Reversible Response of Luminescent Terbium(III)-Nanocellulose Hydrogels to Anions for Latent Fingerprint Detection and Encryption

Nanocellulose/scleroglucan-enhanced robust, heat-resistant composite hydrogels for oilfield water plugging

In an oil exploitation process, hydrogel plugging agents can effectively reduce the water-oil intermixing, decrease water extraction volume, and enhance oil recovery rate. The practical applications of traditional polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel plugging agents in oilfield are limited by their non-biodegradability, poor mechanical performance, and inferior temperature-resistance. This work developed a mechanically stable and high-temperature-resistant composite hydrogel (STP) by incorporating biodegradable scleroglucan (Slg) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) in the PAM hydrogel. The addition of Slg conferred heat resistance to the PAM hydrogel, while TOCN reinforced the mechanical strength. Anti-aging analyses revealed that the STP endured for 108 h in a saline environment at 140 °C. In the water flooding characterization, the STP displayed a breakthrough pressure of 42.10 psi/ft. at a flow rate of 0.75 cm3/min. Under these extreme conditions, the plugging pressure reached 14.74 psi/ft., meeting the essential criteria for oilfield water plugging. This research demonstrates the potential of polysaccharides in the preparation of sustainable, tough, and heat-resistant water plugging materials.

Dual-Ligand Ruthenium Coordination Polymer-Derived Self-Enhanced Electrochemiluminescent Emitters for Sensitive Detection of Procalcitonin

Ru-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) coordination polymers are widely employed for bioanalysis and medical diagnosis. However, commonly used Ru-based coordination polymers face the limitation of low efficiency due to the long distance between the ECL reagent and the coreactant dispersed in detecting solution. Herein, we report a dual-ligand self-enhanced ECL coordination polymer, composed of tris(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) dichloride (Ru(dcbpy)32+) as ECL reactant ligand and ethylenediamine (EDA) as corresponding coreactant ligand into Zn2+ metal node, termed Zn-Ru-EDA. Zn-Ru-EDA shows excellent ECL performance which is attributed to the effective intramolecular electron transport between the two ligands. Furthermore, the dual-ligand polymer allows an anodic low excitation potential (+1.09 V) luminescence. The shift in the energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) upward after the synthesis of the Zn-Ru-EDA has resulted in a reduced excitation potential. The low excitation potential reduced biomolecular damage and the destruction of the modified electrodes. The ECL biosensor has been constructed using Zn-Ru-EDA with high ECL efficiency for the ultrasensitive detection of a bacterial infection and sepsis biomarker, procalcitonin (PCT), in the range from 1.00 × 10-6 to 1.00 × 10 ng·mL-1 with outstanding selectivity, and the detection limit was as low as 0.47 fg·mL-1. Collectively, the dual-ligand-based self-enhanced polymer may provide an ideal strategy for high ECL efficiency improvement as well as designing new self-enhanced multiple-ligand-based coordination in sensitive biomolecular detection for early disease diagnostics.

A thermo-responsive hydrogel for body temperature-induced spontaneous information decryption and self-encryption

A thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel, exhibiting an interesting phenomenon of an opaque-transparent-opaque transition in the successive processes of heating and cooling, is reported. It is fabricated by means of both the porogenic effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose and the cononsolvency effect of PNIPAM in a mixed solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide and water. After being mildly triggered by body temperature, the hydrogel is used to spontaneously decrypt the quick response code within 4 min and then autonomously encrypts the code again within 10 min at room temperature. The mechanism for the transient transparency of hydrogels during the quenching process has been elucidated.

Nanocellulose-based cobalt(II) coordinated malonic acid hybrid aerogels exhibiting reversible thermochromism and moisture sensor properties

The emergence of sustainable polymers and technologies has led to the development of innovative materials with minimal carbon emissions which find extensive applications in wearable electronics, biomedical sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems. Nanocellulose which can be generated from abundant biomass materials has been widely recognized as a sustainable alternative for a diverse range of applications due to its remarkable properties and eco-friendly nature. By making use of the unique and easily accessible coordination transformation property of Co(II) ions and associated visible light absorption changes, we report a novel Co(II) cation-incorporated nanocellulose/malonic acid hybrid aerogel material that exhibits reversible thermochromism induced by thermal stimulus in the presence of atmospheric moisture. This effect is accentuated by the highly porous nature of the nanocellulose aerogel material we have developed. Besides the reversible thermochromic property which Co(II) ions exhibit, the metal ions act as very efficient reinforcing units contributing significantly to the structural stability and rigidity of the hierarchical aerogels by coordinative cross-linking through carboxylate moieties present in the TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) and additionally adding malonic acid to provide sufficient COO- for cross-linking. Thorough characterization and detailed investigation of as-prepared hybrid aerogels was conducted to evaluate their overall properties including reversible thermochromism and moisture sensor behaviour. Further, an Android mobile-based application was developed to demonstrate the real-world application of the aerogels for atmospheric humidity sensing.

Finely manipulating room temperature phosphorescence by dynamic lanthanide coordination toward multi-level information security

Room temperature phosphorescence materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique optical properties and promising applications. However, it remains a great challenge to finely manipulate phosphorescent properties to achieve desirable phosphorescent performance on demand. Here, we show a feasible strategy to finely manipulate organic phosphorescent performance by introducing dynamic lanthanide coordination. The organic phosphors of terpyridine phenylboronic acids possessing excellent coordination ability are covalently embedded into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, leading to ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence with a lifetime of up to 0.629 s. Notably, such phosphorescent performance, including intensity and lifetime, can be well controlled by varying the lanthanide dopant. Relying on the excellent modulable performance of these lanthanide-manipulated phosphorescence films, multi-level information encryption including attacker-misleading and spatial-time-resolved applications is successfully demonstrated with greatly improved security level. This work opens an avenue for finely manipulating phosphorescent properties to meet versatile uses in optical applications.

Development research of latent fingermarks based on aggregation-induced emission technique

Fingerprints hold evidential value for individual identification; a sensitive, efficient, and convenient method for visualizing latent fingermarks (LFMs) is of great importance in the field of crime scene investigation. In this study, we proposed an aggregation-induced emission atomization technique (AIE-AT) to obtain high-quality fingermark images. Six volunteers made over 1566 fingerprint samples on 17 different objects. The quality of fingermark development was evaluated using grayscale analysis for quantitative assessment, combining the fluency of fingermark ridges and the degree of level 2 and level 3 features. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to explore the effectiveness of AIE molecule C27H19N3SO in developing fingermarks, its applicability to objects, and its individual selectivity. Additionally, the stability of the AIE molecule was examined. Comparative experimental results demonstrated the high stability of the AIE molecule, making it suitable for long-term preservation. The grayscale ratio of the ridges and furrows was at least 2, with high brightness contrast, the level 2 and level 3 features were clearly observable. The AIE-AT proved to be effective for developing fingermarks on nonporous, porous, and semiporous objects. It exhibited low selectivity on suspects who leave fingermarks and showed better development effects on challenging objects, as well as efficient extraction capability for in situ fingermarks. In summary, AIE-AT can efficiently develop latent fingermarks on common objects and even challenging ones. It locates the latent fingermarks for further accurate extraction of touch exfoliated cells in situ, providing technical support for the visualization of fingermarks and the localization for extraction of touch DNA.

Spatially and Temporally Programmable Transparency Evolutions in Hydrogels Enabled by Metal Coordination toward Transient Anticounterfeiting

Hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for anticounterfeiting materials, owing to their unique stimulus-responsive capabilities. To improve the security of encrypted information, efforts are devoted to constructing transient anticounterfeiting hydrogels with a dynamic information display. However, current studies to design such hydrogel materials inevitably include sophisticated chemistry, complex preparation processes, and particular experimental setups. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to realize the transient anticounterfeiting by constructing bivalent metal (M2+)-coordination complexes in poly(acrylic acid) gels, where the cloud temperature (Tc) of the gels can be feasibly tuned by M2+ concentration. Therefore, the multi-Tc parts in the gel can be locally programmed by leveraging the spatially selective diffusion of M2+ with different concentrations. With the increase of temperature or the addition of a complexing agent, the transparency of the multi-Tc parts in the gel spontaneously evolves in natural light, enabling the transient information anticounterfeiting process. This work has provided a new strategy and mechanism to fabricate advanced anticounterfeiting hydrogel materials.

A solvent-controlled photoresponsive ionic hydrogen-bonded organic framework for encryption applications

Two novel ionic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (iHOF-17 and iHOF-18) were obtained by integrating organosulfonic acids with amidine salts. Among them, iHOF-18 exhibits fast, reversible, and high-contrast UV-induced photochromic properties, and this property is solvent-controlled. This work provides valuable insights for designing advanced anti-counterfeiting techniques and encryption applications.

A temperature and pressure dual-responsive, stretchable, healable, adhesive, and biocompatible carboxymethyl cellulose-based conductive hydrogels for flexible wearable strain sensor

The study aimed to develop a novel temperature and pressure dual-responsive conductive hydrogel with self-healing, self-adhesive, biocompatible, and stretchable properties, for the development of multifunctional anti-counterfeiting and wearable flexible electronic materials. A conductive hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was synthesized by simple "one pot" free radical polymerization of CMC, acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc). The hydrogel displayed temperature responsiveness and possessed an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) value. In addition, hydrogels also had surprising pressure responsiveness. The synthesized hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, TGA, DSC, and XRD analysis. Importantly, the obtained hydrogels exhibited exceptional mechanical properties (stress: 730 kPa, strain: 880%), fatigue resistance, stretchability, self-healing capability, self-adhesive properties, and conductivity. In addition, valuable insights were obtained into the synthesis and application of flexible anti-counterfeiting and camouflage materials by the temperature and pressure dual-responsive hydrogels. Moreover, the prepared hydrogel, with an electrically sensitive perception of external strain (GF = 2.61, response time: 80 ms), can be utilized for monitoring human movement, emotional changes, physiological signals, language, and more, rendering it suitable for novel flexible anti-counterfeiting materials and versatile wearable iontronics. Overall, this study provided novel insights into the simple and efficient synthesis and sustainable manufacturing of environmentally friendly multifunctional anti-counterfeiting materials and flexible electronic skin sensors.

Carboxymethylcellulose hydrogels with stable carbon quantum dots: Enabling dynamic fluorescence modulation, automatic erasure, and secure information encryption

Inspired by "disappear after reading", a time-modulated encryption hydrogel was synthesized by carboxymethyl cellulose with carbon quantum dots. Carboxymethyl cellulose in this system stabilized carbon quantum dots, which ensured the whole hydrogel worked well. The encryption/decryption of information depended on pH adjustment, application of EDTA and Cr (VI). Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the fluorescence change mechanism uncovered that fluorescence quenching was potentially influenced by internal filtering effects and static quenching, which involved the amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups present within the hydrogel.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Plant-inspired multifunctional fluorescent cellulose nanocrystals intelligent nanocomposite hydrogel

Intelligent hydrogel has great application potentials in flexible sensing and artificial intelligence devices due to its intrinsic characteristics. However, developing an intelligent hydrogel with favorable properties including high strength, superior toughness, excellent conductivity and ionic sensing via a facile route is still a challenge. Herein, inspired by biologically chelating interactions of phytic acid (PA) in plants, a plant-inspired versatile intelligent nanocomposite hydrogel was readily fabricated by incorporating PA into the interface of fluorescent cellulose nanocrystals (F-CNC). Under PA "molecular bridge", the hydrogel simultaneously realized superflexibility (1000 %), high strength, superb self-healing ability, remarkable fluorescence and chloride ion sensibility as well as good ionic conductivity (2.4 S/m). The hydrogel could be assembled as a flexible sensor for real-time monitoring of human motion with excellent sensitivity and stability since high sensitivity toward both strain and pressure. F-CNC acted as a functional trigger could confer the hydrogel good fluorescence and high sensitivity toward chloride ion. This design confirms the synergy of F-CNC in boosting strength, ionic sensing, and ionic conductivity, addressing a long-standing dilemma among strength, stretchability, and sensitivity for intelligent hydrogel. The one-step incorporating tactic under mild ambient conditions may open an innovative avenue for the construction of intelligent hydrogel with novel properties.

Shape memory luminescent cellulose/chitosan hydrogel for high sensitive detection of formaldehyde

Hybrid hydrogels containing biomacromolecules have been widely used in sensors, fluorescent probes, and other fields due to their high biocompatibility and nontoxicity. In this paper, tough hydrogels with interconnected macro-pores have been fabricated by freeze-induced chemical cross-linking of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and organic modified chitosan (CS). In this hydrogel materials, three-dimensional networks were formed by abundant hydrogen bonds and chemical cross-linking. Luminescent lanthanide complexes were covalently bonded to the hydrogel networks through coordination of Eu³⁺ ions with 2, 3-pyridine dicarboxylic acid modified chitosan. The luminescence of hydrogel materials was further improved by the replacement of coordination water with 2-thiophenyltrifluoroacetone (TTA). The prepared hydrogels showed excellent shape memory properties both under water and in air. The stress of the hybrid hydrogel at 80 % strain can reach 159 kPa, which is much higher than that of the traditional microfibrillated cellulose-based hydrogels. The obtained luminescent hybrid hydrogels exhibited an excellent fluorescence detection effect on formaldehyde. The detection limit for formaldehyde is 45.7 ppb, which is much lower than the WHO standard (80 ppb for indoor air). The novel, facile preparing procedure may extend the potential applications of hybrid lanthanide luminescent hydrogel as fluorescence probes for pollution monitoring, especially for formaldehyde and other organic aldehydes.

Understanding Nanocellulose-Water Interactions: Turning a Detriment into an Asset

Modern technology has enabled the isolation of nanocellulose from plant-based fibers, and the current trend focuses on utilizing nanocellulose in a broad range of sustainable materials applications. Water is generally seen as a detrimental component when in contact with nanocellulose-based materials, just like it is harmful for traditional cellulosic materials such as paper or cardboard. However, water is an integral component in plants, and many applications of nanocellulose already accept the presence of water or make use of it. This review gives a comprehensive account of nanocellulose-water interactions and their repercussions in all key areas of contemporary research: fundamental physical chemistry, chemical modification of nanocellulose, materials applications, and analytical methods to map the water interactions and the effect of water on a nanocellulose matrix.

Multi-Level Information Encryption/Decryption of Fluorescent Hydrogels Based on Spatially Programmed Crystal Phases

The growing urgence of information protection promotes continuously the development of information-encryption technique. To date, hydrogels have become an emerging candidate for advanced information-encryption materials, because of their unique stimulus responsiveness. However, current methods to design multi-level information-encrypted hydrogels usually need sophisticated chemistry or experimental setup. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to fabricate hydrogels with multi-level information encryption/decryption functions through spatially programming the polymorphic crystal phases. As homocrystalline and stereocomplex crystal phases in fluorescent hydrogels have different solvent stabilities, the transparency and fluorescence of the hydrogels can be regulated, thereby enabling the multi-level encryption/decryption processes. Moreover, the structural origins behind these processes are discussed. It is believe that this work will inspire future research on developing advanced information-encryption materials upon programming the polymer crystal structure.

Recent Progress in Smart Polymeric Gel-Based Information Storage for Anti-Counterfeiting

Information security protection has a tremendous impact on human life, social stability and national security, leading to the rapid development of anti-counterfeiting materials and related techniques. However, the traditional stored information on hard or dry media is often static and lacks functions, which makes it challenging to deal with increasing and powerful counterfeiting technologies. Modified intelligent polymeric gels exhibit color changes and shape morphing under external stimuli, which give them great potential for applications in information storage. This paper provides an overview of the latest progress in polymeric gel-based information storage materials in relation to counterfeiting. Following a brief introduction of anti-counterfeiting materials, the preparation methods for intelligent gels with adjustable colors (e.g., chemical colors and physical colors) and various encryption/decryption modes involving dimensions and diverse colors are outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects for information storage and anti-counterfeiting based on smart gels are discussed.

Instantaneous High-Resolution Visual Imaging of Latent Fingerprints in Water Using Color-Tunable AIE Pincer Complexes

Instant visualization of latent fingerprints is developed by using a series of water-soluble terpyridine zinc complexes as aggregation-induced emission probes in pure water, under UV light or ambient sunlight. By simply soaking, or spraying with an aqueous solution of the probe, bright yellow fluorescence images with high contrast and resolution are readily developed on various surfaces including tinfoil, glass, paper, steel, leather, and ceramic tile. Remarkably, latent fingerprints can be visualized within seconds including details of whorl and sweat pores. The color of emission can be tuned from blue to orange by modifying the pincer ligands, allowing direct imaging under sunlight. These inexpensive, water-resistant, and color-tunable probes provide a practical approach for latent fingerprints recording and analysis, security protection, as well as criminal investigation in different scenarios.

Cellulose-based functional hydrogels derived from bamboo for product design

Hydrogels have outstanding research and application prospects in the field of product design. Among them, the design and preparation of cellulose-based functional hydrogels derived from bamboo have attracted increasing research interest. Cellulose-based hydrogels not only have the skeleton function of hydrogels, but also retain excellent specificity, smart structural design, precise molecular recognition ability, and superior biocompatibility. Cellulose-based hydrogels show important application prospects in various fields, such as environmental protection, biomedicine, and energy. What's more, they are potentially viable for application in food packaging and plant agriculture, such as fertilizers release and crop production. Recently, researchers have extracted cellulose from bamboo and generated a variety of cellulose-based functional hydrogels with excellent properties by various cross-linking methods. In addition, a variety of multifunctional hybrid cellulose-based hydrogels have been constructed by introducing functional components or combining them with other functional materials, thus expanding the breadth and depth of their applications. Herein, we elaborate on advances in the field of cellulose-based hydrogels and highlight their applications in food packaging and plant agriculture. Meanwhile, the existing problems and prospects are summarized. The review provides a reference for the further development of cellulose-based hydrogels.

Light-activated photodeformable supramolecular dissipative self-assemblies

Dissipative self-assembly, one of fundamentally important out-of-equilibrium self-assembly systems, can serve as a controllable platform to exhibit temporal processes for various non-stimulus responsive properties. However, construction of light-fueled dissipative self-assembly structures with transformable morphology to modulate non-photoresponsive properties remains a great challenge. Here, we report a light-activated photodeformable dissipative self-assembly system in aqueous solution as metastable fluorescent palette. Zwitterionic sulfonato-merocyanine is employed as a light-induced amphiphile to co-assemble with polyethyleneimine after light irradiation. The formed spherical nanoparticles spontaneously transform into cuboid ones in the dark with simultaneous variation of the particle sizes. Then the two kinds of nanoparticles can reversibly interconvert to each other by periodical light irradiation and thermal relaxation. Furthermore, after loading different fluorophores exhibiting red, green, blue emissions and their mixtures, all these fluorescent dissipative deformable nanoparticles display time-dependent fluorescence variation with wide range of colors. Owing to the excellent performance of photodeformable dissipative assembly platform, the light-controlled fluorescence has achieved a 358-fold enhancement. Therefore, exposing the nanoparticles loaded with fluorophores to light in a spatially controlled manner allows us to draw multicolored fluorescent images that spontaneously disappeared after a specific period of time.

Dissipative self-assembly can serve as a controllable platform to exhibit temporal processes for various non-stimulus responsive properties but construction of light-fueled dissipative self-assembly structures with transformable morphology to modulate non-photoresponsive properties remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a light-activated photodeformable dissipative self-assembly system in aqueous solution as metastable fluorescent platform.

Chemical-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Imaging of Fingerprints

Fingerprints are extremely useful in personal identification; however, they are usually based on physical rather than chemical images because it remains a challenge to reveal a clear chemical fingerprint easily and sensitively. Herein, a surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) method, combined with a chemically selective stepwise signal amplification (CS³A) strategy, is proposed to chemically image fingerprints with adjustable sensitivity and clarity. High-fidelity glucose-associated fingerprint images were obtained at five to seven cycles of CS³A based on the recognition reaction of concanavalin A (ConA) with dextran. The method is also extendable to image substances that possess and/or can be tagged with ConA- or dextran-recognizable groups. For demonstration, SPRi of carboxylic substances was conducted by amidating the carboxyl group with glucosamine to enable the ConA-based CS³A. Glucose- and carboxyl-based fingerprints were simultaneously and clearly imaged, allowing us to perform quantitative analysis of the representative of either glucose or amino acid (e.g., serine) or both. The curves measured from the standard spots were linear in the ranges of 1-4000 μM for glucose and 3.2-4000 μM for serine, with linear correlated coefficients of 0.9979 and 0.9962, respectively. It was then applied to the study of metabolic secretions in fingerprints during running exercise, yielding variation tendencies similar to those measured from sweat samples in the literature. As a noninvasive tool, the CS³A-coupled SPRi reveals both clear images of fingerprints and quantitative chemical information, and it is anticipated to become a competitive new method for chemically imaging fingerprints.

Carbazole-Functionalized Dipicolinato LnIII Complexes Show Two-Photon Excitation and Viscosity-Sensitive Metal-Centered Emission

Eu^III and Yb^III complexes with the carbazole-dipicolinato ligand dpaCbz^2-, namely K₃[Eu(dpaCbz)₃] and K₃[Yb(dpaCbz)₃], were isolated. The Eu^III complex displayed metal-centred emission upon one-photon excitation with a sensitized emission efficiency Φ L Ln of 1.8±0.3 %, corresponding to an intrinsic emission efficiency Φ Ln Ln of 46% and a sensitization efficiency of η_sens 3.9%, with an emission lifetime of the emissive state τ of 1.087±0.005 ms. The Yb^III complex displayed Φ L Ln of 0.010±0.001 %, and a τ of 2.32±0.06 μs. The Eu^III-centred emission was sensitized as well upon two-photon excitation and a two-photon absorption cross-section σ_2PA of 63 GM at 750 nm was determined for the complex. The one- or two-photon sensitized emission intensity of the Eu^III complex changes by more than two-fold when the solvent viscosity is varied in the range 0.5 - 200 cP and the emission is independent of dissolved oxygen. The Yb^III complex displays a change in emission intensity as well. However, in this case, a dependence of the emission intensity on dissolved oxygen content was observed.

Ratiometric fluorescence chemodosimeter for hydrazine in aqueous solution and gas phase based on Quinoline-Malononitrile

The widespread use of Hydrazine (N₂H₄) in many areas of the chemical industry, brings potential risks to human health and environmental pollution. To detect N₂H₄ effectively, a simple ratio fluorescence probe (QMM), designed and synthesized through Vilsmeier reaction and Knoevenagel reaction, was prepared for the specific response of N₂H₄ based on the irreversible chemical reaction. The ratiometric fluorescence chemodosimeter displayed a response for hydrazine with high selectivity, sensitivity and anti-interference ability. The measured detection limit is 38.30 nm (0.122 ppb), which is far lower than the maximum allowable level of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (10 ppb). Moreover, test paper and TLC plates loading QMM had been made, which could be utilized to detect hydrazine both in aqueous solution samples and in gas phase samples. Thus QMM could serve as an easily manufactured, low-cost, efficient and portable solid-state optical probe to detect hydrazine in field measurements.

One-Pot Green Preparation of Fluorescent Cellulose Nanofibers

Fluorescent cellulose nanofibers (FCNFs), with a high yield, were prepared via one-pot hydrolysis and the grafting reaction of cellulose with thiazolipyridine carboxylic acid (TPCA). The hydrolysis and Fischer esterification of cellulose were conducted under microwave-hydrothermal conditions; meanwhile, TPCA formation was induced by the dehydration reaction between L-cysteine and citric acid. The effects of the reaction temperature and reaction time on the yield and performance of FCNF were investigated. The morphology and size, surface chemical property, crystal structure, thermostability, and fluorescent performance of FCNF were characterized. The results revealed that the yield of FCNF reached 73.2% under a microwave power of 500 W, reaction temperature of 110 °C, and reaction time of 5 h. The FCNF obtained presents a short rod-like morphology. The crystallinity of the FCNFs is 80%, and their thermal stability did not decline significantly. Additionally, the fluorescent performance of the FCNFs is excellent, which results in them having good sensitivity to chloride ions. The good fluorescent performance and significant responsiveness to chloride ions of FCNFs lead to them having broad prospects in bio-labeling, biosensing, information storage, chloride ion detection, among others.

Swelling-Induced Information Camouflage and Optical Decryption on a Transparent Recoverable Hydrogel Surface

Information camouflage and decryption on hydrogels rely on chemical stimuli such as pH, ultraviolet light, and chemical reactions, in which the cyclability is limited. This work develops a simpler yet effective physical method that can achieve the information camouflage on hydrogels by water swelling and decrypt it under white light. The information camouflage and decryption can proceed with unlimited cycles. To successfully reach the information camouflage, the hydrogel is synthesized with the water swelling ratio in weight as high as 250, which is enabled by the strong electrostatic repulsion of cationic moieties inside the network. At such a high water-swollen state, the hydrogel is still robust and elastic, which provides a mechanical basis to maintain the stability of the camouflaged information. We write information on the hydrogel surface by laser cutting. Upon immersing the hydrogel in water, the high swelling results in huge expansion of the hydrogel, thus inducing the information camouflage. With exposure to white light, the information can be decrypted and becomes visible again. Our protocol utilizes a simple physical process to enable the camouflage and decryption of complex information, which might open an alternative pathway for the development of hydrogel materials in the application of informatics.

Research progress of smart response composite hydrogels based on nanocellulose

In recent years, smart-responsive nanocellulose composite hydrogels have attracted extensive attention due to their unique porous substrate, hydrophilic properties, biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness. At present, the research on smart response nanocellulose composite hydrogel mainly focuses on the selection of composite materials and the construction of internal chemical bonds. The common composite materials and connection methods used for preparation of smart response nanocellulose composite hydrogels are compared according to the different types of response sources such as temperature, pH and so on. The response mechanisms and the application prospects of different response types of nanocellulose composite hydrogels are summarized, and the transformation of internal ions, functional groups and chemical bonds, as well as the changes in mechanical properties such as modulus and strength are discussed. Finally, the shortcomings and application prospects of nanocellulose smart response composite hydrogels are summarized and prospected.

Dual-emission 3D supramolecular framework hydrogel beads: highly selective detection of antibiotics and mechanism research

Ratiometric fluorescent probes based on coordination polymers (CPs) have been widely applied in optical applications. Therefore, it is very important to develop a dual-emitting gel material based on coordination polymers for specific recognition of molecules. Cu-atda (H₂atda = 3,3'-(4-amino-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diyl) dibenzoic acid) is synthesized with a porous structure and a large number of amino sites exposed on the surface, which can be regarded as a carrier for fluorescent molecules and well disperse in the SA hydrogel network. A dual-emission Eu³⁺ functionalized CP hydrogel bead (9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA, 9A = 9-anthraldehyde and SA = sodium alginate) is successfully prepared, which presents ratiometric fluorescence detection of flumequine with a low detection limit (48 nM) and high selectivity. Furthermore, it also displays an excellent fluorescence quenching effect on nitrofuran antibiotics, exhibiting a dual functional performance. In addition, the fluorescence response mechanisms of flumequine and nitrofuran antibiotics are discussed in depth. As a portable material, visualization 9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA beads provide an extensive and convenient application prospect for real-time monitoring of antibiotics in the water environment.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Luminescent Hydrogel Glued by a Cationic Polymeric Binder

Luminescent hydrogels have shown great potential in many fields, such as lighting, display, imaging, and sensing, because of their unique optical properties, biocompatibility, and easy processing. Organic-inorganic hybrid self-assembly can not only enhance the hydrogels' mechanical strength, but also retain their self-healing ability. Herein, a luminescent supramolecular hydrogel is reported, which is formed via self-assembly of the negatively charged Laponite nanosheets and cationic lanthanide coordination polymer. The corresponding results reveal that the multiple binding interaction between Laponite and the polymeric binder is vital for improving the mechanical performance of the obtained luminescent supramolecular hydrogel.

NIR emissive light-harvesting systems through perovskite passivation and sequential energy transfer for third-level fingerprint imaging

A near-infrared (NIR) emissive artificial light-harvesting system with two-step high-efficiency sequential resonance energy transfers was fabricated based on the in situ growth of MAPbBr₃ quantum dots in the supramolecular self-assembly of a Zn(II) carboxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene coordination polymer and two different fluorescent dyes, eosin Y and Nile blue. This system could realize NIR fluorescent imaging of the sweat pores of latent fingerprints, opening a new avenue to design perovskite-based NIR emitting artificial light-harvesting systems for third-level fingerprint imaging.

Recent studies on cellulose-based fluorescent smart materials and their applications: A comprehensive review

The progress of bio-based fluorescent smart materials and their multifunctional applications have attained increasing interest in the recent decades. Cellulose is among the cheapest and widespread raw material on earth which can be modified into diverse useful materials. This review summarizes the chemical modification of cellulose into smart fluorescent materials. This further highlights on the fabrication of the prepared fluorescent materials into films, fibers, paper strips, carbon dots, hydrogels and solutions which are applied for the sensing of toxic metals and anions, pH, bioimaging, common organic solvents, aliphatic and aromatic amines, nitroaromatics, fluorescent printing, coating, and anti-counterfeiting applications. Finally, the discussion about the upcoming investigations, challenges, and options open for the cellulose-based luminescence sensors are communicated. We believe that this review will appeal more and more attention and curiosity for the chemists, biochemists, and chemical engineers working with the synthesis of cellulose-based fluorescent materials for widespread applications.

Metal Cation-Responsive and Excitation-Dependent Nontraditional Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogels for Multidimensional Information Encryption

Fluorescent polymeric hydrogels especially multicolor fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (MFPHs) have important applications in information storage, encryption, and encoding. MFPHs are generally prepared by incorporating multiple traditional fluorescent materials into hydrogels. In recent years, nontraditional luminescent polymers without any traditional π-conjugated chromophores have received increasing attention. Here, we report a novel type of nontraditional MFPHs prepared by in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) in the presence of poly(itaconic acid) (PITAc). The hydrogen-bonded mechanically strong PAAm/PITAc hydrogels show strong intrinsic fluorescence, and the fluorescence emission is excitation-dependent and metal cation-responsive. More impressively, the hydrogels treated with metal cations also possess excitation-dependent fluorescence. We developed a multi-ion inkjet printing (MIIP) technique to print texts or designed patterns onto the hydrogel surface using different metal cation solutions as inks, and then variable texts or patterns appear under the irradiation of UV, violet, and blue lights. Patterns can be further changed by selective printing, erasing, or reprinting on some regions. Therefore, multidimensional information encryption is achieved. This work provides a new strategy for preparing MFPHs for wide applications.

Highly Stable Perovskite Quantum Dots Modified by Europium Complex for Dual-Responsive Optical Encoding

Inorganic perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted great scientific attention in the field of luminescent materials, but the application has been limited by the inferior stability that results from highly dynamic capping ligands. In this work, we use a rare-earth complex to modify perovskite QDs with ligand exchange to realize perovskite functionalization; meanwhile, the stability of perovskite QDs is greatly improved. Density functional theory calculation results show that the adsorption energy of the europium complex to QDs is higher than that with traditional ligands, which provides a thermodynamic basis for stability improvement. Furthermore, the modified QDs exhibit attractive dual-response property, including temperature and pH response ascribed to QDs and europium complexes, respectively. The superior property can be applied to multi-stimuli-responsive optical encoding, which is further capable of enhancing the security of encrypted information. This study not only affords a strategy for the synthesis of highly stable perovskites but also provides a method for the functionalization of perovskites.

New up-conversion luminescence in molecular cyano-substituted naphthylsalophen lanthanide(iii) complexes

A new naphthylsalophen and its 3 : 2 ligand-to-lanthanide sandwich-type complexes were isolated. When excited at 380 nm, the complexes display the characteristic metal-centred emission for Nd^III, Er^III and Yb^III. Upon 980 nm excitation, in mixed lanthanide and the Er complexes, Er-centred upconversion emission at 543 and 656 nm is observed, with power densities as low as 2.18 W cm^-2.

Photoresponsive supramolecular coordination polyelectrolyte as smart anticounterfeiting inks

While photoluminescence printing is a widely applied anticounterfeiting technique, there are still challenges in developing new generation anticounterfeiting materials with high security. Here we report the construction of a photoresponsive supramolecular coordination polyelectrolyte (SCP) through hierarchical self-assembly of lanthanide ion, bis-ligand and diarylethene unit, driven by metal-ligand coordination and ionic interaction. Owing to the conformation-dependent photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the lanthanide donor and diarylethene acceptor, the ring-closure/ring-opening isomerization of the diarylethene unit leads to a photoreversible luminescence on/off switch in the SCP. The SCP is then utilized as security ink to print various patterns, through which photoreversible multiple information patterns with visible/invisible transformations are realized by simply alternating the irradiation with UV and visible light. This work demonstrates the possibility of developing a new class of smart anticounterfeiting materials, which could be operated in a noninvasive manner with a higher level of security.

Lighting up solid states using a rubber

It is crucial and desirable to develop green and high-efficient strategies to regulate solid-state structures and their related material properties. However, relative to solution, it is more difficult to break and generate chemical bonds in solid states. In this work, a rubbing-induced photoluminescence on the solid states of ortho-pyridinil phenol family was achieved. This rubbing response relied on an accurately designed topochemical tautomerism, where a negative charge, exactly provided by the triboelectric effect of a rubber, can induce a proton transfer in a double H-bonded dimeric structure. This process instantaneously led to a bright-form tautomer that can be stabilized in the solid-state settings, leading to an up to over 450-fold increase of the fluorescent quantum yield of the materials. The property can be repeatedly used due to the reversibility of the tautomerism, enabling encrypted applications. Moreover, a further modification to the structure can be accomplished to achieve different properties, opening up more possibilities for the design of new-generation smart materials.

Changes in molecular properties due to stimuli response are critically important for the development of new materials. However, most processes are slow or inefficient in the solid state. Here the authors demonstrate property switching in the solid state using a rubbing-induced tautomerism in multiple hydrogen-bonded donor-acceptor couples.

Blue luminescent N,S-doped carbon dots encapsulated in red emissive Eu-MOF to form dually emissive composite for reversible anti-counterfeit ink

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have demonstrated great potential in luminescence sensing and optical anti-counterfeiting. High-security anti-counterfeiting technology is of great importance and requires the development of universal luminescent materials with multiple modes of emission and adjustable photoluminescence. Herein, a 3D red light emission microporous europium(iii) metal-organic framework [Eu₃(OH)(1,3-db)₂(H₂O)₄]·3H₂O (1) (1,3-db = 1,3-di(3',5'-dicarboxylpheny) benzene) was constructed from a zigzag [Eu₃(COO)₈] chain and π-electron-rich terphenyl-tetracarboxylate. Notably, the quenched fluorescence of 1 under hydrogen chloride vapor could be recovered upon fuming by a vapor of Et₃N. Most strikingly, the strong blue light emission by nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) could be encapsulated in 1 to generate a dual-emission composite, namely, N,S-CDs@Eu-MOF, which shows solvent-dependent photoluminescence: N,S-CD-related blue luminescence in water and Eu-MOF-related red emission in organic solvents. Taking advantage of the above unique reversible fluorescent behavior, Eu-MOF and N,S-CDs@Eu-MOF are prepared as fluorescent high-security inks to achieve data encryption and decryption on specific flower patterns.

Nanocellulose: Recent Fundamental Advances and Emerging Biological and Biomimicking Applications

In the effort toward sustainable advanced functional materials, nanocelluloses have attracted extensive recent attention. Nanocelluloses range from rod-like highly crystalline cellulose nanocrystals to longer and more entangled cellulose nanofibers, earlier denoted also as microfibrillated celluloses and bacterial cellulose. In recent years, they have spurred research toward a wide range of applications, ranging from nanocomposites, viscosity modifiers, films, barrier layers, fibers, structural color, gels, aerogels and foams, and energy applications, until filtering membranes, to name a few. Still, nanocelluloses continue to show surprisingly high challenges to master their interactions and tailorability to allow well-controlled assemblies for functional materials. Rather than trying to review the already extensive nanocellulose literature at large, here selected aspects of the recent progress are the focus. Water interactions, which are central for processing for the functional properties, are discussed first. Then advanced hybrid gels toward (multi)stimuli responses, shape-memory materials, self-healing, adhesion and gluing, biological scaffolding, and forensic applications are discussed. Finally, composite fibers are discussed, as well as nanocellulose as a strategy for improvement of photosynthesis-based chemicals production. In summary, selected perspectives toward new directions for sustainable high-tech functional materials science based on nanocelluloses are described.

In Situ Interactions of Eu(TTA)3(H2O)2 with Latent Fingermark Components-A Time-Gated Visualization of Latent Fingermarks on Paper

We introduce a new latent fingermark (LFM) development method, where compounds showing long lifetime luminescence are generated in situ by the reactions of Eu(TTA)₃(H₂O)₂ with LFM components. Until now, time-gated imaging could not be used to develop LFM on porous surfaces due to the difficulties with selective binding of the developing agents to the fingermark ridges. The nature of the interactions of Eu(TTA)₃(H₂O)₂ with the LFM material has been investigated for three model compounds commonly found in the LFM composition-oleic acid, l-serine, and squalene. The LFMs developed with the europium β-diketonate complex have been successfully photographed using a time-gated imaging scheme. The presented new approach has been demonstrated to give similar or better results than developing agents commonly used for paper samples (ninhydrin and 1,2-indanedione). Moreover, contrary to the methods mentioned above, the new approach allows for the development of amino acid-poor LFM on paper.

Stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels: Design and applications

Luminescent hydrogels are emerging soft materials with applications in photoelectric, biomedicine, sensors and actuators, which are fabricated via covalently conjugation of luminophors to hydrogelators or physical loading of luminescent organic/inorganic materials into hydrogel matrices. Due to the intrinsic stimulus-responsiveness for hydrogels such as thermo-, pH, ionic strength, light and redox, luminescent hydrogels could respond to external physical or chemical stimuli through varying the luminescent properties such as colors, fluorescent intensity and so on, affording diverse application potential in addition to the pristine individual hydrogels or luminescent materials. Based on the rapid development of such area, here we systematically summarize and discuss the design protocols, properties as well as the applications of stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels. Because of the stimuli-responsiveness, biocompatibility, injectable and controllability of luminescent hydrogels, they are widely used as functional smart materials. We illustrate the applications of luminescent hydrogels. The future developments about luminescent hydrogels are also presented.

Applications of Cellulose Nanomaterials in Stimuli-Responsive Optics

As one of the most abundant biopolymers, cellulose has been a basic but essential building block of human society, with its use dating back thousands of years. With recent developments in nanotechnology and increasing environmental concerns, cellulose-based nanomaterials are now gaining attention as promising green material candidates for many high-value applications as a result of their biocompatibility and advantageous physical and chemical properties. In particular, cellulose nanocrystals are notable for their optical properties that can respond to various environmental stimuli as a result of the unique chiral nematic structure of the material. Compositing cellulosic materials with functional polymers, small molecules, and other nanomaterials can further stabilize and amplify these responsive optical signals and introduce multiple new functionalities. On the basis of these capabilities, many advanced applications of cellulose nanomaterials have been proposed, including chemical sensors, photonic papers, decorative coatings, data security, and smart textiles. In this review, we discuss and summarize recent advances in this emerging field of stimuli-responsive optics based on cellulose nanomaterials.
