Abstract
We report an unprecedented iron-catalyzed C-H annulation using readily available 2-vinylbenzofurans as the reaction pattern. The redox-neutral strategy, based on cheap, non-toxic, and earth-abundant iron catalysts, exploits triazole assistance to promote a cascade C-H alkylation, benzofuran ring-opening and insertion into a Fe-N bond, to form highly functionalized isoquinolones. Detailed mechanistic studies supported by DFT calculations fully disclosed the manifold of the iron catalysis.

Abstract
Although the 3 d transition-metal catalyzed C-H functionalization have been extensively employed to promote the formation of valuable carbon-carbon bonds, the persistent problems, including the use of sensitive Grignard reagents and the rigorous operations (solvent-drying, inert gas protection, metal pre-activation and RMgX addition rate control), still leave great room for further development of sustainable methodologies. Herein, we report a mechanochemical technology toward in-situ preparation of highly sensitive organomagnesium reagents, and thus building two general 3 d transition-metal catalytic platforms that enables regioselective arylation and alkylation of indoles with a wide variety of halides (including those containing post transformable functionalities and heteroaromatic rings). This mechanochemical strategy also brings unique reactivity and high step-economy in producing functionalized N-free indole products.

Abstract
The development of an electrochemical cobalt catalyzed C-Cl bond activation at room temperature for the nucleophilic addition of aryl and vinyl chlorides to α-ketoamides is described. The overall method operates through an electrochemically induced low valent cobalt catalyst that oxidatively adds to aryl or vinyl chlorides affording medicinally important 3-hydroxy oxindole and 3-hydroxypyrrolidinone scaffolds. The development of an enantioselective version using a chiral pyrox ligand is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Herein, we report the Cu-complex catalyzed, native functional group-assisted, and TFA/NMF additives promoted (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethylation of vinylic C(sp2 )-H bond of acrylamides. Using our in-home designed reagent, this reaction enables the construction of the C(sp2 )-CF2 SO2 Ph bond from simple C-H bond activation by copper catalysis under mild reaction conditions with total Z-selectivity. The versatility of utilized fluorinated group was illustrated by its conversion into value-added CF2 moieties as well as the remarkable =CHF residue. The performed experimental and computational mechanistic studies enabled to identify the true nature of active catalyst and substrate, as well as establish critical roles of TFA and NMF additives. In this reaction, the TFA acts as a promoter of the much-needed CuII /CuII →CuIII /CuI disproportionation, while the NMF facilitates the following ligand exchange and C-C coupling processes. We ruled out the generation of radical intermediates and established the C-H activation to be irreversible and the rate-determining step of the entire process.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrated a silver/K2S2O8-mediated highly regio- and diastereoselective 6/5-exo trig radical cascade cyclization of alkyne-tethered cyclohexadienones with sulfonyl hydrazides or sodium sulfinates and subsequent selenation to access 6,6-dihydrochromenone and 6,5-fused tetrahydro benzofuranone derivatives. This reaction protocol features high functional group compatibility and has a wide substrate scope providing a variety of dihydrochromenones and tetrahydro benzofuranone derivatives in good to excellent yields. The reaction proceeds via the attack of a sulfonyl radical to alkyne over the activated Michael acceptor. The TEMPO quenching experiment implies the presence of a radical intermediate. Further synthetic versatility of 6,6- and 5,6-fused derivatives is also showcased.

Abstract
A Pd(II)-catalyzed strategy for the diastereo- and regioselective (hetero)arylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds in bile acids is accomplished with aryl and heteroaryl iodides under solvent-free conditions using the 8-aminoquinoline auxiliary as a directing group. This methodology demonstrated excellent functional group tolerance with respect to aryl/heteroaryl iodides on O-protected N-(quinolin-8-yl)cholyl/deoxycholyl amides to afford β-C(sp3)-H (hetero)arylated products in good-to-excellent yields. Moreover, the 8-aminoquinoline (AQ) auxiliary can easily be removed to obtain modified bile acids.

Abstract
A simple, cost-effective, and straightforward method for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted indole scaffolds has been developed. The present protocol involves copper-mediated tandem hydroamination followed by C-H annulation of unprotected anilines with a wide range of internal alkynes. In the presence of Cu(OAc)2·H2O and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the reaction proceeds well to afford a variety of substituted indole derivatives in moderate to good yields. This process was found to be compatible with both primary and secondary anilines coupled with aromatic/aliphatic alkynes. High-purity copper nanoparticles can be recovered after the reaction, revealing the cost-effectiveness and environmentally benign feature of the current protocol.

Abstract
The facile carbon atom abstraction reaction by [(iPr3P)Ni]5H6 (1) with various terminal alkenes to give [(iPr3P)Ni]5H4(μ5-C) (2) occurs via a common highly reactive intermediate [(iPr3P)Ni]5H4 (3), which was isolated by the reaction of 1 with norbornene. Temperature dependent 1H and 31P{1H} NMR chemical shifts of 3 are consistent with a thermally populated triplet excited state only 2 kcal mol-1 higher energy than the diamagnetic ground state. Complex 3 catalyzes the dimerization of norbornene to stereoselectively provide exclusively (Z) anti-(bis-2,2'-norbornylidene).

Abstract
The last decade has witnessed the emergence of innovative synthetic tools for the synthesis of fluorinated molecules. Among these approaches, the transition-metal-catalyzed functionalization of various scaffolds with a panel of fluorinated groups (XRF, X = S, Se, O) offered straightforward access to high value-added compounds. This review will highlight the main advances made in the field with the transition-metal-catalyzed functionalization of C(sp2) and C(sp3) centers with SCF3, SeCF3, or OCH2CF3 groups among others, by C-H bond activation. The scope and limitations of these transformations are discussed in this review.

Abstract
The development of transition metal-catalyzed β-C-H bond activation via highly-strained 4-membered metallacycles has been a formidable task. So far, only scarce examples have been reported to undergo β-C-H bond activation via 4-membered metallacycles, and all of them rely on precious metals. In contrast, earth-abundant and inexpensive 3d transition metal-catalyzed β-C-H bond activation via 4-membered metallacycles still remains an elusive challenge. Herein, we report a phosphine oxide-ligated Ni-Al bimetallic catalyst to activate secondary benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds of formamides via 4-membered nickelacycles, providing a series of α,β-unsaturated γ-lactams in up to 97% yield.

Abstract
The combined catalytic systems derived from organocatalysts and transition metals exhibit powerful activation and stereoselective-control abilities in asymmetric catalysis. This work describes a highly efficient chiral aldehyde-nickel dual catalytic system and its application for the direct asymmetric α-propargylation reaction of amino acid esters with propargylic alcohol derivatives. Various structural diversity α,α-disubstituted non-proteinogenic α-amino acid esters are produced in good-to-excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Furthermore, a stereodivergent synthesis of natural product NP25302 is achieved, and a reasonable reaction mechanism is proposed to illustrate the observed stereoselectivity based on the results of control experiments, nonlinear effect investigation, and HRMS detection.

Abstract
The unprecedented Pd-catalyzed (ethoxycarbonyl)difluoromethylthiolation reaction of various unsaturated derivatives was studied. In the presence of the (ethoxycarbonyl)difluoromethylsulfenamide reagent I and under mild reaction conditions (60 °C), both 2-(hetero)aryl and 2-(α-aryl-vinyl)pyridine derivatives were smoothly functionalized with this methodology (37 examples, up to 87 % yield). Moreover, the synthetic interest of this fluorinated moiety was further showcased by its conversion into various original fluorinated residues. Finally, a plausible mechanism for this transformation was suggested.

Abstract
In this study, a practical and straightforward synthesis of β-(E)-trifluoromethylstyrenes by ruthenium-catalyzed C-H bond activation was developed. The readily available and inexpensive 2-bromo-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (BTP), a non-ozone depleting reagent, was used as a reservoir of 3,3,3-trifluoropropyne. With this approach, the monofunctionalization of a panel of heteroarenes was possible in a safe and scalable manner (23 examples, up to 87 % yield). Mechanistic investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also conducted to get a better understanding of the mechanism of this transformation. These studies suggested that 1) a cyclometallated ruthenium complex enabled the transformation, 2) this complex exhibited high efficiency in this transformation compared to the commercially available [RuCl2 (p-cymene)]2 and 3) the mechanism proceeded through a bis-cyclometallated ruthenium intermediate for the carboruthenation step.

Abstract
Transient directing groups (TDGs) can provide a powerful means for C−H functionalization without requiring additional steps for directing group introduction and removal. We report the first use of a TDG in combination with copper to effect C−H functionalization. The regioselective copper mediated β−C(sp2)−H sulfonylation of aldehydes with sulfinate salts is accomplished using catalytic β‐alanine to form a transient imine. A broad range of sulfonylated benzaldehydes are prepared using copper fluoride as both copper source and oxidant, involving a [5,6] cupracyclic intermediate. γ‐(peri)‐Sulfonylation of napthyl and phenanthrenyl carboxaldehydes is achieved through [6,6] cupracyclic intermediates. Further derivatisation of the aldehyde products is demonstrated. Kinetic experiments and Hammett analysis suggest the turnover limiting step to be a concerted asynchronous C−H cleavage via a dearomative Wheland‐type transition state.

Abstract
![]()
A cobalt-catalyzed
intermolecular three-component coupling of arenes,
ethylene, and alkynes was developed using the well-defined air-stable
cationic bis(phosphine) cobalt(I) complex, [(dcype)Co(η6-C7H8)][BArF4]
(dcype = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane; BArF4 = B[(3,5-(CF3)2)C6H3]4), as the precatalyst. All three components were
required for turnover and formation of ortho-homoallylated
arene products. A range of directing groups including amide, ketone,
and 2-pyridyl substituents on the arene promoted the reaction. The
cobalt-catalyzed method exhibited broad functional group tolerance
allowing for the late-stage functionalization of two drug molecules,
fenofibrate and haloperidol. A series of control reactions, deuterium
labeling studies, resting state analysis, as well as synthesis of
substrate- and product-bound η6-arene complexes supported
a pathway involving C(sp2)–H activation from a cobalt(III) metallacycle.

Abstract
A visible-light-promoted radical cascade reaction of N-arylacrylamide and cyclobutanone oxime esters with sulfur dioxide insertion is established. Mainly through the exploration of the visible light wavelength, it is found that the light source has a certain influence on the formation of cyanoalkylsulfonylated oxindoles, furnishing a range of sulfones in good to excellent yields. This protocol presents good functional group compatibility and does not require transition metals, photosensitizers, external bases, or oxidants.

Abstract
A computational study on the origin of the activating effect for Pd-catalyzed directed C–H activation by the concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) mechanism is conducted. DFT calculations indicate that strong acids can make Pd catalysts coordinate with directing groups (DGs) of the substrates more strongly and lower the C–H activation energy barrier. For the CMD mechanism, the electrophilicity of the Pd center and the basicity of the corresponding acid ligand for deprotonating the C–H bond are vital to the overall C–H activation energy barrier. Furthermore, this rule might disclose the role of some additives for C–H activation.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of nickel-layered double hydroxide amalgamated Y-zeolite (NiLDH@YZ) hybrids and the evaluation of the synergistic effect of various NiLDH@YZ catalysts and mechanochemical agitation on Glaser homocoupling reactions. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments were carried out to estimate the surface area and porosity of NiLDH@YZ hybrids. The basicity and acidity of these hybrids were determined by CO2 -TPD and NH3 -TPD experiments respectively and this portrayed good acid-base bifunctional feature of the catalysts. The NiLDH@YZ-catalyzed mechanochemical Glaser coupling reaction achieved best yield of 83 % for the 0.5NiLDH@0.5YZ hybrid after 60 min of agitation, which revealed the highest acid-base bifunctional feature compared to all the investigated catalysts. The developed catalyst has proven itself as a robust and effective candidate that can successfully be employed up to four catalytic cycles without significant loss in catalytic activity, under optimized reaction conditions. This work demonstrated a new strategy for C-C bond formation enabled by the synergy between mechanochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract
Two penta-coordinated [Co(MorphBPT)Cl2]; 1 and [Co(PipBPT)Cl2]; 2 complexes with the bis-pyrazolyl-s-triazine pincer ligands MorphBPT and PipBPT were synthesized and characterized. Both MorphBPT and PipBPT act as NNN-tridentate pincer chelates coordinating the Co(II) center with one short Co-N(s-triazine) and two longer Co-N(pyrazole) bonds. The coordination number of Co(II) is five in both complexes, and the geometry around Co(II) ion is a distorted square pyramidal in 1, while 2 shows more distortion. In both complexes, the packing is dominated by Cl…H, C-H…π, and Cl…C (anion-π stacking) interactions in addition to O…H interactions, which are found only in 1. The UV-Vis spectral band at 564 nm was assigned to metal–ligand charge transfer transitions based on TD-DFT calculations. Complexes 1 and 2 showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to the respective free ligand MorphBPT and PipBPT, which were not active. MIC values indicated that 2 had better activity against S. aureus, B. subtilis, and P. vulgaris than 1. DPPH free radical scavenging assay revealed that all the studied compounds showed weak to moderate antioxidant activity where the nature of the substituent at the s-triazine core has a significant impact on the antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Due to their unique properties, fluorinated scaffolds are pivotal compounds in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. Over the last years, the development of versatile strategies for the selective synthesis of fluorinated molecules by direct C-H bond functionalization has attracted a lot of attention. In particular, the design of novel transformations based on a radical process was a bottleneck for distal C-H functionalization reactions, offering synthetic solutions for the selective introduction of fluorinated groups. This Minireview highlights the major contributions in this blossoming field. The development of new methodologies for the remote functionalization of aliphatic derivatives with various fluorinated groups based on a 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer process and a β-fragmentation reaction will be showcased and discussed.

Abstract
Efficient and selective molecular syntheses are paramount to inter alia biomolecular chemistry and material sciences as well as for practitioners in chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Organic electrosynthesis has undergone a considerable renaissance and has thus in recent years emerged as an increasingly viable platform for the sustainable molecular assembly. In stark contrast to early strategies by innate reactivity, electrochemistry was recently merged with modern concepts of organic synthesis, such as transition-metal-catalyzed transformations for inter alia C-H functionalization and asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we highlight the unique potential of organic electrosynthesis for sustainable synthesis and catalysis, showcasing key aspects of exceptional selectivities, the synergism with photocatalysis, or dual electrocatalysis, and novel mechanisms in metallaelectrocatalysis until February of 2021.

Abstract
A single-component Co(-I) catalyst, [(PPh3)3Co(N2)]Li(THF)3, has been developed for olefin hydroarylations with (N-aryl)aryl imine substrates. More than 40 examples were examined under mild reaction conditions to afford the desired alkyl-arene product in good to excellent yields. Catalysis occurs in a regioselective manner to afford exclusively branched products with styrene-derived substrates or linear products for aliphatic olefins. Electron-withdrawing functional groups (e.g., -F, -CF3, and -CO2Me) were tolerated under the reaction conditions.

Abstract
The Pd-catalyzed directed thiocyanation reaction of arenes and heteroarenes by C-H bond activation was achieved. In the presence of an electrophilic SCN source, this original methodology offered an efficient tool to access a panel of functionalized thiocyanated compounds (21 examples, up to 78 % yield). Post-functionalization reactions further demonstrated the synthetic utility of the approach by converting the SCN-containing molecules into value-added scaffolds.

Abstract
N-Aryl sulfonamides belong to a highly important class of organosulfur compounds which are found in a number of FDA-approved drugs such as dofetilide, dronedarone, ibutilide, sotalol, sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole, vemurafenib, and many more. There is therefore continuing interest in the development of novel and convenient protocols for the preparation of these pharmaceutically important compounds. Recently, direct sulfonamidation of (hetero)aromatic C–H bonds with easily available sulfonyl azides has emerged as an attractive and powerful strategy to access N-(hetero)aryl sulfonamides where non-toxic nitrogen gas forms as the sole by-product. This review highlights recent advances and developments (2012–2020) in this fast growing research area with emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions. Abstract
In this Letter, the transition-metal-catalyzed chlorination of alkenes is reported. In the presence of the commercially available and inexpensive N-chlorosuccinimide and without additive, the Pd-catalyzed chlorination of acrylamides by C-H bond activation was developed at room temperature under air. Under these mild reaction conditions, the versatility of the methodology was demonstrated as an array of acrylamides was functionalized to selectively provide the corresponding difficult-to-synthesize chlorinated olefins as a single Z stereoisomer. Mechanistic studies were conducted to get insights into the reaction mechanism, and post-functionalization reactions further demonstrated the synthetic utility of the approach toward the access to high value-added chlorinated compounds.
