Fast neonicotinoid quantification in honey using the one-point internal calibration approach

Neonicotinoids, a highly effective class of insecticides used worldwide, have been identified as a major cause of concern for biodiversity. To assess the ecological and environmental consequences of neonicotinoids' use, reliable analytical methodologies, including calibration approaches, are needed. Here, we compared the performance of internal calibration (IC) using a single concentration of stable isotope-labeled standard (SIL) with classical multipoint external calibration (EC) for the quantification of six neonicotinoids in honey. IC showed acceptable levels of trueness (86.3% - 116.0%) and precision (1.4% - 20.8%), although slight biases were observed at very low concentrations compared to EC. When applied to 32 original honey samples, both approaches showed strong agreement (R2 > 0.998) with proportional biases lower than 5%. These results highlight the possibility of implementing IC to simplify quantification in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based pesticide applications.

Ecological impacts and management strategies of pesticide pollution on aquatic life and human beings

Pesticide contamination has become a global concern. Pesticides can sorb onto suspended particles and deposit into the sedimentary layers of aquatic environments, resulting in ecosystem degradation, pollution, and diseases. Pesticides impact the behavior of aquatic environments by contaminating organic matter in water, which serves as the primary food source for aquatic food webs. Pesticide residues can increase ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, and sulfate in aquatic systems; thus, threatening ecological environment and human health. Several physical, chemical, and biological methodologies have been implemented to effectively remove pesticide traces from aquatic environments. The present review highlights the potential consequences of pesticide exposure on fish and humans, focusing on the (epi)genetic alterations affecting growth, behavior, and immune system. Mitigation strategies (e.g., bioremediation) to prevent/minimize the detrimental impacts of pesticides are also discussed. This review aims to shed light on the awareness in reducing the risk of water pollution for safe and sustainable pesticide management.

Advancing ecotoxicity assessment: Leveraging pre-trained model for bee toxicity and compound degradability prediction

The prediction of ecological toxicity plays an increasingly important role in modern society. However, the existing models often suffer from poor performance and limited predictive capabilities. In this study, we propose a novel approach for ecological toxicity assessment based on pre-trained models. By leveraging pre-training techniques and graph neural network models, we establish a highperformance predictive model. Furthermore, we incorporate a variational autoencoder to optimize the model, enabling simultaneous discrimination of toxicity to bees and molecular degradability. Additionally, despite the low similarity between the endogenous hormones in bees and the compounds in our dataset, our model confidently predicts that these hormones are non-toxic to bees, which further strengthens the credibility and accuracy of our model. We also discovered the negative correlation between the degradation and bee toxicity of compounds. In summary, this study presents an ecological toxicity assessment model with outstanding performance. The proposed model accurately predicts the toxicity of chemicals to bees and their degradability capabilities, offering valuable technical support to relevant fields.

A versatile yeast model identifies the pesticides cymoxanil and metalaxyl as risk factors for synucleinopathies

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons and the presence of Lewy bodies, which predominantly consist of aggregated forms of the protein alpha-synuclein (aSyn). While these aggregates are a pathological hallmark of PD, the etiology of most cases remains elusive. Although environmental risk factors have been identified, such as the pesticides dieldrin and MTPT, many others remain to be assessed and their molecular impacts are underexplored. This study aimed to identify pesticides that could enhance aSyn aggregation using a humanized yeast model expressing aSyn fused to GFP as a primary screening platform, which we validated using dieldrin. We found that the pesticides cymoxanil and metalaxyl induce aggregation of aSyn in yeast, which we confirmed also occurs in a model of aSyn inclusion formation using human H4 cells. In conclusion, our approach generated invaluable molecular data on the effect of pesticides, therefore providing insights into mechanisms associated with the onset and progression of PD and other synucleinopathies.

Effect of an organophosphate insecticide on the behaviour and physiology of the spider Misumenops maculissparsus (Araneae: Thomisidae)

Pests in agriculture cause significant economic damage by reducing production and product quality. While pesticides can be an alternative for pest control, their use has a significant impact on both the environment and human health. Chlorpyrifos, a widely used pesticide, affects both target and non-target organisms, including spiders. In this study, we investigated whether Misumenops maculissparsus spiders at three developmental stages (J0, J2, and adults) recognize the presence of the insecticide and how it affects their enzymatic activity. The results indicated that only J0 was able to recognize the insecticide and avoided surfaces treated with it. On the other hand, J0 and adults exhibited reduced acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and the activity of antioxidant enzymes was affected by the treatment. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased significantly in J0, catalase (CAT) in all stages, glutathione S-transferase (GST) in J2, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in J2 and adults. Chlorpyrifos exposure did not increase reactive oxygen species or alter cellular populations in any model.

Environmental remediation of emerging contaminants using subcritical water: A review

The continuous rise of emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment has been a growing concern due to their potentially harmful effects on humans, animals, plants, and aquatic life, even at low concentrations. ECs include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, hormones, personal care products, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organic dyes, heavy metals (HMs), and others. The world's growing population contributes to the release of many kinds of chemicals into the environment, which is estimated to be more than 200 billion metric tons annually and results in over 9 million deaths. The removal of these contaminants using conventional physical, chemical, and biological treatments has proven to be ineffective, highlighting the need for simple, effective, inexpesive, practical, and eco-friendly alternatives. Thus, this article discusses the utilization of subcritical water oxidation (SBWO) and subcritical water extraction (SBWE) techniques to remove ECS from the environment. Subcritical water (water below the critical temperature of 374.15 °C and critical pressure of 22.1 Mpa) has emerged as one of the most promising methods for remediation of ECs from the environment due to its non-toxic properties, simplicity and efficiency of application. Furthermore, the impact of temperature, pressure, treatment time, and utilization of chelating agents, organic modifiers, and oxidizing agents in the static and dynamic modes was investigated to establish the best conditions for high ECs removal efficiencies.

Combined effect of light and glyphosate herbicide on growth rate of marine diatom algae

The effect of glyphosate herbicide at concentrations of 25, 100, 150 and 200 μg.L-1 on growth characteristics of diatoms C. caspia and T. weissflogii under accumulative growth conditions was investigated. Increasing herbicide concentration in the medium resulted in growth suppression of both species and decreased the final abundance of the cultures in the stationary growth phase. The calculated concentrations of herbicide EC10 and EC50 (10 and 90 μg.L-1 for C. caspia and 7 and 25 μg·L-1 for T. weissflogii, respectively) led to a 10 and 50% reduction in the abundance of the studied cultures relative to the control, are ecologically significant and correspond to the values recorded in aquatic areas. The combined effect of light (in the range of 20-250 µE.m-2.s-1) and glyphosate (calculated concentrations of EC10 and EC50) on the growth characteristics of microalgae was evaluated. An increase in algal sensitivity to light was observed with glyphosate exposure. In both species, the increase in the concentration of glyphosate in the medium led to a decrease in the initial angle of slope of the light curve of growth under conditions of light limitation, a reduction in the value of light saturation of growth, narrowing of the boundaries of the light optimum and an increase in the degree of light inhibition. It is shown that the effect of the combined action of light and glyphosate exceeds the sum of the effects of each factor. This fact should be taken into account in ecotoxicological monitoring when assessing the risks of glyphosate ingress into aquatic ecosystems. An increase in glyphosate concentration in water during periods with high values of solar insolation is potentially dangerous due to a decrease in the photosynthetic activity of algae and a reduction in diatom algae abundance.

Analytic and In Silico Methods to Understand the Interactions between Dinotefuran and Haemoglobin

This work lies in the growing concern over the potential impacts of pesticides on human health and the environment. Pesticides are extensively used to protect crops and control pests, but their interaction with essential biomolecules like haemoglobin (Hb) remains poorly understood. Spectrofluorometric, electrochemical, and in silico investigations have been chosen as potential methods to delve into this issue, as they offer valuable insights into the molecular-level interactions between pesticides and haemoglobin. The research aims to address the gaps in knowledge and contribute to developing safer and more sustainable pesticide practices. The interaction was studied by spectroscopic techniques (UV-Visible & Fluorescence), in silico studies (molecular docking & molecular dynamics simulations) and electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry and tafel). The studies showed effective binding of dinotefuran with the Hb which will cause toxicity to human. The formation of a stable molecular complex between ofloxacin and Haemoglobin was shown via molecular docking and the binding energy was found to be -5.37 kcal/mol. Further, molecular dynamics simulations provide an insight for the stability of the complex (Hb-dinotefuran) for a span of 250 ns with a binding free energy of -53.627 kJ/mol. Further, cyclic voltammetry and tafel studies show the interaction of dinotefuran with Hb effectively.

Evaluation and implications of organophosphate pesticide residues in cabbage (Brassica oleracea)

The improper application of pesticides in cultivating vegetables has resulted in the buildup of pesticide residues on vegetables. This study evaluated organophosphate pesticide residue levels in cabbage with specific objectives of investigating the varieties of organophosphate pesticides employed by farmers and their awareness, assessing residue levels on cabbage using semi-structured questionnaires, and determining the distribution of pesticide residues within the layers of the cabbage head using 50 cabbage samples randomly collected from farmers from 14 cabbage-producing communities. The findings indicated that 98 % of the farmers applied pesticides in the morning, whereas 24 % preferred evening application. Meanwhile, 22 % applied pesticides twice in a day. Also, 18 % combined pesticides, 40 % applied 20 ml during the application, 72 % chose a particular pesticide based on the expected efficiency, 46 % applied pesticides between 1 and 5 times in a season and 66 % sprayed between 7 and 14 days. Pyrinex 48 EC and Perferthion emerged as the predominant organophosphates, with usage rates of 10 % and 12 % respectively. Also, eleven (11) organophosphate pesticide residues were identified in the cabbage samples. Profenofos and chlorpyrifos exhibited the highest concentrations of pesticide residues, with levels reaching 0.02 mg/kg, with 56.6 % of the samples containing chlorpyrifos pesticide residue. Nevertheless, all the identified pesticide residues did not exceed the maximum residue limits for cabbage. The study analysis disclosed the presence of various organophosphate pesticide residues in the first 10 layers of cabbage. However, it was noted that the innermost layers might not contain any detectable pesticide residues. The findings highlight the need for farmers to use pesticides judiciously and follow recommended application practices to minimize vegetable residues.

Pesticide water pollution, human health risks, and regulatory evaluation: A nationwide analysis in Ethiopia

Despite the growing concerns about pesticide pollution, a comprehensive global understanding continues to be hampered by a lack of data from less developed countries. Ethiopia, being a typical agricultural country, is one of the top consumers of pesticides in sub-Saharan Africa. This study conducted a nationwide analysis to assess pesticide water pollution and human health risks in Ethiopia based on the available data. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of the Pesticide Risks in the Tropics for Man, Environment, and Trade (PRIMET) model, which is currently used for pesticide regulatory risk assessment in Ethiopia. The scoring approach was employed to map the site-specific pollution status based on clearly defined individual pesticide concentrations, excluding mixtures (n = 99). The pollution scores varied significantly among sites, with higher scores observed in the Rift Valley region. Acute and chronic health risks were identified for some commonly detected pesticides at their maximum concentrations. Epidemiological studies conducted in Ethiopia also demonstrated that pesticide exposure is associated with acute poisoning, respiratory health problems, neurobehavioral symptoms, and breast cancer. Furthermore, the study found that the existing regulatory framework likely underestimates pesticide risks in 35 % of the cases, raising concerns about the reliability of the PRIMET model in its current version. Overall, the results emphasize the need for increased attention to pesticide regulation and management in Ethiopia and other countries with similar scenarios, including regular monitoring, implementation of residue limits, post-application evaluations, and recalibration of the PRIMET model. This study provides valuable scientific information and insights into pesticide pollution and can serve as a baseline for ensuring agricultural and environmental sustainability.

Dual-Mode Fluorescent/Intelligent Lateral Flow Immunoassay Based on Machine Learning Algorithm for Ultrasensitive Analysis of Chloroacetamide Herbicides

Given the harmful effect of pesticide residues, it is essential to develop portable and accurate biosensors for the analysis of pesticides in agricultural products. In this paper, we demonstrated a dual-mode fluorescent/intelligent (DM-f/DM-i) lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for chloroacetamide herbicides, which utilized horseradish peroxidase-IgG conjugated time-resolved fluorescent nanoparticle probes as both a signal label and amplification tool. With the newly developed LFIA in the DM-f mode, the limits of detection (LODs) were 0.08 ng/mL of acetochlor, 0.29 ng/mL of metolachlor, 0.51 ng/mL of Propisochlor, and 0.13 ng/mL of their mixture. In the DM-i mode, machine learning (ML) algorithms were used for image segmentation, feature extraction, and correlation analysis to obtain multivariate fitted equations, which had high reliability in the regression model with R2 of 0.95 in the range of 2 × 102-2 × 105 pg/mL. Importantly, the practical applicability was successfully validated by determining chloroacetamide herbicides in the corn sample with good recovery rates (85.4 to 109.3%) that correlate well with the regression model. The newly developed dual-mode LFIA with reduced detection time (12 min) holds great potential for pesticide monitoring in equipment-limited environments using a portable test strip reader and laboratory conditions using ML algorithms.

Hydroponics with Microalgae and Cyanobacteria: Emerging Trends and Opportunities in Modern Agriculture

The global population is expected to reach 9.5 billion, which means that crop productivity needs to double to meet the growing population's food demand. Soil degradation and environmental factors, such as climate events, significantly threaten crop production and global food security. Furthermore, rapid urbanization has led to 55% of the world's population migrating to cities, and this proportion is expected to increase to 75% by 2050, which presents significant challenges in producing staple foods through conventional hinterland farming. Numerous studies have proposed various sustainable farming techniques to combat the shortage of farmable land and increase food security in urban areas. Soilless farming techniques such as hydroponics have gained worldwide popularity due to their resource efficiency and production of superior-quality fresh products. However, using chemical nutrients in a conventional hydroponic system can have significant environmental impacts, including eutrophication and resource depletion. Incorporating microalgae into hydroponic systems as biostimulants offers a sustainable and ecofriendly approach toward circular bioeconomy strategies. The present review summarizes the plant growth-promoting activity of microalgae as biostimulants and their mechanisms of action. We discuss their effects on plant growth parameters under different applications, emphasizing the significance of integrating microalgae into a closed-loop circular economy model to sustainably meet global food demands.

Towards solving the reproducibility crisis in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-based pesticide detection

Growing concerns about pesticide residues in agriculture are pushing the scientific community to develop innovative and efficient methods for detecting these substances at low concentrations down to the molecular level. In this context, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical method that has so far already undergone some validation for its effectiveness in pesticide detection. However, despite its great potential, SERS faces significant difficulties obtaining reproducible and accurate pesticide spectra, particularly for some of the most widely used pesticides, such as malathion, chlorpyrifos, and imidacloprid. Those inconsistencies can be attributed to several factors, such as interactions between pesticides and SERS substrates and the variety of substrates and solvents used. In addition, differences in the equipment used to obtain SERS spectra and the lack of standards for control experiments further complicate the reproducibility and reliability of SERS data. This review systematically discusses the problems mentioned above, including a comprehensive analysis of the challenges in precisely evaluating SERS spectra for pesticide detection. We not only point out the existing limitations of the method, which can be traced in previous review works, but also offer practical recommendations to improve the quality and comparability of SERS spectra, thereby expanding the potential applications of the method in such an essential field as pesticide detection.

Crop grey water footprints in China: The impact of pesticides on water pollution

Agricultural water pollution is a significant challenge in China, a rapidly growing economy with a large agricultural sector. The grey water footprint (WF) is a tool for evaluating freshwater pollution. It expresses pollution in volumetric units identifying the pollutant that theoretically needs most water to be diluted to accepted water quality standards. Previous agricultural grey WF studies focused on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), some studies included pesticides. This study assesses grey WFs based on N, P and 1513 pesticide combinations for twelve main crops and two crop categories in 31 Chinese provinces. Grey WFs, including the pesticide component, are far larger than estimated before, dominating total agricultural WFs (green, blue, and grey). The total grey WF of Chinese agriculture (4,900 109 m3 year-1) is determined by pesticides, while grey WFs related to N and P are 450 and 1,500 109 m3 year-1, differences of a factor of eleven and three respectively. The provinces Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong are hotspots contributing 37 % to the total grey WF. A limited number of pesticides used for maize, vegetables, fruits and potato (Mancozeb a fungicide, Acetochlor a herbicide and Cypermethrin an insecticide) dominate total grey WFs, contributing 80 % to the total grey WF. Eliminating the most polluting pesticides per category and redistributing the remaining ones with a similar function but lower grey WFs reduces national water pollution from agriculture by 64 %. Only five crops, i.e. maize, potato, soybean, rice and wheat, and the two crop categories, vegetables and fruits, contribute 94 % to this reduction. Probably grey WFs could reduce even further with a second elimination and redistribution effort. This study is the first national grey WF assessment related to pesticides in agriculture. It offers valuable insights to farmers and policymakers to enhance water quality in China and beyond.

Fluoride in groundwater sources in Ghana: A multifaceted and country-wide review

A large portion of Ghana's population, particularly in rural areas, lack reliable access to safely managed water. Many of these communities rely on groundwater as their primary drinking water source. Distinguished by its thorough examination of F- occurrences in Ghana, this study complements previous studies by meticulously analyzing groundwater-soil and -plant dynamics, global implications, and region-specific insights, notably in the high-risk Bongo area. The study showed that Fluoride contamination in Ghana is evident in various regions, with primary data showcasing concentrations ranging from 0.05 mg/L-1 to 13.29 mg/L-1. The Bongo District in the north exhibits elevated fluoride levels, surpassing WHO safety limits of 1.5 mg/L-1 [62]. Additional studies in Sekyere South and Nalerigu disclose concentrations from 0.3 mg/L-1 to 4.0 mg/L-1 and 0.35 mg/L-1 to 3.95 mg/L-1, respectively. Contamination probabilities range from 50 % to 90 % in the north and northeast. While southern areas lack extensive data, the identified hotspots necessitate further investigation. Geological factors significantly influence fluoride levels, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive monitoring, mitigation, and public awareness. The identified contamination poses risks to public health, urging immediate action for sustainable solutions and ensuring safe drinking water in affected regions. The health implications of fluoride toxicity on the residents of regions prone to fluoride exposure are noteworthy. As a result, an inevitable surge in instances of dental and skeletal fluorosis can be anticipated. Notwithstanding the challenges, research indicates optimistic prospects for mitigating fluoride pollution in drinking water. Techniques like the utilization of "Bone Charcoal" and the "Contact Precipitation" approach offer promise for remediation. These methods can be implemented at a household level and some are economically viable, making them advisable for adoption in fluoride-prone areas of Ghana.

Exploring the Use of a Lipopeptide in Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine Monolayers for Enhanced Detection of Glyphosate in Aqueous Environments

The growing reliance on pesticides for pest management in agriculture highlights the need for new analytical methods to detect these substances in food and water. Our research introduces a SPRWG-(C18H37) lipopeptide (LP) as a functional analog of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) for glyphosate detection in environmental samples using phosphatidylcholine (PC) monolayers. This LP, containing hydrophilic amino acids linked to an 18-carbon aliphatic chain, alters lipid assembly properties, leading to a more flexible system. Changes included reduced molecular area and peak pressure in Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses provided insights into the LP's structural organization within the membrane and its interaction with glyphosate (PNG). Structural and geometric parameters, as derived from in silico molecular dynamics simulations (MD), substantiated the impact of LP on the monolayer structure and the interaction with PNG. Notably, the presence of the LP and glyphosate increased charge transfer resistance, indicating strong adherence of the monolayer to the indium tin oxide (ITO) surface and effective pesticide interaction. A calibration curve for glyphosate concentration adjustment revealed a detection limit (LOD) of 24 nmol L-1, showcasing the high sensitivity of this electrochemical biosensor. This LOD is significantly lower than that of a similar colorimetric biosensor in aqueous media with a detection limit of approximately 0.3 μmol L-1. Such an improvement in sensitivity likely stems from adding a polar residue to the amino acid chain of the LP.

Bruceine D inhibits the growth of Spodoptera litura by inducing cell apoptosis in the midgut via an oxidative burst

BACKGROUND

Spodoptera litura is one of the most harmful lepidoptera pests in China, and is difficult to control due to its strong resistance to the current frequently used insecticide species. The requirement to develop pesticides with novel toxicology mechanisms to control S. litura is urgent. The quassinoid of bruceine D display outstanding systemic properties and strong insecticidal activity against S. litura, which possess notable application potential for integrative management of S. litura, but the mechanism of toxicity remains unclear.

RESULTS

In this study, we found that bruceine D exerts potent growth inhibitory activity against S. litura, disrupting the ecdysone and juvenile hormone titers, and causing long-term adverse effects. Association analysis between transcriptomics and metabolomics suggested that bruceine D affected the digestion and absorption capacity of S. litura larvae by inducing a strong oxidative stress response and cell apoptosis in the intestine. Further analysis demonstrated that bruceine D can inhibit the activities of digestive and antioxidant enzymes and induce malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) overaccumulation in the midgut. Moreover, the protein level of Bax, cleavage caspase 3, and cytochrome c expressed in cytoplasm (cyto) were up-regulated by bruceine D, while Bcl-2 and cytochrome c expressed in mitochondria (mito) were down-regulated. In addition, there was a noticeable increase in caspase-3 protease activity. Histopathological observations revealed that bruceine D damages the structure of midgut epithelial cells and activates lysosomes, which subsequently disrupts the midgut tissue.

CONCLUSION

Overall, our findings suggested that bruceine D induced excessive ROS accumulation in midgut epithelial cells. The resulting cell apoptosis disrupted midgut tissue, leading ultimately to reduced nutrient digestion and absorption in the midgut and the inhibition of larval growth. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Spherical fluorinated covalent organic polymer for highly efficient and selective extraction of fipronil and its metabolites in soil

Covalent organic polymers (COPs) have garnered considerable attention as promising adsorbents of online solid phase extraction (online SPE). Morphology modulation provides an appealing solution to enhance adsorption efficiency and reduce back-pressure in the absorbent. However, the synthesis of COPs with regular geometric shapes and specific adsorption selectivity remains challenging. In this study, a uniform spherical fluorinated COP (F-sCOP, average diameter: 2.14 μm) was successfully synthesized by Schiff base reaction of 1,3,5-triformylphoroglucinol (TP) and 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB). The F-sCOP had a large surface area (BET: 346.2 m2 g-1), remarkable enrichment capacity (enrichment factors: 186-782), high selectivity toward fipronil and its metabolites (adsorption efficiency >93.1%), and admirable service life (>60 times). Based on the adsorbent, a novel μ-matrix cartridge extraction-online-μ-solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (μ-MCE-online-μ-SPE-HPLC-MS) method was constructed and used to track trace fipronil and its metabolites in soil. The proposed method exhibited a wide linear range (0.05-1000 ng g-1), low quantitation limits (LOQs: 0.0027-0.011 ng g-1), high recoveries (90.1-119.6%) and good repeatability (RSD ≤10.5%, n = 3) for fipronil analysis. This study paves the way for pesticide analysis in soil risk assessment.

Assessing the effects of a commercial fungicide and an herbicide, alone and in combination, on Apis mellifera: Insights from biomarkers and cognitive analysis

Agrochemicals play a vital role in protecting crops and enhancing agricultural production by reducing threats from pests, pathogens and weeds. The toxicological status of honey bees can be influenced by a number of factors, including pesticides. While extensive research has focused on the lethal and sublethal effects of insecticides on individual bees and colonies, it is important to recognise that fungicides and herbicides can also affect bees' health. Unfortunately, in the field, honey bees are exposed to mixtures of compounds rather than single substances. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a commercial fungicide and a commercial herbicide, both individually and in combination, on honey bees. Mortality assays, biomarkers and learning and memory tests were performed, and the results were integrated to assess the toxicological status of honey bees. Neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase and carboxylesterase activities), detoxification and metabolic processes (glutathione S-transferase and alkaline phosphatase activities), immune system function (lysozyme activity and haemocytes count) and genotoxicity biomarkers (Nuclear Abnormalities assay) were assessed. The fungicide Sakura® was found to activate detoxification enzymes and affect alkaline phosphatase activity. The herbicide Elegant 2FD and the combination of both pesticides showed neurotoxic effects and induced detoxification processes. Exposure to the herbicide/fungicide mixture impaired learning and memory in honey bees. This study represents a significant advance in understanding the toxicological effects of commonly used commercial pesticides in agriculture and contributes to the development of effective strategies to mitigate their adverse effects on non-target insects.

Review on emerging applications of nanobiosensor in food safety

Nanosensors have become an indispensable tool in the food sector due to their specificity and sensitivity. The biosensor consists of a transducer coupled with a biorecognition component to transform biological signal into digital signal. Nanobiosensors have been widely used for sensing toxic chemicals such as pesticide residues and pathogenic microbes owing to their accurate sensitivity in an affordable manner, which gives more hope to the food industry on their applications. It employs nanocarriers to bind to impurities and pollutants, as well as food-borne microorganisms and their resulting toxins, such as mycotoxins. This modern technology ensures food safety in food processing industries. Nowadays, nanoparticle-immobilized sensors act as spot indicators to improve smart food packing technology. Certain types of nanobiosensors are deployed to monitor food product manufacture till packaging and to check the freshness of the product till spoilage identification. They are mainly using enzyme catalysts, which are highly sensitive to extreme environmental conditions. As a result, there is a greater evaluation requirement in nanosensor technology to adopt any temperature, pH, or other difficult parameters. Its stability, while in contact with food substrates, is another criterion that needs to be regularized. Within this framework, this review delves into the latest developments in nanobiosensors and the obstacles encountered during their use across different food industries.

Green production of apples delivers environmental and economic benefits in China

Sustainable alternative farming systems are gaining popularity worldwide because of the negative effects of conventional agriculture on global climate change and the environmental degradation caused by intensive use of synthetic inputs. The green farming system in China is an integrated production strategy that focuses on reducing chemical fertilizer use while increasing organic manure inputs. Despite their rapid growth as more sustainable systems over the past decades, green farming systems have not been systematically evaluated to date. We used apple production as a representative case to assess the sustainability of green farming systems. Across major apple-producing regions in China, green farming reduced the application of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) by 46.8% (from 412 to 219 kg ha-1) and increased that of manure N by 33.1% (from 171 to 227 kg ha-1) on average compared with conventional systems enhancing N use efficiency by 7.27-20.27% and reducing N losses by 8.92%-11.56%. It also slightly lowered yield by 4.34%-13.8% in four provinces. Soil fertility was improved in green orchards through increases in soil organic matter, total N, and available major nutrients. Our cradle-to-farm-gate life-cycle assessment revealed that green farming helped to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 12.6%, potentially contributing to a reduction of 165 239 t CO2 eq annually in major apple-producing areas. In addition, green farming achieved 39.3% higher profitability ($7180 ha-1 year-1) at the farmer level. Our study demonstrates the potential of green production of apples for the development of sustainable agriculture in China. These findings advance our understanding of sustainable alternative farming systems and offer perspectives for the sustainable development of global agriculture.

Quantum Simulations and Experimental Insights into Glyphosate Adsorption Using Graphene-Based Nanomaterials

The increasing global demand for food and agrarian development brings to light a dual issue concerning the use of substances that are crucial for increasing productivity yet can be harmful to human health and the environment when misused. Herein, we combine insights from high-level quantum simulations and experimental findings to elucidate the fundamental physicochemical mechanisms behind developing graphene-based nanomaterials for the adsorption of emerging contaminants, with a specific focus on pesticide glyphosate (GLY). We conducted a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of graphene-based supports as promising candidates for detecting, sensing, capturing, and removing GLY applications. By combining ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations, we explored several chemical environments encountered by GLY during its interaction with graphene-based substrates, including pristine and punctual defect regions. Our results unveiled distinct interaction behaviors: physisorption in pristine and doped graphene regions, chemisorption leading to molecular dissociation in vacancy-type defect regions, and complex transformations involving the capture of N and O atoms from impurity-adsorbed graphene, resulting in the formation of new GLY-derived compounds. The theoretical findings were substantiated by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, which proposed a mechanism explaining GLY adsorption in graphene-based nanomaterials. The comprehensive evaluation of adsorption energies and associated properties provides valuable insights into the intricate nature of these interactions, shedding light on potential applications and guiding future experimental investigations of graphene-based nanofilters for water decontamination.

Comprehensive Review of Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin A Dynamics: Emergence, Toxicological Impact, and Advanced Control Strategies

Filamentous fungi exhibit remarkable adaptability to diverse substrates and can synthesize a plethora of secondary metabolites. These metabolites, produced in response to environmental stimuli, not only confer selective advantages but also encompass potentially deleterious mycotoxins. Mycotoxins, exemplified by those originating from Alternaria, Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium species, represent challenging hazards to both human and animal health, thus warranting stringent regulatory control. Despite regulatory frameworks, mycotoxin contamination remains a pressing global challenge, particularly within cereal-based matrices and their derived by-products, integral components of animal diets. Strategies aimed at mitigating mycotoxin contamination encompass multifaceted approaches, including biological control modalities, detoxification procedures, and innovative interventions like essential oils. However, hurdles persist, underscoring the imperative for innovative interventions. This review elucidated the prevalence, health ramifications, regulatory paradigms, and evolving preventive strategies about two prominent mycotoxins, aflatoxins and ochratoxin A. Furthermore, it explored the emergence of new fungal species, and biocontrol methods using lactic acid bacteria and essential mustard oil, emphasizing their efficacy in mitigating fungal spoilage and mycotoxin production. Through an integrative examination of these facets, this review endeavored to furnish a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted challenges posed by mycotoxin contamination and the emergent strategies poised to ameliorate its impact on food and feed safety.

Cascading social-ecological benefits of biodiversity for agriculture

Cultivated species diversity can provide numerous benefits to agricultural systems. Many ecological theories have been proposed to understand the relationships between plant species diversity and trophic interactions. However, extending such theories to socioeconomic systems has been rare for agriculture. Here, we establish ten hypotheses (e.g., the natural enemy hypothesis, resource concentration hypothesis, insurance hypothesis, and aggregation hypothesis) about the relationships between cultivated species diversity (i.e., crop diversification, co-cultures of crops and domestic animals, and co-cultures of crops and edible fungi) and trophic cascades of crops, invertebrate herbivores and natural enemies in cropping systems. We then explore the socioeconomic advantages (e.g., yield, economic and environmental performance) of these trophic cascades. Finally, we propose a multi-perspective framework to promote the cascading social-ecological benefits of species diversity for agricultural sustainability. Integrating the benefits of trophic cascades into agricultural socioeconomic systems requires policies and legislation that support multi-species co-culture practices and the willingness of consumers to pay for these practices through higher prices for agricultural products.

Sustainable approach for the expulsion of metaldehyde: risk, interactions, and mitigation: a review

All pests can be eliminated with the help of pesticides, which can be either natural or synthetic. Because of the excessive use of pesticides, it is harmful to both ecology and people's health. Pesticides are categorised according to several criteria: their chemical composition, method of action, effects, timing of use, source of manufacture, and formulations. Many aquatic animals, birds, and critters live in danger owing to hazardous pesticides. Metaldehyde is available in various forms and causes significant impact even when small amounts are ingested. Metaldehyde can harm wildlife, including dogs, cats, and birds. This review discusses pesticides, their types and potential environmental issues, and metaldehyde's long-term effects. In addition, it examines ways to eliminate metaldehyde from the aquatic ecosystem before concluding by anticipating how pesticides may affect society. The metal-organic framework and other biosorbents have been appropriately synthesized and subsequently represent the amazing removal of pesticides from effluent as an enhanced adsorbent, such as magnetic nano adsorbents. A revision of the risk assessment for metaldehyde residuals in aqueous sources is also attempted.

"I Do Not Have the Time of Being sick": Para-Occupational Exposure and Women's Health Risk Perception in an Agricultural Community

INTRODUCTION

Few studies have explored the relationship between para-occupational exposure and risk perception in farmers' families. Women are indirectly involved in agricultural activities, even though their roles most of the time are hidden. Women's para-occupational exposure and risk perceptions are important to describe, since women have a key gender role in the family's health care and possibly in the impact of acting regarding pesticide safety education. Furthermore, in farmer families, the impact of para-occupational pesticide exposure on women's health has been neglected.

AIM

Analyze pesticide para-occupational exposure scenario, knowledge, and health risk perception among women living in a farmer community.

METHODS

A mixed methodology was used. Two groups of women were identified to screen the exposure scenario: Women living in a farming family and women not living in a farming family. Data on para-occupational pesticide exposure and intradomicile practices were collected by questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to identify health risk perception and risk practices.

RESULTS

We observed a complex pesticide exposure scenario. All women were potentially exposed to pesticides through several pathways. One-third of the participants lived near a farming family or in proximity to neighbors that used pesticides at home, and one of every three women referred to spending time in a farmer's home. Among the group of women in a farming family (n = 18) stored pesticides inside the home was common; having the "safety practice" of storing pesticides in high places to avoid children being exposed. Women not living in farmimg families (n = 11) felt overexposed due to living in an agricultural community and agricultural drift exposure. Women from this group also mentioned feeling fear of developing cancerous diseases as well as fertility problems.

CONCLUSIONS

Knowledge and risk perception of pesticide exposure are similar between groups; however, women living in farming families were less willing to attend preventive health check-ups or educational programs than women not living in a farming family.

A shift towards softer pest management differently benefits earwig and spider communities in a multiyear experiment in apple orchards

BACKGROUND

Environmentally-friendly crop protection practices are needed to enhance the sustainability of current agricultural systems. This is crucial in orchards which are extensively treated to impair various pests, at the expense of natural enemies. However, the effect of a shift towards softer pest management on the beneficial arthropod community is poorly documented. Earwigs (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) and spiders (Araneae) are relevant groups to assess such effects because they are highly sensitive to agricultural practices. They were monitored for 6 and 4 years, respectively, in apple orchards under three pest management regimes: Organic, Low-input and Conventional, with pest management being switched during the survey from a broad-spectrum insecticide schedule to mating disruption in the latter one, and more selective compounds in all orchards.

RESULTS

The survey displayed that earwig abundance (mainly Forficula auricularia) that was initially very low in the Conventional orchard (annual mean 0.5-1.7 earwigs per shelter in the 2010-2012 period) increased to the same level as that of Low-input and Organic orchards (over 10 earwigs per shelter) in the same year that changes in pest management occurred. The epigeal and arboreal spider communities were not responsive, and no recovering was observed 4 years after change in practices.

CONCLUSION

Predatory arthropod communities are differently affected over time by changes in pest management, most probably due to their biology (dispersion, reproduction rate, susceptibility to pesticides etc.). This outlines the importance of documenting the time required to recover after perturbations and build a natural enemy community to enhance pest control in a win-win perspective. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Sensitive fluorescence detection of glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium pesticides by purine-hydrazone-Cu2+ complex

Organophosphorus pesticides play an important role as broad-spectrum inactivating herbicides in agriculture. Developing a method for rapid and efficient organophosphorus pesticides detection is still urgent due to the increasing concern on food safety. An organo-probe (ZDA), synthesized by purine hydrazone derivative and 2,2'-dipyridylamine derivative, was applied in sensitive recognition of Cu2+ with detection limit of 300 nM. Mechanism study via density functional theory (DFT) and job's plot experiment revealed that ZDA and Cu2+ ions form a 1:2 complex quenching the fluorescence emission. Moreover, this fluorescent complex ZDA-Cu2+ was applicable for detecting glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium following fluorescence enhancement mechanism, with detection limits of 11.26 nM and 11.5 nM, respectively. Meanwhile, ZDA-Cu2+ was effective and sensitive when it is used for pesticide detection, reaching the maximum value and stabilizing in 1 min. Finally, the ZDA-Cu2+ probe could also be tolerated in cell assay environment, implying potential bio-application.

A review of biomolecules conjugated lanthanide up-conversion nanoparticles-based fluorescence probes in food safety and quality monitoring applications

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are known to possess unique characteristics, which allow them to overcome a number of issues that plague traditional fluorescence probes. UCNPs have been employed in a variety of applications, but it is arguably in the realm of optical sensors where they have shown the most promise. Biomolecule conjugated UCNPs-based fluorescence probes have been developed to detect and quantify a wide range of analytes, from metal ions to biomolecules, with great specificity and sensitivity. In this review, we have given much emphasis on the recent trends and progress in the preparation strategies of bioconjugated UCNPs and their potential application as fluorescence sensors in the trace level detection of food industry-based toxicants and adulterants. The paper discusses the preparation and functionalisation strategies of commonly used biomolecules over the surface of UCNPs. The use of different sensing strategies namely heterogenous and homogenous assays, underlying fluorescence mechanisms in the detection process of food adulterants are summarized in detail. This review might set a precedent for future multidisciplinary research including the development of novel biomolecules conjugated UCNPs for potential applications in food science and technology.

Residents' preferences for urban agriculture in Shanghai

Although urban agriculture (UA) has been gaining greater attention as part of an effort toward sustainable urban development in China, empirical knowledge is limited. We conducted a discrete choice experiment with 756 residents of Shanghai. Overall, the results indicate that respondents supported UA as they tended to favor one of the UA scenarios presented. Residents prefer UA facilities that utilize environmentally friendly production, offer farming activities, and are equipped with dining facilities. Regularly scheduled educational activities hosted by UA facilities are preferred to those on an irregular basis. In terms of location, residents prefer UA facilities that are close by but do not necessarily want UA facilities to be right in front of them. There is a stronger preference for UA among highly educated populations, those with primary and secondary school students, and those with agricultural work experience. Additionally, various UA attributes affect residents' preferences; overall, there is a high degree of homogeneity in residents' preferences for various UA attributes. The marginal willingness to pay value is slightly higher than expected among the estimation results. There are three reasons for this outcome: the characteristics of UA as a recreational facility in China, the relatively high price level in Shanghai, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Construction and Application of Nanozyme Sensor Arrays

Compared with traditional "lock-key mode" biosensors, a sensor array consists of a series of sensing elements based on intermolecular interactions (typically hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic interactions). At the same time, sensor arrays also have the advantages of fast response, high sensitivity, low energy consumption, low cost, rich output signals, and imageability, which have attracted widespread attention from researchers. Nanozymes are nanomaterials which own enzyme-like properties. Because of the adjustable activity, high stability, and cost effectiveness of nanozymes, they are potential candidates for construction of sensor arrays to output different signals from analytes through the chemoresponse of colorants, which solves the shortcomings of traditional sensors that they cannot support multiple detection and lack universality. Recently, a sensor array based on nanozymes as nonspecific recognition receptors has attracted much more attention from researchers and has been applied to precise recognition of proteins, bacteria, and heavy metals. In this perspective, attention is given to nanozymes and the regulation of their enzyme-like activity. Particularly, the building principles and methods for sensor arrays based on nanozymes are analyzed, and the applications are summarized. Finally, the approaches to overcome the challenges and perspectives are also presented and analyzed for facilitating further research and development of nanozyme sensor arrays. This perspective should be helpful for gaining insight into research ideas within the field of nanozyme sensor arrays.

Exploring the Interplay of Food Security, Safety, and Psychological Wellness in the COVID-19 Era: Managing Strategies for Resilience and Adaptation

The global population surge presents a dual challenge and opportunity in the realms of food consumption, safety, and mental well-being. This necessitates a projected 70% increase in food production to meet growing demands. Amid this backdrop, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates these issues, underscoring the need for a deeper understanding of the intricate interplay between food consumption patterns and mental health dynamics during this crisis. Mitigating the spread of COVID-19 hinges upon rigorous adherence to personal hygiene practices and heightened disease awareness. Furthermore, maintaining stringent food quality and safety standards across both public and private sectors is imperative for safeguarding public health and containing viral transmission. Drawing upon existing research, this study delves into the pandemic's impact on mental health, food consumption habits, and food safety protocols. Through a comprehensive analysis, it aims to elucidate the nuanced relationship among food, food safety, and mental well-being amid the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting synergistic effects and dynamics that underpin holistic human welfare. Our study offers a novel approach by integrating psychological wellness with food security and safety. In conceiving this review, we aimed to comprehensively explore the intricate interplay among food security, safety, and psychological wellness amid the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our review is structured to encompass a thorough examination of existing research, synthesizing insights into the multifaceted relationships among food consumption patterns, mental health dynamics, and food safety protocols during the crisis. Our findings provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for enhancing food security and psychological well-being, thus supporting both academic research and real-world applications in crisis management and policy development.

Revisiting the Role of Sensors for Shaping Plant Research: Applications and Future Perspectives

Plant health monitoring is essential for understanding the impact of environmental stressors (biotic and abiotic) on crop production, and for tailoring plant developmental and adaptive responses accordingly. Plants are constantly exposed to different stressors like pathogens and soil pollutants (heavy metals and pesticides) which pose a serious threat to their survival and to human health. Plants have the ability to respond to environmental stressors by undergoing rapid transcriptional, translational, and metabolic reprogramming at different cellular compartments in order to balance growth and adaptive responses. However, plants' exceptional responsiveness to environmental cues is highly complex, which is driven by diverse signaling molecules such as calcium Ca2+, reactive oxygen species (ROS), hormones, small peptides and metabolites. Additionally, other factors like pH also influence these responses. The regulation and occurrence of these plant signaling molecules are often undetectable, necessitating nondestructive, live research approaches to understand their molecular complexity and functional traits during growth and stress conditions. With the advent of sensors, in vivo and in vitro understanding of some of these processes associated with plant physiology, signaling, metabolism, and development has provided a novel platform not only for decoding the biochemical complexity of signaling pathways but also for targeted engineering to improve diverse plant traits. The application of sensors in detecting pathogens and soil pollutants like heavy metal and pesticides plays a key role in protecting plant and human health. In this review, we provide an update on sensors used in plant biology for the detection of diverse signaling molecules and their functional attributes. We also discuss different types of sensors (biosensors and nanosensors) used in agriculture for detecting pesticides, pathogens and pollutants.

P450 gene CYP6a13 is responsible for cross-resistance of insecticides in field populations of Spodoptera frugiperda

Continuous and long-term use of traditional and new pesticides can result in cross-resistance among pest populations in different fields. Study on the mechanism of cross-resistance and related genes will help resistance management and field pest control. In this study, the pesticide-resistance mechanism in Spodoptera frugiperda (FAW) was studied with field populations in 3 locations of South China. Field FAW populations were highly resistant to traditional insecticides, chlorpyrifos (organophosphate) and deltamethrin (pyrethroid), and had higher levels of cytochrome P450 activity than a non-resistant laboratory strain. Inhibition of P450 activity by piperonyl butoxide significantly increased the sensitivity of resistant FAW in 3 locations to chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin and chlorantraniliprole (amide), a new type of insecticide, suggesting that P450 detoxification is a critical factor for insecticide resistance in field FAW populations. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that 18 P450 genes were upregulated in the field FAW populations collected in 3 regions and in 2 consecutive years, with CYP6a13, the most significantly upregulated one. Knockdown of CYP6a13 messenger RNA by RNA interference resulted in an increased sensitivity to the 3 tested insecticides in the field FAW. Enzyme activity and molecular docking analyses indicated that CYP6a13 enzyme was able to metabolize the 3 tested insecticides and interact with 8 other types of insecticides, confirming that CYP6a13 is a key cross-resistance gene with a wide range of substrates in the field FAW populations across the different regions and can be used as a biomarker and target for management of FAW insecticide resistance in fields.

From Pipeline to Plant Protection Products: Using New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in Agrochemical Safety Assessment

The human population will be approximately 9.7 billion by 2050, and food security has been identified as one of the key issues facing the global population. Agrochemicals are an important tool available to farmers that enable high crop yields and continued access to healthy foods, but the average new agrochemical active ingredient takes more than ten years, 350 million dollars, and 20,000 animals to develop and register. The time, monetary, and animal costs incentivize the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in early-stage screening to prioritize chemical candidates. This review outlines NAMs that are currently available or can be adapted for use in early-stage screening agrochemical programs. It covers new in vitro screens that are on the horizon in key areas of regulatory concern. Overall, early-stage screening with NAMs enables the prioritization of development for agrochemicals without human and environmental health concerns through a more directed, agile, and iterative development program before animal-based regulatory testing is even considered.

How to deal with xenobiotic compounds through environment friendly approach?

Every year, a huge amount of lethal compounds, such as synthetic dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hydrocarbons, etc. are mass produced worldwide, which negatively affect soil, air, and water quality. At present, pesticides are used very frequently to meet the requirements of modernized agriculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that food production will increase by 80% by 2050 to keep up with the growing population, consequently pesticides will continue to play a role in agriculture. However, improper handling of these highly persistent chemicals leads to pollution of the environment and accumulation in food chain. These effects necessitate the development of technologies to eliminate or degrade these pollutants. Degradation of these compounds by physical and chemical processes is expensive and usually results in secondary compounds with higher toxicity. The biological strategies proposed for the degradation of these compounds are both cost-effective and eco-friendly. Microbes play an imperative role in the degradation of xenobiotic compounds that have toxic effects on the environment. This review on the fate of xenobiotic compounds in the environment presents cutting-edge insights and novel contributions in different fields. Microbial community dynamics in water bodies, genetic modification for enhanced pesticide degradation and the use of fungi for pharmaceutical removal, white-rot fungi's versatile ligninolytic enzymes and biodegradation potential are highlighted. Here we emphasize the factors influencing bioremediation, such as microbial interactions and carbon catabolism repression, along with a nuanced view of challenges and limitations. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive perspective on the bioremediation strategies.

Validation of a modified QuEChERS method for the quantification of residues of currently used pesticides in Cuban agricultural soils, using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

We present an analytical method to detect and quantify residues of currently used pesticides (CUPs), which include 31 active ingredients (ai) and seven transformation products (TPs) in tropical and agricultural soils of Cuba. Ten isotopically labeled analogous compounds served as internal standards (IL-IS). The novelty of this research is the inclusion of different tropical soils type scarcely studied for CUPs and TPs, based on the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) method, followed by chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. All figures of merit proved to be satisfactory according to SANTE guidelines 2020 and 2021. Matrix effects (ME) calculated by the external standard method were significant (|ME| > 20% for almost all compounds; grand mean ± standard deviation (STD) 104 ± 108%) in all soils. The internal standard method compensated ME to non-significant levels (8 ± 50%), even for analytes with a non-structure identical IL-IS (STD, 13 ± 57%). Repeatability (relative standard deviation, RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDR) for skeletic regosol (SR) were 7.5 ± 2.8% and 11.7 ± 4.7%, respectively. Absolute (quantified for 11 analytes with structure identical IL-IS) and relative recovery from SR was 92 ± 13% (mean ± STD) and 90 ± 12%, respectively. Limits of quantification for SR ranged from 0.1 to 10 ng/g, except metalaxyl and oxyfluorfen (25 ng/g each). Linearity of matrix-matched (MM) calibration curves (5 to 100 ng/g) had an R2 of ≥ 0.99 for all soils and almost all analytes. The method was successfully applied to 30 real soil samples.

Thermal sensitivity of Rhinella arenarum tadpole at low concentrations of dimethoate pesticides

One of the main causes of contamination of aquatic environments, which affects biotic communities, is the use of pesticides in agricultural regions. Amphibians are considered good bio-indicators of aquatic pollution, because they are one of the most susceptible groups to pollution. Several studies suggest that both pollution and climate change produce synergistic effects in amphibians which amplify the toxicity afecting survival, and malformations with an increase in temperature. We studied the sensitivity of sublethal concentrations of dimethoate in Rhinella arenarum tadpoles on two fitness related thermal traits including locomotor swimming performance and thermal tolerance limits (CTmax = critical thermal maximum and CTmin = critical thermal minimum). The locomotor performance of R. arenarum tadpoles decreased with increasing sublethal dimethoate concentrations up to ∼60 % at intermediates dimethoate concentration. The tadpoles showed a tendency to decrease their tolerance to high temperatures (CTmax) with increasing dimethoate concentration around ∼0.5 °C, however no significant differences were found among treatments. Similarly, tadpoles showed decreases in their cold resistance (CTmin) with dimethoate concentrations, around 1 °C the high concentrations of dimethoate. The increase of atypical climatic events, such as heat waves may put R. arenarum tadpoles at greater risk when exposed to dimethoate. Our results show that the sublethal concentrations of the dimethoate pesticide may affect the fitness and survival of the larvae of R. arenarum in natural, and seminatural enviroments.

Rational design, synthesis, and antimicrobial evaluation of novel 1,2,4-trizaole-substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives with a dual thioether moiety

In this paper, a series of novel 1,2,4-trizaole-substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives with a dual thioether moiety were constructed. The synthetic compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and single crystal diffraction. The antimicrobial activities of title compounds against fungi (Pyricutaria oryzae Cav., Phomopsis sp., Botryosphaeria dothidea, cucumber Botrytis cinerea, tobacco Botrytis cinerea, blueberry Botrytis cinerea) and bacteria (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, Xoc; Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, Xac) revealed these compounds possessed excellent antibacterial activity through mycelial growth rate method and turbidity method, respectively. Among them, compounds 7a, 7d, 7g, 7k, 7l, and 7n had the antibacterial inhibition rate of 90.68, 97.86, 93.61, 97.70, 97.26, and 92.34%, respectively. The EC50 values of 7a, 7d, 7g, 7k, 7l, and 7n were 58.31, 48.76, 58.50, 40.11, 38.15, and 46.99 μg/mL, separately, superior to that of positive control pesticide thiodiazole copper (104.26 μg/mL). The molecular docking simulation of compound 7l and glutathione s-transferase also confirmed its good activity. The in vivo bioassay toward Xac infected citrus leaves was also performed to evaluate the potential of compounds as efficient antibacterial reagent. Further study of antibacterial mechanism was also carried out, including extracellular polysaccharide production, permeability of bacterial membrane, and scanning electron microscope observations. The excellent antibacterial activities of these compounds provided a strong support for its application for preventing and control plant diseases.

Deciphering the distinct biocontrol activities of lipopeptides fengycin and surfactin through their differential impact on lipid membranes

Lipopeptides produced by beneficial bacilli present promising alternatives to chemical pesticides for plant biocontrol purposes. Our research explores the distinct plant biocontrol activities of lipopeptides surfactin (SRF) and fengycin (FGC) by examining their interactions with lipid membranes. Our study shows that FGC exhibits a direct antagonistic activity against Botrytis cinerea and no marked immune-eliciting activity in Arabidopsis thaliana while SRF only demonstrates an ability to stimulate plant immunity. It also reveals that SRF and FGC exhibit diverse effects on membrane integrity and lipid packing. SRF primarily influences membrane physical state without significant membrane permeabilization, while FGC permeabilizes membranes without significantly affecting lipid packing. From our results, we can suggest that the direct antagonistic activity of lipopeptides is linked to their capacity to permeabilize lipid membrane while the stimulation of plant immunity is more likely the result of their ability to alter the mechanical properties of the membrane. Our work also explores how membrane lipid composition modulates the activities of SRF and FGC. Sterols negatively impact both lipopeptides' activities while sphingolipids mitigate the effects on membrane lipid packing but enhance membrane leakage. In conclusion, our findings emphasize the importance of considering both membrane lipid packing and leakage mechanisms in predicting the biological effects of lipopeptides. It also sheds light on the intricate interplay between the membrane composition and the effectiveness of the lipopeptides, providing insights for targeted biocontrol agent design.

Role of nutraceutical against exposure to pesticide residues: power of bioactive compounds

Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, aiding in the protection of crops from pests and diseases. However, their indiscriminate use has raised concerns about their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment. Pesticide residues in food and water supplies are a serious health hazards to the general public since long-term exposure can cause cancer, endocrine disruption, and neurotoxicity, among other health problems. In response to these concerns, researchers and health professionals have been exploring alternative approaches to mitigate the toxic effects of pesticide residues. Bioactive substances called nutraceuticals that come from whole foods including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices have drawn interest because of their ability to mitigate the negative effects of pesticide residues. These substances, which include minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols, have a variety of biological actions that may assist in the body's detoxification and healing of harm from pesticide exposure. In this context, this review aims to explore the potential of nutraceutical interventions as a promising strategy to mitigate the toxic effects of pesticide residues.

Algae-derived biochar nanozyme array for discrimination and detection of multiple pesticides in soil, water and food

Despite the potential of nanozymes combined with sensor arrays for discriminating multiple pesticides simultaneously, they have few practical pesticide sensing uses due to the limited performance of existing nanozymes and the complexity of their preparation. Here, agricultural waste is utilized for the facile synthesis of high-performance biochar nanozymes and the fabrication of biochar nanozyme sensor arrays. The production of autogenous N-doped biochars with abundant surface functional groups and good peroxidase-like activities is achieved with different types of algae. High-performance biochar nanozyme sensor arrays can discriminate pesticides in a concentration range from 1 to 500 μM and in real samples from soil, lake water, seawater, apples, cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes and cabbages. Furthermore, pesticides can be quantified down to 1 μM. The development of high-performance nanozyme sensor arrays based on waste conversion could be a step toward pesticide discrimination and detection, which would improve human and environmental safety.

Current trends and mismatches on fungicide use and assessment of the ecological effects in freshwater ecosystems

Despite increasing evidence of off-site ecological impacts of pesticides and policy efforts worldwide, pesticide use is still far from being ecologically sustainable. Fungicides are among the most sold classes of pesticides and are crucial to ensure global food supply and security. This study aimed to identify potential gaps of knowledge and mismatches between research and usage data of fungicides by: (i) systematizing the current trends in global sales of fungicides, focusing on the European context in particular (where they are proportionally important); (ii) reviewing the scientific literature on the impacts of synthetic fungicides on non-target freshwater organisms. Sales data revealed important global and regional asymmetries in the relative importance of fungicides and the preferred active ingredients. The literature review on the ecological effects of fungicides disclosed a mismatch between the most studied and the most sold substances, as well as a bias towards the use of single species assays with standard test organisms. To ensure a proper evaluation, risk scenarios should focus on a regional scale, and research agendas must highlight sensitive aquatic ecorreceptors and improve the crosstalk between analytical and sales data.

The Comet Assay as a Tool in Human Biomonitoring Studies of Environmental and Occupational Exposure to Chemicals-A Systematic Scoping Review

Biomonitoring of human populations exposed to chemical substances that can act as potential mutagens or carcinogens, may enable the detection of damage and early disease prevention. In recent years, the comet assay has become an important tool for assessing DNA damage, both in environmental and occupational exposure contexts. To evidence the role of the comet assay in human biomonitoring, we have analysed original research studies of environmental or occupational exposure that used the comet assay in their assessments, following the PRISMA-ScR method (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews). Groups of chemicals were designated according to a broad classification, and the results obtained from over 300 original studies (n = 123 on air pollutants, n = 14 on anaesthetics, n = 18 on antineoplastic drugs, n = 57 on heavy metals, n = 59 on pesticides, and n = 49 on solvents) showed overall higher values of DNA strand breaks in the exposed subjects in comparison with the unexposed. In summary, our systematic scoping review strengthens the relevance of the use of the comet assay in assessing DNA damage in human biomonitoring studies.

O-nitrobenzyl Caged Molecule Enables Photo-controlled Release of Thiabendazole

Pesticides are essential in agricultural development. Controlled-release pesticides have attracted great attentions. Base on a principle of spatiotemporal selectivity, we extended the photoremovable protective group (PRPG) into agrochemical agents to achieve controllable release of active ingredients. Herein, we obtained NP-TBZ by covalently linking o-nitrobenzyl (NP) with thiabendazole (TBZ). Compound NP-TBZ can be controlled to release TBZ in dependent to light. The irradiated and unirradiated NP-TBZ showed significant differences on fungicidal activities both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the irradiated NP-TBZ displayed similar antifungal activities to the directly-used TBZ, indicating a factual applicability in controllable release of TBZ. Furthermore, we explored the action mode and microcosmic variations by SEM analysis, and demonstrated that the irradiated NP-TBZ retained a same action mode with TBZ against mycelia growth.

Emerging environmental contaminants: Sources, effects on biodiversity and humans, remediation, and conservation implications

Ecosystems, biodiversity, and the human population all depend on a quality or uncontaminated environment. Quality environment provides people and wildlife access to nutrition, medications, dietary supplements, and other ecosystem services. The conservation of biodiversity-that is, species richness, abundance, heredities, and diversity-as well as the control of climate change are facilitated by such an uncontaminated environment. However, these advantages are jeopardized by newly emerging environmental chemical contaminants (EECCs) brought on by increased industrialization and urbanization. In developing countries, inadequate or poor environmental policies, infrastructure, and national standards concerning the usage, recycling, remediation, control, and management of EECCs hasten their effects. EECCs in these countries negatively affect biodiversity, ecological services and functions, and human health. This review reveals that the most deprived or vulnerable local communities in developing countries are those residing near mining or industrial areas and cultivating their crops and vegetables on contaminated soils, as is wildlife that forages or drinks in EECC-contaminated water bodies. Yet, people in these countries have limited knowledge about EECCs, their threats to human well-being, ecosystem safety, and the environment, as well as remediation technologies. Besides, efforts to efficiently control, combat, regulate, and monitor EECCs are limited. Thus, the review aims to increase public knowledge concerning EECCs in developing countries and present a comprehensive overview of the current status of EECCs. It also explores the sources and advancements in remediation techniques and the threats of EECCs to humans, ecosystems, and biodiversity.

Pesticide residues in fresh Mazafati date fruit, soil, and water, and assessment of potential health risks to consumers

A quantitative method based on quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe technique (QuEChERS) sample extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was evolved for the determination of 47 pesticide residues in fresh Mazafati date fruits from Bam City of Kerman Province, Iran. The recoveries for selected pesticides ranged from 88 to 110% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 20% at concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 mg kg-1. The proposed method had a linear range from the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 1.00 mg kg-1, and the LOQ of the 47 pesticides was ≤ 0.005 mg kg-1. The coefficients of determination (R2) were more than 0.99. This technique was used on 12 fresh date fruits samples, three water samples, and three soil samples with three replications per sample. Forty-seven pesticide were detected collectively, but only diazinon was detected in the date fruit samples. The mean value of diazinon residues was 0.037 mg kg-1, and the concentration of diazinon in most samples was below the national maximum residue limit (MRL) for date fruit (0.05 mg kg-1). Among the pesticides measured, diazinon residues were also detected in the water samples, but not in the soil samples. The dietary intake assessment showed no health risk to humans from the consumption of fresh date fruit concerning the pesticides investigated.

Mixture of pesticides based on dimethylamine and imidacloprid affects locomotion of adult zebrafish

Numerous chemical compounds are found in aquatic environments; among them are pesticides. Pesticides are widely used worldwide, and this use has progressively increased in recent decades, resulting in the accumulation of potentially toxic compounds in surface waters. Dimethylamine-based herbicides (DBH) and imidacloprid-based insecticides (IBI) have low soil absorption and high water solubility, facilitating the arrival of these compounds in aquatic environments. In this study, our objective was to analyze whether two pesticides, DBH and IBI at environmentally relevant concentrations of 320 μg/L for each compound, and their mixtures impact the behavioral and endocrine parameters of adult zebrafish, verifying the effect of pesticides on exploratory behavior and social and analyzing hormonal parameters related to stress. Acute exposure to the mixture of pesticides reduced fish locomotion. Pesticides alone and in combination did not affect cortisol levels in exposed animals. Pesticides, when tested together, can cause different effects on non-target organisms, and the evaluation of mixtures of these compounds is extremely important.

Enhancing environmental sustainability in transferred farmlands through rural e-commerce: insights from China

The issue of farmers neglecting environmental concerns in transferred farmlands poses a serious challenge, contradicting the long-term ecological goals of establishing resource-efficient and environment-friendly agriculture. Amidst the pivotal trend of moderately scaled agricultural operations, rural e-commerce holds promise as a catalyst and driving force for enhancing long-term environmental governance of transferred lands. The effectiveness and mechanisms of this potential, however, remain to be empirically examined. This study gathers panel data on environmental positive and negative externalities from six provinces in China, spanning the period from 2013 to 2022, encompassing 6372 farmers. A quasi-natural experiment of farmers' e-commerce participation is designed using difference-in-differences methodology (DID), propensity score matching (PSM), and moderating models. The primary findings are as follows: E-commerce participation increases farmers' positive environmental inputs on transferred lands, such as water-saving irrigation, adoption of social services, and preservation of traditional varieties. Simultaneously, it decreases negative environmental inputs, such as the consumption of fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural films. The environmental sustainability effects of e-commerce vary across the eastern, central, and western regions of China. E-commerce has a more pronounced impact on agricultural social services and chemical pollutants in the eastern and central regions, while its influence is more significant on water-saving irrigation and variety preservation in the western region. Land transfer forms and supply order contracts do not directly promote farmers' environmentally friendly cultivation practices. Instead, they catalyze the environmental effects of e-commerce through a significant positive interaction term. These conclusions hold after matching for e-commerce participation propensity, while passing sensitivity tests, parallel trend tests, and placebo tests. Consequently, rural e-commerce, without compromising farmers' income, enhances the proactiveness of farmers in environmental conservation, transforms agricultural management practices, and effectively reduces rural non-point source pollution. Policy recommendations include reducing institutional barriers to rural e-commerce participation at the national level, encouraging the establishment of region-specific agricultural environmental sustainability goals, and leveraging the rural e-commerce industry chain to establish a nationwide environmental credit database and incentive mechanism.

Strategies for mitigation of pesticides from the environment through alternative approaches: A review of recent developments and future prospects

Chemical-based peticides are having negative impacts on both the healths of human beings and plants as well. The World Health Organisation (WHO), reported that each year, >25 million individuals in poor nations are having acute pesticide poisoning cases along with 20,000 fatal injuries at global level. Normally, only ∼0.1% of the pesticide reaches to the intended targets, and rest amount is expected to come into the food chain/environment for a longer period of time. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the amounts of pesticides present in the soil. Physical or chemical treatments are either expensive or incapable to do so. Hence, pesticide detoxification can be achieved through bioremediation/biotechnologies, including nano-based methodologies, integrated approaches etc. These are relatively affordable, efficient and environmentally sound methods. Therefore, alternate strategies like as advanced biotechnological tools like as CRISPR Cas system, RNAi and genetic engineering for development of insects and pest resistant plants which are directly involved in the development of disease- and pest-resistant plants and indirectly reduce the use of pesticides. Omics tools and multi omics approaches like metagenomics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics for the efficient functional gene mining and their validation for bioremediation of pesticides also discussed from the literatures. Overall, the review focuses on the most recent advancements in bioremediation methods to lessen the effects of pesticides along with the role of microorganisms in pesticides elimination. Further, pesticide detection is also a big challenge which can be done by using HPLC, GC, SERS, and LSPR ELISA etc. which have also been described in this review.
