Microtubular Self-Assembly of Covalent Organic Frameworks

A dual-signal triple-readout optical sensing platform for α-glucosidase and β-glucosidase activity monitoring and inhibitor screening based on luminescent covalent organic framework

BACKGROUND

As promising biomarkers of diabetes, α-glucosidase (α-Glu) and β-glucosidase (β-Glu) play a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of diseases. However, there is a scarcity of techniques available for simultaneously and sensitively detecting both enzymes. What's more, most of the approaches for detecting α-Glu and β-Glu rely on a single-mode readout, which can be affected by multiple factors leading to inaccurate results. Hence, the simultaneous detection of the activity levels of both enzymes in a single sample utilizing multiple-readout sensing approaches is highly attractive.

RESULTS

In this work, we constructed a facile sensing platform for the simultaneous determination of α-Glu and β-Glu by utilizing a luminescent covalent organic framework (COF) as a fluorescent indicator. The enzymatic hydrolysis product common to both enzymes, p-nitrophenol (PNP), was found to affect the fluorometric signal through an inner filter effect on COF, enhance the colorimetric response by intensifying the absorption peak at 400 nm, and induce changes in RGB values when analyzed using a smartphone-based color recognition application. By combining fluorometric/colorimetric measurements with smartphone-assisted RGB mode, we achieved sensitive and accurate quantification of α-Glu and β-Glu. The limits of detection for α-Glu were determined to be 0.8, 1.22, and 1.85 U/L, respectively. Similarly, the limits of detection for β-Glu were 0.16, 0.42, and 0.53 U/L, respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE

Application of the proposed sensing platform to clinical serum samples revealed significant differences in the two enzymes between healthy people and diabetic patients. Additionally, the proposed sensing method was successfully applied for the screening of α-Glu inhibitors and β-Glu inhibitors, demonstrating its viability and prospective applications in the clinical management of diabetes as well as the discovery of antidiabetic medications.

Porous Organic Nanotubes: Chemistry of One-Dimensional Space

ConspectusOne-dimensional organic nanotubes feature unique properties, such as confined chemical environments and transport channels, which are highly desirable for many applications. Advances in synthetic methods have enabled the creation of different types of organic nanotubes, including supramolecular, hydrogen-bonded, and carbon nanotube analogues. However, challenges associated with chemical and mechanical stability along with difficulties in controlling aspect ratios remain a significant bottleneck. The fascination with structured porous materials has paved the way for the emergence of reticular solids such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and organic cages. Reticular materials with tubular morphology promise architectural stability with the additional benefit of permeant porosity. Despite this, the current synthetic approaches to these reticular nanotubes focus more on structural design resulting in less reliable morphological uniformity. This Account, highlights the design motivation behind various classes of organic nanotubes, emphasizing their porous interior space. We explore the strategic assembly of organic nanotubes based on their bonding characteristics, from weak supramolecular to robust covalent interactions. Special attention is given to reticular nanotubes, which have gained prominence over the past two decades due to their distinctive micro and mesoporous structures. We examine the synergy of covalent and noncovalent interactions in constructing assembly of these nanotube structures.This Account furnishes a comprehensive overview of our efforts and advancements in developing porous covalent organic nanotubes (CONTs). We describe a general synthetic approach for creating robust imine-linked nanotubes based on the reticular chemistry principles. The use of spatially oriented tetratopic triptycene-based amine and linear ditopic aldehyde building blocks facilitates one-dimensional nanotube growth. The interplay between directional covalent bonds and solvophobic interactions is crucial for forming uniform, well-defined, and high aspect ratio nanotubes. The nanotubes derive their permeant porosity and thermal and chemical stability from their covalent architecture. We also highlight the adaptability of our synthetic methodology to guide the transformation of one-dimensional nanotubes to toroidal superstructures and two-dimensional thin fabrics. Such morphological transformation can be directed by tuning the reaction time or incorporating additional intermolecular interactions to control the intertwining behavior of individual nanotubes. The cohesion of covalent and noncovalent interactions in the tubular nanostructures manifests superior viscoelastic mechanical properties in the assembled CONT fabrics. We establish a strong correlation between structural framework design and nanostructures by translating reticular synthesis to morphological space and gaining insights into the assembly processes. We anticipate that the present Account will lay the foundation for exploring new designs and chemistry of organic nanotubes for many application platforms.

Hierarchical organic microspheres from diverse molecular building blocks

Microspherical structures find broad application in chemistry and materials science, including in separations and purifications, energy storage and conversion, organic and biocatalysis, and as artificial and bioactive scaffolds. Despite this utility, the systematic diversification of their morphology and function remains hindered by the limited range of their molecular building blocks. Drawing upon the design principles of reticular synthesis, where diverse organic molecules generate varied porous frameworks, we show herein how analogous microspherical structures can be generated under mild conditions. The assembly of simple organic molecules into microspherical structures with advanced morphologies represents a grand challenge. Beginning with a partially condensed Schiff base which self-assembles into a hierarchical organic microsphere, we systematically synthesized sixteen microspheres from diverse molecular building blocks. We subsequently explicate the mechanism of hierarchical assembly through which these hierarchical organic microspheres are produced, isolating the initial monomer, intermediate substructures, and eventual microspheres. Furthermore, the open cavities present on the surfaces of these constructs provided distinctive adsorptive properties, which we harnessed for the immobilization of enzymes and bacteriophages. Holistically, these hierarchical organic microspheres provide an approach for designing multi-functional superstructures with advanced morphologies derived from simple organic molecules, revealing an extended length scale for reticular synthesis.

Design and synthesis of broadband absorption covalent organic framework for efficient artificial photocatalytic amine coupling

Developing highly active materials that efficiently utilize solar spectra is crucial for photocatalysis, but still remains a challenge. Here, we report a new donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic framework (COF) with a wide absorption range from 200 nm to 900 nm (ultraviolet-visible-near infrared light). We find that the thiophene functional group is accurately introduced into the electron acceptor units of TpDPP-Py (TpDPP: 5,5'-(2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-dioxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo [3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl)bis(thiophene-2-carbaldehyde), Py: 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene) COFs not only significantly extends its spectral absorption capacity but also endows them with two-photon and three-photon absorption effects, greatly enhancing the utilization rate of sunlight. The selective coupling of benzylamine as the target reactant is used to assess the photocatalytic activity of TpDPP-Py COFs, showing high photocatalytic conversion of 99% and selectivity of 98% in 20 min. Additionally, the TpDPP-Py COFs also exhibit the universality of photocatalytic selective coupling of other imine derivatives with ~100% conversion efficiency. Overall, this work brings a significant strategy for developing COFs with a wide absorption range to enhance photocatalytic activity.

Covalent Organic Framework/Graphene Hybrids: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

To address current energy crises and environmental concerns, it is imperative to develop and design versatile porous materials ideal for water purification and energy storage. The advent of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a revolutionary terrain of porous materials, is underscored by their superlative features such as divinable structure, adjustable aperture, and high specific surface area. However, issues like inferior electric conductivity, inaccessible active sites impede mass transfer and poor processability of bulky COFs restrict their wider application. As a herculean stride forward, COF/graphene hybrids amalgamate the strengths of their constituent components and have in consequence, enticed significant scientific intrigue. Herein, the current progress on the structure and properties of graphene-based materials and COFs are systematically outlined. Then, synthetic strategies for preparing COF/graphene hybrids, including one-pot synthesis, ex situ synthesis, and in situ growth, are comprehensively reviewed. Afterward, the pivotal attributes of COF/graphene hybrids are dissected in conjunction with their multifaceted applications spanning adsorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, and energy storage. Finally, this review is concluded by elucidating prevailing challenges and gesturing toward prospective strides within the realm of COF/graphene hybrids research.

Unveiling the Potential of Highly Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks for Water-Jet Rewritable Papers

The massive use of paper has resulted in significant negative impacts on the environment. Fortunately, recent progress has been made in the field of rewritable paper, which has great potential in solving the increasing demand for paper while minimizing its environmental footprint. In this work, we report a green and economic strategy to develop ink-free rewritable paper by introducing hydrochromic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in paper and using water as the sole trigger. When exposed to water or acidic solvents, two kinds of imino COFs change their colors reversibly from red to black. Additionally, a new visible absorption band appears, indicating that it can be transformed into another structure reversibly. This reversibility may be due to the isomerization from the diiminol to an iminol/cisketoenamine and its inability to doubly tautomerize to a diketoenamine. Specifically, we prepared the rewritable paper by loading these two COFs onto filter paper by using the decompression filtration method. When exposed to water, the paper undergoes a color change from red to black, which shows promising potential for applications in water-jet printing. Additionally, there is no significant performance degradation after 20 uses and 10 days between, further highlighting their potential as rewritable papers. To further improve its uniformity, we take the interface polymerization strategy to yield highly crystalline and more compact membranes, which are then transferred to paper to prepare writable papers. Our research has opened up a way for the application of COFs as a water-based printing material.

Boosting one-step degradation of shrimp shell waste to produce chitin oligosaccharides at smart nanoscale enzyme reactor with liquid-solid system

Chitin oligosaccharides (CTOS) possess potential applications in food, medicine, and agriculture. However, lower mass transfer and catalytic efficiency are the main kinetic limitations for the production of CTOS from shrimp shell waste (SSW) and crystalline chitin. Chemical or physical methods are usually used for pretreatment to improve chitinase hydrolysis efficiency, but this is not eco-friendly and cost-effective. To address this challenge, a chitinase nanoreactor with the liquid-solid system (BcChiA1@ZIF-8) was manufactured to boost the one-step degradation of SSW and crystalline chitin. Compared with free enzyme, the catalytic efficiency of BcChiA1@ZIF-8 on colloidal chitin was significantly improved to 142 %. SSW and crystalline chitin can be directly degraded by BcChiA1@ZIF-8 without any pretreatments. The yield of N, N'-diacetylchitobiose [(GlcNAc)2] from SSW and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) from crystalline chitin was 2 times and 3.1 times than that of free enzyme, respectively. The reason was that BcChiA1@ZIF-8 with a liquid-solid system enlarged the interface area, increased the collision frequency between enzyme and substrate, and improved the large-substrates binding activity of chitinase. Moreover, the biphasic system exhibited excellent stability, and the design showed universal applicability. This strategy provided novel guidance for other polysaccharide biosynthesis and the conversion of environmental waste into carbohydrates.

Template-Free Self-Assembly of Hollow Microtubular Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oral Delivery of Insulin

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have demonstrated versatile application potential since their discovery. Although the structure of COFs is orderly arranged, the synthesis of controllable macrostructures still faces challenges. Herein, we report, to our knowledge, the first template-free self-assembled COF-18 Å hollow microtubule (MT-COF-18 Å) structure and its use for insulin delivery that exhibits high loading capacity, gastroresistance, and glucose-responsive properties. The hollow MT-COF-18 Å was achieved by a template-free method benefiting from the mixed solvents of mesitylene and dioxane. The formation mechanism and morphology changes with insulin loading and release were observed. In Caco-2 cells, the transferrin-coated system demonstrated enhanced insulin cellular uptake and transcellular transport, which indicated great potential for oral applications. Additionally, the composites presented sustained glycemic control and effective insulin blood concentrations without noticeable toxicity in diabetic rats. This work shows that hollow microtubular COFs hold great promise in loading and delivery of biomolecules.

Sustainable remediation of pesticide pollutants using covalent organic framework - A review on material properties, synthesis methods and application

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have emerged as a potential class of materials for a variety of applications in a wide number of sectors including power storage, environmental services, and biological applications due to their ordered and controllable porosity, large surface area, customizable structure, remarkable stability, and diverse electrical characteristics. COF have received a lot of attention in recent years in the field of environmental remediation, It also find its way to eliminate the emerging pollutant from the environment notably pesticide from polluted water. This review more concentrated on the application of COF in pesticide removal by modifying COF structure, COF synthesis and material properties. To increase the adsorption ability and selectivity of the material towards certain pesticides removal, the synthesis of COF involves organic linkers with various functional groups such as amine, carboxylic acid groups etc. The COF have a high degree of stability and endurance make them suitable for intermittent usage in water treatment applications. This review manifests the novel progress where modified COFs employed in a prominent manner to remove pesticides from polluted water. Some examples of COF application in the eradication of pesticides are triformyl phenylene framework functionalized with amine groups has capacity to remove up to 50 mg/l of Organophosphorus - chlorpyrifos. COF modified to improve their photocatalytic capacity to breakdown the pesticide under visible light irradiation. COF tetraphenyl ethylene linked with carboxylic acid group shows efficient photocatalytic degradation of 90% of organochlorine insecticide endosulfan when subjected to visible light. Atrazine and imidacloprid are reduced from 100 ppm to 1 ppm in aqueous solutions by COF based on high adsorption capacity. In addition, the strategies, technique, synthesis and functional group modification design of COF are discussed.

Design and preparation of fluorescent covalent organic frameworks for biological sensing

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new class of functional solids featuring several fantastic structural characteristics, including a great diversity of building units and cross-linking patterns, precise integration of building blocks, and adjustable topology of porous architecture. In addition to the above features, some COF samples are constructed with high-density conjugated fragments, which have unique potential advantages in fluorescence imaging, and thus may have great potential applications in bioimaging. Herein, this article summarizes the recent progress in the design and preparation of fluorescent covalent organic frameworks. We investigate the systemic correlation between the structural qualities of COF networks and biological sensors. Finally, the significant advantages, major challenges, and future opportunities of fluorescent covalent organic frameworks are discussed for the development of next-generation porous materials for sensing applications.

Recent Advancements in Sensing of Silver ions by Different Host Molecules: An Overview (2018-2023)

The chemosensors act as powerful tool in the detection of metal ions due to their simplicity, high sensitivity, low cost, low detection limit, rapid photophysical response, and application to the environmental and medical fields. This review article presents an overview for the chemosensing of Ag+ ions based on Calix, MOF, Nanoparticle, COF, Calix, Electrochemical chemosensor published from 2018 to 2023. Here, we have reviewed the sensing of Ag+ ions and summarised the binding response, mechanism, LOD, colorimetric response, adsorption capacity, technique used. The purpose of this review article to provide a detailed summary of the performance of different host chemosensors that are helpful for providing future direction to researchers on Ag+ ion detection and provides path to design effective chemsosensor (simple to synthesize, cost effective, high sensitivity, with more practical application). While studying the related article literature, we came across some challenges and that has been discussed lastly and provided solutions for them.

Research Progress in Donor-Acceptor Type Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are new organic porous materials constructed by covalent bonds, with the advantages of pre-designable topology, adjustable pore size, and abundant active sites. Many research studies have shown that COFs exhibit great potential in gas adsorption, molecular separation, catalysis, drug delivery, energy storage, etc. However, the electrons and holes of intrinsic COF are prone to compounding in transport, and the carrier lifetime is short. The donor-acceptor (D-A) type COFs, which are synthesized by introducing D and A units into the COFs backbone, combine separated electron and hole migration pathway, tunable band gap and optoelectronic properties of D-A type polymers with the unique advantages of COFs and have made great progress in related research in recent years. Here, the synthetic strategies of D-A type COFs are first outlined, including the rational design of linkages and D-A units as well as functionalization approaches. Then the applications of D-A type COFs in catalytic reactions, photothermal therapy, and electronic materials are systematically summarized. In the final section, the current challenges, and new directions for the development of D-A type COFs are presented.

Boosting photocatalytic H2 evolution on UIO-66-NH2/covalent triazine-based frameworks composites by constructing a covalent heterojunction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been proved as efficient catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution, thanks to their tunable functionalities, permanent porosity, excellent visible light response, and physicochemical stability. Herein, a series of photocatalysts (termed NUBC) was fabricated by loading different amounts of Zr-UiO-66-NH2 (NU) onto a benzoic acid-modified covalent triazine-based framework (BC) based on post-synthetic covalent modification. The resulting NUBC catalysts exhibited a type-II Z-scheme heterojunction structure formed via the amide covalent bonds between the amine groups on NU and carboxyl groups on BC. The optimal loading of NU on BC is 30 wt.% (30NUBC) and the corresponding photocatalytic H2 evolution rate was 378 μmol h-1 g-1, almost 445 and 2 times than that of NU and BC, respectively. The synergistic effect between the type-II Z-scheme heterojunctions and amide bonds was conducive to boosting visible light harvesting and facilitating charge transportation and separation. Furthermore, the prepared NUBC catalysts show great reusability and stability. Overall, this work sheds light on the design of novel MOF/COF hybrid materials and provides a systematic exploration of their photocatalytic H2 evolution properties.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to syngas using metallosalen covalent organic frameworks

Metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks have recently gained attention in photocatalysis. However, their use in CO2 photoreduction is yet to be reported. Moreover, facile preparation of metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks with good crystallinity remains considerably challenging. Herein, we report a series of metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks produced via a one-step synthesis strategy that does not require vacuum evacuation. Metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks possessing controllable coordination environments of mononuclear and binuclear metal sites are obtained and act as photocatalysts for tunable syngas production from CO2. Metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks obtained via one-step synthesis exhibit higher crystallinity and catalytic activities than those obtained from two-step synthesis. The optimal framework material containing cobalt and triazine achieves a syngas production rate of 19.7 mmol g-1 h-1 (11:8 H2/CO), outperforming previously reported porous crystalline materials. This study provides a facile strategy for producing metallosalen-covalent organic frameworks of high quality and can accelerate their exploration in various applications.

Tunable metal-organic frameworks assist in catalyzing DNAzymes with amplification platforms for biomedical applications

Various binding modes of tunable metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and functional DNAzymes (Dzs) synergistically catalyze the emergence of abundant functional nanoplatforms. Given their serial variability in formation, structural designability, and functional controllability, Dzs@MOFs tend to be excellent building blocks for the precise "intelligent" manufacture of functional materials. To present a clear outline of this new field, this review systematically summarizes the progress of Dz integration into MOFs (MOFs@Dzs) through different methods, including various surface infiltration, pore encapsulation, covalent binding, and biomimetic mineralization methods. Atomic-level and time-resolved catalytic mechanisms for biosensing and imaging are made possible by the complex interplay of the distinct molecular structure of Dzs@MOF, conformational flexibility, and dynamic regulation of metal ions. Exploiting the precision of DNAzymes, MOFs@Dzs constructed a combined nanotherapy platform to guide intracellular drug synthesis, photodynamic therapy, catalytic therapy, and immunotherapy to enhance gene therapy in different ways, solving the problems of intracellular delivery inefficiency and insufficient supply of cofactors. MOFs@Dzs nanostructures have become excellent candidates for biosensing, bioimaging, amplification delivery, and targeted cancer gene therapy while emphasizing major advancements and seminal endeavors in the fields of biosensing (nucleic acid, protein, enzyme activity, small molecules, and cancer cells), biological imaging, and targeted cancer gene delivery and gene therapy. Overall, based on the results demonstrated to date, we discuss the challenges that the emerging MOFs@Dzs might encounter in practical future applications and briefly look forward to their bright prospects in other fields.

Kilogram-Scale Fabrication of a Robust Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Framework for Separating Ethylene from a Ternary C2 Hydrocarbon Mixture

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

A Thiophene Backbone Enables Two-Dimensional Poly(arylene vinylene)s with High Charge Carrier Mobility

Linear conjugated polymers have attracted significant attention in organic electronics in recent decades. However, despite intrachain π-delocalization, interchain hopping is their transport bottleneck. In contrast, two-dimensional (2D) conjugated polymers, as represented by 2D π-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (2D c-COFs), can provide multiple conjugated strands to enhance the delocalization of charge carriers in space. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of thiophene-based 2D poly(arylene vinylene)s (PAVs, 2DPAV-BDT-BT and 2DPAV-BDT-BP, BDT=benzodithiophene, BT=bithiophene, BP=biphenyl) via Knoevenagel polycondensation. Compared with 2DPAV-BDT-BP, the fully thiophene-based 2DPAV-BDT-BT exhibits enhanced planarity and π-delocalization with a small band gap (1.62 eV) and large electronic band dispersion, as revealed by the optical absorption and density functional calculations. Remarkably, temperature-dependent terahertz spectroscopy discloses a unique band-like transport and outstanding room-temperature charge mobility for 2DPAV-BDT-BT (65 cm2  V-1  s-1 ), which far exceeds that of the linear PAVs, 2DPAV-BDT-BP, and the reported 2D c-COFs in the powder form. This work highlights the great potential of thiophene-based 2D PAVs as candidates for high-performance opto-electronics.

A fluorescence biosensor based on DNA aptamers-COF for highly selective detection of ATP and thrombin

Due to their distinctive physical, chemical, electrical, and optical properties as well as their prospective uses, 2D covalent organic framework (COF) have attracted much attention. Herein, TaTPA-COF was effectively synthesized from the condensation of TTA and TFPA using a facile solvothermal method and characterized by SEM image, FT-IR spectra, and PXRD pattern. The generated bulk TaTPA-COF materials combined with DNA aptamers are utilized as the acceptor (quencher) for the highly sensitive and selective detection of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and thrombin, with a novel fluorescence biosensing platform and a proof-of-concept application.

Light-driven self-assembly of spiropyran-functionalized covalent organic framework

Controlling the number of molecular switches and their relative positioning within porous materials is critical to their functionality and properties. The proximity of many molecular switches to one another can hinder or completely suppress their response. Herein, a synthetic strategy involving mixed linkers is used to control the distribution of spiropyran-functionalized linkers in a covalent organic framework (COF). The COF contains a spiropyran in each pore which exhibits excellent reversible photoswitching behavior to its merocyanine form in the solid state in response to UV/Vis light. The spiro-COF possesses an urchin-shaped morphology and exhibits a morphological transition to 2D nanosheets and vesicles in solution upon UV light irradiation. The merocyanine-equipped COFs are extremely stable and possess a more ordered structure with enhanced photoluminescence. This approach to modulating structural isomerization in the solid state is used to develop inkless printing media, while the photomediated polarity change is used for water harvesting applications.

Carbon dioxide separation and capture by adsorption: a review

Rising adverse impact of climate change caused by anthropogenic activities is calling for advanced methods to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Here, we review adsorption technologies for carbon dioxide capture with focus on materials, techniques, and processes, additive manufacturing, direct air capture, machine learning, life cycle assessment, commercialization and scale-up.

Spherical Hydrogel Sensor Based on PB@Fe-COF@Au Nanoparticles with Triplet Peroxidase-like Activity and Multiple Capture Sites for Effective Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticides

The residues of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) have drawn worldwide increasing attention because of their potential fatal effects on human health and ecological systems. It is of great significance to develop an efficient and portable method for in-field detection of OPs. Herein, a novel core-shell nanocomposite of prussian blue@Fe-covalent organic framework@Au (PB@Fe-COF@Au) was constructed. Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in PB nanoparticle (PBNP) cores, Fe-porphyrin in COF shells, and AuNPs grown on shells all acted as peroxidase-like catalytic active sites, enabling PB@Fe-COF@Au to possess triplet peroxidase-like activity. A colorimetric, affordable, sensitive, and selective strategy was designed to detect OPs. Compared with previous reports, this sensor realized a wider linear range for chlorpyrifos of 10-800 ng mL^-1 with a relatively lower detection limit of 0.61 ng mL^-1, which was attributed to the overlapping triple catalytic sites of PB@Fe-COF@Au and triple response sites to OPs. The assay was successfully employed to detect chlorpyrifos in food and environmental samples. Moreover, to meet the demand of in-field detection for OPs, a spherical hydrogel method based on PB@Fe-COF@Au with visual, portable, and equipment-free features was fabricated. This work provides a new pathway to design and apply effective nanozymes for on-site monitoring of pesticides.

Room temperature synthesis of flower-like hollow covalent organic framework for efficient enrichment of microcystins

The morphology of nanomaterials is one of essential factors for their unique properties. Herein, a hollow covalent organic framework with a flower-like structure (HFH-COF) was synthesized at room temperature. The synthesized HFH-COF has a very large specific surface area, mesoporous structure, excellent chemical stability, and good crystallinity. The special morphology endowed HFH-COF with high specific surface area utilization and rapid mass transfer rate, resulting in faster equilibration time and better extraction performance than spherical COF (S-COF). Subsequently, combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), an efficient and sensitive method was established for microcystins (MCs) detection. The developed method has low detection limits (0.6-0.8 pg mL^-1), wide linear ranges (1.5-1000.0 pg mL^-1, R ≥ 0.9993), and acceptable reproducibility (RSD ≤ 7.6%, n = 6). Real biological samples were analyzed by the developed method, and trace levels of MC-YR, MC-RR and MC-LR were detected. The results indicate that the synthesized HFH-COF is an ideal sorbent for efficient extraction of MCs from complex biological samples.

Self-Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well-defined one-handed double-helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template-free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time-dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod-like aggregates into the double-helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor (g_lum ) up to ≈0.01.

A self-standing three-dimensional covalent organic framework film

Covalent crystals such as diamonds are a class of fascinating materials that are challenging to fabricate in the form of thin films. This is because spatial kinetic control of bond formation is required to create covalently bonded crystal films. Directional crystal growth is commonly achieved by chemical vapor deposition, an approach that is hampered by technical complexity and associated high cost. Here we report on a liquid-liquid interfacial approach based on physical-organic considerations to synthesize an ultrathin covalent crystal film. By distributing reactants into separate phases using hydrophobicity, the chemical reaction is confined to an interface that orients the crystal growth. A molecular-smooth interface combined with in-plane isotropic conditions enables the synthesis of films on a centimeter size scale with a uniform thickness of 13 nm. The film exhibits considerable mechanical robustness enabling a free-standing length of 37 µm, as well as a clearly anisotropic chemical structure and crystal lattice alignment.

Biomimetic Nanoplatelets to Target Delivery Hirudin for Site-Specific Photothermal/Photodynamic Thrombolysis and Preventing Venous Thrombus Formation

Due to the high recurrence rate and mortality of venous thrombosis, there is an urgent need for research on antithrombotic strategies. Because of the short half-life, poor targeting capabilities, bleeding complications, and neurotoxic effects of conventional pharmacological thrombolysis methods, it is essential to develop an alternative strategy to noninvasive thrombolysis and decrease the recurrence rate of venous thrombosis. A platelet-mimetic porphyrin-based covalent organic framework-engineered melanin nanoplatform, to target delivery of hirudin to the vein thrombus site for noninvasive thrombolysis and effective anticoagulation, is first proposed. Owing to the thrombus-hosting properties of platelet membranes, the nanoplatform can target the thrombus site and then activate hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species for thrombolysis under near-infrared light irradiation. The photothermal therapy/photodynamic therapy combo can substantially improve the effectiveness (85.7%) of thrombolysis and prevent secondary embolism of larger fragments. Afterward, the highly loaded (97%) and slow-release hirudin (14 days) are effective in preventing the recurrence of blood clots without the danger of thrombocytopenia. The described biomimetic nanostructures offer a promising option for improving the efficacy of thrombolytic therapy and reducing the risk of bleeding complications in thrombus associated diseases.

Single-Crystalline Imine-Linked Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks Separate Benzene and Cyclohexane Efficiently

Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are composed of structurally precise, permanently porous, layered macromolecular sheets, which are traditionally synthesized as polycrystalline solids with crystalline domain lengths smaller than 100 nm. Here, we polymerize imine-linked 2D COFs as suspensions of faceted single crystals in as little as 5 min at moderate temperature and ambient pressure. Single crystals of two imine-linked 2D COFs were prepared, consisting of a rhombic 2D COF (TAPPy-PDA) and a hexagonal 2D COF (TAPB-DMPDA). The sizes of TAPPy-PDA and TAPB-DMPDA crystals were tuned from 720 nm to 4 μm and 450 nm to 20 μm in width, respectively. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that the COF crystals consist of layered, 2D polymers comprising single-crystalline domains. Continuous rotation electron diffraction resolved the unit cell and crystal structure of both COFs, which are single-crystalline in the a-b plane but disordered in the stacking c dimension. Single crystals of both COFs were incorporated into gas chromatography separation columns and exhibited unusual selective retention of cyclohexane over benzene, with single-crystalline TAPPy-PDA significantly outperforming single-crystalline TAPB-DMPDA. Polycrystalline TAPPy-PDA exhibited no separation, while polycrystalline TAPB-DMPDA exhibited poor separation and the opposite order of elution, retaining benzene more than cyclohexane, indicating the importance of improved material quality for COFs to exhibit properties that derive from their precise, crystalline structures. This work represents the first example of synthesizing imine-linked 2D COF single crystals at ambient pressure and short reaction times and demonstrates the promise of high-quality COFs for molecular separations.

Weaving microscale wool ball-like hollow covalent organic polymers from nanorods for efficient adsorption and sensing

Microscale covalent organic polymers with a unique 3D hollow wool ball-like morphology have been woven from 1D nanorods by a cascade emulsion strategy with a large surface area (284 m² g^-1), which showed great potential for simultaneous removal (Q_max, 358.15 mg g^-1) and fluorescent detection (detection limit, 8.0 μg L^-1) of bisphenol A.

Confining enzymes in porous organic frameworks: from synthetic strategy and characterization to healthcare applications

Enzymes are a class of natural catalysts with high efficiency, specificity, and selectivity unmatched by their synthetic counterparts and dictate a myriad of reactions that constitute various cascades in living cells. The development of suitable supports is significant for the immobilization of structurally flexible enzymes, enabling biomimetic transformation in the extracellular environment. Accordingly, porous organic frameworks, including metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), have emerged as ideal supports for the immobilization of enzymes because of their structural features including ultrahigh surface area, tailorable porosity, and versatile framework compositions. Specially, organic framework-encased enzymes have shown significant enhancement in stability and reusability, and their tailorable pore opening provides a gatekeeper-like effect for guest sieving, which is beneficial for mimicking intracellular biocatalysis processes. This immobilization technique brings new insight into the development of next-generation enzyme materials and shows huge potential in healthcare applications, such as biomarker diagnosis, biostorage, and cancer and antibacterial therapies. In this review, we describe the state-of-the-art strategies for the structural immobilization of enzymes using the well-explored MOFs and burgeoning COFs and HOFs as scaffolds, with special emphasis on how these porous framework-confined technologies can provide a favorable microenvironment for mimicking natural biocatalysis. Subsequently, advanced characterization techniques for enzyme conformation, the effect of the confined microenvironment on the activity of enzymes, and the emerging healthcare applications will be surveyed.

Synthesis of stack plate covalent organic framework nanotubes using a self-assembled acid as a soft template

COF-LZU1 with nanotube-like morphology has been synthesized with high crystallinity and pore volume in the presence of trimesic acid as a template. The as-synthesized COF nanotubes consist of a stack of plates with a diameter of about 100 nm with a hollow channel inside of about 20 nm.

Landscaping Covalent Organic Framework Nanomorphologies

The practical utilization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with manipulation at the atomic and molecular scale often demands their assembly on the nano-, meso-, and macroscale with precise control. Consequently, synthetic approaches that establish the ability to control the nucleation and growth of COF crystallites and their self-assembly to desired COF nanomorphologies have drawn substantial attention from researchers. On the basis of the dimensionality of the COF morphologies, we can categorize them into zero- (0-D), one- (1-D), two- (2-D), and three-dimensional (3-D) nanomorphologies. In this perspective, we summarize the reported synthetic strategies that enable precise control of the COF nanomorphologies' size, shape, and dimensionality and reveal the impact of the dimensionalities in their physicochemical properties and applications. The aim is to establish a synergistic optimization of the morphological dimensionality while keeping the micro- or mesoporosity, crystallinity, and chemical functionalities of the COFs in perspective. A detailed knowledge along the way should help us to enrich the performance of COFs in a variety of applications like catalysis, separation, sensing, drug delivery, energy storage, etc. We have discussed the interlinking between the COF nanomorphologies via the transmutation of the dimensionalities. Such dimensionality transmutation could lead to variation in their properties during the transition. Finally, the concept of constructing COF superstructures through the combination of two or more COF nanomorphologies has been explored, and it could bring up opportunities for developing next-generation innovative materials for multidisciplinary applications.

Designed synthesis of an sp2 carbon-conjugated fluorescent covalent organic framework for selective detection of Fe3

A new fully conjugated covalent organic framework material (COF_TFPPy-ThDAN) has been synthesized via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction using 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) as the chromogenic unit and 2,2'-([2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diyl)diacetonitrile (ThDAN) as the linker. The COF_TFPPy-ThDAN has been successfully prepared under the optimized conditions and showed excellent crystallinity and chemical stability. Especially, it was able to maintain its crystallinity even when immersed under harsh conditions such as HCl (3 M) and NaOH (3 M). Meanwhile, COF_TFPPy-ThDAN exhibited good fluorescence properties, which could remain relatively stable under different pH conditions. Moreover, COF_TFPPy-ThDAN was further employed for the detection of Fe³⁺ with high sensitivity and selectivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.26 μM. COF_TFPPy-ThDAN with high stability and fluorescence is a promising material for chemical sensing.

Unveiling the Impact of Diverse Morphology of Ionic Porous Organic Polymers with Mechanistic Insight on the Ultrafast and Selective Removal of Toxic Pollutants from Water

In recent years, detoxification of contaminated water by different types of materials has received a great deal of attention. However, lack of methodical in-depth understanding of the role of various physical properties of such materials toward improved sorption performance limits their applicable efficiencies. In perspective, decontamination of oxoanion-polluted water by porous materials with different morphologies are unexplored due to a shortfall of proper synthetic strategies. Herein, systematic optimization of sequestration performance toward efficient decontamination of toxic oxoanion-polluted water has been demonstrated by varying the morphologies of an imidazolium-based cationic polymeric network [ionic porous organic polymers (iPOP-5)]. Detailed morphological evolution showed that the chemically stable ionic polymer exhibited several morphologies such as spherical, nanotube, and flakes. Among them, the flakelike material [iPOP-5(F)] showed ultrafast capture efficiency (up to ∼99 and >85% removal within less than 1 min) with high saturation capacities (301 and 610 mg g^-1) toward chromate [Cr(VI)] and perrhenate [Re(VII)] oxoanions, respectively, in water. On the other hand, the spherical-shaped polymer [iPOP-5(S)] exhibited relatively slow removal kinetics (>5 min for complete removal) toward both Cr(VI) and Re(VII) oxoanions. Notably, iPOP-5(F) eliminated Cr(VI) and Re(VII) selectively even in the presence of excessive (∼100-fold) competing anions from both high- and low-concentration contaminated water. Further, the compound demonstrated efficient separation of those oxoanions in a wide pH range as well as in various water systems (such as potable, lake, river, sea, and tannery water) with superior regeneration ability. Moreover, as a proof of concept, a column exchange-based water treatment experiment by iPOP-5(F) has been performed to reduce the concentration of Cr(VI) and Re(VII) below the WHO permitted level. Mechanistic investigation suggested that the rare in situ exfoliation of flakes into thin nanosheets helps to achieve ultrafast capture efficiency. In addition, detailed theoretical binding energy calculations were executed in order to understand such rapid, selective binding of chromate and perrhenate oxoanions with iPOP-5(F) over other nonmetal-based anions.

Facile fabrication of Tb3+-functionalized COF mixed-matrix membrane as a highly sensitive platform for the sequential detection of oxolinic acid and nitrobenzene

A novel Tb³⁺-functionalized covalent organic framework-based polymer mixed-matrix membrane (Tb³⁺@COF MMM) has been successfully fabricated by incorporating the highly stable Tb³⁺@PI-COF as filler into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solution. Compared with pure COF membrane, MMM exhibits its good flexibility, processability and high detection sensitivity. The obtained Tb³⁺@COF-MMM (M) can be employed as a highly sensitive sensing platform for the sequential detection of oxolinic acid (OA) and nitrobenzene (NB) based on a "off-on-off" process. M has performed its great selectivity, high sensitivity, and low detection limit for detecting OA with "turn-on" mechanism. Moreover, owing to the good chemical stability and anti-interference of M sensor, it is prospective to efficiently detect residues of OA in serum or river water. After the detection of M-15 toward OA, the obtained fluorescent M-15/OA exhibits the rapid quenching, facile manipulation, cycling utility and low detection limits for sensing NB solution and vapor. This work has proposed a typical case of developing flexible Ln³⁺-functionalized COF-based polymer mixed-matrix membrane as a highly sensitive sensing platform for detecting OA and NB, simultaneously revealed the applied potentiality of M for monitoring animal health and environmental pollution.

2D Covalent Organic Frameworks: From Synthetic Strategies to Advanced Optical-Electrical-Magnetic Functionalities

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging class of organic crystalline polymers with highly oriented structures and permanent porosity, can adopt 2D or 3D architectures depending on the different topological diagrams of the monomers. Notably, 2D COFs have particularly gained much attention due to the extraordinary merits of their extended in-plane π-conjugation and topologically ordered columnar π-arrays. These properties together with high crystallinity, large surface area, and tunable porosity distinguish 2D COFs as an ideal candidate for the fabrication of functional materials. Herein, this review surveys the recent research advances in 2D COFs with special emphasis on the preparation of 2D COF powders, single crystals, and thin films, as well as their advanced optical, electrical, and magnetic functionalities. Some challenging issues and potential research outlook for 2D COFs are also provided for promoting their development in terms of structure, synthesis, and functionalities.

Nanostructured Hypercrosslinked Porous Organic Polymers: Morphological Evolution and Rapid Separation of Polar Organic Micropollutants

Nanostructured hypercrosslinked porous organic polymers have triggered immense research interest for a broad spectrum of applications ranging from catalysis to molecular separation. However, it still remains a challenge to tune their nanoscale morphology. Herein, we demonstrated a remarkable variation of morphologies of triptycene-based hypercrosslinked microporous polymers starting from irregular aggregates (FCTP) to rigid spheres (SCTP) to two-dimensional nanosheets (SKTP) from three distinct polymerization methodologies, Friedel-Crafts knitting using an external crosslinker, Scholl reaction, and solvent knitting, respectively. Further, the dramatic role of reaction temperatures, catalysts, and solvents resulting in well-defined morphologies was elucidated. Mechanistic investigations coupled with microscopic and computational studies revealed the evolution of 2D nanosheets of a highly porous solvent-knitted polymer (SKTP, 2385 m² g^-1), resulting from the sequential hierarchical self-assembly of nanospheres and nanoribbons. A structure-activity correlation of hypercrosslinked polymers and their sulfonated counterparts for the removal of toxic polar organic micropollutants from water was delineated based on the chemical functionalities, specific surface area, pore size distribution, dispersity, and nanoscale morphology. Furthermore, a sulfonated 2D sheet-like solvent-knitted polymer (SKTPS) exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics (within 30 s) for a large array of polar organic micropollutants, including plastic components, steroids, antibiotic drugs, herbicides, and pesticides with remarkable uptake capacity and excellent recyclability. The current study provides the impetus for designing morphology-controlled functionalized porous polymers for task-specific applications.

Design strategies for improving the crystallinity of covalent organic frameworks and conjugated polymers: a review

Highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) or conjugated polymers (CPs) are very important and highly desirable because these materials would display better performance in diverse devices and provide more structure-property related information. However, how to achieve highly crystalline or single-crystal COFs and CPs is very challenging. Recently, many research studies have demonstrated the possibility of enhancing the crystallinity of COFs and CPs. Thus, it is timely to offer an overview of the important progress in improving the crystallinity of COFs and CPs from the viewpoint of design strategies. These strategies include polycondensation reaction optimization, improving the planarity, fluorine substitution, side chain engineering, and so on. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives are also discussed to promote the realization of highly crystalline or single-crystal COFs and CPs.

Covalent Organic Framework (COF)-Based Hybrids for Electrocatalysis: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and environment purification has long been a research priority in the past 15 years. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a burgeoning family of organic materials internally connected by covalent bonds and have been explored as promising candidates in electrocatalysis. The reticular geometry of COFs can provide an excellent platform for precise incorporation of the active sites in the framework, and the fine-tuning hierarchical porous architectures can enable efficient accessibility of the active sites and mass transportation. Considerable advances are made in rational design and controllable fabrication of COF-based organic-inorganic hybrids, that containing organic frameworks and inorganic electroactive species to induce novel physicochemical properties, and take advantage of the synergistic effect for targeted electrocatalysis with the hybrid system. Branches of COF-based hybrids containing a diversity form of metals, metal compounds, as well as metal-free carbons have come to the fore as highly promising electrocatalysts. This review aims to provide a systematic and profound understanding of the design principles behind the COF-based hybrids for electrocatalysis applications. Particularly, the structure-activity relationship and the synergistic effects in the COF-based hybrid systems are discussed to shed some light on the future design of next-generation electrocatalysts.

Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Synthetic chemists have developed robust methods to synthesize discrete molecules, linear and branched polymers, and disordered cross-linked networks. However, two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) prepared from designed monomers have been long missing from these capabilities, both as objects of chemical synthesis and in nature. Recently, new polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the unambiguous realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Here we review 2DPs and 2D polymerization methods. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged to date, which produce 2DPs either as monolayers or multilayer assemblies. We discuss the fundamental understanding and scope of each of these approaches, including: the bond-forming reactions used, the synthetic diversity of 2DPs prepared, their multilayer stacking behaviors, nanoscale and mesoscale structures, and macroscale morphologies. Additionally, we describe the analytical tools currently available to characterize 2DPs in their various isolated forms. Finally, we review emergent 2DP properties and the potential applications of planar macromolecules. Throughout, we highlight achievements in 2D polymerization and identify opportunities for continued study.

Preparation of hollow tubular TpBD COF and pod-like ZIF-8/H-TpBD COF tubes using a porous anodic aluminum oxide membrane as template

By sacrificing a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as a template, hollow tubular TpBD (H-TpBD) covalent organic framework (COF) tubes were synthesized in situ and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were creatively synthesized in situ in H-TpBD tubes at room temperature. H-TpBD COF tubes and ZIF-8/H-TpBD COF tubes were procured by using a strong base or acid to remove the AAO membrane. Then they were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, etc. Surprisingly, the obtained TpBD COF has a very small aperture (1.8 nm), thinner tube thickness (50 nm), high stability, and a smooth and homogeneous surface. And the pod-like ZIF-8/H-TpBD COF with complete tubular structure was also obtained.

Controllable Synthesis of Hollow Microtubular Covalent Organic Frameworks as an Enzyme-Immobilized Platform for Enhancing Catalytic Activity

Despite great achievement that has been made in the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise construction of COFs with well-defined nano/microstructures poses a rigorous challenge. Herein, we introduce a simple template-free strategy for controllable synthesis of hollow microtubular COFs. The obtained COFs show a spontaneous morphology transformation from a microfiber to a hollow microtubular structure when the concentrations of catalytic acid are regulated elaborately. Furthermore, the as-prepared COFs exhibit high crystallinity, well-defined hollow tubular morphology, and high surface areas (∼2600 m2/g). Taking the advantages of the unique morphological structure, the hollow microtubular COFs can serve as an ideal host material for enzymes. The resultant biocomposites show high catalytic performance and can be successfully applied to rapid and high-efficiency proteolysis of proteins. This work blazes a trail for controllable synthesis of the hollow microtubular COFs through a template-free process and expands the application of COFs as a promising platform for enzyme immobilization.

Recent advances in carbon nanotubes-based biocatalysts and their applications

Enzymes have been incorporated into a wide variety of fields and industries as they catalyze many biochemical and chemical reactions. The immobilization of enzymes on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for generating nano biocatalysts with high stability and reusability is gaining great attention among researchers. Functionalized CNTs act as excellent support for effective enzyme immobilization. Depending on the application, the enzymes can be tailored using the various surface functionalization techniques on the CNTs to extricate the desirable characteristics. Aiming at the preparation of efficient, stable, and recyclable nanobiocatalysts, this review provides an overview of the methods developed to immobilize the various enzymes. Various applications of carbon nanotube-based biocatalysts in water purification, bioremediation, biosensors, and biofuel cells have been comprehensively reviewed.

Self-assembly of anthraquinone covalent organic frameworks as 1D superstructures for highly efficient CO2 electroreduction to CH4

The design of selective and efficient covalent organic frameworks (COFs) based electrocatalysts with tunable morphology for efficient CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) to CH₄ is highly desirable. Here, two kinds of anthraquinone-based COFs (i.e., AAn-COF and OH-AAn-COF) with tunable 1D superstructures (e.g., nanofibers (NF) and hollow tubes (HT)) have been produced via Schiff-base condensation reaction. Interestingly, a rarely reported nanosheet-based self-template mechanism and a nanosheet-crimping mechanism have been demonstrated for the production of COF-based nanofibers and hollow tubes, respectively. Besides, the obtained COF-based superstructures can be post-modified with transition metals for efficient CO₂RR. Specifically, AAn-COF-Cu (NF) and OH-AAn-COF-Cu (HT) exhibit superior faradaic-efficiency with CH₄ (FE_CH4) of 77% (-128.1 mA cm^-2, -0.9 V) and 61% (-99.5 mA cm^-2, -1.0 V) in a flow-cell, respectively. Noteworthy, the achieved FE_CH4 of AAn-COF-Cu (NF) (77%) the is highest one among reported crystalline COFs. This work provides a general methodology in exploring morphology-controlled COFs for electrocatalytic CO₂RR.

Porous 2D and 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks with Dimensionality-Dependent Photocatalytic Activity in Promoting Radical Ring-Opening Polymerization

Dimensionality is a fundamental parameter to modulate the properties of solid materials by tuning electronic structures. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a prominent class of porous crystalline materials, but the study of dimensional dependence on their physicochemical properties is still lacking. Herein we illustrate photocatalytic performances of N,N-diaryl dihydrophenazine (PN)-based COFs are heavily dependent on the structural dimensionality. Six isostructural imine-bonded 2D-PN COFs and one 3D-PN COF were prepared. All can be heterogeneous photocatalysts to promote radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), which typically produces polymers with a combination of linear (l) and cyclic (c) repeat units. The 2D-PN COFs have much higher catalytic activity than the 3D-PN COF, allowing the efficient synthesis of poly(VCPs) with controlled molecular weight, low dispersity and high l/c selectivity (up to 97 %). The improved performance can be ascribed to the 2D structure which has a larger internal surface area, more catalytically active sites, higher photosensitizing ability and photoinduced electron transfer efficiency.
