Divergent Synthesis of Pyrazoles via Manganese Pincer Complex Catalyzed Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling Reactions

This report detailed the synthesis of multi-substituted pyrazoles through the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) reaction catalyzed by a well-defined manganese(I)-pincer complex. Symmetrically substituted pyrazoles were synthesized by reacting 1,3-diols with hydrazines. Unsymmetrically substituted pyrazoles were selectively made via the ADC of primary alcohols with methyl hydrazones. Water and hydrogen are liberated as the green byproducts. The endurance of these methodologies has been presented by producing 30 substrates with varied functionalities. Model reactions were scaled up to demonstrate practicability. The reaction rate and order were measured to transparent the involvement of the reagents during catalysis. Control experiments elucidated the plausible reaction mechanisms.

Reduction of sulfoxides catalyzed by the commercially available manganese complex MnBr(CO)5

A new methodology for the reduction of a wide variety of aliphatic and aromatic sulfoxides catalyzed by the air-stable, cheap and commercially available manganese catalyst MnBr(CO)5 with excellent yields is reported in this work. The catalytic system MnBr(CO)5/PhSiH3 is highly chemoselective, allowing the effective reduction of the SO bond in the presence of different functional groups.

Manganese(I)-Catalyzed Enantioselective C(sp2)-C(sp3) Bond-Forming for the Synthesis of Skipped Dienes with Synergistic Aminocatalysis

Mn(I)-catalyzed enantioselective C-C bond-forming reactions represent a great challenge in homogeneous catalysis primarily due to a limited understanding of its mechanistic principles. Herein, we have developed an interesting catalytic strategy that leverages a synergistic combination of a dimeric manganese(I) catalyst and a chiral aminocatalyst to address this issue. A range of conjugated dienals and trienals can exclusively proceed 1,4-hydroalkenylation by using readily available aromatic and aliphatic alkenyl boronic acids as coupling partners, producing a rich library of skipped diene aldehydes in synthetically useful yields and high levels of enantioselectivities. Notably, downstream transformations of these products can not only afford a concise approach to construct enantioenriched skipped trienes but also realize enantioselective total synthesis of analogues to (-)-Blepharocalyxin D in four steps. DFT calculations suggest the 1,4-hydroalkenylation is kinetically more favorable than 1,6-hydroalkenylation.

Single-Atom Mn Catalysts via Integration with Mn Sub Nano-Clusters Synergistically Enhance Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Integrating single atoms and clusters into one system represents a novel strategy for achieving the desired catalytic performance. In comparison to single-atom catalysts, catalysts combining single atoms and clusters harness the advantages of both, thus displaying greater potential. Nevertheless, constructing single-atom-cluster systems remains challenging, and the fundamental mechanism for enhancing catalytic activity remains elusive. In this study, a directly confined preparation of a 3D hollow sea urchin-like carbon structure (MnSA/MnAC-SSCNR) is developed. Mn single atoms synergistically interact with Mn clusters, optimizing and reducing energy barriers in the reaction pathway, thus enhancing reaction kinetics. Consequently, in contrast to Mn single-atom catalysts (MnSA-SSCNR), MnSA/MnAC-SSCNR exhibits significantly improved oxygen reduction activity, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.90 V in 0.1 m KOH, surpassing that of MnSA-SSCNR and Pt/C. This work demonstrates a strategy of remote synergy between heterogeneous single atoms and clusters, which not only contributes to electrocatalytic reactions but also holds potential for reactions involving more complex products.

Questing for homoleptic mononuclear manganese complexes with monodentate O-donor ligands

Compounds containing Mn-O bonds are of utmost importance in biological systems and catalytic processes. Nevertheless, mononuclear manganese complexes containing all O-donor ligands are still rare. Taking advantage of the low tendency of the pentafluoroorthotellurate ligand (teflate, OTeF5) to bridge metal centers, we have synthesized two homoleptic manganese complexes with monomeric structures and an all O-donor coordination sphere. The tetrahedrally distorted MnII anion, [Mn(OTeF5)4]2-, can be described as a high spin d5 complex (S = 5/2), as found experimentally (magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy) and using theoretical calculations (DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2). The high spin d4 electronic configuration (S = 2) of the MnIII anion, [Mn(OTeF5)5]2-, was also determined experimentally and theoretically, and a square pyramidal geometry was found to be the most stable one for this complex. Finally, the bonding situation in both complexes was investigated by means of the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) methodology and compared to that of hypothetical mononuclear fluoromanganates. Within each pair of [MnXn]2- (n = 4, 5) species (X = OTeF5, F), the Mn-X interaction is found to be comparable, therefore proving that the similar electronic properties of the teflate and the fluoride are also responsible for the stabilization of these unique species.

One-pot C-N/C-C bond formation and oxidation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with tetrahydroisoquinolines: access to benzo-fused indolizines

One-pot C-N/C-C bond formation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) with tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) has been achieved to furnish benzo-fused indolizines. These reactions involve a MgI2-catalyzed ring opening of DACs and oxidative annulation using Mn(OAc)3·2H2O. The substrate scope and functional group diversity are the important practical features.

Blue-Light Irradiated Mn(0)-Catalyzed Hydroxylation and C(sp3 )-H Functionalization of Unactivated Alkanes with C(sp2 )-H Bonds of Quinones for Alkylated Hydroxy Quinones and Parvaquone

Site-selective C(sp3 )-H functionalization of unreactive hydrocarbons is always challenging due to its inherited chemical inertness, slightly different reactivity of various C-H bonds, and intrinsically high bond dissociation energies. Here, a site-selective C-H alkylation of naphthoquinone with unactivated hydrocarbons using Mn2 (CO)10 as a catalyst under blue-light (457 nm) irradiation without any external acid or base and pre-functionalization is presented. The selective C-H functionalization of tertiary over secondary and secondary over primary C(sp3 )-H bonds in abundant chemical feedstocks was achieved, and hydroxylation of quinones was realized in situ by employing the developed methodology. This protocol provides a new catalytic system for the direct construction of high-value-added compounds, namely, parvaquone (a commercially available drug used to treat theileriosis) and its derivatives under ambient reaction conditions. Moreover, this operationally simple protocol applies to various linear-, branched-, and cyclo-alkanes with high degrees of site selectivity under blue-light irradiated conditions and could provide rapid and straightforward access to versatile methodologies for upgrading feedstock chemicals. Mechanistic insight by radical trapping, radical scavenging, EPR, and other controlled experiments well corroborated with DFT studies suggest that the reaction proceeds by a radical pathway.

Transition-Metal Catalyzed Synthesis of Pyrimidines: Recent Advances, Mechanism, Scope and Future Perspectives

Pyrimidine is a pharmacologically important moiety that exhibits diverse biological activities. This review reflects the growing significance of transition metal-catalyzed reactions for the synthesis of pyrimidines (with no discussion being made on the transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of pyrimidines). The effect of different catalysts on the selectivity/yields of pyrimidines and catalyst recyclability (wherever applicable) are described, together with attempts to illustrate the role of the catalyst through mechanisms. Although several methods have been researched for synthesizing this privileged scaffold, there has been a considerable push to expand transition metal-catalyzed, sustainable, efficient and selective synthetic strategies leading to pyrimidines. The aim of the authors with this update (2017-2023) is to drive the designing of new transition metal-mediated protocols for pyrimidine synthesis.

Gold-Manganese Bimetallic Redox Coupling with Light

The classical Au(I)/Au(III) redox couple chemistry has been limited to constructing C-C and C-X bonds, and thus, the exploration of the elementary reaction of gold redox coupling is very significant to enrich its organometallic features. Herein, we report the first visible-light-mediated, external oxidant-free Au(I)/Au(III) redox couple using commercially available Mn2(CO)10 to generate Mn-Au(III)-Mn intermediates for bimetallic redox coupling. A wide range of structurally diverse heterodinuclear and polynuclear L-Au(I)-Mn-L' complexes (19 examples, up to >99% yields) are readily constructed, providing a robust strategy for the concise construction of Au-Mn complexes under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic studies together with DFT calculations support the radical oxidative addition of •Mn(CO)5 to gold and bimetallic reductive elimination mechanisms from highly active Mn-Au(III)-Mn species, representing an important step toward an elementary reaction in gold chemistry research. Furthermore, the resulting Au-Mn complexes exhibit unique catalytic activity, with which divergent reductive coupling of nitroarenes can readily afford azoxybenzenes, azobenzenes, and hydrazobenzenes in moderate to good yields.

Short, Scalable Access to Pyrrovobasine

A concise gram-scale synthesis of pyrrovobasine (1) is reported. Key transformations include a three-step decagram-scale synthesis of the tetracyclic compound, Mn-mediated direct radical cyclization, and the introduction of a naturally rare pyrraline structure. The synthesis is designed to be applicable to gram-scale synthesis using inexpensive and readily available reagents.

2-Hydroxypyridine-based Ligands as Promoter in Ruthenium(II) Catalyzed C-H Bond Activation/Arylation Reactions

A class of 2-hydroxypyridine based ligands are explored to achieve enhanced catalytic activity for ortho-C-H bond activation/arylation reaction over [(η6 -p-cymene)RuCl2 ]2 catalyst in water. Extensive studies using a series of substituted 2-hydroxypyridine based ligands (L1-L6) inferred that 5-trifluoromethyl-2-hydroxypyridine (L6) exhibited favorable effects to enhance the catalytic activity of Ru(II) catalyst for ortho C-H bond arylation of 2-phenylpyridine by 8 folds compared to those performed without ligands. The (η6 -p-cymene)Ru - L6 system also exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for ortho C-H bond arylation of 2-phenylpyridine using a variety of aryl halides. NMR and mass investigations inferred the presence of several ligand coordinated Ru(II) species, suggesting the involvement of these species in C-H bond activation reaction. Further in concurrence with the experimental findings, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations also evidenced the prominent role of 2-hydroxypyridine based ligands in Ru(II) catalyzed C-H bond arylation of 2-phenylpyridine with lower energy barrier for the C-H activation step.

Manganese/Cobalt Bimetallic Relay Catalysis for Divergent Dehydrogenative Difluoroalkylation of Alkenes

The involvement of manganese radical for halogen atom transfer (XAT) reactions has been esteemed as one reliable method but encountered with limited catalytic models. In this paper, a novel bimetallic relay catalysis of Mn2 (CO)10 and cobaloxime has been developed for divergent dehydrogenative difluoroalkylation of alkenes using commercially available difluoroalkyl bromides. A wide range of structurally diverse terminal, cyclic and internal alkenes as well as tetrasubstituted alkenes are found to be good coupling partners to deliver difluoroalkylated allylic products and difluoromethylated cyclic products, accompanied with the production of H2 as the by-product. This bimetallic relay strategy features broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions and excellent functional group compatibility. Its success represents an important step-forward to expedite the construction of a rich library of difluoroalkylated products.

HiREX: High-Throughput Reactivity Exploration for Extended Databases of Transition-Metal Catalysts

A method is introduced for the automated analysis of reactivity exploration for extended in silico databases of transition-metal catalysts. The proposed workflow is designed to tackle two key challenges for bias-free mechanistic explorations on large databases of catalysts: (1) automated exploration of the chemical space around each catalyst with unique structural and chemical features and (2) automated analysis of the resulting large chemical data sets. To address these challenges, we have extended the application of our previously developed ReNeGate method for bias-free reactivity exploration and implemented an automated analysis procedure to identify the classes of reactivity patterns within specific catalyst groups. Our procedure applied to an extended series of representative Mn(I) pincer complexes revealed correlations between structural and reactive features, pointing to new channels for catalyst transformation under the reaction conditions. Such an automated high-throughput virtual screening of systematically generated hypothetical catalyst data sets opens new opportunities for the design of high-performance catalysts as well as an accelerated method for expert bias-free high-throughput in silico reactivity exploration.

A Family of Cagelike Mn-Silsesquioxane/Bathophenanthroline Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic and Antifungal Activity

This study reports a novel family of cage manganesesilsesquioxanes prepared via complexation with bathophenanthroline (4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline). The resulting Mn4-, Mn6Li2-, and Mn4Na-compounds exhibit several unprecedented cage metallasilsesquioxane structural features, including intriguing self-assembly of silsesquioxane ligands. Complexes were tested in vitro for fungicidal activity against seven classes of phytopathogenic fungi. The representative Mn4Na-complex acts as a catalyst in the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides under solvent-free conditions to form cyclic carbonates in good yields.

Dimeric Manganese-Catalyzed Hydroalkenylation of Alkynes with a Versatile Silicon-Based Directing Group

Herein, we present a manganese-catalyzed, branched-selective hydroalkenylation of terminal alkynes, under mild conditions through facile installation of a versatile silanol as a removable directing group. With an alkenyl boronic acid as the coupling partner, this reaction produces stereodefined (E,E)-1,3-dienes with high regio-, chemo- and stereoselectivity. The protocol features mild reaction conditions such as room temperature and an air atmosphere, while maintaining excellent functional group compatibility. The resulting 1,3-dienesilanol products serve as versatile building blocks, as the removal of the silanol group allows for the synthesis of both branched terminal 1,3-dienes for downstream coupling reactions, as well as stereoselective construction of linear (E,E)-1,3-dienes and (E,E,E)- or (E,E,Z)-1,3,5-trienes. In addition, a Diels-Alder cycloaddition can smoothly and selectively deliver silicon-containing pentasubstituted cyclohexene derivatives. Mechanistic investigations, in conjunction with DFT calculations, suggest a bimetallic synergistic activation model to account for the observed enhanced catalytic efficiency and good regioselectivity.

Study of Cyclohexane and Methylcyclohexane Functionalization Promoted by Manganese(III) Compounds

Alkane functionalization using safe and low-energy processes is of great interest to industry and academia. Aiming to contribute to the process of saturated hydrocarbon functionalization, we have studied a set of three manganese(III) complexes as catalysts for promoting the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons (cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide or trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA). The mononuclear manganese(III) compounds were prepared using the ligands H2LMet4 (6,6’-((1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-dimethylphenol), H2salen (2,2’-((1E,1’E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))diphenol) and H2salan (2,2’-((ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(methylene))diphenol). The catalytic processes were carried out in acetonitrile at 25 and 50 °C for 24 h. The increase in the temperature was important to get a better conversion. The compounds did not promote cyclohexane oxidation in the presence of H2O2. However, they were active in the presence of TCCA, employing a ratio of 1000:333:1 equivalents of the substrate:TCCA:catalyst. The best catalytic activity was shown by the compound [Mn(salen)Cl], reaching conversions of 14.5 ± 0.3% (25 °C) and 26.3 ± 1.1% (50 °C) (yield for chlorocyclohexane) and up to 12.1 ± 0.5% (25 °C) and 29.8 ± 2.2% (50 °C) (total yield for the mixture of the products 1-chloro-4-methylcyclohexane, 3-methylcyclohexene and 1-methylcyclohexene). The interaction of the catalysts with TCCA was studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), suggesting that the catalysts [Mn(LMet4)Cl] and [Mn(salan)Cl] act via a different mechanism from that observed for [Mn(salen)Cl].

Metal-Ligand Cooperativity in MnI -Catalysed N-Formylation of Secondary Amides and Lactams Using CO2 at Room Temperature

A Mn^I catalyst featuring redox-active tridentate phenalenyl (PLY) ligand has been used for catalytic N-formylation of secondary amides and lactams under 1 atm CO₂ as a C₁ source at room temperature for the first time. The protocol is applicable to a wide range of secondary amides including heterocycles, bio-active cinnamide derivatives and the diversification of therapeutic molecules. In-depth mechanistic investigations based on experimental outcomes and DFT calculations suggested an unconventional metal-ligand cooperation, where a ligand-centred radical plays a crucial role in initiating the reaction process.

Manganese-Catalyzed Hydrogenative Desulfurization of Thioamides

Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has emerged as an important alternative to noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, there has been no Earth-abundant transition metal catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides reported so far, presumably due to the poisoning of catalysts by sulfur-containing molecules. Herein, we described the first manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines. The key to success is the use of MnBr(CO)₅ instead of commonly-employed pincer-manganese catalysts, together with simple NEt₃ and CuBr. This protocol features excellent selectivity on sole cleavage of the C=S bond of thioamides, in contrast to the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and unprecedented chemo-selectivity tolerating vulnerable functional groups such as nitrile, ketone, aldehyde, ester, sulfone, nitro, olefin, alkyne and heterocycle, which are usually susceptible to common hydride-type reductive protocols.

Manganese-catalyzed hydroarylation of multiple bonds

Transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has become a promising strategy in organic synthesis due to its improved atom-, step- and resource economy. Considering the Earth's abundance, economic benefits, and low toxicity, 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation have received a significant focus. In particular, organometallic manganese-catalyzed C-H activation has proven to be versatile and suitable for a wide range of transformations such as C-H addition to π-components, arylation, alkylation, alkynylation, amination, and many more. Among them, manganese-catalyzed C-H addition to C-C and C-heteroatom multiple bonds exhibited unique and promising reactivity to construct a wide range of complex organic molecules. In this review, we highlight the developments in the field of manganese-catalyzed hydroarylation of multiple bonds via C-H activation with a range of applications until August 2022.

Manganese-Catalyzed Chemoselective Hydrosilylation of Nitroarenes: Sustainable Route to Aromatic Amines

Herein we report efficient catalytic hydrosilylations of nitroarenes to form the corresponding aromatic amines using a well-defined manganese(II)-NNO pincer complex with a low catalyst loading (1 mol %) under solvent-free conditions. This base-metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation is an easy and sustainable alternative to classical hydrogenation. A large variety of nitroarenes bearing various functionalities were selectively transformed into the corresponding aromatic amines in good yields. The potential utility of the present catalytic protocol was demonstrated by the preparation of commercial drug molecules.

Visible-light-induced Mn(0)-catalyzed direct C-3 mono-, di- and perfluoroalkylation reactions of 2H-indazoles

A general and efficient method for visible-light-driven fluoroalkylation, such as difluoromethylphosphonation, difluoroacetamidation, monofluoromethylation, difluoromethylation, and perfluoroalkyalation, of 2H-indazoles using an inexpensive Mn₂(CO)₁₀ photocatalyst has been developed. The present methodology affords a new series of C-3 fluoroalkylated 2H-indazole derivatives with wide functional group tolerance in good to excellent yields. Difluoromethylenated indiazoles are also prepared from difluoroester derivatives. Our mechanistic investigations support a radical pathway for the reaction.

Homogeneous Manganese-Catalyzed Hydrofunctionalizations of Alkenes and Alkynes: Catalytic and Mechanistic Tendencies

In recent years, many manganese-based homogeneous catalytic precursors have been developed as powerful alternatives in organic synthesis. Among these, the hydrofunctionalizations of unsaturated C-C bonds correspond to outstanding ways to afford compounds with more versatile functional groups, which are commonly used as building blocks in the production of fine chemicals and feedstock for the industrial field. Herein, we present an account of the Mn-catalyzed homogeneous hydrofunctionalizations of alkenes and alkynes with the main objective of finding catalytic and mechanistic tendencies that could serve as a platform for the works to come.

Carboxylic Acid-Directed Manganese(I)-Catalyzed Regioselective Hydroarylation of Unactivated Alkenes

A carboxylic acid-directed regioselective hydroarylation reaction of unactivated alkenes with aryl boronic acids was reported. This transformation was enabled by homogeneous manganese catalyst MnBr(CO)₅ in the presence of KOH and H₂O in the m-xylene reaction medium. Both internal and terminal alkenes worked well in this transformation, and a series of functional groups were tolerated. This reaction not only provided an expeditious method to prepare γ-aryl carboxylic acids from simple starting materials but also would inspire further studies in employing homogeneous manganese catalysis in organic synthesis.

Manganese‐Catalysed Deuterium Labelling of Anilines and Electron‐Rich (Hetero)Arenes

There is a constant need for deuterium‐labelled products for multiple applications in life sciences and beyond. Here, a new class of heterogeneous catalysts is reported for practical deuterium incorporation in anilines, phenols, and heterocyclic substrates. The optimal material can be conveniently synthesised and allows for high deuterium incorporation using deuterium oxide as isotope source. This new catalyst has been fully characterised and successfully applied to the labelling of natural products as well as marketed drugs.

Well-Defined Phosphine-Free Manganese(II)-Complex-Catalyzed Synthesis of Quinolines, Pyrroles, and Pyridines

Herein, we report a simple, phosphine-free, and inexpensive catalytic system based on a manganese(II) complex for synthesizing different important N-heterocycles such as quinolines, pyrroles, and pyridines from amino alcohols and ketones. Several control experiments, kinetic studies, and DFT calculations were carried out to support the plausible reaction mechanism. We also detected two potential intermediates in the catalytic cycle using ESI-MS analysis. Based on these studies, a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism was proposed.

Selective Labeling of Peptides with o-Carboranes via Manganese(I)-Catalyzed C-H Activation

A robust method for the selective labeling of peptides via manganese(I) catalysis was devised to achieve the C-2 alkenylation of tryptophan containing peptides with 1-ethynyl-o-carboranes. The manganese-catalyzed C-H activation was accomplished with high catalytic efficiency, and featured low toxicity, high functional group tolerance and excellent E-stereoselectivity. This approach unravels a promising tool for the assembly of o-carborane with structurally complex peptides of relevance to applications in boron neutron capture therapy.

Homogeneous Carbon Capture and Catalytic Hydrogenation: Toward a Chemical Hydrogen Battery System

Recent developments of CO₂ capture and subsequent catalytic hydrogenation to C1 products are discussed and evaluated in this Perspective. Such processes can become a crucial part of a more sustainable energy economy in the future. The individual steps of this catalytic carbon capture and usage (CCU) approach also provide the basis for chemical hydrogen batteries. Here, specifically the reversible CO₂/formic acid (or bicarbonate/formate salts) system is presented, and the utilized catalysts are discussed.

Manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and hydroelementation reactions

The emerging field of organometallic catalysis has shifted towards research on Earth-abundant transition metals due to their ready availability, economic advantage, and novel properties. In this case, manganese, the third most abundant transition-metal in the Earth's crust, has emerged as one of the leading competitors. Accordingly, a large number of molecularly-defined Mn-complexes has been synthesized and employed for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and hydroelementation reactions. In this regard, catalyst design is based on three pillars, namely, metal-ligand bifunctionality, ligand hemilability, and redox activity. Indeed, the developed catalysts not only differ in the number of chelating atoms they possess but also their working principles, thereby leading to different turnover numbers for product molecules. Hence, the critical assessment of molecularly defined manganese catalysts in terms of chelating atoms, reaction conditions, mechanistic pathway, and product turnover number is significant. Herein, we analyze manganese complexes for their catalytic activity, versatility to allow multiple transformations and their routes to convert substrates to target molecules. This article will also be helpful to get significant insight into ligand design, thereby aiding catalysis design.

Manganese-catalyzed Synthesis of Imines from Primary Alcohols and Aromatic Amines

Herein, we describe the synthesis of a wide variety of imines through oxidative coupling of alcohols and (hetero)aromatic amines catalyzed by Mn complexes bearing N^N triazole ligands. A wide variety of imines in excellent yields (up to 99%) have been prepared. Mn-based catalysts proved to be highly efficient and versatile, allowing for the first time, the preparation of several imines containing N-based heterocycles.

Mn2(CO)10 and UV light: a promising combination for regioselective alkene hydrosilylation at low temperature

The low temperature regioselective hydrosilylation of various alkenes with (1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane) MD^HM is described using Mn₂(CO)₁₀ under UV irradiation with Mn loadings as low as 1 mol%, in the absence of additives and with excellent selectivity and yields. The generation of a manganese radical allowed the anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation products to be selectively obtained in yields up to 99%.

Noncovalent Interaction- and Steric Effect-Controlled Regiodivergent Selectivity in Dimeric Manganese-Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Internal Alkynes: A Computational Study

Selective hydroarylation of internal alkynes catalyzed by a dimeric manganese complex provides a powerful strategy for the construction of multisubstituted alkenes. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies were carried out to explore the mechanism and origin of regiodivergent hydroarylation of internal alkynes reported by our group. The results demonstrate that this reaction first proceeds via a bimetallic mechanism to generate the active catalyst that subsequently undergoes a monometallic mechanism to run the three-stage catalytic cycle: alkyne migratory insertion, protonation, and active catalyst regeneration. Alkyne migratory insertion is considered as the regioselectivity-determining step. Energy decomposition analyses on insertion transition states suggest that the interaction between the substrate and catalyst is mainly responsible for the observed exclusive γ-selectivity of 1a, while the deformation of these two sections induced by the sterically hindered phenyl group and aryl group accounts for the complete β-position arylation of 1e. The decrease of γ-selectivity with the regulation of a tertiary alcohol motif in 1a originates from the reduced noncovalent interaction. The computational results provide important insights into the origin of regiodivergent selectivities and useful information for further designing and adjusting the strategy in Mn-catalyzed alkyne hydroarylation.

Hydrogenative Depolymerization of Polyurethanes Catalyzed by a Manganese Pincer Complex

Chemical recycling, in particular hydrogenative depolymerization, offers a promising way to utilize plastic waste. This report covers the manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation of polyurethane materials to the corresponding monomeric units. The key to success is a Mn pincer complex as a potent hydrogenation catalyst in combination with elevated temperatures (up to 200 °C) and appropriate solvents to ensure sufficient solubility of the polymers. A wide range of polyurethane samples of varying polyol and isocyanate compositions, some of which feature significant amounts of urea functionalities, are depolymerized, releasing polyetherols and diaminotoluene (TDA) in yields of up to 89 % and 76 %, respectively.

Mechanistic insights into the selectivity of norcarane oxidation by oxoMn(V) porphyrin complexes

OxoMn(V) porphyrin complexes perform competitive hydroxylation, desaturation, and radical rearrangement reactions using diagnostic substrate norcarane. Initial C-H cleavage proceeds through the two hydrogen abstraction steps from the two adjacent carbon on the norcarane, then the selective reaction is performed to generate various products. Using density functional theory calculations, we show that the hydroxylation and desaturation reactions are triggered by a rate-determining H-abstraction step, whereas the rate-determining step for the radical rearrangement is located at the rebound step ( TS2 ). We find that the  endo- 2  reaction is favorable over other reactions, which is consistent with the experimental result. Furthermore, the competitive pathways for norcarane oxidation depend on the non-covalent interaction between norcarane and porphyrin-ring, and orbital energy gaps between donor and acceptor orbitals because of stable or unstable acceptor orbital. The stereo- and regio-selectivities of norcarane oxidation are hardly sensitive to the zero-point energy and thermal free energy corrections.

Manganese-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes with iPrOH as hydrogen source

The Mn-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes is reported herein, along with Mn-catalyzed hydration of α-keto alkynes. Mechanistic studies displayed an asymmetrical Mn-hydride species performing the catalytic turnover.
