Screened optimally tuned range separated hybrid functional for solvated low bandgap molecular systems

The description of electronic properties of low bandgap molecular system is often performed by using density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent (TD) DFT calculations with the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional, as it contains the necessary ingredients to reliably predict charge transfer excitations. However, the range separating parameter (ω) is system-dependent and its optimization, including the chemical environment, is intricate. Refaely-Abramson et al. demonstrated that the gap renormalization in molecular crystals, a ground state property, can be represented by an OT-RSH functional screened by ɛstatic [Phys. Rev. B 88, 081204(R) (2013)], the zero frequency scalar dielectric constant. In this study, we propose the use of an OT-RSH functional screened by the scalar dielectric constant in the high frequency limit (OT-sRSH), ɛ∞, an appropriate constraint for vertical ionization energies or excitations in a dielectric environment. We have performed calculations for S,N-heteroacene derivatives in tetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane. The "unscreened" OT-RSH functional tends to underestimate experimental ionization potentials (IPs) and optical gaps (Egs) by up to 1.5 and 0.5 eV, respectively. In contrast, OT-sRSH functional calculations underestimate IPs and Egs by only 0.4 and 0.2 eV. We also compared the OT-sRSH results to explicitly solvated OT-RSH functional calculations for oligothiophenes in dioxane, benzene in ammonia, and methylene blue in water. We observe that both the approaches perform similarly for weakly interacting intermolecular systems and deviate for solvent-solute interacting systems, as expected. In conclusion, the OT-sRSH functional can describe molecular systems with environmental polarization effects accurately, a step toward describing realistic molecular systems.

Tunable Regioselectivity in C-H-Activated Direct Arylation Reactions of Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrroles

In this study, regioselectively controlled direct arylation of dithieno[3,2-b:2,3'-d]pyrroles (DTPs) is reported. By carefully selecting the catalytic system, Pd source, ligand, and additives, we achieved either selective N-arylation or unprecedented β-arylation and β,β'-diarylation of the DTP core through C-H activation when reacting unsubstituted H-DTP with 9-anthracenyl halides. For N-substituted DTPs, we obtained regioselective carboxylate-assisted arylation of the α-position(s). Consequently, depending on the catalytic system and substitution at the DTP nitrogen, we successfully synthesized novel regioselectively substituted DTPs, including N-aryl, rarely reported β-aryl, β,β'-diaryl, α-aryl, and α,α'-diaryl scaffolds. These compounds can be straightforwardly prepared and further functionalized for applications as organic electronic materials.

Naphthodithiophene-Fused Porphyrins: Synthesis, Characterization, and Impact of Extended Conjugation on Aromaticity

The fusion of tetrapyrroles with aromatic heterocycles constitutes a useful tool for manipulating their opto-electronic properties. In this work, the synthesis of naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins was achieved through a Heck reaction-based cascade of steps followed by the Scholl reaction. The naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins display a unique set of optical and electronic properties. Fusion of the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F2VTP) leads to a ~20% increase in the fluorescence lifetime, which is accompanied, unexpectedly, by a more than two-fold drop in the emission quantum yield (ϕ=0.018). In contrast, fusion of the isomeric naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F3VPT) results in a ~1.5-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield (ϕ=0.13) with a concomitant ~30 % increase in the fluorescence lifetime. This behavior suggests that fusion of the porphyrin with the naphthodithiopheno-system mainly affects the radiative rate constant in the Q-state deactivation pathway, where the effects of the isomeric naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene- versus naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene-fusion are essentially the opposite. Interestingly, nucleus-independent chemical shifts analysis revealed a considerable difference between the aromaticities of these two isomeric systems. Our results demonstrate that subtle structural differences in the fused components of the porphyrin can be reflected in rather significant differences between the photophysical properties of the resulting systems.

Bisazapentalene Dication: Global Aromaticity and Open-Shell Singlet Ground State

Antiaromatic moieties fused in polycyclic π-conjugated molecules usually exhibit strong localized antiaromaticiy. Herein, we reported the synthesis and properties of a bisazapentalene dication (BAP²⁺) obtained from in situ two-electron oxidation of neutral species 8. Noteworthily, it possesses global aromaticity and an open-shell singlet ground state. This study underlines the importance of heteroatoms in determining the delocalization of π-electrons and the aromaticity of molecules in their oxidized states.

An n-Type All-Fused-Ring Molecule with Photoresponse to 1000 nm for Highly Sensitive Near-Infrared Photodetector

Most of all-fused-ring π-conjugated molecules have wide or medium bandgap and show photo response in the visible range. In this work, an all-fused-ring n-type molecule, which exhibits an ultrasmall optical bandgap of 1.22 eV and strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption with an onset absorption wavelength of 1013 nm is reported. The molecule consists of 14 aromatic rings and has electron donor-acceptor characteristics. It exhibits excellent n-type properties with low-lying HOMO/LUMO energy levels of -5.48 eV/-3.95 eV and high electron mobility of 7.0 × 10^-4  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 . Most importantly, its thin film exhibits a low trap density of 5.55 × 10¹⁶  cm^-3 because of the fixed molecular conformation and consequently low conformation disorder. As a result, organic photodetector (OPD) based on the compound exhibits a remarkably low dark current density (J_d ) of 2.01 × 10^-10  A cm^-2 at 0 V. The device shows a shot-noise-limited specific detectivity (D_sh *) of exceeding 10¹³  Jones at 400-1000 nm wavelength region with a peak specific detectivity of 4.65 × 10¹³  Jones at 880 nm. This performance is among the best reported for self-powered NIR OPDs.

Indandione-Terminated Quinoidal Compounds for Low-Bandgap Small Molecules with Strong Near-Infrared Absorption: Effect of Conjugation Length on the Properties

Low-bandgap organic semiconductors have attracted much attention for their multiple applications in optoelectronics. However, the realization of narrow bandgap is challenging particularly for small molecules. Herein, we have synthesized four quinoidal compounds, i. e., QSN3, QSN4, QSN5 and QSN6, with electron rich S,N-heteroacene as the quinoidal core and indandione as the end-groups. The optical bandgap of the quinoidal compounds is systematically decreased with the extension of quinoidal skeleton, while maintaining stable closed-shell ground state. QSN6 absorbs an intense absorption in the first and second near-infrared region in the solid state, and has extremely low optical bandgap of 0.74 eV. Cyclic voltammetry analyses reveal that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the four quinoidal compounds all lie below -4.1 eV, resulting in good electron-transporting characteristics in organic thin-film transistors. These results demonstrated that the combination of π-extended quinoidal core and end-groups in quinoidal compounds is an effective strategy for the synthesis of low-bandgap small molecules with good stability.

Advanced Acceptor-Substituted S,N-Heteropentacenes for Application in Organic Solar Cells

Ambifunctional heterpentacenes with the heteroatom sequence SSNSS in the ladder-type backbone were used either as donor or as nonfullerenic acceptor in solution-processed bulk-heterojunction solar cells. Different acceptor moieties and side chains were inserted. Synthesis and characterization of the systematically varied structural motifs provided insight in structure-property relationships. Moreover, a dimeric heteroacene was synthesized, and the optoelectronic properties were compared to those of its monomeric counterpart.

The Chemistry and Applications of Heteroisoindigo Units as Enabling Links for Semiconducting Materials

ConspectusBecause of their low-temperature processing properties and inherent mechanical flexibility, semiconducting materials are promising candidates for enabling flexible displays, renewable energy, biological sensors, and healthcare. Progress has been made in materials performance by developing judicious materials design strategies. For example, improvements in electron transport have required new electron-deficient aromatics. Among them, isoindigo (IID) is an important functional group utilized in conjugated aromatics, where the structure combines two sets of five-membered electron-withdrawing lactam rings, exhibiting enhanced solubility, excellent chemical and thermal stabilities, broad absorption, and intriguing electron affinity.In the past decade, researchers have mainly focused on IID-based materials. However, the effect of heteroatom modification of the IID core has rarely been systemically investigated. In conventional conjugated polymers, single bonds connect the monomers, leading to energetic disorder and torsion defects, while ladder-type polymers are often intractable because of their fused nature. In this regard, the molecular design of new π scaffolds based on IID is central to the development of high-performance semiconductor polymers. Especially, a complete refresh of molecular design strategies and novel conjugated polymers with unique structures are needed to circumvent the disadvantages of the conventional ladder-type polymers.In this Account, we systematically summarize our recent progress in the design, synthesis, and structure-property relationships of IID- and particularly hetero-IID-based functional materials. More specifically, starting with molecular engineering of hetero-IIDs with variable electronic effects, conjugation lengths, and numbers of heterorings, we discuss the effect of the heteroring on the absorption spectra and energy levels. Additionally, we investigate a series of electron-withdrawing substitution of IIDs and hetero-IIDs and their molecular self-assembly behavior and the device performance. Furthermore, we discuss a series of IID-bis(EDOT) copolymers with hydrophilic ethylene glycol side chains for accumulation-mode organic thin-film electrochemical transistors, in which the relationships among the molecular structure, operational stability, film morphology, and device performance were revealed. Compared with IID polymers, the HOMO levels and optical band gaps of the thiophene and thienothiophene IID copolymers markedly decrease, and these polymers exhibit ambipolar charge transport. When we further expanded the IID core to a thieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene isoindigo (TBTI) core, such as in TBTIT, bulk-heterojunction solar cells employing this polymer class as the electron donor achieved good efficiency for additive- and annealing-free device conditions. When we introduced electron-deficient pyridine on the IID core, both the LUMO and HOMO energy levels of the copolymers markedly decreased, which significantly improved the electron mobility. In addition, we compare the correlation between the polymer structures of IID and hetero-IID copolymers with thiophene and benzothiophene as comonomers and their absorption spectra and energy levels. In particular, we evaluate the planarity and the dihedral angle between the repeat units, with systematic analysis by theoretical calculations to support our design concepts. We discuss polymer designs arising from simple aldol condensation, where the rigid backbone conformation has been locked by the double bonds. Our polymers display broad absorption from the visible to the NIR-II region, and more importantly, the high electron affinities of these polymers provide a platform to realize ambient-stable electron transport in solution-processed organic thin-film transistors. These exciting results are expected to open doors to new horizons of semiconducting materials in terms of other charming applications and the design and synthesis of superior materials.

Method for the Large-Scale Synthesis of Multifunctional 1,4-Dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles

A thorough investigation has enabled the optimization of the synthesis of 1,4-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles. Although salts of such metals as vanadium, niobium, cerium, and manganese were found to facilitate the formation of 1,4-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles from amines, aldehydes, and diacetyl, we confirmed that iron salts are the most efficient catalysts. The conditions identified (first step: toluene/AcOH = 1:1, 1 h, 50 °C; second step: toluene/AcOH = 1:1, Fe(ClO₄)₃·H₂O, 16 h, 50 °C) resulted in the formation of tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles in a 6–69% yield. For the first time, very electron-rich substituents (4-Me₂NC₆H₄, 3-(OH)C₆H₄, pyrrol-2-yl) originating from aldehydes and sterically hindered substituents (2-ClC₆H₄, 2-BrC₆H₄, 2-CNC₆H₄, 2-(CO₂Me)C₆H₄, 2-(TMS-C≡C)C₆H₄) present on anilines can be appended to the pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core. It is now also possible to prepare 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles bearing an ordered arrangement of N-substituents and C-substituents ranging from coumarin, quinoline, phthalimide to truxene. These advances in scope enable independent regulations of many desired photophysical properties, including the Stokes shift value and emission color ranging from violet-blue through deep blue, green, yellow to red. Simultaneously, the optimized conditions have finally allowed the synthesis of these extremely promising heterocycles in amounts of more than 10 g per run without a concomitant decrease in yield or product contamination. Empowered with better functional group compatibility, novel derivatization strategies were developed.

Synthesis and characterization of S,N-heterotetracenes

The synthesis and optoelectronic properties of novel S,N-heterotetracenes consisting of fused heterocyclic thiophene and pyrrole rings are presented. Tetracyclic and benzannulated derivatives with a varying number and sequence of sulfur and nitrogen heteroatoms were synthesized in multistep synthetic routes. A Buchwald-Hartwig amination of brominated precursors, thermolysis of azide precursors, and a Cadogan reaction of nitro-substituted precursors were successfully applied to eventually build-up pyrrole rings to stable and soluble fused systems. The various obtained heteroatom sequences 'SSNS' (SN4), 'SNNS' (SN4''), and 'NSSN' (SN4') allowed for evaluation of structure-property relationships relative to the sulfur analogue tetrathienoacene ('SSSS'). In line with the results for the whole series of S,N-heteroacenes, we find that replacement of sulfur by nitrogen atoms in the tetra- and hexacyclic systems leads to a red-shift in absorption, a decrease in oxidation potential and energy gap. On the other hand, the replacement of a thiophene ring by benzene leads to the opposite effects.

Recent Progress in High Linearly Fused Polycyclic Conjugated Hydrocarbons (PCHs, n > 6) with Well-Defined Structures

Although polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) and their analogues have gained great progress in the fields of organic photoelectronic materials, the in-depth study on present PCHs is still limited to hexacene or below because longer PCHs are insoluble, unstable, and tediously synthesized. Very recently, various strategies including on-surface synthesis are developed to address these issues and many higher novel PCHs are constructed. Therefore, it is necessary to review these advances. Here, the recent synthetic approach, basic physicochemical properties, single-crystal packing behaviors, and potential applications of the linearly fused PCHs (higher than hexacene), including acenes or π-extended acenes with fused six-membered benzenoid rings and other four-membered, five-membered or even seven-membered and eight-membered fused compounds, are summarized.

Fused Pyrazine- and Carbazole-Containing Azaacenes: Synthesis and Properties

A new family of azaacenes has been designed and synthesized by incorporating the electron-withdrawing sp² -hybridized nitrogen of pyrazine and electron-donating nitrogen of carbazole in a molecular skeleton. Two different conjugated lengths of 8-ring aza-nonacene and 10-ring aza-undecene have been achieved by an efficient condensation reaction. The unique optoelectronic properties of these molecules were investigated using both experimental and theoretical techniques. The azaacenes show visible-region absorption and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence. These compounds can serve as hole-transport semiconductors for solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Single-crystal transistor devices of one of the aza-nonacenes exhibit hole charge transport behavior with a hole mobility of 0.07 cm² /Vs and an on/off current ratio of 1.3x10⁶ .

Synthesis of aryl-substituted thieno[3,2-b]thiophene derivatives and their use for N,S-heterotetracene construction

Fiesselmann thiophene synthesis was applied for the convenient construction of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene derivatives. Thus, new 5- or 6-aryl-3-hydroxythieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylates were obtained by condensation of 5- or 4-aryl-3-chlorothiophene-2-carboxylates, respectively, with methyl thioglycolate in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide. The saponification of the resulting esters, with decarboxylation of the intermediating acids, gave the corresponding thieno[3,2-b]thiophen-3(2H)-ones. The latter ketones were used to synthesize new N,S-heterotetracenes, namely 9H-thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indoles by their treatment with arylhydrazines in accordance with the Fischer indolization reaction.

Sulfur-Containing Bent N-Heteroacenes

A series of novel sulfur-containing bent N-heteroacenes were constructed and characterized by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. By introducing sulfur-containing groups (thio, sulfinyl, and sulfonyl) into bent azaacenes, their electronic delocalization was improved and frontier energy levels were modulated. The target products displayed tunable optical and electronic properties through altering the valence of sulfur and fused length of the azaacenes. For the first time, typical products were utilized as organic field effect transistor materials, affording promising results.

Selenophene-containing heterotriacenes by a C-Se coupling/cyclization reaction

A new novel family of tricyclic sulfur and/or selenium-containing heterotriacenes 2-4 with an increasing number of selenium (Se) atoms is presented. The heterotriacene derivatives were synthesized in multistep synthetic routes and the crucial cyclization steps to the stable and soluble fused systems were achieved by copper-catalyzed C-S and C-Se coupling/cyclization reactions. Structures and packing motifs in the solid state were elucidated by single crystal X-ray analysis and XRD powder measurements. Comparison of the optoelectronic properties provides interesting structure-property relationships and gives valuable insights into the role of heteroatoms within the series of the heterotriacenes. Electrooxidative polymerization led to the corresponding poly(heterotriacene)s P2-P4.

Influences of Structural Modification of S, N-Hexacenes on the Morphology and OFET Characteristics

Although chemical modifications on conjugated molecules are widely applied for the purpose of improving processability and device performances, the effect of the modification was far less investigated. Here, five S, N-hexacenes are studied to reveal the influences of (1) the lateral alkyl chain, (2) the terminal group (thiophene vs benzene), and (3) the end-capping phenyl group of the hexacenes on the morphology and organic field-effect transistor (OFET) performances. Crystal arrays of the hexacenes were prepared via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-assisted crystallization (PAC) prior to morphological and OFET characterizations. The lattice structures and crystal quality of the hexacenes were evaluated by microscopy and diffraction techniques including single-crystal diffractometer, electron diffraction, and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The systematic analyses led to the following conclusions: (1) the bulkier alkyl side chain assists to form more densely packed crystals with less structural defects; (2) the terminal thiophene rings bring about higher-lying E_HOMO, more ordered phase, and crystal orientation, whereas the terminal benzene rings deteriorate the structural order of the active layer and result in the liquid crystal phase; and (3) the phenyl end caps ameliorate the morphological order, intermolecular overlapping, thermal stability and elevate E_HOMO. Thus, EH-DTPTt-Ph delivers the highest μ_h, contributing to high-lying E_HOMO, well-oriented crystal array with a longer correlation length, and suitable lattice orientation. This systematic research provides the aspects about the effects of the functionalized S, N-hexacenes on the morphology and OFET characteristics, which is anticipated to be useful for the molecular design of heteroacenes.

Versatile Dibenzothio[seleno]phenes via Hexadehydro-Diels-Alder Domino Cyclization

A facile strategy to synthesize highly substituted dibenzoselenophenes and dibenzothiophenes by a domino hexadehydro-Diels–Alder reaction is reported in this article. The formation of three new C–C bonds, one new Caryl–Se/Caryl–S bond, and C–H σ-bond migration via one-pot multiterminal cycloaddition reactions were involved in over three transformations. The target tetracyclic compounds were prepared from tetraynes with a triphenylphosphine selenide or triphenylphosphine sulfide. This reaction played a pivotal role in constructing natural thio[seleno]phene cores, which were highly substituted, and is a robust method for producing fused heterocycles.

Phosphindole fused pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles: a new single-molecule junction for charge transport

A new family of phosphindole fused ladder-type heteroacenes with a pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core were synthesized and characterized, which show good luminescence efficiency, high thermostability and tunable conductance.

Covalent and Noncovalent Approaches to Rigid Coplanar π-Conjugated Molecules and Macromolecules

Molecular conformation and rigidity are essential factors in determining the properties of individual molecules, the associated supramolecular assemblies, and bulk materials. This correlation is particularly important for π-conjugated molecular and macromolecular systems. Within such an individual molecule, a coplanar conformation facilitates the delocalization of not only molecular orbitals but also charges, excitons, and spins, leading to synergistically ensembled properties of the entire conjugated system. A rigid backbone, meanwhile, imposes a high energy cost to disrupt such a favorable conformation, ensuring the robustness and persistence of coplanarity. From a supramolecular and material point of view, coplanarity and rigidity often promote strong intermolecular electronic coupling and reduce the energy barrier for the intermolecular transport of charges, excitons, and phonons, affording advanced materials properties in bulk. In this context, pursuing a rigid and coplanar molecular conformation often represents one of the primary objectives when designing and synthesizing conjugated molecules for electronic and optical applications. Two general bottom-up strategies-covalent annulation and noncovalent conformational control-are often employed to construct rigid coplanar π systems. These strategies have afforded various classes of such molecules and macromolecules, including so-called conjugated ladder polymers, graphene nanoribbons, polyacenes, and conformationally locked organic semiconductors. While pursuing these targets, however, one often confronts challenges associated with precise synthesis and limited solubility of the rigid coplanar systems, which could further impede their large-scale preparation, characterization, processing, and application. To address these issues, we developed and utilized a number of synthetic methods and molecular engineering approaches to construct and to process rigid coplanar conjugated molecules and macromolecules. Structure-property correlations of this unique class of organic materials were established, providing important chemical principles for molecular design and materials applications. In this Account, we first describe our efforts to synthesize rigid coplanar π systems fused by various types of bonds, including kinetically formed covalent bonds, thermodynamically formed covalent bonds, N→B coordinate bonds, and hydrogen bonds, in order of increasing dynamic character. The subsequent section discusses the characteristic properties of selected examples of these rigid coplanar π systems in comparison with control compounds that are not rigid and coplanar, particularly focusing on the optical, electronic, and electrochemical properties. For systems bridged with noncovalent interactions, active manipulation of the dynamic bonds can tune variable properties at the molecular or collective level. Intermolecular interactions, solid-state packing, and processing of several cases are then discussed to lay the foundation for future materials applications of rigid coplanar π conjugated compounds.

Extraordinary Redox Activities in Ladder-Type Conjugated Molecules Enabled by B ← N Coordination-Promoted Delocalization and Hyperconjugation

The introduction of B ← N coordinate bond-isoelectronic to C-C single bond-into π-systems represents a promising strategy to impart exotic redox and electrochromic properties into conjugated organic molecules and macromolecules. To achieve both reductive and oxidative activities using this strategy, a cruciform ladder-type molecular constitution was designed to accommodate oxidation-active, reduction-active, and B ← N coordination units into a compact structure. Two such compounds (BN-F and BN-Ph) were synthesized via highly efficient N-directed borylation. These molecules demonstrated well-separated, two reductive and two oxidative electron-transfer processes, corresponding to five distinct yet stable oxidation states, including a rarely observed boron-containing radical cation. Spectroelectrochemical measurements revealed unique optical characteristics for each of these reduced/oxidized species, demonstrating multicolor electrochromism with excellent recyclability. Distinct color changes were observed between each redox state with clear isosbestic points on the absorption spectra. The underlying redox mechanism was elucidated by a combination of computational and experimental investigations. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis on the neutral state, the oxidized radical cation, and the reduced dianion of BN-Ph revealed structural transformations into two distinct quinonoid constitutions during the oxidation and reduction processes, respectively. B ← N coordination played an important role in rendering the robust and reversible multistage redox properties, by extending the charge and spin delocalization, by modulating the π-electron density, and by a newly established hyperconjugation mechanism.

Synthesis of Isomeric Perylenodithiophene Diimides

Two isoelectronic dithiophene-fused perylene diimides (PDTI-1 and PDTI-2) were synthesized via a " bay-derivatization toward lateral extension" strategy. Single-crystal analysis unambiguously confirmed their unique structures and packing arrangements. The new PDTI system manifested significantly red-shifted absorptions with intense bands at 500-700 nm. Further dimerization indicated the potential of these dithiophene-fused PDIs as new building blocks for the construction of versatile rylene dyes in optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis of furo[3,2-b:4,5-b']diindoles and their optical and electrochemical properties

An efficient two-step palladium catalyzed synthesis of furo[3,2-b:4,5-b']diindoles, a hitherto unknown symmetrical heterocyclic core structure, was developed. The synthesis is based on a regioselective Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction of tetrabromofuran and subsequent double N-arylation. Selected compounds were studied with regard to their optical and electrochemical properties. The compounds show fluorescence with high quantum yields and non-reversible oxidation events. The compounds possess similar HOMO-LUMO band gaps compared to their sulfur and nitrogen analogs. Variation of the substituents hardly affects the HOMO-LUMO gap, but allows for some fine-tuning of the electron affinity and ionization potential as well as quantum yields. The compounds prepared represent interesting candidates for the development of organic electronic materials.

Molecular Ordering of Dithieno[2,3-d;2',3'-d]benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophenes for Field-Effect Transistors

Four derivatives of dithieno[2,3-d;2',3'-d']benzo[1,2-b;3,4-b']dithiophene (DTmBDT) have been synthesized to investigate the correlation between molecular structure, thin-film organization, and charge-carrier transport. Phenyl or thiophene end-capped derivatives at alpha positions of the outer thiophenes of DTmBDT present vastly different optoelectronic properties in comparison with bay-position alkyl-chain-substituted DTmBDT, which was additionally confirmed by density functional theory simulations. The film morphology of the derivatives strongly depends on alkyl substituents, aromatic end-caps, and substrate temperature. Field-effect transistors based on DTmBDT derivatives with bay-substituted alkyl chains show the best performance within this studied series with a hole mobility up to 0.75 cm²/V s. Attachment of aromatic end-caps disturbs the ordering, limiting the charge-carrier transport. Higher substrate temperature during deposition of the DTmBDT derivatives with aromatic end-caps results in larger domains and improved the transistor mobilities but not beyond the alkylated DTmBDT.

Drastic Effects of Fluorination on Backbone Conformation of Head-to-Head Bithiophene-Based Polymer Semiconductors

This study shows that the backbone conformation of head-to-head type 3,3'-dialkyl-2,2'-bithiophene can be tuned via fluorination of the neighboring benzothiadiazole (BTz). Without fluorination, the polymer backbone is highly twisted, whereas difluorination of BTz produced a coplanar backbone. Monofluorination of BTz yielded a tunable polymer backbone conformation depending on the film annealing temperature. In organic thin-film transistors, the polymer with the head-to-head linkages showed a remarkable hole mobility of >0.5 cm² V^-1 s^-1 upon attaining a planar backbone. Thus, the head-to-head linkage does not necessarily lead to backbone nonplanarity, and achieving planar conformation of 3,3'-dialkyl-2,2'-bithiophene has profound implications in materials design for organic semiconducting devices, yielding good solubility, reduced materials synthetic steps, and improved opto-electrical properties.

Fused Isoindigo Ribbons with Absorption Bands Reaching Near-Infrared

Through fusing isoindigo (IID) units at 6,7;6',7'-positions, a series of new near-infrared (NIR) absorbing and stable ribbon-like conjugated molecules, namely nIIDs in which n represents the number of IID units, have been synthesized. The optical band gaps of the molecules are lowered from 2.03 eV of 1IID to 1.12 eV of 6IID with the increase of the conjugation length. 3IID, 4IID, and 6IID have strong absorption in the NIR region and exhibit photothermal conversion efficiencies of greater than 50 % under laser irradiation at λ=808 nm.

Dibenzothienopyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole: The Missing Member of the Thienoacene Family

Dibenzothienopyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole and the corresponding bis(S,S-dioxide) were synthesized by using a concise synthetic strategy. Despite the presence of six fused aromatic rings, π-expanded pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles of this type absorb and emit at relatively short wavelengths, which reflects inefficient π conjugation due to the angular arrangement of the aromatic rings. They exhibit interesting and complex electrochemical behavior, which highlights their potential in organic electronics. Both heteroacenes undergo two-stage oxidation while retaining the independence of each 1-phenyl-1H-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b]pyrrole, which was proved by in situ electron spin resonance measurements. Interestingly, electrochemically generated dicationdiradicals are not only distributed over the pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole scaffold, but also over the phenyl substituents located on nitrogen atoms.

Extended Ladder-Type Benzo[k]tetraphene-Derived Oligomers

Well-defined, fused-ring aromatic oligomers represent promising candidates for the fundamental understanding and application of advanced carbon-rich materials, though bottom-up synthesis and structure-property correlation of these compounds remain challenging. In this work, an efficient synthetic route was employed to construct extended benzo[k]tetraphene-derived oligomers with up to 13 fused rings. The molecular and electronic structures of these compounds were clearly elucidated. Precise correlation of molecular sizes and crystallization dynamics was established, thus demonstrating the pivotal balance between intermolecular interaction and molecular mobility for optimized processing of highly ordered solids of these extended conjugated molecules.

The Design of Radical Stacks: Nitronyl-Nitroxide-Substituted Heteropentacenes

The first alkyl chain-anchored heteropentacene, dithieno[2,3-d;2',3'-d']benzo-[1,2-b;3,4-b']dithiophene (DTmBDT), mono- or disubstituted with a nitronyl nitroxide group has been prepared through a cross-coupling synthetic procedure of the corresponding dibromo-derivative (Br2-DTmBDT) with a nitronyl nitroxide-2-ide gold(I) complex. The synthesized nitroxides possess high kinetic stability, which allowed us to investigate their structure and thermal, optical, electrochemical, and magnetic properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of both mono- and diradicals revealed that the nitronyl nitroxide group lies almost in the same plane as the nearest side thiophene ring. Such arrangement favors formation of edge-to-edge dimers, which then form close π-stacks surrounded by interdigitating alkyl chains. Before melting, these nitronyl nitroxide radical substituted molecules undergo at least two different phase transitions (PTs): for the monoradical, PTs are reversible, accompanied by hysteresis, and occur near 13 and 83 °C; the diradical upon heating shows a reversible PT with hysteresis in the temperature range 2-11 °C and an irreversible PT near 135 °C. PTs of this type are absent in Br2-DTmBDT. Therefore, the step-by-step substitution of bromine atoms by nitronyl nitroxide groups changes the structural organization of DTmBDT and induces the emergence of PTs. This knowledge may facilitate crystal engineering of π-stacked paramagnets and related molecular spin devices.

Synthesis, Optoelectronic and Self-Assembly Properties of Diazadioxaacene Derivatives

Two novel diazadioxaacene derivatives (ADOP and ADOQ) have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Their single crystal analyses disclose that molecule ADOP forms a twisted topology configuration, whereas ADOQ adopts reclining-chair architecture. Both of them emit strong blue fluorescence in organic solvents. Moreover, they can self-assemble to form regular nanobelts and nanowires, respectively, via a simple surfactant-assisted method.

Spectroscopic Study of Thiophene-Pyrrole-Containing S,N-Heteroheptacenes Compared to Acenes and Phenacenes

In this study, we report a detailed spectroscopic study concerning the energy levels and vibrational structure of thiophene-pyrrole-containing S,N-heteroacenes. The aim of the study is first, to understand the differences in the photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies in this structurally similar series and second, to compare the electronic structure of S,N-heteroacenes to that of linear acenes and phenacenes, with a view to derive guidelines for the design of singlet fission materials. For S,N-heteroacenes comprising seven fused heterocyclic rings, we observe a higher PL quantum yield for derivatives with terminal thienothiophene units than for thienopyrrole-capped ones. This is assigned to a stronger tendency of the thienopyrrole-capped derivatives to form nonemissive associates in dilute solution, producing emissive excimers at higher concentration. By conducting time-resolved PL studies at 77 K, we further determine the lowest singlet and triplet energies for the S,N-heteroacenes with three, five, and seven fused rings. We show that their energies evolve with oligomer length analogously to those of phenacenes, yet in a fundamentally different way from that of linear acenes. This difference in evolution is attributed to the increasingly biradical character in acenes with increasing chain length in contrast to the S,N-heteroacenes and phenacenes.

Diacenaphthylene-fused benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophenes: polycyclic heteroacenes containing full-carbon five-membered aromatic rings

We herein report on an efficient synthesis of diacenaphthylene-fused benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophenes and demonstrate that their packing structure in the solid state depends on the substituent groups. These compounds form dimers with their radical cations in high concentration solution and exhibit good field-effect mobility.

Octaoctyl substituted fluorenophanetetraene has been synthesized and the photooxidation of the fluorenophanetetraene gives all trans linear fluorenevinylene with aldehyde end groups.

Thiophene–pyrrole containing S,N-heteroheptacenes: synthesis, and optical and electrochemical characterisation

Novel S,N-heteroheptacenes SN7a–d with a variable thiophene–pyrrole ratio and a heteroring fusion sequence were synthesized and the electronic properties were characterized.
