Abstract
Serum lipid levels have been associated with an increased risk of suicidal behaviors. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between serum lipid levels and death by suicide among suicide attempters according to sex. Suicide attempters visiting emergency departments between 2007 and 2011 were followed up until the date of all-cause death or December 31, 2012. Sex-stratified Cox proportional hazards regression and competing risk models were constructed to obtain the hazard ratios (HR) of serum lipid measures and suicide. For each significant lipid variable in the final models, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and cumulative incidence function (CIF) were employed to compare the time to suicide between the high- and low-lipid groups based on the best cutoff point from the receiver operating characteristic curve. In 408 female attempters (65.8 %), the HR in the Cox regression model and subdistribution HR in the competing risk model for increased total cholesterol (TC) were 0.968 and 0.970, respectively. In the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and CIF, increased death by suicide was demonstrated in the low-TC group (< 165 mg/dL). Lower serum TC levels among female suicide attempters may predict suicide. More careful monitoring is warranted in women with lower TC levels who recently attempted suicide.

Abstract
Since Stern first started his work in 1938, the field has recognized several empirically supported models of the etiology of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Two such models are the Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD and the Biosocial Development Model of BPD. The Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD suggests that it is a combination of a hyperbolic temperament, traumatic childhood experiences, and an event or series of events that trigger the onset of BPD. Whereas the Biosocial Development Model of BPD elaborates on the work of Linehan's Biosocial Theory. This model suggests a combination of an emotionally vulnerable temperament and an invalidating environment cause BPD. Over 70 years of research support these models. This article covers a detailed description of each of these models, the decades of research supporting these models, similarities, differences, treatment implications, the latest research, and future directions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Abnormal sleep and nonmedical use of prescription drugs are known to be factors associated with suicidal behavior, but the nature of the association between weekday sleep duration and suicidal behavior has not been elucidated. Nonmedical use of prescription drugs may play a mediator role in the association mentioned above. PARTICIPANTS There were a total of 3,273 high school students interviewed at baseline with a response rate of 96.8% and followed up at one year (retention rate, 96.1%). The mean (SD) age of the students was 13.7 (1.0) years. METHODS Data were drawn from the longitudinal data of the School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey. A total of 12 high schools were selected in Guangzhou. Suicidal behavior, weekday sleep duration, and nonmedical use of prescription drugs were measured. RESULTS Sleeping < 7 hours/day at time 0 was positively associated with suicidal ideation (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.21-1.89) and suicide attempts (AOR = 2.35, 95% CI = 1.02-5.38) at time 1. The mediation analyses showed that baseline opioids misuse or sedatives misuse partially mediated the associations of baseline short weekday sleep duration with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts at one-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Baseline short weekday sleep duration was positively associated with subsequent suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and nonmedical use of opioids or sedatives partially mediated the associations mentioned above. Suicidal behavior can be prevented, short weekday sleep duration and nonmedical use of prescription drugs may be risk factors for suicidal behavior, and the respective roles of these factors are needed to be better understood.

Abstract
Self-Injurious and Suicidal Behavior in Young Adults, Teens, and Children With Epilepsy: A Population-Based Study Wirrell EC, Bieber EW, Vanderwiel A, et al. Epilepsia. 2020;61(9):1919-1930. doi:10.1111/epi.16618 Objective: Whereas studies in adult epilepsy patients have shown higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempt, such studies in children are limited. Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project database, we compared the risk of self-injurious behavior and suicidal ideation in a population-based cohort of childhood epilepsy to controls. Methods: We studied 339 cases with epilepsy and 678 age- and sex-matched controls followed to a median age of 24.7 and 23.4 years and identified 98 patients with self-injurious behavior or suicidal ideation (43 with epilepsy and 55 controls). All behaviors were categorized using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Results: Those with epilepsy had a significantly higher rate of any self-injurious behavior and suicidal ideation (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.04-2.35) and tended to have an increased risk of suicidal ideation and attempt (HR = 1.48, 95% CI = 0.93-2.37). The prevalence of preceding mood and substance abuse disorders was similarly high in both cases and controls with self-injurious behavior or suicidal ideation; however, preceding attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder was more than twice as common in the epilepsy cases. Among cases with epilepsy, we did not identify any specific epilepsy-related variable that was significantly correlated with risk of self-injurious behavior or suicidal ideation. Significance: Children, teens, and young adults with a history of childhood epilepsy are at greater risk of self-injurious behavior, highlighting the need for careful screening of mental health concerns as part of routine epilepsy care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of cigarette use among adolescents and to identify associated health risk behaviors. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study with a representative sample, composed of 1059 adolescents between 13 and 19 years old, enrolled in primary and secondary public schools of Olinda, Pernambuco, in 2014. Information was obtained through self-administered questionnaires (validated version of YRBS 2007). Cigarette experimentation was defined as smoking at least once in life. Adolescents who smoked at least one day within 30 days prior to the survey were considered current smokers. Most students were female and 16 years old or older. RESULTS Almost 30% used it in life and about 10% smoked within the 30 days before the survey. Suicidal ideation (PR = 1.51, 95%CI 1.25–1.82), alcohol use (PR = 1.41, 95%CI 1.03–1.92), marijuana (PR = 1.64, 95%CI 1.37–1.96), excessive alcohol consumption (PR = 1.57, 95%CI 1.15–2.16) and sexual experience (PR = 1.78, 95%CI 1.43–2.21) have increased the risk of using cigarettes. Feelings of sadness (PR = 1.70, 95%CI 1.22–2.36), alcohol use (PR=2.40, 95%CI 1.12–5.12), excessive alcohol consumption (PR = 2.5, 95% CI 1.24–5.38), marijuana (PR = 2.31, 95%CI.57–3.39) and cocaine (PR = 1.99, 95%CI.32–3.01) increased the risk of cigarette use within the 30 days before the survey. CONCLUSIONS Cigarette use among adolescents from Olinda was high, being considered higher than the national prevalence. Possible factors associated with cigarette use were drug use (alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine) and behaviors related to sexual experience, feelings of sadness and suicidal ideation.

Abstract
Introduction: Mood and anxiety disorders are leading contributors to the global burden of diseases. Comorbid mood and anxiety disorders have a lifetime prevalence of ~20% globally and increases the risk for suicide, a leading cause of death. Areas covered: In this review, authors highlight recent advances in the understanding of multilevel-neurobiological mechanisms for normal/pathological human affective-functioning. The authors then address the complex interplay between environmental-adversity and molecular-genetic mediators of brain correlates of affective-symptoms. The molecular focus is strategically limited to GTF2i, BDNF, and FKBP5 genes that are, respectively, involved in transcriptional-, neurodevelopmental- and neuroendocrine-pathway mediation of affective-functions. The importance of these genes is illustrated with studies of copy-number-variants, genome-wide association (GWAS), and candidate gene-sequence variant associations with disease etiology. Authors concluded by highlighting the predictive values of integrative neurobiological processing of gene-environment interactions for affective disorder symptom management. Expert opinion: Given the transcriptional, neurodevelopmental and neuroimmune relevance of GTF2i, BDNF, and FKBP5 genes, respectively, authors reviewed the putative roles of these genes in neurobiological mediation of adaptive affective-responses. Authors discussed the importance of studying gene-dosage effects in understanding affective disorder risk biology, and how such targeted neurogenetic studies could guide precision identification of novel pharmacotherapeutic targets and aid in prediction of treatment response.

Abstract
Self-inflicted injury (SII) is a continuum of intentionally self-destructive behaviors, including nonsuicidal self-injuries, suicide attempts, and death by suicide. These behaviors are among the most pressing yet perplexing clinical problems, affecting males and females of every race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and nearly every age. The complexity of these behaviors has spurred an immense literature documenting risk and vulnerability factors ranging from individual to societal levels of analysis. However, there have been relatively few attempts to articulate a life span developmental model that integrates ontogenenic processes across these diverse systems. The objective of this review is to outline such a model with a focus on how observed patterns of comorbidity and continuity can inform developmental theories, early prevention efforts, and intervention across traditional diagnostic boundaries. Specifically, when SII is viewed through the developmental psychopathology lens, it becomes apparent that early temperamental risk factors are associated with risk for SII and a range of highly comorbid conditions, such as borderline and antisocial personality disorders. Prevention efforts focused on early-emerging biological and temperamental contributors to psychopathology have great potential to reduce risk for many presumably distinct clinical problems. Such work requires identification of early biological vulnerabilities, behaviorally conditioned social mechanisms, as well as societal inequities that contribute to self-injury and underlie intergenerational transmission of risk.

Abstract
Current understanding of environmental cross-talk with genetic makeup is found to be mediated through an epigenetic interface which is associated with prominent reversible and heritable changes at gene expression level. Recent emergence of epigenetic modulation in shaping the genetic information has become a key regulatory factor in answering the underlying complexities associated with several mental disorders. A comprehensive understanding of the pertinent changes in the epigenetic makeup of suicide phenotype exhibits a characteristic signature with the possibility of using it as a biomarker to help predict the risk factors associated with suicide. Within the scope of this current review, the most sought after epigenetic changes of DNA methylation and histone modification are thoroughly scrutinized to understand their close functional association with the broad spectrum of suicide phenotype.

Abstract
Although involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations are associated with suicide risk, little is known about the relationship between evaluation for involuntary detention and suicide. We analyzed data on 10,082 suicides from 2000 to 2011 to examine demographics related to evaluation for detention and the association between demographics and evaluation dispositions on survival time. Evaluation preceded 11% of suicides; 53.8% of deaths occurred within 365 days, 6.5 times the expected rate. Males and older individuals were least likely to have been evaluated. Minority status and referral disposition influence 30-day survival time. Risk is highly concentrated in the first year following evaluation.

Abstract
Based on current clinical and classification concepts of suicidality, the biological parameters characteristic of suicidal behavior, completed and uncompleted suicides reported in the last few decades are discussed. The results obtained in the studies of neurotransmitter and other brain systems, immune system, lipid and other types of metabolism as well as data of neuroimaging brain studies and post-mortem investigation of brain structures are presented.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescent suicide is a complex phenomenon that has similarities and differences with adult suicidal behavior. Serotonergic (5-HT) dysfunction has extensively been studied in adults and has been postulated as a biological marker for suicide. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive review of the studies available in MEDLINE from January 1998 until January 2014 on the role of "serotonin" both in adults' and adolescents' "completed suicide", "suicide attempts", and "suicidal ideation". RESULTS Studies on 5-HT conducted in adults and replicated in adolescents have yielded inconsistent results. Although some genes related to the serotonergic system have been associated with an increased risk of suicide, attempts to reproduce those findings have been unsuccessful and a common genetic variant associated to suicidal behavior has yet to be identified. DISCUSSION Studies on the neurobiology of adolescent suicide should consider the biological specificities of this life stage and of gender differences during this period. Future research designs should also try to integrate findings in the psychological and biological domains. Prospective studies may help understand the process that leads from suicidal ideation to suicide attempts or completed suicides in this population.

BACKGROUND Much evidence supports the role of the serotonin transporter (SERT) in the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidal behaviors. METHODS In this study, we recruited 17 antidepressant-naïve patients with MDD and 17 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. SERT availability was measured in vivo with N,N-dimethyl-2-(2-amino-4-[(18)F]fluorophenylthio)benzylamine (4-[(18)F]-ADAM) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation were used to assess the severity of depression and the intent of suicide ideation prior to PET imaging. All subjects with MDD were in a current state of depression with HDRS scores ≧18. Subjects who attempted suicide within two weeks of the study onset were recruited in the depressed suicidal group (n = 8). Subjects with MDD who denied any prior suicide attempt were recruited into the depressed non-suicidal group (n = 9). RESULTS A significant reduction of SERT availability in the midbrain, thalamus, and striatum was noted in the MDD group relative to the control group (Bonferroni-adjusted p-value < 0.05). Moreover, this effect was more pronounced in the depressed suicidal group compared to the control group (Bonferroni-adjusted p-value < 0.01). Relative to both the depressed non-suicidal and control groups, the depressed suicidal group showed an increased prefrontal cortex (PFC)/midbrain SERT binding ratio (Bonferroni-adjusted p-value < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests an incongruent reduction of PFC SERT binding relative to the midbrain might discriminate between depressed suicide attempters and non-attempters in patients with MDD and may be involved in the pathophysiology of suicide behaviors.

Abstract
The role of cholesterol in psychiatric diseases has aroused the interest of the medical community, particularly in association with violent and suicidal behavior. Herein, we discuss some aspects of brain cholesterol metabolism, exploring possible mechanisms underlying the findings and reviewing the available literature on the possible neurochemical link between suicide and low or reduced levels of serum cholesterol. Most of the current hypotheses suggest a decreased serotonergic activity due to a decrease in cholesterol in the lipid rafts of synaptic membranes. Some aspects and limitations of this assumption are emphasized. In addition to serotonin hypofunction, other mechanisms have been proposed to explain increased impulsivity in suicidal individuals, including steroid modulation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor decrease, which could also be related to changes in lipid rafts. Other putative markers of suicidal behavior (e.g. protein S100B) are discussed in connection with cholesterol metabolism in the brain tissue.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serotonergic (5-HT) functioning has been shown to be inversely associated with intentional self-injurious behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between three related self-report measures of intentional self-injurious behaviors (suicidal thoughts/behavior, history of nonsuicidal self-injury, history of severe self-harm when angry) and a putative electrophysiological index of 5-HT activity, the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP). METHOD Auditory evoked potentials were recorded from 41 men (mean age = 20.69, standard deviation [SD] = 2.98) during the administration of various tone loudness stimuli, followed by completion of the self-report measures. RESULTS The component slope was associated with all measures of self-injurious behavior in the expected direction. CONCLUSION The LDAEP has the potential to be used as a noninvasive index of intentional self-harm disposition. Additional studies are needed using other populations, including women and treatment-seeking individuals, to determine if the LDAEP more broadly discriminates risk of self-injuring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Serotonergic genes are associated with suicidal behavior; this association has not been tested in stroke survivors, however. In this study, we investigated whether serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and serotonin 2a receptor (5-HTR2a) genes were associated with suicidal ideation at 2 weeks and at 1 year after stroke. METHODS A total of 286 patients were evaluated 2 weeks after stroke, and 222 (78%) participated in a follow-up evaluation one year later. Suicidal ideation was ascertained using the "suicidal thoughts" item of the Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale. Associations between suicidal ideation and 5-HTTLPR, STin2 VNTR, 5-HTR2a 1438A/G, and 5-HTR2a 102T/C genotypes were estimated using logistic regression models, and gene-gene interactions were investigated using the generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction method after adjustment for potential covariates, including depression. RESULTS The 5-HTR2a 1438 A/A genotype was significantly associated with suicidal ideation 2 weeks after stroke, before and after statistical adjustment. The 5-HTTLPR short allele was associated with suicidal ideation 2 weeks after stroke, although the significance of this finding was not evident after adjustment. No significant associations were observed between any genotype and suicidal ideation one year after stroke. No significant gene-gene interactions were detected. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with the 5-HTR2a 1438 A/A genotype were more susceptible to suicidal ideation 2 weeks after stroke. Careful evaluation and management are indicated for those with increased genetic vulnerability, particularly during the acute phase of stroke.

Abstract
New antiepileptic drugs have been known to increase the risk of suicide. Among them, levitracetam is a widely used antiepileptic drug approved as a monotherapy treatment for partial seizures or as an adjunctive therapy for partial, myoclonic and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It has been reported that the incidence of suicidal ideation during treatment with levitracetam was about 0.5-0.7%, but an explanation regarding a mechanism by which it causes suicidality is lacking. We made a multifaceted approach using the Hamilton Depression Rating Score (HDRS), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Score (HARS), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSS) ideation daily and the Sheehan Suicidality Tracking Scale (SSTS) weekly in a patient taking levitracetam who acutely developed suicidal ideation after starting the medication. Suicidal ideation disappeared within 5 days of levitracetam discontinuation. We found that decreasing HDRS and BHS scores were correlated with BSS and SSTS scores. On the other hand, HARS and BIS did not change from their baselines. Our findings suggest that suicidality induced by an antiepileptic drug may be related to depression rather than anxiety and impulsiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior reports have indicated a potential dose-response relationship between smoking and suicide. However, this relationship is controversial. METHODS This study evaluated the association between smoking and risk of death from suicide in three large-scale cohorts of U.S. men and women (n=253,033). Suicides were identified from death certificates among 43,816 men enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) between 1986 and 2008, 116,566 women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) between 1976 and 2008, and 92,651 women in the NHS II between 1989 and 2007. Information on smoking was obtained at baseline and updated every 2 years. Relative risks (RRs) of suicide were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Cohort specific RRs were pooled using random-effects models. Suicide deaths were determined by physician review of death certificates. RESULTS A total of 457 deaths from suicide were documented. Compared to never smokers, the pooled multivariate RR (95% confidence interval [CI]) of suicide was 1.15 (0.91-1.45) for former smokers and 2.69 (2.11-3.42) for current smokers. A nonmonotonic dose-response relationship was noted between the number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) and suicide risk (P trend<0.001). Compared to never smokers, the pooled multivariate RR (95% CI) was 2.59 (1.77-3.79) for those with 1-14 CPD, 2.03 (1.39-2.94) for those with 15-24 CPD, and 4.13 (2.96-5.78) for those with ≥ 25 CPD. LIMITATIONS Smoking was self-reported and had some degree of measurement error. Participants were not a representative sample of the U.S. population. CONCLUSIONS Results from three large cohorts suggest a nonmonotonic dose-response association between smoking and suicide risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The gene encoding the serotonin 1A receptor (5HTR1A) has been a candidate gene associated with suicidal behavior in case-control and meta-analysis studies. We carried out a meta-analysis and a case-control study on the 5HTR1A gene to examine the association of this gene with suicidal behavior. METHODS We performed a systematic search in electronic databases to study meta-analytically the association of 5HTR1A gene with suicidal behavior; we found 9 published genetic association studies concerning the rs6295 polymorphism. To get a comprehensive knowledge of this association we conducted a case-control study on the following polymorphisms: rs1423691, rs6295, and rs878567 in a Mexican population; the sample was composed of 152 suicide attempters and 264 healthy subjects. RESULTS The meta-analysis revealed that the rs6295 polymorphism is not associated with suicidal behavior. Similarly, no significant association for polymorphisms rs6295 and rs878567 was found in the case-control study. The polymorphism rs1423691 was excluded of the association analysis because cases and control groups were in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium. CONCLUSION The meta-analysis of functional rs6295 polymorphisms produced no association. Likewise, the analysis in our case-control study in a Mexican population resulted in lack of association of polymorphisms rs6295 and rs878567 with suicidal behavior. However, further studies assessing different populations, as well as larger samples are necessary to obtain conclusive outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several lines of evidence implicate abnormal serotonergic function in suicidal behavior and completed suicide, including low serotonin transporter binding in postmortem studies of completed suicide. We have also reported low in vivo serotonin transporter binding in major depressive disorder (MDD) during a major depressive episode using positron emission tomography (PET) with [(11)C]McN5652. We quantified regional brain serotonin transporter binding in vivo in depressed suicide attempters, depressed nonattempters, and healthy controls using PET and a superior radiotracer, [(11)C]DASB. METHODS Fifty-one subjects with DSM-IV current MDD, 15 of whom were past suicide attempters, and 32 healthy control subjects underwent PET scanning with [(11)C]DASB to quantify in vivo regional brain serotonin transporter binding. Metabolite-corrected arterial input functions and plasma free-fraction were acquired to improve quantification. RESULTS Depressed suicide attempters had lower serotonin transporter binding in midbrain compared with depressed nonattempters (p = .031) and control subjects (p = .0093). There was no difference in serotonin transporter binding comparing all depressed subjects with healthy control subjects considering six a priori regions of interest simultaneously (p = .41). CONCLUSIONS Low midbrain serotonin transporter binding appears to be related to the pathophysiology of suicidal behavior rather than of major depressive disorder. This is consistent with postmortem work showing low midbrain serotonin transporter binding capacity in depressed suicides and may partially explain discrepant in vivo findings quantifying serotonin transporter in depression. Future studies should investigate midbrain serotonin transporter binding as a predictor of suicidal behavior in MDD and determine the cause of low binding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer survivors are at higher risk of psychological problems including suicidal ideation. However, studies on suicidal ideation in breast cancer survivors have been rare and have not been investigated prospectively. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and independent risk factors for suicidal ideation within 1 week and at 1 year after breast surgery for breast cancer. METHODS A total of 284 patients with breast cancer were evaluated within 1 week after breast surgery, and 244 (84%) were followed up 1 year later. Suicidal ideation was ascertained using the item 'suicidal thoughts' from the Beck Depression Inventory. Various factors potentially related to suicidal ideation were evaluated including sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and genetic polymorphisms on serotonin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) systems. RESULTS Suicidal ideation was present in 10.9% of participants at 1 week and 11.4% at 1 year after breast surgery. Suicidal ideation was independently associated with depression and physical disability at 1 week and with living alone, anxiety, advanced cancer stage, and the BDNF met allele (but not with genetic polymorphisms on serotonergic system) at 1 year after breast surgery. CONCLUSIONS Suicidal ideation was common and had similar prevalences in both short-term and longer-term follow-ups after breast cancer. However, associated factors were substantially different between the two evaluation points, which suggest that time-specific programs may be needed for identifying and managing suicidal risk in patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that drugs which block the reuptake of catecholamine neurotransmitters improve impulse control in diseases such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) lack efficacy in ADHD and have been linked to increased suicide risk. The present study investigated drugs with affinity for one or more of the monoamine reuptake transporters using the 5-choice serial reaction time task, a model of attention and impulsivity in rodents. We also tested the effects of the alpha(2)-adreoceptor antagonist, idazoxan and novel antidepressant, agomelatine, which both increase cortical noradrenaline concentrations through non-reuptake mechanisms. Improvements in impulse control were observed with venlafaxine, a serotonin and noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitor (SNRI) but not bupropion (dopamine and noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitor). Sibutramine (SNRI) reduced premature responses by ~50% at the highest dose tested but this was not significant. All three of the SSRIs tested reduced premature responding in a dose-dependent manner, although also slowed response and collection latencies. Neither idazoxan nor agomelatine significantly reduced premature responding, suggesting a lack of efficacy at the doses tested. None of the drugs tested improved attention in this task but sibutramine (SNRI), fluoxetine (SSRI) and paroxetine (SSRI) all increased omissions at the highest dose tested. These data suggest that the SNRIs and SSRIs reduce premature responding but tend to be less specific than noradrenaline specific reuptake inhibitors in this model. SSRIs did not induce any specific impairment in impulse control in this model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mu opioid receptors have previously been shown to be altered in people with affective disorders who died as a result of suicide. We wished to determine whether these changes were more widespread and independent of psychiatric diagnoses. METHODS Mu receptor levels were determined using [3 H]DAMGO binding in BA24 from 51 control subjects; 38 people with schizophrenia (12 suicides); 20 people with major depressive disorder (15 suicides); 13 people with bipolar disorder (5 suicides) and 9 people who had no history of psychiatric disorders but who died as a result of suicide. Mu receptor levels were further determined in BA9 and caudate-putamen from 38 people with schizophrenia and 20 control subjects using [3 H]DAMGO binding and, in all three regions, using Western blots. Data was analysed using one-way ANOVAs with Bonferroni's Multiple Comparison Test or, where data either didn't approximate to a binomial distribution or the sample size was too small to determine distribution, a Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's Multiple Comparison Test. RESULTS [3 H]DAMGO binding density was lower in people who had died as a result of suicide (p<0.01). People with schizophrenia who had died as a result of suicide had lower binding than control subjects (p<0.001), whilst people with bipolar disorder (non- suicide) had higher levels of binding (p<0.05). [3 H]DAMGO binding densities, but not mu protein levels, were significantly decreased in BA9 from people with schizophrenia who died as a result of suicide (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Overall these data suggest that mu opioid receptor availability is decreased in the brains of people with schizophrenia who died as a result of suicide, which would be consistent with increased levels of endogenous ligands occupying these receptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between suicidal thinking and adolescent dating violence has not been previously explored in a sample of adolescent abortion patients. AIMS This paper highlights a study where the relationship between dating violence and severity of suicidal thinking was examined in a sample of 120 young women ages 14-21 seeking to terminate an unintended pregnancy. METHODS The Multidimensional Adolescent Assessment Scale and the Conflict in Adolescent Relationships Scale was used to gather information about psychosocial problems and dating violence so that the relationship between the two problems could be examined, while controlling for the other psychosocial problems. RESULTS The results suggest that dating violence was related to severity of suicidal thinking, and that the magnitude of this relationship was moderated by the severity of problems with aggression. CONCLUSIONS Specifically, as the severity of participant's general problems with aggression increased, the magnitude of the relationship between dating violence and severity of suicidal thinking increased. Limitations of the study and implications for practice are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have reported alterations in protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt and in its downstream target, glycogen synthase kinase 3β, in depression and suicide. The aim of the present study was to investigate possible impairment of the upstream regulators, namely phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and PTEN. METHODS The ventral prefrontal cortex (Brodmann's area 11) of 24 suicide victims and 24 drug-free nonsuicide subjects was used. The antemortem diagnoses of major depression disorder were obtained from the institutional records or psychological autopsy, and toxicological analyses were performed. Protein levels of PI3K and PTEN were assayed using the immunoblot method, and the kinase activity of PI3K and Akt was determined by phosphorylation of specific substrates. RESULTS A decrease was observed in the enzymatic activity of PI3K [ANOVA: F(3, 44) = 9.20; p < 0.001] and Akt1 [ANOVA: F(3, 44) = 13.59; p < 0.001], without any change in protein levels, in both depressed suicide victims and depressed nonsuicide subjects (p < 0.01 and p < 0.002, respectively). PTEN protein levels were increased in the same groups [ANOVA: F(3, 44) = 10.5; p < 0.001]. No change was observed in nondepressed suicide victims. CONCLUSION This study concludes that attenuation of kinase activity of PKB/Akt in depressed suicide victims may be due to the combined dysregulation of PTEN and PI3K resulting in insufficient phosphorylation of lipid second messengers. The effect is associated with major depression rather than with suicide per se. Given the cellular deficits reported in major depression, the study of enzymes involved in cell survival and neuroplasticity is particularly relevant to neurotrophic factor dysregulation in depression.

Abstract
Morning- and evening-type individuals differ on a number of psychological and biological variables. There has been increasing interest in the relationship between chronotype and personality traits. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and chronotype in suicide attempters. Eighty-nine suicide attempters were included in the study, and systematic information on suicide attempts was recorded. The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire was applied to determine chronotype, and attempter impulsivity was measured by the total score of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Significant differences between chronotype and impulsivity scores were found. Evening-type subjects reported significantly higher impulsivity scores than both neither- and morning-types. A significant association between chronotype and type of suicide attempt was detected. The largest proportion of violent suicide attempters were evening-type subjects. Violent suicide attempters also reported significantly higher impulsivity scores than nonviolent attempters. Previous studies have pointed out possible relations between eveningness and impulsivity. Current findings suggest that eveningness may be a risk factor for violent suicide attempts by increasing impulsivity.

Abstract
Childhood physical abuse (CPA) has numerous short and long-term negative effects. One of the most serious consequences of CPA is an increased risk for suicide attempts. Clarifying the mechanisms by which CPA increases risk for suicidal behavior may enhance preventive interventions. One potential mechanism is a tendency toward aggression. In a sample of 266 criminal offenders, ages 18-62, we examined the relationships among CPA, lifetime aggression, and suicide attempts and tested lifetime history of aggression as a mediator of the relationship between CPA and suicide attempts. Results indicated that CPA and aggression were associated with suicide attempts. Consistent with our hypothesis, lifetime aggression mediated the CPA and suicide attempts relationship. Findings suggest that aggression may be an important mediator of the relationship between CPA and suicide attempts among criminal offenders, and are consistent with the possibility that treating aggression may reduce risk for suicide attempts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish the epidemiology of suicide attempts in persons with psychotic disorder identified from the general population and to investigate the associations of suicidal behavior with other clinical characteristics and with physical violence against other people. METHOD A random sample of 9922 Finnish persons aged 18 years or over was screened for psychotic disorder using multiple sources of information. All screen positives and random sample of screen negatives were invited to an SCID interview. Diagnostic assessment, lifetime history of suicide attempts and violence against others were based on all available systematically evaluated information from the questionnaire, interview and/or case records. RESULTS Of persons with a lifetime history of any primary or substance-induced psychotic disorder (n = 264), 34.5% (women: 34.1%, men: 34.9%) had a history of at least one suicide attempt. There were no suicide attempts among persons with delusional disorder, while the rate of suicide attempts was higher among persons with substance-induced psychotic disorders (48.8%) than in persons with other psychotic disorders 41.8%) (χ(2) = 4.4, d.f. = 1, P = 0.036). Suicide attempts were associated with younger age, comorbid substance use disorders, depressive symptoms, and physical violence against other people. CONCLUSION Suicide attempts are common in all psychotic disorders except for delusional disorder. They are particularly common in substance-induced psychotic disorder and in persons with comorbid substance use disorders. They are associated with severe depressive symptoms but not with the severity of psychotic symptoms. Suicidal behavior correlates with physical violence against other people.

Abstract
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for adolescents and young people in the United States. The etiology of suicide in this population has eluded policy makers, researchers, and communities. Although many suicide prevention programs have been developed and implemented, few are evidence-based in their effectiveness in decreasing suicide rates. In one northern California community, adolescent suicide has risen above the state's average. Two nurses led an effort to develop and implement an innovative grassroots community suicide prevention project targeted at eliminating any further teen suicide. The project consisted of a Teen Resource Card, a community resource brochure targeted at teens, and education for the public and school officials to raise awareness about this issue. This article describes this project for other communities to use as a model. Risk and protective factors are described, and a comprehensive background of adolescent suicide is provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Varenicline (Chantix), Champix) has shown efficacy and tolerability as an aid to smoking cessation. In postmarketing surveillance, neuropsychiatric symptoms have appeared; however, their incidence and causal relationship to varenicline is not known. OBJECTIVE We assessed the incidence and relative risk (RR) of psychiatric disorders in ten randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of varenicline for smoking cessation. METHODS All smoking cessation phase II, III and IV randomized controlled clinical trials of varenicline versus placebo completed as of 31 December 2008, on file with the manufacturer (Pfizer, Inc.), were included. All studies have been published. All 3091 participants who received at least one dose of varenicline and all 2005 participants who received placebo were included in this analysis. These were men and women smoking > or =10 cigarettes/day, aged 18-75 years and without current psychiatric disease who received varenicline or placebo for 6 (one study), 12 (eight studies) or 52 (one study) weeks. Adverse events were recorded at each study visit and classified according to standard Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) terms (version 11.0). RESULTS The incidence of psychiatric disorders other than solely sleep disorders and disturbances was 10.7% in subjects treated with varenicline and 9.7% in subjects treated with placebo, with an RR of 1.02 (95% CI 0.86, 1.22). The RRs (95% CI) versus placebo of psychiatric adverse events with an incidence > or =1% in the varenicline group were 0.86 (0.67, 1.12) for anxiety disorders and symptoms, 0.76 (0.42, 1.39) for changes in physical activity, 1.42 (0.96, 2.08) for depressed mood disorders and disturbances, 1.21 (0.79, 1.83) for mood disorders and disturbances not elsewhere classified and 1.70 (1.50, 1.92) for sleep disorders and disturbances. There were no cases of suicidal ideation or behaviour in varenicline-treated subjects in the ten placebo-controlled studies analysed. However, among three trials that were excluded from the analysis because of their open-label design, two cases of suicidal ideation and one completed suicide were reported in patients who had been treated with varenicline. With the exception of sleep disorders and disturbances, there was no evidence of dose-responsivity. CONCLUSIONS There was no significant increase in overall psychiatric disorders, other than sleep disorders and disturbances, in varenicline-treated subjects in this sample of smokers without current psychiatric disorders. Ongoing studies are testing the use of varenicline in psychiatric patients.

Abstract
Suicide is an escalating public health problem, and alcohol use has consistently been implicated in the precipitation of suicidal behavior. Alcohol abuse may lead to suicidality through disinhibition, impulsiveness and impaired judgment, but it may also be used as a means to ease the distress associated with committing an act of suicide. We reviewed evidence of the relationship between alcohol use and suicide through a search of MedLine and PsychInfo electronic databases. Multiple genetically-related intermediate phenotypes might influence the relationship between alcohol and suicide. Psychiatric disorders, including psychosis, mood disorders and anxiety disorders, as well as susceptibility to stress, might increase the risk of suicidal behavior, but may also have reciprocal influences with alcohol drinking patterns. Increased suicide risk may be heralded by social withdrawal, breakdown of social bonds, and social marginalization, which are common outcomes of untreated alcohol abuse and dependence. People with alcohol dependence or depression should be screened for other psychiatric symptoms and for suicidality. Programs for suicide prevention must take into account drinking habits and should reinforce healthy behavioral patterns.

Abstract
Although antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is more common among males and borderline PD (BPD) is more common among females, some authors have suggested that the two disorders reflect multifinal outcomes of a single etiology. This assertion is based on several overlapping symptoms and features, including trait impulsivity, emotional lability, high rates of depression and suicide, and a high likelihood of childhood abuse and/or neglect. Furthermore, rates of ASPD are elevated in the first degree relatives of those with BPD, and concurrent comorbidity rates for the two disorders are high. In this article, we present a common model of antisocial and borderline personality development. We begin by reviewing issues and problems with diagnosing and studying PDs in children and adolescents. Next, we discuss dopaminergic and serotonergic mechanisms of trait impulsivity as predisposing vulnerabilities to ASPD and BPD. Finally, we extend shared risk models for ASPD and BPD by specifying genetic loci that may confer differential vulnerability to impulsive aggression and mood dysregulation among males and impulsive self-injury and mood dysregulation among females. Although the precise mechanisms of these sex-moderated genetic vulnerabilities remain poorly understood, they appear to interact with environmental risk factors including adverse rearing environments to potentiate the development of ASPD and BPD.

Abstract
Over the past several decades, research has focused increasingly on developmental precursors to psychological disorders that were previously assumed to emerge only in adulthood. This change in focus follows from the recognition that complex transactions between biological vulnerabilities and psychosocial risk factors shape emotional and behavioral development beginning at conception. To date, however, empirical research on the development of borderline personality is extremely limited. Indeed, in the decade since M. M. Linehan initially proposed a biosocial model of the development of borderline personality disorder, there have been few attempts to test the model among at-risk youth. In this review, diverse literatures are reviewed that can inform understanding of the ontogenesis of borderline pathology, and testable hypotheses are proposed to guide future research with at-risk children and adolescents. One probable pathway is identified that leads to borderline personality disorder; it begins with early vulnerability, expressed initially as impulsivity and followed by heightened emotional sensitivity. These vulnerabilities are potentiated across development by environmental risk factors that give rise to more extreme emotional, behavioral, and cognitive dysregulation. Abstract
The neurobiology of suicidality in schizophrenia is largely unknown. We therefore assessed gray and white matter volumes associated with past suicidality and current self-aggression in schizophrenia. Fifty-five outpatients with schizophrenia (n=55) and healthy controls (n=55), matched for age, gender and handedness, were recruited. Ten patients had a life-time history of one or more suicide attempts. Current self-aggression was assessed using the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. High resolution structural magnetic resonance images were analyzed by voxel-based morphometry. We found significantly larger inferior frontal white matter volumes bilaterally in patients with a previous suicide attempt as compared with those patients without a history of suicidality. No other significant white or gray matter volume differences were observed. White matter volume in these regions did not differ between healthy controls and those patients without a previous suicide attempt. Furthermore, among patients, the level of current self-aggression showed a significant positive correlation with white matter volume in the same regions. Inferior frontal white matter alterations in fronto-temporo-limbic circuits may be associated with suicidality and self-aggression in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide and depression are closely related yet distinct phenomena. In both these phenomena, research has focused on central serotonergic system disturbances. The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is the main source of serotonergic innervation of limbic structures crucial for the regulation of emotionally influenced behaviour. METHODS The study was carried out on paraffin-embedded brains from 23 depressed patients (12 suicides and 11 non-suicides) and 26 matched controls without mental disorders. The karyometric parameters of DRN neurons were evaluated by the AgNOR silver staining method. RESULTS The significant effect of suicide on the nuclear area was found in the cumulative analysis of all DRN subnuclei (ANOVA, P=0.032). A decreased mean value of this parameter was observed in the suicides group versus controls (t-test, P=0.032). This effect was especially pronounced in the violent suicide victims (t-test, P=0.001), who also demonstrated a decreased AgNOR area versus controls (t-test, P=0.007). No significant effect of depression or polarity on AgNOR parameters was found. LIMITATIONS A major limitation of this study is relatively small case number. A further limitation is given by the lack of data on drug exposure across the whole life span. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that hypoactivity of DRN neurons is a distinct phenomenon in depression, specific only for suicidal subgroup of depressed patients.

Abstract
The present article provides a conceptual framework of the relation between alcohol involvement (A) and suicide attempts (S). This framework can be broadly construed to reflect two dimensions: directionality (direction of causality; A-->S, S-->A, or a spurious relation) and temporality (distinguishing between proximal and distal effects of both behaviors). We review and evaluate the evidence on the association between A and S among adolescents using this conceptual framework as a guide. The extant data suggest that this relation is complex and not fully understood. Further, it seems unlikely that a single approach will be found to determine direction of causality, and the specification and validation of hypothesized mechanisms will involve a variety of different types of evidence. Suggestions for additional research using informative designs are discussed.

Abstract
Our postmortem study aimed to determine the impact of suicide on the number of noradrenergic neurons of the locus coeruleus (LC) in suicidal depressive patients. Noradrenergic neurons were shown by immunostaining tyrosine hydroxylase in the LC of 22 non-elderly patients with mood disorders compared to 21 age- and sex-matched normal controls. Eleven patients were suicide victims and the other eleven died of natural causes. Seven violent suicide victims revealed an increased number of tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive (TH-ir) neurons compared with non-violent suicide victims and controls. No difference was found between the number of TH-ir neurons in all suicidal patients and controls and between non-suicidal patients and controls. The differences of TH-immunoreactivity could neither be attributed to medication nor to the polarity of depressive disorder (unipolar/bipolar). The numbers of TH-ir neurons in suicidal patients correlated negatively with the mean doses of antidepressants. The study suggested a presynaptic noradrenergic dysregulation in the LC related to the level of self-aggression. Traditional antidepressants may, therefore, regulate noradrenergic activity of the LC in suicide patients, however, without demonstrating the suicide-preventing effect.

Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of the rationales, possible mechanisms and epidemiological data on the association of smoking, smoking cessation and cessation medications with suicide. Current smoking is reliably associated with suicide both in case-control and cohort studies. The three most plausible (but relatively untested) explanations for the association are that smokers have pre-existing conditions that increase their risk for suicide, smoking causes painful and debilitating conditions that might lead to suicide, and smoking decreases serotonin and monoamine oxidase levels. Stopping smoking appears to lead to major depression in some smokers; thus, it could induce suicide; however, smoking cessation has not been associated with suicide in the few studies available. Regulatory agencies have stated bupropion, rimonabant and varenicline appear to be associated with suicide; however, the data for these statements have not been presented in sufficient detail to assess their validity. Most prior data have come from post hoc analyses. Studies that a priori focus on understanding smoking and suicide are now needed.

Abstract
Discovered and crystallized over sixty years ago, serotonin's important functions in the brain and body were identified over the ensuing years by neurochemical, physiological and pharmacological investigations. This 2008 M. Rapport Memorial Serotonin Review focuses on some of the most recent discoveries involving serotonin that are based on genetic methodologies. These include examples of the consequences that result from direct serotonergic gene manipulation (gene deletion or overexpression) in mice and other species; an evaluation of some phenotypes related to functional human serotonergic gene variants, particularly in SLC6A4, the serotonin transporter gene; and finally, a consideration of the pharmacogenomics of serotonergic drugs with respect to both their therapeutic actions and side effects. The serotonin transporter (SERT) has been the most comprehensively studied of the serotonin system molecular components, and will be the primary focus of this review. We provide in-depth examples of gene-based discoveries primarily related to SLC6A4 that have clarified serotonin's many important homeostatic functions in humans, non-human primates, mice and other species.

Abstract
Impulsive aggression is characterized by an inability to regulate affect as well as aggressive impulses, and is highly comorbid with other mental disorders including depression, suicidal behavior, and substance abuse. In an effort to elucidate the neurobiological underpinnings of impulsive aggression and to help account for its connections with these other disorders, this paper reviews relevant biochemical, brain imaging, and genetic studies. The review suggests that dysfunctional interactions between serotonin and dopamine systems in the prefrontal cortex may be an important mechanism underlying the link between impulsive aggression and its comorbid disorders. Specifically, serotonin hypofunction may represent a biochemical trait that predisposes individuals to impulsive aggression, with dopamine hyperfunction contributing in an additive fashion to the serotonergic deficit. The current paper proposes a modified diathesis-stress model of impulsive aggression in which the underlying biological diathesis may be deficient serotonergic function in the ventral prefrontal cortex. This underlying disposition can be manifested behaviorally as impulsive aggression towards oneself and others, and as depression under precipitating life stressors. Substance abuse associated with impulsive aggression is understood in the context of dopamine dysregulation resulting from serotonergic deficiency. Also discussed are future research directions in the neurobiology of impulsive aggression and its comorbid disorders.

Abstract
This article provides an update on suicidal behaviors in young women. The rates of completed suicide and suicide attempts among young women are reviewed, and the impact of race and ethnicity on these rates is described. The risk and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviors in young women are discussed, including stressful life events, mental disorders, and hormonal factors. Finally, some considerations for treating suicidal young women are included.

Abstract
Although many studies have examined the neurobiological aspects of suicide, the molecular mechanisms and pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with suicide remain unclear. In this study, it is aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels among suicide attempters without a major psychiatric disorder, compared to major depressive disorder patients and healthy subjects. It was undertaken with the hypothesis that suicide per se lowers serum BDNF levels, since it is a source of stress. The study was carried out in Celal Bayar University Hospital, Manisa, Turkey. Ten suicide attempters, 24 patients with major depressive disorder and 26 subjects without any psychiatric diagnosis and any psychiatric treatment were included in the study. All subjects were asked to give their written consent. Blood samples were collected at the baseline. Serum BDNF was kept at -70 degrees C before testing, and assayed with an ELISA kit (Promega; Madison, Wisc., USA) after dilution with the block and sample solution provided with the kit. The data were subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis test for nonparametric analysis of variance. Mean serum BDNF levels were significantly lower in the suicide group (21.2 +/- 12.4 ng/ml) and the major depressive disorder group (21.2 +/- 11.3 ng/ml) than the control group (31.4 +/- 8.8 ng/ml; p = 0.004). These results suggest that BDNF may play an important role in the neurobiology of suicidal behavior. BDNF levels may be a biological marker for suicidal behavior. To investigate the role of BDNF in suicide, further studies with a wider sample size and a variety of psychiatric diagnoses accompanying suicide attempt are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Motor symptoms form the hallmark of Parkinson's Disease (PD), although features like depression are often present. Depression rating scales [e.g. Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)] used in PD measure affective, cognitive and somatic symptoms. An important clinical question is which items of the MADRS are likely to be influenced by PD symptoms. METHODS Depression was assessed in 43 PD patients who scored below the cut-off of the MADRS and who differed widely in motor severity. RESULTS Parkinson's Disease patients scored relatively highest on Concentration difficulties, Reduced sleep and Inner tension. Reduced sleep, Lassitude and Suicidal thoughts were associated with motor severity and specifically with Bradykinesia, Rigidity and Axial impairment, however not with Tremor. To avoid a possible influence on our results of coincidentally included PD patients with a depression, all associations between somatic MADRS items and motor severity were corrected for the influence of affective symptoms of depression. All associations remained significant. DISCUSSION In conclusion, the items Reduced sleep and Lassitude of the MADRS are likely to be influenced by motor symptoms. The high score on Concentration difficulties is suggested to be a reflection of cognitive dysfunction in PD. Thus, when assessing depression in PD, using a depression rating scale like the MADRS, adjusted cut-off scores are required.

Abstract
Psychiatric disorders may co-occur in the same individual. These include, for example, substance abuse or obsessive-compulsive disorder with schizophrenia, and movement disorders or epilepsy with affective dysfunctional states. Medications may produce iatrogenic effects, for example cognitive impairments that co-occur with the residual symptoms of the primary disorder being treated. The observation of comorbid disorders in some cases may reflect diagnostic overlap. Impulsivity, impulsiveness or impulsive behaviour is implicated in a range of diagnostic conditions including substance abuse, affective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. These observations suggest a need to re-evaluate established diagnostic criteria and disorder definitions, focusing instead on symptoms and symptom-profiles.

Depression has been established as the main cause of suicide and the research has concentrated on disturbed central serotonergic system in both disorders. The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) of brain stem is the main source of serotonergic innervation of limbic structures fundamental in the regulation of emotionally influenced behavior. The study was carried out on paraffin-embedded brains from 10 depressive patients, among them 5 suicides and 5 non-suicides and 13 matched mentally healthy controls. The karyometric parameters of DRN neurons were evaluated by AgNOR (Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer) silver staining method. The significant effect of suicide on nuclear area and AgNOR-ratio found in the cumulative analysis of all DRN subnuclei could be relevant for forensic diagnostic. The results suggest DRN neurons hypoactivity specific for suicide. Whether observed phenomenon is a "common trait" existing also in other diagnostic groups of mental disorders remains an open question.

Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of mortality among adolescents. There is a pressing public health need to investigate triggers and novel vulnerabilities for suicide in order to improve risk assessment and develop innovative prevention strategies. Alcohol is a well established risk factor for adolescent suicide. In this paper, we outline a novel mechanism linking allergy, alcohol, and suicide, reviewing (a) the association between allergic inflammation, depression, and suicide; and (b) the role of alcohol in inducing phosphorylation and rearrangement of tight junction proteins of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) resulting in increased "leakiness", i.e. passage of cells and molecules. Seasonal peaks of suicide in spring have been consistently reported, but their causality is poorly understood. A preliminary epidemiologic study found increased nonviolent suicide rates in females in spring during intervals of high tree pollen, in comparison to similar intervals of low tree pollen. This initial report added to the emerging literature proposing a relationship between allergy and depression, and is being further pursued at clinical, epidemiological, animal and postmortem tissue levels. We propose that allergic inflammation influences depression-related brain function via molecular and cellular mediators, but those mediators have a very limited access to the brain when the BBB is intact. Alcohol intake disrupts BBB, allowing increased brain exposure to cellular mediators of allergy. Considering the greater prevalence of allergy in adolescence when alcohol use starts, studies investigating the connection between allergy, alcohol, and suicide should be expanded to also include a focus on youth.

Abstract
The ABCG1 transporter seems to be involved in human cholesterol and sterol homeostasis. As alterations in cholesterol homeostasis have been widely linked to aggression, violence and suicidal behavior, we considered ABCG1 as a candidate gene for these traits. We studied 5 gene variants of ABCG1 in a sample of 571 suicide attempters, healthy controls and suicide completers. We also analyzed the relation to aggression-related traits, assessed by STAXI and FAF. Regarding the genotypes, there was no association with completed or attempted suicide with the tested SNPs. Regarding alleles, only one SNP (rs1044317) showed a slight association with suicide attempters in comparison to the controls. Interestingly, rs225374 G allele carriers had higher scores on the STAXI subscales "State Anger" and "Anger Out", as well as on the FAF subscales "Spontaneous Aggression", "Irritability" and "Aggression". Carriers of the rs914189 G allele scored higher on the FAF subscales "Spontaneous Aggression", "Reactive Aggression" and "Aggression". Carriers of the rs1044317 G allele had lower scores for STAXI "Trait Anger" and "Trait Temperament", and higher scores for STAXI "Anger Control". Our results provide evidence that the ABCG1 may influence aggression-related traits. Given that these represent intermediate phenotypes of suicidal behavior, ABCG1 might also act on suicidal behavior through these traits. The observed associations warrant further replications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Past studies in the neurobiology of suicide have reported alterations in serotonin and downstream effectors, such as Akt/protein kinase B. In this study, we aimed to examine possible abnormality in the Akt/glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) axis of depressed suicide victims' brains. METHODS Twenty suicide victims and 20 drug-free non-suicide subjects were included for a postmortem study. The ventral prefrontal cortex area (BA'11) was used, and antemortem diagnoses of major depression disorder (MDD) (DSM-IV) were made from Institution's records. The protein levels of GSK-3alpha/beta and Akt-1 were assayed with the Western blot method, and the kinase activity of Akt and GSK-3alpha/beta were determined by phosphorylation of specific substrates. RESULTS There was no change either in GSK-3alpha/beta and Akt-1 protein levels or in lithium-inhibitable total GSK-3alpha/beta enzyme activity of the ventral prefrontal cortex. The enzyme activity of Akt decreased significantly [analysis of variance (ANOVA): F(3,36)=5.372; p= .003], whereas GSK-3beta activity increased significantly [ANOVA: F(3,36)=8.567; p= .002] in depressed suicide victims and non-suicide subjects but not in non-depressed suicide victims. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the activity rather than the protein levels of Akt and GSK-3beta was altered. The alteration was associated with MDD rather than with suicide per se.
