Abstract
A convenient design strategy opens access to neutral open-shell mixed-valence species via the redox transformation of charged stable precursors, i.e., the spiro-fused borate anions. We have implemented this strategy for the synthesis of the first neutral mixed-valence diradical: two neutral mixed-valence radical fragments were assembled via a twisted biphenyl bridge. The diradical is a crystalline solid obtained in almost quantitative yield by using a facile synthetic procedure. It is stable at room temperature in the triplet ground state with a very small singlet/triplet gap. This metal-free diradical can reversibly form five redox states. The diradical exhibits an intense IVCT band in the NIR region and can be assigned as a Class 2 Robin-Day MV (mixed valence) system with weakly interacting redox centers. Computations suggest that this diradical finds itself in a unique tug-of-war between two electron delocalization patterns, Kekulé and non-Kekulé, which gives rise to two geometric isomers that are close in energy but drastically different in spin distribution and polarity. Such bistable spin-systems should be intrinsically switchable and promising for the design of functional spin devices. The scope and limitations of the new redox-strategy for the neutral MV radicals were also tested on other types of spiro-fused borates, revealing structural factors responsible for the evolution from transient to persistent and then to stable radicals.

Abstract
The synthesis of an antiaromatic tetraoxa[8]circulene annulated with four perylene diimides (PDI), giving a dynamic non-planar π-conjugated system, is described. The molecule contains 32 aromatic rings surrounding one formally antiaromatic planarized cyclooctatetraene (COT). The intense absorption (ϵ=3.35×105 M-1 cm-1 in CH2 Cl2 ) and emission bands are assigned to internal charge-transfer transitions in the combined PDI-circulene π-system. The spectroscopic data is supported by density functional theory calculations, and nuclear independent chemical shift calculation indicate that the antiaromatic COT has increased aromaticity in the reduced state. Electrochemical studies show that the compound can reversibly reach the tetra- and octa-anionic states by reduction of the four PDI units, and the deca-anionic state by reduction of the central COT ring. The material functions effectively in bulk hetero junction solar cells as a non-fullerene acceptor, reaching a power conversion efficiency of 6.4 %.

Abstract
The conceptual connections between [4n] Hückel antiaromaticity, disjoint orbitals, correlation energy, pro-aromaticity and diradical character for a variety of extended π-conjugated systems, including some salient recent examples of nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic radicals, are provided based on their [4n]annulene peripheries. The realization of such structure-property relationships has led to a beneficial pedagogic exercise establishing design guidelines for diradicaloids. The antiaromatic fingerprint of the [4n]annulene peripheries upon orbital interactions due to internal covalent connectors gives insights into the diradicaloid property of a diversity of π-conjugated molecules that have fascinated chemists recently.

Abstract
For the creation of next-generation organic electronic materials, the integration of π-systems has recently become a central theme. Such functional materials can be assembled by supramolecular polymerization when aromatic π-systems are used as monomers, and the properties of the resulting supramolecular polymer strongly depend on the electronic structure of the monomers. Here, we demonstrate the construction of a supramolecular polymer consisting of an antiaromatic π-system as the monomer. An amide-functionalized NiII norcorrole derivative formed a one-dimensional supramolecular polymer through π-π stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions, ensuring the persistency of the conducting pathway against thermal perturbation, which results in higher charge mobility along the tightly bound linear aggregates than that of the aromatic analogue composed of ZnII porphyrins.

Abstract
Molecular nanocarbons containing heptagonal rings have attracted increasing interest due to their dynamic behavior, electronic properties, aromaticity, and solid-state packing. Heptagon incorporation can not only induce negative curvature within nanocarbon scaffolds, but also confer significantly altered properties through interaction with adjacent non-hexagonal rings. Despite the disclosure of several beautiful examples in recent years, synthetic strategies toward heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons remain relatively limited due to the intrinsic challenges of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks. In this Review, recent advances in solution-mediated and surface-assisted synthesis of heptagon-containing molecular nanocarbons, as well as the intriguing properties of these frameworks, will be discussed.

Abstract
s-Indacene is a classical non-alternant hydrocarbon that contains 12 π-electrons in a cyclic π-conjugation system. Herein, we report its nitrogen-doped analogue, 1,5-diaza-s-indacene. 1,5-Diaza-s-indacenes were readily prepared from commercially available 2,5-dichlorobenzene-1,4-diamine through a two-step transformation consisting of a palladium-catalyzed Larock cyclization with diaryl acetylenes followed by hydrogen abstraction. The thus obtained 1,5-diaza-s-indacenes exhibited distinct antiaromaticity, as manifested in clear bond-length alternation, a forbidden HOMO-LUMO transition, and a paratropic ring current. As compared to the parent s-indacene, the 1,5-diaza-s-indacenes showed higher electron-accepting ability owing to the presence of imine-type nitrogen atoms. The 1,5-diaza-s-indacene core is effectively conjugated with the peripheral aryl groups, which enables fine-tuning of the absorption spectra and redox properties. The two possible localized forms of 1,5-diaza-s-indacene were compared in terms of their energetic aspects.

Abstract
Synthesis of two dicyclopentaannelated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (PHBC) regioisomers was carried out, using nonplanar oligoaryl precursors with fluorenyl groups: mPHBC 8 with two pentagons in the "meta"-configuration was obtained as a stable molecule, while its structural isomer with the "para"-configuration, pPHBC 16, could be generated and characterized only in situ due to its high chemical reactivity. Both PHBCs exhibit low energy gaps, as reflected by UV-vis-NIR absorption and electrochemical measurements. They also show open-shell singlet ground states according to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The use of fully benzenoid HBC as a bridging moiety leads to significant singlet biradical characters (y0 ) of 0.72 and 0.96 for mPHBC 8 and pPHBC 16, respectively, due to the strong rearomatization tendency of the HBC π-system; these values are among the highest for planar carbon-centered biradical molecules. The incorporation of fully unsaturated pentagons strongly perturbs the aromaticity of the parent HBC and makes the constituted benzene rings less aromatic or antiaromatic. These results illustrate the high impact of cyclopentaannelation on the electronic structures of fully benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and open up a new avenue towards open-shell PAHs with prominent singlet biradical characters.

Abstract
Dibenzo[a,e]pentalene (DBP) is a non-alternant conjugated hydrocarbon with antiaromatic character and ambipolar electrochemical behavior. Upon both reduction and oxidation, it becomes aromatic. We herein study the chemical oxidation and reduction of a planar DBP derivative and a bent DBP-phane. The molecular structures of its planar dication, cation radical and anion radical in the solid state demonstrate the gained aromaticity through bond length equalization, which is supported by nucleus independent chemical shift-calculations. EPR spectra on the cation radical confirm the spin delocalization over the DBP framework. A similar delocalization was not possible in the reduced bent DBP-phane, which stabilized itself by proton abstraction from a solvent molecule upon reduction. This is the first report on structures of a DBP cation radical and dication in the solid state and of a reduced bent DBP derivative. Our study provides valuable insight into the charged species of DBP for its application as semiconductor.

Abstract
Quinoidal azaacenes with almost pure diradical character (y=0.95 to y=0.99) were synthesized. All compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior investigated by EPR and NMR spectroscopy, and SQUID measurements, revealing thermally populated triplet states with an extremely low-energy gap ΔEST' of 0.58 to 1.0 kcal mol-1 . The species are persistent in solution (half-life≈14-21 h) and in the solid state they are stable for weeks.

Abstract
Indolo[3,2-b]carbazole presents a π-skeleton with a remarkable electronic structure and interesting potential applications. It is, however, also associated with ambiguity and controversy. Herein, new derivatives of indolo[3,2-b]carbazole are reported and they have enabled a comprehensive study on the electronic structure of indolo[3,2-b]carbazole and the development of a new n-type organic semiconductor. Experimental and computational studies show that indolo[3,2-b]carbazole has a largely localized p-benzoquinonediimine moiety and significant antiaromaticity. When substituted with (4-silylethynyl)phenyl groups, the indolo[3,2-b]carbazole exhibits one-dimensional π-π stacking and functions as an n-type organic semiconductor in solution-processed field effect transistors.

Abstract
Indeno[1,2-b]fluorene-based [2,2]cyclophanes with 4n/4n and 4n/[4n+2] π-electron systems were prepared, and their structures were identified by X-ray crystallography. With short π-π distances around 3.0 Å, [2.2](5,11)indeno[1,2-b]fluorenophane and its precursor [2.2](5,11)indeno[1,2-b]fluorene-6,12-dionophane exhibit remarkable transannular interactions, leading to their unusual electrochemical and photophysical properties. With the aid of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, the transition from the monomeric excited state to the redshifted H-type dimeric state was first observed, correlating to the calculated excitonic energy splitting and the steady-state absorption spectra induced by charge-transfer-mediated superexchange interaction.

Abstract
Polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons containing antiaromatic four-membered cyclobutadienoids (CDB) are of great fundamental and technical interest. However, their challenging synthesis has hampered the exploration and understanding of such systems. Reported herein is a modular and efficient synthesis of novel CBD-containing acene analogues, dinaphthobenzo[1,2:4,5]dicyclobutadiene (DNBDCs), with orthogonally tunable electronic properties and molecular packing. The design also features strong antiaromaticity of the CBD units, as revealed by nucleus-independent chemical shift and anisotropy of the induced current density calculations, as well as X-ray crystallography. Tuning the size of silyl substituents resulted in the most favorable "brick-layer" packing for triisobutylsilyl-DNBDC and a charge mobility of up to 0.52 cm2 V-1 s-1 in field-effect transistors.

Abstract
Non-alternant, non-benzenoid π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) are expected to exhibit very different electronic properties from all-benzenoid PHs. Reported herein are the syntheses and physical properties of four derivatives of two azulene-fused s-indacene isomers, the diazuleno[2,1-a:2',1'-g]-s-indacene (DAI-1) and diazuleno[2,1-a:1',2'-h]-s-indacene (DAI-2). The backbone of both isomers contains 28π electrons and is a 7-5-5-6-5-5-7 fused ring system. X-ray crystallographic analysis, NMR spectra, and theoretical calculations (ACID, NICS) reveal a structure with two aromatic azulene units fused with a central anti-aromatic s-indacene moiety. All compounds exhibit open-shell diradical character and are magnetically active, but the derivatives of DAI-2 show larger radical character than the respective ones of DAI-1. Their dications were isolated in crystalline form and all experimental and theoretical analyses disclose a shift of local (anti)aromaticity along the backbone, with two aromatic tropylium rings at the termini.

Abstract
Heterogeneous catalysts have been widely used for photocatalysis, which is a highly important process for energy conversion, owing to their merits such as easy separation of catalysts from the reaction products and applicability to continuous chemical industry and recyclability. Yet, homogenous photocatalysis receives tremendous attention as it can offer a higher activity and selectivity with atomically dispersed catalytic sites and tunable light absorption. For this reason, there is a major trend to combine the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysts, in which coordination chemistry plays a role as the bridge. In this article, we aim to provide the first systematic review to give a clear picture of the recent progress from taking advantage of coordination chemistry. We specifically summarize the role of coordination chemistry as a versatile tool to engineer catalytically active sites, tune light harvesting and maneuver charge kinetics in heterogeneous photocatalysis. We then elaborate on the common fundamentals behind various materials systems, together with key spectroscopic characterization techniques and remaining challenges in this field. The typical applications of coordination chemistry in heterogeneous photocatalysis, including proton reduction, water oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction and organic reactions, are highlighted.

Abstract
The synthesis of stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids is critical for their practical material application. So far, most reported examples are based on carbon-centered radicals, which are intrinsically reactive, and there are very few examples of stable nitrogen-centered diradicaloids. In this full paper, a series of soluble and stable bis(imino)rylenes up to octarylene were synthesized on the basis of newly developed dibromorylene intermediates. It was found that from hexarylene onward, these quinoidal rylenes showed open-shell singlet ground states and could be thermally populated to paramagnetic triplet aminyl diradicals. They are stable due to efficient spin delocalization onto the rylene backbone as well as kinetic blocking of the aminyl sites by the bulky and electron-deficient 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl groups. They exhibited very different electronic structures, diradical character, excited-state dynamics, one-photon absorption, two-photon absorption, and electrochemical properties from their respective aromatic rylene counterparts. These bis(imino)rylenes represent a rare class of stable, neutral, nitrogen-centered aminyl diradicaloids.

Abstract
Of the five possible indenofluorene regioisomers, examples of a fully conjugated indeno[1,2-a]fluorene scaffold have so far remained elusive. This work reports the preparation and characterization of 7,12-dimesitylindeno[1,2-a]fluorene as a highly reactive species. Experimental and computational data support the notion of a molecule with pronounced diradical character that exists in a triplet ground state. As such, both NICS and ACID calculations suggest that the indeno[1,2-a]fluorene scaffold is weakly Baird aromatic. Reduction of the unstable red solid with Cs metal produces the dianion of the title compound, from which single crystals could be obtained and X-ray data acquired, thus fully corroborating the proposed indeno[1,2-a]fluorene hydrocarbon core.

Abstract
Acenes, heteroacenes, conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (collectively referred to in this review as conjugated polycyclic molecules, CPMs) have fascinated chemists since they were first isolated and synthesized in the mid 19th century. Most recently, these compounds have shown significant promise as the active components in organic devices (e.g., solar cells, thin-film transistors, light-emitting diodes, etc.), and, since 2001, a plethora of publications detail synthetic strategies to produce CPMs. In this review, we discuss reductive aromatization, reductive dearomatization, and elimination/extrusion reactions used to form CPMs. After a brief discussion on early methods to synthesize CPMs, we detail the use of reagents used for the reductive (de)aromatization of precursors containing 1,4-diols/diethers, including SnCl2 and iodide (I- ). Extension of these methods to carbomers and cumulenes is briefly discussed. We then describe low-valent metal species used to reduce endoxides to CPMs, and discuss the methods to directly reduce acenediones and acenones to the respective acene. In the final section, we describe methods used to affect aromatization to the desired CPM via extrusion of small, volatile molecules.

Abstract
A series of conjugated copolymers based on indeno[1,2-b]fluorene as donor unit with different acceptor units have been synthesized to explore the influences of molecular backbone planarization and acceptor electronegativity on charge transport and photovoltaic properties. Polymer incorporating 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline acceptor moiety shows poor light-harvesting capacity and inferior photovoltaic efficiency of 0.5% due to twisted geometry. By introducing the stronger acceptor thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine in polymer, intramolecular charge transfer is enhanced, giving rise to improved absorption property and photovoltaic efficiency of 1.39%. However, the polymer backbone is still twisted. When thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is incorporated as electron acceptor, the polymer exhibits a more planar molecular geometry, yielding a broader and red-shifted absorption spectrum as well as a significantly improved hole mobility of 1.46E-2 cm2 V−1 s−1. However, the photovoltaic device efficiency is only enhanced to be 1.69%. The low-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of −3.95 eV as a result of the strong electron deficiency of the DPP unit may lead to the inefficient charge dissociation and increase the charge recombination, which may give rise to the limit photovoltaic performance.
