the hydrogel with specific functional groups (e.g., NH₂, SH, OH, and COOH) on the tissue surface. The matrix dissipation of the hydrogel is regulated by physical crosslinking of gelatin, chemical crosslinking of gelatin with polydopamine (Michael addition and Schiff base formation), and nano-clay-induced constraint of the molecular chain. In addition, the GPC hydrogel shows high cell affinity and favors cell adhesion and proliferation. The hydrogel's instant and strong mucoadhesive properties provide a long-lasting therapeutic effect of the drug, thereby enhancing the healing of oral ulcers. Therefore, mussel-inspired wet-adhesion Janus GPC hydrogels can be used as a platform for mucosal dressing and drug delivery systems. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: It is a great challenge to treat oral mucosal diseases due to the large amount of saliva present in the oral cavity, the accompanying oral movements, unconscious swallowing, and flushing of drugs in the mouth. To overcome the significant limitations of clinical bioadhesives, such as weakness, toxicity, and poor usage, in the present study, we developed a simple method through the synergistic effects of gelatin, polydopamine, and nano-clay to prepare an optimal mucosal dressing (Janus GPC) that integrates Janus, adhesion, toughness, and drug release property. It fits effectively in the mouth, resists saliva flushing and oral movements, provides oral drug delivery, and reduces patient discomfort. The Janus GPC adhesive hydrogels have great commercial potential to support further the development of innovative therapies for oral mucosal diseases.

Strong and bioactive bioinspired biomaterials, next generation of bone adhesives

The bone adhesive is a clinical requirement for complicated bone fractures always articulated by surgeons. Applying glue is a quick and easy way to fix broken bones. Adhesives, unlike conventional fixation methods such as wires and sutures, improve healing conditions and reduce postoperative pain by creating a complete connection at the fractured joint. Despite many efforts in the field of bone adhesives, the creation of a successful adhesive with robust adhesion and appropriate bioactivity for the treatment of bone fractures is still in its infancy. Because of the resemblance of the body's humid environment to the underwater environment, in the latest decades, researchers have pursued inspiration from nature to develop strong bioactive adhesives for bone tissue. The aim of this review article is to discuss the recent state of the art in bone adhesives with a specific focus on biomimetic adhesives, their action mechanisms, and upcoming perspective. Firstly, the adhesive biomaterials with specific affinity to bone tissue are introduced and their rational design is studied. Consequently, various types of synthetic and natural bioadhesives for bone tissue are comprehensively overviewed. Then, bioinspired-adhesives are described, highlighting relevant structures and examples of biomimetic adhesives mainly made of DOPA and the complex coacervates inspired by proteins secreted in mussel and sandcastle worms, respectively. Finally, this article overviews the challenges of the current bioadhesives and the future research for the improvement of the properties of biomimetic adhesives for use as bone adhesives.

Low-molecular-weight supramolecular adhesives based on non-covalent self-assembly of a small molecular gelator

Currently developed adhesives are overwhelmingly polymeric in nature. Herein, we highlight for the first time the potential of supramolecular eutectogels assembled from small molecules as robust low-molecular-weight (LMW) supramolecular adhesives in air, water and organic solvents, and under low temperatures. These supramolecular eutectogels were produced from commercial alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C_nTAB) in emerging deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which demonstrated rapid (∼2 min), robust, and tunable adhesion to both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces at room temperature in air. Moreover, high adhesion performance was maintained even in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C), underwater, and in organic solvents. A study of the structure-property relationship of these adhesives and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further clarified the assembly and adhesion mechanism of the C₁₂TAB molecules in DESs. Compared with traditional polymer adhesives and several existing examples of LMW supramolecular adhesives with solvent-free dry network structures, the spontaneous self-assembly of LMW gelators in versatile DESs provides a new strategy for the facile construction of high-strength supramolecular adhesives with gel network structures for a diverse range of harsh environments.

Supramolecular Polymeric Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive That Can Be Directly Operated at Low Temperatures

Low-temperature adhesion is ubiquitous in daily life and industry. However, most supramolecular adhesives are thermoplastic materials that require heating during the adhesion. Herein, a supramolecular approach is used to construct unique pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) that can be directly operated at low temperatures (-60 °C). Supramolecular polymerization between phytic acid (PA) and water (H) endows poly(PA-H)s with excellent mechanical properties and low temperature adhesion capacity. Poly(PA-H)s can easily be processed into PSA tapes, pastes, and particles. Poly(PA-H)s were directly adhered to various surfaces by pressing at low temperatures (0 to -60 °C). No heating or high-temperature-induced solid-liquid transition was required for the low-temperature adhesion of poly(PA-H)s. With the help of structural water units in supramolecular polymers, poly(PA-H)s showed strong, stable, and organic solvent resistant adhesion performances at low temperatures, with adhesion strength of up to 3.61 MPa at -60 °C.

Gelation of highly entangled hydrophobic macromolecular fluid for ultrastrong underwater in situ fast tissue adhesion

Although strong underwater bioadhesion is important for many biomedical applications, designing adhesives to perform in the presence of body fluids proves to be a challenge. To address this, we propose an underwater and in situ applicable hydrophobic adhesive (UIHA) composed of polydimethylsiloxane, entangled macromolecular silicone fluid, and a reactive silane. The hydrophobic fluid displaced the boundary water, formed an in situ gel, bonded to tissues, and achieved exceptional underwater adhesion strength. Its underwater lap shear adhesion on porcine skin was significantly higher than that of cyanoacrylate and fibrin glues, demonstrating excellent water resistance. The burst pressure of UIHA on porcine skin was 10 times higher than that of fibrin glue. The cytocompatible UIHA successfully sealed ruptured arteries, skin, and lungs in rats, pigs, rabbits, and dogs. Together, the gelation of highly entangled hydrophobic macromolecular fluid provided a means to prepare underwater bioadhesives with strong bonding to tissues and excellent water resistance.

Strong Dynamic Interfacial Adhesion by Polymeric Ionic Liquids under Extreme Conditions

Interfacial adhesion under extreme conditions has attracted increasing attention owing to its potential application of stopping leakages of oil or natural gas. However, interfacial adhesion is rarely stable at ultralow temperatures and in organic solvents, necessitating the elucidation of the molecular-level processes. Herein, we used the intermolecular force-control strategy to prepare four linear polymers by tuning the proportion of hydrogen bonding and the number of electrostatic sites. The obtained polymeric ion liquids displayed strong dynamic adhesion at various interfaces. They also efficiently tolerated organic solvents and ultracold temperatures. Highly reversible rheological behaviors are observed within a thermal cycle between high and ultracold temperatures. Temperature-dependent infrared spectra and theoretical calculation reveal thermal reversibility and interfacial adhesion/debonding processes at the molecular level, respectively. This intermolecular force-control strategy may be applied to produce environmentally adaptive functional materials for real applications.

Engineering Circularized mRNAs for the Production of Spider Silk Proteins

Biomaterials offer unique properties that make them irreplaceable for next-generation applications. Fibrous proteins, such as various caterpillar silks and especially spider silk, have strength and toughness not found in human-made materials. In early studies, proteins containing long tandem repeats, such as major ampullate spidroin 1 (MaSp1) and flagelliform silk protein (FSLP), were produced using a large DNA template composed of many tandem repeats. The hierarchical DNA assembly of the DNA template is very time-consuming and labor-intensive, which makes the fibrous proteins difficult to study and engineer. In this study, we designed a circularized mRNA (cmRNA) employing the RNA cyclase ribozyme mechanism. cmRNAs encoding spider silk protein MaSp1 and FSLP were designed based on only one unit of the template sequence but provide ribosomes with a circular and infinite translation template for production of long peptides containing tandem repeats. Using this technique, cmRNAs of MaSp1 and FSLP were successfully generated with circularization efficiencies of 8.5% and 36.7%, respectively, which supported the production of recombinant MaSp1 and FSLP larger than 110 and 88 kDa, containing tens of repeat units. Western blot analysis and mass spectrometry confirmed the authenticity of MaSp1 and FSLP, which were produced at titers of 22.1 and 81.5 mg · liter^-1, respectively. IMPORTANCE Spider silk is a biomaterial with superior properties. However, its heterologous expression template is hard to construct. The cmRNA technique simplifies the construction and expression strategy by proving the ribosome a circular translation template for expression of long peptides containing tandem repeats. This revolutionary technique will allow researchers to easily build, study, and experiment with any fiber proteins with sequences either from natural genes or artificial designs. We expect a significantly accelerated development of fibrous protein-based biomaterials with the cmRNA technique.

Molecular Engineering Super-Robust Dry/Wet Adhesive with Strong Interface Bonding and Excellent Mechanical Tolerance

Despite the fact that synthetic adhesives have achieved great progress, achieving robust dry/wet adhesion under harsh operating environments is still challenging. Herein, inspired from the extraordinary adhesion mechanism of nature mussel protein adhesive, the balanced design concept of co-adhesion and interfacial adhesion is proposed to prepare one kind of novel copolymer adhesive of [poly(dopamine methacrylamide-co-methoxethyl acrylate-co-adamantane-1-carboxylic acid 2-(2-methyl-acryloyloxy)-ethyl ester)] [p(DMA-co-MEA-co-AD)], named as super-robust adhesive (SRAD). The SRAD exhibits ultra-high interface bonding strengths in air (∼7.66 MPa) and underwater (∼2.78 MPa) against an iron substrate. Especially, a greatly tough and stable adhesion strength (∼2.11 MPa) can be achieved after immersing the bonded sample in water for half a year. Furthermore, the SRAD demonstrates surprising wet bonding robustness/tolerance even encountering harsh conditions such as fluid shearing, dynamic loading, and cyclic mechanical fretting. The great advantages of SRAD, such as strong interface bonding, stable wet adhesion underwater, and good mechanical tolerance, makes it demonstrate huge application potential in engineering sealants and underwater adhesion.

Hot Melt Super Glue: Multi-Recyclable Polyphenol-Based Supramolecular Adhesives

We report the rapid and facile synthesis of hot melt super glue (HMSG) via the formation of adhesive supramolecular networks between catechol or pyrogallol hydroxyl groups (-OH) of polyphenols and repeat units (-CH₂ CH₂ O-) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based on hydrogen bonds. The adhesion strength of HMSG, processed by heating-cooling of polyphenols and PEG without additional solvents, can be tuned up to 8.8 MPa via changing the molecular weight of PEG and the ratio of hydrogen bonding donors and receptors. The advantages of the reported HMSG lie in the ease and scalability of the assembly process, rapid adhesion on various substrates with excellent processability, resistance of low temperature and organic solvents, and recyclable adhesion strength. The solvent-free HMSG represents a promising adhesive supramolecular network to expand the versatility and application of polyphenol-based materials. This article is protected by copyright. Suction-Cup-Inspired Adhesive Micromotors for Drug Delivery

Micromotors have opened novel avenues for drug delivery due to their capacity for self-propelling. Attempts in this field trend towards ameliorating their functions to promote their clinical applications. In this paper, an ingenious suction-cup-inspired micromotor is presented with adhesive properties for drug delivery in the stomach. The micromotors are fabricated by using hydrogel replicating the structure of suction-cup-like microparticles, which derive from self-assembly of colloidal crystals under rapid solvent extraction, followed by loading magnesium (Mg) in the bottom spherical surface. The Mg-loaded micromotors can realize spontaneous movement due to the continual generation of hydrogen bubbles in gastric juice. The combination of unique suction-cup-like structure with excellent motion performance makes the micromotor an ideal carrier for drug delivery as they can efficiently adhere to the tissue. Moreover, benefiting from the porous structure, the hydrogel micromotors exhibit a high volume-surface ratio, which enables efficient drug loading. It is demonstrated that the suction-cup-inspired micromotors can adhere efficiently to the ulcer-region in the stomach and release drugs due to their distinctive architecture and spontaneous motion, exhibiting desirable curative effect of gastric ulcer. Thus, the suction-cup-inspired micromotors with adhesive properties are expected to advance the development of micromotor in clinical applications.

Emerging Biopolymer-Based Bioadhesives

Bioadhesives have been widely used in healthcare and biomedical applications due to their ease-of-operation for wound closure and repair compared to conventional suturing and stapling. However, several challenges remain for developing ideal bioadhesives, such as unsatisfied mechanical properties, non-tunable biodegradability, and limited biological functions. Considering these concerns, naturally derived biopolymers have been considered good candidates for making bioadhesives owing to their ready availability, facile modification, tunable mechanical properties, and desired biocompatibility and biodegradability. Over the past several years, remarkable progress has been made on biopolymer-based adhesives, covering topics from novel materials designs and advanced processing to clinical translation. The developed bioadhesives have been applied for diverse applications, including tissue adhesion, hemostasis, antimicrobial, wound repair/tissue regeneration, and skin-interfaced bioelectronics. Here in this comprehensive review, recent progress on biopolymer-based bioadhesives is summarized with focuses on clinical translations and multifunctional bioadhesives. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities such as weak adhesion strength at the hydrated state, mechanical mismatch with tissues, and unfavorable immune responses are discussed with an aim to facilitate the future development of high-performance biopolymer-based bioadhesives.

On-Site Supramolecular Adhesion to Wet and Soft Surfaces via Solvent Exchange

A series of poly(thioctic acid-catechol)s was prepared by supramolecular copolymerization of two low-molecular-weight monomers, thioctic acid (TA) and catechol (CA). The addition of a small amount of CA molecules significantly improved the adhesion ability of poly(TA) and transformed it into an applicable supramolecular polymer adhesive material. The robust adhesion of poly(TA-CA)s to soft surfaces was achieved by employing a hot-melt method. However, the supramolecular adhesion via the hot-melt method failed to perform in the presence of water. On-site supramolecular adhesion to wet and soft substrates was successfully realized through the solvent exchange behavior between water and the poly(TA-CA)s ethanol solution. Compared to the hot-melt method, the solvent exchange method displays various fascinating advantages and is suitable for adhesion conditions normally under the presence of water.

Bioinspired Underwater Adhesives

Underwater adhesives are in high demand in both commercial and industrial sectors. Compared with adhesives used in dry (air) environments, adhesives used for wet or submerged surfaces in aqueous environments have specific challenges in development and performance. In this review, focus is on adhesives demonstrating macroscopic adhesion to wet/underwater substrates. The current strategies are first introduced for different types of underwater adhesives, and then an overview is provided of the development and performance of underwater adhesives based on different mechanisms and strategies. Finally, the possible research directions and prospects of underwater adhesives are discussed.

Strategy to Fabricate a Strong and Supertough Bio-Inspired Fiber with Organic-Inorganic Networks in a Green and Scalable Way

Green and scalable production of some fibrous materials with higher fracture energy has long been the goal of researchers. Although some progress has been made in recent years in the research of materials with high fracture energy, inspired by the fiber structure of spider silk, it is still a great challenge to produce artificial fibers with extremely high toughness using a simple and green process. Here, we use the molecular and nanoscale engineering of calcium phosphate oligomers (CaP, < 1 nm) and waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) macromolecules that have strong interactions to form organic-inorganic networks just like β-sheet crystalline and flexible amorphous regions in spider silk. Through a simple and green route based on widespread paper string processing techniques, we fabricate a strong and supertough bioinspired fiber with a high strength (442 MPa), which is 7-15 times higher than the strength of counterpart PU (20-30 MPa), and a super toughness (640 MJ m^-3), which is 2-3.5 times higher than the toughness of spider dragline silk. This technique provides a strategy for industrially manufacturing spider fiber-like artificial fibers with a super toughness.

Biomimicking spider webs for effective fog water harvesting with electrospun polymer fibers

Fog is an underestimated source of water, especially in regions where conventional methods of water harvesting are impossible, ineffective, or challenging for low-cost water resources. Interestingly, many novel methods and developments for effective water harvesting are inspired by nature. Therefore, in this review, we focused on one of the most researched and developing forms of electrospun polymer fibers, which successfully imitate many fascinating natural materials for instance spider webs. We showed how fiber morphology and wetting properties can increase the fog collection rate, and also observed the influence of fog water collection parameters on testing their efficiency. This review summarizes the current state of the art on water collection by fibrous meshes and offers suggestions for the testing of new designs under laboratory conditions by classifying the parameters already reported in experimental set-ups. This is extremely important, as fog collection under laboratory conditions is the first step toward creating a new water harvesting technology. This review summarizes all the approaches taken so far to develop the most effective water collection systems based on electrospun polymer fibers.

A Universal and Reversible Wet Adhesive via Straightforward Aqueous Self-Assembly of Polyethylenimine and Polyoxometalate

The excellent adhesion of mussels under wet conditions has inspired the development of numerous catechol-based wet adhesives. Nevertheless, the performance of catechol-based wet adhesive suffers from the sensitivity toward temperature, pH, or oxidation stimuli. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop non-catechol-based wet adhesives to fully recapitulate nature's dynamic function. Herein, a novel type of non-catechol-based wet adhesive is reported, which is readily formed by self-assembly of commercially available branched polyethylenimine and phosphotungstic acid in aqueous solution through the combination of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. This wet adhesive shows reversible, tunable, and strong adhesion on diverse substrates and further exhibits high efficacy in promoting biological wound healing. During the healing of the wound, the as-prepared wet adhesive also possesses inherent antimicrobial properties, thus avoiding inflammations and infections due to microorganism accumulation.
